I've had this idea for a character for awhile now. The thematic synergy between these two subclasses is just too juicy to ignore, and I think its probably the best way to build to utilize the melee damage from Symbiotic Entity "SE" (unless you think FighteMonk/Barbarian would be better). I am aware that building for melee damage on a Spore Druid is a bit of a trap, but it seems super fun to play with this kind of multiclass build and I'd like to see how we can best make it work. The general idea is to use Gathered Swarm to push enemies into our control spells (Web, Spike Growth, etc) and be able to follow up with decent melee damage.
Assuming we are going with Ranger though, there's a few questions that need to be answered:

• What weapon do we use?
  • Do we go full Wisdom SAD and try to use Shillelagh + Quarterstaff?
  • Do we go with STR or DEX?
    • A part of me wants to use a reach weapon to help facilitate pushing enemies into our control spells with Gathered Swarm and to reduce the likelihood of being attacked to help preserve our SE temp HP. Maybe a Whip?
• What race do we use?
  • Nothing is really standing out to me, and there aren't really any "must-have" feats I can think of to push us towards vHuman or CL.
  • Goliath for Stone's Endurance to help preserve temp HP?
• What feats stand out?
  • Most interesting one apart from the usual suspects (Warcaster, Resilient: CON, etc) seems to be Slasher.
    • This might synergize with our strategy to push enemies into our control spells with Gathered Swarm (they might not be able to get out on their next turn), and will work with the possible reach weapon options (whip or glaive).
  • I'm thinking that even if we go full Wisdom + Shillelagh, Polearm Master is probably still not the move despite getting us more damage from SE. Seems like it would require multiple rounds of combat to get reasonable value out of, especially if combat looks like... Round 1: SE + Shillelagh, Round 2: Spell, Round 3: melee attacks. I could be wrong though...
• Other Ranger subclass that could work if we use a reach weapon: Hunter
  • Horde Breaker would allow us to make more attacks = more SE damage. This is obviously quite situational though and probably not worth it.

Now for the other question: Does FighteBarb/Monk 5 accomplish this better?

• Fighter gets action surge to allow us to use SE + cast a spell on the first turn of combat - this actually seems really valuable now that I think about it.
  • Battlemaster can get pushing maneuver to use in a similar fashion to gathered swarm.
  • Echo Knight could be interesting to preserve our temp HP. We can use a bonus action to teleport and make our attacks from the echo's position. Also a limited number of additional attacks for more SE damage. Also can work with the spore theme. No forced movement though.
• Barbarian rage could help preserve our temp HP - obviously rage limits spellcasting though.
  • Beast claws gets us additional attacks to get more SE necrotic damage. Works with spore theme.
• Monk makes our Wisdom put in more work for us and bonus action unarmed strikes gives us more SE damage.
  • Astral Self can potentially make us Wisdom SAD. Works with spore theme. We'd just have to save all our Ki to make sure we can activate our arms every combat.
  • Open Hand can push enemies into our spells similar to gathered swarm.
