2023.03.20 16:36 arasharfa About one week in on LDA, second try, no more air hunger! Subtle but profound relief.

I noticed immediate improvement within just an hour that my air hunger and heavy breathing started to fade. Have been having some very light akathisia and insomnia ( as usual) on 1 mg but no severe anxiety and despite a mini crash I’ve been able to stay off zopiclone and diazepam which is a bonus, hopefully that will help my brain fog and memory issues clear up eventually.
Feeling hopeful. Still not very functional but much less desperate in my body. I can cope with this. Looking forward to adding LDN ontop of this to see where it will get me, maybe even trintellix, I’m not very anhedonic anymore after about 8 months of taking NAC and a strict regimen of the usual supplements, but am not able to move much outside the house without crashing, and I can live in my body which is just such a huge relief. I hope I’m not speaking too soon or that it stops working.
Working on weaning of caffeine and nicotine cause it clearly worsens brain fog and POTS, and I’m sure interferes with the effect of abilify.
Yay progress!

2023.03.20 16:27 DescensionSC DIY Upgrade to an ISEL Tech DaVinci - First "DIY" Build

DIY Upgrade to an ISEL Tech DaVinci - First
I picked up an Isel Tech Stepper DaVinci education CNC from Facebook Marketplace last year for $600. My goal was being able to machine Aluminum, and small soft metal parts. I liked how overbuilt and bomb proof the frame was and size wise it was perfect for a project I had coming up. After running it for a few months and getting some good parts out of it I decided to upgrade it to a true 3 axis with upgraded steppers and spindle. Here is my current build and how I got to it.

  1. Bud Box
I knew that I would need to control both my water pump and air pump with the Blackbox. Thats where the DC/AC solid state relays come in. Below is a schematic of the Bud box. Took the Coolant (24v DC) and Tool (3.3v DC) out signals from the X32 and ran them into the DC side of the relays. The AC side is in line with the mains power and the pumps. What this allows me to do is use the Coolant On (M8) command to turn on the chip removal air pump. The water pump is tied to the Tool (M3) control so that it always comes on when the spindle is on. Additionally I took 24v DC from the power supply to the Bud box to power cooling fans for the relays. There is also a mains power ground bus with an external connector so that I am able to ground my enclosure and chassis. This is something that could be accomplished with IOT Relays, but they are hard to come by and I wanted some additional functionality.

  1. VFD Wiring
The VFD wiring to spindle is straight forward. UVW/E to the spindle thru a 4 connector 15a rated cord with aviation style disconnects. RST/E to Mains power. For my configuration I also wired the following terminals:
  • Jump from FOR to DCM (Hardwired for forward spin)
  • Wire NO E-stop Terminal to DCM and SPL (SPL is set to E Stop in settings PD048)
  • Wire 0-10v DC X32 Output to V1 and ACM (VFD Controller Signal from X32)
  • Moved VR jumper to VI (Allows for external VFD Control)

https://preview.redd.it/z9i0b32vvwoa1.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=31e8f9ada94d00f3e449d0a9ea346d718a856968
2a. VFD Settings:
  • PD013 = 8 - This is the factory reset code
  • PD001 = 1 - This sets external terminal control
  • PD002 = 1 - Sets Op freq to simulation (external potentiometer)
  • PD005 = 400 - Max Operating Freq
  • PD004 = 400 - Base Freq
  • PD008 = 110 - This is your Mains Power Voltage
  • PD024 = 1 - Sets your stop bottom to Valid
  • PD048 = 13 - Sets SPL to be used as an E Stop
  • PD070 = 0 - Sets analog input to 0-10v
  • PD072 = 400 - Sets higher analog freq
  • PD144 = 24000 - Rated Motor Revs
  1. E Stop
The Blackbox X32 has a quirk that if it is connected via USB any output that is under 5v will stay active if the 24v DC power is lost. This can cause major issues if you use the 3.3v DC Tool connection. You can cut power to the Controller but if you have USB connected your tool will stay live. I say this is a problem because if you use the controller in Wifi mode or with the interface kit then there is no 5v supplied and cutting power will kill the whole unit. I used this to my advantage. The EStop is set up this way:
22mm Mushroom interlock switch with both a NO and NC contact attached. The NC contact is placed inline with the 24v DC power line between the power supply and the controller. I do this because cutting the power to the Power supply is not instant. The power supply has conditioning capacitors that keep the system live longer than I’d like for an EStop event. Additionally I run the power supply and pumps off of a UPS to mitigate brown outs/power drops. So cutting power “at the wall” is not an option.
The NO contact is wired to VFD terminals DCM and SPL as stated above. This is a built-in safety interlock on the VFD that will cut power to the spindle and let it safely coast down. I mentioned that I used the controller's odd USB power usage to my advantage. Since I use the 0-10v output for Spindle control, and the Tool (3.3v) output for my water pump, when I ESTOP the system my water pump does not turn off. This allows my spindle to coast down but continue to receive cooling.
To sum up: ESTOP switch kills the VFD and kills 24V power to the controller. This stops the spindle and steppers but keeps the cooling water active.

4.Steppers
Luckily for me the ISEL had good mounting and routing options for the Steppers. I used 2.45nm steppers for the X and Y axis and a 3nm stepper for the Z. I went with a higher torque model for the Z axis due to the spindle weight. There is not anything fancy going on here. 4 conductor 22awg shielded cable from the X32 to each stepper. I do however use 4 position weld free connector pairs to allow for easy maintenance. There is a set in each stepper housing and a set inside the cast gantry cavity.

https://preview.redd.it/tameoutxvwoa1.jpg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0598c5d858b4c47bfa51d48e5301da2157823646
  1. Limit Switches
I went back and forth on whether I wanted to use standard micro switches or the Openbuilds Xtension Limit Switch Kits. Ended up going with the Xtensions due to mounting options. Personally I think the Xtension switches are flawed. All 3 mounting holes are plated through holes. Which means that if they are mounted with standard hardware you “ground” the DC circuit thru the chassis.
This is a problem for 2 reasons:
  1. If you use a Openbuilds probe kit, it will always show a closed circuit since your machine is already “grounded”.
  2. If your Spindle is grounded to mains power you are know combining Mains ground and DC (-) “ground”. Meaning if your VFD/Spindle shorts then it has a path directly to your controller.
Getting back to the switches. I ended up mounting them all with nylon spacers and hardware to isolate them. 2 switches in parallel for both X and Y Axis. 1 switch for the Z axis. All 5 are connected back to the controller with 3 conductor 22 awg shielded cable with weld free connectors throughout the build for maintenance.
  1. Z Axis Upgrade
While building up the new Spindle mounts I realized that the Stock axis plate was way too heavy. I wanted to cut as much weight from the Z Axis as possible since I added so much weight with the spindle. I took some 20x80mm V rail and brackets to build up a more efficient mounting plate that would fit the spindle mounts better.

  1. Grounding and DC (-), Isolation
I mentioned it previously but I went to great lengths to make sure that Mains ground is separate from DC (-) and not accidentally combined on the chassis or other places. Limit switches with Plated thru holes were mounted with nylon hardware to isolate them from the chassis. In the BudBox the mains ground bus was used to ground the chassis and enclosure to mains power through the power supply cables of the pumps. Mains power and DC (-) were kept separate in the BudBox. Also, all DC signal wires are run into the enclosure on one side with Spindle and AC power lines run on the other side to reduce crosstalk and interference.

2023.03.20 16:17 BillNyeDeGrasseTyson Adding central air, worth it to jump to a heat pump in the Northeast?

1960s single story ranch in Upstate NY - 1000 sq ft + fully finished basement & attached garage (garage not currently serviced by HVAC).
Relatively new natural gas furnace 80% efficiency. Based on a load calculation from an HVAC technician I'm planning to install a 2-ton outdoor condensing unit and add an evaporator coil to the existing air handler. I'll be doing the install myself as I have everything needed (gauges, vacuum pump, nitrogen/argon backpurge etc)
Most recent fuel price per therm $1.17
Most recent electricity price $0.15/kWh
5kW rooftop solar with 1-1 net metering. I have an electric car and jacuzzi so there is never any excess solar to bank.
Looking at a 14-15 SEER condensing unit and wondering if it's worth the extra to jump to a similar heat pump model for ~$500 more.
Rebates in the area only apply to NEEP listed cold climate air source heat pumps and require contractor sale/install. One rough estimate was $19k.
Looking at a Goodman GSV14 as an example using the COP provided my crossover point for heating being less expensive using the heat pump should be anytime the outdoor ambient temperature is above 32°. Here is the average temperatures in my region.
I'm trying to balance a little bit of future proofing with upfront cost at the moment. The windows in the house are too small for window units in most places so I had to resort to inefficient portable units last year which cost quite a bit to operate. I'm also hoping central air will help with the overall humidity as well to allow the basement dehumidifier to work a little less hard. Last summer it cost me about $60-70/month to operate.
Maybe there's an option I'm not seeing that makes more sense.
Thanks in advance!

2023.03.20 16:04 Mjr798 How accurate is my VXLAN summary?

I'm mainly only talking about EVPN here, I think flood and learn multicast is easier to understand.
As an optimization for pure Data-Plane flood-and-learn process (multicast), BGP was extended so VTEPs could learn MAC addresses from BGP advertisements. This reduces the amount of multicast traffic caused by unknown unicast: once an end-host boots up and sends any packet, like ARP for the default gateway, that host’s MAC is learned and advertised into BGP so every VTEP will learn it and populate their forwarding table.
Once a packet hits the VLAN access interface of a VNI, it'll check what VRF its apart of, if it'll use either the L2 or L3 VNI as the VXLAN ID depending on if the remote device is on the same VNI or another. The VTEP will either know to send the packet across to the other VTEP/leaf if it already has the remotes IP/MAC address that were received from the other leaf via the BGP control plane exchange or it'll have to advertise out the first ARP packet/request it gets for it because it has no record of that MAC entry either via BGP or Multicast if that is the method used for BUM traffic, the remote will get it and either flood the request itself to or send it to the correct VNI > VLAN access interface. Then the remote end device will send the packet back to the source client with the correct L2/L3 addresses of the host itself, it'll go up to its default gateway (which is the VLAN int on the Leaf itself that the device uses), that VLAN will fall under a VNI and will see that the clients L2/L3 is on another VTEP/leaf and will route it to that other VTEP with the outer layer scr dst L2/L3 as the 2 VTEPs and will use either the L2 or L3 VNI as the VXLAN ID for the packet depending on what remote VNI is, so when the other VTEP gets it, it'll know what VRF to associate it to. Then will check its VXLAN mapping table and will send it to the correct host. The L3 VNI is used when sending a packet from one VNI to a different VNI on another leaf, if 2 hosts on different leafs are in the same VNI, then the the L2 VNI is used as the VXLAN ID The VXLAN L3 VNI routing is done by sending the packet with the outer scr and dst ip's as the VTEPS, then the VXLAN header consists of the L3 VNI and the scr and dst ip/macs of the scr host and dst host. The L3 VNI is a way to associate the L3 VNI to a VRF.
Little extras:
L2VPN = MP-BGP to be able to carry MAC addresses
Adding a new VNI to a VRF is just a case of adding in the VNI to the NVE VTEP interface
The associate VRF command on the VTEP tells the VTEP what VRF the L3 VNI is associated with
BUM traffic can be sent/configured either using multicast or ingress replication through BGP which will either be a broadcast, multicast or unknown unicast packet which would be sent over the routed links inside a vxlan header
Route 2 types are MAC/IP advertisements
Route 3 types are routes where BUM traffic can be sent to and on what VNI etc..
Route 5 types are subnet advertisements

2023.03.20 16:02 spotheadcow Anyone else use AirTags for their mobility aid

I use a mobility scooter that doesn’t have a key. Even if it had a key all the mobility scooters use the same key which you can get on Amazon for cheap. I take my scooter places like Disneyland as I travel a lot, and you leave it behind to go on rides. Since I’m somewhat ambulatory I’ve also left it behind on on trails to go to viewing spots in national parks and the like which are not fully accessible. I’m terrified I’ll be stranded somewhere so I’ve added an AirTag. It just makes me feel better. I know it won’t guarantee the scooter will stay put, but it will help me get it back quicker so my vacation isn’t ruined. I also love it for when I’m flying and it’s checked at the gate. $30 for piece of mind is so worth it to me.

2023.03.20 15:32 ghostgabe81 Respect the Godzilla Family (Godzilla Neo)

Godzilla Neo is a series of fanart and fanfiction by artist and writer Matt Frank. The goal of the series is to create a cohesive timeline that includes (almost) every Godzilla movie, as well as comics and games. The series contains several incarnations of Godzilla, as well as many monsters derived from his DNA that could be considered extended family. This thread will cover them.
Kaiju Threat Level Explanation.
This is taken from the Godzilla Fanon Wiki. While it seems to be written by Frank, I cannot confirm this. It's the only explanation of the threat levels that I can find, so take it with a grain of salt.

The Godzillas

Godzillasaurus

A therapod dinosaur that lived in what is now Southeast Asia, several Godzillasaurs survived the extinction brought about by the battle between King Ghidorah and Gigamoth. By the 1950s a pair of brothers were living on Lagos Island where they were mutated by the Castle Bravo nuclear tests, becoming Godzillas I and II.
Statements of Power

Godzilla I, the standard Godzilla

In 1954, the first Godzilla appeared on Odo Island and eventually attacked Tokyo, only to be killed by Dr. Serizawa's Oxygen Destroyer. His awakening started the modern Age of Monsters.
The initial Godzilla Bio covers all 4 "main" Godzillas in the series. Feats from that Bio should apply to Godzillas II-IV as well.

The single most powerful kaiju in existence, created as a superior successor to King Ghidorah by an alien death cult. A chimera of Godzilla, Ghidorah, and the Orochi-spawn Jyarumu and Balkzardan, he was finally defeated by the combined forces of Super Godzilla, Gigamoth and Mecha-King Ghidorah.

NASDAQ: MYNZ Multiple Catalysts Ahead
Hello everyone,
Today I have a diagnostics biotech company with near-term catalysts, small float, potential chart breakout, great news just released and recent analyst coverage indicating over 120% upside (See Analyst Reports Below).
This one has demonstrated the ability to run up fast in recent months!
Note\* Mainz Biomed's ColoAlert test is currently approved and commercially available in Europe and select International markets. Sales, commercial partnerships and marketing activities are starting to ramp up NOW! This leaves an open door for multiple near-term catalysts.
Mainz Biomed B.V. (NASDAQ: MYNZ) a molecular genetics diagnostic company specializing in the early detection of cancer.
The company operates a clinical diagnostic laboratory and generates the majority of its revenue from in-licensed CE-IVD marked stool-based colorectal cancer (CRC) detection test ColoAlert. While working to expand ColoAlert sales in European markets, Mainz is developing potential improvements for a second generation product. While the first generation of ColoAlert combines the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) with multiple DNA mutation markers to detect early stage CRC, the company is investigating the addition of novel mRNA biomarkers that may be able to detect pre-cancerous polyps with best-in-class potential. Clinical data from patients treated at the Hamamatsu University School of Medicine (Japan) and the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke (CHUS; Canada) indicate that the mRNA biomarkers being tested are able to achieve high sensitivity and specificity (published results here) and Mainz is expected to release its own feasibility study results in 1H23.
Following Our Last Report, Mainz Biomed in a Very Smart Move Acquired the Entire Intellectual Property Portfolio for its Colorectal Cancer Diagnostic Test Program
Excerpt from this article:
“This is an important value generation milestone for us as we continue executing our commercial strategy and product development plan to ultimately bring to market the gold-standard CRC self-administered diagnostic test,” commented Guido Baechler, Chief Executive Officer of Mainz Biomed. “Securing complete IP ownership is integral to our growth strategy as it streamlines administration, reduces per-test expenses, and provides us the opportunity to ramp-up corporate development activities,” added Baechler. Mainz Draws Bullish Views at Cantor Fitzgerald on Potential in Colorectal Cancer Screening
October 25th, 2022 - Cancer test maker Mainz Biomed B.V. (NASDAQ: MYNZ) Cantor Fitzgerald initiated its coverage with an Overweight recommendation noting the company’s prospects in colorectal cancer screening.
Mainz (MYNZ) markets ColoAlert non-invasive test for colorectal cancer (CRC) screenings in Europe, and its “European sales provide near-term revenue potential while the company prepares to enter the U.S. market,” the analyst Ross Osborn argues.
The analyst issues positive views on the E.U. and U.S. CRC screening market, estimated at $13B, and notes that the company’s partnership model is likely to improve the adoption of ColoAlert compared to a direct-marketing approach.
Commenting on MYNZ’s valuation disparity with Exact Sciences Corporation (EXAS), its U.S.-based rival in colorectal screening, Osborn argues that the company can close the valuation gap as its sales “volumes accelerate and ColoAlert receives FDA approval.”
The price target at $15 implies over 120% upside to yesterday's closing price but stands lower than the current average price target for MYNZ on Wall Street. Full Cantor Fitzgerald Report

Jones Research Report Highlights
"The future: one sample – multiple screenings. In addition to efforts to improve early detection by incorporating mRNA biomarkers into ColoAlert, Mainz is developing PancAlert. PancAlert is a stool-based early detection screening test for pancreatic cancer. While the company is still evaluating the sensitivity of the product and it remains in the early research stage, we are intrigued by the possibilities of screening for multiple cancers using the same stool-sample (i.e., making use of both ColoAlert and PancAlert). Not only could this offer considerable synergies for Mainz, but it could also improve patient outcomes with no increased inconvenience. Theoretically, the company could expand beyond CRC and pancreatic cancer from there and provide early detection of multiple cancers that are amenable to stool-based screening. While we wait for clinical validation of PancAlert, however, we are not including future revenues in our model and leave the product as a source of potential upside for investors."
"Key Catalyst: mRNA feasibility study readout (1H23); 2) begin enrollment in pivotal ReconAAsense trial (mid-2023)."
"Valuation: Our $11 price target is based on risk-adjusted discounted cash flow (DCF) valuation with cash flows forecasted through 2034, along with a 12.5% discount rate and a 0% terminal growth rate. We assume a probability of success of 90% for ColoAlert in the U.S." Full Jones Research Report

We’ve all been there—chilling at the local café, minding our own business, when some hip remote worker comes in with a MacBook Pro and starts working away. No judgement from me—I use Macs, Windows PCs, and Linux devices on the regular. But since Apple went with its own custom processors, those machines have proven hard for the PC industry to match. Not only are the latest MacBooks attractive, they boast surprising power and incredible efficiency, too.
That’s why HP partnered with AMD to create the new HP Dragonfly Pro. This slim laptop packs the latest Ryzen processor, with 8 high-performance cores and powerful graphics, to take on the Mac. While you’ll need to decide for yourself if you’d rather have this over a MacBook, we found that this is a computer worth considering.
HP Dragonfly Pro: Specs and features
Our review unit came with the following specifications and features:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7736U (8 core, 16 threads)

HP Dragonfly Pro:: Design and build quality
HP Dragonfly Pro design
IDG / Brendan Nystedt
If HP was targeting Apple’s quality, I’ve got to hand it to them—the Dragonfly Pro gets close by most measures. This thin laptop feels high quality from the moment you tear off its recycled paper covering. Although you don’t get a lot in the box, you get a high-powered 96 watt power brick and a braided USB-C charging cable. The power brick and laptop both sport the sleek, angular HP logo, which sets them apart from lower-end laptops offered by the company.
The laptop on its own has a nice shape, with high-quality materials like polycarbonate and aluminum used in its construction, some of which are post-consumer recycled. The black color I sampled has a slight fleck to its color, lending it a spacy sheen in the right light. That said, it’s not glossy and the only portions that picked up any fingerprints were on the keycaps and the glass touchpad surface. Underneath, you’ll find a pair of raised rubber strips that slightly raises the angle of the keyboard while giving the cooling vent ample access to air. And, when under load, it’ll need all the air it can get, as the fans spin up and can be easily heard, albeit with a consistent whoosh and not an annoying whine.

Initiating with Buy Rating and $11 PT
We assume a probability of success of 90% for ColoAlert in the U.S."Full Jones Research Report

2023.03.20 14:51 ArourasAlt After playing with this party for 3-4 years, after numerous campaigns, I am starting to grow tired of their shortcomings. [Long]

Alt account because a couple of my players follow my Reddit, but I don't think any of them frequent this subreddit specifically, at least I hope. If this story turns out to be riveting enough for someone to want to turn it into a YouTube short or something: pleease don't. I do not want my players to see this.
I am a more experienced player who has been playing TTRPGs for a good number of years now, having DMed for groups besides this one multiple times. This is my only in-person group, all others have been online, and have mostly gone much more smoothly, although none have lasted quite as long as my in-person group. I am at college (16-18) with most of the players, so I see them almost every day, and the rest are players I went to school with at one part or another, and speak with frequently. I love this game, and I love DMing for my players when everything works out, and when the game runs cohesively, but sessions like that are few and far between, and I am at my wits end.

Party Members:
Me: The DM
Host: The Host, obviously present for all sessions
Edgelord: Playing since Dragon of Icespire Peak
Bard: Played only Dragon of Icespire Peak
The Dreaded One: Playing since Campaign 1
Powergamer: Joined partway through Curse of Strahd
Friend 1: Joined for Curse of Strahd
Friend 2: Joined for Lost Mine of Phandelver
Currently playing: Me, Host, Edgelord, TDO, Powergamer, Friend 2.

Around three or four years ago, one of my friends (Host) approached me, asking if I would consider helping set up a campaign, that he would host and DM, as, at the time, I did not have a table in my house that could seat five. Host had a desire to keep the party very small, which has been a theme every time that he has DMed (he will not DM for any more than four) which I do not have a problem with, so the players that were invited were Me (High Elf Wizard), Bard (Wood Elf Bard), The Dreaded One (Human Cleric) and Edgelord (Human Rogue). The campaign was Dragon of Icespire Peak, which comes in the starter set, along with Lost Mine of Phandelver. I was the only person with any experience at the time, so I helped out with planning/rules while the party got adjusted, but Bard and Edgelord caught on quickly. I was the only player at the table who really did any sort of RP (which again is fine - new players and all that) and the other players made stock characters with very little in the way of personality, but the campaign was fun enough. I have comparatively few complaints, the normal stuff - murderhobo rogue, horny bard, that sort of thing, as well as the Bard's tendancy to play loud meme music on his phone to "play his lute." There was only one occasion where the party went too far, and the DM and I had to step in and take a time out, when Bard and Edgelord decided that they wanted to break into the Townmaster's bedroom, tie him up, and shove a POLE OF COLLAPSING up his ass. Safe to say, the DM said no. This campaign was the start of The Dreaded One's apparent lack of interest - he didn't learn how his spells worked, and spent most of the campaign on his phone.
There was a lull in DnD part-way through Dragon of Icespire Peak, after we all took a break for the holidays, and for a few months, we didn't play at all. It was increasingly dificult to manage to get all the players togeather for a session, largely due to one player: Bard. Bard had just gotten into a relationship, and was spending every hour with his new girlfriend - whatever, we didn't really mind - but we asked if he could set asside one afternoon a week to play DnD, as he had before. He said that he "couldn't commit that much time," so Host, wanting to finish the campaign, suggested that we do it once every two weeks, which Bard also disagreed with, as he would be too busy. Ultimately, we never finished Dragon of Icespire Peak, as Bard was eventually ousted from our friend-group for unrelated reasons. Host confessed to us that he didn't particularly enjoy DMing for long stretches of time, and would like to try being a player instead, which was completely fine; I volunteered to DM in his stead, as the most senior player, and offered the group a choice between Waterdeep Dragon Heist, and Curse of Stahd, with the notion that they would get to play both, and were just deciding what they wanted to play first. Relpacing Bard, Host invited Friend 1, and Curse of Strahd ultimately won out as the next adventure.
As I share in the Host's proclivity towards smaller parties, we decided that four was enough, and so the party we began Death House with was as follows: Host (Half-Orc Barbarian) Edgelord (Drow Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Halfling Artificer) and Friend 1 (Satyr Druid.) The characters were, again, a little flat, but the players started to RP a lot more than they had during the last campaign, so I was happy enough. I did have a problem with The Dreaded One being on his phone again - as it turns out, he was watching Strippers vs. Werewolves on Netflix while I was DMing, which itched me to no end. I could not (and cannot) for the life of me get TDO to interact with the game in any meaningful way - he would not take actions, he would not roleplay, he would not engage in combat beyond rolling his 1d8 crossbow every turn. As it later turned out, TDO did not know he had ANY spells, so I sat with him before the session and explained what all his spells did, and how he could use them. I can count on one hand the number of times he used a spell in that entire, ten-level campaign. One session, The Dreaded One came up to me and said "I have read the Artificer class info now, I know what I am doing now!"
That was the campaign's final session.
Towards the end of Death House, Powergamer asked if he could sit in on a session and watch, but said that he understood that the table was full and wouldn't be able to play. I left the decision up to Host, who said yes, for one session, which went relatively okay. Later that night, both Host and I recieved a text from Powergamer asking if he could join the campaign. Host and I each said that we were okay with it if the other was - I had DMed for parties of five before - and so he joined as an Aracockra Paladin. PG spent much of the campaign optimising his paladin, which I didn't really have too much of a poblem with, until he began to outshine other players - Friend 1 and Edgelord were getting frustrated that, comparartively, their impact on combat was comparatively minor. This culimated in the player leveraging his Fly ability to cheese encounters (until I began having a lot of them indoors) and ultimately bodying the BBEG in a way that a lot of the other players found quite unsatisfying. Part way through Curse of Strahd, I began to notice that Edgelord was becoming something of a problem player, murderhoboing as she had done in DoIP, attempting to burn down the Wizard of the Wines Vineyard, which made the party unhappy.
I sent Edgelord, The Dreaded One and Friend 1 videos on spell slots and (in Edgelord's case) info on sorcery points and metamagic, which only Friend 1 watched. I had not realised this until Edgelord seemed to cast Fireball a few too many times, and I asked her if she was using a number of sorcery points equal to the spell slot's level when she created them. As it turns out, she had been getting fireballs for one sorcery point the whole time. I told her that was wrong, but not to worry and just keep it in mind going forward, but she jumped to her own defence and insisted "you didn't tell me that was how it worked." Right. Because it's my job to tell you how to play your character. The argument escalated and the session drew to a close two hours early, because nobody could get Edgelord to come back to the table. A similar thing happened when Edgelord wanted a moment to roleplay to explore her backstory, and essentially bolted exposition onto the end of a session which she recieved from a "flash of light," and read the backstory that she had sent me the night prior (five levels into the campaign) to me, only to be dissapointed that it "wasn't how she wanted to do it." Additionally, she took a level in Hexblade Warlock, and I offered her the choice of either getting the level outright, or waiting for an RP moment to make a deal with a demon - she chose the latter. That's fine, I planned something for the next session, but she wanted to do it immediately, and I told her "No, you don't have all the items you'd need to summon a devil or anything - why would you have that with you?" to which she got upset, so I asked her to be patient, but again, the situation escalated and shouting ensued, and the session ended early. (I admittedly didn't help, but EL was constantly undermining me in and out of the game, and I was getting frustrated.) After almost every session, even when something didn't go wrong, she would say "I'm thinking about stopping doing DnD, I'm really not enjoying it." I asked her what she wanted me to do differently, but I never got an answer beyond "I don't know."
When I ran the dinner with Strahd in CoS, I had strahd give each of the players a magic item - I thought it would be a neat little bit of flavour, and a nice gift for getting this far into the campaign. The alcoholic barbarian was given A Decanter of Endless Wine, for example, and the illiterate Druid got a Helm of Comprehend Languages. Edgelord got her gift (I can't even remember what it was) and was dissapointed with it, so asked instead for "a ring that would give me the powers of a vampire but not be under BBEG's control." What. Obviously the answer was no. Thus ensued one of my least favourite sessions, where the party antagonised the (supposedly intimidating) Strahd Von Zarovitch, where Powergamer, The Dreaded One, Edgelord, and even Host called him "a little cum boy" to his face, and continued to insult him. The tonal dissonance really threw me off, and I didn't know what to do - they weren't taking my campaign seriously, and I honestly felt insulted, it was hugely upsetting. I called the session short and eventually got an apology form PG and Host, and ran the event more smoothly the next week, but it still rubs me the wrong way. Towards the end of the campaign, I started to notice my players struggling to pay attention - I distinctly remember reading out the description Kasmimir Velikov's hovel, looking up, and seeing each and every player on their phones. I snapped and shouted at them (which I really ought not to have done, in hindsight) and tried to explain how disheartening it was that it nobody was paying attention, and got a few apologies, though the problem never really fixed itself until the end of the campaign.
The end of the campaign was pretty good IMO, with each of the players choosing ultimately to stay in Barovia with the friends they made. The Barbarian moved into the Blue Water Inn with the Martikovs as a barkeep, the paladin returned to the Old Bonegrinder windmill and made it his home, the Druid married Ireena and adopted Viktor Vallakovich, and the Sorcerer, for siding with Strahd, was imprisoned, but iltimately released, and grew old with her wife and kids in the abbey of Kretzk. Running the adventure had been exhausting, so I requested a break between it and Waterdeep Dragon Heist, so Powergamer offered to run Lost Mines of Phandelver, and Host ran two one shots, so that I could recooperate. PG invited a sixth player, Friend 2, from College, who I helped make a character. The process was stressful, arduous, and full of "I don't knows" and "this is too hards," before, after an entire evening, we had a passable Wood Elf Rogue. LMoP's party was Fiend 1 (Goblin Rogue) Friend 2 (Wood Elf Rogue) Host (Halfling Rogue) Me (Half-Elf Cleric) Edgelord (Half-Orc Bloodhunter) and The Dreaded One (Air Genasi Ranger.) Similar problems ensued, with TDO not interacting with the party and being on his phone, and Edgelord antagonising both me and PG. Host and I fell into a role of the party face, as we were the most confident players, though we did learn to take a back seat once and a while, and Friend 1 and 2 managed to get quite a bit of time in the limelight. PG made the campaign very combat heavy, and the sessions were very long (9+ hours with nothing in the way of breaks) so I struggled to make it through it.
It later came out that PG had promised his partner that, while he wouldn't be able to handle a seventh player, that she could play in the next campaign, as I would be able to handle it. I wasn't told about this, neither was Host, and neither of us were happy with having six players, nevermind seven. I have ran campaings with seven players before, usually oneshots, but this is not the group for it - they have a major issue of talking over both me and eachother, which would be so, so, so exhausting wiht an additional player. When this ultimately came to light, I had to explain that no, I would not take on another player, I didn't even want to DM for six, so PG messaged Friend 2 and asked them if they would be able to sit out of the next campaign so that their girlfriend could play. This upset F2 as they had only just gotten involved and were now asked to step out, and pissed me off as PG had gone behind my back yet again.
Host ran two oneshots, a Western, and a Pirate campaign. The first had the biggest issues - it was Me (Reborn Genie Warlock) Host's GF (Earth Genasi Fiend Warlock) Edgelord (Human Hexblade Warlock) and PG (Variant Human Gunslinger Custom Lineage). Edgelord was livid when she found out that there were three warlocks at the table, because we had all stolen her idea. Host set the expectation that this was going to be an RP-heavy oneshot, but PG brought an optimised character with a 20 in Dex at level one and a ridiculous bonus to hit, and, of course, stomped the two encounters we had before any of the rest of us could make a meaningful addition to it. He then proceeded to use action surge and killed the boss in one hit before BBEG got to monologue or any of us could interact with him. The Pirate Campaign was Me (Tortle Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Human Fighter??) Friend 2 (Triton Bard) and Edgelord (Human Hexblade Warlock). I had a repeat with Friend 2's character sheet, which took hours of discussion, lots of "I don't knows," and a healthy serving of frustration before it was finished. Though the campaign itself went fine, except TDO on his phone.
We have just started Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, with me as the DM, where I decided to ban Tasha's Custom Lineages from my table, as Edgelord and Powergamer had used it to powergame, and I generally like racial bonuses more than custom lineages anyway. As Friend 1 dropped out due to being busy with college, and feeling guilty about party size, she dropped out, so the party is back down to five: Host (Dragonborn Wizard) Powergamer (Variant Human Rogue) Friend 2 (Astral Elf Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Gnome Sorcerer) and Edgelord (Kalashtar Hexblade Warlock). I had a repeat of the Friend 2 situation again as I was helping them make their character. I ended up having to pitch all the ideas and they chose one they liked. Powergamer's concept was a dcotor who was helped by four ghosts which spoke to him (that I have to play, all of which had their own personalities and backstories.) The Dreaded One surprised me when he sent me his character sheet - despite a pretty silly name, the character was well thought out and grounded in the lore of Waterdeep, a sorcerer who worked at the Font of Knowledge, the Temple of Ogmha, in Waterdeep. I liked it, I got really excited, and thought that TDO would finally get involved. He hasn't thus far, and spends most of the game on his phone. Edgelord, Host and Powergamer tend to joke around a lot, which I don't mind as much as I did in CoS, as the setting is more lighthearted, but it is beocming dificult for me to read out descriptions and narrate the story cohesively, as I have to wait 2 or 3 minutes whenever they start talking.
Every session I have to interrupt and say "this took a lot of planning for me, and I need you to listen. Its upsetting when you talk over me the way you do," and they behave for the rest of the session, and then its the same problem next week. Last week, snowing meant that we couldn't run the campaing at Host's house, so we decided to do it on discord, which actually went pretty well - it was actually an improvement on their recent behaviour, though there were a few distractions here and there, those can't really be helped. However, we only got to do half of a session as, when Host, Edgelord and The Dreaded One went to get food, Powergamer went to his girlfriend's house without telling anyone, and so we were waiting for a good half an hour before we ask where he is, and the session comes to a screeching halt.
It sounds like I have a lot of issues with this party - and I do - but I really love DMing for them when they're doing their job. It is so fun when I can watch Host interact with Powergamer and Edgelord in-character, and Friend 2 is really coming into their own as a roleplayer as well, i'm just really struggling to keep going with all the problems they have as a party.
- The Dreaded One: Doesn't pay attention, never roleplays, does bare minimum in combat
- Edgelord: Argumentative, rude, strops and stops sessions halfway before finishing, complains about how they dont like the game.
- Friend 2: Helping them make characters is frustrating and dificult, as they have few ideas and little patience.
- Powergamer: Powergames endlessly, rules lawyers, aranges things behind my back.
- Host: Tends to hog the spotlight, but is improving. Generally the player I have the least issue with.
I love playing DnD, and I lvoe playing it in-person with this party, but they make it so diifcult for me. I am not a perfect DM by any means, and I have let the situation get too out of hand. I plan to finish this campaign and then make some changes to the party, invite some new people, but I know that if I stop some people form coming, there will be drama, and I see these people every day.
With both Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Storm King's Thunder sitting under my desk begging to be played, what do you guys think I should do? How do I get my players to improve?

Glenil’s ears twitched towards his holopad as it pinged. His girlfriend, Amelia, had sent a couple messages in rapid succession.
“Hey, hon. How are you? I’m going to a Krakotl bar tonight.” Glenil’s tail flicked in surprise; he hadn’t realized she’d made a Krakotl friend. Before he could compose a response, she sent another few single-sentence messages.
“Talva invited Mariah and I to go meet a friend of hers at some Krakotl bar. She said the bartender is welcoming, but I’m just nervous about it, you know? Mariah said she might not even go, but I already agreed. I just hate when people act like I’m a monster.”
He waited a moment to see if more was incoming, but it appeared she’d finished. “Do you want me to come? I have work to finish up, but I can meet you afterwards.” He typed back.
“Well, the friend’s going through a breakup, so I think it might be a little thoughtless for me to invite you and shove my own relationship in her face.”
Glenil chuckled. Amelia was too considerate for her own good. He might even know the friend in question, in which case his status as Amelia’s boyfriend would be moot. “You know me just existing in the same room as you doesn’t count as gloating, right? Do you know the friend’s name? Talva and I have some friends in common, I might know her.”
“Jaisa? I don’t know if I’m spelling that right.”
Ah, Jaisa. She’d started seeing some Krakotl guy right after she and Glenil had decided to stop courting. Stars, it had been a long time since they’d hung out.
“I know Jaisa! I haven’t seen her in years, it will be good to tend that friendship back into bloom.”
Across the city in her bedroom, Amelia stared at her holopad. How could he possibly be this dense? Was she really going to have to explain the concept of a girl’s night to this usually-intelligent man? She typed out an explanation she hoped was both firm yet patient around why he couldn’t just invite himself along, but paused before she sent it.
She was an academic, after all, trained to question her own biases. Was it possible that literal space aliens might have different cultural expectations with social gatherings immediately after a big breakup? She rolled her eyes. As certain as she felt that this was a no-boys-allowed outing, she may as well do her due diligence and ask.
To her surprise, Talva thought Jaisa would be glad to see Glenil. “They’ve been friends forever! He’s probably seen her more recently than I had until last night. Her schedule’s been difficult to align with. I bet you’d feel more comfortable with your mate there, too!”
Amelia wrinkled her nose; the Venlil habit of referring to a romantic partner as a ‘mate’ made her skin crawl. “That’s true. I just didn’t want to be selfish bringing my partner when she’s just been through heartbreak.”
“Oh, Amelia, don’t be silly! You wouldn’t expect your friends not to bring their mates to see you if you went through a breakup — that would be cutting your herd in half!”
Amelia opened her mouth and then shut it again. She hadn’t thought of it that way.
“I see what you’re saying. My culture just thinks about it differently, I guess. When we’re heartbroken, I guess it can be hard for us to deal with the jealousy. It can feel even worse to see a lovestruck couple next to you, wishing you had that, and then feeling guilty for not just being happy for them.”
Talva’s tail wagged empathetically. “I can understand that. But the social support of your herd is worth dealing with those negative thoughts.”
Amelia nodded. “I’m glad I talked to you before I told Glenil not to come, then. It would be awful if he thought I was trying to cut him off from his herd.”
Talva’s ears flattened in disapproval. “Yeah, that would have been a bad move, Amelia. Jealousy is never a good look. Just tell him to come by the Roost at third claw, he’ll know where it is. By the way, have you heard from Mariah today? I invited her but I haven’t heard back from her.”
Amelia looked at the floor and cleared her throat. “Uh… Yeah, she… well. You know her family was killed by Krakotl bombs. I’ll be honest, I’m nervous about going, but it’s even more personal for her. Lagos is completely gone because of them. She has one cousin that’s here on Venlil Prime, and a second cousin that was studying in Washington, DC, but she lost every single other member of her family to the bombs that fell on Nigeria. She’s not sure if she can handle it, emotionally.”
Talva’s tail tucked itself between her legs. “I understand. I’m so sorry. Why didn’t she tell me no herself?”
“She might be afraid of disappointing you, Talva.”
Talva’s ears folded down in distress. “I’ll message her an apology right now. I should have realized this would be too much for her, given what the Krakotl did to her people.”
A moment later, her holopad pinged, and Talva’s ears flicked back in shock. “She said, ‘No. I will not allow my heart to be hardened by hate. Your friend was not one of the ones that attacked Earth. I will come.’”
——————————————————
Amelia took several deep breaths into her diaphragm as she, Mariah and Talva approached the famous Krakotl bar. “You’re sure the bartender knows we’re coming?”
“Yes, I’m sure. When he heard me saying I had human friends, he asked me to invite you. He said he wanted a chance for humans to see that not all Krakotl agree with their political leaders on Nishtal.”
Amelia nodded nervously. “Right. He’s right! I agree. And Glenil is coming as soon as he’s finished with his work for the day. Never mind me, I’m just nervous.”
“I feel as though I’m walking into the lion’s den,” Mariah confessed. “But, my people have a saying. He who would hold another down in the mud must stay in the mud to keep him down.”
“It’s not wise to carry a grudge?” Amelia asked.
“Exactly. If anyone has a problem, that problem lies with them, not us. We just have to show them who we are.”
Talva patted both of their shoulders comfortingly. “If anyone does have a problem, Kisoar will deal with it. The bigger thing you should worry about is one of these pushy avians flirting with you,” she joked.
From the outside, the building that housed Venlil Prime’s most well-regarded Krakotl bar was similar to its neighbors in structure. It was several stories tall, with a main storefront at the ground level. Rows of painted azure and turqouise waves, bright, green, swirling geometric designs, and tropical yellow and red wing motifs covered the entire building. Music with a swelling base and chirping harmonies gently filled the building. No one could mistake this for a typical Venlil establishment.
The humans’ heads tilted back uncomfortably to peer upwards at where the ceiling should have been. The proprietor had evidently purchased the entire building and removed the superfluous floors in favor of vertically arranged seating. Light streamed in through windows on every story to illuminate the equally colorful mosaic perches and the spectacularly feathered patrons who perched on them.
Wingbeats drowned out the sound of the music as virtually every group in the bar took to the air to resettle on the highest perches. One lone avian who had been perched near the door swooped down towards them. The humans startled back as Talva called out, “Hi Jaisa, it’s good to see you! These are my friends Amelia and Mariah— oh, stars, are you okay?”
Amelia had managed to halt her flinching after a mere half a skip backwards, but Mariah tripped over her own feet and nearly fell to the ground. Her chocolate brown skin flushed a deep red as she realized the bird was simply coming over to say hello, and not diving in to attack.
Amelia filled the awkward silence with a stuttered greeting as Mariah picked herself up and adjusted her clothing. “Hi, sorry, hi! I, uh, I’m Amelia, this is Mariah. Are you Jaisa?”
Jaisa’s feathers ruffled in amusement that she didn’t bother hiding; she figured the humans wouldn’t know Krakotl body language. “Yes. Greetings Mariah and Amelia, and hello Talva. It’s good to see you.”
The four women crossed to the bar on foot. Despite her narrow field of vision, Mariah could feel eyes staring down at her back. She reminded herself that these Krakotl were probably fine with humans; if they weren’t, they would have left Venlil Prime months ago when the borders reopened. These people had been sharing a city with humans for too long to riot at two females entering a building. Besides, Talva had vouched for them. She was safe with her friends.
The bartender greeted them with a friendly squawk. “Talva, I’m so glad you brought your friends! Humans, I’m Kisoar, Primary Bartender here at The Roost. It’s a pleasure to have you visiting our beautiful bar. I understand your people shake manipulators as a greeting?” He extended his wing across the bar and stretched the fingertips that edged its length towards them. Amelia and Mariah took turns gently grasping his wing and pumping it up and down.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Kisoar, I’m Amelia. Thank you for suggesting Talva invite us. We’re honored to be here.”
“I’m Mariah. Thank you for welcoming us. Your place here is gorgeous.”
Kisoar smoothed his feathers approvingly. “Now, what can I get you ladies? I know you want an algae bloom, Jaisa. Something Venlil for you, Talva?” At Talva’s grateful ear flick, he pulled out a clear jug of something that Amelia would only go near to clean biohazards. “And for you two?”
“I’d love to try an algae bloom,” Amelia said shyly. “That’s a traditional Krakotl drink, right?”
“That’s our heirloom brew!”
“I’ll have that as well, then,” Mariah added, more confidently than she felt.
“Alright, three blooms and a glass of 80% coming right up.” As Talva pulled out her chip to pay, he shook his wings in what looked like a negative. “This one’s on the house, ladies. Want to make our newcomers welcome.”
They thanked him and made their way to a ground-level table. Amelia cautiously sniffed at her drink. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it smelled like salty, boozy pond water. Well. She’d come to this planet in the express hope of experiencing new things. She lifted her drink to eye level.
“To new friends!”
Mariah and Talva repeated back the sentiment and clinked their glasses against Amelia’s. A brief moment later, Jaisa followed suit, and then they all sipped from their drinks.
“That’s the human custom of cheers,” Talva explained to Jaisa, as Amelia desperately tried to control her facial reaction to the green sludge. “It’s like a prayer offered before you drink, where you dedicate it to a specific purpose. I think the default is usually ‘to cheer,’ but sometimes they vary it for the occasion.”
“That is a lovely custom,” Jaisa said. “I’m honored to partake in your customary beverage dedication, humans. What do you think of the algae blooms?”
Mariah smiled back. “It’s a taste profile I’ve never had before. Kind of like if you mixed nori seaweed soup, borscht, and lager together. It’s delicious!”
Jaisa crowed delightedly. “It’s rare to meet a non-Krakotl with good taste!”
Amelia hesitated. She felt certain that half the bar was listening intently to their conversation, but she just wasn’t a good enough liar to pretend she liked the stuff. “I think sweeter drinks may be more my style,” she admitted.
“Perhaps you’ll like it more as the alcohol kicks in!” Mariah quipped.
Jaisa bobbed her head assertively. “It’s true, once you drink the algae bloom, that is when it truly begins to ‘bloom;’ you have to drink it in order to enjoy it!”
Talva lashed her tail in teasing disagreement. “You’ve been telling me algae blooms are an acquired taste ever since we were old enough to drink it at all, and I’m yet to change my mind on them!”
“You just need to keep trying! I know they taste different from what you’re used to, but if you’re open to it, you’ll learn to appreciate it!”
“Personally, sweet’s never been my thing.” Mariah said. “This drink is great. I bet it’s healthy, too.”
“My grandmother always said algae blooms were healing. The Zurulians can try and say alcohol has negative effects, but they’re wrong when it comes to Krakotl liquor!”
Mariah looked around the room appreciatively. “The mosaics are stunning. The colors remind me of the artwork from my own country.”
“I’ve never been in a place like this before,” Amelia agreed. “I guess that’s obvious, since humans can’t fly.”
Jaisa preened. She couldn’t imagine how awful it must be to be confined to the ground, but other species seemed to handle the psychological blow well enough. “Yes, the Venlil prefer more cozy spaces than we Krakotl do. We like light and air.”
“We like light and air, too,” Talva laughed. “We just don’t need eight stories of it above our heads to feel free.”
“So, humans, tell me. Is human architecture as den-like as the Venlil’s?”
“In my home country, we traditionally build round homes with thick, insulating walls and a tall thatched roof to keep the inside shaded and cool. But of course, with modern architecture and building materials, we build all sorts of things across the world.” Mariah said.
“I’m from Virginia, and we like to build airy wooden houses with tall columns around them, painted white. But I moved to New York for university and work, and there, they build squat rowhomes out of brick and stone, and tall skyscrapers hundreds of stories tall of cement and glass,” Amelia told her.
“You changed tribes?” Jaisa asked. “You weren’t scared of retribution for betraying your tribe?”
Mariah and Amelia glanced at each other and burst out laughing. “Of course not! Virginia and New York are both in the United States of America, first of all, so they’re both in the same country. But also, humans leave their hometowns and home countries all the time. We’re proud of our cultural groups, but it’s not really tribalism.”
“We also don’t call our countries tribes,” Mariah clarified. “I know that’s the word that makes the most sense in your language, but to us they’re different. I am part of the Igbo tribe, which is part of the country of Nigeria, so to me it feels strange that non-humans refer to my country as my tribe. But, I know the concept is just a bit foreign to you, so I try to understand what you mean anyway.”
“Fascinating! Do you have pictures of your homes on Earth? Unless that’s a sensitive topic—“ she cut herself off, feathers puffing up, as she realized what she’d asked.
Talva smacked Jaisa with her tail. “Of course, that’s a sensitive topic!” she hissed.
Amelia wrapped her arm around Mariah protectively and tried to decide if she should show her own photos as a distraction, or change the topic entirely.
Mariah gave her a small, tired smile. “I’m prepared for this question, you know. I have a folder of photos I can show you,” she said to the Krakotl. “Ones that won’t make me cry.”
Amelia sighed in relief and pulled out her own holopad. Both humans swiped to their respective “pictures to show aliens” folders and passed their devices back and forth with the avian female.
“You really do have gardens and everything,” she said wonderingly. “It’s beautiful. I’m so sorry for what my people…”
“No, no apologies. It wasn’t your responsibility,” Mariah told her firmly.
“But thank you. I’m glad the planet survived,” Amelia added.
Suddenly, the air compressed above their heads. Trained by years of gym class dodgeball sessions, Amelia and Mariah ducked instinctively. Talons slashed through the air where their heads had been moments before.
“These monsters sold Nishtal to the Greys!” someone cawed furiously from the air. “You want to let them take our bar, too? The pride of the Krakotl community on Venlil Prime, and you want to infest it with this predatory scum?”
Jaisa leaped into the air, screeching indignantly. She was immediately joined by someone else dropping down from an upper perch. The two birds put themselves between the attacker and the humans, cursing colorfully.
Kisoar flapped over to the angry avian. “Jonim! You want to give us Krakotl a bad name, you can go do it somewhere else,” he squawked above the noise. “Get out!”
“You want their ugly skins stinking up the place? Fine! Take the last spot you can go to get away from the predators on the whole infested planet, and just invite them in!”
“You’re making us all look bad!” shouted the bird who had joined Jaisa in jumping to the humans’ defense. “They were minding their own business, unlike you! Just go home, Jonim.”
Kisoar puffed up his tail feathers to emphasize his size. “If you want a chance to be allowed back later, you’ll leave now.”
Jonim sputtered, but folded his wings to dive to the door. “Don’t expect me to feel sorry for you when you realize the mistake you’ve made!” he screeched as he exited, slamming the door behind him.
The bar fell silent, with the exception of the flap of Kisoar’s powerful wings as he situated himself on a central perch. “If anyone else has a problem with welcoming the newest members of our community to this bar, you can leave. Bigotry is not tolerated at The Roost.”
Feathers rustled and talons shifted, but no one moved to leave or swoop down on them. After a moment, the Krakotl that had landed near Jaisa spoke up. “Jonim doesn’t speak for us any more than that pompous waste of flight Jerulim does. We’re Venlil Prime Krakotl, and we don’t hold with the Federation nonsense. Ladies, I’m Krisim. I, for one, would like to welcome you to the flock.”
“Mariah, Amelia, this is Krisim,” Jaisa chirped. “And you already know Talva.”
As Krisim awkwardly attempted a human handshake, the women were surprised to see more of the birds fluttering down from perches.
“Jaisa? Would you mind introducing me to your friends? I’ve been wanting to meet a human, too.”
The quartet of females quickly amassed an impressive audience. A few Krakotl still perched high up, as far away from the predators as possible, but it seemed a significant number of avians had been looking forward to meeting humans that they knew did not blame them for the decisions of politicians like Ambassador Jerulim.
When Glenil arrived, he searched the room for his mate. He saw her seated at a ground-floor table with a massive group of Krakotl. Her full lips were parted in a laugh, her dark brown curls tumbling back over her shoulders. She was the most beautiful creature she’d ever seen.
His tail wagged in relief to see her comfortable and making friends. After he’d noticed her anxiety when they’d initially discussed the outing, he had felt guilty for not being able to meet her earlier. He’d had no doubt in his mind that she’d flourish wherever people gave her a chance, but after his own parents had cruelly rejected her when he’d introduced them, he’d felt more protective of her in social settings. He noted a nearly-empty glass in front of her, and decided to buy her a drink before he went to greet her.
“Kisoar, it’s been a while since I’ve seen you!”
“Glenil, my friend! It has been too long. What can I tempt you with?”
“Just an 80% for me, Kisoar. And do you have tayri juice?”
“Of course.”
“Would you put half a shot of 80 in a large glass of tayri juice for my mate, please?”
“I can do that, yes. I suppose they’re on their way? May I ask what species they are, if that’s their drink of choice?”
“Oh, no, she’s here,” Glenil chuckled. He flicked his ears in Amelia’s direction. “Turns out humans are total lightweights.”
The bartender threw his head back and squawked with raucous laughter. “Thank Inatala she ordered the algae bloom and not anything stronger, then! Courting a human, eh? You always were a brave one. I wish you both the best in your relationship.”
“Thanks Kisoar,” Glenil said, handing him his credit chip for the drinks. “She’s wonderful.”
Wings beat behind him, and he heard a familiar chirp. “Glenil! Thank you for coming, I’m so happy you’re here!”
He turned as Jaisa landed and nuzzled his shoulder with her beak in the standard Krakotl hug. He returned the casual embrace in the usual manner, running his paw down her wing. There really is nothing better than seeing a good friend after a long time apart, he thought. This was a perfect opportunity to catch up with Jaisa on what she’d been doing since they broke up, and give Amelia space to focus on her new avian friends.

2023.03.20 14:27 somaweb [Technique] Growing mushrooms on spent grain

Hi all,
after several failed attempts to grow mushrooms on spent grains, we finally did it. I want to share the result and possibly get tips. We had initially strong problems with the fact that mold has spread. That's why we decided to go with the type below, it seems to be the most sterile method achieved with simple home remedies. I would appreciate any feedback/tips, espacially mixing the substrat with something.
Here's how we do it:
  1. drying the spent grains at 100 °C in an open oven for one hour: Drying spent grains
  2. filling of the spent grains into vacuum bags and vacuuming (content approx. 2 kg), importantly the bag is cooked afterwards and inflates, therefore leave enough space to the top. Packaging grains
  3. put the bags in boiling water for 2 hours. This will cause the bags to inflate greatly, but they should not burst. Cooked bag
  4. disinfect the bag completely from the outside, put silicone drops on the vacuum bag as an inoculation port (prevents foreign fungi from entering the spent grains through the puncture site)
and stick a biofilter (part of a FFP2 mask, for example) over a small hole so that a fresh air supply is possible. (This is where we had most of the problems in other trials, mold always found its way in). Preparation (you can already see the growing mycel in there, I do not have a pic before adding the mycel)
  1. inject mycelium with a syringe through the silicone into the spent grains. (can be procured here e.g. https://ebay.us/hlb267) One syringe was enough for 2 packs.
  2. put the bag for 4-6 weeks in a warm dark place.
  3. when the bag is well grown, disinfect the outside again well and make a 3-5cm cut with a clean knife.
  4. watch mushrooms grow daily and possibly spray with a little water. grown mushroom
Greetings Andi

2023.03.20 14:19 energyIT Switch is misrouting

We just did a network cutover and everything seems to be working but I have two C2960s that are showing a route to the old router and failing to pass traffic because of it. When I "show ip route" I get the actual router as the gateway (correct) then a path back to myself correctly, but then it has a saved route for my PRTG server that is using the old router. This is not a static route that I put in, but it seems to have it anyway. I can't clear it out. I tried clear ip route but it doesn't go away, I tried to go into config and no ip route it but I get back %No matching route to delete. I even tried to put in a route to the new router but it doesn't get added to the list. Any help?
Update:
[SOLVED] How is it I have a route entry on a Layer 2 switch? - Networking (spiceworks.com)
Try entering this on the switches affected and maybe the core:
sh ip redirects
See if those entries show up in the results. If so, use:
clear ip redirects
Then verify with:
sh ip route
and see if they are no longer there.

2023.03.20 14:12 sunshinesontv My brother was somehow able to connect his phone to the Eero network without adding the wi-fi password. Any thoughts how?

I got an eero pro 6 setup yesterday. I gave my brother the password to connect the Samsung Smart TV, Windows 11 laptop and his wife's iPhone and an iPad. However last night he messaged me on WhatsApp to say that his Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro (Android) had "automatically connected to Wi-fi". Just to be clear this was a completely different SSID and password from previous.
He isn't very tech savvy (I have the same phone) and indeed 2 Note 10 Pros were showing in the Eero app. I got his phone and there it was showing connected to the Eero wi-fi and the wan ip on speedtest.net was the home internet ip.
How is this possible? I asked his wife if she somehow added it themselves but they both said they never added the password to the Android phone. After reading up apparently there exists stuff like nearby sharing but I've never used it before and they also said nothing like this happened.
My other idea is the wi-fi passwords are being backed up via Google account and since he signed into Google account on the Windows 11 laptop and the phone via mobile data, google synced the password onto the phone.
I know I'm asking for someone to find a needle in a haystack for the explanation with such limited info but maybe someone has similar experience and knows how to check for sure.
