It's Tuesday and the second day of Watches and Wonders. Most of the reveals took place yesterday, some after I posted and some just didn't fit in the post. So here we go, a roundup of everything that's happening at Watches and Wonders, a bit shorter, but with more watches.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Introduces the Reverso Tribute Chronograph, the Duoface Tourbillon and Colors For the Reverso Small Seconds

• Reverso Tribute Chronograph. That says it all, pretty much. Jaeger-LeCoultre has announced a Reverso chronograph in the 1930s-themed aesthetic of their beloved "Tribute" models. It comes in stainless steel and rose gold. Both versions have the same dimensions - 49.4 (lug to lug), 29.9 wide, and 11.14mm thick - with, you guessed it, two faces. One side is a classic time-only dial, while the reverso side is a skeletonized dial with a large chronograph seconds measure and a 30-minute retrograde indication. The skeleton dial comes in handy to see the brand new movement, the JLC 860, which is manually wound and supports a power reserve of 52 hours. Pricing for the Reverso Tribute Chronograph starts at $21,400 in steel and $37,400 in pink gold.
• JLC also updates it’s classic Tribute models with new Small Seconds models with vintage colors. The watches feature faceted dauphine hands, colored dials, applied bar indexes, and a small seconds display at 6:00. The difference between existing models is the new pink gold, ultra slim case which has decreased by a full millimeter in thickness from its stainless steel predecessor. Unfortunately the updated steel model remans 8.5mm. There are two colors you can choose from - a mirror effect black lacquer dial (an homage to the black dials of the original 1931 Reverso) and a burgundy lacquer dial. Both are paired with straps from Argentinian heritage brand Casa Fagliano in complementary colors. The third pink gold case dial variant comes in sunray-brushed silver foil and is paired with another Fagliano Collection strap and an additional black alligator strap from JLC. The final addition: a silver opaline dial with black nickel finished hands and indexes for the steel Tribute case. Price: $9,600 (steel) and $21,900 (pink gold)
• Paying homage to the first tourbillon they introduced thirty years ago, Jaeger-LeCoultre showed off its beautiful Reverso Tribute Duoface Tourbillon in 18k pink gold. The watch uses the Calibre 847 and features two different dials - a clean and elegant one with a time function and tourbillon on a silver sunburst dial, and the reverse with miniaturized black dial showing a second time zone and a day-night indicator. The black dial features partial skeletonisation, including hand angling of the bridges, done by JLC's Manufacture's Métiers Rares workshop. And you will pay for the manual labor. $139,000.
• Their releases covered sports, elegance and high horology. The last thing JLC showed was a little bit of bling with the Reverso One Precious Colors, two new models that harness the brand’s in-house Métiers Rares atelier to create two colorfully enameled and gem-set creations. The case is crafted from gold (white gold for the green colorway and pink gold for the blue colorway), but the enameling work and gem-setting steal the show. Patek Philippe Introduces The 5178G-012, A Stunning Minute Repeater With a Flinqué Enamel Dial

• After unveiling new Aquanaut models, a very sporty Calatrava, a Calatrava with a 24-hour display and their first pilot-style Travel Time Chronograph, Patek dropped a big one - a Grand Complication. The Patek Philippe 5178G-012 sports a hypnotic guilloché pattern which has been done by hand (unlike the stamped one they put on a $40.000 Calatrava). The dial plate is made of white gold just like the case and then covered with blue Grand Feu enamel. The calibre R 27 PS can be seen through the sapphire caseback, with a large 22k golden micro-rotor for automatic winding and two lengthy gongs for a loud and clear minute repeater complication. Price on request.

Vacheron Constantin Introduces Three New Retrograde Models In The Traditionelle, Overseas, And Patrimony Collections, As Well As New Sizes

• For the first time, Vacheron is introducing its signature retrograde date display into the Overseas line, taking an old-school complication and bumping up the sportiness. The in-house Calibre 2460 R31L/2 features a retrograde date (moving clockwise across the top half of the dial before jumping back to the first day of the month after 31 or whenever you set it) and a hyper-accurate moon phase accurate to 122 years before needing a one-day correction. These displays are reflected in a blue lacquered dial with a velvet-finished flange and sunburst satin-brushed center. You'll also notice the "age of the moon" indicator above the moonphase aperture on the dial, showing where the moon sits in its 29 days, 12 hours, and 45-minute cycle orbiting the earth. Price is on request.
• The retrograde date will also be included in the Vacheron Constantin’s Traditionnelle family of watches with the Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle Tourbillon Retrograde Date Openface. The watch has a 41mm pink gold case that is 11.07mm thick. Its round shape is emphasized by particularly long lugs, which, in combination with the dial, makes for a contemporary blend of styles. Parts of the dial are skeletonized and the upper half of the dial features the retrograde date display with its blackened hand with a white tip. The lower half features the Maltese Cross tourbillon that integrates very nicely without overpowering the other elements. No word on price yet.
• Then there’s the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date, a beautiful 42.5mm platinum case with a stunning salmon-colored dial. The dial features a nice sunburst finish, bringing life to the already impressive color. In this piece, the retrograde displays of the day on the lower half and the date on the upper half take center stage. Price is also unknown at the moment.
• The regular Overseas gets a slight refresh, as well. Until today, the line has been available in 41mm and 37mm options only, but Vacheron Constantin clearly saw enough demand for a smaller proposition, resulting in the release of the Overseas self-winding 35mm. The four references are split across two metals, available in stainless steel of 18k 5N pink gold, with the metals extending to the accompanying bracelets. Snazzing them up a little, the Maltese cross-inspired bezels of the diamond-set models are graced with 90 round-cut diamonds, guaranteeing a minimum of 0.86 carats Vacheron is tight lipped on the pricing of all of their models.

• The Chopard Alpine Eagle is the family-owned brand's twist on the integrated bracelet sports watch, most popular in blue and then later green. Chopard now upgrades both the case and dial. Chopard has taken the AE and gone the ultra-thin route, creating a watch that is now just 8mm in thickness (the OG is 9.7mmm thick for comparison). In so doing, it has also adjusted the dial layout, forgoing a center seconds display in favor of small seconds – and, along the way, getting rid of the controversial date window. The salmon dial color, officially called "Monte Rosa Pink," contrasts against the lume-filled, distinctive, applied Roman numeral markings. This watch is not limited and will join the existing Alpine Eagle collection at It is a price of EUR 24,400.
• Another addition to the Alpine Eagle family is the introduction of the high frequency new titanium Alpine Eagle Cadence 8HFthat features a "pitch black" colored dial.
• There’s an addition to the L.U.C. Collection, as well with the new L.U.C. 1860 in a Lucent Steel case and solid-gold guilloché dial. It’s a classy thing at 36.5mm, with a salmon dial with a hand-guillochéd radiating pattern. It’s priced at $23,200.
• The Chopard IMPERIALE is a range of feminine watches typified by floral motifs and elaborate material decoration, however this new limited edition for Watches & Wonders is perhaps their most ambitious and glamorous display yet. For the latest Chopard IMPERIALE, the lotus flower has been revisited as the underlying theme of both the decorations and complications. The lotus is celebrated across many cultures and has a long list of significant associations, but this particular homage follows an Egyptian legend where the sun rises once the petals have opened at dawn before setting as the flower closes in darkness. You can see how the lotus has been represented with resplendent 18k rose gold, engraved delicately to show the texture of the petals. The top half of the flower has been skeletonised to reveal the dial underneath, which is actually a fully-revolving day/night indicator.

The New Oris ProPilot Altimeter Is Back Thinner Than Ever, And An Official Kermit Watch

• The deeply cool Oris ProPilot Altimeter is back, thinner and with a higher operating ceiling (up to 6,000 meters). It’s still a big boy at 47mm wide, but now 16mm thick. Yeah, it’s not thin, but it’s an improvement. The case is made of carbon fiber with a titanium bezel The Oris ProPilot Altimeter will be available starting in March of 2023 with a retail price of CHF 6,200 and buyers will be able to pick from two references, one that displays altitude in meters, or one in feet.
• The Rolex Kermit is no longer the only kermit watch. Oris has partnered up with Disney's The Muppets for a new ProPilot X Calibre 400 "Kermit Edition." Titanium case, titanium bracelet, in-house movement. And Kermit the Frog pops up once a month in place of the numeral "1" at the 6 o’clock date window. Priced at CHF 4,400, this just might be the deal of Watches & Wonders.

Parmigiani Fleurier Flys Under The Radar With A Slew Of Very Interesting New Watches

• Everybody was excited about what the big brands were showing at Watches & Wonders. A lot of people were disappointed as the majority of changes were introductions of new sizes and colors to watches that have been around for years. So they turned to smaller watchmakers. Like Parmigiani Fleurier, who knocked it out of the park with their offering. First up is the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante, which offers a similar design to last year’s GMT model, but reimagines the collection’s rattrapante mechanism to be a highly innovative feature for measuring elapsed time. Not only is the way the watch displays time innovative (go read the article, it just doesn’t fit here), it could be a great deal. That’s a funny thing to say about a watch that costs $30,600, but considering the materials (steel, platinum, gold…) and the tech in the in-house movement, it could be a steal.
• As mentioned, the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante is very similar to the GMT and to differentiate them a bit, Parmigiani Fleurier gave it a very fancy update. The dial colour remains unchanged – that deep Milano blue featuring a guilloché main grain d’orge pattern, uninterrupted by unnecessary indices or logos, but the case gets an 18k rose gold update. This has a more substantial price of €57,630.
• Since Parmigiani Fleurier’s change of ownership and introduction of the Tonda PF range in 2021, the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro-Rotor has been a distilled representation of the brand’s DNA. It began with a subtle flex in stainless steel and a platinum bezel, then evolved into a soft rose gold edition, but now it embraces the power of platinum’s luxurious heft in a “stealth wealth” package. You will need wealth, as it will cost you CHF 85,000.
• Parmigiani Fleurier also updated their trio of calendar watches, those that famously tracked three different calendars - the most complete version of a constantly varying chinese Xiali calendar, an evolution of their 2011 islamic Hijri calendar table clock, now housed in a wristwatch, and finally, a watchmaking classic in a Gregorian Annual calendar.

Hublot Announces A LOT Of Watches. No, Really… 17 New Pieces

• Hating Hublot online has become a bit of a meme. But a meme that never gets old. I tried and tried, I just can’t get myself to care about Hublot watches. But, in the interest of journalistic integrity, I’ll run through all the thing they announced at Watches & Wonders. Hublot has partnered up with artist Takashi Murakami to create a series of watches that you can only own if you buy an NFT. Of course Hublot would release an NFT. They first came out with 13 watches, now they announce the other 12 models.
• Last year, as part of its novelties for 2022, Hublot unveiled the Square Bang collection, which takes the core aesthetic of its flagship Big Bang series and transforms it into a model with a square-shaped case. Now the Hublot Square Bang Unico Sapphire brings a full transparent sapphire case to the line.
• There’s also a new Square Bang in black ceramic.
• They have also upped the ante on exotic materials with a full carbon integrated bracelet for the new Hublot Big Bang Integrated Tourbillon Full Carbon priced at CHF120,000.

The Hamilton Wandering Earth II Is A Limited And Off-The-Wall Chinese Movie Tie-In With A More Tame Version For The Rest Of Us

• This is a watch was not introduced at Watches&Wonders, but announced right before it, so I decided to include it here. Hamilton has great ties with the movie industry, popping up all over the place - most notably as one of the major plot devices in Nolan’s Interstellar. Most recently, Hamilton has worked with the Chinese production of the sequel to their hyper successful sci fi hit Wandering Earth, and the watch Brand is putting out two special edition models for fans of the movie. The first is a transparent plastic-cased regulator style piece, making an appearance in the movie itself. Powered by Hamilton’s H-12 calibre, a development of the ETA 2825-2, its black and white dial variants will be produced in very limited numbers of only 122 per colorway. However, this watch will be available only in mainland China.
• For the rest of us, Hamilton modified their Jazzmaster Thinline and gave it the same Solar System-inspired dial relief that can be found on the resin-cased piece. The watch comes with a black or white dial, with bright red hands. The case is 40mm and only 7mm thick. To get this thin at such a low price don’t expect a mechanical movement - it’s powered by the ETA 980.163, a quartz movement with a height of only 2.2mm. The special edition will be available from March 2023 worldwide at CHF 635 without tax.

The Louis Erard Excellence Marqueterie Is Likely Your Cheapest Way To A Handmade Marquetry Dial, If You Can Get It

• Another piece announced over the weekend before W&W. Louis Erard has quickly become known for its democratising approach to offering traditional métiers d’art to a broader public. That’s why nobody gasped in surprise that their latest model features an exquisite handmade dial using wood marquetry to depict an abstract cubist pattern. Handmade by artisan Bastien Chevalier, the 99 limited edition Excellence Marqueterie comes under EUR 4,000. The case is 42mm, 12.5mm thick and it’s powered by a Sellita SW261-1 automatic calibre with its customised Louis Erard rotor, but that’s less important in this watch - the chequerboard dial is completely hand made and each colour is sourced from a different kind of wood – the three shades of blue are applied to tulip tree wood, while the grey-stained areas are made of willow burl. Each cut has to be precise to a tenth of a millimetre to ensure composition without gaps. When you put so much work into the dial, of course there are no numerals on it and time is indicated by the signature blued fir tree hands of Louis Erard. The watch is limited to 99 pieces and retails for CHF 3,900 (excl. tax). At the time of writing they are still some for sale, so go and buy this now as it will the cheapest way you can get such a dial.

De Bethune are releasing its 31st in-house calibre in the DB Eight Chronograph Monopusher At An Eyewatering Price

• The first watch of De Bethune, the DB1, was a classic two-register chronograph with a mono pusher architecture. And following this tradition, the brand is now releasing DB Eight, a watch that pays tribute to the very elegant watch but, of course, with a twist. The 42.4mm case is made of polished titanium with ogive-shaped lugs and a very thin profile of 9.2mm, while the dial has Breguet numerals, blued hands and two different hand-guilloche patterns. Here comes the twist, with the unusual display for the chronograph function. The DB Eight appears first as a time-only watch with two seconds hand. But it’s not. Hours and minutes are in the center, and the rest is devoted to the Chrono, with a central seconds and a 60-minute sub-dial. The chronograph is actuated by the crown, which serves for winding, adjusting and starting the chrono. Inside the case is the hand-wound, in-house calibre DB3000. The brand’s 31st movement and a new development, it’s also the 4th monopusher chronograph conceived by Denis Flageollet, following the DB1, DB8 and Maxichrono. Price is set at CHF 85,000.

The Byrne GyroDial Zero Is Very Funky, Very 70s. Very Futuristic And Very Cool

• Not a W&W release, but very cool. Numerals on a dial are a thing of personal preference. Some like Roman, others Arabic. I prefer just markers. But what if you like all three but want to wear just one watch? Then get the Gyrodial, a watch from the new brand Byrne, where the markers rotate every 24 hours to change their apperance. To change its face on a daily basis, the Byrne GyroDial features cubes at 3, 6, 9 and 12 displaying digits or markers, each making a jump every day (at midnight or midday, depending on how you’ve set your watch) or on-demand via the crown. The latest version of the Byrne GyroDial, the Zero, no longer features a dial and exposes the magic tricks of its mechanism. With its monochromatic look, the Gyrodial feels more modern, industrial, and technical. The Byrne GyroDial relies on the automatic calibre 5555, developed and assembled with Le Temps Manufacture, a movement maker based in Fleurier, which works behind the scene for some of the greatest names in the industry. The watch comes in the brand’s distinctive case. Its cushion shape is enhanced by taut lines, a curved profile and a round bezel opening. Measuring 41.7mm in diameter, it is made out of grade 5 titanium with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces. The Byrne GyroDial Zero comes in two versions: Rhodium Silver or Black Rhodium, on a leather or rubber strap. The price is set at EUR 17,500.

...wait, haven't I heard that before?
Yeah, this story's most incredible part is how I basically saw it all coming and yet was variously too much of a niceguy (briefly) or too powerless (far longer) to stop any of it. I've been a lurker here for a while, also having watched videos from the various YouTubers who dub posts from this sub, so I knew what signs to look for, and they were there from the moment I heard the That Guy in this story talk for the first time. As a note, all of this boiled over a few months ago and I have been busy with a new job and the related move and have just now gotten the time to actually post this.
The game in question was a Pathfinder game over roll20, in a homebrew universe and with houserules in play. The houserules were never an issue, though, because the GM had an avenue of redress, that being the chat channel in the game's discord server where players could voice concerns and the players could vote. If a majority of the players were on board, the rule would change. Very early on in the game I got the GM to get rid of critical fumbles (a particular sore spot of mine in RPGs when used as a house rule; not particularly relevant to this story as to why, but suffice to say everyone was on board) using this method. This fact will be relevant later, as our That Guy was not particularly keen on hearing others' opinions.
When I joined this game it was just myself and about 3 other players (I think; this is a while ago). The GM was a middle-aged guy who tried to be nice but had several screws loose (and a few more had already fallen out). It wasn't as obvious at first, though, since at the time we didn't really have any problems for the GM to lose his mind addressing.
One of the big things this GM's game had going for it was that players could bring in exotic stuff and use it as long as the GM okayed it. My character was an elf wizard with the Fey Creature template (I used Sidhe to describe his race) and his stupidly high INT was balanced out by his laughably low STR and mediocre CON. He had some DR, and was rather slippery, but if you got your hands on him he would die pretty fast. In every sense of the word, he was a glass cannon, which I thought fit the faerie aesthetic quite well. Our other PCs were variously an orc barbarian, a Gathlain ranger (Gathlains are basically Pathfinder's Killoren for any D&D-only folks out there), and a ratfolk (I think; I forget the exact name of the race) bard. Importantly clerics were extremely rare in the world's lore, as the gods had all but abandoned the place. Fun.
As the party was now we completed an adventure culminating in finding a super important book, having it be stolen by some drow queen, then getting it back again, which was neat. Then the GM decided we didn't have enough players and started looking for more using the LFG feature on Roll20. The first player to join, whom I can't recall much about, ghosted after a session or two. Typical for people on roll20. The next, however, was the That Guy whose persistent existence in the campaign was to be its downfall.
This person had "Campaign Wrecker" written all over his face. Obsession with foxes of the anime variety to the point of calling them "floofy potatoes" and being unable to stop talking about them; Naruto ninja homebrew of unknown origin that makes pun-pun almost look kind of tame; homebrew fey kitsune race (despite PF having kitsune already built in) with ridiculous stats; spotlight-hogging in-game BS some of which wasn't even game related; et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. This player's character was a ridiculous do-everything broken abomination of homebrew nonsense that basically screams "I am the reason a lot of GMs just don't allow homebrew" whose name was Solice[sic] and whose story was "I am the chosen one of the fox people." Yes, that's correct; they couldn't even spell solace correctly and had a main-character backstory that would make Kirito blush.
After a few sessions of people constantly complaining about this character's overpowered BS, the player came back with another fox who was her daughter, named Luna (I guess a heavens theme? Dunno really) who was just as overpowered as the original. During this time, some other players joined, at least one of which was an IRL friend of this person and we had to split the group into two, one running sessions directly after the other each week, simply because there were too many players and this GM was just unable to tell the That Guy here "no." Also around this time was the point where I (along with a couple other players) built new characters with higher optimization because we felt we couldn't keep up with our That Guy's homebrew (or that of the other players the That Guy had brought in, which I think was also his homebrew). At this point I was already trying to voice concerns to the GM about this player, but I think I was too subtle about it, even though other players told me they had been doing the same. Instead of doing anything smart the GM tried giving this That Guy Co-GM powers (!) which went about how you'd expect.
All of this finally came to a head when this player tried to overhaul the already-existing crafting mechanics in Pathfinder with his own nonsensical and barely-even-fleshed-out rules without any of the other players' input. When the other players asked him what he was trying to do, and to maybe describe it, he dodged the questions with some noncommittal BS ("I can't write it all down!") and wouldn't take any advice, feedback, or constructive criticism at all. We managed to get the GM to step in after a lot of forceful talking-to, and this player settled for running side sessions when the GM was too busy to run a session, to "test their mechanics" (which really just amounted to essentially OVA episodes of our characters fighting a monster in completely unrelated contexts to get some random materials while the That Guy's character and his friend's sidekick character really got to hog all the spotlight). I tried to salvage the situation by suggesting maybe we run something else during those off-weeks at some point. That Guy interpreted this as volunteering to run a session during the next week (which I couldn't even make, because I had a special event that time) and had the audacity to issue an everyone ping happily announcing I would be running a session at the exact time when my special event was starting. This was the last straw.
The next session was a kind of muddled mess of players all arguing the various reasons why we didn't want That Guy in the group anymore. After a few hours of the GM trying to salvage things peacefully, he eventually gave and kicked That Guy from the group, but not before That Guy went into the roll20 room and deleted everyone's characters due to salt (GM had forgotten to revoke That Guy's Co-GM access). This surprised everyone other than me and one other player who had been temporarily kicked from the discord a few weeks earlier for "arguing with the GM" when he tried to tell That Guy that he was out of line.
The next week we tried to start over, but that amounted to GM railroading all of our characters into a city center where we all got "cursed" (no save) which just meant we all took a -2 to all ability scores. No interesting dilemmas, no sort of unusual compulsions, just a boring -2 to all stats. Everyone voiced concerns, and though session was over we continued to talk about it in the game's discord. I came back the next week to find out the GM had somewhat relented and made it -2 to only 2 stats. When I countered that a -2 to a stat with no save and no real resolving condition was not OK, the GM kicked me from the game with a slight rambling rant about how my arguing was annoying him when I was not the only player voicing any concerns about this. A week later I heard from one of the other players that the game had fizzled, since the GM had just had enough — an extremely boring and anticlimactic ending to a hectic and frustrating story we all should have seen coming.
Anyway, I probably missed a few bits here and there but that's the gist of it. Hopefully this can be a lesson to anyone who thinks it's fine to ignore these red flags. Better no game than a bad game, after all, even if foresight isn't nearly as clear as hindsight.

CHAPTER 4
Kate was finally starting to feel ever-so-slightly better.
…Ok, not better per se, but at least she was feeling slightly less awful overall.
…
…At least physically. Definitely not so much mentally or emotionally, but-
…Look, the point is, an improvement’s an improvement, alright?
It certainly hadn’t been easy. It had taken many refilled bottles of water, just as many assisted walks to the bathroom (another thankfully universal constant among sapient bipeds) to… process said water, a quick shower (before which she made it clear that if Y’ggdrasog so much as looked at her while she was undressed or entered the room while in the act itself, it would end VERY badly for him) in which she only just barely kept herself upright by clutching the bars mounted to the wall in the shower stall for dear life as she sat in the chair he provided her, changing back into her now clean, dry, and warm clothes (god only knows how he managed to get off all the grime and blood that quickly), and (FINALLY) falling asleep for 17 uninterrupted hours.
…She was, of course, still reeling from everything that had happened in the past few days. Be it her unexpectedly benevolently-motivated alien abduction, or-
She shuddered, reflexively running her good hand over her injured arm.
…Or other things.
Other things that she was not going to think about.
She glanced over at Y’ggrasog, who was currently sitting in a chair at her bedside, asleep. He had barely left her side for anything, save for waiting outside the bathroom and fetching endless refills of water for her. She watched as the glowing growths lining his chest and face shifted colors, seemingly at random.
A small smile graced her face. Now that she wasn’t feverish, bleeding, dehydrated, hypothermic, delirious with exhaustion and running on pure adrenaline whilst fearing for her life, he didn’t look all that intimidating anymore.
Sure, he was almost eight feet tall, and yeah, he looked like a giant glowing bug-chameleon-monster-thing, and she couldn’t deny that his claws could likely flay a person alive if he was sufficiently motivated-
…Ok, he was still pretty intimidating. Still, he did save her life, so that definitely earned him some brownie points in her book. Plus, it was very obvious that if he actually wanted to hurt or kill her, he could have done so with ease long before now.
She couldn’t help but grin as he made a cute little chitter-hissing noise in his sleep, his mandibles twitching back and forth while his glow shifted shades. It was almost like watching a sapient Christmas tree wrapped in strings of lights that cycled through different festive colors. It reminded her of her childhood, when her family-
The smile departed her face as quickly as it came.
No. Stop that thought right there. We are NOT thinking about it.
…That was another thing she appreciated; he didn’t pry. It was very obvious that he wanted to ask her about her injuries based on how many times she caught him looking at her throat or arm, opening his mouth and then closing it and looking away before he thought she noticed.
Hopefully, he never would. That particular conversation could wait; preferably until the end of the universe.
She closed her eyes and sank back down into her bedding. As she pulled at the blanket and tried to shift into a more comfortable position, she let out a long, shaky sigh- that abruptly ended in a loud groan, as she felt a sharp pang of pain run through her bad arm in protest for her daring to do such a thing as move.
The sound was enough to wake Y’ggdrasog, who, startled out of his sleep, flailed a bit and spoke in a frantic, disoriented voice.
<“No! I was just trying to save- …h-her…“>
He groggily looked around, his three eyes all facing in different directions for a moment before finally focusing themselves as he turned to meet Kate’s gaze. She slowly raised an eyebrow.
<“I- um… H-hi Kate. Sorry, uh- bad dream. D-do you need anything?”>
She stared at him for another few seconds before her mouth crinkled up at the corners into a smile.
“I suppose a gallon’s dose or so of painkillers wouldn’t go unappreciated.”
She winced, running her fingers over her chapped lips.
“…Or failing that, more water.”
His mandibles arranged themselves into what he had repeatedly assured her was his species’ equivalent of a grin, rising from his chair and grabbing her empty glass water bottle.
<“Well, I can certainly do one of those things…”>
Kate smirked. “The painkillers?” she asked, sarcastic optimism dripping from her voice.
<”Guess again,”> he called over his shoulder as he opened the door and walked down the hallway before returning shortly afterward and holding her now-filled water bottle out to her.
She put on her best faux-pouty face, leaning over to reach for the bottle. “Darn. Guess I’ll just have to manage with-”
Kate suddenly grimaced, grabbing at her wounded arm with a sharp inhalation of breath and doubling over from pain. Y’ggdrasog’s bioluminescence immediately shifted to a blood-red of concern, eyes wide.
<”Are you ok?! I- Is there anything I can do to-”>
“I’m FINE!” Kate snapped at him through her clenched teeth. “I’m- I just moved wrong, and… Oh, forget it…”
Her good hand gripped the nanobot-cast hard enough to bleach her knuckles bone-white, wincing as her arm throbbed. There was a tense silence for a few moments, the only sound being Kate’s labored breathing as she waited for the needle-sharp pains to finally subside, which mercifully did after another few seconds.
Kate slowly leaned back against the headboard, sweat dripping from her face. She glanced at Y’ggdrasog’s worried face before looking away, her eyes facing the floor. She closed them and shook her head in frustration before speaking in a strained voice.
“......I- …I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have lashed out at you just now. …Debilitating pain or no.”
He gingerly sat down on the bed next to her, passing her the water bottle as he went, which she accepted with a grateful nod.
<”It’s ok. I’m sorry too... I wish I could do more for you, but we- the Collective, I mean- don’t know quite enough about human physiology yet to determine what the correct doses of painkillers and other medicine would be safe to dispense you, or how often to give them. I- …I don’t want to poison you by accident via overdose and have you be rendered comatose, or- …worse…”>
Kate wiped the sweat from her brow and took the lid off the bottle.
“It’s alright. I get it, ok?”
She tipped the bottle back, chugging the entire thing down in one go, relief spreading over her face at the sensation of it passing through her parched throat. Once it was emptied, she closed the lid and held it back out to him.
“…Hell, it’s not like I know anything about your species either.”
Y’ggdrasog took the bottle, rolling it over in his hands with a thoughtful expression.
<”...How about this? You ask me any questions you want about my biology, and I can fill you in. The Collective already knows a fair bit about your species, so it’s only fair that you get caught up too. …Especially with just how many species there are in the Collective; you all have quite a lot of catching up to do.”>
“Uh- alright, sure. The thing I’ve been wondering the most about is the… Well...”
Kate gestured vaguely at his body as a whole.
“The whole glowing- …thing… That you do. What causes it, and what’s it for?”
Y’ggdrasog nodded.
<“I figured that’d be the first one. It’s usually the first thing people ask if they’ve never seen one of my kind before.”>
He gestured at the nodules lining his face and chest.
<”My people are known as lumigogs, and these little glowing growths have been a staple of our species stretching back for millions of years now. See, some distant genetic ancestor of ours somehow formed a symbiotic, mutualistic relationship with a type of algae from our homeworld.
We provided a safe place for it to exist, within our very bodies. The outer layers of chitinous hide my species possesses was, and continues to be, very durable in comparison to the soft tissue of the algae itself. In exchange, it provides what small amount of excess nutrients it can spare via photosynthesis.”>
Kate gazed at the glowing growths as he spoke, intrigued.
“So you have tiny little helpful organisms living inside you... Huh. I guess humans have something similar with the helpful bacteria in our digestive system, and-“
She suddenly paused, her eyes widening.
“Wait- back up. Did you just say photosynthesis? Like a plant? …Are you saying you can survive purely off of sunlight?!”
<”...Well, technically yes, for very short periods of time. Though I’d probably have to be standing in direct sunlight and be entirely still, preferably lying down, so as to conserve energy. Even then, I’d only just barely gain more calories than I lose. Not to mention that as the photosynthesis essentially produces pure sugars and nothing else, it obviously isn’t sustainable for one’s long-term health.”>
“So, how does the sunlight even reach it if it’s under all that- …what did you call it, chitin?”
<”The chitin is slightly thinner above the algal pockets, and lacks the pigments that the rest of my hide contains to protect from solar radiation. It’s still slightly less efficient than if the algae was exposed to the air, but the protection of our hide clearly more than made up for it from an evolutionary standpoint.”>
As Kate listened, the algae’s glow continued to switch colors as she watched.
“So then… why the glow?”
<“The algae my species bonded with all those millions of years ago was bioluminescent. Over the years, as our kind evolved to be more and more intelligent, the algae slowly ended up bonding to our central nervous systems and interfacing with the portion of our brains that are in charge of emotion- specifically, they have evolved to change colors to display what emotion we are currently feeling.
For example, when we are worried or stressed, the algae turns a bright crimson; when we are content, they shift hues to a warm pink. When we are confused they shift to a light blue, and so on. It serves to aid communication amongst the members of my species, as we can tell at a glance how anyone within sight of us is feeling.”>
Kate continued staring at the glowing growths for a few more moments in disbelief, before suddenly snorting in amusement.
“So you’re telling me you have literal mood lighting?”
Y’ggdrasog paused for a second before chuckling, glowing a bright sunflower yellow as he did so.
<”I suppose when you put it like that, it does seem a tad silly. But it’s as natural to me as your species’ obvious propensity for social interaction via the sheer variety of facial expressions you’re capable of.
The carapace that serves to protect my species and the algae from harm is much more rigid and far less pliant than your skin, so we are unable to visually express ourselves nearly as easily as humans- and most other sapient species among the Collective, for that matter- due to it simply being too rigid for intricate facial movements that convey emotion. Our bioluminescence serves to make up for that deficit in face-to-face communication.”>
“Alright, I suppose that makes sense, given how important communication is in a social species.”
She paused and looked him up and down.
“…So… is that why you-“
She blushed a bit.
“…Why you’re, uh- never, um, wearing a shirt…?”
Y’ggdrasog chuckled in amusement at her obvious embarrassment.
<“Well, let me ask you this: Do you feel you could trust someone in a conversation if they, say, purposefully turned around and faced away from you before speaking? Culturally, that would be the equivalent of wearing such garb among my people. Purposefully obscuring one’s algae nodules among others is considered impolite, or even a taboo of sorts.”>
Kate’s brow furrowed in confusion.
“But what if you get cold, or you need to do something that required protective gear?”
He nodded, anticipating the question.
<“If I require such clothing or equipment for protection from the elements or other such practical purposes I will gladly don what is necessary, as would the vast majority of lumigogs. Only the most… well, what you might call “traditionalist” among my kind would be foolish enough to risk the safety of their bodies for the sake of pride. However, the vast majority of lumigogs, myself included, find that it just feels… wrong, to wear such things otherwise. So I stick to wearing a waist wrap and nothing else most of the time.”>
Kate cocked her head to the side.
“…Nothing else?”
He shrugged.
<“Well, yes; beyond the feeling of taboo, practicality plays a large part. Shoes of a design similar to your own are essentially impossible due to the long talons the universe saw fit to gift my people with. The closest analogue for footwear my kind usually wear would be something akin to what you call “sandals,” and even those are a challenge most of the time so I rarely wear them.”>
He raised a finger, anticipating the next question that Kate had just opened her mouth to ask.
<“…And no, we can’t just trim the talons down; they are full of nerve endings that provide tactile feedback on whatever it is we walk on, so it would be very painful to even attempt such a thing.”>
Kate paused, her expression betraying her confusion.
“Why would you ever need nerve endings in them? I can’t even imagine what it would feel like having those inside my nails…”
<“Well, you may have guessed this already due to our connection with the algae, but my people dwelled on the shorelines of our planet for the most part. The algae helped sustain us, but we obviously couldn’t survive off of sunlight alone. We maintained what fungal crops we could in the sandy soil for nutrients, and we could use the claws on our hands to help climb the giant fungal pods and lichen growths near the shorelines. But our main source of protein were the various burrowing species of the sand, analogous to what you call “crustaceans” and “mussels”- and the nerve endings that evolved to dwell within our talons helped us find them.
While our trinocular vision helped us spot disturbances on the surface of the sand, we also needed to be able to sense the slightest movements and vibrations below us to detect them if they had burrowed too far for their subtle movements to disturb the surface, and the extra nerve endings were invaluable in that regard.”>
He looked down at his talons, idly clicking them against the floor a couple times.
<“Even if there was a way to somehow remove or deactivate the nerve endings- which spirits know, I wish I could some days if I have to walk across particularly cold or uncomfortable flooring, or reapply the enamel my species uses to protect them over the long-term- I still couldn’t risk removing them. The talons also serve to help us balance, and are as necessary as, say, the long tails that act as counterweights to certain other Collective species. Without them, I would likely fall over at least once if I were to do so much as try and walk from one end of this room to another.
Thus, cutting them or filing them down is a big no-no, and as a result, no shoes. …And for that matter-“>
He gestured to the razor-sharp points of the talons.
<“With how sharp these are, it certainly makes it nearly impossible to wear anything as form-fitting as what your species call “underwear.” They’d either be torn to shreds or otherwise take such a long time to put on or take off while trying to not tear them to shreds that most lumigogs don’t even attempt to bother with such things in the first place.”>
Kate’s face suddenly reddened a shade or two, and she just as suddenly became very interested in a particular square centimeter or so of the nearest wall.
“I, uh… alrighty then.”
Y’ggdrasog laughed upon seeing her expression.
<“Oh, worry not; both of our species do share some facets of the concept of modesty, as do almost the entirety of the species in the Collective. I wear a thinner, redundant waist wrap underneath the first, as well as no less than three belts to keep them both secured. So as long as you don’t, say, look up while I’m climbing a ladder or some such, you should be alright- if that’s any consolation.”>
He tilted his head to the side and playfully winked the rightmost two of his three eyes at her. She couldn’t help but laugh at the strange spectacle, finally allowing the awkward tension to dissipate.
“…I suppose it is.”
She paused as she looked down at his wrap.
“Speaking of, that’s another thing I’ve been wondering for a while now. Your waist-wrap, what’s it made out of? Because it looks… well, rather disturbingly like human skin, if I’m being honest.”
Y’ggdrasog glanced down at it, then back at her. He emitted a faint red glow, and his voice grew nervous.
<“Do you not like it? …Oh, I knew this was a bad idea- I was just trying to do something fun for the sake of tradition, but it’s always a risk when meeting a new-”>
He paused, taking a deep breath.
<“Sorry, I just- let me start over. …You see, my people have a tradition of sorts that I learned of a while back, but very few remember it because it comes up so rarely. Diplomats of my people that arrive at first contact scenarios have sometimes worn garb that emulates the outer appearance of the new species in question, in whatever form that outermost membrane takes.”>
Kate’s eyes narrowed in confusion.
“…Are you honestly telling me lumigogs genuinely think it’s a good idea to show up to a meet and greet dressed like you’ve flayed a bunch of the new species to use as clothing…?”
<“It is symbolic, meant to display a desire for our species to welcome the other species into a new coexistence with one another. It conveys- or at least, it is intended to convey- that we already see the other species as our kin, down to the materials that make up our very bodies. He winced.
<“It’s- well, to borrow a turn of phrase from your own people, it has been “a mixed bag.” As more and more first contacts occurred, it became less and less popular. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if none of the diplomats from my people currently floating alongside us are following it. …I just have a bit of a passion for my people’s history, so I figured it would be a fun idea, but if you find it offensive-“>
Kate shook her head.
“No, no; it’s fine. It’s definitely unexpected, but at least it makes for a nice conversation starter.”
Y’ggdrasog relaxed.
<“Oh! Good. Good…”>
There was a slightly awkward silence for a few moments, but Kate smirked as a new thought randomly popped into her head.
“ …Y’know, modesty and weird fashion choices aside, the whole “no shirt no shoes” thing would probably bar you from most shops on Earth. …And besides that, it would guarantee that you would suck at poker. You’d probably have to wear a full opaque- …I dunno, toga or something, if you wanted to keep the skirt theme going, plus a mask of some sort, just to have any hope of winning.”
Y’ggdrasog cocked his head to the side, his glow shifting to a confused baby-blue.
<“What is “poker?””>
“Oh, it’s just a human game where you- well, explaining it would take a while, but the important part is that you need to hide your emotions to increase your odds of winning.”
Y’ggdrasog paused, his glow shifting to a pensive purple.
<”A game of hiding your emotions…? Hm. Many of my people would find that idea distasteful.”>
Now it was Kate’s turn to cock her head to the side in confusion.
“What do you mean? Does your species never lie to one another?”
<”No, to tell an untruth is simple. …To actually fool anyone, however, is quite difficult, at least when done in person. See, we always glow a bright, vivid blue when lying. It’s a similar shade to when we are confused, for in a way, we are; we’re confusing our own emotions by stating something we know for a fact to be false as if it were the truth.
As for lying in person, only those who simply do not know they are telling an untruth are capable of doing so, for they believe what they say to be the truth. However, they are easily forgiven- after all, ignorance of one’s own ignorance is no crime.
…True, it is easy to lie when one does so, say, over an audio-only long-distance call, or through the written word; but it is seen as a grave offense among my people, and has been more and more stigmatized over the millennia- doubly so once we entered the Collective.
“Why’s that?”
<”Lumigogs cannot help but broadcast our feelings to those around us… But on the galactic stage, we are alone in this. It is a- oh, what was that expression your species uses, uh- …right, “a double edged sword.”
We must be honest and up-front in our dealings with other races, because we essentially do not have a choice. It would be foolish, fruitless, and an insult to the intelligence of our fellows to attempt to do otherwise. Thus, culturally speaking, it has always been, and likely will always be drilled into our young to help our people develop a reputation for reliability and honesty among the various peoples of the Collective, but it also opens up the obvious threat of the other peoples of the galaxy exploiting this.
Thus, it is a policy amongst my people that anyone from any space-faring species- even our own- that would lie to us in such things as business dealings, politics and the like, is permanently anathema to our race as a whole, and we make that VERY well-known.”>
“So, what, you just all give them the cold shoulder or something?”
<“No, it is much more serious than that. If one is proven to have deliberately lied to gain some financial or political advantage over our people as a whole- or even another individual- they are entered into a vast, millenia-old database we maintain, a “black book” of sorts. If an individual ever enters that database, they are essentially no longer able to function in lumigog society. Any business owned by lumigogs will not engage with them or any organization they represent, nor will our various governments.”>
“…No offense, but that sounds like it would be easy to abuse over- I dunno, a petty grudge or something.”
<“None taken, that’s a very understandable concern. However, that database is the single most heavily overseen and regulated of all of the matters of my people, requiring ironclad proof of the wrongs they have committed against us- not to mention it being a long, tedious, and arduous process to enter them into it in the first place.”>
Kate pondered this for a second, before a small smile graced her features.
“You know, despite the drawbacks when interacting with other species, I almost wish humanity had something like the algae too. The worst among humanity probably lie more often than they tell the truth.”
Not being able to lie without those around you knowing it would encourage always being genuine to others, and also to who you are as a person. You could feel safe in day to day interactions, and on a bigger scale, it would prevent any corrupt would-be despots of the world rising to power and- and…”
She trailed off, her smile disappearing even quicker than it came as looked out the small viewport at the planet below them. Her voice was somber and hollow as she continued.
“…And ruining everything…”
Y’ggdrasog frowned, concerned.
<“Is something bothering you?”>
Kate didn’t respond. Though she continued staring at the planet below it was as though she were gazing at nothing in particular, her thoughts a galaxy away, before shaking her head and letting out the breath she didn’t realize she had been holding. She turned to him.
“S-sorry, did- did you say something? I got kinda, um… lost in my own head there for a second.”
She let out a nervous, forced laugh.
Y’ggdrasog’s mouth opened again, but then closed as he thought better of it.
<”...Nevermind. It isn’t important.”>
He glanced at the clock only visible to him in his implant interface, winced, and got up from the bed, motioning toward the doorway.
<“Listen, I’m going to let you get some more rest for the time being, alright?”>
She nodded, her expression still troubled.
“Ok… I’ll call for you if I need anything.”
<“You do that. I just need to check on a few things...”>
He walked out the door, sliding it shut behind him. On each side of the door, unknown to one another, they both let out sighs for very different reasons.
Y’ggdrasog half-walked, half-jogged down the corridor toward his room, his bioluminescence turning more and more blood-red as he got closer to the door. He had been so concerned with the human and her needs that he hadn’t checked in with what the rest of the fleet were up to in almost an entire day.
Maybe- just maybe, this whole situation, whatever it was, had been resolved. If so, he could surreptitiously get her back to the planet surface and move on with all this. He’d have saved a life, she would be grateful but safe with her people again (and sworn to secrecy, because hey, I saved your life, so please please please don’t ruin this for me), they could move on with their lives, do whatever needed doing on both ends to help uplift humanity, and all would be well.
He rushed to his terminal, booted it up, and…!
Nothing.
Not a single new message since the communication blackout.
He refreshed the incoming communications page a few times and checked his connection to the network just to be absolutely sure, but it was all in working order.
He stared at the screen in silent disbelief for a second before closing his eyes, sighing, and slumping forward until his head rested on the desk with the soft tink of chitin on metal. He let out a weak groan, muffled by the desk.

He slowly raised his head, clicking his mandibles pensively as he became lost in thought.
If he wanted to find out more of what may be the source of this mysterious delay, he may have to ask Kate directly, but that was a risk he didn’t want to take. If she was injured as a result of, say, some sort of massive disaster on her planet that somehow ended up complicating their uplifting, asking her might bring up a lot of painful memories, or cause her to want to leave his care early and go home.
Except- well, he couldn’t do that.
He had no way to deliver her safely back to her people without giving himself away, and- spirits above, he certainly had zero intentions of holding her captive!
He sighed in grim resignation. He’d waited for answers for over a week already. And though he hated- no, loathed, admitting it… He could wait a little more.

I ordered items online in a YouTube advertisement. Never heard a word from company but they kept my money. Can’t find company to follow up. Update: I also ordered a bunch of cheap clothes from another company that advertised on YouTube around the same time (US-MATSSCTX.COM), but they actually sent confirmations via email and answered my inquiries, providing two separate tracking numbers. They managed to string me along for the last two months. The last time I checked the tracking it said the package has been delivered… Three hours in the future. But that’s not all.
