Note: All comments that are not entries will be removed from this thread.

Welcome to the Kettleballs Monthly Competition!
This month’s competition is: ABC: Armor Building Complex. Max rounds in 5 minutes.
Last year's ABC competition Last year's results and follow up post
The ABC is 2 cleans, 1 press, 3 front squats. Here's Dan John explaining the ABC
The origin of this challenge is something Dan John wrote here at the bottom of this page. 30 rounds of ABC with 2x24kg in 5 minutes. It is so ridiculous sounding that many assumed it had to be a typo. But not only did Dan John confirm it was no accident, he explicitly told me that he'd done 30 rounds in 5' himself when I reached out to him following last year's ABC April. Because of this feat of inhuman strength, stamina, and refusal to put the bells down Dan's name rightly sits atop our leader board. Will his 30 be topped, will he have company atop Mount ABC? That's what this month is about. Game on DJ.
Now we would love to see someone dethrone him this or get as close as possible but we also want to make this challenge accessible for everyone to participate. So it does not have to be done with 2x24kg bells, heavier or lighter - use what you can. We like seeing people put in work.

Rules:

(Reps * Weight of implement) * (500 / (- 0.0000010930 * bw ^ 4 + 0.0007391293 * bw ^ 3-0.1918759221 * bw ^ 2 + 24.0900756 * bw -307.75076))
bw=Body weight in kilograms
DOTS calculator
Because we are unlikely to see more than 30 rounds, the DOTS x Rounds calculation should eliminate much of the higher rep bias in past contests. But ultimately, it's a competition, read the rules and let's get this going.
The individual with the highest DOTS score will win!
We may also award the individual who personifies the spirit of the challenge best. Meaning if someone gave an incredible effort, took the challenge head on and made it as difficult as possible but did not end up with the highest score, we can recognize that.

Prizes: custom flair and bragging rights :)

(and maybe a message to Dan John himself)

2023.04.01 09:51 strawberryypie A motivational story. I am SO happy! Finally below 100kg!

Hi everyone,
This is a long story so bare with me! If you don't wanna read my whole story than please skip to the part where I give my tips and the things i learned doing keto for a few months now.
I am doing keto since January 9th. The reason I started doing keto was because I really needed to lose weight to be granted help at a fertility clinic.
So in short: We are TTC for almost a year right now without any luck. The last few month's my panic grew because i knew most people would be pregnant by now. So I was looking for some information on fertility clinics. I was 'lucky' i have a good friend who needed a clinic to conceive two times and she was treated at a very very good clinic and was very happy with them. I looked at their website and googled some more and I found out that in the Netherlands you will not be treated with a BMI of 34+ and I knew I was balancing on that BMI.
Also I am diagnosed with a slow working thyroid and diabetes and I was using an insulinpump because that was the safest way to treat my diabetes while TTC. But my allergy for the pumpglue grew. I really had burning wounds under the pump and there was no place at my body that was undamaged. I knew it was time to do things differently and I started eating keto again. I had a few year before with amazing results but I stopped at 4 months because I found it hard socially (eating out, eating with friends/family). But now I had a lot more reason to start again (TTC and my diabetes).
I started at a weight of 107.5 kg (237 lbs) and a BMI of 35.7 My first goal was to go below a BMI of 34 because of the fertility clinic. The first 2 weeks my weight dropped insanely fast and I lost 2.5 kg (5.5 lbs) and I was very happy and motivated. Also, i found out i could do without insuline! DISCLAIMER: Don't stop with your insulin without consultation with your doctor!! But for me it worked. In 2.5 weeks of keto mijn sugarlevels were healthy and I am not using any medication right now. I could not be happier. But then I plateaud in my weight. I lost a few pounds but also gained or stayed at that weight for a few weeks and I was really demotivated. I wanted to see results. But i would stick to the process. I knew I didn't need insulin anymore which ofcourse was a huge win.
My next goal was to be below 100 kg. Which ofcourse, when you use lbs is a lot different. But in kg you can go to a 2 number weight. And that was a huge symbolic goal for me. And this morning I was 99.7 kg and I am so so so happy! I am out of that 3 number zone. Ofcouse I know I will gain a big of weight again and I will fluctuate but I am below that 'magical' number and I am very happy!
So for some motivation for you: - I am almost 3 months keto right now. Eating keto has not been hard for me. I love me some fats and I never had a sweet tooth. If you do; allow yourself so use some sweetners, not sugar but ketofriendly sweetner. That is perfectly fine. Your body needs to adjust and to be honest: I still use some sweetner in my coffee of yoghurt. Nothing wrong with that even though a lot of people will tell you that. You CAN use that. Don't make things to hard on yourself. The keto adjustment on it's own is hard enough.
- Know that the first few weeks you can lose a crazy amount of weight, which is lovely. The hardest part is when your body is getting used to eating keto and you plateau. It just happens. It can be so disheartening but know that you are doing the right thing. It comes and goes in waves. Look at the longterm results.
- As a female, you deal with your hormones your whole cycle through. And I found out that for 1.5 weeks around my ovulation i gain weight. I really dislike it and it makes me wonder if I need to do something different. But I chart my weight through my whole cycle and every time it is the same situation. Like 1 week before my ovulation I gain weight and 0.5 week after my ovulation. After that I drop weight like crazy without changing anything in my diet. It just happens. Also for this I will say: Look at the longterm results. Compare your weight to 4 weeks before and not a week before.
- And the most important tip I have for you is the next one. TRUST THE PROCESS! You are doing the right thing. You are eating healthy. You are nurishing your body. That is the only thing that matters. Eating healthy should be the goal, not a way to get to your goal (losing weight). This mindset will change so much for you because you won't 'fail'. It is easier to say: My choice is to eat healthy and if I achieve that, I am happy with myself. I knew we all want results like losing weight but that should be a byproduct. Because you feel like sh*t if you don't lose weight for a few weeks. But that WILL happen. Don't give up because of that. Think of all the good things you are doing to your body. That is all that matters. The weight will follow. It will! But don't make it your endgoal.
Thank you all for the great advice and tips I got here, you really pulled me through the tough days and you will continue I'm sure. I hope this could be of help for some of you too!

2023.04.01 09:31 irjakr Jarred Vanderbilt plus/minus

I haven't heard anyone talking about this, but I can't help noticing how bad his plus/minus are night after night, so I ran some numbers.
Since Vanderbilt joined the team Feb 12 through March 31 the Lakers are -52 when he's on the floor and +82 overall, so they are 134 points better in 21 games with him on the side line. That's more than 6 points per game! Don't get me wrong, I love his energy and style of play, but can they really afford to give so many minutes to someone who is murdering their winning margin?
Is there something I'm over looking here? I don't think it's a small sample size thing, I just think people are not paying attention because he's so fun to watch.

2023.04.01 09:24 Sinpleton025 [Rifts of War] - Chapter 9

Expedition report from RG-5
Area of recon: Shore of Meilume due east of Galdush
Report carried out by Lieutenant Eric Ross
Report states: RG-5 has encountered an elven outpost on its way to the shore. The purpose of these outposts is to act as checkpoints for the Imperial army as well as to maintain surveillance within an area. The outpost encountered by RG-5 had thirty soldiers guarding it. RG-5 attempted peaceful contact, however, the elves engaged and RG-5 retaliated. All enemies have been neutralized and RG-5 has suffered no casualties and the outpost has been searched. Upon reaching the shore, RG-5 made peaceful contact with a local fishing village. They helped in local affairs, such as hunting down several feral welfen and repairing their equipment. In return, the locals gave them information on the coast south of the North Alston river. There are seven villages between the river and the Alston kingdom border and three more north of the river, which make up the fishing community of the southeast coast of the empire. The southeast coast and shore are patrolled by the Imperial third fleet with its center in the port city of Cheemo. Further information is required.
Other news: The airstrip has been finalized and drones have been sent to various locations. New findings include the official location of the river city Kuruk to the north and Imperial fort Mundus to the west. A large cluster of Imperial soldiers has been seen gathering on the opposite side of the North Alston river. Numbers count between one hundred and one hundred and fifty thousand, including auxiliary troops. No signs of any movement south of the river. Will continue to observe. The CIA has been able to establish a network in the Meilume capital and the leading agent, Edward Garcia, has confirmed that the nobility is attempting to flee the area. RG-3 is advised to speed up. As for the city itself, the population is estimated to be roughly six hundred thousand with fortifications and a force of ten thousand soldiers. No elements of any Imperial spy network have been discovered.
28th day of late yellow season, 3000th cycle
Meilume capital, Empire of light
General Laeroth's words reached the nobility of Meilume and they heed its instructions. Lord Bellon Belus rushed his family and the guard commander followed. Servants carried bags and soldiers formed a formation to escort them to Una, where they will meet with the army that will bring them to the other side of the river and then to the city of Imslone. Bellon was always a father and husband first, and lord second. Nearly two hundred thousand soldiers were slaughtered in less than a moon cycle. That was proof enough that he needed to leave the capital and save his family. Abandoning his city in the face of the enemy was an act of cowardice, often severely punished, but he would take any punishment for those he loved. He would not be like his father.
Bellon walked through the halls and double-checked every room. "Hurry up! Leave anything not of use! Leave the valuables, they are only dead weight!"
"Bellon!", a woman called him.
"Nimriel.", he said.
"Must we leave? This has been our home for cycles. And our family's home for far longer. Leaving it is-"
"It is the only way. The only way for us to live. We must, Nimriel. If we do not, the enemy will take us."
"But Bellon-"
"Think of our daughter, Nimriel. Think of Taria. What if those barbarians breach the walls? After they're done with the peasants, do you believe they will spare us? I will not allow such a thing to happen."
And speaking of the devil, Taria appeared from the corner, wearing a battle uniform with a sword sheathed on her left hip and holding a helmet in her right hand. "I am ready father."
Bellon couldn't say he was shocked too much. Since she was little she used to sneak into the courtyard and train with the guard commander. He knew and let her do what she wanted. It made her happy. But this was uncalled for.
"Stop fooling around Taria.", Bellon said, "This is a serious matter."
"Then take me seriously!", Taria responded, "The enemy is coming and I must be ready."
"You are not staying. You are coming with us to Imslone."
"I am not. I will not commit an act of cowardice and leave my post."
"Your post is beside me. I am your father!"
"I am not a little girl anymore! I have trained with Aego for over a hundred cycles! I am ready!"
"This enemy destroyed two armies and bested two generals! We stand no chance! Our only choice is to flee as far as we can and let the armies deal with them. The best we can hope to do is slow them down."
"You dare doubt our guard like that, father! These soldiers are just as strong as those of the Imperial army and our walls have held off the Rosians and ferals! We can-"
"Do you not hear me you stupid girl!", Bellon's voice boomed through the walls and made the servants and guards stop in their tracks, "I do not care for your illusions! The enemy is real! Wars are bloody and repulsive and not a place for you! You are the daughter of a lord! You are the heir to Meilume and a member of the Belus family! You will cease this foolishness at once and act accordingly!"
This was the loudest Bellon ever had to shout. He could feel his throat hurting. Taria could only feel tears falling down her cheeks as she lowered her head in shame. In truth, she just wanted to prove she was as capable as she claimed. That despite being a girl she could live in the world of men. But her dreams would have to wait. Bellon groaned and shook his head as he kept walking down the hall. Nimriel hugged her daughter and tried to reassure her everything will be alright, but her words fell on deaf ears.
As Nimriel left, someone else walked over to Taria from behind. As he placed his hand on her shoulder, Taria turned around and saw a man she thought of as her second father. "Aego.", she said through tears.
"Do not be saddened, my lady.", he said as he wiped her tears, "Your father said what he said because he cares. You are his only daughter, more valuable to him than this entire world. He only wants what is best for you. And right now, the best for you is to go to Imslone."
"B-But the enemy. What will you do?"
"I am coming with you, my lady. I left my first captain in charge. He will make sure these otherworlders bleed for this city."
Taria hugged him, still shedding tears, "Thank you Aego. Thank you."
Aego hugged her back.

29th of June, 2070
Since the Rift Groups programs have been initiated, soldiers all around have been eager to join. Some more than others, some less. But none were as stocked as sergeant Emma Davis. The second youngest member of RG-1, she was nicknamed 'Trigger-finger' for a reason. Great results in the shooting range, but not much else. Still, when she heard the 'Prodigy' was joining she couldn't control herself. Ever since they left for Alston, she's been clinging to Logan like a leach.
"Sir, how many people have you killed?", she asked.
"I lost count.", Logan answered.
"Sir, why have you joined the army?"
"It's a family tradition."
"Sir, have you been shot?"
"Yes."
"Sir, may I see it?"
"No."
"Sir, why did you leave the special forces?"
Logan didn't answer that one.
"Sir-"
"Emma shut up already.", Jacob said.
"Yeah, I think you're getting on the captain's nerves.", Michael said.
Staff sergeant Jacob Brown and corporal Michael Hoilman, Emma's friends since high school and pretty much the only reason she's not in jail. They've stuck by her side, being her big brothers for years, and kind of grown attached to her. It was like having a little sister.
"No I'm not.", Emma said.
"Yes you are.", Jacob said.
"You hold your captain in quite a high regard.", said Krolm, the leanoid, "Why?"
"Are you kidding me?", Emma said, "He's Logan Connors. All of Fort Bragg and the rangers know about him."
"Are rangers perhaps elites in your army?", asked Kai, the welfen.
"We're rangers.", said veteran sniper sergeant Nick Harper aka 'Bullseye', "We're a strike fast group made for quick attacks and quick action. We're not like the rest of the army that fights on the front lines. We fight in forests, towns, cities, forts, you name it. We hit fast, hard, and take care of our mission."
"Hell yeah we do!", shouted corporal Lamar Jones, the 'Heavy gunner'.
"Interesting.", said Clara, the lepian, "So that's why you have us with you. It makes sense, you don't really need us on the front lines when you got your large cannons and these armored carriages."
RG-1 wasn't just a normal group. It was the only group with sixty-six soldiers, a captain, and twice as many vehicles. This made them quite a force and that was necessary since they were being deployed to the border of Alston. After prince Bodin agreed to assist REC he chose three people who would aid him. Gregor Bachwich, son of Herwin Bachwich, the baron of the border town of Afa. He will be important in establishing first contact with the Rosians. Lieutenant Pallius Blazewing, son of Lor Blazewing, a great military figure in the Opherin army. The Opherin kingdom prides itself on great military history, having fought more battles than any Rosian kingdom or duchy in history. And finally, a youngster named Matheo Calo. There was nothing special about him besides being prince Bodin's personal squire. He's been with Bodin for years and the two became more than just prince and servant. Furthermore, Bodin promised Matheo he would bring him back to his mother in Olinor. Prince Bodin himself didn't choose to come along. His reasoning was that he wants to present himself in front of all the kings and dukes when they all gathered together. One more person did come with them. Ambassador Eugene Anderson. Together, they will establish peace. Or war.
Right now they were on their way to Afa, only several more minutes. In the LAV where the tribals were, private first-class Ethan Williams sat, writing in his journal. He was the youngest and newest addition to the group. Fresh off the academy, he graduated to be a sniper and was eager to learn from both Logan and Nick. But something kept him from them. Next to him sat Carla, who kept eyeballing him and his weapon. Ethan was nervous, he wasn't used to girls sitting near him, or even looking at him, and Carla seemed interested.
"What is this weapon?", she asked.
"O-Oh Ummm, this?", he stuttered, "This is a modified and modernized Mk22 ASR sniper rifle. I know there are older models but my granddad taught me how to use this one. It can hit a target from about twenty-two hundred yards away. In your measurements, that's four leagues."
Carla's ears went up, "Amazing! I bet I could hunt a lot of meat with it."
"Well, um. It takes a lot of skill to use it. I could show you, sometime."
"Oh?", Carla raised an eyebrow and moved closer smiling, "I think I would like that.". She purred a little which made Ethan stutter and sweat. Across from them, Lin watched with her arms crossed.
"What?", Carla asked, "Envious?"
"Not at all.", Lin said as she grabbed Lamar's arm, "I prefer strong males.". Lamar opened his mouth but couldn't say anything. He and Ethan just stared at each other.
"Before your boners brake your belts and that LAV becomes hotter than a pizza oven at Papa John's, I wanna let you know we're almost there.", said lieutenant James Wilson over the comms from the leading JLTV3, the most veteran among them, chosen to uphold discipline.
"Thank you.", said Logan.
"They seem to be getting along.", said ambassador Anderson.
"Indeed.", said Gregor, "I must say, you humans are more strange than you are frightening. The way you use words with one meaning for another. And your expressions as well. Definitely not the savages Canus described."
"I'm glad we could prove that to you. And it appears we are about to prove it to the rest of your kingdom.". They were nearly at Afa. This town serves as a fortified stronghold against the empire should they attack. Its walls were tall and thick, with bastion towers and a single entry gate. It would be difficult for the elves to take it.
"The town currently has a thousand soldiers protecting it. It's usually three thousand, but two thousand went with me through the rift. Most likely on the orders of the elves, my father would never allow it."
"Only three thousand?", James asked.
"Three thousand official soldiers, but should the need arise we can recruit militia fighters from the residents. The town itself has a population of eighty thousand."
"That's a lot of people.", Eugene said.
"Yes. Luckily, it is able to support them, even if barely. The elves aren't exactly sharing people."
"That will all change soon."
As the convoy approached the gate, a ballista javelin hit the road in front of them. The city defenders had assembled on the wall and aimed their weapons at them. While the vehicles are armored, the JLTVs have weak spots a javelin can pierce.
"Hold it!", shouted a man on the wall, presumably the commander, "Present yourselves immediately."
"I'll take care of this.", Logan said as he exited the JLTV with his hands raised, "I am Captain Logan Connors of the Rift Expeditionary Corps! We are from Galdush and have come to make peaceful relations with the kingdom of Alston!"
"Why should we listen to you!?"
"If not me, then how about someone more familiar!".
At that moment, Gregor stepped out of the JLTV3 and, to put it mildly, made the defenders' hearts skip a beat. "Commander Barion! It is good to see you!"
Barion couldn't even speak for moments. His young baron was alive. Against all odds, he made it back. "Y-Young baron!", he finally spoke, "You... You live! How!? And what are you doing with the enemy?!"
"I assure you, they are not the enemy! I will explain everything, but first, I need to ask you to open this gate and let these soldiers in!"
Barion hesitated for a moment, "B-But young ba-"
"Commander, do not make me order you!"
He immediately understood, "Open this gate immediately! Let them in! Someone inform the baron!"
The gate opened and the convoy made it in. Luckily, there was enough room to fit all of them in. Barion and his men, as well as the people, could only stare in awe at what was before them. Truly, people from another world. The commander stepped down and greeted them as well as Gregor.
"Young baron, you have a lot of explaining to do.", Barion said.
"All will be explained soon.", Gregor said.
"Gregor!", shouted a little girl as she ran towards him.
"Elora.", Gregor said as he hugged her, "My little sister. It is good to see you.". Behind her came his mother and father, who at first walked slowly with tears in their eyes, not believing it was him.
"My son.", Herwin said as he hugged Gregor, "By the heavens. You live."
"Mother. Father. I have returned. Let me introduce you to someone. This is Lord Ambassador Eugene Anderson from the land of America on the other side of the rift. He is here to represent his country and the humans."
Herwin immediately walked to him and bowed, "I am Baron Herwin Bachwich. Thank you for sparing my son's life. It is an honor to have you here, Lord Anderson."
"The honor is mine baron.", Eugene said, "I hope we will be able to discuss peace with you and your kingdom."
This confused Herwin, "Peace?"
"I have much to tell you father.", Gregor said, "The prince lives."
Completely frozen, Herwin took a few moments to process that before replying, "He lives?"
"Enemies!", shouted a soldier from the wall. Commander Barion and Logan rushed up the wall. Logan grabbed his binoculars and observed the enemy from a distance. They came from a treeline, their camp was behind it, otherwise, RG-1 would have spotted them.
"I count five hundred.", Logan said, "Various races. Elves, Rosians, ferals."
"How?", Barion asked.
"These are binoculars. They allow me to see things from a distance. Try it."
Logan handed the binoculars to Barion, who observed them for a few moments before putting them on his eyes and facing the enemy. "Incredible."
Barion handed them back but Logan refused, "Keep it, I have a spare. I get the elves, but why are your people attacking you?"
"Those bastards aren't our people. They are traitors and thieves who think the kingdom is done for. So they run to the empire and beg them for forgiveness.". He spat in disgust.
"And the elves. They don't look like the army."
"They most likely were. They call themselves rogues, those who stray from their so-called 'Path of light'. Both of these traitors sicken me."
"Then let us help you."
"Why would you help us?"
"If we're gonna be at peace with one another, we have to establish a certain level of trust, don't we?"
Barion pondered for a bit before answering, "Very well. I am eager to see the army that defeated the elves."
Nodding Logan walked to the edge of the wall and faced his men. "Jones, take your men and mount the machine guns! Davis, bring the ammo! Williams, Harper, get to higher ground and shoot anyone that looks important or a large threat! Wilson, take Green and set up the mortar! Move it, they'll be here in minutes!"
RG-1 immediately went to work. Jones and his men carried the machine guns from the trucks and mounted them on the walls, Williams and Harper climbed up the tallest tower they could find and got into position. Wilson set up the 60mm mortar in the town square.
"I think we should get to safety.", Eugene said.
"You are right.", Herwin said, "Follow me."
Logan got into position with his Mk4 SCAR chambered in 7.62mm. "Commander, I need a favor."
"What is it, captain?", Barion asked.
"If these guys fire arrows, we don't have shields to defend ourselves. You think your men can take of that?"
"Certainly. Get the shields ready! Protect their soldiers!". In moments, each ranger had a Rosian soldier behind him or her with a shield ready. It was time to fight.
The horde moved closer and closer. First, they walked and then picked up the pace as they put shields above their heads. Naturally, the ferals ran towards the wall like rabid animals. "Hold!", Logan said as he gripped his gun, "Wait for them to get closer!". There was one elf on a horse swinging his sword and giving commands. Not for long.
"It's all you kid.", Harper said as he watched Williams aim his shot.
Letting out a breath, Williams pulled the trigger and splattered the elf's brain all over the field. "Boom boom motherfucker."
"Weapons free! Light them up!", Logan shouted as the rangers opened fire on the ferals. The freaks fell by the dozens as bullets pierced their chest, heads, legs, and arms and turned them into cold, dead corpses. The mortar fired at the enemies behind them, who stopped in their tracks, clearly confused and terrified. The rangers aimed their weapons at them and started cutting them down.
"Get some, blueberries!", Davis shouted, "Come closer! I dare ya!"
The few dozen that survived retreated back to the trees. The rangers cheered, but the Rosians didn't cheer as much as they stared in awe. Now they see why the elves lost, these people are powerful.
Commander Barion walked to Logan, "Thank you for the assistance. But I doubt this is the last we have seen of them."
"I know.", Logan said, "That's why I'll have one of my guys scout those trees with a drone along with Lin and Clara.". Logan walked down to the two of them, "Scot! Get over here!"
"Coming!", Scot answered. Scot Green aka 'Mechanic', was the group's engineer. He was also their drone pilot. "Yes sir?"
"I need you to pilot the Fly into those tree lines and scout for the enemy.". The SPFD Fly was a small recon drone invented by DARPA to save both room and energy. Solar-powered and long-lasting battery, coupled with its long-range and small size made it a very useful tool to have in recon missions. "Lin, Carla, you two are also going. I need good eyes and ears over there."
"Sure thing, sir.", Lin said saluting the best she could.
"You two do know how to use a radio, right?"
"Of course we do.", Clara said, "We're not idiots."
"Good. Go.". Lin and Carla ran to the trees as Scott maneuvered the Fly.
The baron and his family, along with Ambassador Eugene walked over to the soldiers. The baron was first to speak, "That was... most impressive. But I must ask. Why peace? Surely you seem powerful enough to take the kingdoms by force."
"Because my people aren't barbarians, baron.", Anderson said, "If peace can be made, then we will do anything to make it a reality."
"I see. And the prince? What does he say about this?"
"You can ask him yourself.", Anderson said as he nodded to Logan who signaled his men to set up a desk and a large screen. "With this device, we can talk to the prince and even see him."
"Amazing.", said Herwin as he eagerly awaited to see his prince. After some preparations, the screen was ready and it turned on. The lights slightly startled the Rosians before the screen was clear and on it was prince Bodin himself. "My... My prince.", Herwin said as he knelt, "It is a miracle. You truly live."
"Baron Bachwich.", Bodin spoke, "Please, rise. I am not before you just yet. This is strange for me as well. Am I correct to assume the human soldiers have arrived?"
"Yes, my prince. They recently just helped us crush an attack from a bandit horde."
"Do you then see why I have chosen to make peace with these people?"
After a momentary pause, Herwin nodded, "I do, my prince. It is incredible to see that a nation so powerful is willing to make peace with its enemy and not subdue it."
"We are not their enemy, baron. The elves and their empire are. This is why they chose to make peace with us. They understand we are just vassals forced to fight. I suggest you hear Lord Anderson out."
As they were talking, Scot called for Logan, "Sir. I have a visual."
Logan nodded, "Alright. Commander Barion, would you like to see the enemy?"
"Yes.", Barion answered, "Show me."
Scot pulled up the video feed on his screen, "This is their camp. I count roughly three thousand. Lin and Carla confirm."
"Where are those two?", Logan asked.
"In the trees."
"Call them back and give me the radio.", Logan took the radio, "Galdush base. Come in Galdush base. This is Captain Logan Connors of Rift Group 1. Do you copy? Over."
After a few moments, the radio spoke, "Copy Rift Group 1. Sitrep. Over."
"Galdush, we have made contact with border town Afa. Upon entry, we engaged a third party, designated rogue elves, and bandit Rosians. Half a battalion attacked us but we drove them off. We confirm the enemy numbers in three thousand, various races. What's the status of our air forces? Over."
"Three air squadrons of Invictus ACs and a Boeing Stratofortress is currently being fueled and should be ready in half an hour."
"Galdush I request a tactical bombing run. The area will be marked via drone. How copy?"
The radio went silent for a few moments before speaking again, "Affirmative RG-1. Stratofortress will be up in the air as soon as possible. Make sure to mark the area. Galdush out."
"Copy that Galdush. RG-1 out."
"What was that?", Barion asked.
"You're gonna get another demonstration."
"Captain!", Carla shouted as she ran towards him. "I have eliminated an enemy scout.", she said as she extended a severed head toward Logan.
Logan smacked his lips before replying, "I see. Get rid of it."
"Yes sir.", Carla said as she tossed the head into a nearby pile of trash.
'At least she's helping', Logan thought.

(Two hours later)
The bandits and rogues were sitting in their tents, trying to plan an attack. The otherworlders were an unexpected problem, but hopefully a problem they could be dealt with.
"Alright, listen.", said an elf, "We'll strike at night. It didn't work last time because there were too many of them, but I reckon there can't be more than a few dozen of them."
"That doesn't matter.", said a Rosian, "I've seen what that few can do."
"You attacked with five hundred to scout their defenses. You were never supposed to win. Besides, we can use the tribals to deal with them. As we are attacking the front, they will go to the sides and strike."
"Are you sure this will work?"
"Yes. Soon, Afa will be ours."
At that moment, an elf rushed into the tent, "Sir, you must come and see this!"
They left the tent and came to the center of the tent. The one who called them pointed upwards into the sky. There they saw something flying. A wyvern? No, it was too big. Its wings didn't flap. What could it be? As it flew over them, something fell from it. Many egg-like things started falling and as they fell to the ground, they engulfed the camp in fire and shook the earth. In moments, the whole camp was on fire and everyone was either dead or dying. The ground was turned into a burning pile of scorched bodies.
If there were any doubts about the power of the otherwolders left, they were long gone now.

(Meanwhile)
Road to Una
The Belus family along with commander Aego and two hundred soldiers were on their way to Una. Taria did not wish to ride with her father and so she rode on a horse alongside Aego. Their hopes were that they would reach Una in several days and then cross the river.
"My lady.", Aego spoke, "Are you certain you should be riding alongside me and not in the carriage?"
"I do not wish to speak to my father.", Taria said, "At least not now."
"I assumed we cleared this matter."
"We have but... I still need time."
Aego sighed, "I understand. Still, you should not hate him for-", he stopped and halted the soldiers.
"What?"
"Something is not as it should be. This outpost is quiet.". The soldiers tensed up. They could also feel that something wasn't right. In a split second, Aego was shot by an arrow in the side.
"Ambush!", Taria yelled out. Suddenly, elves, welfen, and leanoids ran from the sides and the outpost. The soldiers prepared but found themselves overwhelmed by the enemies' numbers. Rogue elves fired arrows at them while welfen and leanoids exploited weaknesses and struck. Still, the soldiers fought hard, making sure the traitors and savages suffer. The enemy numbers were dropping, but not quickly enough. Taria used her training and cut down several rogues before crouching down to help Aego.
"Aego!", she yelled, "Aego hold on! You will live! Please!". She cried as he struggled to breathe. He grabbed her arm and pushed her to the side, just in time for her to dodge a spear from a leanoid. She watched as Aego spat blood before dying, his life leaving his body. In pure rage, she screamed and struck the leanoid in the side. Pulling out her sword she blocked a strike from a rogue, stepped closer, and headbutted him before slitting his throat.
Turning to her left she saw the rogues and tribals dragging her family. "Father!", she yelled, but couldn't help as a rogue hit her in the back of the head, knocking her down on the ground. Her blurred vision faded away as the rogue smiled down at her.
"Sweet dreams, little girl.", was what he said before she passed out completely.

2023.04.01 09:22 Sinpleton025 Rifts of War - Chapter 9

2023.04.01 09:05 njt1986 What would you do with a small but significant lottery win?

As the title says, say you won £2m - it’s a lot of money, but it’s not so much you could live a really lavish lifestyle. So what do you think you’d do?
Edit - seeing as some people seem incapable of comprehending, I’ll clarify.
£2m is not an insignificant amount of money, but IN THE CONTEXT OF LOTTERY WINS £2m would be small, when you think of the £80m/£90m/£100m+ jackpots. That’s why I said a small but significant lottery win.
Small enough that it’s not a huge lottery win, but significant enough to be life changing for 99% of people

2023.04.01 08:56 technogrind How are foreign-country lottery winnings taxed in Japan?

First off, no, I haven't won the lottery, but a man can dream. I know that Japanese lottery winnings are not taxed in Japan. I'm from Canada but have PR here in Japan. If I were to win the lottery in Canada, for example, while there on a visit, how would I declare/how would my lottery winnings be taxed in Japan? (There are no taxes in Canada on Canadian lottery winnings) Would the winnings be taxed as income or a gift? Or would they be subject to some other kind of taxes?

Episode 5 - non elimination twist
They should have really sent Paige to “win them over and stay safe” (lmao)
By sending Gerry they basically handed him as a number to George and he was instrumental in flipping Matt and that alliance dominated the merge.
Not sure why the heroes didn’t consider sending Paige and throwing the challenge to keep her safe. Probably changes the entire game and was most pivotal moment.
That’s what happens when Sam Webb tries to strategise and drive a vote.

2023.04.01 08:32 Fenrir555 [BATTLE] Tripoli Ravished; Rhodes Down

1508

The Knights Hospitaller lead a series of raids against the Ottomans in a mix of galliots and frigates. They were focused on the Aegean territories and more importantly, the shipping therein. There was also a small force under the command of Andrew Barton who struck out at the coast of Morocco, but the great distance needed to sail out and back as well as the small force limited its effectiveness to gather wealth. The Greek and Ionian coastlines are targeted with great effectiveness by the larger Knights fleet, and the Ottomans had not yet prepared a defense force. However, eventually an Ottoman response force was able to defeat and repulse the pirates off the Thracian coast. The Knights also struck out at shipping that looking to end up in Muslim port, and that meant that multiple times they attacked often Italian merchant shipping as well. While they did not enslave the sailors like they often did for Muslim ships, they were still happy to often take its cargo. This would help the Hospitallers return with fat pockets.
Knights Hospitaller gain ƒ335,221 in revenue

March-May 1509

Barbarossa Blues

In the reaction of both the general Italian Wars and in particular the Barbarossa Brother's despoiling of Elba fleets across the Mediterranean Sea had gathered in activity. First, the Spaniards continued their general annual activity throughout the Mediterranean, one of the few naval forces constantly projecting power throughout the Sea. They had already gathered in January, and moved to assist the French and Papal fleet that was gathering in Lazio to remove the Muslim pirates from the Tyrrhenian Sea and follow up with an attack on the haven of Tripoli. Meanwhile, the Barbarossa Brothers had prepared three fleets to strike deep into the Western Mediterranean. The first Muslim fleet was lead by Oruc Reis, attempting to raid the Tyrrhenian Sea directly into the Spanish and French-Papal fleet. However, the latter fleet was having significant logistical and organizational issues as the complicated structure and disparate forces took its toll. The Spanish had prepared earlier than anyone else though, and were able to quickly respond to Oruc's thievery after only a few successful raids. Greatly outnumbered, Oruc was forced to eventually retreat back to Djerba after losing his galleass in a battle against a large group of frigates. Oruc had originally wanted to fall back to another secret base, but there were major issues in its creation and the fear of a retaliation force greatly superior to his own forced his deeper retreat. Additionally, the Papal-French fleet was well aware of the Barbarossa's base on the island of Gorgona. As they torched the base, the second and third fleets struck out to Algeria to take port and attack Spanish shipping on the other side of the Mediterranean. However, the third fleet was caught by Spanish patrols in the region to begin with, and forced to return and rendezvous with Oruc's remnants in Djerba. Only the second fleet was able to make it to the Zayyanids and strike. A force of Egyptian ships and soldiers also make their way into the pirate bases of Tripoli and Djerba, hoping to eventually strike out as well.
At this point, the final fleet to attack Tripoli had set off. The fleet itself was massive, combining the substantial Genovese fleet with the Papal-French force and the Spanish who sailed separately, along side them. Many of the galleys were full of marines and well-paid veterans of the Italian Wars which had just recently died down. The Barbarossa fleets in the area with the Egyptians attempted to slow down the attackers and capture or sink stragglers, but the opposing force was much too massive and concentrated to allow them to make any decisive action. Oruc himself was forced to flee Tripoli days before the Christian fleet arrived, knowing to stay was a death trap. The Christian fleet dropped multiple forces off in different coastal locations both near and far from the haven itself, while preparing a main landing force. Galleys and galliots used ship-based artillery to damage the lacking defenses of Tripoli itself, greatly damaging fortifications at the cost of a fair few ships. The main landing goes smoothly, and the converging attack quickly leads to the fortress and town of Tripoli being brutally sacked. Though Jacopo V of House Appiani, ostensibly the organizer of the reprisal raid for Elba, tried to limit the barbarity of his allies and soldiers it was to no avail. The army taking it was much, much larger than the location could supply or its population was and communication between all the different soldiers and camps made organization downright anarchic at times. As the fires of the first week of looting crackle in the night sky, the Spanish then bid their farewells claiming that they have achieved their goal of helping destroy Tripoli. While the Genovese and the Papal-French fleet remain, the Spanish sail off to Djerba where one of the other major pirate havens remain. While limited to just the Spanish, a similar story is heard there as the Spaniards lay siege. Once again artillery strikes and numerical superiority lend itself to a bloody, but successful series of assaults. Back in Tripoli, Jacopo hoped to find many of his subjects who had been captured and put in chains by the Muslim pirates. By the grace of god, he found his relative Beatrice d'Appiano d'Aragona who had been kept as a prized prisoner. Many of the other captured slaves had been solved off by the time of the return attack, and the razing of Tripoli had killed off many of those who had remained. The lack of supplies and dangerous weather forced the Papal-French and Genovese fleets to return to Italy and Naples to regain supplies, do small repairs, and plan for the future.

Aegean Escapade

The Christians had not gathered the only large fleet in the Mediterranean. The Ottomans had deployed their massive fleet in full force, having been recently rebuilt in one of the only arsenals around. Alongside the deployment of their fleet Sultan Bayezid had called upon an army of tens of thousands to serve as marines, besiegers, and soldiers for hire. The first prize Bayezid had set his eyes on was the Genovese colony of Chios, a relatively small but economically important island. The island was the only location suitable for the growth of mastic), worth its weight in gold. Many involved on Chios itself had their entire lives based around the growth and trade of the good, and Bayezid was happy to threaten the security of such a lifestyle. In this, he had gained the loyalty of the Governor of Chios on behalf of Genoa. Lacking any response from the Christian world, Genoa herself included, that secured a hope of victory and security in the wake of the Ottoman fleet Bayezid found good news when the fortress and town of Chios had surrendered the moment Ottoman troops landed. There were a number of other fortifications established on the island, and many of them either through zealotry or a lack of trust in the word of the Muslim fought to the end. This meant Chios had not been fully secured or conquered until the second week of April. With Tripoli about to be set to siege at that time, the Ottoman fleet then prepared the attack on the true prized jewel Bayezid sought - Rhodes.
The island fortress of the Knights Hospitaller was one of the most formidable defensive structures anywhere. The Knights Hospitaller had maintained a constant schedule of improvements and additions to the fortress, in recent particularly in ways to counter the development of siege artillery from both land and sea. The Knights had a constant cheap labor source - the slaves that their income was also dependent on - and in turn developed their own teams of masons and engineers. Its harbor was protected by a massive iron chain and a recent improvement had doubled the length of the dry ditch. Tenailles were created along both the inner and outside rings of internal ditches, meant to dramatically limit the ability of attacking forces to utilize numerical superiority. They had also established their own artillery force to be used defensively, and the battlements necessary to compliment them. The Ottomans vast strength on both sea and land outside of the fortress, however, meant that they were able to easily land massive groups of men who encamped on the island. The Ottomans offer a no strings attached surrender offer, which is immediately refused by the Knights. The Ottomans return with the digging of their own defensive ditches and earthworks to compliment the siege artillery brought to bear. They had also brought with them one of the largest collections of sappers ever seen in history, meant to undermine the massive fortifications with specifically targeted locations to essentially create weak spots where there otherwise is perfect balance. The back and forth nature of the attacker and defender on Rhodes had meant that the Ottomans were repulsed with relative ease only twenty-nine years ago. Their commander, Hersekzade Ahmed Pasha, aimed to return with their own new developments to challenge the bastion.
This experience lead Ahmed Pasha to adopt a more cautious policy regarding the siege. Hoping to utilize the highly trained and numerous sapping companies accompanying his army, he limits the artillery usage at both land and sea and is careful regarding the use of assaults. The Ottoman artillery is focused on the Hill of St. Stephen where they have the best angle against the Posts of Germany, Spain, and Auvergne. Each Post was a unique "tongue", or in this case an ethno-linguistic group of significant standing within the brotherhood of the Knights Hospitaller. They were each therein their own fortress, often with their own secondary or even tertiary walls, from the shared primary exterior. It was here that progress would be made up until the month of May, when events elsewhere would come close to Rhodes. The Spain Post has a large breach caused by the clever use of land mines on a specific location continuously, something impossible for the defenders to repair mid-siege. Post Germany also has significant wear and tear from effective cannonfire, but Ahmed Pasha is hesitant on its usefulness. Post Auvergne has struggled significantly, with Knights defensive cannoneers wrecking havoc on portions of the Ottoman siege camp. The Ottomans had also set up smaller groups against Posts England and Provence, where the Knights defenders have been able to retaliate in great effect. The Ottoman fleet in many ways serves as a mobile wagon train, shipping in massive logistical efforts to keep the island army supplied and in high spirit.

June-December 1509

The Battle of Rhodes

The Genovese had every intent on attacking the Ottomans and assisting the Knights in defense of both Rhodes and Chios. They needed support, however, to hope to meet the strength of the Empire. Pope Martin VI had lent the Papal fleet, and the French theirs, to save the Knights as well. The Knights fleet still existed in harbor as well, capable of sallying out to assist the Christian fleet in a potential battle. It was then decided that a recovery force would be deployed, in the aim of defeating the Ottoman force in full. There were already troubles brewing as they set off, however, as they soon found themselves entirely dependent on the good will of Venetian ports beyond Naples. They could not make the careful but effective long sail to the non-Venetian Aegean ports, Chios and Rhodes, for the Turks controlled access now. This would continue to be a thorn in the side of the Christians.
In the middle of June, the Christian fleet sprawled itself out against the Ottoman fleet who prepared a defensive position alongside the coast of Rhodes on their left flank. The Christian fleet held a very small advantage numerically in galleys and frigates, and an equal share of galliots, but they were greatly outnumbered in the important supply and transport bergantins. The Ottomans may have a smaller force of galleys, but they had a much superior collection of war galleys, forged in the Ottoman arsenal. They also included a sizable amount of carracks and two galleasses. Both sides have brought on their decks large collections of professional soldiers meant to support the marines in boarding actions.
The two sides go into formation in different styles. Additionally, the Etesian Winds were lighter than normal and at the back of the Christian fleet, giving them some help on the attack. The Genovese and their allies go into a straight line, organized loosely by ranking local commander. The Ottomans oppose them in a Y formation, with the outstretched branches intending to be able to envelop small gaps and prevent retreats while the rear line reinforces. Shortly thereafter, under the scorching sun, cannonfire rings out as the lines approach the first melee. While the artillery in use is still under much need of development and improvements, the Ottoman cannons are able to destroy a large portion of the Genovese bergantins upon approach. This would carry into the initial clash as the Ottoman left and center flanks were able to push into the now V-shaped formation of the Christian fleet within the top half of their Y fleet. The right flank, itself approaching the beach of Rhodes, was nonetheless repulsed by the Knights own fleet. As the melee develops and initial casualties start to escalate, the initial results turn on their head. The Ottomans put extra pressure on their right flank to stem the initial loss and in turn was able to push deep into the Christian fleet, taking a number of the Christian galliots. This came with a loss of support in the center and left, where the Christians had pushed the Ottomans to the point that their right flank was at risk of being cut off. This devolved quickly into a stalemate itself, both sides locked in very bloody combat. This changes when a force of Italian venturieri, commanded to do so by a Perugian Baglioni, landed on the beaches of Rhodes that had been untended by Ottoman defenses focused on the citadel of Rhodes. They were able to outflank the Ottoman ships, as the battle at sea acted in many ways as an extension of the land beside it. This maneuver was able to put pressure on the Ottomans once more, though the smaller size of the Christian fleet was now making itself felt to Andrea Doria and the other admirals. Even though the beach landing had so far been a success, morale within the Christian fleet was not strong against the Turkish tide. This showed itself as the battle waged on and on, where the Christians continued to slowly and painfully gain an advantage. The issue came when a particularly effective deployment of the Ottoman galleasses with a handful of carracks in the center of the Y formation straightened out much of the initial battle line. Both sides at this point had called upon all of their reinforcements, and the Christian fleet was now noticeably smaller though both were much smaller than they had started. The center push could, if not remedied immediately, threaten to potentially cut the Christian fleet in half. Simultaneously, the Ottoman siege camp at Rhodes had gathered a raiding party that had defeated and captured the landed Italian venturieri. The Christian admirals were able to manage an organized fight that consolidated their forces without losing en masse, and they enacted heavy damage to their enemies. Their soldiers, however, eventually cried out for release and were forced to give the day up. The Christian fleet was once again wholly dependent on the Venetian ports of the region and what they could, and wanted to, provide. This allowed the Ottomans to hound them until they were out of the Aegean. There was no attempt to return, with much of the cohesion lost and the Ottomans in an even stronger position.
The siege of Rhodes raged on in the back as well. The brothers Knights had impressively prepared a new set of earthworks had been built in the location of the earlier land mine breach in Post Spain. News was worse elsewhere though, as Post Germany and Post Auvergne have recently had multiple portions crumble against sustained Ottoman bombardment. Ahmed Pasha then ordered the first set of assaults in the siege on those two Posts. Post Auvergne ends up being a bloody affair for the Ottomans, as thousands of Azabs die in the breaches by small groups of Hospitallers. While there were also thousands dead in Post Germany, there the Ottomans had been able to hold a position within the walls. The Hospitallers were forced to give up the first spot within the primary walls.
This situation worsens for the Knights as a strong corps of Janissaries then move into Post Germany, where they kill a force of defending brothers and then make another breach with mines on the second set of walls. Assaults are also held on Post England and Post Auvergne, with the first assault establishing a beachhead before being repulsed by a follow up attack. Post Auvergne shares the same fate, the second time the Ottomans have failed to take it. Post Spain is assaulted, and with the Knights only having earthworks remaining, are easily pushed back. The Ottomans now hold the entirety of Post Spain and Post Germany, but all other Post have either held or are untouched. Morale within the Knights in terms of the strength of their beloved citadel is unbothered. Their morale in terms of the belief that their storehouses will remain full and the Ottoman fleet dispersed by the monarchs of Christendom are not as strong. Ahmed Pasha has successfully taken portions of the citadel, something not yet achieved. Victory is not entirely at hand yet though, and the siege has eaten a terrible cost to the Empire. A cost that would become all the more painful when news hits from Konstantiniyye...

Earthshakes in Konstantiniyye

While philosophers immediately began to ponder the meaning of the earthquake in the capital, the reality was the city was horrendously damaged. A few thousand immediately died in the quake, with the neighborhoods of Galata, Buyukcekmece, and Izmit suffering hundreds of destroyed homes and mosques. Portions of the Wall of Constantinople collapsed and the brand new Bayezid II Mosque had its dome completely destroyed and foundations damaged. Only the Hagia Sophia remained mostly intact. The Sultan's own sickness included, the future certainly does not bode well for calm and serenity for the Osmanoglu. Expectations are for the all the issues of 1509 to be resolved quickly and without fail, lest the patience of some wear thin.
TL;DR
  • Majority of Barbarossa fleets destroyed or forced to retreat
  • Tripoli razed, heavy casualties to Christian forces, Oruc Reis flees
  • Djerba also falls to the Spanish, Hizir Reis raids from Algeria
  • Christian fleet primarily lead by the Genovese engage the Ottoman fleet
  • Ottoman combined fleet and army had taken Chios and set siege to Rhodes
  • Ottoman fleet wins with heavy loss of ships and men
  • The citadels of Rhodes are under severe threat with the Ottomans near the interior, but has not fallen yet
  • Konstantiniyye has been hit by a major earthquake, massive loss of human life and urban development as well as defenses. A certain bridge has been a casualty too

2023.04.01 08:12 Trickysolpol I don’t know how to connect with people.

All through middle school and high school I was very much a loner. I attribute this partly to moving around so much and being homeschooled up until grade 7. I desperately wanted friends and to be accepted, and to some degree I was successful as there were people I sat with and joked around with in class, but none of my friendships ever went beyond school hours. As a result, I became very lonely, and started feeling invisible. When I moved schools for high school, my feelings of loneliness were greatly amplified when I lost the few connections I had. People were friendly to me, but I struggled to find meaningful connections. Coupled with bullying from my brother at home, I came down with a case of depression and had suicidal ideation. I constantly wondered if anyone would notice or care if I died, and what the point of sticking around was. There were a number of instances that fed into my perception of invisibility, and that persists even though I’ve overcome my depression.
Social anxiety frequently haunts me, which has lessened over time in some ways, but worsened in other areas. I used to be unable to do things like ask for ketchup or ask my boss questions necessary to do my job right. I’m able to do “necessary” tasks now, but there’s a significant number of times social anxiety still wins out, and it almost always does in cases of potentially making friends. (A mini war wages over the seemingly innocuous matter of giving a stranger a compliment).
Due to my social anxiety struggles, I ended up turning to online (writing) communities for friendship and skill development. Through those, I’ve gained skills that allowed me to make friends in college, and I’ve formed multiple strong/close friendships over time, but I find none of those friendships endure. Online, I’m very charismatic and I attract a lot of people who want to befriend me, which has given me a lot of confidence to step outside my comfort zone, yet my strongest friendships have always stemmed from online communities. (I think that’s fairly typical these days since it’s easier to open up to people when the potential consequences are lowered).
I typically grow interested in someone and then “obsess” over them. (Spend lots of time talking/listening/doing activities together)We grow extremely close in a matter of months, sometimes even days, and then I “lose interest and pull away” (as described by a former friend of mine). As a result, we part ways and they either feel hurt and abandoned, or they let the friendship fade away as I do. (I know I could reach out and talk to them, but the more time elapses, the less inclined I feel to do so, and I take perceived rejection very personally.)
It’s not my intention to hurt anyone. In fact, I despise being a source of pain and I’ve broken up with a partner for that very reason. I can’t pinpoint where exactly I’m going wrong, and how much of this cycle is me versus the kinds of people I befriend. I suspect it has something to do with the way my brain functions. I have a tendency to hyper-fixate on assignments, hobbies, and so on. I’ll work on a drawing and ignore hunger panes for hours until I get to a part I’m satisfied stopping at. Part of this is a drive for productivity. I’m very creatively orientated and I hate “wasting” my creative mood, so the longer I can remain in it undisturbed, the better. (Not really, but often I find the payoff worth it). I have troubles switching between different tasks as a result, and I like to min-max my time as much as possible (like watching lectures while I fold laundry, studying or listening to readings at work via audiobook). It seems like I do it with people too. And when the “honeymoon” period ends, when I stop paying such strong attention to them, they get hurt and the friendship fades. I definitely start feeling antsy if I spend too much time doing unproductive things like gaming, and that extends to my friendships, and is likely the cause of the perceived interest wane, but I see it as a brief shift in time priority and a period of social recuperation. (Fulfilling my creative/introvert needs instead of the social ones). I see it as a subtle shift and quickly become unaware of how much time I’ve spent doing xyz, and by the time I notice, the damage has already been done.
However, I had one enduring friendship that lasted for a good few years. It was fraught with fights and misunderstandings, but I was invested in becoming a person worthy of this other person’s friendship, and we made it work way longer than my typical “obsessions”. I’d never connected with someone so deeply and in such a fulfilling way, and it was everything I’d been craving from all the previous friendships. However, things spiralled as they usually do. My friend felt abandoned over a misunderstanding, and it kept turning into a bigger and bigger issue. The guilt I felt over hurting her began turning into resentment, and I lost my motivation to keep talking with her. I care about her, but a part of me shut down, and still remains shut down, while another part of me keeps thinking about her, and all I’ve done wrong, and how this cycle just seems so endless.
I have a tendency to numb my emotions as a mechanism against pain. I’ll often say things like “I don’t care” until I’m no longer in pain. It continually gets worse and people have started to notice that I lack compassion, (when I was younger I had far more compassion), though I still do empathize strongly. It makes me come across as uncaring and cold, which I’m sure doesn’t help my whole connecting issue.
A long time ago I tried therapy, but that went so horrifically that I feel no motivation to try again. It wasn’t the therapist’s fault either. They were doing their job and being supportive and kind, but every session had me mixed up, frustrated, and ready to cry (as a result of the anxiety), so I gave up on it. (As a broke student, it’s not in the budget anyway)
I’m tired of repeatedly ruining friendships and hurting people. I’m hoping some fresh perspectives might help me understand myself and this issue more.

Pitching an idea for a return to new capenna
So like, mom has kind of burned me out on the main multiversal magic storyline, so i'm retreating back into funky little gimmick worlds and thinking about what you can do with them. namely: new capenna.
so here's the idea, a two set block, first set entitled "New Capenna Blues" and a follow up set i haven't named yet.

Story

The block takes place some years after the events of mom with the city being rebuilt and overseen by an angelic government. The Families are still present but with the double whammy of the angels returning and the phyrexian invasion, they've mostly gone into hiding until today.
Progress on reconstruction has been going smoothly so far, but the inciting incident of the Brokers' prophecy of the halo supply running thin is coming to pass soon resulting in the city feeling some serious economic whiplash as the city's poison is starting to run thin. The angels meanwhile are unable to attend to that because of some "returned threat" that demands their full attention, leaving the citizens malcontent and starving. Despite their immense casualties, Falco Spara calls a meeting between what remains of the families and they decide that it's now or never: they're going to usurp the angels, use magic to turn them back into statues and reclaim their dominion over the city.
As a result the first set is a spectacle of the Families being brutal and ruthless as they fight to survive in a city that has long since outlived the need for them.
The riveteers leverage the desperate working class to make an army of brutes with nothing left to lose. The cabaretti use the last of their resources to create the illusion of wealth and opulence and draw people in with blindingly bright displays of luxury. The brokers finally invoke their hundreds of contracts to create an army of mind controlled debt slaves. The obscura go from mere information brokers and petty crooks to proactively infiltrating and sabotaging the angel's power structures. and The maestros unearth weapons from Capenna's ancient past that were used to stab the angels in the back during their heyday.
That's the A-Side plot that makes the first set. The B-side is me wanting to heavily emulate the huge paradigm shifts that ruled two-set-block stories from Oath of The Gatewatch to Hour of Devastation by maybe making a slight retcon of the events of mom. I want to make it so that Atraxa survived having a building dropped on her but went dormant when New Phyrexia phased out, leaving her to chill at the bottom of the city until a certain someone arrived: Archangel Elspeth.
Elspeth was originally only there to check on how her home plane was holding up but her presence on the plane somehow reawakened Atraxa who in turn sent out a homing beacon to all the dormant phyrexians on the plane. With no way to get back to Elesh Norn and trapped in a city full of the beauty and divinity that she so hates, she starts compleating people in secret and trying to spread norn's old gospel but is unsuccessful due to most of the population being halo addicts.
Being the resident expert on kicking phyrexian ass elspeth volunteers to be the one to vanquish her thinking she was alone only for her to swarmed by phyrexians while atraxa interrogates her about what happened to norn and the nature of beauty and the existential atraxa moments we were denied in story.
Eventually as the families' reach the height of their power and the angels forces are running thin between fighting the phyrexians and the skyrocketing crime rate, their numbers become so sparse that hardly anyone can afford any halo anymore despite the maestros' zealous hunting and petrification of them.
As a result of this Atraxa is finally able to compleat people again and spread the holy gospel of oil and show everyone that beauty is heresy and the only glory to be found is in phyrexia.
The families realize how much they fucked up, come crawling back to the angels, and start liquidating assets to overcome the phyrexian threat...if capenna has a god they are wondering how this is the third fucking time this has happened.
Story ends with atraxa having her well deserved break down over everything norn represented and that moment of vulnerability allowing elspeth who somehow escaped the captivity she somehow got into to begin with to strike her down but also take pity on her, so rather than kill her atraxa gets her wings cut off and is exiled beyond the walls of the city where she makes friends with the slumbering Old Phyrexians.
Happily ever after yeah? Well, not really, as the conflict finally destroyed New Capenna's economy, dissolved the five families, obliterated most of the angel population, and not to mention reset all the progress they made during the reconstruction. As a result of this, much of the remaining population is forced to leave the walls of the city and start anew in the desolate remains of Old Capenna.

Mechanics

In my opinion, all magic stories can be as mid as they want so long as the stories told on the cardboard are fun. In order to do that I've come up with new mechanics for each of the families for the first set and unaligned mechanics for the second set along with flavor justifications for each of them.
Set 1 Mechanics
Maestros - Legacy
Old Blood Elite 2B
1/3 Deathtouch, First strike
//
Instant - Legacy 1B
Target creatue gains first strike and deathtouch until end of turn. (Cast this portion only from your graveyard, then if it would be put into your graveyard put it at the bottom of your library instead)
Using a frame that's similar or the same as the adventure cards from eldraine, a legacy gives a creature a second life as an instant or sorcery but only from the graveyard. This is to show two aspects of the maestros, first their classic mafioso vibe with respect for their forebears who made the organization what it is today and their secondary role as museum curators that collect stuff from different parts of Capennas history, say, digging up dead things? Eh? The put on the bottom of your library portion i want to highlight because aside from distinguishing it from similar effects which put it into exile, it also communicates the idea that because of the creature's legacy, rather than being forgotten it will always remain at the back of your mind.
Obscura - Smuggling
Scouring Glass 1U
Smuggle 2U - (You may cast this card face down as an aura with "Enchant Creature" and "Enchanted Creature has +1/0 for 2. Turn it face up at any time for its Smuggle cost)
Whenever creature deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.
The change of Obscura's M.O. from passive resource hoarding to proactive shenanigan-causing is strong on this sort of strange combination of cipher and morph. Combat damage has long been associated with assassins and saboteurs and i've been mulling over for the longest time a way to do face down equipments and I think i've hit a homerun here.
Brokers - Conscript
Protector of The Indentured 2W
3/1
When cardname dies conscript 2. (Put a creature card with mana value 2 or less onto the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. It loses all abilities.)
Turning a creature with its own identity into a faceless stat stick is a highly versatile metaphor for the brutality of war, but in our case it shows the brokers finally wanting their end of the deal on their mind control contracts. The only potential issue I see with this mechanic is memory issues but I think that can be solved easily with a cutout similar to what they did with prototype in Brother's War pre-release. I am now envisioning a questing beast with its rules text completely covered up by a strip of paper embellished in a similar way to police tape with the text "Property of The Brokers"
Cabaretti - Prosperity
Adored Performer 1G
2/2
Prosperity - As long as your life total is at least 5 greater than each opponent's, cardname has +1/+1 and vigilance.
I will admit this is more like a RW mechanic than a RGW one but the flavor win was too hard for me not to go for. The Cabaretti are more powerful when you are (or at least appear to be) absurdly rich in comparison to everyone else and creatures are more eager to come to your aid.
Riveteers - ...Blitz?
Now, I could make a new Riveteers mechanic, but honestly I think Blitz is still perfect for the Riveteers. They're all about throwing a bunch of live fast die young expendables at your problems which works very well in a situation where many are desperate and mad about their situations. Also the fact of the Riveteers not having changed much since there last appearance indicates how they're kind of a constant in this city no matter what happens. "We are this city, down to its bones" after all.
Set 2 Mechanics
Ascend/The City's Blessing
Now, New Capenna is a setting that's focused on a single city and it has angels that you could say bless the people. For me, City's Blessing was a flavor homerun before New Capenna even saw print. I'd go so far as to say that when we get New Capenna's official return to the limelight, it's gonna be there. Plus, between citizens and treasures the set was already prepared for it.

Halo Tokens
Artifact - Clue Treasure Food
3, Tap, Sacrifice this token: Choose one
-Add 4 mana of any color
-Gain 3 life
-Draw a card
One of the biggest wastes of potential in the original New Capenna set in my opinion (which is saying alot) is not emphasizing enough how valuable Halo is to these people. The original set tried to have them lumped in with treasure tokens, but I think this is more accurate to how I think they are presented in the story being equal parts a status symbol, an addictive substance, and a magical healing balm. Therefore I made them I highly desirable and flexible kind of token to add to our growing list.

Characters

Shorter section than the others but I still want to give my wish list for how characters' roles may change during the story.
Ob Nixilis
I don't know about you, but I think mob boss Ob Nixilis ended way too soon, and besides it seems that this is the only thing the bastard man has going for him right now. Luckily there's a dangerous power vacuum that needs to be filled. With both Xander AND Anhelo dead, the Maestros are without a leader. Despite the fact Ob was responsible for the former of these deaths I could definitely see him pulling political strings to convince the patriarchs of the Maestros he's at least a necessary evil.
Jetmir
Even though he was only injured the last we saw him, we got a whole thing from this guy about how he's getting old and New Capenna is rapidly changing around him. I think it's fitting for Jetmir to die or at least retire as head of the Cabaretti.
Jinnie Fay
No sensible mob boss adopts a daughter off the street. They might take in proteges but they don't do daughters, that's how you "go soft" as they say. For Jetmir? The writing is on the wall: He's training an heir to his empire and from what we've seen of Jinnie so far she's a perfect fit. All I can say now is that she'd look so fly with demon horns.
Ziatora
Give her more than three spoken lines god dammit. Let her monologue about her darwinist philosophy or cackle as she watches her subjects beat the shit out of each other for scraps. Give us something dammit!
Atraxa
If Ziatora didn't exist I'd say she's the biggest waste of potential on this list. You mean to tell me you gave her a mental breakdown decapitating angel statues, going ballistic over concepts of human beauty, wanting to impress her mommy with glorious creation, and you gave her an off screen death? Well, obviously since we never saw a body that means she's alive. In which case a phyrexian angel is the perfect antagonist for Capenna. One grappling with the loss of the mother of machines, only awakened because of say powerful angelic prescence on the plane?
Elspeth
To be honest giving her superpowers kind of makes it a little hard to write about her as anything other than a macguffin though given that Atraxas was supposed to be like the head honcho of the phyrexian army and elspeth was getting at the very least slowed down with enough phyrexians swarming her I could see them getting locked in stalemate while Atraxa tries to work out there issues.
Kaito Shizuki
Idk why but I just like the idea of Kaito in suspenders.
A New Capenna Native Walker
Title. Elspeth doesn't count because she's basically from everywhere and nowhere. I want a planeswalker with a funky forgeddaboutit accent and I'm still confused why they had to put Vivien in the SNC story when that would have been infinitely funnier.

Random Card Ideas

As this wishlist post comes to an end, one last thing that's been living rent free in my head is the idea of The Families' End cycle. An antithesis to Ascendancies, they depict the crime families at their lowest of lows, possible on the brink of collapse. I don't have ideas for mechanics, just art.
Riveteers' End
A factory going up in flames in the background as workers with soot covered faces walk away carrying their tools.
Cabaretti's End
An empty bar, with all the chairs upside down on the tables and a figure at the door in a travelling cloak, closing the door behind them.
Brokers' End
Detectives in a dusty office, emptying filing cabinets and putting contracts through the paper shredder.
Obscura's End
A cracked crystal ball, reflected in it are scenes of obscura agents being arrested en masse.
Maestros' End
A painting of Xander--among other valuable art pieces--gathering dust and cobwebs in a closet with only a single strip of dim light to illuminate it.

2023.04.01 08:06 KeyboardAquarior [TOMT][Movie][1990s or 2000s] A movie about two boys winning the lottery and one of the boys betrayed the other and told his family that he won it by himself

I have seen this on tv in the past but I didn't get to know its title. During the first part of the movie, I think they were faced with big bullies but avoided them afterwards. When they realized they won the lottery later on, one kid told to his friend to keep the ticket (or cash) first and they will meet again tomorrow or something. The next day, the other kid betrayed him while having the cash prize (or maybe still having the ticket) despite the first kid still defending the fact that both of them actually won it. The family of the other kid was given a party or a gathering to treat him for "only winning the lottery". The first kid is also there and told his family members that they're supposed to win them both, but they didn't believe him and dismissively thought he's only jealous of his friend. That's where I stopped watching the movie on tv because I think one of my older siblings started switching the tv to another channel.
