I know, not exactly a beautiful map, it's mainly a sketch before I make a better one with the complete scenario.
Summary of changes so far:
  • Hungary won the 1849 War of Independence with Russian help. Konstantin I Romanov is now King of Hungary. Lajos Kossuth is prime minister.
  • Russia conquered Galicia.
  • The Roman Republic survived. Garibaldi is now a general for them instead of Piedmont.
  • Early Austro-Prussian War in 1850-1851 (escalating Autumn Crisis), with Prussian victory. North German Confederation formed in 1851-52.
  • Crimean War starts mostly the same as in OTL.
Thoughts for the Crimean War:
  • The Concert of Europe is dead.
  • German states (especially Austria) concerned with Russian hegemony. Austria wants to regain its former lands.
  • France fearing German unity, outweighing concerns over Russian expansion. (Following a successful 1854 Spanish revolution, the question of Spanish succession could spark a war between France and Germany just like in OTL.)
  • Italian states so far cooperative, a conflict over who should unite Italy could unfold after the Crimean War.
  • Hungary not enthusiastic over risking newly-earned independence, goes to war under Russian pressure. Orthodox minorities, especially Romanians and Serbians hoping for Russian success.
However, I don't know how this war would play out. Numbers seem to favour Russia's side, while Germany's side is more technologically advanced. I would appreciate some input.

2023.06.10 14:25 DJBenson 480w DIY array underperforming?

I installed a small DIY array on my garden sheds consisting of 4 Ecoworthy 120w monocrystalline panels, a 4 way combiner and a 1000w Iconica inverter linked with 4 130ah leisure batteries.
The problem I’m seeing having had it installed for about six months (starting autumn to now) is that it appears to be underperforming. The input on the inverter shows 3-4 amps whether it’s blistering sun or slightly overcast. Today in North West England it’s clear skies and very sunny. The panels are oriented SW and I’ve just angled the brackets to their lowest setting so they practically pointing directly towards the sky/sun.
I’m looking for inspiration as to where the problem might be. I have a multi meter and can perform per panel tests but any ideas on where to start.
Due to the combiner box the panels are wired in four separate strings to the combiner with a single output to the inverter. They are arranged (physically) in two pairs of two panels so I could wire each pair in series then the two pairs on parallel if that would make a difference.
I’d also like to know realistically what these panels should be capable of given ideal conditions.

2023.06.09 18:56 avoidtheoutside902 Soil contamination test

Hello all,
I currently live in a 1960's bungalow in North Dartmouth. I've only lived in my house for about a year so I really don't know its history in great detail. I've planted some veggies in a bed behind my house and it occurred to me that there could be possible contaminants in the soil (I've mixed the existing soil with compost and store bought gardening soil) perhaps from old paint etc.
I've contacted the provincial office for soil testing in Truro but they only do pH and nutrient testing. I've also contacted Halifax Seed and Veritas lab, neither of which had a viable solution. I'm still waiting to hear back from AGAT and the Dalhousie Agricultural campus so that could be something.
But has anyone had any experience getting their soil tested for contaminants/ dealt with contaminants (especially in an urban/suburban location)? Any advice is appreciated!

2023.06.09 16:05 tuanzipapa Guan Cang Hai,a poem created by Cao Cao in the year of 207

Guan Cang Hai,a poem created by Cao Cao in the year of 207
"Guan Cang Hai" is a four-line poem written by the poet Cao Cao during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. It depicts the magnificent scenery of the sea as Cao Cao observed it while climbing the Jieshi Mountain. The poem portrays the sea's grandeur, swallowing the sun and moon and containing countless wonders. It also portrays the majestic beauty of the mountains and rivers of the motherland and expresses the poet's ambitious and optimistic spirit. The language of the poem is simple yet imaginative, creating a solemn and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
TV Series: The Romance of three kingdoms ,China,1994

Here is the Poem:
Guan Cang Hai (View the ocean, created by Cao Cao in the year of 207.Translated by Xu Yuanchong, famous translator and Peking University professor)
东临碣石,以观沧海。
I come to view the boundless ocean from Stony Hill on eastern shore.
水何澹澹,山岛竦峙。
Its water rolls in rhythmic motion, and islands stand amid its roar.
树木丛生,百草丰茂。
Tree on tree grows from peak to peak, grass on grass looks lush far and nigh.
秋风萧瑟,洪波涌起。
The autumn wind blows drear and bleak, the monstrous billows surge up high.
日月之行,若出其中。
The sun by day,the moon by night appear to rise up from the deep.
星汉灿烂,若出其里。
The Milky Way with stars so bright sinks down into the sea in sleep.
幸甚至哉,歌以咏志。
How happy I feel at this sight,I croon this poem in delight.

Background of the Creation:
At that time, the Wuhuan tribe posed a major threat in the northeast region. In the 11th year of the Jian'an era (206 AD), the Wuhuan tribe captured Youzhou and took over more than a hundred thousand households of Han Chinese as captives. In the same year, Yuan Shao's sons, Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi, colluded with the leader of the Wuhuan tribe in Liaoxi, Tadun, and repeatedly harassed the border. As a result, Cao Cao had no choice but to decisively march north to conquer the Wuhuan tribe in the 12th year of Jian'an (207 AD). Later, with the guidance of Tian Chou, he employed clever strategies. It was during a major battle in August of that year when Cao Cao finally achieved a decisive victory. This victory consolidated Cao Cao's rear, laying the foundation for his southward campaign the following year, in pursuit of his ambition to unify China. "Guan Cang Hai" was written by Cao Cao when he returned victorious after the northern expedition against the Wuhuan tribe, passing through Jieshi Mountain.

2023.06.09 13:32 wardXn 35 day solo itinerary check across western Honshu, Shikoku, Osaka/Kyoto, Kanazawa and Tokyo

Hello, I would like to seek fellow redditors opinions, input and recommendation on how I could better finetune my itinerary better. There's only so much I can think of, and plan as an individual, but with everyone's input and comments I can further refine and enhance the travel experience before I set foot into Japan. Do forgive me in advance for the theorycrafting wall of text.
I know it may be difficult to review the itinerary, so to make the review easier I have broken the itinerary down into specific sub-groups e.g. Shikoku, Kinki etc. Specific questions that I have are bolded.
Thank you in advance for taking your time to provide your opinions!
-------------
Baseline information

Specific goals/objective:
  1. Experience Shikoku in autumn (specifically the views at Iya Valley) and in other prefectures (thus making nature sightseeing more of a priority this time round)
  2. Experience Kanazawa for anime stuff
  3. Experience the Shimanami Kaido in full (including any sightseeing spots in between the 6 island chains)
  4. Bonus - try as many sightseeing trains as possible.
  5. Bonus - if weather, time and schedule permits, try skiing as an option in Nagano.
  6. Bonus - stay in as many onsen ryokans as possible, without breaking the bank.

Locked-in prefectures [i.e. I will definitely go to those prefectures no matter what]:
  1. Shikoku (as per above objective)
  2. Hiroshima (because its on the opposite end of the Shimanami Kaido)
  3. Kanazawa (for anime related reason)
  4. Tokyo (that is my starting and end point so it has to be included by default)
All other prefectures are basically float i.e. I am open to consider dropping said itinerary for something else based on your suggestion that aligns with my preferences/interest. Most of the other locations I added are prefectures that are often next to each other, or well-connected (apart from the initial Tokyo Kagawa jump via Sunrise Seto/Shinkansen).

Wait-list prefectures (prefectures that I want to go, but I don’t think I can realistically fit in without dropping other locations):
  1. Snow skiing at Nagano (depending on how cooperative the weather is in early-ish December (would 2 days be sufficient?))
  2. Ehime, Kochi expansion [spend 1-3 more days]
  3. Izu Peninsula (~2 days, via Saphir Odoriko)
  4. Nagoya + lower Nagano (Kiso Valley) (~3 days)
  5. Ishikawa expansion [1 extra day at Kaga]
I am open to dropping a few days in Tokyo/Osaka etc to make that trade off [currently kept 3 days free for further development]. Alternatively, if the planning can be better optimized based on your inputs I might be able to do one of those without compromising on the base set. I would like to hear your opinion on what locations you would drop in the itinerary to make time for one of the above.

General planning philosophy:
  1. My itineary adopts a breadth approach (cover as much area as I can humanely possible without rushing/touch-and-go) as opposed to depth (i.e. spending much more time within Shikoku than what I allocated); though I would be open to considering more days at selected locations if you have strong recommendations. My thought is to experience how different autumn is at various parts of the country (if possible), and maybe winter too (to a certain degree).
  2. Due to the nature of my travel, I note that luggage logistics is a critical consideration when moving between prefectures; my thought is to park that luggage at the next hotel as quickly as possible so that I can free myself for sightseeing within the vicinity, or leave the luggage at the hotel after I check out until I am ready to travel to the next location. I will need to send (quite a fair bit of) emails to the hotels to confirm on this prior to booking.
  3. I will attempt to minimize transit time between prefectures to no more than 2~3 hours a day to avoid having excessively long transport days (except the initial Tokyo Kagawa jump).
  4. Because of the long trip, I will also need to factor a bit of downtime at night for administrative stuff (e.g. catching up a little bit on work, laundry etc).
---------
Shikoku (~7 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. I will need to exploit Limited Express trains as much as possible to minimize downtime between the 4 prefectures. Fortunately, for the most part these train frequencies are almost hourly, thus missing one train isnt too deadly consequence-wise.
  2. The transfer between Kochi and Ehime [Matsuyama] is oddly quicker via express bus as opposed to trains (!)
  3. For Kochi, my opinion is that it is best explored on car instead of public transport [it’s a really wide prefecture]; I feel that 1 day may not do it justice, but it is probably adequate for exploring the city centre as a whole.
  4. There's a fair bit of uncertainties while planning this leg so I would deeply appreciate any advice you may have.
  5. This current iteration is unable to weave in the Shikoku Mannaka Sennen Monogatari sightseeing train [四国まんなか千年ものがたり] ; if you people think its something not to be missed do let me know and I will reshuffle my timetable as such.
Day 0: Tokyo Kagawa (Sunrise Seto) [Saturday, 11 Nov]
Day 1: Kagawa (Takamatsu) [Sunday, 12 Nov]
Day 2: Kagawa (Kotohira) Tokushima (Iya Valley) [Monday, 13 Nov]

Day 3: Tokushima (Iya Valley) [Tuesday, 14 Nov]
[Post-research note: I realized that there is NO public transport to Mount Tsurugi on a weekday. I will have to rent a taxi direct to Mount Tsurugi, make the 'climb', then thereafter take the taxi down to the other attractions. I am inclined to just go full hog on the private taxi and rent it (almost the whole day, probably 7~8 hours for 4300yen/hour) to save the trouble.
Otherwise, I will need to hike downhill which can be rather rough since its just a single lane road (looking at nearly 10++ km) so I think it wise not to penny pinch in the interest of both time and safety.]
Spend the day at Iya Valley.

Day 4: Tokushima (Iya Valley) Kochi (Kochi) [Wednesday, 15 Nov]

Day 5: Kochi (Kochi) Ehime (Imabari) [Thursday, 16 Nov]

Day 6: Ehime (Matsuyama / Imabari) [Friday, 17 Nov]
Day 7: Ehime (Imabari) Hiroshima (Shinamani Kaido) [Saturday, 18 Nov]
I am of the opinion that 1 day in Shimanami Kaido is adequate if I attempt just the main route which is about 80km [as a test run, I did 70km and finished it within 6-7 hours with lunch breaks included]. For now I will plan for two full days, however should I truncate it down to one day later, I will add an extra day to either explore Matsuyama or Okayama.

--------
Hiroshima + Yamaguchi (~4 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. Onomichi is a pretty good base to jump to Okayama to explore Okayama, Kurashiki or Tomonoura with the Shinkansen accessibility, but it is impossible to cover them all within a single day. If I finish the Shimanami Kaido within a single day or finish it early on the second day, I will have that extra time to visit those.
  2. There's another sightseeing train etSETOra from Onomichi to Hiroshima but it only operates on Monday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday. For now the schedule could fit the train timetable pretty nicely.
  3. Would anyone suggest visiting Miyajima in the morning or in the evening? This would help me determine the order for the Kintaikyo Bridge/Miyajima day trip. Watching the sunset at either destination is pretty good in my books.

Day 8: Hiroshima (Shinamani Kaido Onomichi) [Sunday, 19 Nov]
Ideally reach Onomichi just around lunch or earlier. Chill for the rest of the day, and if I'm still up for it, explore Onomichi, including but not limited to:
Retire at a guesthouse/hotel near JR Onomichi that I have forwarded the luggage to.

Day 9: Hiroshima (Onomichi, Takehara+Kure OR Tomonoura OR Okayama) Downtown Hiroshima) [Monday, 20 Nov]

Day 10: Hiroshima (Downtown Hiroshima) [Tuesday, 21 Nov]
Spend the day surveying Hiroshima proper.

Day 11: Hiroshima (with a day trip to Yamaguchi) [Wednesday, 22 Nov]
--------
Shimane + Tottori (4 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. Matsue becomes the main jump point for Shimane just because of the subsidized highway bus from Hiroshima, and ease of access towards Tottori later. There's no direct train between Hiroshima and Izumo/Matsue (!).
  2. Tottori is really wide size-wise, to the point that it feels more efficient to have two separate hotels in two nights (Kurayoshi/Misasa Onsen + downtown Tottori) rather than one hotel for two nights (i.e. downtown Tottori). Could be just me making excuses to get into an onsen ryokan however.
  3. Is there anything interesting at Yonago (Tottori) that I should take note of? Based on my initial survey nothing in particular pops up (other than the Tottori Prefectural Flower Park).
  4. Skipping Tottori Castle since it doesn’t seem to be interesting at first glance. Any other interesting things to at Tottori downtown (or nearby)?

Day 12: Hiroshima Shimane (Matsue) [Thursday, 23 Nov]

Day 13: Shimane (Izumo / Matsue) [Friday, 24 Nov]

Day 14: Shimane (Matsue) Tottori (Kurayoshi) [Saturday, 25 Nov]

Day 15: Tottori (Kurayoshi Tottori) [Sunday, 26 Nov]

-----------
Hyogo, Kyoto, Osaka , Nara, Mie (10 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. Kinosaki Onsen is intentionally designed to be a slow-paced leg to recover [and also to make time to enjoy the onsens].
  2. The limited express train between Kinosaki Onsen and Osaka stops by Himeji thus I thought of resting a night there instead of doing day trips via Osaka.
  3. Osaka itinerary does look sparse but that is in large part because I have already visited most of them in the past. Nevertheless, I would like to experience how different it is in autumn compared to summer [based on those few destinations that I loved going previously].
  4. I have kept one float day to decompress, OR shift to any of the other prefectures (TBC).
  5. There are (multiple) special limited express train by Kintetsu; they're not covered by JR pass but nevertheless I would love to ride on those as an experience. The Kintetsu pass covers the basic fare only but based on my preliminary cost estimate, it is still worth getting it.
  6. Is it feasible to compress Himeji and Kobe to a single day?
  7. The itineraries for Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Mie are flexible since they're literally beside one another - makes it particularly easy to shift around base on ground situation.

Day 16: Tottori (Tottori) Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen) [Monday, 27 Nov]

Day 17: Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen + Northern Kyoto (Amanohashidate) day trip) [Tuesday, 28 Nov]
Day 18: Hyogo (Kinosaki Onsen Himeji) [Wednesday, 29 Nov]
Retire at Himeji for the night.
Day 19: Hyogo (Himeji Kobe) Osaka (Dotonburi) [Thursday, 30 Nov]
Day trip to Kobe, before continuing further down to Osaka.
Day 20: Osaka [Friday, 1 Dec]
Osaka Nostalgia (acid) trip, speedrun edition: revisiting places that I want to go again
Day 21: Osaka (Nara day trip) [Saturday, 2 Dec]
Spend a day in Nara.
Day 22: Osaka (Mie day trip) [Sunday, 3 Dec]
Day trip to Mie.
Day 23: Osaka ('north' Kyoto day trip) [Monday, 4 Dec]
(north) Kyoto day trip.
Whichever choice, return back to Osaka for the night. Look out for Kyoto-specific food such as Yudofu, Saba Sushi, Warabi Mochi, Nishin Soba (にしんそば) etc.
Day 24: Osaka ('south' Kyoto day trip) [Tuesday, 5 Dec]
(south) Kyoto day trip edition (mainly Uji and Fushimi).
Head back to Osaka and retire for the night. Consider doing any other night activities in Osaka if time, and body permits.
Day 25: Osaka (wildcard) [Wednesday, 6 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture. Intentionally left blank for later planning
-------------
Kanazawa, Gifu+ (4 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. Is it likely for the skiing season to open around 9~10 December at Shiga Kogen or Nozawa Onsen? Would very much like to try skiing for fun, but am uncertain if the snow condition would be satisfactory by then. Some of the skiing website indicates that these two destinations are usually the first to open. I would like to seek advise on this if possible [never skiied before].
  2. As an additional question to point 1, is 2 days adequate just to get a flavor on skiing?
  3. Kanazawa is a pretty solid jump point to Shirakawago/Takayama via express buses (~1 to 2 hour one way).
  4. My initial planning considered going to Kurobe Gorge (Toyama) but apparently the railways are closed from December onwards. Please correct me if I am mistaken.
  5. Another sightseeing train in Kanazawa that I can fit in nicely in my current plans (花嫁のれん), runs on Mon/Fri/Sat/Sun.
Day 26: Osaka Ishikawa (Kanazawa (Kanazawa cityside)) [Thursday, 7 Dec]
Any outstanding spots not completed today, to be rolled over to the next 2 days (if possible).

Day 27: Ishikawa (Kanazawa cityside) / Gifu (Shirakawago, Takayama) [Friday, 8 Dec]

Day 28: Ishikawa (Kanazawa cityside / outskirts) [Saturday, 9 Dec]
Side trip to Wakura Onsen / Nanao for anime-related sightseeing. (Insomanics after Class, Hanasaku Iroha)
Day 29: Ishikawa (wildcard) [Sunday, 10 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture. Intentionally left blank for later planning
--------------
Tokyo (~6 days)
Specific thoughts while planning:
  1. Specific interest to target: anime/vtuber stuff, music (piano in particular), bookstores etc.
  2. This is the point in time I should go ham on souvenier purchase if I have not done so. I'll probably get an extra cardboard box or duffel bag to lug with me to the airport to store extra stuff.
  3. Would like to seek recommendation on where I should set my base for the 5~6 days here. For now I am planning to pit at Ginza, subject to availability and cost. My thought is that as long as its along the Yamanote line everything rolls I suppose.
  4. Hard pass on Golden Gai on the Shunjuku leg (I do not drink).
  5. There's way too many to list in terms of what I would like to do in Tokyo, but I have listed items that are of particular interest to me first within the available time frame. If you have strong opinions on specific locations do let me know.
Day 30: Ishikawa (Kanazawa) Tokyo (Ginza) [Monday, 11 Dec]
Day 31: Tokyo (Shibuya, Shinjuku and Nakano) [Tuesday, 12 Dec]
Explore ('west') Tokyo, namely Shibuya, Shinjuku and Nakano.
Day 32: Tokyo (Akibahara, Asakusa and Sky Tree) [Wednesday, 13 Dec]
Day 33: Tokyo (Kamakura day trip OR Ikebukuro) [Thursday, 14 Dec]
EITHER take a day trip Kamakura, OR explore northern Tokyo (Ikebukuro)
Kamakura leg:
Tokyo (Ikebukuro leg):
Day 34: Tokyo (wildcard) [Friday, 15 Dec]
Spare day to do whatever I feel like doing OR reallocate this to another prefecture. Intentionally left blank for later planning

Day 35: Tokyo Home [Saturday, 16 Dec]
END
---------------------
If you're still reading up to this point, here's my own personal ramblings/thoughts on JR pass usage:
I have thought of two ways of doing this for the first 21 days:
a. easy-mode : just get 21 days JR global pass before the price hike at 60450 yen, OR b. hard-mode: get a 7 day JR global pass (to cover the NEX fees, the basic fee on the Sunrise Seto to Shikoku, as well as limited express trains within Shikoku) (29650) + 5 days for JR Okayama Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass (15000) + 4 days for JR Sanin Okayama Area Pass + 5 days for JR Kansai Wide Area Pass (10000) for a total of 59230.
The initial conclusion was to go with option A since that reduces the administrative burden, but I realized the individual passes do have its own perk which truimphs over the global JR pass. For instance, the Sanin Okayama Area Pass provides a (minor) discount for the Adachi Museum of Art; the Kansai Wide Pass covers the Kyotango route between Kinosaki Onsen and Amanohashidate which the global JR pass does not cover, JR Okayama Hiroshima Yamaguchi Area Pass covers JR buses within Hiroshima for free, therefore I am inclined to go with the hell option (option B) as it stands.
For the remaining 14 days, I could also get the global 14 day JR pass at 47250 yen but it is not worth it at all, because I will be relying largely on Kintetsu for the Osaka/Kyoto/Nara/Mie leg which the JR pass most certainly does not cover.
So all in all, there's quite little incentive to get the global JR pass after I worked out my schedule, apart from the initial 7 days for the Sunrise Seto jump which the All Shikoku Pass will not cover.
Through the hodge-podge of multiple area passes, it works out to around 102890 yen for the whole trip of 35 days, contrast with 107700 yen for a 21 + 14 global JR pass. While there's a minor cost saving doing the hard way which sweetens the deal, the additional minor perks associated with the area passes sells it for me, as I would had to pay more out of pocket to cover non-JR pass buses/rails and such which would add up to much greater cost than I would had anticipated. Also, if I did this trip post-price hike in October, the calculus becomes a no-brainer: avoid the global JR pass like the plague.

2023.06.09 03:09 danderson24 List of Current GCC Churches.

Even though Great Commission Churches officially dissolved in 2020, many of their churches are still active with the same leadership, same problematic teaching, and same toxic culture. We have been able to gather a list of them and they will be labelled by splinter group. If we have forgot to add a church or need to update information about a church (whether they are still active or inactive or if they have changed their affiliation), please let us know ASAP. Also, PLEASE NOTE, we are sharing the names and websites of these churches to warn others, NOT to harass the church members already involved. We will NOT support any calls for violence or calls to harass anyone involved with these churches. Any such calls will be met with an immediate ban.
Without further ado, here is the current list:

2023.06.09 01:20 LateHighway3937 Top 20 schools based by the amount of Baddies

Alright so I think this is the ranking that everyone should care about. I’ve lived all across the West Coast, grew up in the Midwest, did undergrad in the Northeast and lived in Virginia and Texas as well so I think I have a good understanding of where the baddies are at…
1.) USC-easy decision. Both have access to LA chicks but USC undergrads are hotter by a mile than UCLA
2.)UCLA-see reason above
3.)Berkeley-San Francisco has the second highest percentage of baddies on the west coast. Their undergrads are hotter than Stanford as well
4.)Stanford- Easy decision for #4 on the list
5.)NYU- #5-8 was a tough choice. I was debating whether to go with Chicago or NYC next but after checking the data… NYC barely squeaks it out and NYU has hotter baddies that Columbia
6.)Columbia- same as above
7.) UChicago- Better location than Northwestern
8.) Northwestern-no comment
9.) UT-I lived in Austin for a bit and the UT girls along with all of bad-20 something year olds squeak them into the top-10
10)Harvard-Boston itself is an aight city. I think it’s slightly overrated as far as chicks go. But it’s a solid choice.
11)MIT-same as above
12)UPenn-debated ranking them higher due to its proximity to NYC and D.C. (which is a top 5 city for baddies in my experience). But I decided that would be unfair so Philadelphia is kinda meh but their are still plenty of great options.
13)Emory-I’ve only been to Atlanta three times so with the limited experience, I had to drop them down to last out of the major cities
14)UMich-now we’re down to the non-major cities. Ann Arbor itself is a popping city. But the UMich babes are probably second only to USC on this list. Obviously you don’t have the numbers that the big cities have but for undergrad baddies, this is debatably the best school!
15)CMU-Carnegie Mellon itself sucks and Pittsburgh is kinda a meh city and I’ve only been there once. But I knew a few UPitt chicks and they were hot so I think 15 is a fair ranking.
16)UVA-Charlottesville isn’t a bad location. I dated a UVA chick years ago and I wouldn’t say she was a baddie (probably like a 6.5) but I’ve been on the campus and it’s alright.
17)Duke-kinda the same reason as above. I know a few duke grads and none of the chicks were that hot and North Caroline itself is kinda meh for me.
18)Cornell-The last three schools I have limited data to go by. I dated a Cornell grad when I lived in NYC and she was a babe (8.5 or so) but based off a couple of friends I met and Ithaca isn’t really in popping city, I had to drop them to 18.
19)Yale-I went to a party at Yale years ago and it was fun but their were definitely no baddies there. That’s the only time I’ve been to New Haven so yeah they’re just edging out 2nd to last.
20)Dartmouth-New Hampshire is one of the few states I haven’t been to so by default, I had to put them last.
I think this list is pretty solid but if anyone has any suggested improvements. I’m all for hearing them. Hope this helps. Everyone out.

2023.06.08 22:12 IrreliventPerogi Deadhouse Gates - A First-Time Reader's Initial Experience, Thoughts, and Observations

Deadhouse Gates

This is it! The infamous make-or-break point for so many readers of the series, GotM was fun, but the REAL Book of the Fallen starts here! So they say, and so I'm here to find out and report so to you all! Thus far, I feel the series is already "made" but let's see where it goes. Interestingly, we've only got four books this time, while maintaining the 24-chapter structure, so that'll be interesting. But enough preamble, let the ignorant rambling on context-less supplemental content commence!

Maps

So, we've got double the map content this time around, with three double-page maps depicting a large portion of the Seven Cities Continent, at roughly the same time as GotM's map.
The first is that broad overview. Interestingly, we don't have a map key this time around, so the territories are unmarked. That somewhat tracks, as my understanding of the timeline has 7C mostly or completely conquered by this time, although on the knife's edge of rebellion by the end of GotM. IDK if I love the addition of waves to the bodies of water, although that might have been because of the much more intermixed water-land-water-land nature of the land mass. Disambiguation and all that. It does add quite a bit of visual clutter though.
What jumps out right away is the inclusion of the "Otataral Desert" and the "Otataral Sea." We knew 7C was where the bulk of the Otataral came from, but now we've got a rough region for that.* On another note, Y'ghatan is absent from the map. While that again makes sense, considering it got nuked off the face of the continent, and Laseen's Malazan isn't likely to commemorate either military embarrassments or the past it would be interesting to know where that was once located. Either way, lots of cool sounding and cool-looking places on here. Also, I'll note that this landmass seems to be north of Quon Tali, just to get a sense of geography.
*As an aside, given what we know about Otataral exposure, I'd love to know the effects it has on the miners.
Next up is a pair of double-spread maps on Cotaline's Chain of Dogs march. Similar to Anomander Rake, whatever that sequence entails, even in the spoiler-free, noob intros, and fan recruitment content out there, the Chain of Dogs is one of those things that is inevitably namedropped, so I'm hyped to see that here. It seems to be one long march from some place called Hissar down to a Holy City named Aren. There seem to be no less than eight battles along the way, as well as a series of minor engagements, something called The Dry March, and a whole bunch of surrounding hostiles. So yea, sounds like we're in for a brutal time. Also of note on these two maps are what seem to be a series of... mounds? All named, with what look like caravan trails all named as well interconnecting them. Local settlements, perhaps? Are these tels)? The general aesthetic of the setting just seems suggestive of such, and with Erikson as an archeologist...
Anyway, I'll let those settle in my mind and move on. On the whole, I probably prefer GotM's Genebakis map to the Seven Cities map here, but I love the Chain of Dogs maps and am excited to use those to follow along.

Dramatis Personae

Not spoilers cuz it's listed first! Also, this tells us nothing about how involved anyone is, just that they'll show up. Also, given how conservative GotM's DP was, I't'll be fine. We've got Icarium and Mappo, two of the guys mentioned in the tail end of GotM, so I'm excited to learn more about them as well as a High Preist of Shadow. Possibly Ben's replacement? We've also got a Souletaken and a couple of D'ivers (which GotM's Glossary mentioned as another type of shapeshifter but IDR if they ever came up there) all of these are connected with something called the Path of Hands.
Among the Malazans we have our prologue trio, as well as the quartet who left Darujhistan for Quon Tali, interesting that they're passing through here. I don't notice anyone else from Malazan who I'd recognize, aside from Topper. Tavore, despite her new role, is conspicuously absent. Or I'm just blind and missed her. We got some more interesting group names, like Wiccans (among whom is listed Coltaine, despite their being the Fist of the 7th) The Red Blades, and the Followers of the Apocalypse. It also seems like House Shadow is making another appearance. One last note, Moby is not listed with our Darujhistan crew, but that may just be a technicality.
A pair of someones named Irp and Rudd are listed as "a small servant" and "an equally small servant" so there's either a joke or a major revelation there, probably both.

Prologue

Oh yea, we've stepped up the game in the prose department. Exquisite, and also horrifying. A look into the events in the capital during the months after the events of GotM. Things... don't look great.

Epigraph

As an aside, the format changed for the epigraphs to where the Chapter number and epigraphs are listed immediately before the text. Probably for the best, but that might limit the length of future epigraphs. Not good or bad, just a thing.
Another excerpt from The Bridgeburners by Toc the Younger. I'd forgotten to mention this during my GotM finale, but unless Toc has already written this, there are some shenanigans going on with his "death."
Something looms big on the horizon, that's... really all I can get out of this. The reference to "the horizon's bruised smear" seems to indicate a storm, but as to what's in the storm, or what this has to do with the Bridgeburners outside of the Paran connection, I'm not sure. Perhaps that is it, Ganoes' actions have had massive consequences for many others.

The Prologue Itself

Takes place the same year as GotM, ominously listed as the Year of the Cull. A figure covered in flies stumbles into Judgement's Round in Unta. As is tradition, the Season of Rot's ending is celebrated by the priests of Hood coating themselves in the fermented blood of executed murderers and attracting the many files brought on by death.* I'd initially thought we'd time jumped ahead to when autumn passes into winter, given R'rek's whole motif, but the assertion that this has only happened three times in the last decade, and that's a record, means that this is likely something else. Either supernatural or just a measure of the passage of plagues. Either way, just another crack in the foundation of the Empire.
*For some reason, my brain substituted blood for feces on the initial readthrough so... the Death cult could always be worse, right? Also, blood fits better with the whole Thirsting Hour name, lol.
This is all observed through the eyes of Felesin Paran, sister to Ganoes and author (to be?) of A Call to Shadow. She is in chains, surrounded by death, and lined up for slavery if an execution by mob does not kill her first. She watches with horror as the priest stumbles in her direction, dancing the tens of thousands of eyes to be fixed on her. In truth, they are fixated on the former priest of Fenner to her left. The two trade snark as the priest continues to stumble towards Heboric. It is then that Felesin recognizes the boar tattoos all over the man, marking him as among the priesthood of Fenner. She also notices that both of his hands have been cut off. The ex-priest mocks the figure before the flies themselves respond. There is a secret to be shared by them. To the horror of all present, the flies scatter, and the priest underneath... is nonexistent. Hood is evidently borrowing tactics from popular superhero web serials written in 2011. What the secret revealed actually means, none (myself included) can yet guess.
Reflecting on the Cull, Felisin bemoans her changing station in life and all the implications that such a thing has happened now. For us in the audience, it reveals just how desperate the Empress is growing. Culling the nobility is the Empire's MO to recruit soldiers for their war engine, as well as general appeasement and power brokering. That they need to do so once again in the interior, all across the Empire's heartland, betrays just how much the Empress has lost between Genebakis and Seven Cities.. Someone calls Felesion for help, a Lady of another noble family who recognizes her. She baggs Felesin to reason with her sister, calling her out by name as a Paran, offering riches to spare the woman's life. The Thug to Fellesin's left (or right? she must have turned around at some point) quiets the woman by noting that all who could pay the girl off are in this same line, with their assets seized as well. He mentions his name as Baudin, and declares that no mob of peasants will tear him apart. Heboric speculates that there is something personal in Tavore's inclusion of Felesin in the Cull, and his admission of being a thief, then priest, then historian tips the girl and thug off to his identity. Heboric Light Touch, a historian outlawed and sentenced to this fate due to his scathing representation of the Emperess. Felesin states that they'd "differed in opinions" resulting in the two separate fates, one the Adjunct and Lorn's heir, the other in chains. They see Tavore, leading a gang of some guards and a group known as the Red Blades, officiating the proceedings. I don't have much to say on them aside from shelving away the passing reference of the Red Blades as "bloodless" and their ties to somewhere called the sea walls of Aren. (the Holy City at the end of the CoD, if I remember) It seems Tavore was also responsible for their mother's death, and someone named T'amber has taken up Ganoes old job.
Man, Parans are just built different it seems.
Heboric muses not only on being right about the Empress, but on predicting her next moves. As Machiavelli has taught us, tyrants are predictable. The nobles were caught unawares, dragged through a mockery of justice and civility, all to prepare them as desperately tempting targets for the "unsanctioned" mob outside. Bring them to their lowest, so the city's underbelly may reach to drag them further still. Laseen even took the opportunity to round up malcontents such as Heboric himself. eyeing the Adjunct, he can get no read on the mind within her wiry frame. He marches grimly on, internally invoking his old goddess.
As the hour and violence wear on, Felisin disassociates, beaten and spat upon, clothes wholly torn away despite Heboric and Baudin's protection, she observes the horror at arm's length. Baudin, for his part, is an unholy terror, using nothing but the brute language of deterrence to save himself. He's virtually playing to the crowd in some incomprehensibly barbaric way. Nose smashed, ear torn off, he marches on. Soon, what little farce of protection they had received from the guards is overwhelmed, and the crowd presses in for real. Barring teeth, biting and clawing, Baudin gains enough space and time to bellow into the crowd, offering a deal. A show of blood, for passage. In a horrifyingly graphic display, he breaks Lady Gaeseen's neck and saws off her head with their chains. The crowd shrinks back, the guards shrink back, Felisin and Heboric shrink back, I shrink back, and they move on, no time to deal with the barbarity witnessed. By the end, a third of the prisoners remain, most of the dead torn apart by the crowds. Heboric calls out the thug for his brutality but it is the girl's pleading voice, shivering and exposed, that moves him. He subdues, for now. As they board slave ships bound for Aren, Felesin contemplates how her suffering has just begun.
So that's it. A display of humanity at its worst, whipped up by both civilization and barbarity. Desperate and cruel calculus, or else dumb luck, is what will save people. From the disgusting rituals of Hood to the shocking acts of Baudin, here is a moment of black darkness. Genuinely difficult to read and then recap. But worse has happened, and actively is as I write and you read this. Such is life when stability falters and men turn to gratification. Well, Deadhouse Gates has been broached, so now I guess all that remains is to see where and when we'll turn up in the story proper, and how that will all unfold...

Way too early prediction for 2024 presidential polls, let me know what you think
way too early prediction for 2024 presidential polls, let me know what u guys think
Hi guys, Democrat leaning independent from Ohio here trying to make some way too early predictions for 2024. *Ohio will not be competitive (<5%) presidentially.
I made 2 maps on 270towin First one Trump vs Biden Second one DeSantis vs Biden
Methodology for swing states: Added NC as a swing state as: 2020 margin ~74k (Trump) 2022 GOP senate margin with R Trump backed candidate ~114k, while Dems total got outspent 2:1 (October 2022 politico) Added Virginia as swing state as it was flipped +12 by Glenn Youngkin, a very similar candidate to non-Trump prospective GOP nominees like Ron Desantis.
Swing states
Arizona Cari Lake ( Trump backed) lost by <1% in an non presidential year election even though Mark Kelly won by ~5%, largest margin for Dem senator since DeConcini (1988). Lean R for both Trump vs Biden Lean R for DeSantis vs Biden
Wisconsin Dem governor won by 3%>, GOP senator won by 2%>, epitome of swing state I gave it blank since GOP is having convention, and primary debates there, but Dems had convention in Philly 2016, and in Charlotte in 2012 and lost both. So historical proof of those things actually working in swing states isn’t great. Third party candidate will be key here, stealing mostly from D but also lil bit from R. Trump vs Biden Lean blue for DeSantis vs Biden… Abortion
North Carolina Trump won by 75 k, Ted Budd ( Trump backed) won by 114k Recent party flipping and abortion bans seem to have raised Dem anger, Democratic Party got outspent in state 2:1 43.8 mil to 22 mil in TV ads, Beasley was herself up 9 mil against Ted Budd total 43.8 vs 31. Previously in 2020 Dems had spent 136M total vs 109M total from Republicans and lost that seat as well to TrumpThillis by <2%. Money didn’t help there since Cunningham was marred by extramarital affairs allegations. Lean R for Trump vs Biden since Democrats haven’t shown they can do it since ObamaHagan in 08. Lean D for DeSantis vs Biden due to abortion restrictions, will be interesting to see if part flip anger results in D surge and boost Dems to the W.
Georgia Walker lost close 3%> Kemp won by 8. Third party will be key, mostly taking from Trump. Lean D Trump vs Biden, proven now in 4/5 state wide races 1 presidential 3 senate 1 governor Solid R DeSantis vs Biden, no history of Dems competing (<5%) to non Trump Georgia GOP before 2018 since Clinton 92 and Miller 2000. *I personally find Zelle Miller 2000 crazy, cause top of ticket Al Gore(D) lost to Bush 2 by 12 while Miller(D) beat Mack Mattingly(R) in same election by 20! This was due to Georgia having 12 consecutive years of D governors at that time, Georgia folks must have really hated Al Gore.
Pennsylvania Shapiro won by 17 albeit against lunatic Mastriano who wasn’t even endorsed by many other state GOP leaders Fetterman won by 5 against Oz (who may or may not have been from state, although H Clinton was elected to senate from NY in 2000 after being in Washington DC from prev 8 and Little Rock, Arkansas for prev 17 before that and Chicago, Illinois for her first 27…. but anyways Oz got boned by Mastriano+” You, your doctor and your local politician comments”) Progressive Dems grassroots organizations will keep Biden ahead, while pro - fracking/usual GOP groups will be supporting GOP candidates to keep them closeish. Lean D Trump vs Biden Lean D Desantis vs Biden
Way too early * Virginia Flipped by Glen Youngkin by 12 pts in 2021. Youngkin (crt, life starts at conception, anti-climate change) (signed bill getting rid of state portion of Virginia grocery tax, funded HBCUs (by removing it from DACA recipients), removed college req for some state jobs, endorsed by only black governor in Virginia history, squeezed more margins out of Trump 2020 Appalachia counties(crt/inflation Dem flips?) This is the way too early part, if Youngkin gets in the race, largely cause he can’t run in 2025 for governor, and finishes 3rd to Desantis and Trump which I think he would… it might make Virginia more interesting iffff combined with Youngkin running, GOP are able to capture both the state senate and state house in the local elections of the state.
By the way MASSIVE LOCAL ELECTIONS in Virginia this year, all 40 of the state senate and all 100 of the state house of delegates are up. I don’t see any Dems/ Dem media talking about it. Youngkin at the root of it is a ‘life start at conception,’ Republican that will definitely sign a heartbeat bill or worse. If pro-choice folks want to protect any sort of reproductive rights in the entire south, the GOP cannot be allowed to get at least 1 of the houses.

2023.06.08 02:41 lechatheureux The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 3 (The Kingdoms of Tsaparang, Taishigang and Khotesh)

Please check part 1 and 2 for context.
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 1 (Overview and The Gods) : worldbuilding (reddit.com)
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 2 (The Kingdoms of Jangshun and Monyul) : worldbuilding (reddit.com)
Tsaparang
Tsaparang is a Kingdom to the east of the other Tonpa Kingdoms, it is marked by thick jungles and winding rivers, a small number of mountains dot the landscape to the west, on the border with Jangshun and Monyul.
The jungles of Tsaparang are known for their dense vegetation and towering trees, with rivers that cut through the landscape and create a network of waterways. The jungle clearings are dotted with small villages, where the people of Tsaparang live and work in harmony with nature.
The people of Tsaparang have learned to live with the challenges of the jungle environment, including the risk of flooding during the rainy season and the dangers posed by wild animals. Despite these challenges, the jungle provides a wealth of resources for the people, including medicinal plants, exotic fruits, and valuable timber. The villagers have developed their own unique way of life, with a deep respect for the natural world and a strong sense of community. They work together to maintain their homes and farms, and to protect the jungle from outsiders who might seek to exploit its resources.
The kingdom of Tsaparang was founded by a legendary warrior king named Raja Dhananj, who converted to Tonpa and united several smaller kingdoms in the area left over from the Indraprastha Empire under his rule, he named it after a fortress city on the border of Monyul that was essential to his victory, he eventually built a grand capital city on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, which he named after himself – Dhananjpur.
The city is a bustling center of trade and commerce, and soon became known throughout the region for its wealth and prosperity. Over time, Dhananjpur grew into a magnificent city, with grand palaces, beautiful temples, and bustling markets, the most famous of which is the floating markets called Jalbazaar.
Jalbazaar is situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, which flows through the heart of the district. The district is famous for its bustling waterways, where vendors sell their wares from boats and barges that are moored along the riverbank. The floating markets of Jalbazaar are a riot of color and activity, with vendors hawking their wares to eager customers. The markets sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to handicrafts and textiles. The markets are busiest in the early morning, when fishermen bring in their catch from the river and vendors begin setting up their stalls. The air is filled with the smells of spices, cooking food, and fresh flowers, creating a heady atmosphere that is unique to Jalbazaar. Visitors to the floating markets can sample a wide variety of local delicacies, including steaming bowls of spicy fish curry, crispy fritters made from lentils and vegetables, and sweet desserts made from coconut and mango.
To the west of Dannajpur lies the village of Pashupati, the village sits on the edge of a dense jungle, its thatched-roof houses built on stilts to protect them from flooding during the monsoon season. At the center of the village is an ancient temple dedicated to the Dharmist God Pashupati, said to have been built by a powerful Thakur long ago. However, the temple has fallen into disrepair over the centuries, and now it is overrun with large cats, both tame and wild. The villagers believe that the cats are the guardians of the temple, and they feed and care for them as best they can. Some of the cats are even considered sacred, and are allowed to roam freely throughout the village. Despite the presence of the cats and the fact that the villagers abandoned Dharmism for Tonpa over a hundred years ago, the temple is still an important place of for the villagers, the temple's crumbling walls are adorned with faded murals depicting scenes from ancient legends and there is a sense of mystery and magic that pervades the place. Outsiders aren't rare in the village as it sits along an important road between two cities, but the villagers are wary of strangers who do not respect the cats, the temple or their ancient ways. However, they are hospitable and generous to those who show the cats respect and kindness.
The second most populous city in Tsaparang is called Serindia, it is nestled in the heart of a lush green valley, surrounded by towering cliffs on all sides, this small community has long been known for its bustling markets and vibrant culture. At the center of town, stands a magnificent castle, home to the ruling family of Serindia. Built from the finest stone and marble, the castle boasts towering walls and a grand hall where the noble lords and ladies of the land convene to discuss matters of great importance. But it's not just the castle that makes Serindia special. Just outside of town lies a sprawling grove of wild mango trees, known throughout the region for their delicious, juicy fruit. Every year, travelers from far and wide come to Serindia to sample the famous mangoes and to attend the lively festivals that celebrate the town's bountiful harvest.
The Company of the Wind have a large office in Serendia as every year people request them to deliver these magnificent mangoes so often.
As you wander the winding streets of Serindia, you'll encounter a diverse array of merchants and craftsmen, each offering unique wares and trades. You might stop by the blacksmith's shop to watch as he expertly hammers out a new sword, or perhaps you'll visit the town's resident healer, who is renowned for her ability to cure all manner of ailments.
The kingdom of Tsaparang is renowned for its skilled craftsmen and artisans, who create beautiful textiles, intricate jewelry, and exquisite pottery. The kingdom is also famous for its fine cuisine, which blends the flavors of local spices with influences from neighboring regions. Tsaparang has been ruled by a succession of wise and just kings and queens, who are respected and loved by their subjects. The royal palace is a grand structure, with beautiful gardens and courtyards, and is home to a vast library that contained works of literature and philosophy from throughout the world. The kingdom of Tsaparang is also known for its military might, and its armies are feared by neighboring kingdoms. However, the rulers of Tsaparang prefer diplomacy and trade over war, and are respected for their ability to negotiate peaceful solutions to disputes, the most famous army regiment of the Kingdom is called The Jungle Snakes.
The Jungle Snakes is a feared and respected regiment of soldiers who are known for their unique and deadly combination of a large tower shield and a short spear, this is meant to emulate a snake striking from the foliage of the jungle while the large shield allows the user to strike from safety. The soldiers of the Jungle Snakes are expert fighters, they train in their own unique martial art which requires them to train in the use of whip-swords, a sword made with a flexible whip like blade, although relatively useless in a large scale battle these swords are deadly in one-on-one fights and it is believed training with them develops agility and hand eye coordination. The Jungle Snakes is made up of elite soldiers who are chosen for their physical strength, agility, and quick reflexes, they are fiercely loyal to their kingdom and their commanders, and are known for their bravery and determination in battle. The Jungle Snakes are key component of the Tsaparang army, and are often called upon to guard royalty in battle. Their unique weapon and fighting style make them a formidable opponent, and they are feared and respected by enemies and allies alike.
Tashigang
Nestled deep within a treacherous and barely hospitable mountain range lies the kingdom of Taishigang, protected by rugged terrain and guarded by fiercely loyal soldiers. The people of this kingdom are rugged and tough, accustomed to the harsh conditions of their environment and deeply connected to the land that sustains them.
The tallest mountain in the known world is nestled within its borders, it is a revered holy site believed to be the last place on Earth the physical forms of the Three Gods were seen.
Taishigang is named after the two main ethnic groups that reside in the area, the Taishi and the Gangparan, occupying the north-west and the south-east respectively, the Taishi are said to be early cousins of the Jangshun people who migrated into the area hundreds of years before and the Gangparan are a group of people who escaped from the fall of the Indraprastha empire by migrating to the mountains. The kingdom is ruled by a council of clan leaders, with one among them being High Chief and first among equals, these leaders are chosen by their clans for their strength, cunning, and wisdom and in turn these leaders choose one among them to be High Chief, these leaders make decisions that affect the entire kingdom, and they are known for their fierce loyalty to the land and the people. The economy of the kingdom is based on mining and lumber, with the rugged landscape yielding valuable minerals and timber. The inhabitants of the kingdom work as miners and lumberjacks, extracting these resources from the earth and using them to build their homes and defenses.
Taishigang is home to a religious order of healers called “The Order of Spring” who are a a highly respected group of monks, the members of this order are known for their extensive knowledge of herbal medicine and natural remedies, as well as their spiritual practices that are believed to aid in the healing process. The Order of Spring has a long-standing tradition of passing down their healing techniques and knowledge from generation to generation, ensuring that their skills and expertise are not lost over time they are highly revered by the people of Taishigang, who often seek their help when they are sick or injured. Due to the harsh climate and rugged terrain of Taishigang, the Order of Spring has developed unique healing methods that are tailored to the specific challenges of the environment. They are experts in treating frostbite, hypothermia, altitude sickness, and other ailments that are common in cold, mountainous regions.
The members of the Order of Spring are dedicated to their craft and often travel far and wide in search of rare and unique ingredients to use in their remedies. They are known to journey deep into the mountain ranges and even venture into neighboring kingdoms to track down plants and herbs that are believed to hold powerful healing properties. Despite their extensive knowledge and skills, the healers of the Order of Spring are humble and compassionate. They offer their services to anyone in need, regardless of their social status or wealth. It is said that their selfless dedication to healing has helped to foster a strong sense of community and trust within the kingdom of Taishigang. The capital city of Taishigang is called Dzonggar, which means "fortress on the mountain" in the ancient language of the region. It is situated on a massive mountain peak that is over 4,000 meters high, with steep cliffs and a treacherous climb to reach the top. The city is built on multiple levels that follow the contours of the mountain, with each level connected by steep staircases and winding paths. The uppermost level of Dzonggar is the highest point in the city and is home to the Dragar Dzong, which serves as the administrative center for the region.
The Dzong is an imposing fortress with thick walls, ornate carvings, and intricate murals depicting scenes from Tonpa mythology. The upper level is also home to several important temples and monasteries that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As one descends the mountain, the levels become more densely populated with homes and businesses. The middle levels of the city are home to bustling marketplaces, where merchants sell everything from spices to textiles to pottery. The lower levels of the city are home to workshops and industry, where artisans create beautiful handicrafts using traditional techniques. The city's buildings are made of stone and wood, with sloping roofs to withstand heavy snowfall. The streets are narrow and winding, with small shops and homes perched on the edge of the mountain. Each level of the city is connected by steep staircases and winding paths, making navigation through the city a challenging but rewarding experience. Despite its rugged location and challenging terrain, Dzonggar is a bustling city with a vibrant culture.
The people of Dzonggar are known for their colorful textiles, intricate woodcarvings, and exquisite metalwork. The city is also famous for its festivals, which are held throughout the year to celebrate the changing seasons, important religious holidays, and the city's rich cultural heritage. The military of the kingdom is composed of skilled rangers and guerilla warriors, trained to navigate the treacherous mountain terrain and to use it to their advantage. The rangers are experts in archery and hunting, the most famous regiment from Taishigang is called The Mountain Demons.
The Mountain Demons are an elite fighting force said to be established by the Lhakpa dynasty, the Mountain Demons only take the tallest of warriors some are said to reach up to 2 meters high, when one is chosen they go on a diet of carbs and protein to gain body mass, their training regiment consists of lifting heavy things and running long distances carrying heavy boulders, in battle they carry massive heavy weapons like hammers, clubs and sometimes even heavy metal gloves. Taishigang is home to the famous Druk-Lha Tsham, the Dragon-Tooth Forest, an expansive woodland that stretches across the western part of the Kingdom. The forest is named after the imposing mountain range that rises up from the trees like the teeth of a dragon.
The forest is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including towering pine trees, colorful wildflowers, and a variety of wildlife such as deer, foxes, and even the occasional black bear, streams and rivers flow through the forest in the summer, providing water for the plants and animals that call it home. Despite its natural beauty, the Dragon-Tooth Forest is also home to danger. Bandits and outlaws are known to hide within its depths, preying on travelers who venture too far from the safety of the nearby villages.
The forest is home to the village of Kulik a unique place where the houses are built high among the trees, the villagers live in beautiful treehouses connected by a network of wooden bridges that wind their way through the forest. The houses are made from local wood and are decorated with carvings of animals and intricate patterns. Some houses have balconies where the villagers can sit and enjoy the beautiful views of the forest.
The village has a central meeting place where the villagers gather to socialize and discuss village matters, the meeting place is just outside the only stone building in the village, the Lalimamandir, said to be a stone temple dedicated to the Dharmist God Lalima but repurposed into the home of the ruling Gurung Clan, the Gurung, saw similarities between Lalima and Caihong, who after a lengthy purification process instead dedicated the building to The Mother but kept the original name to honour the builders. The villagers are self-sufficient and grow their own food in small gardens and farms scattered throughout the forest. They also hunt and fish in the nearby rivers and streams. The villagers are known for their hospitality and welcome visitors with open arms, inviting them to stay in their beautiful treehouses and share in their way of life.
The people of the kingdom of Taishigang hold a special reverence for Caihong for it is her practical ways that help them survive the rugged terrain. The people of the kingdom have a rich artistic and musical tradition, heavily influenced by their connection to the land and the animals. They are known for their intricate carvings, woven textiles, and colorful paintings, as well as their haunting music and dance.
Khotesh
Khotesh is a kingdom to the west, most of it is located in a vast and arid desert, with small portion of the Kingdom located on grassy planes and snow-capped mountains. The kingdom is known for its rugged terrain, with towering sand dunes, rocky outcroppings, and deep canyons. Most of its people are former nomads who converted to the religion of Tonpa and settled in one place, but there are still some nomadic people who travel with their herds across the desert. The people of Khotesh practice religion fervently, with Tonpa's teachings serving as the foundation for their daily lives. Their art and architecture reflect the influence of the Three Gods, with intricate carvings and paintings of Tonpa and his disciples adorning the walls of many buildings in the kingdom. The kingdom is ruled by a powerful monarch who resides in a grand palace in the capital city of Khanbalik. The palace is a majestic structure with domed roofs and intricate carvings, surrounded by lush gardens and fountains. Despite the harshness of the environment, the people of Khotesh have a rich cultural heritage. They are proud of their nomadic roots, and many still wear traditional clothing and practice traditional customs. The former nomads who settled in one place have formed close-knit communities, and their hospitality to travelers is legendary. Its capital city; Khanbalik is a built upon the grassy plains of the hills to the east of the Kingdom. The city is situated at the junction of several trade routes, which has made it a hub of commerce and culture. Its walls are made of wood and earth, with watchtowers at regular intervals to provide defense against raiders and invaders. The city is known for its harsh and unpredictable climate, with hot winds blowing in from the desert and cold winds descending from the mountains. These winds collide over Khanbalik, creating powerful storms that batter the city every autumn and spring. The storms bring heavy rains, lightning, and hail, making travel and trade difficult during these seasons, it is said that the sun-showers that regularly bathe the city in this time are a meeting of the Three Gods as the Sun, Wind and Rain are all aspects of Caihong, Druk-Ta and Daiden respectively, people often dance in the streets when a sun-shower happens. Despite the challenges posed by the climate, Khanbalik remains a vibrant and bustling city. The streets are crowded with people from all walks of life, from wealthy merchants to wandering nomads. The city is divided into districts based on trade and social status, with the grandest buildings located near the center of the city. The palace of the ruling Khan is one of the most impressive structures in Khanbalik, with ornate wooden carvings and sweeping roofs that curve upward like the wings of a bird. The temple district is also a popular destination for visitors to the city, with a variety of religions represented in the many shrines and sanctuaries.
Khanbalik is not only a bustling hub of commerce and culture, but it is also a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures. One of the unique features of Khanbalik is the seasonal influx of nomads who come to the city a few times a year during the changing of the seasons. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn and from winter to spring, nomadic herders from the surrounding grasslands and mountains make their way to Khanbalik to trade goods, socialize, and partake in the city's offerings. The changing of the seasons is a time of celebration and renewal, and the nomads play an important role in this cycle. During the autumn season, nomads bring with them fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. They also bring livestock such as sheep, goats, and horses to sell in the city's markets. In turn, they purchase items such as tools, clothing, and other necessities that they cannot produce on their own. In the spring, nomads return to Khanbalik with wool, meat, and dairy products from their herds. They also bring with them handmade crafts such as felt blankets, rugs, and clothing, which they trade for goods that will sustain them throughout the summer months. The seasonal exchange between the nomads and the city-dwellers is an important part of the culture and economy of Khanbalik. It fosters a sense of community and interdependence between the different groups, and it has been a tradition for generations.
One of the most interesting places in Khotesh is the town of Rokhala, a town carved into a towering sandstone cliff that rises high above the surrounding plains, the town's location is strategic, as it is nestled in a valley along a popular trade route, making it a profitable place for a settlement, the entrance to the town is a narrow, winding path that cuts into the cliff face, providing a natural defense against invaders. The town is built in a series of caves and carved out of sandstone, with buildings made from the same material, the structures are connected by narrow walkways, staircases, and bridges that cross over the canyon below. The town has a unique charm with its rustic stone architecture and winding passageways that twist and turn, creating an intriguing labyrinth of alleys and streets. The town has a diverse population, including traders, craftsmen, and mushroom farmers who make use of shallow caves to grow them in.
The town is home to a massive sandstone mining operation that exports sandstone all over the known world, sandstone from Rokhala is seen in the Confucian Kingdoms to the East, the Dharmist Kingdoms to the South and even the Caliphist and Mazdan Kingdoms to the West. Another interesting sight in the deserts of Khotesh is Altan Gazar, a bustling caravan that travels in harmony with the seasonal migration of a massive herd of Ibex, tents and yurts, woven from the finest camel and goat hair, are packed up and loaded onto sturdy pack animals as the city prepares to move to its next destination, the inhabitants are skilled in the art of packing and unpacking, swiftly transforming their temporary dwellings into a well-organized mobile settlement. As the herd of Ibex moves across the arid landscape, guided by the keen eyes of the city's inhabitants, the nomadic city follows in its wake, the city's layout is flexible and adaptable, with a central encampment for the tribal leader and their entourage, surrounded by the dwellings of other important individuals and their families. Water is a precious commodity in the desert, and the city relies on natural springs and wells discovered along the migration route, the inhabitants are experts in locating and utilizing these hidden water sources, carefully managing their usage to sustain their community and animals throughout their journey, rainwater is also collected during rare showers and stored in large containers for times when water is scarce.
The Ibex is an integral part of life to Altan Gazar, most adults carry a drinking horn made of Ibex horn, Ibex meat is regularly consumed in the spring with various spices found in the semi-arid grassy plains of their spring migration pattern, Ibex blood is sometimes drunk when water is scarce, fermented Ibex milk is a regular drink among the adults and Ibex skins are worn during cold winter nights. The city's architecture is designed to be lightweight and portable, with structures made of woven mats, reeds, and mud bricks. The city's inhabitants are skilled in constructing and deconstructing their homes as they move, utilizing locally available materials. Life in the nomadic city is intertwined with the rhythm of the desert and the migratory patterns of the Ibex. The inhabitants have a deep bond with their animals, particularly camels, which are used for transportation, milk, and meat. The city is a hub of trade and commerce, with merchants and traders from nearby towns and villages joining the city's journey, bartering for goods and services along the way.
The army of Khotesh is renowned for its hardiness and combat prowess in desert conditions. The kingdom has a long history of fending off invasions and raids from neighboring regions, and its army is specifically trained to operate effectively in desert terrain. The soldiers of Khotesh are known for their ruggedness and resilience, with many of them hailing from nomadic backgrounds. They are skilled in mounted combat, with cavalry units comprising a significant portion of the army. These cavalry units are particularly adept at hit-and-run tactics, using their speed and mobility to strike quickly and then retreat before the enemy can respond.
In addition to cavalry, the army of Khotesh also includes infantry units that specialize in desert warfare. These soldiers are trained to navigate harsh terrain and extreme temperatures, and they are equipped with light armor and weapons that are well-suited for the desert environment. They are skilled in using terrain to their advantage, and are adept at setting ambushes and launching surprise attacks. One of the unique features of the Khotesh army is their use of desert animals in combat. The kingdom is home to a variety of animals that have been domesticated and trained for military purposes, including camels and falcons. Camels are particularly useful in desert warfare due to their ability to traverse long distances with little water, and they are often used to transport soldiers and supplies across the harsh desert terrain. Falcons, on the other hand, are used for scouting and reconnaissance, and are trained to locate and track enemy troops.
The most famous army regiment of Khotesh is called The Scorpions, they are renowned desert survivalists and lone assassins, but in times of battle they are called upon to form a vanguard for the ruling Khan or Khanum, alone they are formidable but as a unit they are immensely dangerous, they are expert hand to hand combatants and excel at short, light weapons like shortswords and javelins. Another famed regiment of Khotesh is called The Hailstones, they are a Camel cavalry unit who use shock cavalry tactics, their camels have two riders, a spearman on the front and an archer on the back, the camels are bred to be massive to carry out such a feat, the spearman on the front charges into infantry lines with the spear and then turns away from the enemy to line up another charge while the archer on the back fires into their ranks, it is a very effective tactic that has won many battles.

2023.06.07 22:02 hansington1 [MODPOST] The Winds of Change: Europe's Quiet Revolution Amid Global Turmoil

Ekathimerini.Com

News Economy Opinion Society Culture Sports In Depth Multimedia
==============================================================================================
ATHENS, Greece - In a world grappling with seismic shifts, Europe has been subtly charting a new course. A wave of unity is sweeping across the continent, reshaping the political landscape in ways that were scarcely imaginable a year ago.
Last autumn, murmurs of a bold vision for a Federal United States of Europe began to circulate in the corridors of power. The ambitious initiative, conceived by German Chancellor Olaf Schultz and French President Emmanuel Macron, has since gained momentum, with all EU member states endorsing a constitutional treaty. The objective? To elevate Europe to the status of a global superpower, capable of asserting its influence on the world stage. As the year drew to a close, Belgium and the Netherlands made headlines with their decision to integrate their militaries under German command. This move, interpreted by many as a stepping stone towards a unified European army, ignited a trend that resonated across the continent.
By spring, Finland had acceded to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, with Sweden following suit by summer. These developments, some argue, were spurred by the escalating internal chaos in the United States, which has been increasingly preoccupied with its domestic affairs. Meanwhile, a mosaic of regional unions has been quietly materializing across the continent. The Mediterranean Union, comprising Albania, Greece, Italy, and Macedonia, was established in May. Concurrently, Austria and Switzerland amalgamated to form the Alpine Confederation, while Moldova, Hungary, and Romania consolidated their ties to create the Carpathian Federation. Even the Balkan States have reconciled their troubled past, leading to the reformation of Yugoslavia.
By midsummer, the Iberian Union had emerged, uniting Spain and Portugal. The Baltic Commonwealth, encompassing Poland and the Baltic States, was announced shortly after. Not to be outdone, Northern Europe proclaimed the birth of the United Kingdoms of Scandinavia. Even the British Isles witnessed a historic consolidation, as Ireland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom unified to fortify their control over the North Sea and their portion of the Atlantic.
In the midst of Europe's transformation, Ukraine has been navigating its own challenges. This resilient nation has been making strides in reclaiming its territory, even as the continent around it reshapes itself. In a bold move in July 2023, Ukraine successfully reclaimed the disputed Crimean Peninsula, a region annexed by Russia in 2014. This significant victory marked a turning point in a conflict that has been a source of regional tension for nearly a decade. However, the situation escalated further in August 2023, when Russia launched a counterattack. The Ukrainian Military responded with a large-scale counteroffensive, demonstrating Ukraine's unwavering resolve to defend its territorial integrity. As Europe moves towards greater unity, Ukraine's struggle underscores the complexities of the geopolitical landscape. The unfolding situation in Ukraine will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for the region and beyond, even as the continent embarks on its journey toward a new era of cooperation.
While the full implications of these changes are yet to unfold, one thing is clear: Europe is undergoing a quiet revolution. As nations coalesce to face an increasingly uncertain global environment, the continent is entering a new era of unity and cooperation. Only time will tell how this new Europe will shape the world of tomorrow.

2023.06.07 18:03 London-Roma-1980 CONFERENCE MATCHDAY 2 RESULTS

The bad news when it comes to conference play is you won't see as many high-profile matchups -- or upsets -- as you did in the latter days of the non-conference slate. The good news? The ones you get are still memorable. One thing to remember is that while a result may have a defined probability of victory -- over the long term, Team A being on average X points better than Team B -- games have wild variance. That's what makes the NIBL great. You never know when someone will put on a display.
*****
#7 Michigan 75, #8 Indiana 48. Safe to say nobody saw this defensive clinic coming out of the 1-3-1 zone that Michigan runs.
With Glen Rice leading the way on offense (17 points), Michigan held Indiana to 27% shooting and forced 15 turnovers as the Wolverines (11-3, 2-0) romped the Hoosiers (11-3, 1-1) in front of an excited home crowd.
"Defense wins championships," Rice said. "We showed we can shut down anyone tonight. Bellamy a big scorer? Not with us around. Zeke [Isiah Thomas] wanted to be the best guard in the league? Where was he tonight? Man, I'm psyched. We just crushed 'em!"
Nothing Indiana tried seemed to work. Passing lanes were cut off, and outside shots didn't fall. Going inside wasn't much better, as George McGinnis had his pocket picked repeatedly. It was so bad bench player Victor Oladipo led the Hoosiers with 8 points.
"It's just one game, but it hurt," Oladipo said.
#12 Ohio State 75, #13 Maryland 60. The start of the Big Ten season may be one that exposes Maryland's weaknesses.
John Havlicek continued to lead the way on offense with 18 points, while Mike Conley and D'Angelo Russell harassed Steve Francis into only 7 points and 7 turnovers as the Buckeyes (11-3, 2-0) knocked off the Terrapins (9-5, 0-2) to put their opponents in a hole in the Big Ten race.
"You never want to take a game in the Big Ten for granted," Havlicek said after the game. "We knew the harder we played, the more chance we had, and it's a long season but we got off on the right foot. Every game matters in the race to the championship."
Maryland went inside at every opportunity. Buck Williams led the team with 16 points, but on the occasions he didn't get the ball, it was usually because of backcourt pressure. Francis was hounded all day, and two of his turnovers occurred before he even got a pass off.
"They played great defense, didn't they," he said.
*****
Missouri 95, #23 Arkansas 89. Missouri has often been known as a more chaotic team, from the Big XII to the SEC. Chaos fell in their favor here.
Amidst a high-octane game, Anthony Peeler had 20 points as Missouri went small to keep up and saw it pay off as the Tigers (10-4, 1-1) upended the Razorbacks (10-4, 1-1) and got back to .500 in the Southeastern Conference in front of a sellout crowd.
"This is the kind of game these fans deserve," head coach Norm Stewart said after the game. "We knew they'd be trying to push the pace, so we mixed up our lineup and let Stip [Steve Stipanovich] go to town on the backups to keep the game close, and the whole thing paid off when Anthony stepped up big time.
Although Peeler led the Tigers in scoring, Stipanovich kept the game within reach when the second teams were in. Not able to keep up with the pace of the starters, Stipanovich held court in a half-court game for the backups, receiving entry passes from Keyon Dooling regularly and finishing around the rim. A three-point play near the end of the half over Andrew Lang gave Missouri a 50-47 lead at the break.
Sidney Moncreif led the Razorbacks with 18 points, and defensive specialist Joe Kleine had 5 blocks.
