Do Canadian Big 4 US tax groups hire Canadian CPAs with no US tax experience?

2023.06.09 15:52 ZEALTeam6 Do Canadian Big 4 US tax groups hire Canadian CPAs with no US tax experience?

My school only offers 1 class and it’s non-mandatory that focuses solely on US Fed tax. If I don’t take this class then I’d have basically 0 knowledge on US tax, would I be able to recruit for a U.S. tax group at my Canadian big 4 office or would they only hire Americans or people with experience?

2023.06.09 15:14 Minimum-Eggplant9046 Accused of being on phone while driving

Hi, I’m from wales. In the beginning of April my boyfriend (22) was on his way home from work and his phone fell out of his phone holder, he caught it and put it back in place and continued driving. After being home for about 10minuted or so a police officer arrived at the house. He’d been doing a traffic stop on the opposite side of the road at the time my boyfriends phone fell. He accused him of being on his phone videoing the officer, after trying to explain what actually happened the officer looked him dead in the eye and said ‘well quite frankly I don’t believe you.’ ‘I’m fed up of coming to RTCs in this area because of drivers like you’. The officer told him he’d have a letter in 13-28 days about any fine/points, and left. After two months the letter finally arrived. The standard for being caught of your phone while driving is 6points and a £200 fine, for most of us that’s not too bad, however my boyfriend has only been driving since November 2022, which means his license will be revoked and these points will still be there when he gets a new license.
My reasons for this post is, does anyone think this is worth appealing? Has anyone been in a similar situation, appealed and been lucky? Or should he just accept it? I know the laws now say that even touching your phone while driving will result in a fine but this all seems a bit unfair. TIA

2023.06.09 15:08 PenIll3161 Employer continually paying me late and just admitted to shorting my contract rate for MONTHS

Partial rant, partial cry for help.
So I work in academia as a research assistant and get paid a contracted stipend each year. From Fall 2022 - Spring 2023, I was supposed to make $22,000 (paid biweekly). However, I was added to a training grant in November 2022, which was supposed to raise my stipend to $26,000 (paid every 3ish months) starting 11/1/22.
Well, I never got paid my new contract amount, the university kept paying me at my original contract rate. I contacted the grant office multiple times over many months and was met with excuses of "system issues". Finally I got fed up and contacted the dean over the entire college, and surprise-surprise, the issue was resolved in under 24 hours.
Since then, every time I've been scheduled to get paid under my new contract, I've been paid late. Before I got my third installment, I was proactive in bugging my grant office and it was resolved almost immediately.
NOW, I get the following email referencing my old fall contract, which was supposed to run from 9/1/22 until my new contract took over:
"It has come to our attention that your contracted stipend level did not meet the minimum threshold set by [UNIVERSITY] for this academic year. Therefore, we will be adjusting your paycheck starting with the 6/6/2023 pay date, and you should see an adjustment equal to $25.52 per biweekly pay period from 9/1/2022 – to present to your stipend payment, with an additional $25.52 added to your biweekly pay until the end of your current appointment period (8/31/2023)."
I got a follow-up email saying that for me, specifically, "Backpay will be from 9/1/22 until you went onto the training grant. Not after that."
Is this even legal? This (admittedly not much) money would have been owed nearly a year ago. I don't know how or when I'll actually get repaid, and I'm waiting to hear back from HR.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a huge university could be so incompetent. I would have quit by now, but my contract is also paying my tuition, and I'll be graduating with my degree in December.
I'm at the point where I'm completely exhausted with this place. It's been a huge stressor getting paid late and at the wrong amount for so long, and I'm exasperated by the thought of trying to get them to pay the money I'm owed from my original contract. It's so little money I don't think it would be worth it to hire a lawyer, nor could I probably afford it. Under my current, but not previous, contract, I'm classified as an independent contractor, so I don't know if there is any recourse in contacting my state department of labor. I'm not in a position to leave this job until the end of the year.
Any recommendations on how to get the money back from 9/1/22 to my new contract start, or suggestions on how to prevent future late payments would be greatly appreciated.

As the summer heat sets in, there's nothing quite like a refreshing cold coffee to beat the high temperatures. And what better way to provide this delicious beverage than with a cold coffee ice vending machine? Not only do these machines offer convenience and cost savings, but they also ensure that customers get their caffeine fixes without having to brave the scorching sun. If you're looking for ways to keep your customers cool and caffeinated during hot summer days, read on for tips on buying and maintaining a top-notch cold coffee ice vending machine in Gurgaon.

Benefits of Cold Coffee Ice Vending Machines

Cold coffee ice vending machines offer a range of benefits for both business owners and customers. For starters, they provide a convenient way to enjoy cold coffee without having to leave the office or home. This means that employees and clients can get their caffeine fixes without wasting time standing in long lines at cafes or restaurants. Moreover, these vending machines are cost-effective as they eliminate the need for additional staff members to prepare and serve coffee. They also reduce operational costs such as electricity bills and water consumption since there's no need for brewing equipment or washing dishes. Another benefit is that cold brew coffee is less acidic than hot brewed coffee, which makes it easier on the stomach. This quality attracts health-conscious consumers who prefer low-acidic drinks over traditional options. Additionally, many cold brews use high-quality beans prepared using specialized methods that improve taste profiles. The result is a smooth, rich flavor with lower bitterness levels compared to other iced coffees available in stores. Investing in a cold coffee ice vending machine provides an opportunity to attract new customers while offering existing ones convenience and cost savings when enjoying their favorite beverage during hot summer days.

Cost Savings of Using a Cold Coffee Ice Vending Machine

One of the biggest advantages of using a cold coffee ice vending machine is cost savings. This type of machine can save you money in several ways. Firstly, it eliminates the need for additional staff to serve customers and prepare beverages. With a vending machine, customers can easily get their own cup of coffee without needing assistance from an employee. Secondly, cold coffee ice vending machines are more energy-efficient than traditional refrigerators or freezers. They require less power to run since they only cool the drinks when someone makes a purchase. This means lower electricity bills for your business over time. Thirdly, by investing in a cold coffee ice vending machine instead of buying pre-packaged drinks from suppliers, you'll be able to cut down on packaging waste and transportation costs associated with shipping bottled or canned products. With a cold coffee ice vending machine, you have complete control over pricing and inventory management. You can set prices that cover your expenses while still offering competitive rates compared to nearby cafes or convenience stores selling similar products. Investing in a cold coffee ice vending machine provides long-term cost savings for businesses looking to provide high-quality beverages for their customers at an affordable price point.

Maintenance and Cleaning Tips for a Cold Coffee Ice Vending Machine

Maintenance and cleaning are important aspects of owning a cold coffee ice vending machine. Proper maintenance ensures that your machine functions optimally, while regular cleaning helps to prevent the build-up of bacteria and mold. Firstly, make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance and cleaning. This will help to ensure that you don't cause any damage to the machine or void its warranty. One key aspect of maintaining your vending machine is regularly replacing its filters. The filters help to remove impurities from the water used in making the coffee, so they can become clogged over time. Replace them at least every six months or as recommended by the manufacturer. Additionally, it's important to clean all components of your machine regularly - including both internal and external parts. Use only approved cleaners for each component, as using non-approved chemicals could cause damage or affect taste quality. Keep an eye on your supply levels - such as beans and milk - so that you can replenish before running out completely. This will not only avoid disappointments but also prolongs usage without compromising consistency. By following these tips, you can extend the life of your cold coffee ice vending machine while ensuring that it produces delicious drinks safely and consistently for customers' satisfaction.

How to Choose the Best Cold Coffee Ice Vending Machine

When it comes to choosing the best cold coffee ice vending machine, there are several factors that you should consider. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision: 1. Capacity: Consider the number of cups that the machine can dispense at once and how many servings it can hold in its storage tank. 2. Size and footprint: Ensure that the machine fits your space requirements while still providing easy access for customers. 3. Durability: Look for a vending machine made with high-quality materials such as stainless steel or aluminum to ensure longevity. 4. Features: Some machines come with additional features like customizable cup sizes or different flavor options, so consider what features are important for your business needs. 5. Maintenance and support: Choose a supplier who provides reliable maintenance services and customer support when needed to keep your machine running smoothly. By considering these factors, you will be able to choose the perfect cold coffee ice vending machine that meets all your business's specific needs.

2023.06.09 09:16 PatrickRedditting Feds Wouldn't Bother with LV Siting if Hoax

TL;DR: There's a major story in the Las Vegas incident because the feds are trying to cover it up. Everyone that can, please come foreward and/or investigate.
My argument:
- Local law enforcement is reaching out because they are seeing a cover-up according to James Fox.
- A person I know is friends with someone in local response. He told me on Monday, June 5th that this happened on May 1st as communicated by his contact, local response was told to stay quiet, and that later in the morining a special team came in and delted the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) 911 reports, which is highly illegal. (I'm not getting into personal details because a reddit post isn't worth potentially exposing local support team members that don't want to be identified.)
- Something happened because there is a cover-up. Human origins begs the question why some black-ops project landed in a fucking back yard in urban Vegas and why the government thinks they can bully local law enforcement over their own gross incompetence. Non-human origins also lends itself to a cover-up and, I would aruge, the same complaint about who the fuck they think they are in light of the whistleblowers.
- Very easy to punch holes in the family's story based on their behavior, very well detailed by George Knapp. I think the family's evasivness could be explained by fear. I can't explain the lack of good videos.
If you're involved:
- Please come forward. Black-ops incompetence to this level needs purging. Aliens needs exposure, for us all.
- You are protected if you come forward. Talk to a lawyer.

2023.06.09 07:49 Ruru_Kaimbe Perth Mint and the convicted killer

Perth Mint and the convicted killer
Justin Parker, the founder of Golden Valley, leaves a Port Moresby prison on bail in 2016. Despite his conviction for manslaughter, he retains full ownership of the company. Below: A family pans for gold together in PNG. The Perth Mint, owned by the West Australian government, is buying up to $200 million of ‘‘conflict gold’’ annually from a convicted killer in Papua New Guinea, a breach of its global accreditation and internal policies. An investigation by The Australian Financial Review can reveal the historic Mint has repeatedly ignored staff concerns around purchases from smallscale gold miners in PNG, a practice heavily criticised for using child labour, degrading the environment through the use of mercury, and promoting conflict.
Chaired by former Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh and backed by a state government guarantee, the Mint is the largest refiner of newly mined gold in the world and in February said it was at the ‘‘forefront of setting the highest possible ethical standards’’. But insiders, speaking on the condition they remain anonymous, said the Mint is paying little more than lip service to this pledge by dealing with the PNG firm, Golden Valley. It is owned by Justin Parker, who was convicted of manslaughter in August 2017 and sentenced to 13 years’ jail after beating his helicopter mechanic to death. He was released on parole last year.
Despite Mr Parker’s conviction, he has retained full ownership of Golden Valley and it remains a large supplier to the Mint, despite internal reservations. When a Mint employee asked a delegation of senior managers from Golden Valley how they dealt with competition in PNG, a representative said: ‘‘It’s easy, a gun to the back of the head.’’
Luke van Boehm, the managing director of Golden Valley, denied a comment like this was ever made by anyone at the company. But he said the Perth Mint had never conducted an audit on its supply chain, conceded mercury was often used by those it purchased gold from and that children were involved in mining with their families. ‘‘In a country like PNG, all the family gets involved,’’ he said during a phone interview.
He said Mr Parker was no longer a director of Golden Valley, but continued to have some input into its operations. Ciaran O’Faircheallaigh from Griffith University, who has studied smallscale gold mining in PNG and cited Golden Valley in his research, said the Mint could never claim its gold was ethically sourced.
‘‘They [the Mint] would have no idea where the gold came from. They would not have a clue,’’ he said. Both Mr O’Faircheallaigh and Mr van Boehm said small-scale gold mining provided muchneeded income at the village level in PNG and entire communities often depended on it for their livelihood. Mr van Boehm said efforts were being made to phase out the use of mercury. ‘‘We are trying to encourage the use of other chemicals,’’ he said. The Mint insiders said buying from Mr Parker was highly profitable, as the margin from Golden Valley was 10 times higher compared to other corporate customers such as Newcrest or Lihir Gold.
‘‘Golden Valley is happy to take a cheaper price because the gold is being washed through a government-backed institution,’’ one insider said. ‘‘They know if someone did proper due diligence then maybe the metal would not be accepted.’’ Mr van Boehm said he was not aware of this discount and denied his gold would be rejected by other refiners.
The Mint insiders said in previous years Golden Valley had sold up to 50,000 ounces to the Mint, worth $137 million at today’s prices. They said this had increased to around 80,000 ounces last year or $200 million at current prices. Richard Hayes, chief executive of the Mint, said it could not comment on individual customers but was acutely aware of the ‘‘complex issues’’ associated with small-scale gold mining in developing countries. He said five of the Mint’s largest PNG customers, who bought from smallscale miners, were subject to audits as the country was rated as a ‘‘medium risk’’. ‘‘All of our customers have been granted and currently hold export licences from the Bank of PNG and due diligence documentation accompanies all shipments from the nation,’’ Mr Hayes said in a statement. Like the consumer backlash over ‘‘blood diamonds’’ which forced buyers and cutters to be more accountable at the end of last century, the gold industry has sought to stamp out ‘‘conflict gold’’ and ensure the integrity of its supply chains in recent years. This is part of a broader push by companies and government bodies to ensure they meet their environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) responsibilities. In the gold sector the move towards ethical sourcing has been led by the world’s largest gold exchange, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which traces its roots to 1750 and the East India Company. The LBMA is loosely regulated by the Bank of England. Under the LBMA’s responsible sourcing policy refiners like the Perth Mint commit to not buying gold which promotes conflict, human rights abuses, including childlabour, and issustainably sourced.
‘‘Failure to adhere to the LBMA’s Responsible Sourcing Programme will result in the removal of the refiner from the Good Delivery Lists,’’ said the LBMA’s chief technical officer, Nick Harby, in a video explaining the policy. In a February press release the Perth Mint said it had ‘‘long been at the forefront of setting the highest possible ethical standards across all its operations’’. In launching an ethical supply chain solution, Mr Hayes talked about ‘‘child labour and other,
abhorrent practices’’ and how this contrasted with ‘‘ethically sourced [gold] from mines in Australia and the United States’’. He made no mention of the Perth Mint’s purchases of alluvial gold from PNG, of which Golden Valley is among the largest buyers. Nor did he mention that these small miners frequently use child labour and often remove impurities through the use of mercury, which is banned in Australia. ‘‘The use of mercury causes serious environmental and health problems. It is unambiguously awful,’’ said Professor O’Faircheallaigh from Griffith University. In addition, he said, silt from the gold mining often had an adverse effect on food suppliers and water quality downstream due to increased levels of sediment in rivers.
Professor O’Faircheallaigh said the Mint could never say with any confidence that the metal it buys from Golden Valley was ethically sourced. ‘‘Some of it may be [ethically sourced] but equally there would be a high proportion where mercury was used,’’ he said. A 2016 report co-authored by Professor O’Faircheallaigh also identified Golden Valley as a supplier of mercury. ‘‘Dealing in bulk mercury can be remarkably lucrative,’’ the report said, noting the likes of Golden Valley could expect a 10-fold mark-up. Mr van Boehm said the company did sell some mercury, but had sought to educate miners on its correct use to avoid the worst side effects of the chemical. These include physical and mental disabilities in children and compromised development, according to an article published in the European academic journal, Chemistry. ‘‘The health effects on the miners are dire, with inhaled mercury leading to neurological damage,’’ it said. ‘‘The communities near these mines are also affected due to mercury contamination of water and soil and subsequent accumulation in food staples, such as fish.’’
Another researcher who asked to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals said small-scale gold mining had a highly negative impact on remote villages in the PNG highlands. The researcher said when gold was discovered children were often taken out of school and there was an influx of outsiders. ‘‘Suddenly there are guns in the village, along with conflict and crime which had previously not existed,’’ the person said. ‘‘It is definitely not ethically sourced gold.’’
Typically, gold from these villages would make its way down to a regional centre, where an aggregator like Golden Valley would purchase it. From here it would be flown by helicopter down to Port Moresby and then onto Perth.

2023.06.09 07:35 No-Refrigerator7935 Stressed out

Honorary don't share this anywhere and I'm on mobile. You can look back at my post history for more details on the back story but long story short: husband is a officer candidate in the army, his mom down plays any achievement of his and does not like me, and his sister was a justmaybe she's crossing into justno territory more and more every day.
So my DH has been gone for army BCT and this is the longest we've ever been apart. We're in the final stretch but honestly him being gone hasn't been as horrible as I thought it would be. He calls me every Sunday for 90minutes and I get like 1-3 letters week if he remembers to actually send them haha. But his mother has made this whole process so stressful that I want to rip my hair out.
We've had a rough idea of when he was set to graduate since December. Anytime we tried to confirm whether or not she or SIL planned to attend the graduation it was met with vague non-commital answers. My DH is not good at confronting his mother, to be fair neither am I. But we were both getting fed up, especially since during a recent phone call he asked if she had made any plans since someone in his bay said their family was having issues securing a hotel. So I texted her (it was not very nice I'll admit that but I was tired of the run around) and told her I needed to know if they actually planned on attending because I needed to make sure I made the appropriate plans for family day and graduation day. In response I get this long drawn out response about her and SIL would need dog sitters, she doesn't feel comfortable traveling to far away (it's a four hour drive from our town and 2hrs from SIL) from the grandparents even with other people staying with them, and they aren't sure if they could get a hotel in time.
I said that's perfectly fine we'll miss seeing you there I'll make sure DH calls you one of those days. No reply ok fine. I still make sure to send her updates on how he's doing throughout this ordeal. Then we find out there's a good chance he'll be able to come home for a few days in between Basic and OCS. Immediately she's telling me she wants a family dinner on top of us visiting with everyone. I said no, that even with him coming home we would be taking a full day to ourselves and the other day would be divided amongst visiting both sides of the family and doing any finaly preparations for OCS. She literally left me on read. Ok whatever.
A few days pass and I'm on snapchat and I see SIL is posting about how she's so excited to be going to a music festival. I recognize the name of the festival in the same state his basic is in and I realize she's going for 4-5 days a week before he graduates Basic. I can understand if it was pre-planned and all that I can, but I still can't help but just be absolutely baffled by the logic of telling me you can't afford to go to his Basic cause of all these reasons but then turn around and arrange all of it for a festival?
This is where I could use some advice cause I've basically made my mind up I'm just not sure on execution. I'm going extreme low contact cause I just can't do this. How do I bring any of this up to my DH? I've generally tiptoed around this since he's been gone but he knows something up and he made it clear he knew on our last call and he expected answers when we saw eachother next. I just don't want to dump all of this on him when he should be focused on more important stuff but I'm at my limit for dealing with his family. So any advice on how to approach this in the least stressful way with him would be appreciated.

2023.06.09 06:56 Fold_Happy Pharmacy Insurance and PA

My daughter has idiopathic hypersomnia. The treatment for IH is the same as for narcolepsy. CVS is denying the claim for the prescription that was deemed medically necessary last year when they initially denied the claim. I was told it would stay on file. The doctors’ office is basically done dealing with the pharmacy and insurance after the latest denial and have not filed an appeal. I have to file the appeal, which is fine, and after speaking with CVS pharmacy benefits, I understand why the doc is done.
CVS is denying the claim because the medication is only approved for three conditions- narcolepsy, OSA, and shift work sleep disorders. They won’t even fill it. I explained that IH and narcolepsy are very similar and the medication my daughter takes is listed by Mayo, Cleveland, and virtually every reputable provider as the first choice in treatment. They repeated that she didn’t have the three conditions listed and was not eligible for the medication. I asked what meds were approved for IH. The first option she listed was the brand name for the generic drug that my daughter was being prescribed and they were denying. Additionally, I explained that the 3 medications mentioned were all the same as the denied drug and the last option was rohypnol, which cannot be filled at a pharmacy.
CVS told me to submit an appeal, but submitting an appeal can still mean it is denied. Or we can repeat the testing and hope that she has one more episode of REM in one of the sleep stages so that she can be diagnosed with narcolepsy instead of IH. The algorithm is denying conditions and medications that were nearly identical. I assumed that speaking to a person meant critical thinking skills would make it obvious how ridiculous the whole thing was. Nope. They still didn’t understand.
CVS told me that the doctor should just file the appeal. I explained that they last year, all of the information was on file, and appealing a medically necessary condition every year was not part of their duty once they have already proven the medication is medically necessary, it is alifelong incurable condition, that requires no additional testing. CVS wanted to know how they were supposed to know my daughter still needed the medication. I told her that the prescription is how they know she still needs it.
I think pharmacy benefits have gotten so used to just denying everything and using it as a means of security. My insurance was not very happy to hear that CVS suggested solution was to repeat an expensive round of testing to justify paying for a generic drug that is standard in the treatment of a diagnosed condition. I got a Good RX coupon and since it is for Meijer, at least I am not giving CVS any more money than I already am. Sleep disorders tend to run in families. I could not figure out why my last refill for the same medication was only 15 days. It has something to do with the number of pills they will cover in a 30 day time period. I have been trying to stretch my 15 day prescription to 30 days, my daughter hasn’t had hers for a week. We are hella sleepy in this house right now. I just don’t understand how insurance is able to dictate the care that we receive to this extent. We see the doctor every 6 months so that the prescription can be refilled and they can prove to the feds that they aren’t writing fraudulent prescriptions. Can I file a complaint with someone in my state or federally?

Interview with Vegas resident who witnessed aliens in their backyard.
Lots of interesting details in this interview on the Doug Poppa podcast.
Angel states that he was visited late at night by police Sergeants that stated the previous officers did not properly investigate the property. This is fishy to me. These individuals could have been feds. He also states they left cameras on the property. Maybe the feds think this area is now a UFO hotspot since it’s a crash site. I also think it’s weird he doesn’t talk much about what happens in the nearly 20 minutes of missing body cam footage while they’re in the backyard with the police. Let me know your thoughts on this interview.

2023.06.09 05:58 Write_The_Night_ I know and have interacted with one of the founders of Mom For Liberty.

Specifically Tina Descovich, my mother is close friends with her. I was forced into helping campaign for her a few years back when I was in elementary school.
If you ever see kids on the corner of a street in those dumb ass clusters for politicians to be elected for office, just know they're being fed a full load of bullshit.
Bitterness aside, I feel such guilt that I'm associated with them through loose ties, and that someone whom I'm directly related to supports such hate. I'm a highschool who's affected by these fucking ladies who are on a power trip saying they "don't co-parent with the government". All of it's bullshit and I guarantee that they don't give a damn about the students or teachers, and I'm frankly not surprised about the shortage of teaches at schools in my county. I took AP Human Geography this year, and my poor teacher had to tread some thin fucking lines and said on multiple occasions that she may get fired FOR TEACHING CONTENT IN THE FUCKING CLASS (specific instance was unit 7, redlining and blockbusting).
At first I didn't really know much about the group despite ties with the founder. After being involved in numerous campaigns and developing my own set of morals that conflict with their rhetoric, I've tried to put as big of a gap between myself and my mother's politics for the sake of my own mental health, and because I don't support it. But seeing posts in LGBTQ+ subreddits about their hate and hearing about it from my friends, it's just so depressing. I can't fathom the idea that gay/trans/queer people are soo scary that you need to ban any mention of them. Hell, a fuck ton of people that I know fit into the community, all highschoolers, and all students who are harmed by parents who "want the best for their children".
Being apart of these communities myself, and actively seeing something I ignored causing such harm is just so draining. Even though I fully know there's nothing that I can do.
(This is pretty incohesive, I just kinda started typing it out, but thanks for reading.)

2023.06.09 03:30 solaris_orbit Why is my frozen milk like this? Yellow milk fat floating seperate on top.

Hi i have about 20 bags like this worth of milk frozen. I was not an office supplier, i started cutting Lo milk intake in half and freezing half in May when i started to wean off the pump.
Im now down too pump a day and not producing enough to cover half her ontake so i started freezing everything i pump and defrosting one 150ml bag a day.
What is this!!! I have frozen milk before in the begining when i was stillmaking yello transition milk and i did not do this when defrosted. The milk is not off, it smells and tasted fine, no chunks. I defrost it in the tommee tippee bottle warmeron the milk bag setting, same as i did before.
This is the second bag like this. I can shake it back in but it starts to separate after a minute.
Am i doing something wrong! Am i missing the obvious and doing something stupid, Help!
Side note: now that im pumping only once a day my milk is coming out blue tinged, husband jokes its Bantha milk. Its just less fatty.

2023.06.09 02:57 Reasonable-Lab985 Can’t sleep and I need to vent

Hi guys. It’s like 3:56 am where I live. I can’t sleep, and I haven’t been able to sleep properly in a while. I have a massive depressive episode which have been hunting me since the very beginning of this year. I’ve had this depression since… idk, many years. I almost can’t remember what it’s like to feel normal, at least for a moment. I’m always foggy, tired, and irritated, anxious, etc. My mind is a carousel.
The main reason of my depression are actually my parents. I’m 24 yo/ f, I live with my partner 27 yo/ m who I’ve been with for 4 years already.
The issues I have right now: my parents moved abroad during my last year of uni, which was 3 years ago. They actually went on a vacation to Spain, and never returned. As romantic as it sounds, it is actually not at al… they left their house, our house, in the care of my grandmother. The house is huge (2 living rooms, 1 gigantic kitchen, 2 big bathrooms, 2 bedrooms and a dressing room which was initially a bedroom as well + 1 garage which was transformed into a mini gym). My grandma cannot take proper care of the house, so obviously it started to degrade very fast: walls cracked, furniture needs to be changed, there’s an actual massive pipe issue within the house structure, so the whole sanitary system is not working at the moment. The yard looks like a jungle. I live 6-7 hours away from that house so there is no way I can get there and get things done. Even if I had the possibility of going to that house more often, I don’t have the material means to invest, I have a home of my own and bills, and I pay my own education. I live paycheck to paycheck right now with all that going on.
My parents are trying for already 3 years to open a restaurant in Spain, which has been sabotaged by local restaurants and authorities countless times already. Because Spain unfortunately is very racist… my problem is my parents left there and expected to make a fortune. Instead, they ended up in court (they sued the supplier which they bought the building from because they fraud the infrastructure paperwork of the restaurant which put their lives at risk). And also reported local competitors for stalking them and trying to break in and vandalize my parents local. Authorities ignored their charges even when presented with video proofs….
My parents initially tried to force me and my bf to move abroad immediately after they left… we refused, they couldn’t accept the “no” and started to act crazy. They wanted to offer me their apartment they live in, in Spain, as a birthday gift. I accepted it as they wanted. But after a while they took away the gift because, well, obviously what’s the point of gifting me an apartment I can’t use since it’s in another country + they live in there. They suggested to give me the apartment after they start earning money and move out to another place. I suggested, if they really want to buy me a property, to buy one here where I live so I could use it effectively. They immediately started accusing me of wanting their money… somehow…. And assumed I am manipulated by my bf and they even called him and threatened him with violence. They tried to break us up. Now they make no money, and are covered in debt they lied to me about. They told me they borrowed money from family members… but I found out from my grandma that the amount was way way way larger than they told me…. At some point they started calling me when I was working at the office and fight with me through the phone. Even if I told them I was at work, they would keep shouting in the phone. I had to hang up on them multiple times and just block their numbers through the day to keep myself focused from them.
They had the opportunity to sell our house I was talking about previously… when the agency called, they told the broker that the price is outdated and they need to think further to raise it. They didn’t do it because the house would be truly worth more… they did it to: 1. Take somehow revenge on my grandma who’s taking care of the house, because she is also not ok with how my parents behave and how they are handling things, 2. Blame my grandma for wanting their money, even tho a big part from the loan was landed by my grandma to them, 3. Pure greed… my parents love money, always have, and have always been greedy. That’s why they bought the restaurant with landed money, believing they would magically become rich (and they said it with their own mouths). They ended up not selling the house at all in the end… just for the sake of petty revenge and greed. And that’s house is not worth more than the initial price because if someone buys it, that person needs to redecorate and repare some big portions of the house. They could have sold it and cover the debts they have… but they didn’t..
Last month, on 11th April, was my birthday… my parents called me to tell me happy birthday… and scream again their nonsense regarding why I no longer talk to them like I used to. I told them everything that was hurting me regarding their behavior. My mom started crying, my dad was screaming on the background. My mom hang up the phone. After that fight they started lying to the whole family that I do drugs and they are worried… I don’t even smoke or drink, even less consume substances… and the hypocrisy is they actually are both massive weed consumers.
I am in an emotional mess. I haven’t been able to focus on my work since the beginning of the year. Also, I have examen session. So far I have failed 2 consecutive exams and I think I’m failing the one I had today as well…. I can’t sleep well, and when I do I only dream crazy things and have night terrors. I dreamed I was murdered a couple of nights ago. I started taking melatonin, but it doesn’t really help. I keep playing in my heads things my parents said and have done…. I also have past trauma from childhood caused by them. My dad worked as a loan shark, along with a group of friends. They were like mafia in the little town I lived. My dad had issues with gambling, drugs, alcohol, cheated on my mom, beat and rape her while I was at home with them….
I totally feel like a failure, like I am not a normal person. I gained a lot of weight due to stress… I used to look phenomenal when I was about 17 years old. Now I look every year like… older, fatter, more tired. I feel like a failure. I lost my period, due to pcos. I fail my exams… and I can’t focus on my job either. I don’t know what to do at this point. I feel trapped in this reality.
Anyways, it’s a long post… but I wanted to vent.

2023.06.09 02:50 appa-ate-momo A small change to help the busiest person in every unit.

I just thought of something so simple yet so unheard of that I must be missing something.
We all know how every officer who doesn't have a specific job gets fed to the 3 shop. This is largely done because no one knows where else to put them, but it's also to take some of the load off of the S3 themselves.
What if we took one of those extra officers and made them the A-XO instead? I've literally never met an XO who isn't chronically overworked, but for some reason they're also the only staff officer who I've never seen have an assistant.
Is there some super obvious reason I'm missing as to why this couldn't be done?
