Title.
Around half a year ago, I made a post detailing how DMT (back then) was in a terrible state. Since then, a few notable things have happened that I feel warrants it to have another look at.
First off, back in Season of the Plunder, Bungie massively buffed the hipfire accuracy on DMT such that the accuracy cone prioritized headshots/criticals over body shots (when prior to this it did the opposite). This change was both good and bad for the weapon: good in the sense that it made it viable again in PvP but bad in the sense that it was overtuned and caused the weapon to experience a massive spike in usage. As a result, Bungie nerfed it again. While it was warranted, they once again went too far.
So where are we now? DMT has two main benefits that make it “exotic”: - Cranial Spike, where precision hits increase reload speed, handling, and accuracy up to x5 in which the RPM of the weapon is increased to 180 while hip-firing (up from a base of 120). Each stack also provides a small damage increase in PvE. - Dark Forged Trigger (Catalyst), “removes” hip-fire penalties and increases the RPM of the gun while hip-firing to 130. Cranial Spike use to provide a damage bonus only in both PvP/PvE and Dark Forged Trigger use to make the hip-fire fire at 150 RPM and actually remove hip-fire penalties. Both have been substantially nerfed to the point that the gun fails in all aspects. Short range? Good luck with 150 hand cannons and SMGs. Long range? Good luck with Jade Rabbit or Hung Juries or Long Arm, the legendary DMT equivalent. It feels pointless.
TL;DR - DMT feels like crap right now, worse than ever before

Soooo here’s the story… Bare with me..
I moved to a new state almost four years ago after a six year failed relationship/split/custody agreements. I didn’t know anyone in the state other than one aunt that I hadn’t seen in years. I live in a major city and I basically had to start from ground zero career and all to get myself established.
During this time there was a business I would go to frequently because of how close it was to my house and I ended up getting to know the manager. Long story short we started seeing each other and basically spent the next two years together. He was my best friend and partner I really cared about him deeply, and he was better to me than anyone else ever had been. I must say I wasn’t the best person ever to him truthfully because of my previous separation which was a very toxic relationship adjusting to joint custody and trying to build a foundation in a new city, I wasn’t ready to settle down the way he wanted me to so I ended the relationship. It really hurt him and he didn’t want to end things but I knew that I wasn’t capable to give him what he really wanted and honestly deserved.
I stopped going to the business that he managed and went about my life. I apologized for the hurt I put him through and paid my respects he moved on and got a girlfriend. Throughout the first few months of their relationship he begged me to be with him but I denied and soon after had minimal contact for two years.
Plot twist…
My boss comes in to the office one day a couple months ago, talking about a new café that just opened up around the corner. my boss actually has me grab lunch there frequently now because the office ended up really liking it.
However unbeknownst to me, the manager of the new café is my ex. Once I realize this, I would go in grab the items that were pre-ordered. Be polite say hi and get what I needed not trying to really engage in any real contact. He would always make it a point to make sure that I had to have some type of interaction with him. For example, always being near me when I’m there and trying to spark up small talk. I can tell by the way that he goes out of his way to interact with me that he still has some type of feelings for me.
Today I went into his store and for the first time he made it very obvious that he was flirting with me to the point where he admitted that he will always like seeing me and asked me if I still think about him and asking me when will he see me again…. There has always been a chemistry between us and honestly I’ve thought about him a lot in the past couple of years.
I know this sounds terrible and I’ll probably catch shade but I can’t seem to get away from this kid. We ALWAYS somehow end up crossing paths and it’s starting to stir up some old feelings in me. 🤦🏻‍♀️
I’m not the type to intrude into someone’s relationship and I would never want to hurt someone or have anything similar happen to me vice-versa but I can’t help how I feel and I’m not sure what to do with it especially since I have to go into his business frequently due to my office and now he’s made it clear that he is still interested in me.
We went through a lot in our time together and shared so much of our lives and what we have been through as people and honestly I do really care for him but I know it’s just not right for me to care for someone who’s engaged.
I know I should tell my boss I no longer want to go into his business but another part of me has this wanting to be around him and see if there is something real behind us that I will always question myself that I missed out on..

FOREWORD

Having played the game in its original version last week I felt at the same time charmed by the gameplay/mood and kinda puzzled/frustrated by the story. I will add my review in a different post.
Looking around to find an explanation, I didnt find anything really consistent. In fact I found other people sharing the same frustration toward the elusive plot.
But I did find out there was a director's cut version and ended up watching long parts of a video walkthrough of the DC version. Even the game plot still remains fairly elusive , It turned out to be a lot more complete/rounded up.
Scrubbing through key moments and comparing both versions, I ended up figuring out a narrative that would make sense of the plot. So to perfectly clear, this is a spoiler full guide for people who ended up frustrated by the mysteries of the game. I DISADVISE READING IF YOU HAVENT PLAYED THE GAME.
I will refer to the original game as OG and the Director's cut as DC. When I dont mention anything it normally means that the quote stays the same in both version. A few words about DC itself from the author itself

The original plan was to make a series of games with Kathy right off the bat, thus the tagline and unresolved questions at the end.
I wont get in all changes of the DC but here are a few :
-lily and the grey double of the crimson one seem to disappear
(And correspondingly no mention of queen and knight anymore. And king) . Probably to tighten the story around existing character
the grey man in dream day 3 is completely substituted by the crimson man , performing the exact same role with the boy and the painting
-The crimson man has more importance
-And the crimson eye appear on screen in the abyss
overall DC version simplifies/eliminate obscure part , stresses some part/adds more specific details to convey its secret plot in much more accessible way
but in some part, the writer seems to have partly changed the mystic plot
regarding Lily , Father Isaac answers on day 4 once he's jailed

while she's both described as "a conundrum" in both OG and DC, her ultimate fate dramatically differs : in OG : in death ascended united with the holy conduit (and she materializes indeed as the three lights on day 5 in the below dimension)
in DC : Alas there is no hiding from god. Her soul knows only fire and brimstone now. (and she doesnt appear at all in the DC version )

PART 1 SOURCES OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUPERNATURAL PLOT

You have 6 sources of mystic information
but some might not be reliable or only partly reliable
*Jimmy Cochran (on tape and on day 4) . They are several characteristics that make him the prime authority about the plot.
-he considers himself the sharpest tool in the box. It's a frequent trope in fiction to reverse the obvious : King Lear sees the duplicity of his daughters once he becomes blind. Mad men are frequently the sane character in fiction.
-he shows by far the largest awareness of what’s going on in the game, commenting on almost every aspect of the plot.
-He is also the most cryptic to the point Kathy express her frustration
-He calls out other witness - he calls the church of holy trinity “misguided faithful”
-He has a very peculiar condition : his mind was split in two.
*Father bill notes/tape :
Partly unreliable base on Jimmy Cochran opinion. His tape is considerably expanded in DC .
*Priest Isaac you met him on day 1,3 but he becomes especially open once he’s arrested on day 4
Very unreliable based on four elements
-Jimmy : the church of the holy trinity are “misguided”
- even father Bill disapproves of his actions (made very clear in DC version)
-Isaac can’t see the Crimson man once his father dies.
Isaac commits suicide upon hearing the tape of his father disapproval
-his vision of Lily's fate change dramatically between OG and DC version.
His opinion isnt' meaningless but it's arguable at best, tangential at worst.
However both Jimmy and Priest Isaac call Lily a chronicler so he might be partly right
*The Crimson man (and indirectly his Grey double in dreams of day 2 and 3 in OG version)
*Lily who appears only in OG Version on Day 5 in the Abyss toward the end
* Joseph Rain at the end in both OG and DC version

PART 2 THEORY ABOUT THE SUPERNATURAL PLOT/LORE

The supernatural plot can be summarized in 3 key ideas.
1-The lights/below dimension are real but not divine, simply dangerous natural phenomenon
The below/source/cradle of darkness/ holy of the holies (isaac) is essentially a distorted mirror dimension
2- the below distorts desires and fears
2-1 Father Bill and his son Isaac are both tormented person who projected their own religious desires/fears inside the below and created the Crimson one/ the Old god
2-2 the Crimson one is Isaac
2-3 the Old god is Father Bill
2-4 a doctrine of salvation with different application : although they both want to save sinners, Father bill and Isaac vision of the mending is significantly different.
3- the below also distorts time .
3-1In the real world the time is in a loop creating possible time paradox
3-2 Below the time flows differently
3-3 people who have a connection with the below can acquire foretelling ability
3-4 Lily

SECTION 1-the lights, the below dimension and the red flowers are real dangerous phenomenon.

1.1 the lights are not hallucination, they are real
proof : because of the photo taken by Jimmy Cochran and found in Joseph Rain briefcase on day 1 and developed on day 2)
-But they are not divine, they are a dangerous natural phenomenon
proof
Jimmy : the lights are neither divine nor unholy. They are but a distortion of ourselves
Joseph in unit tape on day 4 in DC version expands considerably on their nature :
I have come to believe that the glowing lights are burst of energy, similar to the static discharge that cause lightning . However instead of a positive and a negative electric charge , the colliding forces have a dimensional nature. Assuming this hypothesis is correct, the lights would only appear at the edge of the zone.
Their nature is much more arguable in OG but in DC they first and foremost are a sign you ‘re entering the zone of the threshold : the dark pit where your mind can enter another dimension. The source/below (what the church call the holy of holies).
Being a place of collision between the dimensions touching the lights can have disastrous consequences depending on the invidual.
1.2 The red flowers
They allow to properly enter the below dimension.
By extension they are the real link to this alternate dimension. That’s why Kathy burns them at the end in order to cut off the source.
Joseph DC version on day 5 : I've come to understand the red flowers anchor this realm to the real world
1.3 The below/source/cradle of obscurity/ the holy of holies
it is a essentially a distorted mirror of our own dimension in 2 way
Joseph in DC version on day 5 : I can only give you my pointless theories which range from everything between divine punishment and a mindless force of nature

Section 2- The below distorts fear and desire

intro - the fundamentally twisted nature of the below
Jimmy (talking about the lights) they are but twisted reflection of us. Everything we long for and desire
Joseph DC version : it takes each of your fears , every source of guilt and turns them against us
in the other hand it's mostly useless on unconflicted, pure individual like happy christian Eileen
In DC version when Kathy opens her aborted child coffin, the Crimson man makes a difference between people : his kind like broken people like her who can be mended/who embrace them -Kathy is conflicted with his anger toward her father who abandoned her, her guilt toward her mother for putting her in an asylum , her guilt toward the kid she aborted as a teenager. Joseph is a really good person but he felt in great pain for losing Kathy which makes him a good candidate for the mending too.
Happy go lucky people like Kathy's friend Eileen are simply “greedy little piglets that seem to get away " Another example is Nathan, the brother of Lily : he is introduced as simple minded, with a childish mind , void of internal conflict and as a result the lights don’t affect him.
The below needs tormented people to work
Speaking of tormented people …
2-1-Father Bill and his son Isaac are tormented person whose own religious desires/fears are distorted inside the below/source/cradle creating the Crimson man/ the Old god and made this place what we see in the game
Again Jimmy points out how the church of the holy trinity is wrong, calling them "misguided faithful" and stating "the lights are neither divine nor unholy"
But let's wind black the clock to the genesis of the Church in spring 71
Bill had 2 sons : Joshua and Isaac - those are very religious name . You don't name give those kind of name twice by accident.
The Price family mausoleum shows that Joshua was born in 61 and Isaac in 59. So it seems to strongly imply that BEFORE Bill even became a pastor, back when was still a traveling salesman, he had already a very religious mind.
-Also both Father Bill and his son Isaac are shown to be very conflicted individual
concerning Father Bill and the creation of the church , his own son Isaac expressedly established he was a conflicted individual at the time of the incident

this day was different. My father held dark thoughts in his mind. He was angry, thinking of evil deeds, even considering swerving off the road into a rock and ending it all. Then suddenly, divine internation! three bright lights appeared.

not only but upon hearing Father Bill tape on day 4 ) in DC version (where it becomes much more expressive than OG) , Kathy specificially exclaims "Jeez, Father Bills was a nutty! "
Isaac shows even stronger inner conflict - not only commits a desperate suicide after hearing his father disapproval , he was already a conflicted individual in his youth oh yes I was a teenager back then, full of rebellion, every fiber of my being wanting to distance myself from my father
2-2 the crimson man is Isaac reborn after suicide
It might seem surprising because Isaac exists at the same time as Isaac and even condemns the Crimson one. Now let’s put aside the mechanics of how it works for a moment there are 6 proofs of the identity of the Crimson one
*2-2-1 Jimmy “Let's go see the man you reunited with his family” on day 4
Jimmy speaks in riddles when interrogated by Kathy on day 4. But when it comes to the Crimson man Jimmy describes him in a very odd and specific way “Let's go see the man you reunited with his family”.
-Isaac family are all dead based on the Price familial mauselum . There are 7 graves. Isaac grave is the only one without a death date.
-The tv in jail /father billy says “Welcome home son” when Priest Isaac kills himself
- Jimmy can see the future /all timeline , so he can see Kathy giving Isaac the information leading to his suicide which “reunite him with his family” since they’re all dead
* 2-2-2 the portrait of father bill crying blood on day 4
when Kathy touches the lights on day 4: she has a vision of the Crimson man issuing mockery statement about victims that make Father bill portrait cry blood
In DC version the content of the tape left by father Bill in the safe behind the portrait is made much more explicit than in OG

my visions concerning my sons are troubling ... I've watched them become corrupted with pride, turning their backs on the very foundations of our faith ... I've seen great sins committed : Act of violence and intimidation ,. Outsiders brought to hallowed ground with neither reverence nor ritual “ there are dark dreams indeed. I pray that they never come to pass, lest my soul shall weep tears of blood

this is Father Bill vision about Isaac come to pass.
*2-2-3 -Jimmy in OG version on day 4 says the Crimson man is a great ally of Joseph
At face value it seems very confusing considering Joseph very much wants to close the source.
It makes a lot more sense when you consider Isaac had huge respect for Joseph. here's what Isaac says of Joseph on day 3
He and my father did charity work together, Joseph was around a lot when I was young. Joseph was the person who convinced me to become a priest Jospeh made me realize my sinful pride and showed me how I should follow my heart , regardless of what others might think. And for that I am eternally grateful.
2-2-4 : The crimson one is repeatedly referred as having no name/ lost his name.
-The crimson man wheen he meets Kathy on day 3 says his name has been taken from him
that's because the Crimson man exist at the same time as Isaac (as for the why we're going to talk about time in Kathy Rain) : so he cannot call himself Isaac anymore.
specifically in DC it's added on the tape of Father Bill on day 4 the Crimson one is described in the following way
only he is poised to understand the struggle of those who are lost : the broken and guilt ridden .To have no name is to have a shattered spirit.
Isaac feels extremely guilty over his actions to the point he committed suicide and his spirit is very much shattered.
*2-2-5 he looks vaguely like an hairless version of Isaac with black eyes

2-3 As for the Old God it is arguably Father Bill himself.
in DC version there is the appearance of a great red eye
the Crimson one talks with a great red eye on tv on day 2 , the great red eye appears again on tv on day 5
And Isaac describes Father bill trial in the following way :
under the watchful gaze of his GREAT EYE, God tested father's faith in countless ways. Fueled by conviction and a sense of purpose, Father persevered.
in OG and DC it is pointed out that Father Bill ascended to unite with God. That is the ultimate god of the mending.
in OG Father bill notes have specifically notes with initial in front of the description of people who ascended : it is marked "FB ?" in blue (arguable who wrote that. The only logical choice would be Kathy but it's still kinda shaky. Those notes disappear in OG)
Also the TV in the prison seem to be Father Bill speaking since he says "welcome home son" when Isaac commits suicide.
which echoes the fact the great eye is on the tv in the below
2-4 the agenda is nothing but a twisted version of christian theology and rites
2-4-1 the Mending, a hardcore twist on Christian idea of salvation
to Kathy question once Isaac is in jail what is your church really about Isaac ? what are your trying to accomplish Isaac answers in a surprisingly honest and self-aware way "the same as any other church. All we want is the salvation of mankind"
The "Mending" is at the core of the dogma of the church of holy trinity and it's about salvageing the sinners. As shown by the notes of Father Bill you recover in a safe on day 4
it reflects Father Bill and Isaac desire to save people although they seem differently motivated. Father Bill might truly believe this/act out compassion and reflects his own desire of salvation.In the other hand, Isaac faith seem far less benevolent and shows a lot of pride/moral superiority : You can try child. I have God on my side. Regarding the God he worships, he makes very clear it's a different kind of God , Old might as well mean original here : Of course not. I am talking about the Old God, slumbering in the darkness beyond and it's a way once again to give Isaac some superiority/ pride because HE knows the “real” god.
Incidentally the "Old God" name is also interesting - because while Catholic church insist that there is only one God, an idea that frequently circulates about the Christian God is that the Ancien and New testament are two different gods. The Ancient testament God is associated with cataclysms and ominous warnings and punishment while Jesus frequently preaches God Love in the New Testament . Kathy rain kinda rides on that idea of a terrible mysterious god /ancient testament like so the Old God is fitting.
2-4-2 a controversial doctrine that involves pain
Like most zealot their faith can turn kinda inhumane and cruel though. In theory it is well meaning. They want people to be happy osave them. But it’s still based on the predicate most people are sick/sinner. Isaac is the worst.
The Crimson one refers to it as “taking one's medicine”
about Lily : He wanted her to take her medicine (Nathan recollection about Lily and the crimson one)
About Kathy before she gets in the source : All we want is for you to take you medicine Kathy. For you to grow and be happy.
But the mending and generally the connection with the below can make people tremendously suffer (lily, jimmy) and sometimes outright break mentally some people-turn them catatonic (joseph, eileen and countless unnamed other victim according to Isaac himself) :
Regarding the possible failure of the mending, the Crimson man is slightly apologetic about it: “What one wants and what one is able to do are different “ The crimson one doesn’t force people the way Isaac does even if he's not entirely above manipulation.
In the other hand, Isaac is so focused on his divine mission that he’s straight up indifferent to the people. It's not only collateral damage (A necessary evil. I look at the bigger picture, the greater good.) When pushed, Isaac clearly shows his colors, if it fails it's very much the fault of the sinner. All I did was bring them face to face with God. If they chose to reject him , they were beyond redemption.
That‘s the pride Father Bill was warning against. Isaac is extremely self-righteous and considers he knows better and can do no wrong. Which is pretty rich because Isaac is aping his father but without understanding much about his doctrine and arguably being outright ignorant about some of its aspects.
2-4-3 Isaac shortcomings : ignorance, lack of empathy and pride
It is specifically suggested that Isaac is far less convincing than his father (besides his lack of charisma, his lack of empathy sure didn't help).

-the church flourished and continued to grow all the way up until his suddent death in 1983.That's when I stepped in to take leadership of the Church
-I take it that the church started declining after the death of Father Bill ?
-yes naturallly so, with such an magnetic personality he was irreplaceable

Isaac quickly tries to defend the church is still thriving but Kathy points out two signs that things are relatively dire for the church now :
about the church : Looks kinda empty to me
about her first meeting with Isaac at the cemetary : What's up with you handing out pamphlets at funerals then ? trying to reel them in when they're weak ?
And that’s why the Crimson one Disappears as soon as Isaac takes over. See Isaac testimony once he’s arrested and how he rejects the notion of Kathy even meeting the Crimson one.

Preposterous. No one has seen that apostate since Father’s death.

The Crimson One disappears because Isaac is simply unable to Bring willingly subject to the faith , in such a way the Crimson one refuses to have anything to do with this. The Crimson one wants willing subject.
Remember that the Crimson one doesn’t oppose Kathy leaving before the stairs of judgment /right at the threshold of the mending :

This is crazy, I could just walk away , just ride on my bike and drive. Forget I was ever here.
Nothing is stopping you.

She has to do it on her own free will .
In DC version Father Bill tape says so explicitedly : the mending is a gift and a duty. But it must begin in the heart of a true believer. Someone who yearns for change and possesses the dedication and perseverance to achieve it.
In spite of trying to look all-knowing, it’s very arguable whether Isaac even knows where is the Treshold pit to the below. :
that’s probably why he steals Lily painting. Since the Crimson one disappeared he wanted to bring the sinners to the treshold himself . But he doesn't know where the treshold is. He figures that since Lily received divine knowledge from God, her painting might give clues about where to find the treshold . He's not entirely wrong since Lily painting clearly helped Joseph Rain to find the Source. He's just wrong about those being some sort of secret he needs to unlock by defacing the paintings.
His storage unit makes his frustration clear as he not only deface all her painting to find a secret Clue but writes on the wall "where is it ? " (the stealing must at least happen after 1981 since Joseph saw all of them ) the fact he disfigures them looking for a secret truth also fit his pride/superiority complex : there has to be a secret truth - one he’s the only fit to perceive.
-Remember he brings Eileen to his father mausoleum. And he doesnt need to know where the treshshold is to find red flowers : it is shown the red flower grows also at the edge of the forest
-Although he says he brought sinners to the stair of judgment, considering his gigantic pride he might simply be lying rather than admit he doesn’t even know something as central to his faith . In fact he considers even “preposterous “ the very idea of Kathy meeting the Crimson one when HE has been actively looking for him for years. The entire worldview of Isaac is based on the idea is a faithful servant of the Old God and he has superior knowledge and needs to guide the lost souls/ teach them the secret truth.
As for why the Crimson one and Isaac MO differs in spite of being originally the same person : remember that Isaac is very distraught by hearing his father stern disapproval and wonder outloud if has strayed from the faith, eventually committing suicide soon afterward. The Crimson one is his reborn version whose ways are corrected to fit his father gentler faith.
I will atone for my sins
But how is it even possible for the Crimson one and Isaac being in the first place ? . That brings us to the time aspect of Kathy Rain.

Section 3-time loop and foretelling ability

3-1 time loop in the real world
It’s Kinda hard to fully understand how time works in Kathy Rain world but the game seems to strongly suggest the real world is going through a time loop
-Jimmy seems to say that Kathy and him had this conversation several times in spite of her not remembering it And she is “ doing so much better than the last time”
-in the director’s cut : “what came before must come again “ on Kathy father postcard in the hole he fell into in the abyss on day 5
3-2 time stand still in the below
And the mirror dimension seem to also distort time . Time pretty much seems to stand still in in the below.
Joseph talking about the time he went catatonic says : “it hasn’t been so long from my point of view”. It clearly implies that time doesn’t flow the same way in the abyss as in real world
While the real world runs in loops , the below arguably stand still or very slow. It might explain the time paradox of having both Isaac and the Crimson one : Isaac commits suicide in one time loop and is reborn as the Crimson one ( that's the entire nature of time paradoxes )
3-3 foretelling
So if people create a connection with the below/the source they can see the future through the below but the toll on the mind is huge.
Jimmy Says he’s “below watching reruns “
Jimmy states Lily can see “the loops, the infinite possibilities ”
-Jimmy also saw Kathy “over a great pit throwing the last memento of [her father] into the empty blackness below” ( which echoes her fight with her dad in the abyss on day 5)
There are even subtler hints like the message “inkier hearth / hopes in jar nemesis rule ” (which are anagrams for katherine rain, joseph rain, eileen summers ) found by Kathy on the fridge in the abyss in day 5 which is announced by the tv/father bill when she gets out of jail in day 4
This foretelling stuff brings us to Lily.
3-4 Lily
as for Lily : I’d say this part of the plot is really messy. What she can exactly do, what was the church plan for her, what is her ultimate fate.

While she may be free in death , her cold wet hands still trap many in painful ignorance.

Lily was meant to be the one to really propagate the message and convert people to the religion.
Lily turns very unhappy once she found the lights and had visions.
In OG Isaac says she was “part prophet, part mender” in life. Arguably the reason of her suffering and unhappiness was the very visions she received. Consider also that Jimmy vision are not nearly as strong as Lily - he can only perceives some words ,. And consider that as a grown man it was already too Much and he was eventually interned
Lilly is specifically urged by the Crimson Man to “take her medicine” (which means undergoing the mending based on Crimson comment to Kathy) and “fights” with him according to Nathan .
Whether it was because she was unhappy and the Crimson one is naturally attracted to unhappy people or because the mending would have made her a better prophet/completed her connection is arguable . At any rate she resisted : most likely because she had already enough disturbing visions and the mending seemed to involve even more emotional pain.
With those core ideas setup, the chronology of events now makes some sense.

Spring 1971 William Price find the lights and becomes Father Bill

aged 15 and her brother Nathan finds the lights
the event happen on the lake in DC version, in a forest on OG version.
Although Lily used to draw since she was 10, her art change dramatically at this moment . She earns some foretelling ability in the process. Still she’s very disturbed and unhappy about the visions she receive as witnessed by her mother. The Crimson man urges her to undergo the mending which she most likely reject. She become more and more depressed /her painting become darker and darker.

around 1981 Jimmy Cochran finds the lights and his mind split
-Jimmy Cochran somehow stumbles upon the lights in the forest . irresistibly drawn to them, he can’t help touching them and his mind is split in two : one part goes below, one part stays upside in his body. He confides to Joseph, a childhood friend and fellow pilot, about the lights. The latter then decides to find the source and cut it off to save Jimmy
(arguably Joseph also might have bought into the whole “mending” stuff of the church and looking for emotional healing - he apparently respects Father Bill and he is in great emotional pain at this point in his life - he’s missing Kathy and trying hard to get her back as shown by his appeal for custody paperwork dated 1981/07/15. ) .

Not only that but it strongly hint , especially in DC version, that to end he’s looking for the lights and finds one of the lights through Lily painting :
In both version, Lily’s mother specifically says Joseph asked "if Lily had painted something odd or strange" he looked at her paintings and clearly saw something immediately then he wrote something down on a piece of paper, thanked me and left .
Not only that, his accident happened soon after Now that I think about it, that whole ordeal happened to him not long after he came here A week maybe at the most

And one of Joseph tape in DC version state clearly Assuming this hypothesis is correct, the lights would only appear at the edge of the zone. Joseph groundwork is actually the basis for us/Kathy triangulating the treshhold in the DC version by noting the places of apparition of the lights on the map. )
Joseph dedication to finding the source, inner turmoil about Kathy makes him a prime candidate for the mending and the Crimson man even starts visiting his dreams to prepare him.
On 1981/08/16 he eventually finds the threshold, enters the Source , fail the mending and his body goes catatonic for the next 14 years.
The source left untouched, Jimmy grows increasingly erratic. He eventually gets interned around 1982-1983 according to Charles Wade.
1983 Father Bill dies/ Isaac takes over the church
-When Father Bill dies on 21 October 1983 , Isaac takes over and the church flock quickly shrinks

Strongly believing in the divine mission of the church, Isaac cannot accept that turn of events.
The crimson one abandoned us all and the divine work now rest on my shoulders.
At first Isaac intends to bring to sinners to the threshold himself and becomes a substitute for the Crimson one . That’s why he steals Lily’s painting to find the treshold, hoping to unlock secret knowledge that would put him on the path the the threshold.
Obsessed about it, he will write “where is it ? ” on the wall of the locker unit where he keeps the defaced stolen paining.
Ultimately Isaac ends up creating a new MO : No consent, no preparation by the Crimson one in dreams or otherwise, not trip to the treshold. He will single-handedly forces people to the mending
That’s what Father Bill called : turning their back on the very foundation of our faith .
Isaac full alternative MO is uncertain but seems to mostly involve force-fedding the red flower to his victims in order to bring them to God/trigger the mending then bringing Them to the familial mausoleum to ask for his father help (having a real or imaginary talk with his father OG version while mostly quoting a medley of Bible verses related to purification of the soul in DC version ).

1995 Kathy investigation
Joseph body, catatonic for the past 14 years, finally dies. Kathy comes back home.
Although Joseph accident is not directly related to Isaac actions , Kathy investigation in what happened to her grandfather (which required searching about the source and the church) , eventually uncovers the kidnappings of Isaac.
In the process her friend Eileen is forcefully “mended” by Isaac which leads Kathy to confront Isaac. Hearing his father stern disapproval about his actions, Isaac entire worldview collapses.
His spirit shattered , he eventually commits suicide swearing to "atone for his sins" (which will leads to him in a time loop to being reborn as the nameless Crimson one - Father Bill describing the Crimson one in DC version to have no name is to have a shattered spirit - The reborn Isaac will be now more respectful of freewill.).
A little later, Kathy finds the treshold, breathes the red flowers, descend the stair of judgment , goes through the 3 trials and complete the mending.
Going out she burns the flower cutting off the the source / curing Eileen (and arguably Jimmy).

So as I started speaking out more, he then did more underhanded tricks to discredit my talents. I screwed up, I made a mistake due to the pressure cooker I have been under and reacted to a situation when I should have held my composure in public. There was his opening to demote me and move me to another department. Here's how the past few days went down: Day 1 I was called into his office with hr. Since I have seen his tactics before I had already been working on documenting everything. When they told me about the demotion, I was ready to call out times and dates of all the abusive behavior. He thought I would placate like I had before. He was surely mistaken because what he never suspected was I had everything ready to go because his pattern of behavior was the same. I wish I could have verbalized it better, but I did the best I could. They got the point that I was serious. When I realized I needed to take a breather to figure out the next steps, I asked to go to the bathroom. Note to all those out there when always bring a water bottle to every meeting as it allows you to take a pause if you need to. If you are ambushed like I was and you need a minuet to gather your thoughts ask to go to the bathroom. I called my support system and asked for advice. They said tell them you want to continue the next day. So I came back in asked him if he was sure if this is what he wanted, as it puts his feet to the fire to be direct and honest. And then I asked if we can continue the conversation the next day.
I called an employment lawyer right away. Got their legal advise on the situation. Not to mention, I'm just crying the entire time. Meet up with another professional to get their advice and go home and work on my statement. This is why it is amazing the people in your life who have seen your struggles and are there for you. One of the most brilliant friends I know helped me craft a beautiful statement.
Day 2 regroup for a meeting, I come prepared for the letter in my pocket. Another piece of advice is writing affirmations for yourself and I had that in my notebook infront of me. I am loved, I am valuable, I deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. I read this perfectly crafted letter and looked at him dead in the eyes. I did not faulter its like I had the power of all my support of the people in my life behind me and all the others who left or were let go because of him. I called them out on all of their bullshit, he lied and said this didn't happen and I said yes it did with conviction and certainly. Then there was a mutual beneficial agreement for my departure.
Here we are a few days later and its a lot to process. But for those of you out there who were like me and thought I can take it, it's not that bad, can't I stay and make it work. No the answer is always no. When I was getting myself sick, my friend said to me I am a sane person and this is your bodies reaction to insanity. It's not worth it ever your life is more important

I’m in England, I got fired yesterday as my absence at work was unacceptable apparently. I never took the piss, the job I was hired to do required heavy lifting and a LOT of driving often over 200 miles daily delivering groceries/in home appliances. I’ve been there 16 months. I had 7 absence occurrences each for varied amounts ranging from 2 days off to 2 weeks. 4 of my absences were due to muscular problems ranging from sprained ankle to straining muscles in my back and neck not being mobile enough to ensure the safety of myself and other road users whilst driving a 3.5 ton van. One of these was for 2 weeks whilst the doctor prescribed antibiotics to reduce inflammation across my shoulders and neck. The other 3 were simply due to having the shits/stomach bug. They made a point, as we handled food items, that nobody should come to work for at least 24 hours after experiencing any stomach/sickness issues. Each absence was reviewed in a meeting which took place yesterday and honestly I feel that all were valid as I 1. Wouldn’t of been able to drive safely and would of been putting others at risk by driving when I couldn’t use the mirrors properly and 2. I would of been handling food items potentially contaminating them and handing them to customers. I have 7 days to appeal this decision and if successful will be reinstated, I’d really appreciate any help towards structuring an email to begin the appeals process. TIA

I've been noticing a massive narcissistic attitude within photography recently, particularly on social media, where photographers who have a big following through their Instagram or YouTube channel get to the point where they simply can't take any sort of constructive suggestions about their content, because they feel they know more & are much better than the rest.
And what's worse, anything you point out to them will either get deleted, or worse, their "sheep" fanboy followers who suck up to their every post & constantly kiss their asses, will often get into defensive mode & try to debate you on the subject & praise them at the same time.
I don't know about anybody else, but I never put anybody on a pedestal, no matter who they are & no matter how much I may love their work. Photography creators today are becoming more like a cult, & just like any cult, if anyone speaks out against the cult, they will come at you, & alot of photographers with a big following have so much smoke blown up their asses, & they get way too defensive about anything because they have become so used to everybody sucking up to them.
I'd like to know all of your thoughts on this topic. Do you feel this is also becoming more apparent today? Personally, I feel that if you don't allow your followers to be brutally honest with you when they need to be, rather than just blow smoke up your ass the whole time in order to feed your ego, then you don't have a real close community.

Surely what holds crypto and public blockchains back right now are near zero barriers to creating garbage or outright scams, right? Until we can do something about that crypto will never see any form of mass adoption - so what do we do? What can we do?
Of the millions or billions websites on the Internet - how many are garbage or scams? Pick any random blog. What percent are going to be garbage or nonsense? In the 90s plenty of people thought it would be absurd for anyone to trust a website on the Internet for shopping. But all it really took was for some companies (ebay, Amazon, etc) to build a good reputation. Then you had services like PayPal being invented so even those merchants that may not have a good reputation yet could still be trusted. How many emails are scams or phishing attempts?
My parents were never interested in computers or using the Internet generally. But they did eventually when a website meant increased sales. When logging in to a website for work made more sense than having to call HR and have everything on paper. When email made more sense than faxing. Or when buying online meant you could purchase something cheaper because you didn't have the bricks and mortar overhead. The garbage and scams had not gone anywhere. They were all still there. But the positive benefits of using the internet, at a certain point, began to outweigh the risks.
These blockchains themselves may be trustless but the same cannot be said for what is built on top of them. However, sooner or later, different protocols will gain more respect and trust. We'll see more real world use cases for blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and how they can benefit people.
Imagine what it will mean for a small business when they can create and accept their own currencies. If I create JTokens and accept them for my business then the tokens will accrue the value of the goods and services bought and sold with them. So now not only will I make money from selling my services but I'll also be rewarded for my work as my JTokens increase in value proportional to my goods and services.
Now imagine then I just extend credit to myself. Not like a bank, but like a central bank. I have a certain amount of demand for my tokens because whenever I make a sale my JTokens are bought. So now I can increase the supply of my tokens a bit. Maybe I increase the supply by 5% and allocate it to myself, then I sell them in a LP so I can make a business purchase. Or a personal purchase for that matter.
And what if any person can do the same thing? They go to work and come time for payday your employer purchases the dollar amount of your paycheck in your own tokens and pays them to you? Any person for that matter then could create their own money based on the value of their labors.
I find it hard to imagine people would not want to have the ability to do this, short of just not wanting to learn or understand a new form of personal finance.
Short of something like this that may be pretty far out in the time horizon were already seeing plenty of good use cases that are moving that adoption needle.

And wouldn't it be nice if you could self custody your stocks and bonds instead of hoping your broker manages things properly and you wont have to rely on SIPC insurance if your broker should ever get itself into hot water. What kinds of savings can be realized for investors in traditional stocks, bonds, futures, and options if there is no exchange, brokers, and half a dozen financial intermediaries in the middle?
In fact stock investors would be able to generate more returns on their investments than simply holding their stocks. Imagine a Balancer pool that has the same pool distribution for stocks as the S&P 500 weightings? People could then deposit their tokenized stocks into the pool, get the same exposure to stocks they would by holding a SP500 index fund, and also earn fees from people swapping one stock for another. Would it really matter to investors that there also happens to be scams and garbage on blockchains?
At the end of the day though we do have to be patient and wait for this space to mature as more and more people decide that using cryptocurrencies and blockchains is beneficial to them. This space isn't there yet. Slowly step by step its heading that direction but it isn't there yet. That being said though it's heading there fast! In only 3 years Ethereum has gone from $250 million in ETH transferred on chain to today an average of about $4 billion in daily transfers. So in, arguably the middle of or end of a bear market, that's still a 16x growth increase in just 3 years. And that's just layer 1. What's the value of daily Eth transfers when you add up Arbitrum, Optimism, and all wrapped versions of it moving across other chains? This same logic can be applied to Bitcoin and other major cryptos too. I think in 2019 layer 1 numbers were the only ones to go by but now they're only a portion of what you need to look at to get the full picture.
So how do we stop the scams and garbage that proliferate on these networks? We do nothing. We wait and be patient. Unless of course you're a developer and want to get started on that crypto ratings DAO? And what do we do to onboard more people and make more adoption happen? Again, we do absolutely nothing and we don't even try to convince anyone that blockchains and cryptocurrencies are great. Of course if you're a developer than you do what you will be doing anyways: creating tokenized and blockchain solutions that will benefit people.
Right now is not the time for the masses to be adopting and using these systems. Because there just isn't anything there for them yet. We're still the geeks and nerds that were using different Internet protocols when it wasn't very practical yet, and the only thing on the Internet that most people could see was porn, scams, and viruses. You could show someone how to setup an email server, configure it, and send each other messages. But that other person would have been correct to scratch their heads and ask, " Why don't we just fax each other? You're the only person I know that uses email."

Harvard: He was a really cool former teacher who I think thought I was interesting. Our interview was a couple of hours and it was really great, BUT I didn't talk much about my ECs, really just talked about my goals and perspectives rather than my accomplishments
Princeton: He was a cool guy. We talked for a couple of hours. He seemed really, really impressed by my UN work and seemed to like me.
Yale: Cool guy. Seemed to really like me and talked about how he saw himself in me as a fellow POC. Talked for a couple of hours.
MIT: Cool guy. Really impressive. I think he thought I was great, just not a great applicant to MIT. Asked me a physics question which I got wrong. Talked for a couple of hours.
Georgetown: My interviewer was like hella impressive. Former lawyer. We connected well. He thought I would be great for GTown. Talked for a couple of hours.
Rice: Terrible. I didn't prepare and didn't have great answers. Interviewer was very STEM (I'm not) and didn't seem too interested in my activities. Cut off interview at 30 mins.
Penn: I thought it was really good lmao. I had a lot of fun and we went way over the schedule time and she thought I would be perfect lmao.
WashU (scholarship interview): Timed interview but I felt great. Interviewers were super sweet; laughed at my jokes and made me feel great :)
Brown (video interview): Low key kinda funny; did like a day in the life where I made pancakes for my brother and had a big interview
Berkeley (special program interview): I was not prepared and it was during school hours so I kinda joined 1-2 mins late. I also kinda just read out my application essay as a response for a couple of questions. They didn't seem impressed.
Emory (scholarship interview 1): I got cut off by the virtual timer each time, but I felt quite prepared I think and I think I had great responses
Emory (scholarship interview 2): Really great group interview; gave some great responses. I thought I was resourceful and the interviewers seemed to like me too :)
Emory (scholarship interview 3): Also a group interview; we created something really great and wonderful. Went out of my comfort zone but created something many thought was great. I also met with 2 of my interviewers before and after and both thought I was very articulate and thought I was insightful during the interview.
Essays
Common App Essay: (11/10) I honestly loved it lol. It was a conflict of "he" vs. "they" and I thought it was great and really showed who I was. It was also really fun and engaging to read and not too long. Everyone I spoke to LOVED it A LOT so I guess that has to mean something lol
Supps: I really liked a lot of mine and put a lot of time into them. Many of them were really funny or really deep and conveyed the duality of my personality. I will say tho, in the application process, I applied to a bunch of schools I wasn't a fan of, and, as a result, my sups were very rushed. How much I cared about the school and spent on the supp really reflected my admissions decision (except for 1)-- see parentheses below for info on this.

I know there's no real point in saying this, but lately, I've been replaying ME3MP with my friends, and I just can't shake the thought of how awesome it would have been to have a Citadel level. The normal map could have looked like the Cerberus Coupe, and I could have added a hazard map version designed with fires and smoke to add visibility hazards. My idea behind this was to provide some form of closure to what happened on the Citadel when the Reapers moved it to Earth. All those Citadel Strip DLC characters were seasoned warriors, so it's not like they wouldn't have fought for their lives.
Moreover, I also believe that an Omega and Leviathan map (the rainy boat one) would have been phenomenal. What are your thoughts?

Hey, so I’m gonna make this short and to the point as I can because I need answers and advice as soon as I can get it to figure out what my next step is, whether it’s changing doctors or doses or methods or what. I was on IM injections leveled out at 0.25mL weekly, but I’m not good with needles and kept pushing my doses back up to three days and anywhere in between, so I switched to gel about a month ago to try to fix the problem and get me to start taking my T on time.
Well, I’ve spotted before recently, maybe within the last three months or so, but I chalk that up mostly to missing my doses and pushing them back too often. Maybe. But for the last few weeks I’ve had frequent spotting, then for the last week consistent spotting, and today I started having period cramps and bleeding like it’s day one of my flow (which was regular and usually seven days long, very even and normal flow, before I started testosterone at 19. Info to show that my body usually did this before and this isn’t new, it’s just new NOW.)
The thing is, I haven’t had one of these fuckers since month one or two of taking T, even being in and out of range and messing up my doses by days the whole time. I’m forgetful and irresponsible with things I’m not looking forward to, and even though I can’t see myself living without being on testosterone, the needles have always made it really hard. Gel is amazing… if it was working. This makes me think that it might not be working. That being said, I’ve been taking two pumps, one rubbed into each arm, and I’m going to try using three pumps and see if that changes my body’s reaction to the gel.
Throughout this process I have been frantically and emotionally (my 21-year-old ass quietly sob-crying to the poor receptionists at my primary doctor and the OBGYN dept. about what I should do and if I’m going to die) calling my doctor, trying to get some input and/or advice, but she’s apparently booked out completely and utterly and the soonest she could see me would be months from now. The OBGYN is the same. Nobody seems to think this is a cause for concern, but I’ve learned not to trust medical professionals wholeheartedly multiple times and I sure as shit don’t trust my doctor, when the only answer I received was ‘do you want Nexplanon? If you want birth control make an appt. If you want to talk more make an appt.’ No discussion about my doses whatsoever or possible concerns. My cramps are getting worse to the point where I’m tearing up (lower stomach where I THINK they usually were, similar but possibly worse than before?? I can’t remember, memory issues/dissociation and time, but I think they’re a little more biting.)
So, fellow trans men, am I dying, could I be dying, if I’m not dying what MIGHT be wrong, why am I probably fine, should I try to find a new doctor in my small as shit down when this is the only only I’ve found who’s ever worked with any other trans men, should I just up the pumps of T-juice or should I go back to where I know I level out with injections?

Brux

You finally got your wish. Brux put you on the guest list to watch a filming of an upcoming action flick they’re doing stunts for. It’s a mind warp to see the typically homely, measured Brux done up like a sexy bank robber with professional hair and makeup. Maybe they’re a 6 in regular life, but they’re at least an 8 with a professional wardrobe and make-up team and perfect lighting. Rather than the typically slow and reserved mannerisms you’ve grown accustomed to, you witness a slick, confident swagger. Some of Brux’s moves are insane as they grapple against another actor portraying a police officer.
“Cut!” the director yells as Brux walks offset to talk through something with the choreographer.
“So you’re Brux’s friend?” one of the other actors asks as the crew begins resetting for another take.
“Yeah. Just here to watch them work.”
“Well, you picked the right stunt person. Brux is a beast when they get going. Isn’t it trippy how different they are in person? Did you meet them on a film or somewhere else?”
“Funny story, I met them on a blind date. We were having a picnic and all they could talk about is knitting and how they like soups and sandwiches and brush their teeth between every meal. So I thought they were the sleepiest person I’d ever met. But I gave them another chance and we went to Disneyworld and that’s when a little spice came out. For most of the day they just calmly tagged along and did whatever I wanted to do, but somehow they jimmied my wallet out of my pocket in this bizarre flex. They really are kind of a Pinocchio.”
“Pinocchio is a funny way of putting it. They’re gentle and reserved usually but on rare occasion you’ll see some fire inside. But that’s not common at all. I’ve known Brux for years now and I’ve only seen that side once or twice. But I still wouldn’t mess with them.”
“Oh I know. I accidentally pointed a knitting needle at them once and almost got a broken arm.”
“I can imagine!”
“But they really are a charmingly gentle person. Have you been to their apartment?”
“Yep. Lemme guess- chicken noodle soup and tea?”
“Haha you got it.”
“Yeah, Brux is a person of patterns. But you’ll be happy for that later. They just want a simple, calm life. They’re not hard to please and they’re a great friend. I’ve had some pretty rough times and if there’s one person who’s always there, it’s Brux. If you need someone’s shoulder to cry on, it’s Brux. If you need someone to trust with anything, it’s Brux. You’re a lucky one to have caught them.”
“Well, I haven’t quite caught them yet, but yeah, thanks.”
The director then claps his hands loudly several times. “Alright, reset! Prep for Take 4! And….Action!”
Once again Brux tussles against their counterpart in another stunning performance.

Blue

While at the mall, you decide to surprise Blue at Abercrombie & Fitch. You show up at 11am, when you expect them to arrive.
“Hey, is Blue here today?” you ask a tanned guy in tight, distressed jeans and nothing on top other than a bright red scarf.
“Nah. They should be. I’ll check the sched,” he says walking behind the checkout counter.
“Hmm, they should’ve been here by now. I dunno what’s up. Maybe their bike got a flat or something. That happens sometimes.”
“Biking to work is so Blue,” you say partly to the guy and partly to yourself.
“No doubt about it. You a friend? Sibling? Or a customer?”
“Let’s say ‘friend’.”
“Okay,” he shrugged. “Well, they’re not here yet.”
“While I’m waiting, can I ask you a random question?”
“Sure.”
“What’s the best and worst things about working with Blue?”
“Oh. Haha. Let’s see. The best things are that they’re always positive, full of life, and they really care about the customer. People will come in and Blue will spend all day if necessary to make sure they leave excited and feeling good about themselves. Always smiling, laughing, making other people laugh, and brightening everything up is a special quality. Hard things would be…they’re flighty. Blue absolutely cannot stick to anything longer than 5 minutes. One year they’re here, one year they’re there. One year they’re interested in this, one year they’re interested in that. I wouldn’t be shocked if they walked in tomorrow and quit. They have so much potential and so much to give, they just need to get the maturity and discipline to stick through stuff. It's something we've talked about. They're getting better and I know they're trying but I wish it would be faster. That wilderness stuff is the first time they've seemed to really settle down and focus. I hope it spreads to their whole life now.”
“Do you think they’d be a good parent?”
“100%- the best. I’ve seen…wait a second,” he said like a jock finally figuring out his first math problem. “What’s up with these questions. You’re not just a friend are you?”
“Well, I am, I…I’m just-“
“Nah nah nah. Don’t be coy. You’re not alone. Sometimes I wonder if half the store’s revenue comes from people like you- buying clothes as an excuse to get close to Cutie McCute with the perfect hair, smooth skin, and magazine abs. Makes me sick. But I guess I get it. I don’t swing that way, but if I did, maybe I’d be doing the same thing.”
“Well we’ve hung out a few time. But nothing crazy- just a picnic once and then Disneyworld, which was fun, and hiking once. But-“
Just then, the phone rings and he walks over to answer it.
“Abercrombie. This is Frank.”
He listens for a minute and then gasps. “What?! Are you okay? What hospital?? I’ll be right there!”
Frank then slams the phone down and rushes to get his jacket.
“Blue’s been hit by a car!” he yells to you. I’m headed there right now. Sorry, I gotta go.”
“Which hospital?” You ask as he power walks toward the door. Before he can answer, he leaps backward as Blue bounces through the entrance with wide ’ta-da’ arms.
“April fools!!!” Blue laughs uproariously as you and Frank leer.
“Not funny,” Frank says as he walks back toward the cash register to take his jacket off.
“Hey, it’s April 1st,” Blue shrugged. “You should have known. Anyway, sorry I’m late. The rain made traffic a mess.”
“Sure. Traffic,” Frank scoffs. “I know you’re probably late because you stopped and dropped a log on some poor old lady’s petunias.”
“Hey. A G’s gotta do what a G’ gotta do,” Blue says, dusting off their shoulder.
“You seriously didn’t do that again did you?” you ask.
“Relax. I’m just joking. But I did take a whiz. But don’t get all wound up, it wasn’t on someone’s petunias. Just be happy I'm staying hydrated.”
Frank, finally coming down from the stress of that ‘prank’, walks back over.
“That reminds me- there is one thing I also like about this character,” he says, wrapping his arm around Blue. “Truth. Blue is Blue. They put it all out there- the good, the bad, and the ugly. And as ugly as it can be, at least you always know who you’re dealing with. There’s something special about someone who just doesn’t hide anything.”

I work in a call centre that primarily deals with the public with issues or queries they have and whilst we can deal with a lot ourselves, there are a lot of things we must either log for another department to look into or transfer them across to that department. For example, if someone calls about a broken streetlamp, they get transferred across to the street lighting team, but if someone calls about a pothole, we have to log it for the highway team to fix it– some departments don’t have an internal number for the caller to get transferred across to/a number we can call to speak to that department, and one of those departments is the enforcement department.
Of all the systems and departments we use and liaise with, the trickiest one we deal with is the enforcement system. Basically, ranging from food safety to the environment, there were multiple teams that enforced things, and all these issues had to be logged on this system. For example, if someone called to report their neighbour for being too loud, that had to get logged on the system for the noise enforcement team to investigate, but we had to arrange for letters to be sent out about it. If someone reported an abandoned car, we logged it, and the environment enforcement team went out to investigate. If someone said they got food poisoning from a restaurant, we logged it and the food safety team investigated it and so on. The reason why it was so tricky was because if you missed a step, it didn’t get logged properly/it didn’t go to the correct team, which meant that someone would complain to your manager about it, and crucially, this was a legal system, which meant that if the issue escalated to court, whatever you wrote in your notes could be used in the court proceedings. This wasn’t a 2nd nature, eyes closed kind of system – you needed to be concentrating because something you log can bite you in the ass a month later, for example when someone calls to say that they haven’t received a letter and it turns out you didn’t send it in the first place
The way it worked was that a case was logged, which meant that it was open, and it got assigned to an officer like pulling a name out of a hat and throughout the time that it was open, if someone called back to give you more information about the case, you could update it, and that update went directly to the investigating officer, and then when the investigation had finished, the case was closed by that officer. Basically, once a case was assigned to an officer, they had to see it through from start to finish, whether it was deciding if a noise complaint was justified or going through black bags that were reported as flytipping to see if they could find anything that tied someone to that rubbish and so on. It wasn’t as simple as that though, because there were cases that had been open for years, with multiple updates, there were multiple cases that had been opened and closed between the same properties for the same reasons, or someone had called about something and you weren’t 100% sure if it should be logged or not etc. I’m not sure how my colleagues dealt with those situations, but whenever I got a call like that, I just emailed the investigating officer just to explain the situation and ask for advice, and CC’d in their colleagues just in case the investigating officer was off, or I just emailed the team to ask if they wanted me to log it as a new case or not, since if it was ongoing situation, with multiple cases for the same thing, many officers may have dealt with it, and they may not have wanted me to log it as new case.
I didn’t see an issue with it, because they either emailed me back with an answer, or they didn’t reply but logged it themselves after they’d looked into it, but one day I got a thorny email from a thornier senior environmental officer, basically telling me off and telling me not to send them emails anymore because the system was there to be used. I emailed him back, explaining that it wasn’t that simple because there were tricky cases that I needed help with, and I didn’t want to update an old case or log a case if I didn’t need to, to not unnecessarily add to the caseloads of the officers and he replied back reiterating that I shouldn’t send any more emails, and finished it off by telling me to either update the case whether it was open or closed, or open a new case – cue malicious compliance.
From that day forward, I did not send another email. If I got a call about an issue, and the last time the issue was raised in 2017, I updated the 2017 case. If I was on the fence about logging something as a new case or not, I just logged it anyway. If I checked the last case, and the investigating officer had left, I updated it anyway. I was unaware of this, but when I told people that the investigating officer would call them back, like they typically did after we asked them to in our updates, they would call us a couple of weeks later to ask why they hadn’t received a call, and my colleagues would have to raise a new case for them because the one I updated was closed. The officers also suddenly had an influx of new cases, because every time I updated a closed case, it ‘reopened’, which added to their case load. The system they used worked on dates and caseloads, for example, if I asked them to call someone or inspect a property in my update, the system generated a time frame for them to complete that action by, but if they were too busy do something I’d asked them to do, it went red, which counted against them. Also, for example, if they had 4 open cases, and then they closed 3 and they’d gone down to 1, they’d go back up to 4 again if I updated 3 of their old cases, so based on the system, they were not doing their jobs properly because they constantly had open cases. This put their stats through the floor.
This went on for ages, and one day I was hauled into an office by my manager, and waiting for me was his manager, the senior enforcement officer, his manager, a HR advisor for me and HR. They told me that I was doing call avoidance (gross misconduct), purposefully misadvising callers and not triaging calls correctly. From what they were saying and the paperwork they had with them, I knew it was a ‘you’re fired’ meeting. HR asked me if there was anything I wanted to say, so I looked at the enforcement manager, pointed at the senior enforcement officer and said, “he told me to do it.” The enforcement manager looked at me, looked at the senior enforcement manager, looked at me again and then asked me to clarify what I meant. I explained it all from start to finish, making it clear that when I was sending emails, I always asked for advice and offered to log a case for the enforcement team if they wanted me to, and that before the email from the senior enforcement officer, my emails either were not replied to, but someone logged it for me, or someone replied to me to tell me to log a new case or to not log a new case
The enforcement manager sighed and then asked me if I could send him that email, so I quickly left, went back to my desk, sent the email thread to him and came back into the office. He read the email, sighed deeper than he did before and then asked us all to leave but asked the senior enforcement officer to stay, and I left with a massive shit eating grin on my face because I knew that I would keep my job. The fallout was pretty big, because the IT team had to go in and manually close all the ‘open’ cases so that the stats for the enforcement officers would go back to normal, the payroll department had to backdate all the months that the stats were messed up so that the performance bonus matched what would have happened had I not put their stats down (I didn’t know they had performance bonuses until afterwards) and the senior enforcement officer got demoted to an enforcement officer, based on their new email signature
A couple of weeks later, when the enforcement manager was less busy, he emailed me to basically say that he gives me permission to go back to emailing the enforcement team about cases, but I should use my own judgement – if I think I could justifiably get away with not logging something on the system, as in I could explain to my manager why I didn’t think it should have been logged, then I shouldn’t log it, and that logic would cut down the amount of emails I had to send to the enforcement teams - No one got fired, but someone got demoted and a lot of work happened in the background to fix what I did
