2023.06.10 20:13 Party-Slip7598 what should i do with my stepdad with poor communication skills?
Hello everyone, I (23F) come to tell you a story of drama and tragedy: My father abandoned me since I was born, my mother raised me until I was 9 years old, then she met my stepfather, I liked him because I didn't have a father figure, at 12 my brother was born, whom I adored, my stepfather always tried to be equitable in the treatment he gave us, if he bought something for my brother then he would also buy me something, however, he is a person with low communication skills, he speaks very little and keeps everything within himself, of course I was always closer to my mother, however, passed away when I was 18 years old, my maternal family supported me the first year but I continued to live with my stepfather and brother (whom I always called by his name since I was ashamed to call him dad, although he has been the only father figure in my life). The following two years I tried to support my stepfather as much as possible in raising my brother, since he also suffered a lot from losing my mother, of course I made many mistakes with my brother, it was difficult for me to date friends since my priority was my brother, my social life was very low, everything was worse with the pandemic and the mandatory confinement, this year I had my first paid job, being virtual raised my stress and anxiety levels a lot, in the end I went Diagnosed with depression and I was on medication, I constantly ask my stepfather that he should communicate better to understand what is bothering him, since I am very open about it, but he doesn't, he keeps everything to himself and throws hints, with the medication I became like a zombie, without wanting to get up, my stepfather made comments about how lazy I was for not helping at home, and he did it in front of my brother, that bothered me a lot and I told him, but there were no changes, I decided to cut myself off for full of responsibilities with my brother, I'm just very tired, we live in the same house but we haven't talked for more than 2 months, I'm tired of asking him to talk to solve family problems and he doesn't have the initiative to communicate, I I feel very bad because he supported me when I was bad, but whenever I tried to improve our family environment he gets defensive, I want to clarify that I live with my family because I am studying at the university and finances are not the best, he is also a person extremely frugal, legally I am his daughter but I know that he has no responsibility with me, 1 day ago I had a crying episode because I heard how he spoke badly about me with my aunt saying that I am very lazy and that I never leave my room, I was very upset because he knows better than anyone how hard I work in my new job and how bad I feel emotionally. Any advice?

2023.06.10 20:12 mysterious_onion7744 WHY ARE SO MANY REQUIRED COURSES ONLY OFFERED FALL SEMESTER ?!?! I
Every year nearly every single required course ( or courses I’m interested in) towards my programs are only offered in fall. Does anyone else have this issue or is it just me? It’s super annoying because there’s no possible way for me to graduate on time and take the courses that interest me without taking more than five courses in fall or doing summer school😡😫. I struggle to find winter courses because every course I NEED or want to take is only in the fall. I feel like I’m wasting my winter semester because there’s no required courses and the electives I want to take are also in fall so I just have to fill my winter schedule with courses I don’t really want. Sorry for the rant but I need to know if anyone has a similar experience.

2023.06.10 20:12 CreamyZ UP FAMNIT course reviews and general tips
Hey! I'm locked in for spending the next (winter) semester at UP FAMNIT, so I'm looking which courses to pick.
Any current, past or ERASMUS students (computer science preferably) could describe some specific courses that
they offer for foreign students? The descriptions are quite vague, so any input from students would help a lot😊
Also general tips regarding the university, Koper and the region or just living would be appreciated!

2023.06.10 20:11 reds2032 Anyone know what this guy on my window is? Eastern Illinois
2023.06.10 20:11 unicornarealive Does it get better?
I’m about to finish my first year of teaching. For context: I’m 33 (f), after a couple of years in my previous career as a communications specialist i decided to switch careers and went back to university for my teaching degree in primary education. I worked as a teaching assistant to get an insight before starting with my second degree.
I work in an European country where teachers are compensated fairly (> 100k yearly). For the last year I taught first grade. After the summer break I’ll change schools to teach 4th grade.
I just don’t know if I can cope with the stress and mental load. I love working with children however the administrative work, lack of teaching and special ED personnel, high numbers of students with special needs or behavioral problems, meetings all the damn time, compulsory coursed, burnt out co-workers, parent’s expectations etc. HOW DO YOU IT? All I talk about in therapy is work. Sometimes i cry in bed, because I feel like I’m failing my students and myself. I was really excited to do this, however I’m afraid I’ll burn out.
Advice or sharing your experience is very appreciated.

2023.06.10 20:09 Excellent_Iron9483 Ten things each USMLE student should do
| Ten things each USMLE student should do (“You might feel like you know it all until you start getting into details! ”) I completely understand how daunting it feels to prepare for the USMLEs — a mountain of information to learn, questions with confusing choices that make it difficult to pick the “best” answer, and on top of all that, a strict time limit! I’m an Internal Medicine physician, an Assistant Professor at Brown University, USMLE STEP 2 CK tutor for Michigan State University, and an author of a USMLE STEP 2 CK textbook encompassing all topics for the boards ( Thieme: A WIN series for USMLE available online and in bookstores). In addition to a decade of teaching experience, I scored in the 99th percentile on all the 3 USMLE STEP exams and am currently creating an online USMLE question bank. I hope the following 10 pieces of advice will simplify your “road to residency”: - Use the “IRIS” steps to master USMLE topics. Input- Reflect- Integrate- Share
- Do as many practice questions as you possibly can ~The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get
- Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically.
- Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis.
- Use memory techniques to help you remember important details.
- Pomodoro!
- Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey.
- Get a USMLE-coach
- Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!)
- “The shortest path”
1. Use the “IRIS” steps: Input, R eflect, I ntegrate, and S hare — in order to master the USMLE topics. https://preview.redd.it/kcxcgtm0p75b1.png?width=1036&format=png&auto=webp&s=aeab3498231448f534cde68106c93db5d7006ee9 Reading a book (for example, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) but not reflecting on it and not integrating it into practice will result in the “illusion of learning.” Similarly, it is extremely crucial to practice IRIS to perfect your craft of USMLE preparedness. Books serve as a great base camp for your knowledge ascents. Choose any USMLE book- a comprehensive book you can reflect upon — for annotation, highlights, and other important notes/personalized mnemonics. - For Step 1, there seems to be a consensus of a clear-cut winner being First Aid for Step 1.
- For Step 2, go to your university library (online/virtual), scan a few of the most popular books, and find one that fits your style. Then stick to the “chosen one” for your learning journey.
Shameless ad: the textbook I authored (Thieme: A WIN book) is also a concise yet thorough book you may choose to utilize for Step 2 CK or Step 3. Check it out! 2. Do as many practice questions as you possibly can. The more you practice questions, the better your scores will get. - Finish all Uworld questions (tutored mode, chapter by chapter; learning one topic at a time improves clarity and efficiency).
- Then finish the 2 Uworld sim forms, the free 120 NBME questions, and NBME practice exams (in the timed mode — to simulate real exam and to practice time management).
- Also, try to finish as many Amboss questions as you can. If you finish Amboss too and have extra time and want to be a superstar student, you could even finish Kaplan Qbank along the way!
A suggested timeline for a 2-month USMLE Step 2 study schedule: - Complete the entire Step 2 CK UWorld in the first month (averaging around 80–100 questions per day). Focus on the learning objectives of each question and move on — you don’t need to memorize the entire explanation (example demonstrated below).
- Then, for the next month, do an NBME self-assessment every week to assess your progress. Also, this month, focus on your NBME deficiencies (target your weaknesses, do not run away from them), and attempt to finish the Amboss Qbank.
Links: to NBME, UWORLD, and Amboss 3. Tackle multiple-choice questions strategically. Step 1: Start by reading the last sentence of the question — this will save some time and will help guide your attention to the specific thing that the question is asking. How does this save time? With some questions, you don’t necessarily need to read the entire question to pick the correct answer. For instance: Which of the following medications will help with ureteral stone expulsion? The answer, in this case, is tamsulosin. You don’t have to read the entire question stem to answer this question! Time can be saved for other harder questions you will encounter later in that block. And, if you are doing practice questions from a Qbank, you don’t NEED to read the whole explanation. The goal of this question is to understand that alpha-1 blockers help with ureteral smooth muscle relaxation making it easier for the stone to pass. That’s all; just move on to the next question. Another tip to save even more time: For really long question stems and lots of lab values, you could jump to the last two lines and scan the labs to note any specific abnormal lab values that might’ve been presented to help answer the question even faster. For example, a long clinical vignette that ultimately says “antiGBM antibody positive”: This line alone gives you the diagnosis of Goodpasture’s syndrome, so you can proceed to answer the question. Step 2: If the last line (or scanning the labs) isn’t enough, you must read the whole question. The most efficient way to answer the majority of questions is to follow these steps: - Read the question stem and highlight the pertinent findings.
- Make the diagnosis.
- Choose the answer based on your diagnosis.
Some students tend to fall into the trap of reading the question stem and then trying to reason through each of the answers before committing to a diagnosis, which is inefficient, as it leads to many back-and-forths. To reach the diagnosis, focus on your highlighted portions of the question stem. Those are the puzzle pieces that you need to connect to figure out the diagnosis. For instance: - Hoarse voice + weight gain + 1+reflexes in all extremities + proximal muscle weakness = Hypothyroidism
- Hirsutism + easy bruising + proximal muscle weakness = Cushing syndrome
(As a last step, ask yourself whether all the puzzle pieces fit into the diagnosis you have in mind. To double-check, consider whether your diagnosis fits the patient’s age, chief complaint, and course or severity of the disease. If not, you probably don’t have the right diagnosis and need to re-think i t). 4. Focus on figuring out the right diagnosis. But how you may ask. Let me break this down even further for you. To answer USMLE questions correctly, you need to master the art of making the right diagnosis — an art that can be learned by clustering different conditions with similar features and then recognizing the features that set them apart. https://preview.redd.it/fild67zdq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=a16058a9c5ded78f1fd3701a825c993df155da69 Example: HOW TO APPROACH IMMUNODEFICIENCY QUESTIONS? https://preview.redd.it/2zddp8a5e85b1.png?width=1584&format=png&auto=webp&s=f9a01601bd5fbe9cefc5a5fc88b3dcea74e6f1bc Further practice: Click on the following links to practice a few questions dedicated to learning of clustering and differentiating method: Remember, no matter how prepared you are, you will always feel uncertain about some questions, and that’s okay. Just use your best judgment, flag it, and move on. Chances are that you might have a fresh perspective on the question when you come back to it later. 5. Use memory techniques to help you remember important details Memorizing various pieces of medical information (for example, differentiating features of diseases, management steps, cut-off values, etc.) is key for acing an exam. Use memory-retaining techniques and tools, such as associations, mnemonics, the popular flashcard app ANKI, etc. Example: New onset ascites generally require diagnostic paracentesis. The two most important things you look for in ascitic fluid are SAAG and neutrophil count. - SAAG (serum ascites albumin gradient) = serum albumin concentration — (minus) albumin concentration in ascitic fluid
- What is the cut-off of SAAG? 1.1.
- How to remember? SAAG: “AA”= “1” and “1” because “A” is the 1st alphabet. So, the important SAAG value is 1.1. Elevated SAAG (>1.1) is elevated portal pressure.
https://preview.redd.it/emo0d5zjq75b1.png?width=1382&format=png&auto=webp&s=b87580625183237422dc705f08b5c3e0868bc203 Don’t build buildings without foundations. Don’t use rote memorization. Use (or even better, create your own) memory associations/mnemonics whenever possible. * Ascitic neutrophil count of ≥ 250/mm3 is diagnostic of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Example 2: How to tackle questions of Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia? https://preview.redd.it/9q58a3plq75b1.png?width=1628&format=png&auto=webp&s=62de1716c6d57cd8baeaf64ecc020f58640a6108 Here is a link to a practice question on Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (to integrate what you learned). Here is a link to information on one of the students’ favorite tools: Anki cards. This is particularly helpful for step 1. I also advise students to make their own Anki flashcards (based on UW incorrect, cross-referencing your chosen book as you make the cards). This reflective and integrative act of making cards is one of the best ways to retain information. 6. Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique The most important strategy for productivity is the Pomodoro (RAM refreshment) technique; Do 25 minutes of USMLE-focused study prep time (with no distractions like your cell phone or TV), followed by 5 mins break. Then, refresh and repeat. (Some students prefer 50 mins study time and 10 mins breaks.) Pomodoro breaks your work(study) time into portions and gives some rest time for the brain to come back much more refreshed. This provides the much-needed reset to your productivity decline after 25 to 50 mins of study (improving overall efficiency and preventing burnout). I have seen some students working on their computers during this 5 min break. This isn’t RAM refreshment. (Get up from that chair, go out of that room, and de-strain your eyes and your body posture!) Here is a link to a great Chrome extension for this. It also measures your total study time. 7. Use exams, particularly shelf exams, to guide your learning journey. If you start following these 10 pieces of advice from the beginning of shelf exams, by the time you take your USMLE Step 2, you will have mastered all its topics (and you may need a quick refresher, that’s it!). Example: During your 3rd year, use the IRIS steps: do UWorld questions subject by subject and take NBME clinical mastery for Shelf Exams. Processing one subspeciality (chapter) at a time also improves clarity and efficiency — a lean-learning principle as opposed to batch processing. Isn’t shelf preparation automatic portioning? Note: A 1–2-month time frame for USMLE preparation doesn’t typically give you enough time to follow ALL the IRIS steps. Also, during this time, a common example of batch processing occurs where students generate a practice-question block choosing all the system topics in UWorld instead of honing in and tackling one topic at a time. 8. Get a USMLE coach All athletes have coaches; why don’t we? You can get online USMLE tutoring/mentoring or seek a well-qualified USMLE tutor through your university. There is no shame in asking an expert for help to improve any areas of weakness. When I go on my snowboarding trips, I always seek a few snowboarding lessons to accelerate my learning process. Another shameless ad — I tutor on the Wyzant online platform. Here is a link to a $40 OFF for your first class. I also do free weekly 1-hr Zoom sessions (Wednesday at 6 pm EST) on “how to get better at tackling USMLE questions” that anybody can participate in— here is the link. Has there ever been any Olympic athlete who won a gold medal without the help of a coach? 9. Take care of your USMLE vessel (YOU!) Take proper care of your physical and mental health -Since I love mnemonics, here’s another one! SEE well to do USMLE well: Sleep, Eat, and Exercise: - Sleep: at least 7–8 hours every day to recharge your body at night (Don’t partially charge your phone overnight only to run out of battery by noon)
- Eat healthy foods
- Exercise regularly
10. Always take the shortest path There might be an infinite number of ways to go from point A to point B, but there is only one shortest path. Finding the shortest path frees up some time to do other activities in our limited number of hours in a given day. So try to maximize efficiency. Perhaps, the shortest path to achieving high scores on USMLE is to start following these 10 pieces of advice NOW !! I hope this short thread on “how to learn!!” will help you on your road to residency! Appendix: Exam question schema: — In some USMLE questions, the question creators add a detail that tries to derail you through a red herring. Examples: “A family history of a neurological disorder in a case that sounds like chronic tuberculous meningitis,” “a recent camping trip history in a case that appears to be Neisseria meningitis,” “ a malignant head tumor that was noticed after head trauma” etc. So in most USMLE questions, — you need the following schematic understanding: https://preview.redd.it/dw1kitozq75b1.png?width=936&format=png&auto=webp&s=b71305adbac7e9204789f2665d711e9bbdcba349 “Thank you for taking the time to read our article. 2023.06.10 20:04 Local_Fennel_7969 Discovering our favorite wine by Joel Oman
When we think of wine, we picture traditional dry, fruity, or oaky varieties amongst Reds, Whites and Rose. Though some, like myself, enjoy all varieties of wine. In order to come to our own individual conclusions, we must understand the differences amongst the vast varieties of wine.
My adventures with wine have taken place over the past 15 years. I was 21 when I first discovered my love of wine. While many a young 21-year-olds desire to prove their adulthood and dive right into binge drinking beer and liquor as a sense of right of passage. I decided to become a wine snob.
What started with the preference of a dry chardonnay turned into appreciation of a full-bodied red pinot noir and finally a thorough appreciation and admiration for rose. Given that my preference had been for a drier variety. My ignorance told me rose must be fruity and therefore simply, not for me. I was introduced to rose later in life by a friend of mine who proved my theories completely wrong about rose. I was therefore introduced to one of the driest and tastiest wines I had ever had, La-Vieille Ferme Rose. Though rose wine comes with aromas of strawberries, cherries, or florals. There is at times a sweetness which can also range to a very dry glass of wine. I love that rose is known for shining due to its light and crisp bright characteristics. Rose can be treated as either white and chilled or much like red and left at room temperature. Rose wine gets its various colors from light to pink from its blend of red and white grapes. On a hot summer day a chilled glass of rose goes great with meats and cheeses.
Were the thoughts of a chilled rose on a hot summer day on a patio with delicious meats and cheeses enough to replace my love of white wine? Not hardly! My admiration for white wine comes from its dry and light-bodied characteristics, with aromas that may include citrus, apples, or pears. The flavor of white wine is refreshing. Compared to Rose, white wine has a much higher acidity level and ranges in color from yellow to a straw like yellow. White wine is ideal with the accompaniment of lighter foods and compliment shellfish, white fish and of course chicken.
Of course, I find myself always returning to reds. Red wines are full-bodied and earthy, with aromas of red and black fruits, plum, spice, tobacco, and leather. Red wines are tannic, with a velvety texture, and notes of black cherry, dark chocolate, and mocha. They are best served at room temperature to allow their complexity to open up. I find that even though I now drink rose and white most of the time. Some of my fondest memories are shared with a glass of red. I can’t think of a better style of wine to order while out to dinner on a date or purchasing to celebrate a special occasion. Since rose and white wine have become my go to most of the time. I now hold a special place for reds. Some of my favorite dishes such as pasta and beef are a perfect match for red wine. Red can accompany a warm evening or a cold winter’s night. Overall, all three types of wine offer something unique and enjoyable.

2023.06.10 20:01 anibanieee I’m a bad person
I truly don’t know where to start so just bear with me, please…
Me and my boyfriend have been dating for almost 10 months. I’ve had a huge crush on him for years and when we first started dating at the end of summer we were both over the moon happy. But around October my mental health really went ⬇️⬇️. But he was there for me, there like no one ever was before. It was hard on both of us. But back then he was loving, he showed me so much love and affection. He reminded me daily that I was the most loved woman on earth, he expressed his love, we made time for each other. Of course long distance is never easy, but the first few months just flowed, everything was perfect. But around March we stopped being sexual, then our calls got shorter and his texts throughout the day got fewer and fewer. I stopped feeling his warmth and I genuinely started feeling him as a very close friend rather than a boyfriend. He was going through a rough spot, he was studing way too much for his own good, but I was there, I waited for him every day past 11PM my time (10PM his time). But then it got to the point where I completely had to carry the relationship, the conversations and everything. But it got to the point where I’m starting to lose feelings for him, I’m tired of putting all the effort all on my own, I’m tired of not feeling like I’m loved, I’m tired of feeling like I’m never going to be a priority in his life, in his world. I constantly plan things: I planned him a picnic when we saw each other a month or so ago; I constantly invent games for him to earn nudes and so on; I buy him gifts all the times; Heck I’ve given him more flowers than he’s given me.
I think I’ve developed feelings for a friend/acquaintance of mine. Today I went to an event- just for her, but she didn’t show up because she was with her girlfriend. I genuinely got super jealous and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I love my boyfriend, I really do, but I feel like he’s losing me and I feel completely out of control. I don’t want to ruin my relationship or her relationship, but I’m extremely unhappy in my relationship. We’ve had countless of talks but they never get anywhere. He knows I need affection and yet he can’t give it to me and that really hurts me. I just want to love and be loved, but his lack of affection really turns me off from doing things for him- like games, posting him on the gram and so on.
P.S my boyfriend has a good and honest heart. He could never cheat on me so no- he hasn’t fallen in love with someone else. He’s just not the type of person to do it.

2023.06.10 19:57 kirmi_zek How to invest in myself as a math undergrad?
Hi all, I'm a 3rd year undergrad student. I want to have a career in data science. I've done some machine learning projects in Python, and plan to learn SQL and AWS in summer while also doing more projects.
I have a very limited budget that I want to invest in myself for my education: literally 35 dollars LOL. It's not a lot, but I want to buy/subscribe to something with it if possible. What kind of online education websites can I subscribe to except Udemy courses? I've thought about getting a premium membership for Leetcode, but is it really beneficial? I don't really feel the need to watch videos to understand code solutions and I don't know if it offers anything more useful. My budget is also not enough for the crash course it offers.
Any help/insight is appreciated!

2023.06.10 19:54 SwitchbladeLobotomy Always respect the forest when you go camping. (Part 2)
Part 1 It’s been a day, and still no sign of anyone coming by. I was really hoping to be writing this in the comfort of my home, but apparently there’s other plans for me.
I’ve been out of food and water, it’s all back at the campsite and I can’t rightly go back there.
I guess I’ll keep on reliving what was going on, maybe that’ll make time pass faster.
Ivy and I had dashed away into the woods, the late evening sun rushing through the trees alongside us. We heard the panicked yells and footfalls of our friends as they also fled, and we knew the ranger would likely be close behind us.
As fucked up as this is, I could only hope and pray that he’d follow after them instead of us.
We ran for what felt like an hour, but from the lack of darkness, I know it couldn’t have been that long. The sun was going down slowly, lazily, like it does in the summer. At least Ivy had killed the guy’s ATV, he’d have to follow on foot…
Although with how big the fucker was, his strides were probably long enough that was a negligible issue. Shit.
We stopped for a breather, the woods still eerily silent. We could no longer hear screams, or hurried footsteps. Just our breathing, trying as best we can to keep quiet.
After some time, we started moving again, slower now. The light was starting to fade, and we decided our best course of action was to try and walk back to the cars and go get help. Of course, there was hardly any signal at the cars, and absolutely none once we got into the woods proper, but we hoped we could get through to 911, if nothing else.
I looked to one side as I stood up, and on my left, I could see a phone flashlight cutting through the branches, bobbing with each step. From where it was being held, it likely wasn’t tall enough to be the officer. I squinted, and once it got a bit closer, I could make out the distraught features of Greg, Jeremy’s brother. His girlfriend, Loretta, was close behind. Both of them looked like they’d been crying, which was… understandable, I guess.
Greg looked at Ivy and I, squinting past his light. “You guys seen him?”
We both shook our heads, and Loretta rolled her eyes. “I told you we should just go, Greg.”
He snapped his head back to her, a glare on his face. “We
all need to get out of here, babe. I don’t wanna leave anyone behind.”
Before Loretta could respond, the sound of metal scraping on metal was heard, like in a movie when a knife is pulled from a sheath. I turned my head again, and saw the large, imposing figure of the ranger.
He stood about ten feet off, holding a hatchet in one hand. “Hey, there, kiddos. Using lights at night in the forest can really disturb the local flora and fauna of this here forest.”
With that sentence that sounded straight out of a PSA, he Hurled the hatchet, the head of it finding purchase in Greg’s thigh. He let out a scream and collapsed to the ground, holding the handle of the small axe as he writhed on the ground. The ranger grinned, the last few rays of sunlight illuminating his face enough to let us see his sick joy at the turn of events.
Loretta screamed and bolted back in the way her and Greg had come, and he looked after her for only a moment, before looking at Ivy and I. “Go on, get the hell out of here! Go!”
Ivy hesitated for a moment, clearly wanting to help, but at the first footfall from the ranger, they nodded and took off, me following closely behind. As we took off, we could hear one last defiant shout from Greg.
“Fucking do it then! You goddamn freak! DO IT! Fucking ki-”
The word was cut off by the sound of impact on flesh, over and over. Eventually we ran far enough to escape the sound, and collapsed on the forest floor, breathing heavily.
We heard heavy footsteps treading, but not getting closer to us. They went parallel to us, eventually fading out into the night air.
We sat for about 20 minutes, listening for any sign of pursuit, or any sign of our friends. Right when we were about to get up and keep walking, we heard what sounded like a rope moving quickly? I can’t quite think of the words to describe it. It was close, we ran towards the sound and in about five minutes we saw Luke hanging upside-down from a tree, his bag resting on the ground near his head.
He looked at us as we approached, and quickly started shouting for help. Ivy and I both tried to shush him, but he wouldn’t listen, and we quickly heard the ranger making his way through the trees towards us again.
Luke seemed to realize what was coming, and he started screaming louder. Not for help, now, though. For Adam, for his mother, for God, anyone who could maybe hear him and send some giant eagles his way, so to speak.
The ranger emerged from the brush again, looking at his newly caught quarry with another grin. His uniform was stained with splatters of blood now, although his face was clean. His hatchet was tucked into his belt, now, and he was carrying a small bag on his back.
“Now, in this here forest we practice catch, tag, and release. These here snares are for catching, now I’ll tag, and then release.”
Luke tried to swing away from the man, but he reached behind the tree and pulled on a rope, and the snare gave suddenly, with Luke falling violently.
Due to his momentum in trying to swing away from the man, he didn’t land on his shoulder or have time to put his arms up to break his fall. He landed face first in the dirt, at a steep angle. His neck snapped, as did his back, and he folded over himself, his feet coming to rest near his head. His body gave one final shudder, and a wheezing, rattling gasp, before falling quiet.
The ranger cocked his head to one side, seemingly puzzled. I couldn’t help but think of a meme Ivy had sent me before this trip, asking why animals cock their heads when they see something strange.
What, does it make more sense at a 45 degree angle, bud? The ranger coughed, still staring at Luke’s body. “Well. That, uh… Huh.”
He looked genuinely surprised, before shrugging and walking towards us.
Ivy, who’d been looking at Luke as well, a green tinge to their face, snapped their head up at the movement and bolted. I turned to watch them go, barely turning my head back to see the ranger swinging a fist at my head.
I yelped and dropped to my knees, barely dodging the swing. He snarled and tried to grab my hair, but I was able to dart between his legs and kick at the back of his left knee. He grunted and stumbled as I felt around wildly in the dirt. A solid stick, a rock, surely something here could help me…
The ranger stood back up, looming over me with a scowl. “Y’know, in this here forest we do our best to keep the paths clear. You’re not likely to find much that’ll help you bash my skull in, miss.”
He grabbed me by the shoulders and lifted me off the ground, dirt still between my fingers. Desperately, as he lifted me to his eye level, I ripped off his sunglasses with one hand, flinging dirt into his eyes with the other.
The ranger swore, dropping me and rubbing at his face. I took the opportunity and darted into the woods, in the general direction that I saw Ivy run.
Bedding down again for the night. Like I said, there’s barely any signal out here, all my calls have been dropping before they can get anywhere. Gonna try and conserve battery on my phone, keep my hazards on and hope that someone comes by.

2023.06.10 19:52 DrSuperZeco I've finally experienced the feeling of being 'chased', wanted and desired. The feeling of sitting and working while someone likes me and wants me sitting right next to me. Today I learned what the age gap meant. I'm crushed.
I'm working on my research from a coffee shop known to be a hangout for University students, particularly medical students. Its the kind of place where if someone speaks out loud people would shush them. Almost like a library.
About a month ago I noticed a girl acting weird around me. She's pretty and all and had University stickers on her laptop. Guessed in her 20s.
I ignored her and kept working to meet my deadline. Until it was obvious to everyone in this place that she's crushing on me and it reached a point where I can't really focus on my work because she's almost on my lap. As much as I loved everything about her and the feelings she was giving me, I didn't want to engage in meaningless interaction and have a relationship just for fun. Until few weeks ago her friends were saying out loud that she wants a serious relationship that ends with marriage (we are middle easterns, go figure).
That was clear hint for me, so I took it. Said hello, and started talking...
I've been wanting a relationship probably all my life and I've approached many over the years. I kept my match range to 28-32 for the sake of age gap (I'm turning 40 in few months).
She's half my age, my friends told me if you find someone willing to be in relationship with you dont turn it down. My sister knows how long I've been wanting one but never been lucky. I'm not ugly, or bad in anyway. I guess it just was never meant for me to meet the right person.
I spent the past couple of weeks trying to overcome the age gap. And this girl is like a cat, whenever you try to send her away she would come back. Put that in broken lonely heart of mine context... its really painful.
Today, I learned that her father is one year older than me.
That crushed me.
Not because I'm giving up on the potential of us. But the fact that THIS is what I've lost. Having children. Seeing my children grow up in front of me. Seeing them go to University. Meeting their partners. All of that... all is gone. And I'm seeing in front of me what I've missed. And it wasn't missed by choice. I wanted it with all my heart. It just never happened.

2023.06.10 19:51 Eskerna_Luka The harmful side of the LGBTQ+ movement (very long post, take time).
Me and my friends have been studying and interacting with the LGBTQ+ offline and online for years. This article sums up our views towards some LGBTQ+-related issues. However, before coming to address that, I must insist on taking this position of mine without presuming that I am victimizing myself or intentionally unjustly painting the LGBTQ+ movement as a whole in bad image. The reason for this is that the people who instantly jump into such conclusions are also parts of the problem I am going to talk about. This post is going to be political (not American politics or online teenage banter), so if you are not happy to dwell into this area, decide for yourself before continuing.
Firstly, I would like to point out how oversexual many LGBTQ+ members are. By this, I do not mean that they must not argue for their rights, nor do I mean that every conversation they talk is about LGBTQ+ rights. Some people would take that as a reason to say the LGBTQ+ is forcing LGBTQ+ to their throats, but I do not think so. Our (me and my pals) problem is that almost every conversation which these LGBTQ+ folks participate in, they bring up wild sex without any sort of manner. Although they are not provoking us or something, neither is it that me and the fellers do not enjoy sex and attempt to find out the best methods for the finest sex, but we do not treat our daily life as mere sex. I also understand some non-LGBTQ+ people do talk about sex as much as these folks I mentioned, but not in my country, and my environment.
Here is the tricky part. For the person reading this, you must understand that whether or not a person is open to sexual conversations is, especially if you are from Europe or the United States, you may be completely fine, or mostly fine with having such talks daily. You believe that behavior is just, which I understand, that is your culture. I am not from the West, me and the folks are from what Western commenters enjoy calling the "third world." We have a different culture from the West, pretty much every other nation has different cultures from the West. Even the West has different cultures from other Western countries. So what you think as just might not be just for other countries. For example, if in your country, having a lot of body counts is a virtue while not in another country, you are obligated to respect that. For us, it is not just at all to have such an unregulated amount of sexual comments during the chatter. This is also a fact for everything other than sex, which I feel that a lot of people cannot grasp.
Unaccusingly speaking, the LGBTQ+ movement originates from the West. There, LGBTQ+ people are open to sex alongside a bunch of other stuff other cultures condemn. They talk about sex freely, and enjoy it freely. You can find a lot of articles from LGBTQ+ writers promoting sex and sexual styles. I understand, you do you in your country. The point is that Western powers colonized my country during the colonial era and it was also them who introduced the prostitutes and sexualized our women, as well as breaking our traditions and suppressing our religions and beliefs, while importing that of the West. The whole deal with the LGBTQ+ members in my country being too open towards sex seems a bit too familiar, considering the entirety of their lives surrounds what people from Western countries do. It is always "Western people do that, let us do that too." On LGBTQ+ subreddits, it is also very common for writers to condemn nations who have an apparently less open approach towards the LGBTQ+ movement. We can see a pattern of what the elites of a certain LGBTQ+ community have been attempting.
However, Western or not, globalization is happening and it is not only the West's culture that is affecting ours. We have viewed this through the lens of the struggle between nations, and it is only the matter of whether or not the readers of this post has done the same before coming to conclusions.
Secondly, it happens to an amount of LGBTQ+ people that somehow they are the center of the universe. Again, this is not meant to say that they do not have the right to address their oppression, however, I do believe this is both common for my country and the world that some LGBTQ+ folks are too egoistic for society's good. What I am trying to make clear is that, for example, my friend has been asked by a gay man whether or not he would want to date a gay man. He said no, and in a conversation with me, this gay person said my friend was just being jealous of not being as manly as he is. LGBTQ+ supporter pals also seem to cherish this guy's thoughts.
When men disagree with LGBTQ+ agendas, it is common for them to receive insults that they "are not a real man" from the community. When women do that, they also receive similar insults. It is a hypocrisy to fight for gender and sexual equality and liberation, but consider oneself the only true and just, while the others are mere barbarians looking for enlightenment.
Thirdly, a few LGBTQ+ sexual harassers have been rather more creepy than the average non-LGBTQ+ creeps, and they know how to take advantage of the LGBTQ+ movement. For instance, a few months ago, my middle-aged male colleague once was almost taken advantage of by a young male "genderfluid" person. It was at the end of the shift, and we were going home for lunch to prepare for the afternoon shift. I heard a lot of shouting voices from the department he worked in. It turned out that this genderfluid individual came to him and asked to have sex with him. He, of course, as much as he respected our culture and his duty to his wife and children, refused. The gender fluid person then grabbed his arm and insisted on having sex. My colleague, again, calmly said no. The other person had a breakdown and started calling my colleague a creep who been creeping on them for a long time. Other people heard the shouting and surrounded them. Insults were beginning to be thrown towards my colleague, a few people even went so far as to push my colleague around. It was only until the guards came that the truth was told. That genderfluid person did not come to work that afternoon. Our boss came to us and asked for what happened, he showed us screenshots of the genderfluid person claiming that we ganged up on him, sexually harassed him, insulted him, and attacked him physically. When our boss showed us the chat, the person has already unsent all of their messages.
This behavior is, to be honest, not uncommon at all. Online LGBTQ+ members and supporters have the same behavior when their agendas are questioned, or people dislike certain traits of their personalities, or when their wrongdoings are justly brought out to the light. Celebrities like Erza Miller have had similar breakdowns. Even certain United States politicians do that. Breakdowns are common for rude and egoistic people, but when gender, sexuality and a gender-based political movement is used as the justification, it is a much greater problem. Some people say such behaviors are understandable, because they root in the LGBTQ+'s oppression and mental health problems caused by abuse. That argument is but sophism.
Last but not least, it strikes us that certain parts of the pro-LGBTQ+ arguments usually found on online articles are misleading at best. For example, three years ago, movement supporters focused on attempting to prove that being an LGBTQ+ person was a biological necessity, however, a lot of LGBTQ+ members have now considered it to be simply a choice. In fact, it is a choice. Some members of the older generations also have sexual urges the LGBTQ+ have. However, they still decide to be the traditional male-female, male-to-female, and female-to-male. Supporters claim our parental generations are usually male-female only because the LGBTQ+ was more oppressed back then. However, this argument presumes that the older generations feel oppressed for not having the right to be the LGBTQ+, which is a fallacy.
It is a matter of fact that many people only become the LGBTQ+ after they have seen articles, or heard other people, or seen members of the movement promoting it. People usually adopt lifestyles they consider new, alien and exotic. In this day and age, that mentality is even more prominent than ever. It should not be hard to understand that lots of people only adopt LGBTQ+ lifestyles after they have seen it. This is not to mention that lots of teens and children are being groomed to become parts of the LGBTQ+ too.
Supporters give the argument that the media helps LGBTQ+ people find out their sexuality and gender. However, this argument makes the assumption that people are already LGBTQ+, which is also a fallacy. While there are a few (in contradiction to the numerous LGBTQ+ folks claiming to be nowadays) people who do have certain feelings leaning towards an LGBTQ+ lifestyle, as I have said, they can choose. In conclusion, the articles are not intended to "help" people "find out" anything, rather, they are written to lead people to adopt the intended sexuality and gender.
Another point to give is how some individuals only seem to have become more sensitive, felt upset, or go so far as to get depressed over gender issues after they have seen the media presenting them in such light. While it is true that a lot of people are harassed for being parts of the movement, however, if you pay attention, it is evident that the media has been influencing people to adopt extreme feelings. Notice the words that are used, the statistics, the images, the stories, the so-called evidences. Most articles are but designed.
That is all we have to say. You tell us what you think in the comment.

2023.06.10 19:47 weirdturtle_ AITA for being the other woman.
Ok this is a long story that lasts about 4 years, but I promise it’s a weird one and I’m going to leave out a bunch and try to tell the most important details to make it as short as possible. At the time I was 18 and had met a guy my freshman year of college, he was sweet, we got drunk and hooked up. Mind you I wasn’t the only girl this year he had slept with, he was with a lot of girls before we met and I even found out there was another one at the same time as me. We started hanging out more and it was fun, we became really close and had a fun friend group, then it came out he was in an “open” relationship with a girl in his home town still in high school. He told all of us he tried breaking up with her multiple times but she would threaten to harm herself if he ever did. They ended up actually breaking up towards the end of the school year and after that we continued to hang out, he and another friend even came to visit me that summer in my home town and meet my family. Then the next school year guess who decided to show up and go to college at the same university… the ex. He gets up one morning and says he has to do some errands, so I let him borrow my car so that I could continue laying in bed, about an hour later I get a notification he’s coming back with the ex and I needed to leave his bed(mind you he is in MY CAR). So I am pissed, they get back together we stop anything that was happening between us, I end up forgiving him overtime blah blah we hang out as friends time goes on. The ex always hated me because I was a girl and she didn’t want him to have any girl friends, she was horrible and toxic, and lost any friends she ever made and was always in drama… should have been a red flag I would think. Eventually one of the girls I know decided to tell her we had a thing our entire freshman year, and through the summer. She flips out says he has to drop all his friends blocks me on everything from his phone and I know nothing about what’s happening. She ends up texting me saying she has forced him to break contact with me for the time begging so they can heal their relationship. All I know is he has become my best friend and I had no one to surf with and do my normal routine with, it really hurt me and I was in a bad place for a while. This whole time she would message me saying I was a whore, had no morals, and spread countless rumors about me. After doing all this she then makes him stay home from all the Halloween parties, and wouldn’t let him see friends on his birthday which was right after, but he was too deeply in love at this point to notice anything. He lost all of his friends in the end anyway for how he played me and her in the situation. After his favorite time of year is over and she made it miserable for him she broke up with him in the morning and told him to never speak to her again. He then texts me, and asks to surf. I was still really angry at this point but I just missed my best friend and was in a really bad spot mentally so I agreed. This is when I found out they had broke up, and that’s the only reason he had wanted to hang out again. I was hurt because I had deeply fallen for him and he had lied and broken my heart multiple times, then to find out the only reason he was wanting to see me was being she broke up with him and he had no one. He is my kryptonite I can’t help it so we became close again, still not hooking up or anything just friends. She ends up texting him after and playing with him, having him come over to hook up convincing him they have a chance to get back together. One night she texts him saying she took a bunch of pills trying to OD, he runs over there worried she’s not ok and it ends up she took two migraine meds which is not an OD. They hooked up again that night and after she told everyone he took advantage of her because she was in an intoxicated state from too many pills… like what??? You took two migraine meds?? So at this point he is over it and at home all the time sad over this chick. Well she joined my sorority, and at a sisterhood event she walks up to me point blank and says “I heard you hit it raw I need to know if you have anything”. Like I’m sorry what??? Not the time or the place, not ok. Then she proceeds to yell at me for being horrible and tells the whole story of how they were never in an open relationship, they never broke up besides for about a week or two at the end of summer, and turns out he had been actually cheating on her with me the entire time, including over the summer when he had said they broke up. I was pissed, he lied the entire time, we didn’t talk for a few months because I never knew I had actually helped him truly cheat, but this gave him time to grow. It came out that the ex had slept with his best friend at home while he was at college anyway that year, the ex continued bad talking me to everyone, she then started sleeping around campus, and overall just exactly what I would expect from her. Eventually I forgave him, we became friends again, and he definitely starting growing for the better. At the beginning of the year he had let her borrow his mini fridge and coffee pot in the dorms so he texted her to say he needed them and asked if he could pick them up because she decided to leave after the semester, the only reason she came was to chase him, why would she stay. She ends up spraying whatever food she had all over the inside of the fridge, letting it sit and get all moldy and disgusting, then chucked it outside of her dorm and told him to come get it. Last I heard she moved home to her toxic family, and is doing nothing with her life as he was her entire life. I hate this girl with a burning passion, and she is a nut case for many instances I haven’t shared on here, but at the same time I feel for her and understand what it’s like to be cheated on… but she also cheated on him at the same time. Now almost two years later the guy has done a lot of self growth and has actually become an amazing person, he treats me well, and is very faithful after finding out what it feels to be heartbroken and betrayed by his best friend from when he slept with the ex. We are now together, and he really makes me happy, but I have this constant feeling over my head that I am a horrible person for ending up with him. The whole thing made me question everything about me, and I feel horrible for helping him cheat but I never knew I was, she was states away and he was a good liar. She made my life miserable for a year, and I never understood why she was so horrible to me until it all came out. So overall I’m just wondering, am I the asshole in this situation? Was it all my fault?

2023.06.10 19:45 StatFlow Is Webflow University the best learning resource? Or is there an alternative Webflow course (paid?) that is better for beginners?
Fully willing to pay if it’s a super high quality course, but only if it’s actually better and valuable. If not, then is Webflow University simply the best way to get started with Webflow? Thanks!

2023.06.10 19:45 Fast-Wall-8420 My (21F) boyfriend (21M) went dancing last night
My bf and I have been together for 6 years. bf is an administrative assistant for a summer school held in our hometown. People from across the world are coming for two weeks for this course. I was so happy for him because he loves learning new languages and learning about others cultures; this was a great opportunity for him. He grew closer with the students and began hanging out with them outside of class almost every day. This is normally fine by me, but he also began to become incredible cryptic, would take hours to respond to my messages, and would never fully tell me what he was doing, where he was, or who he was with. Our communication declined and I tried talking to him but nothing changed. I knew he was texting one of the girls in the class (let’s call her Amanda). It eventually got to the point where I was sketched out with my bfs behavior and looked at his messages ( I know this was wrong, and I have apologized). I found that he had deleted his entire chat history with Amanda. I calmly brought this up to him and he stated he deleted the chat to “protect mine and his feelings” because he “knew I’d be upset about him texting a girl”. Yes I do have a track record of being jealous, and he has a track record of making me uncomfortable with girls he talks to and hiding things from me. Yesterday, I saw a Venmo receipt from Amanda to my bf for “awesomeness”. Again I brought this up with my bf and he says that a group of students, including him and Amanda were going to a bad bunny DJ concert at a small venue in our town (party/club-like vibes). This set me off; I told him how uncomfortable he has been making me and tried expressing my feelings but only got shut down, gaslight into thinking I’m the problem. I overall left the convo feeling unheard and manipulated. My bf went to the concert thing and I haven’t heard a thing since (been about 15 hrs)
This was the straw that broke the camels back for me in this relationship. He has not called/texted/checked up on me at all. It’s quite scary seeing how little he cares about my feelings. I feel like I should break up him, but I don’t know if I should wait for him to try to talk or fix things? I feel so lost, alone and hurt. I’d love to hear if you have any advice.
