Difficult teachings by matthew kelly

Christ's teachings without the magic.

2013.10.31 23:00 LovingAction Christ's teachings without the magic.

Jesus Christ is a big deal in America and throughout the world. His teachings have guided people to live fulfilling lives for generations. As we begin to understand the Universe better, we see that an anthropomorphic God is highly unlikely. Christian Atheism is an opportunity to challenge and learn from Christ's teachings on how to thrive as individuals and as a community.

2023.05.29 03:51 kikalara My first Anniversary post seperation

Today is the anniversary of mine and my soon to be ex husband's marriage. It's funny because in a way it almost snuck up on me. I wonder if I had stayed a bit busier, or if I hadn't quit my job this week that it would have come and gone and I wouldn't be dwelling on it like I am now.
My original plan for today was to continue filling out the mountains of paperwork that is the NYS Divorce packet. I've been steadly working on it for weeks now. Only to find out yesterday I was given the wrong packet by my lawyer. I got the one for relationships with no kids. We have a daughter together. So now I have to get the correct paperwork and all that time has been wasted.
He was not a good man for me. Many people around me tell me he wasn't a good man in general but I have a harder time dealing with that absolute. Regardless, I am better off without him. I know this now, even though it took me a lot longer than it should have to learn this. As I spend more time apart from him, I'm realizing how much that I let happen, that I swept under the rug thinking it was normal when it really wasn't. Sometimes it catches me by surprise when I tell my friends about a specific instance and they look at me like I was crazy for thinking it was normal.
He didn't hit me, but there were definitely instances of emotional and financial abuse as well as emotional neglect. I used to joke that I married a robot. He not only didn't understand or show emotions (other than anger) but would not allow anyone else around him to express them either. He called it disrespectful, especially if a child showed any emotion other than flat obedience.
Regardless, since I'm getting off point. I've been dwelling a lot on our relationship today. On how much I miss him. I'm angry at myself for missing him. I just want to move on with my life. Especially since he seems to have already. He is happy with his new girl, new kids, new car, ans remodeled house (which he finally decides to work on after I left despite being in a permenant state of half finished our entire marriage). There are still nights I cry myself to sleep because of everything. I feel like I'm not any further along than I was when he told me he wanted the divorce.
I hate that I miss him. I wish I could just get over it. I hate sitting here dwelling on the good times we had together when I know he's not thinking about it at all. Today has been so hard for me, but I guarantee it's just another day for him. We have been together for most of my adult life. I don't understand how it can just mean nothing to him now. How I can just mean nothing?
Some days are easier. To be honest it's mostly the days we don't speak at all. Sometimes it's just easier to go about my life and almost forget he exists. But because I have my daughter and I have to navigate visitation and such, I once again have to face him eventually. I hate how difficult he makes life. I hate having to argue with him until all this paperwork is put through, and God knows he won't do it, even though he's the one who wanted the divorce in the first place. Besides. He's already tried to take my daughter from me. I won't let that happen. So I don't trust any paperwork he tries to file.
I hate how long this court stuff is taking. I hate that I can't afford an actual lawyer because the volunteer lawyer I'm using can't/won't help me properly.
I ate that it's a mental battle every time it comes to something to do with my daughter. He wants to argue but seems to care little about the actual outcome of things. Especially if it requires effort on his part.
And yet despite all the headache he causes and how much he makes me want to rip my hair out; Despite all he has done to wrong me in the past and even now in the present I still love him and I still miss him? Why? What the hell is wrong with me?
I'm trying to focus on my daughter. Focus on what's best for her. On taking care of her and making sure that she knows that she is loved and cared for. So much of my energy goes to making her happy. To building a better life for the both of us.
I just want to be okay. I don't want to miss him, or feel anything for him anymore. I just want to move on with my life. I want to be happy. And make a happy life for my daughter and I. Sometimes I wonder if I'll ever get there.
Tonight sucks.

2023.05.29 03:49 Remarkable-Lake4383 My son ain't doing any of that gay stuff!

I'm not sending him to a school where he's learning about gay stuff or that trans. There's been a children's book recently about transgender that was being showed in schools to young children. The gay agenda has been on the rise. Its pretty rapid where we're living at. I don't want him learning about that. I make sure I meet all his teachers and make sure what they're teaching. What is the curriculum? And if he's learning about the gay stuff or transgender, I'm taking him out! And again like I said, he's not doing any of that gay stuff! I don't want him to be anywhere near or close to that. I know my son isn't gay. Like wake up! Don't you see this isn't appropriate and it's harmful? You think I'm making all this up just do I can hate on the gay community and LGBT? They're the ones causing the problems. A young child can easily be misled by transgender.
They might think they were born in the wrong body and want to switch genders. What you look at and feed your mind on has a impact on you especially when you're young. There was a woman in her 20s who posted a yourube video recently saying she's no longer transgender. She made a whole video that she fell into the transgender trap at 12 years old and why it had a bad impact on her. She's fine now obviously. Things like this needs to be taught at home not at school. Again none of this is made up and I have proof to back up all of these and I'm not just making these statements for hate.

2023.05.29 03:49 The_dots_eat_packman [Railroad Preservation] People have been debating what color a defunct railroad painted its steam locomotives longer than I’ve been alive.

This post expands on a comment I made in last week's scuffle thread about a multi-decade disagreement about what color the now-defunct Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) used to paint its steam locomotives and by extension, what color the 491, a now-restored locomotive operating at the Colorado Railroad Museum (CRM), should have been painted during her restoration. Tie a red bandanna around your neck, grab some popcorn, and sit back for a two-for-one hobby history and drama.
First, three short disclosures. One, I am associated with CRM, but I did not participate in the restoration of 491. Second, I have no preference what color 491 should be, I'm just glad she’s running. Third, 491 uses she/her pronouns. That’s not woke, it's historically accurate. Deal with it, you friggin’ lopsided, melting snowflake.
Before we get to the drama, let’s get a bit of context and background. The D&RGW railroad was founded in 1870 and eventually became a part of Union Pacific in the 1990s. D&RGW built and operated routes in the US states of Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. For a long time, these tracks were among the very few ways to easily travel west of Denver and through the Rocky Mountains. Those corridors were, and still continue to be, foundational parts of the US rail network.
Over time, D&RGW became renowned around the world for operating in some of the most beautiful but technically difficult terrain in North America. The passenger trains themselves became destinations, and the mountainous routes fascinated historians, railroad photographers, and model railroaders. Seriously--just look at this train going up a mountain like a goat. In addition, the railroad was notable for operating an extensive network of "narrow gauge" tracks—the rails were 3' apart instead of the standard 4' 8.5". Without getting too far into the technical weeds, narrow gauge worked better than standard in mountainous terrain.
Another thing that made the D&RGW a darling among railroad enthusiasts is that while they got rid of the steam locomotives on its mainline tracks in late 1940s or early 50s, just like most other railroads did, they kept on chuggin' down the narrow gauge tracks until 1968. To put that in perspective, that's the year the White Album came out, and the year that Planet of the Apes and Night of the Living Dead were released. 1968 was the year before Woodstock and Apollo 11, and only 15 years before the Internet was invented.
1968, in other words, is incredibly recent. It is within the lifespan of some of you reading this post. It should be kept in mind that when we talk about the D&RGW and the 491’s service life, those things, while distant, have not yet faded into history. There are many still-living people who worked on this railroad, operated specific pieces of equipment, and saw it around their communities. There are far more people who had a father, grandfather, uncle, or other relative involved in this industry. We aren’t discussing events in the distant past, and the people who care about this aren’t just hyper-fixated arcane details of history. For many people, the presence of this railroad, and the continued preservation of its remnants, are intensely personal.
Before we move on, let's take a moment to get some additional context on how railroads used color on their equipment. Today, you might notice that most railroads have a set "livery" that they paint on their locomotives. (UP yellow, BNSF orange, CSX blue, ect.) Prior to about 1900, steam locomotives were just as colorful, and were often decorated with elaborate trimmings made of polished metal. This is actually where the idiom "all the bells and whistles" comes from. Most toys, clip art pictures, and children's television programs depict steam locomotives from this era.
However, after about 1900, the appearance of most steam locomotives became far more utilitarian. The Victorian maximalist style had fallen out of favor across the board, especially after the wars, and most railroads in the US accordingly preferred unembellished equipment. Now, their locomotives were most often painted black with minimal amounts of gray, white, or silver trimming.
By about 1900, railroads companies had also noodled out that keeping a brightly colored and decorated locomotive clean enough that it didn't reflect poorly on the company required a lot of labor. Remember, these machines— this is worth harping on both because it's going to be a plot point in a little bit and because modern readers might not fully grasp what “steam power” means—are ON FIRE AT ALL TIMES WHILE OPERATING. A very messy chain of events results from this intrinsic property:
1.Where there’s fire, there’s smoke.
  1. Where there’s smoke and exhaust steam going out the same smokestack, there is the creation of a thick, jet-black sludge of train-dirt.
  2. The smokestack belching train-dirt is attached to a locomotive that is usually moving forward, which means that cancerous inky puke blows back onto any and every part of the locomotive situated behind the smokestack.
If anything on the locomotive isn’t painted black, in other words, it will very quickly become black unless it is being cleaned almost daily. Since corporate penny-pinching is always historically accurate, most railroads did the math and realized it was better for their bottom line to paint things the same color as train-dirt than it was to pay people to clean up train-dirt.
There were some exceptions to this preference. Often, railroads painted passenger locomotives to distinguish them from freight locomotives or to fit into the paint scheme used for every piece of equipment on a specific train. Two good extant and operable examples of colorful locomotives are the Southern Pacific 4449 and the Norfolk & Western 611. Other railroads preferred colorful, but very dark shades of paint for at least some of their locomotives. One of those railroads just so happened to be the D&RGW: There's documented evidence that instead of using black, they painted some of their locomotive a shade of dark green. For the curious, it is approximately hex code 1E3D0E.
Speaking of D&RGW, let's jump back to the 1960s and introduce the specific steam locomotive at the center of this drama: D&RGW no. 491. For you nerds—you know who you are—she is a K-37 Class superheated, outside-frame, 2-8-2 Mikado. She and nine other K-37s were built in-house by the D&RGW in 1928. 491 was taken out of revenue service in 1963.
As an aside, it was actually really rare for railroads to build their own steam locomotives. D&RGW decided to do this because of an entirely different historical drama which, though at the time was complex enough to max out the character limits of gossipy telegrams, can with hindsight be briefly summarized as:
Baldwin Locomotive Works: "Fuck you, pay me."
D&RGW: "NO."
Luckily for the K-37s, by the time they were taken out of service, there had emerged a very dedicated coalition of people actively working to preserve steam power in general and Colorado’s unique railroad history specifically. They were resoundingly successful: All but 8 of the 10 K-37 locomotives, and numerous examples of many other classes, were saved. All tolled, there are about 15 former D&RGW steam locomotives in operable condition or being considered for restoration at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec railroad, and the Colorado Railroad Museum. Additionally, most of the heritage railroads in Colorado operate on routes decommissioned by the D&RGW.
Two of the K-37s—the 491 and the 493—have been restored to operating condition. The 491 got her second lease on life at CRM in the early 2000s-2010s, and the Durango & Silverton returned the 493 to service in 2020.
While D&S made some purposeful modifications to 493 to render her more suited to 21st century operation, CRM set out with the goal of restoring 491 as close to historically accurate condition as possible. They were in fact contractually bound to do so, since the museum had applied and received significant funding from the Colorado State Historical Fund, and the terms of that grant required that any change made to the locomotive would have to be backed up by records or photographs preserved from her days in revenue service.
That should be easy, right? We just talked about those revenue days that were very recent, didn't we? Hit the independent brake and the automatic brake and throw on a handbrake just for good measure, because historical accuracy can be VERY tricky for railroad preservation.
Given that, the revenue service life of most pieces of equipment was, on average, about 40 years, many have been overhauled or significantly modified while in service. Others have been subjected to "Red Green this thing out of my shop and get it back on the mainline" types of repairs that, while technically accurate to the period, were not the typical or best practice and are inappropriate in a preservation setting.
There are, in other words, sometimes multiple and equally well documented versions of “historically accurate,” and it becomes a matter of opinion as to which one is best to recreate. Because of the very powerful personal connections to the equipment we discussed earlier, those opinions are often VERY passionate. It's at this point where we FINALLY where we get to the meat of this drama, because the restoration of the 491 put one specific question in the crossfires of that passion:
What color did the D&RGW paint the 491 and, more importantly, what color should CRM paint her?
Most people assumed that since the 491 showed up at the museum painted almost all black and silver, she would be painted the same way during her restoration. However, given that she had been in service for 35 years, it was possible that she had been repainted at least once or twice. In fact, for a long time, and I mean longer that the internet has even been around long, there has been a dogged faction of people who that believed the 491 operated at least some of her revenue service with her boiler jacket(a thin, metal sheet that holds insulation against the boiler and protects the boiler itself from the elements) painted dark green. As evidence, they pointed to old shop records, a few eyewitness testimonies, and cans of paint found in various facilities. This faction made it known that they wished the 491 to be painted green, and those who preferred black or thought black was better documented raised their objections.
It should have been easy to figure out which color was 'correct,' right? Didn’t you say there are records? There are, but the catch is that while those records amount to a pretty good body of evidence that the D&RGW used green paint at some point, on some of its locomotives, they don't provide a comprehensive record of exactly which locomotives were painted what color at what time. There’s nothing substantive that the 491 herself was painted green.
The next best bet, you'd think, would be to look at photographs. Unfortunately, this isn't reliable. Most of the revenue service photographs of the 491 and her sisters are in black and white, and it is difficult to conclusively determine which colors are being depicted, especially when they are very similar like black and the shade of green in question. Team Green indicated that some pictures render the boiler jacket in slightly lighter shades of gray, meaning it must be a different color, and Team Black counters that the difference might be due to shadows or that paint being more glossy than what was used on other components. Besides, they say, if 491 had been painted green, wouldn't more people REMEMBER her that way? Team Green has a hand answer for that, too: The K-37s simply spent most of their service lives too dirty for the green paint to be seen. That sounds like a stupid ass-pull of an answer, but until we cleaned her up a few weeks ago, I genuinely forgot that 491 was (spoiler alert) painted green.
For YEARS, this was such a hot debate that it probably could have raised 491 up to operating pressure. Some of the source threads I’ve linked to are from the early 2000s—note that many of them mention discussing this issue in the 80s and 90s—and this debate was brought up in pre-internet railfan publications and correspondences. It came to a head when, in the process of the restoration, staff at CRM found flecks of green paint while inspecting and cleaning 491 for restoration. The samples were collected, compared against known samples, and shown to people who were familiar with 491 and other D&RGW locomotives while in service. This exhaustive, almost forensic investigation proved that the 491 had, in fact, been painted green, so proponents of a black boiler jacket revised their position in the face of new evidence.
Just kidding of course.
While there was no question that CRM's restoration of 491 was very well done, there was, and is, a lot of grousing about whether those paint flecks were enough to prove that she was ever painted green. Some say that they were not present in great enough quantities to prove definitively that the paint came from the 491 or to determine exactly what parts of the locomotive had been painted that color.
Others point out that while the 491 and her sisters were built by the D&RGW, the railroad used boilers that had been assembled by Baldwin Locomotive Works earlier than 1928. Unless their customers requested otherwise, Baldwin painted the locomotives and parts it produced green as a default. The presence of the flakes, this opinion states, is only proof that the boiler was painted green at some point, not that it was painted green while it was part of 491.
The complicating factor is that Baldwin appears to have been very inconsistent with how they mixed up their “Baldwin Green:” Sometimes it was a very dark emerald. Other times, as with some paint on the tender 100% established to be Baldwin Green, it is an almost tan shade of olive green. Since we don’t have extant representations of all of those variations, the counterargument goes, we can’t definitively rule out that the boiler jacket samples came from Baldwin.
The most vehement of the anti-green coalition imagined a full-tilt, “Red Alert, folks, Andi in Kansas, you're on the air” level conspiracy about where the paint chips actually came from. They propose that they might have been, *ahem,* conveniently put there by someone who definitely wasn’t a D&RGW employee and who most certainly was not working on the 491 between 1928 and 1963. I don’t want to say much on this, because these folks just won’t be convinced, but that opinion is out there.
Who was convinced that the chips were good evidence, though, was the State Historical Fund, which approved changing the color of 491's boiler jacket to green. That’s how she is to this very day. There’s still some grousing that the she should have been painted black, and the broader debate about exactly which members of the D&RGW fleet was painted green is still a point of contention among narrow gauge railroad enthusiasts. I want to stress again that even though this drama might seem overwrought, most of it comes from a heartfelt dedication to preserving things “correctly,” and very personal reasons to prefer a certain version of “correct.”
I’m going to end this post, though, by saying this: It doesn't really matter what color the 491 actually is, because we also strive for historical accuracy in how often we wipe her down.
Finally, if you ever get a chance to visit the museums or heritage railroads mentioned here or others that weren't relevant, please by all means do so! There are many people working as hard as they can to keep this history alive, and we can always use your support and patronage.

I’m glad I don’t remember much about spring 2006 except his comforting voice saying they should stop insulting the quality of my lacrosse. Apparently, even the way I cradled my lacrosse stick was offensive.
So, it was a girl who taught me how to play lacrosse. A college student I paid with my minimum wage student job probably like $30 to teach me how to play.
Everyone was offended. My birth mother who had already lost moral credibility in my eyes was offended that I was speaking to that woman. My cross country lacrosse team captain stared me down in the eyes during lax warm up sprint for having the audacity to play lacrosse instead of outdoor track. I knew I was dropping a lot of balls. I could hardly shoot. Jo Ja was counting down the days until Harvard.
Mi Su, whose Torah portion must have been about justice, commented on the JV field, at the school across the street, shared his cautious scientific theory that the reason the quality of my lacrosse was so poor (poor is not a haha word at all whatsoever and working class consciousness rocks!) was because I was scared of something.
I don’t remember the varsity lacrosse captain’s name, although I could find it if I really wanted to. I remember Ja Co for example, and other more popula wel-known seniors from the class of 06.
I apparently have absolutely no idea whatsoever, even now, about the extent to which upperclassmen were gossiping about me in fall 2005. My favorite year of high school. Freshman. Ka Jo (Regina George) and I both chose to play indoor track, which meant we had nice long rides on the bus together to distant points in Baltimore County. I remember her and I laughing together, probably in shock about the transition from middle school to high school.
I remember parents complaining in middle school about how their children were describing personal details about their lives on AOL Instant Messenger away messages. I remember ktzaqt23, of course. My favorite memory about her also involves lashon hara, gossip in Hebrew.
He pointed at this random woman in the hallway ho wore her hair in a messy ponytail on the side of her head, with the ponytail bunched up on the top of her head into a bun. He said “is that a dead animal?"
If it took me 17 years to understand the first part of the joke it might take me a while to understand the punchline. I bet pussy smells great and I think there is a deeper meaning to the joke. I drove, among other things, to a distant dual part of Maryland to lacrosse camp to get special summer camp training in 2004 or 2005 and improve the quality of my lacrosse. My lacrosse is just fine. Ka Jo and I crossed paths in the Salt Lake City airport in 2019 as I was returning home unsuccessfully for my attemp from my attempt to save my Georgetown student status. Her hair no longer looked like a dead animal.
It is the ultimate hazing experience to run a high school based around a competition to see who can be the best Jew, then send us out in the world. My favorite verse in the Catholic Bible right now is “you are the children of your father the devil." That’s also classically one of the most anti-Semitic phrases. The thing is, we ourselves, the students and alumni of that wretched high school, are more anti-Semitic than most people I know. We were anti-Semitic when we threw each other under the bus to chase a false chimera of being the Regina George or Winkelvoss twin of Judaism.
skamjave - Sasha Katie Ally Mimi Jessica Ali Vicki Emily
My favorite member of skamjave is Reaper. My second favorite is Sa, who had the audacity to put Dave Matthews in her screen name. My third favorite is the woman who took her bra off in my room in Latter Day Saints Hospital. She trashed every single item in my hospital cell, and of course I let her.
The reason my lacrosse was so bad was because a woman taught me how to play lacrosse. I hired a college student to teach me how to play on the same field where we had tryouts that spring afternoon. Even the way I cradled and dribbled the lacrosse stick was offensive. But the varsity captain knew so much about lacrosse that he would tell I was taught by someone who uses a woman’s stick. I think my lacrosse is decent and has steraightened out now. I’m done with normal lacrosse sticks and have started teaching myself how to play with a longstick like Ja De. I’m going to go running tonihhht before it gets too dark, then shower.

2023.05.29 03:45 No_Employment4103 Venting general concerns, etc…

⚠️long and boring (maybe) I run off on tangents when I vent so sorry if it’s unintelligible or makes no sense I do my best I swear.⚠️
deep breath in exhale
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m just so tired.”
“If I’m so smart why can’t I do anything?”
“I’m so useless.”
These are the words reflect all the pain I can never say aloud with all the suffering and trauma I went through as a child. I even realized and can finally say it at least somewhere now that I’m just a foolish coward who’s just as selfish as world leaders the world over. Because at the age of ten I realized that we as a society as a people have become connected by technology across the world so we have went from the civilizations of old where there were kings queens and nations that rose and fell never having connected or k ow about the immensity of our world. And much like a person that was that time of our infancy a time for growth and learning to make mistakes many big and many small to gain a general sense of right or wrong but I realized we’re stuck or starting to stagnant we the people of this world have failed to truly unify to stand together and be compassionate towards one another despite language barriers or cultural differences or even generational gaps. I mean we have demonstrated we could do it it’s how we as a world stopped the hole in the ozone and even begun it’s healing by finding and forbidding of a particular chemical compound the world over but that was it nothing else came of that. We are so obsessed with achieving personal greatness… doing something truly great for ourselves and to be remembered and live the greatest of lives we forget to think of others and I’m definitely one of those selfish fools probably one of the bigger ones too. After years of struggling and coming up with many invention ideas I even came up with a robotics idea I’m pursuing know but still have the lack of skills experience or general know how on how to complete and I STILL don’t wanna trust people to help me get it done when it’s very common for trust to be the linchpin in making such things come to fruition otherwise even if I spent my whole life to do so I STILL wouldn’t see it come to be so I don’t care anymore if someone I else does it so be it. I want to make a robot that has portable power cells that have enough kilowatts in them to fuel the robot for an eight hour stint with only one hour of exercise using exercising equipment that generates electricity that goes into the power cell. So people can only put in an hour of effort and fill 3 eight hour power cells and fuel a robot for 24 cycle so people could get a job contract, an employment agreement or something equivalent to get a pay check for 24 hr (but mostly 16 hr paycheck so the robot owned by the company has a cool and or repaired/maintenance time each day) so only 1-3 hours of exercising a day plus the commute to said job to swap out the batteries. this could allow the companies to pay lower wages but let the employees work less while get more total pay for much less work giving the companies less workplace accidents and other common workplace issues to decrease while giving people more time each day to do what they love to do or enjoy essentially opening up possibilities that they normally want to do because of time or money issues. this wouldn't of course be for jobs that need or be better handled by people like psychologist, politician and the like. this would overall allow more people the freedom to pursue higher knowledge and even better pay or just enjoy the pleasures of a less difficult life. while the companies with the robots raise there bottom lines by having to pay less per hour per employee and in damages from work related accidents since its easier to fix a robot than a person (probably cheaper to). but then that means there would need to be laws rules of worker company contract etiquette and tariffs on using power cells shipped in from other countries already filled so that it’s cheaper for the companies to use locals for charging the power cells the world over. Though there would be bumps in the road like companies would want to pay as little as possible per hour for the robotic avatar workers hours but it would still have to be still be reasonable since keeping it at a reduced but still good level of pay would open the very employees financial. Situations up to the point where they would most likely have more disposable income so more luxury items can be purchased more often increasing overall sales and creating more jobs so with companies like the ones in the automotive industries seeing an increase in automotive repairs at their workshops getting more luxury parts installed and seeing an overall boom in the world economy. but this is of course with strict laws and regulations on both ends so no one side takes advantage over the other especially like using solar or wind powers as source of energy to fuel the power cells. It gets more complicated (like anti terminator safety buttons/programs) and there are things I’m not thinking of but this is my releasing of this idea so maybe one day if someone beats me to it I can hopefully see the furtherance of technology help us as a people become more united as a people and bring more joy and happiness to everyone even if it’s just an unattainable fantasy by someone ignorant fool it is my dram for a brighter, happier world for everyone.

2023.05.29 03:45 PopeSpringsEternal What the other villains are up to now in my Skylanders revival world

It's been 7 years since Imaginators (and 12 since Skylands and Earth came into contact), and the rest of villains have decided to follow the villain senseis' down of path of good... or at least neutral. Here's what they're up to:

Sheep Creep is still leading the Sheep Rights Movement, but non-violently this time.
Gulper took up acting, and now plays Officer Gulper on Captain Happy's World of Learning, an absurdist parody of the Earth program Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.
Tussle Sprout opened a flower shop thanks to the power of antihistamines.
Buzzer Beak retired to his home in Phoenix Psanctuary. His family welcomed him back with open arms.
Slobber Trap is now a professional wrestler for SWE (Skylands Wrestling Entertainment). People complained that he won too much, but then Vince McMage got ousted, and originality is starting to reign. That pun was unintended.
Bruiser Cruiser started his own mech-fighting league.
Broccoli Guy and Chill Bill have become beloved radio cohosts. Chill Bill even got to become the first troll to broadcast a professional scoreball (a Skylandic sport combining basketball and soccer) game.
Troll 1 and Troll 2, formerly of Shrednaught got hired by a construction company.
Cuckoo Clocker is now the lead singer of the ska-punk band The Songbirds.
Bomb Shell joined the Mabu Defense Force as a demolitions expert.
Chef Pepper Jack opened several legitimate restaurants, his most recent venture being a chicken sandwich shop called "Call of Poultry".
Brawlrus is a Brawlrus and a submarine repairman in Rainfish Riviera.
Masker Mind became a scientist at Telescope Towers. He's hard at work on proving his 118-element theory.
Brawl and Chain is now a deliveryman for the AIPS (Americ Isles Postal Service).
Chomp Chest became a professional eater and, according to Chef Pepper Jack, his best ten customers.
Eye Scream is a teacher at a Mabu school. Her students dare not chew gum in class.
Eye Five and Dreamcatcher, inspired by the former's experience with chongo, tried to bring the sport to reality, but failed spectacularly. Luckily, after Vince McMage was forced to sell his spring boomball (a football-esque Skylandic sport derived from the ancient Troll sport of boom) league, the VBL (Vernal Boomball League) to Auric, he let the two ex-villains on as co-owners.
Shield Shredder, Krankenstein, Fisticuffs, and Scrap Shooter formed a comedy troupe called the Sillykins. They actually got a show on NuTV.
Rage Mage opened an ice cream shop. He has often said that he hopes it'll last 10,000 years.
Cross Crow became a A/C repairman. His fan repairing skills are second to none.
Grinnade joined a Molekin mining company as a miner.
Threatpack is currently teaching physics at the prestigious Hartford College.
Bone Chompy now works as a medic for the Mabu Defense Force.
Smoke Scream now does search and rescue as a rubble-clearing flamethrower guy.
Trolling Thunder has taken up land racing for Pandergast.
Lob Goblin became a locksmith. In his spare time, he teaches other trolls to count past 7.
Chompy retired to his home in the Mirror of Mystery to bite things.
Mab Lobs went back to the Mirror of Mystery and became one of Master Ordar's first Skylanders.
Luminous took up stage acting, starring in a Skylandic production of Les Misérables, and is currently writing a play of his own about every single monarch the Earth nation of England has had since the Earth year of 1066.
Nightshade became a home alarm consultant.

2023.05.29 03:45 Koala_Guru [TotK] I think the easiness of the BotW dungeons kinda broke dungeon discourse.

The dungeons in TotK are not so much a return to form as a big step in the right direction. While the structure of finding and activating five things throughout the dungeon has remained from the previous entry, the theming and puzzles tend to be much more in-line with what we've come to expect, even if many are on the easy side.
However, one dungeon comes the closest to that more traditional feel. Many would say the Lightning Temple. So many of its puzzles rely on reflecting light with mirrors to shine it on specific areas, which is something that used to be somewhat of a staple of the games that hasn't been seen for a bit. However, it's still not really designed all that traditionally. If you ask someone who has studied older dungeon design the things they find to be essential to that design, they may bring up certain things that truly make the dungeon one big puzzle box, like a design that winds back and forth over the same areas to reach new ones, and a requirement of memorization of certain room layouts or switch functions to progress. The Lightning Temple doesn't quite have that. Its design has you returning back to its central room not due to a weaving structure, but because your four objectives are simply along four paths branching off from that central room.
No, the dungeon that is by far the closest to older Zelda games in all of TotK is one that I've seen a ton of hatred for. One that is called frustratingly designed and overwhelming. I am talking about the Fire Temple.
This is why I say BotW broke dungeon discourse. When that game came out with all its frustratingly easy Divine Beasts, and in fact was so popular that it was many's first introduction to the Zelda series, it led to lower expectations when it came to the dungeons of the sequel. And so when you see something like the Wind Temple, Lightning Temple, or Water Temple, dungeons that are definitely more complex than Divine Beasts but still not overly so, those dungeons give that rush of dopamine. Like they're uniquely themed! They have unique bosses! Unique puzzles! And those puzzles are more complex! I can figure them out!
And when you reach the Fire Temple, which is actually more traditional, you get so much frustration when you can't figure it out so easily. Because the easy time had with the other three and the previous game's dungeons warps the brain to see anything more complex as a ridiculous difficulty spike. I have seen tons of playthroughs where players will spend a long time building complex mechanisms that allow them to ascend all the way to the top rather than even try to interact with the dungeon mechanics and try to learn what they're being taught. It's things like this that make me wish the Temples limited actions like climbing or what devices could be dispensed like the shrines do. But let's actually look at the design of the Fire Temple.
The Fire Temple relies on three major mechanics to construct its puzzles and progression. The first is the usage of Yunobo's ability to roll forwards and break red rocks. The second is the use of hydrants to create platforms on lava. And the third is the real central mechanic: the mine carts and the long series of interlocking rails throughout. Things start off simple. A hydrant is already creating platforms on the lava to show you how it works, which you use to hop across. Then you reach a pool that you must create the platforms in yourself. You get in a mine cart and find out you can use Yunobo to hit signs that switch the tracks around. The first time you do it, you hit a dead end, so you realize if you head back, hitting the sign again will push you down a new path.
Things begin to ramp up in complexity as the dungeon moves along. Now you'll come across rock platforms you must use recall on to traverse lava rivers, or sections of tracks with switches that will move them up or down to create new pathways to different floors depending on how you set things up. Mechanics start to be combined as well. Using created platforms in the lava to build a ramp for Yunobo for example. The dungeon will also teach you certain mechanics to reach chests or capsules in order to get you to think to use the same mechanic nearby to actually solve a puzzle. My favorite example of this is a room with several severed bridges. The player's first instinct would be to combine the severed halves but they're too short to use in that way. Instead, they may discover that leaving one half laying in a certain position will create a ramp that allows Yunobo to rocket up a wall and destroy a block. Doing so allows you to access some capsules. But across the room, there is another bridge with a similar setup. This one can be connected, but it doesn't accomplish much that way. Instead, now that you know how the previous bridge worked, you will realize that the shape of the connected bridge allows Yunobo to reach a block in the ceiling, allowing you access. This same mechanic is held onto in the player's mind hopefully, as it will return with the boss fight.
But it's not just the puzzle design that needs mentioning here. Other aspects of the dungeon's design harken back to the older games. For starters, we have to talk about how this dungeon actually unlocks a shortcut from the starting room to higher up once you reach a certain area and hit a switch that starts an elevator. Older dungeons used to do this sort of thing all the time because the dungeon design required it. But the dungeon also has an interweaving design that requires treading back and forth over previous rooms to find new ways to progress thanks to new information. For example, one mine cart "puzzle" starts off extremely easy, simply asking you to flip a switch to make track angling up towards you instead angle away from you for progression. Later in the dungeon, you will discover that, if it is back in its original position and you are on the correct side, it can almost connect to a room a floor above you. But it will only do so if you remember to keep the positioning of a rail in that room in a specific setup.
I'm not calling the Fire Temple one of the best dungeons in the series or anything. But I am saying it's the best dungeon we've had since Skyward Sword. And the amount of flack it gets is rather telling in terms of how little thought has had to go into solving the dungeons in BotW and some of TotK. I just hope the Zelda team doesn't look at the heat this dungeon gets and decides to make them all as easy as say the Wind or Water Temples in a future entry.

2023.05.29 03:45 majorcatfan09 I'm in my 30s and just now trying to get my GED. Today I had a flashback.

I've been a long time lurker on this sub, and this is my first post. I cut contact with my narcissistic family 8 years ago. I was physically, verbally, and emotionally abused my entire life. I was also infantalised because my nmom couldn't deal with life without a scapegoat. She never taught me how to cook, clean, drive etc. I struggled constantly with school because on top of the abuse at home, I was also being bullied daily. My life fell apart and I dropped out of high school. Years went by, I cut contact a few times with nmom but she always pulled me back into her web with her gaslighting and guilt trips. I finally gave up after she did something completely heinous to me and I haven't spoken to any of my family since then. I have studied for the GED before but Math was always the hardest subject for me. I just didn't get it, I couldn't grasp most of the concepts and out of frustration, I would just throw in the towel. As I got older, the fear of being so old and trying to do something I should have done a decade ago held me back. I have learned how to cook, clean, and drive, so the only goal left is my GED. A few weeks ago I made up my mind that this time I was going to do it. I've been studying daily, and trying as hard as I can. Today I started to get frustrated and I asked myself why I always give up when things get difficult. I had a flashback that hit me like a truck:
When I was in high school and failing math I had a very good school counselor. He was one of the few people in the world that I felt that I could trust. My parents were telling me daily at this point how useless and lazy I was and how I would never amount to anything. We had a math test coming up and I told the counselor how much I was dreading it, so he began to patiently tutor me for the next two weeks after school (he tutored a couple other kids as well). I worked harder than I ever had, and when the test came, I made an -A. I was elated when I got the test back! For the rest of the day all I could think about was showing my parents the test and seeing pride in their faces for once. I took the bus home (which was an hour long ride). When I finally made it home I ran up the driveway and through the front door and shouted "I did it! I passed the test!" My parents were in the kitchen, and when my ndad looked at the test he smirked and said "I always knew you could do it. I was using reverse psychology. That's the reason you passed in the first place!" Nmom just sat there nodding her head and telling me that the only reason I was such a failure is because I didn't believe in myself, and I should, because they work so hard to encourage me. I was crushed and I never put any more effort into my school work after that.
Thank you to anyone who has read this far, I just wanted to vent about this. Sometimes I wonder if I'm just overreacting about it. It was just a test. But then I think back to all of the times they destroyed my self-esteem and how I still feel paralyzed by my fear of failure.

2023.05.29 03:44 fernesmee I don’t know how to tell my (29f) SIL (45f) that I’m expecting?

Some backstory: my SIL (married to my husbands brother) has a pretty distinctive personality, and I usually steer clear the best I can. She’s the type of person that if you look at her wrong, a tantrum will follow with tears and she’ll ignore you for 3-6 months. Every instance at a family dinner, someone says something wrong or offends her and she ends up pouting in another room on her phone ignoring everyone. Everything is a huge deal, everyone is out to get her, and everyone always hurts her feelings. Due to this, I keep her at an arms length and we’re pretty much a “Hey” at family stuff maximum. My husband is the same way. She really has no relationship with anyone in the family and when she does, it’s for personal benefit.
For the last 3 years, SIL has been trying to get pregnant and pretty much ignores any and all advice given to her by doctors and instead takes the advice of her friends (“Take these vitamins! They worked for us!”) They actually recommended procedures for her conditions that would assist with her getting pregnant, but she won’t pull the trigger because it’s “too difficult for her.” The whole situation sucks, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. They had a miscarriage that was a confirmed chemical pregnancy 2 years ago and was insane during the entire thing. Screaming at people and blaming it on her hormones. Emotionally abusing her husband and degrading him because she was mourning. I feel bad but at the same time it’s like.. uhhhh…
The lovely day has now come that I’m expecting, and with her track record, I have no clue how to bring it up or be happy about it without the chaos shit storm that is sure to ensue on her end. I would love to tell BIL, but I’m not sure how to announce without tears, hurt feelings, and a massive breakdown. Any advice?

2023.05.29 03:43 Important_General_14 Struggling so much with depression, OCD, extreme doubts

Hi, I’ll try to keep this short.
I’ve been struggling with unbelief and doubts for the last 6 or so years. Sometimes, rarely, I feel like my faith is good enough. Most of the time I don’t know if God is real or not.
I’m going through some5ing extremely difficult health wise for the last 9 years, and it has taken my quality of life and my will to live.
I’ve prayed, had hands laid on me, people praying for me on a regular basis etc, but I still have this horrible condition.
I’m highly sceptical and wary of the Gospel writers (why should I trust them on word alone?) and yes I have read, watched, and researched the top theologians and proof of gospel historicity and reliability
I guess I’m sick of hearing 2nd hand stories of how Jesus helped others while I continue to suffer. Why doesn’t He help me? Does He love me or even exist?
I’ve tried to have faith, still try. I’ve said the Lord’s Prayer. I share the gospel regularly. I pray, read the Bible etc.
Maybe Calvinism is real and this is what it looks like when someone who isn’t elect tries to be saved?
Either way I’m probably going to be dead by next year. I wish God reached out after many years of Him excluding me
