Who do you trust around Plano or the DFW metro for major work on old 4Runners?
Short version: As the title says, I'm looking for a mechanic to do major work on my 93 4Runner. It needs an engine overhaul, a de-gunking of the fuel system, a few suspension parts, a good cleaning, and possibly major electrical work.
Long version: I moved to Allen, TX (near Dallas) in January this year, leaving behind my 1993 4Runner, which was supposed to be having major work done by a mechanic in Moreno Valley, CA.
For 18 months, the mechanic had given me regular updates as he replaced my brake lines, rebuilt the engine, repaired the suspension, and replaced the wiring harness, which had been melted by a careless tow truck driver when jumping the vehicle. The mechanic told me in detail about how hard it was to source quality parts, and how this or that NOS component shipped from Wichita was actually out of spec and had to be re-ordered. It took him months to fix a few tiny but stubborn leaks.
This week I found out that it was all a lie, he never completed any work, and I'm out thousands of dollars until I drag him to court. I flew back to California, documented the condition of the vehicle, served the mechanic a demand letter, and towed my truck off the property. I'm shipping it to my house in Texas and searching for a mechanic near Plano/DFW who I can trust to do the job right.
Tl;dr California mechanic kept my truck for 18 months and performed zero repairs. During that time I moved to DFW area and now that I have the truck back I need to find a new mechanic. Do you trust anyone in the area?

This morning the Supreme Court handed down a decision in Allen v. Milligan, a case that challenged the Alabama legislature’s redistricting of the state after the 2020 census on the grounds that the new districts had been configured to pack the state’s growing numbers of Black voters into a single district and thus dilute their vote. Such discrimination based on race, plaintiffs charged, violated the 1965 Voting Rights Act (VRA).
District courts agreed with the plaintiffs and told the state it couldn’t use the new map, but in February 2022 the Supreme Court issued a stay of the injunction prohibiting that map. The Supreme Court ruling left the Alabama map intact for the 2022 election. Legal scholar Stephen Vladeck noted that the decision was part of the court’s recent use of the “shadow docket,” unsigned, unexplained orders issued without a hearing.
Today’s 5–4 decision upheld the verdicts of the lower courts, agreeing that the new Alabama map was, after all, illegal, because it violates Section 2 of the VRA, which prohibits the denial of the right to vote on account of race. This leaves intact the ability of plaintiffs to sue when states appear to discriminate against minority voters. Similar lawsuits are pending in ten different states.
But, as Vladeck notes, the Supreme Court’s February 2022 decision leaving the discriminatory map in Alabama, as well as similar maps in other states, in place for the November election, is likely responsible for the Republicans’ current majority in the House of Representatives. The Cook Political Report, which follows elections, immediately changed their ratings for the leanings of five House districts after news of the Supreme Court decision.
That House majority is currently at an impasse that makes it impossible to conduct business. The extremist House Freedom Caucus (HFC) has revolted against House speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) because of the budget deal he cut with President Biden before he would agree to raise the debt ceiling. Members of the HFC are demanding deeper cuts than McCarthy agreed to. The revolt of the far right puts into danger crucial spending bills, raising fears of a government shutdown in the fall.
To placate the extremists, McCarthy has apparently agreed to take up two bills: one to kill a Biden-backed gun regulation and another to push even more strongly against abortion rights. This move, which flies in the face of popular opinion, has angered Republicans in battleground districts, who are revolting against measures that will hurt them at home. It also runs the risk of alienating Democrats McCarthy will need to pass spending measures if the far right refuses to vote for them.
The extremism of today’s Republican Party grew in large part from the work of televangelist Pat Robertson, who died today at age 93. The son of a segregationist southern Democratic senator, Baptist minister Robertson urged evangelical Christians to vote and made them a core constituency of the Republican Party. Paving the way for those today calling for an end to liberal democracy, Robertson blamed LGBTQ Americans and women for secularizing the United States, which he saw as a tragedy and frequently blamed for natural disasters.
That political ideology depended on creating a false picture of what was really going on in the country. The Republican Party has become so wedded to lying about reality that today we saw Florida governor and Republican candidate for president Ron DeSantis circulating fake images of rival candidate Donald Trump embracing right-wing nemesis Dr. Anthony Fauci as a way to discredit Trump.
Trump’s team cried foul at the fake images, but the former president himself relies on manipulating reality to garner political support. CNN national correspondent Kristen Holmes reported today that Trump’s people reached out this week to congressional allies to encourage them to flood the airwaves with a defense of Trump and attacks on special counsel Jack Smith before a possible indictment of the former president.
To that end, Trump’s supporters spent the week trying to gin up outrage over a document they claimed shows that President Biden had taken a bribe as vice president. The document in question appears to be an unverified report that came to the Department of Justice through Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, one that the Trump Department of Justice dropped after it determined that the allegation was not supported by facts. But the practice of influencing politics through sham investigations is one of the Republicans’ key tools, and Trump allies have flooded social media this week insisting that this document is a smoking gun.
They were, of course, trying to set up a defense for the former president’s possible indictment on charges related to his refusal to hand over national security documents he had taken when he left the White House.
This evening, news broke that Trump has, indeed, been indicted by a grand jury in South Florida in connection with the documents discovered at Mar-a-Lago. The indictment is sealed, but there are reports that it includes seven counts of lawbreaking, including at least one related to the Espionage Act. These charges are serious indeed.
Trump is now the first former U.S. president in history to face federal criminal charges (his first indictment, on March 30, was at the state level). As The Guardian’s David Smith puts it, “he really might be going to jail.” Smith—who is a keen observer of American politics—notes that it is hard to figure out what is important and what is not in the general drama around the former president, but this indictment is “genuinely monumental.”
According to Trump’s outraged posts on social media, he has been summoned to appear at the Federal Courthouse in Miami next Tuesday.
Trump’s team asked his allies to jump to his defense, and they did. Trump loyalists implied that the “sham indictment” was destined to distract from the blockbuster story they had invented about Biden. House speaker McCarthy implied that Biden, who has had nothing to do with the Department of Justice investigation, special counsel in charge of the investigation Jack Smith, or the grand jury deliberations, was responsible for launching a political attack on a rival. The third Republican in House leadership, New York representative Elise Stefanik, also defended Trump…in a fundraising email that assured donors their money would go to the “OFFICIAL TRUMP DEFENSE FUND” though, in fact, most of it would be diverted to Stefanik’s operations. Trump, too, lost no time in fundraising off the indictment.
Significantly, though, all Republicans who do not identify with the far right have remained steadfastly silent in the face of the day’s news. The exception has been long-shot presidential candidate Asa Hutchinson, who has called for Trump to end his campaign.
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, who communicates with the Trump camp, says he holed up tonight not with his legal team but with political advisors. CBS News correspondent Robert Costa reports tonight that the camps of Republican rivals think that this news will actually help Trump in the short term, as his base rallies to him, but that the news of what is at stake in the theft of national security documents might well lose him support over time. If another indictment comes from Georgia concerning his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election there, rival camps say he might “bleed out.”

Redeem Court

Two…good(???) Supreme Court decisions??? From the once and future John Roberts Cauldron of Horrors???

SCOTUS shocked, uh, most of us, on Thursday when it issued a ruling preserving the (deeply disfigured) status quo in the Court’s interpretation of the Voting Rights Act. In a 5-4 ruling, the court decided in Allen vs. Milligan that the Alabama state legislature illegally “packed” the state’s Black voters into a single congressional district, even though Black residents make up more than one-quarter of the state’s population.
The decision was written by Chief Justice John Roberts, who was joined by fellow conservative Justice Brett Kavanuagh and the court’s three liberal justices. The majority agreed with a lower court’s decision to throw out the racially-gerrymandered map, and dismissed the state of Alabama’s argument that the Voting Rights Act requires legislatures to “prioritize race” over traditional redistricting techniques. It’s a good rule of thumb that whenever Republicans or nefarious special-interest groups accuse a racial minority of having an “unfair advantage,” they’re trying to get away with discrimination.
The decision was immediately celebrated by civil-rights organizations, and is a crucial win for voting rights, especially against the backdrop of years of corrosion. This decision could have major implications for other states across the Deep South, and in its immediate aftermath the Cook Political Report changed several of its 2024 House district ratings in Alabama and Louisiana from “Solid Republican” to “Toss Up” and one district in North Carolina from “Toss up” to “Lean Democratic.” Of course, the flipside of that analysis suggests the GOP-controlled Supreme Court preserved enough racial gerrymanders through 2022 to allow their fellow Republicans to take control of the House of Representatives.

We don’t want to get too carried away, but yes, there was a second good decision today.

In a case widely believed to be as big a threat to Medicaid as the Dobbs case was to abortion, the Supreme Court (again, unexpectedly) ruled in favor of the family of a Medicaid recipient who filed a civil-rights lawsuit against his state-owned nursing home. Health and Hospital Corp vs. Talevski took up the issue of whether people enrolled in social safety-net programs can sue if providers deny them guaranteed benefits.
The petitioners claimed that an Indiana man with dementia was transferred out of his facility against his will and without proper notice, and made treatment decisions, like use of unnecessary psychotropic drugs, which led to his precipitous decline and eventual death. The nursing home argued that a legal challenge tied to Medicare or Medicaid coverage could not come before the court because program rules are equivalent to government-provider contracts. A district court ruled in the nursing home’s favor, then the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that decision, and the Supreme Court upheld the appellate court’s decision in a 7-2(!) ruling. Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas—the twin towers of terrible jurisprudence—dissented.

It’s a sad state of affairs that the Supreme Court simply upholding decades of federal precedent is seen as a Big Win in 2023, but here we are. We’re girding our loins for the rest of the Supreme Court’s term, but for now, we can bask in a rare and fleeting moment of relief.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken embarked on a thorny trip to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia this week, hoping to “normalize” diplomacy between the U.S.’s two main allies in the region: Saudi Arabia and Israel. Sounds fun! Blinken participated in a joint news conference with his Saudi counterpart, where Prince Faisal bin Farhan said he hoped an agreement could be reached in which the United States would help Saudi Arabia develop a nuclear program. What could go wrong?! Saudi Arabia is home to Islam’s two holiest shrines, and like other Arab nations has for generations not recognized Israel. Prince Faisal said he agreed that normalization of relations would benefit both countries, but the benefits would be limited unless Israel made meaningful inroads towards a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians. Discussions around Saudi Arabia’s development of civilian-nuclear cooperation have stalled because Riyadh has thus far refused to agree to limits on nuclear enrichment and reprocessing designed to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. After months of anticipation, the Ukrainian military’s counteroffensive against Russian forces has officially begun, kicking off a phase of the war Kyiv hopes will restore its territorial sovereignty while maintaining Western support. Ukrainian troops intensified their attacks on the front lines of the nation’s southeast, particularly the Zaporizhzhia region, long assumed to be the most strategic and likely location of the counteroffensive. Neither Russia nor Ukraine have made significant territorial progress since an initial Ukrainian counteroffensive last fall around Kherson and Kupiansk. The head of Kherson, Oleksandr Prokudin, described four unique instances of shelling in the region on Thursday evening, in which one woman died and 17 more were injured. Hundreds of Ukrainians in the region had to be rescued from their rooftops on Thursday, after a breached dam flooded villages, fields, and roads. Ukrainian authorities and volunteers evacuated residents of the Kherson region on Thursday amid shelling from Russian forces. Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited inundated areas of the region, where he spoke to evacuees and local officials, and pleaded with international humanitarian agencies to accelerate their aid response.

"As a current Aero-Engineer for the US Air Force (26years and still going) I can help you decode at least some of this. First, I know that Grusch has only limited ability to talk about this subject. My toughts on this:
IF true, I tought these things may not really be aliens, but future human created AI machines that are studying "their" planet for who knows how many years before their time, maybe how did their planet looked like before climate catastrophe or a nuclear war..

My parents insist that I look for a job in the Sunday newspaper in addition to looking it up online. Problem is I'm trying to get a foot in IT (no experience) and all I see are senior IT positions in the listings (ie Palo Alto Sr. Network Engineer, Sunnyvale CA Sr. Software Engineer etc). I never saw an entry level position there.
Are newspapers just good for senior positions, or are IT positions in Bay Area are just saturated at the moment, or both?
Also, I've seen the same Senior level positions for weeks now, it's either Fortinet, Walmart, or Juniper Networks. Why is this the case?

2-3 years ago my veteran boyfriend and I walked into the French Camp, CA VA and got him registered. We’re trying to get him a new CPAP and the French Camp VA said they can’t help him because he’s registered for the VA in Palo Alto, CA .
Is this even possible, and wouldn’t he be able to still be seen by a doctor in French camp if he registered again? We feel like we’re going crazy speaking to the people on the phone.

To preface, I don’t intend to glorify meth. The following story is what you make of it; I am emotionally detached to the best of my ability, is what it is. This was amidst the crescendo of my tolerance, about 3 weeks into a 5 year relapse (this January), and does not nearly reflect the soul crushing dissatisfaction and boredom that eventually rises from such a substantial substance reliance. I’m two months clean and unable to sympathize with my past self despite the clarity of my recollection, most of it is a nightmare beyond the confines of my comprehension.
I had returned from Big Sur, CA after having the fabric of my ego dismantled from 7g’s of magic mushrooms and overcoming the fear of surfing completely alone for days on end. The escalating infatuation with balls to the wall meth n gambling retardation appeared to be setting with the sun. But re-ignition of my capitalist n criminal intentions, the dismal nature of Los Angeles, and loneliness compelled me to rail lines n chain smoke American Spirits in a casino parking lot quicker than I’d like to admit. Though the submission to weakness was arduous nonetheless if you believe me. I had been bestowed the most metaphysically sanctifying experience I can comprehend in Big Sur - yet, it was useless without discipline.
I was smoking a joint in my new Tesla, which defined far too of much of my self worth, listening to Bach’s Cello Suites in the Commerce Casino parking lot after winning 6k in poker at precisely 4:20 am giggling about 4:20 and the absurd nature of things. Then a swipe or two to MagicSeaweed and a sudden gust of meth fueled hotdiggity had me flooring 110mph down the 110 to Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes for an optimal direction and period.
I arrived to packed, double OH Indicators (perfect left on south end of cove) blasting 2pac and after a one last lucky inhalation of crystal comradery at the crest of dusk, I made the conscious effort to detach from any semblance of fear and conceptualize the following journey in a glorified fashion. It’s a gnarly break that was going off and all the hardcore fuckers inevitably out there evoked an ominous sense of inadequacy while waxing thy holy 7’6 gun; fortunately, I distinctly recall laughing at my pathetic need for attention and allocating the dissonance to gratefulness. It was time.
With my empathy and suspension of disbelief impaired from the meth n sleep deprivation, the brisk kilometer walk to the break conjured a narcissistic variant of my self infatuated with dominating the line up. I envisioned hypothetical, sarcastic retorts to the trust fund, gate keeping fags (is a break localized by the extremely wealthy) and ultimately deduced that silence was the most compelling expression of indifference; I can very much see it now, navigating the stone labyrinth and comparing aforementioned trust fund fags with obscure analogies to the endless rocks’ annoyance. Every subtle element of the surrounding beauty and my own dissatisfactions projected a surprisingly sustainable and callous reflection within - though fundamentally rooted in much of which I despise about myself.
I effortlessly receded from the bowels of my Machiavellian cuckery and made small talk with felllas also putting their wetsuits on; from diabolically sublime egomania to selfless banter with random dudes which I felt meant nothing, silly goose. Though that first step in the water illustrated a baptism of sorts that was capable of eradicating the vast array of transgressions eating away at me. Even now, cleaner than a Mormon, that initiation is more than capable of exposing the true intentions within. Here are all of the new US CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in May 2023, according to the Department of Energy. These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:

Tesla drivers who haven't bought the official CCS adapter yet. Certain older Teslas need additional work done to accept the adapter.
Leaf owners like me, and some owners of older cars that also use CHAdeMO. If you drive a Leaf, or an older CHAdeMO car, see my matching post in leaf.

Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.
There were 222 CCS charge points added or refreshed in May 2023, which is up from 171 in April. For comparison, there were only 74 new CCS charge points in May 2022. Things are speeding up.
"What about CCS charging at Tesla superchargers?" Tesla is in the process of rolling out their "magic dock" for non-Tesla cars, but so far in very few locations. If they start doing this at scale and reporting it to the Alternative Fuels Data Center then it will be reflected here.
"What about Ford vehicles with NACS (Tesla) plugs?" They are not on sale yet. Current-generation Ford vehicles have CCS plugs. The next generation will have NACS (Tesla) plugs, but will also support CCS via an adapter.

Palo Alto, CA. There is an easement along my property line for city power. There are three thick cable bundles running below the high tension lines. I guess comcast and telco(s) and who knows what else. A couple of months back some AT&T contractors pulled a new fiber line along there, but it was either a long day or they were frustrated by the landscaping and just draped that fiber cable through the brush without fastening it to an existing cable run. It droops a good three ft. below where it should be and is in a prime location for a gardener to accidentally sever it. I’ve tried several times to notify AT&T and get crickets. I could throw an extension ladder up there and wire tie it myself, but I think AT&T would not like that either.
What should I do?

Hi everyone, my name is X. My parents are both govt employees and we are a very well to do family. So from childhood I have been into coding, computers etc. I used to code games in class 8 on visual basic,etc languages and from childhood (lower nursery std) I was introduced to the world of computers. My passion was coding and aim was to do something in CSE or coding. Last year in class 10th I came to know about IIT-JEE, and thought of preparing for it. I was always passionate about my career and hardworking. I came to know about the concept of dummy schools in November, December from an elder brother of mine, who went through non-schooling and got 97.7%ile in Jan attempt. Serious about my career, I thought it would be best to get enrolled in that school which my mom and I did in January after pre-boards. To inform you all I live in Kolkata, and the culture of dummy school is not prevalent here. After board examinations in March I went on a trip to Darjeeling which was the best week in my life. After that everything turned upside down. When I came back in April, I went to my first classes in Aakash (weekend batch). It was awesome. I was supposed to attend the dummy school on the first day which was 12th of April, and then not attend it anymore at all except the midterms and finals. So I went there. The school was actually not affiliated to CBSE but they apparently have a tie up with some bigger affiliated school. During practicals and boards we are supposed to go there to give the exams wearing that school's uniform. Looking at the conditions it cannot be called a school actually. I attended the school and the environment was shit. 3 people behind me had apparently failed in grade 6, people were all failures or something and the teachers were absolute scammers whom I can't even determine have proper degrees or not, they were pure scamsters. And the whole experience was extremely traumatic. I came back home. 13th April: I started doubting a 100 things. One thing that came to mind was how could I actually give the class 12 board practical exams if they didn't even practice any practical with me. I posted about all this on reddit days after days coming to know in places like Kota or Delhi NCR coachings like Allen teach the students practicals some weeks b4 the exams. For practicals here, what they do is they send these students to that big school with that school's uniform and make them copy paste/cheat from a sheet of paper despite an invigilator being near. This made me highly anxious and worried, everything was uncertain. Actually the whole dummy school system was integrated with the coachings in these states. In here places like Kolkata that culture is absent. These non affiliated but tied up schools basically run illegally. Anyways…14th April: My birthday, everyone wishing me on WhatsApp the whole day and I'm worried about this school shit……I understood I have come to a wrong place and need to shift to a proper school, after interaction with the people properly I understood they were frauds. 15th - 25th : Pure hell, no studies only researching for schools, roaming around in the streets in car with mom who was getting extreme harrasment and as a result beating the shit out of me which is fine. Finally I landed a school which was taking in admissions but they were about 1 hr away from my house and it was not possible…so mom said no. In May first week my father who works in Ladakh (all India services) got severely ill due to sugar fall and went into ICU in Leh hospital. My mom went there to my dad on flight. For a whole week I stayed at the house of my school friend, still doing nothing with such mental condition. On 14th May my ICSE results came out and I got 91.8%, while everyone congratulated I was traumatized, (in between lot of things happening, irrelevant). I again contacted schools whom I knew would open up after board results. Got one top level school who were still taking in admissions in Science stream….my dad and mom returned on 16th May ig….then my dad admitted me to the new school with the following subjects - PCM, BIOTECHNOLOGY, BENGALI ( the school had already started and they forced 6 subjects down my throat, physical education was not available nor cs…if science then only this combo). The school was not giving science to the people who were trying to get admitted after boards but they readily gave it to me looking at my board marks. Their tests would start by the end of June and their school would resume at 12th June….I had done almost nothing till then and biotechnology+vernacular would be a horrific combo for a JEE aspirant. With such a combination, shortage of time and the vast syllabus already covered in 1½ months, i knew I could not cope up. Switched my stream to commerce on 29th May. Btw getting de-admitted from that fraudster school is a different story so skipping since irrelevant.
I was a dedicated student, from childhood I wanted to be into CSE, made a lot of projects and stuff, but now my identity, fate, etc everything got ruined because of one bad decision that was to go to that dummy school and that too from a good intention. My life is ruined, my aspirations, goals, everything. My mom and dad has faced so much harrasment the last two months mentally, physically, financially (loosing a lakh in Aakash). I'm from a well to do family and all this wasn't supposed to happen, everything got ruined because of one wrong step. Now that after so much bullshit I have come to commerce I feel terrible that I can never get into coding….but I'll try my best to excel in this field. My dad even after so much harrasment is staying positive and saying to focus on IPMAT, and for backup target eco hons. colleges like SRCC, Delhi school of economics, Xavier's, St Stephen's and then MBA with CAT+ try to get 98+ in boards now that it's commerce.
I'm feeling ruined from inside because my dream of going into USA, my identity as a techie, coding skills, dreams of being a coder, start-up,etc everything is crushed for some stupid reason which only happened with me alone ….why me??? I watched shows like Silicon Valley, Bojack Horseman, friends, big bang theory, Rick and Morty, South Park, Seinfeld,etc and dreamt of USA. Ok no issue with that being ruined….but my identity as a coder, a techie? My career? Last two months I couldn't eat properly, study, watch shows, every moment just reimagining myself singning up in a proper school in 10th, calling 100s of people, feeling like a vegetable doing nothing in such a mental state, etc everything. Travelling school to school in burning heart in my car, getting beaten up by mom, then worrying for one week when my mom was not there and my dad was extremely sick in ICU. I'm just 17 why is this happening with me.
Can anyone tell me what to do now, any consoling words? Is there any possibility I can grab a coding job if I do something right from now? Dropping from school? Or should I forget coding and my passion CSE and focus on building a career in management. Is there hope in MBA if I can do it from top institutes like IIM, XLRI, any kind of career guidance would be great. I'm doubtful whether there are good career prospects in commerce stream (and I'm absolutely not interested in CA,etc). And if I can't go back into CSE, I want to get into the top of the game in commerce and want a pathway to earn most money in future and get to the top (people like Ajay Banga,etc) as a compensation to what happened with me the last 2 months. I think I'll have diabetes now. Why did this had to happen? I'm completely drained physically, mentally, emotionally, etc. I've considered sui*cide a lot of times, do you think that can be a viable option from here? What should I do? Btw if you check my reddit history it's filled with related questions in last two months. I want peace now. The thing is such unique turn of bad events has never happened in anyone's life I Guess. I'm confused with who I'm, my identity. And btw so much worse shit has happened in between but I had to skip them else it would be too long to finish and coming to the point.
