2023.06.11 00:07 AtoZbodyfitness Debunking the Hype: Why Detox Diets May Not Actually Detoxify Your Body

Introduction
Detox diets have gained significant popularity in recent years as people seek ways to improve their health and well-being. These diets promise to cleanse the body of toxins, promote weight loss, and provide a quick fix for unhealthy lifestyle habits. However, it is essential to critically examine these claims and separate fact from fiction. In this article, we will explore the truth behind detox diets, debunk common myths, and discuss the importance of natural body cleanse through healthy eating. Let's delve into the world of detoxification and discover what science has to say about it.
Debunking detox diets that don't work
Detox diets are often surrounded by a range of myths that can mislead individuals seeking to improve their health. Let's debunk some of the most common misconceptions associated with detox diets:
Myth 1: Detox diets remove toxins from the body
One prevailing myth is that detox diets effectively remove toxins from the body. However, the truth is that our organs, such as the liver and kidneys, are responsible for eliminating toxins naturally. Detox diets may not significantly enhance this process.
Myth 2: Detox diets lead to significant weight loss
Another popular belief is that detox diets can lead to rapid and substantial weight loss. While it’s true that individuals may experience weight loss during detox diets, it is often due to water loss and calorie restriction rather than the elimination of toxins. Once normal eating resumes, weight tends to return.
Myth 3: Detox diets are a quick fix for unhealthy lifestyle habits
Detox diets are sometimes perceived as a quick fix for poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. However, true health and well-being are achieved through sustainable lifestyle changes, including balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and stress management. Relying solely on detox diets may not address the root causes of unhealthy habits.
It is crucial to approach detox diets with a critical mindset and seek evidence-based information. Expert opinions and scientific studies often refute these detox diet myths, emphasizing the importance of long-term, holistic approaches to well-being.
Remember, when evaluating detox diets, it is essential to consider reliable sources, consult healthcare professionals, and prioritize sustainable lifestyle changes for overall health benefits.
Unveiling the truth about body detoxification
Explanation of the body's natural detoxification process
To understand the limitations of detox diets, it's crucial to comprehend how the body naturally detoxifies itself. Several organs and systems play a vital role in this process:
Role of the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system
The liver is the primary organ responsible for filtering toxins and metabolic waste from the bloodstream. It converts harmful substances into less toxic compounds, which are then eliminated from the body. The kidneys filter waste products and excess fluids, while the lymphatic system helps remove toxins and waste from the body’s tissues.
How the body eliminates toxins naturally
The body eliminates toxins through various processes, including urine, feces, sweat, and exhalation. These natural elimination pathways work in harmony to maintain the body's overall balance and health.
Highlighting the limitations of detox diets in comparison to natural detoxification
Detox diets often claim to enhance the body's natural detoxification process. However, it is important to recognize that the human body is already equipped with highly efficient detoxification mechanisms. While detox diets may provide short-term benefits, they may have limitations when compared to the body's innate detoxification abilities.
Detox diets often involve extreme calorie restriction, specific food choices, or the use of supplements and herbal remedies. These approaches can be restrictive and may not provide the necessary nutrients for the body's optimal functioning. Moreover, detox diets are typically short-term solutions and may not address the underlying factors contributing to toxin accumulation.
Emphasizing the importance of supporting the body's natural detoxification process through healthy habits
Rather than relying solely on detox diets, it is crucial to support the body's natural detoxification process through healthy habits. Here are a few key practices:
Balanced nutrition: Consume a varied diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. These nutrient-dense foods provide the necessary vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that support the body's detoxification pathways.
Hydration: Drink an adequate amount of water daily to support kidney function and help flush out toxins.
Regular exercise: Engage in physical activity regularly to stimulate circulation, promote sweating, and support the lymphatic system's detoxification process.
Stress management: Chronic stress can affect the body's natural detoxification mechanisms. Implement stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, yoga, or engaging in hobbies to support overall well-being.
By adopting these healthy habits, individuals can enhance the body's natural detoxification process and maintain long-term well-being. Remember, it's important to prioritize sustainable lifestyle changes rather than relying solely on short-term detox diets.
Simple and effective ways to detoxify your body naturally
Encouraging healthy lifestyle habits for natural body cleansing
When it comes to detoxifying your body naturally, adopting healthy lifestyle habits is key. Here are some simple yet effective practices to support your body's natural detoxification process:
Adequate hydration and the benefits of water
Staying hydrated is essential for optimal detoxification. Water helps flush out toxins through urine and sweat. Aim to drink an adequate amount of water daily, approximately 8 cups (64 ounces), or more depending on your activity level and climate.
Consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
A well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet is crucial for supporting your body's natural detoxification process. Include plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meals. These foods are rich in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, which help promote detoxification and overall health.
Regular physical activity and its impact on detoxification
Engaging in regular exercise has numerous benefits, including supporting the body’s detoxification process. Physical activity increases blood circulation, promotes sweating, and enhances the lymphatic system’s function, which aids in toxin elimination. Find activities you enjoy, such as walking, jogging, swimming, or yoga, and aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week.
Sufficient sleep and stress management for overall well-being
Adequate sleep and effective stress management are crucial for maintaining overall well-being and supporting natural detoxification. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to allow your body to repair and rejuvenate. Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in activities you find relaxing and enjoyable.
Keywords: body cleanse, healthy eating vs. detox
By prioritizing these healthy habits, you can naturally support your body's detoxification process. Remember, a balanced and nourishing diet, regular physical activity, sufficient sleep, and effective stress management are key components of a holistic approach to overall well-being and a natural body cleanse. Rather than relying on short-term detox diets, focus on long-term healthy eating and lifestyle habits for sustained health benefits.
Demystifying the hype around detox diets
Detox diets have gained significant attention in the wellness industry, often accompanied by marketing tactics and enticing promises. However, it is crucial to demystify the hype surrounding detox diets and approach them with a critical mindset. Let's explore the marketing tactics, potential risks, and drawbacks associated with detox diets:
Discussing the marketing tactics and promises associated with detox diets
Detox diets are often marketed as quick fixes for various health concerns, including weight loss, increased energy, and improved overall well-being. Eye-catching advertisements, celebrity endorsements, and before-and-after success stories contribute to their allure. However, it's important to remember that marketing tactics can sometimes exaggerate the benefits and oversimplify the complexities of the human body.
Analyzing the potential risks and drawbacks of detox diets
While detox diets may offer short-term benefits, they can also pose potential risks and drawbacks. Some common concerns include:
Nutrient deficiencies: Detox diets often involve severe calorie restriction and limited food choices, which can lead to inadequate intake of essential nutrients. Prolonged or repetitive detox diets may result in nutrient deficiencies, compromising overall health.
Unbalanced approach: Detox diets may focus on specific foods, juices, or supplements while neglecting the importance of a balanced diet. This unbalanced approach may not provide all the necessary nutrients required for long-term health and well-being.
Unsustainability: Many detox diets are designed for short-term use, which can lead to a cycle of temporary results followed by a return to previous habits. Sustainable, long-term lifestyle changes are often more effective for achieving lasting health benefits.
Potential side effects: Rapid weight loss, headaches, fatigue, irritability, and gastrointestinal disturbances are some potential side effects associated with certain detox diets. It's important to be aware of these risks and consider individual health conditions before embarking on any drastic dietary changes.
Encouraging individuals to make informed decisions based on scientific evidence
To make informed decisions about detox diets, it is essential to seek reliable information and scientific evidence. Consultation with healthcare professionals, such as registered dietitians, can provide personalized guidance based on your specific needs and health conditions. They can help you navigate through the overwhelming amount of information and separate fact from fiction.
Remember, sustainable lifestyle changes that include a balanced diet, regular physical activity, and stress management are key for long-term health and well-being. Instead of relying solely on detox diets, focus on evidence-based approaches that support overall health and consider the unique needs of your body. Making informed decisions based on scientific evidence is the key to promoting your well-being.
Exploring the science behind body detoxification
Brief overview of scientific studies on detoxification
Scientific studies have provided valuable insights into the body's natural detoxification process. Researchers have extensively studied organs like the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system to understand how toxins are processed and eliminated. While studies vary in their specific focus, they collectively contribute to our understanding of detoxification mechanisms.
Discussing the importance of evidence-based approaches
When it comes to assessing the effectiveness of detox diets, it is crucial to rely on evidence-based approaches. Scientific studies provide valuable insights into the efficacy and potential limitations of detox diets. Some studies have found that detox diets may lead to short-term weight loss, but much of this weight loss is often due to water and muscle loss rather than a reduction in body fat or toxin elimination.
Moreover, there is limited scientific evidence to support the claims that detox diets effectively remove toxins or provide long-term health benefits. It is essential to critically evaluate the quality and reliability of research studies and consider the consensus among experts in the field.
Keywords: debunking detox myths, do detox diets work
Debunking common detox myths and exploring the question of whether detox diets actually work requires a nuanced understanding of scientific evidence. While detox diets may provide short-term benefits, it is important to approach their claims with skepticism and rely on well-designed, peer-reviewed studies for guidance.
Evidence-based approaches emphasize the significance of long-term lifestyle changes that promote overall health and well-being. This includes consuming a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress levels, and getting sufficient sleep. These evidence-based practices are more likely to support the body's natural detoxification process and contribute to lasting health benefits.
By understanding the science behind body detoxification and critically evaluating the available evidence, individuals can make informed decisions regarding detox diets and prioritize sustainable approaches for their overall well-being.

2023.06.10 23:52 Bgibby96 Oven Fire

Not sure if this is the place for this but basically long story short, girlfriend was cooking and a fire started in the oven cause of parchment paper catching. I know the general oven safety rules, leave door close… no water… but my girlfriend opened the door and threw a third of a pitcher of water into the oven. Fire is out but just curious if there is some general safety precautions before booting up the oven again. She didn’t throw a ton of water in the oven but I do know there’s some electrical components so just trying to figure out where to go from here….

FYI, this is a story COLLECTION. Lots of standalones technically. So, you can basically start to read at any chapter, no pre-read of the other chapters needed technically (other than maybe getting better descriptions of characters than: Adam Vir=human, Krill=antlike alien, Sunny=tall alien, Conn=telepathic alien). The numbers are (mostly) only for organization of posts and continuity.

He was so hungry, lying on the floor of the cage, his hand dangling through the bars, he listened as his stomach left off a round of mournful gurgling.
The mournful gurgle turned into a low grumble and then a distinctive angry howl. His mouth was dry, and he did his best to wet his lips with his tongue.
He could only imagine what the others had been feeling when he first arrived.
No one had been feeding them, and here he was, lying around in a pathetic heap, though he was still watered and fed to some degree. Arguably the amount should have been sustainable if he hadn't been sharing with the other prisoners. He knew it would only cause more problems for all of them in the long run, but he couldn't bring himself to eat while others starved.
Below them on the Prodigum's open floor, Sunny lay curled up against one wall with a line of other prisoners. He had no doubt that she could have broken out by now, but she wouldn't, not as long as he was here at least.
Adam rolled onto his back to stare up at the ceiling of the cage. A plan had been forming in his head, though whether he could get a message to Sunny was a different matter. He mostly hoped that she would be smart enough to go along with it, or smart enough to go along with it and help with her own plan, if his plan failed.
What was his plan?
Well, that was an entirely different matter…
Honestly it was a pretty stupid plan, designed based on complete conjecture and hope on his part.
Not only that but it pretty much required that Sunny had the ability to read minds, which in itself was stupid, considering their only mind reader was most likely a couple million light years away.
He sighed.
"Ready to start again, commander?”
He closed his eyes against the voice and tried not to groan. He did not want to keep going with this, but he knew he had to.
He rolled onto his knees and looked over at the other cages, where the voice coach and the drummer were watching him. The two of them had been there longer than him and were much closer to the verge of death, though since his arrival they were at least getting something small to eat and drink.
"I'm ready."
His voice was hoarse, and He was forced to clear it.
At least his throat didn't hurt today, a fact that he owed all to the voice coach.
"Remember keep your posture straight, but not strained, breath all the way down and into the belly, don't rely on the chest. The posture of the mouth is the most important aspect of a good singing voice."
He leaned his head against the bars with a sigh.
This was not something he ever thought he would need to learn how to do, especially not in order to save his own life.
There were plenty of other things he had imagined needing to learn. On the floor below them, he watched as Sunny watched him, her sharp gold eyes curious as she watched the two of them working.
She would have no idea what his plan was, and he couldn't tell her. It was known that there were members of the serving staff who were loyal to the Prodigum, whether it be out of fear, Stockholm syndrome, or loyalty.
He idly wondered what the others were thinking.
He wondered what Sunny was thinking.
He wondered if tonight would be his last night alive.
If he would die he would make at least sure that it would be to save Sunny.
[…]
The clients began filtering into the room.
Slaves were brought forward for auction, most of them rather worthless, burned out from ears and years of use, but occasionally he would throw in a piece from his own stock knowing that the perceived value of one slave would drive up the price of another.
Lights began to flash and pulse around them at his behest.
He liked the flashing lights, they tended to confuse some of the other species, making them dumber and more likely to buy irrational purchases.
It was the same with the music, though speaking of which… where was his music?
In anger, he turned in his place, shuffling his great bulk over the floor with great halting movements of his arms and the shuffling of his back legs.
The little tentacles below his chin waved in the air, tasting it. He could taste the human, so it's not like the creature was out of his sight.
Ah there it was, in its cage as usual.
It was standing defiantly looking down at him. The ugly little creature glowered at him, its tight skin stretched over bone and lumpy muscle skeletal and strange with its flexible rubbery body.
He hated humans, though they were at least good for one thing.

Singing.
He wasn't entirely sure how they did, but he was more than jealous.
He really wished Prodigum could sing…
Though he was already working in one of the backrooms on a little project to help with that hinderance…
Of course, he didn't know this, but the Prodigum were more readily affected by human species than a lot of the others.
Where it targeted the Vrul's sense of pattern recognition and overloaded their brain, it directly impacted the emotional cortex of the Prodigum.
Singing to him was an addiction.
One that he had not yet admitted to himself or anyone else.
The human still stared at him its slimy white and green eye, blinking once or twice. He shivered in disgust, but slowly turned to look at the blue Drev. She would fetch a nice price if he were ever to sell her, and he hoped the human understood his intentions.
They were at least smart enough for that on most occasions.
He saw the human shoulders sink just a bit.
Then without further urging, it began to sing.
The Prodigum leaned back slightly, as the sound washed over him bringing with it a wave of melancholy and sadness.
It felt so good,
The fold of his face trembled with delight.
All around him the other clients stopped to look up at the human.
Was it just them or had its voice gotten better, more hypnotic?
[…]
Behind the Prodigums back Sunny flexed her hands.
She was ready for whatever Adam was planning, for she knew based on the looks and small gestures he had been giving her over the past few days that he was planning something.
However, the night went on, and although Adam's singing voice had markedly improved, she sensed nothing changing.
She shifted nervously in her cage, looking over to where the Prodigum sat on his back haunches, his large arms resting beside him, a glassy expression on his face, or at least as glassy as an expression could get when it looked like a pile of melted dough.

That was strange…
She glanced around at the others, aliens in various stages of debauchery, sort of lethargic and wobbly.
She glanced up at Adam…
He looked down at her, letting the last note of the song he was using fade off.
She nervously shifted as the aliens began to shift and move.
Then the quiet human in the far cage began tapping his hand against the bars. Adam cleared his throat. The female human began to hum softly.
How interesting…
The effect was almost immediate.
Adam took one deep breath and made eye contact with Sunny.
And then he opened up his voice, cutting through the fading clamor like a blade made of diamond–rising from the upper chest and throat in a way she didn't think him capable, quivering at the top as the others accompanied him.
His voice was full, but filled with pain as he poured in emotion like a damn, breaking to spill water into a canyon. The drummer beat out a soft rhythm behind him.
As he continued to sing the voice was so sad, so pained, that it almost made Sunny want to cry.
He gripped the bars with white knuckled hands, his face contorting with the words not bothering to mask whatever emotion he had dredged up to make a sound like that.
Beautiful and sad.
He dropped low into his chest his voice ringing powerfully over the walls before dropping into softness.
He leaned his head against the bars.
She had a tough time looking away.
What did someone have to be thinking about to make a sound like that?
The beat stopped behind him, leaving just his clear voice ringing out through the room.
She was forced to shake herself from her reverie.
When that song ended, the next one began his voice –quiet– filling the room as she slowly stepped back out of line of sight from the others.
No one was paying attention to her.
If she could just make it to the door, then maybe she would be able to find a way to get a signal out to the others.
Her movement almost notified someone, but at that moment Adam dropped his voice low, adding such a powerful hint of sadness in it that it nearly broke turning his voice to a soft rasp.
The creature could barely keep its feet.
Off to her side the Prodigum had practically melted onto the floor.
She had almost reached the door, and he brought his voice higher, the rasp still in it. It took everything she had to keep moving towards the door, and not to turn around, to be captured in the pain and sadness that he used to glue the others to their places.
Again, she couldn't help but wonder what kind of memories you had to dredge up to sing like that.
It was almost painful.
She had made it to the door.
She reached out to open it as the door opened and light spilled inward, he again reached upwards with his voice, cracking the barrier between him and the others. His voice began to splinter, but not unintentionally, actually quite on purpose, fracturing like ice.
She ran out into the hall.
She froze in place for a second, running face-first into another Prodigum.
It looked as if it was about to attack her, but when the voice washed over it, there was nothing it could do but follow the sound.
As the voice filtered out into the hallway, the same effect remained true. Others began following the sound in a dazed trance barely acknowledging her as they searched for the sad voice, so clear and powerful.
[…]
He leaned into it, eyes closed, trying to dredge up the emotion he needed. He needed to give Sunny time to work. He needed to keep their attention. But the more he thought about keeping his voice in place, the harder it was to hold.
So, he tried to ignore the need, instead allowing the emotion to roll into his body strong enough to make his face tingle and shivers to run down his face.
Tears sprung to his eyes, and he tried to hold that feeling allowing his voice to crack at just the right moments occasionally looking down at a slowly growing crowd absolutely entranced.
Behind him, the others were trying hard to keep up.
The door had opened long ago, but there were still forms trickling in.
How long would he have to hold this before someone noticed that Sunny was missing?
He tried tor as long as he could, he really did, but carrying that amount of emotion was difficult, and eventually it faded away. He still kept their rapt attention with his voice, but they were moving again, looking around at each other with confused expressions as if they were trying to figure out what had happened. The Prodigum lay almost passed out on the floor looking on in a strange mixture of confusion and contentment.
Like he was high as hell.
He had no idea how Sunny was going to do this worried that she had gone to her death.
Someone would notice her eventually, wouldn't they?
He wasn't sure how long he was going, hours or not, but eventually he lost the strength of his voice and the surrounding room went back to its normal routine using him as a simple background.
He had done all he could, now it was time to find out if Sunny had made it or not.*
[…]
”If it would be up to me, that bastard would be so fucking dead, like series bullshit, fucking laws! Why can’t we just off this motherfucking motherfucker!?”
The door hissed open, and the Prodigum turned his groggy head towards the light spilling across the floor.
He was surprised at that moment as a small shape scuttled into the room.
”And all this bullshit about I how I should stay logical, I don’t FUCKING care! I’m sick of this bullshit! The marines get to kill people all the time, but if I ask if I could bathe a goddamn Prodigum in acid and they say “nooo you can’t to that its unethical”… Fuck off!”
A Vrul?
But those didn't come here?
Number one they couldn't stand music, and number two, they were never involved in the slave market.
”Fuck off goddamn ethical laws, its not like they uphold them!”
The strange sight pulled him out of his trance enough to get up and scoot in that direction, to find out more about this uninvited guest.
It was a small creature, a brownish grey in color with large orange prismatic eyes.
He wondered how it was still walking, but then noticed the large noise-canceling headphones it wore.
”Really I am so fucking done! Fine have it as you want I will NOT kill him… there are other ways to give him what he deserves…”
It scuttled closer to him, pausing at his feet before looking up.
”Hey asshole!? Yes I am talking to you!”
That was strange, it didn't seem scared?
But the Vrul were always scared!?
"Are you the proprietor of this fine establishment?"
The Prodigum was totally baffled about what was going on and just answered truthfully.
"I am."
"Jolly good."
The creature said, reaching out with a hand and gently tossing something in his direction.
The Prodigum flinched for a moment as the tiny devices stuck to his arms legs and face.
"What is that?"
”What you deserve bitch!”
The little creature raised a hand and pressed something with a click.
His world erupted in pain, as lightning and electricity surged through him.
And then the world turned black.
[…]
Dr. Krill stood over him, hand still, still every now and then pressing the button as humans and Drev erupted into the room from all angles.
”I hate the fact that because of YOU Adam got captured AGAIN!”
He pressed the button again.
**”I hate the fact that because of you I had to captain a FUCKING human ship for two weeks, you hear me!? TWO WEEKS!!!”
Another button press, followed by more painful twitching from the Prodigum.
”But do you want to know what I hate most of all?”
He leaned down to the twitching Prodigum, holding down on the button.
"I…”
”HATE…”
”Fieldwork!"
He looked up from where he stood,
"You are ALL under arrest."
Another Prodigum hissed:
”You can’t just do that!”
”Oh, what I can’t do is surgically cut you a thousand times and then bathe you in salt, because SOMEONE apparently decided the Geneva convention should also apply to scumbags like you. But what I can do is arrest you fuckers! Just watch me!”
”Wait what was that first part?”
"Thank your gods I didn't have final jurisdiction."

Thanks for reading! As you saw in the title, this is a cross posted story written by starrfallknightrise and I'll just upload some of it here for you guys, if you are interested and want to read ahead, the original story-collection can be found on tumblr or wattpad to read for free. (link above this text under "OC:..." ) It is the Empyrean Iris story collection by starfallknightrise. Also, if you want to know more about the story collection i made an intro post about it, so feel free to check that out to see what other great characters to look forward to! (Link also above this text). I have no affiliations to the author; just thought I’d share some of the great stories you might enjoy a lot!
Obviously, I have Charlie’s permission to post this and for the people already knowing the stories, or starting to read them: If you follow the link and check out the story you will see some differences. I made some small (non-artistic) changes, mainly correcting writing mistakes, pronoun correction and some small additional info here and there of things which were not thought of/forgotten or even were added/changed in later stories (like the “USS->UNSC” prefix of Stabby, Chalar=/->Sunny etc). As well as some "biggemajor" changes in descriptions and info’s for the same stringency/continuity reason. That can be explained by the story collection being, well a story collection at the start with many standalone-stories just starring the same people, but later on it gets more to a stringent storyline with backstories and throwbacks. (For example Adam Vir has some HEAVY scars over his body, following his bones, which were not really talked about up till half the collection, where it says it covers his whole body and you find out via backflash that he had them the whole time and how he got them, they just weren't mentioned before. However, I would think a doctor would at least see these scars before that, especially since he gets analyzed, treated and goes shirtless/in T-shirts in some stories). So TLDR: Writing and some descriptions are slightly changed, with full OK from the author, since he himself did not bother to correct these things before.

2023.06.10 23:23 TechSupportTime Why does the water taste so awful here?

It's not even an Arizona thing either, places like Flagstaff have great tasting tap water. For some reason the Phoenix area seems to have uniquely bad tasting tap water. Not even our brita filters seem to get rid of it. I've lived here going on 5 years now so maybe I'm just pampered because the last place I lived the water was amazing. Seems like I still haven't gotten used to taste even after years.

2023.06.10 23:23 LIS1050010 An A-Z of incredible uses for everyday things

Did you know you can kill weeds with vodka? Remove stains on clothes with aspirin? Make jewellery gleam with tomato ketchup? Here are 40 surprising tips to save you time and money

and for ... aluminium cans
To create a simple Chinese lantern, mark two lines around a clean empty can, about 2.5cm from the top and bottom. With a sharp craft knife, make vertical cuts about 1.5cm apart between the lines. Make a cut across the bottom of two adjacent strips to make an opening for a candle. Gently press down on the can to make the strips bend in the middle. Insert a tea-light through the opening, then tuck the cut ends of the opening strips inside the can. Finally attach a hanging loop. You can spray-paint the can before cutting it if you like.

and for ... apples
If you've been heavy-handed with the salt shaker when cooking a soup or stew, simply drop a few apple (or potato) wedges into the pan. After cooking for another 10 minutes or so, remove the wedges, which will have absorbed the excess salt.

and for ... aspirin
Before giving up hope of removing a stubborn perspiration stain from a shirt, try this. Crush two aspirins and mix the powder in 100ml warm water. Soak the stained part of the garment in the solution for two to three hours.

B is for ... bread
You can remove most dirty or greasy fingerprints from painted walls by rubbing the area with a slice of white bread. Bread does a good job of cleaning nonwashable wallpaper as well. First cut off the crusts to minimise the chance of scratching the paper.

and for ... baby oil
Buff up a dull-looking stainless steel sink by rubbing it down with a few drops of baby oil on a soft clean cloth. Rub dry with a towel and repeat if necessary. This is also a terrific way to remove stains on the chrome trim of kitchen appliances and bathroom fixtures.

and for ... bicarbonate of soda
Even the smelliest shoe or trainer is no match for the power of bicarbonate of soda. Liberally sprinkle powder in the offending loafer or laceup and let it sit overnight. Discard the powder in the morning. (Be careful with leather shoes as repeated applications can dry them out.)

C is for ... crayons
Crayons make an excellent filler for small gouges or holes in resilient flooring. Select a colour that closely matches the floor. Melt the crayon in the microwave on medium power over a piece of greaseproof paper, until you have a pliant glob of colour. With a plastic or putty knife, fill the hole. You can use a softened crayon to cover even quite deep scratches on wooden furniture.

and for ... carpet remnants
Place a series of carpet offcuts upside down and cover them with bark mulch or straw for a weed-free garden path. Use smaller scraps as mulch around your vegetable garden.

and for ... coffee grounds
They're full of nutrients that acid-loving plants crave. Save them to fertilise rose bushes, azaleas, rhododendrons, evergreens and camellias. It's better to use grounds from a drip coffeemaker than the boiled grounds from a percolator as the drip grounds are richer in nitrogen.

and for ... compact discs
Use them as garden/driveway reflectors. Drill small holes into a CD and screw it ito a gatepost or stake. Install several of them to mark out a night-time path to your front door.

and for ... correction fluid
Dab small nicks on household appliances with correction fluid. Once it dries, cover your repair with clear nail polish for protection.

D is for ... dental floss
Secure a button permanently with dental floss - it's much stronger than thread. Make hardwearing repairs to outdoor items. Because dental floss is resilient but fine, it is an ideal replacement for thread when you are repairing an umbrella, tent or rucksack.

E is for ... emery board
If a favourite pair of suede shoes have become stained and tired, an emery board can revive them. Rub the stain lightly with the emery board, and then hold the shoe over the steam from a kettle to remove the stain. This technique will work for suede clothing too.

F is for ... fabric softener
End clinging dust on the TV. To eliminate the static that attracts dust, dampen a duster with a little fabric softener straight from the bottle.

and for ... freezers
Place candles in the freezer for at least two hours before burning. They will last longer.

G is for ... golfing equipment
If a screw won't grip because its hole has become too large, dip the tip of a golf tee in wood glue and tap the tee into the hole. Cut the tee flush with a craft knife. When the glue dries, you can drill a new pilot hole in the same spot.

H is for ... hairspray
To keep a child's priceless work of art at its very best before you put it on the pinboard or fridge door, preserve it with hairspray to help it last longer. This works especially well on unstable chalk or pastel pictures as it stops them from getting smudged so easily.

I is for ... ice cube trays
Here's what to do with a half-drunk bottle of red or white wine. Freeze the wine into cubes that can be used later in pasta sauces, casseroles or stews.

and for ... ice cubes
If you're putting sealant around the bath, run an ice cube over it to get a nice even bead - it will never stick.

J is for ... jars
If you've taken a break from gardening, help your gloves dry out by pulling each one over the bottom of an empty jar. Stand the jar upside down on a radiator or hot-air vent. Warm air will fill the jar and dry damp clothing in an instant.

K is for ... ketchup
Keeps silver jewellery sparkling. Soak it in a small bowl of ketchup for a few minutes. If it has a tooled or detailed surface, use an old toothbrush to work ketchup into the crevices. To avoid damaging the silver, don't leave the ketchup on longer than necessary. Rinse and dry.

L is for ... lemons
Get rid of tough stains on marble. Cut a lemon in half, dip the exposed flesh in some table salt and rub it vigorously on the stain. You will be amazed how well it works.

and for ... ladders
A straight ladder or front part of a stepladder makes a shallow planter with ready-made sections that look appealing filled with annuals, herbs or salad greens. After a couple of years of contact with soil, a wooden ladder will decompose.

M is for ... milk cartons
Keep drinks cold at a barbecue or party with ice blocks made from empty milk cartons. Rinse them, fill them with water and put them in the freezer. Peel away the container when you're ready to put them in the punch bowl. If you intend to use them as cooler blocks, leave the container in place.

N is for ... nail varnish
Preserve the important information on labels with a coat of clear varnish. Keep a shirt in good shape by putting a drop of clear varnish on the thread in the buttons. It prevents fraying and loss of buttons.

and for ... newspaper
Slow-ripen tomatoes that are still on the vine in autumn. Wrap each one in a couple of sheets of newspaper and then store them in airtight containers inside a dark cabinet or cupboard at room temperature. Check each one every three or four days; they will eventually ripen to perfection.

O is for ... olive oil
Make your own furniture polish. Combine two parts olive oil with one part lemon juice or white vinegar in a clean recycled spray bottle, shake it up and squirt it on. Leave the mixture on for a minute or two, then wipe off with a clean cloth or paper towel. If you're in a hurry, apply olive oil straight from the bottle on to a paper towel. Wipe off any oil that remains with another towel.

and for ... oatmeal
Add luxury to a regular bath. All you need is 200g oatmeal and your favourite scented oil. Grind the oatmeal in a blender, put it in a cheesecloth bag, add a few drops of scent and suspend the bag under the running water as you fill your bathtub.

and for ... oven cleaner
To remove paint or varnish from wooden or metal furniture, try oven cleaner. It costs less than commercial strippers and is easier to apply (if you spray it). After applying, scrub off the old paint with a wire brush. Neutralise the stripped surface with vinegar, then wash it off with water. Allow to dry. Warning: never use oven cleaner on antique or expensive furnishings - it may darken wood or discolour metal.

P is for ... plastic bottles
Create a drip irrigator for plants. Cut a large hole in the bottom of a bottle, then drill two to five tiny (1.5mm) holes in or around the cap. Bury the closed bottles upside down about three-quarters submerged beneath the soil near the plants you need to water, and fill with water through the hole on top. Refill as needed.

R is for ... rubber flip-flops
Slip a rubber flip-flop on to your hand and rub carpets and rugs in the direction of the pile. Any pet hair will form into balls that can then be vacuumed up. This works well on upholstery, too, including car seats.

S is for ... sand
Fill a large bucket with builder's sand and pour in about a litre of clean motor oil. Plunge spades, hoes, rakes and other tools into the sand a few times to clean and lubricate them. To prevent rust, you can leave the tool blades in the sand for storage.

and for ... salt
Watermarks from damp glasses or bottles left on a wooden surface are unattractive. Make them disappear by mixing one teaspoon of salt with a few drops of water to form a paste. Gently rub the paste on to the ring with a soft cloth or sponge until the spot is gone. Restore the lustre with furniture polish.

T is for ... tennis balls
Give yourself a relaxing and therapeutic back massage: fill a long tube-shaped sock with a few tennis balls, tie the end and stretch the massager around your back as you would a towel after a shower.

and for ... tights
To find lost small objects, cut the leg off an old pair of tights, making sure the toe is intact and pull it over the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner hose. Secure with a rubber band. Turn on the vacuum and you will soon find your valuable attached to your homemade filter.

U is for ... umbrellas
Make an instant trellis. Remove the fabric from an old umbrella and insert the handle into the ground to support climbing vines such as clematis. The umbrella's shape, covered with flowers, will look terrific in the garden.

V is for ... vodka
For a quick and easy weedkiller, mix 30ml vodka, a few drops of washing-up liquid and 400ml water in a spray bottle. Apply at midday on a sunny day to weeds growing in direct sunlight because alcohol breaks down the waxy cuticle covering on leaves, leaving them susceptible to dehydration. It won't work in shady spots.

is for ... WD40
For fast relief from a bee or wasp sting, spray WD-40 directly on the bite. It will soothe the pain at once.

Y is for ... yoghurt
Put 200ml plain active-culture yoghurt into a blender, along with a handful of moss and about 200ml water. Blend for about 30 seconds. Use a paintbrush to spread the mixture wherever you want moss to grow - between the cracks of a stone path, on the sides of flowerpots - as long as the spot is cool and shady. Keep misting the moss with water until it is established.

Z is for . . . zips
Ever lost your car keys in the sand at the seaside? Stitch a small zipped pocket to one corner of the underside of your beach towel, just big enough for keys, sunglasses and maybe a few coins.

And if you're feeling really bold ...
Four bizarre problem-solving suggestions
· If you want to post a fragile item to a friend, wrap the item in disposable nappies before sealing the package. You can be sure your gift will arrive in one piece.
· To get chewing gum out of hair, apply some peanut butter to the matted gum and hair and rub the gum until it comes out. Your child's hair may smell like peanut butter until you wash it, but it is a better solution than having to cut the gum out.
· Wash lettuce in a washing machine. If you are expecting lots of people for lunch, place one pillowcase inside another. Fill the inside case with lettuce leaves. Close with string or a rubber band and throw in the washing machine. Now run the rinse and spin cycle.
· Get the comfort of a salon treatment when giving yourself a home pedicure. Just place marshmallows between your toes to separate them before you apply nail polish.

2023.06.10 23:19 heskey30 Anyone had success in pumping greywater?

I have a standard dump valve on my greywater system and that works just fine when I'm going to campsites. But I also have another system for when I'm urban dwelling - I can pump out smaller amounts into a water bag and take it into bathrooms etc to dispose of in the sewer without a dump station. With this system I can boondock indefinitely.
The problem is the pump keeps jamming - my greywater is mostly from washing dishes and food bits can get stuck in the pump even with a mesh filter ahead of the pump. Sometimes I can dislodge the clog and the pump will be back to normal, but a couple times the pump was unsalvageable. Now I'm out of spare pumps. I believe this is the pump but I definitely remember them being way cheaper a couple years ago:
https://www.amazon.com/Amarine-made-Water-Pressure-Diaphragm-Pump/dp/B00WYMC492/ref=sr_1_11?c=ts&keywords=Boat+Water+Pressure+Pumps&qid=1686430620&s=boating-water-sports&sr=1-11&ts_id=3398091
Maybe I need a better pump? Better filter? Go home and rethink my life?

Help!
I need a second opinion. The maintenance guy said the low water pressure/leaky faucet is because of an old gasket from the showerhead filter. I'm not sure if I agree because it looks like the problem stems from the faucet area/fixtures. I'm struggling to understand his answer. Can anyone explain it to me?

2023.06.10 23:02 tobobonobo Air[Trauma]: Inaccurate listing and customer support from hell

I recently had to use AirCover for a monthly rental that was inaccurately described in the following ways:
In addition to the those inaccuracies:
Around 2pm after the first night, and after calling AirBnB about these issues after being unable to accept the hosts' inadequate redress, we heard two 8ish round gun clips being emptied within 100 yards of the house in chilling succession. We don’t know for sure if it was the host but that didn't stop us from becoming deathly afraid and fleeing in a panicked rush - the news is full of awful shootings these days and we didn't want to risk dying.
I spent about 4 hours on the phone with support that evening waiting for AirCover to help us. Suddenly, and after previously confirming we were covered under AirCover, support started stonewalling us and we ate dinner that night in a parking lot. They wouldn't advise us on how we should proceed; whether we should get a hotel for the night or if AirCover cover us somehow. Instead, they just repeated "we'll call you back very soon" and then never did. We waited for hours for them to call back. Finally, after receiving no word from support before nightfall, despite us calling multiple times, we booked ourselves into a hotel at around 9pm.
About a week later, and after days of persistent attempts to get "rebooking assistance" and living out of a hotel, they sent a list of options - none of which had the features we needed and originally booked. We found a place without their help (more expensive of course - booking on such short notice), and still haven't received a discount for our new stay.
They gave us a partial refund for the original stay, but then charged us for 2 extra nights (3 total) and didn't explain why.
Now the email I'm getting is:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Upholding the policies and standards that protect our community is very important to us. We’ve given your case and its details careful consideration, and we determined that you have not received yet the 20% Coupon for your rebooking assistance in your last reservation [xxxxxx] with your Host, Robert. As per checking on you last case, you have been promised to received 20% coupon not a discount to your next reservation. We understand that this might not be what you’d hoped for, but we came to this outcome because this is the policy and guidlines[sic] that we need to follow. Our review is complete now, and we won’t be able to offer additional support on this case at this time. If you’d like to provide feedback on Airbnb’s policies or your experience, you can do so any time at: airbnb.com/feedback Best regards, Edriel
They gave me a 20% discount on the three nights they charged me (where I only stayed one).
Do I have any options here - legal or otherwise?
This feels so wrong.
Update: They just decided to refund me for the nights that I didn't stay there, but said that they can't do anything more to help.

HELP! White algae/fungi
Just set up a 10 gallon and the morning after I’ve been hit with some nasty white stuff hanging off basically all the plants and hard scape. I’ve been running a filter which is completely bogged by this stuff. I also added some shrimp and a snail which I understand should help. I’ve been doing regular water changes, 60-70%, and have added bacteria and bio cleaners. I feed my Beta with regular pellets and blood worms, and have algae pellets for my corys (ik a 10 gallon isn’t enough, sue me). Idk why I have this crap, or how to get rid of it. Any tips? Thanks in advance y’all.

2023.06.10 22:44 unsubtlety Croton leaves turning pale brown and soft

Croton leaves turning pale brown and soft
I’ve had this croton for two years or so and this is the first big issue I’ve really had with it. Leaves are turning this off pale brown color and then dropping - they are soft, not crispy. This has been going on for about a month? I have looked all over the plant closely and don’t see any bugs at all.
It is still putting out new leaves and has a flower forming on the other branch.
More care info-
  • Water about every week or week and half with filtered water depending - I wait for the top layer of soil to be dry. At worst it’s lightly drooping before I water it, but I usually don’t let it go that far
  • fertilize about once a month with an 11-3-8 fertilizer (I switched to this from a 1-1-1 mix a few months ago, could that be the culprit?)
  • I think the soil is standard potting mix (I have not repotted it since I got it - maybe it’s time to do that, but I’m scared of making it mad lol)
  • sitting right next to a south-facing window
  • pot has drainage holes
  • humidity around the plant is usually around 65% according to my humidity monitor

2023.06.10 22:42 Pale_Ad938 Funny story truly

So to lighten up from my previous post(I’m sure this has probably been talked about though).
I was over at the dialysis clinic one day and mind you yes I have only been esrd for about a year and some change. Anyway this was at a Davita a few months back.
I was given some water from the Davita lines to take some meds with. Drank it and was completely happy. My mind began to wander as I looked at one of the techs dragging off the water from someone else’s completed session and I asked the nurse with a big grin on my face “can you drink the water that gets filtered?”
“She said yes how did it taste?” Haha
As I drank the rest of the cup I could only think of the movie tank girl. They had these little machines that like converted blood into water for people to drink in a future with no water. Lol

2023.06.10 22:34 t0ny_p3pp3r0ni New 55 Gallon Aquarium Stocking Advice

I have had my 55 gallon tank for about two weeks now with 4 neon blue dwarf gourami that I love. The tank has a mix of swords, anubias, and java ferns along with plenty of seiryu rocks and driftwood, that gives off a good amount of tannins into the water. I also have 2 Aquaclear 70s to filter the tank.
ANYWAY, I am trying to determine what other types of fish to put into the tank still and need advice. I am between two options: 1) making the tank a big community tank with lots of fish of differing types, or 2) getting 4 juvenile angelfish that my LFS says have lived together for some time and give them no problems.
What are you opinions on which route I should take and which fish (as well as how many) I should consider for that corresponding option? Current fish that I have been exploring and would like to have include: kuhli loach, rummy nose tetra, cardinal tetra, lemon tetra, harlequin rasbora, and rainbow fish. I would like to have an entertaining tank to watch filled with colors, while having interesting fish to watch. Let me know what you think!

2023.06.10 22:30 thatsitrrrt Whole roots

Hi everyone, Kava basically does not exist on my country, but I was able to purchase the whole root.
The thing is, every video or guide I look, people are consuming the grounded roots (either blending or squeezing it)
How am I supposed to consume the whole root? Should I but it in a mixer until it becomes a powder? Then just add water (40C) and "filter" it?

Zone 5B : Several plants need help. Can I revive/stop them from further deteriorating?
1) some kind of geranium - if anyone can tell me exactly what kind of geranium this is, I would appreciate it so much. I was told water all the way through when completely dry and full sun. I was gifted it, it was expensive and I’m terrified I will kill it like I’ve done in the past. I’m not sure if I should be keeping this indoor or outdoor. 2) I believe this is called a yucca tree. It looks like it’s going to die. Also the top is covered with whatever the black thing is, will it be able to grow new sprouts? One of the two sprouts look dead. 3) I got this hydrangea at Costco and almost as soon as I brought it home it began to brown. I watered it moderately and made sure had good drainage and gave it partial sun.. what is going on with it?
Thank you in advance. I SUCK at keeping my plants alive but would very much like to change this and help these plants regain their health.
