2021.12.13 13:27 Gatsby890 Nippon (fan made) roster

The whole of my Nippon is too large to make a single post part 1 will be roster part 2 will be history
Nippon Units
The armies of Nippon focus on speed, and unconventional tactics. Even though they have the capacity to fight open battles they much prefer ambushes, and skirmishes. Full of skilled archers and possessing powerful monsters they have little use for gunpowder, or slow moving artillery.
Lords
Shogun:
Those Samurai that have acquired vast tracts of territory and subordinates will proclaim themselves to be shogun-a lord of war. One does not claim this title lightly for doing so is an open declaration of one’s own worthiness of the title. Those that cannot back these claims are swiftly destroyed by those who can. Trained from birth in combat and strategy a samurai that proves worthy of the title is a force to behold on the battlefield and their armies carve out vast domains in the ever-disputed lands of Nippon.
Shogun take to the field of battle armed and armored in the best equipment money can buy. Often their swords are of similar craftsmanship to the works of Brettionan master smiths. As with all of the samurai caste they employ garasu or glass steel in the construction of their equipment. This is an incredibly rigid but sharp form of steel that informs Nipponese craftsmanship. The reason Nipponese armor is woven from scale and silk rather than forged from plate can be attributed solely to garasu. it is more likely to shatter than deform and smiths find that working it into small plates is the only way to produce a reliable armor from it. In the case of swords, a softer steel spine will be used to brace the garasu edge. This gives Nipponese katanas both their unique curved shape, and their infamous dual coloration.
When shogun take to battle, they rarely do so on foot. Many will ride to war on the warhorses that have served them since their childhood, but some will take more exotic mounts such as the noble Ki-rin, or the fearsome kamaitchi
Shogun are hybrid lords with both a bow, and sword
Oni Shogun:
Oni are a part of Nippon as much as humans are and on occasion one appears with the cunning and charisma to acquire a vast domain. They will declare themselves shogun and attempt to conquer Nippon. Large, strong, and equipped in the best armor they can afford Oni that demonstrate this level of cunning are some of the most dangerous combatants in the world. Fully aware of just what they can take, and what will be required for victory they lead their forces into charges that at first can seem reckless serving as living shields for the men behind them. Meeting this charge is also inadvisable, for the Oni of Nippon are not so hunger driven as their western kin and grow up fighting the mutated beasts of their homeland. They are incredibly strong, surprisingly agile, and very skilled; once they reach a foe there is no defense except prayer.
Negi:
The warrior priests of Nippon fulfill a critical role in the army. Repelling the corruption that springs forth when the armies of Nippon take to the field and providing magical support. All with magic potential in Nippon are expected to join a temple at an early age lest they be possessed by demons. Despite what they claim neither Nippon nor her people have entirely recovered from the demonic invasion of the great catastrophe, and the Nipponese are both especially vulnerable to corruption, and quick to recognize the machinations of the dark gods. The priesthood is thus critical to the continued function of their society. Without them many more Nipponese would be unable to pull out of the temptations set before them by the dark gods, and monsters would quickly swallow the villages that the temples protect. Some especially powerful, and ambitious priests will lead armies when the need arises.
There are dozens of deities worshipped by the Nipponese but three above others. Each comes with their own unique lore of magic based around their teachings. Amaterasu- goddess of the sun bringer of light, and the purifier her temples are spread throughout Nippon, and her priestesses bring her blessing of both fire that burns, and fire that cleanses to the battlefield. Daiko God of war and shadows husband of Amaterasu, and chief of the pantheon is the Nipponese deity of darkness, he governs the forests and caves - the dark places where the great chaos monsters roam. It is his responsibility to prepare the Nipponese to face these beasts even while he holds their masters at bay. His priests bring his blessings of darkness that hides, and darkness that chokes to the battlefields. Inari is the goddess of fertility, growth, and family. First daughter of Amaterasu she is responsible for ensuring ample crops, and for the wellbeing of pregnant women. Her influence ensures that despite chaos corruption the Nipponese can grow enough crops to feed themselves, and she reduces the number of mutants born to them. Her priestesses bring her blessing of healing, and warmth to the battlefield enabling the Nipponese to fight harder than they would otherwise.
Negi can mount either warhorses or warshrines
Heroes:
Kensei:
Those exceptionally skilled samurai can earn the title of sword saint. Dedicated wholly to the code of Bushido, and to the study of combat these elite fighters can meet anything short of a chaos champion blow for blow. Their skill as archers is unparalleled in the human realms, and rumor has it they can pick the wings off a fly at fifty yards. Regardless of the truth of these rumors Kensei have taken the heads of deva, dreadlords, chaos champions and on one occasion a keeper of secrets. They are not to be taken lightly or if one can help it at all.
Mounts: warhorse, Ki-Rin
Shugoki:
Especially skilled Oni take on the role of shugoki. These warriors are even more heavily armored than their lesser kin, and are even harder to kill. Despite what their seemingly reckless tactics would indicate shugoki are incredibly skilled, and patient. They know exactly how tough they are and are more than happy to let a few blows bounce off their armor if it allows them to get close enough to bring their club to bear on enemy formations. Such is their strength and durability that they have been known to charge through dark elf crossbow volleys with enough vitality left over to throw the formation into chaos.
Shinshoku:
Mage hero (see Negi)
Shinobi:
The greatest students of the ninja schools shinobi are the true masters of the art of shadow warfare. Taught acting, combat, acrobatics, codebreaking, survival, and engineering among other skills there are few structures they can not break, few secrets they cannot learn, and few enemies they cannot kill. Clan eshin learned what is has of infiltration and assassination by reverse engineering how these masters were breaking into their strongholds. So skilled are the shinobi in their arts that rumor has it one got close enough to Malekith to jam a knife into his armor.
Melee dueling hero with stalk, vanguard deployment, and poison attacks.
Infantry:
Ashigaru:
In Nippon all men are expected to fight in defense of their lands and clan, as such all boys are taught the basics of weaponry at a young age. The most promising peasant boys will be taken by the local nobility for official training and equipped with whatever gear this lord sees fit to provide them. In exchange they will be expected to fight for this lord even before their clan.
yari, swords, or bows
Sohei:
Those without magic potential who join the temples of Nippon typically become monks, those warriors seeking relief or purpose often become Sohei or warrior monks. Dedicated solely to training their bodies and skills, and often tasked with destroying the unholy, or with protecting the temples from chaos mutants Sohei are skilled fighters. When the local lord goes to war the warrior monks of the local temples accompany him both to protect the souls that compose his army, and to learn whatever they can fighting his enemies as their gods command them.
Kagi yari (Armor piercing, anti-large, charge defense), No-dachi (armor piercing)
Ninja:
The graduates of Ninja schools Ninja are not so skilled as the shinobi they aspire to become. Still, they are stealthy and skilled combatants who excel at infiltration or flanking maneuvers. Especially when supplied with their famous fire bombs
*stealthy infantry with precursor projectiles but low armor*
Bo-hiya:
In the lands of Nippon chaos corruption is an ever-present threat. It seeps into the land in a way it does in few other places. Among the warpstone, and mutated wildlife occasionally a useful material will be discovered. Ikiti iru Hi is one such substance. Harvested from the stalk of a mutated rice plant living fire is a potent liquid explosive that seems to have a mind of its own. It will seek out other living things, seep as deep into them as it can then ignite. Among the crowning achievements of the nipponese smiths is the fire arrow- a garasu arrowhead containing a small charge of living fire. Once lodged into a living thing the Ikiti Iru Hi attempts to ignite all at once causing an explosion that fragments the garasu into shards and pushes shrapnel into its target dealing yet greater damage.
Because of the danger inherit in attempting to harvest Ikiti, and its potential to set entire crop fields alight there are very few people willing or even able to farm it, and they must exercise utmost caution at all times. As such it is incredibly expensive and only the richest of samurai can afford to keep even a single unit stocked with this munition.
Despite all the myths surrounding it Ikiti is mindless, or at least not very intelligent and will detonate when lodged into any magic field. This includes not only the souls of the living but undead, constructs, and daemons. In addition, if sufficiently agitated simple proximity to a “soul” may be sufficient to provoke an ignition. To prevent a premature detonation those equipped with Ikiti charges carry them in copper quivers carefully separated from each other, and the body of the man carrying them. This copper quiver has three layers an outer layer of copper for strength and rigidity, a middle layer containing the down of native waterfowl to prevent jostling, and finally an inner layer of leather to keep the arrowheads from touching. This system keeps the ikiti arrows docile until they can be fired, or until an enemy gets an unlucky strike.
(armor piercing)
Cavalry: 5
Samurai:
The nobility of Nippon are descended from the most successful clans. Often wealthy enough to afford horses they are formidable opponents trained nearly from birth to fight whether to take to the field with bows or spears they are formidable opponents the equal of the knights of the west.
Elite warriors armed with either a bow or yari
Samurai retainers:
The most elite samurai earn the title of retainers and join their lord as his personal guard. This is considered a great armor and carries significant benefits but actually relying on a body guard in the field of battle is shameful so they are often left behind to guard the lords keep, or deployed as an elite wing of horse archers.
Ki-rin riders:
The snow beasts are magical creatures that inhabit the highest peaks of the eastern world. Incredibly durable, agile, and intelligent they are heavily sought after by the Nipponese as mounts. To acquire a ki-rin is no easy feat the beasts are courageous, noble, and possess an animalistic cunning. They will bear none but the noblest and bravest of men into battle. Those that believe that they may have what it takes must first climb to the snowy mountain tops the beasts call home. In and of itself a dangerous feat that kills many. Then they must convince a Ki-Rin to accompany them back down.
The snow beasts possess white scales, and fur as well as a single horn. They are gentle by nature and survive off what few plants grow in the high mountains. This same empathy is what makes them so difficult to ride. Ki-rin are unwilling to hurt anything with pure intentions including animals that try to hunt them unless they have no other options. However, they are perfectly willing to kill those who act out of greed or malice. This makes them enemies of not only the dark gods but most sentient races. Despite that, they are sometimes willing to aid those with noble bearing and goals and will answer their riders when called to battle.
Ki-rin are the fastest, strongest mounts known to the Nipponese and they are often deployed as the premier shock cavalry. Keeping with Nipponese doctrine of speed and power Ki-rin are often unarmored and rely on their durable scales, and mist cloak to protect themselves. Ki-rin are too rare to be deployed as horse archers and so all Ki-rin riders are expected to put aside their bows in exchange for armor piercing omi spears, or if expecting to face armored cavalry or monsters Sankaku spears (armor piercing anti-large).
Monsters:
Oni
The descendants of Ogres who arrived on the island around -3,000 IC they have developed in isolation of their western kin. The Oni of Nippon have completely adopted the customs of their human neighbors and have developed along with the history of clan warfare. The island of Nippon lacks any creature large and social enough to be reliably tamed as a mount, and as such the Oni have turned to other means of warfare. In keeping with the local traditions Oni adorn demonic masks when they take to the battlefield as well as heavy armor constructed in the Nipponese style. They wield massive two-handed clubs called kanabo and have been credited with destroying terracotta warriors. Fast, agile, and incredibly durable killing even a single oni is a difficult feat requiring armor piercing weapons, overwhelming force, or powerful magic. When they expect to face fewer monsters and larger infantry forces Oni will eschew their kanabo in favor of dual ararebo sacrificing the devastating single swings in exchange for the ability to better target multiple lesser enemies.
On rare occasions some Oni will take up the practice of archery. Viewed as cowardly by their kin both for their refusal to shield their comrades, and for their refusal to meet their enemies face to face only a handful of Oni have the strength of will to pursue this art. The few that do purchase large bows and seek out human masters to teach them. Given the size and strength of an ogre an arrow from this bow is closer to a bastille bolt than anything else, and those skilled in their use are just as good as any archer of the human realms. They are absolutely devastating on the battlefield, and during the failed invasion of Khuresh in 1035 the slayers of the ephemeral river (so named for this battle) composed of oni archers played a key role in the battle of the Emerald Delta, where they brought down two Soma mind creepers with careful positioning, and no small degree of skill. Without them that battle would have likely ended in the slaughter of the Nipponese force rather than a fighting retreat. To the modern day the descendants of these men continue their traditions and have been credited with the deaths of numerous dangerous beasts.
Kitsune:
The land of Nippon is home to all manner of magical creatures. Kitsune are one such creature. The magic that created them blessed them with long life, intelligence, and a mischievous streak a mile wide. Foxes the size of a horse and possessing nine tails they are viewed by the Nipponese with suspicion. Many of the tales that make their way to the west speak of the Kitsunes love of mischief, and their lack of morality. But this is an incomplete picture of the creatures. Kitsune are ambush predators first and foremost they are not generally interested in causing misery but love setting traps, and often play games where they challenge each other to escape them. Humans and Oni who they recognize as being intelligent enough to escape are often unwilling participants in these games. However, these same games are usually not fatal, and the Kitsune will usually let the player go if they appear to be in danger or if they appear dehydrated. When the Tengu mount raids on Nipponese towns Kitsune will frequently come to their aid ambushing the birdmen when they land, and leading retaliatory forces to their hidden encampments. There are two kinds of Kitsune known to the Nipponese the Seishin, and the Kasai.
Seishin are connected to the grey wind of Ulgu. Stealthy and cunning they inhabit the deep forests where they frequently hunt the more corrupt beasts and fight small beastmen herds. Seishin are the unsung heroes of Nippon. By protecting their hunting grounds, they help keep the rest of the Island safe. For this reason, despite all the trouble they cause the Nipponese regard them highly and hunting them is forbidden. In fact, Kitsune often lead hunters to and from the gathering points of beastmen brey-herds providing the Nipponese with weeks more warning than they would otherwise receive. They will also join the forces that march to fight these brey herds both as guides and skirmishers. Their instinctive connection to Ulgu allows them to cloak themselves in shadows, and their strength and speed make them excellent for hunting archers, ambushing scouts, and running down fleeing foes.
Found rarely along the coast or near rivers Kasai are linked to the red wind of aqshy. Extremely playful, and prone to emotional extremes they have a reputation as dangerous tricksters. Kasai are known for stealing food, stealing valuable effects to force participation in whatever game they have in mind, and setting fires near buildings. Despite this they will actively aid Nipponese armies if they perceive a mutual threat or if they are offered sufficient compensation. As such, they are an uncommon sight in the armies of the far east, and are famed among marauding chaos hordes, and dark elf raiders alike for their speed and fire breath.
Vermillion warbirds:
Found not only in cathay but across the eastern world vermillion birds are viewed by the Nipponese as sacred to Amaterasu. Her priestesses will breed, and raise the birds in her temples, and when the armies of nippon go to war the birds will accompany them. By all rights miniature phoenixes vermillion birds practically glow with power, and their feathers can give off enough heat to distort the air around them. The presence of vermillion warbirds is viewed as a both a good, and bad omen by the Nipponese- a sign that the light bringer watches them. When directed by a priestess of their goddess, or a monk small flocks of these birds can silence enemy artillery or harass archers. The sheer heat given off by their bodies makes it difficult to stand near them, and their talons are strong enough to rip huge chunks of flesh out of lightly armored warriors. Nowhere have the birds better proved their worth than during the last great battle of the Nipponese Navy – the battle of Okakana in 1512 when a large flock guided by a priestess of Amaterasu were able to delay communication on the black ark Tower of Blessed Dread. Allowing the Nipponese navy to destroy a large portion of its escort fleet and damage the ship enough to force it to retreat.
**Raiju:**A gigantic hybrid of bat and ray raiju are one of the most majestic beasts of the far sea. Soaring above, and below the waves where they hunt birds, and large fish. Fiercely intelligent but not quite civilized especially cunning Nipponese nobles have been able recruit the beasts into their armies in exchange for safe breeding grounds or food. Such minor sacrifices are well worth it when the beast calls down blasts of lighting on entire enemy formations.
(magic attacks)
War machines:
War shrine:
Not all priests of Nippon have the sheer power required to channel their gods might into blessings on their own. When called to war these lesser preists will make up the difference by taking war shrines into battle. Pulled by either monks or penitent worshippers these shrines are constructed by the temple monks and blessed at every stage by priests. They are adorned in the iconography of the god they give worship to, and serve as both a magical focus, and mobile places of worship.
(shrine of Amaterasu)- increase stamina drain of enemies, reduce stamina drain of allies
(shrine of Daiko)- mortis engine effect
(shrine of inari) – regeneration aura
Komainu:
The Nipponese have long placed symbolic guardians at the entrances to their temples, noble symbols to protect the places the dark gods could most easily enter from. According to Nipponese belief these statues invite the presence of guardian beasts who fight to protect the vulnerable entryway from darker forces. The arrival of Clan Eshin around -700 provided a possible means of animating these statues. Following the invasion the nipponese noticed that the skaven had found a way to make warpstone into a powerful energy source through the use of runecraft. Though the Preists of the time expressly forbid any warpstone experiments for fear of corruption they began investigating the possibility of crystallizing a purer power from their gods. When the breakthrough came in 1,267 they had almost given up. At the time a wealthy high elf merchant had managed to hire a fire mage from Tor Elithis to help protect his ship. This mage carried in his possession a fire ruby. During his stay at port a local priest recognized the ruby for what was and inquired about its origin. He brought this knowledge to his temples head priest who attempted to hire the mage to teach a select group of preists how to replicate the feat. When that failed the matter was escalated and the high priest of Daiko hired a Ninja school to kidnap the mage.. they succeeded. Over the course of the next several years the priests had this mage tortured until he eventually revealed the method to crystalizing Aqshy. Though unwilling to risk channeling Aqshy the knowledge gave the priests a starting point by 1283 they had succeeded in concentrating the purified power of daiko into a deep black crystal. When the emperor heard of this feat, he commanded the priests to share their knowledge with the other temples.
Before the fall of the Nipponese Empire there existed enough unity that the preists of several deities were able to come together and use their knowledge of enchantments combined with their newfound power stones to devise a process by which stone could be animated. They used this knowledge to produce the Komainu, however after the fall of the empire it was no longer possible to drum up the resources necessary to produce more. Of the six pairs made, today only two exist guarding the entrance to the temple district in shinseina. They will be activated only in the most desperate of circumstances and returned to their places as soon as the danger is passed.
*temple dogs are large expensive units deployed in groups of two, they are massive heavily armored units that can devastate entire formations of infantry*.
Mounts: (not available except as a mount for lords/heroes)
Kamaitchi
Characters:
Kensuke
Seeking advantages in the clan wars kensuke went west first to Cathay and Ind, then to the lands of Kislev, the Empire, and Bretonnia. During his travels he realized the chaos of the border princes presented an opportunity. traveling back home he convinced his clan and whatever allies he could gather to accompany him back. Disguising their movements as those of mercenaries he was able to negotaige a contract with a wealthy but relatively unimportant prince, who he soon betrayed and overthrew. Now he seeks to expand.
OtakeSaid to be Akio reborn a cunning and charismatic general who has used his success pushing off dark elf raiders to build a powerful alliance and now declares himself emperor of Nippon. Claims to have single handedly killed a war hydra
Yatsumi
With most of Daikos attention dedicated to the conflict with the ruinous powers, he has precious little attention to give to other matters. His wife Amaterasu sees to these duties. As the de facto head of the gods her priestesses see to the day-to-day needs of the Nipponese this has granted them immense political power something they have routinely taken advantage of. In this time of civil war, Yatsumi as the high priestess of Amaterasu has power in excess of most Shogun. Preferring a soft approach whenever possible she is non the less capable of summoning armies on a whim as she has done in recent days with rumors indicating Norscans are looking to settle on the island.

2021.03.10 02:27 koreawut Maki Itoh's entrance theme

First, a link to Itoh-chan's Twitter account with the lyrics in original form: HERE
Second, a link to the song itself on Youtube: HERE
Third, a link to a tweet of the English transation: HERE
Finally, I used a kanji to romaji converter, listened to the song, and set it up in stanzas.

(chorus repeat)
Further note: Itoh is currently (or was... I'm not sure lol but her picture is still on the YT) part of an idol group called Tokiwoikiru, who perform the song.
Now for a bit of fun. Itoh was originally in an idol group called LinQ. See if you can find her in this music video!
And some more fun: After moving to wrestling (mostly) full time, she had a music video with fellow TJPW wrestler Mizuki. This song was her previous entrance theme, and Mizuki was a very big part of Itoh's story for a long time.
TJPW actually has a few idols...

Overview

Towa Kiseki is a female Virtual YouTuber who started her activities on March 1, 2019 under the agency Pictoria whose aim was to create a new generation of VTubers bridging the gap between the virtual world and the real world. Looking at her usual content, you can see this in her first video wherein she collaborated with a real band as well as the various videos where Towa interacts with the real world via tablet devices.

The Red Frame Kai Incident

At the beginning of her activities, she didn't have many followers on Twitter or subscribers to her YouTube channel, but due to an incident that occurred around noon on March 4, she has shown an unusual growth. It all started with an innocuous tweet of support, saying that the "big triangle parts" she was carrying reminded them of the Tactical Arms IIL Delta Form of Red Frame Kai from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED VS Astray.
Towa Kiseki, who apparently found it during an ego search, dutifully looked up the name of the mecha and angrily retweeted it, causing an unexpected uproar.
Gundam enthusiasts who saw this exchange rapidly spread the name of Towa Kiseki as well as Red Frame Kai. As the number of her followers grew, she started posting more and more stories, and like a comedian, she began to buy Gundam models, manga, music, and game products related to this mobile suit (The Gunpla that she bought on her own would later be made by the staff, but they were connected in an unexpected way.) On March 4, Towa Kiseki's Twitter followers increased by nearly 30,000 and her YouTube channel subscribers exceeded 10,000. On March 6, the number of subscribers exceeded 40,000.
During this event, MG 1/100 Gundam Astray Red Frame Kai became top 10 of Amazon's Hobby ranking and was then sold out consequently raising its price tag on Amazon.

Evolt Incident

After being inactive on Twitter for a time, Towa resurfaced with a short and simple tweet that merely says "Yo" accompanied with a raised hand emoji. Although the tweet was simple enough, Kamen Rider fans were quick to compare her tweet to Evolt's recognizable line and started spreading the fanon 'Towa Kiseki = Evolt' to which she responded with "Who the heck is Evolt?" accompanied with an image of the scene from the show but with Towa superimposed on top. Needless to say, this event created another buzz for her in social media.

Reiwa Kiseki

During the turn of the era, with a new emperor crowned in Japan, the Reiwa (令和) era begun and the Heisei era ended. Fans of Towa quickly noted that her surname Towa (斗和) was pretty similar and so they made fun of her calling her Reiwa Kiseki and so on. This ended up once again getting her a lot of buzz.

Insanely Realistic Live Head Crowdfunding

Towa Kiseki loved fashion and make-up but was unable to enjoy them freely due to the nature of being virtual. Because of this, she started a crowdfunding campaign on April 13 with the idea of creating a life-like head of herself which could be attached to a mannequin which she can then dress up and post pictures of in Instagram. The crowdfunding campaign had some bizarre stretch goals such as the following: 5 million yen will lead to a head made of pure gold, 10 million yen will lead to the creation of a high tech head mounted on top of tank treads.
The project only had a target amount of 100,000 yen within its duration of one month. Surprisingly, the campaign reached its target amount within just 8 minutes and then reached 1 million yen on the 14th minute. On May 11, the day before the project was to end, the amount has already exceeded 3 million yen and the project was faced with the unexpected concerns of how to spend all this money raised.
The amount of support further increased due to a mysterious last spurt among the supporters. By May 12th 8 PM, the campaign has already reached 6 million yen. At this time, Towa's producer couldn't handle it anymore and decided to escape reality by going to a yakiniku. In the meantime, at around 9 PM, the amount exceeded 8 million yen which Towa mentioned was already higher than her agency's capital. At 10:30 pm, the amount surpassed 10 million yen and by 11 PM, the amount exceeded the capital of the company including its capital reserve which made the president cry.
By the end of it, there were 3,792 patrons contributing to a sum of 14,749,500 JPY. Towa stated that she will not spend a single penny of the support money on anything other than the head.
On January 15 2020, the end result of the campaign was finally revealed where the head was showcased. The hair was 100% human hair and it had puppet-like controls which allowed it to say lines by remote control. It has since then become the primary feature of Towa's Instagram.

Editor's Notes
Thank you for reading this week's spotlight! I'll be perfectly honest and all of this info was from the sources above and since I'm bad at Japanese, a lot of the information was machine translated so some information may be wrong. That being said, Towa's story is incredibly fascinating and I wasn't able to chronicle all of her shenanigans listed from the sources. If you're curious, do take a look at them and to see the other weird events she's been a part of.
If there's a VTuber you think we could spotlight for the future then feel free to comment about it and depending on the circumstances we may be able to feature them. If you want to help write one of the spotlights on a VTuber that you know about, then feel free to reach out as well.

2019.11.24 14:11 sillyunikid A Beginner's Guide to BJJ (please read me white belts)

This guide aims to shed some light on the otherwise confusing basic principles and concepts of jiu-jitsu to start beginners off. This is by no means comprehensive and is aimed towards BEGINNERS; by the time you are capable of critiquing this guide, you will be well past the stage where this will be useful and will no longer require a stranger to hold your hand as you choke your way through the ranks of BJJ. I would recommend familiarizing yourself with sections 1-7 in this guide before/after your first lesson
*DISCLAIMER: some personal opinions are explicitly expressed (mostly during gear recommendations and tips)*
1) Basic Hygiene/Etiquette

2) Goal of Ground Fighting/Grappling
To increase control over your opponent while on the ground (positional dominance), eventually placing him in a situation where he is forced to surrender (submission holds)

3) Basic Positions
This is a basic list of positions in grappling that you should be familiar with and has been listed in decreasing order of dominance. As a general rule of thumb, being on top grants you greater mobility, striking capacity and the assistance of gravity which translates to a natural advantage. This is extremely evident in MMA fights where being on the bottom is a distinct disadvantage due to ground and pound; in sport grappling however, being on the bottom may confer some advantages as the person on top has his ability to strike nullified. As a whole, positions 1-7 are thus considered advantageous while 9-15 are disadvantageous while 8 is neutral. Some practitioners specialize in specific techniques and can make a traditionally disadvantageous position into an advantageous one [eg: 10th planet students are usually extremely well versed in bottom half guard and will view that position as advantageous]
  1. Mount and backmount (top)
  2. knee on belly (top)
  3. side control (top)
  4. scarf hold (top)
  5. north south (top)
  6. turtle (top)
  7. half-guard (top)
  8. closed guard – NEUTRAL POINT* (top or bottom can go either way depending on rules)
  9. half-guard (bottom)
  10. turtle (bottom)
  11. north south (bottom)
  12. scarf hold (bottom)
  13. side control
  14. knee on belly (bottom)
  15. mount and back mount (bottom)
To clear up any confusion, when it is said that “Y is mounted on X”, it refers to Y being on top and straddling X. However, when “person X is in person Y’s guard”, Y is actually on the bottom using his legs to control person X who is on top. This is a concept that is confusing to many beginners when describing the positions they are in. Just remember that the guard is unique in that while the person is technically on the bottom, he retains some semblance of control. Other positions exist but they are outside of the scope of this guide and should NOT be focused on until required because they contain concepts that are not integral to understanding basic BJJ
Common Contextual/Advanced Positions
  1. Guard variations (butterfly, deep half, quarter guard, rubber guard)
  2. Open guard
  3. Mount variations (S and Tech Mount)
  4. Ashi Garami and its variations
  5. 50/50

4) Transitions
As the term implies, this category involves moves that allow for practitioners to climb the hierarchy of positions to be in a better position to finish their opponents. Transitions from certain positions are named while others are not – those that you ought to be familiar with have been listed below

5) Submissions
The “meat” of grappling that everyone wants to jump straight into. Much like life however, sometimes a bit of setup/foreplay is necessary before getting down to business; the end goal however is always to finish (in a submission). I have broken down the submissions into their mechanism of action and how they inflict pain or immobilize the opponent on an anatomical basis. Note that for each submission there are multiple positions from which you can use them from but wherever in the positional hierarchy you lock in the submission, it will work the same way, target the same joint in the same fashion – which is why I believe this is a superior method of categorization. As a beginner, it is not important for you to learn a comprehensive list of submissions nor is it a good use of your time to find out every submission from a specific position of your choice [eg: do not go out and learn every submission from bottom guard]. Simply be aware of the potential ways someone can submit you and how they work. Tldr is in bold so only read the text if you’re very interested in how things work
a. Air Chokes: your throat is squished and you can’t breathe
Involves direct application of force into the larynx and trachea causing compression of the thyroid and cricoid cartilage preventing ventilation to the lungs. As neurological perfusion and ppO2 is maintained until there eventually is a V/Q mismatch, air chokes take a much longer time to kick in compared to their cousins because your body can rebreathe the remaining air trapped in the lungs. It is much more likely that you will submit your opponent directly from the pain of compressing the delicate structures of the larynx. Common techniques in this family are: Guillotine, Ezekiel, baseball bat, short choke, Peruvian necktie and Gogoplata/shin choke
b. Blood Chokes (strangles): blood can’t go into your brain and you pass out
Involves direct application of pressure bilaterally into the sides of the neck. More specifically, the external pressure collapses the common carotid arteries supplying oxygenated blood to the face and brain while simultaneously inhibiting venous return to the heart from the brain via the internal jugular veins. This results in a backpressure build up but more importantly prevents flow of freshly oxygenated blood to your brain (which as an organ has an immensely high metabolic rate burning through O2 like I do my T-shirts in nogi). This can be achieved directly using only your limbs (RNC, NS, punch) or indirectly by compressing the clavicle and anterior deltoid straight into the ipsilateral carotid (head and arm chokes). Techniques in this family are: rear naked choke (RNC), North South choke, Punch Choke and head & arm choke (Darce, anaconda, kata gatame, triangle)
c. Pressure Chokes: someone’s bodyweight is on your chest and you can’t breathe
Commonly and erroneously overlooked by a vast majority as a submission that only works on absolute newbies, pressure chokes involve posterior compression of the diaphragm directly or indirectly by applying stretching pressure to nerves in the celiac plexus. A signature move of judoka and catch wrestlers who learn to properly apply pins/osaekomi. Techniques are largely unnamed but googling “Josh Barnett vs Dean Lister” will demonstrate a prime example of such a choke. This is something you will inevitably experience yourself first hand in the first 5 classes (you will continue to experience it until you learn to get out of them)
d. Wrist locks: wrist is bent in different directions till it hurts
The holy grail of aikido, no one knows much about these dark arts but anatomically, largely involve hyperextension or hyperflexion of the wrist join and compression of the carpal bones.
e. Elbow locks: elbow is hyperextended, bent or wedged apart till it hurts
The bread and butter of modern judokas. Locks involving the elbow largely deal with hyperextending the joint, jamming the olecranon process right into its fossa (armbar). Alternatively and much more rarely, the collateral ligaments of the elbow can be overstretched and tear from a bent armlock (Americana). Additionally, the elbow joint itself can be pried apart by wedging a limb and using that as a fulcrum as force is applied to the distal portion of the forearm (bicep slicer). Common techniques in this category include: Armbars, straight armlocks, bicep slicers, Americana and kimura
f. Shoulder locks: popping the arm out of its socket
Traditionally one of the first techniques taught to white belts due to its ease of application. All shoulder attacks threaten an anterior-inferior dislocation of the humerus either directly (Americana) or indirectly via a lever (kimura & omoplata). Techniques include: Americana, kimura and omoplatas (and all of its plata variations – except for gogoplata)
Subpoints A-F are traditionally recognized techniques taught to all but now we begin to delve into the truly dark arts. Past this point, there is no going back
g. Ankle locks: foot is moved till it hurts
Mostly involve direct compression of the calcaneal/Achilles tendon (straight ankle) but downward pressure on the foot while the distal tibia is immobilized will eventually cause a dislocation of the talocrual joint. Alternatively, the foot can be inwardly rotated to stretch and lockout the easily torn ATFL (toe-hold). The 2 techniques in this family are the straight ankle lock and toe-hold
h. Knee locks: knee is directly hyperextended or indirectly twisted till it hurts
Classically involves hyperextending the knee joint (kneebar) but can also involve attacking the collateral ligaments of the knee indirectly by using the foot as a lever (heel hook and toe-hold). Wedging and prying apart the knee joint itself is also possible with compression locks. Techniques: kneebar, heel hook, toe-hold and calf slicer
i. Crotch/Hip locks: literally spreading their legs
Perhaps the most rare but definitely the most hilarious of the submissions are crotch/hip locks. Forcing apart the hip adductors itself apart is one method but another would be catching and prying down on the feet of a locked closed guard. Techniques: banana split, electric chair and butterfly catch of closed guard
j. Cervical locks: head is hyperflexed till your neck hurts
Also known as the infamous but very common neck crank (often heard as “bro that wasn’t a choke it was like a crank” – as if that discounts the validity of the move) this involves hypermobilization of the cervical spine. Rarely trained except by the dark wizards of 10th planet, neck cranks are almost as blasphemous as heel hooks in IBJJF circles. Techniques involve: can opener, mounted figure four crank, face crank, full nelson, reverse crucifix, crucifix
k. Spinal locks: body is twisted till your spine hurts
Works by over-rotation or hyper-extension of the lumbar or thoracic spine. Techniques: twister and boston crab

2019.11.03 00:54 maruwamarumaru How to find the source for a piece of fan art

Here's a guide to sourcing fan art with reverse image searching.
WARNING: search results can lead to NSFW images or websites. Most boorus/imageboards host NSFW images. Avoid Gelbooru, Sankaku Channel and Anime-Pictures, they have very questionable ads and/or policies. You have been warned.
A. Using SauceNAO: Click advanced options and paste the image link to the URL field. The links to sources are kinda all over the place, but for Pixiv click the ID and for boorus click the icons to the right.
B. Using iqdb: Drag-and-drop the image or paste the image link there. Once you have opened the image post, you can view the full sized image by clicking the Size field. You can also find the artist via the Artist tag or Source field. I used Danbooru's metadata field names here, other boorus may use different names.
C. Using Google image search: As previously, drag-and-drop the image or paste the image link. Next, click the All sizes or Large link next to the thumbnail. Look for either websites used by artists, such as Pixiv or Twitter, or for boorus.
D. Using TinEye: Nothing special here. If there are lots of hits, you can change the sorting criterion.
E. Using trace.moe (formerly known as whatanime.ga): Drop an anime frame here and it'll try find the anime, episode and timestamp. Doesn't work for fanart.
P.S. others are probably interested in seeing the original picture and artist too, so help everyone out and link the artist's Pixiv/Twitter post.
I originally posted this guide in the comments here.

2019.08.05 01:03 Ben__Harlan Watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime 10 years after i started it as a personal redemption

10 years ago i was a total jerk unkowing i was a total jerk. I had a group of friends from a now defunct gaming forum and a staple of that group and forum is that the Haruhi Suzumiya anime series was known by most of the otakus that visited the site and friends in that closed group. Shitposting about how cute the girls were, gifs and Mikuru Beams... I understood that something had that series to be popular outside the usuals Naruto, Bleach and One Piece. But whenever i asked why is popular and people liked nobody gave me right answers. At best it was "It feel like something malnacholic"... As if that was a logical answer. But something said that i needed to watch it.
Since my usual vacations with family are going to my grandparent's house in a lost village town, i packed the whole first subbed season in a DVD. I was aware that there was a broadcast and chronological order, but i didn't care and watched at best two episodes. I hardly remembered anything about that: Yuki Nagato flying around in the witch costume and Haruhi changing hairs. I was so displeased with the series that i had constant bad feelings about it, like a pure hate, specially to the protagonist even i unashamedly searched for R34. Between Haruhi Suzumiya and how i found K-On! extremely boring, I started a season of disgust with Kyoto Animation. Remember, I was a jerkass by that time.
Haruhi Suzumiya never ever was a conversation point in my group of friends which quietly and slowly dissolved. We all grew up and wet our ways. All the friends i had in that group, i stopped talking to them because i felt conversations with them were impossible or by my own jerkassery. I kinda liked the song God Knows in spite being so associated with Haruhi and those Aya Hirano scandals which Sankaku Complex couldn't stop posting about.
Someday, i stopped watching anime whatsoever and reading manga. i wasn't attracted to those new series. A feeling of lazyness and uninteres made me watch mainly what netflix spoonfed me with dubs and only kept up with the JoJo's manga and eventual Yotsuba chapter at best and the eventual movie that a lot of people liked. Then i started discovering youtube anime channels like Ember, Gigguk and Digibro that started reigniting my willingnesds to watch anime. But not like most of my actual friends that have a list of things to watch and stick to it to have a cute My Anime List account. Heck, you watch my MAL account and by today it has only 35 days and most of it is because of shows i watched as a kid regularly.
But last year i watched in Netflix Violet Evergarden which became one of my all time favs on how can they portray emotional words into animation and storytelling. The ending didn't click with me much but i found it correct. I said for myself "Welp, this excuses KyoAni for Haruhi and K-On!". I knew it was a great place to work, all those opportunities for women and not externalizing animators so the can have them in house and keep them better and so develop their potential, and it showed with how great Violet Evergarden looked of the subtlety of A Silent Voice. KyoAni stopped being in "my list", and while i didn't like most of their works i can say they rarely have done anything toxic like overusing fanservice for wankers (except Phantom World but that one is not canon in KyoAni's timeline) or going to the most mainstream and common denominator to get a series done. I ended up respecting KyoAni the more i knew about them.
Then the arson attack. For a studio i hated for a part of my life and then turned into respect on how they worked, i was shocked. One of the most successfull studios that didn't do anything bad, and treated their employees like human being, that they adapted things other studios would hesitate like those novels about a goddess that didn't knew she was a goddess. I recalled that i still had an appointment with Haruhi Suzumiya after years of hating her, reading about the Endless Eight and seeing how well regarded The Dissapearance was. I thought that finally watching the series wanting to watch it for reals instead of just to understand why that girl with yellow ribbons was loved would be a great way to honor KyoAni because if not of that series, i think they wouldn't be so successful and know like today.
I wanted to watch Haruhi Suzumiya for the first time in ten years and not because of hate.
So i snagged the English dub because where i live Haruhi hasn't been licensed aside mangas and the novels, and started in the chronological order, so watching Haruhi change her hair everyday was a little flashback, but then i started realizing that a show based on novels would have a more depth... And i was grateful of giving the series a legit chance. When the weird things started happening they reminded me a little of Twin Peaks of making the mundane things as twisted as possible with some suspense, although this was diluted to be consumable by teens but without being condescending or talking them down. it still felt like a series that could get today's top spot in the seasonal ranking (like Bunnygirl sempai has) thanks to word of mouth and some anitubers saying "hey, this carp is good!!!".
I stand that the dub was really good and made Haruhi that bratty annoying and endearing character she is, and Kyon the cynical that wants a normal life that ends loving being around the weird shenanigans of Haruhi and company.
Also, I watched the whole Endless Eight, and i can understand people mad watching basically the same episode over stucture and over for two months even the different nimation and designs were palpable and showed a lot of the personality of the SoS Brigade. It all ended some nighs ago when i watched The Dissapearance, and was totally awed on how it portrayed all the emotions of loss, change, hope and despair the protagonists have and gave Yuki Nagato the development she needed. While i understand people wanting a Season 3, this felt like the perfect ending for the franchise in anime form at least. I laughed and get emotional about a series i hating years ago and i feel relived for watching it after ten years of giving it a 1 on MAL by only badly watching one or two episodes... Now o understand why most of my former friends loved it, and while watching it would not bring them back and surely they won't remember it, it helped me know them a little more of them and what the series meant to them.
Thank you KyoAni.

2018.03.25 12:44 demeteloaf Translation Status Update/Discussion - Mar 25

Previous Thread Next Thread
This is the weekly translation status update thread. Use this thread to discuss translation news, issues, titles you're looking forward to, etc.
Note: This is simply a mirror from 4chan's weekly thread on the /jp/ board. All credit goes to the user VNTS there. I'm simply copying and pasting for discussion sake here since some people can't access 4chan, or don't like arguing over how necessary it is to link actual mistakes from a translation before being allowed to declare it's a bad translation
If you see anything incorrect, let me know (preferably with a source) and i'll make a note of it.
Entries in Bold have had changes since last week
Italics denote my own corrections/additions to the 4chan thread

2017.05.31 09:58 Inari_rose What episode was that?

While scrolling through SankakuChannel I came across a clip of BNHA that I hadn't seen before.
Ochako and tsuyu were at the bottom of a pit, Ochako uses her quirk to float tsuyu out of the hole where tsu then lands in deku's arms.
Where is this clip from?

I'm part of some doujinshi and hentai communities, and there people use the term trap to refer don't only for trans girls, but for crossdress and androgynous boys. Even on some sites like. Sankaku channel or nhentai "trap" is a tag. They don't use the term with a negative meaning (there's even "trap appreciation " communities). On other hand, I see some people becoming upset with it.
How you girls see it? Is a offensive slang, or it have become something more ok to say in Internet culture?
