Reliable brand new cars that I can get for around ~30k

2023.06.10 22:06 justhrowmeawaydamnit Reliable brand new cars that I can get for around ~30k

I’ve been trying to get a Honda civic for the longest already, and the dealerships have been nothing but scummy. My 2004 civic lx is coming to its end of life and while I don’t want to be desperate I need a new car soon. I have no idea when my car will break down again.
I passed over a CPO Lexus, because I want something brand new. I also however don’t want to be tied up in car payments and can easily throw a check of ~30k-35k. Im open to any ideas, I’ve put a deposit already to a brand new civic at a dealership but the salesman said the ETA is June 27-July 3rd and not sure if I can wait that long.

2023.06.10 21:54 Imaginary_Demand_508 Used car purchase decision

I'm recently looking for a 10 to 15 year old used car.
Suppose you have 4 choices from the same dealership:
  1. 2012 Toyota Camry
  2. 2012 Honda Accord
  3. 2014 Toyota Corolla
  4. 2014 Honda Civic
Every car sells at $15,000 out the door price. The mileage of all cars are the same (100k miles).
Which one do you guys prefer?
Would you go for a better model but longer age or cheaper model with lower age?

2023.06.10 21:53 steel_magnolia_med Can I splice together wires on the front end harness vs replacing the whole thing?

Can I splice together wires on the front end harness vs replacing the whole thing?
My air conditioning (“AC”) on my Honda CRV 2020 with 50K miles is out, so I took it to the dealership and they diagnosed my car with the front end wire harness connection being broken (they attributed the degradation of the wires to heat damage, due to placement of the wires… seems like a design flaw if that was the cause). See the photo of the nub. I tried getting an after market pigtail connector for just the broken AC connecting a arm, and it was slightly too large when my boyfriend tried to plug it in to the car part where it connects. So I went back to Honda and they said they don’t sell individual pigtail connectors, just the whole front end harness with all of the arms to all of the connecting items. They want $750 to install a whole new front end harness vs fixing just the AC arm. I thought maybe a mechanic could just splice the wires together on the AC arm specifically, but didn’t realize the wires are wrapped in thick stiff insulating tubing. Makes it look a harder to cut off the AC arm, but I know nothing about this.
Would it be possible to just cut the tubing to get the wires to the AC arm off the rest of the new harness, splice the wire ends of the cut AC arm to the wires on the old harness that’s installed in my car to fix the AC connection, vs taking out the whole harness and replacing it with the new harness? I put pictures below of the broken part with the wires sticking out, side by side with the new wire harness. Want to fix this for as cheaply as possible to get through this summer heat, doing my deliveries for work. Thank you!

2023.06.10 20:36 KenzoSatori Which of these used cars should I consider buying?

I'm in college, my budget is very limited, but I do have a 2013 Chevy Spark to trade in. My main criteria are being under $10k, not needing any expensive work, under 200k miles, and looking good only as a bonus since it would be my daily. These are some listings I've found recently:
All of these are from used dealerships as I'd kind of need to trade in with my Spark.

2023.06.10 19:44 3uph0rya EPC light coming on and off

It has happened twice in two weeks now; the EPC light will come on as soon as I start my car and will turn off a minute or so after I started driving. I don't hear any weird noises nor notice any lose of power. It may be coincidential, but my batterie died last week, two days later after the first EPC light incident, and I got it changed. I ask the mechanic to take a look at it but they came up empty handed. They said everything else was fine, except my very dead battery, which got changed.
It happened again this morning. I tried starting up my engine but it failed three times. I turned off the ignition, waited a few seconds and was able to start the engine this time. EPC light was on, and turned off 30 seconds later. No power loss, no other lights. I'll check on Monday with the tech guys at the dealership (I work for Honda, how ironic) and hopefully they'll be able to find something with a scan. In the meantime, I'm curious if it happened to anyone else, and what was the issue?
I drive a 2015 Jetta 2.0
Thanks.

2023.06.10 19:41 YungJDubz420 Dealer tells me issues on new car isn't covered

I purchased a 2022 Honda Civic from a dealership in Southern California last March. I live in Northern California so I have been getting the car serviced at another dealership nearby my place. Couple months ago, a warning for adaptive cruise control failure popped up on my dashboard and has been there since then. Since I never use the cruise control, I figured I'd just wait till I get my car serviced again to get it checked out.
My car recently hit 15000 miles so last week I took my car in for service (oil change) and was told that the express service guys can't help me look at the problem with the cruise control so the adviser scheduled a regular service for me this Saturday. After the express service last week, I was told that my rear shock absorbers are leaking also and they will look at it when I bring it in today.
I brought my car to the dealer to get it checked out today, and was told that the rear shock absorbers that's leaking don't fall under the warranty. I asked the adviser that since the part isn't supposed to fail within a year and half and 15000 miles why is it not covered? I was essentially told that since the part isn't supposed to fail that quickly I must have done something to break it so it isn't covered. By that logic what is the point of having warranty? If any part fails they can just cliam "oh it isn't supposed to fail so you must have done something and borke it:"
For issue with the adaptive cruise control, they told me that they need to do a diagnostics to figure out which part is causing the issue. If the part that's causing the issue falls under warrnty and they'll fix it for free. If not, they are going to charge me for just the diagnostics alone.
I was also told that the extended warranty I had purchased from the from the SoCal dealership is through a third party and that third party isn't a partner with the NorCal Honda so it's basically useless.
I left my car at the dealership to do the diagnostics and I am waitinfg for them to call me back. I am just so frustrated with this whole situation and I need some advice on how I should proceed. If they call me back and tells me the part that is causing the adaptive cruise control to fail doesn't fall under warranty what should I do? Also what can I do about the whole third party extended warranty situation?
I apologize for the long post and any help is appreciated!

I helped my husband get his dream car. ❤️ Story and pictures.
Backstory:My husband had an 05 Accord EX coupe v6 for 9 years. He loved that car. He went through some hardships in life, almost cost him his life from a suicide attempt in 2020. By then the Accord had been running rough for months. We dumped a couple thousand on a trans rebuild at the Honda Specialist but the car still had a major malfunction. So we had to sell it. He got a Mazda 6 for a bit and got back on his feet and gainfully employed again. I told him he'd get another car when he was ready.
Now he's been at his job for a year and a half and had has excelled. So he had been looking for cars for several months now. I had been hunting with him and found the car that I really wanted a 2016 Mustang V6 with a six-speed manual transmission. I tried to talk him into buying it for himself but, He didn't want it for himself but told me that I should go for it. ❤️ I have been so happy with my new Mustang but I knew that he would never feel the same unless he had another Accord! I told him that I would search until I found it for him. Finally I did after a couple of weeks! I found a great deal on this beauty, thousands less compared to other dealerships! (Like the mustang I got) Plus only 66k miles on the car!
2016 Honda Accord EX-L V6. Obsidian blue pearl. Picture of the old Honda at the end. 😀

2023.06.10 18:42 skradaddy Looking for a touring bike

Im 6ft1, 230lbs and currently drive a 2013 BMW C650 GT, I’ve been riding for the past 2 years and got my license with my current bike. Im currently selling the bike and looking for a bike to go on long rides and overall be comfortable the whole time I’m riding. I prefer either a Honda or Yamaha. I recently road the new 2023 Honda Rebel 1100T and felt really cramped on it. I always wanted the luxury Gold-wing but its not in my price range. My budget is $6k. Also maintenance and parts are a big deal because I like fixing stuff and am really handy and don’t want to spend a fortunate at a dealership. I know basic maintenance on bikes. Thanks :)

2023.06.10 18:17 DJKhaledIsRetarded Can I actually get the dealership to tint the windows and throw in floor mats for free? (Texas)

I'm buying either a new Honda or Toyota. Nothing special, it's not like I'm rolling through spending 50k+. It's going to be a civic or a corolla. Financing is already set at the places I'm talking to, I've been approved and have the terms I want/am comfortable with.
This is the fourth car I've bought with my spouse but it's the first car I've taken my time and talked to multiple dealerships and such. Every other time I just had a car in mind, showed up, bought the car, sat in finance forever, and then left. My husband has always been convinced (I do not know who the multitude of people are that he claims told him this) you can get them to tint your windows for free and throw in the nicer floor mats before you buy.
I'm not in sales, he is. I don't even haggle with street vendors or anyone else. I really just think that seems unrealistic, as the price of something is usually just the price of it in my mind. So, can I ask for free window tint and floor mats, or am I just going to make a jackass out of myself by doing that?

2023.06.10 17:46 Mean_Preparation_408 Cost of repairs exceed value of car

I have a 12 year old Honda with 270k miles on it, I have had it for five years and put almost 40k of those on it. It’s worth at BEST about 6k but I doubt I’d ever get that for it, and I just took it in to get it checked out and it has numerous issues - with 270k miles you can imagine the sort of stuff that’s wrong with it. Engine stuff - piston rings and oil pump O-rings, among several other big things. Overall the total cost of repairs (at the dealership shop) is around 8k, and that does not include wear items like tires, brakes, oil change etc. The car itself has never had any real problems until recently, and even the problems it has had has not impacted its reliability. I’m not exactly sentimentality attached to it, and I’m pretty sure I know what I’m going to do with it, but just wanted some unbiased professional advice. When is the cost of repairs too much to justify? Given the info I have said, what would you personally do in this situation? (Not including repairing it myself) Thanks!

2023.06.10 05:18 Fugoola New CR-V will be here the 20th but WTF is up with the add-ons?

I finally settled on a Honda CR-V EX-L today for $38,500 (Urban Gray Pearl) and put a deposit on it. I am very excited, and I haven't even driven the EX-L, just the Hybrid Sport Touring. I know it won't be as road quiet but I hope it is quieter than the Rav 4 I test drove.
Anyway, I was pretty upset the dealership would not remove the all-weather package for $695, especially when it is a $495 option and I want Weathertech but they refused. I decided to check other dealerships and I'll be damned, there was not one dealership I could find that would delete this in Idaho, Washington, Oregon nor California. As a matter of fact, Washington dealerships forced $4k in options, California $2.5K and Idaho $1K. Most often it was the weather stuff plus perma-plate and some kind of treatment for the door edges and door handles (interior).
10 Years ago I bought a 2013 RAM 1500 under MSRP with not a single option and was very happy. What the hell is going on with all this forced option stuff? I feel that since most dealerships are offering MSRP they need to get more money for frivolous crap most people don't need or want it is forced and due to demand, we either wait or pay it.
Am I missing something here?

2023.06.10 04:21 anonbeyondgfw VW Atlas or Honda Odyssey for family use?

Have been doing test drives and shopping around for a family vehicle. We are not in a hurry what so ever but want to start looking and gather information to make informed decision.
Lately we went to a number of local dealerships and below are summaries of our experience.
Toyota: almost no cars in lot. All vehicles including Sienna are by allocation only and with markups. Prius ~$3k and Sienna $5-8k. Dealers would call you if something close to what you want is allocated and if you want it a $1000 deposits is required to secure your “spot”. I was polite but screaming inside “no way in hell” and left.
VW: test drove a V6 Atlas. Smooth ride, doesn’t feel clumsy given the size and profile. steering wheel feels very light, which caught me off guard because in my mind “German steering is heavy unlike flimsy Korean cars” thanks to my Audi sedan. Room is ample, even the third row is actually functional. Major downside OFC is the MPG. We knew it’s gonna be pretty bad with a V6 but our test drive was 11mpg. Still, we like it.
Honda: test drove a used Odyssey. Very nimble for a minivan, changing lanes feels as smooth as it can be. Ample power to overtake. Stowable seats and total 8 seats are absolutely appreciated. However the one we test drove had some electrical issues. Overall, I like the Odyssey. In my area tons of households got one.
Mazda: tried CX90 turbo premium. It reminds me more of a German car for sure. Steering wheel feels heavier, you can feel the power of the inline 6. interior also beautiful, love all those buttons. However the 3rd row was not practical, legroom kinda ok BUT 2nd row seats and rails are in the way of 3rd row passenger’s feet, which renders the legroom useless.
Kia: tried carnival, top trim. Ample rooms and seats. Tech overload, the blind spot camera footage shows up when turning light is on, very useful feature. However, the interior feels shallow, you can feel a sense of cheapness in their imitation of “luxury.” For example, nicely looking leather covers the seat, the back though is covered in black synthetic materials and stitched with the leather. Trust me when I say the work was not done nicely and lack of any craftsmanship is notable. Then again it’s a sub 50k vehicle so corner cutting is expected. What really drove me away was the bumpy ride and super super light steering wheel, plus the drag. Yes when driving a carnival you can absolutely feel the weight, unlike Odyssey. Less nimble, way less. A big mark up was also asked.
In the end we are focusing on Atlas and Odyssey. I’m the kinda guy who does too much research when making big purchases. So I looked around to learn more about the reliability of both models. Sources include car forums, caredge, carcomplaints, consumer report etc. boy oh boy the more I look the less I want to buy car at all because issues are all over the place for both models. Hence now turning to the only place that matter, Reddit, to pick your guy’s brain. Which one I should go for?

2023.06.10 00:42 acadiareynolds Advice on buying a clubman

What should I look for in a clubman?
I found a 4wd ‘16 with 47k in my budget at 16.5k… seems suspicious
what is the best year to buy ?
I’m trying to stay under 20k I could technically afford more but I know repairs are expensive so I’m trying to stay under (I will be financing) I definitely want 2nd gen(16+) because I’ve read “they are as reliable as 90s Hondas” lol
on average how much do you think you can negotiate off the price of a clubman?, since they in general are harder to come by.
The (unnecessary) love story
I am looking to purchase a car in around 6 weeks so I’ve been testing out all the cars that come in at my job I decided I only really care about is leather seats sunroof and a backup camera since the cars I have a passion for are out of my budget even telling myself I have to be okay with something ugly and clunky.
Today my work(dealership) brought in a green 2020 clubman s. I’ve always enjoyed minis (rode in “third fastest hardtop on the east coast”) with a lot of friends owning hard tops but I just never thought I would be interested in one as they are a bit cramped. I am super into unique looking cars (05 ssr is a attainable dream car for me) so it instantly caught my eye. Still brushed it off then it goes for me to move it to our other lot. OMG that thing fit me perfectly checked off all my qualifications and looked cool while doing it. Then I drove it !!!!!! That thing just zips around unlike any car in our lot and I haven’t had fun driving a car .5mi before! Sadly they are selling it for 28k :( I almost cried i had no idea the price of minis bc I was never interested but I have decided I will do anything to own one of these beauties even if I can’t afford the s type right now.
Thanks for any advice or tidbits on the clubman !

2023.06.10 00:04 intrinsicstoner 2016 Jeep Cherokee Limited . Worth it?

I went through four different dealerships today. The most decent deal I could find is a 2016 Jeep Cherokee for $23000 CAD at 75000 km
I will be financing. I’m limited to financing because can’t afford to pay cash more than 3000$
Japanese is kind out of question. I’m in Windsor, Ontario and Honda, Toyota prices are way out of my budget.
I just need something that lasts a decade(ish). The car has good maintenance history and I will be continuing that pattern.
Please let me know what you think. Try not to judge ( first time buying car)🥲
Thank you

Japanese is kind out of question. I’m in Windsor, Ontario and Honda, Toyota prices are way out of my budget.
I just need something that lasts a decade(ish). The car has good maintenance history and I will be continuing that pattern.
Please let me know what you think. Try not to judge ( first time buying car)🥲
Thank you

2023.06.09 22:38 Triangable Trying to get an expectation check on buses.

I go to school at U of I at Urbana Champaign and one of my favorite things about being at school is that between buses bike lanes and the occasional ride share, I do not need my own car at all. This summer I am participating in an internship in Gaithersburg MD. The commute options here for me are either a 10-15 minute drive or a hour plus bus commute, assuming I time the busses well given 20 minute intervals (lack of bike lanes and two 4/6 lane roads means biking would be a death sentence). I really hope that we collectively move in the direction of reducing car dependency but can this happen if transit at the very least take four times as long as driving?
