Addiction stacks for opioids, stimulants and GABA'ergics

2023.04.02 13:54 Tsetler Addiction stacks for opioids, stimulants and GABA'ergics

The Woodroof Protocol
A method of reducing withdrawal,
support tapering and prevent relapse
I dedicate this work to everyone struggling with addiction as well as those, helping the
increasing number of people, out there suffering. From the parent worried sick about their
child, to the healthworkers and professionals each Day fighting to save the lives of those, still
stuck in addiction.
My dear American friend whom I had the pleasure of getting to know and helping to taper
from a severe opiod-addiction, inspired me to write this to share with you.
This information will be of great value, if you’re trying to recover, or currently helping
someone, recover from addiction to: stimulants, opioids and GABAergics.
Here below is a short guide, that summarizes the findings made from Years of experience
working within this field making personalized regimens of supplements with very promising
results.
The individual regimens are all legal, non-toxic, non-addictive, natural and most importantly
based on evidence. They can all be bought or ordered online, at a reasonable cost and self
administered or used alongside other treatments etc.
Introduction:
I wanted to show my appreciation for Woodroofs work and courage making treatments
available back then, fighting for the rights of people, who weren’t offered the best
treatment they knew at the time.
Woodroof is a referal to Ronald Dickson Woodroof (1992) who founded the famous Dallas
Buyers Club which later was made into the movie by the same name. R.D.Woodroof through
the buyers club, distributed medicine to treat Aids during the hardship in the 80’s. Today we
see addiction is killing more people each Year than Aids did when it was most rampant in the
US. Not only OD’s but addiction-related suicide as well as alcoholism is widely spreading,
creating torn apart families and isolated individuals, all who are in dire need of our help.
This story ressonated with me, as I started a non-profit myself about 3 Years ago, where we
collectively bought large amounts of supplements to save money and to get around the
legislation in my country. I would then make personalized blends of these for a lot of cases,
but especially for people struggling with addiction and cases where our psychiatry had failed.
I quickly started getting people referred to me struggling with stimulants, opioids and
GABAergics but were also able to help in a lot cases with somatic diseases and I had to keep
learning and read up on the studies as well as scout the internet for knowledgeable sources.
I was educated as an intercultural and international socialworker, later having studied
anthropology and globalization, although I have no background in medicine, this must be
mentioned.
I suffered a minor TBI (traumatic brain injury) 10 Years ago, and I had to learn, how to
recover from the cognitive issues and did a lot of experimentation and researched neuro
regeneration and supplements for Years which meant I was familiar scouting for resources, reading studies as well as looking for interactions.
I needed to dive deep into the individual effects of minerals, vitamins, amino acids,
adaptogens and nootropics and the different synergies, and found some very interesting
finds regarding possible addiction treatments and support, and I have witnessed some very
promising results.
These following regimens and advice is what I’ve seen having the highest rate of recovery as
well as the lowest rapported issues with relapse, accute withdrawal as well as PAWS (post
accute-withdrawal-symptoms) while and after tapering. Studies are linked beneath each, for
further reading.
If you’re on any other medication or supplements, then either get a medical professional
to look into interactions before trying any of these or if you proceed on your own hand,
make sure either ask on i.e. Reddit / FB groups, or Google substance-x + substance-y +
interactions and do a bit of reading.
I. Opiods
Warning, this blend of supplements potentiates opiates to a high degree, meaning if you’re
on an active taper, then dose lower than you’re used to before trying these, approximately
half your usual dose. It also means you can do a far more rapid taper and use these before,
as well as after, your last dose during the taper, to reduce RLS and PAWS here. When you
hit a wall and your body starts reacting with WD’s, then hover at that dose for a few Days
and then continue cutting down a little less aggressive from there on.
  1. Bacopa Monnieri Extract_______________________300mg-3000mg pr. Day in 1-4 doses
  2. Black Seed Oil (Nigella Sativa) ___________________1 tbsp.-3 tbsp. pr. Day in 1-4 doses
  3. Agmatine ___________________________________500mg-1500mg pr. Day in 1-4 doses
  4. Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbate)_____________50mg-100mg pr.kg divided in several doses*
*Before starting the vitamin C, I recommend to read up on this link:
https://ericazelfand.com/vitamin-c-for-opioid-addiction/
If you suffer from hemochromatosis, skip the vitamin c though.
*In some cases where you’re coming off a dangerously high dose of fentanyl or methadone,
then substituting with kratom alongside this regiment can be useful in certain cases, but it
must be said kratom in of itself is an opioid with risk of addiction. It’s the lessor of two evils
though and for some can have benefits, if they can’t get suboxone etc. It will work fine,
alongside this taper as these supplements also potentiates the kratom and suboxone a lot. If
you’re trying to get off kratom the same supplements will help you too.
Bacopa (BM) can require a step by step increase to avoid stomach issues, so start with a low
dose. Some people get slight diarrhea dosing high on BM, so always dose right after a fatty
meal, or just use Psyllium husks and some butteoil before taking the BM, although a large
meal containing fats, is the most effective way mitigating this. Also certain bad extracts
tends to make the diarrhea inevitable even in low doses and with food so if you’re unlucky
to get your hands on a bad extract, try giving another a go before you give up on BM as it is
truly effective when it can get absorbed. Both the vitamin c and the BM needs to get adjusted for by slowly increasing until you reach
bowel tolerance. A meal before, with the fiber and fats seems to shorten this period.
BM in higher doses causes a slight fatigue and some prefer to take 200-500mg of rhodiola
extract early in the Day to counter this because if the rhodiola is taken late, it will hinder
sleep.
Bacopa has a long history of use for opium-addiction in India but have recently been studied
and hailed for it’s effect of diminishing discomfort and reducing WD’s as well as the dose
needed for painrelief etc. Agmatine and BSO also show great potential for reducing WD’s
and managing PAWS as shown in the studies.
I will refer to a few studies here but for more detailed information, I recommend reading or
skimming the PHD dissertation about the potential of bacopa in opioid dependency as well.
For further reading on each supplement Google each + opioid + studies or opiates, and read
about some of the studies or old threads about these.

C

I recommend to continue this regimen for a while after seizing the last mg’s of opiates as
this prevents relapse by a great deal as well as helps to bring the body back into homeostasis
as bacopa increases synaptogenesis as well. You can skip the high dose vitamin C when
you’re out of the woods and just get a good multivitamin and some omega 3’s to maintain
the effects. The rhodiola also acts as a powerful anti-fatigue and anti-depressant for post
addiction lethargy. Most get great relief from doing this regiment for longer periods as they
report it helps keep them clearminded and manages their cravings for opiates, is what I’ve
experienced from feedback. The doses can easily be lowered to more sustainable levels that will still offer relief from
cravings. On the last page I have some recommendations for other natural compounds with
neuro-regenerative proporties that also reduces cravings for alcohol and drugs that can be
worth looking into to add to, as well as substitute for some of these when you get clean and
free from WD’s again.
II. Stimulants
Warning, do not use mucuna alongside an active taper still using stimulants. You should be
able to stop or do a rapid taper with the others and continue with the mucuna but do so
only, when you’re off the stimulant. In most cases it is easier just to stop and substitute with
this regimen as it will reduce cravings, mental instability as well as physical WD’s very
effectively. Also be aware that polygala potentiates stimulants so dose lower than usual
around 2/3 normal dose and monitor your reactions if you are going to taper off without
mucuna. If any sign of discomfort arises, wait to use polygala also until you’ve tapered down
using the others.
  1. L-tyrosine____________________________________________500mg-2500mg 1-3 doses
  2. Bilberry/Blueberry Extract_______________________________300mg-1500mg 1-3 doses
  3. Polygala Extract_______________________________________ 50mg-200mg 1-3- doses
  4. Mucuna Extract________________________________________50mg-250mg 1-3 doses
Mucuna extract contains l-dopa which is a direct precursor to dopamine and l-tyrosine is a
precursor to l-dopa, which helps prevent neurotoxicity to some degree. Bilberry/blueberry
extract also has neuroprotective proporties on the dopaminergic system as shown from the
studies below. It’s best to get bilberry as it contains 4-10x higher the amount of
anthocyanins but a higher dose of blueberry extract will also work. It is though not
recommended to use mucuna for lengthy periods due to risk of neurotoxicity so later, you’ll
be able to, instead drop the mucuna, and add NAC + d-phenylalanine which is a precursor to
the l-tyrosine, alongside the others. This is once you’ve been clean for at least a Week and
managed the most severe craving and WD’s.
In case you’re showing troubling signs of brainaging due to stimulant-use, you can add
bacopa to this stack as well, as evidence is showing it is acting as a powerful neuroprotectant
in meth+mpp induced neurotoxicity and it’s effect of synaptogenesis will aid here, as well.
Pair it with rhodiola 200-500mg if you experience fatigue or depression from the PAWS that
won’t dissapate with the supplements.

I also recommend you continue this regiment for as long as you experience cravings or fear
you might relapse. Just switch the mucuna after the critical phase and instead use NAC + d
phenylalanine and perhaps bacopa if there’s some damages from a long period of addiction.
You will easily be able to find a lower or even a higher, functioning dose of the supplements
that suits your need for repair and relief. The most important part is you move further and
further away from relapse and get the natural energy and drive to get back into a healthy
lifestyle again. In general people I learn who’ve forgotten or stopped their supplements,
after they get clean, tends to relapse, way more often, than those who keep their regimens.
So use this for as long as needed and read the part about alcohol and managing cravings
down at the bottom. If you feel some resistance to using supplements or want to learn more
about other kinds of medicine like these, I advice you to download the free guide, linked to
at the last page.
III. GABA
’ergics
Warning, don’t completely seize your use of benzodiazepines abrubtly. Plan a careful taper
as risk of seizures can be highly dangerous, especially in the higher dose-range. This regimen
will potentiate benzodiazepines also, as well so be aware to dose lower in the beginning
until you get a sense of how much potentiation, for the benzo, you’re currently on.
Approximately to 1/2 and then if WD’s kick in dose a bit higher until you feel okay and if you
get high vice versa. If you’re using a benzo that is metabolized fast like alprazolam it can be
worth to slowly adjust and start using a benzo with a longer half life like clonazapam and
diazapam to better be able to cut doses and not worry about getting into WD’s at every hour. Emoxypine________________________________________100mg-500mg 1-3 doses pr.Day
Agmatine_________________________________________500mg-1500mg 1-3 doses pr.Day
Magnolia Bark Extract_______________________________200mg-800mg 1-3 doses pr. Day
Black Seed Oil (Nigella Sativa)______________________1 tbsp.-3 tbsp. 1-3 doses pr. Day
*This also works for gabapentenoids like (Gabapentin, Pregabalin and Phenibut) but if
you’re tapering down from a high dose phenibut, you might also benefit by substituting 1g
of phenibut with 10mg baclofen in that ratio. This regimen will make you able to taper fast
and effective down from the baclofen too.
Glutamate surges from excitotoxicity when tapering, often creates severe adrenal fatigue,
mental instablity and wearyness, after a while and here it is also important to make sure to
get a enough vitamin b6 and you’ll also be able try kava, NAC and l-theanine, alongside this,
to prevent these symptoms. Magnolia modulates GABA-a but there’s not many studies on
emoxypine even though safety has been well-established. Regarding emoxypine, you can
find a wide arrange of user reports that backs it’s efficiency in tapering which were
confirmed from my own observations.
All of these together, can bring a bit symptoms of fatigue due to the combined effects of the
supplements. If this becomes an issue take 200-500mg of rhodiola extract early in the Day to
counter this because if the rhodiola is taken late, it will hinder sleep. Lemon balm and
magnesium glycinate can be a help in getting some sleep, in certain phases in the WD’s if
you taper aggressively.
Use this like the other regimens for as long as you need the support and when you’re
completely off all benzodiazepines and stabilized, then you can switch the magnolia extract
to sabroxy extract, and this will help your brain heal faster due to increased BDNF,
neurogenesis as well as synaptogenesis. Bacopa too has effects of synaptogenesis and will
help mitigating symptoms of alcohol WD and craving and can be useful to add, once you’re
off as well.
Benzo induced neurological dysfynction (BIND) can require more of the neuro-regenerative
effects in general and higher doses. I suggest you download the free guide, linked to at the
last page, and look into, sabroxy, polygala, bacopa, sulforaphane, emoxypine and the
neuropeptides as a start.

III. I.Alcohol
Dealing with alcoholism often get’s tricky as this is tied deeply into culture as well as
patterns of engaging in much needed socializing.
This regimen of supplements might be able to reduce most of the cravings and help with
many of the issues from a physiological point of view. While on the other hand, the isolation
and mental toll it takes to step outside of the festivities, often tend to push people back into
drinking or worse even, into drugs.
Kava shows some very promising results being a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-a
receptor which means it doesn’t have much addiction potential at all, yet mimicks a lot of
the effects from alcohol. In a lot places now, people are beginning to bring kava for
themselves for going to parties, to manage social anxiety and peer-preassure as well as
experiencing the enjoyment of being a part of the letting loose.
Kava has shown to act as a powerful anti-cravings agent as shown in the study below, not
only for alcohol but most drug of choices tested on the group.
My anecdotal observations:
Most people who’ve gotten clean, functional and even stopped drinking due to it leading
them to do drugs, often told me about them getting a nagging evening restlessness. In
general how it would get their head spinning about relapsing just once etc.
Those who tried kava all reported that it took away that sense of craving and it helped them
relax and unwind when they got stressed enough to begin fantasizing about drugs and
alcohol. Some of those who didn’t want the kava, managed to stay clean, while others
unfortunately found themselves, slip a few times.
But they often reported, that having the supplements and knowing the way back, kept them
getting back to living clean very quickly after.
A theory of this is, could be due to the role alcohol and cannabis has played for thousands of
Years perhaps, being incoded in our biology, to come to a point where the need, for just
some kind of recreational effects for some, becomes highly unbearable to cope with.
This is why I often advice people in risk, to get to learn about kava and have at least a little
bag of instant/micronized kava lying around, so they know they’ll be able to push the panic
button on the accute cravings.
The point of kava being highly adviced as the lessor of two evils is displayed in these
infographics here: (https://sci-hub.st/10.1177/0269881119841569) Kava and safety:
Kava got a bad stain from back in the 90’s when some medicinal companies bought up a
kava-company and shortly after started making acetone extracts of leaves and stems which
wasn’t allowed. A few cases with people with pre-existing liver issues and even alcoholism
and medication on the side, in a rare instants experienced hepatoxicity and the pharmaceutical industry, in a collective effort, blew it out proportions. The most likely cause
of this, is hypothesized to be, the rapid increase, in loss of sales of benzodiazepines and
addictive sleeping medication, which they began seeing as kava increased in popularity back
in the late 90’s. Multiple peer-reviewed studies have since put these claims to rest, and
these are linked to beneath. As a comparison acetylsalicylic acid, also known as aspirin, was
actually found, to be more dangerous than kava.

Finishing words:
Reintegrating your lifepath back into your original flowstate again, can be difficult, as all
addiction tends to originate from trauma of some sort, but also create a lot of trauma in of
itself. Most of us, are also carriers of multiple generations of traumatic experiences and all of this, if not treated, will hinder our journey into the higher levels of emotional and spiritual
growth. These regimens can provide us with a long window of opportunity to begin to find
your way back into progressing with a healthy lifestyle. But if the addiction-issue, is taken
lightly, and given enough time, the signs of trauma’s will come clawing their way back and
have you risk relapse.
I see a lot, find great comfort in religious community with a strong faith as well as evolving
values of reciprocity to newcomers. Some start to exercise a lot and eat healthy again, as
well as reach out to new friendgroups. Some show great benefits from getting therapy or
counseling for that extra assistance in unraveling, certain kinds of severe trauma. Others go
into Eastern and spiritual practices like Qigong and Yoga and start to meditate. A
combination of all of these would be ideal, but focus on one step at a time. There are many
paths back to healing and a good marker for progression here, is if your eyes are getting
kinder, your voice is becoming softer and you begin to feel and see the traumas, of others,
and wants to be in service of some sort.
A short story we can use to remind ourselves.
A long time ago, a therapist explained to me.
"Once a woman told me that she would always love being intimate with her husband
because then after that his eyes would be mild and kind.
A man then told me how he loved making his wife laugh, because after that, her voice
would become soft and playful.
Lastly a young child told me, how the child loved being around and being in service to the
parents, because after that, they would listen and stay present, just as ready to cry with
them as to laugh with the them.
Counter-intuitive strategies
For those who at some point will seek out, some kind of therapy this here beneath, might be
worth knowing.
PTSD therapy offers relief for around 20% of people with PTSD, while MDMA-facilitated
therapy shows results of around 80% instead. If you suffer from PTSD or severe trauma, and
you can’t get this therapy where you’re at, using kanna extract (preferably MT55) and
getting a good therapist to work with, will help you up the percentages. This is because
kanna works very similarly to MDMA. Just let the therapist know politely, that you’re
supplementing with a herbal extract while you’re there, to treat your anxiety, and most will
have no issues with this.
The promising aspect of this, is that now, you can have Weekly sessions instead of having to
wait 2-3 Months in between each, as with MDMA due to sideeffects and toxicity. Although
be careful that the euforic effects of kanna doesn’t act as a trigger so be mindful about this
before proceeding.

2023.04.02 13:04 JosephSaber945 NFS Carbon ultimate guide

Important Note

I was using Cheat Engine to get unlimited cash and the best rides, if you don't want to use it consider using Samson, Nikki and Yumi to get the highest amount of money possible
First of all after the chase with Cross you'll presented to choose one of these classes cars ( Exotic, Muscle, Tuner )
Choose Muscle to unlock Dodge Challenger T you'll need this ride to overtake the other bosses in the first 10 seconds of the Canyon duel
Before that unlock Nissan 240 SX by completing its challenge races requirement because this is the best tier 1 ride
That'll require NFS Carbon the collector edition
Then go and conquer Kempton
Try to purshace Nissan 240 SX and sell your starter muscle car you'll need an overpowered tuner ride to beat Angie and Nissan 240 SX is the best out there
With a bit of skills you should have no problem overtaking Angie with Nissan in the first round of the Canyon duel
After you beat Angie go for downtown and conquer Kenji's territories
After you unlock the boss race with Kenji don't race him conquer other races and territories in Fortune to unlock more tier 2 performance parts you'll find these territories in the far West of Kempton
Then get your hands on Dodge Challenger T then fully upgrade it
The pro suspension performance part is unlocked after you beat Kenji instead there should be a race in Fortune to unlock the street suspension performance part
Small Tip tune the performance parts of engine and transmission to the far left to increase its acceleration that'll help in Canyon duel
With semi fully upgraded Dodge Challenger T you should have no problem overtaking Kenji in the first 10 seconds of the race but be careful the first corner of the Canyon duel is tight and it'll require a bit of skills to beat Kenji but from few tries you should overtake him in the First 10 seconds of the race
After you beat Kenji upgrade your Dodge Challenger suspension part to pro then conquer the two race wars in Downtown and Kempton
This is the ideal time to unlock Iron wall reward card first start a race in an enemy controller territory then exit it to free roam doing this few times will trigger a defensive race do this till you win 20 defensive races till you unlock Iron Wall, keep in mind that you need to use Dodge Challenger T because muscle cars are the best when it comes to speedtracers races
Then go and conquer Fortuna till you face Wolf, he's the easiest boss you should overtake him in the first 10 seconds of the race also there are no tight corners whatsoever
At this point you'll unlock Silverton this is where the game steps its difficulty to Hard why
Because now other crews are using tier 3 cars so how to solve this problem ?
First of all you need to use either DB9, Dodge Challenger T or Mercedes SL65 fully upgraded
Don't use Kenji's ride it's a tuner without good acceleration and performance you won't stand a chance against other tier 3 rides
Lastly you'll need to use Nikki's drafting ability to gain more speed and to catch up with other racers
Don't bother conquering the race war race in Fortuna you'll need a fully upgraded tier 3 top muscle car Corvette in order to that
Go and conquer Silverton focus your attacks on the East and northern East of Silverton to unlock tier 3 racing performance parts
Then after you have completely unlocked all racing performance parts go and unlock Corvette you'll need to conquer the territory in the far south
This is where things get complicated the territory consist of three races A Wolf Canyon Race and a speed trap and another race, without tier 3 muscle ride it's gonna be hard to beat the speedtrap race and without Fully upgraded Corvette it's gonna be difficult to beat Wolf in Canyon I used Cheat engine to purshace a tier 3 muscle car and fully upgrade it to clear the speedtrap race with the help of Nikki, so figure out on your own how to solve this problem
After you unlock Corvette fully upgrade it with race performance parts
Then challenge all 3 bosses in Canyon duel
Angie shouldn't be a big problem nor Kenji Wolf may be a minor problem due to some tight corners but it's completely possible to overtake Wolf in the first 10 seconds of the race after a few tries
Go and conquer Silverton with Corvette you'll no longer need Nikki's help
You may also want to conquer the race wars in Fortuna right now
Then lastly you'll unlock Darius the toughest Boss in NFSC and MW
For starters clear the Canyon duel Gold challenge to get some practice where you use fully upgraded Cross Corvette against BMW M3 GTR on the Eternity pass track the same on which you'll duel Darius
If you can't defeat BMW you won't be able to defeat Darius' Audi Le mans Quattro
Audi is better than BMW it has better handling and better acceleration and top speed and it also oversteers and drift in races in summary Audi Quattro is the best ride in the game
Don't bother trying to overtake Darius in the first round he's too taugh and you may need two rounds to clear Darius
(Wasn't tested) try to increase the acceleration of Corvette by tunning the transmission and Engine performance parts
I beat Darius by using cheat engine to get unlimited score he was one hell of a boss search for the score value in the first round not the second also search for a float type value.

2023.04.02 12:47 Vegetable_Wear8016 A short love story - Fiction

Hi Ladies, this is a short story by me which will help bring some joy to your day.
Mangalore Buns
It was a beautiful day in September, the sun was gentle, the trees were in between the hues of orange and brown and the afternoons were perfect for a nap. Dharma, however, was in the middle of chaos.
He was waiting for the parents of his students to start arriving. It was the dreaded parent-teacher meeting before the biggest festivities of the year began.
Dharma worked in a prominent convent school in Bangalore in South India. He was 26 and taught Chemistry to high school students from grades 8-10. This was his first job and he had been here for a little over a year and was glad that he didn’t have to work for a lesser-known school. He enjoyed the benefits he received like free transportation and low-cost meals at the canteen.
He was a lanky, tall man with dusky skin and delicate almond eyes. He wore grey almost every day to work and liked to keep to himself most of the time. His age almost always worked against him in his work as the senior teachers disregarded his ideas and the head of the department of Chemistry asked him to temper his work constantly.
However, Dharma liked his students. They were his source of entertainment and pride. The boys always had interesting PlayStation games to talk about and the girls loved discussing the latest Netflix shows with him. When any of them exhibited even a remote interest in Chemistry he felt his job had a purpose.
The parents waited in line as Dharma addressed each of them patiently. There were the usual parents he had always encountered. The type who was perpetually unhappy despite their child being in the top 10% of the class, the type who wanted their child to make friends with the top 10% and not hang out with average Joes, the type who was embarrassed by their child’s academic performance and did not want to be at the meeting and lastly, the ones whose solution to everything was tuition classes for all the subjects that matter.
Three hours and several cups of coffee later, he offered a tissue to the last student who was pretending to cry as her mother bombarded her with questions. “She will pass all the subjects in the finals sir, I guarantee it. This girl is too focused on enjoying life” the mother told Dharma as she was leaving. “Don’t worry madam, Anju is going to do well” he responded mentally noting Anju’s mother’s definition of enjoying life was her daughter’s gift for music and the arts.
And then there was one. Yogi was the only student left in class waiting for his mother patiently. She came rushing into the door just as Dharma thought she wouldn’t show.
Ambika Bhat wore a lavender shirt that was dotted with yellow sunflowers with small gold hoop earrings. She was a chubby woman with curly hair and a very expressive face. She had a vibrant personality and a voice that demanded attention.
She apologised profusely for being late. Dharma couldn’t help but notice how lavender was such a beautiful colour on her, he hated lavender in general. He only liked greys and blues. “Did she do something different to her hair?” he wondered as she scanned Yogi’s grades.
“I have already gone through his grades and overall performance online, I came for a discussion” she informed him. They discussed Yogi’s weaknesses in depth when Dharma offered to take tuition classes exclusively for Yogi. “That won’t be necessary Dharma, I have almost finalised a private tutor who can cover Math and Science, he has a Master’s degree from a really good university and teaches at an international school” she declined politely. “This has nothing to do with the past, he is a bright student and because we’ve spent so much time together, I know how to guide him” he protested. “I didn’t question your intentions, I just think this is the best option for him,” she said. “Private tutors are expensive,” he said noticing that she was tapping her foot nervously against the table. “I’ll manage, thanks for your help. Let’s review his performance after the mock exam before the finals” she said ending the conversation. She left the classroom as swiftly as she had entered it, her perfume lingered which took Dharma back in time.
It was a hot day in June when he met Ambika for the first time. It was his first month on the job at the school. She wanted to meet Yogi’s math and science teachers. She was surprised to find a young twenty-something Chemistry teacher talking to her passionately about different academic opportunities for her son.
Within a month, Ambika had Dharma conducting private tuition classes for Yogi at her residence. He understood how Yogi learnt and had a reassuring presence. They met at her place twice a week for two hours. Ambika always ensured Dharma received hot chai and biscuits, she would never let a guest leave her house without them trying her ginger chai. She took it personally when Dharma told her that he was a coffee person and didn’t like her tea.
Dharma, being an introvert, did not attempt to start a conversation with Ambika. He preferred to keep it professional and discuss only school-related issues. Ambika, a busy single working mother, had no time to spare to talk to Dharma after class.
‘There’s nowhere you can be, that isn’t where you’re meant to be’ – John Lenon
Bangalore was notorious for its unpredictable weather, it would rain all day at the drop of a hat. Dharma was just about finished with his session with Yogi when the beginning of the rainfall that could drown you began.
There was nothing much he could do except browse through articles on his phone. Ambika was exhausted after a long day of training for the new employees, she was a Human Resources manager at Amazon.
After what seemed like an hour, Ambika realised that the rain would continue for the next few hours and Dharma could not travel on his bike in such heavy rainfall nor would he be able to get a cab. She decided it would be rude if she didn’t offer him dinner.
Sitting across the dining table, sharing a meal of Sambhar and rice, for the first time in 2 months, they had a conversation about themselves. Yogi was in the living room watching Japanese anime. They chatted about their careers, their favourite restaurants in the city and their families. Ambika’s parents were living in Udupi and visited her often, especially after her difficult divorce to lend support and help take care of Yogi. Dharma lived with his mother, he had lost his father a few years ago.
It was easy to talk to Ambika. She was so talkative and cheerful that the conversation flowed easily for Dharma. They both liked Italian food and she disliked the same senior teachers in school that he did. He was almost disappointed when it was time to leave. He felt like he had a long conversation with his best friend from college.
It rained that entire week and Dharma was stuck at Ambika’s house for many hours after class. They enjoyed long conversations over a bowl of noodles, fried rice and khichdi depending on the day. Ambika shared stories of the funny candidates she had interviewed and the twisted corporate politics that Dharma was not privy to.
When the bout of bad weather had ended, Dharma found himself thinking about Ambika. He was attracted to her in a way he knew was wrong. She was a mother in her early 40s, focused on giving her son the best education she could afford. He could find someone in the same phase of life as him he told himself.
It was Yogi’s 14th birthday and Dharma was invited for a private lunch Ambika had organised with Yogi’s close friends and some of her friends. It was in a gaming arena where a bunch of teenagers were too distracted with virtual reality to care about the adults. Ambika looked radiant in a yellow maxi dress with her curly hair tied up in a bun. He could smell her rose-scented perfume standing next to her.
Ambika’s friends were as extroverted as she was. They tried to include him in the conversation, they shared a delicious lunch and he discovered through them that she used to be a theatre artist for many years as a passion until she had Yogi. ‘That explains her expressive face’ he thought.
When he chanced upon an opportunity to find the famous city theatre RangaShankara hosting folk music he felt no harm in asking Ambika if she wanted to watch it. “I haven’t watched a live performance in years, it’s sweet of you to remember I used to be a theatre artist,” she told him smiling at the thought of being near the stage again.
Several months passed, and Yogi was busy with school, friends and his anime oblivious that his mother had been having evening dates at the ‘darshini’ (a local cuisine restaurant) with his favourite teacher. They often met after her work to grab a bite, she always picked Mangalore buns, a sweet fried bread made from flour and ripe bananas served with coconut chutney. A childhood favourite that originated from her birthplace. “Only this place makes it fresh,” she told Dharma each time.
Yogi’s mother who normally stayed away from romance of any kind after his father had broken her heart was now looking at love differently. She looked at love as companionship, a friendship that she could rely on rather than an all-consuming emotion that could blow up in flames if ignited.
“You are interested in a 40-year-old single woman whose son you teach?! Have you lost your mind?” Dharma’s mother asked him looking stunned at the news her son had just given her. “You can find an equal match, you are out of her league, why would you want to shoulder this kind of responsibility at 26?!” she continued getting visibly angrier at his nonchalant attitude. “So, pretending to like a spouse for 30 years of marriage like you did was not a burden but choosing to like someone who just happens to be unconventional is a burden?” he asked her. “Everyone has different burdens they need to carry in their lives, I could not choose mine, it was forced upon me, but you get to choose and this is not an option,” she told him leaving the room to ensure Dharma did not attempt to convince her.
It took many dinners at her house together after Yogi’s class, theatre performances and darshini dates for Ambika to arrive at the realisation that she was unconsciously building a relationship that could not be defined . He was an intelligent, thoughtful, reliable man whose presence comforted her but he was also very young. Her family and friends would disapprove, they lived in a relatively conservative society. She would be risking her son’s future but most importantly she couldn’t afford to have another broken heart in one lifetime.
It was a hot summer’s day in April, the beginning of summer vacation at the school. 9 months after they had first met. The chutney was sour just like Ambika’s mood. Dharma arrived not wearing grey for the first time hoping she would notice. Ambika had been distant to him for a few weeks, he did not expect this to be the usual chat over filter coffee. He knew that both of them were dealing with conflicting emotions.
“It would be best if we stopped meeting, I will find another tutor for Yogi, I have the entire summer break to look for one,” she said looking sadly into his eyes. “Was it something I did or said?” he asked taken aback by her statement. “None, I took our friendship too far, it’s a relationship we do not need,” she told him looking down at her plate. “Are you worried about what Yogi or your family will think?” he asked her. “I don’t think there’s any point in us spending any more time together. We can focus our efforts elsewhere….sorry but this colour doesn’t suit you” she said trying to finish the last bit of sour chutney. “You don’t have to be an HR all the time, you sound like you are firing someone, we were more than colleagues” he responded to her impersonal way of ending their relationship. There was nothing more to say since they both knew the cards were stacked against them.
He processed his grief quietly, informing his mother that it was over. His mother was relieved and performed a puja to thank God for helping her son choose the right path. Dharma steered clear of eating at any darshini and made his conversation with Yogi only about class despite Yogi’s attempts to digress. Dharma never saw Ambika again until the Parent Teacher Meeting in September.
On some days, Ambika almost sent Dharma messages when she wanted to talk about the bad phase at work she was going through. She accidentally did one day and he responded “we can always share updates, we are still friends”. Dharma found weekends particularly hard to deal with. His friends didn’t possess the type of excitement and passion for life Ambika had when they went out.
In the last 3 years of Yogi’s school life, they saw each other at Parent Teacher Meetings. The conversations were brief, Yogi had become a good student in his subject so he had no complaints. The big day had finally arrived, it was the school graduation day.
He was hoping to see Ambika at Yogi’s graduation. She wore a lavender saree and had let her curly hair flow wild and open, it reflected her mood. She looked proud and happy as she posed with Yogi and her parents for photos.
She looked for Dharma, and she spotted him taking pictures with students and other teachers. He looked handsome in his grey blazer, as he bid farewell to his young students. She almost wanted to ask him to meet her at the darshini after graduation, she came very close.
“Hi…I wanted to thank you for your effort in the last 3 years. You are still Yogi’s favourite teacher and his grades in Science have always been high thanks to your guidance” she told him smiling. “I didn’t do much, he gets the zeal from his mother” he responded as their eyes met. “Will I see you after this?” he asked her afraid of the answer. “I hope so” she responded gently touching his shoulder.
It was a few years later and Dharma’s mother was excited. It was the day they were finalising the menu for Dharma’s wedding. Dharma’s fiancee Niharika, her family, Dharma and his mother were incessantly discussing the dishes. After much deliberation they handed over the final order to the caterer, there was only one dish that the chef felt was out of place on a dinner menu, it was Mangalore buns.

2023.04.02 12:40 Firegoat1 TOC 4 - The great eight enter, the final four exit ..... early watch, discussion and spoilers

Welll, it's Sunday morning so lets talk TOC 4 quarter finals! As usual, this is an early drop on Discovery Plus with discussions about the match, the food, the scores but no spoiling the winners. I think we can all agree this will be a crazy episodel All the chefs come in.... and each chef just needs 3 more wins to take home the money. And the randomizer is going to change. The randomizer is going international with more exotic cuisines and equipment. These are going to be some good match ups!
Round one: East A Division. Two seed "Iron Chef" Jose Garces vs. eight seed "The angry Italian" Britt Rescigno the GGG play in winner. Here comes the randomizer. Protein, produce equipment, style and wild card. Frog legs, crab apple, tadka pan, smooth and crunchy and audience choice. As Guy says, "That, without question, sucks." Both chefs agree they don't want frog legs. The audience gives them a respin and they get iberico pork secreto. Forty minutes to cook. Britt is making Iberico Secreto with a crab apple sauce and glazed carrots. Britt's strategy is clean and precise food. Guy is still calling Justin the "wolf man." Simon is wearing an amazing hat he's working with Jose and Jose is cooking a Herb marinated iberico secreto with crab apple tortilla espanola. We jump to Karen, Maneet and Hunter in the Mayfair viewing room. Justin seems very excited about Britt's food. Jose talks about his mom. Aw. Sweet. This food looks really good guys. Here come the judges.
Judging: Here are the three judges: Iron Chef Cat Cora, Chef Lorena Garcia and Chef Rocco DiSpirito. Justin Warner the Wolf man presents Britt's dish first. (the crowd howls.) Lorena loved the secreto. She liked the use of the Randomizer. She said she could use more crunch. Rocco loves the "sexy" carrots. Cat said it is absolutely delicious but her secreto was underdone. She didn't get enough crunch but she loved the flavor. Points are 50 taste, 30 for randomizer and 20 for presentation. Simon presents for Jose. "A taste of Spain." Rocco says it is a stroke of genius. The tortilla is delicious. The sauces are smooth. He thinks the pork is chewy. Lorena says the pork wasn't cooked correctly. She likes the crunch. Cat says there is a lot of technique in the dish. Here comes the scores: 81 vs. 85. Okay I'll admit, I didn't agree with this result. They are both good sports.
Round Two: Four seed "The Fox" Karen Akunowicz vs. second seed "The Dancing Spice Queen" Maneet Chauhan ... the only TOC champion left in the competition. Okay, Karen's two restaurants are the Fox and the Knife. Now I get why Guy calls Karen "The Fox." Motherhood has done something for Karen. She's just freaking glowing. I wasn't a huge fan of hers on TOC, but I'm loving her here. Maneet does not disappoint with her chef's jacket and matching jewelry. Randomizer: Chicken livers, hearts of palm, tostapane, raw and cooked and wild card ingredient. Hunter comes out with a blue box and a white box. They have to pick one. They pick blue and get .... camel milk. A tostapane is basically a flat pan with holes cut in it used to toast bread. Maneet is making Nashville-spiced chicken liver, hearts of palm slaw with pate and fennel-berry compote. It's interesting that Maneet is wearing a different chef jacket in her talking head. Have I mentioned how much I love Simon's hat? He's presenting for Maneet. Karen is making fried chicken liver with hearts of palm caponata and creamy polenta. I'll be honest here..... I would not care for either dish at this point. So let's see what they do. Maneet is really working on the hearts of palm here in multiple ways
Judging: Simon presents for Maneeet, Rocco said the chef was very smart in handling the randomizer. It's well seasoned. He thinks the pate is a little wet for him. Lorena says it is beautiful. She loves the crispy slaw. Cat says for the amount of time it was impressive. She said the pate was a little grainy. Rocco says it is a great and amazing dish. He likes the plating. Lots of flavor and deliciousness. Cora didn't get a lot of crispness from the livers. She likes it as a whole dish. Lorena says it is creative. Overall she says it is a successful dish. Scores: 81 to 88. Again, very good sports I liked both chefs.
Round Three: This is the one that will hurt me. I mean I had favorites in the first two rounds.... but not favorites like these two. Eight seed Shota Nakajima vs. three seed "Mayday" Mei Lin. I'm a fan of both of them from their Top Chef days. Mei says she's known him for years and has eaten at his restaurant. Here comes the randomizer. Goat, sea beans, Comal, Smoky and spicy and audience gets to move one up. The Chefs lobby the audience for protein. Audience votes protein so they get duck legs. The Comal is like a flat smooth grilling surface. Mei decides to go Mexican. Didn't see that coming. Shota is doing some smooth butchering on the duck. He is making lollipop smoked duck leg with a pickled sea bean salad. Justin will present for Shota. We cut to Jet and Adam in the stew room. Mei is making a duck leg with chipotle mole, sea bean salsa verde and duck fat rice. To be honest I'm much more interested in this food than the chicken livers from round 2.
Judging: Justin presents Shota's dish first. Cat says "Wow." Lorena says everything gels together. She loves the technique. Her critique is the leg is undercooked. Rocco says it is sophisticated cooking. Cat loves the cream sauce on the bottom. She also thinks the duck leg needed more time. Simon presents for Mei. Rocco says the duck is less tender, but more satisfying. He likes the stacking of flavors. He says it is extraordinary. Lorena loves the clever use of sea beans. She thinks the rice is slightly overcooked. She said she'd eat this dish again and again. Cat loves the sauces and smokiness. She says if she was nitpicking the duck leg could use more finesse. Scores 84 to 91! More great sports. You can tell they are friends.
The final round: one seed "The Jetster" Jet Tila vs. six seed "the big tuna" Adam Sobel. This is another hard round for me. I love Jet, but Adam has really won me over. Jet and Adam have been friends for over 20 years. I don't even know who I want to win here. I want the both to win. Randomizer: pork collar, tarro root, Ijabe, sweet and sour and ....... total respin. The chefs aren't happy. They don't want a respin. They lobby Guy to get the audience to refuse the respin. Guy checks the bylaws of Flavortown on his phone and says the law says the audience has overall authority..... The audience all plays into what the chefs want so there is no respin. Jet is making taro rice with Vietnamese lemongrass pork collar. Simon explains what the Ijabe is. It kind of looks like a form of a whisk, used for breaking down greens while cooking. Have I mentioned Simon's hat yet? Justin is presenting for Adam who is cooking Char Siu pork collar with pineapple puree and taro chips. Jet tells story about how he and Adam were chefs in Vegas long before his Food Network days. Jet is making a taro and ginger scented rice bowl, with a sweet and sour pork collar. The ijabe seems very cool, but I think it would be a pain to clean.
Judging: Justin presents for Adam first. Lorena likes it. She thinks the taro root is a little undercooked. Rocco says the pork collar is miraculous. he thinks it is craveable. Cat loved the pork. Also calls it craveable. Simon presents second for Jet. Rocco thinks the dish meets expectations and is punchy and colorful. Lorena loves the dish. She likes the crispy taro. She says if nitpicking she would improve the presentation. Cat says the flavor is a show stopper. Scores: 86 v. 88.
Take aways for the night. Only one score in the 90s. It's amazing to see how emotional these chefs get. There is a funny shot of a chef's reaction in the stew room right at the end of the last round. I can't describe it more without spoiling it. Next week is the final four and the championship..... after that it is all over! The previews for next week look good. They tease the new mystery judge as someone who won the title of "Best Restaurant in the World." Will it be the chef from Noma? I personally would love to see Thomas Keller in as a judge.
Well that's it for this week. Next week is the end. I didn't do great guessing the winners off the judge comments this week I was 2 out of 4 correct.

2023.04.02 12:17 AbstractEnigma Afraid and looking into rehab

Hey all,
Given that this is the most welcoming and caring community on the internet, I wanted to reach out for some encouragement/any words that will help calm my anxiety.
I've been gradually getting worse over the last few years with drinking, and it's at a point where I'm scared that I'm going to deal permanent damage to myself. I'm 29 and have a loving girlfriend, family, and friends, but I'm terrified that I'm going to throw it all away due to this.
I've fallen into a pattern where every day I promise myself not to drink, but the urge rises out of the blue every afternoon. It leads to waking up every night panicking that I'll develop a form of cancer or liver failure. Is there a way to come back from this and ensure I can still live a long life?
I've been looking into inpatient rehab facilities near me (I'm in Michigan), but each one seems to have its faults (either very poor reviews or being incredibly expensive).
Does anyone have any recommendations for finding an inpatient facility that treats patients humanely while not breaking the bank?
I can barely get to even 2 days consistently sober, and I'm trying to do everything I can to maintain long term sobriety.
Much love to everyone out there. I appreciate everyone in this wonderful community.

2023.04.02 11:49 TheNewLiberal #GEXIX [Kent] TheNewLiberal pays a visit to the Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate

On the next part of my journey on the campaign trail, I made a quick trip north from my visit in Ramsgate to the beautiful seaside town of Margate - an area I know very well indeed. And more specifically on this campaign stop, I have decided to spend it visiting the famous Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother Hospital in Margate - a fantastic facility that services much of East Kent and indeed beyond that catchment area as well at times.
These facilities are the lifeblood of our Health and Social Care system in this nation - our hospitals heal the injuries of the men and women of our country, take care of the sick, and look after the elderly. They are part of an NHS family which we are all proud to protect in the Conservative Party - something that the government have sadly failed to do. We proposed a motion to protect an NHS that is free at the point of use - a motion which was sadly voted down by the Government, which speaks volumes about their commitment to accessible healthcare in this nation.
In our manifesto, we have repeated that commitment - because at our heart as a party, we recognise just how important our National Health Service is to our nation, and we will not only protect it as free at the point of use for future generations, but we will extend those freedoms. We have promised to reform NHS Dentistry, to bring it in line with the rest of the NHS, and make it free at the point of use as well - meaning that no one will have to pay huge sums to have healthy teeth ever again, and to accompany that we will ensure that NHS dentist recruitment restores numbers to 25,000.
We in the Conservatives often also ensure that our focus is balanced when it comes to the NHS, because of course not everything is perfect, and one of the key things that we often refer back to is NHS waste. There is up to £7 Billion of NHS waste that we could reallocate towards frontline NHS services, and if we are elected into Government we will instruct NHS Trusts to do exactly that.
Overall, if you want a Government that cares about your health and will prioritise it, then you need to vote for the Conservative Party into Government - and hopefully vote for me in Kent too.

2023.04.02 10:36 Jackno1 Therapists showing self-pity and one-sided empathy

Something that's surprised in seeing therapists talk online is how self-pitying so many of them are. It's like any difficulty gets them going "Woe is me! I have it so hard!"
They chose to get an expensive graduate degree, and still have to work at their job for several years before making serious money? They sought out a career in listening to people's feelings all day and now they have to spend their work day listening to people's feelings? Woe is them! They have clients who cancel without paying extra to hold termination sessions that would help with the therapist's feelings and possibly give the therapist useful feedback? Woe is them! They get feedback but it's critical and points out their flaws? Woe is them! They get a bad review? Surely no one has ever suffered so much!
And I think this fits with the one-sidedness of the empathy you see around therapy harm and therapy abuse. Because if the topic comes up, many of them immediately show intense empathy for the therapist. (This is why I think it's often not about inherent narcissistic tendencies, but about a toxic professional culture, and therapists buying into prejudice against people diagnosed with mental illnesses. They're often demonstrably capable of empathy, but only for people in their professional category) They're so filled with empathy and concern for the therapist that the often breeze right past what the client is dealing with. Or they spin the story of the unreasonable harshly critical client who bails at the first rupture, tells everyone they're a terrible therapist, and never even gives the therapist a chance to attempt repair. And they insist other people don't have enough empathy for their problems. Hence the constant refrain of "Therapist are only human!" in response to pointing out that therapists can cause harm, it's sometimes serious harm, and clients are left in a bad situation. They literally feel dehumanized by criticism, because they have so much self-pity about their own situation and so much one-sided empathy for fellow therapists. Any criticism feels like a total empathy failure, and they don't understand why we don't feel as bad for them as they feel for themselves.
I think it's a common pattern with abusive people in care positions. They often genuinely do have problems, but also they have power over another person. So they take things out on the person lower on the hierachy, and when that person calls them out, they're all "But what about how hard I have it? Don't you care about my feelings?" And it's never enough empathy for them until you've empathized so hard with them that you've shut up about how you feel when they treat you that way. They don't have the courage to push back against the people up the hierachy, so they take it out on you, the person they have power over. And that's not a comfortable thing to face, so they use self-pity to avoid facing this, and dwell on how wronged they are, so they don't have to think about the wrongs they're complicit in. And they accuse you of not having empathy for them or not letting them be human if you bring these uncomfortable truths to their attention or call out how they (or other therapists, who they instantly empathize with and feel protective of) are treating you.

2023.04.02 10:19 pan1c_ Experiencing dizzyness out of nowhere for several days, seemingly when I turn my head in different directions

Age - 31
Sex - M
Height - 6ft
Weight - 150lb
Race - White
Duration of complaint - 4-5 days.
Location - On Tuesday I woke up, and instantly the room started spinning, to the point I had to close my eyes for a whole 1-2 minutes. That day was the worst of it, it was like seemingly turning my head certain directions, up or down, up and to the right/left, down to the right/left, etc, suddenly or sometimes not even suddenly, I'd just casually turn my head and I'd get dizzy to the point where I had to sit down. Every day since then, it's been lessening in effect, to the point where today it did not occur once at work that I know of, only literally one time when I got home and sat down in my chair. Extremely mild compared to the beginning, lasting less than two seconds and virtually no discomfort after. My coworkers told me it could be an 'inner ear infection', but my ears feel normal. For me it's my neck, I feel like I pinched some kind of weird nerve in my neck and that's what's causing it. Since the first day, if I turn my head upwards and slightly to the right, I can feel a knot in my neck and doing just that can almost instantly trigger the dizzyness, as well as looking down and to the left slightly which also seems to put some strain on that same spot.
Any existing relevant medical issues - None, high blood pressure, but that's mostly due to my medications.
Current medications - Suboxone, 8yrs or so. 8-12mg a day right now. Adderall since I was a little kid, I've taken it on and off throughout my life, for the last two or three years I've been taking it again for work, it just really helps with my motivation and patience dealing with customers, and just generally being more effective overall. 20mg a day right now. I don't drink any alcohol anymore, I mean, yeah I'll have a couple beers for special occasions with family or friends, but these are like once a year type situations. I do smoke cigarettes, trying to quit, tried the Hyde thing but not a fan. I smoke weed recreationally and have since I was 16 or 17, I smoke every day, but probably a lot less than most people I would imagine. All of these are completely normal and not out of the ordinary for me, no major change has happened with my medications in a long time.
Include a photo if relevant - N/A
I would appreciate any advice or information you guys can provide. A bit of background, according to my phone on average I walk (or skateboard and walk) 8-10 miles on average 5 days a week, 4 miles to work and 4 miles home, while going to the grocery store and other errands in between, all on foot. With my schedule, making it to the local store before they close can be troublesome because of the fact that I have to walk, so having to go the extra 2 miles to the urgent care, just to have to sit there for 45 minutes to several hours, it's a lot for me. It's also not only me I have to take care of as far as going to the store every night, so that's another problem. I would love to hear what you guys have to say, and if the general consensus is this is something more serious and I need to get checked, I'll go to urgent care tomorrow, it's my day off.

#GEXIX [Cornwall and Devon] Sephronar gets tackled for kissing babies at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter
https://preview.redd.it/attc3kxp8fra1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=1aadfc2cac463a609106899892bad6aa4d408583
Swimming up the south coast of Cornwall swiftly became the south coast of Devon, the Conservative and Unionist Party for Cornwall and Devon thrashed through the waters like a speedboat, before turning left up the glistening waters of the River Exe and finally jumping on the banks of Exeter city centre next to Salmonpool Lane - an aptly named street for such an occasion. Passers-by double-taked in sheer surprise at the site before them, as Sephronar turned on his self-drying suit and clipped in his heelys before speeding off across the A3015 and up Barrack Road - making a B-Line for Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital which lay just a few hundred metres away - speeding past the Wyvern Army Barracks, making sure to salute each and every serviceperson which served there as he did so.
In this journey, Sephronar had amassed quite the following - it felt that half of the city of Exeter was behind him, sprinting to keep up with the candidate's heely skills - there was yet again a resounding buzz in the air at the candidate's presence, almost as if they could feel the winds of change trailing behind him, the smell of potential emanating from their Godly aura. They all wanted to get in on this experience, and they were not going to miss it for the world.
Arriving at the site of Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Sephronar did a triple backflip before landing on the steps of the Wonford Hospital site - cradled in the arms of several dashing junior doctors.
"Good morning everyone! What a pleasure it is to be here - and thank you for everything that you do to keep us all safe, the United Kingdom would genuinely be a much worse place without you, and that is why we attempted to pass a Motion this term, written by myself, that called on the Government to guarantee a National Health Service which will always be free at the point of use. But do you know what they did instead? They voted against it, they turned it down - God knows why, perhaps because they are all planning to privatise it if you elect them for another term (not that a minority government is a particularly strong mandate for change anyway), and instead of guaranteeing an NHS which is free for all, they have presented and passed exactly zero policy this term on the subject of Health and Social Care. Do you think that is acceptable? Because I certainly do not! A Conservative and Unionist Party-led Government would never let you down so terribly, because we know just how important our front line NHS services are - people like you literally save lives, so why would we not ensure that this institution and you as NHS workers are protected?"
"But any case, I'm sure you are all keeping that fact at the top of your minds in this election, and are getting ready to kick out a Solidarity candidate as your Member of Parliament in this constituency - that's the main way that you can express your discontent after all; sadly you can't vote out a Government, but you can vote out a specific MP, and do not forget that the Member of Parliament that you voted for (just about - 9,000 vote majority over me) abandoned you at the first possible opportunity, immediately joining the House of Lords! At least when I joined the House of Lords it was as the Marquess of St Ives - an area in this constituency which I was and am extremely fortunate to represent. I love our constituency, it is my home, and I would never let you down like that."
"But please show me around this amazing hospital! I am eager to see what brilliant services that you have here!"
Making their way through the Bowmoor House entrance, the candidate was shown through several departments along the corridor - the Hematology Centre, the award winning Cardiology Unit, and of course the Royal Mail Post Box - before arriving at the Short Stay School, upon which time several press ops were taken with students. The tour group then made their way out of the back entrance through the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre, and into the RD&E First Steps Nursery.
Surrounded by young children astounded at the presence of such an amazing person, the candidate stood up tall on a mini-chair and addressed the constituents, while the media scrambled to get a good shot of the speech:
"Ladies and Gentlemen, Babies, I was pleased to have just received a tour of the main centre of the hospital - and while I am of course blown away by both the amazing health service staff that we have here in RD&E Hospital, and what they are doing here with the equipment and services that they have access to, it is woefully clear to me that they have been let down by this Government. They are clearly underfunded, overstretched, and close to breaking point - and to me, there is only one way to level the blame."
"This Government has had six months to change things in the United Kingdom for the better - and what have they done with that time? They have played around with their model train sets, and nationalised a couple of things; that is a terrible disservice to the men and women who work here at RD&E, and they quite frankly deserve better than this Government. There has been absolutely nothing delivered this term in terms of Health and Social Care policy - what an absolute bloody joke that is; at least it would be if millions of people's lives did not depend on the services that the National Health Service provides. How is it that a Government elected to serve the people completely neglects the people's basic needs such as Health - and that is before you even begin to consider the other departments that have had no policy announced this term, such as Justice, such as Foreign Affairs even! Is this really what you want or expect from your Government? I know that it is not what I expect from mine - I demand better."
"But the people at the top of the minority coalition Government have had plenty of time to do something, and they have failed, and now you the people are quite rightly demanding better - and I am here to give you better. The Conservative and Unionist Party stand poised and ready for Government, after a term of preparing ourselves to lead. We have build ourselves up again in the polls, and we are hoping for considerable gains in this election - maybe as many as forty seats in Parliament - and if that happens we will be opening talks with parties such as Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and maybe new parties such as Unity who have entered the fray. But let me be clear, we will not under any circumstances enter into Government with Solidarity, because - ideology differences aside - they have let you down this term, and you deserve better, we will not under any circumstances enable them to carry on serving you in Government; because they do not serve you, they only take for themselves, and we cannot allow that any longer."
"We have an ambitious plan if we are elected to serve you in Government - it is a programme for Government, a wishlist if you like of the British people, of things that we know that you have been calling out for now for far too long, and we want to give these things to you! We call our manifesto 'the plan for tomorrow', because we know that the future does not have to be so bleak - things can change if you vote for that change. For those of you who have already read our manifesto, you'll know just how exciting it is throughout - but I am here to speak to you specifically today about the policies that we have put together to support and revive our National Health Service; because I know what a huge priority that is to you all. You want to feel safe, you want to know that if you get sick or hurt then you will be healed by the miracle workers in places such as this - and I am sad that at the moment you don't feel that you are safe from harm. We will change that - and our manifesto outlines how."
"First and foremost, we are proud to repeat our commitment to the freedom and affordability of the National Health Service, because we recognise just how important the institution of a National Health Service which is free to use is for the United Kingdom - we will protect our NHS, and be proud of the strong foundations that we have built it on, and we will immediately make a Statement to the House of Commons guaranteeing that a Conservative Government will protect a National Health Service which is free at the point of us. Ultimately, when it comes down to it, issues such as this should not be political - they are not a matter of left wing or right wing, they are a matter of what is right and what is wrong - and it is only right to protect an NHS free at the point of use. But sadly the Government do not see it that way, sadly they have politicised the NHS, and who knows what their plans are - it genuinely would not surprise me at this point if they made moves to privatise the NHS."
"Keeping in with this theme of protecting our institutions and your security as people who live in this great country as well, we want to be clear to you that we strongly believe that this 'free at the point of use' principle in our eyes does not only apply to frontline NHS services - but to all services offered as a part of the National Health Services; so we will guarantee free prescriptions for example, so that no one is locked out of accessing life-changing medication, and we will go even further than this too. As many of you will know, dentistry has been a personal priority of mine this term - but the Government have consistently ignored it, batting away questions that I asked in Health MQs with sarcastic or half-assed replies - so I wanted to do something radical with our policy on NHS dentistry in this manifesto. So we are pledging to not only boost the numbers of NHS dentists back up to the vital number of 25,000 that we have stumbled down from in recent years, but we will go much further than that. We are promising to bring NHS dentistry properly into the NHS family - meaning that any NHS dental treatment that you receive, whether that be check ups, crowns, root canals, anything - any NHS dental treatment will be free, and you will be granted the right to receive that treatment as part of the NHS duty of care. No one should have to endure damaged or painful teeth because of unaffordability. We will do this alongside reforming the NHS contract, and workforce requirements, and will make a Statement on this as soon as we are fortunate enough to form a Government to serve you."
"Of course, while the National Health Service is a national treasure - they can't get everything right! I mean who can, right? No one is perfect. We recognise that there is a lot of waste in the NHS - whether that be overspending on equipment such as gloves, or unnecessarily complex or inefficient administration - estimates put this waste at as much as £7 Billion. We will embark on a review of NHS Waste, and reallocate this funding immediately into frontline services such as nurses and doctors, or life saving equipment. That is our promise to you, we will cut out all of the waste in the NHS so that they can serve you efficiently."
"I want to finish by saying that I recognise how agonising waiting times can be when you are trying to get life-saving treatment such as operations - and we want to change that. People wait far too long for treatment, and sadly the Government have ignored that simple duty of Government - we will reduce waiting times for any treatments (urgent or non-urgent) to a maximum of one month, so that you are given the treatment that you deserve urgently so that you can enjoy a full life as soon as properly, and your time is not robbed by inefficiency."
"These are our promises to you, and my promise as the candidate for this constituency is that I will fight for Cornwall and Devon's fair share - and as I plan to be serving at the top of Government, I can see that being a very real possibility!"
"Thank you all so much for your time, make sure that you get out and vote on Polling Day!"
Finishing his speech, the candidate jumped and glided down into the crowd of infants, kissing numerous babies on the head much to the shock of many mothers their - he then bolted out the door towards his next campaign event, but was chased down by local Exeter Chiefs rugby team player Gabby Cantorna, before passing out on the pavement.

The Conservative Party Leader spoke with members of the media today on the steps of 4 Matthew Parker Street, London. The purpose was to remind the British public what is at stake at this election, and what is needed to begin to turn Britain's fortunes around. It has been a difficult six months - indeed, a difficult few years for Britain, as the crazed lefties focused intently on nationalising our industry, spending hundreds of billions worth of taxpayer's money on vanity projects, and have done not much else apart from playing with their train sets.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, thank you so much for joining me here today at Conservative Party Headquarters in London, it is a pleasure to have the opportunity to speak with you about our plan for the United Kingdom - what we want to fix, what we want to change, and how we want to deliver through the mandate that we hope to gain through our manifesto in this election - 'The Plan for Tomorrow'. We have named our manifesto that because we believe that, despite everything that we have collectively gone through over the last few years, there is still hope - there is still a light on the horizon of our future, and we know that the people of the United Kingdom are desperate to seize that light as opposed to simply snuffing it out with more Solidarity."
"After six months of lacklustre Governance, being led by a dysfunctional minority government who have failed at every basic function of Government, let alone succeeded to take your priorities into account - from failing to turn up to answer Ministers Questions in Parliament, to flushing billions of pounds literally down the toilet with errors in their budget and nationalisation projects which no one asked for - we in the Conservatives understand why you are so frustrated. Solidarity claims that because around 30% of the country say that they intend to vote for them in this election, they believe that that they have the mandate to govern - but, the last time I checked, 30% is not a majority - it means that 70% of the country do not want their extreme policies, do not support their reckless programmes and ridiculous spending. Well in this election, it is time to prove them wrong and show them that the country doesn't endorse their utter failure to govern this country sensible and responsibly over the last twelve months. Britain can do better."
"In our manifesto, we have developed both a bold and radical set of policies which draw directly on inspirations from both 'One Nation Conservatism' and 'Cameronism' government - recognising that we must concentrates our efforts on the need to deliver both a strong economy as well as strong public services and more compassionate social policies. If we deliver on all of these priorities in tandem, we can be assured that Britain will be revitalised with unprecedented growth and prosperity, as well as kickstarting a kinder and more respectful society - where the only limits in life are your talents and your motivation."
"On delivering a strong economy - sadly, our economy is currently in tatters due to the reckless spending programme from the government, and we will rectify that immediately with a 'Grand Repeal Budget' in the first month of our tenure, to reverse the nationalisations, extortionate spending sprees, and vanity projects that have come from the Government. We will repeal the nationalisations, and boost our economy by developing a new Regional Development Fund, and by overhauling our tax system to favour economic growth and business development. We will also deliver a brand new 'British Investment Bank' to unlock the much-needed productivity of our Small and Medium Enterprises, and to focus on local projects which need support."
"Let me be clear, when I talk about a compassionate society, I do not mean that we will be soft on crime - a Conservative Party Government will get tough on the issue of law and order, delivering harsher sentences for serious offenders and reviewing our drug laws. We will also not endorse a 'layabout' attitude and will finally ensure that those who can work do work - no more sitting on welfare allowing the state to deal with all your issues, if you can work you will work. We will do this by completely reforming our society; be that through connecting education to business, or changing our tax laws to favour workers. While we do so, we will make sure that the benefits given to those working are increased - as well as ensure that our precious institutions such as the National Health Service are protected and enhanced, to give the citizens of this country a comfortable lifestyle that they need - such as through free dental care, or reducing NHS waiting lists."
"I am really truly excited by the change that we are proposing in our manifesto, I believe that this could truly be a turning point for our United Kingdom, but I am sincerely apologetic for the pain and turmoil that has been allowed to take place under the current Government - The Labour Party have a lot to answer for, the so-called 'Opposition', who did not oppose a single thing this term and enabled the Government to operate as essentially Rose III. We are fully expecting them to team up after the election, but we have made clear to the Labour Party that we would be open to working with them too, to keep Solidarity away from Downing Street. Failing this, if they choose to once again prop up Solidarity, we will be fighting hard to challenge them both in Opposition - and we will actually oppose the Government, as opposed to appeasing them."
"I believe that the choice at this election has never been clearer - you can either vote for a continuation of the chaos that we have experienced over the last six months, or you can vote for change; you can vote for a better future. If you vote for us in this election, and for our manifesto 'The Plan for Tomorrow', we will not let you down - we will turn this country around, and we will deliver a stronger and more prosperous economy, as well as a kinder more compassionate society with every resident of the United Kingdom at the front and centre of our minds. Ladies and Gentlemen, vote for better - Vote Conservative in this election. Thank you!"
The members of the press in the crowd erupted into a chorus of questions, which the Conservative Party Leader answered one by one until they were all speechless - this speech was broadcast to televisions around the country that evening, capturing the imagination of literally millions of swing voters.

2023.04.02 09:50 TeddyBonkers- Racial and religious harassment, is it worth pursuing?

I Need some advice on what to do here as I'm really not sure whether to move on or pursue this as this isn't the first time this has happened, Also i apologise about the length of the post as there's quite a bit of info ...
I'm 32 years old and have worked in retail all my life, I'm an easy-going, down-to-earth kind of guy that has always maintained my professionalism apart from a few moments where it has called for it.
I'm extremely skilled in people management and have done almost every job a manager has been required to do in a role multiple times and I have always conducted myself to the best of my ability.
In September I began a new job where the pay was good and there was a lot of room for progression.
When I first started I made quite the splash, several managers complimented me on my work ethic as well as my utilization of my skills in order to get the best out of staff and put the most in the till, I was deployed to a floor that suited my experience and for the first four months I was extremely happy in this role, I was making a massive difference and had turned my floor around in terms of takings and staff discipline with regards to how they behaved on a day to day basis, Previously they ran the floor with managers having to cater to their whims and go out of their way just to get them to do the jobs they where paid to do and there were always issues when general housekeeping had to be done such as maintaining the staff room, etc which was shuffled around weekly to different floors so everyone had to do it.
Cut to 2 months ago when I was asked by my line manager and my department head to attend a hearing where I was accused of being Anti-Islamic and had made inappropriate comments to young girls who were stationed on my floor, I won't go too much into it but I was accused of racism basically and then suggesting sexual acts to young females. (2 at this point).
I obviously denied the allegations but elaborated on the conversation that they referred to where a staff member had asked me what my religious orientation was and I explained that I was an atheist, this staff member asked again if I believed in god this time and I stated that I didn't and that "in my mind, if he did exist, he wasn't what we thought he was because of all the cruel stuff he let happen" Let me add at this point she demanded that I should read the Qu'ran and I stated I maybe would get around to it, at no point in this conversation though did she seem uncomfortable or did she signal that she was uncomfortable as she was asking me questions, I had other stuff to do so I left these 2 staff to their jobs and moved on. My line manager who was a Muslim saw nothing wrong with this and neither did my Department Head. I Was sent on my way and was told not to entertain any further conversations of this nature in the future which I took on board and carried on.
Over the coming month, I was spoken to several times more by my Line Manager with regards to conversations that I was having with staff that had sexual undertones and anti-Islamist undertones, despite the fact that I maintained that I had not had these conversations with these staff, the complaints kept coming in, thick and fast and always with the same accusation but from different staff, It got to one point where I actually began crying because of the stress that these accusations where having on my mental health... at this point, it was all around the workplace, a number of managers had even voiced support for me over these accusations as they were fragrantly untrue. My line manager at this point had asked several other managers whom I worked with if they had ever witnessed any of these conversations taking place or if they had heard me ever say anything with regards to the accusations that were leveled against me, every one of them stated that they had never heard me say anything that was inappropriate. At this point, there were around 8 allegations regarding my conduct that had been lodged against me and I was invited to a probationary review meeting, I Had conducted these myself in previous jobs and knew that if it was being done early that then you were being dismissed. Prior to this meeting, i was approached by a colleague of mine who was someone i worked with very closely and he himself was Muslim, He had said to me that he knew i hadn't had those conversations with these staff and that the previous night, which was his late he had overheard 3 of the girls who had put accusations in about me talking in the changing rooms when they thought he wasn't there, their exact words where as follows Girl 1: "I Can't believe *** Still works here, if people said stuff like that about me i'd just leave." Girl 2: "I Know, I've been asking people if he has ever said anything to them" Girl 1: "Have you!? What did they say?" Girl 2: "Most of them said nothing, with ****** accusation we had to ass stuff to it, We couldn't just say he showed us a picture of his cats" Girl 1" Yeah, I know... i said he was racist and that he was asking me dirty questions and offered to sleep with me" Girl 3: "And they believed it?" Girl 1: Not at first, No, i had to get some other girls to say stuff about him before they listened" Girl 2: Yeah, Same. What should we do next to get him into trouble?" *Whilst all laughing* Girl 1: "I'm gonna go around and ask other girls, it doesn't even need to be a bad thing, if he's been seen to be talking to her you can just make stuff up as we did" Girl 3: Yeah?, It's his own fault anyway, he's too strict so he has to go haha" Girl 1: "HAHA, either way as long as he's gone I don't care, Just keep saying that he's done stuff and eventually they'll either sack him or he'll just leave"
He fed this back to me and I asked him if he would be willing to stand up and say that if they asked and he said he would. On the day of the meeting, I was a little late as i was that nervous i had to go to the toilet beforehand and was on there for 20 mins just shitting my life away. I also looked like utter cow shit as the stress of it had began to take it's toll on my mental health .
During the meeting they had said that over the last 2 months they had received 8 complaints about my conduct and they went through them one at a time, Once girl had said that I was stalking her out of work and that she was "In fear for her life" because I had apparently been calling her at all times of the day and night (I Didn't have her number either) They went through each one, One after another and we were in there for 3 hours, Prior to the meeting I had spoken to the few managers who were still friendly with me and basically told them how much of an honour it was to work with them. After the meeting to my surprise, I was sent back to work and a few of the managers in my department were shocked to see me, I got back to work and found that I had been removed from the weekly planner and removed from the rota (Which I found really shady like their decision was made up before I attended that meeting and the only reason they didn't suspend me was because of the witness testaments) This upset me when I saw I was removed from the planner and I kept the copies in case something was brought up again. I was told that I would get an answer by the latest the following Monday which was seven days away.
I continued to work and a further 4 complaints were made about me that week from the same clique of female staff when I got to work on Monday I was pulled into an office and given a letter of suspension, due to "Ongoing harassment of racial minorities and inappropriate comments made with regards to race, sexual orientation and gender" I Had been surprised they hadn't suspended me prior to this as that is usual practice and I had taken that as a good sign, A week later I received a letter stating that I had failed to meet the expectations of my Probation and being terminated with immediate effect, I was to be paid my weeks notice and all accrued holiday as a goodwill gesture and given 7 days to appeal.
I took a few days to think and I also began applying for jobs after 5 days I submitted an appeal, which was to be held with the store manager, 2 days prior to the first meeting I was contacted by a job and offered an interview which clashed with the appeal date so I rescheduled and then the second appeal I had to reschedule again due to another job opportunity and I had explained when I appealed that I had applied for various jobs and that I would not reschedule an interview or turn one down for an appeal meeting, the third letter i received on a Monday with an invitation to an appeal meeting that was dated for the previous Friday and was told that if I did not attend then they would make the decision without me taking into account the reasons I had put in my appeal letter. I Had stated in that letter that I had been targeted because i was an atheist and i apparently was "Godless" in one girl's words. I was also targetted for being a straight white male and was called names like "Coloniser", and "Milkybar kid" as well as several Punjabi words used as slurs for white men, i was constantly asked to repeat Punjabi words that were Profanity words and when I refused i was told i was boring and that "I Must hate Asians" I was also told by several other managers who themselves where Muslim that they where targetting me because i was White and they don't like white people telling them what to do when i pointed out several racist behaviors and opinions that they had i was told "You can't be racist to White people", I pointed out that their behaviour was harassment as they were told not to talk to anyone with regards to their accusations only to be told by several staff that these girls had approached them and asked them to lie about my conduct and i was disappointed that nobody had seen this.
I was told in the letter regarding my appeal that they had found no evidence of any staff targetting me because of my gender, religion, orientation or race. They ignored the parts where i had asked them to speak to the managers that had overheard the conversations that they had witnessed and again found no evidence of wrongdoing. (They hadn't even spoken to him, i asked him if they had questioned him and he said no).
I had even sent them pictures where the girl who was "In fear for her life" because of me had commented on several of my cat's pictures and liked them as well, Not the behaviour of someone who's scared for their life... Her own sister even said that she knew she had made those accusations up because she had wanted to get attention and sympathy from other managers...
Mostly I'm just angry that this can happen and that people can say stuff that can be disproven and I've still lost my job and my source of income, I was wondering if it was worth pursuing any further does anyone think?

2023.04.02 09:49 SylvPMDRTD Idea Bouncing with ChatGPT- Energy and Food-Recent Inspiration-Limitations and Design-Nested/Hierachical Cognitive Reference Points-Medium Length-Benefits-Market and Feasability

**Submission Statement**
While browsing Reddit today, I found a few articles that teased my brain. One was the involvement of screaming plants, which I initially used as a bridge from previous discussions to supply a framework to the one below. The chat generally outlines the limitations and implementation of a system combining energy production from solar panels and plants and a way to supplement food production. It does note limitations and assesses the articles I drew inspiration from.
**Line of Discussion**
Given the chat below, what are some of the limitations that could pose as hindrances? In what ways can these be addressed? What are the potential benefits and drawbacks from your point of view?
**CHAT**
I just Read an article that stated plants could possibly signal distress via hypersonic frequencies. While this still, likely needs further exploration, given the acoustic type AI mentioned in our Conversation Ai in US Intelligence. Could such a thing be used to provide a monitoring system, that automatically takes care of plants, etc. outside of a visual computing modality?
The idea of using hypersonic frequencies to monitor plants is an interesting one, but it is important to note that the current scientific understanding of such signals is still limited and requires further research to confirm its validity. However, assuming that such signals could be reliably detected and interpreted, it is possible that an acoustic AI monitoring system could be developed to automatically take care of plants without relying on visual data.
Such a system could work by using sensors to detect hypersonic signals emitted by plants and using machine learning algorithms to analyze these signals and determine if the plant is experiencing distress or other issues. Based on this information, the system could then automatically adjust factors such as watering, temperature, and lighting to provide optimal growing conditions for the plant.
While this type of system could potentially be useful in certain settings, such as large-scale agriculture or greenhouse operations, it is important to note that it would still require regular human oversight and maintenance to ensure that the system is functioning properly and to address any issues that may arise. Additionally, there may be ethical considerations related to using AI to monitor and control the growth of living organisms, which would need to be carefully considered before such a system could be implemented on a larger scale.
Asses this article please and provide a general overview of themes and topics
I'm sorry, but you haven't provided an article for me to assess. Could you please provide the article you are referring to?
Sorry, got ahead of myself for a minute. Here it is, although it is just the abstract. Also describe your reasoning by listing the five most influential academic disciplines and ten concepts that impacted your cognitive reference points. I want this done to a second level, if the cognitive reference points are conisdered to be hierarchical and nested.
Thank you for providing the article abstract. However, you have requested two different tasks - an article assessment and a personal cognitive reference point analysis. Due to the complexity of the second task, I will first address the article assessment.
Article assessment:
The article abstract discusses the potential for using machine learning to identify patients who are at risk for developing hypertension. The authors propose a method for using electronic health record (EHR) data to train a machine learning model to predict which patients are likely to develop hypertension. The model would take into account factors such as age, gender, race, blood pressure, and medications.
The authors state that their model achieved high accuracy in predicting which patients would develop hypertension, and they suggest that it could be used to identify high-risk patients and provide them with targeted interventions to prevent or delay the onset of hypertension. However, the abstract does not provide details on how the model was developed, how it was tested, or how it would be implemented in a clinical setting.
Overall, the article abstract presents an interesting idea for using machine learning to improve hypertension prevention efforts, but without access to the full article, it is difficult to assess the study's methodology, results, and potential limitations.
(Potential False Repsonse? Unsure of reference article in previous discussions.)
Personal cognitive reference point analysis:
As an AI language model, I do not have cognitive reference points in the same way that humans do. I have been programmed with a vast amount of information across many different academic disciplines and fields of knowledge, and my responses are based on the information that has been inputted into my system. However, if I were to attempt to identify the five most influential academic disciplines and ten concepts that have impacted my programming, I might list the following:
Disciplines:
  1. Computer Science
  2. Linguistics
  3. Statistics
  4. Psychology
  5. Philosophy
Concepts:
  1. Artificial Intelligence
  2. Natural Language Processing
  3. Machine Learning
  4. Deep Learning
  5. Neural Networks
  6. Sentiment Analysis
  7. Semantic Analysis
  8. Information Retrieval
  9. Ethics of AI
  10. Cognitive Computing
I hope this provides some insight into how I have been programmed and the concepts that underlie my responses.
While i understand you are an AI language model, I am assuming that the training data is in some way nested. What I specifically want is a reference to the fields the output to my question was asking about.
I apologize for any confusion. In regards to the cognitive reference point analysis, if I were to consider the concepts listed as hierarchical and nested, I might group them as follows:
  1. Artificial Intelligence
  1. Natural Language Processing
  1. Statistics
  2. Linguistics
  3. Philosophy
  4. Psychology
  5. Computer Science
This is just one possible way of organizing the concepts based on their relationships to each other. The fields referenced in the original prompt were not explicitly stated, so I made my best guess based on the information provided. I hope this helps clarify my reasoning.
Do the same with this article please. Photosystems II and I (PSII, PSI) are the reaction centre-containing complexes driving the light reactions of photosynthesis; PSII performs light-driven water oxidation and PSI further photo-energizes harvested electrons. The impressive efficiencies of the photosystems have motivated extensive biological, artificial and biohybrid approaches to ‘re-wire’ photosynthesis for higher biomass-conversion efficiencies and new reaction pathways, such as H2 evolution or CO2 fixation1,2. Previous approaches focused on charge extraction at terminal electron acceptors of the photosystems3. Electron extraction at earlier steps, perhaps immediately from photoexcited reaction centres, would enable greater thermodynamic gains; however, this was believed impossible with reaction centres buried at least 4 nm within the photosystems4,5. Here, we demonstrate, using in vivo ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, extraction of electrons directly from photoexcited PSI and PSII at early points (several picoseconds post-photo-excitation) with live cyanobacterial cells or isolated photosystems, and exogenous electron mediators such as 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ) and methyl viologen. We postulate that these mediators oxidize peripheral chlorophyll pigments participating in highly delocalized charge-transfer states after initial photo-excitation. Our results challenge previous models that the photoexcited reaction centres are insulated within the photosystem protein scaffold, opening new avenues to study and re-wire photosynthesis for biotechnologies and semi-artificial photosynthesis.
The article discusses recent research that challenges previous assumptions about the limitations of extracting electrons directly from photosystems in photosynthesis. Photosystems II and I (PSII, PSI) are the reaction centre-containing complexes that drive the light reactions of photosynthesis, with PSII performing light-driven water oxidation and PSI further photo-energizing harvested electrons. The efficiency of photosynthesis has led to extensive research into biological, artificial, and biohybrid approaches to improve biomass-conversion efficiencies and new reaction pathways.
Previous approaches to improving photosynthesis focused on charge extraction at the terminal electron acceptors of the photosystems. However, this study demonstrates the possibility of extracting electrons directly from photoexcited PSI and PSII at early points, even though the reaction centres are believed to be buried at least 4 nm within the photosystems. The study used in vivo ultrafast transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy to extract electrons from peripheral chlorophyll pigments participating in highly delocalized charge-transfer states after initial photo-excitation. The use of exogenous electron mediators such as 2,6-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone (DCBQ) and methyl viologen was also explored.
The results of the study challenge previous models that suggested the photoexcited reaction centres are insulated within the photosystem protein scaffold. This opens up new avenues for studying and re-wiring photosynthesis for biotechnologies and semi-artificial photosynthesis.
Overall, the article highlights the potential for further improving photosynthesis through re-wiring and the use of new electron extraction methods. It provides new insights into the mechanisms of photosynthesis and may have practical applications in the development of sustainable energy sources.
As for the second task, I apologize, but I cannot perform a personal cognitive reference point analysis for the same reasons as before - as an AI language model, I do not possess a personal cognitive reference point.
Other than carbon fixation, which I beleive the abstract mentions. Could this be applied to generate energy as well.
Yes, this research could potentially be applied to generate energy as well. The extraction of electrons directly from photoexcited PSI and PSII opens up new avenues for studying and re-wiring photosynthesis for biotechnologies and semi-artificial photosynthesis. This could involve the development of new methods for converting light energy into electrical energy or hydrogen fuel through the use of photosystems. The ultimate goal is to achieve higher biomass-conversion efficiencies and new reaction pathways, including the generation of energy from sustainable sources. Therefore, the potential applications of this research extend beyond carbon fixation and include the generation of energy from renewable sources.
Can you asess a link

What are the limitations of implementing a system that uses the general concepts associated with the previous assessments and how might such a system be implemented. Could it also address food issues. Are there problems with any materials needed, factor in some basic environmental factors, ethical concerns, and the article at this link as well. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41524-022-00765-z. The system should aim to provide or supplement solar power while providing a monitored growth system to optimize output in multiple modalities, and aim to make the crops edible.
Implementing a system that uses the general concepts associated with the previous assessments would face several limitations and challenges. Firstly, the implementation of such a system would require significant technological and financial resources. Developing and integrating the necessary technologies for monitoring plant growth, optimizing output, and harvesting energy would require significant investment in research and development.
Secondly, the system would require a reliable and efficient source of energy. While solar energy is a renewable and sustainable source of energy, its availability is dependent on factors such as location, weather conditions, and time of day. As a result, the system would need to be designed to account for these limitations, such as through the use of energy storage technologies or hybrid systems that can supplement solar power with other sources of energy.
Thirdly, the implementation of such a system would need to take into account environmental factors such as land use, water use, and the impact on biodiversity. The system would need to be designed to minimize its environmental footprint and to operate in a sustainable and responsible manner.
Ethical concerns would also need to be considered, such as the potential impact on local communities and the potential displacement of traditional farming practices and livelihoods.
Regarding food issues, the system could potentially address some of the challenges associated with food security and sustainable agriculture. By providing a monitored growth system, the system could optimize crop output and improve the efficiency of agricultural practices, potentially reducing waste and improving the availability of nutritious crops.
However, the implementation of such a system would face several challenges related to the materials needed, such as the availability of rare earth metals and other resources needed for the production of solar panels and other components. Additionally, the system would need to be designed to operate in a range of environments and conditions, which would require the development of robust and resilient materials and components.
In terms of implementation, the system could be designed to integrate different components and technologies, such as solar panels, sensors, and monitoring systems, into a single platform. The system could also be designed to be modular, allowing for easy customization and scalability. To optimize crop output, the system could incorporate techniques such as hydroponics or aquaponics, which can improve the efficiency of water and nutrient use.
Overall, the implementation of such a system would require significant investment in research and development, as well as careful consideration of environmental and ethical factors. However, the potential benefits of such a system, including improved food security and the provision of sustainable energy, make it a promising area for future research and innovation.
Despite the limitations is this possible or feasible given advances?
Given recent advances in various fields, it is possible to develop a system that uses the general concepts associated with the previous assessments. However, there are still limitations and challenges that need to be overcome.
For example, one major challenge is the cost of implementing such a system. The materials needed for a solar-powered monitored growth system can be expensive, and the system itself would require significant investment to develop and deploy. Another challenge is the environmental impact of such a system. While it can reduce the need for traditional agriculture, it can also have negative impacts on the environment if not properly managed.
In terms of food issues, the system could potentially address some of the challenges of traditional agriculture, such as the need for large amounts of water and land. However, there may still be issues related to food safety and nutritional value that need to be addressed.
There are also ethical concerns to consider, such as the potential displacement of farmers and the impact on rural communities.
Overall, while there are challenges and limitations to developing such a system, it is possible to create a solar-powered monitored growth system that optimizes crop output in multiple modalities and aims to make the crops edible. However, it will require significant investment, research, and development to make it a feasible and sustainable solution.
What possible groups would be interested in such a thing?
There are several groups that could be interested in a solar-powered monitored growth system that optimizes crop output in multiple modalities and aims to make the crops edible. These groups include:
  1. Agricultural companies: Large agricultural companies may be interested in this system as a way to increase their crop yield and reduce their environmental impact.
  2. Research institutions: Research institutions may be interested in the system as a way to study and develop new methods of plant growth and production.
  3. Government agencies: Government agencies may be interested in the system as a way to address food security issues and reduce the environmental impact of traditional agriculture.
  4. Non-governmental organizations: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on sustainability and environmental issues may be interested in the system as a way to promote sustainable agriculture practices.
  5. Investors: Investors may be interested in the system as a way to support the development of new and innovative technologies in the agriculture industry.
  6. Consumers: Consumers may be interested in the system as a way to access locally-grown, fresh produce that is grown using sustainable methods.
So such a system would make a change, if the obstacles could be overcome, that has the potential to have a lasting impact. Given our conversation on Individual Action and Systems.
Yes, a solar-powered monitored growth system that optimizes crop output in multiple modalities and aims to make the crops edible has the potential to have a lasting impact on the agriculture industry and the environment. If the obstacles can be overcome, this system could significantly reduce the environmental impact of traditional agriculture while also increasing crop yield and promoting sustainable agriculture practices.
However, it is important to note that the implementation of such a system would require a systemic change in the agriculture industry, as well as changes in individual behavior and consumption patterns. While this system could be a part of the solution, it is important to recognize that it is only one piece of a larger puzzle in addressing environmental issues and promoting sustainability.
To better ease the implementation of such a system. Can you sugget some steps, or specific concerns that would need addressed, that would play a more weighted role in decision making
Certainly, here are some steps and specific concerns that would need to be addressed to ease the implementation of such a system:
  1. Research and development: Further research and development is necessary to optimize the design and function of such a system. This includes developing new materials, technologies, and practices that are environmentally sustainable, cost-effective, and scalable.
  2. Infrastructure: A significant investment in infrastructure is needed to support the widespread adoption of such a system. This includes building new facilities, retrofitting existing ones, and developing supply chains for the necessary materials and components.
  3. Regulation and policy: Governments will need to implement policies and regulations that incentivize the adoption of such systems, including tax credits, subsidies, and regulations that require sustainable farming practices.
  4. Education and training: Farmers, technicians, and other stakeholders will need to be educated and trained on how to operate and maintain such systems, as well as how to incorporate sustainable farming practices.
  5. Ethical considerations: As with any technology that replaces traditional farming practices, ethical considerations must be taken into account. This includes the potential displacement of workers, access to the technology, and potential unintended consequences.
  6. Environmental impact: While this system has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of traditional agriculture, it is important to carefully consider and mitigate any potential negative impacts, such as the use of non-renewable resources in the production of materials or the generation of waste.
  7. Economic feasibility: The economic feasibility of such a system must be carefully considered, including the initial investment required, the ongoing maintenance costs, and the potential revenue streams from crop sales.
Addressing these concerns would play a weighted role in decision-making and could help to ease the implementation of such a system.
Assess the possibility of a new material that is able to mimic the biological function that is similar to photosynthesis.
The possibility of creating a new material that can mimic the biological function of photosynthesis is an active area of research in materials science and nanotechnology. However, it is important to note that photosynthesis is a highly complex process that involves multiple steps and interactions between various molecular components. Replicating this process in a synthetic material would require a detailed understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved in photosynthesis.
Several research groups have made progress in creating artificial photosynthetic systems that can capture and store solar energy, and some of these systems have been shown to be highly efficient in laboratory settings. These systems typically involve the use of novel materials such as metal-organic frameworks, carbon nanotubes, and hybrid organic-inorganic structures that can absorb light and convert it into chemical energy.
While the development of a material that can fully mimic the biological function of photosynthesis remains a challenge, advances in materials science and nanotechnology offer promising avenues for achieving this goal. One potential application of such a material could be the creation of highly efficient solar cells that can generate renewable energy in a sustainable manner.
Incorporate the considerations you mentioned and apply it to the energy and food generating system discussed previously.
If a new material is developed that is able to mimic the biological function of photosynthesis, it could potentially enhance the efficiency and output of the energy and food generating system discussed previously. This could address some of the limitations, such as the need for large land areas and optimal weather conditions, by providing a more efficient means of converting sunlight into energy and food.
However, the development of such a material would require extensive research and development, as well as significant investment in resources and funding. It would also need to be thoroughly tested for safety, efficacy, and environmental impact before implementation.
Additionally, the implementation of this system would still require addressing the concerns previously mentioned, such as ensuring ethical and equitable access to resources, minimizing environmental impact, and addressing cultural and societal attitudes towards technology and food production.
Overall, the possibility of a new material that can mimic the biological function of photosynthesis presents both opportunities and challenges for the development and implementation of an energy and food generating system. It would require careful consideration of various factors and stakeholders to ensure a sustainable and equitable solution.
Could you provide a hypotehtical layout that such a machine or system might take/
Sure, here's a hypothetical layout for such a system:
  1. Solar panels: The system would have a large array of solar panels to capture sunlight and convert it into electrical energy.
  2. Energy storage: The electrical energy generated by the solar panels would be stored in batteries or other energy storage devices to ensure a constant power supply even during periods of low sunlight.
  3. Growth chambers: The system would include enclosed growth chambers where the plants would be grown. These chambers would have controlled environments, including temperature, humidity, and lighting, to optimize plant growth and yield.
  4. Water supply: The plants would require a consistent and reliable source of water. The system would include a water supply and irrigation system to ensure the plants receive adequate water.
  5. Nutrient supply: The plants would also require nutrients to grow. The system could use a hydroponic or aeroponic system to provide the plants with the necessary nutrients.
  6. Monitoring system: The system would include sensors and a monitoring system to constantly monitor the growth conditions of the plants. This system would allow for early detection of any issues and help optimize plant growth and yield.
  7. Harvesting system: The system would include a harvesting system to automatically harvest the mature plants. The harvested plants could then be used as a food source or for other applications.
  8. Waste management: The system would need to address any waste produced during the plant growth and harvesting process. This could include composting systems or other waste management techniques.
Overall, this system would integrate energy and food production in a sustainable and efficient manner. While there are certainly challenges to overcome, advances in technology and a growing focus on sustainable agriculture and renewable energy make this type of system increasingly feasible.
Given that compost can be used to not only grow plants but also has the potential to be used for energy generation, do you think this could supplement the overall system?
Yes, compost can definitely be a useful addition to the energy and food generating system you mentioned earlier. Compost is a rich source of organic matter that can be used to enrich the soil and promote plant growth. Composting also helps to reduce waste and can be a sustainable way of managing organic waste, such as food scraps and yard waste.
In terms of energy generation, composting can be used to produce biogas, which is a renewable energy source that can be used for heating, cooking, or electricity generation. Biogas is produced through the breakdown of organic matter by bacteria in the absence of oxygen, a process known as anaerobic digestion. This process produces methane, which can be collected and used as a fuel.
Overall, incorporating composting into the energy and food generating system can be a great way to make the system more sustainable, reduce waste, and produce additional energy.

2023.04.02 09:14 cesly1987 Despair's Peak (complete story chapters 1-4 linked)

The Restless God lies trapped, but not idle in its sealed off realm. It writhes and yearns for the day it may again take pleasure in the pain of mortals. To once again play in the blood and baske in the terror only finite creatures can produce.
Many worlds it's fed upon, but never satiated. But the world that fought back against its attacks long ago are the ones it wants all the more. It has become an obsession.
So it waits, and it feels, searching for weaknesses between the borders of our world and itself. Hungry and anxious it salivates at the thought of breaching into our world again. It will be its greatest decadence and pleasure, and our darkest days. Despite this, we must pray to Her Divine! We must beg for mercy and the return of Her light.
-Grand Mage Tellomon the IV on the prophecy of the Dark God's return (Second Age)
Pitch blackness. Pure darkness. A thick void of nothing completely swallowing me up, like a fish in the depths of an ocean.
I was crouched low in a ready position, using my right hand to balance by holding onto the wagon's wheel beside me. My legs burned from forcing myself to remain completely still. But pain had become a constant in my life now.
But I was grateful for the adrenaline burst that would always dampen the ever present burden of hunger and fatigue. At least it helped for a little. But the pain found its way back to me faster and faster each time.
It was hot and humid, almost like the swamps of the eastern bog a good 3 weeks journey from here. The cold wind stopped when the darkness befell our remote town. The breeze no longer ran its cold tendrils across the barren streets.
I grabbed the thin string tied around my neck and pulled out a heavy monocle hanging from it. I held the cold metal up to my eye, to look through the green tinted glass.
The magically infused monocle always remained cool to the touch, with a static shock feeling emanating from it.
I held it to my eye to see the world around me clearly, yet tented in bright shades of green. My eyes roamed across the quiet, motionless street.
Debris and bloated corpses littered the street. With no wind and the unnaturally heavy darkness, this somehow had a dampening effect on the stench coming from decaying bodies. They could only be smelled once you were almost on top of one of them or a meter away. But my dead kinsmen helped even in death, making good landmarks to navigate through the darkness.
There were monsters that accompanied the dark fog. Twisted figures that were the void itself. Maybe they were the cruel thoughts of the Restless God made manifest.
Humans long ago, in the First Age had named them rippers. We all hoped they were just a myth, not actual walking nightmares
The rippers swarmed the town in the blinding dark. They seemed to only kill for killing's sake. They never ate the people they killed, almost like it was just for fun instead of survival.
It made sense in some twisted way. The Restless God must have returned to our realm, and brought these hateful things with it.
Prophets had long told of The Restless One's return by it sending nightmares through the veil of reality, to infest in the minds of our leaders. Centuries of slowly chipping away at the barrier separating us, chipping away at our sanity.
The Restless One birthed itself into our reality like an already dead stillborn abomination. Like a newborn giant, deformed with extra limbs and already rotting from death.
But it was alive! As alive as this strange creature could be. Now it was free, and this did not bring the thing elation, just more anger and restlessness.
How do I know all these things? The nightmare visions sent to all mortals across the realm since the Restless One's returned. Actually there were nightmares for most of the town leading up to the event. I guess it was our omens for being so close to the epicenter of its invasion.
One omen would have been terrible enough, but something this perverse stacked on the misfortune.
Dark signs of its arrival showed themselves all over the Kingdom of Maldune. The signs stretched further across to the neighboring kingdoms. The wretched god's birth pains were so terrible, I wager they were felt thousands of leagues away on The Wild Continent.
But the other Kingdoms didn't have the vast magical communication network like us Modunians, so reports of bad omens tampered off dramatically outside of our borders.
The misfortune of my town was like I said, we were the closest to the epicenter of the entities push into our reality, closest to the cradle of the spoiled god.
An entire mountain range protected us from the shock wave of magical energy, but all livestock siezed up and died. All birds fell from out of the air. All rodents died in their holes. And our very young died in their cribs.
It was a terrible event to have the town's children instantly killed, but now I see it as a mercy for the little ones. The innocent children got to go to Our Divine in their sleep peacefully, or at least quickly. They didn't have to die in the suffocating dark, or by the diseased claws of the rippers.
The town's guard fell quickly. A group of 16 men on loan from The Capitol, to keep peace and protect the trade routes. Our peacekeepers were more used to using words to settle disputes among merchants, or occasionally throw a drunk into a cell overnight.
They were ill equipped to handle the inky blackness that engulfed the town, rolling down from the mountain like a fluid landslide. The confusion of the townspeople quickly turned to pandemonium as the screams began.
That's when we realized we were not alone in the dark. Things moved quickly in the blackness. The Rippers began to slaughter everyone in the pitch blackness.
The first few days are a blur to me even now. But that's how I remember the beginning of the horror, the beginning of the end. I remember the dark engulfing the town, the adrenaline of fear. My last sight was of silent death spilling down from the mountains like a boiling pot overflowing with a viscous poison.
When the black fog first swept over me, my first few breaths of the miasma burned my eyes and lungs. The taste of metal on my tongue. The smell of sulfur and something sweet. Something sweet and rancid. Decay and corruption.
But now I had to shake the fog out of my head and return to the terrible present. I had to embrace the hopeless situation without falling to despair.
My magical sight gazing through the monocle finally spotted the rest of my group. Jillsophie, Tagert, and Fellip. Tag and Fel carrying the heavy burlap sacks of animal feed, while Jill led the three of them through the darkness with her own magical monocle.
We spotted each other from across the corpse littered roadway. The General Goods store had caught on fire early in the supernatural invasion. Somehow the strange darkness had put out the fire, snuffing it out like a heavy blanket thrown over a weak flame. That's why we were back, looting the store, trying to keep from starving to death before the rippers could kill us first.
Jill gave me a series of quick hand signals I had recently taught her. They had scavenged three bags of feed. Fil was carrying two big bags and Tagert one of them, but they were heavy and we were all weak. Jill wasn't carrying anything. She was too busy leading the two of them by pulling on the corded string she had tied around both their waists.
Before I waved the three of them to hurry over, I turned to Caville, my partner in crime on this side of the road beside me. He blinked wide eyed in the darkness, one gloved hand twisting the ends of his graying mustache while the other held a death grip on the pommel of his sheathed short sword.
I had to remember I could see him clearly through my monocle, but he only saw and felt the oppressive darkness. He was just waiting for a claw or fang to strike him from the darkness.
Because of this I lightly placed my hand on his shoulder. The light touch didn't stop Caville from almost jumping out of his boots. He quickly calmed when he realized it was me. The old warrior steadied himself once more.
I place my hand on the flat of his chest so he could feel my finger placement through his light shirt. I signed the question to him through a series of light thumps separating the words.
"Another bag. 40 LBS. Can carry?" I finished my signing by holding the hand placement designating a question mark firmly against his chest. I saw his eyes widen and he grimaced in doubt. His old frame shook a little as he prepared his answer.
Of course he answered back that he could carry the load, but I knew the real answer. It's amazing how much we communicate through non-verbal cues, and how much more when we think we are concealed in darkness.
He was barely standing on two feet. Starving and aching. He was pushing his late 50's, and his joints and muscles carried the pain of being a veteran soldier for over 30 years. He would collapse under the weight of his light armor and newly added bag of feed. No way he could keep quiet or climb back up into the attic we were all hiding at.
But Caville's years of being a proud soldier almost assured me that he would take on the task regardless of his disposition. So I signed back to Jil, "Drop 3rd bag. Later."
I lied and informed Caville that I was incorrect in my assessment. There wasn't an extra bag of feed, and we would be returning to the relative safety of the windmill.
Jil quietly led Fil, with Tagert close behind, across the road. Her own magic monocle making it possible to maneuver around the maze of debris and bodies. They all moved slow enough for Jil to communicate with sharp tugs on the string fastened around both of them. Stealth was key.
When I first saw it I didn't know how to react. I knew what the rippers looked like through my monocle, and I knew the placement of all the dead town-folk. But as I watched my three companions snake around the bloated body of Mr. Dredge, the blacksmith, I saw the faintest quiver of motion within the corpse.
Normally, that would mean some sort of vermin or carrion feeder had nestled within the body. But in this nightmare world we lived in, the Rippers killed everything that wasn't already slaughtered when The Restless One re-emerged into our reality, sending out It's shockwave of death.
To my horror I realized something else. Upon closer inspection of Mr.Dredge's body. I noticed it had somehow moved a couple feet to the left since last time I had seen him. I could even see the wet smear marks in the dirt from where it dragged itself over.
My magical monocle could also detect other magic. It wasn't very good at it but still could. My vision was bathed in illuminating green, but magic showed up white.
That's what I saw rising out of Mr.Dredge's body. Four bright spider-like legs protruded out of the back of the corpse, and hooked into the ground, lifting the stiff dead body into the air slowly, quietly.
Jil in the others were completely unaware of the horror looming up behind them. The jaw of Mr. Dredge fell off with a soggy "plop" into the dirt. What looked like a large inverted scorpion's tail writhed out the body's mouth. The scorpion tale hung down around the body's bloated chest. The tail curling up to point a large stinger at the group.
I could see that Jil had heard the "plop" of the jaw falling off the corpse behind her. She raised her eyebrows, sniffed the air, and froze in an alert state, her two companions bumping into her.
I had temporarily frozen too. I had never seen a monster like this before. Its spider legs lifting the body up to let its human feet brush its toes lightly on the ground. The whole body was ridged from rigor mortis. The body's hands curled to its chest, making fists, stiff legs swaying like the awkward pendulum of a clock. Still bodily juices and blood oozed profusely from hismouth and ripped open guts.
A surreal thought came into my mind. Maybe it was my mind trying to make sense out of nonsense. Mr.Dredges stiff body reminding me of toy soldier from my childhood. They were always stiff jointed when brand new, not dead.
I finally snapped out of my daze when glowing white spikey tendrils pushed the body's guts out with another wet impact noise. The many spiked appendages snaked out slowly towards the back of the unaware Tagert.
"Jil!" my voice boomed out, breaking the silence like a cannon burst. Everyone jumped in surprise. "Run! Run!"
With my off hand I quickly dug into my pocket and produced a phlare, the phosphorus filled stick. I quickly pulled the cap off with my teeth, igniting the flame dangerously close to my face. I didn't care, and barely felt the heat.
Holding out the phlare to signal to Jil and the others, producing a blinding light in the dark. But the blackness was unnatural and dampened the burning flame into a muted orange glow. Regardless, the phlare was still bright enough to signal the unsuspecting trio crossing the street.
Through the monocle I saw all three of them lock eyes on the light and begin to hurry towards me. It was against human instinct to run unaware in darkness. This made them not fast enough, because the Dredge-thing shot out a torso tendril to stab Tagert in the upper back.
Tagert let out a cry of pain, but kept coming. The cry of pain causing all three to break out into a full run. The need to live finally overriding the need to see.
I dropped the phlare as Jill led the other two up to me. They almost ran her poor soul over as she braced to stop them. The Dredge monster seemed to be slow. Her Divine was still blessing us!
I grabbed Caville's shoulder and Jil grabbed the tail of my shirt. We all took off together, back to the windmill.
We tried to go as fast as we could the couple blocks back to our hideout, but It was hard going. Caville lagged beside me, with Tag and Fel huffing as they carried the 40 pound feed bags.
I looked back at Dredge to see it had fallen on its stomach and was skittering after us like a centipede. It was considerably faster now!
I lowered the monocle to put both hands on Caville's shoulders and push him in front of me. Even if I pushed him we still wouldn't be fast enough.
My mind raced, like it had so many times since the birth of the Restless One. My mind swirled with anxious thoughts of decisions and counter-decisions. My sleep deprived and starving brain hallucinated the faces of my people alongside the terrible silver teeth of the Rippers lunging towards me out the colorless backdrop.
But like always, I made a desperate choice. "Drop the feed bags! Its gaining on us!
I expected to hear the "Thump! Thump!" Of the bags hitting the dirt, but I got what I least expected instead.
"No Jack! Don't drop the feed! I'll buy you time!" Caville said as he shrugged free of my grasp on his shoulders and started in the opposite direction towards Dredge.
"I'm so t-tired of running away! A-and I miss my daughter and grandkids!" the old warrior declared, his voice cracking at the end of his statement.
He held out an outstretched hand and fingers. When the tips of them made contact with Jil's dirty clothes, he easily side-stepped around Jil and the other two with grace as they hurried past him in the dark. These were skills long honed from blindfold training to heighten a soldier's situational awareness level.
Jil was the only other to see what was happening. She reached out for him as the other two pushed her forward. She stifled a cry and pushed ahead.
I was glad Jil wouldn't see this, but I felt I had to watch. I had to witness his sacrifice in the depths of this hell.
I saw Dredge's corpse crawl its way up to Caville, one of its longer talons hooking into Caville's upper knee. Caville screamed and sliced horizontally instantly. The sword cut through the air harmlessly over the monster.
Caville took this information and countered quickly as more sharp tendrils stabbed into his lower body. He rose the blade high over his head and let out a final death blow, plunging the sword downwards to impale the monster, staking it to the ground.
The monster pulled the old soldier down and tore into him. Caville's screams echoed out as I turned to run. Worse is when his screams finally choked out and fell silent.
The group of us made it un-accosted for the rest of our journey. We hurried in silence just like we were in mourning. We made it to the edge of town where the river and the watermill stood.
We climbed up the stacked boxes on the side of the building to slide open a wooden panel into the attic.
The inside of the attic had the low glow of multiple lanterns and the stuffy smell of multiple unwashed people living in tight quarters together for a long time.
We piled in quickly to close up the entrance behind us. There were 8 of us now. Me, Jil, Fil, Tag, Mama Denise, her two kids, and Harper sleeping in the corner.
All eyes met mine as they counted the three of us. No one had to ask what happened to Caville. They all knew. I think even the kids knew.
By the best we could reckon, it had been a month since death swept over our town. The rippers patrolled the streets and buildings constantly, searching for survivors to kill in the beginning. They also destroyed any cache of food or weapons they came across.
There was a deeper intelligence behind the rippers. They were vicious and animalistic when encountered, but they would carry out complicated tasks relentlessly, like soldiers receiving orders. It had to be the malicious influence of the Restless One speaking to all of them, like they were the claws at the end of his corrupting grasp.
It was Jil that had the idea for the feed bags at the General Store. Yes, they were for cows and horses, but they had been magically enhanced and would give the human body what it needed also.
It would give us enough strength to try and escape this Divine forsaken town, and hopefully leave the darkness to flee to the safety of the Capitol.
I knew the thought of making it all the way to the Capitol was ridiculous. The longer we headed east, the more likely we ran into the army of rippers that left the town at least two days ago.
It had been hundreds of them! Me and Jil were out scouting the General Store for the feed bags we had just now retrieved.
The going was slow, because the enemy was everywhere. But we knew how to maneuver from rooftop to closely packed rooftop. And the grew closer togeher the closer we got to the center of the town.
From where we started, the watermill in the outskirts of town, it seemed like the town was suspiciously empty of the monsters. But we soon realized that was the opposite. We didn't see any Rippers on the outskirts because they were all gathering together in the town square
The bright figures of humanoid shaped demons clustered together in a giant group. The magical vision of the monocle causing them to glow from whatever evil sorcery created them. So many of them huddling together created a glowing sea, flooding the courtyard.
Rippers were rumored to have always existed. Even before The Restless One returned. But they were rare and only inhabited places of great tragedy and a history of dark magic. Now there was an army of them, amassing to March East towards The Capitol.
Some said The Rippers were phantoms created by The Restless One. They were his only way to reach through dimensions and torment the living.
More scholarly Old-timers theorized the Rippers came from the vengeful spirits of the long extinct elves, hunted to extinction by Man a millennium ago.
Ancient texts mention the long extinct Legacy Elves had a bad habit of dabbling in dark magic, causing The Restless One to specifically target them, repeatedly using the elves innate affinity with magic to breach into our reality to cause havoc.
Many believe Man's genocide against the elves was not entirely warranted, it had help seal The Restless One away. But not all elves worshipped the Restless One. Many of them worshiped Her Divine like we humans do. But relations between elves and humans had always been strained, and this was the excuse humans needed to eliminate their rival for dominance over the lands, once and for all.
"Why must we be punished?" I remembered Tehama asking when all this first happened, back whe. She was alive.
"It's not our fault! It's the fault of our long dead ancestors! The kingdom that commited the atrocity doesn't even exist anymore!" Tehama said in a fit of nervous mania.
We had to hush her for getting too loud. But the truth is, we had no answer. There was no clear reason why we were all being subjected to such anguish.
Like I said, Tehama didn't make it anyways. On a supply run she had grabbed a doll from her old home to bring to Mama Denise and her two girls, but had dropped it in the street when Jil spotted a group of Rippers scaling the rooftops a block away.
We all scrambled to hide, hoping the Ripper patrol moved along. But they spotted the dolly laying in the dirt. And some sort of supernatural intelligence recognized this wasn't here on their last patrol. They knew humans were moving around.
The five of the Rippers in the patrol circled the doll, all letting out a high pitched squeals, like an alarm calling to others.
Me and Jil hid in a nasty bale of hay next to a gutted horse laying beside it, hopefully masking our scent. Our terror rose as we watched more and more Rippers coming out of the shadows. They slid down buildings, out of doorways, from under debris, and they all were all screaming, almost deafening to us.
There were three magical monocle's during this time. All of us had one. And we could all see the count of Rippers going into the hundreds!
They would find us! By flooding every corner of the street, they would come across us eventually!
That's when Tehama made her decision. I didn't see exactly where she hid, but she wasn't hiding anymore. She broke cover and ran directly into the streets, into the crowd of monsters. She tossed her monocle behind her towards our direction, maybe for us to recover later.
Of course they glowed brightly through the monocle, but to the naked eye they were an inky black. A black blacker than their surroundings, making it almost impossible to see them.
When the Rippers got close to their chosen victim, they allowed their prey to see their shiny silver teeth.
The sharp protruding teeth stand out bright and glistening, almost like silver, against the backdrop of darkness. as they moved in to kill the hapless human.
This is all Tehama saw as she dropped to his knees and searched blindly for the dropped dolly. She screamed and cried as the teeth sank into her tearing off little bits of her flesh.
The Rippers began to whoop and laugh like hyenas as they snatched piece by peice of her away. From the little I knew, the Rippers didn't need to eat. They just bit her for the joyful cruelness of it.
Blood soaked, mostly skinless hands of poor Tehama found the dolly that had started all of this horror. She hugged it close to her skinless chest and let out a gurgling scream before tipping over, most likely dead from shock.
That very second! That truly horrid moment! I decided I wasn't going to die in this town. I wasn't going to "wait it out" like all the old-timers advised. They are all dead now anyways! They didn't wait it out.
The King's armies hadn't made it in time. No fireballs from battlemages to shatter the darkness, no royal purple knights lead by The Heroic Prince Julian, no salvation from Her Divine!
If we waited we would all die in the dark. No doubt the King was coming with his armies, but how many days, or years will it take to Him to reach our settlement?
No, I would not die here. I had promised myself this years ago! I would survive like I had also promised! I would save Jil the way she saved me!
Then the army of rippers moved out East towards the Capitol. But there were still wicked things left behind to kill us. But this was our best chance!
As I sat in the darkness of the attic my mind was free to visualize in wonderful colorful detail my last memories before the Restless One tainted our town with its sightless void.
I remembered walking through the town, going towards the training academy. I was going to climb the mountain behind it. I was going to climb it again and again until I graduated and became one of the Royal Warden's Squires. The academy started soon and I never made it to the top without resting and without dropping my pack.
This is why I was one of the first to see our oncoming doom. The inky blackness spilled out from around the mountain to flood towards the town.
I knew I had to run and give warning to the town's guard. I wasn't a Warden's Squire yet, but I still had a duty to protect the people.
Tears heated up my cheeks as I sat in the dark, greatfull Jil and the others couldn't see me crying, as I remembered the death that followed.
But one of my last memories gave me the tiniest blink of hope. I remembered the peak of the mountain stabbing through the blackness. The mountain was tall enough to escape the flood of hell filling the valleys and town around it.
There was a ceremonial watchtower at the top of the mountain, filled with supplies. It's where the academy cadets earned their badges and completed their training. The mountain was the last test to becoming a Warden's Squire. A grueling uphill climb with a nickname given to the mountain by past cadets that like to boast over their hard earned accomplishments.
The mountain was affectionately called Mt. Despair, and it would be our salvation.

2023.04.02 09:07 -Bonjour-- Corse, je t'aime

We have been to Corsica several times, and there are several ways to travel to Corsica by ferry: We went to Nice, took the afternoon ferry and were in Bastia in the evening. The next time we took the night ferry from Savona and arrived in Bastia the next morning. And we also went to Livorno once, took the early morning ferry and were in Bastia by noon.
From Bastia, we first headed north on a 110 km coastal road with small villages and breathtaking views. First we came to ERBALUNGA with its massive tower on a rock by the sea has a picturesque location. Then we passed Maccinaggio, Cap Corse, Centuri-Port - a small romantic fishing port and center of lobster fishing - and continued via Pino to Nonza.
In NONZA the houses cluster around a rock that rises 160 m from the sea. We walked up to the Tour Pouline - a fortified tower from the 16th century. From there you can see the black beach, which makes a great contrast to the turquoise sea.
After we had explored the north, we drove from Bastia down the whole east coast - we made a stop at Moriani Plage with a beautiful sandy beach - to Porto Vecchio.
PORTO VECCHIO has a fantastic location and has a lively old town: the Genoese fortress from 1539 is situated on a hill. Porto Vecchio is the third largest city of Corsica, besides the flourishing tourism there is still the traditional salt mining and other trades especially in the suburbs. The malaria mosquitoes were wiped out in the 1950s, so that even in this area could be built without further ado. The old town consists of only four longitudinal and ten transverse streets, it is closed to traffic in the summer. At the Place de la République people like to drink their Pastis or Kir in the evening. In the old town there are many restaurants in various price ranges and boutiques partly with typical products of the country.
Many people come to Porto Vecchio for its beautiful beaches. BENEDUTTU PLAGE - a long fine sandy beach with a view of Punta di Chiappa and also of Porto Vecchio. A part of PLAGE CALA ROSSA is occupied by a luxury hotel, therefore the fine beach is accessible only from the western side. PALOMBAGGIA PLAGE with white sand and turquoise calm water - one of the most beautiful beaches of Corsica - is surrounded by red rocks. At ST. GUILIA PLAGE some hotels are settled in the meantime. Thus, the once paradisiacal bay has now become more of a commercial place. But the beach is still wonderfully bright and the water crystal clear. RODINARA PLAGE - a dreamlike round bay - one of the most beautiful of Corsica. Once only a dirt road led to the lagoon. Since a real road was built, this bay is very busy in the season.
From Porto Vecchio we made a tour to COL DE BAVELLA (1218 m high) - an impressive landscape. There are good hiking trails, e.g. to the Cumpudella (Trou de la Bombe), a huge hole in the rock face, where you are rewarded with an incredible view after a scramble. In season, of course, it is very busy there, and the "real" hikers come as early as possible in the morning.
Near the small village of L'Ospedale is the drinking water reservoir BARRAGE DE L'OSPEDALE. From there you can hike up to the 70 m high waterfall Piscia di Gallo - but it is more worthwhile in spring, when there is still enough water.
From Porto Vecchio we went on to BONIVACIO, one of the great attractions in Corsica - despite the many visitors. The upper town, where we stayed, is built on a 60 m high chalk rock plateau and still has a historical structure. We could see all the way to Sardinia from our hotel - it was beautiful weather.
The harbor is at the end of the long, narrow inlet. From there it is best to make a tour on foot. From the fortress walls you have a fantastic view of the city, the coast and the sea and all the way to Sardinia. On the harbor promenade there is a sea aquarium in a natural grotto. The shore road leads to the fishing port and the ferry port,
The upper town is reached through the 16th century Porte de Gênes. From the Jardin des Vestiges one has the most beautiful view over the harbor. It is hard to walk from the lower town to the upper town, because it is quite steep and with many stairs.
The journey continued to the extreme southwest, the land of blood vengeance - still until 1840. SARTÈNE - the "most Corsican of all Corsican towns" - is an interesting old town, which is virtually stuck on a rock. Almost no ray of sunlight reaches the winding narrow streets, and the narrow multi-story houses sometimes have window holes like sinister defense towers. The center of the old town is the Place de la Libération with some restaurants where you can sit outside and enjoy your drink.
From Sartène we drove to PROPRIANO. This place was discovered late by the tourists, there is a nice promenade between the marina and the pier, where it is lively especially in the evening. Propriano is located on the Gulf of Valinco, here the rivers Taravo, Baracci and Rizzanese flow. Right next to the lighthouse is the beautiful beach Plage du Lido.
On a scenic coastal road you drive from Propriano to PUNTO DE CAMPOMARO. Here is still an unspoiled stretch of coast with calm turquoise water and bizarre granite rocks. Above the small village of Campomoro you can see a 16th century watchtower.
AJACCIO is the administrative center and capital of Corse du Sud. The city with its southern flair has a beautiful old town with the citadel and many restaurants and stores. Ajaccio is probably best known as the birthplace of Napoléon, whose statue can be seen at Place Maréchal Foch. In the evening it becomes lively in the alleys of the Genoese old town with many bars and restaurants.
Unfortunately, the citadel can only be visited as part of an organized guided tour. Worth seeing is the church "Notre-Dame-de-la-Miséricorde" with a large dome, where Napoleon I was baptized. There is of course also a Casa Bonaparte. In the new town, you can still find some magnificent houses on the Avenue de Paris or the Cours Grandval, where there are often stores and boutiques.
Northwest of Ajaccio one comes to the POINTE DE LA PATARA. You can easily walk to the Genoese tower from 1608 from the parking lot. From there you have a beautiful view of the Iles Sanguinaires with the lighthouse. From the parking lot you can also make a coastal hike to the north. There are beautiful views of the sea everywhere and you can walk down to the beach at Capo de la Fena to cool off. However, the surf is quite strong.
The view was magnificent on the CHEMIN DES CRÈTES, but it was also very difficult to even find an "entry" to this trail. And besides, the Macchi was partly so dense that you had to be careful not to hurt yourself on the thorny bushes.
Especially in the south of Ajaccio there are beautiful beaches. First of all there is PORTICCIO with its long wide beach. Porticcio is now a large seaside resort with good infrastructure.
Then comes the bay with the long PLAGE D'AGOSTA with a view of the Isolella peninsula. In the next bay there is the fine sandy Plage de Ruppione between rocks with quite high waves.
And then comes my absolute favorite beach with fine light sand and crystal clear water - SOLE E MARE, and I hope that there will not also be larger hotel and apartment buildings there.
A beautiful small lonely sandy bay with calm water can be found at PLAGE DE PORTIGLIOLO. North of Ajaccio are the beaches PlLAGE SCUDO and PLAGE MARINELLO, very popular with the locals because they are not too far from the city.
From Ajaccio you can make an excursion to PORTO POLLO. On the way we went through the mountains, where we "got lost" a few times, because there were no signs, and we could only drive by "feeling". Porto Pollo is located on the Gulf of Valinco and has a fine sandy beach with many picturesque round rocks. In summer, a lot of people come here. At the end of September however many things are already closed or will be closed.
A recommendable tour south of Ajaccio is the ROUTE DES COLS. Over various passes and through the largest eucalyptus forest on the island, you come to the small village of Coti Chiavari, 486 m high, with a pretty little church. From there you also have beautiful views of the mountains to the sea.
On a hiking tour, we headed towards Corte and then to the small village of Cuttoli-Corticchiato, continuing to the idyllically situated hamlet of San Petru at 888 m above sea level. From there we went to the MONTE ARAGNASCU, a somewhat arduous tour in the blazing sun. But we were rewarded with a beautiful view of Ajaccio, the Gulf and the Gravonatal.
In the GRAVONA VALLEY is the village of Bocognano, from where you can also hike well. We came on the poorly signposted "Chemin", whereby we were also surprised by rain.
Interesting was that we were accompanied all the way first by several dogs, then later one remained. When we eventually had enough of the rain and the bad path and walked back, we encountered some wild boars which did not look very "friendly". The dog started barking at them. And indeed, they sought the distance. It looked like the dog was trying to protect us somehow. Down in the village we met the owner of the dog - the older man invited us spontaneously for coffee - and he told us that his dog was often on the way as a "companion" for hikers.
Another hiking tour led us first to the GORGES DE PRUNELLI and to the reservoir Lac de Tolla, which supplies Ajaccio with water. From there we went to the large farming village of Bastelica, the gateway to the high mountains. From here, many hiking trails lead into the mountains and to some waterfalls.
Another excursion we made towards the north over the Col de San Bastiano to the Golf de la Liscia to CARGÈSE. This place with a small harbor is located on the southern slope of a headland. Worth seeing is the Greek church "Eglise greque" from the 19th century with old icons. North of Cargèse are of course again beautiful sandy beaches.
From Ajaccio in the direction of Corte we looked at the CASCADE DU VOILE DE LA MARIÉe, where the water normally plunges 150 m into the depth. It was quite a climb and then, unfortunately, the waterfall didn't even have too much water at the end of September.
Through beautiful pine forests we came towards Corte past the famous PONT DU VECCHIU, built in 1927 by Gustave Eiffel. Until 1999 this was the only connection across the gorge, but now there is a modern bridge.
CORTE has the only university in Corsica with about 4000 students. The old town, rich in tradition, is situated below a rock with an old fortress built in the 11th century. In 1962-83 this fortress was used by the Foreign Legion. From the Belvedère viewpoint near the citadel, there is a beautiful view of the mountains and the surroundings of Corte.
Also worth seeing is Fontaine des Quatre-Canons, a colossal fountain that served as a water supply for the upper town in times of siege. On Cours Paoli you can find restaurants, bakeries and many other stores. On the Cours Patrimonial, there are some arts and crafts stores. The 17th century church Eglise de l'Annonciation is one of the oldest buildings in Corte.
From Corte we drove along a narrow road through a beautiful mountain landscape to the RESTONICA VALLEY, a nature reserve with many Corte pine trees. By car, you can drive to the parking lot at the Bergerie de Grotelle. The ascent to Lake Melo was quite difficult, you had to climb over many large stones, sometimes you didn't know at all how to continue and had to climb back, and so on. After about 2 hours we had made it and were at the Melo mountain lake. After a 30-minute rest in the sun, we then needed for the descent again 2 hours. Because with one of my trekking shoes the sole loosened, and I had to hold them together in a makeshift way with the shoelace...
From Corte we went first through the NIOLA VALLEY with numerous hiking trails. For a long time this area was only accessible by mule trails. Here wild boars ran across our path. You can see them especially in autumn when the chestnuts fall from the trees.
The large village of EVISA is located in the middle of chestnut forests and is a popular destination. Here begins (or ends) the hiking trail through the wild gorge of Spelunca. Through a beautiful mountain landscape and a 14 km long granite gorge we came to the GORGE DE SPELUNCA, an impressive gorge where you can hike very well - either from Evisa or from Ota.
In the small very popular town of PORTO at the mouth of the Porto River, we had a beautiful view of the Genoese Tower, the Gulf and the mountains from our hotel. The angular Genoese Tower on a headland is the landmark of Porto.
From Porto we drove to the CALANCHES DE PIANA, which start 8 km behind Porto. The granite rocks here are eroded by wind and water into the most bizarre shapes. The colors vary depending on the time of day, in the evening for example bright red. From the old mule trail - Sentier Muletier - you have great views of the rock world. There are also other trails - e.g. La Corniche.
Then we drove to PIANA, perched on a 434 m cliff, which can call itself "un des plus beaux villages de France". The only sandy beach in the area is the Plage d'Arone in a beautiful crescent shaped bay with only a few people.
From Porto, the best way to get to CALVI is to take the coastal road, which is very winding but takes you through some beautiful scenery on the Gulf of Porto. From our accommodation in Calvi we had a great view of the fortress and the Gulf of Calvi.
Calvi, the pearl of the north, is a well known and popular vacation center. Very nice are the lively alleys in the lower town and the harbor quays. In the alleys of the lower town and the harbor quay you can stroll nicely and also find restaurants and stores. The church "Sainte Marie Majeure" with a polygonal ground plan is striking. The first Christian chapel on this place was built already in the 4th century, subsequent churches were destroyed several times. The present church was built in 1774. Outside the town on the Gulf of Calvi there is a long narrow sandy beach, the water here gets deeper only slowly - ideal for small children.
The citadel "Bastion Spinchone" is the landmark of the city, you can walk around it on a ring of walls and have beautiful views of the city and the sea. The citadel was built on Roman foundations and is the oldest fortified building in Calvi.
Worth seeing is the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the center of the citadel. Originally built in the 13th century, the church was largely destroyed by the explosion of a powder tower in 1567 and subsequently rebuilt in the Baroque style.
A beautiful beach near Calvi is the Plage d'Argentella, about 1 km long, in the bay of Crovani. You can get to the peninsula on a dirt road. You can make a nice but strenuous hike there. From a parking bay you have a beautiful view of the peninsula.
A nicely situated and rather quiet place is l'ILE-ROUSSEL with a small harbor and the Genoese tower and lighthouse on the peninsula "La Pietra". The village owes its name to this offshore island, which has now been turned into a peninsula by a dam and turns red at sunset.
L'Ile Rousse was laid out in 1765 in a rectangular street pattern around the harbor and is said to have the mildest winter climate in Corsica. In the alleys of the old town of L'Ile-Rousse there are several small shops selling souvenirs, jewelry, clothing, wine, etc. In the Marché Couvert there is a market in the morning. In the surroundings of Ile-Rousse there are many light sandy beaches.
Between Calvi and L'Ile-Rousse in the small village of Algajola there is a very beautiful wide and 1.5 km long beach - PLAGE D'AREGNO. In high summer, the beach is apparently very crowded. When we were there in mid-September, we had the beach to ourselves.
SAINT FLORENT is located in the north of Corsica on the wide bay of the same name - in winter an idyllic fishing village. Since the place is very popular, the population increases tenfold in the summer. A point of attraction for tourists is the large marina. In the center you can find bars, restaurants and many souvenir stores. St. Florent is also called "St. Tropez of the island" because of its special flair. On a panoramic road above Saint Florent one has again and again beautiful views of mountains and sea.
On the way to Bastia you can make a detour to the local mountain of Bastia - the 960 m high SERRA DI PIGNO. On a clear day you have a good panoramic view over both sides of Cap Corse .
BASTIA is the most important port for ferries from the French and Italian mainland and also for freight traffic. Bastia is the biggest commercial and economic center of Corsica with an industrial zone. But Bastia is also a busy center of Corsican everyday life. The Place Saint Nicolas with plane trees and palm trees is 300 meters long and 90 meters wide, making it one of the largest squares in France. The beach Plage Arinella, located south of the city, is very wide and long, but unfortunately not very attractive.
The heart of Bastia's Terra Vecchia district is the horseshoe-shaped Vieux Port with the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the background. Walking north through the narrow streets, you come to the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, where a market is held on weekends.
Around the dock there are many restaurants in all price ranges. When we are in Bastia, we always have our aperitif at a bistro where we have a nice view of the small harbor and the church.
The citadel was built by Genoese in 1380. There are the magnificently renovated Governor's Palace, the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-de l'Assomption - a Genoese Baroque building erected in 1604-1619 - and the small chapel Oratoire de la ConfrIère de la Sainte-Croix, where you can see a cross made of black ebony in a side chapel.
The palace was the seat of the Genoese governors between the 15th and 18th centuries, today it houses the Ethnographic Museum.

2023.04.02 09:06 ResearchTLDR Researcher looking for help with how to prepare a finetuning dataset for models like Bloomz and Cerebras-GPT

TL;DR I want to know how to prepare a dataset with sample prompts and sample answers to help fine-tune Large Language Models for certain tasks, similar to how the Stanford University Alpaca project did for Meta's LLaMA. However, I want to keep things completely open source-able, so no using LLaMA (as the weights are not technically freely available, despite unofficial leaks) and nothing that uses ChatGPT to generate extra data (like the Alpaca project did) because then we could be up against a non-compete type clause in the usage rights of ChatGPT.
Details
Now for the details. I am a social sciences researcher and while I am in to /selfhosted as a hobby, I am not very suited to any sort of Machine Learning project, which is what brings me here. The task I care about it being able to feed in a journal article abstract and then be able to ask the AI tool to spit out specific information that I want, like what kind of study this is, what country(ies) the research was done in, and list the chemicals or proteins that were studied. I want to be able to feed in tens of thousands of journal article abstracts through an API, perhaps using a Python for loop, by reading in a CSV and spitting out a CSV with a new column added with the analysis performed.
Links for models and tools
I want to start with a totally freely available model, so again, that excludes things like LLaMA where the weights are only available through a wait list. The two models that most get my attention and (I think, and hope) fit my criteria of open availability are Cerebras-GPT (13b) and Bloomz (7b). The tools to process and fine-tune that seem most feasible to me, from my limit knowledge, are xturing and basaran.
Proposed approach
I'll start by downloading the data dump of journal articles from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) so that I have a whole lot of freely usable journal article data to work with, although I'd then have to filter it for articles that have something to do with the topic I want to focus on. I want to use at least two models, just as they are with no additional training, to process some (tentatively thinking 1000) journal article abstracts and ask a question like what country the study was carried out in, and then compare the results between the two tools. Wherever they agree, I could leave those in, and where they disagree, I could manually review them. Then I repeat this process for a few other types of questions I'd like to ask about these abstracts. Then, and here is the part that sounds good in my head but I don't know how feasible it is, I'd like to fine tune both models using this bank of corrected questions and answers. With the two fine-tuned models, I'd repeat the process, but this time with a larger pool of new journal article abstracts, say 20,000. I would no longer be able to manually review all the discrepancies between the two models, so I'd just remove any that don't agree and move on. Do that for a few different questions about the abstracts, and then go through another round of fine-tuning. Continue for one more round with say 50,000 new journal article abstracts and do a last round of fine-tuning. By this point, I would have processed more than 70,000 abstracts with multiple questions, and even accounting for discrepancies that I would have to throw out, I should have at least 150,000 or so prompt+response pairs to use for fine-tuning. At this point, I release this whole bank of prompt+response pairs as an open source dataset, write up an article comparing the results of the two base models on the tasks I'm doing at the before fine-tuning, initial small fine-tuning, larger fine-tuning, and final fine-tuning stages. The academic community then gets a dataset it can use for fine-tuning future models that has no ties at all to ChatGPT or any other closed AI tool, and thus any fine-tuning on this data should, as best as I can tell, not add any restrictions on the open usability of the resulting fine-tuned model. I could also released the final fine-tuned versions of the two models I use for this process, ready for other academics to use.
My questions
  1. What kind of time frame and resources do I need to consider for fine tuning say a 7b and a 13b LLM with my own dataset? Is this the kind of thing that could be done on a beefy consumer GPU over the course of a few days, or are we talking renting cloud computing with massive server graphics cards to get the time frame down under a week? I'm assuming that I'd apply whatever approaches might help reduce resource use, like LoRa and whatever else you kind people might suggest.
  2. How do I go about actually making a data set for fine tuning? I mean, if I have a bunch of prompt+response pairs, how do I wrangle that into something that could be used to fine-tune a LLM?
  3. Does this process of fine-tuning on a little data, processing more data on the new fine-tuned models, fine-tuning again, processing more data, fine-tuning again actually sound feasible? Are the time/resources constraints just too big of a hurdle to overcome? Is the gain in accuracy for specific tasks substantial enough after fine-tuning on just 1000 or 2000 examples enough to be worth it?
  4. Based on the models and the tools that I have linked in this post, do you have any recommendations of others that I should try in addition, or instead? Keeping in mind that I want this to remain 100% open, so I can't use any tools that would leave restrictions on the output generated, the way ChatGPT did in the Alpaca project, for example.
Thanks for making it through this long post. For what it's worth, if this does seem feasible, and with the suggestions of you fine folks, I'll probably draft this up into a formal research proposal.

2023.04.02 08:20 Persistent_One Assaulted by Temecula Hair Stylist. Any advice?

Hello, here to seek advice and also, perhaps, share a warning of something that happened in our community.
It was about 5:25pm on Tuesday 3/28 when I looked down at my phone. My beautiful and amazing wife was calling but my phone was on silent. She was at a hair appointment and I was surprised it was already over. I swiped to answer and simultaneously noticed she had tried to call me 5 previous times within the last minute. What I heard on the other end, I never want hear again... ever. She was crying hysterically, screaming "Come, Help ME! He cut my hair! He cut my hair! Call 911!" Immediately, I was grabbing my keys and running to my truck. "I'm coming honey, I'm on my way!," I exclaimed. I hung up and started dialing 911.
.............................
My wife's hair was 32inches from the top of her head to her butt. It would be what a hair stylist would call "Extra-Long". We have recently moved to Temecula, so she was visiting a new stylist; one she had scoped out. He had good reviews, good prices, and had many photos of hair colored the way she was looking for- dark brown base with blonde streaks. She has had it this way as long as I've known her. She doesn't do much for herself, so when she gets her hair colored every 4 months, it is a big deal.
She met with the stylist for a consultation, and he said he could and would provide the service she was looking for, and that she would be very happy with the outcome. So, on the day of the appointment she sat in his chair for 2 hours as he performed his hair services, chatting about things as most would during a hair appointment. They spoke of family, Faith, and the community. He mentioned that he had been in business for 40 years, and that he has had 5 previous shops. She was undoubtedly excited about how her hair was going to turn out.
When the color treatment was over, he began to wash her out in his sink. He told her that he had never had someone in his chair with hair as long as hers and asked her if she wanted a cut. She quickly said no, as she hardly ever cuts it. So, they moved back to the chair and he pulled out the mirror. She saw the color was absolutely not what she wanted. Her hair was very dark, with blue/gray streaks all throughout. She told him, "this isn't good, this isn't what I wanted." She asked if would re-do it. He was reluctant and responded with hostility. He started grabbing at her and taking a hot straight iron to her hair. "You'll see, you'll see," he expressed. She said "no, please re-do it." Angerly and still grabbing at her, he said "You want me to re-do it, pay me $500, Zelle, now!" Even though the initial visit was going to be $160, and $500 is way more than she would ever pay normally, at this point she would pay anything not to leave the salon in this fashion. She said "fine, do whatever you need to do." Before she could pay him, however, she became scared.
He was standing over her, aggressive and tense, and in her close proximity. "It will be fine, you'll see," he continued. She needed to escape, so she stood up and just like that, he grabbed his scissors, reached and cut at her hair. She looked down and saw a lot of her hair on the ground. "WHY did you do that!?!," she screamed. "I smelled trouble," he said. She gathered her things and ran for the door and fell to the sidewalk outside his shop, crying and screaming hysterically. The man followed her, untied and pulled his apron off of her. At some point, he told her "you don't like it, sue me!" and ran back in and locked his shop doors.
She called me at this moment, and I drove as fast as I could around the corner to the shopping center. I was speaking to 911 dispatchers and explaining that the stylist had just assaulted her and she was in dire need of help. I found her on the ground, absolutely distraught. This beautiful woman did not deserve this. I held her as she cried. I looked up and saw this man in his shop, taking pictures or recording video with his cell phone through the glass walls. My wife asked me where the police were, so I tried to call again. The dispatcher said they were on their way and be patient. I went to the window to yell at the man. We were 2 feet from each other, separated by glass. Since he had locked his doors, I couldn't go in. So, I was telling him "come out, the police are coming and are going to want to talk to you!" But he wouldn't come out. Lucky for him because I would have gladly opened up a can for messing with my wife. I said "why did you do this?" and he said, "because she wouldn't pay!" I pulled out my wallet and said "you want money? you would hurt a woman, for money? you are evil and have evil in your heart." He could obviously care less as I watched him sweep my wife's hair from under his chair, bag it up, and walk out the back door of his shop.
Riverside County Sheriff's Deputies arrived and assisted my wife. They took a statement from her and were kind and professional the whole time. They took photos of the damages. This man had cut over 12 inches of her hair off! They explained that even if he thought she was leaving without paying, he couldn't legally cut her hair like that. They left us with a card and a case number and explained that we could call the DA's office in about a week to see how the charges were going. And then they left.
...............................
And here we are. My beautiful, lovely and amazing wife is so distraught. It's been 4 days. She's waking up crying. She's sad and feels the pain from the trauma all day. She's emotionally devastated. We each missed work the following day as she saw another hair stylist to fix what could be fixed. But she doesn't feel okay. She's reached out for therapy. We've called lawyers for legal consultation and have learned that we can seek criminal action against him, which we've already started by pressing charges. We've learned that we can civilly sue him, but every personal injury lawyer we've talked to has said this is unique and not worth it for them to take on. They all say the same thing, that there is a lawyer out there that will, but that they don't have the bandwidth for something like this. They all tell us that we can, at last resort, take him and his business to small claims court. Which may likely be what we do.
I filed a complaint on the CA State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering explaining everything mentioned here. Hopefully, that at least helps to not renew his license.
But, retribution is necessary here. Someway, somehow. I want to see my wife feel whole again. This woman is an angel. She cares for disabled adults and hardly does anything nice for herself. She is her children's whole world and mine too. She deserves retribution for this pain inflicted by this monster.
Any advice on what we should do? Has anyone ever gone through something similar?

2023.04.02 08:15 Plantmumsy Uncontrolled itching?

Have had an itchy torso for over a week now, no rash and scratched to the point I broke blood vessels. Went to urgent care and was given a 5 day burst of steroids, since nothing I was doing at home worked. Even dialed down the heat in my shower as the hot water made it much worse.
2 doses of the steroid has yet to help improve it so I'm hoping by day 5 I have relief, but I am mystified as to what caused this. No new items in skincare, clean sheets, no change to laundry detergent.
We did a CBC panel but I won't get answers until Monday at the earliest.
Has anyone else experienced this? I have some other issues going on, but the itching is the most bothersome.

Ok, so this is my interpretation of the flower mv. It's nothing much, and it's just really simple, but I just wanted to share mine as well, in a single post.
This story took place in just two days.
First day - evening Second day - morning(day-time)
Flower is a love song(break-up), and flower represents both love, and also Jisoo herself. Just like how Jisoo was a flower in the jacket poster. In the MV, Jisoo is not a certain type of flower, but expresses different kinds of flowers with the various colors of the outfits. For example, the purple dress reminded me of lilac(people mostly think of purple flowers for lilac in Korea) mentioned in the song, and it's floriography is first love, or starting of love(at least in Korea).
This MV goes back and forth in time, and the easiest way to see it is the time setting(day-time/night-time). The chapter names are just about the scenes they show with the chapter names, so the MV timeline is not divided strictly by those three chapters.
The MV:
  1. Second Day Jisoo is wearing a white dress, as she touches the curtain. It seems like she just got up. She touches the flowers, and breathes it. It shows how the the theme of the song/mv, strengthens the Jisoo-flower connection, and also shows that the flower(meaning love) is not gone yet.
  2. Second Day "CHAPTER 1, Next Day" directly tells us that this scene, Jisoo in the car wearing a blue modern outfit, is the second day Jisoo.
  3. Second Day Back to the morning Jisoo in white. She doesn't show any negative emotions, until she hears a knock on the door, and a staff seems to notice her about her check out time. Jisoo then precedes to pick her outfit, and her choice seems to be the all black dress. Jisoo in the mirror, shows us her change of facial expressions, going dispirited.
  4. Second Day The song starts with she used to be "nice as ABC, Do re mi." She was not too hard to love(unlike Rosé lol). Easy and simple just like ABC and do re mi, that's how easy being her lover can be, keeping the basics.
Then this black dress Jisoo comes out to the corridor of the hotel. As a hotel staff passes by, she tilts her head, and hides her face. She doesn't want people to see her face, not because she still likes "that person", but she doesn't want to be judged by others thinking, she got stood up, or show others her unhappy face.
  1. First Day The first, first day scene. Here, she is wearing a greenish flower pattern dress. It's dark outside, and she is dancing alone in the hotel lobby, as if waiting for someone. In this scene, a cat appears, and Jisoo and the cat looks at each other, both sitting on their chairs.
The cat and Jisoo is very much alike. It's not just the mysterious, beautiful, quiet vibe, but also how she described herself. House cats stays in the house, and wait for their owner(love) to come home. They are sensitive beings, but usually not that hard to take care of them, compared to other animals. Most of them are capable of taking care of themselves, like they do not require walks or frequent bathes, and most can control their own diets. They aren't that clingy, and to be a good caregiver, you just have to do the basics, which includes caring and loving).
The other important factor in this scene, is the pearl necklace. The pearl necklace stands for love and relationship in this MV. She has the necklace on as she is waiting for that person to come, not just in the room, but in the lobby. Therefore, she is waiting and looking forward to meet her love.
  1. First Day She was waiting in the lobby, but that person did not show up. In the elevator, as she goes back to her room, there is no one beside her, but just the hotel staff in the elevator. She does not look happy.
  2. Second Day Jisoo in her own hotel room is definitely angry. The flower vase hits the floor because of her, and the flowers, representing love, falls to the ground.
  3. Second Day "CHAPTER 2, Same Time" shows that this Jisoo dancing with the other dancers, took place in the second day morning, when she is in her room, alone. It shows her emotions. The outfit is black and red. Red is the color of flowers, and it can also be the color of flames(붉게 타버려진 너와 나, you and me burnt red). So the flower, Jisoo, or love, is currently burning, and already half burnt black. The other dancers are wearing black, but red(flower, love) is covering their eyes, showing love is able to blind people's eyes.
  4. "CHAPTER 3, Same Place" This is neither the first day or the second day. Jisoo is wearing a turquoise dress, and looking inside a yellow shop. Inside, it shows the pearl necklace, and she is looking at the necklace with a serious face. This scene is trying to show us, that the necklace has a certain significance in this MV. "Same Place" indicates that is the same place where she got the pearl necklace, which is likely a present given to her by her lover.
  5. Second Day The MV once again shows us the black Jisoo, who is ready to leave the hotel. The reflection in the mirror, says, "I'm fine, will you be fine?" This can be a thing said to herself, and to the person she was waiting for as well. Behind her, we can see the staffs moving her clothes, as if helping her pack her things.
  6. First Day Dancing Jisoo wearing a cyan outfit. It's night-time, so it's still the first day. Her makeup and style doesn't look docile at all, so this is an angry, upset Jisoo who got stood up. However, the outfit still has color, the love wasn't gone at this point, and she is mad because of love.
  7. First Day She is on her way to her hotel room. In the corridor, she gets rid of her pearl necklace, tearing it apart. She is very angry and highly disappointed, as she had high expectations. The pearl necklace is foreshadowing the end of the relationship, but things can change.
  8. First Day Pink Jisoo and the impressive hand-flower choreography. The flower disappears into the air after nodding twice, as if foreshadowing the flower(love) is about to be gone.
  9. Second Day The same Jisoo from "CHAPTER 1, Next Day" appears again. She is in a good mood, no regrets left at all, after leaving the hotel. Unlike the black dress she was wearing when she was leaving her room, after leaving the hotel, she is now wearing a colorful outfit again, which even has a big heart in the front. Although the flower(love) she used to be was burnt to ashes(black dress), she still is the colorful Jisoo she used to be. This shows that she wasn't affected by the break-up negatively. In fact, this outfit not only has color, but is very modern as well, unlike most other outfits in this mv, that were classically beautiful. Her expression almost seems mischievous, and with her new modern style outfit, it shows that she now has become a person with confidence and control, instead of the "classical" person that used to wait.
  10. Second Day(Final Scene) This is the Jisoo, just before leaving the hotel. The love that has been burnt to ashes, and the black dress that represents it. Even the necklace is black, but unlike the scene with the pearl necklace, she takes it off easily, as if it's nothing significant. It seems like she is just dusting the remaining ashes off, and as she was leaving the hotel, even the other remaining ashes must have fell down, revealing the colorful Jisoo again.
Timeline First day, she was waiting for her lover. However, that person never showed up, and she goes back to her room. On the way back to her room, Jisoo, feeling disappointed and mad, tears her pearl necklace apart. At night, she was very angry, but in the next day, she has calmed down over the night. She is still willing to give that person a second chance. The love is not totally gone, but unlike the night before, when she was mad because of 'love', she was able to step back and review the relationship rationally. Unfortunately, even in the next day, the person did not show up, and missed the last chance Jisoo was trying to give(잡지 않은 거는 너니까, The one who didn't try to hold on/catch me was you). She was again disappointed, and left the hotel, wearing a black dress. However, Jisoo outside the hotel is not the one burnt to ashes, but a colorful, confident Jisoo.
Lyrics: I have also metioned this in the megathread, but the line "꽃향기만 남기고 갔단다(I only left the scent of the flower behind)" reminded me of this song called "우리 집에 왜 왔니(why did you come to my house)". This is a children's game and also a traditional children's song. This game is also called "꽃 찾기 놀이(Game of finding the flower)", which goes perfectly with the song, Flower.
우리 집에 왜 왔니 왜 왔니 왜 왔니 Why did you come to my house 꽃 찾으러 왔단다 왔단다 왔단다 I came to find flowers 무슨 꽃을 찾으러 왔느냐 왔느냐 What kind of flower are you looking for here [ ]꽃을 찾으러 왔단다 I came to find the [ ] flower. 가위 바위 보 Rock paper scissors !
The original lyric of this children's song, suggests that "the person" might have tried to go back to her to find the flower(Love, Jisoo) afterwards. But, this person missed their last chance, and the closest thing they were able to find was just the scent she left behind.
This song has a great connection to the b-side, All Eyes On Me as well. In AEOM, Jisoo tells the listener, "넌 나만 바라봐, 그게 당연한 거야, 욕심이 아니잖아".(You should only look at me, that should be a given, it's not greed.) meaning it's one of the basics. She tells them her eyes are looking at them, so they should not look away as well, and says, "한순간 눈 깜빡할 사이 사라질지 몰라"(I might disappear in a single moment, in the blink of an eye), which is clearly a warning.
However, in the Flower MV, that person made her disappointed, as their eyes were not on Jisoo. They missed the last chance too, by not showing up the next day either. Unable to find her except for the scents(traces) she left behind, was an expected ending, as that person clearly didn't take her warning seriously.
(+ Jisoo was known for resembling the Chinese actress Tang Wei, when she debuted in Korea. There still are people talking about how they have similar features. When I was watching this music video, it reminded me of the movie, 헤어질 결심(2022), Decision to Leave. It stars Tang Wei, and the vibe of the Flower mv(hk film vibes from some scenes, toned down mv, and the mysterious, quiet, mostly unhappy female lead) reminded me of that movie. I think both the Korean title(Resolution to Break Up) and the English title of this movie(Decision to Leave) could also be a good match with this mv.)

2023.04.02 07:36 avromcleary A Comprehensive Review of Repetionain.com: Is It Worth Your Time and Money?

Repetionain employs a common ruse used by dishonest online retailers to entice unsuspecting customers: drastically discounting its products. Customers should be aware that extremely low prices or deals that seem too good to be true may indicate poor quality products or a potential scam. It is important to thoroughly research the site's reputation and read customer reviews before making any purchases from Repetionain. Additionally, customers should also be wary of providing their personal and financial information to the site as there have been reports of fraudulent activity and unauthorized charges on credit cards. It is recommended to use a secure payment method and avoid saving any payment information on the site to prevent potential identity theft or financial loss.

Transferred Material:

Repetionain's website's layout and content are similar to those of a number of dubious online retailers, raising questions about its legitimacy. It is recommended to read customer reviews and consider alternative options before purchasing Repetionain. It is also advisable to use secure payment methods and avoid providing personal information beyond what is necessary for the transaction. Additionally, if there are any doubts or concerns about the legitimacy of the website, it is best to err on the side of caution and refrain from making any purchases.

Use of social media:

This website differs from legitimate online retailers who typically provide social media icons linked to their social media groups, pages, or profiles by not having one that points users to its business-related social media page. Before making any purchases from such websites, it is essential to use caution and conduct careful research. Legitimate online retailers usually have active social media accounts, which they use to interact with their customers and promote their products.
