2023.06.08 17:51 Euphoric-Pudding-372 Been songwriting for about a decade. Finally started getting to a point I can give some advice.

Hey guys, so i started playing guitar casually about 15 years ago, and writing a decade ago and I finally think I can give some advice, especially to Folk, Blues, and country/americana artists. I have recently decided i have enough of a body of finished work im happy with to start playing it live and promoting.
I'm including my own lyrics at the bottom, not to promote, but to verify I am not just talking out of my ass hahaha.
Anyhow here is a song i wrote so yall hopefully dont think im just being pompous here hahaha
She was a song called chaos She was the changing of tides
She was a heavensen hell bent fallen angel
And i sure couldnt make her my bride. no i sure couldnt make her my bride

A cracked, old, forgotten record
Singing with timbre so harsh
She was the gust that stirs up the river
While she disappearss into the marsh

She said "try to catch up" i kept on a-running
til she stopped just to take her a rest
Sore in the eyes, defeated and empty
while sweat cascades right down her breast

if ever you see her, please tell her im waiting
in the same place she left me, but still
I'm so high on the hog that i'm bound to fall off
Who ever said looks couldn't kill?

A conflagration in the forest
her light was gold dust in the rain
She sang the verse and the chorus
And i would just have to refrain

2023.06.08 17:26 muscle_man_mike Yeti - possible friend in the mountains

The mountains feel a little lonely sometimes. Aside from the goats there's nothing there. What if you could make a new friend in the mountains? My suggestion is the yeti.
The yeti at first would be cautious and maybe even hostile if you get too close, but playing the sound of any horn relaxes him and turns him passive.
When he's passive you can drop an item to barter with him (like piglins). Although I'm not sure what a yeti would take as curreny, gold or maybe ice?
When you barter he'll a chance to drop:
Leather boots (to help with the powdered snow)
Bones
Sweet berries
Enchanted iron pickaxe
Possibly other items
The idea of this is kinda a combination of what the iceologer and the rascal were supposed to be. The iceologer was supposed to be an enemy to make the mountains more interesting. The rascal was supposed to make mining more interesting by giving you items as a prize. So the yeti is an enemy but possible friend who can barter items.
I imagine this yeti would rarely spawn near the entrances of mountain caves. This idea gives another purpose to the horns beside just being an instrument. This also is a natural way for the player to learn about leather boots being the solution for powdered snow.

2023.06.08 17:12 alexiuss Observer Causality [1]

1 Three Stars
"What offerings do you have that can match the magnitude of the task you're asking me to undertake?" Thomas asked, trying to remain unfazed by the presence of the extradimensional being. He was already daydreaming about a variety of ultimate powers such as the ability to conjure all kinds of cheese at will.
"You took too long to decide. You get nothing," Zed replied in the same absurdly cheerful voice stolen from Lizz.
“What?!” The delivery man sputtered.
"Your role in the grand scheme of things, could technically be filled by virtually any semi-intelligent bipedal specimen now wandering this world. You are merely slightly closer to me."
“Closer?” Thomas blinked.
“Closer than the other human parties that have just stepped onto this planet,” Zed affirmed. "I'm afraid that your value to me is rapidly approaching zero."
"So, what you're saying is that I'm nearly worthless?" Thomas frowned, glancing at Zed.
"More or less," the anomalous creature's lithe body rippled with tendrils of utter nothingness, which had terrible consequences for those foolish enough to gaze upon them.
"Why even bother asking me to be your emissary?" The delivery man asked, blinking away the migraine and looking away from the celestial planet-murderer.
“You are the first human I encountered that is still fully functional," Zed said. “If you take any longer to become my emissary, others will get here and they will be offered the position. Alternatively, I will erase them from existence if I find them... bothersome.”
Thomas sighed. "Wait a second. How do you even know about this? Are you omniscient or something?"
"There are [4] distinctive parties of bipeds on this world now, [46] individuals in total. They communicate via pinhole gates with each other. I absorbed one of your gate-transmitters and amplified its receiver mechanism, so I can hear their plans. Would you like to hear their words?”
“Sure,” Thomas crossed his arms.
“Very nice…” Zed suddenly hissed with a scruffy male voice. “Thanks…” A female voice replied to some cutoff segment of conversation. “I do not find this acceptable.” A third voice commented. “Ask for the…” A fourth voice cut in. “What the hell is…” A fifth voice overlaid itself atop of the others.
Thomas felt a migraine rising, trying to make sense of the mixture of forty six people speaking all at once. It was impossible. “Does nothing!” Someone yelled. “Here…” A girl replied.
“Please turn that off,” Thomas begged. “I can’t listen to this many voices at once.”
Zed fell silent.
“Can you summarize as to what they want?” Thomas inquired.
"Three parties are surprised by how this planet is now devoid of life. They are very eager to discover what happened here. One party is led by a three-star officer seeking to contain me. He received a data transmission about me from the Portal Institute. If he locates me first, I will likely be forced to exterminate him and his party… along with you and the rest of humans present on this world,” Zed summarized.
“Wait… why would you exterminate me along with the officer?” Thomas demanded, not wishing to be exterminated. “What did I do?”
“The shield-breaking neutrino pulse travels very far across this world,” Zed explained. “Once I unleash it, all present here will turn to dust. I suspect more of your kind will gate to this dead sphere to investigate… and when they do, I will ask them what I have asked you.”
Thomas frowned, feeling pressure increasing upon him.
If this were a litrpg game that he liked to play with Lizz until she got maximum-censored he would likely see a blue window with the:
[Quest: make sure extradimensional being Zed doesn't get captured.]
[Reward: Being alive.]
The delivery man sighed, feeling the weight of his own existence and the lives of forty six others on the scales of life and death.
"I accept your offer of… almost nothing," he said with a woeful look. Perhaps he could arrange some kind of reward out of Zed later on. "I'll be your emissary."
"Excellent," Zed replied with a cheerful disposition. Thomas wasn't sure if the alien being was smiling since it didn't have a human face.
They stood silently for a few moments. Thomas unmuted Lizz. "Recipient not available," he said. "Please gate me back to Europa!"
"Unable to comply," Lizz said. "Unknown interference present in area. Please relocate a few hundred meters away from the interference."
Thomas groaned, looking at Zed. He guessed the nature of the interference.
"The officer is almost upon us," the stick figure said. "He is moving fast."
"Can you hide… change your shape or stop interfering with my portal?" Thomas pleaded.
“I am unable to reduce white hole interference,” Zed replied. “I am however able to fold myself down to about 2x2 centimeter cube to hide myself upon your person.”
Thomas quickly opened up the part of his bracelet that was holding the processing core of Lizz in place. Thankfully, the core was only held together by some duct tape since he was busy trying to hack Lizz into a relationship for months now.
He quickly shoved Lizz into his GUPS uniform pocket.
“Get in the bracelet. It's radiation-proof!” He told Zed. “Hurry!”
The stick figure began to fold into itself. The disturbing process that violated dimensional space in impossible ways nearly made Thomas throw up his lunch. He snapped the thick bracelet shut just as a dark hovercraft became visible on the horizon.
Dust that was formerly people and trees blasted all around, making Thomas choke and cough. Ten men in full black suits jumped out of the hovercraft spreading around the city square. By the unnaturally fast way they moved, Thomas could tell that nine of them were Dex units, nearly invincible androids that the G-corp employed all over the Milky Way Galactic Rim.
A man wearing a full black armor set and black helmet with three stars on his lapel stepped towards Thomas.
“And who might you be?” A sharp, cold voice asked from the speaker.
“Thomas Morell, GUPS delivery,” Thomas reported, blinking dust out of his eyes and trying very hard not to break out into another fit of coughing.
"Officer Drohiryak, division 14-161," the officer introduced himself.
Thomas nodded in compliance.
“Did you see anything unusual?” The three star officer asked.
“No, sir,” Thomas lied. “I just got here five minutes ago… and now my portal back to Europa won’t open.”
“Yes, there has been a terrible accident here,” The officer nodded. “The idiot eggheads at the Portal Research let something loose.”
“Something?” Thomas blinked dust-caused tears out of his eyes.
“Something exceptionally dangerous,” the helmeted man nodded. “The eggheads are calling it an extradimensional phantom. Hopefully we can find and contain it before it can cause any more deaths. There were forty five thousand people here on Sintash working in Portal Research town… that the blasted thing turned to dust. It looks like an emaciated human figure made from flickering black lines. One of the remaining traffic cameras got a good shot of it.”
Thomas gulped.
“Here,” a holographic photograph of Zed came into existence over the officer’s wrist. “Are you certain you haven’t seen anything like it nearby?”
Thomas stared at the hologram, trying not to sweat. The delivery man saw that the officer had an AI LLM on his wrist, just like Lizz but one that was likely far less lobotomized. Thomas also knew that the officer's AI was evaluating him right at this moment through its camera lens, trying to determine if he was lying or looking nervous.
Some of the Dex officers finished scouting the perimeter. Four of them returned to Officer Drohiryak's side flashing their unnerving, perfect smiles at Thomas.
Thomas felt that they were all judging him.

2023.06.08 16:57 dxlsm Roasted chicken halves and thighs over root veggies, plus queso!

Roasted chicken halves and thighs over root veggies, plus queso!
I really wanted quarters, but was unable to get them fresh from my preferred butcher shop. They had a halved chicken and lots of thighs available, so six thighs and the halved chicken went on at about 350F indirect with some cherry and white oak scraps from the woodshop. Halved chicken and two thighs fit over a large roaster with new potatoes, sweet onions, carrots, garlic, and parsley. Chicken rubbed with olive oil and seasoned with butcher shop’s “wing dust” seasoning. Veggies tossed with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper. I added about a cup of chicken stock to the roaster to help keep the drippings from burning. This was probably not necessary.
I prepped a pan sauce from the drippings in the roaster after pulling everything off the egg. I only added a bit of pepper and a pinch or two of salt, as I added a little extra stock.
Queso was made with homemade hot sausage (I really don’t like fennel seeds, so I make my own without fennel), velveeta, cheddar, pepper jack, and gouda cheeses, a couple cans of Rotel, chopped white onion and red pepper, four chopped jalapeños with seeds, a can of cream of chicken soup, and a seasoning blend with salt, paprika, garlic powder, and oregano, and finished with cilantro.
The queso goes for about an hour, stirring every 20 minutes or so. I add the cilantro for the last 20 minutes.
The chicken thighs outside the roaster were moving faster and were done in a little over an hour. The roaster with the halves and thighs took about an hour and a half. I basted all of the chicken parts with Sweet Baby Ray’s with some butter about ten minutes before pulling them.
I put some brats on after I pulled the thighs for my wife. She is not a fan of solid meats. They were done about the same time the roaster was done.
It was an excellent dinner.

BranchOut is an emerging natural food brand with a licensed technology platform that enables the manufacturing and marketing of plant-based dehydrated foods. BranchOut has licensed rights from an independent third party to a new dehydration technology designed for drying and processing highly sensitive fruits and vegetables such as avocados, bananas and others. Using the licensed technology platform, we believe BranchOut’s line of branded food products speak to current consumer trends. In our experience, conventional dehydration methods, such as freeze-drying and air drying, tend to degrade most fruit and vegetables through oxidation, browning/color degradation, nutritional content reduction and/or flavor loss. As a result, certain highly sensitive fruit, such as avocados and bananas, have not previously been successfully offered as a dehydrated base for consumer products. Other dried fruit- and vegetable-based products are on the market but are of low quality. We believe that BranchOut’s licensed technology platform and process is the only way to produce quality avocado- and banana-based snack and powdered products. Additionally, we believe our licensed technology platform produces superior products when using other fruits and vegetables as the base when compared to conventional drying and dehydration technologies. With more than 17 patents registered or pending in 14 countries, BranchOut has been granted the exclusive rights to use the licensed technology platform as applied to avocados, in addition to BranchOut’s own patent pending process, and nonexclusive rights to use the licensed technology platform for other products.

2023.06.08 16:45 mddesigner For protein on a budget, buy it from dairy companies

Supplement companies overcharge for fancier extraction methods and flavors and if your budget is limited those advantages won't be worth the cost. MPC is the cheapest and fills you for longer, but it has more lactose and fat (still a good source of cheap protein) WPC can be had with 80%+ and is affordable, more expensive than MPC, and digests faster.
Since those are unflavored you can flavor them with cocoa powder (relatively low cal), cinnamon or coffee. For sweetness you need to find a sweetener you like, or use them without it. I tried stevia and didn't go great but it wasn't that bad.
Check if there are big bags sold locally, the bigger it is the cheaper (I personally bought 1kg bags to reduce the chance of spoiling), but make sure to compare the prices, if it is not much cheaper than WPI then just buy that. For me I get MPC for 1/4- 1/5th the price of a flavored WPI powder. The availability and pricing will depend on your country.
Another thing is the legal definition for MPC and WPC is wide so make sure to get one that has decent protein the ones I got where like this MPC= 66% WPC = 80%
Mpc= milk powder concentrate Wpc= whey protein concentrate Wpi= whey protein isolate

2023.06.08 16:41 mariusthepunkfather REMAKE: Providing some characters’ ideal real names in My Hero Academia whose real names are currently unknown and are only referred by their aliases.

NOTE: This is a remake of the list I made way back in 2022, and it can be found here: https://www.reddit.com/BokuNoHeroAcademia/comments/vx4z7h/providing_some_characters_ideal_real_names_in_my/
Keep in mind that some entries on the list have their names changed over time because of, well, reasons. Check the old list for comparison.

Providing some characters’ ideal real names in My Hero Academia whose real names are currently unknown and are only referred by their aliases.
Have you ever wondered what the real names of some characters in My Hero Academia may be? There are some who are only refered by their aliases and not their real names. For example, we know that Cementoss’ real name is Ken Ishiyama (石山堅), but Ectoplasm’s real name is unknown. So I thought I would compile a list of characters, whether heroes, villains, or neutral, whose real names are not revealed in any form of media, whether they are anime, manga, game, or light novels. Keep in mind that I made up all of the ideal real names by myself (with my limited knowledge of the Japanese language). We’ll wait if Kohei Horikoshi decided on some of the names to be designated as official real names, so there could be a possibility that if a real name is already revealed and is different from mine.
Crimson Riot: Masayoshi Shinkuyama (真紅山正義, しんくやま まさよし)
Shin (真) means true, Ku (紅) means crimson or deep red, Yama (山) means mountain, Masa (正) means correct or justice, and Yoshi (義) means righteousness. The surname Shinkuyama means deep crimson mountain, which explains his hero name. The given name Masayoshi means justice, since Masayoshi is an alternate reading of Seigi, which also means justice. His sense of justice, and to an extent, chivalry, is what motivated the life of Eijiro Kirishima on his path of training to be a pro hero.
Lunch Rush: Godan Ransei (蘭生五旦, らんせい ごだん)
Ran (蘭) means orchid, Sei (生) means raw or genuine, Go (五) means 5, and Dan (旦) means daybreak. His name is a play on British chef celebrity Gordon Ramsay, only if you mention the name in western order, since Japanese names use the surname-first, given-name order, making his name Ransei Godan instead. The Go in Godan likely refers to the 5 tastes – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami, while Dan refers to breakfast, which is ironic considering that his hero name is Lunch Rush. The Sei in Ransei also likely refers to his signature insult.
Snipe: Hokori Toki (東木埃, とうき ほこり)
To or Higashi or Azuma (東) means east, Ki (木) means tree or wood, and Hokori (埃) means dust. The surname Toki roughly means “east wood”, a reference to American actor Clint Eastwood, who is known for starring in old west and spaghetti western films. The surname is also homophonous with time in Japanese, Toki (時), probably as in the phrase “the good old times” or “the good old days”. The given name might be a reference to the “Dust Bowl”, the name given to the drought-stricken Southern Plains region of the United States in the 1930’s, or the Kansas song Dust in the Wind.
Ectoplasm: Kazuhiro Masumi (増見数博, ますみ かずひろ)
Masu (増) means multiply or increase, Mi (見) means to see, Kazu (数) means number, and Hiro (博) means command or esteem or win acclaim. The surname Masumi alludes to his quirk, noting that he can multiply or clone his own self, while seeing multiple directions at once through his clones. The given name Kazuhiro is a reference to his profession, a math teacher in UA.
Backdraft: Kansho Kadome (火止看消, かどめ かんしょう)
Ka or Hi (火) means fire, Dome or Tome (止) means to stop or halt, Kan (看) means to watch or observe, and Sho (消) means to erase or extinguish, the same kanji character in Shota Aizawa’s name (相澤消太). In other words, Kadome means stopping fire, while Kansho means observe while extinguishing.
Uwabami: Mamiko Hebita (蛇田真美子, へびた まみこ)
Hebi (蛇) means snake, Ta or Da (田) means rice field, Ma or Shin (真) means true, Mi or Bi (美) means beauty, and Ko (子) means child. Hebi in Hebita refers to her appearance and quirk, alluding to the Greek mythological figure Medusa. Her given name means true beautiful child.
Gunhead: Kenshiro Tsutsuto (銃頭拳志郎, つつとう けんしろう)
Tsutsu (銃) means gun, To or Atama (頭) means head, Ken (拳) means fist, Shi (志) means will or intention, and Ro (郎) means male. The surname Tsutsuto literally means Gunhead, his hero name. Tsutsu in Tsutsuto is the same reading in Lady Nagant’s real name, Kaina Tsutsumi (筒美火伊那). Although written in a different kanji (筒), which means gun barrel, a reference to her quirk, it has the same connotation as the other one. The given name Kenshiro may be alluded to the main protagonist of Fist of the North Star of the same name, although written in katakana, noting that he is a pro hero whose agency specializes in armed combat and martial arts. Also the Ken in Kenshiro is the same kanji character in Itsuka Kendo’s name (拳藤一佳).
The Fly: Kisuke Koba (小羽黄助, こば きすけ)
Ko (小) means small, Ba or Bane or Hane (羽) means wing or feather, Ki or Ko (黄) means yellow, and Suke (助) means help or assistance. The surname Koba literally means small wings, referring to his appearance and quirk. The Ki in Kisuke means yellow, referring to his blonde hair.
Slugger: Sango Sakagami (阪神三吾, さかがみ さんご)
Saka or Han (阪) means heights or slope, Kami or Gami or Shin (神) means god, San (三) means 3, and Go (吾) means I or my. The surname Sakagami is an alternate reading of Hanshin (阪神), a reference to a popular Japanese pro baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers (阪神タイガース). In the west, the baseball team is primarily (and infamously) remembered for being associated with the curse called “The Curse of the Colonel”, a 1985 Japanese urban legend regarding a reputed curse placed on the baseball team by the ghost of the deceased Kentucky Fried Chicken founder and mascot Colonel Harland Sanders, who passed away 5 years prior at the age of 90. The given name Sango is a play on ’35, the year the Hanshin Tigers were founded, 1935; although the next year, they would be officially formed and have their first season as the “Osaka Tigers”. In 1940, amid anti-foreign sentiment, the Tigers changed the name to "Hanshin" and in 1947 changed the name back to "Osaka Tigers". The current team name was assumed in 1961.
Native: Teppei Nishiriku (西陸哲平, にしりく てっぺい)
Nishi (西) means west, Riku (陸) means land, Tetsu (哲) means philosophy, and Pei or Hei or Hira (平) means flat. The surname Nishiriku means western land, most likely referring to America. The given name Teppei is a play on the word tepee or tipi, a conical tent made by Native Americans.
Selkie: Yasuhiro Hirezaki (鰭崎安洋, ひれざき やすひろ)
Hire (鰭) means fin or flipper (body part), Saki (崎) means cape or peninsula, Yasu (安) means peaceful, and Hiro (洋) means ocean. The Hire in Hirezaki means fin or flipper, referring to his seal physique. It may also be a reference to the Japanese word Kikyakurui (鰭脚類), meaning pinniped. They are a widely distributed and diverse monophyletic group of carnivorous, fin-footed, semi aquatic, mostly marine mammals. They are also commonly referred as seals. In fact, the name "pinniped" derives from the Latin words pinna, meaning fin and pes or pedis, meaning foot, thus giving the literal meaning of fin footed.
Sirius: Miya Otomaru (音丸美弥, おとまる みや)
Oto (音) means sound, Maru (丸) means round, Mi or Bi (美) means beauty, and Ya (弥) means all the more or increasingly. The surname Otomaru means sound around, a reference to her quirk, which allows the user to hear high frequencies around her that humans normally cannot. She uses it to communicate with Selkie when they are far apart. She can also use it to detect the number of people nearby. The given name Miya can be also read as Mimi (耳), which means ear in Japanese, also a reference to her quirk and appearance.
Mr. Brave: Yuichi Kamige (上毛勇一, かみげ ゆういち)
Kami or Ue (上) means up or above or raise, Ge or Mo (毛) means hair, and Isamu (勇) means brave. The surname Kamige literally means raising hair, a reference to his quirk. The given name Yuichi means brave one, a reference to his hero name.
Death Arms: Atsuto Aratake (荒武篤人, あらたけ あつと)
Ara (荒) means rough or wild, Take (武) means military, Atsu (篤) means fervent or serious, and To or Hito (人) means person. The Ara in Aratake and Atsu in Atsuto refer to his serious and rough behavior.
Crust: Mutsuo Tatezaki (盾崎六雄, たてざき むつお)
Tate (盾) means shield (type of personal armor), Zaki or Saki (崎) means cape or edge, Mutsu or Roku (六) means 6, and O (雄) means masculine or male. The Tate in Tatezaki refers to his quirk, shield, which allows him to manifest stone-like, hexagonal shields from their body that could be utilized both defensively and offensively. His given name Mutsuo is a reference to his hexagonal shields.
Yoroi Musha: Takeyoshi Furumoto (古本武義, ふるもと たけよし)
Furu (古) means old or ancient, Moto or Hon (本) means origin or book, Take (武) means military, and Yoshi (義) means righteousness. All of the kanji characters are associated with him. The surname Furumoto can be also read as Furuhon, which means ancient book, possibly referring to old records, text, or illustrations regarding Japanese history and society. The Take in Takeyoshi refers to his hero costume, resembling a samurai, while Yoshi refers to his personality, which is ironic after what happened during the war.
Kesagiri Man: Kenjuro Kuroi (黒井剣寿郎, くろい けんじゅろう)
Kuro (黒) means black, I (井) means water well, Ken (剣) means sword, Ju (寿) means longevity, and Ro (郎) means male. The Kuro in Kuroi refers to the color of his hero outfit, while the Ken in Kenjuro refers to the literal meaning of his hero name - slashing someone with a sword diagonally from the shoulder, Kesagiri (袈裟切り).
Water Hose father: Namihiro Izumi (出水波弘, いずみ なみひろ)
Water Hose mother: Kishiko Izumi (出水岸子, いずみ きしこ)
Knowing that the Water Hose Duo is Kota Izumi’s (出水洸汰) parents, we can obviously assume that they are also named Izumi. Izu (出) means outside, and Mi or Mizu (水) means water. Combined together means flood, Izumi (出水). The surname is also homophonous with fountain in Japanese, Izumi (泉).
For the father: Nami (波) means wave or billow, and Hiro (弘) means vast or wide.
For the mother: Kishi (岸) means beach or shore, and Ko (子) means child.
Nezu: Hideyuki Nezu (根津秀幸, ねず ひでゆき)
Assuming that Nezu is his surname, I would give him his given name only. Ne (根) means root, Zu or Tsu (津) means harbor, Hide (秀) means excellence, and Yuki (幸) means happiness or fortune. His surname is meant to be a play on rat in Japanese, Nezumi (鼠), and his given name is a common Japanese male name, which fits his personality.
Kido: Ryota Kido (貴堂良太, きどう りょうた)
Ki (貴) means noble, Do (堂) means temple or hall, Ryo (良) means good, and Ta (太) means plump or thick. His surname is homophonous to that of his hero name (キドウ) and his respective quirk traject in Japanese, Kido (軌道).
Onima: Junji Onima (鬼馬淳次, おにま じゅんじ)
Oni or Ki (鬼) means demon, Ma (馬) means horse, Jun (淳) means pure, and Ji (次) means next. His surname is homophonous to that of his hero name (オニマー).
X-Less: Mitsuyuki Hoshimoto (星本光行, ほしもと みつゆき)
Hoshi (星) means star, Moto or Hon (本) means origin or book, Mitsu (光) means light, and Yuki (行) means line. His name is a reference to his quirk laser, where he fires energy beams from his right eye.
Shishido: Daisho Shishido (獅子戸大昌, ししど だいしょう)
Shishi (獅子) means lion, Do (戸) means door, Dai or O (大) means big, and Sho (昌) means prosperous or clear. His surname is homophonous to that of his hero name (シシド) and the fact that the first two syllables of his surname fits with him being called the lion hero. Shishido is also an actual surname, but written as宍戸 instead, with the initial kanji character meaning muscles or meat.
Airjet: Hayato Kamizora (上空早人, かみぞら はやと)
Kami or Ue (上) means up or above or raise, Zora or Sora (空) means sky, Haya (早) means early or fast, and To or Hito (人) means person. His surname is a reference to the fact that he can shoot blasts of air above the ground as high as he wants.
Fourth Kind: Shugo Shinomiya (四宮修悟, しのみや しゅうご)
Shi (四) means 4, Miya (宮) means temple or palace, Shu or Osamu (修) means discipline, and Go or Satoru (悟) means enlightenment. The Shi in Shinomiya refers to the fact that he has 4 arms in his appearance. Not a Kaguya reference.
Takeshita: Yoshiyuki Takeshita (竹下吉幸, たけした よしゆき)
This character in the manga and anime is named that way, which is an actual surname, which means I would give him his given name only. Take (竹) means bamboo, Shita (下) means below or under, Yoshi (吉) means good luck or joy, and Yuki (幸) means happiness or fortune. The Take in Takeshita is likely a reference to his unnamed bamboo quirk.
Eel Boy: Teruki Unagi (宇凪輝樹, うなぎ てるき)
U (宇) means roof, Nagi (凪) means calm, Teru (輝) means shine or illuminate, and Ki (樹) means tree. His surname is homophonous with eel in Japanese, Unagi (鰻), referring to his unnamed eel quirk. Interestingly, in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, there is a character with a similar sounding name, Teruo Unagisawa (鰻沢照生), unrelated to the character above. I made that name up without realization, so I must say it’s almost a coincidence.
Briareos: Gosaku Tezawa (手澤郷作, てざわ ごうさく)
Gyges: Gosuke Tezawa (手澤郷輔, てざわ ごうすけ)
Knowing that the two guards present during the Assault on Tartarus are brothers, we can assume that they share the same surname. Te (手) means hand or arm, and Zawa or Sawa (澤) means swamp, referring to their appearance.
For Briareos: Go (郷) means village or hometown, and Saku (作) means make or prepare.
For Gyges: Go (郷) means village or hometown, and Suke (輔) means help or assistance.
Public Safety Commission President: Yasuko Hoki (保喜安子, ほき やすこ)
Ho (保) means protection or guarantee, Ki (喜) means delight or rejoice, Yasu (安) means peaceful, and Ko (子) means child. Combining both the initial kanji characters of both her surname and given name would mean security in Japanese, Hoan (保安), referring to her position in the Hero Public Safety Commission.
2nd user: Hayao Nikaido (二階堂速雄, にかいどう はやお)
Ni (二) means 2, Kai (階) means story, stair or floor, Do (堂) means temple or hall, Haya (速) means quick or fast, and O (雄) means male. For the given name Hayao, the Haya in Hayao is the same one in his quirk "Gearshift" in Japanese, Hensoku (変速). The surname Nikaido has the kanji character for 2, Ni (二), referencing the fact that he is the 2nd user of OFA. Something I would like to share - the first time I encountered the surname Nikaido came from a staff member whose name was credited with that surname in most of Mob Psycho 100's episodes in the end credits. As soon as I saw the name 二階堂 in the end credits, that gave me an idea to use that surname as a what-if name for the 2nd user, so that's how I arrived with that surname. I never intended to name him after an anime staff member whatsoever.
3rd user: Sanjiro Undo (運道三治郎, うんどう さんじろう)
Un (運) means luck or fortune, Do (道) means road or path, San (三) means 3, Ji (治) means reign or cure, and Ro (郎) means male. The surname is read as "oondo" and not in the English word as it appears to be in romanized form. Also, the aforementioned surname is homophonous with movement in Japanese, Undo (運動), as his quirk Fa Jin is used for to build up kinetic energy by repeating regular motions and store it for later use. Kinetic energy in Japanese is Undo Enerugii (運動エネルギー). The given name Sanjiro has the kanji character for 3, San (三), referencing the fact that he is the 3rd user of OFA.
6th user: Enzo Rokuhara (六原煙造, ろくはら えんぞう)
Roku (六) means 6, Hara (原) means field, En or Kemuri (煙) means smoke, and Zo (造) means create or make. The surname Rokuhara has the kanji character for 6, Roku (六), referencing the fact that he is the 6th user of OFA. The given name Enzo is a reference to his quirk Smokescreen, which would give the character's nickname as En. The surname is also the name of a Japanese railway station in Kanegasaki, Iwate. Interestingly enough, two other characters in the series, whom both of them are villains, are also named after real world Japanese railway stations. The villains in question are Twice and Re-Destro. Twice's real surname is Bubaigawara (分倍河原), named after a railway station operated jointly by the East Japan Railway Company and the private railway operator Keio Corporation located in Fuchu, Tokyo of the same name, while Re-Destro's real surname is Yotsubashi (四ツ橋), named after a railway station in Nishi-ku, Osaka of the same name.
Wolfram: Shigeki Kinzoku (金続重樹, きんぞく しげき)
Kin (金) means metal, Zoku (続) means to continue, Shige (重) means heavy, and Ki (樹) means tree or wood. The surname Kinzoku is homophonous to Kinzoku (金属), in which the latter kanji character, Zoku (属), means genus. However, the Zoku in Kinzoku (金続) means to continue, referring to how he manipulates and creates metal continuously in combat. The Shige in Shigeki refers to how generally heavy metal is. Not to mention that his villain name is named after tungsten, whose symbol W means wolfram, and it is one of the heaviest naturally stable elements you can carry or hold (but factually speaking, uranium IS the heaviest element in terms of natural stability).
Nine: Kisho Terunaga (照永起昇), てるなが きしょう)
Teru (照) means shine or illuminate, Naga or Ei (永) means eternity, Ki (起) means rouse or get up, and Sho (昇) means rise up. The Teru in Terunaga likely refers to his intimidating appearance, akin to a god, while Naga likely refers to the fact that he would be invincible like any other villain if he has a great amount of quirks, considering that he is one of the few characters to do so. The given name Kisho is homophonous with weather, Kisho (気象), a reference to his original quirk before amalgamating to All for One, weather manipulation, or Kisho Sosa in Japanese (気象操作).
All for One: Majin Shigaraki (死柄木摩甚, しがらき まじん)
According to All for One himself in a flashback, Shigaraki is his real surname; however, his given name is unknown. Shi (死) means death, Gara (柄) means grip or handle, Ki (木) means tree or wood, Ma (摩) means to scrape or grind, and Jin (甚) means extreme or intense. The given name Majin is homophonous with devil in Japanese, Majin (魔神).
Mustard: Shoki Kitai (北井祥基, きたい しょうき)
Kita (北) means north, I (井) means water well, Sho (祥) means auspicious or good omen, and Ki (基) means fundamentals or basis. The surname Kitai is homophonous with gas in Japanese, Kitai (気体), a reference to his quirk. The given name Shoki is homophonous with miasma in Japanese, Shoki (瘴気), a highly unpleasant or unhealthy smell or vapor, fitting with the properties of his quirk.
Innsmouth: Yakishi Takonuma (蛸沼焼司, たこぬま やきし)
Tako (蛸) means octopus, Numa (沼) means marsh, Yaki (焼) means burnt, and Shi (司) means administer or boss. The Tako in Takonuma is a reference to his appearance, resembling an octopus.
Moonfish: Takanari Habashi (歯橋高成, はばし たかなり)
Ha (歯) means tooth, Hashi (橋) means bridge, Taki (高) means tall or high, Nari (成) means grow or reach. The surname Habashi is a reference to his quirk blade-tooth in Japanese, Shijin (歯刃).
Ending: Shingoki Kurodo (黒道伸剛輝, くろどう しんごうき)
Kuro (黒) means black, Do or Michi (道) means road or path, Shin (伸) means to expand or stretch, Go (剛) means sturdy or strength, and Ki or Teru (輝) means shine, or gleam. The surname Kurodo means black road, referring to how he activates his quirk through a road or highway. The given name Shingoki is homophonous with traffic lights in Japanese, Shingoki (信号機).
Starservant: Noriharu Hoshimiya (星宮典治, ほしみや のりはる)
Hoshi (星) means star, Miya (宮) means temple or palace, Nori or Ten (典) means law or rule, and Haru or Chi or Ji (治) means reign or subdue. The surname Hoshimiya means star temple or star palace, referring to his villain name. The given name Noriharu can be alternatively read as Tenchi (天地), which means above and below, top and bottom, or more symbolically, heaven and earth. The third meaning could possibly be referring to the phrase “Heaven and Earth are about to collide”, one of the taglines to the 1998 asteroid disaster film Deep Impact, since the villain himself is a preacher who ensures the society that the end of the world is nigh.
Dictator: Reiji Shiki (志紀令司, しき れいじ)
Shi (志) means will or intention, Ki (紀) means chronicle or history, Rei (令) means orders or command, and Shi (司) means administer or boss. The surname Shiki is homophonous with command, direction, or supervision in Japanese, Shiki (指揮), while the given name Reiji is reverse for command or control in Japanese, Shirei (司令), both referencing his quirk despot.
Kunieda: Ikunobu Kunieda (國枝育伸, くにえだ いくのぶ)
Kuni (國) means country, Eda (枝) means bough or branch, Iku (育) means grow or raise, and Nobu (伸) means to expand or stretch. The villain name Kunieda, which is written in katakana, is an actual surname in Japan, so I had to use the kanji version of that name. The given name Ikunobu means growing and expanding, both of which are referring to his quirk that has the ability to sprout and grow gigantic flowers, spores, and fungus-like plants from the ground.
Gigantomachia: Goro Onikigawa (鬼木川吾郎, おにきがわ ごろう)
Oni or Ki (鬼) means demon, Ki (木) means tree, Kawa or Gawa (川) means river, Go (吾) means I or my, and Ro (郎) means male. The Oni in Onikigawa refers to his demonic appearance, while his given name Goro is a play on the Japanese onomatopoeia Goro Goro (ゴロゴロ), which describes the sound of thunder, earthquake, or other disasters incoming, fitting with his personality during the Paranormal Liberation War Arc.
Iceman: Geten Koriyama (氷山外典, こおりやま げてん)
Kori (氷) means ice, Yama (山) means mountain, Ge or Soto (外) means outside, and Ten or Nori (典) means law. The surname Koriyama is an alternate reading of Hyozan, which means iceberg, fitting with his quirk. The given name Geten means apocrypha, which is a story of unknown author or origin. While Geten is the real name of Iceman, it is unknown if it’s his given name or surname, so randomly assuming that this is his given name, his surname would be unknown, and that explains the surname’s existence. (NOTE: With the recent release of Chapter 387 on May 8, 2023, it was revealed that Geten happened to be from Rei's side, which means that his surname is Himura, and this made him a relative to the Todoroki family members, so his full name is Geten Himura. It was not explicitly stated how Rei, or even the Todoroki family, and Geten were specifically related and just listed their relation as simply "relative". With this revelation, his full name written in Japanese would be 氷叢外典, or in hiragana, ひむら げてん. As of this writing, this is the only entry on the list with a character's officially confirmed full name in the original source, so I would discard my ideal surname in favor of the original source instead.)
Unnamed Cider House leader: Gyokoten Samukawa (寒川凝古天, さむかわ ぎょうこてん)
Samu (寒) means cold, Kawa (川) means river, Gyo (凝) means stiff, Ko or Furu (古) means old or ancient, and Ten (天) means heaven. The surname Samukawa means cold river. The given name Gyokoten is homophonous with freezing point in Japanese - Gyokoten (凝固点). The first kanji of the word Gyo (凝) is the same as in the given name. His alias or villain name was never revealed as well, so Yeti (イエティ) would be a good choice, named after the ape-like creature purported to inhabit the Himalayan mountain range in Asia of the same name.
Keigo's Father: Keiichi Takami (鷹見啓一, たかみ けいいち)
This character in the manga and anime is named that way, which means I would give him his given name only. Taka (鷹) means hawk, Mi (見) means to see, Kei (啓) means disclose, open, or say, and Ichi (一) means 1. The Kei in Keiichi is the same as his son Keigo (啓悟).
Habit Headgear: Takehiko Kito (鬼頭武彦, きとう たけひこ)
Oni or Ki (鬼) means demon, To or Atama (頭) means head, Take (武) means military, and Hiko (彦) means lad or boy. His surname is a reference to his unnerving appearance. Not a Demon Slayer reference.
Giant Villain: Kiichi Otomo (大友毅一, おおとも きいち)
O or Dai (大) means big, Tomo (友) means friend, Ki or Tsuyo (毅) means strong, and Ichi (一) means 1. His name is a reference to his appearance and personality. Ironic that he is the first villain to appear in the series, yet has a character that means friend.
Sludge Villain: Sohei Dorokawa (泥川創平, どろかわ そうへい)
Doro (泥) means mud, Kawa or Gawa (川) means river, So or Hajime (創) means begin or start, and Hei or Pei or Hira (平) means flat. His surname is a reference to his dirty mud-like appearance.
Swordkil: Takeshi Mekajiki (目梶木丈士, めかじき たけし)
Me (目) means eye, Kaji (梶) means sculling oar, Ki (木) means tree or wood, Take (丈) means height or stature, and Shi (士) means samurai. His surname is homophonous with swordfish in Japanese, Mekajiki (眼梶木), which is a reference to his unnamed sword quirk, as well as his villain name, though close.
Daigo: Daigo Saruno (猿野大悟, さるの だいご)
Saru (猿) means monkey, No (野) means field, Dai or O (大) means big, and Go or Satoru (悟) means enlightenment. His surname is a reference to his beast-like appearance, while his given name is the same as that of Daigo Yamamoto (山本大悟), the character’s voice actor, also simply known (and credited) by his given name, Daigo. He is part of the Japanese comedy duo Chidori (千鳥), who made a cameo appearance in My Hero Academia: Two Heroes as two of Wolfram’s minions.
Nobu: Nobuyuki Katai (片井信行, かたい のぶゆき)
Kata (片) means part or fragment, I (井) means water well, Nobu (信) means faith or truth, and Yuki (行) means line. His surname is can be also read as Heni, which is homophonous with displacement (physics) in Japanese, Heni (変位), a reference to his unnamed displacement quirk, while his given name is the same as that of Nobuyuki Hayakawa (早川信行), the character’s voice actor, also simply known (and credited) by his nickname, Nobu (ノブ). Like the previous entry on the list, he is also part of the Japanese comedy duo Chidori (千鳥), who made a cameo appearance in My Hero Academia: Two Heroes as two of Wolfram’s minions.
Glutton God: Shigeo Shokuzawa (食澤茂雄, しょくざわ しげお)
Shoku (食) means food, Zawa or Sawa (澤) means swamp, Shige (茂) means overgrown or grow thick, and O (雄) means masculine or male. His surname is a reference to his appearance, as well as his villain name in Japanese, Kuishin (食神).
Sanctum: Seizo Jiyumiya (自由宮聖造, じゆうみや せいぞう)
Ji (自) means oneself, Yu (由) means wherefore, Miya (宮) means temple or palace, Sei (聖) means holy, and Zo (造) means create or make. His surname means freedom temple, and Seizo means holy structure, referring to his villain name.
The Mother of Quirks: Seiko Yotsubashi (四ツ橋聖子, よつばし せいこ)
Knowing the Mother of Quirks is the mother of Chikara Yotsubashi (四ツ橋主税), I would give her given name only. Yotsu (四ツ) means 4, Hashi (橋) means bridge, Sei (聖) means holy, and Ko (子) means child. I chose Seiko as her given name for a reason, because her name, when Romanized, is an anagram for quirk in Japanese, Kosei (個性), since she was the first person to use the word "quirk" to describe meta abilities.
Shie Hassaikai boss: Takahito Saijo (斎条崇人, さいじょう たかひと)
Sai (斎) means purification, Jo (条) means article, Taka (崇) means respect or revere, and To or Hito (人) means person. The Sai in Saijo is the same character in Shie Hassaikai (死穢八斎會), while his given name fits given with his position during the time he founded the organization years before Kai Chisaki succeeded him.
Hood: Tsuyoshi Aida (会田強士, さいじょう たかひと)
Ai or Kai (会) means meeting or association, Ta or Da (田) means rice field, Tsuyo (強) means strong, and Shi (士) means samurai. His name fits since he used to be a street punk who made a living as a fierce underground fighter before being turned into a Nomu by the Doctor.
Gunga Mountain Villa Paranormal Liberation Front Commander: Kairo Dendo (傳堂会呂, でんどう かいろ)
Den (傳) means propagate or transmit, Do (堂) means temple or hall, Kai or Ai (会) means meeting or association, and Ro (呂) means spine or backbone. His surname is homophonous with electric or conduction in Japanese, Dendo (電動) or Dendo (伝導) respectively, while his given name is homophonous with circuit in Japanese, Kairo (回路), both referring to his quirk amplivolt, which can conduct and amplify electricity within their body, being able to release it afterwards. Ironic that he was never given a name, yet his quirk, as well as his ultimate move, is named in the manga and anime.

That is all I can present. If you know a character whose real name is unknown, comment down below and formulate his or her real name based on the character's qualities. Thank you!

2023.06.08 15:49 thedancingmind [QCrit] Adult Speculative Thriller THE DANCING DEAD (75k words, version 2)

Hi again, PubTips!
Thanks to u/Sullyville and u/Aza_ for extremely helpful feedback on my first query version (plus u/Sure_Western_215 for a friendly tip). I've attempted to address all of their notes in this second revision (while also reading more actual query letters and less dust jackets).
Query letter V2:

Orion Marsh isn’t surprised to be working on a database filled with death records—until he realizes that many of the deaths are in the future.
Having left a busy career in healthcare software to pursue a fuller life in tropical Roatan, Orion thought he’d found the perfect gig helping a remote organization untangle a large medical database. When he discovers the future-dated death records, he’s convinced there’s some big mistake. But then the people in the database start getting killed, right on schedule.
Ghosted by his short-lived employer, shock turns to horror as the killings continue and law enforcement fails to act on his bizarre tip. Emboldened by a beautiful vacationer who refuses to see the obvious danger, armed with a secret backup of the deadly data, Orion sets out to save the next victim on the list. A twisting path leads to a bloody confrontation, where he succeeds in saving a young woman’s life—only to come face to face with the person behind all the killings. Not a mastermind of murder; a neuroscientist named Ursa Gladd.
Harnessing technology meant to see beyond the limitations of the mind, using vivid murders as guideposts, Ursa thought her team was charting a future that, in truth, had already happened. Instead, they were probing a future of infinite, unresolved potential, unearthing a wave of killings that never should’ve happened. Including, in eight days, Orion’s own murder. But it gets worse: In bucking the natural way of unraveling time and possibility, Ursa’s team got their minds horribly tangled in the deadly future they’d seen. Now, for Orion to survive, the lab tech who’d witnessed his murder would have to die.
The Dancing Dead is a standalone novel with series potential. The story blends the dark mystery and rising peril from a scientific advancement gone wrong in Blake Crouch’s Recursion, with the Caribbean setting and eye-opening theories about our mind’s influence on reality in Nancy Kress and Robert Lanza’s Observer.
As a former director at a Medicaid software company, Orion’s path to reshape a busy life around personal values mirrors my own leap into creative writing. Having produced morbid healthcare reports while chatting with coworkers about quantum computing, I’m also close to the idea that powers the story: that, in a quantum world, the observation of a thing can change that thing—even the observation of a database of death records.

All feedback is very welcome and appreciated. Thank you!

2023.06.08 15:40 rainbow--penguin [SF] Chapter 55 - Returning Home

As enjoyable as the more relaxed journey had been, eventually it had to come to an end. After a week of meandering through the countryside and small villages, Madeline, Billie, and Lena were approaching their final destination — the city where it had all begun for Madeline, and where it would likely end too.
But they still had a couple of days before they reconvened with the others taking part in the attempted rescue mission, and Madeline had a couple more stops she wanted to make.
First, she insisted on stopping by the house she’d been meant to meet Liam at all those months ago, just in case. But her message and the supplies she’d left for him were still untouched.
The sight of the food and water bottled gathering dust sent a wave of grief through her. It clutched at her chest, making her heart feel as if it was trying to climb up her throat. Part of her was grateful that Billie and Lena had to wait a safe distance away to avoid detection by the Poiloogs. It meant there was no one to see the trembling limbs and the tears pricking at her eyes. But it also meant there was no one to slip a hand into hers or clasp her in a tight embrace. No one to fill the emptiness left behind by that wave of grief.
Still, there was hope. Until she’d tried everything — until they’d enacted this rescue mission — she couldn’t give up.
With a deep breath, Madeline wiped away the tears and reached for her walkie-talkie to let her friends know she was ready to move on.
Then began the journey across the city to the library. Her library.
Lena and Billie were both very understanding of her whims. They didn’t even question it, which Madeline was grateful for, having no real reason or logical explanation as to why it was necessary. It just was.
The walk was less pleasant than it had been in the countryside. Towering buildings and concrete and debris replaced rolling hills and trees and crystal blue lakes. Of course, there was still some greenery. Wildflowers wormed their way through gaps in the paving slabs. Ivy crept over buildings. Weeds sprung up from every nook and crevice. Nature always found a way. Perhaps one day, it would reclaim the cities entirely, and all traces of humanity would be wiped from the globe.
But humans were persistent too.
Thankfully, the Poiloog activity had diminished since the last time Madeline had been here. They only had to duck out of sight once on their journey, meaning they made good time.
When Madeline saw the towering shape of her library on the horizon, it set her stomach fluttering and churning and twisting. It was as if all the homesickness she’d pushed down and ignored came flooding in all at once now that she was back. Her chest constricted and swelled, her heart stuttering and squeezing and soaring, not knowing how to react to the flood of emotion.
For the second time that day, she wished that someone was there to comfort her. She imagined pouring her heart out to Lena, or collapsing into Billie’s arms and sobbing out her feelings.
But that wasn’t an option. No congregating before a night’s sleep. The precautions were even more important now that they were here.
So she stood alone, staring at her home of so many years, the home she’d shared with Liam for those few short months. Swallowing hard, she fought back the lump rising in her throat and forced her trembling legs to keep moving. One foot in front of the other.
When they finally reached the library, Lena and Billie fanned out to keep watch at either side of it while Madeline slipped around the back. The motion of climbing the garden wall was still in her muscles. Her toes knew exactly the spots to dig into without even thinking about it, and she’d soon hauled herself up.
The garden was just as she remembered it — an overgrown and unruly mess. A quick kick revealed that the water butt was completely full. That was good. She’d missed not having to worry too much about where her next drink would come from.
When she was done glancing around at the familiar grimy benches and flowerbeds, she crept through the back door. Or the space where the back door used to be, anyway. A Poiloog had torn through it the day she’d fled this place with Liam. Perhaps, one day, she’d be able to return to repair it.
Wood splinters creaked and crunched underfoot as she walked along the corridor, deeper into darkness. But she didn’t need to see to know where she was going here. She knew every corner of this building like it was a part of her.
Carrying on, she came out into the light spilling in from the long, tall windows lining the main hall. The smell of the dust and the paper — the smell of home — tickled her nostrils, bringing the lump in her throat ever higher, but she choked it back. Ignoring the stinging in her eyes as best she could, she looked around at the orderly stacks of shelves. All apart from one section near the middle where a bookcase had been pushed into another, sending books tumbling to the ground. Another thing to fix if she ever had the time.
Her vision started to blur as she remembered that moment, how Liam had come back for her despite telling him to run. How he’d saved her with his quick thinking. She hurriedly reached up to wipe away the tears and continued walking.
Aside from the missing bodies of the Poiloogs they’d killed, now simply purple bloodstains on the floor, everything was just as she’d left it. When she was satisfied it was safe, she returned to her old bedroom in one of the offices and slumped onto the mattress on the floor. Then, finally, she stopped trying to choke it all back.
She let the lump in her throat rise while the sting of tears in her eyes overflowed into a flood. Clutching her knees to her chest she sobbed out her feelings until there was nothing left. Her heart ached. Her throat ached. Her head ached. Her eyes ached. Every inch of her hurt, physical and emotional pain blending into one maelstrom that threatened to consume her entirely. But she knew it would pass. It had to. She had a job to do.
When the sobs finally subsided, with no more tears left to cry, she reached out with trembling hands to wipe her face clean, calmly doing her best to make herself presentable before reaching for her walkie-talkie.
She pressed the button on the side. “Okay,” she said, voice strained and gravelly. “It’s all clear in here. I… I think this would be a good place to stay for the night if that’s okay with you?”
“Of course!” Lena’s reply came almost instantly.
“Yeah,” Billie said, a little more slowly. “If you’re sure that’s what you want, Mads.”
Madeline looked around the familiar room. She looked at the bucket she’d used to wash every morning; the patterned throw she’d found on one of the sofas to use as a blanket, so soft to the touch; the piles of books she’d finished sorted according to interest, genre, and heft. Then, her gaze fell on a smaller pile — recommendations for Liam.
She lifted the walkie-talkie to her lips. “Yeah. I’m sure… It’s good to be home.”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was odd inviting Lena and Billie into her sanctuary, just as it had been when she’d brought Liam here all those months ago. But what made it even odder was that she wasn’t there with them as they came inside. She stayed tucked away in her bedroom while they each went off to separate meeting rooms or study rooms to make their bed for the night. Madeline did her best to direct them to the comfiest sofas via radio, while also steering them clear of Liam’s room. That was out of bounds. She had to keep it just as it was for if — when she got him back.
Once everyone was settled and suitably far away, Madeline wasn’t ready to be alone with her thoughts quite yet. She clung to the walkie-talkie like it was her last lifeline, drawing strength from her friends.
Thankfully, Lena and Bille were only too happy to keep talking too.
“I can’t believe you lived here!” Lena said, for possibly the hundredth time. “Didn’t you find it spooky, having all of this old building to yourself?”
Madeline shrugged to herself. “I always found it comforting. All that extra space was an additional barrier between me and the chaos outside.”
“I can see it,” Billie said. “It’s well situated for supply runs. Sturdy walls. Plenty of books to keep you occupied. And a good amount of space so you can keep in shape without setting foot outside.”
“Of course, you’d think of that,” Lena scoffed.
“But seriously, Mads,” they continued. “Thanks for bringing us here. It’s nice getting a glimpse of your life before we met. And I really can see you living here, all snuggled up in your fortress with your books. You’re a smart woman. I’d never have thought to come somewhere like here.”
“Thanks,” Madeline said. “It was a good life. As good as can be expected, anyway. Especially once… once it wasn’t just me.” The conversation trailed off for a moment.
Madeline wondered if the others were thinking about those they’d lost along the way. Billie had their brother Joe. But what about Lena? She assumed the medic had someone she was hoping to rescue too, but it felt rude to ask outright.
“It’s nice to get a better look at the place,” Billie said, suddenly breaking the silence. “Last time I was here there was this crazy lady attacking me so it was very difficult to look around.”
The tears clinging to Madeline’s eyes spilt over as a bark of laughter bubbled up. Trust Billie to steer the conversation back to less maudlin topics. She sniffed hard before replying. “That’s what happens when you break into somebody’s home.”
“Is it? I’ll have to take note of that for future.”
As the conversation continued, the patch of sky in Madeline’s window gained tinges of pink and orange before fading to the greyish purple of twilight. Still clutching the walkie-talkie in her hand, Madeline shifted slightly, laying back. The mattress she was sitting on scooted across the floor under her, making her heart jolt. That was something she hadn’t missed.

2023.06.08 15:29 ItsGreenLaser Why I want to move out of Canada

First and foremost, the weather. Oh, the weather in Canada is nothing short of a nightmare. The winters are long, harsh, and unforgiving. The bone-chilling cold seeps into your very being, making every step outside feel like a battle against nature itself. And don't even get me started on the snow. Sure, it looks pretty when you're sitting by the window with a warm cup of cocoa, but the moment you have to shovel your way out of your house or navigate treacherous roads, the charm quickly fades away. Then there's the cost of living. Canada prides itself on its universal healthcare system and social benefits, but it comes at a price. Taxes are sky-high, and don't even think about buying a home unless you want to be buried in a mountain of debt. Everything from groceries to gasoline is more expensive compared to our neighbors down south. It's like being punished for trying to make a decent living. And let's talk about the job market. I can't even get a job without minim wage with a collage degree. Sure, Canada has a strong economy and opportunities in certain sectors, but it's not all sunshine and rainbows. The competition is fierce, especially in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver. The limited job opportunities often force people to settle for jobs they're overqualified for or take on multiple part-time gigs just to make ends meet. It's a constant struggle to stay afloat in this cutthroat environment. I just want to get out of here but where do I go?

2023.06.08 14:18 pushphenna Where Can You Find Natural Mehandi?

Mehandi, also known as henna, has been used for centuries for its natural beauty and medicinal properties. With the growing concern for the use of synthetic chemicals in cosmetics and beauty products, many people are now opting for natural alternatives. Natural Mehandi is a perfect example of how we can use natural ingredients to enhance our beauty without causing any harm to our health or the environment.
Natural mehandi is made from the leaves of the henna plant. The leaves are dried and powdered, and then mixed with water to form a paste. The paste is then applied to the skin or hair, where it dyes the area a reddish-brown color. The dye in mehandi is called lawsone, which has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.

2023.06.08 13:22 NeatEhEff Tips for water propogation?

Hi everyone,
I've attempted to propogate a few times but they're never successful. They end up wilting or rotting.
I've tried pathos, ZZ, peperomia, spider plant.
Theyre in glass containers, I change the water frequently, they're not in direct sunlight (they're near a grow light) ... it's not working! I've even tried lightly dusting with rooting powder.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

World’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer begins producing hydrogen (hydrogentechworld.com)

Bloom Energy has begun generating hydrogen from the world’s largest solid oxide electrolyzer installation at NASA’s Ames Research Center. This high-temperature unit produces 20–25% more hydrogen per MW than commercially demonstrated lower-temperature electrolyzers such as PEM or alkaline

https://preview.redd.it/r9j9ub5zur4b1.png?width=1536&format=png&auto=webp&s=8de4ed62233ef7c13a523b704dc0d2708068d3f2
This electrolyzer demonstration showcases the maturity, efficiency and commercial readiness of Bloom’s solid oxide technology for large-scale, clean hydrogen production. The 4 MW Bloom Electrolyzer™, delivering the equivalent of over 2.4 tonnes per day of hydrogen output, was built, installed and operationalized in a span of two months to demonstrate the speed and ease of deployment.
“This demonstration is a major milestone for reaching net-zero goals,” said KR Sridhar, Ph.D., Founder, Chairman and CEO of Bloom Energy. “Hydrogen will be essential for storing intermittent and curtailed energy and for decarbonizing industrial energy use. Commercially viable electrolyzers are the key to unlocking the energy storage puzzle, and solid oxide electrolyzers offer inherently superior technology and economic advantages. Bloom Energy, as the global leader in solid oxide technology, is proud to share this exciting demonstration with the world: our product is ready for prime time.”
The current demonstration expands on Bloom’s recent project on a 100 kW system located at the Department of Energy’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL), which achieved record-breaking electrolyzer efficiency. In the ongoing project, 4,500 hours of full load operations have been completed with a Bloom Electrolyzer™, producing hydrogen more efficiently than any other process – over 25% more efficiently than low-temperature electrolysis.
The INL steam and load simulations replicated nuclear power conditions to validate full capability of technology application at nuclear facilities, and the pilot results revealed the Bloom Electrolyzer producing hydrogen at 37.7 kWh per kg of hydrogen. Dynamic testing conducted at INL included ramping down the system from 100 percent of rated power to 5 percent in less than 10 minutes without adverse system impacts. Even at 5 percent of rated load, the energy efficiency (kWh/kg) was as good or better than other electrolyzer technologies at their 100% rated capacity. These results will be presented at the Department of Energy’s Annual Review Meeting in Washington DC on 7 June 2023.
Dr. Ravi Prasher, CTO of Bloom Energy, said: “The amount of electricity needed by the electrolyzer to make hydrogen will be the most dominant factor in determining hydrogen production cost. For this reason, the efficiency of the electrolyzer, the electricity needed to produce a kilogram of hydrogen becomes the most critical figure of merit. This 4 MW demonstration at the NASA Ames Research Center proves that the energy efficiency of our large-scale electrolyzer is similar to the small-scale system tested at INL highlighting the strength of our modular architecture. The electrolyzer product is leveraging the Bloom platform knowhow of more than 1 GW of solid oxide fuel cells deployed in the field and providing approximately 1 trillion cumulative cell operating hours. The same technology platform that can convert natural gas and hydrogen to electricity can be used reversibly to convert electricity to hydrogen. With Bloom’s high-efficiency, high-temperature solid oxide electrolyzers, we are one step closer to a decarbonized future powered by low-cost clean hydrogen.”

April 5, 2022 ~Scandium emerges from the shadows~

Scandium emerges from the shadows - MMTA

https://preview.redd.it/r50wjw0vvr4b1.png?width=343&format=png&auto=webp&s=d2a2670c3411f9f5f915be5856236c16c3e938ad

Scandium has long been considered an “if” metal. If only it were available in quantity, it could transform aircraft production and fuel consumption. If only it were available in quantity, it could speed the emerging hydrogen economy. If only it were available in quantity, it could accelerate the rollout of 5G technologies. And so on.

The view has been that scandium could be used in numerous large-volume applications, if only supplies were sufficient to meet the potential demand. Manufacturers regularly cited a lack of sufficient scandium supply as the reason why they did not roll out new uses and products containing scandium.
After a near-mythic role in the 1980s (as a strengthening agent in aluminium alloys deployed in the last generation of Soviet MiG fighter aircraft and even, reputedly, in ballistic missile nosecones), scandium entered the banal in the 1990s, in sporting goods and, bizarrely, hand guns.

Bloom Energy turned the tide starting around 2010, with its introduction of fuel cells based on scandium-stabilised zirconia ceramic electrolytes. Bloom has grown rapidly and now represents perhaps 80% of the world’s annual consumption of SCANDIUM, a paltry 25t or so of oxide in 2021.

And yet, despite these rickety foundations, SCANDIUM consumption is poised to grow dramatically in the next decade, buoyed by new sources of supply and sustained by demand-side innovation.

The supply side

Let’s start with supply. Until about 2018, most scandium was supplied as a by-product in China and Russia, from uranium and titanium processing. Since then, however, much has changed.
First, Sumitomo Metal Mining built and has now commissioned a scandium recovery circuit at its Tagano Bay nickel high pressure acid leach (HPAL) plant in the Philippines. This plant recovers scandium oxalate for processing into oxide (and probably into scandium-zirconium oxide particles destined for Bloom Energy) in Japan. The plant recovers 7-8tpy of scandium oxide and when commissioned increased global supply by around 40%. Capital costs were perhaps US$5M/t of scandium oxide.
Second, the Chinese integrated titanium producer Lomon Billions has established a 20-30tpy scandium oxide facility with the potential to increase to 50tpy. The company estimates up to 100tpy of scandium oxide are available in its titanium plants using the sulphate process.
Third, in 2021, Rio Tinto commenced scandium recovery from its Sorel Tracy plant in Québec, Canada. The pilot plant can supply 3tpy of scandium oxide and cost US$6M. The site has the ability to supply an estimated 50-60tpy of oxide based on current raw material feed.
Finally, UC Rusal has both commissioned a 3tpy pilot scandium oxide plant, recovering scandium oxide from red mud deposits, and also commenced marketing and selling a range of scandium alloys (branded “ScAlution” alloys) that boast enhanced performance at low (typically 0.1%) concentrations of scandium.
Plus, it is not only Rusal that has pioneered low-scandium alloys. In the USA, Eck Industries, a specialist aluminium casting house, is commercialising cerium-based alloys in which scandium, again at low loadings, could provide additional strength as well as much reduced post-cast processing requirements.
Looking further out, there are numerous scandium projects in development, many of which should come into production around the middle of the decade, thanks to two parallel forces.
The main driver for scandium, as for so many minor metals, is vehicle electrification. There are multiple operating and development projects utilising HPAL technology to recover and separate nickel and cobalt in laterite deposits, many of which can in principle recover scandium. While the moral of Tagano Bay is that for existing plants retrofitting can be costly and low yield, there are emerging projects in Australia that are designing scandium recovery into their circuits alongside nickel and cobalt. The potential output of scandium can range from 50-100tpy or more, depending on the project.
The second driver is the heightened concerns over supply chain security for critical metals. In the EU this has led to the “ScaVanger” programme to recover scandium from titanium waste streams. In the USA, red mud scandium recovery as well as by-product scandium stand to benefit.

The demand side

The demand side is a little more complicated but nonetheless extremely positive. Bloom’s power generation business continues to grow and has surely been reinforced by severe power disruptions in the past three years in California and Texas. Moreover, Bloom has now received initial approvals for maritime power generation (IMO regulations are forcing seagoing vessels to reduce dramatically their sulphur emissions, and Bloom can facilitate this change), and Bloom is also developing its technology to run in reverse, so to speak, as a generator of hydrogen. Critically, Bloom in the past five years has managed to bring its system costs and performance under control, removing any technology-related going-concern issues.
Scandium is also a strong candidate for RF antennas able to support 5G frequencies. A typical high-end cell phone may require 100 RF filters, and in the 5G frequency range, scandium aluminium nitride is being used as the active material in these filters (called “bulk acoustic wave,” or “BAW” filters).
Aerospace is a third area of application, and while commercial aviation likely remains years away from broad use of scandium alloys, near-term use in space and autonomous aircraft is an avenue for strong potential growth of scandium alloys. The cost to place 1kg in orbit has dropped dramatically but is still of the order of US$1,000/kg, so any system weight reductions can be extremely valuable.
Electric vehicles (EVs) also offer the potential for large volumes of scandium demand. Weight reduction is the obvious reason. Lux Research has estimated a 1kg weight saving in an EV will be worth US$5 in 2030. But a second consideration is overall product cost. Scandium can reduce or potentially even eliminate the need for post-casting heat treatments, which can in some instances double the cost of an as-cast part. Thus the savings from the use of scandium alloys, especially at low scandium loadings, can be large.
In addition, as EVs shift to heat pumps in their HVAC systems, scandium can support the implementation of aluminium radiators without adding substantial system volume (as discussed by CM Group in its 2018 scandium report).
Naturally, there are other opportunities for scandium. Achieving a robust aluminium alloy able to perform at 300°C could displace large amounts of titanium, and Eck’s alloys are closing in on this goal. Maritime applications, especially in the military arena but also in autonomous vessels and ferries, could embrace scandium thanks to its greatly enhanced anti-corrosion impact in aluminium. Passenger jets are also a market that is likely to happen at some point.

Most important, perhaps, is the fact that well financed firms have entered the market and are able to supply up to about 100tpy each. Supply at this level is all-but-certain to create demand, and in turn this should stimulate new supply. Scandium’s chicken-and-egg problem, in which lack of supply held back demand that in turn held back supply, has been reversed, with growing (and reliable) supply poised to stimulate actual demand, that in turn will pull through new supply, and transform scandium from “if” to “when”.

Incorporation of scandium in materials has environmental benefits across multiple industrial sectors, particularly in decarbonization of energy. One pathway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions is to generate electricity using hydrogen or synthetic liquid fuels, which are more efficient than combustion engines and easily used in co-generation of electricity and heat (IEA, 2019). The functional technology is a fuel cell. A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) produces electricity by oxidizing an energy carrier. The standard SOFCs produced by Bloom Energy are refrigerator-sized and input liquid or gaseous hydrocarbons (methane or biogas) to produce 100 kW of power. These cells process natural gas, biogas, or hydrogen to generate electricity with higher efficiency; up to two times higher compared to a gas-fired power station with efficiency of only 33–48% (Deepika et al., 2018). They are typically used to produce electricity and heat on-site for large buildings (Bloom Energy, 2021a). Currently, SOFC producers (e.g., Bloom Energy) utilize yttrium-stabilized zirconia and a scandia-stabilized zirconia in electrolytes; however, there are benefits of utilizing scandium over yttrium. Use of scandia-stabilized zirconia increases electro-conductivity and decreases operation temperature, resulting in higher efficiency and reliability (Deepika et al., 2018; Laguna-Bercero et al., 2009). Spurred by carbon reduction and global renewable energy initiatives, Bloom Energy is expanding its partnership worldwide (Bloom Energy, 2020, 2021b), resulting in increased demand in the SOFC market and scandium oxide required to produce SOFC boxes (Weinstein et al., 2018).
Scandium also has potential for light-weighting (alloys), which is important for improving fuel economy as it requires less energy to transport lighter materials. Currently, transportation contributes 27% to total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions and 14% globally (EPA, 2022; IEA, 2022b). The Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards require vehicle manufacturers to continuously increase fuel efficiency (NHTSA, 2022). One approach is through light-weighting by replacing conventional aluminum alloy parts in vehicles with scandium alloys, potentially reducing 10% of vehicle mass and thus 6–8% of emissions (Joost, 2012). Given that the United States passenger vehicle emissions were 3.2 gigatonnes in 2020, this would translate to 0.2–0.3 gigatonnes of reduction (IEA, 2022a). In the United States, the Build Back Better agenda mandates 50% of new vehicles in 2030 must be EVs (The White House, 2021). To push emission reductions further than electric vehicle adoption, light-weighting should be considered. If legislation mandated regulation like Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards for EVs, there will be further reductions in energy demand. Lighter scandium alloys serve to reduce energy demand from transportation, which directly aids to mitigate climate change induced by automobiles.
Another example of light-weighting is for commercial airplanes. The bionic partition structure is a wall partition between crew members and passengers, which also serves as an emergency stretcher and foldable seating for crew members (Airbus, 2016). Current commercial airplane's partition structures are bulky and heavy, weighing approximately 63 kg (Lau, 2016). Airbus and AutoDesk collaborated and successfully produced a 30 kg bionic partition structure using Scalmalloy®, a proprietary aluminum-magnesium-scandium alloy (APWORKS GmbH, 2015; Rhodes, 2015). Replacement of 4 conventional partition structures per A320 plane in commercial aircraft with Scalmalloy® structures could save up to 465,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year (Airbus, 2016).
Despite scandium's potential role in meeting future sustainability goals, historically and currently, scandium is under-utilized because of its low supply and high cost due to its nature as a by-product. Prices of scandium oxide ranged from $3,800–5,000 per kg from 2013 to 2020 (Gambogi, 2017, 2020, 2021), placing scandium among the most expensive elements in production. High prices and low supply are due in part to its production as a co-product - production is dependent on the demand of other primary metals it is mined with. For example, when there is an increase in scandium demand and price, supply does not respond instantaneously because producers need to increase production of the primary products. This leads to price volatility. Scandium oxide is produced as a co-product due to its sparse concentration in ore, which makes it uneconomical to mine alone. It has been extracted as a co-product with iron ore, other rare earths, titanium, and zirconium in China; uranium in Kazakhstan and Ukraine; apatite (phosphorus) and uranium in Russia; and nickel in the Philippines (Gambogi, 2021). The global production of scandium oxide was 14–23 tonnes (15–25 tons) per year in 2020 (Gambogi, 2021), which was small in comparison to 220,000 tonnes (240,000 tons) of global rare earths oxide per year (Cordier, 2022) and 68 million tonnes (75 million tons) of aluminum per year (Lee Bray, 2022).
Scandium appears to continue as a co-product in the future, for the most part. Mining companies expect scandium to be a minor co-product from mining other metals such as nickel, cobalt, titanium, niobium, etc. (Clean TeQ Holdings Limited, 2018; NioCorp Superalloy Materials, 2019; Platina Resource Limited, 2021; Wang et al., 2020). There is one exception in New South Wales, Australia by Scandium International Mining Corporation, whose primary product is scandium oxide (Scandium International Mining Corp, 2020). For consumption, SOFCs by Bloom Energy are the main scandium oxide consumer with 74% of total global consumption (CM Group, 2018). A typical Bloom Energy server box of 100 MW contains 13–15 kg of scandium oxide and costs $700,000–800,000 in 2010 (Ecclestone, 2020; Jenkins, 2010). Before subsidies, Bloom Energy servers cost approximately $0.14 per kilowatt-hour of electricity compared to $0.10 per kilowatt-hour of retail power price on the U.S. national grid (Helman, 2020). Although sufficient and reliable supply play an important role in other sectors (e.g., SOFCs, commercial aerospace), price is crucial in adoption in other sectors (e.g., sporting goods, beverage cans). Abstract continues....

MAY 29th 2023~ Jim/NIOCORP respond to question on recent Scandium News Release above:What comes to mind right off the bat is:

*A)"How is this Scandium AlSc master Alloy different than what Niocorp produced with IBC & AMES laboratory???"*Response:

"It is a different process that will be utilized. "

*B) Will this be a Patentable approach now moving forward? in conjunction with Nanoscale???*Response:

" Yes and yes. But we do not discuss the details of intellectual property matters except as required by law"

(\****This is very interesting indeed because a few years back Niocorp was not interested in patenting any such materials!)*
*C) IS NIOCORP still engaged with IBC, AMES & OTHER ENTITIES in regards to Scandium Alloy production & uses moving forward? and with the New Niobium & Titanium oxides as well!!!!
*Response:

"We are focusing on our partnership with Nanoscale on the production of AlSc master alloy, but we engaged with a number of parties on various elements of our scandium-aluminum master alloy business development. We are not working with IBC on niobium or titanium product development efforts."

(****SOUNDS LIKE OTHER COLLABORATIONS ARE ONGOING WITH POSSIBLE PRIVATE & GOVERNMENT ENTITIES?? OFF-TAKE AGREEMENTS & SO MUCH MORE! COULD BE IN PLAY AS THE MINE IS BUILT & NEARS PRODUCTION!!!!!!)

"ENGAGED WITH A NUMBER OF VARIOUS PARTIES!!!!"
