Mock Steelers offseason

2023.01.19 14:14 ImpressSilent Mock Steelers offseason

Inspired by u/EzDuke's post. If you want to skip ahead and just see the mock, the Google Sheet is below as the actual writeup might be quite lengthy.
Link to the Google Sheet

Coaching Moves

So Matt Canada is by now getting another shot as offensive coordinator. While disappointing, I won't be changing that in my mock offseason.
Instead, I would hire a "senior offensive assistant" akin to how the Steelers hired Teryl Austin and Brian Flores as defensive assistants who helped out all over defense. In this mock, the Steelers hire Byron Leftwich under the titles of passing game coordinator and senior offensive assistant.
Yes, the Buccaneers offense was horrendous this year. But they went through many personnel changes and saw a decline in Brady's overall play. Byron Leftwich still had some part in creating an extremely successful Buccaneers passing attack the two years before that. For what its worth, the Buccaneers still had the 2nd most passing yards and 12 most passing TDs in the league this regular season, being hampered by the worst rushing offense in the league. Leftwich as a hiring makes even more sense as he has Pittsburgh connections. Furthermore, it might incentivize Matt Canada to try and keep his job while also adding help to the offensive coaching room.
It sounds like Brian Flores might be heading to the Cardinals as their Head Coach. To replace him, the Steelers hire Lovie Smith as their new senior defensive assistant. Lovie created the Tampa 2 defense that Mike Tomlin learned during his time as DB coach. He also fits the mold of a Steelers defensive assistant hiring as a former head coach or coordinator who was let go by their team. Lovie is primarily a 4-3 coach but his experience with linebackers is still valuable. Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, Derrick Brooks all had All-Pro seasons under him. His general experience as a defensive coordinator and head coach can also help.
Blaine Stewart the Assistant WRs coach is leaving to WVU. To replace him the Steelers hire Larry Smith, the WRs coach at Memphis, where Calvin Austin played.

Cap Moves

Currently the Steelers have exactly $1,648,747 in cap. This can increase with some cuts and restructures.
Lets start off with the cuts. I pretty much agree with Duke here on who to cut.
- Akhello Witherspoon played horribly. He is not the worth contract at all. That saves $4,000,000.
- Mitch Trubisky gets cut cause he is not worth his current contract and because he was whining about regretting signing here. That saves $8,000,000.
- Myles Jack is not worth his current contract but I do think he can return in some capacity. That saves another $8,000,000
- William Jackson III's contract is absolutely terrible, but we gave up peanuts for the trade. This saves $12,750,000
- Finally Gunner Olszewski. Patriot plant. Steven Sims is a much better option. This saves $2,000,000.
Now the restructures. Again, I agree with Duke here on who to restructure.
- Cam restructure saves $7,342,500.
- Chuks restructure saves $2,460,000
- Diontae restructure saves $3,460,000.
- Daniels restructure saves $3,585,000.
In total the Steelers save $51,597,500 and end up with $53,276,247 in total. Good enough amount to head into free agency.

Returning Free Agents

I used Over The Cap's free agent valuations to try and value what contracts and cap hits to give players, and went from there. They may not necessarily be accurate but I'm not a GM so I tried to be what I thought was fair.
I brought back most of the free agents the Steelers had. The big three for me were Sutton, Ogunjobi, and Edmunds. The rest were people I thought were good depth signings.
I also brought Myles Jack back on a smaller contract as the thought of having Robert Spillane start scares the shit out of me.
Finally, Alex Highsmith gets a massive extension that he's worth. He will solidify the Pittsburgh pass rush for the next few years. He got a 4 year $60,000,000 extension with a little higher AAV than Matt Judon's deal with the Patriots.

Outside Free Agents

I didn't want to add too many free agents but I decided to go ahead and sign a few contracts. Again I used Over The Cap's free agent valuations. The most notable being Bills LB Tremaine Edmunds which seems like a move that Steelers fans universally want. He would immediately be an upgrade over any of our current LBs and paired with Myles Jack would be a solid signing. He gets a 4 year, $68,000,000 contract. Just a little less than Roquan but still quite a bit.
Next the Steelers add Lions G Evan Brown at a 3 year, $15,750,000 contract to replace Kevin Dotson. The left side of the line needs improvement in my opinion and while Dan Moore showed improvement throughout the season, I think Kevin Dotson has ran out of time in Pittsburgh. Evan Brown filled in for Lions G Halapoulivaati Vaitai and proved he is capable as a starter. But he also won't break the bank.
We see a reunion in Pittsburgh with Bud Dupree who comes in with a 2 year $5,000,000 prove it deal. Dupree would be a great third edge rusher and a rotation piece to an already solid pass rush. With his injuries in the past few years, reduced snaps would probably benefit him for a while.
Finally, the Steelers sign Drew Lock as a backup to Kenny. Lock sucked as a starter but I think he can be a solid and cheap backup. He will hopefully not have to see the field too much.

Draft

I am using PFN's draft simulator. I find that PFF values players completely differently from most other simulators. I haven't done much draft research yet, so these aren't perfect picks but rather positions I think are important. Keep in mind that draft stocks will rise and drop after the Combine and Pro Days so this will likely look very different.
- 1.17: Cam Smith (CB, South Carolina): He's quick and has good instincts in coverage. He also has great ball skills. He has the chance to compete for a starting spot or can develop behind Levi Wallace.
- 2.32: Josh Downs (WR, North Carolina): One of the best slot receivers in college football. He had solid production throughout college. He has elite speed, has been used as a great red zone target his entire career (Something Kenny could use) and has a great route tree. He is somewhat short however and will also need to work on drops.
- 2.49: Siaki Ika (DT, Baylor): Hell of an athlete and very strong. He projects as a nose tackle in the league. He can battle Montravius Adams for the starting spot and shore up the D-line for the future.
- 3.80: Blake Freeland (OT, BYU): A developmental tackle who can serve as depth and possible develop into a starter if Dan Moore doesn't cut it.
Rest are all depth pieces or special teams players who might not even make the roster.

Final Thoughts

This is a highly idealistic mock. I don't expect the Steelers to go this crazy but I do expect they will make moves to improve the team. I would love to hear this sub's criticisms!

Christian Holmes recovered a muffed punt by Velus Jones deep in Chicago territory to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Brian Robinson midway through the fourth quarter, and the Washington Commanders stopped a four-game losing streak, hanging on to beat the Chicago Bears 12-7. The Commanders did just enough to come away with their first win since beating Jacksonville in the opener and handed the Bears (2-4) their third straight loss.

Some notes:
  1. Like the previous two years, I have assigned equal weight to research and primary care rankings and simply added them together to make the total score.
  2. Every school on USNWR is covered, including those that have "Ranking Not Published (RNP)" designations.
  3. Though the residency director ratings may be better than the aggregate USNWR rankings, there are reasons to be skeptical. How are program directors polled on these rankings? It is hard to imagine many PDs sitting down and forming a rank list of 185 institutions with any kind of significant reproducibility or resolution. More transparency in the methodology of these ratings would be useful.
  4. Please let me know if there are typos or other errors and I will fix them ASAP.
  5. bold step score = updated from last year
also for the record, I stand by what I've said before - While speculation about this may yield interesting results, I'd like to remind people that USNWR rankings have faced very legitimate criticisms and this study showed that "Our results suggest that residents' medical school of origin is weakly correlated with clinical competency as measured by a standardized OSCE."

2021.07.26 17:00 TheRoyalCyclone Does Oklahoma Really Have More 11 am Kicks? A Study

With everything going on around realignment, and Oklahoma using 11 am kickoffs as an excuse for this, I decided to do a little research. I documented the number of each Big 12 teams 11 am kickoffs beginning with the 2015 season. An important note is that I did not include cancelled games in any of the data, so there may have been games scheduled for 11 am kickoffs that were not played. Bold indicates the most 11 am kickoffs that season.
TLDR: Nope.
ISU KU KSU OSU OU UT TCU TTU BU WVU
2015 4 7 3 0 3 5 2 2 4 6
2016 5 5 5 6 5 5 4 2 3 4
2017 6 6 3 4 1 4 3 7 5 6
2018 4 6 3 3 4 3 4 4 3 3
2019 5 5 3 3 5 2 3 6 1 5
2020 3 4 5 3 3 5 4 2 1 6
Total 27 33 22 19 21 24 20 23 17 30
In the last 6 seasons, to no surprise, Kansas has played the most 11 am games. Meanwhile, Oklahoma comes in with the 7th most 11 am kicks. A far cry from what their fanbase (along with the coaching staff and administration) make it sound like. Also during this time, Oklahoma has never had the most 11 am kicks of the Big 12 teams. The closest they came to holding this title was twice, in both 2016 and 2019 when they tied for second both times.
But what about when you compare OU to other blue bloods?
In the same time period, Alabama has played 10 11 am games; Clemson has played 19; Ohio State has played 26; Georgia has played 20; and Florida has played 22. Maybe the pastures aren't greener in the SEC? Obviously money is the real reason behind this move, but OU fans seem to believe 11 am kicks are a big reason behind this. If they really buy into that, I don't think they are going to be very happy.
Does it impact recruiting?
247 Class Ranking # of 11 am Kicks
19 3
8 5
9 1
6 4
12 5
10 3
There really is not much of a correlation here at all. OU has had fairly consistent recruiting in this time span, while being out recruited by teams with similar number (or more in the case of Ohio St) 11 am kickoffs.

Some notes:
  1. Like last year, I have assigned equal weight to research and primary care rankings and simply added them together to make the total score.
  5. I added step 1 and step 2 scores when they were available (still updating this fwiw)
also for the record, I stand by what I said on SDN - While speculation about this may yield interesting results, I'd like to remind people that USNWR rankings have faced very legitimate criticisms and this study (Gollehon NS, Stansfield RB, Gruppen LD, et al. Assessing Residents' Competency at Baseline: How Much Does the Medical School Matter?. J Grad Med Educ. 2017;9(5):616–621. doi:10.4300/JGME-D-17-00024.1) showed that "Our results suggest that residents' medical school of origin is weakly correlated with clinical competency as measured by a standardized OSCE."

2021.03.28 19:27 ajseventeen One of these teams is not like the other...

In a thread here on CFB the other day, I was thoroughly nerd-sniped by a comment remarking that West Virginia's membership in the Big XII is a top-tier geographical oddity, perhaps only topped by UTEP in Conference USA. Of course, school locations are publicly-available information, so I figured I could verify that claim. I recorded the latitude and longitude of each D1 school, and used those, along with each school's primary conference affiliation, I found the average latitude and longitude of each conference, and designated these as the "average" school for that conference. I then found the distance from each school to the "average" member of its conference as the crow flies, and recorded that value. Included are the "average" school locations for each FBS conference:

Conference Avg. Latitude Avg. Longitude Description
American 33.8957 -87.8250 About 75mi WNW of Birmingham, AL
ACC 36.6231 -80.4637 About 40mi West of Martinsville, VA
Big XII 35.9287 -95.4065 About 40mi ESE of Tulsa, OK
Big Ten 41.2545 -85.7667 About 35mi West of Fort Wayne, IN
C-USA 32.6585 -88.5167 About 25mi NNE of Meridian, MS
MAC 41.4453 -83.6591 Basically Bowling Green State (it's literally within 5mi)
MWC 37.0994 -116.8016 About 130mi NW of Las Vegas (along US-95)
Pac-12 39.4012 -117.2462 About 10mi SW of Austin, NV
SEC 34.0989 -87.6704 About 45mi S of Muscle Shoals, AL
Sun Belt 32.8837 -88.5976 About 15mi S of Macon, MS
Oddly enough, the SEC and American average schools are only about 16.5 miles apart, and the Sun Belt and C-USA are even closer, at 16mi.
As it turns out, West Virginia (879.9mi from average) is a top-tier oddity, trailing only Hawai'i (2678.0mi MWC, 2288.1mi Big West*) and UTEP (1052.0mi). Here are the closest to and farthest from average 25 schools:

There were a few points that I thought were interesting to note:
This was definitely interesting to put together, and I'd be happy to answer any questions or requests for additional data/information. Hope y'all enjoy, and happy offseason!
*Hawai'i is in the Big West for all sports except football, where they play in the Mountain West. Because the Big West is their "primary" conference affiliation, that's where they are according to most of these numbers; however, that excludes them from FBS, which doesn't really seem fair. So i re-ran the numbers with Hawai'i as a MWC member, solely to get their MWC distance (yes, this affects where the average MWC school is, but I'm just not that worried about it). I did the same thing for Navy as well (149.9mi Patriot, 659.5 American). Notre Dame got put with the ACC; they're basically members there at this point anyway.
EDIT: Per the requests of u/Salmon4 and u/daredassdude, I'm adding a table with the z-scores of each school relative to their conference. This provides a measure of how different a school is from the typical member of its conference. For example, West Virginia has a large z-score because most of the Big 12 is (sort of) close together in the midwest, while WVU is way off east. UTEP has a slightly lower z-score than WVU, despite being further from its conference center, because CUSA tends to be more spread out than the Big 12, meaning that UTEP's distance isn't quite as "unexpected" as WVU's is. Because I changed a few things to make this easier, I'm also including Lat/Long and raw distances from conference average for all of the FBS schools in this table, because I can. The table is missing a few schools because they play most sports in non-FBS conferences, but I'm just gonna ignore that for now.

Wtf is this map? And why are there multiple players on it? Unless it's just people sniping Jerma and Star? But then I cannot comprehend why someone would make this map and then why someone would host that map on their server?
