2023.06.08 18:22 kupcakezz Roommate keeps sighing

I (21M) have a roommate (24M) who keeps sighing every evening and it’s been stressing me out.
He studies in the evening until 5-6 am (he’s very studious and I respect him for that) but he would keep sighing and it makes it hard for me to sleep.
Though my main problem is that whenever I turn on the AC (around 12 midnight, right when I’m about to sleep), he would let out this big sigh which makes it so obvious that he doesn’t like it turned on.
I talked to him about the AC and how we can compromise on a temperature because I like it cold since it helps me sleep and we “agreed” about it. Though a few hours later, he would completely turn it off which would wake me up feeling hot (not the best feeling ever 🥲)
He’s just so passive aggressive and it sucks since I tried to communicate with him but to no avail. I can’t help but feel guilty now whenever I try to turn on the AC…

2023.06.08 18:18 Ccunning70 The kitchen faucet pressure suddenly dropped this week. Cleaned aerator, still low pressure. Ideas?

I have a small home with only a few faucets (kitchen, bathroom, shower, laundry and outdoor). The only faucet with low pressure is in my kitchen. I checked the aerator, in case it was clogged, but that did not help. The pressure is the same in both hot and cold (one handle, but if I adjust from hot to cold it doesn't change the pressure, but the temperature does change). I don't see any leaks or kinks in the hoses from the pipe to the faucet. At this point, should I replace the faucet, or is there something else I should look at first?

2023.06.08 18:15 0theFoolInSpring Tips and help on proper sourcing of the right materials

I have a tendency to use a lot of dragon's blood (the plant resin) and I have come to the painful realization that what is being supplied by a large number of different venders is a wide array of different stuff much of which does not work and seems to be garbage. My general experience is:
-Almost all of the pre-powdered stuff for sale anywhere is the wrong material and is useless. A lot of it seems to just be saw-dust with red food dye or the like -- it won't melt at the right temperature (or at all) and instead just starts to char without ever giving the proper incense smell, and produces dark smoke instead of light gray. Even suppliers whom I trust for other things including other forms of Dragon's blood resin seem to have faked or otherwise garbage pre-powdered dragon's blood even when it is advertised as "premium high quality" among a selection of lower quality options (what are those made out of then?)
-About half of the suppliers I have bought dragon's blood ink from just ship you repackaged regular-@$$ cheap red ink. This is usually easy to tell post-facto: dragon's blood is not water soluble while most generic red ink is, and when proper dragon's blood ink dries it stops being a vibrant red -- unlike most generic red inks which will maintain a pure-red color -- instead dragon's blood ink becomes a more brown with a hint of maroon upon drying (a final drying color almost like real blood.) Also the "spicy" aromas of the proper dragon's blood resin can be smelled in the proper ink, and about half the dragon's blood ink one can buy is completely odorless garbage.
-The "crack rocks" of dragon's blood that you can buy and grind up seem to have a much better success rate than the powder in my experience, but even there there is some ambiguity and inconsistency. All the "true" dragon's blood is supposed to come from the Dracaena species, but it has become acceptable (openly, people don't even consider this to be "faking" it, but an honest and legitimate solution) to source it from other species like rattan palms. Sure it is a red plant resin, but my experience is ... this is not the right stuff at all and yet it is everywhere. Additionally pretty much all of those "crack rocks" of dragon's blood, even if they contain the real deal, seem to be cut with something or other, sometimes quite heavily. I don't know what they are cut with (cheap epoxy maybe?) and it still seems to work even when they are cut pretty heavily, but you get a non-trivial amount of "burning plastic" smell in with the proper dragon's blood smell and I do worry about breathing that in as a result.
Do any of you have common sourcing issues with your standard reagents? If so which ones and how do you deal with it?
Anyone know what all the "crack rocks" of dragon's blood are cut with and if it is safe to be breathing that?
Is there a website where we can report good and bad sourcing for occult reagents and things so we can get good stuff and avoid bad?
I haven't reported any of the numerous ebay, etsy, etc... stores that have sold me complete trash in the above regards because I don't want to damage small well-intentioned little businesses and it is highly likely IMHO that the fake product they are selling was sold to them as authentic so it isn't on them that this happened and thus they shouldn't be punished. ... but what can be done about this that is proper and fair? I guess I can contact each of them and try to talk it out, but there are only so many hours in the day and to spend 30 minutes testing something and then many days corresponding with various people involved in supplying it every time you spent 5 minutes buying something is a bit too taxing on my limited time especially when I have to buy a bunch of things just to try and hope to find one authentic one amongst the mix.
Thoughts?

2023.06.08 18:14 PretttyPlant Suggestions: How to make late game more interesting

People often talk about how late game tends to get boring as you run out of things to do. I think the upcoming hunting/ranching/ crafting updates are likely meant to address some of these issues, but also that there are potentially more ways to make late game more interesting.

As a person with an unhealthy amount of hours in PZ, here are some suggestions. (If there are mods that address some of these things that I'm not aware of, please let me know):

- More impactful weather events. Floods, ice storms, hurricanes that break windows/kill crops/ destroy certain structures, etc.

- Disease (non-zombie ones). I.e. pneumonia, dysentery (from bad sanitation), plague (from eating or interacting with rodents, for example). Not always fatal, and mostly avoidable

- Hobbies - i.e., carving, painting. You could make little art pieces to decorate your base with, or to use as barter with NPCs and other players.

- Building materials: access to stone, clay, natural pigments, etc. Currently all player-made bases have to be built out of wood. Allowing players to craft stone blocks, clay tiles, and so on would make base-building way more interesting and dynamic

- Ambient effects of cold weather. This is more of a general change I wish would happen: currently, food rots at the same rate outside regardless of temperature, but I think it would make sense for food to be able to be kept outside longer without rotting when the temp is below zero.

- Aging. I've seen people discuss this before, and though I think it's unlikely it'll be implemented (because the time frame for it to be meaningful as a mechanic is in the what, thousands of hours?), it's still interesting as a concept

- Ruins. After a very long time (say years), buildings lose structural integrity and begin to fall apart. This would probably require a lot of coding changes (idk, I'm not a PZ coder) and buildings would have to be treated as dynamic objects rather than static set pieces, but I think it would be pretty sweet

I think all these are more or less in keeping with the existing character of the game. Please add your ideas I'm curious to see what other people want too.

2023.06.08 18:11 ghawthorne35 The Best Sustainable Eyewear Brands

It would be an understatement to say that our world has seen better days given the blazing wildfires in California, a string of tropical storms, and some of the highest recorded temperatures in history this summer. The good news is that there are practical ways that we can contribute to its preservation, and sustainable shopping is one of them.
A nice pair of sunglasses in Sri Lanka can make all the difference in the world! You can buy a pair of sunglasses online in Sri Lanka this summer that will shield your eyes from the sun, showcase your sense of style, and benefit Mother Earth. Uncertain about where to start? Then, have a look at this list of the top eco-friendly sunglasses companies that sell shades and contact lenses online.
See2see.
17.6 billion tonnes of plastic are thrown into the ocean every year. By 2050, all of the fish in the ocean will be outweighed by ocean plastic, according to Conservation International. Alarming figures like these served as the impetus for Sea2see, an Italian startup that creates "a statement of change" rather than just spectacles.
Sea2See collects waste materials like ropes and fishnets and uses them to make sustainable optical frames and sunglasses. They do this by working closely with fishermen's communities in 27 different regions of Spain and 10 coastal regions of Ghana. The company uses an upcycling approach to convert waste plastic into reusable raw materials, making waste a crucial component of its supply chain. When you wear a pair of their sunglasses, you are also doing your part to maintain the health of the oceans and the creatures who inhabit them.
Genusee.
Genusee, a company with its headquarters in Flint, Michigan, makes glasses out of recycled plastic water bottles from the ongoing water crisis. This programme not only saves waste but also helps the neighbourhood's economy by giving displaced workers jobs. Sunglasses from Genusee are completely UVA/UVB protected and oh-so-chic!
Dresden.
Dresden's sleek, plastic eyeglasses are heavily influenced by German design while having an Australian heritage. According to their website, "The paradox of German design is also the essence of Dresden's approach." "Both natural and technical, both enjoyable and useful.
"Dresden's most exciting point of difference is in the 'one shape fits all' modular design," claims Bonnie Hudson, head of communications. "The one timeless frame form is available in four different sizes and many colour combinations to complement virtually any face. To suit their mood or the situation, the wearer can switch out the interchangeable arms, front, and lenses.
Sunski.
Everyone may find a pair of sunglasses from Sunski, from fashionistas to outdoor enthusiasts! The varieties include aviator, clubmaster, round, and wayfarer. These comfortable sunglasses with recycled materials will keep your eyes protected.
MITA.
Miami-based company MITA creates eyewear that is inspired by the city's brilliant and colourful features, such as the murals on Wynwood Walls and the nearby street art. MITA, an organisation committed to "redefining the relationship between fashion and sustainability," upcycles five water bottles to make one pair of chic eco-glasses. With the aim of addressing the low recycling rates in both the US and Europe, they have recycled 81,000 water bottles as of this writing. Their entire line of eyeglasses is created from recycled materials, even the cases and cleaning rags.
Pala.
Pala is an eyewear brand that supports the community. For every pair purchased, eye treatment is provided to a person in need in Africa, which is home to 73% of the world's visually impaired people. This care is offered in the form of funding given to vision clinics, pharmacies, and screening programmes in collaboration with the worldwide non profit organisation Vision Aid Oversea. Every pair of sunglasses is cruelty-free and vegan. According to the Pala website, starting this year, all new models will be created with Italian bio-acetate, making the eyewear completely plant-based and 100% biodegradable.
The firm adds that as they continue on their path towards sustainable fashion, they will make all of their upcoming designs as eco-friendly as they can, including "both recycled acetate and bio-based designs housed in eco-friendly recyclable packaging and with carbon offset shipping."
Ballo.
Ballo started creating unisex sunglasses by hand in 2013 using recycled and reused materials, and since then, they have been in the sustainability industry. Every time a pair of sunglasses is sold, a tree is planted in Cape Town, South Africa, where all items are created and made. Ballo creates fashionable sunglasses from materials like cork and hemp, in addition to UV420 blue light-blocking lenses, which reduce eye strain from prolonged screen use.
Proof.
For Proof, which was established in 2020 by three brothers from Idaho (who acquired "sawdust in their veins" from working in the family sawmill), their goal of leaving the world in a better state than they found it entails handcrafting eyewear using eco-friendly materials like wood, recycled aluminium, recycled skateboard decks, and cotton-based acetate. In addition to eyewear, Proof also offers a variety of other items manufactured from these natural resources, including wallets, water bottles, reusable straws, and other accessories. The business, which started off with "one laptop and a rack of sunglasses" in a garage, has since expanded to build its own flagship location in Boise.
Waterhaul.
Another eyewear company attempting to clean up dangerous plastic trash from the ocean is Waterhaul. Using mechanical recycling and a "specialised injection moulding process," high-performing eyewear built entirely from recycled fishing nets is the end product. Fishing nets are made of sturdy materials, which is how they can withstand years of exposure to the ocean, but this also means that Waterhaul frames will have an equivalently long lifespan. The company, which has its headquarters in Newquay, Cornwall, claims to be working with Iberian fishermen to offer incentive programmes so they won't need to rely on landfills to get rid of their nets (and pay expensive disposal fees).
These ethical brands all care about their consumers' and the environment's wellbeing. Finding ways to sustain our world is essential given the growing human population. The decisions we make every day are where this shift begins for us.

Floaters crippling my plants below?
Newly planted 29 gal tank. Maybe a month old. Most of the plants under my floaters look like ass. I’ve been slowly increasing the lighting intensity each week.
Do I: A) just wait and let the floaters fill in the whole surface and then add more light B) try to remove some floaters C) Set the tank on fire, fake my death and change my name, move to Mexico?
The current from the HOB just seems to push whatever plants I have into the opposite side of the tank, so no matter how many floaters I have, something will always be shaded below it.
I use light ferts and currently light is at 60% for 9 hours (started at 25% for 8 hrs)

2023.06.08 18:08 Alternative-Ad4581 Why don’t people naturalize as USC Asap?

The July visa bulletin mentions as a strong likelihood of retrogression in F2A.
Mexico is 11/2018 and rest of the countries at 9/2020. Most Mexicans who filed F2A as a petitioner before 11/2018 would be eligible for naturalization and hence their dependent wouldn’t need to wait for a visa number availability and hence no long waits.
so why don’t people just naturalize as soon as they are eligible? Do people just feel satisfied with the Gc and hence don’t feel the need to become USC?

2023.06.08 18:06 spanielrassler Looking for for folks to share llama.cpp settings/strategies (and models) which will help write creative (interesting), verbose (long), true-to-prompt stories (plus a short discussion of --multiline-input flag)

Hi Guys,
I primarily use llama.cpp (although occasionally ooba or koboldcpp) for generating story ideas, snippets, etc to help with my writing (and for my general entertainment to be honest, with how good some of these models are). I primarily use 30b models since that’s what my Mac m2 pro with 32gb RAM can handle, but I’m considering trying some 65b models in ooba in runpod for the hell of it.
Anyway, I wanted to share the settings that have worked best for me with my most recent favorite model, which is guanaco 33b (q4_0), but more than that, hear what’s working best for others.
In my experience, some settings are extremely model-dependent, especially —temperature and —repeat_last_n, and repeat_penalty, but they also seem to be the most important to in the criteria I mentioned above.
For me, I’d say the most important one of the criterion I’ve listed above is verbosity, since creativity will usually go hand-in-hand with it — with a BIG caveat, and that is that the model doesn’t repeat itself. For me, that’s what makes guanaco 30b (and possibly 13b? Haven’t tried honestly) so great — it almost never get stuck in repetitive loops.
With guanaco 30b, if I happen to hit on a good seed generation, I’ve noticed that I can leave the model to its own devices for a few hours and come back and find some pretty great ideas, and fairly often I find myself laughing out loud at some of the creative bits it’s come up with. But most importantly, it just KEEPS WRITING more often than not. Of course a huge amount of what it generates is still sort of ‘boilerplate’ writing, obviously AI generated, etc, but that’s going to be true with any LLM, including even the vaunted GPT-4 ;)
The second most important criterion is staying true to the prompt, since what good is verbosity if it’s COMPLETELY random. I mean it’s a given that we’re dealing with 2048 context (for now), so going ‘off script’ is inevitable, but also desirable sometimes, of course. But in my case, my prompt files tend to be a list of story ideas that I want incorporated into the end result, rules for the world, etc. Maybe I’m off base with with approach though — please share yours!
So without further ado, here’s my MacOS command line parameters for llama.cpp.
./main -m [model] --repeat_penalty 1.15 --color -i -r "Human:" -f [prompt] -c 2048 --temp .8 --mirostat 2 --top_p 0.88 -b 512 --keep -1 -t 6 --repeat_last_n 512 --ignore-eos --interactive-first --multiline-input --mlock
First, I should mention that if you haven’t tried —multiline-input (originally named author mode), it’s sort of a game-changer for llama.cpp, and pretty much the main reason I don’t use GUI’s anymore (besides raw speed). With this flag enabled, ^c (control-c) allows you interrupt inference and type whatever you want in order to change the direction of the narrative and continue inference afterwards. So for example, if the model generates “at the end of the day the magician decided to pack up his things and” with the obvious intention of ending the scene, you can simply hit ^c and type something like “start over and cast an even more impressive spell that would create something the world had never seen before” and then type “/“ + [enter] to indicate that you want to continue inference on the same line where you left off (the alternative is to type “\” + [enter] to start inference on a new line). So now the direction of the story will likely jump back into the previous scene rather than wrap things up, or at least it becomes more likely.
BTW, it’s important to note that with the —multiline-input flag enabled, inference will never start until you type “\” or “/“ + [enter], so keep that in mind if it seems like llama.cpp is hung up after executing.
Next big question from me is, is anyone NOT using mirostat these days, and instead using top_k sampling? This is a case where I REALLY don’t understand what’s happening behind the scenes, but I just find that the writing is ‘better’ with mirostat sampling enabled. Verbosity increases, ‘intelligence’ increases, etc.
One thing that probably jumps out at people is the fact that I have —repeat_last_n set so high. The fact is that many (most?) models devolve into gibberish pretty quickly when using such a high value for this parameter, but for some reason guanaco is a champ in this regard and definitely performs better with that higher value (haven’t really experimented with even higher values to be honest).
I’m not sure that my reverse prompt is correct for this model, and I think instruct mode is called for since this is an Alpaca-based model, but honestly I haven’t noticed any difference leaving things as they are above. Again, I welcome any feedback on this subject since I’m just a user and most likely (definitely!) doing some things wrong. I truly don’t understand why instruct mode is called for and what difference it makes, since I haven’t noticed anything, but again, I’m probably missing something.
I’m sure I’m forgetting something but this post is getting long and rambly so I’ll stop here. I would love to hear about what I’m doing wrong or where I’m off base, what others have found works better, and any other suggestions / experiences people have in getting better results. Thanks!!
