2023.05.29 02:29 CHAINMAILLEKID A quick Angle Shooter Guide, for all the squids about to pick it up for Sizzle Season.

I’ve been using Angle Shooter w/ my Jet since launch, so I think I’ve gotten a good hang of it, and he’s some of the things I’d like people to know.

1 It’s not as bad as its reputation claims.

It used to be, but Angle Shooter has already gotten two big buffs. (and hopefully a third in a few days). And IMO the perception just hasn’t really caught up yet. Its still not great, but it is quite functional.

2 The most difficult part of learning angle shooter, is just remembering to use it.

It’s a low risk-low reward weapon. Without a good reward to keep you satisfied, its easy to slip into a pattern of not using it enough. You’ll never learn if you never use it, so if you’ve not used it before, er on the side of using it too much.

3 Angle Shooter’s Range

Its range is probably the best thing about angle shooter. Not only does it cross the stage, but it doesn’t require charging up like a sniper. You can react very fast to things very far away from you. Better than anyone else in the game.
You can almost treat Angle Shooter like pinging an enemy for your team like you would in Fortnite or Halo, or any of the other modern shooters.
Things to watch out for are:
Teammates who need help Somebody in a fight and in trouble, but you can’t get to them fast enough? Your angle shooter can. I’m always firing it off at teammates across the stage who are in a fight. If I’m lucky I snag a hit, and grab a kill from it. But really I’m just trying to mark the player they’re fighting so they can more easily hit them and are more likely to win.
Opponents who have broken through defenses You know those players who get past you, and you can’t catch up to them because they’re too fast and your gun can’t reach? Angle Shooter can get them. And once they’re marked an attentive team is now aware and can solve the problem.
Players who love their perches Eliters, splat chargers, hydras, etc. Keep these people marked. Its really easy to take just a second and send a shot their way from a safe distance. You’re not going to get kills doing this, but players really HATE being marked, and being down 35% damage. They feel totally insecure in trying to maintain their position, and they should when most weapons can now two shot them and they can’t hide. It’s a really effective way to hamstring backliners who are not capable enough to be evasive and mobile.
Eliters in general You out range Eliters. You have the best range in the game, and it is your solemn duty to remind Eliters that they cannot rely on outranging everybody else in the game any more, the true king is here. You really are uniquely suited in helping your team dealing with Eliters, and your team is relying on you to do that. Esp. if you’re lucky enough to have an Eliter on your team with you.

4 Finishing off opponents.

This is something very overlooked IMO. You’re in a fight, you get some shots off on somebody, there are about to die and they just BARELY slip away. How often does that happen? A lot, it happens so much. In a lot of situations when that happens you’re just SOL.
But angle shooter is particularly good in those situations, because while they have moved outside of the range of your main, they’re still easily in range of Angle Shooter, and even hiding around a corner may not be of any help. Try and get in the habit of following up with an angle shooter after people who have slipped out of your range. I get splats from angle shooter from this scenario nearly every day, and getting better at it still.

5 Marking opponents for yourself.

I think this is actually pretty tricky to do. If you’re taking advantage of the Angle Shooters range, which should be your primary goal with it, then you’re marking people that you have no chance of hitting with your main weapon, they’re too far away and won’t even be marked anymore by the time you chase them down.
Instead, if you’re marking for yourself you’re relying on its other unique advantage, bouncing off walls.
So if you are marking for yourself, what you’re doing is trying to mark people before an engagement starts. Bouncing around to somewhere they are likely to be, without you having to pop around the corner yourself. And then using your main weapon to take advantage of catching them by surprise.

6 Some limitations and hints.

Because angle shooter bounces, you want to be throwing it slightly downwards. So you would much rather have the high ground when using it. If you shoot up, there’s not a ceiling for it to bounce down from, but if you shoot slightly downward it will hit the floor and come back up.
This I think puts it at odds with Rollers & Blasters in some ways, and so is very important to acknowledge.
If you’re going to put yourself in a position where you’re down behind a drop down or a wall and shooting up at opponents, you’re not in a position to take advantage of Angle Shooter.
But that doesn’t mean you have to stay back and not put yourself down in those positions, but if you can find ways to have used Angle Shooter prior to those situations, then you’ll be able to better take advantage of marking people and using cover.

7 Some places where I like to use angle shooter.

Bouncing off these crates in Scorch Gorge.
Straight across the center in Wahoo World. People just strafe right into it and get marked. And there's often a lot going on and poor visibility in the center.
Off the back wall and around the center pillar in Inkblot Art Academy.
Around this corner and off this block in Eeltail Alley.
And in Museum d'Alfonsino, Probably the best spot to abuse angle shooter in the game, when your team is in advantage and the opponents are struggling to get out of base, you can mark EVERYBODY who leaves base via the main route by standing on the center platform. And its also really good at flushing out players who’re hiding down the wing on their side of the stage.

Aight lets Run it back I got really tired of Streamers streaming this game who have no idea how to play an old school style MMORPG and before you say anything there are currently 3 other School MMORPGS in development in the west and Runescape is currently the WORLDS MOST played game by daily numbers.
Don't ask me what it cost to get into the beta because it cost way to much then i am willing to admit so lets talk about the good the bad and the streamers got it wrong stuff.

The Good:
Optimization OH MY GOD what else is there to say in the clip below you can see my stream highlight. Am standing on a pretty open ledge seeing the world down below playing on MAX OUT graphics 100% Epic not a SINGLE FRAME LOSS not 1 FRAME was lost i had my capped at 144 and NOT A SINGLE frame was ever lost Optimization in this game is beyond insane not 1 other game company has ever come close to game optimization like this. During events with over 100 people nearby my FPS on EPIC MAXED OUT will not drop below 80 and thats over 100 people on screen! and what else is there to say the game looks amazing. For the record i don't have the best PC on the market right now i have a 3090 with a Ryzen 5900X Cpu and 32GB Ram. so if your rocking a 2060+ you should be able to play on at least High/Med with maxed out settings.

Story/Cinematics
The story and cinematics up to first 6 hours of gameplay is extremly fun and engaging am a very avid MMO Lore fan and honestly when certain events happen no spoilers it really did put a tear in my eye even after seeing it 4 times the music just hits PERFECTLY followed by the very detailed animations on the face and body posture. There are story cinematics, Movie Cinematics, and Stop motion animated picture cinematics and ingame engine cinematics there are so many cinematics in this game and i honestly love the lore so far.
World Events
The best MMO with world events for me has been Guild Wars 2 no other MMO has ever given me that itch until today Throne and Liberty has some of the best world events both PVE and PVP (tho mainly i tried the PVP) World Events basically entire Zones once every 2 hours different zones a world event occours for example wolf tails you kill wolfs collect tails and deposit easy reward. People can attack you and steal your tails so be careful. These events are fun but fun really only comes from rewards without rewards its just brainless repetition. The Rewards are by far the most important rewards in the game in the form of Paper you use paper to craft all of your skills No papper No skills. I grouped up with 3-4 people and we were gaming we placed top 5 and all of us got some paper!
Crafting
Similar to Albion & Runescape all items are player crafted. The only exception as far as i can tell is Green/Blue that can drop from monsters everything else especially Purple drops as a craftible materiel you need to spend extra recourses to make. Crafting actually goes very in depth in this game not only items but as mentioned earlier skills are also craftible this game WILL NOT GIVE YOU SKILLS so if your lvl 20 and wondering when your getting your first skill? you Wont you have to go craft it and you can even do that as low as lvl 5 you just need paper.
Bosses
World Bosses aside that turn into loot pineata like every other MMORPG TL goes a step ahead and fixes this problem the same world bosses will appear as solo 1v1 world bosses the player can challange for massive XP and Gold you can rechallenge but the XP/Gold get MUCH lower. if you wanted to have fun with friends you can! THE SAME WORLD bosses will drop BETTER loot if done as a Guild RAID. it sounds exactly as it sounds the same world bossess and much more can be done in a guild group only your guild has to work together to take them down.
Guld System
By far the most advanced Guild system i have ever seen in my life END GAME LOOT is directly obtainable through the guild system from bosses to other aspect of the game. You also have a guild house that can be upgraded to add more layers and layers the guild house can be visted by all guild members there is even a private guild dueling arena inside the house. You can also directly declare war with other guilds this will turn to open world pvp anywhere you are for the avid PVP fans.
Skills
I mentioned you need paper to craft skills but then you can upgrade each skill each skill has 5 upgrades and then a Rare, Epic and LEGENDARY upgrade effect. this is not trivila this is a WHOLE NEW SKILL your entire skill will change in some cases from basic > Legendary for example the legendary skill on 1 of the skills allows you to recast if the skill crits INFININETLY.
Exploration
This game world is like nothing you seen before there are clues hidden everywhere a random shipwreck? oh there a letter hiddin in the cabin? oh it tells you to find the hidden treasure BIG LOOT. i have honestly never played a game that prioritizes exploration to this level TL has surprised me at every step.
Enhancing
This is by far the best enhancement system in any game i have ever seen at least UP TO BLUE and purple but not 100% confirmed THERE IS NO FAILURE you will always 100% Succeed when enhancing BUT you have chances to succeed BETTER and with Higher percentages when upgrading gear. So yes you will not fail but you only got 5% or 1% when you need 100% instead of getting 40% on a 10% chance. this might be the dopamine hitting but NEVER failing ALWAYS succeeding really does feel much better.
The Cons OH BOY.
Combat
This has been mentioned a lot so lets talk the combat will feel like Runescape in unreal engine 5 an updated version of Runescape 3 into a brand new world and a new engine so if your coming from black desert this is not the game for you. However i will admit Melee combat needs to be changed you should be able to move while auto attacking as Melee its far to much of a disadvantage to not be able too. If your Into Lineage & Runescape like me with over 50,000 hours across 17 years on Runescape you will enjoy the combat at least i did. The skills combo into each other really well but yes there is "clunkyness" now this VERY WELL COULD be because of the 300+ ping every streamer is playing on and the beta server is holding over 15,000 players on 1 server but at the end of the day its not game breaking if your use to it. There are YouTubers for example "ForceGaming" Claiming there are not that many movement skills as a Melee this is wrong your first Skill you learn starting the game is a dash with the 2H Sword and your first big skill on daggers is Shadowstep. and they are on a very short cooldown.
Auto Combat (Astral Hunting)
This is an instant turn of for most of you and after watching most the streamers you probably think this game can be played 100% afk and for the most part up to lvl 30 even though max level is 70 but we don't know about later on this game can be played on Astral Hunting now the later you get especially lvl 20+ if you are AFK and not hunting monsters at least 5+ levels below you then you will die. On top of that Astral Hunting will not corectly use your skills for example Fire bolt on Staff can be cast 3 times the 2nd Faster and 3rd Instant but Astral Hunting only casts it 1 time.
No matter what the streamers tell you Astral Hunting is 1000% Slower i Reached lvl 18 in under 5 hours on stream while other streamers playing for 48+ hours were only lvl 20 ish after only using astral hunting. This is a PVP open world Game if you are behind when the game launches and you want to partake into PVP action good luck lmao being lvl 20 while everyone else is lvl 30+

Pay2Win
Its a korean game and honestly am tired of this song and dance what game is not pay2win?? Argubaly WOW is the most pay to win spend $1000 on gold every 6 months BOOM you can get a raid group to BOOST you for The BEST GEAR in the game repeat in 6 months this is genuanly how some people will play world of warcraft. There will be pay2win from what we seen there is Growth pass, Battle Pass then a Battle pass part 2?!?! I would like to say its Korean? But you can Pay2Win in WOW, BDO, Albion, Runescape and there not all korean it just depends on your own standards but so far in the shop other then the battle passes there really is not anything too pay 2 win especially the market place you could argue yes you can buy gear from market place directly but so can a free to play player all they got to do is sell the items on market and they get pay 2 win currency so realisiticly this actually a really fair system.

Honestly there so much i have not even discovered and so much i want to share with you that i have learned across my first 6 hours but lets be real most of you won't read this thread or care about the game outside of bad misinformed YouTubers & Streamers talking about the game and your going to miss out on potentially one of the greatest Oldschool Style MMORPGS ever invented.

TL;DR: My sister asked to talk to me again, and she said that mom and dad told her she's having a gymnastics birthday party in a few months (that she doesn't want) after I (hopefully) will have moved out. They're debating having the party at the gym or renting gym time and having everyone come home for a pool party/food after the gym, and I'm horrified with dad's temptation specifically around gymnastics uniforms and bathing suits that he admitted

I know I previously said that a prior update would be my last, but this will be my last until I hopefully move out, and I think I've gotten more than enough help to be able to. I turn 18 this summer, and a lot of people gave advice on how to get my documents (SSN & birth certificate) from school, and I was able to talk to my teacher about the advice I received. She's agreed to help me with my documents. I want to make this post about something else my sister told me, and last time she said dad was telling her "weird things" in my post, but she didn't tell me what they were. As I said last time, mom and dad don't want us talking to each other, and they'll say something if they see us. Mom also put up cameras that are annoying too, and I talked about it in previous posts. I don't get to talk to her much unless one of them has a church meeting or something else they're doing together. I can't even make phone calls at home because if they hear me talking, they'll come to my room and ask who it is and want to see my phone and threaten to turn it off if I don't tell them. However, I was able to talk to her again, and she told me something else that really bothered me. However, she said it wasn't the weird thing about dad from last time, but it was still enough for me to make a post
I got to talk to her because mom and dad went out for a bit. And for context, mom has cameras in the living room, family room, upstairs, and kitchen. The upstairs one points to our bedroom doors, but not inside, and the cameras are connected to an app on mom and dad's phones. She asked if we could talk, and I went to her room after they left. They talked to me about it the next day because they saw that I went into her room on the camera, but I didn't care because she wanted to talk to me. I'll get to that talk with my parents later
Getting back to my sister, she told me that mom and dad talked to her about having a gymnastics birthday party in a few months, and her birthday is after I turn 18 and would hopefully be out of the home. They said they're debating having a party at the gym, but they also might have it at our home because we have a pool and it'd be in the backyard. They also said they might have the party at the gym where they'd have fun for a few hours before coming back to the home for the pool/food, but they were throwing ideas around. However, my sister doesn't want a gymnastics party. But when she said that, they told her that they were paying for it and that she should be thankful she was getting anything. As a reminder, mom and dad said I'm not getting a party when I turn 18, and they also didn't give me a 16th birthday party because I wanted to get vaccinated in my first post over two years ago because getting vaccinated "wasn't trusting God"
Going back to my sister, I'm very disturbed for obvious reasons. In my last post when I asked why dad had to go to the gym instead of letting me/my sister carpool with friends if he had "temptation in the gym environment", he said it was because Jesus "went into the desert to overcome temptation, so he had to go to the gym to overcome his". Now he wants to have a gymnastics party for my sister that she doesn't want herself. She said she didn't want to do anything for her birthday besides have cake at home, but they're forcing her to have a gymnastics party when dad admits he struggles in the gym environment. My gymnastics coach and I were training for a gymnastics scholarship/college team with private/group lessons before I was taken out of gymnastics for his nonsense, and I'm horrified that he's pushing for a gymnastics party after everything's he done. There will be other kids at this party who are forced to be around him who have no idea about his "temptation", and their parents have no clue either. It's worse that he's hosting the party with mom supporting it, and I won't be here when it happens because I'll already be moved out hopefully
I cannot tell you how much I hate dad. College gymnastics is out of the picture for me because I told grandma about his temptation (before he told me to not tell anyone), and he basically ruined that dream. Then he fasts for two weeks from watching my younger sister's class at the gym before saying he "learned new strategies" to make him stronger before returning to the gym for her classes. Then he said she wouldn't be taken out of gymnastics unlike me because of it (I'm glad she's not being forced to quit, but disgusted that he's using her class as an overcoming temptation test). I feel like his whole fasting nonsense was to make an excuse to go to the gym "changed" after showing no effort to improve himself. He didn't want anyone to know as he punished me for telling grandma, and he said that therapy wasn't necessary for his struggle. I even talked to mom since my last post about why she doesn't see what's wrong with dad, and she said that "many father's probably deal with the same feelings at the gym but don't admit it like dad" to improve. She also said that gymnastics is "easy for people to lust at because it's a sport", but that dad did a "big thing instead of hiding his sin like other people"
I've been told to grey rock, and I completely agree. The only reason I talked to mom after she confronted me about going into my sister's room when they were gone was to ask for her help. I know she's like talking to a wall, and I grey rock my dad. I just want her help so bad, but I'm convinced after our last talk that she never will (although I knew that long before but wanted to try). My sister also said she's not allowed to wear her uniform at home because mom made the rule, and that means she has to wear pants and a jacket over her leotard. I tried to tell mom just how wrong that was when we talked, but she gave me the shit about how we're supposed to "be in the world, not of the world" and "make adjustments to help everyone". Dad also drives her to gymnastics by himself sometimes, and that really makes me disgusted. I asked my sister if it was okay to ask mom about the gymnastics party, but she said no because she didn't want to get in trouble for telling me, so I didn't bring it up and told her that we spoke about the jacket rule instead
I promise this is my last post before I move out, but I really need help with this. I think it's dangerous for everyone invited to the party to be around dad at the gym and at home. Dad literally said he struggles with gymnastics uniforms/leotards, and mom always made us wear a skirt and t-shirt over our bathing suit years before dad took me out of gymnastics. The kids at the party would probably be wearing some sort of uniform at the gym and bathing suit at our home for the pool, and that has me horrified with dad. I want to do something because I won't be able to do anything once I leave, and I'm worried that something could happen to someone there who suspects nothing
I have a few ideas, but I'm hoping to get more. Some have suggested to call the FBI. Would I have enough to get their help based on the information my sister told me about the party along with dad's openness about his temptation. Others also suggested telling the parents of her class about his temptation, but my parents would be at her class which would make it really hard. I could try to go to the gym and do it anyway if it'll protect them, but I want to ask for other suggestions first because that could maybe hurt my chances of leaving if they get upset. I'm willing to do it to prevent something from happening, but I want to explore all options before that. I've called CPS over 6 times for myself over the years, and that's not including my teacher calling and my aunt numerous times too for nothing to happen. Would the police be able to help with this? I just want to prevent anything bad from happening there, and I'm sorry for this post being so long. I really appreciate everyone who has helped me so far, and I promise that this is the last one until I move out

I know I previously said that a prior update would be my last, but this will be my last until I hopefully move out, and I think I've gotten more than enough help to be able to. I turn 18 this summer, and a lot of people gave advice on how to get my documents (SSN & birth certificate) from school, and I was able to talk to my teacher about the advice I received. She's agreed to help me with my documents. Been out of the hobby for a while, but I found some old cards from the 80’s & 90’s when my Dad bought the farm. He’s still alive, it was a literal farm and these boxes were in the attic of the house. My Dad’s a great man by the way. Collecting was really special to him and his dad. Anyway, I decided to get back in to the hobby and stumbled my way into here. I know those cards are worth tons but I’ll ask how much you think I could get for them anyway.
I’ll post a pic of them later. It’ll be a blurry shot of an off-centered 1992 Topps Griffey. I’ll hold it in my hand with nasty dirty fingernails, and there will be all these loose cards in the background strewn out across a bed just waiting to snag the corners on a loose thread. I’ll know the card is GEM, because I know more than you, obviously, but I’ll ask if you think all the worthless cards in the photo that you can’t see will grade well.
Also, because I’m going to be a millionaire from those 80’s/90’s cards, I bought these new prospect cards featuring players that I know nothing about. Hey all, I’m a long time follower of this community and wanted to share something I learned over many years of personal experimentation.
I’ve had times in my life where microdosing was the biggest deal ever - you could not convince me to not microdose, because it was saving my life after all! All I was doing was thinking about microdosing, sharing it with people, and really diving into the whole culture and science.
I’ve had other times where I took it regularly, but it wasn’t nearly as important, and I took it in the background as if it was a vitamin. I would sometimes forget to take it and not think much of it.
And now I’m living in a time where I just take it as needed, usually 2-4 times a month recently. And that’s just perfect for me. After all, i have to honor all the personal growth & healing psychedelics have given me by not needing to use them as much!
Who knows about next year? Maybe it’ll be the perfect time to take it very regularly, following one of the popular protocols in this community. Or maybe I’ll throw my whole stash away and use a different method of healing.

My point is that microdosing is highly individualized, and highly seasonal. Especially if you combine it with other methods of healing/awakening like meditation, yoga, therapy, or journaling - you shouldn’t be surprised if you don’t need microdosing in the same way anymore.
I am personally skeptical of cases where someone takes them most days for many months or years. However I want to keep an open mind about it all. I had seasons of my life where I took large doses monthly, or other seasons where I use high amounts of THC or CBD to guide my journey, and others where I’m sober. We all just have to listen to our own body and inner voice. Don’t get stuck in a new rut! Don’t get trapped in “oh god I won’t be okay if I can’t microdose like this forever”. Spread your healing across many methods.

(Current PC specs below)
I am trying to learn various software like Davinci Resolve, Blender & iClone
However, my current system which is around 6 years old is simply struggling with this software, I have upgraded the RAM to 64GB, and that has improved things a little bit but it is still pretty much unusable.
This is the usual story where money is tight, so I would like your advice on what would be the most cost-effective way to upgrade my PC to work with these programs, what parts you would recommend, I'm open to all and any advice you can offer

2023.05.28 22:13 pinkmatterrrrr my fiancé blocked me on everything after a really nasty argument

Hi all.
My partner and I have been together for two years now, but we’ve known each other since we were 12. This past year has been a lot of major transitions for the both of us, and we haven’t adjusted well to those changes, and as a result, we’ve been mutually toxic to each other in a variety of ways, but we’ve ultimately addressed each concern and moved forward as a couple committed to improving ourselves. Much of the stress and arguments was centered around finances, bills, stability, and responsibility, but we both have jobs now and readily available income. However, arguments revolve around him being financially impulsive (quitting jobs), not being grounded, his insecurities, and him by showing up for me (rarely planing dates, not getting gifts for birthday/Christmas/Valentines Day).
However, one major point of contention that constantly reoccurs is the way we individually handle conflict, which can cause a minor argument to turn into a major fallout. I can sometimes be ranty, rude, mean, and argumentative (as of late I’ve been improving a lot and learning new ways to communicate in therapy) and my partner stonewalling me if I even slightly raise my voice and/or sound angry towards him and when I monitor what I say and I speak calmly he still shuts me out. I also have BPD, so the arguments in my life can particularly be very aggressive and sometimes brutal. I’ve said some really harsh things and it hurts because it feels like it just spills out. I’ve been becoming triggered and splitting a lot more than I ever have lately, especially when my partner was physically abusive towards me during an argument two months ago (he shoved me, pinned me down, and hit me in my face). After that incident, I’ve been slowly getting back into care with therapy and I requested my medication to be refilled as of three days ago.
This week, it’s been small arguments leading to much bigger ones. We’ve been moving all week, and he’s been frustrated about the lack of sleep and downtime. I tried to distract him from that by planning a movie date, but he’s been hyper fixated on the negative. I also had a pretty important event that I missed for my first big girl job (I just graduated college) because he came thirty minutes late. He was sulking because he didn’t play games all week and just wanted downtime/stress relief, so he came when he felt like it.
Yesterday, I asked him could he plan a date before he had work, since I’ve been planning almost every date since we’ve been together. He agreed but ultimately didn’t do it and instead suggested we run some errands, eat, and watch a couple of videos together. I asked if he could go home and we just run the errands another time since that’s not what I desired to do for the day. He remarked that I was being mean to him when I jokingly asked if he could use his noggin to brainstorm and I was confused since we joke like that often, so I told him his attitude was unusually sensitive. I began to clean out my car (we just moved) and I asked him to help, he refused and told me he didn’t want to “argue” today. His mother called and requested to use my car, and he immediately started cleaning out our shared car to help her with whatever she asked. I told him was people pleasing, which triggered him.
he started to insult me in a non-joking, immature, and spiteful way. He started calling me annoying, stupid, lying, disgusting, manipulative, lazy, and commented on my struggles with BPD as a means to hurt me. It triggered me and I said that I hope he dies, and my heart dropped into my ass. He told me that “I can figure things out” left, and then started walking out the complex. I tried to call him almost immediately but I was blocked on every platform and my phone number was blocked. I requested to have my things back and also give him his things if he’s done (my ID, credit card, work laptop, clothes, cat’s medicine) through my sister and he blocked her too. I feel terrible and I know what I said was even worse and 100% not ok. I feel even worse because I feel like I’m being abandoned and shut out.
He’s a massive part of my life and he’s never done this to me, but there was a time he blocked one of his exes (not sure for how long since that was years ago when we were in high school). Are things over? Should I give up or should I try to work things out? What should I do now?

This board gets a lot of questions from new/prospective students, and one of the most common is regarding the level of programming that occurs in the MSDA program, what languages are used, what skills or functionality within a language is needed, etc. Many of us graduates enjoy helping new students and answering questions, but re-posting the same information can be tedious and lead to different newbies getting different responses to the same question. To address this issue, we've decided to start this Python/SQL Resource Megathread as a living document that anyone can (and should!) contribute any helpful learning resources to, and it also makes for an evolving resource for any new or prospective students regarding our personally preferred resources for learning these languages in preparation for the MSDA program.
For contributors to the thread, a couple quick points to keep in mind:
(A resource about how to build a NLP model that you used in D213 belongs in a thread about D213 or NLP models)
("Just search google for Python tutorials" isn't an effective resource, be more specific or provide some links)
For new or prospective students using the thread, let's cover some basic information:
The WGU MS Data Analytics program is centered mostly around programming for data science and data analysis. There are no official prerequisite skills for the program, and some students do start the program and finish it without any familiarity with coding or programming. However, your journey will be made significantly easier by learning some of these skills prior to entering the program. Specifically, the program requires students to use Structured Query Language (SQL) for two classes (D205 & D211), and it also requires students to use Python or R for each of the remaining classes. Most students choose one of Python or R and stick with it for the entirety of the program, though you could choose to switch back and forth, if you like. Some familiarity or understanding of statistics is also useful, though the program is light on math.
The SQL portion of the program utilizes virtual machines (which we won't complain about here) to perform operations in pgAdmin, a graphic user interface for a PostgreSQL environment. The provision of a GUI allows students to be less reliant on using "hard" SQL (you can generate queries from the GUI). Data cleaning operations often require recasting data types, replacing data values in various ways, performing calculations to generate new data, appending columns/rows/tables, and finally exporting the cleaned data back into a .csv file. Students also will need to generate a number of visualizations of their final dataset, often handling both qualitative and quantitative data. These graphs will need to be "polished", including providing axis titles, manipulating axis units or views, and producing legends.
Finally, it isa completely optional but highly recommended to set up and learn to use a Notebook environment, such as Jupyter Notebook. A Notebook environment consists of a series of cells which can be used for either programming operations or writing narratives in Markdown language (like a Reddit post), as seen here. Many students find this useful because it provides an environment to easily iterate on your code as you produce it, while also reducing redundant steps by combining your code and your reporting into a single file to be turned in, rather than having to maintain two different files and take screenshots of code to include in a dedicated reporting document, such as Word .doc file.

So I’ve been down the rabbit hole, trying to chase every off-the-cuff reference, stray allegory, allusion, comparison, and tangent. I’m going to need you to bear (hug) with me for a bit because I think I’ve stumbled on some truly insane parallels between this show and the myriad of references it makes and it will take a lot of text to justify to you that I'm not crazy (or that I am, but at least I do my research).
This is a show that employs a ton of intertextuality and what the poet T.S. Eliot (someone quoted frequently throughout the series) calls “the mythic method”: essentially using historical, literary, and mythological allusions to draw parallels between characters on the show and characters throughout history (real and imagined).
This method helps the audience to build both conscious and unconscious associations with each of the characters and, ultimately, underscores the Roys’ (and humanity’s) damning commitment to making the same mistakes over and over again. The show seems to draw a lot from Greek mythology, Arthurian legend, biblical parables, Shakespearean tragedy, and modernist poetry (among many other things).
These networks of symbolism span from the earliest recorded history to modern celebrity culture and yet they reveal frighteningly unchanged elements in the stories they tell. The parallels of these references throughout the show serve to highlight the cyclical (the illusion of progress) and deterministic (the illusion of free will) nature of existence.
While I will be dipping in and out of the existing references, I want to call particular attention to the poetry of the aforementioned T.S. Eliot (who champions the mythic method) and John Berryman’s poem Dream Song 29 because I believe much of their work has served as a foundation for characters.
In the show, Frank makes mention of his poem “The Long Song Of J Alfred Prufrock” more than once. Outside of the show, Matthew McFayden (the actor who plays Tom) references the same poem to describe his character. Jeremy Strong (the actor who plays Kendall) says Eliot’s work The Four Quartets is a huge inspiration to his acting and character. A line from this particular work did strike me as being quite on the nose, which is why I continued to comb the poem for more (which it does deliver on):
"In my beginning is my end. In succession Houses rise and fall, crumble, are extended, Are removed, destroyed, restored, or in their place Is an open field, or a factory, or a by-pass. Old stone to new building, old timber to new fires, Old fires to ashes, and ashes to the earth Which is already flesh, fur and faeces, Bone of man and beast, cornstalk and leaf."
This will probably be a monster of a post, so I will attempt to break down the following sections between poetic parallels, visual and dialogic symbolism of eternal recurrence, and an exploration of the historical and mythological allusions. Ultimately, I believe all of these clues point to the overwhelming conclusion that we will end where we began, in some way or another.
Circles & Cycles: Endless Recurrence & The Futility Of Progress
The show toys a lot with the philosophical concept of eternal recurrence, which postulates that “time repeats itself in an infinite loop, and that exactly the same events will continue to occur in exactly the same way, over and over again, for eternity.”
These eternal loops are symbolized visually with mirrors, water, fractal reflections; in the “uh-huh” and “mhmms” of repeated, near-palindromic dialogue; and in the show events that echo and repeat: in-air death scares, asynchronous business deals, family betrayal, weddings, retreats, implosions, family reunions, trauma bonding, baptism, funerals, etc.
In this understanding of time, there is no linear progress — or even progress at all. Time is cyclical. People are cyclical. As are the events that transpire. This is particularly interesting in a show like Succession whose title alone implies the phrase “line of succession.” Viewers would expect to see what comes next — who comes next — but as Logan himself yells, “Nothing is a line. Everything is moving all the time.”
Logan consistently evokes the circle shape in his speech, “Put a circle around him” he tells Shiv. “We’ve been circling for an hour, tell them we’re out of gas,” he complains in a moment of grim foreshadowing on his plane. “Crawl in a circle and close your eyes,” he shouts during the game of Boar on the Floor.
And he is the bright, burning nebulous center of this circle. He’s described as “carr[ying] his gravity. He's not a man, he's a f*cking planet.” And the people around him are described like satellites and moons. Characters exist in his orbit. And every complete orbit (or “revolution”) leaves characters in exactly the same place. There are motions, there is the illusion of progress, but the result is the same. Eliot again:
“every attempt Is a wholly new start, and a different kind of failure”
With this understanding, the show may just end where it begins. Not only in “nothing” happening, but in repeating the same events ad infinitum: A kid tries to take over the family business, they try to align with their siblings, they eventually backstab their siblings, they end out in the cold, and then they reunite, swear not to do it again, until it all repeats.
As most of us are aware, the show has made very direct mention of the John Berryman poem Dream Song 29. The names of the past three season finales (as well as the name of the upcoming fourth) are all direct excerpts from the poem, which deals with grief and sadness and the guilt of killing someone when you can’t even confirm there’s been someone killed at all.
Berryman consistently wrote about the guilt and grief he experienced from his father’s suicide. Berryman himself would eventually end up taking his own life, which on its own is a brutal reminder of the cycles of trauma. It also doesn’t feel insignificant that Berryman jumped off a bridge.
What’s really interesting is how each subsequent finale is named for a line that comes earlier and earlier in the poem. It also toys with this concept that things come full circle and end where they begin. This echoes Eliot’s essential thesis of the poem:
“What we call the beginning is often the end And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.”
But while the speaker of the poem comes to realize he has not murdered “nobody” by the poem’s last line; Kendall, moving through the poem backward, must reckon with the idea that he may have killed somebody even if they were a “nobody.” And while we may encounter this as a moment in which Kendall is genuinely despairing over his season 1 inadvertent murder, I believe we are far more likely to see Kendall embrace this moment.
We see "nobody" and "no one mentioned" a lot when it comes to Logan, who believes most people are "fungible as f*ck," and "pygmies" while he's "1,000 feet tall." When Kendall is involved in the accident, we see him echo "NRPI" or no real person involved.
The reason Kendall couldn’t live up to his father’s expectations is that he couldn’t be the killer his father needed him to be (even if his morality or basis of being a good person is off). This retroactive movement through the poem could be Kendall realizing he is, in fact, the killer his father always needed him to be, enabling him to take the necessary steps of seizing the crown on his own.
Allegories & Allusions: Mythic Comparisons & Determinism
It’s Shakespearean, like Roman says, “I kill Kendall, get crowned king, like we’re in f*cking Hamlet or something.” But it’s not just Hamlet, it’s King Lear, King Richard III, Coriolanus, Macbeth. And it’s not just Shakespeare, it’s Oedipus Rex, The Odyssey, The Waste Land, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Cronus devouring his children, Romulus killing Remus, Noah cursing his child for looking upon him naked.
The concept of the monomyth was popularized in "The Hero With 1000 Faces" and discusses throughout history, throughout different times and places, different cultures, different religions, different people have developed stories with relatively similar fundamental elements. The show is rife with allusions of stories that follow that same thread. Logan is Cronus who is King Lear who is Romulus who is who is. This is another form of endless recurrence: the inability to break the cycle. Or, in a very Hamlet reference, "maybe the poison drips through."
The themes of patricide, fratricide, and incest in particular are rampant. Rhea (like Rhea Jarell) in Greek mythology is both sister and consort to Cronus. Both are part of the first generation of aptly named Titan gods. Cronus overthrew his father Uranus and learns his children are fated to overthrow him. So he eats them as soon as they are born. Logan does refer to people as food a surprising amount throughout the show, varying from red meat to vegetables. He outright calls for blood sacrifice, which evokes the language of the gods.
Logan is referenced specifically as one of the last real American titans in his obituaries and eulogies. The language around him is frequently god-like. He's known as "the big man" or even "the big man upstairs." Tom tells Greg to "be his representative here on earth"; Roman asks the audience, "who is going to climb Mt. Olympus and be the next Dr. Zeus?" And that's where the myth gets interesting.
The only child not to be eaten is Zeus, who does end up killing his father and was surprisingly interested in marrying his mother. We're familiar with this plot formula through a different archetype: the Oedipus Complex, which we see referenced in the show with “Oedipus Roy,” “Oedipussy,” and “stabbing my eyes out.” The same story is repeated again in Hamlet with brother killing and brother and son yelling at his mother about her milky breasts (something Roman does to Shiv more than once). In the show when Logan says to Roman, “You may want to f*ck your mother but I don’t.” We know none of these stories end well. As Connor muses, “It’s not right to kill one’s father; history teaches us that.”
In the story of Romulus and Remus (whose mother’s name is also Rhea), the two brothers were initially chased out of their city as potential threats to the King (yet again). They were left by the river to die and were saved by the river god (important). After successfully overthrowing the kingdom that left them for dead, they agree to found a new city. They ultimately disagreed on which hill to found it and decided to have a bird-watching competition to see who could see the most omens indicating they had divine approval for the hill. Remus says he saw 6 auspicious birds but Romulus claims to see 12. Romulus kills Remus over this.
It should remind you of Logan visiting his childhood home with Ewan: “I saw a mistle thrush at the bandstand,” and the log book he kept as a child of birds he “saw” that Ewan would cross out if he didn’t believe him. It may also echo a part of The Four Quartets, “Other echoes/ Inhabit the garden. Shall we follow?/ Quick, said the bird, find them, find them,/ Round the corner. Through the first gate,/ Into our first world, shall we follow/ The deception of the thrush?"
There is much to be said about the themes of warring brothers. Also the themes of fathers worried their children would one day overthrow them who take action to thwart or murder their children, which inadvertently sets into motion the very outcome they fear. It happens over and over again in stories old and new. As Panhandle Pete says, “I push him, he pushes me, and around and around we go.” Or as Eliot puts it, “that the wheel may turn and still / Be forever still.”
Much of these works touch on a sort of determinism, or the slow crushing reality that every action you take — even if that action is an attempt to thwart your fate — will ultimately lead to the same inevitable ending. This is the illusion of free will on top of the illusion of progress. And Logan, in fearing his children would usurp him (and also disparaging his children for not being able to), set into motion his own death and his own messy succession.
It’s also a reminder that the greatest men in life are all the same when laid to rest:
"O dark dark dark. They all go into the dark, The vacant interstellar spaces, the vacant into the vacant, The captains, merchant bankers, eminent men of letters, The generous patrons of art, the statesmen and the rulers, Distinguished civil servants, chairmen of many committees, Industrial lords and petty contractors, all go into the dark…"
Structure & Symbolism: Water As Rebirth & Destruction
The show has very much been structured around Kendall, and we watch him move through bodies of water with what feels like different symbolism each time. Is he drowning, is he reborn? We witness Kendall at his lowest point face down in a pool and at one of his highest, splashing into the Pacific ocean. We watch a man drown. We watch Logan beg Kendall for water as they walk through Adrien Brody’s maze. We watch Roman clamor for water at the funeral when he needs to calm down. Poetry has long played with this life and death dynamic in water, like the sailors dying of thirst in Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s The Rime of the Ancient Mariner who cry:
“Water, water, every where,. And all the boards did shrink;. Water, water, every where,. Nor any drop to drink. The very deep did rot: O Christ!”
This sub has noted Kendall’s connection to water, which has been represented over and over visually. But once you realize every metaphor, analogy, and simile he uses is water-based, you can’t unhear it. He calls his father “a tsunami of corruption” and describes things “as more precious than water”; he calls deals “choppy” and “dead in the water,” and asks to “help steady the ship”; he offers to “row back” on business deals, says timing is “high tide,” and that he has “bigger fish to fry.”
Logan is apt to use similar water symbolism, even telling Shiv that she’s marrying a man “fathoms” beneath her. As Rhea tells him, fearful of his own monstrosity, “I can’t see the bottom of the pool. I don’t know if you care about anything. It scares me.” ATN’s major scandal was “death cruises.” Even his operating nemesis is called “Sandy.”
In fact, there is mention of all elements and seasons — in particular, fire from Shiv, air from Roman, and earth from Connor. T.S. Eliot’s The Four Quartets confront these same themes and share some surprising similarities with show scene locations, dialogue, and plot points.
That’s because Succession is an allegory for the micro and the macro: the rise and fall of families, civilizations, monarchies, dynasties, and empires. Ashes to ashes and dust to dust, the cycles rinse and repeat. Eliot modeled the four quartets on the 4 elements and the 4 seasons. And you can see even in Succession a similar manifestation of 4 elements. And, well, 4 seasons of the show. (And what occurs after 4 seasons? A full revolution around the sun, bringing you to where you began.)
Water seems to be at the root of it all. Even Ewan’s eulogy meditates on his and Logan’s journey on a boat. Even their abusive uncle is named Noah. In the show, we watch our nobody die by water, we watch our main character nearly die by water, and then we watch him revive in the ocean. As Kendall and his father wind their way through Adrien Brody’s circuitous Long Island home, Kendall remarks, “I think this leads to the ocean.” Because every path leads to the sea in some way or another.
The overarching narration from T.S. Eliot’s The Waste Land is the Arthurian Legend of The Fisher King. This story is told a million different ways with a million different outcomes, but always boils down to an injured or maimed monarch ruling over a dying land. Or as Ewan refers to his "empire of shit": “He’s built a wasteland and called it an empire.”
He’s looking for someone, anyone, to heal him, rescue the kingdom, and ensure the dynasty survives. This is the myth of the holy grail, which, in this show, can be seen as the throne: The original stories of the holy grail were not Christian/religious but they do employ a lot of the same mythmaking from earlier religions and mythologies to tell their stories and thus construct their new realties. As Eliot says in The Four Quartets:
"The whole earth is our hospital Endowed by the ruined millionaire, Wherein, if we do well, we shall Die of the absolute paternal care That will not leave us, but prevents us everywhere."
I believe Kendall (and the other children) represent the grail knights who try to save the king. (On the same level they stand in for the gods, the elements, or anything at all). When Christianity became more popular, these myths adapted to Christian overtones, but they still had the Celtic and pagan myths at their core: the grail becomes the chalice from the last supper.
That’s why Kendall’s easy comparisons of himself to Jesus feel less blasphemous than revelatory. Jesus is another hero archetype in the show’s mythology. He is willing to sacrifice himself, which Kendall must do in order to become the successor his father wanted. As he says, "this is a culmination of my life's journey to be crucified for you morons."
(It’s worth noting: In some legends, the knight saves the king; in others, he inadvertently destroys him. We know Logan dies, but it does feel less likely that Waystar Royco survives.) Drowning is a constant feature of Eliot's poems, but so is baptism and renewed life. It is difficult to determine the meaning of water in either instance, except that it doesn't discriminate as a life or death bringer, which is both beautiful and terrifying.
Parallels & Predictions: Piecing The Plot & Poetry Together
To repeat again, as this show is wont to do: “Crawl in a circle and close your eyes!” Logan Roy shouts during a game of Boar On A Floor. It’s an allegory, like many games on the series, and proudly says the quiet part out loud: Logan always wins. Here’s a little boar on the floor reference in The Four Quartets:
"We move above the moving tree In light upon the figured leaf And hear upon the sodden floor Below, the boarhound and the boar Pursue their pattern as before But reconciled among the stars."
We’ve seen the L.O.G.A.N. system at work many times and with many people. He dangles a carrot, a morsel of love, as each character attempts to play the game over and over while expecting different results. They are doomed to crawl in that circle, to play that blind game, as Logan angrily shouts, “It’s fun!” And this game doesn't end in death. The children still ask. "What would dad do?"
Games on Succession (which are a consistent refrain), it turns out, are rarely fun and are often designed to humiliate or inflict pain. The same goes when characters say “I’m just kidding” after an eviscerating remark. Logan thinks life is a game, and as he says, games should be taken seriously. And because Logan explicitly makes the rules, there is no winning, just trudging around the board, passing Go, and collecting $200. The games are essentially Sisyphean tasks that the kids wouldn’t be able to win even if they were actually competent enough to run the company. And yet they keep rolling the boulder. It’s endless. The repetition. It ends where it begins.
"Every phrase and every sentence is an end and a beginning, Every poem an epitaph. And any action Is a step to the block, to the fire, down the sea's throat Or to an illegible stone: and that is where we start. We die with the dying: See, they depart, and we go with them. We are born with the dead: See, they return, and bring us with them. The moment of the rose and the moment of the yew-tree Are of equal duration. A people without history Is not redeemed from time, for history is a pattern Of timeless moments."
Please also note the use of “the rose” and “the yew tree,” which are the names of Logan’s siblings Rose and Ewan, which derives from yew-tree. Other important name comparisons include Kendall’s association to spring/river valley; Siobhan’s nickname either a knife (Shiv) or Pinky (a variation of the name Rose); Roman’s connection to Romulus/Corialanus; Tom’s name meaning “twin” because there was already someone named Judas in the bible HELLO; Logan’s name meaning little hollow, which recalls another Eliot poem, The Hollow Men.
We know this show is a game, one that isn't fun at all, and one whose rules Logan made up. Even when there's a winner, there's no winner. So it's almost futile to play at all. That said, it’s impossible to make sense of any of it all without the ending — to confirm this ball has been rolling toward an inevitable conclusion, but given the show’s ending has probably occurred already, here are my thoughts:
This may feel a bit on the nose given we’ve already seen this almost happen to “the Kurt Cobain of floaties,” but it would certainly be poetic. This could be sad (launched from a bridge); empowering (a la The Awakening); or metaphorical (a drug overdose). At some point Kendall says, "If dad didn’t need me right now I wouldn’t know what I would be for." The kids exist with Logan as their sun; they are moons, satellites, in orbit. And when their sun dies out, they repeat the motions in the cold, slowly losing their patterns and motions. The term is science is a rogue planet and the following lines from the poem remind me of Kendall and his broken, hollow stare.
“It would be the same at the end of the journey, If you came at night like a broken king, If you came by day not knowing what you came for, It would be the same, when you leave the rough road And turn behind the pig-sty to the dull facade And the tombstone. And what you thought you came for Is only a shell, a husk of meaning From which the purpose breaks only when it is fulfilled If at all. Either you had no purpose Or the purpose is beyond the end you figured And is altered in fulfilment.”
Any victory feels like it will be a Pyrrhic victory regardless when you've had to systematically take down everyone you love to achieve it. The same lines above can echo here "the purpose is beyond the end you figured/And is altered in fulfilment." A hollow victory. The Fisher King question Logan poses is, "Who can replace me?" Logan wanted each of his children to display the killer instinct. Kendall’s backwards journey through Dreamsong 29 may very well see him realize he is, in fact, the killer his dad always wanted — with open eyes. This will probably involve taking down his siblings. In this version, winning is a lot like losing, which feels very Succession.
These Shakespearean histories and tragedies rarely end well for existing houses. With Richard III (the-multiple-lineage-ending war of the roses) and Hamlet (the-whole-house-dies-but-a-norwegian-king-swoops-in-to-take-it-all dynastic struggle) references abound. We may just see a new house rise up and rinse and repeat. This would probably also occur if the kids take each other down and leave it open for another party. We saw last season that Roman thought he had an in with Mattson until it didn’t serve Mattson anymore. I see the same thing happening between Roman and Mencken. This puts Mencken and Mattson in a position to take over, which may make Mattson win it or…
When Mattson is introduced, he is referenced as a trickster. Generally, in mythology, this character is quite intelligent or in possession of secret knowledge, and he uses it for trickery and commandeering situations. (Is that blood thing real???). Hamlet concludes with every major character killing the other with their own tragic flaws until a third party Scandinavian comes in to take the crown with no necessary action or bloodshed at all. We already know he's unscrupulous; what is his end game? It reminds me of one of his early lines to Roman, which would be an eerie foreshadowing:
“Success doesn’t really interest me anymore, it’s too easy. Analysis + capital + execution. Fucking, anyone can do that. But failure, that’s a secret. Just as much failure as possible as fast as possible, burn that shit out, that’s interesting.”
We’ve seen it happen before (which is why it should happen again). We’ve also seen Tom remove the thin veneer of his ambitions to the point where he almost feels like Richard III. He has played the fool, which is Shakespearean estimation, is often equivalent to the trickster. This would be a fun and distorted parallel to Shiv offering this job to him for Logan to offer it to her. This would probably happen in conjunction with Mattson winning. As I mentioned earlier, the name Tom means “twin” and the apostle Tom was only called as such because there were already one too many “Judas” in the mix. He's also from Minnesota (the twin cities!), so this is becoming very real, you know???
While we know Tom has betrayed Shiv before, we also know Greg betrayed Shiv and Tom when he spoke to Geri in the first season about Tom having a press conference on cruises. He leads Tom to believe Shiv has betrayed him, getting one over on both of them. There may also be something with the Rule of 3 and being betrayed 3 times that feels biblical. The show also makes TONS of references to holding on to blackmail for opportune moments. Will we see something like this?
I’m not a big believer that Greg will fail so far upwards that he will win (this would feel like a betrayal in its own right), but do I believe there’s a world where Greg gets himself on a piece of paper with a question mark. Maybe???
This is my personal hope because I want the Tom and Jerry allusion to be real more than any other I put together (we love a good cat and mouse game). If Mattson wins, he needs a US CEO. Geri has collected a massive amount of dirt on everyone. And to call back to season 1’s interim CEO discussions, Shiv says, “I don’t like Geri. But I don’t hate Geri either.” It would feel particularly good given how much time and effort Logan spent clarifying Geri would be terrible at the position. Especially as Logan disparaging someone generally means he’s afraid of what they can do.
I’ll end at the ending. Or conclude where Eliot did on The Four Quartets:
"We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time. Through the unknown, unremembered gate When the last of earth left to discover Is that which was the beginning; At the source of the longest river The voice of the hidden waterfall And the children in the apple-tree Not known, because not looked for But heard, half-heard, in the stillness Between two waves of the sea. Quick now, here, now, always— A condition of complete simplicity (Costing not less than everything) And all shall be well and All manner of thing shall be well When the tongues of flames are in-folded Into the crowned knot of fire And the fire and the rose are one."
PS. Given ‘Pinky’ is another name for ‘Rose’ does this mean Shiv wins??? JK let’s just watch the show tonight and laugh at our predictions in the morning.

I recently attended my first Latin Mass, and it turned out to be a fascinating and enjoyable experience. The Latin Mass was a departure from my usual worship service, offering a unique perspective. Initially, I found it challenging to comprehend the Latin language used during the Mass, and it sounded unfamiliar to me. However, despite the language barrier, I could appreciate the beauty in its rhythm and solemnity.
What struck me the most was the emphasis placed on the Eucharist and its consecration. The Latin Mass seemed to center around the profound significance of the Holy Communion. It was different from what I was accustomed to, particularly as there was no requirement to say "amen" before receiving the Holy Communion. This deviation from the norm piqued my curiosity and sparked further contemplation.
It was unfortunate to learn that the morning Saturday Mass I attended did not count towards the Sunday Mass attendance required for Catholics. I've become a systemadmin for my roommates. They also happen to be my family members. We all moved to the states together about 10 years ago. It's a huge family and we are super tight. We occupy a floor here in this apartment building. Imagine the Home Alone family just instead of a big house it's a bunch of apartments lol.
Anyway. Many of us are PC gamers, particularly the 20-30 year old generation of cousins. (My aunt and uncle had 10 children.) While I'm not exactly going to say I am a tech aficionado I'm sort of known as the "computer" guy, I have an IT degree (although I've never put it to real use) and I have a reputation for fixing pleb problems on my friends/family's laptops and PCs. It is usually something simple like installing Windows for them in a very "clean" manner, a hardware thing, or just to look for a workaround for a bug. I use Linux myself simply out of personal reasons, it's been a longtime interest of mine.
The hefty majority of use AMD computers. It wasn't until very recently that the Linux lightbulb went off for everyone else besides me. It wasn't even to fix an issue or for any specific benefits, just an interest thing, it has quickly become part of our lives honestly. It's been happening for a while but what started really kicking things off recently was I was the only one in this age-group of my family to get access to the new Counter Strike 2 limited beta. With a small crowd of my family around me showing off Counter Strike 2, my brother remarked on how insane it was that the OS I was using to play it wasn't on Windows. That one remark snowballed. I said "Yeah right?? It's as simple as this" and then I opened up Steam and showed the "Steam Play" sections of the settings menu. "It comes built right into Steam for Linux, it's called Proton. It pretty much can play any Windows game, besides a very small handful." This blew my brother's mind and became a huge talking point. He began pestering me in the most wonderful ways "Can Linux do this" "Will I still be able to keep that" pondering things and soon enough we all began talking about distros, where Arch comes in. I explained to them the difference between rolling distros and LTS/stable ones. He wasn't interested in distro/OS that "got a new version every months or year" I said that a rolling release gives you the benefit of a system that you install once and update forever, at the expense of having to "stay on top of updates", ie system maintenance. I said that this isn't really something you can just explain or learn in one sitting, it takes familiarity and experience. But it isn't "hard", it's as simple as the idea of being aware of what's on your system. This part went in one ear, right out the other for him 😂 We looked over at the elephant in the room, which is a nearly 7 year old Arch Linux installation on my PC, and then back at eachother. ".....yo why don't you just do it"
So there goes my brother, now a happy Arch Linux Plasma desktop user with his newly riced out panel scheme he is obsessed with (I told him not to change too many defaults but he just kept on going lol) it was so nice and surreal to see that obsession on someone else in my family, that I'm not the only one who gets the tingles from seeing OSs that aren't Mac or Windows. He opted for KDE Plasma because of the mix of familiarity, and instant access to Freesync support for his monitor, and the sheer amount of customization. I personally use GNOME but I know that's quite a bold interface I wouldn't try to push it onto someone who doesn't seem interested. The rest of my family began to follow suit, Arch Linux and KDE and Proton became the main talking point of 2023.
Sara's bluetooth headphones were literally the only issue and it was because they were some weird knockoff brand from overseas. Everything else works out the box, for everyone. I swear to god I'm not exaggerating, it has been SIGNIFICANTLY less stressful to be the "little bug fixer computer dude" in the family, since I switched us all to Linux. I AM THE ONLY GNOME USER, EVERYONE ELSE PREFERRED PLASMA. I think that's hilarious but it is what it is lol. Friday is now update day, I go to 3 different apartments and update all the Arch installations for my family. I want to make a movie out of this or something, life is fucking awesome. The only one who hasn't boarded this bizarre penguin train is my cousin DJ. He simply doesn't want to change anything, the tried & true aint-broke-don't-fix-it type. He'll come around 😎🐧
