I was on the SF BMR wait list for 12 years

2023.06.08 13:57 IntelligentCABlonde I was on the SF BMR wait list for 12 years

I finally won the lottery for brand new housing. I am both a senior and disabled. The paperwork alone took nearly a year for approval. Still I was apprehensive about moving smack into the middle of the Tenderloin's worst area. Finally my application was approved by the MOHC. I suffer from PTSD and Agoraphobia so moving versus just ending it all was a 6 month debate. Seriously. The new place is considered to be a new Micro Studio. Partial kitchen. Step in shower and shared common areas. Still luxury compared to older places or SROs. I reluctantly arranged to move in and decided to make the best of it. The very day I moved in I tripped on a tree stump, fractured my skull and broke my right arm in 3 places and dislocated my shoulder. No one to help me at all. Now that I'm in I've found out that my ONLY neighbor on my side of the building is a squatter, a drug addict and has people over all of the time 24/7 with bicycles in the hall, cigarette smoke and his homeless friends using our laundry room, stealing everything not nailed down and so much more. I am 69 years old and have repeatedly told the 'tenant' that I am allergic to cigarette smoke, etc. All to no avail. I have also told him he can't have guests over 24/7. One night my dog's barking woke me and I stepped out to see what was up and ran into the 'tenant' with a crowbar and copper wiring trying to gain entry. I had no idea he didn't legally have possession or a key fob. He started ranting about the manager and how he was illegally locked out and his stuff was inside. I told him that was between him and management but I wouldn't allow him to break in. He didn't leave until I called the police. I admit I am clueless to this day as to what an addict looks like under the influence but his eyes are always super bright like he's on some kind of stimulant, but I don't know. The manager says he is NOT the tenant who rented the apartment but that eviction is being pursued. I suspect the manager did lock him out at one point and the squatter got legal help to regain access. The manager swears he did not lock him out but the only way to get in is with a security fob. No keys. Now I've found out that allegedly the builder misclassified this building nearly 3 years ago as an SRO which is why we have mailboxes, keys but NO USPS delivery. Meanwhile the alcoholic on site manager goes through all of my mail and I have had numerous packages go missing. A brand new credit card was both delivered and stolen on the 31st of this month and there were 16 charges on it in one day to Uber, Uber Eats and ZipCar. I was finally made aware when the credit card company notified me via email that my charge at Safeway and another market were declined "because I hadn't activated my card yet!" WTAF? They let this thief use the card all day long until it was flagged at Safeway and THEN they email me? Bottom line I am terrified that living here with an alcoholic property manager and a junkie neighbor whose door directly faces mine, makes my life literally in danger. I can't move and every time I see the squatter I just want to stab him. So yes I am losing it. I feel so trapped and terrified and wonder if I will end up snapping. This activity is right in my face 24/7. My hallway has 6 units with 4 always having been unoccupied. Honestly I don't see how they can in good faith rent to anyone new knowing the danger of this hallway. I've never once seen them even attempt to show the empty units. I am beyond sad and hopeless. On the rare occasions I have to leave my place to access my car six blocks away I have become nearly intolerant of the homeless overnight. I used to volunteer at shelters and often fed homeless, but now I am just hardened. I see a passed out half clothed body on the sidewalk and I just step around it. I used to call 911 or 311. Now I don't know what to do. I don't want to die but see no future at all. I nearly died waiting for Below Market Housing and now it's literally killing me. I had no idea the entire time I was on the wait list what BMR really meant. I never qualified for low income or senior housing. None of that. I just assumed that BMR meant just that, that if you made below 100K or so you could apply for a discounted unit. They can blame London Breed all they want but the real reason for the current situation in SF is COVID, the lock downs and subsequent sky rocketing homeless population. I know for a fact that the majority of theft, as in major theft, are well organized thieves most of which don't even live in SF. I ran into a team of them before my beloved elderly dog died. I used to take him out to the tree out front at all hours to pee. I ran straight into thieves one night. They were well organized, well dressed and gone as soon as they saw me. They were nothing like the homeless plaguing our neighborhood right now. These people are self medicating, angry and often vicious. They are hardly the criminal element bringing SF to its knees. Criminals? Yes with shoplifting and all manner of self destructive and hateful crimes, but not the well organized criminal element that is literally robbing SF of its most valuable resources, tourism. I used to be a huge Pelosi fan until I saw her speaking at a charity event for the hospital where her husband was treated following his attack. When I was taken to UCSF per MY request and even with excellent insurance I wasn't given Pelosi type treatment. I was treated like a vagrant. I waited an entire day for my exam, head CT and arm cast. I was never hooked up to an IV, fed, given water or ice chips nor was blood even drawn. After the 2nd head CT when it showed I still had inter cranial bleeding, did they finally do an MRI. San Francisco is now two classes, the rich and the poor. I'm not street poor but might as well be. I don't know where to go from here. Caught up in an untenable housing situation and literally not being able to afford housing in Southern California which is where I grew up, went to college and law school. Sadly since my beloved dog died I can't imagine living anywhere without him.

2023.05.31 04:18 Bruingirl123 When to pay supplemental fee?

UOP, USC and UCSF all listed a link to pay the supplemental fee on the AADSAS app. I turned in my dental app yesterday but I was wondering if I should wait until school receives my app and email me to pay the fee or if i should just go ahead and do pay it with the link they provided on the ADSAS application. I’m scared of there being delays in my application because I did not wait for there email. Does anyone know?

2023.05.11 22:23 labratusername How long do I have to accept a job offer?

Hi all,
I’m lucky enough to have a job offer at UCSF as a research tech. I interviewed yesterday, and the PI sent me the job information, along with a $60,000 salary offer. I am most likely going to join this lab, but I have an interview with a Harvard lab coming up.
How should I respond to the UCSF PI’s email? Can I ask if I can have a few days? I will most likely join his lab, but I want to complete my interview first.
Thanks!
Eta: never had to find a job before, so I’m new to all of this. Always did research at the same lab.

2023.04.08 04:42 CollectionTimely4594 Please help me with my school list!! (3.79/513)

Hi!! I’m about to apply for the 2024 cycle and I need some help with my school list.
Background: 22 y/o female, CA resident, Asian (Filipino if that changes anything lol). I’m applying to 35 schools max, so I’m looking to add 4 more! I haven’t looked into Florida too closely, but that’s a state that I’m interested in. I tried to take into account the OOS friendliness for the schools, but some might have slipped under the radar. Also, I’m looking to apply to MD/MPH schools, but it isn’t a definite need.
Major: Public Health Sciences
cGPA: 3.79
sGPA: 3.72 (This might be higher for DO schools since they count public health classes as science, but I haven't calculated it)
MCAT: 503 —> 513
Extracurriculars:
LORs:
Current School List (in no specific order):
DO:
MD:
CA Schools-
OOS Schools-
MSAR just updated this month and the stats for some UCs have gone down so that makes me a little hopeful. I’m not sure if any of the schools I’ve listed are heavy on community service/volunteering, and if any are, should I still apply to them? I feel like my volunteering hours are pretty low. I think my science LOR might also be a problem and I’m planning to email the admissions offices about exceptions but... I just haven’t gotten there yet. Anyways, any help is appreciated!

2023.04.02 08:28 livetoride86 My mom suffered a grade 5 SAH and is in the ICU.

I'm not sure if this is allowed, my sweet loving mom suffered a grade 5 SAH on 03/17/23. She was airlifted to UCSF and have been in the ICU since. My siblings live in Oregon and this is taking a financial toll on us. We are juggling work, school and traveling to SF which is expensive. If you find it in your heart to pray or take time to read, share or donate to my mom's gofundme. 2023.03.30 23:44 ennui314 Feeling conflicted about grad school (advice appreciated)

So I applied to 10 schools this cycle, all for neuro PhD programs. I got interviewed and accepted at only one, Wash U in St Louis, and I'm really conflicted about whether or not I should go. For some background, I applied right out of undergrad and I didn't really choose any safeties. I know that more and more people are taking 1-3 gap years and I figured if I didn't get into anywhere this time around then I'd be a tech for a couple of years. In retrospect it would have probably been smarter to apply to umbrella programs, but too late now. The dilemma I'm having is that I did like WashU a lot when I visited, but since I didn't get any other interviews it's difficult for me to compare the culture, quality of life, and student personalities with other schools. As such, any advice others have about life at WashU, grad school, or more education / career planning in general would be greatly appreciated.
For more context, I have two weeks left to make a decision. I've applied to a couple of research tech jobs, but nothing I'm super excited about yet. If I decide not to go to WashU, I have a few profs who I'm gonna ask to see if they could help me get interviews at labs at their former schools (which would align more with my interests), but since I'm not sure if I would take those offers, I haven't gone forward with that yet. Still it does mean I'd be presumably turning down grad school without a solid job lined up.
The big things I liked about WashU are: Cost of living. From what I've seen it's basically impossible to beat StL in this regard. I met multiple grad students with mortgages, which isn't something Ive heard of almost anywhere else.
Research. My interests are broad enough that I believe I could find a lab I'd like at most Neuro programs that have faculty focusing on psychiatric illness. However, one PI I met at WashU does exactly the kind of work that I'd want to do in the future and two others do things that are relatively close. I know that the one PI I'm most interested in is accepting rotation students this year, but he does only have one spot, so it's not guaranteed I could get in. However from what I heard from current students in the program, most people get their first choice lab.
Culture. Most students and faculty I met were friendly and more than willing to talk frankly about research and life in general. I also had three different faculty members (one of whom I didn't interview with) email me after I was accepted to offer to speak with me more, which I really appreciated. While WashU's program seems pretty collaborative, I can't really know if this is specific to the school, or kind of the same everywhere.
Funding / opportunities. All the programs I applied to were fully funded, but WashU is finishing construction on the largest neuro building in the Western hemisphere and they now get the third most NIH grants of any med school. I imagine I'd be similarly supported elsewhere, but it does feel like WashU is really building up it's Neuro program now, so it could be a good time to get involved.
The things I don't like as much: Location. This is probably my biggest reservation. I'm from the northeast, and although I applied to schools all over the country, it does worry me a bit to be in a city that's so far from anywhere else (afaik Chicago is like 5 hours away by car). I'm also not big on hot weather, so summer could be a bit rough. Additionally, I would prefer to be in a city that's more walkable / has better public transit, but I am already used to driving a lot so it's not the worst that I'd need to get a car.
Potential future opportunities. This is definitely harder to judge, but I worry that going to WashU could hurt my postdoc chances when competing against graduates from Harvard, UCSF, Stanford, etc. I know WashU is a great program (and top ranked for whatever that's worth), and lots of grads go onto to do really cool things, but I worry that maybe I'd be better off waiting a couple of years and reapplying.
Is it dumb for me to miss out on a potentially great opportunity just in case something better works out? Am I overly concerned about getting future opportunities with a PhD from WashU? Are any of the pros / cons I've listed based on false premises? Any advice others have to offer would be greatly appreciated.

2023.03.03 20:27 Serious_East9064 Mindfulness Research Study

Hello everyone! I wanted to let you all know about a research study that is currently being conducted through UC Davis and UCSF about long COVID and depressive symptoms associated with long COVID. The study will assess the effects of mindfulness on these symptoms. There are some limitations on who may participate to ensure various statistical things. This is not to say that anyone who does not qualify for the study does not have a valid or real experience with long COVID symptoms. Just bureaucracy!
We will be recruiting until April 11, 2023. If you, or anyone you know, are interested, please follow the link to our prescreening survey to see if you qualify. All relevant results we find from this study will be readily available to the public as soon as possible. Thank you all for your assistance and interest! Please feel free to message me or email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) if you have any questions or concerns.

2023.02.28 20:17 thismouthfulofdirt Mid-Cycle Recap (as a Reverse Splitter)

Stats: 3.9high, 16mid, nURM, KJD, T4 softs

A: UCLA, UCSF previously Hastings ($$.5), GW ($$), USC ($$)
WL: Duke, UMich, UChicago, UPenn, Northwestern, UC Irvine (Withdrawn), UT Austin
R: Harvard, Yale, Berkeley, Cornell
Holds: Georgetown (did the group interview in Nov), NYU
Pending: BU, WashU (interviewed Nov), Vanderbilt, Stanford, Columbia, UVA

I always find it really interesting looking at other people’s mid-cycle recaps, so here’s mine as a reverse splitter! For extra info: I sent in all my applications between early-late October, and I’m a CA resident. Also, please don’t ask me about status checker things—I never really paid much attention to them, and mostly relied on email lol :”)
Honestly, I’m a little down about being totally locked out of the T-14 so far, but it’s more of a mental block than like… genuine frustration, if that makes sense. Also, it’s not really a surprise given my stats + the fact that I’m an uninteresting applicant as a whole haha. I knew they were reaches! Honestly, I’m kind of surprised I have as many WLs as I do instead of flat Rs, although I’m basically taking them as soft Rs anyway!
I suppose I could have retaken the LSAT to strengthen my app, but I have terrible test anxiety and don’t have much faith in my ability to perform better under pressure, so I decided against it. Besides, I’m super happy with my acceptances so far! I like my options enough that I won’t R&R, which was an option I kept in mind before applying this cycle.
Anyways, I hope you all are taking care of yourselves and not letting this cycle get to you too badly—it’s incredible that you’re all taking this step at all and that you’ve gotten so far already!

2023.02.01 19:26 NOWSILVER My Common Sense Made Me Smarter Than the CDC and Most of the Entire Medical Establishment

MASKS DO NOT WORK TO STOP COVID. Cochrane study shows no evidence they work. Us folks with common sense have been saying that for a long time. This discredits the CDC as well as the entire mainstream medical community (except for UCSF's Vinay Prasad).
Jump to pdf pages 24 & 25 if you are pressed for time.

I realize some of you will be quite upset that I am challenging the dogma of the VaxCovidian Church and it's sacramental face-diaper (for the peasants but not needed by the Elite).
Sorry - NOT sorry!

2023.01.09 06:41 pootatowedges 3 Pre-December Interviews, but radio silence since Dec 15th. What should my next steps be?

Hi everyone! I had 3 pre-december interviews (USCF and Western in Oct, Touro end of Nov), but didn't hear back from any those schools on Dec 15th. What are my chances? After looking at SDN forums for these schools, it seems that the remaining spots often go to post-december interviews. Does anyone know if this is true?
Was thinking of enrolling in a Microbiology course to (1) show that I am actively working on my application and (2) because it's a highly recommend class for most schools (including these three). For some context, I graduated in 2020. Would taking this class + providing an update email be a good idea? Or should I just stick to what I'm currently doing (continue working at a dental office and volunteering, and mostly wait it out)?
Should I send any update emails or letters of interest? Letter of intent? (UCSF is my top choice). I'm not sure if these schools are particular receptive to those. Feelin' a bit defeated. Thanks everyone.
