2016.09.14 23:21 ggh0st A Game of Ark. Westeros inspired medieval role play.

Enjoy Ark but need something new? Enjoy Game of Thrones? Enjoy creating cool castles? Want to be a champion in tournaments? Feel the lust for power? Or the need to be free? Your in the right place. A Game of Ark is a lite roleplay server in which we have divided "The Island" Map into sections, and created a Game of thrones like governing system. Although you do not have to be a fan to enjoy this server!

(Also, if you could bring a fruit from your island, that'd be great! I'm trying to expand my collection. If not, its totally fine!).

Akane Kinoshita, a female college student, faces the absolute worst situation when she ends up breaking up with her boyfriend after he has an affair with a woman he met playing an online game. While relieving her stress by rampaging through the open hunting grounds of an online game, Akane spills everything about her heartbreak to “Yamada”, a player she met by chance who happens to be in the same guild. “I don't care,” is his curt reply. But when Akane gets a makeover and joins an offline event to get back at her ex-boyfriend, she hears those dreadful words again. And that was Akane's fateful encounter with “Yamada”─!

2023.04.02 11:57 Apex_Demon Some thoughts on the recent announcements from a long-time ARK Player

So I'll start this off by saying these are just my opinions on the recent announcements. Not here to make you agree with them or chastise you for disagreeing with them, I just sort of want to get my opinions and feelings on this out in case devs actually read these.
I've seen a lot of varying opinions about the announcements, and as I definitely understand a lot of the outrage, a lot of the excitement, too. I've played only about 4k hours of ARK (not as much as some of the Official Players here I know) but I've been playing Unofficial since the game first launched way back when level 30 was the default standard for all creatures, and the Island had no biomes and the grind was much worse than it is today.
I've been a server host, played unofficial mainly though, and currently, I have a small private server I haven't touched in a few months. When I play, it's also with mods (default building system is still not good) and there's a lot of things I enjoy about mods.
With that out of the way, let me get into my actual opinions.

ARK 2 Delayed

The Bad
I think literally everyone saw this coming. I was expecting late 2023, early 2024 but late 2024 is pretty rough. I think the worst part of this is that they have said "NO GAMEPLAY AT ALL" this year.
While I do understand development takes time, asking people to buy ARK 2 before we've seen any gameplay at all just feels...wrong. I get it's more of a bonus, but at $50, it feels like I'm paying $40 for ARK 2 and $10 for ARK Survival Ascended (ASA) because it's (sort of) a game I've already played.
The Good
I actually do like that ARK 2 seems like it will be very different from ARK 1. While initially, I hated this idea, the announcement of a "Next-Gen ARK" in the form of ASA (with the promise of future updates, better modding support, and future content updates beyond just remastering old maps and dlcs) actually lessons the blow of how different ARK 2 will be. I have my next-gen ARK in the form of ASA, and with ARK 2, it feels like I may get two ARK games that are different, but still charming in their own ways. Still wish ARK 2 was more like ARK 1/ASA, but I'm more...cautiously excited, then straight up disliking it now.

ARK: Survival Ascended

The Bad: There's... a lot of bad here.
Price Point/DLCs: $50 for this, in my opinion, is fine. (Let's assume in this scenario that we get gameplay of ARK 2, since I've already stated charging this much for the game we haven't seen yet feels wrong for the game we already played). The reason I'm fine with $50 for ASA is because it's not just a remaster, it sounds like they actually will be doing more than just porting it over into UE5, which is pretty huge. Balance changes, new items/structures, all in the great UE5 package with hopefully better performance (please also don't be 400 gigs...) sounds well worth the price if I also get to play and try ARK 2 (assuming we get gameplay, which we aren't, but again, this is an example of if we did).
However...making us pay $40 for ALL the DLCs again, in addition to having to wait for them to come out is... bad. Really bad. "Kind of fucking bullshit" bad. I get wanting to charge more for the effort you put into making this and building it up again, but... to those of us who have been supporting this game for almost 8 years, this feels really, really bad. Personally, I wish if you already owned the DLCs, you could at least get some form of a discount on the bundle.
Official Servers being Shutdown: I'll be honest. I don't care about it, and to me, it's not a big deal at all. The writing was always on the wall there for me the instant they announced ARK 2. This happens with many sequel games, and I know personally I am not invested in it, so I don't care.
That being said, I know many, many people do care. Many people have only played on Official Servers, for much longer than I have, and have spent countless hours, days months, and years, making that their main objective. And to know that there seems to be no thought put into transferring that data... that hurts to see even for me, who literally doesn't care at all about Official.
I think if anything, an effort should be made to address at least why the data can't be transferred. Obviously, files aren't 1 to 1 in a new engine, but even if there was some way to record what players had which items/dinos, and then add that information to cross platform/progression for ASA, I'm sure many would be happy with that. Honestly, I can't speak for anyone on Official, but me, personally, I wouldn't give a damn about my house/buildings on Official, I would strictly be carrying about the loot, and my dinos, since those things can be irreplaceable. A base can always be built, destroyed, or re-made, and materials can always be farmed again.
But some people spent a long time farming loot in this game and breeding dinos, and it feels like an extra slap in the face on top of the bad that's already there.
The Good: While the bad is really bad, the good is also really good. I love everything about the idea of ASA, aside from the negatives above. New features, new engine, fixed bugs from the plague that is the old UE, new features like dynamic water and weather, and a lot more has me very excited about ASA. While I'm disappointed that the upgrade is not free, I think I can say it's justified based on what has been promised. Not just a game ported to UE 5, but also new content, changes, balancing, and more, makes me say that even though this is a game I've already played before, I'm excited to try a "new" version of it.
I think a lot of us don't really realize how old ARK actually is, and how bad and buggy the engine we're on now is. Sure, a lot of us know it's buggy and the code is bad but... after actually seeing other games in UE5, and having looked into it for future projects of my own, it's actually insane how big the difference will be for ARK.
Crossplatform play and progression is also huge. I have many friends who have wanted to try ARK, but aren't able to play it on their PCs, and many who have it on PC, but don't play it often because they'd rather use their console in their bed. That part's cool.
My real excitement though is the potential for new mods. Building templates is huge, and UE5 has some great tools for modders, so I think even if mods end up being required again, it seems like it'll be easier than before and the scope of things modders can do will get even better.

Final Thoughts

I'm pretty excited for ASA. I do plan on buying it, and by extension because of the bundle, ARK 2. I do wish there was some form of discount for long-term ARK players who have dedicated their time with this game, especially with the DLCs. I know many people aren't happy with many of the decisions made in regards to ASA, and I hope Wildcard actually listens.
To those of you who aren't excited for ASA, won't be purchasing it, won't be purchasing it because of ARK 2, etc, I definitely understand, and I hope Wildcard goes back on some of the decisions they've made, or at least, offer solutions to why people are upset. The very least they could do is address the concerns at all.
Me personally, I just really like dinosaurs, really love good dinosaur games, and I really like when those games can get upgraded in more ways than one.

TL;DR

ARK 2 delay expected, not showing ANYTHING AT ALL is really bad, Ark: Survival Ascended seems exciting and cool, the price point is sort of understandable, but DLC repurchasing feels bad. While I am very excited for the game, I do see many of the problems people have with it and the recent announcements, and I wish Wildcard would address them.

2023.04.02 11:36 trolledwolf ER Lore Q&A "Revelations" Translated - by Sabaku no Maiku, Part 1

Hi everyone, a popular Italian content creator called Sabaku no Maiku just had a Q&A about the lore of Elden Ring (base game for now), and I decided to translate the entire stream for the international community, until the youtube video comes out, at least.
For context, Sabaku has been a creator specialized in From Software's games for a long time, with heavy attention to the lore of the game, and especially to correct popular misinterpretations that are due to mistranslations or other creators not doing enough research before publishing videos on the topic. He worked with translators to get the most accurate possible interpretation of the original japanese meanings, and has been working tirelessy over the last year to do so for every description and dialogue in the game.
Over the year, he also gathered tons of lore questions from the community to answer in this stream and I'm here to translate it from italian so that everyone can enjoy it. Of course, I will only be translating the Q&A parts and I will be skipping over anything that is not lore-related from the stream. Even still, the stream was 2 hours long, so this is going to be a long one, and I'll probably split this into multiple parts, as some answers are actually quite long and the stream itself was also split into multiple parts, and will continue next week. Reminder that these info only come from the base game (no DLC yet) and only involve lore that we know for certainty (or almost), so no wild speculations here. Let's begin:

Q: What's the Elden Ring?

A: The Elden Ring is the most powerful Rune of the Lands Between, and it's central to the natural Order of the world. It's the pillar onto which nature's living cycle leans, in its life, death and change. However, the structure of the Elden Ring can be modified by whom is in its possession, that is the God of this world, and, through the removal or addition of Great Runes (the element that compose the ER), it's possible to modify the "law" (from the japanese "ritsu" , "law" or "rule") onto which nature depends.
The Elden Ring came to the Lands Between at the dawn of times, with the arrival of a golden meteor sent by the Greater Will. This meteor contained a Beast, that later transformed into the Elden Ring we know. It's not clear how this metamorphosis happened, but we can imagine it happened thanks to a process similar in concept to what we see happen to Goldmask, Dung Eater and Fia: After death, these tarnished gave birth to their own runes. It stands to reason to believe that the beast became the Elden Ring after its death and the creature we fight at the end of the game is all but a manifestation of its soul and its spirit world. Something we see with the Ancestral Spirit too, despite the two processes being fundamentally different.

Q: What are Runes?

A: Runes are the physical manifestation of Grace, which flows through the Lands Between and inside the eyes of its inhabitants. Runes share a lot of similarities to the Souls from Dark Souls: In fact, just like them, runes represent the core of the laws of life and of the universe itself. Specifically, they embody the power of Life, which can be used to empower our attributes. This last characteristic is fundamental to us Tarnished, but it also shows why Runes are so special in the Lands Between and why we, as Tarnished, are different from its inhabitants. Having runes inside means being blessed by Grace (which is the highest point of one's life) and, as a result, it means having superior qualities to regular human beings. This explains why the majority of the inhabitants of the LB are taller than us.
As a matter of fact, coming back to the similarities from Dark Souls, just like the most powerful souls can make you way stronger, possessing a greater Rune means having an higher density of Grace inside, and therefore more strength and vitality. This underlines how Runes, Grace and "Life" are deeply connected concepts in this world.
The similarities with Dark Souls don't end there though, as Runes can also manifest properties linked to their owner, like the Great Runes of the Demigods, or the Mending Runes, showcase. Or, in the opposite case, a Rune can also maintain an imperative principle even without its owner, remaining unchanged, like the Rune of Death (or the Lord Souls from DS, and, specifically, the Dark Soul). It's obvious how Runes are to the Elden Ring, like Souls are to the First Flame.
That said, there are also substantial differences between the Runes and Souls. While Souls were deeply connected to the concept of flame, Runes are instead linked the the concept of Gold and, especially, of a Sprout. In fact, runes are able to produce branches, leaves and plants in the world of ER, and this phenomenon showcases the "power of life" mentioned in the description of the Golden Rune (3)
Miyazaki himself, in an interview from Edge Magazine, mentioned how the image of a plant (and more specifically a tree) was, in his opinion, perfect to showcase a natural law that binds all, the process of birth, growth and death
"In Dark Souls, the theme of the Tree was already present, but Fire was the more prevalent visual element of the title. For Elden Ring, the Tree is obviously more noticeable from this perspective (...) This tree, with its shining golden leaves, fits my idea of something that physically represents the world (...) Since the tree is something that lives, grows and in the end, withers and dies. This image fits very well in the role of something that can impart Order, control those rules and make everyone abide by them. Since these will also grow, change and lastly wither and die. (...)" - Hidetaka Miyazaki, Edge Magazine
(EN: translation from english to italian to english again, so the wording will probably be different from the exact words of the original interview, which was also already translated from jp).
Therefore, Runes manifest plants and roots, spreading life and all aspect which derive from it This phenoment happens even in case a Rune is connected to a specific aspect of life. This is the case of the Deathroots (which generate Those who live in Death), which are nothing more than the ramifications of the Rune of Death, spread throughout the roots of the Erdtree when Godwyn the Golden was buried under it.
The second difference is that, in DS, souls are fundamental to maintain the life of a body, to the extent that, if removed, the body dies forever. This isn't the case for Runes. In fact, we have multiple examples of being which aren't "blessed by Grace" which, despite the absence of runes, live normally like anyone else. For example, the Albinaurics, the Omens and, most importantly, the Tarnished. Therefore, runes seem to be a sort of "bonus", sort of how it was in Demon's Souls: In this title from 2009, sould weren't the core of life, but instead of thought, and, if removed, wouldn't kill you, but it would remove your ability to think, making you a wandering zombie at the service of demons. We can imagine Runes carry out a similar function, in that, despite not being linked to the concept of thought, they could be the manifestation of life in its purest and crystalline form, sort of like a "code" that every living being possesses, from animals to people. You could speculate, that runes are not only the power of life itself, but also what ensures the evolution potential of living beings, making them more powerful, vigorous, and adept to improvement. That which "gave life its fulliest brilliance" (or from japanese, "That which soundly (?) brightens the flame of life"), from the debut trailer.

Q (from Chat): Then why do you get runes when you kill Albinaurics and Omens?

A: The reasons are multiple. The first is, of course, the subtle line between gameplay and world building. But there's also the fact that, since the Shattering, runes were spread throughout the world and were absorbed even by beings that aren't "blessed by Grace" and therefore aren't normally born with runes inside them. So basically, they "stole" those runes, and couldn't really do anything with them.

Q: How can we be sure that the Elden Ring is the basis of life itself? Couldn't it simply be something that the Greater Will sent to the Lands Between to sort of "mark" its territory?

A: Indeed, in the first days of the community speculation, it was a very popular theory that the Elden Ring was a kind of parasite, sent from the Greater Will to colonize the Lands Between. The theory became so popular than many fans treated it as anything but confirmed. Indeed, this theory can result, to a less discerning eye, as something quite plausible, considering how Elden Ring deals with cosmic elements and space creatures, and therefore can lead to believe that the title should be read as a sort of medieval game fused to sci-fi. The term used to refer to some of the divine forces at play, the "Outer Gods" (which we'll talk about at length later), immediately reminds us of the concept of Lovecraftian divine beings (even in japanese), and reinforces the idea that the game should be read as a mixture of fantasy and science fiction.
However, the more the delve deep in the descriptions and the esoteric narrative of the game, the more we can see that the theory not only cannot be confirmed, but even finds itself quite misleading if confronted with the objective info that the game gives us. Specifically, there's varioud proofs in game that underline the importance, in ER, of the Lands between, not as a tool of control, but as the core of everything.
First of all, there's the Shattering. The moment the Elden Ring was fragmented, not only did the Golden Order crumble, but so did the entire island. Both the Two Fingers and Melina speak about the necessity of having an Elden Lord who could bring everything back together, because life in the Lands Bewteeen literally went downhill. If the Elden Ring was only a mere instrument of the Greater Will, its shattering wouldn't have represented such a terrible event for everyone. In fact, people don't normally die, and, with the rupture of the system, there is no more stability in the law of nature.
Moreover, there's also a few info that Ranni's quest gives us, to take into consideration. While she explains to us her plans for a new world where we become her consort and the Elden Lorn, the Lunar Princess mentions to us that she intends to keep the Order, and therefore the Elden Ring, far away from this land "even if life and souls are bound to it" (translation from japanese).
I shouldn't be reminding you how Ranni is by far the most opposed figure to the control exercised by the Fingers, vassals of the Greater Will, but despite that, she doesn't speak of destroying the Elden Ring further. She decides instead to take the ER and bring it with her, moving far away from the Lands Between, exactly because it's not possible to permanently cut the connection between the first Rune and the life that it generated. Rather, the ones who got the Lord of Chaos ending, have seen exactly what happens the instant we decide to burn everything down... It's clearly not possible to separate Life from the Elden Ring.
Furthermore, there is another clear evidence of the importance that the Elden Ring has in the workings of the Lands Between: If it wasn't such an important fulcrum of the natural order, then the act of removing the Rune of Death from it shouldn't have had such impactful consequences right? And yet, under the Golden Order, death doesn't exist and it's not seen as a natural process anymore (if not as a way to "return to the Erdtree"). This happens, again, because Destined Death was removed from the ER. Some could counter saying that the influence of the Elden Ring only started after this hypothetical parasite came to this world, but even this claim finds no validity, because the game itself shows us that the Elden Ring has existed in the Lands Between since the age of the ancient dragons, way before Marika and the Erdtree, when Placidusax was Elden Lord. And yes, Placidusax was an actual Elden Lord, not a "metaphorical one".
In short (EN: lmao), all the evidence that we gathered brings us to the conclusion that the Elden Ring isn't some kind of alien force, but the core of the Lands Between and the origin of every civilazione and creature that ever resided here. For further evidence, just look at the dialogue with Hyetta and the very first trailer, which showcase very well the role of the Elden Ring with statements like "that which commanded the stars and gave life its fullest brilliance" ( in japanese, "that which rules the stars that flow and soundly(?) brightens the flame of life")

Q: What is Grace?

A: Grace is the blessing of life which was brought to the Lands Between in ancient times, when the Elden Ring was formed from the golden meteor. Like we said before, Grace and Life are deeply intertwined concepts: In the world of Elden Ring, life finds it maximum manifestation in the so called Grace, a golden energy that, regardless of the form it takes, ensures life is at its highest peak. In fact, in japanese, the name for Grace is "shukufuku" (EN: in the document shown in the stream, the kanji for this word was also included, for those who are curious), which translates to "blessing" or "celebration of joy" - therefore it's not by chance that Melina tells us the golden light which guides us in our adventure is "the blessing of the Golden Tree" in japanese (and in the english adaptation). See? Runes, Grace and Life are connected.
Albeit it seems like Grace has spread far an wide thanks to the Erdtree's offset, Grace is harbored in almost all the inhabitants of the Lands Between, even the ones in opposition to the Greater Will, like the Nox. This is showcased by the fact that every mob, when killed, releases runes to use as an upgrade or as currency, and the fact the scales of the ancient dragons, despite preceding Marika's Order, were already covered in gold. (We also have all the golden eyes of beings that would normally be hostile too)
Besides taking the form of Runes, Grace can also manifest as other forms, like the droplets of golden dew produced by the Erdtree and the beams of golden light that guide us at the start of the game. It should be noted how, inside those streams, there's small golden leaves which dance in the air, more evidence to how Grace in the LB and its power of live are linked with plants and leaves.
It's never explicitly stated in any description, but we can imagine how whoever becomes the divinity of the Lands Between - that is to say, whoever inherits the Elden Ring - exercises also a direct control on Grace. In fact, it was Queen Marika to take Grace away from us, making us Tarnished, therefore, logically, we can assume it was also her that gave it back to us (exactly like she promised to, judging from her "spoken echoes")

Q: Wasn't the Greater Will the one that gave us Grace?

A: That's what the Two Fingers believe, but following the events of the game, we discover that the Greater Will is at last out of the game: in the sense that, like the introduction itself narrates, the Greater Will has abandoned the Lands Between and its inhabitants, leaving everything and everyone behind. The idea that our mission is blessed and wanted by the Greater Will is a belief which was matured by the old Two Fingers in the Roundtable Hold, who think the divine entity still watches over the world. However, the moment we reach the Erdtree, and it negates our access, the Two Fingers, shaken by the even, try to contact the Greater Will to get an explanation. For the remaining duration of the game though, they will never get an answer, which is pretty indicative to the fact that the Greater Will has been totally absent throughout the course of recent events.
Gideon Ofnir himself, in the description of Lord's Divine Fortification, has understoon how both the Fingers and the Erdtreee, have at last felt the weight of time and the Shattering, and that there's nothing holy left in our mission. In the end, we're trying to save what can be saved, in a stranded world.
The game, unfortunately, never confirms if the Greater Will can actually affect Grace or not, but what we know with absolute certainty, is that the divine entity is long but gone and, as such, should be excluded from any speculation post-Shattering. However, we know of another entity able to control Grace: Queen Marika, who, though reduced to an empty and broken shell, is still the Goddess i charge. It's not by chance that, in some Sites of Grace, we Tarnished can still notice some of her echoes, and comprehend them thanks to Melina.
It's therefore very likely that the Grace which guides us back in the Lands Between, "accross the fog", is exactly and extention of the Queen's will.

Q: But if Grace is guided by the Queen, then what are her objectives? What's Marika's plan?

A: To this question, unfortunately, we can't answer for sure, since what we know of the Eternal Queen is just fragments of information, spread here and there between descriptions and official sites. Some believe our action are part of a greater plan imagined by Marika herself, and this isn't completely wrong, in fact, Grace has called us back, which means the Goddess wanted our return in the Lands Between.
Without mentioning the fact that, judging by the echoes that Melina perceives in the Queen's bedroom, Marika sounds pretty determined in her choice to break the Elden Ring. Let's not forget about our smith Hewg, forced by Marika to forge a weapon which, by her will, would have to be able to kill a god like her. With this in mind, it's likely that Marika had some kind of plan.
However, let's not take for granted the idea that the Queen had a clear mind in her actions, on the contrary... In the Cinematic Trailer, Ranni tells us that after the Night of the Black Knives, Marika "was driven to the brink", - in japanese, Ranni even says, without wasting words, that she could have gone completely mad for the death of the son. We should also remember that the plot not only involved the Prince, but also other unmentioned demigods, (from the official Bandai Namco site).
Therefore, we cannot assume her actions weren't simply driven by her folly. Judging by her echoes, Marika seems to be fierce and ruthless in preserving her own interests, between her empire and her family. It's not absurd to think, then, that the psychological weight and the sense of failure in seeing her prized son die, together with other demigods, all members of her family, and the complete crumbling of the Erdtree system thanks to the Deathroots, must have driven her to madness.
If we consider as true the theory that the Gloam-Eyed Queen was also one of the demigods children, then Godwyn might not even be the first of her offspring to have to be buried by the queen's own hands. Moreover, it shouldn't be underestimated how heavy it is to be the one and only Goddess of the world, which, albeit granted with incredible power, still has to shoulder a great weight: many Empyreans will try to overtake the throne, betrayals and internal struggles... maybe even the removal of the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring might have played a role in damaging her mind, since as long as the Elden Ring resides inside her, as a matter of fact, she IS the Elden Ring, and therefore, by modifying it, she might have also influenced herself. It's not by chance that, in the intro, Marika was already shown with small cracks on her arms and shoulders.
*In fact, Marika doesn't seem to gain anything from her action, seen as it's apparent that, even after repairing the Elden Ring, she still remains an empty stone corpse. She never benefits from the new Order that we create, and only remains as a crumbled shell, literally, of her former self. *
In short (EN: again, lmao), our guidance could just be what remains of the lingering will of a mad queen. Maybe that's why many, like Roderika, refer to her as the one who cursed us. In that sense, we would find ourselves in this situation because of the whims of a mad goddess who, the moment something started to deviate from her plans, decided to bring everything she herself created, down with her. Maybe, that's also why, when Giden found the "last will of the Queen" he was shocked by it and found it an "unacceptable ending".
A goddess that was "way too human", both victim and executioner, who sacrificed herself for herself, cursing our entire world.

Q: But didn't Marika desire to challenge the Greater Will?

A: Not necessarily. This too, is one of the very first theories that was spread during the first few days from release, but, like the idea that Grace is the guide of the GW, this theory too does not align with what the game itself shows us.
Despite there being evidence that the gods and the empyreans have to be ruled by some sort of system by the Fingers, the game never shows us any instance of Marika, or other Empyreans, being forced to do anything. Queen Marika is only ever shown to take decisions by herself, from declaring wars to anything that breathes, to removing Destined Death from the Lands Between, to taking Radagon as his second consort. All of these are choices Marika made by herself. Marika's freedom reaches such a level that the Goddess was even able to shatter the Elden Ring, with no one able to stop her, and was only punished after the event. These don't look like the actions of a prisoner of her position. If anything, it seems like, as long as there's an Order in the Lands Between, the Greater Will leaves quite enough freedom to govern to the God in charge.
There's also those who believe that the Greater Will is in conflict with the Outer Gods for control over the Lands Between, but here we also need to remember a crucial detail for the comprehension of the divine dynamics of this work: Among the Empyreans, there is a candidate to the title of Goddess, Malenia, who has the Scarlet Rot inside, an Outer God in absolute opposition to the Golden Order. And yet, the Greater Will didn't seem to carte at all. In fact, we know that you become an Empyrean by being chosen by the Two Fingers, and therefore it's as if the Greater Will itself, through its vassals on land, chose Malenia as a candidate. In short, it doesn't look like this Greater Will is such a tyrannical being, as people like to depict it.
The only case where we see the Greater Will react with wrath towards the actions of someone is in the case of the Nox, whose "high treason" (from the japanese description of the Fingerslayer Blade) was the attempt to kill one of their Two Fingers. The same thing Ranni was trying to do (in which case she also committed "high treason"). So Ranni would have probably also be punished the same way, if she had tried to kill her Fingers before the Shattering. It seems, then, that the Greater Will intervenes (or used to intervene before abandoning the world) only when its emissaries are in danger. But apart from this specific case, it doesn't seem to interfere with any of the choice of the God in charge, as long as there's an Order in place, keeping things together.

Q: What is a Tarnished?

A: A Tarnished (in japanese called "asebito" which translates to "Faded") is an inhabitant of the world outside the Lands Between who doesn't harbor any Grace within. The Tarnished were born when Queen Marika removed the Grace from her first consort, Godfrey, and all of the warriors who fought alongside him during his conquests. When the last enemy fell, and the Lands Between found themselves under the complete authority of the Golden Order, the King and his men found themselves without Grace, and the Queen commanded them to leave the Lands Between and reach a far away land, to "look for conflict, to live and then die". It was then that the first Tarnished were born, and, with the promise that Marika would, one day return their lost Grace and the possibility to come back to the Lands Between, they would sail towards the outside world, to begin what was called "The Long March" (with a ship that would, unfortunately, get stranded and sink in the sea). The adaptation is not clear as to what this exile was for, but the original japanese text gives us some more clues: In fact, the Long March is originally called "chousei" , term which can be translated as "long military expedition" or "great military expedition".
So, despite never being stated explicitly, the purpose of the Long March was, very likely, to conquer the lands beyond, and expand the dominion of the Golden Order outside the Lands Between.
The Long March brought the Tarnished to expand into these lands, creating new countries and societies, like the Badlands ( "land of the barbarians" in japanese), Kaiden, the Lands of Reeds etc...
Unlike in Dark Souls, we know very little of these outside lands, but, thanks to the Confessor set, we know that a church was established outside the Lands Between, which is dedicated to spreading the teachings of the Two Fingers (while at the same time casting away the Prophets who spoke around a certain flame who would one day burn the Erdtree). We can say, then, that the objective of the Long March, was all in all achieved.
For obvious reasons, every single Tarnished is a descendant of the first Elden Lord and his army, so much so that the description of the Warrior class (in the character creation menu), explicitly tells us that all Tarnished were once warriors without distinction. That said, in recent times Tarnished became Astrologers, Priests, Sailors, Nobles and more. We can safely assume then, that the lands outside of the Lands Between are inhabited and populated.
After the Shattering, Grace was returned to the Tarnished, giving them a specific mission. Repair the Elden Ring and become Elden Lord. Like with Dark Souls' Undeads, guided by an alleged prophecy, towards "their destiny", the Tarnished will reach the Lands Between to reclaim the throne, finding themselves in need to challenge the demigods who, currently, possess the fragment of the Elden Ring. But the Tarnished still remain hated and despised in the Lands Between, seen as inferior and persecuted in the worst of ways. Which is why, their mission was never going to be easy.

Q: So why did Marika take Grace away from Godfrey and his soldiers?

A: Like everything that involves Marika and her plans, unfortunately we don't have answers for certain but, to dare try and make a theories, we could think that the main reason why Grace was taken away from Godfrey was for the fear that it would somehow be stolen by potential enemies. In short, Marika didn't want Grace to fall in enemy's hands.
From the gifts we can choose in the character creation screen, the so called "Keepsakes" (from japanese "katami", meaning "memento" or "souvenir") we have the possibility to chose a "Lands Between Rune", which, besides giving us a very important description to understand the nature of the Tarnished, subtly remarks how runes are physical objects, which can be carried around (even tho in our case, we carry it in our bodies, since we are Tarnished). This showcases how Grace can exist outside the Lands Between, and, if we take in consideration the amount of runes we found on corpses or inside tombs, Grace can leak outside the bodies of the dead. With a similar phenomen, whos says that Grace wouldn't have spread outside the Lands between, and be absorbed by the ground, plants, animals and other creatures? Queen Marika already has a lot to think about and definitely doesn't need a "second Land Between" to care for. Grace is hers, and hers alone.

Q: Then why is there a Rune among the starting Gifts? Doesn't that go against what was just stated?

A: Not necessarily. In fact, it's possible that this Rune was an excess of Grace which, by chance, landed in our hands after we were given life by it again.
Or maybe, and an answer that I personally prefer, it's more likely that it's effectively a leftover of Grace, that us Tarnished, as the protagonist, obtained outside the Lands Between. In the original description of the Sacred Tear item, it's explained that these are the "vestiges of the Grace of the Golden Tree, kept safe in the churches of all lands". Taken at face value, we could take for granted that the description references the churches of the Lands Between, but the description never mentions the island itself: Who says that "all lands" doesn't refer to the outside world too? In fact, those are churches dedicated to the teachings of the Two Fingers. So who's to say that these goblets containing Grace weren't the metaphorical Bible of the "missionaries" mentioned in that description, brought to the "savage" inhabitants of the lands outside to show them how good, generous and beautiful the Golden Order was? In the Cinematic Intro, we are shown a Statue of Marika inside the catacombs where the Tarnished were buried. Moreover, from the Keepsakes in the PC Creation Menu, we can choose items dating to a period following the exile of the Tarnished, like Miquella's Bewitching Branch, or the Golden Seen. Golden Mask himself is a Fondamentalist of the Golden order, a doctrine which was born only after Godfrey's exile. All this to showcase that the Lands Between and the lands outside did have dealings, trades and cultural exchanges.
It's therefore plausible that these items ended up in the outside world through some kind of commercial relationship or by pure chance (like the Golden Seeds mentioned before, who reportedly "flew out from the Erdtree, scattering across various lands" after the Shattering, or, like the small description of the Keepsakes mentions, were "stranded" from the Lands Between towards the lands outside.
Or maybe we're discussing fluff (EN: and I'm translating it, what am i even doing) and, for all we know, we could have just gotten them after our arrival in the Lands Between (even though the fact that they are called Keepsakes suggests that we've always had them with us, since at least before our deaths and subsequent revival).

Q: So what are the Lands Between? And what is found outside of them besides the Tarnished?

A: The Lands Between - making another comparison to Dark Souls (seen as good ol' Miyaz like to repeat himself) - i the Lordran of Elden Ring: a legendary place, where the most ancient civilizations reside, and the the inhabitants are blessed by the Grace of the Erdtree (and therefore the Elden Ring). A sort of Eden, for those who are graced. It seems to be separate from the rest of the world, by a "sea of fog" which surrounds the island and probably makes it pretty difficult to find for whoever wants to reach it (EN: big Valinor vibes from the Lord of the Rings canon) - and as such, i'll have you notice, could make it seem like the call of the chosen Tarnished to be "divine", to the eyes of the inhabitants of the outside world, since these would be seen as the select few who have the chance to reach this magical and legendary place that is the Lands Between, land of Gods and Demigods.
To close out the question, I'd like to leave to you the original text describing the Lands Between: In fact, from japanese, it's called "hazama no ji", which roughly translates to "the land which stands inbetween" or "the land between things", from which the obvious english name. However, "hazama" can also be literally translated to "interstice" (EN: a "narrow gap" or "crack" for those like me that have never used this word in english) which would represent an acute reference to the Interstice in Berserk, ("hazama no sekai" in japanese), which is the dimension between the physical plane and the astral plane. So if we wanted to throw ourselves into some wild speculation (EN: i lied), we could theorize that Elden Ring's Interstice is so called since it's the connection point at which the physical world and the cosmic world meet, since it's the place where apparently meteors and cosmic creatures tend to fall. But this is just speculation!
[ This is the point of the stream where Sabaku realizes it's going to be impossible to finish the entire Q&A in one stream and hilarity ensues. This is also the point where I'm splitting this translation into two parts, so stay tuned for part 2 ]

Hey all, I’m travelling in new zealand and decided to pick up a bow for rabbit hunting and possibly goat, tahr and walibi. I was thinking a 40 lb recurve should do the job? Also any advice is welcome if anyone is familiar with the area south of the south island of new zealand, good spots for hunting or target practice. Thanks!

2023.04.02 09:03 Righteous_Fury224 Sympathy for a Succubus - Meridiana’s Story. Part 6

Ahh, dear reader, hello there! So lovely to see you once more... well figuratively speaking that is… or is it?
After all, I am exceedingly well versed in The Arts. Maybe I am watching you at this very moment, with Clairvoyance or perhaps a Scrying Spell or maybe an enchanted object like the good old fashioned Crystal Ball? The Magus has one you know…
Just teasing… or am I? …teeheehee…
Anyway, this latest instalment comes to you courtesy via a Voice to Text application my Magus recently acquired for me, as he said listening to me speak aloud while typing is too distracting for him. I find that interesting considering his immense mental discipline yet understandable at the same time. After all, extoling ones inner monolog to an uncaring audience would be tedious to experience. Hmm… I’ve just thought of a new torture for the souls of the dammed, specifically for writers who think they are better than everyone around them. How ingenious of me!
In any case, I would prefer to distract him in other ways, mark you.
I also must say what wonderfully inventive creatures you humans are! An application of mathematical code, the base language of reality. It is very much like a spell in its function and nature I would say, that it allows my phone, yes the Magus got me one, to record all I say and transcribes it into neatly typed words on its electronic pages. It’s like having a monk-scribe in your pocket! Unquestionably wonderful!
So as I relax in my fabulously hot, luxurious scented, oiled bubble bath, I can easily regale you with further tales of the adventures I have had thus far on this wonderous blue and brown spherical rock that is third in line from our star. And I do not have to type with two fingers either, which is a massive bonus let me tell you!
If memory serves… ahh yes, we had just returned to the car where I saw a sign of my Magus’s humour on display in the form of his licence plate.
I do have to admit dear reader, I was indeed highly amused. He knows he’s going to hell, he just insists that it be on his terms! I love it! Such confidence, such audacious willpower.
That is exceedingly… stimulating for Succubi.
Ok dammit, it makes me tremendously horny, and I’m not talking about the ones on my head either you know! We are incredibly lusty beings, us Succubi, after all.
I was already in a highly ‘excited’ state when we got to the car, so much so that I had to use my Cell Adjustment Psionic discipline to tremendously dull down my inflamed senses as I did not wish to leave the tell-tale mark of my inflamed passion on the lower back portion of my new dress and also not on the car-seat when I sat back down in the vehicle.
Ahem…
After a few moments, which caused the Magus to glance up at me with a slightly puzzled expression, of standing outside the car (he had no idea nor cared… hmmph!) I opened the door and folded myself back inside the vehicle and resumed my seat. I later learned that I could have mostly avoided this… embarrassment… by actually wearing what you call absorbent lined underwear! I wasn’t wearing panties at the time as I was totally unaware of their existence. I do so now as its much more comfortable in lots of ways and in addition, stops the shiver when an errant chill wind blows unexpectedly up your gusset!
Moving on…
Getting into the car, the Magus paused until I had done up my seatbelt before starting the engine, waiting for another car to pass us by before safely pulling out and sedately driving off. I later learned that we could have gone screaming down the road in a cloud of burning rubber if the Magus was of a mind to. I would have if given the opportunity! Something to look forward to dear reader.
Instead, we drifted slowly through the placidly moving traffic as I watched the sun descend below the horizon of the ocean. I had only been back here on Earth for a few hours but every second was total bliss. I do not think that most of you humans realize how good you have it here. Even those who do not reside in the more developed and advanced nations, being on Earth is special.
There are infinity more worse places you can be, let me assure you of that.
We drove back mostly the way we had travelled to this particular beach. This time though it was much later in the day, heading in the opposite direction, I became aware of many more things that had escaped my attention earlier on.
We passed by denser zones and clusters of buildings where I could see various shops, food outlets, restaurants and varying vendors, all brightly lit up now as the daylight was fading. I saw incredibly tall metal poles with blazing, glowing lights illuminating the surrounds with a warm yellowy orange glow making it still easy to see. Electric lighting will never cease to amaze me. Yes dear reader, I can experience a sense of wonder and joy at simple things, even beyond the act of slaughter and soul draining. Would it astonish you that I like flowers? Such strange lifeforms that had developed aromas they use as a method of propagation. Delightful.
Anyway… we shortly crested the hill that we had previous ascended westwards earlier on the way to the beach and then I saw it!
I was awestruck once again.
Towering edifices, glittering, shining buildings monstrously higher than Hagia Sophia was, the most immense human made structure in the world when I was last in it. These glistening towers of glass, metal and stone made that church look like a feeble children’s toy. I could see over a dozen of these buildings of varying size, clustered together in less than a square mile.
The Magus glanced to his left and saw me gaping at them.
“They’re called Sky Scrapers Meridiana. They’re generally office buildings, places of business where people daily work in their wage-slave jobs then go home at night. The buildings are left vacant but light up at night as you can clearly see.”
I turned and gawped at him.
“They’re empty at night?”
I could not comprehend why such space, that had amazing views, would be left empty of an evening?
“Yep. Well most of them are. There will be some that still have people in them, conducting various types of business overnight because its what they do for a living.”
“What do they do?” I asked in a murmur as I turned back to see the vista be obscured by a large set of commercial and residential buildings that we were currently passing.
The Magus shrugged.
“They’ll be doing all sorts of things, financial trading, working back late to do their jobs… various affairs of commerce and such. It’s not that important really Meridiana. I’ll take you into the city another day when we have time for you to be a tourist. Now, if I may, I want to know more about your Telekinesis. I got an idea of how much you can lift, probably over 1400 kilograms at least if my guess as to how much a warhorse in armour with a rider would weigh… maybe more? Probably more but we’ll test that later. Anyway, it’s your fine control skills I’m interested in.”
I turned back to the Magus who was looking ahead, driving us through the busy traffic that had become a factor. I later learned that it was a time of day called ‘rush hour’.
“I am capable of very delicate manipulation with my Telekinesis, especially in regards to the erotic arts,” I said to him with a husky, low, salacious purr.
“That’s cute but I really want to know if you could snatch out of the air and control a very small, fast moving bouncing ball, say the size of your thumbnail?” he asked in an offhand manner as he slowed down due to the traffic which was banking up in front of us.
I inwardly sighed once more. Such a challenge he was!
“Yes I can but why?”
He briefly turned to me and broadly grinned before returning his attention to driving.
“There’s a game that we will ‘play’ after dinner. It is called Roulette. The game features a spinning wheel with thirty seven little slots. Into the spinning wheel a little white ball is spun in and circles around, eventually slowing and bouncing into once of the numbered slots. The slots are alternately coloured red or black and all are numbered from 00 to 36. You can bet where the ball will land, either in red or black and specifically in a numbered slot. If the ball lands in a slot you bet on, you get a payout of thirty seven to one. Ever dollar you bet wins you 37 back. You can also just bet on which colour the ball will land in giving you your money back plus it’s value as a reward. Bet $100, you get your $100 back plus another $100.”
“Dollar... that’s money right?” I said as the implications slowly dawned on me. You could make a fortune from this!
“Yes Meridiana. Dollars are what we use as currency these days. Gold is still used but not in the way you were used to. It’s still valuable as are other precious metals but that’s going to take a long explanation which is a distraction for now. So, do you think you could perhaps catch the bouncing ball with your power, directing it into the number we bet on?”
I thought about it for a few moments.
“I will have to see how the ball moves but I think I could, yes.”
“Excellent. You stand to make us a lot of money tonight. There are other games like card games, slot machines which I’m uncertain that your powers would be able to mess with. Roulette is our hunting ground. We must be careful though.”
“Why?”
I was surprised by his tone of caution. We were power incarnate! What could possibly touch us?
“Casinos hate losing money. Roulette is going to be the hardest one they can prove that we’re cheating on if you use your Telekinesis. We will be closely watched the entire time we are in the casino. There are devices called cameras, similar to Crystal Balls, that observe everything they see, relaying the images back to people in other rooms whose task it is to spot potential cheaters in the casino. They also have people walking the floor, disguised as ordinary folk, always watching everyone else. And I want to avoid the eyes of any infernal beings who may be in the casino.”
“Ahh… I see… a healthy paranoia then, for them and us hmm?”
He nodded once, emphatically.
If you have a fortune, you need to protect it, especially from people like me. His caution in regards to our identity was also most prudent and he was correct that there was a possibility that there may be others of my ilk lurking in the shadows, walking in human form as we often do.
I have to confess dear reader, that I am a master thief as well as an expert assassin, in addition to being an accomplished warrior although I rarely fight in hand to hand combat, preferring seduction, subterfuge and skulduggery as my main methods of killing. Yet still, I can fight and kill extremely proficiently with many weapons, being skilled at one of the highest levels of melee combat, the use of weapons and ways of fighting with them. I’ve been around a while you know? You pick up on things like that if you wish to live as long as I have.
Besides… stabby, stabby, stabby, bash, slash and smite can be loads of fun when you’re doing the stabbing and bashing with a well-balanced blade or mace in your hands. But I digress…
“You have it Meridiana. Yes the casinos’ management are extremely paranoid. We will have to alter our appearance as well before we enter the casino. I shall use a minor low level spell while you can take a new face. We will do so after dinner.”
I nodded then a thought came to me. I asked,
“You said we were going to something called a buffet? I know what the word means as my abilities allow me to understand any spoken language, much like the enchantment known as Tongues. Yet I’m finding it hard to match the word with the concept.”
The Magus raised an eyebrow in interest at this revelation.
“Oh right. Just because you know a word doesn’t mean you automatically understanding it conceptually and in context either. Good to know. Well, a buffet is an enormous array of various foods, hot and cold, sweet to savoury, where you merely help yourself and consume as much as you wish. You pay for the privilege of course.”
“Truly? How much will this cost you?” I inquired wide eyed.
I noticed that we had moved through the traffic and had turned down a descending road and were now going into a massive concrete tunnel along with hundreds of other cars, all slowly moving in the same direction. It was quite honestly astounding that everyone was not smashing into one another. All the drivers were…well mostly were, attentive to their immediate surrounds and situation as we gradually merged our car into the main lane of traffic which was making its way under the earth via the huge yawning tunnel ahead.
Such staggering feats of engineering and construction which would have made the Emperor Justinian weep copious, bitter tears of pure envy. Oh how I wished I could make him see this and realise his idiotic boast was pointless when he finished Hagia Sophia. He bragged that he had surpassed Solomon himself with his church. He had but it wasn’t worth it. Justinian nearly bankrupted the Eastern Roman Empire, all for a useless church and his own vanity.
Moron.
Still, I shouldn’t care, his hubris ended up sending him to hell anyway so... yay! His actions also exacerbated the effects of the famine and plague that swept the through the empire and western Europe in the year 535 with his stupid desire to re-unify the Roman empire under his rule. You will be pleased to know dear reader, that he is burning in eternal torment for his multitude of sins so it is all good. My thoughts of deceased, vainglorious emperors and their fate were interrupted as the Magus spoke again,
“Hmm? … it should set us back about $80 each I’d should say? A small price to pay in all honesty when you see what is on offer. Drinks will be on top of that price, unless you just have plain water but tonight Meridiana, I shall introduce you to Champagne, one of humanities greatest achievements.”
This was enticing to hear!
“If you say so Magus. I completely believe you as you will not be lying to me,” I said, nodding and trying to think about Champagne.
So many new concepts were entering my mind, it was hard to keep my mind and thoughts in order. I understood that Champagne was a special type of wine, one which had a fizz embodied within it, making it highly regarded but that’s all I could deduce for now.
Also… I had a thought: the Magus could and would never lie to me. The feeling I had earlier, in being able to trust everything he said to me because of the oath he gave to me, was an unfettering sensation.
All my existence I have dealt with bare faced lairs, deceivers, misshapers of the truth who twisted words to suit their own selfish ends. With the Magus, all I had to be concerned with was his agenda, which actually had my interests aligned with his own. Truly remarkable.
I needed that champagne now!
We emerged from the tunnel, traveling with the traffic over wide dark river, again on another immense concrete bridge this time. There was a gigantic colosseum off to our right, all lit up with multiple coloured lights that ran around the circumference of the structure. It was like as though it was enveloped in a rainbow. Frankly, it was amazing to behold.
Beyond that, I could see many more large towers and structures, lining the sides of the vast road we were hurtling along now. The Magus had increased our speed as traffic had thinned out. Never in my life had I moved so fast, well unless I was using a Haste spell to briefly increase my physical speed, which I use in combat if necessary.
I barely had the sense we were travelling in the car at roughly 80kph. Such an odd experience to have for the first time. There was no rushing of wind, no press of air on my face, just comfort and air-conditioning. Marvellous!
After a few minutes later I saw our destination.
Again I was nearly stupefied by the gigantic structure. Multiple massive buildings, all surrounded by lush green, well-manicured and maintained gardens made my jaw go slack with disbelief.
“That’s Crown Casino, Towers and hotel Meridiana. I can see you are impressed. Let me just say that if you think this is amazing, wait until we go to Las Vegas…” he said as he turned the car into the driveway of the complex.
“There’s even more impressive structures than this?”
My mind boggled dear reader. It was almost too much to take in.
“Yep. My city is a small one compared to others around the globe. We will travel to them, in due course. I know you can use your powers of Dimensional Walking, moving through other planes of reality and appearing on a different part of the planet. However, there will be times when we will need to travel together conventionally. Perhaps one day, if I learn the right spells, we will be able to avoid having to fly in an aeroplane and by-pass the utter tediousness of baggage check-ins, airport security and so on…” he muttered darkly.
“HUMANS CAN FLY!?!” I said in a loud strangled astonished voice.
The Magus chuckled with genuine amusement.
“Think back Meridiana. I said humanity has been to the moon and back. I said we can travel safely and comfortably in a machine, called an aircraft, across the planet. Some ‘planes are huge while others are not much bigger than the car. Oh, that reminds me, we will have to construct an identity for you. We will begin that process tomorrow. You are going to need a passport soon enough,” he said as he found a relatively unoccupied parking area west of the massive structures.
He saw my puzzled expression and mistook it for wondering why we had parked here.
“It’s free to park here and there are hardly any security cameras in the vicinity.”
I nodded dumbly.
“But of course Magus…”
He saw my expression as he switched off the engine. A tiny look of… sympathy appeared on his face. He spoke to me in a soft, calm, soothing tone,
“Take a breath Meridiana. Close your eyes and focus upon the stillness within the vehicle. You are safe here with me. Nothing will harm us. Just breathe and relax, let each breath calm you. With every breath you are at peace within yourself and the world around you.”
I did as he said and instantly sensed my whirling mind begin to centre itself, become still.
I may be an ancient and powerful demon dear reader, however I have been imprisoned for nigh on a thousand years and now have been released into a world that I was unable to recognise at all.
The Magus later told me I was suffering from a psychological malady called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Yes dear reader, even us demons can get mentally fucked up. I mean, compared to the average human, we’re all demented, tormented psychopaths which explains a lot about ourselves but still… even a psychopath can suffer from mental trauma. Demons can go insane.
I breathed rhythmically, each exhaling breath calming me. With one final exhalation, I opened my eyes, turned to my Magus and softly smiled at him.
“Thank you,” was all I said. I meant it.
He nodded briefly, his intensely burning eyes boring into mine, deeply searching, looking for signs of any madness that may still be lingering within. Well, there’s always the hunger for sex and mayhem, but that’s natural for me.
“Come on, you look fine now, let’s go,” he said as he got out of the car.
I followed his example, releasing my seat belt and stepping out of the car. Closing the car door behind me, walked over to the Magus then I threaded my right arm around his left as we walked off like a normal couple, casually strolling through the car park towards the casino and hotel.
I could hear the noise of all the adjacent traffic all still travelling busily along the massive road that went past the enormous complex. There was the calls of various birds I’d never heard before, the waft of scented flowering plants and the heavy aroma of moisture in the air from the nearby river. I closed my eyes for a second just to let it all wash over me as I sedately walked along with my Magus.
Soon we came to the entrance. Huge dark glass doors magically opened for us upon our arrival. To my right I could see various coloured signage, advertising the types of ‘fast food’ eateries that people could choose to dine at. They were all brightly lit and mostly clean.
It was at that moment I saw my first wretch.
A dishevelled, unkempt, shabby man sat listless outside the fast food eateries upon the low stone wall that contained a small, well-kept garden. He looked up at us as we approached, his eyes full of misery and despair.
“Got any spare change?”
“Sorry mate, no one carries cash anymore,” lied my Magus to him with a conciliatory voice, a sad but brief compassionate smile appeared briefly on his face.
The wretched man’s face became even more resigned. He nodded back in understanding, returning his fallen face back to morosely contemplating the ground at his feet.
We kept walking, leaving the broken man behind us.
I was about to congratulate the Magus in his treatment of the beggar when I had to stop as I was confronted by an incredible sight.
Before us, in the huge well-lit lobby of the building, was a huge pair of MOVING METAL STAIRCASES!
One staircase ascended while another came down from the landing some 50 feet above us. On either side were normal, marble clad stairs that some people were using. Yet many other people were on the moving metal stairs, all just taking the experience of being raised or lowered completely for granted.
“It’s just an escalator Meridiana. A simple machine that makes life a little more comfortable. Take it, go for a ride. I’m taking the stairs as I need the incidental exercise,” he said to me as he pried my clutching hands from his arm. I had been unconsciously gripping him tightly in my amazement at seeing such a machine.
The Magus walked off to the left, climbing the steps briskly while I gingerly walked forwards, watching the metal stairs endless appear and ascend upwards. The hand rail also moved in synchronicity with the metal stairs. I observed as a pair of young women, chatting intently to each other, walked past me and up to stand upon a metal stair which was part of dozens of metal stairs it seemed. I saw them be lifted by the moving stairs, rising above and away from me.
Summoning my courage, I stepped forwards onto a moving stair, wobbled slightly as I was not used to the speed which it moved, making me grab the moving banister tightly to steady myself as I rode my way upwards. I let out a small laugh as it was such a novel experience. The young women in front of me turned around at my laugh, raising their eyebrows at me as well as actually truly seeing me for the first time. Their smiles faded as I grinned back at them.
The young women could see my infinitely superior beauty on full display. They looked hesitant, now uncertain of themselves as they mistakenly believed themselves to be beautiful. They were, passible, not ugly but not worthy of a harem to be perfectly honest. I later learned dear reader that many foolish young women, especially in what you call the western world, regard themselves as queens, rating themselves ten out of ten on a scale of dazzling good looks. These sad women are delusional. I mean, if they were that beautiful, why weren’t their faces on the covers of the glossy magazines I see in various ‘supermarket’ check outs? No matter, vanity and hubris are all ways to damnation and misery. So many people sending themselves to eternal torment simply because they were raised by idiotic parents who never properly taught their children the need for humility. It’s all win-win for the pits you know…
My Magus met me at the top of the stairs, holding out his hand to me and then leading me through the vast interior of the complex.
“That’s the casino,” he indicated to our right.
Looking, I could see dozens of people making their way inside into the brightly lit and noisy interior of the casino. I caught the whiff of desperation, despair, avarice, lust, elation and a strong aroma of human urine. I wrinkled my nose in disgust. Yes, even I have some standards dear reader.
“Magus, why does it reek of piss?” I asked as we strolled by and proceeded into the most immense, glass covered atrium I have ever seen.
“Oh, you can smell that?” He looked intrigued.
I nodded with a mild look of disgust.
“Hah… interesting. Well… some gamblers get stuck on a poker machine. They sit there for hours, desperately hoping that the machine they are playing on will pay out. The poor fools stupidly believe that if they play at the machine long enough, they’ll win big. So they stay seated, ignoring the need to relieve their bodily urges, to the extent that they prefer to piss themselves rather than abandon the machine that is draining away their money. The poor fools are incapable of understanding that the machine is designed to rarely pay out. Every time they play, it has a simple algorithm that calculates the chance of a payout. Most machines will payout a small amount of money occasionally, thus keeping the gambler hooked in the mistaken belief that the big one is just around the corner. It rarely, if ever, is.”
I stopped, stunned at what I just heard. The Magus stopped and looked at me with a raised eyebrow.
“That’s… diabolically genius!” I stuttered as I considered the fiendish brilliance of the whole concept.
Someone had made hell on earth not only possible but also could make a fortune from it as well as breaking people’s souls and spirits in the process! The concept of dangling hope in front of a damned soul, then snatching it away was one of the oldest known tortures of hell. This was a magnificent, a culmination of the perfection of thousands upon thousands of years of the torture, all neatly packaged in a fairly simple machine designed to beggar it’s user and turn them into slaves to it. Gobsmacking was the only word I could think off that fully encapsulated the way I felt at that moment.
“Yes it is, isn’t it? I have always suspected that those machines were most likely invented by a demon. It makes perfect sense,” he said as he shrugged, then tilted his head, indicating we should proceed onwards.
I noddled dumbly as again, I had been totally overwhelmed by the latest piece of information the Magus informed of. I barely registered the hundreds of people all wandering around the massive lobby of the hotel atrium. Many were dressed finely while others, mostly men, were dressed casually. My Magus was one of them, still wearing his novelty T-shirt and hemp pants. They were clean though and his shoes, a brand known as Babuuk, made him look somehow better dressed then the other men who were similarly attired. Maybe it was just his subtle aurora of power, his sheer confidence and his towering Will that made him stand out from the mouth breathers all around us? I guess it was.
We arrived at the entrance of the restaurant and the Magus was greeted by a short Asian woman, dressed neatly in the hotels livery.
I started to realise that there were people from so many different races of humanity all around us. I had come from a time where only what was left of the Eastern Roman Empire was this diverse, and even then it was but a shadow of the heyday of the full glory that was Rome. Here were people from almost all the lands of earth, all happily co-mingling, getting on with having dinner with family and friends. Very surprising indeed.
The Asian woman at the reception counter spoke to us with a friendly smile,
“Good evening sir, madam. A table for two for you then?” she asked politely, her voice tinged with a broad accent I had not heard before. She spoke English yet I could tell that wasn’t her first language.
“Yes please,” politely replied the Magus.
This was something I did not expect. Despite his and my obvious power, he was respectful and even kind to the servants. All of them. He didn’t condescend nor sneer down at the servants of the hotel. It is still something I have difficulty reconciling. I said nothing, just observed. Oh, he has since instructed me not to call them servants, they are members of staff and will be treated with respect until they show they do not deserve it, then they are fair game. I can live with that.
“Table seventy one is ready for you both, have a lovely evening.”
She actually meant it! I could see it in her eyes, she was truly enjoying her task. She was smiling and joking with her fellow staff members, politely greeting the next people behind us with her cheerful friendly demeanour.
Astonishing.
In my prior experiences, servants and slaves were a miserable lot but then again, that was understandable. They had no choice as to their circumstances. They had to obey lest they suffer harsh punishment.
As we proceeded into the large dining room, with over a hundred tables of varying sizes, I could see off to my left where the food was.
I stopped again and stared dear reader.
I have been to banquets with Emperors and Kings, Popes and Princes, all sumptuous feasts but nothing was like what I saw before me. Dozens upon dozens of people had plates in their hands, all calmly wandering around the incredible cornucopia of varieties of food that were on display, all brightly lit up for them to simply help themselves to as much as their plate could hold.
Roasted meats, all neatly carved by expert chefs, freshly shucked oysters all seated in enormous silver ice-filled serving bowls, trays upon trays of cooked vegetables of kinds I had never seen before and… a dazzling array of sweet desserts and treats that made me almost go weak at the knees at the very sight of them.
“Come on Meridiana, you’re starting to drool,” whispered the Magus gently into my ear as he dabbed my wet lips with a soft piece of paper that he withdrew from his pants pockets.
Once again I nodded dumbly as I allowed him to escort me to our table. He even seated me, pushing me and my chair in one I had sat down. After he had taken his seat, a young man, quite a handsome one from the Indus I believed?... came over to us, again dressed in the livery of the hotel.
“Good evening, sir, madam. Would you care for something to drink?” he inquired ever so politely.
“And good evening to you sir. Yes indeed, may we please have a bottle of Veuve Clicquot, two glasses and a bottle of San Pellegrino sparkling water?” he asked with a real smile to the servant… no member of staff.
“Of course sir, I shall get that for you immediately,” replied the waiter with a pleased smile at being spoken to so politely.
“Thank you,” said the Magus then he turned to me and asked,
“Do you need a moment Meridiana? I understand this might trigger you again…”
I shook my head.
“No. It is overwhelming… but in a good way Magus. I have to ask, how can a place like this provide so many people with so much food? Even in the height of the Empire, there were magnificent feasts to be sure but… you say this happens everyday, that this is just a Tuesday and not a busy night?”
He nodded.
“This is the age of abundance Meridiana. Many of us, who live in what is known as The West, have dwelt in an age of such wealth and richness that almost all here never think on their incredible luck and privilege to live in such times. They do not know that it will come to an end. Maybe that is a small mercy. All golden ages end as you well know. So I say, let them dwell in ignorant bliss for now. We can enjoy it while it lasts.”
“Huh? Why do you believe that your golden age will end Magus?”
“It’s a long explanation and one I do not wish to go into detail here and now Meridiana but later, I will share my thoughts with you on this. Ahh, here comes our champagne.”
The waiter and another staff member had returned, with one carrying two bottles while the other had a metal bucket partially filled with ice. The waiter from the Indus placed both bottles on our table, displayed the label to the Magus who briefly nodded. Then, the waiter removed the cork from the bottle with an adroit twist of his wrist. It made a pleasing pop and I could see a little haze of cold… smoke? lightly emanate from the neck of the bottle. He poured the brightly bubbling and fizzing wine into both our glasses, carefully making sure the foam did not overflow them. He was very good at his task.
“Thank you good sir,” said my Magus to the waiter who beamed back at him with a happy smile. He placed the bottle into the bucket of ice and withdrew, leaving us alone, amidst the crowed dinning room.
The Magus took up his glass, holding it in front of him. I mirrored him.
“Here’s to a good dinner with interesting company and later, ripping the shit out of a casino Meridiana.” He pushed his glass gently forwards, lightly clinking it against mine. I wasn’t familiar at the time with that form of salute and toast but went with it anyway, after all… when in Rome as they used to say.
“That sounds… delightful Magus. I am eager for it all.”
I then took a sip of my champagne and was transported into a realm of heavenly bliss.
It was exquisite.

2023.04.02 09:00 the_maestro_sartori Family Island level 16

Highly recommend the Family Island level 16 in 6 days (U.K.) Very easy to hit with only logging in a few times a day, I’m on day 4 and pending now without putting any cash in.
Big advice would be that the target is XP to level up, not aiming to upgrade the buildings it aims you towards.
Happy hunting!

Dodo code is 9tmc5. My island is a little under construction but shop is open for another 30 minutes, haven’t seen any stars yet though

2023.04.02 07:46 Multievolution A bunch of random and lesser known Pokémon facts (some are useful)

Since I’ve played the first 4 gens quite a lot, I’ve picked up a fair few neat little facts over the years, some are actually useful and I thought I would share them, I’ll be going through each gen for this.
Red/blue/yellow/green
It’s possible to evolve a stone based Pokémon with a glitch by swapping to a Pokémon that has a specific pokedex number after levelling up, for Staryu for example, I believe the Pokémon you need to swap to is onix.
Gold/SilveCrystal
Due to how shiny Pokémon are determined by stats in these games, you can breed shines at odds between 1/64-1/256 depending on gender ratios of the Pokémon, it’s actually impossible to have 1/8192 odds by breeding in these games, as it’s either those or 0.
In the location that you get eevee in gen one, the staircase that’s on the top floor has a interact-able wall to the right of the staircase that you can click to have your character do something slightly dubious.
You can reset your time and date by using a special code that’s determined by your in game money and trainer Id, calculators exist online for this.
Ruby/sapphire/emerald
This one’s a little bit cheeky, but in theory it is possible using some technical knowhow to trade between gen 2 and 3. I believe it requires special tools and it’s dubious at best, but that proves it in theory was possible back then if they wanted to work on it.
as most people know you can use cut to remove wild encounter grass, but you can remove more per cut if the Pokemon has hyper cutter.
Firered/leaf green
The trainer tower in the sevi islands is incomplete in western copies. In Japan you have the ability to change trainers that show up with an e-card reader.
The legendary beasts appearing in these games due to a programming error will always have awful IV’s.
For all gen 3 games a mew or deoxy’s that’s cheated in and illegitimate will never obey under any circumstances.
Diamond/peaplatinum
The bicycle stands near Pokémon centres can be used to get on and off your bike instead of the normal method.
Slot machines in games that don’t allow you to gamble can provide free coins when interacted with.
Heart gold/soul silver
There’s a npc in violet that will provide an egg randomly between mareep, wooper and slugma. It requires a special code you can generate online using your trainer id and game language.

2023.04.02 07:46 buffering001 Using GLFW library in a CUDA program

I am trying to execute the following code(sample_code.cu) on vscode -
#include  #include  #include "./include/GLFW/glfw3.h" #define WINDOW_WIDTH 800 #define WINDOW_HEIGHT 600 // CUDA kernel to fill the RGB buffer with values __global__ void fillRGB(unsigned char *rgb) { int idx = blockIdx.x * blockDim.x + threadIdx.x; int offset = idx * 3; rgb[offset] = idx % 255; // R value rgb[offset + 1] = (idx * 3) % 255; // G value rgb[offset + 2] = (idx * 7) % 255; // B value } int main(int argc, char **argv) { GLFWwindow* window; // Initialize GLFW if (!glfwInit()) { fprintf(stderr, "Failed to initialize GLFW\n"); return -1; } // Create a windowed mode window and its OpenGL context window = glfwCreateWindow(WINDOW_WIDTH, WINDOW_HEIGHT, "Custom RGB Window", NULL, NULL); if (!window) { fprintf(stderr, "Failed to create GLFW window\n"); glfwTerminate(); return -1; } // Make the window's context current glfwMakeContextCurrent(window); // Allocate memory for RGB buffer on device unsigned char *dev_rgb; cudaMalloc((void**)&dev_rgb, WINDOW_WIDTH * WINDOW_HEIGHT * 3 * sizeof(unsigned char)); // Fill RGB buffer with values using kernel int threadsPerBlock = 256; int blocksPerGrid = (WINDOW_WIDTH * WINDOW_HEIGHT + threadsPerBlock - 1) / threadsPerBlock; fillRGB<<>>(dev_rgb); // Allocate memory for RGB buffer on host unsigned char *host_rgb = new unsigned char[WINDOW_WIDTH * WINDOW_HEIGHT * 3]; // Copy RGB buffer from device to host cudaMemcpy(host_rgb, dev_rgb, WINDOW_WIDTH * WINDOW_HEIGHT * 3 * sizeof(unsigned char), cudaMemcpyDeviceToHost); // Loop until the user closes the window while (!glfwWindowShouldClose(window)) { // Render RGB buffer to window glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); glDrawPixels(WINDOW_WIDTH, WINDOW_HEIGHT, GL_RGB, GL_UNSIGNED_BYTE, host_rgb); glfwSwapBuffers(window); glfwPollEvents(); } // Clean up GLFW glfwTerminate(); // Clean up memory cudaFree(dev_rgb); delete[] host_rgb; return 0; }

I am very new with GLFW and cant say I understand everything in the code , but my aim is to execute a program which uses both the CUDA and GLFW library.

Note- I am able to run independant GLFW sample codes using g++ compiler but I am facing a variety of errors when I am trying to do the same with the nvcc compiler

My project structure looks like this -

include (all the include files from the glfw-3.3.8.bin.WIN64 folder) lib-mingw-w64 (all the files in the lib -mingw-w64 folder) lib-vc2019 (all the files in the lib-vc2019 folder) glfw3.dll sample_code.cu

And to compile this file in the integrated terminal I am writing -

nvcc -Llib-vc2019 sample_code.cu -o sample_code -lglfw3 -lopengl32 -lgdi32

As I said I am able to compile and execute g++ compiled code so I think the native GLFW libraries are set correctly , but when I execute the above command I get errors like -

I realise I am missing a lot of steps but I tried to look around to find any concrete steps to setup such an environment and right now I am in a fix with no idea whatsoever on how to move forward!
