Kelly Nicole Smith: A Homicide that Remains Unsolved
**This is my first post so please be kind and share any tips, ideas, & theories below! This story is in my hometown, by the way, which is why I decided to try and raise awareness to it.
Kelly Nicole Smith was born April 24, 1980, to John J. and Karen Godfrey of Natrona Heights, Pennsylvania, a small town 24 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. She graduated from Highlands High School in 1998 and was an administrative assistant at Glenshaw Glass.
She had a daughter, Katlyn, and a son, Jason. She was married to Jason W. Smith for approximately six years at the time of her death according to her obituary, yet her husband says it had been 10 years.
On June 14, 2007, Kelly’s body was located by a pair of fishermen in the Chartiers Run section of Allegheny River in Lower Burrell, a town less than two miles from Natrona Heights. She was found by a riverside spot known to attract local teenagers to party.

Despite being married, she was not living with her husband at the time of her death. According to him, they had been married 10 years and “split up a couple of weeks. She talked with me everyday, and I know we were getting back together.” They had split after a recent miscarriage Kelly had suffered, according to her mother.
Her son, Mason, was four years old at the time she died. She was residing with a man called Chad Stroup, who she had known in high school. They had recently reunited. He had allegedly moved from Indiana to be with her.
Kelly had gotten into an argument with him the night before she vanished. He was described by his own mother, Maria, and Kelly’s mother, Karen, as her boyfriend at the time.
The day before she was reported missing, Kelly had told her mother that Mason was sick and unable to attend daycare. Her mother offered to watch him, but Kelly declined.
The last time she was heard from was around 2a.m., by her husband. He received a call around that time from Kelly, and she asked, “What are you doing?” He responded with, “I’m sleeping,” and he could hear her crying as the phone was seemingly smacked out of her hand. And that was the last time he heard from her.
Whenever she failed to show up to drop off their son the following morning, Jason began to call her repeatedly, as did her mother. Karen Godfrey was the one to finally get ahold of Stroup, who said that they had gotten into an argument and that Kelly had “stormed off.”
Yet, according to her husband, she would never abandon Mason like that. Karen began to call, text, and get into contact with all of her friends. None of them had seen her.
Finally, several hours later, detectives were at their doorstep, interviewing family members and those who resided nearby. She lived across the river from where she was found, floating just below the Braeburn Lock and Dam.

Police questioned the boyfriend, her husband, and others, including a male friend who had allegedly taken a liking to Kelly in recent times.
In an 2008 article, police stated they wanted to talk with as many of 5 people who were parked near the Braeburn side of Lock and Dam No.4 on the night of June 13, 2007. They arrived before dark in a light colored pickup truck and a dark car. They pulled firewood down to the rocks and investigators believe they may have seen Smith.
Her funeral was held on Father’s Day. Stroup, insisted he would talk to police after the funeral, and instead left the state. He fled to Texas. His mother reported him missing on June 19.
Police chased him there, essentially, and did manage to speak with him, but nothing was ever released about the conversation or the details they uncovered. He was never officially named a suspect in the case.
Karen, Kelly’s mother, has been outspoken about how she believes investigators have done little in recent years to push this case forward, and has spoken out about how they could have ruined potential evidence at the scene of the crime, as well. Investigators initially believed her daughter had drowned, which Kelly believes may have led to a loss of important evidence, but adamantly states that she does not fault investigators and first responders in that regard.
Her father says that detectives prefers they do not talk to the media, and share little to no details about the investigation with anyone— including the family. One thing that has been kept under wraps is the cause of Kelly’s death.
The reward for answers to Kelly’s case remains at 20,000 as of June 2021.

The video above shows the 68 year old bus monitor named Karen Klein being verbally abused by a group of condom worthy middle schoolers from Athena Middle School in Greece, New York.
Through the video you can hear them verbally berating the woman, calling her a bitch, fatass, poor, ugly, and various other words of the like. At one point in the video, you can hear one of the kids yell, “You’re so fuckin poor you fat ass,” in which Karen responds, “I try to live by some of these words, I try and it’s really hard,” which were the words written on her purse. Now, i don't know about you but that was fucking heart breaking. I have no idea why these horrible teens would want to bully a SENIOR CITIZEN to fucking tears, but i feel we need to do something, something that will bring some joy to her life.
She doesn't earn nearly enough ($15,506) to deal with some of the trash she is surrounded by. Lets give her something she will never forget, a vacation of a lifetime!

This is the video (Trigger warning: bullying) for anyone curious, if you remember. It was viral in 2012 and as a result, the whole Internet showed support and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to her.

My attempt to find her was fruitless. Ms. Klein is still alive as far as I know. This obituary is NOT the bus monitor from New York. Her Twitter has remained inactive for over a decade, and her blog has not been updated since 2013. This FB account is also inactive, and appeared to be run by someone else.
The only update on the bullies is that in 2015, two of them forced a special needs kid to drink urine from a toilet. Ms. Klein reacted negatively to that incident. Since then, they have not come forward to apologize (or just reveal who they are), nor has anyone leaked their names. (4chan leaked their names in 2012, but they have now faded back into obscurity.)
Marked as Concluded since Karen got her money, and no info is available on if she took a vacation or just retired.
