Thermal simulation of peltier element in fusion 360
Hi,
I am working a two staged cooling solution for a sensor using pelters elements in a vacuum chamber. (See figure 1)
Peltiers elements or Thermal Electric Coolers (TEC) are devices that heat on one side and cool on the other when an electrical current pass through it.
In order to simulate the setup, I have applied a internal heat load corresponding of the electrical power of the Peltier in addition of the heat transfert from one side to another (ie 70W in my case for each Peltier)
Also I have added an applied temperature to the cool side of the first Peltier (-50°C in my case, that is what I want to obtain but I cannot for now)
And finally I have put a radiation load on all the surfaces.
I have done all that but it doesn't seem right, I was wondering if you had more informations on how to simulate Peltiers elements. Is there a way to insert pelters elements and their characteristics ?
Any help would be very helpful, thanks.

2023.06.08 16:55 UsefulAirport Power Surge Advice

Hello dads. I don’t have a dad and I need some dad advice.
I live in a condo. 3 of the past 7 days there have been morning power outages that quickly resolve. However I am worried for my electronics because my Dell hub will frequently just stop working afterwards.
  1. I need a surge protector. Any suggestions?
  2. The power company says that the power blips are caused by wildlife getting into their high voltage systems. Three times in one week? I’m doubtful. The last time this was happening it was during the construction of a new condo building next door. Once the building was complete the power outages stopped. There’s a new building being built in our complex. Could the construction be related to the power outages?? I just don’t understand how the power company’s equipment can be so susceptible to wildlife only right now and not at all last year but i don’t have enough knowledge to really question what the power company told me.
Thanks for reading, dads.

2023.06.08 16:51 PersonalJ Solar Power Generation/Consumption experts, I need your help!

Hey everyone!
I'm diving into the world of solar power with my Home Assistant setup and could really use your expertise. Here's what I'm working with:
Scenario example:
Objective: Is there a way to track and analyze the cost specifically? I have the consumption/generation sensors all set up (they provide active power in Watts and daily/monthly kWh).
Now I'm trying to figure out the following:
  • Extra Power Generated: I want to create a sensor that calculates the surplus power I generate beyond my consumption in kWh (For example, if I consume electricity at night, it shouldn't just subtract from what I generated in the morning)
  • Excess Power Consumed: I need to develop another sensor that shows the excess power I consume, exceeding my generation in kWh.
  • Daily Cost: I want to calculate the daily cost of electricity based on consumption and the timing of the day.
I have something started below, but I want to be more detailed. Thank you in advance for your assistance!
sensor: - platform: template sensors: power_difference: friendly_name: "Active Power Difference" unit_of_measurement: "W" value_template: "{{ states('sensor.generation') float - states('sensor.consumption') float }}" extra_power_generated: friendly_name: "Extra Power Generated" unit_of_measurement: "kWh" value_template: "{{ ((states('sensor.generation') float - states('sensor.consumption') float) / 1000) round(2) }}" excess_power_consumed: friendly_name: "Excess Power Consumed" unit_of_measurement: "kWh" value_template: "{{ (((states('sensor.consumption') float) / 1000) - (states('sensor.generation') float)) round(2) }}" cost_of_excess_power: friendly_name: "Cost of Excess Power" unit_of_measurement: "AUD" value_template: "{{ (((states('sensor.consumption') float) / 1000) - (states('sensor.generation') float)) * 0.28 round(2) }}"

2023.06.08 16:49 MrNyanCat1 Should I have a surge protector on my pc?

About a month ago now, I had a power outage that went on, off, on and back off I like 5 seconds. That was when i was using my old laptop so should i get a surge protector? Power outages are rare but when it does happen, it is severe as in what happened on the last one. Heard it could kill your pc because of that.

2023.06.08 16:47 RedAlienCreature Data and Information

⌬Race name: Zatt'rox⌬
⌬Cultural description: Zatt'roxes are feared all over the galaxy for one simple reason - their destructive and conquaering tendencies. Currently the number of planets and worlds captured by them reaches hundreds of thousands and the killcount during all those conquests goes far beyond billion point. Their social structure is built on stern hierarchy, where aplhas(a) and deltas(δ) dominate over gammas(γ), dzetas(ζ) and epsilons(υ). Their level of technological development alows them to create the strongest fleet in the whole universe, which is only limited by their own concerns. Despite reaching supremacy in terms of industrialization and military technology, their science is in constant development supported by the methods which make the most corrupted minds crumble. Their approach towards other races is purely nationalistic, as they divide other species into betas(β) - unworthy to be used as something higher than working force and experiment material, and kappas(κ) - worthy to be used for complex purposes and be bred.⌬
⌬Biological description: Over the ages of self-modification Zatt'rox race divided into stern types, with different social role and position: Leading types - 1.Zatt'rox α (Commander and Alpha Soldier) Tall, muscular, bulky humanoids, made for ensuring domination and leading armies of Zatt'rox race. Naturally born warriors and commanders. They carry such biological adaptations, as chitinous armor, expanded musculature, multiple limbs or body parts(depends on individuls) and natural weapons. 2.Zatt'rox δ (Scientist or Priest) Tall, slender humanoids with foreign structure modified to be the scientist and influencer of Zatt'rox race. Their bodies are naturally modified to lack pure power(in comparison to other Zatt'rox) instead gifted with otherworldly flexible and developed brains. Their adaptations have wide variety depending on fields of expertise, but stick with multiple upper limbs, non-humanoid lower half and developed brain, capable of hard calculations and manipulating electric fields. Subtypes - 1.Zatt'rox γ (Worker) and Zatt'rox ζ (Soldier). Red muscular humanoids, who rarely leave their armor. They rarely posses any biological adaptations, and their brain development usually is coded shortly after their birth. They have limited willpower, as they obey their alphas and deltas, usually serving as minions, who do dirty work. The only class they can give commands to are slaves of beta class. 2.Zatt'rox υ (Wild) Zatt'rox υ are balancing on the line between race and bioweapon, as they are wild and primitive version of Zatt'rox race, serving them as hounds. They have multiple breeds depending on environment they are tasked to work with.
Originally Zatt'rox divided into two genders - males and females, but over the years of selection the percentage of female went down to zero. The reason is that Zatt'rox decided to use other species as incubators or broodmothers for their species. The most feminine variation of Zatt'rox is hermaphrodite, which usually are classified as omega(ω) Zatt'rox - separate category, which are higher than subtypes, but lower than leading types. However, hermaphrodites are presented in less than 1% of Zatt'rox population.⌬
⌬Danger: Zatt'rox is a race of conquerors, who doesn't limit itself with honor or humanism, when it comes to war. They are know for using wide variety of weaponry, such as military AI, Bioweaponry, Chemical weaponry, energy weaponry, nuclear and singular weaponry. They are constantly searching for new targets, be it world, planet or even single individual. The gladly accept any kind of location or data they receive on any organism or resources.⌬

2023.06.08 16:43 Gizmo_Autismo Battery, speed control and mid drive predicaments - what to do?

For starters, original parts for this bike (Kettler Traveller e speed 9) are pretty much unavailable and / or cost as much as an electric bike itself, so "buy original X" is out of the window, sadly.
Hello! Recently my acquaintance gave me an ebike battery to rebuild since it's cells are worn out and it doesn't hold much charge anymore. On top of that the charger (smart fancypants one with two additional wires for magic data communication) crapped out because it's connector got mauled. At first I thought that's not a big deal, I'll just replace it and move the original BMS to a new custom-built pack using wiredancing (better safe than sorry!). For the record it's the technique where you connect each cell group in parallel from both old and new batterypacks with reduntant wires (while they are both at the same voltage level to avoid high currents between them) to prevent the BMS from commiting suicide because it got disconnected from it's cells. It has become certain to me that it has been tampered with before me, since there were just random damaged wires pinched between the screw parts and the elephant in the room - the whole batterypack was encased in just off-the-shelf silicone "potting" that was put in a shopping bag from a popular supermarket in my country. There is no way this came from the factory like that. Fortunately even after clearing all that mess, disconnecting the old pack and putting the new one in the original housing it seems to have worked well, the BMS still gave an output of 39V at the main discharge port (in this case the positive side is switched) reacted to the button that lights up the charge-gauge, showing around half charge. At this point I didn't have the ebike at my place, since it's just the battery / charger job. So I went over to the charger's connector, fixed up the connector aaaand... it's still dead. No power draw from mains. When I opened it up (and removed a crap ton of potting) I found the reason why - fuse and the rectifier is busted. As I specialise in SMPS repair it wasn't that big of a deal, replaced both and the charger (probably) started working again, with a tiny tiny constant mains draw (around a miliamp) and a 5V pulse appearing every second or so between one of the data cables and the ground output. I assume the smarts came back alive so I plugged it into the battery for the first time in working condition. As expected the charger "woke up", power draw went up to a few watts, it started blinking a green LED a few times and then it stopped. Further disconnect / reconnect attempts resulted in the charger blinking red lights for a change. Not a good sign. Turns out the battery is also flashing red instead of showing its state of charge. No power output too which is also a bad sign. So with both the charger and the original BMS inoperatove I turned to good old simple and stupid Daly Chinesium with an extra fuse for good measure. (The original BMS is still in the same state as it was connected into a third, different scrapped batterypack just to prevent it from actually dying-dying. Still red blinking lights though.) After the battery arrived at my friend's house it turns out that the other two data cables between the battery and bike are vital for the bike to actually turn on the assist. Instead it spits out an error code that corresponds to "faulty or counterfeit battery". I had hopes the controller wasnt smart-enough-to-be-stupid, but here we are right now. The bike is at my place, so I can tamper with the ins and outs of this electronic safety nightmare all I want.
Here are a few plans or courses of action I have in mind depending on how the bike cooperates (or doesn't). The obvious problem is that both me and the bike's owner doesn't want to overspend and we preferably want to keep the bike street-legal with a functional LCD coming with fancy stuff like the speedomer, battery level etc:
-The first plan of keeping the original BMS and charger is out the window, since you need both for it to work. Original BMS would absolutely not let the pack be charged with a dumb charger. But for now it's dead anyways, so no point in thinking about this option anyway... but there might be an option of trying to trick and convince the bike's controller that chinesium is the original. Hard to tell how well it's protected since most of the big brainy IC's on the original BMS are unmarked and their datasheets are probably proprietary, stored in some big rich businessman's pants as he laughs at all the peasants buying new batteries. I did however save what was outputted by each pin of the original battery and it might be possible to emulate it with some janky resistors and more chinesium. As long as it is not a complex digital signal it should (theoritically ne possible). I will make an update if it works.
-The second plan is to ditch the original electronics im favour of a more available universal BLDC driver with some LCD stuff, but the problem is that they usually use their hall sensor assembly to asses the RPMs and therefore the speed. Since this is a middrive the bike relies on a stupid-simple rpm sensor magnet attached to the rear wheel, so the controller would print out the speed of the motor, not the bike's, regardless of wheel RPM - and that is a function that seems to be mandatory for legal ebikes in Poland as they should not provide assist above 25km/h. Some people ditch that and unlock their bikes and I honestly don't think that's that big of an issue as long as everyone is sensible. As far as I know I don't have any way of modifying universal controllers to use that to spit out accurate speed measurements. The second problem is that the motor's controller is covered in copious amounts of potting and is probably virtually impossible to free it without damaging it, so I refrain from doing so until I absolutely need to do so. Funny thing is that the label says the motor is a 36V 250W DC motor, but I'm almost certain it is not just a brushed dc motor in a funny case. That would be a pretty weird design choice, and paradoxically even worse for me, since there are pretty much no true DC ESCs with speed limiting AND LCDs on the market.
At this point I'm not sure what else to do, if anyone has any recommendations for either tricking / reviving the original electronics or a new controller setup that would actually provide a proper speed sensing option that would be swell. Sadly we are kind of struggling against forced problems since the manufacturer does not provide accessible spare parts. I thank you for reading my input and possibly providing information, maybe someone will find themselves in a similar situation one day.
[Off-topic, it's so stupid that we call everything a DC motor these days. BLDCs are just permament magnet three phase motors with an inverter.]

2023.06.08 16:39 autotldr Russian Forces Shell Kherson Shortly After Zelenskiy Visit To Areas Hit By Flooding

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 82%. (I'm a bot)
Thousands of people sought shelter after escaping rising floodwater amid an unfolding humanitarian and ecological disaster caused by the rupture of a major dam on the Dnieper River in southern Ukraine.
Ukrainian rescue teams used boats on June 7 to rescue residents from their flooded homes a day after the collapse of the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam and the emptying of its reservoir.
Residents tried to flee immediately after the dam ruptured, but Russian troops blocked them and offered them "Evacuation only to the territory of Russia," the head of the city's military administration said.
The Kakhovka dam - which is 30 meters tall and 3.2 kilometers long - is part a vital route for transport and irrigation, as well as supplying water to Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, located some 150 kilometers to the northeast.
Ukraine's Energy Ministry said on June 7 that as many as 20,000 people in the Kherson region had been left without electricity in the aftermath of the destruction of the dam.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on June 7 accused Ukraine of destroying the dam at the suggestion of the West despite the dam having been under Russian control when it ruptured.

2023.06.08 16:15 lets-split-up I went on a cruise, and one passenger didn’t belong…

I’ve seen bodies mashed, crushed, dismembered, stuffed into suitcases, blackened like meat on a grill, floating, bloating, with flies swarming their flesh and maggots wriggling out of their eyes. I have, in short, an intimacy with death.
But nothing prepared me for the horror in cabin 4044.
I stared at my own smoldering corpse, into the blackened sockets of my melted eyes, and ice raked my spine and splintered my bones, shivering all the way down to my frozen fingertips.
You knew this day would come, whispered a voice in my head. And then, as my nose wrinkled, Ugh, I smell like bacon.
Giggles. Oh dear. Not beneficial. Couldn’t I try to approach my death with some dignity? No? Well… fine. Ignoring my own bubbling hysteria, I held my napkin over my nostrils and leaned in. Cross-legged in a lotus position, hands cradled and thumbs touching, crispy me (hehe) held the pose of a meditating monk. From the liquor bottles scattered around the burnt wreckage as well as the pose, I’d started the fire myself. But what induced such madn—
Glowing white light suddenly emanated from the blackened sockets. I gasped, tumbling backwards over the coffee table.
When I sat up, the light was gone.
It did not reappear during the half hour I charged my phone, keeping one leery eye on my corpse while I used the ship’s spotty wifi for research.
A Mysterious Contagion
According to Google, the worst cruise disaster in modern times involved the partial capsizing of a vessel after a captain’s error led to a rock tearing open the hull. Of the four thousand passengers, 34 drowned.
Another ship infamously dubbed the “poop cruise” had its engines catch fire, and passengers were stranded for nearly a week on board without electricity or toilet facilities.
But the Seastar was not destined for any ocean or weather related incident, but rather, a contagion. And while coronavirus and norovirus have both afflicted cruise ships in recent years, no virus—not even rabies—could explain the self-mutilation. To say nothing of the virulence. A mortality rate of 100%? That was unheard of in nature. There should be some survivors, if only by happenstance.
Or is it because…
A terrible chill spread up the flesh of my arms, and a thought lodged like an ice pick in my skull: What if the doom of the Azure Seastar isn’t happenstance—but deliberate? Are there no survivors because someone doesn’t want there to be?
Numb at the implication, I set down my phone. But how? Why? A thousand passengers and crew… If there was someone planning such a disaster, how would I identify them? And why would anyone commit such an atrocity? My gut tightened, and I got up and ventured out to the upper decks.
Deck 9
Cold. Cold. Cold. The chill in my bones deepened with each hand I brushed. Passengers glared as I fumbled around, dismissing me as either blind or mentally feeble. The blindness was somewhat accurate—I couldn’t see under the electric lighting in the swanky interior, since my eyes were seeing six days in the future, when the Seastar would be plunged into blackout. I depended on my phone’s feeble flashlight as I navigated the sea of guests around the bar and lounge areas. But no matter how many arms and hands I bumbled into—COLD!
With no accidental survivors, I was becoming more and more convinced the Seastar’s doom must be deliberate, but I was still very much in the dark—literally and figuratively—about why.
The most useful discovery of the evening came after my collision with a heavyset older man whose drink I spilled. Noticing me sweeping around my phone’s pitiful beam and assuming I’d lost something, he offered to lend me a more powerful flashlight from his cabin.
“It’s one of those high powered ones if you want it.” He smiled, and I stared, every hair on my neck standing on end.
“Uh… Something on my face?” His smile turned into a confused frown under my phone’s light.
“N-no. Yes, a flashlight would be very helpful, thank you.”
“This way. Name’s John, by the way.” His grin returned.
Oh God—I’d recognized him. Glass chewing man. He had a name now.
I am ashamed to admit that I tried not to speak to him too much on the way to his cabin, despite his doing me a kindness. It’s so much harder to face death with names and histories attached. I remained standing outside his cabin door, looking incredibly guilty as he emerged and set into my hand the flashlight. When I turned it on, it sent a floodlight straight down the corridor one end to the other. In addition to this useful tool, the encounter brought a critical insight.
His clothes. Glass chewing involved a different outfit. So, the catastrophe would not strike tonight.
Pool deck
After brushing roughly a billion COLD hands, as the overnight crowd began thinning, I took myself out to a lounger (being unwilling to overnight in my cabin wreathed in the fumes of my own chargrilled corpse).
Voices woke me in the dead of night.
The moon and stars offered the only illumination over the pitch sea, and I shambled groggily to the rail. It struck me that the wind had died—the Seastar was stationary.
Out on the pale peaks of waves, a rescue craft bobbed up and down.
“Looks like some idiot went overboard,” complained a voice behind me.
A cluster of passengers had gathered. One—with the authority of an experienced cruiser—mentioned the possibility of a suicide jumper. “It shouldn’t affect our itinerary much,” declared the man. “These things happen at sea, you know. After the rescue, he or she—let’s call them Passenger X—will be taken to the infirmary and monitored by security…”
I didn’t hear the rest of his words, because I was too busy smacking my forehead as I burst, “The INFIRMARY!” Good fucking gracious, was my brain already barbecue? I suspected a contagion, yet hadn’t thought to search the infirmary? Snatching up my flashlight, I headed downstairs, but the lower decks were cordoned off.
A jovial crewman explained that passenger access was restricted during rescue operations.
“Also, it’s three in the morning,” he added, sipping coffee from a styrofoam cup. “The infirmary will open—I think around eight?”
“Which deck?”
“Deck two.” He gladly explained the layout when I asked. The lower decks also included crew quarters, a crew lounge, mess hall, the engine room, kitchens, food storage, the “highway” used for quickly trafficking trolleys from one end of the ship to the other, the infirmary, various machinery rooms, a brig, a morgue—“We mostly use it for like, chilling flowers and stuff like that though,” he added with a grin. There was also a third staircase near the stern of the ship—the aft stairwell—used regularly only by staff but opened to passengers in cases of emergency.
As he rattled off this list, I could feel myself plunging deeper into despair. This ship was so enormous, and so much of what lay below was off limits to passengers. Furthermore, there were no windows below! How was I going to make my way in the blackout? Even with John’s flashlight, the prospect was daunting.
But first things first, Cass, I told myself. The infirmary.
Infirmary
At 8am sharp I stepped into the infirmary. The waiting room was as ordinary as they come, complete with boring magazines and cheap office chairs and—because it was deep in the interior—pitch dark to my sleep-deprived eyes.
“Morning, Sweetie! How can I help you today?” The secretary at the front desk tipped her head toward me, revealing a glimpse of another face beneath my flashlight—mouth gaping and mangled, every tooth pulled out. Blissfully unaware that she was sharing her chair with her own corpse, the secretary smiled and gave me a clipboard of paperwork for check in.
While I filled out the forms by flashlight, footsteps shuffled near the desk, and the secretary struck up a conversation with someone I assumed was a nurse. My ears pricked when they gossiped about last night.
“… did you hear about the rescue? When they pulled him out of the water, he wasn’t breathing...”
I pretended to be engrossed in the forms.
“… As soon as they revived him, he started screaming and screaming.”
“Oh my god… seriously?”
“Yeah, and he was like, super aggressive. They had to sedate him.”
“Oh my god…”
“It’s really weird… they’re saying he might have come from another ship, and it might’ve been, like… days… that he was out on the water!”
So this Passenger X who was pulled in last night had just been drifting out on the ocean? He wasn’t a jumper? And he was “screaming and screaming”—like, perhaps, someone maddened? I was about to abandon my forms and search for this Passenger X when the secretary all but gave me a heart attack by materializing in front of me out of the dark. She took the paperwork and informed me the nurse was ready. I was directed to a small examination room—one of three, I noted as I swept my beam around the infirmary. Examining tables, chairs, computers. No sign of any screaming passenger. Where would they have brought him?
The nurse, a young woman in a hijab, asked me the typical questions, typing my responses into a computer with a cracked, dead screen.
“Is he all right? The man who was rescued?” I asked. “Was he drifting long?”
She responded pertly, “We’re still trying to ascertain. But don’t worry, he’s being helped—um….” Her brow scrunched as she shone a light into each of my eyes.
Of course. I forgot to warn her.
“That’s so strange…” she murmured. “Are you wearing contact lenses?”
“No. My eyes are very black. Even under a flashlight they don’t reflect any light. They’ve been that way since I was four years old. I was dead for nearly an hour from drowning, but revived, and everything came back normal except for my eyes.” I’d always believed my horrific visions were the result of my near-death experience, as if I wasn’t supposed to come back, and brought a little bit of death with me, just in my eyes.
“Wow! What a wild story!” The nurse exclaimed.
“You have no idea,” I replied, looking at her corpse peering out at me from under the examination table, all jammed around the base.
A knock on the door cut our exam short before I could warn her (not that it would make any difference). She asked me to wait for a few moments and stepped out.
When she did not immediately return, I slipped away in search of Passenger X.
Highway
The moment I stepped out of the infirmary and away from the nearby elevator lounge, it became evident I’d left the passenger areas. All veneer of luxury was stripped away, leaving bare walls interrupted only by occasional stacks of boxes. The flashlight’s wide beam swept along the massive corridor that I was guessing was the “highway.” My footsteps resounded on concrete. Nothing but sterile, windowless white—or at least it had been white, once.
I tried not to look too closely at the crimson streaking the walls or the corpses I stepped over. The origin of the contagion was definitely down here. Even through the napkin held over my nose, I could taste death here—
Hello? What was this?
In one section of the corridor, the walls and floor had rippled. Almost as if a shockwave had left indentations, bending and shattering the concrete. But what could have done that?
The lights flickered.
I froze.
It wasn’t my flashlight’s beam. That remained steady. The lights—the overhead lights—flickered, casting the hall in blinking flashes of crimson streaks and white walls.
Then the lights came on.
All the bodies vanished.
“Oh,” I said, blinking against the sudden brightness. “Oh.” The smell was gone, too. No scent of death. Though there was something else. A strangely metallic, tangy smell. Like lightning and copper.
I shut off my flashlight, turning a slow circle as I gawked at the stark white walls, the flat gray floor, the dazzling fluorescent lighting so bright it almost blinded me. It struck me that I was seeing the ship right now. Not six days in the future, but NOW, before the blackout, before the outbreak. The same whitewashed hallway as all the other passengers saw.
Why? What had happened to my vision? Had I lost my special sight? Or—
Someone was standing in the corridor.
I froze.
The hairs on my neck prickled, and a knot of dread twisted my gut.
The man stood halfway down the highway, slouched and bedraggled. His clothes were crushed and faded, hanging off him like from hangers of bone. His limp hair draped in messy curls around his unshaven face. And his eyes—those eyes! The same eyes I’d seen looking at me from the deep end of a public swimming pool when I was just a child. The same eyes I’d seen staring emptily from John’s glass-chewing corpse, and from the mangled nurse under the table. All the dead have the exact same look in their eyes. One glance at those pale blue orbs—
This man was dead. I was certain of it.
Yet he was standing.
“You,” I said. “You… are you the passenger who—”
The dead man’s lips spread, baring teeth in what might have been a sick imitation of a grin, or a grimace.
HEY!!!
I jumped as a voice called out behind me.
An officer in a security uniform strode out from an unmarked door, eyes on the dead man. The security officer said, “Ma’am, stay back.” His gaze never left the dead man. “Sir, if you could please come with me—”
“No!” I cried. “Don’t!”
But the security officer was already marching forward, and the dead man’s hands lifted in stiff parody of surrender. He turned and began shuffling away under the officer’s escort. And then—his teeth bared. Suddenly the dead man had his arm around the officer, mouth clamping on his ear as the officer howled. He was eating him—no, tongue wriggling—licking him?
—whispering?
The officer shoved the dead man aside and collapsed against the wall. I rushed forward, but skidded to a halt as the dead man’s grinning face turned toward me. Terror seized me at the sudden revelation that I was next. He took a wobbly step—
The lights shut off.
Swearing, I fumbled for my flashlight. Switched on the beam. Shrieked when it fell across a hand—but it was just the security officer reaching for me, asking, “Hey—hey, are you all right, Ma’am?” He winced, rubbing at his ear like a dog bothered by a whistle only it could hear. Then he said into his phone, “He assaulted me and got away. I’ve got another passenger here—”
The stench wafted back. Gore once again splattered the walls. I was once more seeing six days into the future, and clapped my napkin to my mouth to stop myself from retching at the return of the smell. But I wasn’t really thinking about all that.
No, because my heart slammed my ribs and my breath ripped ragged from my throat, and every hair stood on end as if I’d been struck by lightning. Whatever it was the crew of the Seastar had hauled from the ocean, it certainly hadn’t been living when they “rescued” it. And the proof was in those overhead lights. Merely being in proximity to Passenger X, my vision had been pulled into the present. Like he was a magnet drawing my sight into his field. But if death was the thing my black, lightless eyes usually glimpsed, then what exactly was Passenger X? And if he could affect my vision, not to mention animating a dead man’s corpse… how was I going to have any hope of stopping him?

2023.06.08 16:14 WeakSand-chairpostin Old Sparky

As Joe opened his eyes, he realized that something was terribly wrong. He felt a strange sensation, like pain mixed with something else, flowing through his body. And then, he noticed it - the electric chair, Old Sparky, in Sing Sing Prison.
"What is this?" Joe cried out, struggling with the restraints. "Why am I here?"
Old Sparky answered him in a deep, menacing voice. "You are here because you belong to me. You will stay strapped to me until you die of old age. But don't worry, staff will provide you with food, entertainment, and water. Just make sure you don't attempt to destroy me in any way, or you will be punished."
Every midnight, Old Sparky would administer a shock of 2000 volts at 7 amperes, until Joe almost died.
Joe's mind was racing as he tried to make sense of what was happening. He asked Old Sparky why it didn't hurt when it electrocuted him almost to death every night, and the chair replied that electrocution being painful is a myth. It told Joe about Willie Francis, the only person to have survived the electric chair the first time, who had said that it tickled him.
Joe felt a strange sensation, as if a million tiny fingers were tickling him all over his body. He could not help but laugh uncontrollably, along with the inability to breathe. This went on every night like clockwork - the tickling, laughing so hard he could hardly breathe, but the moment the shock faded, he was left shaking, feeling weak and powerless.
Days, weeks, and months passed without any change. Joe became used to his bizarre existence. The prison staff brought him meals, some books, and even a TV. Old Sparky continued to speak to him, offering bits and pieces of information about the world outside. Joe began to look forward to their daily chats, and on some level, he realized he felt something akin to affection toward the sentient chair.
But then something unexpected happened. Joe started to have dreams - dreams which were vivid, colorful, and full of life. He dreamed of seeing his family again, of feeling the Sun on his face, of experiencing the simple joys of life that he had taken for granted before. And for some reason, Old Sparky was always there in his dreams.
As the years passed, Joe began to realize that maybe he wasn't really a prisoner after all. Yes, he was trapped in Old Sparky, but he was also living a life that was full of its own unique experiences.
He started to see the world from a new perspective, to appreciate the small things, to find joy in moments of solitude. And while he knew he would never be a free man again, he also knew that he was no longer defined by his circumstances.
Old Sparky went on to recount how it had electrocuted Julius and Ethel Rosenberg in 1953. Joe shuddered at the thought, but there was something enchanting about Old Sparky's voice, something that made him feel comforted even though he should be terrified.
As the days turned into weeks, Joe began to feel that strange sensation every night. Instead of pain, he felt an intense tickling sensation all over his body. At first, he was scared, thinking that it was some new form of torture that Old Sparky had come up with. But the chair told him that it was just the sensation of electricity flowing through him, and that the tickling was completely normal.
With time, Joe began to look forward to his nightly electrocution, revelling in the feelings of joy and lightness that it brought. He would lay there, grinning from ear to ear, as every nerve in his body was stimulated by the electricity.
Old Sparky became his only friend in the world, the one constant in his life. Despite being a machine, it had a personality that was intelligent and deep. They would talk late into the night, discussing everything from philosophy to pop culture.
Though several prison wardens resigned, terrified by the chair and unable to explain what was happening, Joe remained. He lived his entire life in the electric chair, and he was happy. He had discovered a strange kind of love in the machine, with its endless intelligence and strange powers. Even if he did have the option, he did not want to get free of Old Sparky.
As he lay in the chair on his last night, with Old Sparky administering what would be his final shock, Joe felt at peace. He knew that he had found something magical in the chair, something that transcended his life and made it worth living. He whispered one last goodbye to Old Sparky, still grinning as the electricity raced through him, and then he was gone.

2023.06.08 16:07 ElectronsRuleMyLife How to develop that "Intuition"

Good Morning Everyone!
So I'm finding myself in a situation that I'm not sure how to move forward with.
A little history on myself, Prior to going back to college in 2017 for my EECE degree, I worked heavily in IT Systems Administration handling server maintenance, security patching, network deployment, satellite communications (operator level), and radio communications (operator level) for about 9 years total.
In 2017 I went back to school for Electrical Electronics and Computer Engineering (EECE), I graduated in the Fall of 2021 along with minors in Computer Science and Mathematics.
My EECE courses covered (wave top course topics): Digital Logic, Digital Systems, Telecomm Engineering, Computational Methods, MicrocontrolleMicroprocessors, Circuit Analysis in AC/DC, Fourier Analysis, Random Processes, EMAG, Comm Engineering (RF), Semiconductors, Power Electronics, Large Scale Power Systems, Control Systems, Semiconductors, Circuit analysis with MOSFETS and Diodes, Signal Processing, Computer Hardware Design, and my senior design project was a radio board for a cube satellite.
My CMPS courses covered: Programming fundamentals, Data Structures, Algorithms, Complexity Analysis, Discreet Logic, Software Methodology (Agile mostly). My Math went through Calc 1-3, DE, and Linear, and for programming languages I know C++, C#, Python, Java, Matlab, and VHDL.
It may just be a time thing, but I feel like I don't have the intuition that I had in IT. In my previous roles, when a problem or challenge presented itself, I just kind of knew where to begin and what threads to pull to accomplish my task. I just don't feel like I know things that I should such as, what type components and what values to use if I'm designing a circuit to accomplish a task.
I shouldn't be complaining too much because I had a job right out of college and when I relocated to another site, the previous manager left and because I had military leadership experience, I was recommended for the manager position and have been doing that since December 2022. I lean heavily on my team because I don't feel like I have the full knowledge set they have. I know where my weakness are, and I'm hiring to fill those gaps, and I give credit where credit is due. I just feel like I made a huge jump and didn't put in my time to develop myself as an engineer before jumping into management, and I've always prided myself on my technical abilities.
Any advice on how to develop that intuition and knowledge? I don't mind having to refer back to resources and do some more study.

2023.06.08 16:07 triple_hoop How to protect a laptop from voltage fluctuations?

I own an Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 laptop, and recently, the display stopped working. After having it checked by an Asus technician, I was informed that the issue was caused by voltage fluctuations. My initial thought was to purchase a UPS, but I don't require backup power, and most UPS models (with a 600 KVA rating) provide a 6A output, while my laptop's charger (280W) requires a 16A plug. This raises doubts about whether it would be a suitable solution.
Considering that I live in a rented house and cannot make any electrical changes, I'm wondering what other options are available to address this problem.

2023.06.08 15:54 abovethesink EVs in the most extreme cold weather

Hi guys! I have been considering going electric when it is time to replace our hybrid, but I struggle to find a lot of info on what I need to know. The vast majority of info I find googling around about the performance of EVs in the cold are not helpful because they are significantly warmer than the climate where I live. It is great to know how an EV will perform when it is below freezing, or even down to 0 Fahrenheit. Those are warm to average days in the winter here though. What if we go 72 hours straight without getting above -10 even midday? What if we see -40 three nights in a row? That stuff doesn't happen every single winter, but it will definitely happen multiple times in the five to seven year lifespan that I typically keep a vehicle. And it will routinely be around -20 at night in the winter.
I know how to deal with a gas powered vehicle in those conditions. Don't let them sit idle for more than a few hours or use an engine block heater. The main point of failure though is the battery. That's what you are trying to stop from freezing up, basically. That and some fluids. But if the car is all battery, how does that end up going? Is keeping the battery plugged into the charger sufficient to make sure your car will run in the morning if it sits idle for say 12 hours at negative 25 Fahrenheit? If so, will any level charger accomplish that or do you need a certain level charger at your home?
Any anecdotes from extreme cold climates would be appreciated!
