2023.04.01 14:44 swcollings My new Wolf induction cooktop is unusable because of the high-frequency screaming
| (I'm reposting this because my previous post left out that it was induction, I couldn't add the image, and I couldn't edit.) The red line shown below is the peak-hold FFT of my voice talking very loudly directly into the phone, plus the spike of my cooktop running full-blast at just under 20 kHz measured at a normal working distance from the cooktop, maxing out at eight decibels louder than the highest frequency of my voice. Seriously, WTF? I used to design power electronics for a living, and I am gobsmacked that they didn't use a frequency outside the human hearing range. It gave my wife a headache, my daughter asked me to turn it off from half-way across the room, and I can barely use the thing long enough to run this test. I had a new piece of granite cut specifically to use this cooktop. Now I have to return the cooktop. As far as I'm concerned, Wolf owes me for any additional cutting I have to do, plus my time cleaning up the dust again. https://preview.redd.it/euhi4h48p9ra1.jpg?width=617&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2535d7269f54cdfd94e394b3bdbaa38e5d35e49f submitted by swcollings to Appliances [link] [comments] |
2023.04.01 14:43 MurderIsRelevant RAC Acceptance Now - a furniture finance scam you need to be aware of
Last year I went to Rooms To Go, and used their Acceptance Now side lending company that has a location WITHIN the stor, to purchase two couches. I was assured that if I kept up with the payments, which are $147.55 bi weekly ($295.05 a month), that I would have them payed off in six months.
Well, I have been keeping up payments and it has now been seven months. I did the math and figured it was about to be over. Just to make sure I called them. Turns out in total I had to make 44 payments. Half of them are left. So it is about to be another year of paying for these couches, which will end up being in total around $6492 I will have spent on two couches.
I will never EVER use a loan company, especially not one in the very store I am buying from. I am tired of being scammed. The same thing happened with our solar power installation. I'm done (although the solar wasn't me, it was the guy I live with. He got one of those door to door salesmen stupidly signed for an 80k loan, plus the 7k they didn't tell us about for the taxes. Boy,what a wonderful surprise).
The reason I brought this to this sub instead of the other big one is because I figured poor people will more often go for loans and are more vulnerable to scams, fraud, and nickel and diming. So don't sign up with RAC Acceptance Now. They can probably be found around Rooms To Go, Rent A Center, and Aarons.

2023.04.01 13:59 rikuzero1 Global exclusive Volt-Fortitude simulacra Yuno (subject to change)
| https://preview.redd.it/9hczpvpkg9ra1.png?width=646&format=png&auto=webp&s=1fe00d8b0c6ab9f5d34d5699e5a41667afed6dcf ==Simulacra=== Type: Volt - Fortitude Simulacra: Yuno Weapon: Proteus -Shatter: 10.50 -Charge: 14.00 -Attack 18 -HP 1165 -Crit 14 ==Skill== - Fortitude Resonance: Cry of Weakness: Holding down the skill continually taunts nearby enemies and deal bonus shatter damage for up to 3 seconds and applying 1 mark of Predation to each enemy every 0.5 seconds. Upon releasing the skill, a magnetic needle substitute is made for 2 seconds times the duration held plus 1 to which aggro is temporarily transferred until expiration. Enemies that attack the substitute are taunted and receive 0.1x reflected damage. Become invisible for 4 seconds or until the Wanderer attacks an enemy or the substitute expires. While invisible, movement speed is increased by 35%, dodges cover twice the distance in the same time, and the next attack that hits a target deals +100% shatter damage and weakens the target's ATK by 15% for 10 seconds. Cooldown: 5 seconds x duration held + 10 (Max 25s). - Non-Fortitude Resonance: Cry of Strength: Holding down the skill continually lowers aggro towards the Wanderer while dealing damage equal to 225% of ATK plus 12 per second for up to 3 seconds and applying 1 mark of Predation to each nearby enemy every 0.5 seconds. Upon releasing the skill, leap at the target with a horror beast claw, dealing dash attack damage equal to 418% of ATK plus 22 as a guaranteed crit with +30% crit damage and reducing the target's crit resistance by 5 levels for 10 seconds. Detonates any magnetic needle nodes touched by the attack independent of their cooldowns, each node dealing area damage equaling 76% of ATK plus 4, recovering 15 weapon charge per node detonated, and placing an additional node for 12 seconds. Cooldown: 2 seconds x duration held + 10 (Max 16s). - Predation: Per mark up to 5 marks, enemies have crit resistance lowered by 2 levels and for critical hits taken: receive 1% more shatter and have 2% reduced elemental resistance. The Wanderer's movement speed increases by 3% per nearby mark active, up to 5 marks. Marks decay at a rate of 1 every 5 seconds. ==Discharge== - Fortitude Resonance: Unbreakable Will: When weapon charge is full or Phantasia is triggered, switching to this weapon from another weapon removes all debuffs from the wielder and constructs a metal plate wall that stops projectiles for 5 seconds while dispersing magnetic needles into a ring which pulls in enemies towards the wall before scattering on the ground, reducing the movement speed of enemies within by 30% while dealing continuous damage equal to 76% of ATK plus 4 per second for 5 seconds with increased aggro generation. Damage immunity lasts 1.5 seconds while the skill is active (unavailable in Apex League). - Non-Fortitude Resonance: Revenger's Requiem: Quickly leap to the target and slash multiple times, dealing total damage equal to 580% of ATK plus 31 and scattering 3 magnetic needle nodes for 12 seconds, max 7 on the field. Each node can be detonated by any volt weapon's electrify effect upon becoming fully charged, each dealing area damage equal to 76% of ATK plus 2 and recovering 15 weapon charge for each node detonated. Node detonation cooldown: 5 seconds. Damage immunity lasts 1.5 seconds while the skill is active (unavailable in Apex League). 1\*: While wielding Proteus, dodge attack damage that also critically hits applies a Predation mark and deals +20% crit damage and +25% shatter. 2\*: Increase the current weapon's base ATK growth by 16%. 3\*: --Balance: For each mark of Predation active while wielding Proteus, dodging heals the Wanderer by 1% of max HP, reduces damage received by 1% for 3 seconds, and increases healing effect by 4% for 15 seconds. Cooldown: 10 seconds. --Fortitude: For each mark of Predation active, unleashing any skill or discharge heals the Wanderer by 1% of max HP and reduces damage taken by 2% for 5 seconds. Cooldown: 5 seconds. In addition, for each nearby mark of Predation active while wielding Proteus, a party member unleashing a skill heals the Wanderer by 1% of max HP. Cooldown: 5 seconds. --Attack: For each magnetic needle node detonated while wielding Proteus, heal the Wanderer by 1% of max HP. Cooldown: 10 seconds. --Benediction: For each magnetic needle node detonated, heal party members by 17.5% of ATK within triple the detonation radius and increases party ATK by 2% for 5 seconds for each mark of Predation active. --Only the highest stack of marks is counted. 4\*: Increase the current weapon's base HP growth by 32%. 5\*: Enemies receive 1% more damage dealt by the Wanderer for each mark of Predation. While wielding Proteus, restore 4 weapon charge points for each nearby mark of Predation active per second. Only the highest stack of marks is counted. 6\*: Increase Predation max to 7. In addition, increase Crit Rate by 1% and Crit Damage by 2% for each mark of Predation active. Only the highest stack of marks is counted. "Originally invented by Project Ark for testing on G2-U subjects to wield inhuman instincts by substituting missing limbs with electrically charged magnetic needles in their insane plan to elevate humanity, this Proteus has been modified to recharge mid-combat and utilize metal plates which can camouflage." ==Normal Attack== atk x5: While on the ground, attack 5 times. -First Attack: Deal damage equal to 56.6% of ATK plus 3. -Second Attack: Deal damage equal to 19.7% of ATK plus 1. -Third Attack: Deal damage equal to 30%% of ATK plus 2. -Fourth Attack: Deal damage equal to 47.1% of ATK plus 3. -Fifth Attack: Deal damage equal to 136.8% of ATK plus 7 and strongly suspend the target. jump + atk x3: While airborne, use normal attack to attack 3 times in a row in mid-air. -First Attack: Deal damage equal to 107.9% of ATK plus 6. -Second Attack: Deal damage equal to 114.0% of ATK plus 6. -Third Attack: Launch the enemy at a nearby target or at the ground below if there is none, creating a shockwave upon landing that deals area damage equal to 142.8% of ATK plus 8 and stunning targets for 1 second. If the enemy cannot be launched, instead deal damage equal to 172.1% of ATK plus 9 and recover 100 energy weapon charge. hold: Fortitude Resonance: Tap and hold normal attack to take a defensive stance for up to 3 seconds, reducing damage taken by 20% and recovering 10 weapon energy charge per 1% of max HP lost while held. Releasing the normal attack button while holding a direction performs a dodge covering twice the distance in the same time. Releasing before getting hit performs the dodge at no cost, constructs a substitute for 2 seconds to which all aggro is transferred until expiration, and the Wanderer becomes invisible for 2 seconds or until the Wanderer attacks an enemy. If a dodge cannot be performed, instead cast the standing version of this skill. Releasing the normal attack button without holding a direction unleashes an area attack that deals damage equal to 167.3% of ATK plus 9. Releasing before getting hit doubles the damage reduction, energy recharge, and shatter damage, while applying a 0.2x damage reflection to the area attack. hold: Non-Fortitude Resonance: Tap and hold normal attack to gather magnetic needle nodes on the field and place them in a line towards the target, each node dealing area damage equal to 38% of ATK plus 1 and refreshing their durations. This consumes 1 node. jump + hold: Tap and hold normal attack while airborne, or use normal attack while climbing, jumping backward, or using the Jetpack to trigger aerial branch attacks, to barrel downwards into the target with a horror beast form, dealing damage equal to 154.5% of ATK plus 8 damage, strongly suspending targets. The higher the altitude when triggering the attack, the greater the damage dealt, up to 600% damage. ==Dodge== dodge + atk: Tap normal attack during the short period after dodging. Let out a long and narrow projectile in sandworm form which penetrates the target and returns, dealing damage equal to 78.1% of ATK plus 4, and recovers HP and energy weapon charge proportional to total shatter damage dealt from critical hits. Restore up to 1 dodge if the attack shatters a target's shield. If Fortitude Resonance is activated and the Wanderer is invisible before attacking, taunt enemies hit. If Fortitude Resonance is not activated, detonate any magnetic needle nodes touched by the attack as if triggering electrify from fully charging a volt weapon, each node dealing area damage equaling 76% of ATK plus 4 and recovering 15 weapon charge per node detonated. ==Trait== - Sixth Sense(1.2k): For every 1 second you or your substitute is targeted by an enemy, gain a stack of Adaptation which reduces damage received by 2%, increases resistance for the element last damaged with by 4%, and makes critical hits ignore elemental resistance by 2%, per stack up to 3 stacks. For every 1.5 seconds not targeted, lose 1 stack. Unleashing a skill with Proteus grants 3 stacks of Adaptation. - Primal Instinct(4k): For every 1 second you or your substitute is targeted by an enemy, gain a stack of Adaptation which reduces damage received by 3%, increases resistance for the element last damaged with by 6%, and makes critical hits ignore elemental resistance by 3%, per stack up to 5 stacks. For every 1.5 seconds not targeted, lose 1 stack. While at 4 or more stacks, become immune to knockback on the ground and double the duration of Predation marks. Unleashing a skill with Proteus grants 5 stacks of Adaptation. ==Matrices== - 2-piece set: Increase Crit Rate by 5/6/7/8% and Crit Damage by 7/8/9/10%. Taunting an enemy reduces its crit resistance by 2/3/4/5 levels for 3 seconds. This Matrix's effects work in the off-hand slot, but only the set with the highest star rating will take effect. - 4-piece set: Increases speed of obtaining weapon charge by 12/13%/14%/15% plus 2% for each magnetic needle node on the field. For every 1% of max HP lost, recover 5 weapon energy charge. In addition, for every 200 weapon charge recovered, deal volt damage equal to 7/8/9/10% ATK to nearby enemies. This Matrix's effects work in the off-hand slot, but only the set with the highest star rating will take effect. ==Character Background== Log 1: Yuno, formerly known as Subject G2-U No.7, was born into the secret laboratory under Project Ark in the outskirts of Vera. On the surface, Project Ark aimed to conserve wildlife. Underneath, its true aim was to store the DNA of every creature into a human's to elevate humanity into the pinnacle of evolution and true apex of nature while obtaining the scientific freedom to exterminate all threatening species once stored. Comprised of 12 scientists and 36 miscellaneous staff, in secret they gave birth to 18 children to be used as the first generation test subjects. 12 designated G1-O subjects under the Overlay method of fusing animal parts to learn and integrate the DNA directly, and 6 designated G1-U under the Underlay method of injecting various substances such as blood and hormones to restructure the body instinctually as it grows. All G1-O subjects died, 4 of which died of surgical complications, 3 were hostile, and 2 were abducted by their defected parents and subsequently disposed of. 3 G1-U subjects died of poison-like symptoms and 3 survived with no apparent differences other than prominent hair growth and confused neurological behavior. Afterwards, 9 scientists and 28 staff remained, giving birth to the second generation of 16, 4 designated G2-O with significantly reduced fusions and 10 designated G2-U with varying degrees of raised injection levels and antibodies alongside the newly invented complementary equipment designed to wield prominent instinctive behavior in their intended form without physical complications, a fabric resembling a fur coat named Proteus. Proteus utilized magnetic needles attached to areas closest to the nervous system and used a battery to extend the instinct-induced neurological signals sent to the detachable needles to form substitutes for the missing limbs, taking from needle reserves located on the cuffs and collar when necessary. Of the 4 G2-O subjects, 2 couldn't move their fused limbs and were deemed failures, 1 became completely paralyzed and disposed of, and 1 showed remarkable success, becoming the focus of the project in preparation for G3-O. G2-O No.3 had little strength but had enhanced hearing and could pick up objects with his tail. Most of the G2-U subjects, however, showed hostility almost immediately after integrating enough with Proteus to form a weapon as if their minds were taken over by feral instincts and now had a fighting chance against their captors. Of the 10 G2-U's, 7 met their end this way, 2 were defiant but weak and thus kept until the final weeks of generation 2 to provide data for G3-U, and 1 strangely showed no signs of defiance nor reaction from Proteus. This was strange because G2-U No.7 received the strongest DNA injections. Because of his obedience, G2-U No.7 was allowed to work as manual labor while the project focused on G2-O No.3. What they didn't know was it wasn't that G2-U No.7 didn't possess the instincts he was given, it was that the first instinct he awakened to was one that let him foresee his death and adapt to the situation, becoming obedient and feigning weakness as well as internally mastering Proteus during each "failed" test. Eventually, G2-U No.7 developed enough affinity with Proteus to use his own hair and other metals as a substitute for the magnetic needles with or without Proteus, as long as they were connected by electricity. It was nearing the time in which the generation 3 phase of the project begins and G2-U No.7 could foresee the imminent death of generation 2. With each day he planted hidden hairs and metal plates in rooms, and once he had enough, he initiated his escape plan. First required getting G2-O No.3's cooperation. One night, G2-U No.7 tied together numerous strands of hair and with the small amount of electricity afforded to him with a night light he had innocently requested the week prior, he made this long thread travel through the air vents, as if it itself was a sandworm, into G2-O No.3's soundproofed room that he was almost never allowed to leave from, and constrict G2-O No.3's pinky until it dislocated. With this, G2-O No.3 would be taken out of his soundproofed room in the morning and put into the medical bay to treat his injury, and he can establish communication during the day he is tasked to clean the adjacent room. Whispering as to not be heard by security cameras, G2-U No.7 told him of their imminent death once generation 3 is born soon, and if he wants to prevent that, he has to follow through with a plan not yet disclosed. As the discussion is only one-way, agreement was decided on whether he lies to his escort by saying he could hear someone injured in the Proteus testing room as he's being escorted back. Evidently, the agreement was made. Just as G2-U No.7 heared footsteps toward that direction, he once again took out his long thread of hair, but this time he pretended to accidentally bump into the security camera while cleaning it, exposing the wires. With a lethal amount of electricity now, he quickly extended the thread across the room and into the hallway towards the Proteus testing room, reaching the door faster than the escort and connecting to the 2 strands of hidden hair on the sides of the door at neck height. As soon as the escort opened the door and tried walking through but instead came into contact with the thread, all of the siphonable electricity was channeled into it, killing the escort and shutting down the camera system. This was the moment he secretly trained his legs every night for. With the speed augmented by his strong saber-toothed wolf DNA, he rushed across the room, down the hall, and through the door before it closed, dragging the escort's body in with him. With the keycard he now possessed, he quickly unlocked and equipped Proteus just in time before the facility went into lockdown. But now with Proteus which he already mastered and a full battery, he easily ripped open the door with his horror beast claws formed by the magnetic needles. Then once he left the room, he picked up the couple hidden metal plates in the hall, attached them to his arms as shields, then sent out the rest of the magnetic needles to find and detonate with electricity each hidden strand of hair that was placed near lights and communications equipment, providing the cover of darkness for him to slip through the approaching armed guards. He stealthily killed each person nearby as he collected every metal plate to attach to Proteus and complete his defensive armor against the remaining guards and turrets he knew were waiting at the exit. As he finished, he met G2-O No.3. Being the kindhearted pacifist the staff raised him to be so he would obediently offer himself up as research material for generation 3, G2-O No.3 pleaded for him to stop killing everyone. The mind that was more human than monster remained unaware and manipulated into choosing his parents who gave him fake love. But to G2-U No.7 whose mind was only half human, he still saw G2-O No.3 as his only surviving comrade, the only one he could consider a friend despite their only previous conversation being one-sided. If only he could see the fakeness and lies, he could abandon these true monsters, even *if* they are his parents. With little time to talk, G2-U No.7 simply refused and headed to the exit, bluffingly threatening to kill him as well if he tries to stop him. As he turned the corner, he's met with the expected remaining guards and turrets, but suprisingly 2 scientists who didn't flee. They were G2-O No.3's biological parents. What's more, they didn't attack yet, as if they were waiting for something. G2-O No.3 then came into the room and the parents tell him that G2-U No.7 is about to kill them, his loving parents, and that he needs to protect them by killing. This was a desperate attempt at a pincer attack, but it was a useless effort, for they raised their child to be so pacifistic that no suddenly developed instinct could lead him to harm them. This would turn out well, G2-U No.7 thought, as G2-O No.3 would either be too afraid to take action or deal insignificant damage, but the worst case happened that G2-U No.7 couldn't have expected: he instead put himself between them and pleaded for G2-U No.7 to be spared and the fighting to stop. He had chosen not just his human parents but also a murderous half-monster as equals. Could he only see everyone here as redeemable humans? Could he have believed G2-U No.7's words because he couldn't imagine that anybody would lie? Distracted by the shock of seeing what transpired, G2-U No.7 couldn't react in time before the scientists took the first shot, killing G2-O No.3 who was in the way. Enraged at the betrayal of the greatest kindness he had seen in his life, G2-U No.7 lunged at them, indulging in his primal instincts as he ripped them apart in an act of pure predation. With him being the only survivor inside the lab, only he could hear the sorrowful cries he let out as the only person who treated him as a human died before him. This was also the first time he awakened to his gooseneck beast instincts, as it was only then he was allowed to express the feelings of strength in overcoming his enemies and weakness in losing what he desired to protect. If he would ever have something worth protecting again, he would protect it with everything he had without hesitation. G2-U No.7: escaped, age 6. G2-O No.3: deceased, age 6. Project Ark: mysteriously abandoned. Log 2: As a monster who is a chimera of human, sandworm, saber-toothed wolf, horror beast, shielded beast, and gooseneck beast, the now free G2-U No.7 knew he could survive anywhere but wouldn't belong anywhere. And so, clinging onto the feeling of being treated as a human and the hope that he can meet someone like that again, he snuck onto a cargo ship and into Mirroria, a place where, strangely, his first thought upon arrival was that his friend would've complained how noisy it was. With a lonesome life in the shadows of Mirroria scavenging for food and electricity and running from M-SEC waiting for him, and with the hope of meeting a friend one day, he spent his new life being both the phantom protector of Mirroria and the phantom thief, who not even Captain Saki Fuwa could manage to catch in the end. 4 years pass, G2-U No.7, age 10, finds his life comfortable. Despite not yet finding a friend, being known as both a human-like protector and monster-like thief best suits him. Not even his instinctive foresight could warn him of how his comfortable life would get upturned by another beast in human form. One day in typical fashion, he would steal an unattended piece of food, but this time it wasn't merely a half eaten sandwich, it was a whole pizza! He swiftly snatched it and retreated to the rooftops to eat it in peace, but just as he was about to finish the last piece, a scream could be heard where he had stolen the pizza. It wasn't a fully human scream either--it had an intimidating sense of feral power behind it. Slightly unnerved, he hopped down and wandered off into the back alleys to not get involved. But he could hear footsteps follow him, even though he took secret passages and moved in full stealth that was impossible for humans to hear. It was as if he was being tracked by scent, which should also be impossible for humans. Surprised at how long the chase had gone on, he had forgotten about how much battery was left in Proteus, and when he hit a dead end, it was run dry and he couldn't scale the high wall. The determined creature finally caught up, but what appeared from the shadows was merely a girl with silver hair and 2 dogs. They only appeared small and harmless until he looked into the girl's eyes and for the third time in his life foresaw his imminent death, for he was powerless before her overwhelming power without Proteus nor a nearby power source. His only option was to play dead the moment she hit him. The last thing he remembered before losing consciousness was being yelled and barked at while being incessantly kicked despite playing dead. When he awoke inside a cozy room, the same monstrously intimidating girl stood before him and asked him if anything was broken, where his parents were, and his name. Up until then, he only had one name, the horrid name given by a group of monsters to treat him as an expendable tool, but it was also the only thing he had left to remember his only friend by. So with a tone of certainty and pride in what he is, he responded "Yuno." It was only later that Yuno found out the girl was only forced to care for his wounds by her caretaker so people wouldn't find out she beat up a kid and ruin her fresh public image. But that minor detail didn't matter--he once again felt like he was treated as a human, and if someone like her can belong here out in the open, then so can he. Although quite young, after hearing about his speed and skills, the girl's caretaker found him work at M-SEC and cared for under Saki Fuwa, who simply sighed at the sight of him as if she lost a race. Because he's too young to be publicly employed and his fighting is a bit unorthadox, he continues his role as the phantom protector but this time embracing his monster side where the phantom thief once occupied. Having Proteus repaired from years of neglect, extended to fit his growing body, and upgraded to collect energy mid-combat and to enable the armor plates to camouflage, this marks a turning point in his life. Ironically, with the same instincts he foresaw his death as a monster with, he now foresees his future as one where he is human and full of life. He will live as the kind of redeemable human his first friend saw in him, and he will protect everyone who gave him a chance and accepted him. ==Trivia== - "Project Ark" references Noah's Ark, the vessel used in the biblical event in which pairings of every animal were loaded onto the boat to save them from extinction due to a great flood. Just as the great flood decimated all but the surviving handful of animals, Project Ark sought to eradicate all but the creatures they would store within humans.
- Proteus is a prophetic old man in Greek mythology who could shapeshift and knew all things past, present, and future, and would only tell what he knew after being successfully caught. Because he could shapeshift into anything, he became regarded as a symbol of the original matter from which the world was created. Through the use of the equipment Proteus, Yuno could use the knowledge of the past within his library of DNA to construct weapons, complemented by his refined adaptation instinct to analyze the present and perceive his future survival. After being caught by Fenrir, he answered what she wished to know: his name.
- "Yuno" as a Japanese word/phrase can be written many ways in kanji and thus have various meanings. For "yu" this includes "friend," "help," "kindness," "connect," and "origin" among other meanings. For "no" this includes "wish/desire," "field," and "wild" among other meanings.
- "Ono," which would have been G2-O No.3's name had he survived, as a Japanese word/phrase written in kanji means "small field" but is often confused with "Ōno" meaning "large field." Confined within the small labratory and kept in his soundproof room, he never knew such a large world existed.
- Today is April Fools' Day.

2023.04.01 13:58 gray007nl Devise a Strategy: Orcs (Monster Tactics)
There was some response to my previous post, so I figured I might as well keep going for a bit, I enjoy writing them anyhow.
Alright so the three orcs presented in the bestiary are pretty much the same in terms of stats and skills, high strength, decent Dex, good Con (except for the warchief), bad mental scores (okay charisma for the warchief. Low perception (except again the warchief), great AC on the Warchief and Warrior, middling for the Brute, average hitpoints. All skilled in Athletics and Intimidation plus Survival for the Warrior and Warchief. Last but not least all Orcs have Ferocity, allowing them to use their reaction to avoid being brought to 0 hitpoints and increasing their wounded value, Ferocity can be used 3 times (without medical attention) though they only get 1 reaction per round.
So from this you can already derive a basic strategy, Orcs rush headlong into melee, demoralizing their foe and laying into them, using maneuvers as they see fit, they care little for their personal wellbeing, seeing every scar as a gift, only retreating once brought to the brink of death at least once. Though plenty of orcs would also fight to death either for fear of losing face by retreating, to protect their brethren or to avenge fallen allies. Orcs also all have darkvision, so any orc lair is going to be unlit to give the orcs the advantage, though unlike kobolds, orcs simply prioritize whoever's closest only considering whether the target can see in the dark if they've got multiple options. Lacking Acrobatics proficiency Orcs only flank when the enemy leaves their flank exposed, but prefer to gain flat-footed from tripping or grappling enemies.
The first Orc by level is the Orc Brute armed with 2 Knuckle Daggers, 3 javelins and their fists. So first the optimal way for the orc to equip themselves at most times is Knuckledagger in one hand, other hand empty. There is no reason for the Brute to dual wield and the option of performing maneuvers with the empty hand is far more helpful than inaccurately throwing a javelin.
The ideal turn for the Brute is with it already adjacent to an enemy, it starts by demoralizing and regardless of success or failure, it then attacks twice. The actual attacks it uses will depend, the brute has an Intelligence mod of -1, but that's still enough to figure out the fighter in big bulky armour is likely easier to trip than they are to hit, while a character in leather armour or no armour at all they could be better off grabbing first. Shoving will be attempted if it allows the brute to protect a heavily injured ally or if there's something dangerous to push the enemy into. Disarm is not worth attempting unless you homebrewed it. Just striking twice with its knuckledagger is also a perfectly reasonable way to go and may in fact be the optimal choice. The orc would never use 2 maneuvers in a turn, it's far better off using its agile knuckledagger instead of a second maneuver.
If the enemy is 25 feet away or less, the orc strides and then uses the attacks mentioned above, not bothering with Demoralize. If the enemy is between 50 and 25 feet away, the orc strides twice (or steps once if it's exactly 30 feet) and then does 1 attack of its choice. If the enemy is more than 50 feet away, then the brute will draw its javelin, stride once and throw it at the enemy not worrying about the range, Orcs aren't good at throwing javelins and keeping the open hand is just more important. As mentioned earlier, the Brute will only retreat after its Ferocity has triggered once, though it might very well keep fighting to the death as well even when outnumbered as returning to the tribe after having several of your family members killed and failing to kill the people responsible would leave the orc very low in the social hierarchy.
The Orc Warrior is similar in many ways to the brute but it has a different weapon loadout, rocking a Necksplitter, 2 shortswords and 4 javelins. Unlike with the brute, it isn't quite as easy to pin-point an optimal combination of weapons for the brute and as far as I'm concerned there's 2 contenders for best loadout. Either the Warrior uses its Necksplitter in tandem with one of its shortswords, forgoing maneuvers and javelins entirely or it uses 1 shortsword and keeps it other hand free to use maneuvers or javelins. The Warrior likewise has skill in survival which would imply that it's capable of tracking intruders as well as capturing animals but not training them, this means a warrior's pet/mount might still be completely feral and prone to fleeing or disobeying its masters orders.
Another thing distinguishing the warrior from the brute is that the Warrior has Attack of Opportunity. This further encourages it to get in the thick of melee so it can punish spellcasters and cowards, but this also presents an issue as Ferocity and Attack of Opportunity both require the Warrior's singular reaction. I'd handle this thusly, the orc always uses Attack of Opportunity whenever it comes up except when it's below 50% health, then it saves its reaction for Ferocity.
If the Warrior chooses to wield a single shortsword and nothing else, then its method of attack is identical to the Brute, though with considerations regarding attack of opportunity listed above. If electing to wield the Necksplitter alongside a shortsword things get a little different, it cannot do any maneuvers and it's going to take it an extra action to stow a weapon before it can throw a javelin. So firstly, unless the enemy is really far away (more than 75 feet) it won't bother with the javelins, if the enemy genuinely is that far away, then it'll stow its necksplitter and draw a javelin, probably not drawing the necksplitter again for the rest of the combat. Otherwise it'll likely delay for the enemy to get closer as there is no point striding three times and then just letting the enemy hit you.
When attacking with both weapons drawn, the first attack will always be with the Necksplitter as it deals more damage, the second attack will depend on if there is a second target in reach or not, if it is then the second attack is with the necksplitter as well on that secondary target benefiting from both sweep and forceful. If there isn't then the second attack will be with the shortsword to benefit from the agile property instead. Regardless it would try to demoralize first before attacking, though it might also consider stepping to a location where it would be able to hit 2 different enemies with the necksplitter (if it needs to stride to get in position it likely wouldn't bother). It follows the same principles when it comes to retreating as the brute does.
Finally we have the Orc Warchief similar to the warrior in many respects, but different through using a greatclub and having a special action in Battle Cry, it also has better will saves than typical for orcs. A 2-handed weapon really restricts what the Warchief can do on their turn, they need to change grip for maneuvers (other than Shove) or to draw javelins. This combined with the Warchief wanting to use Battle Cry every single turn means they would probably never want to bother with maneuvers and only reach for a javelin is the enemy is more than 50 feet away.
With the enemy right next to the warchief, the warchief's turn is pretty simple. They use Battle Cry and then they strike with their greatclub twice, if the enemy the warchief is fighting has a high AC and the warchief is struggling to hit they'll replace one of the strikes with a demoralize otherwise the bonus from Battle Cry is too good for the warchief not to swing twice, perhaps shoving if there's an incentive to do so.
The presence of the Warchief is going to change the strategy of the other orcs too, every Orc before the warchief in initiative will spend their first turn delaying until after the warchief's turn to benefit from his battle cry, the only exception to this is if they already have an enemy in melee range, then they probably wouldn't wait for the Warchief's order and just start swinging immediately. Likewise the effect of Battle Cry only works on Attack and Damage Rolls, not on skill checks, so with the Warchief around the other Orcs are less likely to use maneuvers preferring strikes when given the option (So Orc Warriors accompanying a warchief would generally be dual wielding Necksplitter and Shortsword).
When it comes to reactions and retreating, the Warchief functions the same way as the Warrior, half HP is where it saves its reactions for Ferocity and it won't flee until it's triggered Ferocity at least once. The other orcs however might flee as soon as the Warchief falls, though again this might also infuriate them into wanting to take revenge on the killer of the warchief and prompt them all to fight to the death.
Orcs as one would expect, are fairly simple tactically, they get stuck in and start swinging, only ever thinking of retreat once it's too late. Surrender is humiliating and not something most orcs would consider, fleeing to fight another day is always preferable and if it isn't an option then they'll die fighting.

2023.04.01 13:24 RyanzRetroReviewz The Mountain - 1956 Film Review - RyanzRetroReviewz
The Mountain - 1956
The Mountain is a 1956 adventure/drama movie, starring the great (and sober for this role) Spencer Tracy, just coming off his success in "Bad Day at Black Rock" the year before (as well as over 30 other film roles under his belt), and the younger, but fairly recognizable up and comer at this point in his career, Robert Wagner (known to more modern movie fans as "Number 2" in the "Austin Powers" film series). Having acted alongside each other in multiple roles already, the chemistry between our two lead actors is evident and believable enough as they portray two brothers (although separated by what seems like 10-20 years in age, though this is more common in the real world than people want in film). The plotline follows these two brothers as they make a deathly high-alpine climb to the top of a nearby Mountain (Mount Blanc, France) where an airplane has recently crashed with plans on looting the dead. The movie is directed by Edward Dmytryk, recently back from being blacklisted from the film industry, as well as serving a short stint in prison with the other "Hollywood Ten" who refused to testify to the House of Un-American Acitivities Committe in their investigations during the Cold War\McCarthy-era "Red scare". Previously known for his 1940s noir films, particularly "Crossfire" from 1947 (one of the earliest films to deal with the subject of anti-semitism), upon Dmytryk's return to Hollywood, he solidified himself yet again with "The Caine Mutiny" in 1954 before bringing together our two leads for their first time in the same year with "Broken Lance", then going on to direct 3 more films before coming across French novelist's Henri Troyat's recent novel "La Neige en Deuil" (inspired by the true airplane crash of Air Indian Flight 245 in 1950) and deciding to bring it alive on screen, acting as both producer and directer for his first time.
We start the movie off with a bang, when a commercial plane crashes atop a snow filled mountain peak, leaving what seems like no survivors. Down below at the nearest village, Zachary Teller leads a simple life of a sheep-herder on his longtime family farm, while currently constantly dodging out a lovestruck neighboring widow who desperately needs a new husband. His younger brother however, Christopher Teller, is angry and envious with his position in life, working as a server\porter boy, waiting on rich skier and mountaineer guests at the village's local mountain resort, as well as sharing the family home with his more respected big brother Zach.
When word arrives of the downed airplane atop the mountain, a rescue party is put together to retrieve any possible survivors and their worldly possessions. Once having been the most experienced mountaineer in the area (and one of the only people to have ever even made the climb), Zachary is asked to lead to climbing expedition, to which he denies on the count of having lost a man over the edge on his last climb years ago.
Later that night at home, the two brothers argue over the ownership of the house, with Christopher wishing to sell it and Zachary wanting to keep it in the family for as long as possible.
The next morning, the unsuccessful expedition returns having lost their main guide (and Zachary's old mountaineering friend) Tsavos, in the midst of the climb.
Again at home that night, the brother's get into another argument, with Christopher this time trying to push Zachary to lead him up the mountain so as to loot the apparent rich, and now dead passengers. This would give Chris the means to leave the village and put to rest his hopes of selling the family farm. But Zachary shoots down the idea for the sake of both his brother's safety and soul, even offering to renounce his claim over the family farm. Already having the idea stuck in his head though, Christopher likewise denies Zachary's offer and stands firm on making the climb alone, forcing his brother to relent in leading him up the mountain. The two brothers pack their gear and start their way up to the base of the mountain at first light.
The next portion of the movie takes us on a spectacular scenic journey, using a combination of stock shots, matte paintings, and practical built rock walls to showcase not only the mountain and landscape itself, but also emphasizing on the physical capabilities of the plus 50 year old Zachary Teller. As the lead climber, Zach makes his way up and along frozen rock walls and narrow ledges, using the strength of his hands and feet alone, all while using hammer and stakes to fix a line of ropes for his less experienced brother to follow.
We're treated to a quick scare when Christopher takes a slip and goes falling down some way before Zachary finally gets hold of the rope and pulling his brother back up to safety, ripping his palms into a bloody mess in the process.
By now the tables have turned in the brothers' mindsets, Christopher now wishing to turn back out of fear, and Zachary now too far into his goal of conquering the mountain yet again, clear forgetting the reason why they started the climb in the first place. Zach convinces his brother to continue on and up to the summit, and that the worst of it is now over.
Together, now using their ice axes and crampon shoes, the brothers hike up the snowy (now on location) summit without problem, finally arriving at the top of the mountain and the plane wreckage in which they came for. While Zachary is full of pride and achievement at what they've accomplished together as brothers, Chris has no care for their triumphs, and shows his true colors as a man by immediately looting treasures from the dead, as well as breaking a cross which Zach puts together from wreckage to hide the evidence of anybody having even been there.
The underlying theme of this movie now finally surfaces in full (the massive feat of scaling the mountain acting as a metaphor for how difficult it is for Zach to accept how horrible his brother truly is, and to finally turn his back on him) when the brothers discover an Indian woman still alive in the back of the plane. Zach cares for her over night and hitches her up to a sled in the morning to drag her down the mountain, but Chris seeing this as a clear obstacle now in the way of him and his riches, throws his older brother down to the ground and tries to strangle the woman to death. Zachary now rises up and strikes his younger brother down to the ground with some good old classic Spencer Tracy style (starting onscreen and ending offscreen, complete with sound effects) punches to the face, before turning around and leaving Chris to get down the mountain on his own.
Zachary single handedly drags and hoists the surviving Indian woman down the side of the mountain, forcing him to use a different route from before, he comes to a pair of untrustworthy looking snow bridges. He inspects the first and decides against it, but still almost looses the woman while crossing over the second. An angry and frantic Christopher finally catches up to the pair and decides not to listen to his own brother's warnings about the remaining bridge, attempting and failing to cross it when the weight gives out, sending him falling to his death into an unknown depth of crevasse.
Zachary Teller, although completely heartbroken now from having lost his brother both in spirit and in body, wastes no time on mourning and continues on down the mountain with the injured Indian woman in tow.
Upon arrival back to the village, Zachary shoots down all claims that he is a hero of any sorts, and lies about his brother's inhuman actions on the mountain, telling instead the opposite story; that it was he, Zach Teller, who came up with the idea and continued on with his obsession of looting the dead, and that his brother Christopher Teller had only went along solely to aid in the safety of his Zach.
Though nobody believes it, they all give Zachary the benefit of not calling him out as a liar, and his brother as a bad man (all save for the village priest that is). He gets into the widowed neighbor lady's carriage with her and together they head "home" to live happily ever after. A final glance back at the mountain for old Zach Teller finally puts all his stored up inner strife's to bed for good, bringing us from the image of one mountain to another with the classic closing of all the Paramount Pictures movies.
To sum it all up, The Mountain (1956) is a truly amazing piece of retro cinema. Starting with a simple plotline on the surface, and changing into a more complicated family dynamic as the film goes on. This movie set the bar for the man vs. nature genre in film, as well as the common underlying theme in which these plotlines usually emphasize on, with the conquering and/or survival of certain physical hardships (in this case, the scaling of the mountain) simply acting as a metaphor for the deeper internal struggles in which our main charactes must finally come to face. Our two leads actors handle this all with extreme authenticity and sincirety, particularly Spencer in one of his most memorable and suitable roles of his entire career. The combination of both on location shots and special effect built sets make the setting for this movie more than believable enough (as long as you have an imagination enough for movies of both this time and this genre). All this being brought together and guided over by Dmytryk as both director and producer, making this (in my personal opinion that is), one of the greatest film achievements of his career as well. A classic film for all fans of the man vs. nature genre, and all around awesome retro movies in general.
And that's all she wrote folks. Thanks for reading.

2023.04.01 13:20 megabyzus Vizio sound bar suddenly losing eARC volume control via tcl roku tv. Power cycle temporarily fixes it for a few hours
my tcl Roku tv and my Vizio sound bar are connected via earc. when I turn the tv on or off the sound bar also correctly turns on and off. normally I control the volume of the sound bar through the Roku remote. recently I no longer can do that and changing the volume does not change the sound bar volume. the sound bar is set at a high volume that can no longer be controlled by the Roku remote. disconnecting and reconnecting the sound bar from power temporarily fixes it until a few hours later. Any thoughts why this is suddenly happening and how I can fix it?

2023.04.01 13:09 AMG3141 Installed Pop OS on new NVMe drive, worked once, now won't boot and can no longer run off live USB. [LONG]
I've been at this for hours and I feel like I've exhausted every single option I can think of. If you can think of anything at all to try and help fix this, please let me know because I just don't know what's wrong. Details below (there's a lot of them).
Yesterday I got a new 2TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe drive to install Pop OS onto. I installed it as normal and it was working fine. I was setting it up and while waiting for something to load, I was playing around with the
BackSlide Gnome extension, when I pressed the button to advance to the next image too many times in quick succession and the PC locked up. I run this extension on my laptop as well and this has happened before. Usually the solution is to do a hard power off (hold the power button for a few seconds until it shuts off) and it boots up just fine.
When I turned the PC back on, it doesn't get past the motherboard manufacturer logo screen. I then plugged in my USB drive again and was able to get back into the live environment. In the "Install Pop OS" app, I was given the option to overwrite my existing installation of Pop OS (I can't remember the exact wording, but it was the option to keep all my files while creating a fresh install of everything else).
I had already installed a few things at this point and didn't really want to do that, so I thought I would try and boot back into my installation again. That didn't work, and when I tried to boot into the live environment, I got the "Try or install Pop OS screen" with the countdown, then it just went to a black screen after that. I haven't made any progress since then.
Here are some of the things I've tried:
- On my PC I also have a Windows 10 installation and an Arch installation. They have both worked fine through all this (I am able to access the NVMe drive through the disk utility on Arch, and it seems fine). I thought these might be interfering, so I unplugged all the drives except the NVMe, but still got the same behaviour.
- I removed the NVMe drive (so no drives in the system at all), same behaviour.
- I reflashed the USB, tried another USB, tried the LTS/Nvidia versions. They all give the same result.
- I've cleared the CMOS using the pins, removed the battery, no luck (and yes, before you ask, secure boot has been off this entire time).
- I then tried both of the USBs on another computer in my house, and they work fine. They also work fine on my laptop, so that implies that it is an issue with my hardware, which has come about since I originally installed Pop OS.
- One time, I plugged in the USB and instead of showing the "Try or Install" screen, it showed the normal booting up sequence (like I would see on my laptop), but it stopped after a few lines with the error end Kernel panic - not syncing: timer doesn't work through Interrupt-remapped IO-APIC. I did a search for this error, but I couldn't find anything which helped, and when I rebooted with the same USB, I got back to the original black screen behaviour.
Throughout all this, one thing I noticed is that at some point the "UEFI Pop!_OS" boot option disappeared in my BIOS and now I'm just left with a generic "UEFI OS" option on the Samsung drive, which I
think was there before but I can't quite remember. When I select this as my boot option, it gets stuck on the motherboard logo screen.
Also, sometimes, when I reboot after booting into the USB, the USB option shows up again on the boot options screen (at one point I had 15(!!!) boot options with only the USB drive and the NVMe drive plugged in).
Here are my PC specs:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 3 1200.
- RAM: 2x8GB Corsair Vengeance 3000MHz (although, I haven't turned XMP back on since I cleared CMOS, so for it has been running at 2100MHz for most of this).
- GPU: Normally, GTX 1660 Ti, but the NVMe drive is mounted below the GPU, so I have had an old GT 1030 in it currently while troubleshooting (to make it easier to get at the NVMe drive).
- Storage:
- Adata ~240GB SATA SSD with Windows 10 and Arch.
- WD 500GB HDD.
- WD 1TB HDD.
- Samsung 2TB 970 EVO Plus NVMe SSD with Pop OS (mentioned above).
Like I said at the top, any suggestions or ideas at all, please leave a comment. I have just hit a dead end.
Thanks.

2023.04.01 11:46 CP4-Throwaway My OFFICIAL NEW Generation Definitions!!!
| Alright, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to give out my new definitions and have an explanation for each one. Here we go. GI Generation: born circa 1901 to 1924 The generation obviously starts in 1901 because this is the first cohort to not legally be able to fight in WWI since they had come of age right after the war had ended in 1918. They would be the typical Roaring Twenties young adults. 1898-1900 borns kind of cusp with this generation, since their war efforts weren't that recognized, barely having much time in the war. Interbellum Wave: born circa 1901 to 1913 This wave would end in 1913, not only because of the "Interbellum Generation" cohort officiall yending in 1913, but also because of the fact that 1913 borns were likely the last to have a memory of WWI at all. Memory happened later than usual because of the lack of technology and whatnot. Greatest Generation: born circa 1914 to 1924 This wave is the cohort that does not remember WWI but has memory of the immediate postWWI aftermath that was the Roaring Twenties, right before the Crash of 1929. Plus, 1924ers were some of the last truly recognized for their WWII efforts, and were higher in the ranks than their 1925-1927 born peers. Silent Generation: born circa 1925 to 1942 This generation should start in 1925 since they were the first to be sort of blue chippers in the WWII ranks, and not recognized as much for their war efforts. Plus, they have no memory of the 1929 Stock Market Crash, let alone any memory prior to it. 1925-1927 would sort of cusp with the GIs because they did fight in the war though. Traditional Generation: born circa 1925 to 1933 This was the wave that truly experienced the hardship of the Great Depression as children, while also having to grow up in WWII. They thankfully had come of age in the Renaissance period of America during the 1950s and had very traditional values. They sort of were the "Leave it Beaver" generation, if you will. This ends with 1933 borns because they were the born during the hardest period of the Great Depression, and most likely would've been the last to fight in the Korean War, give or take. Conformist Generation: born circa 1934 to 1942 This was the cohort that were children during WWII and had experienced some of their formative years already during the post-WWII Expansion period, before coming of age in the peak of it. They immediately conformed to the beliefs and norms of those days, and had since been a part of the societal norms. However, they would be too young to truly partake in the youthful acts of the "Sixties Generation". It ends with 1942 since they were likely the last to remember WWII. And like S&H mentioned in his Generations book, were in the Class of 1964, and were not a part of the protests. Boom Generation: born circa 1943 to 1960 This generation starts in 1943 due to the lack of any memory for WWII and were the first youthful activists during the 60s. They were born before the post-war boom, so there might be a bit of a cusp around 1943-1945 borns. Sixties Generation: born circa 1943 to 1952 They were the generation that were children in the 50s and were directly fed the 50s beliefs onto them. They were the generation that were given everything and promised the world. They came of age in the 60s and were the stereotypical "Flower Children", and continued their activism well into the 70s. This wave changed an entire era of early 20th century traditionalism and birthed the modern era of today. This ends with 1952 since they were noticeably the last that really got to fight in the Vietnam War. The draft ended in 1971, so the cohort right after them (1953) might have likely not been drafted. Generation Jones: born circa 1953 to 1960 This generation were children during the 60s, and were given the same promises as the Sixties Generation, however experienced a lot of hardship compared to them. They are the last cohort to remember JFK, they were still very young when society had started becoming more adult-centered and focused less on the children, experienced many assassinations, White House scandals (Watergate), the US dollar separating away from the Gold standard, the Oil Crisis of 1973, Stagflation and the 70s economic malaise, Kent State, and much more. It made them more jaded and grounded in reality. They at least had disco and punk to enjoy. And were at the forefront of "Yuppiedom". Generation Xers: born circa 1961 to 1976 This starts in 1961 since they have no memory of the JFK assassination, and were immediately overlooked from the beginning. Many of them had likely not been even born because of the introduction of the birth pill in 1960. But there is sort of a cusp with 1958-1960 births due to their JFK memories not being very solid. Baby Busters: born circa 1961 to 1967 This group is considered to be the most self-destructive youth cohort in the 20th century, according to S&H's studies in their book "Generations". They had a less-than-stellar childhood in the 60s and 70s. They had come of age during the 80s so they were likely the most Conservative young adult cohort in a long time. Were the original "Generation Xers" talked about by fellow Buster Douglas Coupland (1961 born). This cohort more than likely defined Generation X culture more than any other cohort, only rivaled by the Jonesers. Busters end with 1967ers since they were the last cohort out of K-12 prior to the Challenger explosion. Gen X's JFK assassination at the time. MTV Generation: born circa 1968 to 1976 This group didn't have it as bad as the Jonesers and the Busters. Sure, they grew up in the 70s but they were still young enough to experience the 80s in their formative years when things were getting better. And many of them had come of age in the 1990s, the most prosperous decade in recent history. This is the most stereotypical Xer cohort, but based off of the traits given to them that they thought they had to follow. It wasn't as genuine as the Busters, who actually grew up pretty hard. This ends with 1976 since they were some of the last to inhibit some of the hardships growing up. Especially since there was a huge baby bust from 1971 to 1976, where many of them would have gotten aborted, unfortunately. Generation Y: born circa 1977 to 1992 Another name for this cohort could be the "Echo Boom Generation" since there was an echo boom from roughly 1977 to 1992ish. This group starts in 1977 because they were the first group to come of age alongside Windows 95, which started the commercialization of the Internet. They were basically the guinea pigs of it. They likely have little to no memory of the 70s and weren't fully conscious until things already had gotten good by around 1983-1984. Late 70s borns are NOT Xers. They're Yers. Look at the celebrities born in 1977. Tom Brady was born in 1977. His prime was in the 2000s and 2010s. He's Gen Y. NOT an Xer. Definitely not Xers, I will tell you that. They were in their early 20s at the turn of the millennium, so they were definitely the start of something new. This is also at the point where relation to the 60s Xers is just not there. There is too much of a gap. There is sort of a cusp around 1974-1976 tho, since even the mid 70s babies barely inhibit that many X traits tbh. Xennials: born circa 1977 to 1983 You could also call this group "Anadigitals" since they grew up with analog technology and no internet but were still youthful and coming of age alongside the internet boom. The stereotypical 90s cohort that were into grunge and alternative, but the members of this generation were at the forefront of the late 90s teen pop era. The last to experience an adult life pre-9/11. Millennials: born circa 1984 to 1992 This is the group that legit came of age in the new millennium and are completely of a different mold to the Xers, compared to the Xennials. The "90s kid" generation that you see online. This is also sort of the "Peter Pan Generation" that doesn't seem to truly want to grow up, having come into maturity after the events of Columbine, Y2K, 9/11, War on Terror, Hurricane Katrina, and the Great Recession. This group had it the hardest during 2008 and were the most Democratic young adult group in a long time. They would've experienced many of their adolescence on the internet in chatrooms or social media (AOL, Friendster, MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Twitter, Google Video, etc.). They influenced the 2010s pop culture more than anyone else. Generation Z: born circa 1993 to 2008 This group starts in 1993 because there's sort of a huge gap that can't be ignored between 1992 and 1993 babies. 1993 borns were the first born after the power dynamics changed in politics from the GIs to the Booms, with a Boom president. They likely have no memory of many of the critical events of the 90s like OKC, OJ Simpson, Princess Diana's death, Monica Lewinsky, or even Columbine. They entered grade school after the event anyway, so it wouldn't have had much impact to them. They are also the first that likely did not understand the impact of 9/11 at the time. They were still acting like it was "the 90s" until like 2004 when their pop culture had changed. 1991-1992 borns are sort of on a cusp here because they were a bit too young to act on the 2008 election votes and had been merely high school students and not come of age until after the GFC crash, so they would have been a little better off compared to the 80s babies. Zillennials: born circa 1993 to 2000 This is the wave that is still pop culturally connected to the Millennial wave of Gen Y, with a lot of leftover kids shows from the 90s still running during their childhoods, but were a bit socially different. Their voices weren't heard politically until like around the 2016 or 2020 elections, which were more divided compared to 2008 (2012 doesn't really count here tho). They are the Clinton babies. They were still around during the 20th century, pre-9/11, but were merely children who still saw the 2000s as a magical period, when older people saw it as a very pessimistic and dark decade to be alive. Zoomers: born circa 2001 to 2008 This group is totally removed from anything involving the 20th century and mainly grew up in the 2010s decade, post-GFC. They likely have no memory of a world prior to Katrina and the technological explosion during the 2000s. They didn't form a real political opinion until Trump was in office (2016 at the earliest for them). They were most effected by Parkland/MFOL, the death of mumble rappers, COVID-19, and the rise of Andrew Tate, than anything going on during the 2000s. They did not inherently grow up with smart technology but they were easily integrated into it as they were cognizant. This ends with 2008 since they were the last Bush babies, the last to be born right before the worst of the recession hit, and were the last to likely remember a world prior to the smartphone domination. Generation Alpha: born circa 2009 to present A lot of people say that this definitely starts in 2010, like many late 00s born gatekeepers love to say on GenZ, but I hate to break it to you 09ers, but y'all are the same as 10ers. Sorry not sorry. 2009 babies were the first born during the Obama administration and after the change that was 2008. They have no memory of a world prior to the smartphone takeover of the early 2010s. Most of their childhood happened during the political turmoil and polarization of the post-2014 era. Their entire life has been turbulent, filled with crazy disasters after crazy disasters (although the Zoomers can also relate to this as well). They had inherently adopted smartphones and iPads very, very, VERY young. 2006-2008 would kind of cusp with Alpha, due to still being toddlers during the radical transition of smartphones. iGeneration: born circa 2009 to 2016 Basically just the Obama babies. First that inherently grew up with Apple technology and whatnot. The stereotypical "Victory Royale" generation, doing the Orange Justice and Fortnite dances. Their influencers would've been mainly along the lines of MrBeast, iShowSpeed, KSI, Paul brothers, Ricegum, and many many more. Lil Tay would be in their cohort. They are some of the last to remember a pre-COVID world, so they are the last to be somewhat grounded in reality and that can relate to "SNOW DAYS". Post-COVID Generation: born circa 2017 to present Basically the Trump/Biden babies that have no memory of a world prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and will be growing up in the aftermath of COVID. Their main influence so far is Cocomelon and surprisingly Tiktok, just like the Zoomers and the iGen. They will never know what it's like to live in a normal world, frankly. Zoom and online school is all they know. submitted by CP4-Throwaway to generationology [link] [comments] |

2023.04.01 11:23 lousy_writer Galactic Season 3: A Guide: Doing Seasons on all servers
DISCLAIMER: This is an updated version of an older post of mine that dealt with grinding 100 Galactic Season levels on multiple servers. The Galactic Season has one particular perk some people might not be aware of (I certainly wasn't until I read about it in this very sub towards the end of season 1; unfortunately it was pretty much over by then): You have one reward track per legacy, and not just for your entire account: Which means that you can get 10,000 CC overall and 25 random crates on top of all that other stuff if you soldier through the track, because you'll get the CC-rewards mostly towards the end.
(This is a departure from how it has been in seasons 1 and 2, where you got 4,000 CC on each legacy evenly distributed over twenty 200 CC-chunks which you got every 5 levels - which means that it also paid off to do or even buy just a few GS-leves: doing, say, 30 levels on every server was a perfectly viable approach during that tie because you still managed to get 6000 CC out of it back then; an approach that isn't feasible anymore.)
So, where to start:
1) To subscribe or not to subscribe
- The bad news first: Since I am operating under the assumption that you have literally nothing on most or all other servers, subscribing for an initial month is highly advisable - simply because you need to be able to hold more than 1,000,000 credits in your hands. (If you already did this, ignore this part.)
- the rewards on the subscriber track are what you want: all of those sweet 2000 CC are there, and most of the season tokens. This means that even if you don't start as a subscriber, you certainly have to finish the season as one (the good news is that subscribing retroactively unlocks all rewards on the subscription tracks, including those you earned while you were not subscribed). If you don't want to fork over the subscription fee at all, you might just as well stop reading here.
2) Creating characters and starting the game
- Generally, this guide assumes that RP or playing through the story is no priority of yours; and neither is an optimized legacy (my guide for that is here ) - this is just about getting through the Galactic Season with as many legacies as possible in relatively little playtime.
- Unsurprisingly, stealth classes are most convenient for this endeavor - whether you are doing FPs, do the usual 8 quests/100 mobs-thing or whatever else that isn't a space or GSF mission, you're best off with a stealther - ideally a Shadow/Assassin (since they get crowd control a lot sooner than the tech stealthers), but a Scoundrel/Operative will do as well.
- create one character per faction - as a rule, you don't need more than these two (and in fact you should concentrate your efforts on these two because anything else tends to be a waste of time). Occasionally you will have to create new alts if a weekly objective asks for it, but these are little more than deco for your legacy otherwise.
- In addition to this: If you are one of those people (like me) who never bothered to blow their character boosts, now is their time to shine: A legacy that consists exclusively of fresh characters is somewhat limited in its options and might have to resort to skipping weekly objectives because the respective planets or FPs are out of reach; a level 70 character however can do pretty much everything as long as it isn't faction-exclusive (also, they get a heap of conquest points simply for reputation increases, which is the easiest way to get the daily 25k). I would strongly suggest to prioritize Leviathan and (if you have a second boost left) Tulak Hord for these - not just because of the language barrier, but also because these two servers are less populated than the English-speaking realms. It's particularly jarring on Leviathan where even during peak time you might have a hard time finding a group for world bosses or FPs, so having a high level character here is immensely helpful.
3) Getting started, getting to level 10, finishing the first two planets
- as soon as you enter the game, activate "exploration missions" on your map interface.
- get a companion from your collection (more on that under #6). At the very least you should have universal access to Amity, since you only need GS level 1 on your main legacy and unlock that compantion for your entire account. (unlocking Amity costs 60 CC).
- as soon as you get your first +25% XP boost, activate it.
- once you're level 8, get to the fleet:
- there you learn a few gathering skills (preferably bioanalysis and scavenging among them since you're most likely to use these)
- then you buy a speeder (this part is most important)
- and you may buy your faction's capital stronghold.
- return to your starter planet and do all the quests there (they're generally quick and easy), without any double XP event currently active, you should be around level 17 before you move on to your faction's capital world.
- once you finished the starter planet, pick up the stronghold quest from the hologram; if you haven't bought a stronghold yet, do it now. In this stronghold, you place a legacy cargo hold (reward from the hologram quest mentioned above), Felusia Stato (same), a mail box (same), and finally a personal cargo hold (available for 15k at the security key vendor). If you can't afford this right now, definitely do it ASAP.
- This should have taken a bit more than an hour or so. Rinse repeat for the other faction's character.
- Depending on this week's objective, you might want to complete the class story on the capital with at least one character: if, say, space missions are needed, you need to get your ship first.
4) What about guilds?
- One of the things you should definitely do soon is finding a guild - if only for the XP bonus and the weekly conquest yield. Bigger guilds are of course better (maxed out XP bonuses, Flagship perks and large yield invasions are quite helpful), but small ones will do as well as long as they're invading something. This also means: if you get ninjainvited by a huge guild on a starter planet - even if you otherwise hate that, now is not the time to be picky.
- with "soon" I mean before your first weekly reset: you only start collecting conquest points on behalf of your guild after the reset, and you'll get your first conquest yield the week after that. I.e. only in week 3 you will start to capitalize financially. All the more reason to not drag that out.
5) What about legacies?
- I wrote extensively about optimizing your legacy in my guide for fresh legacies, but this doesn't apply here: With only two active characters which you won't level more than necessary, you can also forget about leveling your legacy - i.e. no perks, no heroic moments, no bonuses. After getting to level GS level 100, most of my legacies were around level 7 at the end of season 2 and around level 12 at the end of season 3. Go figure.
- This also means that the only useful thing you can buy is the rocket boost, on a 2 minute timer (yayyy...) - if you have enough money (unlikely, at least in the beginning). Once you hit legacy level 2, you can buy Fast Travel I (minus 2 minutes on your fast travel CD), which is actually worth the 100k.
6) What about companions?
- apart from their usual role (supporting you), a very crucial element of companions is that they're a source of conquest points via the daily "Influencer"- and "Benefactor"-objectives, which you'll need unless you have a character over level 50 (for the Reputation-objective). While it's easy to do in the beginning, the higher your companion gets the more gifts you need to push him further. For that reason you might want a wider selection of companions.
- apart from Amity, you have your first companion plus your ship droid, and if you don't level your character's class story, that's pretty much it for you unless you have a bunch of companions in your collection. If you don't, one way of collecting those is buying them at the Galactic Season vendor - they change on a weekly basis and cost 5 (or was it 6?) tokens, and unlocking them for your entire account is pretty cheap. Which means that while you may not be able to afford them in the beginning, once the season has progressed far enough that you have 6/15 tokens on every server, you can basically buy half of them in one swoop, and can still save tokens on your main server for stuff like the penthouses.
7) Leveling
- since currently there's no dual XP event, leveling is relatively tedious, even with aforementioned 25% XP token and the 15% guild bonus (and since you have neither the legacy level nor - at least in the beginning - the money for the legacy perk "class mission experience V", this isn't really an option either).
- I suggest to level as far as you need for the easily available objectives. For example, for the "Terrors of Taris"-objective I had to bring the imperial character on every server to the mid 30s. Other than that, I would leave them where they are unless you have some spare time.
8) Finances
- For bullet point #9 (strongholds), you need loads of cash - not very much for a seasoned player with a lot of charcters, but a lot for a legacy that's essentially virginal - getting enough money without a sponsor and exclusively by yourself is out of question, especially after the cuts for weekly conquest.
- I suggest to sell your encryptions, legendary embers and whatever else you can turn into credits as soon as possible. In my experience and right now (April 2023) encryptions sell for between 10,000,000 and 12,000,000 - depending on the servers of course. If you manage to sell those for a decent price, you should have enough cash to afford your 150% stronghold bonus after a few weeks.
- if you did enough GSF weeklies (and therefore collected a bunch of fleet commendations) you might also buy epic equipment for space missions relatively early on. Those are so expensive on most servers that even if you manage to sell one piece faaaaar below the averge price, you end up wealthy enough to afford six fully expanded strongholds (and since there isn't really anything you can do with anything you acquire on those other servers, that loss in cash doesn't really hurt you).
- another option would be a "galactic season pact", if you manage to find trustworthy people: you trade around 50 million credits with someone from another server (which is very little if you have an established account in today's economy), then both of you can buy six fully expanded strongholds right off the bat. If you can repeat this on all other servers, this would be 200 million - for multibillionaires not that big of a deal; but one that saves you a lot of conquest grinding time down the road.
- For more on finances during Galactic Season check this post.
9) Strongholds
- if anything, getting your 150% stronghold bonus is even more important than usual: depending on how you do it, up to ~50% of your 800 GS points may come from the daily quest (25k conquest, always available) or the occasional "Marching Through the Galaxy"-weekly (200k conquest, pops up occasionally). So you want to get these 150% as soon as possible.
- You get up to 25% for one fully expanded stronghold, so in order to get there, you need at least six strongholds (but more likely seven, since partially expanded strongholds might do the trick as well). Here is a table for the least expensive combinations.
- unlike all the others, the Umbara stronghold is only available on Odessen. If you know how to get there with a low level character, let me know.
- the strongholds are the reason why being subscribed is advisable: Without a subscription, you're capped at 65% since you can't spend more than 1 million credit at once (which limits you to 9/9 Coruscant, 9/9 Dromund Kaas and 5/9 Nar Shaddaa).
10a) Getting to season level 100
- a Galactic Season lasts 20 weeks- this means that you have to gain at least 40 points per week on average if you want to complete the reward track (800 points) just in time, more if you start later.
- as a subscriber, you gain: 8 points per smaller objective, 12 points per larger objective, 8 points as a 4 day-login bonus, and 2 points for the daily objective. So, if you do at least 2-3 small goals per week, and regularly log in for the "influencing the galaxy"-objective, you get between 38 and 46 points per week.
- as a non-subscriber, you gain: 6 points per smaller objective, 10 points per larger objective, 4 points as a 4 day-login bonus, and 2 points for the daily objective. So, if you do 3-4 small objectives per week, and regularly log in for the "influencing the galaxy"-objective, you get between 36 and 42 points per week - and between 46 and 54 points per week as soon as you resubscribe for the last month. Because even if you are trying to minimize your subscription fees and only subscribe for cashing out on a completed reward track, you still don't want to wait until you have hit level 100 with every legacy, but subscribe quite a few weeks before that (around the 600 points-mark, depending on how many GS points you can reliably make within 4 weeks and 2 days as a subscriber) and finish while you are still subscribed.
- since every week has 10 possible goals, you don't have to do the bare minimum - I would always try to do as many as you can comfortably do (well, up to 7 objectives, that is): it enables you to take a break, do fewer objectives than required, or finish earlier. Personally I pick those that take the least amount of time, but if you like specific mission times better even with fresh characters, you might also do those.
10b) Time spent on objectives
Fortunately, it seems that the objective structure is for the most part the same as it was during GS 2 and 3 (I am working under the assumption that most of the objectives that haven't popped up yet will appear in the future, so I am sticking to my GS 2-guide here). I will update this part of the post if necessary, depending on how many new objectives appear, or how many old ones have been shelved.
- "Influencing the Galaxy" is the daily objective that is always available; and it requires you to get 25k conquest points - and it's also the main reason why you want that 150% stronghold bonus. Because with that bonus, all you need is "Influencer" (just level a random companion with cheap level 1 gifts; buy a bunch of those in advance at the fleet), "Crew skill up" (just send a companion to do a yellow quest) and "Decorator" (just move one piece of furniture around 5 times); if you have less than 150%, you may want to do a few more objectives ("Benefactor", 5 crew skill missions and using a taxi are the best suited). But if you have a character of level 50 or higher, you can do the daily simply by raising your reputation with any faction. This quest yields around 18k-19k conquest points even without a stronghold, over 25k once you have around 45% stronghold bonus, and almost 44k if you have the 150%.
- "March across the Galaxy" only requires you to regularly do "Influencing the Galaxy" (which yields at least 175k per week) and get a few extra conquest points on top of that. Time invested: practically 0.
- the collecting 40 notes-objective can be achieved as a side effect of just doing your thing. Time invested: practically 0.
- the 1000 reputation with Amity-objective can be achieved by just trading in enough notes with her. Time invested: practically 0.
- "Ace of the Armada" just needs you to do the very first escort mission four times, and since that only takes 3.5 minutes, you can do that quest in around 15 minutes. More importantly, as long as your starship doesn't get shot down (and with some cheap ship armor and shields this is basically impossible), you can AFK this mission because all you need is survive - you don't even have to protect the ship you're supposed to escort. Read something or watch youtube or whatever and only get back to the game every 4 minutes until you're done with that objective. Downside: only available for characters with a starship (i.e. those that have finished the capital world class story).
- doing 15 quests as a specific class is fairly simple: just create a new toon and do every quest you find with them. Takes around 30 minutes. (Unless of course it's a class you already have.)
- simple tasks like "kill 25 mobs without a companion", "affect 15 mobs with usables" etc. are super easy, barely an inconvenience. Do them. (Bonus tipp: "This will do nicely" can be done in 1 minute by doing the Coruscant H2 "The Republic's Most Wanted": just enter the phase, get to the room on the left, trigger the usable, get out and reset the phase. After the third explosion, you have done it.)
And then there are those objectives that are judgment calls or may be out of reach for your characters:
- those grindy regional objectives (doing 8 quests/100 enemies on a planet) are fairly straightforward; especially with stealthers. Shouldn't take much longer than half an hour, possibly even less. Downside: You need a sufficiently leveled character for this - but since you get a selection of planets, this shouldn't be that much of a problem.
- world bosses are generally easily done for the points they give (the exceptions are Ossus and Voss), but finding a group might be a bit tedious. The bigger problem however is that you may not have a character that is high enough, which means that you either have to skip that objective or level your respective toon.
- "Legacies of..."-objectives require you to run instances - either once with bonus bosses, or twice without (since unlocking the bonus boss - if available - can be extremely tedious, I personally stick to doing them twice). By the way, if an FP has a storymode available, it counts as well; and these can be super quick if done with a stealther - "Boarding Party" or "Assault on Korriban" for example take around 10-15 minutes. Ultimatelly, I actually ended up doing all FP objectives since those were pretty convenient and easily done - there's always at least one FP that doesn't take too long or can even be solo'd.
- Daily Sweep quests depend on which area you're sweeping. Doing 2/2 CZ-198 dailies was pretty chill (even though I had to do it on two separate days, which I usually am not too fond of), but I skipped everything else.
- 6/6 starfighter matches may take around 1 hour - assuming you win as much as you lose, it takes 4 games to meet the goal; and if each game takes a bit longer than 10 minutes on average, that's where you end up. Even though I like GSF, after my experiences during GS 2 I ultimately came to the conclusion that the juice isn't really worth the squeeze here - 20 GSF matches on five servers (assuming that you win as much as you lose) in a week are simply too exhausting if you ask me. However, if you still want to do it - don't forget to do "Introduction to Starfighter" and then regularly the daily/weekly for upgrading your starfighters! (Also for Fleet Commendations.)
- something similar can be said for the 8/8 PvP matches.
- medal collecting-objectives (both for PvP and for GSF) aren't something I would recommend unless you are really good at it.
My personal experiences:
- Season 2: It took quite some time in the beginning, because a lot of objectives were effectively behind level restrictions (which means that I had to level my characters every once in a while), and I had to get enough money to get the 150% conquest bonus - but once I had gotten there, it was pretty easy and most obejctivess little more than a formality; and it became a breeze once I had one character over level 50 (i.e. was able to do the "Influence the Galaxy" with a single click as long as I had rep tokens).
- Season 3/4: This one was a bit easier since I already had at least on level 50 character on every legacy, but the objectives were harsher: While GS 2 had a pretty forgiving start with plenty of low level objectives, GS 3 required you to have characters in their 30s or 40s pretty on. Same goes for the beginning of GS 4: My legacies are pretty solid by now, but the first week already starting with objectives that include killing the Voss WB is pretty harsh.

2023.04.01 11:18 zaph239 Dealing with hostility from women
I am a guy and at this point in my life I have given up on finding a partner. I would settle for women treating me with a bit of respect and like a human being but even that seems like too much to ask.
Something that happened to me recently sums up the problem. I play tennis and went to a social tennis meet up at my local club. Basically a bunch of players turn up and play some none competitive singles and doubles.
Problem was, when I arrived there was only one player there. A women in her twenties sat on the court. Now to be honest I was tempted to turn around right then and there and leave because I had a good idea what would happen. However I knew that would be a d**k move because she had turned up on time and had no-one to play with. Plus I couldn't be certain she hadn't seen me and how would it look if I turned around and walked away?
So I entered the court and asked if she was here for social play? She said yes but her body language was incredible hostile. I introduced myself, asked her name but it was like trying to pull teeth getting that out of her. So I suggested we warm up and rally.
That started the most awkward 20 minutes of my life, there was just this hostile vibe coming off her and if I attempted to talk to her, I felt like I had done something wrong. As I say this was meant to be a fun social event, you're suppose to chat between play.
I seriously thought about walking off the court because of her rude behaviour. Fortunately some other players turned up after about 20 minutes and she treated them completely different. Suddenly she was all smiles, chatting away, so it wasn't that she was shy.
To be honest I am just fedup of this kind of thing, it happens to me all the time. Women just seem to think they have licence to be rude and ill mannered towards me. When I have done nothing to deserve it.

2023.04.01 11:17 Turbokylling Alternative to the OLED ultrawides?
Hey,
In the coming months I'm putting together a PC and my old monitors are probably also due for a replacement. I really want to get in on the ultrawides, as they look amazing but all the talk of OLED image retention, colour fringing, fans in the monitors, brightness going down over the years and having to think about how you use the monitor has completely turned me off it.
It might be a "I never experienced any of that" but just having that in the back of my mind makes it not worth it for me. Seen and heard too many stories now and
this thread and some of the comments was the final nail in the coffin.
Plus, I'll be using the monitor 10+ hours a day, it will display static images at times, will be in a bright and well lit room for a lot of the time, will be doing productive work as well.
So question is, what's the alternative? I believe Samsung's QLED is highly praised and the G9 looks very interesting, although a tad too wide for my liking and I hear it has its share of QA issues? Any gaming focused QLED 3440x1440 monitors with Gsync Ultimate out there, anything upcoming? Another screen technology worth looking out for?
