2023.03.31 20:25 alexl_4 $AQST - Long-term high-risk, high-reward, pharma play w/ potential for +1000% return

$AQST - Aquestive Therapeutics is a biotech company developing orally administered products to treat seizures, allergic reactions, and other CNS conditions.
Enter Aquestive's Lead Drug, AQST-109...
Now for the real potential golden egg. Aquestive is working on an orally administered drug to treat allergies that is a direct alternative to EpiPen's autoinjector. The clear and obvious benefit here is that the patient would not have to stab themselves with a needle in order to administer the drug. EpiPen autoinjectors have been known to have failures (https://www.center4research.org/epipen-maker-failed-investigate-product-flaws-associated-patient-deaths-fda-says/), and also require some degree of manual skill in order to administer. Compare this with ease of oral administration via dissoluble film strip, and it doesn't take a leap of imagination to comprehend why one method of treatment would be preferred over the other.
AQST-109 has already shown positive pharmacokinetic (efficacy of drug in a living organism, measured by dosage, drug plasma concentration, distribution, time to absorption, and many more measured factors) results in their initial head-to-head study with EpiPen (https://aquestive.com/aquestive-therapeutics-announces-positive-epiphast-ii-trial-data-for-aqst-109-when-compared-to-epipen/). Latest headlines and news re-affirms that they are publishing the positive data to the scientific community
The Epinephrine market is absolutely massive. "The global epinephrine market is projected to grow from $1.75 billion in 2022 to $3.63 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 11.0% in forecast period." (https://www.fortunebusinessinsights.com/epinephrine-market-104291). Estimated fair-value SP is anywhere between $7-$12. A very rough estimate equation to calculate market value would be = cost per vial (treatment) * number patients * market penetration (factor of market adoption 0.0 - 1.00). Number for this equation are wildly speculative, so it's hard to even project. I'm looking more at the SP pre-Libervant approval, and how it was expected to be $9+ on/at approval. However, that did not pan out and we are where we are now. AQST-109 is a different kettle of fish with no direct competitor and a significantly larger market for the drug's application.
Financials and estimated SP targets
Aquestive has continued to shore up their financials. They have drastically cut spending, and are continuing to be paid for other drugs in their pipeline, as well as secure new deals for drug sales. The past few ER's they have surprised and beat the street estimate significantly.
Losses have been significantly less than estimated. 2023 will be a very big year for AQST as the stage 3 trials and studies will take place. The projected timeline for results to be submitted for FDA approval are year end 2023 or sometimes early 2024.
Analysts have a projected a price target of $7-$10 (https://www.marketbeat.com/stocks/NASDAQ/AQST/price-target/).
Final thoughts!
With a current SP of over 1$ at time of writing, this stock has the potential for 1000%+ upside. If you don't mind investing on the pretense of future successful clinical trials, and an FDA approval, while holding shares for 1-2 years, then the potential payoff is worth it IMHO. I have been dollar cost averaging down, and I'm holding nn,nnn shares until the results of the AQST-109 pipeline are submitted for FDA approval sometime in 2023-2024.

2023.03.30 05:14 Grand_Pomelo5330 The parallel world of severe asthma

I wrote this after an asthma attack earlier this week, dreading the flare-up that was coming. For the past few years it means weeks of getting back to normal. I'm currently in grad school, and bike mentioned is an ebike, fyi. Always gotta be accessible. It meant a lot to write this, and thought some here would appreciate it too. It's rough, but from the heart.
The parallel world of severe asthma
As my asthma has worsened, I more and more feel like I’m living parallel to the people around me. In Tokyo, with my unusual hours and outsider status as a foreigner, I already felt set apart from society, so the feeling wasn’t so intense. Yes, I might have missed the occasional book club meeting or invitation from a friend, but I didn’t have daily reminders of how my life had to be considered so differently from those surrounding me. Before Tokyo, while asthma was a consideration in my life, it only came up around hikes or when I pulled my inhaler out after running too fast for too long. It set me apart, but only sometimes.
Now, the time I feel most separate is when I open my school email. Today alone I got invitations to:
• The grad student sports day, which I immediately deleted. I haven’t been able to run across the street without thinking for 3 years. There’s no way in hell I could participate.
• A round table with a CEO. I RSVP’d, but with the knowledge that I’ll likely have to email a cancellation to the event coordinator when a flareup extends or starts or I get an asthma attack.
• A Q&A before an event I’m attending. I RSVP’d, but later realized it’s held at a separate venue from the event, about a three-minute walk away. If I’m feeling bad, I won’t be able to go, and if I’m mobile but not great, I’ll have to ride my bike to both locations in order to minimize walking and be able to attend.
• A meeting with a prof today. I had to ask to meet virtually due to an asthma attack around 11am. He said we could reschedule if I wasn’t feeling well, and I had to go into a brief health history so he would know there was a high chance I’d have to cancel a rescheduled appointment as well, so we just went virtual.
• A school event on Saturday where we paint a map of the United States at an elementary school. Yesterday I ran into a classmate promoting it, and had to tell him I can’t RSVP because I have no idea what my health status will be by Saturday, and lo and behold today I had an asthma attack that will likely take a week or more to resolve.
• Employer visits. I haven’t been to one in months because I’ve had to save all my energy for attending classes, or I wouldn’t even be able to do that.
• So many various interesting talks that I don’t even think about attending anymore because I always seem to be sick whenever there’s something I actually want to do.
After my attack, I immediately emailed both the prof I was scheduled to meet and my prof for tomorrow’s class. It’s a public speaking class (I didn’t realize that when I signed up, I thought it was for writing, my effin’ bad), and we’re exchanging speeches with another person before class, so I need to give my prof warning. In addition, the class is held in a building where it takes me three times as long to walk to the class area as anyone else because it’s in the far back. The bathrooms, of course, are by the exit, so I had to hold it for an entire class a couple weeks ago because I wouldn’t be able to make it there, back, present, and still be at all functioning.
I texted some friends about watching a basketball game at a bar on Friday, and then immediately regretted it, realizing that due to the attack today, I’ll probably be housebound until Monday, unless I’m lucky and things improve quickly. Checking the forecast, which is showing turbulent weather, rain, and general changes, there’s probably not a chance in hell. I still haven’t texted them that, actually, I probably can’t do it, because I just don’t want to yet, and it doesn’t matter too much, since we’re already planning on coming to my house to watch a movie anyway, thank God.
I also texted my friend in a student organization to let her know I wasn’t coming to the meeting tonight after all. We’d talked yesterday, with her asking after me, and I told her I’d finally be able to come today after more than a month of absences due to my health. Welp, never mind. I then had to text another friend I’m supposed to meet for dinner tomorrow, and see if she can come to my house for dinner instead. We’re not very close, so it’s a little awkward, but it’d be nice if she’d be down.
Other things I got to experience today:
• Sitting, teeth gritted, fingers dug into my palm for 30 seconds as I got a very painful shot (Tezspire) that will hopefully make this situation a little fucking better. Oh God, I really hope so. I’ll get to keep getting that once a month for who knows how long. (Talking from a week later, it seems like the second dose has made a big difference. My attack recovery took just two days instead of two weeks!)
• Not get napkins at a restaurant because it wasn’t a good idea to add some extra walking as I realized that I really was asthmatic.
• Regret going downstairs to work on homework because going up to the stairs to the bathroom meant that I needed to rest for a good fifteen minutes.
• Struggle through brain fog to be able to do my coursework.
• Feel tight chested just from getting up to pour myself tea.
• Ask my roommate to go pick up a package at the front door because I couldn’t handle it.
I’m sure there’s more I’m just not thinking of. I’ve been trying to be clearer about how severe my illness is. Instead of telling people I have asthma, I’ve been saying “I have severe asthma/I have severe uncontrolled asthma,” and I put some weight on it. It’s been helping. I’ve been extending conversations a little longer when people ask about it. I’m not trying to create pity, but help people understand that it seriously effects my life, and that when I have to be noncommittal, or haven’t been to school, it’s because of a chronic condition that won’t get better quickly.
All of this adds up to feeling like I’m existing parallel to the people around me. They RSVP to events, knowing they’ll attend unless they just don’t want to. They organize sports days without thinking about all the people that don’t have a chance in hell of being able to participate. They don’t think a thing of it when I don’t come to class or am walking slowly in the hall. They feel buoyant to me almost, walking around not thinking if they can make it down the hall without a rest. I understand they have complexities to their lives that I don’t understand, but hearing “feel better” when I know I’m not going to for a week or two, then maybe have a week of feeling ok-ish before another flare-up makes me feel like an alien.
I’ve been able-bodied before. I know how little conception I had of the mental burden disability brings. I know how blithely they take advantage of their bodies. I love my body. It feels like a partner in a war with me, constantly battling against the evils of dust mites and cat hair. We’re united in this journey, but holy fuck are we exhausted. I make it to class, work in hand (or not), and feel so tired knowing I’m going to have to balance caring for myself with my commitments for another week. My conception doesn’t really stretch much further than that, except to hope that in six months, when I’m finally done ramping up with allergy shots, maybe I won’t feel like this. The time between then and now draws out in front of me, joyful and terrifying. Perhaps I’ll start improving? I know I’ll have good times with friends, whether they’re in my house or elsewhere when I’m feeling ok. I know I’ll learn a lot. I also know I’ll face walks up a flight of stairs that will take three minutes. I know that I’ll face classes or meetings or lectures where I have to concentrate to be able to sit up straight, barely able to pay attention while it feels like my scalp is shrinking around my skull and my chest is like a cloud crushed in a vice grip.
That after that class I’ll have to make a thousand little journeys: from seat to door, from door to that tile, to the end of that bench, to that next door, to that little tree, to that fence, to my bike, all with a little rest in between, letting everybody outpace me as they move, unthinking about the miracle of their body’s wellness, forward past me. I’ll probably listen to music –nothing too exciting or my body will try to dance without permission, every extraneous movement a danger beyond the capacity of my lungs – and let myself flow along to the melody in my head, while my feet shuffle ever so slowly along, not lifting them too high so as not to exert any extra energy. Every moment of this is defined by a colossal effort not to panic. My body wants to; IT CAN’T GET AIR! But I have to force my breath to calm, even if it’s shallow, and focus all my concentration on the next small goal. Occasionally, a flash of the daunting journey to bike, to home, to up to my room, and to lying face down in my bed, sparks in my mind, and a strong current of fear and dread runs through me before I tamp it down and keep moving at my snail’s pace, or stand in place, eyes closed, fingers flexing and curling, shoulders tensed, calves tensed, toes curled, as I squeeze the big scary emotions back into a small ball in my core and continue the difficult journey to safety and rest.
Is this a world I knew existed before? No.
Am I happy I know it now? With the tiniest, most empathetic sliver of my heart. This parallel world is mine, and it’s an anguished one. I’ve gotten some good out of it. I’ve gained empathy. I truly understand my own grit and determination and sisu after this. I told my doctor about an asthma attack I remember having in Tokyo: I went too fast up some stairs, took my inhaler and sat, and felt better 30 minutes later. He said, “That must have been scary.” No! I remember that asthma attack so fondly that it has almost a nostalgic golden glow about it. The scary asthma attacks: the panicked gasps while stuck in a door I’m not capable of opening fully, being exhausted in a coffee shop from walking 3 steps to a bathroom, laying back on a hotel bed and my vision blurring to black around the edges, those scare me. Having to walk out of the ER, alone in a foreign country, to flag down a cab, shaky from IV steroids and unsure if I can make the 30 meters, that scares me. Barely being able to walk or talk as soon as the first drop of rain falls, at a zoo, at a temple, teaching class, those times scare me.
Sometimes I realize that the people around me would call an ambulance or have their family rush them to the hospital if they felt the way I do right now. It feels like we’re walking in two worlds. Mine is weighty with the distress I’m currently feeling, or haunted by the specters of disturbing possibilities: a flight of stairs, a sharp hill, a quick run to make the bus, a note held too long in choir, all things that have kept me housebound for days to weeks. Theirs is what I had before: full of joys and worries (just as mine is) but without that constant central dread and weight and worrying and calculation that comes along with my illness. I don’t know whether to envy or hate them.
What I do know is that we exist together and apart. They don’t understand, and I don’t really want them to. They shouldn’t have to. I wouldn’t wish these dark experiences on them, as much as I wish that I didn’t feel so alone in all of it. Perhaps one day I’ll once again be able to blithely join a game of badminton without worrying about whether I have my rescue inhaler in my bag. Maybe I’ll even just be able to RSVP to a lecture without worrying whether I’ll be able to make it there without severe distress. I yearn for that future, which the doctor tells me is possible, but I yearn in tiny, quick jolts. Just an eighth of a second, then back to accepting the reality I’m in at the moment, knowing that it’s too painful to dwell on in case I don’t get better.
In reality, I regretted reading this out loud after writing it because I was worried I’d pushed the limits of what I can handle right now. And cried after getting an email from my prof for tomorrow’s class because she was so kind with her accommodations. This parallel, murky, dark world that makes me so damn appreciate of the people around me, even if they can’t understand.

2023.03.30 04:15 DIYgirlAR Guest has 4 trips, no reviews

(TLDR at the bottom)
I had a guest book that Air BNB showed had 4 trips, but no reviews. This guest was a total pain in the ass. Night 1: 9pm he requested extra blankets. The unit has extra sheets but the extra blankets were already put on the beds because the weather was forecasted to be extra cold. I took him 2 additional blankets about 30 minutes after he asked for them. Night 2: 8:15 pm The sink is draining slow. I told him that I would come look at it the next day and agreed on a time. 9:30 pm He said that the alarm clock was broken and he needed one because his kids woke up at 5am and didn't know what time it was. I went and bought a new alarm clock and brought it to him. Day 3: 8 am- I see the guest's wife go outside and urinate by the side of the building. 10 am- Need to switch out the blankets, son woke up with bug bites. I told him that I would bring him new blankets and I have a no pet policy, maybe he had an allergy to the detergent. The sink ended up draining slow because they shoved the strainer too far down and the stopper was stuck. I found no bugs. Day 4: 9pm Guest sends pics of bug bites on his son and says it is flea bites and the couch has dog hair behind the cushions. I tell him that if he wants to leave that I would refund him for the remaining nights. He said that they would tough it out since they only had 2 nights left. He then asked if I had an air mattress. I brought him one with new sheets. Day 5: I sent him $100 because I felt bad that someone must have snuck in a dog previously. The guest never said anything. Day 6: The guest checked out and left a mess.
TLDR: Guest had an issue every day of his stay until I finally caved and gave him $100. He has 4 stays and no reviews. Do you think he does this every time he stays somewhere? I have 19 hours left to leave him a review. He has not left one for me yet either.

2023.03.23 16:40 RockTheGlobe Weather app with pollen info?

As a seasonal allergy sufferer, I appreciate knowing the pollen count so I can more accurately figure out what’s happening when I play my daily game of “COVID, cold or allergies?” That said, I’m finding that most iOS weather apps don’t have this information. Weatherbug does, but the forecast and temperature accuracy is not great in my area. The stock Apple Weather app doesn’t, Foreca doesn’t, Weawow doesn’t… I’ve run through a number of apps and keep coming back to Weatherbug for that one feature.
Can anyone recommend a reliable iOS weather app that includes pollen info? Preferences are for a free app that also has an iPad version, but those are negotiable for me.

There's sunrise/sunset/moon activity, allergies as well as pollutants, integrated Google calendar (set to the 3-week rolling option), ToDoist list (I use their browser extension from any computer to update anytime/anywhere around the house), 3 news sources, radar, weekly forecast (now set to Apple from Dark Sky), also utilizing the 'Night Shift' sunrise/sunset option as suggested on the DAK Blog here - Using an ASUS 27" monitor on a rotating 'Arm.'
Weather radar (USA) is from https://radar.weather.gov, NOT Windy, Rainviewer, etc. They always caused me problems. This one works great and is stable/consistent, unlike the others. Notice: I cropped a rectangle rotating 'picture' to cover the upper area of the weather radar iFrame, since it has this annoying white statistical area when you integrate it into a block. This way, there's a nice picture covering the above area and it only shows the motion radar itself. I explain to someone how to integrate it here.
Finally, since I assume the founder and DAK admins might see this post, may I give a simple suggestion? Please create the ability to have 'checkboxes' for the news sources so users can choose which ones they like. This way, if users don't want to see certain news sources, we can check 3-4-5 or more of the ones we like, and if one goes down (VERY common) DAK Pi software can simply replace the downed feed with one of the ones we have checked. Think: A Randomizer of sorts. This would take care of the endless issue of news feeds going down all.the.time.
Hope this example helps others who are looking for ideas on what to do with their board!

2023.03.10 03:57 moises8war What are some natural remedies which work for you to battle Austin's allergens?

I understand one can buy pills for this pretty much anywhere. I understand there are Claritin, Allegra, and Zyrtec. Each one of these could come with its side effects.
A few years ago, for example, Claritin caused me constipation. What can I do to endure the season better through natural remedies?
The following article claims pineapple and apples work as natural antihistamines (to my understanding, this is what Zyrtec is): https://www.healthline.com/health/allergies/best-natural-antihistamines
According to this KXAN page, Austin's list of allergens includes:
Are there different natural remedies for each? Would exercise help? Is it just about eating the right things to beef up my immune system? Just wondering what has worked for y'all? Every year I load up on medication and allergy pills, but something about that doesn't feel right.

2023.03.02 10:17 ResponsibleAerie4611 Food Intolerance Products Market - Forecast(2023 - 2028)

Thefood intolerance products marketwas valued at $22.5 billion in the year 2020 and is posited to grow at a CAGR of 5.6% over the forecast period of 2021-2026. Food Intolerance products are primarily created and curated for individuals who have difficulty eating certain types of products; for example, dairy, gluten, and sugar are some of the most common allergens. Food intolerance products are created by using the best alternative for the said allergen; for example, soy milk or soy formula is most commonly used in place of milk for those who are lactose intolerant. Diabetic food is yet another example of a food intolerance product. People diagnosed with diabetes should not consume sugar of any form; the products are specially created by using artificial sweeteners instead of fructose or natural sugar. Caffeine products are widely used in applications such as energy drinks, teas, and coffee in daily lives. Although 400mg of caffeine is within one’s limit to consume daily, certain people are allergic to maybe even 5mg. The sensitivity of caffeine is linked to genetics or an inefficient metabolism. Rapid heartbeat, anxiety, restlessness are some of the common symptoms which are seen post caffeine intake. Gluten food allergy is prevalent nowadays, and it happens when a person is allergic to the proteins of wheat, barley, rye, or triticale. An autoimmune disease known as celiac is associated with a gluten allergy; when people suffering from this disease consume gluten, the immune system attacks the digestive system, and the repercussion of this can be fatal. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a milder form of the former. It is a gluten intolerance reaction, and approximately 0.5% to 13% of the entire population has the tendency. Salicylates are a naturally occurring chemical found in most foods in consume, fruits, vegetables, coffee, spices, nuts, and honey. Apart from the food, it also found in medications and used as a food preservative.
Download Report Sample
Moreover, altogether avoiding the salicylates is a rugged option; people who are allergic can opt for food where its presence is on the lower side. Fermentable Oligosaccharides, commonly known as FODMAP, is a short-chain carbohydrate present in apples, fruit cheeses, honey, and others. The small intestine cannot absorb the said product, and it passes on to the large intestine. The bacteria present in the significant intestine break or ferments the FODMAP, thereby causing gas and bloating to an individual. The food intolerance market will grow steadily due to the rising presence of Celiac and Crohn’s disease, along with the increasing awareness of such products for a healthy life.

Electronic Tongue
Electronic tongues can eliminate interferents' impact and help differentiate highly complex samples. These can be broths from various stages of fermentation; they have practically endless potential uses. The electronic tongue is an analytical instrument comprising an array of nonspecific, low-selective, chemical sensors with high stability and cross-sensitivity to different species in solution. Also, it is an appropriate method of PARC and/or multivariate calibration for data processing. The operational concept was influenced by biological recognition. It gathers data using arrays of non-specific sensors on the tongue or nose and then processes it in the brain.
Electronic tongues use artificial intelligence and chemometric techniques to accomplish the same task. It is namely to distinguish, recognize, or quantify the sample. The first sensor arrays of this type were introduced in the 1990s. They were primarily used for the measurement of ions and heavy metals as well as the assessment of flavour and food product deterioration. When using human expert panels is impractical or inappropriate, it is advantageous to mimic human taste because:
As in automatic process control, conditions of the process, particularly on an industrial scale.
Samples that are dangerous or in an extreme state, such as repeatedly sampling medications and pharmaceuticals.
Economic factors.
Sensors Types and the Resulting Data
Sensor Types
The electronic tongue systems use a variety of sensors. This includes electrochemical (potentiometric, amperometric, voltammetric, impedimetric, and conductometric), gravimetric, and optical (absorbance, luminescence, reflectance, etc.). The perfect sensor matrix would include both cross-sensitive and selective sensors. Cross-sensitivity is the capacity of a sensor to react consistently to a variety of distinct analytes in the solution. This characteristic is present in biological recognition systems with a small variety of partially or non-selective sensors. Olfactory and gustatory receptors provide complex data patterns. It has numerous separate cross-sensitive responses. Incredibly, biological systems can identify thousands of molecules with identical structures.
However, solely cross-sensitive sensors have lesser prediction skills than a mixed selective/cross-selective matrix. Electronic tongues used in automated flow systems can provide additional kinetic data about the sample. Electronic tongue systems are typically constructed with a few too many sensors of a single type. The most popular types are potentiometric and voltammetric.
Voltammetry is only helpful for redox-active substances, even though it can provide higher-order information about the kinetics of the reaction. Potentiometric sensors, however, are perceptive to charged molecules. With these complementary qualities, hybrid electronic tongues combining both techniques can soon come into the stream.
Resulting Data
Even if the sample's background radically changes, combining data from various sensor types can help identify a particular drug's fingerprint. Thus, improving classification and identification. Multitransduction, or measuring different sensor qualities, enables this to complete the work. Simple data fusion from physically distinct optical and electrochemical sensors is another option.
Even though, today it does not appear to be a severe threat to sensor arrays with a few dozen of sensors running out of computational power. However, excessive growth in the number of transducers can still cause issues. Too many matrices and careless data handling can quickly lead to over-fitting of the produced models, which will begin to search for the ideal match for the training data set rather than spotting trends.
Commercial Systems
Toko and colleagues created the first electronic tongue sold on the market. Based on Toko's concept, taste sensing systems from Intelligent Sensor Technology Inc. in Atsugi-shi, Kanagawa, Japan, has seven potentiometric electrodes with lipid-polymeric membranes. The latter is the most recent model and was created for use both in laboratories and as a network system for quality control. It allows for detecting the five basic tastes and flavour characteristics like "richness" and "sharpness." Both techniques primarily serve to identify and gauge the strength of each flavour in food products and medicines. Astree II is designed to distinguish samples based on their taste characteristics. It has 7 ion-selective field effect transistors (ISFET). Examples of its use in process monitoring, food recognition, taste evaluation, quality control, and the pharmaceutical business.
The Alpha MOS company also sells an electronic nose and a visual analyzer for analyzing colour and shape in addition to taste devices. The PVC and polyurethane membranes used in the Multiarray Chemical Sensor (McScience Inc., Suwon, Korea) are selective for the ions H+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, NH4+, NO3, and Cl. The Sensor System (St. Petersburg, Russia) has seven potentiometric ion-selective sensors. In addition to commercial solutions, customers can also request flavour evaluation services. When developing new goods for the food sector, Aissy Inc. from Tokyo, Japan, offers an accurate study of food products using its taste sensor and associated software. This is especially true for researchers who are unfamiliar with sensor matrix technology.
Nature Inspired Sensors
The same transduction properties as in the case of conventional chemosensors can be used to apply Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIP). These are present in biosensors and chemical sensors in the sensor matrix. Although biosensors are sometimes an example of very specificity, many respond with a particular class of compounds (sugars, phenols, etc.). Additionally, they frequently also reveal information about a large number of additional species, specifically inhibitors. MIP sensors can even detect a particular molecule. However, they frequently also offer cross-selectivity, making them ideal for electronic tongue applications.
BioElectronic Tongue
The array was outfitted with multiple biosensors in 1999. The given electronic tongue can benefit from high selectivity and specificity. Also, other sensors can aid in lessening the influence of a complex and shifting backdrop or interferents. Modern biosensors use a wide variety of recognition components. This includes nucleic acids, aptamers, antibodies, cells, phages, and enzymes. The directed recognition reaction of the sensor can be sped up through enzymatic modification. Additionally, this type of sensor makes it possible to get extra kinetic data.
When considered during the chemometric analysis, enzyme inhibition and catalyzed reaction accelerations provide valuable background data that can enhance the final discrimination considerably. Biosensors in electronic tongue systems have applications in science, the food industry, and agriculture. Using a similar trapping technique, the same research team created sensors based on enzymes and chemical catalysts (bisphthalocyanine). This three-electrode matrix was adequate for quantifying six different phenolic compounds and the differentiation of wine musts based on their Total Polyphenolic Index.
Additionally, Bioinspired Electronic tongues were used to analyze herbicides. These are typically evaluated using enzyme inhibition experiments. As the enzyme can be present by heavy metals, a wide variety of pesticides, and other species, the major issue with the inhibition assay is its utter lack of specificity. In this situation, electronic tongue systems can help predict dangerous drugs and provide information about their existence.
Molecular Imprinted Polymers
Enzymatic biosensors can be extremely sensitive and offer information on a variety of substrates and inhibitors that is both selective and cross-selective. Although they frequently experience slow deactivation. Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIP) were suggested as alternatives to chemical catalysts. MIP sensors are formed into an array to take advantage of their high cross-reactivity and typically low selectivity. A big, varied matrix may be made relatively quickly and inexpensively because different MIP sensors can be created similarly. Even minor environmental changes can easily cause changes in a protein's tertiary or quaternary structure. So, molecular recognition using imprinted cavities is eliminated. Fortunately, the use of a sensor matrix can substantially mitigate this effect.
Brain-Machine Interfaces and Animal Models
The idea of in vivo/ex vivo electronic tongues advances bioinspired strategies. This is because, in this scenario, a matrix with individual taste receptors, gustatory cells, or even the entire animal connects electrodes to the right brain area. The scientific difficulty in the case of the brain-machine interface is to decode the data obtained from the cerebral examination of the signal transmitted from the animal's tongue. The tongue serves as the sensor component, and the relevant brain region serves as the processing unit in this system. This results in signals made up of spikes and local field potentials. This technology already differentiates between the essential flavours of quinine, sucrose, NaCl, and HCl.
Low-Cost Sensor Arrays
Electronic tongue systems frequently give broad information about the sample and identify anomalies. These can be in the shape of damaged food, contaminated water, or alcohol that has been aged with the help of caramel. Due to stringent constraints regarding, for instance, sensors designed for commercial clinical use, the performance of such systems is frequently subpar, or their wider use is challenging. However, even in these situations, electronic tongue systems could be an ideal screening tool. It can indicate the necessity for a more in-depth investigation or point out the issue's origin. Low-cost sensor arrays would have the best chance of becoming commercially successful for this study.
Electronic tongue systems have a wide range of uses. It generates a significant need for further improvement, particularly given the trend toward affordable diagnostics. Recently, a microfluidic electronic tongue that can recognize fundamental flavours was put out. Low-cost sensors can analyze both the micro- and macro-scales. Also, they can be utilized singly or in arrays to create intricate but affordable electronic tongue systems. The number of existing sensors that could combine this way is nearly unlimited. Some can be colourimetric and electrochemical paper-based systems, electrodes made from CDs, or components of integrated circuit chips.
Applications
The primary function of the tongue in humans is to distinguish between various flavours. Because of this, the most frequent uses of its artificial equivalent are for flavour evaluation and identifying substances involved in taste perception. The first electronic tongue was made to distinguish five basic flavours: umami, sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. Since then, sensors can analyze and categorize the flavours of multicomponent mixtures. Thus, turning them into a flexible instrument popular in the pharmaceutical business, environmental monitoring, and food analysis.
Food
Food products are now inspected along the whole food supply chain to ensure their quality and compliance with safety regulations. In the food sector, there are a variety of analytical techniques, but despite their many benefits, they are time-consuming, expensive, and labour-intensive. New screening techniques can help since certain traits are incompatible with the production, transport, and distribution phases of the modern food supply chain and customer validation. The electronic tongue seems the best tool for the job because it allows for quick, accurate, and direct analysis. It can also be used for automatic online monitoring while processing food.
Recognition and Origin Tracing
One of the significant issues facing the food sector is food authentication. All items must adhere to labelling requirements for brand, origin, ingredients, and production method. The geographical origin is the most critical information because it significantly affects the pricing. When it comes to brand and origin recognition, alcohols are among the items that are most frequently examined. With the help of disposable screen-printed electrodes, the portable electronic tongue system can identify between various larger beers and determine their colour and alcohol content. Additionally, it is possible to find stabilizers, antioxidants, colours, and other ingredients. These are generally added throughout the fermentation process.
Wine samples could be categorized based on the grape used in their production. The system's affordability, adaptability, and capacity to handle microliter sample volumes are some of its key advantages. Oils, dairy products, non-alcoholic beverages, different types of honey, teas, and coffees are additional product categories that are widely popular regarding label authenticity. A system using metals (Au, Ag, and Cu) and metallic compounds (Ag2O, AgCl, Ag2CO3, and Cu2O) were created to categorize honey according to its botanical origins.
Evaluation of Food Quality and Freshness
Consumer interest in food product quality is constantly rising. Even though there are laws governing food safety, there are still instances of fraud with a desire for financial gain. A trained sensory panel will often evaluate a wine's fragrance and taste qualities to determine its quality. Another frequently examined component is the determination of the individual phenolic classes and the total phenolic content. This is because phenols significantly contribute to wine's colour, astringency, and bitterness and serve as a preservative throughout the ageing process. The favourable health effects and flavour characteristics of olive oils are also due to phenols.
Freshness assessment is crucial regarding meat and fish items because spoilt or rotten food can harm consumers' health. Gluten detection in various foods is another intriguing application of a taste-sensing technology. Currently, a wide variety of goods on the market are "gluten-free." However, costly and time-consuming methods are mainly used to identify gluten. A microfluidic impedance electronic tongue-based alternative approach for gliadin (one of the proteins that form gluten) measurement can help. The instrument could distinguish between items with trace levels of gluten and those without. A voltammetric electronic tongue can be used to quantify cooked rice's physical and chemical characteristics, such as softness, stickiness, sweetness, and scent. A potentiometric electronic tongue assesses the time that has passed since the meat started to degrade.
Process Monitoring
Electronic tongues can also be used to successfully monitor food composition alterations during production. Continuous fermentation monitoring enables the detection of microbiological contamination, avoidance of undesirable deviations, and process viability. The only systems capable of handling such samples at this time are electronic tongue systems. These samples are highly complex, exhibit wide variations in the background composition, and require careful study. A deficiency in a particular nutrient can sometimes halt the process or result in undesirable byproducts.
An electronic tongue with electrodes modified with metal oxy-hydroxide and MWCNT can make it easier to analyze carbs while optimizing production. Another form of e-tongue based on miniature potentiometric and voltammetric sensors was used to monitor beer fermentation. Aging is a production phase that frequently comes after fermentation and can enhance the quality of alcoholic beverages like wine. We require alternative methods because the price of wooden barrels heavily influences it. The sensor matrix could tell the difference between natural wine and Cabernet Sauvignon wine that had been macerated with four kinds of oak chips. The type of oak chips added to the wine affects the phenolic content. The system can determine this. Monitoring a ham-curing process is an intriguing example of a sensor array's use.
Detection of Adulteration and Contamination
It is not only illegal but also dangerous for the consumer's health if there are unwanted compounds present that are not listed on the label. Therefore, it is crucial to develop quick, accurate, and affordable techniques for identifying contamination in food products. Recently, a genetically modified automated bioelectronic tongue was used to quantify pesticide combinations in milk. In minced beef and saline solution, a voltammetric electrode array can forecast the concentrations of the three most common curing substances—nitrate, nitrite, and chloride. One of the most critical issues facing the food industry is the assessment of contaminants. These are purposefully added in order to lower the cost of production while maintaining the high price of the finished product.
When determining food quality and finding pollutants, pesticides are different substances. In the case of vegetables and fruits certified as ecological, the potential presence of pesticides necessitates further quality checks. Numerous analytical techniques can find these chemicals, including chromatographic and spectroscopic ones. However, they all need specialized tools and sample preparation. In this, electronic tongue systems can effectively monitor herbicides at nanomolar levels.
Water Analysis
Another primary sector in which electronic tongues could supersede traditional analytical procedures is the analysis of water samples. Similar to food monitoring, the attention of the researchers is on creating reliable and low-cost instruments for authenticity and quality assessment. This is mainly for drinking water. Adulterations can occur at any point during transport or storage. So, quality evaluation is necessary throughout the production line and in the packaged finished items. The brand is one of the critical elements in consumers' product choices. Products from particular producers not only have specific flavour and composition characteristics for food but also for water.
Taste Masking of Pharmaceuticals
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API), including caffeine, ibuprofen, diclofenac, and paracetamol, can effectively treat infections and disorders. The human palate can detect a variety of flavours, each of which can naturally detect either pleasure or distaste. Unfortunately, API's taste is typically considered unpleasant because it tends to be bitter. A standard method involves covering pills and capsules with a sugar film or tasteless coating shell. Unfortunately, only liquid versions of medications can frequently be used in pediatric and geriatric treatment due to swallowing issues. Several taste masking strategies, such as sweeteners and artificial flavours, can eliminate or lessen API's bitterness.
Bitterness and taste-mimicking substances can cause hypersensitivity. As a result, their evaluation has become a crucial quality-control factor in creating novel medications. With increased molecular weight and hydrophobicity, peptides become more bitter. It is currently impossible to theoretically forecast the flavour of novel chemical compounds. Initially, panels of willing human participants reported their perceptions regarding flavour. However, the morality of using human test subjects and laboratory animals to determine the flavour of medications in their early stages of research is debatable because it can be fatal in case of allergies.
Electronic tongue for API flavour masking
Due to the great degree of flavour complicity, results from human test panellists also differ between individuals. Age, sex, and the tester's country of origin can all affect how someone perceives a flavour. The electronic tongue was proposed to satisfy the requirement for an artificial instrument for taste judgment that complies with ethical norms. Developing new sensor types that can assess API flavour masking techniques is ongoing. A potentiometric sensor array can distinguish between standard API like ibuprofen and roxithromycin. It was discovered that both chemicals' taste was similarly masked by microencapsulation. The voltammetric systems showed a more pronounced clustering pattern, while the potentiometric arrays showed similarities.
Other applications
The use of electronic tongue systems goes far beyond the evaluation of taste masking techniques and the study of food products. It is a potential tool for many study domains due to its many benefits. This includes speed and affordability of the analysis and simplicity of the system. Also, in many cases, the ability to assemble an electronic tongue from readily available sensors.
Biomedical Research
Electronic tongue systems may be helpful in physical and analytical chemistry, nanotechnology, biology, pharmacokinetics, and computational sciences. However, biomedical research is where they are most commonly present outside of the food business.
Analysis of Biological Fluids
The electronic tongue can be a diagnostic tool to spot and track the early stages of pathological biological processes. These processes contribute to a wide range of diseases. The electronic tongue can help because of its specificity and technical adaptability. No matter the type of biological fluid, it can detect the target chemical. An electronic tongue makes it possible to distinguish between urine samples from healthy and unwell patients with renal failure. The equipment is beneficial for spotting the early stages of the illness. It can help in the clinical monitoring of kidney illnesses and urine tumors. One of the physiological fluids most frequently employed in diagnostic procedures is blood. Sweat monitoring can be another potential use.
An electronic tongue in this situation might be based on the tattoo sensors. During sweat, they can be placed in various body parts for real-time monitoring of ions, glucose, lactic acid, etc. This wearable tattoo sensor may effectively track an athlete's progress or spot metabolic problems. For the early identification of cystic fibrosis, a hereditary illness of the endocrine glands, disposable screen-printed sensors that can assess chloride in sweat can help. The potential integration of smartwatches and electronic tongue devices for sweat analysis is an intriguing direction. Samsung recently unveiled a gadget called the Samsung Gear, which has slots for sensors that are currently just physical but that, in theory, might also include biological ones.
In Vitro and In Vivo Studies
Mass-produced, miniature pH and K+ sensors allowed for diagnosing ischemia in stomach tissue. The use of swallowable capsules as research tools for the digestive system is promising. A device of this kind can do numerous electrochemical experiments and communicate wirelessly. This small electronic tongue, which operates on stomach fluid, may help with the detection of conditions including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. The electronic tongue may be a fascinating option for monitoring the health of cells by detecting particular culture components in vitro investigations due to the limited availability of non-invasive chemical sensors. Sensor arrays offer a variety of analytical and medical uses, from single cells to animal models, due to their adaptability.
However, in order to make meaningful contributions to clinical screening, diagnosis, or therapy, electronic tongues must adhere to a number of strict rules that are specific to medical devices.
Safety
National Safety
Explosive substances are receiving increasing attention lately due to the rise in terrorist acts. It is crucial to develop new analytical approaches to make explosives detection technologies that are more accurate, quicker, and less expensive. In the fields of governmental protection and the investigation of criminal cases, screening various unknown samples in the hunt for various harmful substances is highly common. The bulk of the analytical techniques used today is challenging to use with peroxides. Peroxides are the primary source of explosive material for terrorist attacks. Electronic tongue systems can distinguish between various nitrogen and nitroaromatic chemicals and peroxides. It is also a promising tool for detecting and quantifying any explosive substances. This is because it is simple to miniaturize and employ in on-site experiments.
Environmental Safety
Rapid industrial development creates a large number of poisonous and destructive chemicals. These in the environment cause soil, air, and water pollution. Because some harmful chemical compounds are not biodegradable, they build up in the tissues of plants and animals. The respiratory, cardiovascular, and nervous systems can have impacted by exposure to ozone, carbon monoxide, etc., which can cause asthma, asphyxiation, and various cancers. An intriguing use for electronic nose systems is the early identification of dangerous air and water pollutants in fast-growing cities that can prevent adverse environmental effects like smog development or mitigation.
Another vital component of water regulation is the detection of harmful chemicals, bacteria, and heavy metal ions in freshwater. Both human and animal health may be at risk due to the toxins. It is possible to determine the nanomolar concentrations of these toxins using a variety of biosensors. Wastewater can be evaluated for quality at various stages of purification in a wastewater treatment plant using a miniature bio-electronic tongue.
Conclusion
Electronic tongue systems are of utmost importance because of their unique qualities. This includes the capacity to deal with complicated and shifting environments and lessen the impact of interfering factors. Electronic tongue systems can be customized for various application fields according to various sensing modalities, the potential use of unusual production techniques, and numerous data treatment approaches. Additionally, they are a viable replacement for time-consuming and expensive analytical procedures. This is because they offer precise and quick analysis without needing trained employees. The sensing arrays help address various real-world issues, from food quality analysis to applications like the clinical analysis.
Moreover, it can even help identify explosive compounds in relation to the current issue of terrorist attacks. The customized and cutting-edge technology in innovative tools like intelligent watches or disposable low-cost sensor systems may help this type of system spread even further in the coming years. Thus bringing it closer to the general public.

2023.02.21 17:29 drachiryu Bakery Goods Lead Gluten Free Market Segment, Forecast to be Dominant Through 2030 $GFCOF #BreakingNews @ipoguy

The Good Flour Corp. Poised to Benefit from Increased Demand for Gluten Free Baked Goods
VANCOUVER, BC, Feb. 21, 2023 /CNW/ - The Good Flour Corp. (CSE: GFCO) (OTCQB: GFCOF) (FSE: 3KZ) ("GFCO") with its automated production facility, is poised to meet rising product demand of gluten free products, especially from the food services industry.
"The food service industry recognizes the need to provide gluten free offerings on their menus," pointed out Matthew Clayton, CEO of GFCO. "Providing the food service industry with quality gluten free offerings is one of the largest margin segments of our business. Recent studies have found that gluten sensitivity and Celiac Disease has been on the rise, especially in the USA. This could be a driving factor for the increased demand for gluten free foods. With increased production, staffing and recent financing we are in the perfect position to meet industry demand for our products through 2023. I anticipate 2023 to be a break out year for GFCO."
According to the National Library of Medicine, celiac disease (CD), non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), and wheat allergy (WA) represent a spectrum of immune-mediated reactions to wheat and in some cases specifically gluten, a protein composite of gliadin and glutenin. Once believed to be relatively rare, particularly in the US, it is now thought that gluten-related disorders affect nearly 10% of the population.
Based on market analysis from Grand View Research, the bakery products segment accounted for the largest revenue share of nearly 29.0% in 2021 and is expected to maintain its dominance over the forecast period. Rising awareness regarding a healthy diet including natural, organic, and gluten-free foods is expected to drive the segment growth.

Previously
Tuli didn’t know how it had come to this as he pressed his head against the sliding door and whined, “Please, I want to help.”
“For fuck’s sake Tuli, no. You never treat yourself, and you always put so much work into meals whenever you’re cooking for someone else. I want to make something nice for you. Please… just let me have this. Why not go prep the fire? They forecasted snow for tonight.”
He grinned and chuckled a little, “Banished from my own kitchen… how did it come to thi-?” The door suddenly opened up and a blast of warm humid air washed over his face and he fell forward into Trath’yra’s arms.
“It’s your birthday,” she ran a hand through his hair. “Please… just relax for one time this year. That’s all I want.”
“Fine, but I’m going to make you pay for this.” He leaned against her as she giggled at that prospect.
“Oh I’m sure you’ll make me pay… some-way.” Trath’yra leaned back against him before she broke the embrace and closed the wooden sliding door again. “No peeking though. This is supposed to be a surprise for you.”
“Kaaaaaay.” He listened quietly as the Shil’vati busied herself with preparing whatever the meal was going to be before he crouched in front of the wood stove and studied the wood pile that was carefully stacked into the corner between the stove and far wall. If he’d judged it right there was a week’s worth of wood stacked up in the corner, enough to keep the edge off at night, but if the power went out or if it dipped before freezing for the highs there would be only about a few days inside, and then maybe a week’s worth more under the tarp outside before he’d saw up and split more from the log pile in the backyard.
Tuli collected a well worn knife and tinder box from underneath the stove and began to lay out the foundation of the fire. It was a simple, well practiced task, that allowed his mind to wander as he carved off paper thin slices of cedar. Truthfully, he had already snooped a little at what Trath’yra had tried to sneak into the fridge and found that the ingredients had definitely been imported from offworld. Some kind of mollusk like creature in a conical shell, a violet potato-like plant that had long dark red hollow shoots growing out of it that had tasted vaguely like green onion when he’d chewed on one of the sprigs, and a large vegetable? of some kind that had a surface that looked vaguely like an emu egg and was somewhere between that and an Ostrich egg in size. It had smelled faintly of salt and vinegar when he’d sniffed at it. Tuli mulled on the question of what could actually be made using the ingredients Trath’yra had bought, but without really knowing how any of the food was actually cooked it was guesswork at best.
He shrugged and pushed the thoughts out of mind to study the bed of wood shavings, and selected a piece of pine and began picking out pieces of crystalized pitch and flicking them into the wood shavings. Satisfied that there was now enough tinder to start, Tuli returned the pine back to the tinderbox and began assembling sticks and twigs around the shaving pile. It didn’t take long before he had a delicate tower of thin spindly wood assembled in the middle of the stove, which he began building around with larger finger sized pieces of wood, that he split off from some of the smaller logs with just the knife, and occasional persuasion from another stick of wood. With the “core” of the fire now built he flanked the cabin like structure with a split log of cedar.
Tuli set the knife aside and retrieved the tinder box again in order to fish out a match, lit it and fished it into the wooden structure within the stove. After a moment’s contact with the flame the thin wood shavings caught and rapidly carried the flame up the spindly ladder within and threw a surprising amount of heat as it quickly spread to the larger sticks in the exterior tower. As the fire consumed the thinner wood, Tuli slowly fed it extra pieces and sticks in order to build up the coals and carry the fire to the larger cedar and juniper logs.
With the fire well and truly burning he returned the knife back to its sheath in the tinder box, added a few more small logs to the fire and closed the steel mesh panel door and moved to flop down onto the couch across from the stove. It was a massive, Shil’vati scaled thing, made of some sort of synthetic filling and cut resistant outer fabric that he couldn’t pronounce to save his life even if he tried. It was large enough that he and Trath’yra would have plenty of room to be curled up together on, no matter their positioning or the timing of the moon, which was a definite plus. Tuli smiled sadly, it wasn’t as soft or intimate as the old leather couch he’d had, but the supporting springs and wooden framing had finally given out and when he’d done the math on getting all the parts needed it was just cheaper to get something new.
He laid there quietly, running over the events of the day as he checked a pocket and confirmed the necklace he had for Trath’yra was still there as he mentally ran through what he wanted to say to her. ‘Trath.. You are one of the best things that has ever happened in my life, and while I don’t deserve to be by your side I-’ Someone ran a hand through his hair, pulling him back into reality.
“Looks comfy. Mind if I join you?”
Tuli blinked as his train of thought derailed from Trath’yra having stole up on him, though in actuality, it was more probable he had been entirely focused on his mental recitation and hadn’t noticed when she’d walked up. “Go for it.” He waited as Trathy’ra carefully clambered past him and took her place on the couch between him and the plush back before rolling to face her and nestled his face into the crook of her neck. After a little bit more adjusting positioning he felt her wrap her arms around him and squeezed tight.
“This is nice,” she sighed contentedly.
“Yeah, it is.”
They laid there quietly, the only sounds permeating their breathing was the crackle from the burning wood every now and then.
“Trath.”
“Hmmm?”
“I...” he trailed off, not sure where he wanted to go with his question. He sighed and rubbed his forehead against her shoulder. “Nevermind, just being dumb.”
“Hmmm, is it about what you were talking with the Colonel about?”
He laid there for a few moments before nodding, “Kinda, yeah it’s related.”
“I wish that you’d gone to me first about that.” Her grip tightened around him just slightly to pull him closer. “Tuli, I don’t want you to join the marines. It’s not that I don’t think you can’t make it through basic. I just... I know you don’t like killing, and being in the marines…” She trailed off and let the implication of what a marine’s expected duties were hang in the air.
“Trath, that’s not… No. I wasn’t going to sign up. The Colonel talked me out of that, told me you were putting in for a permanent assignment here. That’s not going to hurt your career right?”
“No, it shouldn’t. I did a dumb when I signed up, didn’t have any prospects then and signed on for multiple tours, but no. I’m not in for life. I promise.” She gave him a reassuring squeeze, “and once my paperwork’s official, and I’m here permanently I can start my vocational training.”
“That’s good. No, that’s great.” He leaned into her embrace and eventually snaked his arms around her, though he didn’t have a long enough reach to completely encircle her.
All too soon a long chime from the kitchen timer signaled for them to disentangle themselves from each other so Trath’yra could go complete the meal she was making.
Tuli laid there alone again staring at the flames in the wood stove. ‘Coward. You should have asked her.’ He let out a long sigh and rolled onto his back to stare at the light and shadows cast from the wood stove flick about in an almost mocking fashion as he listened as Trath’yra worked in the kitchen to finish the meal.
There was a click as the house suddenly went still and the electric hum of the lights, refrigerator and kitchen exhaust spun down abruptly.
“Uhhhh… Did I trip the breaker?”
Tuli sat up on the couch and glanced out one of the windows that faced the rest of town. In the distance under the dim twilight he could faintly see a flashlight beam flicking about and igniting starbursts of reflected light in falling snow as someone else took stock of the situation further down the mountainside. Living atop the mesa in the forest service compound certainly had its advantages, despite the distance to and from town itself. “Mmmmm, no. Looks like power’s out in town too. Probably a tree, or maybe an avalanche?”
“Well, shit.” Trath’yra’s voice was faint and undercut with an anxious twinge, as though she was talking to herself.
“What’s wrong?”
“I-” She paused. “Well, I made a lot more than I thought I would.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“It’s hot. We can’t just put hot food in the fridge during an outage, it might spoil everything else.”
Tuli tilted his head at that, there were two obvious solutions to that considering it was the dead of winter and a snowstorm had in fact arrived.
“I guess. Wait, no. The freezer’s full of stuff too. T'ynjed!”
He involuntarily grinned as he’d never necessarily heard that phrase in Vatikre before, for that matter he’d only rarely heard Trath’yra actually curse, but her intonation definitely made it seem similar in meaning to ‘Dammit’ or maybe ‘fuck’. As cute as it was he could hear her sniffling as well, as though she were already spiraling into thinking the night was ruined already. “Trath, we can just eat it all… right?”
“We can?”
“Yeah, and even if it is too much we can just put it in a ziplock and stick it outside to freeze. It’s winter.”
“Uhhhhh, huh. Ok that sounds too easy, won’t something steal it?”
“Trath, we’re werewolves, the only things that might steal food from us are ferals, or maybe Ashe now that I think about it.”
She giggled a little at the thought, as though having momentarily forgotten about lycanthropy. “Or Spider.”
“It’s snowing, and the power’s out. She’s probably buried under all of the blankets by now.”
“Mmmm.” She mused at the mental image of the 5’ someodd marine going full goblin mode and burrowed into an absurd number of blankets. “Yeah you’re probably right. Can’t help but think something might try and eat it though.”
“How much food did you actually make?” He asked as he slipped off the couch and quietly made his way to the hall closet. At the bottom of the closet he blindly dug through a footlocker filled with miscellaneous emergency supplies.
“Uhhhhh.” She tilted her head and began doing finger math. “About, three… and a half Shil’vati sized portions. So, if we go halvsies?”
“That’s a lot, but I think I can go for that much. It smells good. Ah there it is.” There was a click and the LEDs of the emergency lantern he’d been rooting for began to cast out a warm-white glow around him and lit up the hall closet with a starburst of reflected lights off the bottles and jars of homebrew that was all in differing states of fermentation and aging.
‘Hmmmm, yeah that one.’
Carefully, he balanced the lantern and a bottle that had a deep red and orange appearance to the liquid within, like someone had bottled the sunrise, despite the motes of blue herbs suspended within and carried them both to the dining table just as Trath’yra had finished setting out the spread of food.
“Huh. I thought you were saving that one for a special occasion?”
He set the lantern down in the center between the two basketball sized loaves of bread that had been apparently hollowed out and filled with a creamy looking soup before cracking the seal on the bottle. “Well…it is my birthday, and I can’t think of a more special occasion than spending a romantic dinner with my girlfriend.”
“Ah,” she trailed off, seemingly caught off guard by how forward Tuli was being, and while the light was dim it was clear she was blushing. “Right! Glasses.” She suddenly scurried back into the kitchen with surprisingly giddy speed before quickly returning with two mason jars.
Tuli motioned for her to take a seat, as he poured out half of the bottle for her, and then himself before he took his own spot on the opposite side of the table. He sniffed at the thick and creamy looking soup. It had a heavy savory scent to it, like cream, potatoes and onions with a faint air of almonds. Despite the apprehension he had originally had at some of the offworld ingredients, especially from how the large vegetable had smelled, the finished product was definitely not what he had expected. “So, what is it called?”
“My dad called it “lruf’tyr”... I think. I don’t know if it has a clear one to one translation, I… think? I hope that’s the name.” She trailed off as thought lost in thought.
He took an experimental spoonful and sipped it while glancing down into the soup filled bread bowl. Within the thick creamy liquid he fished up a nugget of some kind of alien meat, that was surprisingly tender. It had a slight acidic taste to it, as though it had been brined and soaked in rice vinegar. He slowly chewed on the nugget of the offworld protein as the thick sauce that surrounded it made its presence known. It was creamy, almost like melted swiss or aged mozzarella with a hint of onions, salt, pepper and sprigs of the occasional crisp sensation of the purple leafed onion plant from the tubers. And then, there was a small pearl-like object that he didn’t recognize that had the consistency of a tapioca sphere, that flooded his mouth with more of the rich melted cheese flavor when he bit into it. He swallowed and tilted his head some, trying to categorize everything he’d tasted before asking, “It’s really good, but is boba tea part of this?”
Trath’yra breathed a sigh of relief before suddenly snorting with laughter. “Boba? What? No. First off you know what that is? Anyway, that’s the kompi seeds.” She swirled her spoon around in her own bread bowl before fishing a surprisingly delicate looking gray sphere about the size of a small marble. “Raw they’re small and hard and get stuck in your teeth, and the fruit itself tastes bitter and salty, but you cook the whole thing down after skinning it and it all mostly just dissolves. But, if you cook it at just the right temperature the seeds get soft and swell up like this.” She popped the gray looking pearl into her mouth and bit into it before returning her attention to her own bowl. “I’m glad you like it.”
He nodded and started to hungrily dig into the soup and mumbled, “Thankyou.”
“For?”
“Treating me to this, you’re right. I don’t really indulge in things,” he sighed slowly. “I’ll, try to be a bit more selfish. Ok?”
She smiled and started into her own bread-bowl as well, slowly sipping at the orange concoction that had been poured to pair with the meal. Her eyes went wide as the sweet and fruity drink hit her tongue. While it was a mead, it had a strong fruity flavor to it and Tuli smiled as she greedily drank it down with her meal. With the bowls being made of sourdough bread, dinner came to a tasty and easily cleaned end. As Trath’yra handled the few dishes there were, Tuli went back to their bedroom to grab the blanket of their bed and, after spreading it out on the couch stacked the wood stove with fresh logs, and shuttered the vents to only draw just enough air before he returned to the couch in time to be joined by Trath’yra. She almost immediately slid her shirt off and tossed it in the general direction of the dining table before she pulled him down onto the couch to wrap the blanket around them both.
He laid there happily in the comfort of her embrace for a spell before he pulled his own shirt off, tossed it and then rolled to face her. Tuli had been about to dart in to steal a kiss when he’d glanced down across Trath’yra as the firelight danced through the gaps in the blanket draped over his shoulders as he half straddled her thigh. It was like she had been coated in stardust as the gray freckles that dotted her violet skin caught and glinted in the firelight, and accented the gentle curves of her breasts and toned muscles. He met her gaze, and her cheshire grin as she felt him grow hard against her.
He wasn’t necessarily staring, but he was enraptured by her gaze as the reflected firelight danced mischievously in her eyes and gave them a more ruby-like hue than their normally fiery-golden appearance. ‘She said be selfish! Say it! Ask her!’
“Is, there something on your mind?”
Tuli had envisioned several scenarios of how he would actually, finally ask her, but during a power outage after eating an alien meal with an almost painful hardon hadn’t exactly been his plan, and the words he’d rehearsed many times had fled his mind as he momentarily froze.
He took a deep breath, and just let the first thoughts he could pull together free. “Trath’yra, you are the greatest good that has ever come into my life in a long while. There are things that I should have done differently and we’ve had our storms…” He fished into the pocket and pulled a sink wrapped object free and held it out between them. “But I would be honored if you’d stay by my side and walk whatever path life ends up taking us down.”
Confusion followed by dawning recognition at what had just been, said, asked and offered to her slowly flitted across her face, before Trath’yra settled into an entirely unreadable expression as she carefully, and gently took the silk scarf from his hand to examine the contents. She slowly unwrapped it and carefully held up the dark, smoky amethyst crystal that had been carefully carved into a stylized claw, with a silvery looking metal used to form the bail, and stabilize some of the cracks and chips that had been made during the lapidary work. It rode along a simple double set of red, waxed and treated cotton chords that ended in adjustable knots. She silently slipped the loop over her head and let the amethyst claw settle between her breasts before mischievously smiling and pulling him down into a tight embrace to whisper her response into his ear. “Yes.”
‘I think I’m going to be really, really selfish tonight.’ He thought with a grin as he leaned into the hug and gently nipped at her ear. It was definitely going to be a long, fruitful night as he felt her shimmying and sliding her jeans off with one hand and undoing the clasp to his own to start doing the same to him.
Tuli’s head, well it didn’t ache, but it definitely felt fuzzy as he stirred and stretched. Every muscle had that vaguely threatening feeling, that if he pushed or pulled one just a little too much he would collapse into an agony of cramping. Slowly he became aware of the furnace that was the naked form of Trath’yra curled up protectively between him and the rest of the world. He sighed, content to lay there a while longer as he dug his heels into the couch beneath them and slid through the tangled web that was a blanket and their respective limbs until fitting into a more comfortable position.
“Mmmfff,” Trath’yra let out a slow sigh of a groan as she moved closer and buried her face into his hair and gently kissed him on the forehead. “Was… well wasn’t really. No. Start over. Brain fuzzy.” She groaned and rolled over, in a slow, deliberate motion with her arms holding him in place so he was now laying atop her as he felt her tense up to try and stave off cramps as well. “Mistake- ahahahmmmmfff. Everything tingly.”
“You, alright love?”
“No, but yes, I don’t think I’m gonna,” she trailed off to let her brain catch up with the words. “Formation, make it to… too sore… maybe?”
Tuli slowly opened up a single eye and glanced around to take in the now dim living room. While there were some coals left in the wood stove glowing, the majority of the light was coming from behind the couch. He slowly craned his head up to rest his chin atop the back of the couch to peer out into the slowly brightening morning sky. After a few moments he realized that the sea of white outside the window wasn’t an optical illusion of reflected clouds, but at least three feet of snow blanketing the yard and rural new mexico countryside. With a slow yawn he laid back down and rubbed his forehead against Trath’yra’s. “Wouldn’t worry about that. About three feet of snow out there.”
She sighed and leaned into the forehead contact. “Small miracles. Too exhausted to even try to bring out the wolf. What even was with you? Some kind of allergy?”
He shrugged, broke the contact and leaned back, watching as the gentle glow of the embers in the wood stove caught in the silver strands in her hair and sparked off the crystal pendant he’d offered her the night before that was now hanging off her neck. “Maybe something in the meal was like, I dunno? Mint, but for humans? Everything in it was from offworld right?”
“Maybe, I just know that. Nnnn.” She winced as one of her shoulder muscles visibly twinged trying to contract on its own. After a few moments the cramp abated and she leaned into his resumed embrace. “Jus’ know, if you were Shil’vati, we’d be needing to think of more than just wedding stuff, well… if I didn’t have the BCI anyway.”
“Uhhh?”
She tilted her head and opened her eyes slightly to stare at him, the irises of her fiery golden eyes narrowed into slits, being the only part of the lycanthropic transformation she could even manage right now. “Goddess… you can be so dense at times. Children Tuli. You…we…did it.” She trailed off and snickered a little, “Honestly lost count… Just a lot.”
He resisted the urge to facepalm at the obvious meaning she’d been implying as she pulled him back into a hug.
“And, another thing, I have two terms, I take your name-”
“But-”
“No. No buts. My ‘family’ name is an orphanage name, it was assigned to me and the academics can’t even agree if she’s a goddess or not, I don’t care that I’m supposed to make you take mine by Shil’ and pack customs and I can’t even remember my actual family name. I want yours.” She squeezed firmly to emphasize her point. “And, I need to meet your mom before we get married. We’ve done a lot, most of it out of order… but I at least need to meet her and be judged before we actually do that.”
Tuli laid there quietly as he mulled over the request before he finally broke the growing silence. “That. Is an ask. I can’t barely even leave the state for groceries without problems-”
“Tuli, please.”
“I didn’t say no, we’re just… We need to fix whatever issue it is with me getting an ID first, and then we can worry about how to go to Finland after that.”
