2023.03.20 16:01 smita16 What’s before a beginner?

So I started practicing piano a little over a month ago. I have weekly lessons and practice about 30 min a day. I have been working through the alberts book.
But when I try to find other sheet music just for fun the “beginner” songs are still waaaay outside my league. lol

2023.03.20 15:37 Spidersfromvenus Celebration Day

Her face had looked bad, and got worse. Paler, if that were possible. It was uncertain what exactly had gone on before, though some happy dancing had occurred, it appeared, and some fun had been had. Something that soon went wrong?
Graham and Paul were in the bar, in the Antelope, where Paul had talked with Ron. They (Paul and Graham) were also there another time, once, after the car windscreen semi-smashed, from a small stone, and just shattered all across to make it impossible to see, at 60mph. Scared, on that occasion, about what could have happened as the Imp was nervously slid over the lanes of the motorway to safety, but with only the side windows to work with. Like sometimes happens with unknown sheets of water, or even oncoming headlights. Driving, fast, into blindness.
Today, though, they are in this same pub because of two friends' wedding, at a nearby house. A house where the speeches are going on, as they drink, which makes no sense at all as the drink at the wedding would be free. But they are going to have to play, Paul and Graham, given that they are the band. Or, part of it, where the rest of the band has stayed put, with other guests, except the singer, who hasn't even arrived due to a problem with the law.
The ceremony went off fine. Paul's dad had played the organ, including dealing with the request for 'A Whiter Shade of Pale'. The fear related to that particular bit, over, for Paul. His dad, invited back afterwards, and thanked, but gone, with careful apologies.
More to come, though. Including a different request, made by the married couple (mostly by the groom) for 'Stairway to Heaven.' We weren't really that kind of a band. We did the blues and twelve bars, mostly twelve bars, and more rhythm and blues than straight blues. Sure, we had done some Grand Funk Railroad. We had used the drums from one Grand Funk song ('Mark Says Alright') at one time, to introduce whole shows. In fact, on the very first time that the band played (formed then, as a three piece) with the venue a church, we ploughed through 'Into the Sun'. Calling it, into the son.
A five piece, now, with that standalone singer and a good bassist, solid rhythm man, Paul on drums, and Graham on lead.
Except, for Stairway, it wouldn't be that way. Paul and Graham would swap. Paul, who had never ever played guitar in front of an audience before, was going to do it at a wedding that the parents had paid a fortune for, and here they were, in the lightning bar, getting roasted. Not unhappy, I stress. Getting roasted before gigs was no new thing, and part of the pleasure, but all the same.
'You okay,' Graham asked.
'Yeah, you?' Sometimes, they might overdo it. Instead of taking the edge off the nerves, they could take the edge off the whole show.
'Another Sherbet?'
Never got to the bottom of why he used that word.
Finally, they made their way back over. People at the venue might otherwise have worried, but they were too engrossed to have really noticed.
It was all going to kick off in a big marquee. 'You're playing The Marquee, then?' people said. Over and over, the same joke. We had only one song, of our own. Wardour Street was never on our minds. We never, ever, wanted to be rich of famous, perhaps knowing we couldn't. We had joy, and a following.
(We once played at some place, where, when we walked in towards the hall before, the support band were playing 'Sylvia', by Focus. They were copying it so well that we thought it was the record. Fuck. But no one was listening. When we got on ourselves, and started up with our trademark drum rhythm opening, the floor filled. It happens with so many bands. People are waiting for 'Quo', or 'Hawkwind', or whoever, and the support fades into the wallpaper. We were never those kinds of bands, in terms of skill or potential impact, but we liked them. We hacked out the odd 'Quo' number.
(Graham also liked Creedence. He liked Lodi, about going from town to town and playing to people who might or might not have given a damn, and then moving on. He did also like 'Travellin' Band'. But that song is much more upbeat, in all kinds of ways, and we did eventually include it, ourselves.)
Maybe nothing ever quite beats the feeling, of waiting to go on. And then, when you start, if it goes well, the new feeling, suggesting that you are listening to a bit of good old rock and roll, rather than actually playing it. Somehow, it is starting to take care of itself? You've practised, and you know, and it's all coming together?
Kick off.
Drum rhythm. 'Wipe Out'. A hard one, to dive into without loosening up, for Paul, on those drums. Then Graham comes in, along with the rest of the band, but with the singer still not on stage. (The best time ever, with our introductions, we went straight into 'Mustang Sally', as song number two. But we were some way off that, back at this wedding.)
Yes, drunk. But we were fine. We still have the (once a tape) CD, except Graham can never listen to it, unless there's an afterlife. We rocked along ok, we got to the time. We swapped instruments, Graham and me. As indicated, first time ever, for that, though not the last.
We started Stairway. Well, Paul did. But then had to stop, because the bride wasn't there. The whole point of the thing was for the bride and groom, so she had to be fetched. Finally, a bit more nervously (despite the lake of lager) we (he) started again. Stops are bad. Audiences stand still, they talk, they lose momentum. And, if the next song isn't able to pick that momentum back up again...
It's slow, Stairway. For a long, long time. We all started to lose confidence, except Graham. Graham drummed through, start to finish. Hats off!
There's a solo. Which Paul's sister had needed to unpick on the piano, from a record slowed down to 16rpm, before then she'd given him the score. He couldn't work it out, otherwise. Amazing, sister. But he forgot to turn on the serious harmonics, when approaching it, when charging towards the rousing ending. He forgot to add effect. Every note is there, listening back, but like with a piano where the sustain pedal has broken (which has also happened to Paul, in a pub, paid, doing the 'Piano Man' thing.)
It exists, as a moment in history. I don't much like to listen to it. 'Route 66' is a different kettle of fish. It comes later in the set. All the worries gone, now. Dad, home. Stairway, kind of climbed. Rocking it. And Graham nails it, 'Route 66', right through. The whole band, solid, the lead perfect. Not the only time, but the first when it was recorded, and it was hot.
Enough, for now, at that point. Brilliant, my friend.
_ _ _
'Celebration Day' is another Zeppelin Song, like Stairway. And, a bit like Whiter Shade, its verses and choruses seem to tell conflicting stories. But the chorus is so uplifting.
So, so happy. Gonna join a band. Dance, sing, celebrate. Promised land. With a solo, which dances to a slightly different chord backing, and is super fine, and uplifting.
It can be like that, sometimes. Even for people like Paul. He needs to do more of that.
Sometimes, even, he needs to dance without the crutch of a guitar, but quite a lot of people use that particular crutch. Along with other crutches.
But we head, I hope, toward 'Independence Day'. Where music, or alcohol, or personal histories, are only ever used as positive influences, in that sought for (and combined) voice. Where maybe Paul can finally write things which have a real chance of him being quietly proud of, and where others may enjoy if they wish.
Music will never disappear, from Pauls' work. Other influences are bound to remain, too. But maybe they can be used differently, or better?
When all is one, and one is all. A rocking good way.
Maybe.

2023.03.20 15:23 retnatalos24 Is it worth coming back to Destiny 2

This is a very different post and I am sorry if the title is misleading, but I need some advice on what to do. This community has been nothing but nice to me for a very long time.

Earlier in whatever season the kings fall reprised raid I quit Destiny 2 because I realized I was addicted to it. I originally started playing in the season of the splicer and I have spent over 2000 hours on the game. I had bad hygiene, did not exercise, barely had any social interaction, and my parents were concerned for me, I even dropped some of my favorite things like playing piano for Destiny 2. But I am proud to say that I had fixed all of that 100%. You do not have to believe me, but I have started going to the gym and never skipping any days, I spend tons of time with friends, I started learning super hard music on piano and started working with a teacher, and I have really good hygiene and even started using skincare products, but my clan-mates want me to start playing again. I also miss raiding and the gunplay, however, the light-level grind still scares me. The new expansion also looks cool ( I preordered it during the first day it was available in a vicious few minutes ) and I want to try out the new darkness power. However, I feel like I have missed out on a lot since I last played like seasonal content or exotics, etc.

In short, I just don't want to lose all of the real-life progress I have made, and I don't know if it's a good idea to come back after cleaning myself up. ( I have been playing other games with friends in the time that I stopped playing )
Again I am sorry if this post is weird or if it sounds like I am bragging or telling people to touch grass, but I truly need some advice from this community.
Thank you for reading all of this and any responses are very very nice.

2023.03.20 15:22 VeganTeetotaler [Meet Report] 2023 USA Powerlifting Maine State Championships 32F 322.5/710.9 @ 59.65/131.5 BW 358.83 DOTS Raw

This Saturday I had my fourth meet; knowing the meet directors were Andrew Graves and Erik Hogan (hi guys!) I knew this was going to be a fun meet but even those high expectations were exceeded. We had a smoke machine, tunnel, third attempt music selection, and lifter bios. The venue was also perfect and well worth the 1.25 hour drive.
TL;DR this was my best meet yet and I’m still riding the high.

This was my first meet with a coach and his programming did more for especially my bench and deadlift in 11 weeks than Candito did all year (no hate to Candito; I still recommend it!) My original plan was to wait until after this meet because of the short amount of time between this and my December meet, but Erik was closing his roster as of 1/1/23 and I jumped on the chance to work with him. I’m not going to lie, I was very nervous about the timeframe and also letting go of the control you have as a self-coached lifter. For example, selection attempts. Usually I plan these a month out based on a 1RM max test; for this meet, I didn’t test my 1RM and didn’t get my attempts until a week out. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing but it was just different and I had to trust I could hit the weights even though I didn’t do a test run. I also don’t normally do anything the week before the meet, but my program had me lifting on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday then resting Thursday Friday.
The last two weeks of training were brutal, both because of some personal stuff going on (I have a toddler and those motherfuckers do not care one bit if you need to train or sleep) and physically. I am not going to lie I skipped a lot of accessories two weeks out. I cut a lot out of my program one week out, and Wednesday I only worked up to my top set and then went to bed. I don’t deal with fatigue well and I knew if I pushed it I’d fuck up my already shitty knee, my already shitty pec, or my already shitty back.
Weight wise I did my normal routine: freak out that I’m a few pounds over, start drinking water instead of eating icecream on Wednesday, weigh in just fine on meet day. In hindsight I’m kicking myself for not dropping another half a pound, for reasons that will be clear later.
Meet day
I slept like shit. I had nightmares all night about meet-related stuff including being late, my coach firing me, not being able to find the venue, etc. I was awake before my 430 alarm. But maybe the tiredness relieved some of my nerves because this is the first meet I’ve done where I didn’t think I was going to throw up. It also helped I made a lot of friends at the July meet I did last year and I walked in knowing I’d have that support system.
Also shout out to the weigh in judge who very kindly asked if I was really gonna open with 248kg or if that was in pounds. It was in pounds.
Squat:
112.5/248
120/264
125/275
All white lights even with three National judges and all easy AF. My third attempt at my last meet was 264 and that was a fucking grind but I only had a tiny sticking point at 275. I was super amped up and missed Erik’s double fist bump and accidentally punched him in the chest. My bad.
Squat followed by bench
Bench:
52.5/116
57.5/126
60/132
I finally got a BW bench! I bombed 126 at my last meet so that was huge. I had asked Erik to let me test 130 a few weeks ago because he had me capped at 125 and I felt my bench blowing up; he agreed and I’m glad he did because this was a huge milestone for me that I’ve been wanting since I started lifting and not one I was scheduled to hit yet. Again, all white lights.
Deadlift:
120/264
130/286
137.5/303
I never thought I’d hit a 300lb lift. When I bought my first bar five years ago it said it had a 300lb limit and I thought “yeah I’ll never come anywhere close to reaching that!” Well bitches I did it and I even thought “huh, I thought 300 would feel heavy”. No red lights anywhere here either.
Deadlift
The Results
9/9 for the first time ever, first total over 700, PRs all around, zero red lights in any of my attempts for the first time ever, broke all six of my own state records (I’m the only open 60kg lifter in Maine lol) and had a fucking blast.
Despite the announcer reminding me every time I went up that I was ranked 8th in the state, I came in a very close 4th (358.83 DOTS vs third place 359.68). Had I lifted 2.5kg more or weighed .5 a pound less, I would have been third and been on the podium for the first time. I am kicking myself for not dropping that little bit of extra weight but I honestly expected to come in around 8th as projected so I was only focused on staying in my class. Overall I’m very happy with my results and I am ecstatic to see what I can do in June.
I also can’t recommend enough getting a coach if you’re on the fence. I pushed myself harder in training because instead of choosing my own attempts I had to earn them. I looked at the “if it feels easy” path and knew I was going to hit those numbers but I had to prove I could. Each time Erik said we could go with the higher number I felt a surge of confidence because someone else (who knows what they’re talking about) was showing they were also confident in my abilities. I didn’t have to worry about when to warm up or what to warm up with because I had someone to say “warm up now with this weight”. I didn’t have to grab my attempt sheet and tell the judges because I had someone doing it for me. I only had to focus on eating, hydrating, and lifting. It was liberating.

2023.03.20 15:11 autumngloss Advice on whether or not I should quit

Hi I am looking for advice on whether or not I should quit piano.
I started weekly lessons about two years ago. In those two years I got through alfred piano book 1 for adults (I did take 5 months off for end of pregnancy and maternity leave). I started again around Thanksgiving. For the past few months I have been so unmotivated to practice and dread lessons. It feels like a chore. Is this a normal funk or is this a sign I am done? I want to continue bc I have invested a lot of money and time, I have learned a lot, I like hearing piano music. I want yo quit bc I am unmotivated to practice and I feel like I don’t enjoy practicing. What do you think?

2023.03.20 15:09 Flimsy-Rip129 20F looking for some nice people to get to know :)

Hey I’m Emma and I’m from Germany.
Looking for some nice people and maybe we can even build a friendship :)
Preferably from Europe and please be around my age.
My interests are:
• Polymer clay I like to create small charms or figurines. Maybe I try making dioramas and miniatures out of clay in the future
• Miniature painting Didn’t do that yet but have some Mandalorians from Star Wars legion here and ordered a few other Star Wars minis. Really wanna try painting them.
• Cooking I loveeee experimenting and just being creative with what I have or to try something new. Always open to here what other people like to cook :D
• Reading I don’t really have specific genre I just read anything if I think the story might be good and interesting. But I do love the books by TJ Klune and can’t wait to read more of his books.
• Music I listen to music all the time. Mostly nightcore or Lofi Nintendo songs. Besides that I wanna get back into playing the piano as I really like doing that it’s just very relaxing and fun. And maybe I try to learn playing the guitar but not sure yet.
• Gaming (Survival) sandbox games are awesome. Just let your creativity have fun. But also rainbow six and I really like Mario and Zelda games.
If that was interesting enough just hit me up and make a little introduction of yourself then :) I will ignore everyone who just says „hi“ or „how are you“ or something similar. Just put at least some effort into this.
Btw I’m lgbt and currently in a very nice relationship.

2023.03.20 14:59 ehud42 Mic position for vocal pianist with sheet music

Mic position for vocal pianist with sheet music
Running into some challenges with a live group I run the sound system for. The pianist and keyboardist do not get close enough to the mic. I am struggling with poor sound, feedback, signal/noise, etc.
They can't see their sheet music.
I'm not very good/experienced at this, and the group is not a professional live group. So we're fumbling.
Anyone got some images/pictures of setups where someone is singing while playing the piano and the microphone is not obscuring their view of the sheet music?
And of course - we're limited on the budget, so right now we are using basic SM58's on generic mic boom stands.

2023.03.20 14:51 ArourasAlt After playing with this party for 3-4 years, after numerous campaigns, I am starting to grow tired of their shortcomings. [Long]

Alt account because a couple of my players follow my Reddit, but I don't think any of them frequent this subreddit specifically, at least I hope. If this story turns out to be riveting enough for someone to want to turn it into a YouTube short or something: pleease don't. I do not want my players to see this.
I am a more experienced player who has been playing TTRPGs for a good number of years now, having DMed for groups besides this one multiple times. This is my only in-person group, all others have been online, and have mostly gone much more smoothly, although none have lasted quite as long as my in-person group. I am at college (16-18) with most of the players, so I see them almost every day, and the rest are players I went to school with at one part or another, and speak with frequently. I love this game, and I love DMing for my players when everything works out, and when the game runs cohesively, but sessions like that are few and far between, and I am at my wits end.

Party Members:
Me: The DM
Host: The Host, obviously present for all sessions
Edgelord: Playing since Dragon of Icespire Peak
Bard: Played only Dragon of Icespire Peak
The Dreaded One: Playing since Campaign 1
Powergamer: Joined partway through Curse of Strahd
Friend 1: Joined for Curse of Strahd
Friend 2: Joined for Lost Mine of Phandelver
Currently playing: Me, Host, Edgelord, TDO, Powergamer, Friend 2.

Around three or four years ago, one of my friends (Host) approached me, asking if I would consider helping set up a campaign, that he would host and DM, as, at the time, I did not have a table in my house that could seat five. Host had a desire to keep the party very small, which has been a theme every time that he has DMed (he will not DM for any more than four) which I do not have a problem with, so the players that were invited were Me (High Elf Wizard), Bard (Wood Elf Bard), The Dreaded One (Human Cleric) and Edgelord (Human Rogue). The campaign was Dragon of Icespire Peak, which comes in the starter set, along with Lost Mine of Phandelver. I was the only person with any experience at the time, so I helped out with planning/rules while the party got adjusted, but Bard and Edgelord caught on quickly. I was the only player at the table who really did any sort of RP (which again is fine - new players and all that) and the other players made stock characters with very little in the way of personality, but the campaign was fun enough. I have comparatively few complaints, the normal stuff - murderhobo rogue, horny bard, that sort of thing, as well as the Bard's tendancy to play loud meme music on his phone to "play his lute." There was only one occasion where the party went too far, and the DM and I had to step in and take a time out, when Bard and Edgelord decided that they wanted to break into the Townmaster's bedroom, tie him up, and shove a POLE OF COLLAPSING up his ass. Safe to say, the DM said no. This campaign was the start of The Dreaded One's apparent lack of interest - he didn't learn how his spells worked, and spent most of the campaign on his phone.
There was a lull in DnD part-way through Dragon of Icespire Peak, after we all took a break for the holidays, and for a few months, we didn't play at all. It was increasingly dificult to manage to get all the players togeather for a session, largely due to one player: Bard. Bard had just gotten into a relationship, and was spending every hour with his new girlfriend - whatever, we didn't really mind - but we asked if he could set asside one afternoon a week to play DnD, as he had before. He said that he "couldn't commit that much time," so Host, wanting to finish the campaign, suggested that we do it once every two weeks, which Bard also disagreed with, as he would be too busy. Ultimately, we never finished Dragon of Icespire Peak, as Bard was eventually ousted from our friend-group for unrelated reasons. Host confessed to us that he didn't particularly enjoy DMing for long stretches of time, and would like to try being a player instead, which was completely fine; I volunteered to DM in his stead, as the most senior player, and offered the group a choice between Waterdeep Dragon Heist, and Curse of Stahd, with the notion that they would get to play both, and were just deciding what they wanted to play first. Relpacing Bard, Host invited Friend 1, and Curse of Strahd ultimately won out as the next adventure.
As I share in the Host's proclivity towards smaller parties, we decided that four was enough, and so the party we began Death House with was as follows: Host (Half-Orc Barbarian) Edgelord (Drow Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Halfling Artificer) and Friend 1 (Satyr Druid.) The characters were, again, a little flat, but the players started to RP a lot more than they had during the last campaign, so I was happy enough. I did have a problem with The Dreaded One being on his phone again - as it turns out, he was watching Strippers vs. Werewolves on Netflix while I was DMing, which itched me to no end. I could not (and cannot) for the life of me get TDO to interact with the game in any meaningful way - he would not take actions, he would not roleplay, he would not engage in combat beyond rolling his 1d8 crossbow every turn. As it later turned out, TDO did not know he had ANY spells, so I sat with him before the session and explained what all his spells did, and how he could use them. I can count on one hand the number of times he used a spell in that entire, ten-level campaign. One session, The Dreaded One came up to me and said "I have read the Artificer class info now, I know what I am doing now!"
That was the campaign's final session.
Towards the end of Death House, Powergamer asked if he could sit in on a session and watch, but said that he understood that the table was full and wouldn't be able to play. I left the decision up to Host, who said yes, for one session, which went relatively okay. Later that night, both Host and I recieved a text from Powergamer asking if he could join the campaign. Host and I each said that we were okay with it if the other was - I had DMed for parties of five before - and so he joined as an Aracockra Paladin. PG spent much of the campaign optimising his paladin, which I didn't really have too much of a poblem with, until he began to outshine other players - Friend 1 and Edgelord were getting frustrated that, comparartively, their impact on combat was comparatively minor. This culimated in the player leveraging his Fly ability to cheese encounters (until I began having a lot of them indoors) and ultimately bodying the BBEG in a way that a lot of the other players found quite unsatisfying. Part way through Curse of Strahd, I began to notice that Edgelord was becoming something of a problem player, murderhoboing as she had done in DoIP, attempting to burn down the Wizard of the Wines Vineyard, which made the party unhappy.
I sent Edgelord, The Dreaded One and Friend 1 videos on spell slots and (in Edgelord's case) info on sorcery points and metamagic, which only Friend 1 watched. I had not realised this until Edgelord seemed to cast Fireball a few too many times, and I asked her if she was using a number of sorcery points equal to the spell slot's level when she created them. As it turns out, she had been getting fireballs for one sorcery point the whole time. I told her that was wrong, but not to worry and just keep it in mind going forward, but she jumped to her own defence and insisted "you didn't tell me that was how it worked." Right. Because it's my job to tell you how to play your character. The argument escalated and the session drew to a close two hours early, because nobody could get Edgelord to come back to the table. A similar thing happened when Edgelord wanted a moment to roleplay to explore her backstory, and essentially bolted exposition onto the end of a session which she recieved from a "flash of light," and read the backstory that she had sent me the night prior (five levels into the campaign) to me, only to be dissapointed that it "wasn't how she wanted to do it." Additionally, she took a level in Hexblade Warlock, and I offered her the choice of either getting the level outright, or waiting for an RP moment to make a deal with a demon - she chose the latter. That's fine, I planned something for the next session, but she wanted to do it immediately, and I told her "No, you don't have all the items you'd need to summon a devil or anything - why would you have that with you?" to which she got upset, so I asked her to be patient, but again, the situation escalated and shouting ensued, and the session ended early. (I admittedly didn't help, but EL was constantly undermining me in and out of the game, and I was getting frustrated.) After almost every session, even when something didn't go wrong, she would say "I'm thinking about stopping doing DnD, I'm really not enjoying it." I asked her what she wanted me to do differently, but I never got an answer beyond "I don't know."
When I ran the dinner with Strahd in CoS, I had strahd give each of the players a magic item - I thought it would be a neat little bit of flavour, and a nice gift for getting this far into the campaign. The alcoholic barbarian was given A Decanter of Endless Wine, for example, and the illiterate Druid got a Helm of Comprehend Languages. Edgelord got her gift (I can't even remember what it was) and was dissapointed with it, so asked instead for "a ring that would give me the powers of a vampire but not be under BBEG's control." What. Obviously the answer was no. Thus ensued one of my least favourite sessions, where the party antagonised the (supposedly intimidating) Strahd Von Zarovitch, where Powergamer, The Dreaded One, Edgelord, and even Host called him "a little cum boy" to his face, and continued to insult him. The tonal dissonance really threw me off, and I didn't know what to do - they weren't taking my campaign seriously, and I honestly felt insulted, it was hugely upsetting. I called the session short and eventually got an apology form PG and Host, and ran the event more smoothly the next week, but it still rubs me the wrong way. Towards the end of the campaign, I started to notice my players struggling to pay attention - I distinctly remember reading out the description Kasmimir Velikov's hovel, looking up, and seeing each and every player on their phones. I snapped and shouted at them (which I really ought not to have done, in hindsight) and tried to explain how disheartening it was that it nobody was paying attention, and got a few apologies, though the problem never really fixed itself until the end of the campaign.
The end of the campaign was pretty good IMO, with each of the players choosing ultimately to stay in Barovia with the friends they made. The Barbarian moved into the Blue Water Inn with the Martikovs as a barkeep, the paladin returned to the Old Bonegrinder windmill and made it his home, the Druid married Ireena and adopted Viktor Vallakovich, and the Sorcerer, for siding with Strahd, was imprisoned, but iltimately released, and grew old with her wife and kids in the abbey of Kretzk. Running the adventure had been exhausting, so I requested a break between it and Waterdeep Dragon Heist, so Powergamer offered to run Lost Mines of Phandelver, and Host ran two one shots, so that I could recooperate. PG invited a sixth player, Friend 2, from College, who I helped make a character. The process was stressful, arduous, and full of "I don't knows" and "this is too hards," before, after an entire evening, we had a passable Wood Elf Rogue. LMoP's party was Fiend 1 (Goblin Rogue) Friend 2 (Wood Elf Rogue) Host (Halfling Rogue) Me (Half-Elf Cleric) Edgelord (Half-Orc Bloodhunter) and The Dreaded One (Air Genasi Ranger.) Similar problems ensued, with TDO not interacting with the party and being on his phone, and Edgelord antagonising both me and PG. Host and I fell into a role of the party face, as we were the most confident players, though we did learn to take a back seat once and a while, and Friend 1 and 2 managed to get quite a bit of time in the limelight. PG made the campaign very combat heavy, and the sessions were very long (9+ hours with nothing in the way of breaks) so I struggled to make it through it.
It later came out that PG had promised his partner that, while he wouldn't be able to handle a seventh player, that she could play in the next campaign, as I would be able to handle it. I wasn't told about this, neither was Host, and neither of us were happy with having six players, nevermind seven. I have ran campaings with seven players before, usually oneshots, but this is not the group for it - they have a major issue of talking over both me and eachother, which would be so, so, so exhausting wiht an additional player. When this ultimately came to light, I had to explain that no, I would not take on another player, I didn't even want to DM for six, so PG messaged Friend 2 and asked them if they would be able to sit out of the next campaign so that their girlfriend could play. This upset F2 as they had only just gotten involved and were now asked to step out, and pissed me off as PG had gone behind my back yet again.
Host ran two oneshots, a Western, and a Pirate campaign. The first had the biggest issues - it was Me (Reborn Genie Warlock) Host's GF (Earth Genasi Fiend Warlock) Edgelord (Human Hexblade Warlock) and PG (Variant Human Gunslinger Custom Lineage). Edgelord was livid when she found out that there were three warlocks at the table, because we had all stolen her idea. Host set the expectation that this was going to be an RP-heavy oneshot, but PG brought an optimised character with a 20 in Dex at level one and a ridiculous bonus to hit, and, of course, stomped the two encounters we had before any of the rest of us could make a meaningful addition to it. He then proceeded to use action surge and killed the boss in one hit before BBEG got to monologue or any of us could interact with him. The Pirate Campaign was Me (Tortle Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Human Fighter??) Friend 2 (Triton Bard) and Edgelord (Human Hexblade Warlock). I had a repeat with Friend 2's character sheet, which took hours of discussion, lots of "I don't knows," and a healthy serving of frustration before it was finished. Though the campaign itself went fine, except TDO on his phone.
We have just started Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, with me as the DM, where I decided to ban Tasha's Custom Lineages from my table, as Edgelord and Powergamer had used it to powergame, and I generally like racial bonuses more than custom lineages anyway. As Friend 1 dropped out due to being busy with college, and feeling guilty about party size, she dropped out, so the party is back down to five: Host (Dragonborn Wizard) Powergamer (Variant Human Rogue) Friend 2 (Astral Elf Sorcerer) The Dreaded One (Gnome Sorcerer) and Edgelord (Kalashtar Hexblade Warlock). I had a repeat of the Friend 2 situation again as I was helping them make their character. I ended up having to pitch all the ideas and they chose one they liked. Powergamer's concept was a dcotor who was helped by four ghosts which spoke to him (that I have to play, all of which had their own personalities and backstories.) The Dreaded One surprised me when he sent me his character sheet - despite a pretty silly name, the character was well thought out and grounded in the lore of Waterdeep, a sorcerer who worked at the Font of Knowledge, the Temple of Ogmha, in Waterdeep. I liked it, I got really excited, and thought that TDO would finally get involved. He hasn't thus far, and spends most of the game on his phone. Edgelord, Host and Powergamer tend to joke around a lot, which I don't mind as much as I did in CoS, as the setting is more lighthearted, but it is beocming dificult for me to read out descriptions and narrate the story cohesively, as I have to wait 2 or 3 minutes whenever they start talking.
Every session I have to interrupt and say "this took a lot of planning for me, and I need you to listen. Its upsetting when you talk over me the way you do," and they behave for the rest of the session, and then its the same problem next week. Last week, snowing meant that we couldn't run the campaing at Host's house, so we decided to do it on discord, which actually went pretty well - it was actually an improvement on their recent behaviour, though there were a few distractions here and there, those can't really be helped. However, we only got to do half of a session as, when Host, Edgelord and The Dreaded One went to get food, Powergamer went to his girlfriend's house without telling anyone, and so we were waiting for a good half an hour before we ask where he is, and the session comes to a screeching halt.
It sounds like I have a lot of issues with this party - and I do - but I really love DMing for them when they're doing their job. It is so fun when I can watch Host interact with Powergamer and Edgelord in-character, and Friend 2 is really coming into their own as a roleplayer as well, i'm just really struggling to keep going with all the problems they have as a party.
- The Dreaded One: Doesn't pay attention, never roleplays, does bare minimum in combat
- Edgelord: Argumentative, rude, strops and stops sessions halfway before finishing, complains about how they dont like the game.
- Friend 2: Helping them make characters is frustrating and dificult, as they have few ideas and little patience.
- Powergamer: Powergames endlessly, rules lawyers, aranges things behind my back.
- Host: Tends to hog the spotlight, but is improving. Generally the player I have the least issue with.
I love playing DnD, and I lvoe playing it in-person with this party, but they make it so diifcult for me. I am not a perfect DM by any means, and I have let the situation get too out of hand. I plan to finish this campaign and then make some changes to the party, invite some new people, but I know that if I stop some people form coming, there will be drama, and I see these people every day.
With both Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Storm King's Thunder sitting under my desk begging to be played, what do you guys think I should do? How do I get my players to improve?

2023.03.20 14:32 HooliGan1420 21M - I bid thee a humble welcome into my very straightforward but amazingly long post. Feel free to explore, laugh and be charmed if you may ^^

Halloha, my name's Gian. Nice to meet you!- is what I would say in a formal setting.
But hence you found me in my area of comfort, welcome to my humble abode. Would you like some tea? That actually reminds me i gotta buy some stevia... Dang.
Anyway anyway I'm starting to babble lol, if you're wondering what I'm here for, it's for talking to you, interesting person out there wherever may you be. I love talking to people and sharing events in my life or random stuff, if you're on the same boat then you get my excitement. Making friends this way is amazing so therefore I presented myself!
If details are something you're into hearing, i can give you lots:
-I have to refuel every day almost cuz i go through an entire tank in 2 days or less. Love driving around.
-I'm a car mechanic, currently working at a workshop for car suspension and alignments. Saving every penny I get.
-What am I saving up for? Well it's big, pretty massive in fact. So massive i could write an entire letter about it... Huh... Would it be cheeky if I said you can ask about this in your message? Would be a good idea.
-Currently in a "I'll start next week" break from gym, came back from a big trip and I'm kinda settling back into my hometown. I also do cycling, practice jumps and tricks at the bike park and do motorcycle and karting races. (Other categories and car racing are a work in progress, will upgrade soon)
-Music taste: this is the part where you look at a bunch of hyperbabble about bands that don't make a lot of sense unless you heard them, but I'll just throw a buncha names and you can see if any of the following applies: Radiohead, Megadeth, Fishmans, Marillion, The Black Keys, Queens of The Stone Age, Buckethead, Alphaville, Dire Straits, Little River Band, David Bowie, XTC, UB40, Commodores, Creedence Clearwater Revival.
-Ultramegahyper car and motorcycles fan, but in the weirdest way possible. My dream cars are actually cheap french hot hatches like the 306 and a 90's Renault Clio. The car I'd get first no matter what is a 1998 Ford Focus. If possible the RS version. And as for motorcycles I want a Kawasaki ZXR, 80's style. Also love German cars, especially old BMW's, first one I'd get is an e32 with the M70 V12 engine. Also love old Volkswagens and Audis, without a doubt would own an 80's Audi with one of their 5 cylinder engines and turbocharge it. Also very fond of japanese cars and will own a Nissan in any form possible, especially the 350z
-Played almost every Need For Speed game that ever released, started my journey with the franchise through Underground, and played every release as they launched. (yes even Undercover, I actually enjoyed it). I listen to the soundtracks of old NFS games in my free time. Also played Midnight Club, Forza, Assetto Corsa, FlatOut, Burnout, BeamNG... I COULD KEEP GOING.
-Not everything in my life is about cars though, my day is dedicated to music too, especially playing piano. I'm also a guitar and bass player. And really want to get more sound gear and instruments in the future (Cars and music gear? I'll be broke all the time)
-I'm relatively organized, but living by myself has shown me that being the only person inside the house, I leave stuff around unless somebody visits. But while living with my parents I didn't make any mess anywhere so I'm not an absolute demon.
-Yes, living by myself also requires me to cook and I'm actually an amazing cook. I include lots of seasoning and veggies into the meals, even soy to balance things out and eggs for protein. Learned lots while being independent.
-Fun facts about me to end this: The amount of clothes I have in total is so small that i can wash them all in one washing machine load, the house machine size. I also have 3 different pillows around me at all times cuz I don't like laying on a flat surface. I listen to music even while showering. And I own a dog that requires me to feed her on a daily basis even though i beg her to feed off the sun.
Anyways that's about it from me! Hope you enjoyed this lil introduction that is the size of the Twilight prologue, but way better.

2023.03.20 14:31 HooliGan1420 21 [M4F] Argentina/Anywhere - I bid thee a humble welcome into my very straightforward but amazingly long post.

Netlist, Inc. (OTCMKTS: NLST) Major Runner as Patent Player Set to Start Jury Trials in Texas on April 17 with Final Pretrial Conference Set for March 27

ByBoe RimesMarch 19, 2023 01028📷
Netlist, Inc. (OTCMKTS: NLST) continues to rocket northbound with power as we get closer to jury trial in Texas against Samsung starting in April. NLST has quickly emerged as the number one most traded stock on the otc bulletin boards with dollar volume topping $3.5 million on a slow day on Friday. Just 2 years ago NLST was the darling of small caps rocketing over $10 per share, now after dipping below $1 in December, NLST is once again red hot with huge buying and little selling the stock hit highs near $4 earlier this month. After some consolidation NLST Is once again moving northbound with power; a break over $4 and NLST really takes off. NLST does not dilute, and the stock has virtually the same share structure as it did in 2021.
This is a really exciting time for Netlist as the jury trial in Texas against Samsung starts on April 17 with a final pretrial conference set for March 27. The trial is expected to last about a week. Netlist CEO CK Hong recently said: “We’ve invested extensively over the years in the IP enforcement process and look forward to seeing the fruits of our labor and the validation of our intellectual property in the coming months. As the Company’s revenues continue to grow recently topping $161 million in 2022, Netlist continues to WIN in court. The upside is enormous as the aggregate of the multiple infringement lawsuits Netlist is pursuing against Samsung, Micron and Google both in the US and in Germany could very well yield significant settlements and we could see multiple resolutions in 2023. Much more on the upcoming court dates below. We will be updating on NLST when more details emerge so make sure you are subscribed to newsytrends.com by entering your email below.

Netlist, Inc.📷 (OTCMKTS: NLST)headquartered in Irvine, California, provides high-performance memory solutions to enterprise customers in diverse industries. The Company’s products in various capacities and form factors and its line of custom and specialty memory products bring leading performance to customers in a variety of industries globally and cloud service providers. Netlist licenses its portfolio of intellectual property, including solutions relating to volatile memory, storage memory, and hybrid memory. Netlist owns registered or unregistered trademark rights to NVvault®, HyperCloud®, HybriDIMM™, EXPRESSvault™, PreSight™, “memory at storage capacities, storage at memory speeds”™, and Netlist. As of December 31, 2022, Netlist had approximately 100 full-time and part-time employees globally.
📷The Company manufactures memory subsystem products at its facility in Suzhou, China which is certified in International Organization for Standardization (“ISO”) 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management Standards. Netlists’s in-house manufacturing function, combined with its engineering and design capabilities, allows it to assemble its memory subsystems quickly and in high volume. The Company’s manufacturing facility is capable of surface mount assembly, subsystem testing, system-level burn-in testing, programming, marking, labeling and packaging. Manufacturing cycle times for its memory subsystem products, from receipt of order, are typically one week or less and in some cases as short as two days.
Netlist holds a valuable intellectual property portfolio with at least 130 patents issued and pending U.S. and foreign patents, many seminal, in the areas of hybrid memory, storage class memory, rank multiplication and load reduction. The Company developed its portfolio of patents over many years of bringing disruptive new products to market. Netlist’s strategy is to leverage its unique board-level intellectual property with a thorough understanding of semiconductor building blocks and system-level applications to deliver performance, cost, and time-to-market advantages to OEMs. Netlist invented the NVDIMM almost a decade ago and since then, it has shipped over 500,000 units, more than every other supplier combined. Netlist holds over 27 issued and pending patents on the technology, many of which are seminal covering the fundamental architecture of NVDIMM.
Netlist is led by CEO C.K. Hong, who brings over two decades of high-tech management experience to the Company. He most recently served as President of Infinilink, a DSL equipment manufacturer, and as executive vice president of Viking Components, Inc. Prior to that, he spent 15 years with LG where he held various senior management positions in the U.S and Korea.
Netlist recently reported Q4 and full year 2022 financial results. Revenues in Q4, 2022 fell compared to Q4 2021 however for the full year the Company saw growth reporting revenues of $161.6 million in 2022, compared to revenues of $102.4 million for the full year ended January 1, 2022. Net loss for the full year ended December 31, 2022, was ($33.4) million, or ($0.14) per share, compared to a net income in the prior year period of $4.8 million, or $0.02 per share.
📷As Netlist product sales continue to grow, the other more exciting part of the Company’s business is its patent infringement lawsuits against Samsung, Micron, Google and others such as Monolithic Power Systems Inc. The financial prospects of Netlist patent infringement lawsuits are significant. Some of the biggest in history are Intel vs VLSI Technology (2021) – $2.18 Billion and Pfizer vs Teva Pharmaceuticals (TEVA) & Sun Pharma (2013) – $2.15B. In June 2020 in a landmark case for the Company, Netlist was victorious in a 12-year battle in the patent courts against Google. A 3-judge panel at the US court of appeals, in a unanimous rule 36 decision, upheld the decision of the lower court and found in favor of Netlist. Google “Waived” their appeal rights to SCOTUS and the 912 patent was reissued with 78 claims upheld.
Following that, Netlist won against SK Hynix in a deal that included a $40 million signing bonus, a $600 million dollar supply agreement at advantageous terms, a patent sharing agreement that gives netlist access to Hynix portfolio of 5000 patents free of charge, and now Hynix is Netlists partner. Also, Netlist won an important court decision in their favor in the Google case however as Samsung had supplied the patent-infringing memory modules to Google, the Judge decided things could wait while the court in the Netlist-Samsung case decided if Samsung had violated Netlist’s patent. More recently Samsung filed an amended complaint against Netlist which was dismissed and as the Company stated: “The partial dismissal means Samsung cannot pursue a separate action on the patents Netlist first asserted in Texas, and now cannot carry out its alleged obligation to protect Google from the ‘912 Patent in Delaware.”

During the conference call on February 21 Netlist CEO CK Hong talked extensively on the Company’s lawsuits stating:
📷“Netlist made significant progress in 2022 with its Global IP Enforcement campaign. Our continuing goal is to ensure our innovations are secured by high quality patents and that those patents are being fairly licensed by marketplace implementers…In Netlist’s action against Samsung in the Eastern District of Texas, there were a number of favorable developments in 2022 and now in 2023, we approach the culmination of this case in the form of a jury trial. As a reminder, this case addresses Samsung’s infringement of six Netlist patents covering LRDM, DDR5, and high bandwidth memory, or HBM. In December, the court issued a claim construction order, largely adopting Netlist’s position for many of the claim terms at issue, creating the basis for establishing Samsung’s infringement. More recently, Judge Gilstrap rejected Samsung’s second motion to stay the case and allowed Netlist’s request for additional deposition, testimony and fact discovery. This case has now proceeded into the conclusion of the expert discovery phase with a final pretrial conference set to start for March 27. The jury trial was moved up two weeks to accommodate the court’s schedule and is set to begin April 17. We expect the jury trial to last approximately one week. Judge Gilstrap is also presiding over Netlist’s case against Micron for infringement of the same six patents. Claim construction is scheduled for that case for July 2023. The jury trial is scheduled for January 2024. There’s a second set of cases against Samsung and Micron in the Eastern District of Texas. Judge Gilstrap consolidated these cases because each involves a 912 patent. The 912 patent and related child patents, claim constructions for that consolidated case is set for October, and a trial date for both is set for April 15, 2024. Mr. Hong noted that Netlist’s case against Google in the Northern District of California remains stayed pending the outcome of the second Eastern District Texas case against Samsung. The Netlist case against Micron in the Western District of Texas remains stayed pending the resolution of the four remaining IPRs Micron filed against Netlist patents, but will eventually proceed to a jury trial given the PTAB’s denial of institution on Micron’s IPR petition against the 608 patent. On October 2020 Netlist will have a claim construction hearing and the declaratory action that Samsung brought against it in Delaware. The jury trial for this case has been scheduled for 2025 and now includes Google as a party to the proceedings. The cases in Germany against Google, Samsung and Micron are also moving ahead as expected. Final one day oral hearings are set for upcoming May 3 for Micron, September 5 for Samsung and October 9 for Google, all in Dusseldorf….We view Samsung’s latest attempt to invalidate an important 912 claim on Google’s behalf as an abuse of the IPR process. In the past several months, I’ve written a couple of articles in the industry publications about our thoughts on the detrimental effects of IPR abuses on the patent system and the broader innovation economy. These are available on the company’s website. We’ve also visited with Congress in recent months in order to provide our input as they consider much needed legislative reforms on the current patent law. On January 5, 2023, USPTO Director, Kathi Vidal exercised her authority and brought Samsung’s 912 IPR proceedings under her review. Director Vidal cited the importance of the case to both the USPTO and the patent community, and deciding to take this under her personal review. She stayed the 912 IPR pending the outcome of her review, and on February 3, she entered a decision requiring the assigned PTAB board to reevaluate Netlist’s request for discovery on the admitted relationship between Samsung and Google. She also ordered that if the Board determines Google is a real party of interest under Samsung’s petition, the Board must vacate its institution decision and deny Samsung’s petition. We’re pleased that the Director Vidal elevated this request to her review and hope that the board will take a closer look at all the facts underpinning Samsung and Google’s relationship. In summary, we’ve invested extensively over the years in the IP enforcement process and look forward to seeing the fruits of our labor and the validation of our intellectual property in the coming months.”

Currently trading at a $800 million market valuation NLST os is 233,663,197 shares outstanding. Netlist has a strong balance sheet with $43 million in cash and restricted cash, $77 million in assets vs. $38 million in liabilities and the Company does not dilute the stock. Netlist has been reporting one record breaking quarter after another as the Company’s semiconductor business has more than doubled over the past year. The Company just reported record 2022-year end results with $161 million total revenues. With the jury trial starting in Texas on April 17 against Samsung NLST is rocketing northbound with a power the stock has not seen since 2021. 2023.03.20 13:59 jryad Countryside Sabbath Fellowship Chapter 1

Part I :: “The Little Church”
As I stepped inside Countryside Sabbath Fellowship, I never imagined how this place would change my outlook on faith, God, and Seventh-day Adventism as a whole. It didn’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary. It is your typical red church with a big white steeple rising high towards Heaven. A symbol of the enduring power of the love of Christ immortal. Or something like that. My eyes moved up towards the sign above the door that read The Church in the Wildwood. Perhaps it was a remnant of a previous church that had moved on? A small door led to a dining hall. Folding chairs and brown tables were set up around the room. My eyes darted left and right. Everyone here was old. Some were very old. I tapped my shoes on the rug. The gravel driveway still lingered on the bottom of each. Outside, cars loaded with the lost souls of the world rushed along Highway 395, a highway leading from Spokane to Canada.
A group of ragtag aging Adventist outcasts wandered almost aimlessly around the dining hall waiting for the morning service to start. We missed Sabbath school and in between there was a break where the members could unload their bladders and bowels, or grab a piece of church literature from a little table set up in the dining room. It was also a chance for the pack leader to chit-chat with those who came in late.
Here we all were, gathering to learn about “God’s truth for these last days.” It was funny how so few people were interested to learn about the end of the world. Yet, such knowledge, although freely given, is not popular with the masses. That’s what makes it even juicier. It seemed that the aged knew something that the younguns who were spending their Saturday involved in the sins of the world did not. Yet, I was new and did not know what a thrill all of this was. Hell, I had not even met Albert Fletcher, yet. When I stepped into Countryside Sabbath Fellowship, I felt like I had walked into some strange place removed from time. I had never been inside a church quite like this. There was something familiar and nostalgic about it. I took a deep breath, and could almost taste the old wood smell that the whole place seemed to be dipped in. I don’t know if it was pine or birch, but the place smelled like a cross between wood paneling and the bedroom at your great-grandmother’s house.
Deer Park, Washington is a town of four thousand souls. Given that this church had about twenty or so people attending, that meant that there were still 3980 that were lost and desperately in need of salvation. Yet, the situation was not as hopeless as the reader may think. There was another God-fearing Seventh-day Adventist church in this small town (praise the Lord!). That was the thing that really perplexed me from the start. I asked myself: “Why did a second Adventist church open only a couple miles from an SDA church that has been a part of this community for decades?” I had been married in the other church, and when I was baptized I was made well aware that the other Adventist church was also the remnant church written about in Revelation. So, why was I seeing double?
There’s really no way to sugarcoat things. I was not raised a Seventh-day Adventist. I joined shortly after being married (and I was married far too young). I really had no clue that not being an Adventist at the time could have barred me from marriage. I was incredibly impressionable. I wanted to impress my future wife and future in-laws. I knew that there was no chance for me to be wed to my lady if I did not join the church. The truth was, I really wanted to be baptized into a relationship with Christ for some time, so I jumped in, fins first so to speak. But, with that said, I always thought Adventism was kind of strange (and it never made sense to me that I had to agree to 28 fundamental rules in order to be baptized into Christ). I could say that I would have probably found any church strange. I am sure they all have their peculiarities. Yet, there were some things within Adventism that never really sat right with me. The big one was this idea that you have to separate yourself from the big bad world. Bear with me.
You see, in the Adventist ecosystem, it is suggested that kids go to separate schools, and universities, and then get jobs in the church. I suppose the latter one is optional, but the church is the place that Adventist parents pray their kids end up. I am sure that’s a noble thing. Being a pastor, doctor, or missionary is the gold standard. You get a kid who agrees to enter into the holy trinity of career paths and you are golden. Sit back, light a cigar, and celebrate the fact that they are on the fast track to Heaven.
Actually, let’s go back to the cigar thing. The Adventist church has a pretty strict health message. No smoking, no drinking, no drugs, no cheese. Wait, back up a minute. I get the no smoking, drinking, and drugs thing—but no cheese? Yeah, you heard me right. I said no cheese. There’s also no hot peppers, no vinegar, no meat, and no ice cream. Now, you may be thinking that’s absurd. It may or may not be. You see, the church is famous for its health message. Cheese is to be shunned and is “not fit for food.” And that was a shame for me because I am kind of in love with cheese. There’s more though. The idea of living far out in the country, away from the cities, and being separate from society is a high ideal. Why, you ask? Well, you had to prepare for the end times, an imminent National Sunday Law, and intense persecution. Some of these issues had me struggling, but I didn’t give them too much thought. I don’t know how many did. I know that it was mentioned during sermons, and some people were obsessive about it, but during day-to-day life, most people just did the same thing as those people who were out and about on that strange Saturday morning.
What Adventism did provide for me was a way to stay close to the Lord. Although I had much to learn, I was happy in my ignorance and felt that my relationship with God was slowly growing. For me, that ignorance was bliss. How little did I know that my ignorance was about to be shattered.
As I sat there in that dining hall, with the pastor’s eyes locked on me, I thought back to my recent return from Eastern European Country. I had been a missionary in Kyiv. My job was nothing spectacular. I was just an English teacher. I loved Eastern European Country but decided to come back to the United States with my wife to live a more pastoral life. The idea was that we would consider buying property and living a more pastoral life in accordance with Ellen White’s* prophetic insight. After close to fifteen years married, we had just had a child and that child was now two years old. Seeing that the world was slated for the great and terrible day of the Lord, we thought best to begin a new phase of life and consider building ourselves a country home.
*Note: Ellen White was hit by a rock when she was a young woman. This was a very traumatic part of her life and it affected her. Like many who call themselves modern-day prophets, a traumatic event is often a springboard to purported visions and dreams. Young Ellen claimed to have visions in her weakened state and eventually a movement formed. Her power and authority grew. She wrote prolifically (with help from others) and a host of source material (and I’m not talking angels). Much of what she says is controversial, yet a lot of that is not shared in church. Many offshoots and extremists have formed that take her words as true messages from God and elevate her to a position of spiritual authority. Many of these cults are full of spiritual and sexual abuse, and many still arise in the United States and Europe, as well as developing countries around the world. Countryside is an example of such a church.
It was a happy accident that I became a missionary. Before diving head first into the Lord’s work, I had finished law school in New York City. Before that I was in San Francisco, working at In-N-Out Burger and attending college at the University of San Francisco—a Jesuit school. Not the kind of places you would expect a baptized Adventist to spend his time. Yet, I was not your everyday Adventist. As I said, I was a first-generation Adventist, and at the time I had no idea that multi-generational Adventists looked at us like we were retarded. Now I know why.
But I didn’t then.
Now the pastor was on a quick march toward me. He wore a sharp-looking grey suit. His skin had an olive complexion to it. We met at the pamphlets on a table all proclaiming the benefits of a vegan diet and how country living could help you escape end times persecution.
“Hi. I’m pastor Albert*,” he said, smiling. His smile showcased two full rows of teeth—something that not all the members of this church could claim ownership to. I shook his hand, stating that I was glad to finally meet him. I had heard a lot about this man as of late, and my in-laws were quite giddy that we were going to meet him on this holy day.
*NOTE: Albert Fletcher is the pastor at Countryside Sabbath Fellowship. Since he is a limited public figure with a vocal public church and YouTube channel, I have used his name in this book.
I was still in awe. I had traveled to around 30 countries at this point in my life, yet nothing was quite like this place. I had stood in some of the world’s greatest Buddhist temples, The huge mosques in Cairo and Istanbul, and the legendary temples of India and Thailand, and yet there was nowhere quite like this. I had read a lot about Adventism as it existed back in the early days, and this place reminded me a bit of how that must have looked. Observing this church, I realized that it seemed like something out of “pure” Adventism. Something like one would see back at the very beginning when the rock had just struck Ellen White, and the prophecies were flowing like sweet milk and honey.
My wife’s parents had been singing the praises of his church for the better part of a year now. Yet, I just did not understand it. I thought back to the days when they were active in the Deer Park church. The father-in-law in particular was quite involved there. He would work with the Sabbath school classes, and play the piano during service. Both he and his wife had forged many friendships during the decades. It was the church their children were baptized in and their grandchildren were dedicated to the Lord in. Why did they leave for this new church? What changed? And why didn’t Albert and all these old guys just go there for Sabbath worship? There was plenty of room in the pews. The potluck tables still had room for them. They could make themselves useful in aspects of church outreach. Something seemed strange about it.
As Albert stood there, shaking my hand, I could not deny that he seemed charismatic and kind. There was a level of energy to him that radiated. His big smile was welcoming and warm. As our hands parted, his wife rushed over. We are going to call her Kathleen, and like everyone else in this story, her name has been changed. Kathleen had wispy white hair and a frail physique. Her voice was also warm. Motherly even. “It’s great to meet you.” She spoke slower than her husband but was still bubbly. Her smile matched her husband’s. “We’ve heard a lot about you both,” she said.
“We hope it’s good,” I said, laughing a little. I had been married to my wife for 15 years at this point. When it came to my in-laws, I just “went with the flow.” Freddy, my wife’s father, is known to be an easily riled and opinionated man who finds being right to be the pinnacle of importance. To say we have clashed over the years has been an understatement. He never really took to me, but the truth is, he clashed with all of his sons and every man who dated one of his five daughters. My wife happened to be the youngest. My life choices never really seemed to please him, and to say we were opposites also is an understatement. He loved the country, working on mechanics, hated change of any kind, and was—and I’m just being honest here—easily given to conspiracy theories. I, on the other hand, loved the city and traveling. I thrived under constant change and had no desire to bother with mechanics. Moreover, I hated conspiracy theories and didn’t even like to talk about them. His wife was a much quieter woman, although not the silent type. She took a back seat to him in most matters, likely wondering what it was that would set him off next. As his top would blow (and it often did), the little wife would tell him to “knock it off.” Those words were music to my ears, as nothing and nobody else could shut him up quite as she could. For all of our sanity, we needed her when he was about to go all Krakatoa.
“We are glad to have you here,” Albert said.
I looked back to when I started out in Eastern European Country and how we had been missionaries. I hoped that Albert liked that (at the time it was important for me to impress others). Who doesn’t like a good missionary? Yet, I felt like a failure in Eastern European Country. Nobody was baptized because of me. I didn’t feel fruitful at all. And I felt that Adventism in Eastern European Country was a bit conservative. One of our friends was pulled aside for wearing pants and told it was not right for a woman to wear pants to church. Wearing pants is a big deal in Adventism, and a lot of legendary fights have been started over pants. Just today I read an account of how one woman was called a slut for wearing dress pants to church.
As I breathed in the scent of aged wood, I thought back to the phone call I overheard in our Kyiv flat. My wife and her mother spoke about a new neighbor that had moved “all the way from Southern California” to eastern Washington. “He’s going to start his own church!” Even as a missionary, I didn’t think people really did that anymore.
“He’s an Adventist!” Darla bellowed. Darla is the name we are going to call the mother-in-law.
“I’m so glad he’s not another crazy neighbor,” she said.
Over the years, many “crazy neighbors” had moved into the area. A couple of child molesters were in the ranks, as was a guy who was borderline insane (in the clinical way). It was not uncommon to hear gunshots being fired “just because.” I don’t mean hunting or target practice, either. There were plenty of stories about people who were attracted to cheap land and who didn’t always take their pills. And that was the land we were thinking of moving to. Sheesh.
“His own church? Why?” I asked her after she hung up.
My wife didn’t really know what to say. It seemed strange to her, too. Yet not completely unfamiliar. This thing had happened before, but with someone else. They called it a “Historic Seventh-day Adventist church.” This church preached the evils of the organized modern Seventh-day Adventist church (I’m tired of typing Seventh-day Adventist and I am now going to type SDA instead for the remainder of this book). This church also preached the evils of the Jesuits (which we will get to soon), and the merits of a certain prophetess known as Ellen Gould White. With the end of the world fast approaching (even back then), it was time to “get ready get ready get ready!” They were armed to the teeth with strategies for country living, healthful eating, and books on “present truth” written by a man named Bill Hughes. Yet, not even all those armaments would help this church when it eventually fell apart.
“Your brother Stephen is such a helpful person to have here,” Kathleen said, looking over at him. He stoically stood with his bible under his arm and stared out towards the sanctuary. It was as if he was counting down every slow second before church would start, like a soldier standing at attention.
Is that so? I thought. He has never seemed very religious to me. Now, here he was, dressed sharper than I had seen him dressed, at least in a long time. I had even seen him smile! Another church member approached him and they began to speak. He took a small stack of DVDs out of his pocket and handed one to the man. He then walked over to the literature table and set the rest there.
“I’m glad to hear that,” my wife said. “it’s been VERY good for him,” Darla said, beaming with a kind of pride that says, “I think my child is going to make it into Heaven after all.”
At that point, people start to spill into the sanctuary like lemonade from a cracked cup on a hot summer day. We followed them and took a seat near the back. As we stepped through the doors leading to the holy room, I closed my eyes for a moment and let the moment wash over me. To the Countryside congregation, this room was like the Kabaa in Islam. It was a holy room where God was present every Saturday morning at 10:45. You did not run in the sanctuary. You did not spit in the sanctuary. You did not speak loudly in the sanctuary. You did not bring your donkey into the sanctuary. You did not jump up and down in the sanctuary. You did not eat cheddar or Swiss cheese in the sanctuary. This room was a large room with wood panel walls, long old pews, and sturdy authorized King James Bibles. That’s right, they were authorized! By who? King James maybe? I don’t know. The room had that thick pine scent that tickled you like grandpa’s smoking room (without the smoke). Behind you could see the mother’s room through a glass partition. On the walls were shelves of toys that would make Geoffrey the giraffe blush. Old blocks, games, cars, and all sorts of little doo-dads for the kids to play with before they were old enough to take in one of Al’s sermons were neatly lined up from the floor to ceiling. Beyond, another door leads to the foyer. Soft, diffused light shined through obscured windows. This place was truly different than the more modern SDA (I told you I’m not typing that long word anymore), churches, and even different than that Deer Park church in town.
“We only use the King James Bible here,” Albert proudly proclaimed.
“The other bibles have been corrupted by the Catholic Church,” Stephen informed me as he slipped a pamphlet my way. “Read it.”
I looked it over. I had time to spare before everyone got all comfy and the song service started. Information was methodically presented that showed in detail how certain words had been strategically omitted from the New King James and NIV Bibles. Strange and ominous imagery graced the pages of the pamphlets. These pictures were of the kind that could give a child nightmares (or lifelong PTSD).
“I’m going to read this later,” I said, sliding it into my own Bible. Thank God it happened to be a King James Bible. Otherwise, I would probably have had some explaining to do.
Then, all of the sudden, without warning, like a bomb going off, we all shot up to our feet. A younger old man was wrestling with the piano like he was possessed by some kind of demon. Up front, Albert stood erect, with his wife next to him, before the entire congregation started bellowing, in unison:
WE HAVE THIS HOPE THAT BURNS WITHIN OUR HEARTS
HOPE IN THE COMING OF THE LORD
WE HAVE THIS FAITH THAT CHRIST ALONE IMPARTS,
FAITH IN THE PROMISE OF HIS WORD
At that point, as the sanctuary was literally shaking, the tone changed. The voices got deeper. The more serious part commenced:
WE BELIEVE THE TIME IS HERE
WHEN THE NATIONS FAR AND NEAR
SHALL AWAKE, AND SHOUT, AND SING
HALLELUJAH! CHRIST IS KING!
WE HAVE THIS HOPE THAT BURNS WITHIN OUR HEARTS,
HOPE IN THE COMING OF THE LORD.

A little about me and my interests so you can see if we’d get along:
That should give you a little to work with! Happy to share pictures of myself privately too, but to give you an idea: I’m 5’8, long-ish dark messy hair, dark brown eyes, baby face, in decent shape but not ripped.

2023.03.20 13:58 alf_Lafleur A piano played on a sequences sounds flat and uninteresting to me, while ensembles sound a lot better

Hello, I have been mainly writing music for piano only, mostly soundtracks, and to me, the most tedious part of the process is actually learning to play my own music and recording it without any major mistake, so I often record that in separate well-executed sections and merge together into one piece.
I often want to write music which goes somehow beyond my own playing skills, so it's hard for me to play. I would say 80% of the time I dedicate into making my own music goes into recording, and 20% into composing which, unfortunately, is the fun part.
Ideally, I would like to entirely leave the performance to a sequencer, but they're pretty bad at performing piano music, which generally sounds dull. In fact, dynamics are absent and need to be manually re-inserted, as well as sustain pedal. Plus, slowing or accelerating time to provide some feeling to the performance, does not seem to work well on a sequencer, and often sounds fake and requires a lot of work as well. This is quite painful with Logic X, but I remember it wasn't great either when I was using Finale, despite the additional dedicated notation.
But, for some reason, whenever I listen to some orchestral music produced by a sequencer, it does not sound as bad, as if the stiffness of the single instruments is sort of averaged out. Do you agree with that?
If so, what do you think is the reason?
And do you have any kind of process for making a sequencer to produce a good performance for piano? Thanks.

2023.03.20 13:31 KindDifficulty6323 AITA for telling my friend I don't care about their relationship?

I (16F) have a good friend (14,non-binary), whom we will call Adam, with who I am talking for the last two months. They are a really nice person and we are pretty close to each other, talking about various things like music, shows, nature, etc.. In the last two weeks though, this certain person has been telling me about there new boyfriend, who we will call Tom. (I must mention I have nothing against there queer relationship as I am a lesbian myself and I am currently dating someone too) The issue comes to the point that me and Adam used to be really close and now they are slowly drifting away from me, which I don't mind, but when we talk to each other, all we talk about without my friend to get bored is, of course, Tom, and how amazing and fierce he is. I had been trying to change the subject to something else but my friend doesn't allow me to and always brings the subject back to there boyfriend and how cool he is, which makes me a little mad, because when I want to tell them about my little hangouts with my girlfriend, they just throw it over there shoulder and make a reference for there boyfriend, and back again to talking about Tom we are. As a friend, I know I should be supporting about there relationships, and I really am, I appreciate both of them, they are nice people, but I kind of need to take a break from always chattering with Adam only about his boyfriend..
I probably am the asshole right now, to be honest

Picks Of The Week (by u/lefuniname)

1. Polyrom - Rumbling Bass / Techno Syndrome 💎 [Drum & Bass Arena]

Recommended if you like: Waeys, Particle, Trex
Every now and then, a completely new name comes along, with a sound that's so clean and precise that you can't help but immediately fall in love. Every single time I actually start researching these new names more deeply, however, I realise there's a reason for this insane quality: they have been around under a different name before! Some have a separate alias with a different subgenre sound running concurrently, some are also doing a lot of non-DnB stuff, and some simply wanted a brand new start after a lot of time in the scene. Polyrom seems to be falling into the latter category.
Russian producer Pavel Zhigarev, sometimes also called Paul Andrew, has been in the biz for quite some time now. While he began his musical journey playing guitar in rock bands, he and his brother also played around with a whole lot of Pop and Electronic music records during their formative years, mashing up their favourites from each side of the spectrum until they had accumulated enough of them to compile their very first "Geneticmix". So when Pavel then wanted to start releasing his own music, a couple years after first getting into DnB back in 2006 (!), he thought back fondly to these humble beginning and decided to call his artist alias Genetic Bros! With a mysterious masked stage presence, he was tearing up quite a few dancefloors soon after the launch of the project, but what really kicked things off was none other than Futurebound signing him to dancefloor behemoth Viper Recordings. During the early 2010s, he went from appearing on Viper's Summer Slammers compilation to releasing on Formation and Hospital Records, followed by a whole solo EP on Viper.
This lead to all kinds of successes, like multiple uploads to UKF and airplay on BBC 1xtra’s Crissy Criss show, but that still wasn't even all he did during these few years. Together with Steve KG, he had a little side project called Kinetics, whose music even landed on UKF's Bass Culture compilation, but an arguably even bigger thing was his label, Artist Recordings, later also known as Artist Music UK. Considering how common it is for new labels nowadays to at least start out with this kind of concept, Artist Recordings' approach of releasing all of their music for free was actually quite ahead of the times. In their sadly way too short time as a label, they managed to put out some of the earliest releases from then-newcomers Maduk, Grafix and Rameses B!
Starting in 2013/2014 and basically only ending in 2020, it started to become a little quieter around Pavel though. He was still working on music and media in general all this time, just in less public-facing ways. Not only was he the senior composer and sound producer for Pesni, the biggest Russian music talent show on air (and not a misspelling of something else, get your mind out of the gutter!), in 2018 he even founded his very own "Music & SFX Laboratory" called NOIZLAB! Chances are that you have actually seen his artwork and animation in action, with clients like NHL, Porsche, Audi, Tommy Hilfer, Samsung and HTC only scratching the surface of who he worked with since.
While this is obviously all working out amazingly for him, he never quite lost that urge to produce drum and bass, which is why he eventually returned to the scene in 2020 as Polyrom, with the extremely fonky, incredibly fresh banger Movement on RAM Records' annual compilation. For two and a half years since then, there was not much more to say about the project yet, but luckily, that changed today! After connecting and getting along well with UKF's Sampo and Drum & Bass Arena's A&R person in the backstage area at a show in London, he decided to send over some bangers of his and, as you can probably guess yourself, they signed two of them right away. Now finally released on said arena for the gladiators of the drums and the basses, which I don't think I even have to introduce here, Polyrom returns with Rumbling Bass / Techno Syndrome!
As you'd expect from such a straight-forward title, Rumbling Bass opens with a colourful assortment of (poly-)rumbling, well, basses, minimalistic drums and all sorts of atmospheric little sounds, all leading up to the iconic rumbling bass vocal sample. Once the voice announces what we're listening to, everything falls into place. The groovy bass is cranked up to such phat levels that I'm afraid my downstairs neighbours' silverware is going to fall off the table, the drums are pushed to maximum funkiness and will get every head to bopping status in no time, each of the heavily reverberated atmospheric sounds and synth stabs are expertly woven into the bass' ever-looping melody, creating a whole symphony of excellent deep and darkness. If you just look at each of the sounds making up the tune on their own, you'd see that while super cleanly produced, a lot of them mostly don't change much throughout the track, but, first of all, there's so many of them that you lose track of each individual piece, and, second of all, they are all arranged in such a tightly structured and musically satisfying way that they become more than the sum of its parts. Just a great tune all-around!
Our opener still had a tiny bit of that Movement-fonk to it, and followup Techno Syndrome's intro might have you believe there's some Disco vibes incoming, but soon enough, it makes it very clear that there's a new sheriff in town and his name is Filth, first name Absolute. With a da-da-da-dada-damn catchy chopped up vocal sample keeping us company, we are launched into the world of incredibly filthy deep and darkness, where the sub-heavy wobbly basses fly way under the radar, freely (poly-)roaming all over the place. While our vocal sample proves to be a worthy companion at first, it slowly but surely retreats back to safety, until eventually, the basses don't hold back one bit anymore and menacingly growl you into submission.
While a bit unexpected after his first Polyrom single, this new double-tracker of his is so well produced, so tightly executed, has such satisfying progressions and is just so damn all-around filthy that I don't even care that it's a different style. As far as I'm concerned, as long as the quality stays like this, Pavel can do whatever the hell he wants, I'm gonna be there to listen.
Other deep and dark stuff from this week: - Brain - Altered Zone EP [T3K] (100% of the proceeds are donated to charity!) - Arkale Dre - Take The Fall EP - Nami - 4 Minutes EP - Sudley - Rapidash EP - Revan - Night Beats / About Time

2. Binary - Lost [All172Things]

Recommended if you like: Notequal, Synergy, SLWDWN
It will never cease to amaze me just how deep the well of Dutch talent really goes. Even after almost three years of doing this, with me trying (and often failing, but that's beside the point!) my best to keep my artist selection as diverse as possible, it feels like there are still whole subsections of Dutch DnB artistry that I haven't covered yet. So let's try to chip away at it a bit again, by talking about dynamic duo Binary!
Based in Nijmegen, Anwet Verdonk and Kasper Ponjee were not necessarily involved in the usual big scenes of Amsterdam or Rotterdam you might be thinking of when imagining the Dutch scene. To still be able to quench their thirst for DJing, Anwer decided to create the SoundBwoyMurdahSystem collective, with which he, as Mission Control, Kasper, as Kappie, and a couple more like-minded mates turned all sorts of local and online places upside-down. While Kasper started out with the slower tempos of Dubstep before eventually transitioning over to the holy lands of DnB, Anwer seemed to have been a zealot of the Neuro fastness since the very beginning, even putting out a couple of solo tunes.
Around 2016/2017, Anwer and Kasper decided to expand their musical relationship even further, now adding DnB production to the list. Since Mission Control & Kappie is a bit of a clunky name for this project, they instead got inspired by the duality of their collaborative kinship and rebranded as Binary! Starting out in 2017 with a mostly straight-forward Neuro sound, they quickly found homes for their tunes on underground platforms like RustOut, ION Music and Raving Panda, but soon enough, they became regulars on Bytecode's Kill Tomorrow and you started hearing their sonics on Korsakov, Red Light Records, Axon Records and, of course, 0101 Music. Not to mention them becoming label managers at WTF! Throughout this wild journey through the labels, however, their sound tactically shifted from "normal" neuro to the more atypical newschool techy kind, becoming more and more precise and just straight-up piercing. In other words, their sound became something that a certain meme cat would feature on his SoundCloud.
Real ones know who I'm talking about of course, but let's tell the whole story: A couple of years ago, Northern-Spanish DnB superfan and occasional DJ Axel Hadzi, aka Koshmaar, began uploading clips of his favourite techy and forward-thinking dubs on his SoundCloud page, All172Things. It wasn't just a dump of random ID clips though, it was a carefully organised catalogue of upcoming music by some of the scene's most interesting artists around, no matter how underground they might be. Not only did he help build the hype for some of these artists, he also eventually started compiling released works of his favourite newschool artists into his New Wave Project playlists, laying the first building block for a community born out of his sheer endless passion. Over time, the account became more and more popular, and around 2021 he decided to use his platform for even more good.
First, he introduced the All172Things mix series, where the likes of Niallo, Moytra, Ewan Bristow, Karraki, In The Lab and many more would end up showcasing their latest dubs. Next, with the help of man like Gaijin Graphics, he gave the channel a whole new look in 2022, just in time for the unveiling of another project of his: premieres! That's right, since a bit more than a year the channel has been uploading a ton of upcoming tunes from all sorts of sick labels, with the total count having already crossed the 220+ mark (!!) at the time of writing. Even that wasn't quite enough for him though, and so he set out to add yet another pillar to his DnB empire: A label! Even though this particular part of the project has only been around since the beginning of the year, with releases by Sign, Nebulate and now also Binary, the label has already been featured on VISION Radio and at this rate might actually become a worthy Best Newcomer Label award contender!
So, what did the Dutch duo bring to Lost, their All10101100Things debut? Plenty of heat, of course! After showing off their masterful ability to create uniquely haunting atmospheres in the intro, which also doubles as a great tease for what's to come later, they fire off this insane barrage of fine-tuned rapid-fire synths, accentuated with heavy-hitting newschool snares and straight-up menacing bass responses. Throughout this first drop, we're already getting plenty of fun little variations, from a redistribution of the call and response frequencies to a little 4x4 expedition, and the second half is no different, with an extended, even more pounding 4x4 section, for all you fast techno lovers out there.
Binary have always been putting out one great tune after the other, but this new one might be favourite yet. They struck the perfect balance between clean and incredibly hard-hitting, beautiful and menacing, and a couple other very positive adjectives.
Other techy things from this week: - Zombie Cats - FADE OUT - Sorza - Ego Dissolution (Trinist Remix) - Notequal - Reversal Upsurge - Holotrope - Falling - Niallo - Floating Away
