This may sound too good to be true, but anyone in CHARLOTTE NC wanna go to the Logic concert tomorrow for free?
2023.06.10 05:21 ManOfEveryHour This may sound too good to be true, but anyone in CHARLOTTE NC wanna go to the Logic concert tomorrow for free?
| Just as title suggests.. Purchased this ticket a few months back expecting to go with someone but it didn't work out. I've listed it on Ticketmaster but it doesn't seem to be selling, as there's still plenty seats left. I'm not the biggest fan myself and honestly rather make someone's day. Doesn't include parking or anything like that but it's free! Comment below why you wanna go and I'll pick one random person and will send it your way if no one purchases it between now & 12pm tomorrow. Good luck to everyone! submitted by ManOfEveryHour to Logic_301 [link] [comments] |

2023.06.10 03:15 Specialist-Prior-759 Narcissistic ex BF (36M) has been hacking and stalking me for 2 years now and won't leave me alone. Please help
I'm a 28F currently dealing with a revenge obsessed ex-boyfriend (36M) who has been stalking me online for at least 2 years now and is hell bent on destroying my life. Basically I was his first GF in 7 years at the time and prior to the girl before me who cheated on him he claimed he never had a GF except girls who thought he looked like Harry Potter in middle school. He is 36 and doesn't have a lot of experience with women so the break up is apparently still difficult for him to process even though its 3 years later and we have not spoken except me asking him profusely to stop doing this stuff.
At the time we were dating a few years ago I was dealing with some identity issues during our relationship which I was honest with him about, (identified as bisexual at the time, but was questioning my sexuality). We had some disagreements about it and he would always ask why he couldn't stay over early on in the relationship (~1 month into it). I ended up breaking things off with him after roughly 4 months because I felt like we weren't compatible and also because I had lost my job at the time and was dealing with personal issues on the side (severely depressed, was in therapy for it).
We were friends for a short time after the breakup until things started getting VERY weird. He began circling the road next to my apartment several times per hour EVERY DAY. At the time I considered it strange but had a limited knowledge of technology other than basic CS classes I had taken in the past. The internet would randomly shut off for 30 mins - 1 hour for no reason. I would later find out in the logs the router was being hit with DOS attacks several times per day.
I would also see my documents on Google Drive opened by strange usernames of fake accounts, and eventually had a remote access trojan on my laptop after he sent me photos of us through Google Photos which I suspect he used to infect my computer. He would backspace while I typed, open and close windows, click random things on the screen, and straight up mess with me for several hours per day every day for MONTHS.
Then eventually the computer crashed and would never start again. It was a $1500 Macbook Pro. My new car also mysteriously got something poured in the fuel tank and after a few weeks and several hundreds of dollars of new parts no mechanic could fix the car. My apartment was broken into repeatedly with subtle signs of forced entry but nothing stolen. Examples: Pry marks on the inside of the front door, side door and back door, personal care items like body wash, underwear or bras stolen or moved, coming home to find personal documents like medical records, tax records, and bank info layed out on my bedroom floor shuffled around. I filed police reports each time it happened but couldn't prove it was him.
My car has also been broken into a few times now with my dashcam broken off the mount, hidden under the passenger seat, stick figures taking a dump drawn on my windshield, and nails in my back tire and spare tire. I believe he put a GPS tracker on the car because I have heard someone outside opening and closing the car door but nothing was stolen. So far no mechanic has been able to find a tracker and I couldn't either.
I had to stop using the wifi at my apartment because every device I use on that network gets hacked (multiple different laptops, 2 kindles, and 3 cell phones). I found a keylogger on my M1 Macbook Pro (~$2000) which he also placed persistent malware on and I can not get rid of despite wiping the hard drive 8 times since this January. He defaced my professional website I was trying to use to get a job twice (first time put a pic of nude child and set his hacker username as my bank account number, added a redirect link which I stupidly clicked on and then it downloaded some sort of spyware or RAT onto my device, 2nd time he put up 2 women doing the deed also nude).
He has had remote access to this computer for an unknown amount of time and I can not afford to replace it. My cell phone also booted up into safe mode the next morning and the background was changed on my work/school email account. I tried taking my computer to a repair shop and they claimed if he does have a RAT on it, it is likely hidden on the recovery partition and they weren't able to find it or get it off my computer. This is a $2000 M1 Mac and he already destroyed my previous Macbook Pro which cost me $1500.
I also had to buy a new cell phone after I kept getting creepy phone calls and phishing texts from unknown numbers. When he put the new keylogger on my computer recently I saw where he made a folder which he named the digits of my new phone number. I had just bought a brand new Samsung Galaxy and he already got the new phone number for it and hacked it. He kept enabled the camera and microphone and while I was eating turned on the camera and started recorded me while I was eating. I factory reset the phone and he was still able to control the camera and mic on it.
I have reported him to the FBI IC3 unit 6 times now in the last year and now he is getting cocky about it and knows he will get away with it so he keeps doing it. He knows I am broke with no money and can't afford a new computer, to move away, or to keep buying a new cell phone every month and he seems to get off on trying to destroy my whole life. I have not spoken to him in 3 years now and we do not talk at all. I sent him a FB message telling him to stop explaining to him I have been going through a lot since my sister died a few years ago and just want to be left alone. He keeps doing it and won't stop.
He also recruited my crush who I never mentioned to him to help him with the hacking (my crush is a system admin) and now my crush won't speak to me at all and hates my guts. I have no idea what he said to my crush or how he got them to come after me but they have been going full on nuclear and won't stop. I caught him staking me out a few days ago at the gas station across from a wifi hotspot I was using where he was just sitting there for an extended period of time watching me. Then when I started drive near him he inched his truck like he was thinking about if he was going to follow me or not. He also knows when I come and go at night and drives by my apartment minutes after I get home at different times.
This guy seems to think I owe him something and has a serious problem. He just keeps doing all this and will not stop. While I am not the type of person to do anything crazy back, the police have done nothing and in terms of the hacking there is not a lot they can do. What can I do to at least expose this guy. I don't think he is ever going to stop until he kills me and this has got to stop.

2023.06.10 03:06 Specialist-Prior-759 Narcissistic ex BF (36M) has been hacking me for 2 years now and won't leave me alone.

2023.06.10 01:25 Affectionate-Yak2965 Accepted to 6 Canadian Medical Schools: Guide to Canadian School Applications
Hi Everyone 😊 I was going to wait to make a post closer to the peak of the application season but I've been seeing people post about starting their applications so I figured now was as good a time as any.
Some house keeping things first because I know it does provide a lot of context in posts like this. My stats were 3.95 OMSAS GPA, 517 MCAT (129/128/130/130) and 4Q Casper. I have a research based MSc, 2 first author publications, a few conference presentations and some awards. I also worked as a research assistant at the time of my application. IP in Ontario and a black applicant.
I was accepted at UofT, Mac, Queens, uCalgary, uAlberta and UBC. Waitlisted at uOttawa. I did not apply to any other school in Canada. Didn't apply to Western because by the time the deadline came around, I really did not have it in me to write 8 essays so I figured I would risk it as save myself the money.
For all schools except Queens, I applied under the black student stream. A note about the black stream because I know it sometimes gets a lot of hate and some students are weary of applying. If you are black and feel like you connect with that part of yourself, please use this stream! I can only speak for myself but I know there have been times where I was underestimated or judged because I was black. Applying through this stream ATTEMPTS to level the playing field by making sure your application is judged by people who look like you. Most other non-minority applicants already have a panel that looks like them so why shouldn't you? Up until 2018, Queens even still had a policy on the books, enforced or not, that stated they did not accept black students to medical school so just know that institutionalized racism is alive and well so don't miss out on the opportunity to participate in solutions. Applying through this stream is even more work because you need to write an extra essay so don't feel shame in using this program.
Also, please know that you are not defined by being accepted or not. I know it probably sounds pretentious coming from someone who got in but I found myself through the application cycle really being affected by potentially not becoming a doctor. As someone of faith, I truly believe everything happens for a reason so I decided to put in the best application I could and let the chips fall where they may. If I did not get in, I was going to become a genetic counsellor and really start living the rest of my life instead of waiting for med school to upend my life. You are more than any application and a rejection does not make you any less worthy.
Okay back to the guide. Note: These are not my actual entries just to avoid any plagiarism. Every example I give is just an example. Also, I had 2 of my friends read every single thing I submitted, twice, to make sure what made sense to me when I wrote it also made sense to them. To avoid burnout, I would suggest reusing as many entries as you can. For UBC, Calgary and Alberta, I copied and pasted and then just cut to the character limit so that I was not re-inventing the wheel.
I figured the best way to make this post was to go school by school because my application to each school was slightly different.
- UBC since it was the first one I submitted: I believe my AGPA was 92.67 and I applied at the regular deadline. For the research and publications, I added literally everything. Journal articles, poster presentations, my thesis (MSc and 4th year). For activities, I leaned into the non-traditional ones (e.g I showed leadership by being an older sibling) and really focused on quantitive measures of success (e.g how much money I raised or how many people I trained) then ended with how the activity improved me. eg "I collaborated with 10 MSc students to organize the 2015 career day. We had weekly meetings to discuss planning and delegate activities. I learned to combine different viewpoints to achieve a common goal." Please have fun with the diversity of experiences section. I literally talked about teaching myself how to use a research program and learning to dance. I also left the high performance section blank. If you have something to add there, great! If not, it does not make or break your application. For UBC, I really think they value realness so be yourself because that is literally the best you can do.
- uCalgary was next: GPA was 4.0 because a grade from my MSc could replace my lowest grade from undergrad. This school was a little tricker because there is just one section where you can add top 10 activities. I just selected the top 10 things I had a lot of hours for and was passionate about and added them here. This included research projects/publications where I focused on how I overcame struggles with my project, my first research experience etc. My descriptions were similar to what I wrote for my UBC entries but in the experience impact, I really dug deep and spoke about how I struggled in each role and how I leveraged the people around me to fix problems. I also took the time to talk about why I involved myself in the activity in the first place. So my love for teaching led me to tutor.
- Alberta: GPA 4.0 I took activities from my Calgary and UBC applications and filled up this application. Please take the essays seriously, I know I really did. Do not minimize your experiences/challenges. I ended up writing about something I really did not think anyone would care about but it really shaped who I was. I started university at 16 years old and it was very hard for me but it shaped who I was. I also spoke about discrimination I felt as a black student. But do not forget to make the essays positive as well. Yes talk about how these situations were hard but also talk about how they made you resilient, strong and eager to help others. No one wants to finish reading an essay and feel depressed. Show them that you overcame these challenges and it strengthened your zeal to become a physician even more.
Ontario schools: In general I approached each ABS entry in my own modified XYZ method. This just means I provided details by quantifying my impact (numbers) and then talked about what I did. If I had the characters, I spoke about what I learnt. I also wrote down words that represented all the canmeds and spread them throughout my sketch. eg communicate, collaborate, lead, advocate, professional, mentor, manage, reliable, responsible, teamwork, serve, respect. I made sure I used these words when I could. I also used short form to save character limits such as pt instead of patient. Internt'l instead of international. Lastly, I tried to have a good spread of things in each section. I even included 2 entries in the other section.
Some examples
a. enrolled 50 pts in research studies by calling & consenting them, respecting confidentiality and explaining studies
b. Raised $2.5k for breast cancer research by working with 10 community volunteers to plan a bake sale.
c. Taught science to 15 high school students to increase their grades. Taught me how to teach people at their own pace.
- UofT: In your UofT essays both the short ones and the long one, make sure you are covering your 4 UofT clusters. I essentially covered 2 clusters in one short essay and 2 in the other and then hit all 4 in the long essay. Even if you just mention something that points to a cluster. It might seem hard to combine them in one activity so I would suggest picking an activity where is is relatively easy. I do not know how they grade the essays but I wanted to be safe and get all the points possible in case they grade the clusters in each essay. For the long essay, I would suggest also writing it as a story. I started with what got me into the activity, what I enjoyed about it, how I struggled, how I overcame, how it made me want to be a doctor and how I use the things I learnt in my day to day life.
5, 6 and 7. Ottawa, Mac and Queens, you really don't have more to do apart from the ABS and the black stream essay if applicable so your interview will be a major part of your application
General note about interviews: I am very good at interviews so I was not worried but you can practice and improve. I videoed myself a lot just to hear if I had any words I kept saying (for me it was I think...) or see if I was keeping eye contact. I would also treat each interview like a conversation with a friend. I like talking about random things so the MMIs were my favourite. Calm down and breath before you start answering each question. Also really think about your responses before you speak and have faith in your answer. There is usually no wrong or right answer so that also means you can change your mind when presented with new information, I did that a lot. Do not panic if you have technical difficulties, I had them at UBC, Mac, Calgary and Alberta. I still got in, trust me it's normal. Lastly, I started and ended each station with a big smile and actually tried to enjoy the interviews.
Now to answer a question I know some people may have, what school will I be attending. I am actually going to be attending a school in the US in the fall so you can checkout my other post to hear about that application process.

Memory transcription subject: Tarlim, Venlil Civilian Date [standardized human time]: April 4, 2143 I don’t know how long I was in hiding for, I just remember hearing the screams of people outside before falling asleep when it all died down. I got up from the floor and peaked out of my closet to see if there was a break in before leaving it entirely. I checked my front door to see if the locks were still locked and, luckily enough, it was still intact. I set out a sigh of relief before walking back to my living room and slumping back down on my couch. I took my medication as I picked up my datapad from the floor, hoping everything that happened earlier was just a bad dream. The first thing I noticed was that my pad spat back an error message. That was strange, the infrastructure was too developed to not have net access in the middle of a city.
Glancing up towards the window, I noticed a strange red hue coming from behind the curtain. I set my pad down on the couch as I got up and walked to the window. I could feel my paws begin to shake as I grabbed the curtains. Anticipating the worst, I hesitantly opened the curtains and peaked outside. It was worse than anything I could have expected: The remains of dead Venlil littered the street below as more continued to pile on. Orange blood coated the surrounding building walls as mutated Venlil ripped apart anyone they got their paws on. One of them eventually came across a mother and child attempting to hide underneath the surrounding rubble. It didn’t hesitate to attack the woman before another mutant came by to try and steal its catch. They fought each other relentlessly, trying to keep her in their grasp. Their claws tore deeply into her skin and muscles as they fought, causing her to scream from the unimaginable amount of pain. She took one last look at her child and yelled at him to run before her throat was torn off.
The child ran for his life, dodging around rubble and mutants and for a brief moment, I thought he might make it! Then a mutant Krakotl swooped down over him, a barbed tendril emerged from its beak and stabbed the pup in the shoulder. Screaming in pain he was lifted into the air as the mutant flew off to Protector knows where. As I swept my gaze across the city, similar scenes played out: survivors ran through the streets, slipping on pools of blood as they were pursued by packs of mutants; doors and windows were smashed to pieces as people looted for supplies; buildings were engulfed in flames as malfunctioning fire traps and improvised weapons were set off; mutants of every conceivable species rampaged through the city, attacking everyone they could find.
I fell to my knees as I vomited from the sight of the massacre outside. The blood, the gore, it was too much! My consciousness was escaping me as my heart pounded in my chest. I was hyperventilating, I was going to die, everything swirled around I was, I couldn’t-
Focus. Breathe. Calm. Forcing the tirade of emotion back I shakely I got back up and looked back outside, only to lock eyes with one of the mutant Venlil. Its head turned to stare at me, its eye solid black with streaks of red running through it. For a moment, we simply stared at each other, before it started to run towards my apartment complex in a strange loping gait. It was picking up speed with every step and soon ran on all fours, galloping over rubble and trappling eviscerated corpses. I stumbled away from the window and ran to my door. There was no spehing way that I was fighting that thing. Right when I unlocked it, I heard the shattering of glass behind me. In the corner of my eye I could see the monster clambering through the window, shards of broken glass tearing at its flesh. I went through the door as fast as I could as it regained its posture. The moment I closed it behind me, I heard a loud thud behind me, signifying the mutant had attempted to lunge at me, ‘How the speh did it reach my window!? I’m four stories up!’ I thought before running down the hallway.
As I ran down through the hallway, I could see the place was in ruin: the walls that lined the hallway were torn and covered in streaks of Venlil blood as the lights above flickered unrhythmically. I zigzagged from door to door, looking for somewhere to hide, but every apartment was locked. I soon heard the bang of a door being knocked off its hinges from down the corridor. I felt my heart pounding, threatening to burst out of my chest at the exertion, but I pushed on. I briefly considered the elevator upon reaching the end of the corridor, but realized power to it was most likely cut. I ran to the stairwell and raced down it as fast as I could, taking two or three steps at a time. I could hear the creature burst into the stairwell as soon as I reached the first floor. That thing was fast, too fast.
I ran through the hallways of the first floor and saw that most of the apartments had already been broken into. The people who used to live here are either dead, mutated, or in hiding. I could feel my legs starting to ache from running so fast for so long, but I couldn’t stop. I could feel my quads beginning to tear underneath my skin as my heart pounded vigorously. I could try to hide in one of the open apartments, but what difference would that make? I would just be waiting to die. I can’t keep running like this, I need something to defend myself with.
As the pain within my legs began to set in, I decided to run into one of the open apartments anyway to escape that thing. Upon entering, I ran through the ruined apartment and went straight into the bathroom to hide. I closed and locked the door as quietly as possible before taking stock of the room. Compared to the rest of the apartment, hell the rest of the complex, it looked disturbingly normal. I looked around for a few moments to see if there was anything I could use in case that thing does find me, but there was nothing. Then I noticed a window looking out onto an alleyway. I went to the window and fumbled at the latch and pushed it open. Quickly crawling my way through, I stumbled slightly as I hit the ground. Looking around, I spotted an abandoned shipping crate sitting against the wall. I shifted my weight and prepared to run when I heard the cracking of splintering wood behind me. I sprinted down the alleyway and slid behind the crate without bothering to look behind me. There was more cracking and splintering and the twisted pants of the mutant. Cautiously peeking around the crate, I saw it stepping out of the window frame. The shattered remains of the window sitting on the floor below it. It stalked down the alleyway towards me, its eyes scanning for any sign of its prey. Ducking back behind my crate, I frantically searched for anything I could use to fight. As I shuffled further behind the crate, I felt my paw brushed against a discarded wrench. someone had likely been performing maintenance on the exterior pipes and the wrench had been left behind. Gripping it tightly, I got myself into a crouching position and prepared to move at a moment's notice…
After a moment of silence, I heard a woman’s voice, “Tarlim, are you there? I heard a window break from around the corner,” she said
My ears peaked up at the voice, could that be…
“Barlen?” I said quietly.
“Barlen, keep your voice down!” I called out, I didn’t want her to get killed.
“Sorry” she replied, more quietly this time.
“There was a mutant crawling around here,” I told her.
“I saw it, it went the other way, it must have seen easier prey,” she responded.
I let out a sigh of relief and slowly got up to my feet, leaning against the crate, the wrench hanging loosely at my side.
“Thank the protector, it’s good to see a friendly face…”
I looked up, and sitting on the crate, was the creature.
“It’s good to see you too,” it said, perfectly mimicking Barlen’s voice.
Its three petaled mouth opened wide before pouncing at me. In a stroke of luck my body twisted and smacked it across the head with the wrench in my hands. It was hit so hard so quickly, I knocked out a couple teeth before it fell limp next to me. I took a few steps back before repeatedly hitting it in back of its head with the wrench in my paws. I don’t know how many times I did it, I just kept going until brain matter was exposed.
When I was sure it was dead, I fell back against the wall and sat down as I dropped the wrench next to me. I could feel my heart beginning to pound from exhaustion as I tried catching my breath.
Thoughts began to race through my mind as I stared at my paws in horror. This thing was not only incredibly fast and agile, but it was also capable of replicating voices. ‘How did it know Barlen’s voice, and how did it know it would work on me?’ I thought for a moment before remembering the press release prior to all of this. They showed a living planet, no bigger than a large moon, sitting motionless in the sky above as it formed an eye. I still remember the feeling it gave me: the horror was so great, I tried to convince myself before falling asleep that none of this was real; all of this was just a bad dream and I needed to wake up, but I knew that wasn’t true. I slowly turned my gaze up towards the sky and saw that thing looking down at us, looking down at me.
What if the reason why the mutant was able to figure out what voice to use to draw me out was because it wasn’t on its own? What if all those infected aren’t senseless monsters, but they were that thing’s puppets. They all bend to its will without question, and I have a reason to believe it can see through their eyes too.
The sound of distant roars quickly snapped me back to reality as I sat with my blood covered paws. Picking up my bloodied wrench, I slowly made my way down the alleyway and out into the street. I could feel my heart screaming in pain at the recent exertion, not once have I ever pushed my body so hard in my life. Carefully peering around the corner of the apartment complex, I scanned the street before me. It was completely deserted and any possible living thing that was here is either dead or in hiding. I took one last look around before leaving the backstreet. Creeping between overturned cars and mangled corpses, I kept my eyes peeled for any more of those mutants nearby. I was in such a fearful state, I could feel my body tense up at every unidentified noise and shadow. Twice I spotted mutants prowling the streets, but I was able to avoid them by staying hidden. Eventually, I circled back to my apartment building after making sure the coast was clear. I kept my eyes peeled and listened closely to my surroundings as I made my way upstairs. I can see all the damage that thing left behind as it chased me. I’m glad I was able to kill that thing when I did because if it had caught me I would be more than dead. I eventually reached my apartment four stories up and looked in from behind the door frame. The room was a mess: shattered glass and ripped curtains littered the floor as my window remained permanently open; my furniture was broken and torn into as everything else beyond the living room remained untouched. I looked in the dining room and saw my pack was still sitting on the table. After checking my bag to see if my pills were still there, I quickly searched for any food and water before making my way back outside. I needed to find somewhere safe.
As I crept through another back alley, I tried to remember the directions for the shelter. We were supposed to memorize their locations in the event of a raid, but I had for some reason not been included in the regular drills. Fortunately, they were not that hard to find, which seemed like a possible design flaw in retrospect. My musings were interrupted when I felt my pad vibrate in my pack. Confused, I reached in and pulled out my pad. I was honestly surprised it was getting a signal now. I looked at the alert and it says as follows:
“This is an emergency message sent to any and all remaining survivors of Dawn Creek and abroad: all emergency shelters within the surrounding cities have been compromised and any surviving Venlil are to find a place to hide and a weapon to defend yourselves with. These creatures are incredibly strong and agile and will do everything in their power to kill you no matter the cost. If you want to survive, you must follow these steps to the word:
- When it is silent and a mutant nearby, stay still and hold your breath. These things have incredibly sensitive hearing and can hear your breathing from up to six tails (12 feet) away.
- Stay out of sight and make sure they don’t see you. It is said that all of these creatures are somehow connected telepathically and function as a hive mind. If one of them sees you then they all know where you are.
- Do not listen to them. If they fail to find you, they will mimic the voices of your close friends or loved ones in an attempt to draw you out. If you hear a familiar voice, do not respond.
- When faced with a mutant, you must kill or maim them if you want a chance to escape. If you don’t then they will continue pursuing you. These things do not get tired and can chase you for miles without end.
- If you survive an attack with an infected Venlil and they manage to breach skin or their bodily fluids enter your body in any way, it is recommended that you self terminate for the safety of the herd. It is estimated to take an eighth of a claw before whatever substance in said fluid enters the brain and converts you from the inside out.
May the protector save us all.”
I silently stared at the screen in mute horror after reading the last line. Every shelter in the area had been compromised and anyone taking refuge there was more than likely dead. Just how many died unable to escape as their friends and family were torn apart? The Arxur, on some level at least, killed for food, but these things didn’t do any of that: They don’t eat what they can and leave whoever left is alive to make more meat, they eviscerate any living thing they lay their eyes on in the most painful way possible. To say they’re as bad as the Arxur would be putting it lightly. These things are far worse than anything any species has come across. I looked up at the sky for a moment as I held my pad in my hands. Its eye staring down at us from above as it watches these creatures it has created mutilate my people.
‘If this thing is truly as powerful and dangerous as Tarva says, then just how old is this thing? How many species before us have been mercilessly slaughtered by it without a second thought?’ I thought to myself as I stared at the planet above.
Suddenly, I heard the sound of approaching footsteps from down the road. I felt my heart skip a beat before running to hide behind a turned over car. I pinned back my ears and cautiously looked over the side of the car and saw a small group of exterminators in their suits scouting the area. Not once in my life have I felt so happy to see them. I got out of hiding with my paws up to show I wasn’t infected. Upon seeing me, they put up their flamethrowers on the ready until one of them recognized me.
“Tarlim!? You’re alive!?” One of the Venlil exterminators exclaimed as he took off his mask.
“Treven!?” I exclaimed in response.
‘Of all the exterminators I could have run into, why him?’ I despondently wondered.
“I honestly thought a freak like you would die first. Seems like I was wrong,” Treven said mockingly, “How did you survive anyway?”
My grip on the wrench tightened. Even after everything that had happened, they still couldn’t let go of their prejudices.
“I don’t know. I guess I was lucky,” I replied simply.
Treven scoffed, “Was it the same luck that almost cost me everything?”
I stood silent at his response. I couldn’t believe that after everything he was still acting like this… this… stupid,
selfish PRICK! “Everything we've ever cared about, is gone.” I said, struggling to control my voice.
I spread my paws out, gesturing to the destroyed city around us.
“We’re facing down hordes of biologically impossible creatures controlled and created by an entity unfathomably more powerful than anything we’ve ever seen before!”
I noticed just then that I had been slowly stalking towards him, the wrench trembling in my paw.
“And your main concern is your SPEHING CAREER!?” I shouted.
Even now, this asshole still blames me for something HE did to himself. It was infuriating that this selfish speh was mad at me for losing his job even though they were the ones who almost killed Malcos!
I was about to shout again until one of the other exterminators, a white Venlil, came by and slapped Treven in the back of the head; the blow was hard enough to send him stumbling. Before he was able to respond, his mouth was covered by their coworkers' paw to keep him from speaking. It felt somewhat good seeing Treven put in his place, but I was confused on why. It wasn’t until he moved away from Treven when he decided to stay quiet and marched towards me with an annoyed yet fearful expression in his swaying tail. I was grabbed by the wool around my neck and pulled down to his line of sight before he started loudly whispering.
“Are you trying to get us killed!? We are literally at the ground zero and your shouting might have given away our position!” He quietly exclaimed, “We already had to deal with a horde on our way into the city and lost almost everyone. The six you see used to be a group of over two hundred exterminators!”
My heart sank after realizing what I had done: Not only did I possibly make our presence known, but this small group before me used to be multiple station's worth of exterminators. I was at a loss for words at my cluelessness and kept my mouth shut after I was let go. The Venlil in white soon signaled everyone in the group to continue moving forward and to keep their eyes peeled.
As we continued moving through the streets of Dawn Creek, we eventually heard the crunching of bone and sound of flesh being torn off from around the corner. The noise sent a chill up my spine and was extremely discomforting. I glanced at the exterminators surrounding me and saw them show a more fearful expression than me. If it was true that this group used to consist of a hundred exterminators, then they likely bore witness to seeing their comrades be torn to shreds first hand. Seeing something like that would be hard to live down, especially when the people you love are the ones being mauled to death.
The thought of what these people went through to get here changed how I saw them for a moment. Knowing what he had to witness, I began to rethink how I saw them when we crossed paths. I felt bad for them for a moment until I heard that loud crunch again, but this time it was louder.
The leading exterminator looked around the corner before continuing down the street. It was strange how empty the town was considering it was crawling with infected just a claw prior. They might have found new hunting grounds since this place is absent from life, but considering one of them has already seen me and the group there should have been at least a pawful chasing after us by now. They know we’re all alive, yet refuse to take action. Something is going on and I have a feeling it might pop up soon.
The sound of crunching became progressively louder as we quietly walked. The leading exterminator raised a paw, then slowly peered around the corner where the sound had come from. He stiffened suddenly, his entire body froze up before desperately diving back behind cover. Another exterminator, the mute one I think, grabbed him by the arm before he could collapse. The leader walked up to them, careful to not make any sounds that could attract attention.
“What’s wrong? What did you see?” he whispered to the point man.
He simply pointed back towards the crunching sound as his arm shook with fear. The leader’s tail swished in annoyance as he moved to the corner. Curious for myself, I followed closely behind him to take a look at whatever was out of view. He shot me a look of annoyance when I brushed up against him, but he didn’t object to me seeing. We both peered around the building towards the street with my face almost sitting on top of his head. My breath hitched in my throat as I saw what was standing there: feasting on a Mazic in the middle of a trashed shop was a massive, grotesque, monstrosity of a Venlil. It stood over 5 tails [3 meters] tall with tendrils of red flesh that shot through its bare skin. The muscles on its body were so large it seemed like they were on the edge of bursting out of its skin, and its enormous paws looked like it could wrap around my head with ease; its legs looked like they were about to explode from the sheer mass held within them. Not only that, but what separated it from the other infected was its face: it was the only one I have seen so far that didn’t have a split face like the others. This one was different for some reason; regardless, I didn’t want to get this thing's attention.
Placing a paw on the leader's shoulder we made our way back to the rest of the group. One of the exterminators walked up to us.
“What’s happening?” she asked.
“There is some kind of super mutant up ahead, we need to find a new route,” the leader whispered back.
“Well where are we going?” I interjected, “all the shelters have been taken out.”
“Before we found you, we sent out a distress signal in hopes anyone will come for us,” The leader responded, “We never got a response so we focused on trying to find a way out.”
“Do any of you have a map so you know where you’re going?” I Inquired
“No, unfortunately. Our pads ran out of power half a claw ago and we don’t have any physical copies, so we don’t know which streets to follow” The leader replied solemnly.
“I lived here for years, so I might be able to help you escape. Just follow me.”
I stepped out from around the corner only to see that the same monster from earlier was now towering over me. I slowly turned my gaze up from its bare stomach and looked at its blood covered face: it bared its large, razor sharp teeth as it stared at me with its circular pupils. I could tell one thing by just looking that it wanted only one thing, to feast.
My heart jumped upon locking eyes with it. I slowly backed away as my whole body trembled with fear. I tried to speak to tell the others, but I was too focused on the beast before me.
“Tarlim? What’s wr-” he cut off, most likely from seeing the creature now stepping out from behind the corner…
Everyone else began backing away after laying their eyes on this thing. Everyone was silent for a few moments until one of the exterminators began running and screaming. When the spell broke, the monster leaned forward and roared at us, causing nearby rocks and windows to tremble from its immense volume. Within a split second, it charged forward with its size hiding its speed; we dove out of the way as it rushed towards the running exterminator. The leader and Mute grabbed their weapons and tried to shoot at the monster, but it wasn’t enough to slow it down. Charging forward at an impossible speed, it soon reached the fleeing exterminator and grabbed the screaming Venlil with its massive paw. With a sickening crunch, it bit down and tore off a chunk of his head. The screams soon turned into senseless noises before it took another bite. His body soon went limp after his brain was completely destroyed. Once he was finally dead, the beast quickly chewed through the rest of the body until there was nothing left. The mutant stood still for a moment, its wet panting the only sound on the empty street. We all stood still ourselves, staring at the monster in horror. Then, swiveling around on its foot, it turned to look at us. Its red pupils glistened with overwhelming bloodlust as it stared from afar. It reared its head back and roared again before charging at us. The rest of our herd showered the creature in a hail of bullets as I frantically looked around for a way out. Spotting an industrial plant down the street, I quickly ran towards it and pried the doors open. The heavy machinery would make it harder for the beast to maneuver, I hoped.
“Quick in here!” I shouted towards the others.
As soon as I shouted, I inadvertently got the creature’s attention. Locking its red pupils on me, it charged towards me. I ran away for dear life into the facility only to feel its paws grab my leg with its vice-like grip. Before I could even attempt to free myself, it threw me across the street like I was nothing. I spun in the air for a few seconds until I landed on top of one of the turned over cars.
Upon impact, I felt some of my ribs break as both glass and torn metal stabbed into my skin. I lifted one of my bloodied arms and saw multiple pieces of glass sticking out of my wool with some of them big enough to go through the bone. I tried to scream out to the others for help, but the pain I felt from just breathing alone was already too much to bear. I looked over at them as they began running away from the scene. I saw the beast get down on all fours before pouncing towards the group with great speed. Despite their distance apart, it was able to close that gap in less than a second. One by one, it killed and tore them asunder with its large, powerful claws and razor sharp teeth until there were only the mute and leader left.
I managed to fight through the pain and get up from the wreckage with blood still dripping from my wounds and flowing down my body. I took a deep breath and shouted as loud as I could in their direction. It stopped what it was doing and looked towards me from afar. It stood on its hind legs and looked at me with a somewhat surprised expression.
“HEY! OVER-” I was quickly cut off from coughing up blood as I fell to my hands and knees, “over here!”
The internal damage done was too severe for me to push myself any further than I already have, but I needed to give the others time to leave. I got myself back up and locked eyes with the mutant.
Right when I did that, it did something strange: rather than run, pounce, or even roar, it quietly walked up to me with its blood covered claws at its side. I was confused about what was happening and I didn’t know how to react. Should I attack, should I run, what could I do that wouldn’t provoke it? Once it was within range, I reacted impulsively and hit it in the face with my wrench. Although I was able to cause a slight bruise, its head didn’t move an inch and the wrench was now destroyed.
‘Oh speh’ I thought for a moment before getting grabbed by my neck and lifted into the air.
I struggled to set myself free as I repeatedly bashed the deformed wrench into its arm. I could feel my windpipe get actively crushed as it slowly tightened its grip. I eventually dropped the wrench and started doing whatever else I could to set myself free: I kicked, clawed, and hit the beast as hard as I could, but to no avail. As I reached the edge of passing out, I heard a voice.
“Tarlim, look at me,” it said calmly with a deep, raspy voice.
I looked around for a moment before hearing it again, but this time it was in front of me.
“I want you to look at me, Tarlim,” it said once again.
I soon realized where it was coming from and who was saying it once I looked at the mutated Venlil. It was that creature who was speaking.
“You did everything you could to try and get out alive, but you failed,” he said serenely “Now you’ll die knowing everyone you ever knew and cared about is gone.”
My eyes widened when it spoke. I tried to respond, but I wasn’t able to say a single word.
“I had fun chasing you and those exterminators, Tarlim, but now it's time to move on.”
Its mouth opened wide, revealing rows of razor sharp teeth layered on top of eachother. My vision was fading rapidly, and my body went limp as I accepted my fate. Just before I completely lost consciousness, I heard the faint roar of a ship's cannon and the crushing force around my neck vanished. I felt like I was sinking through an ocean as I fell to the ground, dull spikes of pain ripping through my shattered body. I tried to look up to see what had happened, but everything was too heavy, too dark

2023.06.09 18:57 Metadomino Finally finished all missions outside a few terraforming ones and wanted to share my thoughts and hear yours. *Some Spoilers*
https://preview.redd.it/xuoh401fn05b1.png?width=2856&format=png&auto=webp&s=8ac1fd7e55dd50937b31963370a47b5e3c92255a Finally finished every mission in the game aside from a few terraforming ones and wanted to share my thoughts
Some spoilers ahead:
- Tales of Avarice has by far, IMO, the best plot and rewards of any of the mission chains. You not only get to make a meaningful choice, get two amazing ships, explore an interesting new sector with unique mechanics, but you also get to fight a major faction and get a rep reset after you beat them. 10/10
- The Torus Aeternum mission is fairly interesting with its puzzles, but has the most hilarious writing in the game between the two AIs. Wish you could keep the AI to make the Geometric Owl unique. 8/10
- Fate of the Yaki: An actually challenging mission chain that not only sees actual development from your wingman, but also has you strike deep into Xenon controlled territory, give you impetus to liberate them. The reward is fantastic, lots of good mods, a 5 star pilot, a Syn, as well as claiming a very significant central sector chain with excellent resources that can serve as the core of your empire. 8/10
- Split Storyline: You not only have to spend over 1.3 Billion, do not any really meaningful rewards apart from 10 skins and having the split stop warring with the Argon, most of the time all of Zyarth is destroyed by Xenon so they become a weak opponent. As well there is no rep reset once they transfer over to Rhulk, which is strange. As for the slavery sub-plot which could have been interesting, it is seriously sidelined. 4/10
- Paranid Civil War: Same as Split, apart from the interesting puzzle mission that gives you much greater insight into the Paranid culture, the ending ends on a whimper. You spend over 500mil to build them a palace station, then 1 Billion More to get them to unify and all you get is 10 skins. I need this on a t-shirt: I stopped a holy war and all I got was 10 skins. Yes, sending them to war with the Argon or Teladi or everyone is good for business, but by that time, money is useless to the player anyway. 3/10
- Empyrean Curs: would be 10/10 but it just ENDS so 5/10
- Queendom of Boron: same as above, feels like an extended tutorial. Highway battle was a lot of fun. There aren't even any Boron Trade Guild missions etc. Everything else about the Boron is fantastic. Would be 10/10 but cut in half: 5/10
- Hatikvah Trade Revolution: Forgettable. I'm also not a fan of Dal. 2/10
- Covert Ops: An average mission set that is elevated by the fairly interesting reward option. Pitting the Argon and Antigone against the Terrans is just fun to watch. Delilah actually has personality, which I could recruit her to replace Dal. 6/10
- Teladi storyline ????: Why is there no Teladi Story outside your interaction with MIN in the Empyrean Curs plot. They are a very interesting faction who got entirely shafted. Why can't we help elevate a poor penilesssss Teladi to CEO status so he can make great profitsssss?
- Terraforming General Notes: I have not finished all of them, but the rewards are unbelievably unbalanced. Terraforming Scale Plate, not only unlock rep and resettles pirates. It also give you lots of heavily modded ships and powerful crew. All the while, you terraform Atiya's misfortune and Antigone just builds another shipyard. Or 18 Billion, where you get a little pat on the bum. One way to change this is that for every planet terraformed, you can craft one of the Purple Mods from basic resources or something. Considering this is very endgame stuff.
- One of the smaller mission worth a mention is the one to get the Casino. I think, the game to do more with the racing aspect. There should be other ships, they should shoot you, you them etc.
Anyway, the game is fantastic. I had an incredible time playing. Thank you Egosoft.

2023.06.09 18:05 UnDead_Ted The Psychology of Temptation: A Lesson in Pastoral Wisdom from James Ross Blackburn
| 06/09/2023 One of the great blessings of the epistles is being able to watch the writers pastor their people. Yes, the epistles are full of theology, but they are written by and large to specific persons or people, with particular pastoral concerns in mind. What we have, then, are not just treatises on the character of the Gospel, but windows into the dealings of pastors with their people. We have much to learn on both counts. The epistle of James is full of pastoral wisdom, both for ourselves and for those we serve. Of course, these go together. As Paul reminded Timothy, “Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers” ( 1 Tim 4:16). The following will look at what we might call a psychology of temptation, a teaching of extraordinary perception and precision from James to his people, given so that they might stand faithfully in the face of temptation. HOW SIN WORKS The wages of sin is death. That is apparent, if we have eyes to see. Adultery destroys marriages. Gluttony degrades one’s health—mentally, spiritually, and physically. Covetousness constricts the heart, making one increasingly unable to love. Lying destroys trust, and therefore destroys relationships. This much is plain. It is easy to see sin for what it is when we see its effects down the road, when the marriage is irrecoverable, the heart attack has occurred, or the job has been lost. What is not so apparent is how we get to this point. When advanced, it is apparent that sin brings forth death. When in its embryonic stages, it is not so apparent. Sin begins imperceptibly, growing until it can be seen for what it is. In other words, great sin doesn’t just happen in a moment, but over time. James gives us an insightful account of how sin works in James 1:12-18: Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. James begins with a tremendous encouragement. Interestingly, the Greek word for trial in James 1:12 has the same root as the words for temptation in the rest of the passage. Why the ESV chose to translate the word differently ( unlike, for example, the KJV, which translated the root consistently) I don’t know. However, we are on good grounds to read the verse as follows: “ Blessed is the man who remains steadfast when faced with temptation, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” The encouragement is threefold. First, the Lord will reward those who stand when tempted. Even as it presents an opportunity for sin, temptation brings opportunities for faithfulness, growth, and reward, as James indicates at the beginning of his letter ( James 1:2-4). Secondly, we are to expect temptation. Being tempted does not mean that we are sinful, weak, or that we have done something wrong. Rather, experiencing temptation is normal. Even Jesus was tempted, yet remained without sin. Finally, James implies that withstanding temptation and loving God are one. In other words, those who love God are those who withstand temptation. From the outset, James hints at the means of dealing with temptation—believing in the goodness of God. We’ll return to this later. Shifting Blame James then makes a stark and important claim: God does not tempt. On the surface, this may not seem necessary to say, for who when tempted blames God? Actually, it is more common than you might think. We see it as far back as Eden, when Adam, seeking to justify himself after eating the fruit, told God “ The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate” ( Gen 3:12). By reminding God that God gave him the woman who gave him the fruit, Adam blames both Eve and God. In other words, Adam justifies himself by citing the circumstances of his sin. And, implicitly, the God of his circumstances. That begins to feel more familiar. Legion are the ways in which we blame others for our sin. “ If she hadn’t said that….” “ If he were less selfish and more considerate….” “ If pornography wasn’t so available….” “If I only had more money….” In other words, rather than looking to ourselves, we are quick to blame the circumstances of our sin for our sin. In so doing, we blame God. Rather than giving thanks in all circumstances ( 1 Thess 5:17), we blame the author of our circumstances. Or, similarly, we blame who God made us to be. Excuses like “ he’s only human,” or “ boys will be boys” locate our sin not in our rebellion, but in our humanity, thereby implicitly blaming God. Blaming ensures we will never get to the root of the problem, for in blaming we fail to identify the source. Just like the doctor who misdiagnoses the cause of a disease cannot expect his patient to recover, so for the one who misdiagnoses the root of sin. Yielding to Desire What is that source? James is clear: “each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.” Here we get to the root. Temptation draws its strength from desire. This explains why not everyone is faced with the same temptations. The lure of internet pornography is a serious temptation for one man, while for another it is not. Both have the same access, only one is tempted. What is the difference? James would say that the difference is desire. The opportunity to gossip exists for all, yet some gossip and others do not. Why is this? Some want to, others do not. Importantly, James does not say that desire is sin. Rather, he says that desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin. James here uses the analogy of sex and childbearing to illustrate how this works. First, there is conception, which occurs when a woman gives herself to a man. As in conception, desire must be received, even embraced. Said differently, consent must be given for desire to be conceived. To return to the example of sexual sin, what happens when a married man sees another woman and is attracted to her? How does he respond to the temptation? Does he look a second time, or does he divert his eyes? Desire is conceived in the second look. What of a married woman who is tempted to harbor disrespectful thoughts of her husband, or romanticized thoughts of another man? Desire is conceived in the lingering. Herein lie the beginnings of sin. Of course, sin in its early stages is undetectable, and it is certainly hidden, perhaps even from the sinner himself. Over time, however, sin grows—little by little, day by day, thought by thought, act by act—until it is birthed, and then seen for what it is. Yet even at this point, sin hasn’t reached the height of its destructiveness. A student can cheat and get away with it for a season, and in fact can benefit from it as he seeks to get ahead in his class. But as he makes peace with dishonesty, it seeps into other areas of his life—his friendships, his job, his marriage. Having begun with an act of dishonesty, he has become dishonest. And things begin to fall apart. While sin can be indulged for a time when its effects are not fully apparent, there will come a time when his friends don’t trust him, he is charged with embezzling, and his marriage ends. At this point, it becomes plain that sin really does bring forth death. That which we gave quarter to in its beginnings has grown to devour us in the end. The Scriptures simply tell us to flee. Examples abound: “ Flee from sexual immorality” ( 1 Cor 6:18), “ flee from idolatry” ( 1 Cor 10:14), “ flee youthful passions” ( 2 Tim 2:22). We don’t trifle with temptation, we don’t make allowances, and we don’t take refuge in the fact that others aren’t bothered. Like Joseph, who fled Potiphar’s wife even to the point of leaving his garment, we flee. We either flee temptation, or we receive it. Our refusal to flee means we have already decided. WHAT WE MUST KNOW As a wise and caring pastor, having shown both the subtle beginnings and the tragic consequences of sin, James turns to the solution. Let me mention two things. The Character of Deception First, he warns against deception: “ Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.” This warning also takes us back to Eden. What enticed Eve to eat the fruit but deception, in this case the serpent’s insinuation that every good and perfect gift did not come from God? The serpent’s great lie was that the good life could be found apart from God and his ways. In effect, the serpent attacked God’s character by saying that He was not good, and therefore sought to deny good gifts to Adam and Eve. This same lie is at the root of sin today. Years ago, upon leaving a church I had served for a summer, the minister ( who had become a dear friend and mentor) gave me a hug, looked me in the eyes, and sent me off with words I have never forgotten: “Always remember that Satan wraps his temptations in pretty packages.” I have found that to be true. Satan wants to be seen as the giver of good gifts. Satan’s gifts, of course, are not what they appear, for what is attractively offered brings about death when received. This is true of all manner of sin—sexual sin, gossip, the satisfaction of speaking unkindly, holding onto a grudge, or hoarding money. James, therefore, makes it clear that the God whose goodness we are tempted to doubt is One who gives good and perfect gifts. And He does not change. In the end, James calls us to trust God, and therefore to trust His ways are good. It is no coincidence that James goes on to speak of God’s law as “the law of liberty.” James understands that, despite what Satan might lead us to believe, the law of God is meant for freedom, not bondage. Being convinced of God’s goodness helps us deal with our wayward desires that make temptation so powerful. Thanks be to God, we are not victims of our own desires. In this “ follow your heart” world, we can learn to lead our hearts. For instance, the Proverbs call us to “ Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” ( Prov 4:23). How do we do this? The Scriptures give much guidance here, but let me mention several of Jesus’ sayings. When Jesus says “ where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” ( Luke 12:34), he suggests we can lead our hearts through how we spend or invest money. When he says “ out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks” ( Luke 6:45), he implies that we can guide our heart by speaking in a way that is gracious and edifying. When he says “ Your eye is the lamp of your body” ( Luke 11:34), he suggests that we can shape our desires by what we allow ourselves to behold. A man who gazes upon his wife alone, never allowing himself to gaze upon another woman, will find that his desires for pornography or fantasy begin to fade. A selfish man can become generous by practicing generosity, whether he feels like it or not. Perhaps this is not all we can do, but it is something we must do. In the end, shaping our desires is about the transformation of the heart: “ Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart” ( Psalm 37:4), the implication being that, as we delight in the Lord, he transforms our desires into ones that he can fulfill. It is possible to get out in front of temptation by seeking to form, or re-form, our desires. But this will only happen to the extent that we believe God is for us, and that His ways are life and peace. Loving the Beloved Secondly, as he warns them against deception, James reminds his people of who they are, and of God’s disposition toward them. He addresses them tenderly—“ my beloved brothers.” Exactly who loves them? God? James himself? I suspect the answer ( which may be intentionally ambiguous) is both. As a pastor, James is genuine in his love for his people. It is precisely the failure to love their people that disqualified the shepherds in the Old Testament and the Pharisees in the New ( Ezek 34; John 10). But James is certainly speaking of God as well, because in the very next sentence he speaks of God as the Father who gives good gifts. For that’s what fathers who love their children do. This is crucial, for James knows, as Paul did, that God’s kindness leads us to repentance. For the people to receive James’ admonition as from God, they must know that James loves them and, even more, that God himself loves them. This leads to the final point. James reminds us that the crown of life, given to those who resist temptation, is given to those who love God. As mentioned above, James draws a parallel—those who resist temptation are those who love God. Here we get to the root of the issue, our love for God. The Scriptures are clear that a choice must be made, for one cannot love God and sin at the same time: “ If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” ( 1 John 2:15), “ you cannot serve God and money” ( Luke 16:13), “ friendship with the world is enmity with God” ( James 4:4). How do we love God? By knowing who He is, and in particular who He is for us. As noted above, James speaks to his people as those whom God loves. James makes this explicit later in his letter when he writes in James 5:8-11: Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful. In the end, it is a call to establish their hearts by remembering the character of God, who was the strength of the prophets before them. James picks up on this by assuring the people that the Lord is compassionate and merciful, alluding to the most complete description of the Lord’s character to be found anywhere in the Bible: “ The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…” ( Exod 34:6; cf. Num 14:18; Psalms 86:15; 103:8; 145:8), the same description used of Jesus, the one “full of grace and truth” ( John 1:14). It is well known that James does not speak overmuch of the love of God, or speak explicitly of the death and resurrection of Jesus for our sins. Why he does not isn’t exactly clear to me, save that James wrote what he felt he needed to write to his people. After all, a pastor can’t say everything at once, nor is it usually wise or appropriate to try. Nevertheless, we see implied in James what John says explicitly: “ We love because he first loved us” ( 1 John 4:19). And we know that because He is the giver of every good and perfect gift, even the gift of His Son. W Ross Blackburn Is the Rector at Christ the King Anglican Fellowship in Boone, NC. 2023.06.09 17:24 Realmfire Aegis fleet 04
**DEEP SPACE AEGIS FLEET HQ, AEGIS STATION, EARTH**
*the office of Grand Admiral Constantius* “Sir, Captain Ryker’s company is now en route to DSO 7. Additionally, Admiral Johnathan Herrion has requested information about the status of his old flotilla. It appears he heard about the recent incident to which you dispatched the Vallhalla”
“Thank you Aida, tell Admiral Herrion that his suggestion has been pushed through”
“Will do sir”
**DSO 7**
*two days later* *Captain Ryker steps off the dropship to see his men already checking their gear in the hanger. The quiet hustle of the operators ensuring their gear is a hundred percent operational didnt draw his attention. Instead it was the group of officers, quickly approaching his company. He quickly moved towards the approaching group of officers and his command staff joined him.* “Captain Ryker, My name is Admiral Herrion. Ill be your naval liason on this op”
“An Admiral as a liaison, Captain this is unheard of” *1SG Harris said* “well son, these are hard times. The Aegis Protocol is soon to go into effect, so its all hands on deck these days.” was the Admiral’s reply” “Well sir” said Captain Ryker “Thank you for being our liaison. I heard about your old task force. Is this really happening sir?” “Yes it is captain, and you’d be wise to steel yourself for what you see in that station. We are picking up.. Massive amounts of dark matter radiating from the station. Your company is to gain entry to the station and try to find out whatever information you can about this station.” “Roger that sir. Is there any specific reason an army unit was called up over a naval special forces unit?”
“Its because the naval special warfare program has massively deteriorated. Politicians have their hands all over it these days. Carrying on, your company has to be ready in the next half hour, you will be rendezvousing with a coast guard team that claims to have found an access point”
*half an hour later, on the hull of the ring station. 200 operators land on the station as their boots magnetically lock to the hull. As they make their way towards the beacon the coast guard team dropped, Captain Ryker gets the feeling something may be off, and pushes up to the front. As he comes across the beacon, but sees none of the coast guard crew. Where they would be he sees a hole cut into the station, and then.. A coast guard helmet drifts out.. Trailing blood. As he gets closer he notices.. There is still a head in the helmet. He motions for Demon company to halt and spread out around the hole. The first team moves to enter the hole. After a few seconds the all clear is given and Ryker enters. He looks and sees a gruesome sight- the coast guard team was.. Brutally killed. They appear to have been sliced apart. As more operators begin entering the chamber one of the squad leaders notices a door, and 2 of his men join him in breaching the door. The first soldier through the door stops as she sees it. This section of the station was a massive hanger, and inside was a 2 kilometer long ship, that appeared to have been blown apart. It lay in 2 pieces. Around it were dozens of small craft drifting, also damaged. Whatever happened here… was a massacre. As the company continued to clear the station they found more artifacts, more signs there was once a battle here. But no sign of bodies- or the killers of the coast gaurd crew.
It took 5 hours before they found the control chamber. There was a massive map in the control chamber that showed there were infact dozens of control chambers, and other sections like this one that were currently inaccessible. However there was a noted difference in this section, it had a room called “the gate room”. A team was dispatched to investigate, and found that in the center of the room was a large circular object, the center of the object was blue and appeared to be.. Rippling? The soldiers didnt have time to analyze it as an 8 foot tall being stepped through it. As he appeared suddenly the room was drenched in darkness. The being raised a weapon of some kind, and fired several shots, shredding the first soldier and heavily injuring the second. The soldiers kept shooting and shooting at this being with little to no effect on it, as more of those entities began coming through the portal. The soldiers were able to send out a warning and captain Ryker ordered a full retreat. In 45 minutes half the company made it back to the entranceway, as the other half were ambushed and cut down. Captain Ryker the men out of the station as dropships were on their way to pick them up. Captain Ryker was one of the last to get aboard the dropships. As they sped off he noticed the station begin activating. He quickly got a headcount, 78 of his men had escaped, meaning over half of his men were dead
When the station fully activated it became apparent it was a massive portal. The aegis fleet in position moved to engage as enemy ships began pouring through. This wasnt just an incursion this was a full scale invasion, and demon company had failed to stop it. The dropships docked with a transport ship and the ship jumped away, making random jumps to ensure they werent followed before reporting to earth*
**UNIFIED COLONIES SENATE BUILDING, EARTH**
*the senate was in chaos. News of hostile contact had made its way to the senate fairly fast. And officially the military had petitioned to put in play the highly classified Aegis protocol, a protocol that would see humanity pull back from its current missions to defend its own borders. A protocol that would isolate humanity from the rest of the galaxy. It was put into play less than an hour after it landed on the senate floor.
Hey all, realmfire here. This one is my last story for a while. But! More will come when i get back. Peace all and see you in a couple months.

2023.06.09 14:11 LinguoBuxo 🥂 Celebrating 8000 audiobooks 🎉 - 🎊 Reaching officially v. 1.0 - and some collection trivia
There are many public or private libraries in this world. And some of them are there to fill a purpose .. Libraries of study materials for a university ... Library of the US Congress ... Libraries of government records all over the world ... Libraries of vintage books (Aziraphale had one of those) and so on..
... Well the library I keep is --
To help people learn new languages (or ...
keep 'em alive once learned)
To this end, the library has certain guiding rules.. One of them being that
only authors that have had international success are included. Nobody else. Had we been collecting every audiobook that passed us by, we'd be at maybe 300.000 books by now,
waist deep in hard drives.
And a weird point of fact is, the +-90 authors collected here, have written a sum total of 1600 books. Or at least that's the number of their recordings that can be found in English..
And so the 8.000 volumes milestone is a MAJOR one, because 1600 times 5 iiissss.. 8k!
Yaaahooo!!! ---
So, some basic facts and figures about the collection / language school with books in it .-)
- 8000 audiobooks kept \*
- Just over 90 authors collected exclusively
- Audiobooks in 71 languages available
- Some e-books also kept - presently over 2.700 PDFs in storage *\*
- Total listening time - Over 74.500 hours
- There's 16 authors, of which we have 100 or more recordings
- There's 18 tongues, in which we have 100 or more recordings
- In 15 tongues we have over 1.000 hours of listening time
- Russian is the second most "stuffed" language - over 700 mp3s - over 7950 hours
- The book with the most language versions we hold is: Exupéry's Le Petit Prince - 48 versions
- Apart from EN, the top 6 languages read as follows: RU, PO, DE, CS, SP, BPO
- The 5 authors of which we have the most recordings of are: Doyle's Holmes, Agatha Christie, Stephen King, Jules Verne and Sir Terry Pratchett, GNU.
- There's 206 book titles which we have in 10 or more recordings **\*
- There's 11 books which we have in 30+ language versions
- There's 5 books which we have in 40 or more tongues
- Among our top authors, as far as the language diversity goes are: Orwell, Christie, Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, Hemingway, Coelho, Napoleon Hill, Kiyosaki, Jules Verne and J.K.R.
- If one listed the world top languages by speakers, then in the top 20 languages by size, we hold a lump sum of 4.345 recordings.
- We have SOME audiobook title in a group of languages whose L1+L2 speakers number: 5.344 billion. EEeeeehhh. "Not great, not terrible."
- The most populous independent language we have jack shit in iiiiisss: Javanese - 68M speakers
- The most populous dialect we have eine große Scheiße in is Yue Chinese
Some other facts, details and trivia
- We have a webpage in development, it's having plumbers in right now.
- In the meantime, the main communication channels are either chat/dm here or email.
- Our strict policy is One Book One MP3 - even if the original book has been split into several volumes.. an example of this which spring to mind is Game of Thrones ... which for instance in FR had been dissected into 3 or more books and sold separately, to milk people. Well, we don't do that.
- Despite the fact that we have a strict rule about the authors we collect, we sometimes perform custom searches... such as "Metro 2033 in French?" for instance... but only on demand and ... it's not free. Decently priced, but not free.
- There are one or two authors we have searched for on demand, and decided to keep 'em afterwards, since they 1) write decent enough stuff but most importantly .. 2) since we found them in 5+ languages since. One of these authors, as an example, is Franz Kafka, writing originally in Deutsch, with his 4 major books... 2 of which we have in over 20 language variations. Decent.
- Then again, there are authors which we could have included in our library, because they have been famous internationally, but we flat out refused to, usually because their works are either boring as fuck, which would somewhat defeat the motivation behind this collection, or by the virtue of being too divisive in nature. Meaning some people love 'em, and some people wouldn't touch their stuff with a 30 foot barge pole. Some notable examples being.. for instance the whole stinkin' lot of philosophers, from Alzheimer, through Camus all the way to Schopenhauer and Marx. GTFO the lotta 'em. Or people like Cervantes, Schicklgruber, E.L. James, Stephenie Meyer, Anne Frank, or Danielle Steel, to name a few.
... That's long 'nuff for one post.. There will be more interesting stuff posted in a week maybe, drop by again for more interesting news from the AudioBux team.
:) Cheerio!
Notes:
\* - All the books we have, had been available on the Public Domain at one point or another - thus available
to everybody during that timeframe, however brief it may have been
*\* - E-books are not our main focus, but we do keep some. There's one potential trouble tho. In a solid chunk of the languages we keep, we cannot keep tabs on... or even verify, if the version of the translation of that specific pdf
IS actually the one that's been recorded in audio. Some books had gone quite a few version of translations for various reasons. And so we can have
A copy of the e-book and
An audiobook... If they match is sometimes anyone's guess.
**\* - ...but some of the recordings in these 206 are there twice .. for instance performances with full cast - so excluding those we have 193 books in 10 unique language versions

2023.06.09 13:32 wardXn 35 day solo itinerary check across western Honshu, Shikoku, Osaka/Kyoto, Kanazawa and Tokyo
Hello, I would like to seek fellow redditors opinions, input and recommendation on how I could better finetune my itinerary better. There's only so much I can think of, and plan as an individual, but with everyone's input and comments I can further refine and enhance the travel experience before I set foot into Japan. Do forgive me in advance for the theorycrafting wall of text.
I know it may be difficult to review the itinerary, so to make the review easier I have broken the itinerary down into specific sub-groups e.g. Shikoku, Kinki etc. Specific questions that I have are bolded.
Thank you in advance for taking your time to provide your opinions!
-------------
Baseline information
- 32M, average fitness, solo traveller
- Public transport only (challenge); I have a driver's license but I have not drove a car for god knows how long so I would prefer not to test it against the green hills of Shikoku
- Interest: anime (select few), experience autumn/nature, visiting secluded spots, and just trying random stuff
- JP language skill: rudimentary at best (N4), but I will not shy away from speaking in simple, broken japanese or use a translator to communicate. Reading/interpreting kanji is not a problem (in general).
- Visit history: Visited twice (once to Hokkaido for ~8 days, and once toKyoto and Osaka for 8 days
- Will probably travel around with a (slightly) oversized luggage at ~166cm (A+B+C), that’s the only one I have with me. This will be a problem on the Shinkansen (but hopefully not so much on sightseeing trains/limited expresses).
- Will be visiting during (almost) peak autumn at 11 November, and will depart on the 16th of December
- Jet lag is unlikely to be a problem (1h time difference), but nevertheless I will maintain a low tempo on the first day to acclimatize to the environment
- Only thing firmed as of now is the air ticket, everything else is up in the air.
- I like planning/min-maxing to some degree, though I recognize that I may not fulfill all objectives during the trip and I am totally ok with that [its just a guideline or framework to give the holiday some structure, that’s all.] FWIW, I personally like traveling at a high tempo pace like some japanese travel show do (e.g. ローカル路線バス乗り継ぎの旅)
Specific goals/objective:
- Experience Shikoku in autumn (specifically the views at Iya Valley) and in other prefectures (thus making nature sightseeing more of a priority this time round)
- Experience Kanazawa for anime stuff
- Experience the Shimanami Kaido in full (including any sightseeing spots in between the 6 island chains)
- Bonus - try as many sightseeing trains as possible.
- Bonus - if weather, time and schedule permits, try skiing as an option in Nagano.
- Bonus - stay in as many onsen ryokans as possible, without breaking the bank.
Locked-in prefectures [i.e. I will definitely go to those prefectures no matter what]:
- Shikoku (as per above objective)
- Hiroshima (because its on the opposite end of the Shimanami Kaido)
- Kanazawa (for anime related reason)
- Tokyo (that is my starting and end point so it has to be included by default)
All other prefectures are basically
float i.e. I am open to consider dropping said itinerary for something else based on your suggestion that aligns with my preferences/interest. Most of the other locations I added are prefectures that are often next to each other, or well-connected (apart from the initial Tokyo Kagawa jump via Sunrise Seto/Shinkansen).
Wait-list prefectures (prefectures that I want to go, but I don’t think I can realistically fit in without dropping other locations):
- Snow skiing at Nagano (depending on how cooperative the weather is in early-ish December (would 2 days be sufficient?))
- Ehime, Kochi expansion [spend 1-3 more days]
- Izu Peninsula (~2 days, via Saphir Odoriko)
- Nagoya + lower Nagano (Kiso Valley) (~3 days)
- Ishikawa expansion [1 extra day at Kaga]
I am open to dropping a few days in Tokyo/Osaka etc to make that trade off [currently kept 3 days free for further development]. Alternatively, if the planning can be better optimized based on your inputs I might be able to do one of those without compromising on the base set. I would like to hear your opinion on what locations you would drop in the itinerary to make time for one of the above.
General planning philosophy:
- My itineary adopts a breadth approach (cover as much area as I can humanely possible without rushing/touch-and-go) as opposed to depth (i.e. spending much more time within Shikoku than what I allocated); though I would be open to considering more days at selected locations if you have strong recommendations. My thought is to experience how different autumn is at various parts of the country (if possible), and maybe winter too (to a certain degree).
- Due to the nature of my travel, I note that luggage logistics is a critical consideration when moving between prefectures; my thought is to park that luggage at the next hotel as quickly as possible so that I can free myself for sightseeing within the vicinity, or leave the luggage at the hotel after I check out until I am ready to travel to the next location. I will need to send (quite a fair bit of) emails to the hotels to confirm on this prior to booking.
- I will attempt to minimize transit time between prefectures to no more than 2~3 hours a day to avoid having excessively long transport days (except the initial Tokyo Kagawa jump).
- Because of the long trip, I will also need to factor a bit of downtime at night for administrative stuff (e.g. catching up a little bit on work, laundry etc).
---------
Shikoku (~7 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- I will need to exploit Limited Express trains as much as possible to minimize downtime between the 4 prefectures. Fortunately, for the most part these train frequencies are almost hourly, thus missing one train isnt too deadly consequence-wise.
- The transfer between Kochi and Ehime [Matsuyama] is oddly quicker via express bus as opposed to trains (!)
- For Kochi, my opinion is that it is best explored on car instead of public transport [it’s a really wide prefecture]; I feel that 1 day may not do it justice, but it is probably adequate for exploring the city centre as a whole.
- There's a fair bit of uncertainties while planning this leg so I would deeply appreciate any advice you may have.
- This current iteration is unable to weave in the Shikoku Mannaka Sennen Monogatari sightseeing train [四国まんなか千年ものがたり] ; if you people think its something not to be missed do let me know and I will reshuffle my timetable as such.
Day 0: Tokyo Kagawa (Sunrise Seto) [Saturday, 11 Nov]
- Touch down at Narita at 1720hours
- Transfer to Tokyo Station via NEX or Skyliner
- Settle administrative matters at the Midori-no-Maruguchi (e.g. get all the booked tickets etc from JR Pass, for Shinkansen and all other sightseeing trains) at Tokyo Station.
- IF Sunrise Seto ticket is obtained via the JR West portal booking, chill till 2200 and take Sunrise Seto to reach Kagawa (Takamatsu) at 0700 the next day. Try to snag the ticket online (likely via the japanese portal since there's no option to buy Solo Deluxe through the english/international website. Otherwise, compromise and go for Single)
- IF Sunrise Seto ticket is NOT obtained, proceed to take the furthest possible Shinkansen westwards (probably Okayama) and rest for the night.
Day 1: Kagawa (Takamatsu) [Sunday, 12 Nov]
- Chill around Takamatsu. Drop luggage at coin locker OR the hotel (near JR Takamatsu ideally)
- Look at whats left of Takamatsu Castle en route to the port.
- Day trip to Naoshima or Teshima to visit the art museums (Chichu Art Museum, Lee Ufan Museum etc).
- Ritsuin Garden in the evening (closes 1830)
- Find an eatery with Sanuki Udon for dinner if possible.
Day 2: Kagawa (Kotohira) Tokushima (Iya Valley) [Monday, 13 Nov]
- Morning trip from Takamatsu to Kotohira (either via JR or Kotoden). Visit Kotohiragu [includes inner shrine] and Kanamaruza Theater
- Return to Kotohira to pick up luggage, transit to Oboke via Limited Express Shimanto [Takamatsu Tadotsu Oboke]
- Retire at a local hotel around Oboke. If time permits, take the chance to explore around Oboke Gorge itself.
Day 3: Tokushima (Iya Valley) [Tuesday, 14 Nov]
[Post-research note: I realized that there is NO public transport to Mount Tsurugi on a weekday. I will have to rent a taxi direct to Mount Tsurugi, make the 'climb', then thereafter take the taxi down to the other attractions. I am inclined to just go full hog on the private taxi and rent it (almost the whole day, probably 7~8 hours for 4300yen/hour) to save the trouble. Otherwise, I will need to hike downhill which can be rather rough since its just a single lane road (looking at nearly 10++ km) so I think it wise not to penny pinch in the interest of both time and safety.] Spend the day at Iya Valley.
- Take a taxi after breakfast to zip to Mount Tsurugi and speedrun it to the mountain peak (aka using the chairlift to speedrun a good chunk of the mountain) about 2.5 hours ~ 3 hours as per the Iya Valley guide
- Taxi from Mount Tsurugi chairlift down to Oku-Iya Niju Kazuraashi and cross it (~1 hour estimate)
- Taxi down to visit the mannequins/scarecrows at Nagoro Village (~3km downhill from Oku-Iya). (~1 hour estimate)
- Check out the Peeing Boy Statue (~0.5 hour estimate [its just looking at the statue that is overlooking the entire gorge is it not?])
- Cross the outer vine bridge Iya-no-Kazurabashi (~1 hour estimate)
- Taxi back to Oboke, and retire for the day (~0.5 hour estimate, thus looking at about ~8 hours taxi rental total, with some leeway for lunch break)
Day 4: Tokushima (Iya Valley) Kochi (Kochi) [Wednesday, 15 Nov]
- Transit from Iya Valley [Oboke] to Kochi via Limited Express Shimanto (again) after breakfast. (~1 hour transit)
- Park luggage at hotel [ideally near JR Kochi Station], then proceed to mill around Kochi, visiting places such as Kochi Castle [高知城] and Harimaya Bridge[はりまや橋]
- Transit to Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum [高知県立坂本龍馬記念館] via local bus which is also near Katsumatsura Beach incidentally. Chill at Katsumatsura Beach in the evening
- Return to JR Kochi, dinnesupper at Hirome Market (ideally to try out Kochi's speciality seared bonito). [is visiting the market more preferable during lunch OR dinner?]
Day 5: Kochi (Kochi) Ehime (Imabari) [Thursday, 16 Nov]
- Complete any remaining items in Kochi in the morning, then transit to Imabari via train (Kochi Tadotsu Imabari), via Limited Express Shimanto (yet again!) and Ishidzuchi**[TBC: this might be better done via highway bus instead which is faster at ~2-3 hours]**
- Drop luggage at Imabari for the next 2 days, either at Sunrise Itoyama OR Cycle no Ie. [both are well positioned for the Shimanami Kaido, and are also one of the selected hotels eligible for the Sagawa luggage transfer.] Ideally done just around lunch time, so that there's still the better half of the day to explore Imabari.
- Spend the remainder of the day visiting Imabari Castle (closes 1700) and Towel Museum (slightly out of the way) (closes 1800) [TBC: I note this place is quite out of the way from Imabari itself, even the JP website suggests taking a taxi (!) there from the nearby train station. Might have to drop this).
- Attempt to try some Ehime-related food specialties e.g. Taimeshi (Sea Bream), Ehime oranges, Champon for the next 2 days
Day 6: Ehime (Matsuyama / Imabari) [Friday, 17 Nov]
- Take the Limited express train Ishidzuchi to Matsuyama day tripping. (~1h one-way).
- Explore Matsuyama Castle, and the nearby Matsuyama Ropeway Shopping Street
- Visit Shiki Memorial Museum
- Visit Dogo Onsen [and attempt to soak in the waters if possible].
- Also consider looking at Ishiteji (石手寺) beside Dogo Onsen.
- Bonus: Subject to train schedule, if possible, attempt to secure tickets for the Iyonada Sightseeing Train (伊予灘物語), Futami leg [双海ふたみ 編] , and also visit JR Shimonada Station (JR下灘駅) at the same time.
- Bonus: visit Yawatahama Port where the movie Suzume took reference from,
- Return to Imabari via the same Limited express Ishidzuchi and retire for the night.
Day 7: Ehime (Imabari) Hiroshima (Shinamani Kaido) [Saturday, 18 Nov]
I am of the opinion that 1 day in Shimanami Kaido is adequate if I attempt just the main route which is about 80km [as a test run, I did 70km and finished it within 6-7 hours with lunch breaks included]. For now I will plan for two full days, however should I truncate it down to one day later, I will add an extra day to either explore Matsuyama or Okayama.
- Start off at Sunrise Itoyama [watch the sunrise, have breakfast here, cafeteria opens at 0700, rental opens at 0800] OR Cycle no Ie. Do paperwork to send luggage over to the next accomodation via Sagawa.
- I will (probably) follow the recommended 'extended' route on Cycle no Ie's website and do the following:
- Take the west coast for Oshima (~13km) and cross to Hakatajima, with possible stop on:
- Mount Kiro Observatory Point [I am aware that there's a steep incline so this would be contingent on my physical/mental status by then].
- Nagahama Beach
- Take the coastal route for Hakatajima (~17km) and cross to Omishima and enjoy the coastal scenery
- Take the coastal route (again) for Omishima (~41km) (or lesser depending on how I'm feeling at that point) , with possible stop on:
- -TBC: Okunoshima (there is apparently a ferry route to the well-known rabbit island via Omishima port. Not sure if anyone else have tried this particular route and if this is a better approach than going through Tadano-umi (though I would acknowledge that there's historical stuff to visit in nearby Takehara), and I would not be able to buy rabbit food in advance).[Based on Google Earth estimate, its about 3km for the entire island loop - seems doable within 2 hours to tour the poison gas museum with a bike and pet some rabbits).
- Oyamazumi Shrine Treasure Museum
- End the day at WAKKA (Omishima) OR Guesthouse NEST / Soil Setoda (Ikuchijima) just beside Kousanji / The Hill of Hope (closes 1700). If possible, visit before closing, otherwise defer to next day.
- Try the ice cream at Dolce at Ikuchijima if possible.
- Bonus: if for some reason I am still ahead of time at this juncture (<1500), proceed to finish Innoshima and Mukaishima, then take a ferry to backtrack to Wakka/Soil Setoda or cycle back (last boat is ~1700) and rest; however, the next day I will zip straight to Onomichi via ferry after breakfast.
--------
Hiroshima + Yamaguchi (~4 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- Onomichi is a pretty good base to jump to Okayama to explore Okayama, Kurashiki or Tomonoura with the Shinkansen accessibility, but it is impossible to cover them all within a single day. If I finish the Shimanami Kaido within a single day or finish it early on the second day, I will have that extra time to visit those.
- There's another sightseeing train etSETOra from Onomichi to Hiroshima but it only operates on Monday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday. For now the schedule could fit the train timetable pretty nicely.
- Would anyone suggest visiting Miyajima in the morning or in the evening? This would help me determine the order for the Kintaikyo Bridge/Miyajima day trip. Watching the sunset at either destination is pretty good in my books.
Day 8: Hiroshima (Shinamani Kaido Onomichi) [Sunday, 19 Nov]
- Continue from Ikuchijima towards Innoshima and Mukaishima (~18km) via the western coast route after breakfast, with possible stops on the following areas:
- Innoshima: Innoshima Flower Centre, Shimanami Beach [open to more suggestions]
- Mukaishima : there seems to be a lot of brunch places like Willows Nursery etc, soak the view at Mukaishima Rest Park [TBC: open to more suggestions]
Ideally reach Onomichi just around lunch or earlier. Chill for the rest of the day, and if I'm still up for it, explore Onomichi, including but not limited to:
- Exploring the cat alley
- Visit the exhibits at Onomichi City Museum of Art
- Consider walking to Senkoji and Onomichi Hondori Shopping Street
- Look into trying Onomichi-style ramen.
Retire at a guesthouse/hotel near JR Onomichi that I have forwarded the luggage to.
Day 9: Hiroshima (Onomichi, Takehara+Kure OR Tomonoura OR Okayama) Downtown Hiroshima) [Monday, 20 Nov]
- Mill around Onomichi in the morning (if not done yesterday), with a side trip to EITHER Takehara/Kure OR Okayama/Kurashiki OR Tomonoura (choose one):
- Takehara: stroll along the historical townscape [and look if they have any Tamayura-related merch], Okunoshima (if not done during the Shimanami Kaido leg / Kure: look into trying Kure curry/Niku-jaga and visit the Yamato Museum
- Okayama: Okayama Castle (zip via Shinkansen) / Kurashiki : Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter
- Tomonoura: stroll along the townscape during the day (zip via Shinkansen, transfer to local bus)
- Return to Onomichi (no later than 1400), board the etSETOra sightseeing train at 1437, and zip to Hiroshima. Enjoy the sunset along the coastline.
- Retire for the night at Hiroshima proper, probably near JR Hiroshima OR the bus terminal. If time permits, take a gander along the streets and see what takes me from there.
Day 10: Hiroshima (Downtown Hiroshima) [Tuesday, 21 Nov]
Spend the day surveying Hiroshima proper.
- Peace Memorial Park (平和記念公園) and Atomic Bomb Dome
- Hiroshima National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims (国立広島原爆死没者追悼平和祈念館)
- Hiroshima Castle
- Orizuru Tower (おりづるタワー)
- Shukkeien (縮景園)
- Optional: Mazda Museum / Kure (if not done the previous day)
- Try to source for Hiroshima-specific food: Okonomiyaki, Dandan Noodles
Day 11: Hiroshima (with a day trip to Yamaguchi) [Wednesday, 22 Nov]
- Daytrip to Yamaguchi [Shin-Iwakuni] to visit Kintaikyo Bridge via Shinkansen. Also stop by the nearby Iwakuni Castle.
- Try Tonosama Sushi at Iwakuni if possible.
- Take the local train back to Miyajimaguchi and take the boat to Itsukushima.Take the time to stroll around the island and perhaps watch the sunset at the torii gate.
- Exit back to Hiroshima via boat to Hiroshima Port direct, and transit back to hotel.
--------
Shimane + Tottori (4 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- Matsue becomes the main jump point for Shimane just because of the subsidized highway bus from Hiroshima, and ease of access towards Tottori later. There's no direct train between Hiroshima and Izumo/Matsue (!).
- Tottori is really wide size-wise, to the point that it feels more efficient to have two separate hotels in two nights (Kurayoshi/Misasa Onsen + downtown Tottori) rather than one hotel for two nights (i.e. downtown Tottori). Could be just me making excuses to get into an onsen ryokan however.
- Is there anything interesting at Yonago (Tottori) that I should take note of? Based on my initial survey nothing in particular pops up (other than the Tottori Prefectural Flower Park).
- Skipping Tottori Castle since it doesn’t seem to be interesting at first glance. Any other interesting things to at Tottori downtown (or nearby)?
Day 12: Hiroshima Shimane (Matsue) [Thursday, 23 Nov]
- Make good use of the 500yen highway bus from Hiroshima to Matsue. (3.5 hours transit). Fortunately the frequency is not too bad (7-8 buses per day, looking at 0800 departure or later); if there are still outstanding places to visit in Hiroshima I will visit them in the morning.
- Check in at a hotel near JR Matsue, and proceed to trawl around Matsue with whatever daylight is left. (TBC: am considering taking a few stops down to Tamatsukuri Onsen 玉造温泉 or Matsue-shinjoko Onsen instead of the typical hotel. Does anyone have any positive experiences there?)
- Attempt to spend the afternoon at the Adachi Museum of Art. Local train to Yasugi, transfer to free shuttle.
- Chill off in downtown Matsue for the night. Prowl for Shimane-specific food such as Naniwa Zushi (浪花寿司), Shijimi clams (しじみ), Izumo soba, Izumo Zenzai (出雲ぜんざい).
- Bonus: visit the Tottori Prefectural Flower Park for the winter Hanakairo Flower Illumination at Yonago at night [which is just beside Matsue. Free shuttle bus at Yonago bus terminal].
Day 13: Shimane (Izumo / Matsue) [Friday, 24 Nov]
- Day trip from Matsue to Izumo. (JR Matsue JR Izumo, swap to Ichibata local rail to Izumotaisha-mae)
- Take a stop at Izumo Taisha, as well as the nearby Shimane Museum of Ancient Izumo (島根県立古代出雲歴史博物館)
- After lunch, return to JR Matsue and proceed to Yushien Garden (由志園) via bus. Enjoy the sunset over the garden.
- Stop by Matsue Castle on the way back.
Day 14: Shimane (Matsue) Tottori (Kurayoshi) [Saturday, 25 Nov]
- Transfer from Matsue to Kurayoshi in the morning via Super Matsukaze Limited Express (~1h).
- Settle down luggage at Misasa Onsen, then proceed to hike up Mitokusan Sanbutsuji Temple (三仏寺). Cater extra time just in case I have to wait for another fellow to pop up to climb in pairs. Estimated climb time excluding wait is about 2-3 hours both ways?
- Excess time to be spent sauntering Misasa Onsen and its nearby area such as the Nijisseiki Pear Museum [二十世紀梨記念館(なしっこ館)] and Kurayoshi Historical Quarter.
- Retire at Misasa Onsen for the night. Bonus: watch the constellations at night at Misasa Onsen on a Monday/Wednesday/Friday, 2100JST. Current plan does not fall within those 3 weekdays
- Bonus: take a short detour to Conan Town (postnote: not a big fan of the show).
Day 15: Tottori (Kurayoshi Tottori) [Sunday, 26 Nov]
- Transfer from Kurayoshi to Tottori (~35minutes transfer) in the morning, and proceed to tour around Tottori.
- Drop luggage, take a local bus to Tottori Sand Dunes, and visit the nearby Sand Museum.
- Transfer northwards to Uradome Coast via local bus and spend the remainder of the day there. Watch the sunset over the coast.
- Return to downtown Tottori, stroll around and call it a night.
-----------
Hyogo, Kyoto, Osaka , Nara, Mie (10 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- Kinosaki Onsen is intentionally designed to be a slow-paced leg to recover [and also to make time to enjoy the onsens].
- The limited express train between Kinosaki Onsen and Osaka stops by Himeji thus I thought of resting a night there instead of doing day trips via Osaka.
- Osaka itinerary does look sparse but that is in large part because I have already visited most of them in the past. Nevertheless, I would like to experience how different it is in autumn compared to summer [based on those few destinations that I loved going previously].
- I have kept one float day to decompress, OR shift to any of the other prefectures (TBC).
- There are (multiple) special limited express train by Kintetsu; they're not covered by JR pass but nevertheless I would love to ride on those as an experience. The Kintetsu pass covers the basic fare only but based on my preliminary cost estimate, it is still worth getting it.
- Is it feasible to compress Himeji and Kobe to a single day?
- The itineraries for Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Mie are flexible since they're literally beside one another - makes it particularly easy to shift around base on ground situation.
Day 16: Tottori (Tottori) Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen) [Monday, 27 Nov]
- Settle any outstanding sightseeing spots in the morning if required in Tottori, then transfer to Kinosaki Onsen via the Sanin Line.
- Make a pitstop at Amarube ('Sky Station') and marvel at the engineering work.
- Deposit luggage at the ryokan (or put in the coin locker), and stroll around and enjoy Kinosaki Onsen [after all its an onsen town].
- Try to hit as many of the 7 external onsens that are usable. Retire for the night here.
- Optional: go up the ropeway and oversee Kinosaki Onsen in the evening (last ride up ~1630)
- Optional: take a short hike up to Onsenji Temple.
Day 17: Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen + Northern Kyoto (Amanohashidate) day trip) [Tuesday, 28 Nov]
- Optional: take a (very) early start to the day to Takeda Castle Ruins and witness the 'floating castle' effect in the morning (<0800).
- Day trip to Amanohashidate via ToyookaKyotango Railway. Do the funny bend-down pose on the bench at Amanohashidate View Land, and see how it feels like looking at the world inverted.
- Cross the sandbar and look from the other side (Nariaiji Temple / Kasamatsu Park)
- Select one of three additional side-trips:
- EITHER take a local bus up to Ine to look at the Funaya + sightseeing boat,
- OR local rail down to Maizuru to look at the Maizuru World Brick Museum + eat at the Michi-no-eki;
- OR reverse to Toyooka spend time in the city itself e.g. Izushi Castle Town
- Return to Kinosaki Onsen, and continue experiencing the remainder of the onsens. Retire for the night here. Optional: ride the Aomatsu sightseeing train back to Toyooka.
- Optional: Take a trip to Ankokuji Temple (安国寺) in the evening. Likely to visit post-peak autumn which means less than ideal viewing conditions.
Day 18: Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen Himeji) [Wednesday, 29 Nov]
- Transit from Kinosaki Onsen to Himeji via Limited Express Hamakaze (~2 hours).
- Deposit luggage at the hotel or the coin lockers at the station, then proceed for sightseeing.
- Walk along the Miyuki Street Shopping District which is en-route to Himeji Castle.
- Himeji Castle sector : Himeji Castle (姫路城), Kokoen (好古園)
- Take a local bus at Himeji Castle to go to Mount Shosha and hike up Engyōji Temple (圓教寺)
- Optional : Stroll along Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History and/or Himeji City Museum of Art which is beside the castle, OR Shosha Handicraft Museum which is just at the foot of Mount Shosha
- Optional: Make a detour to the Japan Toy Museum near Koro station (~30 minutes from JR Himeji). Closes 1700.
- Look for Hyogo-specific food: Kobe beef, steamed pork buns, sobameshi, himeji oden, etc
Retire at Himeji for the night.
Day 19: Hyogo (Himeji Kobe) Osaka (Dotonburi) [Thursday, 30 Nov]
Day trip to Kobe, before continuing further down to Osaka.
- Check out from Himeji, transit further down to Kobe for another stop before Osaka. Place luggage at the holding facility within the Shinkansen station.
- Take a visit to the Earthquake Memorial Museum (人と防災未来センター) to look at the devastation wrought by the 1995 earthquake.
- Stroll along Kobe Harborland (神戸ハーバーランド) and Meriken Park (メリケンパーク) , look at the Kobe Tower since its closed till 2024 for renovation, and look at the damage caused by the earthquake
- Optional: Head westwards to Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art.
- Optional: Hit up the ASICS Sports Museum (アシックススポーツミュージアム)
- Look at the engineering feat that is the Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge and the nearby Akashi Kaikyo Bridge Exhibition Center at Maiko. (Suzume no Tojimari)
- Return to Shin-kobe, pick up luggage, and transit to Shin-Osaka via Shinkansen, and then to Dotonburi/Shinsaibashi. End the (long) day in Osaka.
Day 20: Osaka [Friday, 1 Dec]
Osaka Nostalgia (acid) trip, speedrun edition: revisiting places that I want to go again
- Day trip to Mino Park and revisit the waterfall (I loved visiting it previously) via the Hankyu line in the morning.
- Zoom down to the Osaka Aquarium after lunch and walk around it (Minoo Umeda Honmachi Osakako Station).
- From there, race towards Abeno Harukas and watch the sunset/nightview at Abeno Harukas.
- Bonus: revisit Sumiyoshi Taisha if time permits.
- Spend whatever time remains at night at Nipponbashi Denden Town (shops close at ~2000) and Dotonburi (some stores are still open near midnight) and/or Shinsekai (新世界).
Day 21: Osaka (Nara day trip) [Saturday, 2 Dec]
Spend a day in Nara.
- Zoom from Namba to Nara via Kintetsu (note: non-JR)
- Explore Todaiji Temple, Kokufuji Temple, Isuien Garden and Kasuga Taisha.
- Optional: pass by Naramachi (奈良町) on the way back.
- Take the Kintetsu line down to Mount Yoshino. [TBC: subject to whether I am too early or late for the koyo.Based on last year's prediction I am about 1-2 weeks too late. Might swap this out to a Uji day trip instead in Kyoto.). Spend time walking around the Shimo Senbon and Naka Senbon and experience the autumn.
- Transfer back to Osaka. Bonus: take the Blue Symphony back to Osaka instead of the typical train. (non-JR)
Day 22: Osaka (Mie day trip) [Sunday, 3 Dec]
Day trip to Mie.
- Take the Iseshima Liner from Tsuruhashi Station (near Namba/Dotonburi) to Ise. Bonus: take the Hinotori from Osaka to Tsu, then transfer to Mie. (non-JR)
- Hit up Ise Jingu (伊勢神宮) [both inner and outer] and Okage Yokocho (おかげ横丁)
- Try to eat Matsuaka Beef or Ise Udon for lunch.
- Head westwards to Futamiokitama Shrine (二見興玉神社) / Meotoiwa Rocks; and if further time permits, go to Toba for the Ama Viewing Platform.
- Take the returning Shimakaze Limited Express train back to Osaka (note: only one train at 1630; if this train is missed, change to normal express trains). (non-JR)

- Walk back to Kyoto station, and take a bus northwards to Kyoto Manga Museum.
- Hop on the bus direct from the Manga Museum to Kinkakuji. [bus 15]
- Select one of two side-trips:
- EITHER head westwards to Arashiyama (note: already visited once in the summer but I still think it nice to visit in autumn/winter this time round). Bonus: experience sunset along the Togetsukyo Bridge.
- OR head eastwards to Higashiyama (closes 1700), Philosopher's path etc (did not visit these in my past trip here so there's the 'new' factor, but it is going to be a physically taxing day. Also, most likely will reach here nearing evening i.e. closing time thus there's a limit to how much I can visit realistically).
Whichever choice, return back to Osaka for the night. Look out for Kyoto-specific food such as Yudofu, Saba Sushi, Warabi Mochi, Nishin Soba (にしんそば) etc.
Day 24: Osaka ('south' Kyoto day trip) [Tuesday, 5 Dec]
(south) Kyoto day trip edition (mainly Uji and Fushimi).

- Take the chance to buy some Uji tea as gifts to relatives. Have lunch along the Omotesando Road.
- Head further northwards to Fushimi, and do another hike up Fushimi Inari. (Note: visited once in the past but I liked the experience thus I would like to do it again.) Bonus: if its done in the evening.
Head back to Osaka and retire for the night. Consider doing any other night activities in Osaka if time, and body permits.
Day 25: Osaka (wildcard) [Wednesday, 6 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture.
Intentionally left blank for later planning -------------
Kanazawa, Gifu+ (4 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- Is it likely for the skiing season to open around 9~10 December at Shiga Kogen or Nozawa Onsen? Would very much like to try skiing for fun, but am uncertain if the snow condition would be satisfactory by then. Some of the skiing website indicates that these two destinations are usually the first to open. I would like to seek advise on this if possible [never skiied before].
- As an additional question to point 1, is 2 days adequate just to get a flavor on skiing?
- Kanazawa is a pretty solid jump point to Shirakawago/Takayama via express buses (~1 to 2 hour one way).
- My initial planning considered going to Kurobe Gorge (Toyama) but apparently the railways are closed from December onwards. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
- Another sightseeing train in Kanazawa that I can fit in nicely in my current plans (花嫁のれん), runs on Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun.
Day 26: Osaka Ishikawa (Kanazawa (Kanazawa cityside)) [Thursday, 7 Dec]
- Zip from Osaka to Kanazawa via Limited Express Thunderbird in the early morning (~3hours; ideally the 0740 or 0810 service). Drop luggage at the hotel near JR Kanazawa and explore the cityside.
- Have lunch at the Omicho Market (近江町市場), OR at Higashi Chaya District.
- Stroll around Kanazawa Castle (金沢城, Kanazawajō) and the nearby Kenrokuen (兼六園) / Seisonkaku Villa (成巽閣, Seisonkaku) .
- Consider visiting one or more of the nearby museums if possible:
- D.T. Suzuki Museum OR
- National Crafts Museum OR
- 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art
- Optional: Head southwards to Myoryuji Temple + Nishi Chaya District.
- Optional: Head northwards to Higashi Chaya District (if not done for lunch).
Any outstanding spots not completed today, to be rolled over to the next 2 days (if possible).
- Retire in Kanazawa for the night. Be on the lookout for Kanazawa-specific food: Gold-leaf ice cream, oden, hanton rice
- Optional: have a stay at Yuwaku Onsen for at least one night for anime-related reasons. (Hanasaku Iroha)
Day 27: Ishikawa (Kanazawa cityside) / Gifu (Shirakawago, Takayama) [Friday, 8 Dec]
- Day trip to Shiwakawago and Takayama via Nohi bus (non-JR, ~1h). Grab the morning bus express bus to Shirakawago and explore the place in the morning. Experience early snowfall (?) there. Optional: visit Ainokura on the way towards Shirakawago.
- Take another express bus down to Takayama for lunch (~1h travel time).
- Explore what Takayama has to offer. Stroll along the old town near the bus terminal and visit the Takayama Jinya. If time permits, stroll along the Higashiyama Walking Course.
- Optional: pay a visit to Hida Folk Village.
- Return to Kanazawa via Hida Limited Express to Toyama Shinkansen to Kanazawa, OR take the same Nohi express bus directly back (non-JR).
- Retire at Kanazawa for the night. Last express bus from Takayama to Kanazawa is 1630, arrive at 1845. Alternatively, head northwards to Toyama via JR and transfer to Kanazawa.
Day 28: Ishikawa (Kanazawa cityside / outskirts) [Saturday, 9 Dec]
Side trip to Wakura Onsen / Nanao for anime-related sightseeing. (
Insomanics after Class, Hanasaku Iroha)
- Zoom from Kanazawa up to Wakura Onsen/Nanao via Limited Express Noto Kagaribi. Do some sightseeing related to Insomanics after Class and Hanasaku Iroha.
- Do some train spotting with two anime along the Noto Railways. Stop at Nishigishi station for some sightseeing. (non-JR)
- Return to Kanazawa in the evening from Wakura Onsen via the sightseeing train Hanayomenoren [花嫁のれん, last train 1630).
- End the night at Kanazawa.
Day 29: Ishikawa (wildcard) [Sunday, 10 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture.
Intentionally left blank for later planning --------------
Tokyo (~6 days) Specific thoughts while planning:
- Specific interest to target: anime/vtuber stuff, music (piano in particular), bookstores etc.
- This is the point in time I should go ham on souvenier purchase if I have not done so. I'll probably get an extra cardboard box or duffel bag to lug with me to the airport to store extra stuff.
- Would like to seek recommendation on where I should set my base for the 5~6 days here. For now I am planning to pit at Ginza, subject to availability and cost. My thought is that as long as its along the Yamanote line everything rolls I suppose.
- Hard pass on Golden Gai on the Shunjuku leg (I do not drink).
- There's way too many to list in terms of what I would like to do in Tokyo, but I have listed items that are of particular interest to me first within the available time frame. If you have strong opinions on specific locations do let me know.
Day 30: Ishikawa (Kanazawa) Tokyo (Ginza) [Monday, 11 Dec]
- Zip from Kanazawa to Tokyo via the Hoririku Shinkansen in the morning (just north of two hours). (TBC : If I can optimize my schedule better, I can try squeezing two days here for a stop at Nozawa Onsen / Shiga Kogen (Nagano) for a short ski experience).
- Deposit luggage at one of the Ginza hotels (TBC: subject to cost; might swap for another location later on)
- Explore ('south') Tokyo with the remainder of the day.
- Marvel at the architecture that is the Tokyo Station and its surrounding.
- Visit the Imperial Palace.
- Head south towards the Mori Art Museum (closes 2200)
- End the night with a stop at Tokyo Tower (closes 2230).
Day 31: Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku and Nakano) [Tuesday, 12 Dec]
Explore ('west') Tokyo, namely Shibuya, Shinjuku and Nakano.
- Start off with an early day visit to Meji Shrine / Yoyogi Park.
- Head up to Shinjuku. Spend the remainder of the morning and lunch exploring Kabukicho, Hanazono Shrine and Omoide Yokochō (ideally have lunch here). Also make a pit stop at Kinokuniya's flagship store at Shinjuku.
- Head northwards to Nakano Broadway and trawl for anime goods for several hours (closes ~1900)
- Head south down back to Shibuya and experience the crossing in peak night condition. Walk around and soak in the atmosphere. Optional: stop by the Ishibashi music store at Shibuya (closes 2000).
- Cap off the night and look at the night view at Shibuya Sky (closes 2230). Zip back to the hotel at Ginza.
Day 32: Tokyo (Akibahara, Asakusa and Sky Tree) [Wednesday, 13 Dec]
- Kick off the day with a morning visit to Asakusa (i.e. Sensoji).
- Transit over to Tokyo Skytree to watch the Tokyo cityscape in the day.
- Trawl around Akibahara for the afternoon. (Animate, Sega claw machines, etc).
- Also stop by Ochanomizu for sightseeing (Suzume no Tojimari)
- Zip back to the hotel for the night. If time permits, stop by the two flagship music stores along Ginza: Yamaha Ginza and Yamano Ginza. Also, visit Itoya Ginza (stationary store).
Day 33: Tokyo (Kamakura day trip OR Ikebukuro) [Thursday, 14 Dec]
EITHER take a day trip Kamakura, OR explore northern Tokyo (Ikebukuro)
Kamakura leg:
- Make a detour to Used Tyre Market Sagamihara Store to experience the retro vending machines. Then head southwards to Enoshima.
- Look at the giant Buddha statue and stroll along Hasedera.
- Take the Enoden to Enoshiima and explore the island.
- Take the JR back to Ginza and retire for the night.
Tokyo (Ikebukuro leg):
- Visit Otome Road for otaku related stuffs.
- Trawl the usual suspects such as Bic Camera etc.
- Make a stop at the Mejiro Gardens.
- Visit the Waseda International House of Literature (The Haruki Murakami Library) at Waseda University.
Day 34: Tokyo (wildcard) [Friday, 15 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture.
Intentionally left blank for later planning
Day 35: Tokyo Home [Saturday, 16 Dec]
- Contemplate life at the hotel, doing whatever I feel like for the morning and early afternoon. Bonus: have an early breakfast at Tsukiji Market in the morning if staying at Ginza.
- Clear any last minute administrative matter (if any), or do (very) last minute sightseeing/buying. Most likely limited to Ginza and Akibahara.
- Get a nice lunch omakase to cap it off if possible. (taking recommendations if anyone has one, ideally meat/beef centric instead of just sushi).
- Head off to Narita from Tokyo Station via NEX just after lunch at 1430 1530 to Narita, flight at 1830.
END ---------------------
If you're still reading up to this point, here's my own personal ramblings/thoughts on JR pass usage:
I have thought of two ways of doing this for the first 21 days:
a. easy-mode : just get 21 days JR global pass before the price hike at 60450 yen, OR b. hard-mode: get a 7 day JR global pass (to cover the NEX fees, the basic fee on the Sunrise Seto to Shikoku, as well as limited express trains within Shikoku) (29650) + 5 days for JR Okayama Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass (15000) + 4 days for JR Sanin Okayama Area Pass + 5 days for JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (10000) for a total of 59230.
The initial conclusion was to go with option A since that reduces the administrative burden, but I realized the individual passes do have its own perk which truimphs over the global JR pass. For instance, the Sanin Okayama Area Pass provides a (minor) discount for the Adachi Museum of Art; the Kansai Wide Pass covers the Kyotango route between Kinosaki Onsen and Amanohashidate which the global JR pass does not cover, JR Okayama Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass covers JR buses within Hiroshima for free, therefore I am inclined to go with the hell option (option B) as it stands.
For the remaining 14 days, I could also get the global 14 day JR pass at 47250 yen but it is not worth it at all, because I will be relying largely on Kintetsu for the Osaka/Kyoto/Nara/Mie leg which the JR pass most certainly does not cover.
- For the Osaka/Nara/Mie/Kyoto leg, I intend to make good use of a mix of both local metro and the Kintetsu rail pass for 5 days (4900). If I do exploit Kintetsu's limited express train to its fullest, I should be able to save money by buying the pass. The Osaka Amazing Pass at 2600yen a day does not make financial sense for me this time round, given how little I am exploring within Osaka.
- For the Osaka Kanazawa, Shirakawago and Takayama leg, the preferred pass of choice is the Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass over the global JR pass, in large part because this pass fully absorbs the Nohi highway bus fees (which can rack up quite a lot at ~8000yen for a return trip between Kanazawa and Shirakawago/Takayama). Also this absorbs the Thunderbird fee. One major issue with my current plan is that it does not cover Wakura Onsen nor the sightseeing train.
- For the final Kanazawa Tokyo leg, the preferred choice is the Horuriku Arch Pass that covers the direct Shinkansen back to Tokyo, and the NEX fees to Narita when I depart from Tokyo. Will only break even with the pass at best unless I make a stop at Nagano.
So all in all, there's quite little incentive to get the global JR pass after I worked out my schedule, apart from the initial 7 days for the Sunrise Seto jump which the All Shikoku Pass will not cover.
Through the hodge-podge of multiple area passes, it works out to around 102890 yen for the whole trip of 35 days, contrast with 107700 yen for a 21 + 14 global JR pass. While there's a minor cost saving doing the hard way which sweetens the deal, the additional minor perks associated with the area passes sells it for me, as I would had to pay more out of pocket to cover non-JR pass buses/rails and such which would add up to much greater cost than I would had anticipated. Also, if I did this trip post-price hike in October, the calculus becomes a no-brainer: avoid the global JR pass like the plague.

2023.06.09 12:51 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 23: KING BUFFALO
So when you think of cities with
high culture and vibrant music scenes on the east coast, what springs to mind? Obviously New York. Thanks to Drake, we all know about the growing music scene in Toronto. You
prahbahbly musta tawt a Bawstan tew. Maybe Montreal or Philadelphia or even Baltimore crossed your mind.
Hah.
Baltimore. Time to check your cultural bias, pal. You passed over a quiet little city on the south shore of Lake Ontario, nestled in the Genesee River valley. It has a history as a hotbed of Abolitionism and Women’s Rights. It is the home of Eastman Kodak, Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, Western Union, Ragu and other innovative companies. It has a lively music scene, great nightclubs, world-renowned universities, thriving museums, arts & culture festivals, and live theatre. It is a true cultural gem that many folks overlook.
Yep. You bet
your ass I am talking about Rochester, New York.
Since we know that Stoner Rock can come from anywhere, it should be no surprise that Rochester has produced one of the leading bands in this genre. This week we are going to check out a band you are going to want to listen to. If you know them, you love them. If you haven’t heard of them, you are going to thank me.
This week’s band is
KING BUFFALO. About Them Hold on a sec. King Buffalo? Not King Rochester?
To be fair,
King Rochester sounds like the villain in a Disney movie. Kinda hard to imagine that on a T-Shirt. King New York sounds like a particularly
obnoxious Yankees fan (and yeah, finding a Yankees fan that isn’t obnoxious is a tough go). King Albany sounds like a car made by
Kia. But
King Buffalo? That just works.
Our heroes didn’t start out together. King Buffalo were made up of members of two other Rochester area bands.
Randall Coon and Scott Donaldson were playing together in Velvet Elvis. That five piece band played heavy rock with space-based themes in the early 2010’s. Sean McVay and Dan Reynolds were in another band called Abandoned Buildings Club (side note: kinda neat that their initials were ABC), who had a pure psychedelic rock vibe. When both VE and ABC appeared to be having limited success, the four musicians decided to merge their talents into one band. Coon had handled vocals and guitar in
Velvet Elvis and
Donaldson had been rock solid on drums. McVay had done vocals and guitar in
Abandoned Buildings Club and Reynolds had anchored the sound with his bass. All the pieces were there for a classic Beatles-esque lineup.
So out of the wreckage of ABC and VE, KB arose. The four members gelled so well that they were able to record their first demo - aptly titled
Demo - in just two days. Their sound was immediately compared to tourmates and close friends All Them Witches. But where ATW were bluesy and sludgy, King Buffalo had produced songs
full of space. Oh, there were heavy riffs for sure - but there were passages of music that were contrastingly lighter and further apart. The best example of these contrasts can be found in the more than 11 minutes of
Providence Eye. The first six and a half minutes come at you at a lulling pace, enveloping you in the moment. You get swept up in the rolling riffs. But then the drop happens and you suddenly realize the song has been building to this peak. The tempo picks up and you ride a
relentless rollercoaster until you hit the Black Sabbath-inspired outro, which takes you home. It is an emotional experience. The two other tracks -
In Dim Light and
Pocket Full of Knife are smaller essays on the same theme.
It was clear right from
Demo that King Buffalo had some serious talent. But if you have listened to the band you will notice that one thing is starkly different on
Demo than from any of their other releases: the vocals. Randall Coon was the lead vocalist on these recordings. If you play them up against anything since by the band they stand out. Our very own QotSA may have successfully had multiple vocalists on multiple tunes, but King Buffalo was destined to have Sean McVay take over the mic. Shortly after 2013’s
Demo, Coon left the band to do a solo project called
Skunk Hawk. King Buffalo stood at a crossroads: did they look to replace Coon, or should they carry on as a Power Trio? The choice for them was obvious. McVay, Reynolds and Donaldson knew that they had fantastic potential together. They decided they didn't need anyone else.
Side note: Regular readers of these write ups know that All Them Witches just went through this exact crisis in 2019. What I didn’t share then is that ATW are close friends with KB. I would not be surprised to learn that ATW had some serious conversations about their lineup with the boys from KB before they, too, decided last year to pare down to just three members.
To re-christen their new lineup, in 2015 King Buffalo
went in on a split EP with Swedish band Lé Betre (I mean, hooking up with a
Swedish partner is a dream of mine, so I see the appeal.) They re-recorded their standout tune
Providence Eye with McVay on vocals, as well as two new tracks -
Like a Cadillac and
New Time. New Time opens their side of the EP with an infectious, descending riff that hooks you immediately. It is clear from the lyrics -
No wasting around, it’s a new time - that they had moved on from Coon.
Like a Cadillac follows up and is a three and a half minute jam that leaves you wanting more. The re-recorded version of
Providence Eye closes out their side of the split EP and leaves no doubt that they are in charge. It is a tighter,
heavier version, and the amazing outro is so low down that it will make you want to rob your own house.
With their lineup now set, it was time to put together enough music to tour on. In 2016, King Buffalo released
Orion. Here you can witness the melding of their influences into something majestic and fantastic, and it is here that they really develop their signature style.
To explain this style, you need to understand basic song structure.
Most pop songs tend to go
verse - chorus - verse - chorus - bridge - chorus - chorus. Sure, you could add in a solo for the bridge, or a detailed intro or outro, or another verse - but this is a tried and true formula. Some variation of this dominates the pop charts to this day.
Not with King Buffalo songs. These guys are the masters of the drop, and you hear it in most of their tunes. QotSA fans are no strangers to that long build and release; it is an integral part of tunes like
The Evil Has Landed, God is in the Radio, Song For The Dead, and
I Appear Missing. One of the sickest drops ever recorded happens in the middle of the Them Crooked Vultures tune
No One Loves Me & Neither Do I. It is where the music turns around, and a new riff takes over, often along with a pace change. It is then that you realize that the song has built to this climactic moment, and you are engulfed by the music.
King Buffalo does this better than anyone else, and you hear it clearly articulated, again and again, on the album
Orion. Take the song
Kerosene for example.
A rolling bass riff from Reynolds establishes the song right out of the gate. Donaldson produces punchy drum beats with cymbal crashes at the end of each phrase. McVay’s slide guitar rounds out the intro. McVay’s vocals - very Ozzy like, if
Ozzy had any semblance of self-control - frame the first verse, which ends in a fuzzy, heavy riff with crashing cymbals. This same pattern is repeated a second time and the drop is teased at just past three minutes in, but does not happen quite yet. The listener’s anticipation builds as the airy, soaring solo from McVay calls out in contrast to the rolling bass. After the guitar solo bridge, the band goes right back into the chorus. But then it happens:
THE DROP. Just past 5 minutes in, the song takes a complete and abrupt turn for a totally different riff that is at the same time heavier and brand new, and yet has been there all the while.
What King Buffalo does brilliantly is subvert your musical expectations.
The standard structure is V-C-V-C-B-C-C.
Kerosene is V-C-V-C-B-C-DROP-OUTRO. Just when you subliminally expect something the same, you get something different.
The entire album is like that.
Orion hardly sounds like a debut. It is a mature and deliberate soundscape built by talented musicians who are making significant choices about their art. Songs like
Drinking From The River Rising open with an expansive and elastic topography, but drill down to the
molten lava of heavy riffs and distorted fuzz.
Sleeps On A Vine begins with one of the most zen riffs you’ve ever heard and ends in a tumultuous and heavy sonic assault that is pure
controlled chaos. Every song on the album is a study in contrasts that leaves you with auditory whiplash and a burning desire for more.
They are that good.
King Buffalo were able to tour on their new material, and did so extensively. They played clubs and larger venues, often with friends and fellow Stoner Rockers All Them Witches and other bands like The Sword and Elder. In 2017, the released the EP
Repeater as a follow up. It is just three songs (The vinyl ad reads,
All songs on one side! No need to flip!) but it is a heck of a musical journey. The title track off the EP is 13+ minutes long and is one huge build. When the fuzz finally drops after almost 8 minutes, it is a true cathartic moment. It sneaks up on you, and is so welcome when it hits - especially after McVay’s repetition that “Every Day is the Same* - that you intrinsically understand how great it is when things finally change for the better.
Too Little Too Late is an instrumental tune that is both enveloping and expansive. It is a terrific bridge to the final track,
Centurion, which is an
unbelievable groove. Centurion has three minutes of set up leading to an unreal fuzzy drop that is so dirty it will get you evicted from your apartment.
The influence of their touring with All Them Witches can also be seen on their next full length release, 2018’s
Longing To Be The Mountain. Ben McLeod from ATW produced the album. ATW, The Sword and Elder are all thanked in the liner notes. The album picks up right where
Repeater leaves off, with KB experimenting with long form songs like
Morning Song and the title track, and shorter jams like
Sun Shivers, Cosmonaut, and
Quickening. Reynolds and McVay pepper the songs with synthesizer sounds that add colour and texture to the overall compositions. Donaldson drums with impeccable precision to provide each song with a safe mooring to return to, driving the guitars forward at the same time as he holds the rhythm in check. This is most clearly evident in
Eye Of The Storm. The result is a rich tapestry of expansive and flowing music full of
heavy jams and
storytelling that will leave the listener wanting more. Their signature build-to-sonic-explosion style does not let fans down.
The success of
Longing To Be The Mountain allowed for extensive touring across North America and Europe. It also led to appearances at bigger gigs, like at Rockpalast and the Stoned & Dusted desert rock event in 2019. Anyone that has seen any of their live work knows that King Buffalo are
simply hypnotizing on stage. Reynolds’ bass work is reminiscent of Geddy Lee with his complex and flowing style. Donaldson brings controlled power to the drum kit, and is ready to cut loose when the drop comes. And McVay has become a true front man, comfortable with the lead voice on guitar and the microphone.
Their next release,
Dead Star, dropped in 2020 and generated all kinds of buzz in the Stoner Rock scene. Of course, the tour planned to support it got axed when the entire world went into
lockdown. But the (short album? EP?) is simply fantastic.
Red Star Pt. 1 & 2 continues their long form examination and has everything you’d expect from them.
Echo of A Waning Star is a lament of just over 3 minutes that is near-perfect.
Ecliptic sounds like the soundtrack to a John Carpenter movie and is a complete jam with serious cool 1980’s vibes.
Dead Star, the title track, is almost Radiohead-esque in its evocative and regretful take on death and decay.
But the standout track has to be
Eta Carinae, which has one of the greatest musical drops and turn-arounds you will ever hear. The entire song
pivots just past four minutes in and becomes a 70’s anthem worthy of Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath. If you listen to no other tune here today, you have to check it out. It will absolutely get stuck in your head.
The band dropped their first live record,
Live At Freak Valley, in 2020. This is a really nice retrospective/greatest hits album kinda deal. What stands out is just how fucking
tight the band is live. With some bands, live versions veer
wildly from the recorded ones - and not at all in a good way. This record is the opposite. You can clearly hear on
Orion and
Kerosene that KB are just that good live.
In the wake of the global pandemic, King Buffalo decided to musically capture the moment in time. They decided to release a trifecta of albums. 2021 saw them drop
The Burden of Restlessness and then
Acheron. The third record in this trio is 2022’s
Regenerator. It is really important to consider all three records in this Triptych at the same time, for they are a sonic cycle.
TBOR is a
descent into despondency. Acheron is about hitting
rock bottom, and being in Hell.
Regenerator is about finding a way to claw yourself
back into the light. Each album stands on its own, but together they form a sweeping epic journey that we can all relate to.
TBOR is an album where the protagonist gradually
loses the will to exist. There is a cry of deep frustration in
Burning, a not-so-subtle reference to a plague in
Locusts, a study in being confined indoors in
Silverfish, and an outright statement that our hero is sinking in
Loam. In fact, the lyrics tell us: “Still I press my face into the ground/I’m waiting for the hammer to fall.”
It is not a happy album. Just when you think things have to get better, we get the 4-track jam of
Acheron. In this record, our hero has fallen to his lowest point. He has
descended to Hell. The title track - the first one on the album - makes this clear, when it says: “Waking up under the ground/Silver asleep on my tongue.”
Just in case you didn’t get the classic reference, Acheron is the river one must cross in Greek mythology to get to the underworld. Souls going to Hell had coins placed in their mouth to pay
Charon, the ferryman, to take them across the river to Hades. So our hero did sink into the Loam in the last album, and finds himself in Hell. This theme is reinforced in
Zephyr, who was the Greek God of the West Wind, and
Shadows, which references what the Greeks used to call dead spirits - Shades. And just in case you had any doubt, the final track on the album is
Cerberus, named after the
three-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades. What is even cooler about
Acheron is how it was recorded. Instead of a studio, they recorded the album underground in a cave.
Now that is
commitment. The final album in this cycle is 2022’s
Regenerator. While the first two records were about descent, despondency, and
hitting rock bottom, this record is about regaining hope and optimism, and finding
a way to come back. We hear this clearly in the lyrics of the record’s final track,
Firmament, which says: “Out of the loam I rise, embraced by the etheThe river below relieves my hands of silver” - clearly calling back to the tracks
Loam and
Acheron. And in case you didn’t know, in Greek mythology the Firmament means
the Sky or the Heavens. Our hero has left Hell behind, and
ascended into Heaven. References to positive mythology are all over this album, from the album art to the tracks
Mercury and
Avalon. It is a
total jam. But the best song on the album might just be
Mammoth. If you don’t like the guitar on this song, you and I can’t be friends.
I got a chance to see KB perform last year when they toured with Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. They are
fucking tight. They were the opening act, but were the absolute highlight of the show. I want everyone to hear this band because they really are something special.
Go check them out.
Links to QOTSA We know that QotSA front man Josh Homme and Kyuss invented Stoner Rock in the 1990’s. They were the genre-defining band. King Buffalo (and other bands like All Them Witches) have picked up this proverbial torch and are now bringing the sound to the next generation of fans. King Buffalo drummer Scott Donaldson is known to be a huge QotSA fan. Perhaps he saw them live when they played in
Rochester in 2014 in support of
...Like Clockwork. It is also sometimes easy to forget that Josh was not the only architect of the low desert sound. Original Kyuss Drummer and co-founder Brant Bjork wrote many Kyuss tunes and continues to be a leader in the music scene today. King Buffalo have played with Bjork at festivals three times: Freak Valley Festival, Black Deer Festival and the aforementioned Stoned & Dusted. There is also a planned collaborative project between Bjork and King Buffalo that may be coming our way soon.
The future is
