2023.06.10 23:17 nervous_Observer How coming out 3 years ago made me boring as hell.

I came out as demisexual pan romantic 2020 April 6th this is when I accepted myself and told the ones closest to me not everybody knows.
In fact I purely made this Reddit account to speak about my sexuality.
I am a disabled woman you see, I was pushed my whole life to be good in school the only thing I'm really able to do by myself or so said my family. So I did my best and people thought I liked school I didn't I never did. Liking school versus my own house is liking the rec center over liking the babysitter that doesn't let you do anything it's a pretty easy choice. I was allowed to do more in school so I liked being there and I got to escape my family who annoyed the crap out of me at times. After doing my all in school and graduating in the top 10%. There was really nothing left for me I didn't want to go to college because the thought of more school made me want to shoot myself cuz I'm not gifted academically I just work my fucking ass off. But working at something you don't like even if it's the lesser of two evils it still drains you. It took me years to convince my family then what they thought I liked I did not. With not going to school and not being accepted for any job I clung to dating cuz I was now allowed to talk to people online a gift for now being a legal adult. After being emotionally beat up and used prayed upon by guys on the internet which gave me nightmares.
I had gone from thinking I'm going to meet my prince charming and he's going to take me away from here to if I act the right way a guy is going to take me away from my parents and I could finally start acting like an actual adult instead only being an adult legally.
That was when I met my last boyfriend. He made me feel like he actually saw me like I was a real person and I could tell him stuff that I was afraid to say as a black woman it helped cuz he was a black man who went through all this stuff (pansexual) I loved him so deeply dearly. I was ferociously attracted to him for the first time ever it wasn't just a way it'll happen or if I just wait he'll fall in love with me all feel safe and I'll feel it right?
Sexual attraction coupled with the fact that he was such an interesting person was a whirlwind for me and that's when I knew that this is what it feels like. Do other people feel this all the time? And it led me on research that lasted even after we broke up
There's a lot more to that relationship even after we broke up. I find myself always going into the whole spiel and I don't need to.
the point is from the moment I discovered who I really am and decided I was going to try to be as authentic as possible, after I got over the initial shock of realizing I don't know who the fuck I am because I've been wearing a mask for so long I realized I'm fucking boring as hell!
Let me explain I had always been called the g word because I never hesitated to call women pretty but I never really felt anything behind that. And the only reason why I was obsessed with sex is because I thought it was an adult thing and adult things were cool to a fresh teenager and a teenager like me. Considering I was always treated as a child. children don't talk about sex and a girl who's gay wouldn't talk about having sex with guys a lot so that's how I got my reputation of being all talk and really wanting to have sex. This masking behavior of mine lead to a backlash with my mother and grandmother which gave me trauma that's too much to get into right now.
Even with this trauma making me dial down that mask people still knew me as that perverted person and it made me feel like that was the only interesting thing about me. That as well as making interesting things with my hobby of crochet and knitting.
So just to recap and get all the contacts to what was happening in my life.
Graduated with honors because of my family. I myself hated school with a burning passion I was allowed to talk to people on the internet but because I am a woman most of my interactions were with guys who wanted to bang me. And to just add a little bit more at the end of my junior year me and my immediate family moved three states over so we knew no one so I had no friends and no familiar surroundings. Talking to people online became my only social interaction with people my own freaking age after graduation.
I had finally become burnt out with trying to date and at least find a useful guy to move in with so I could feel more like an adult. I even tried to be an SW because my family would always joke about doing it constantly so I actually tried and then my mother was ashamed and everyone was uncomfortable. But I'm not ashamed and I'd still do it if I could do it safely and actually make money.
It felt like even people were putting pressure on me for my hobbies
And this now brings me to the reason I think I'm boring as hell and why I don't have many friends.
Now I expressly don't talk about relationships because now I know I can't get anything out of them not a house not money not even an orgasm is guaranteed so I at least want to pick someone I like talking to this person comes around rarely and usually they find out I'm boring and stop talking to me. Actually I feel like they want to talk about such a niche topic that something about it just feels hollow but even still.
With relationships out there goes some of the only reasons I think my family thought I was funny or interesting. I have no more dirty jokes or funny stories to tell because not only does Demi repel most people the people it doesn't don't seem to be the right fit for me either.
On to my hobbies I don't really have things I like. I have passions meaning I'm obsessed with everything I dare take interest in. besides stuff that's human nature.
I also forgot to mention around this time I got the library app Libby and hoopla. I always had a passion for books they seemed forbidden intangible to me because of issues with my disability. I always had a hard time reading and it was always a chore to get access to books I could never do it independently. so with these two apps I soon became a person who read. I read most everything from the latest books to very old books. Half the time when I knew a TV show or movie was coming out based on a book I just read the book instead. No one of my family thought I was pretentious. they were actually quite happy because I was extremely happy and still am over my access to books but I have realized something. that a lot of people my age seem to either have a contempt for books think books are okay or be pretentious dick widgets about books. Usually I could only find people early 30s to late 50s who want to talk to me about books.
I knit and crochet I've done so since I've been 18 everyone always wanted me to make this cool stuff like outfits flowers scrunchies stuffies my mom wants ugg boots and a bikini. However to be the realest real and the most honest of honest I like making blankets and scarves and shawls and hats that's literally it stuff I can make with minimal effort but I can make it fancy if I wanted to. I freaking hate making clothes I do. I feel it's such complicated math and I hate shaping actually fitting a garment to a person as hard as fuck. I have a size trick for hats.
I don't think anyone will be excited to hear about the 30th beanie I've made or the scarf with little trees on it.
You must think I'd hate relating to people like I'm some emo hipster with what I decided to get obsessed with next quilts I am obsessed with making quilts. With my newly realized gay audacity after almost 4 months of research thanks to one tiktok video I decided I was going to make two quilts.
Yes I completely hate relating to people my own age because now not only do I get made fun of but no one thinks it's very interesting that I'll probably spend two years piecing little octagons and squares for gifts for my siblings.
You'd think I'd be finished but I'm not in addition to that to turning my hobbies into relaxing things and not just reasons to give people stuff so they say wow I have also gotten backing to Sudoku, jigsaw puzzles and mahjong solitaire all on my phone. And I'm having a blast but this doesn't exactly make me the coolest 25-year-old
Apparently the only thing that makes me cool is the same thing that made me uncool when I was 12 years old anime.
Whether it was a gift from God or a sign that God is dead and we have killed him anime is mainstream and I can't stand it.
Don't get me wrong I'm not a pretentious gatekeeping dweeb. It's just that that's all people want to talk to me about. And they don't even want to have a good conversation about it. they just say if a anime is good or not and tell me I should watch it. Yell at me for only being a dubbed watcher if they are elitist enough and ask me for recommendations it doesn't even sound like a real conversation at the time it just sounds like we're reciting our watch list and we might as well be putting a thumbs up or thumbs down for how much deep thought anyone's opinion has. I feel like I should preface this by saying I've mostly talk to dudes with the most toxic personalities about anime that is usually how the conversation goes.
I'm honestly about to say that I don't like anime just so people stop talking to me about it in this way. I remember vividly telling someone my favorite anime of all time is yu yu Hakusho and he said what you know about it baby girl visible cringe the pain oh it hurts.
All this being said I don't know really where to find friends I've tried finding friends my own age I've tried in other Skittle communities only to be hit on by jerky guys and lesbians who don't respect me or ones that do and we're just staring at each other cuz we have nothing in common.

2023.06.10 23:12 LuminaryDarkSider Brave New World with an Hanna-Barbera Twist (ChatGPT helped here)

TLDR: what if the The Flintstones and The Jetsons exist in the same world at the same time, but separated not by time, but rather a caste system that similar in nature to Brave New World. I've had this notion since I read Brave New World when I was 11 and ChatGPT has helped me flush out the idea, anyone who wishes to expand upon this is welcome.
The Flintstones and The Jetsons exist in the same world, with The Flintstones representing a lower caste living in a reservation-like environment while The Jetsons represent a higher caste living in a technologically advanced society: 1. Socioeconomic Divide: In both The Flintstones and The Jetsons, there is a clear socioeconomic divide. The Flintstones depict a primitive Stone Age society where the characters live in modest stone houses and rely on animals for technology. On the other hand, The Jetsons portray a futuristic world where the characters reside in elaborate skyscrapers and enjoy advanced technology. This stark contrast in living conditions suggests a significant disparity between the two groups. 2. Limited Mobility: The Flintstones are depicted as being geographically confined to the Stone Age setting, often referred to as Bedrock. They have no access to advanced technology or the ability to travel beyond their prehistoric surroundings. In contrast, The Jetsons live high above the ground, relying on flying cars and other futuristic means of transportation. Their ability to move freely and explore different locations indicates a greater level of privilege and access. 3.Technological Advancement: The Jetsons possess highly advanced technology that simplifies their daily lives, such as robotic helpers, flying cars, and instant food preparation. In contrast, The Flintstones rely on rudimentary tools and animals for their day-to-day tasks. The stark difference in technological capabilities further supports the idea of a segregated society, with The Jetsons benefiting from advanced technology while The Flintstones are left behind. 4. Social Stratification: The Flintstones and The Jetsons both exhibit clear social hierarchies. In Brave New World, social classes are rigidly divided, with each caste having predetermined roles and functions. Similarly, The Flintstones' society resembles a lower caste living in a simpler, less technologically advanced state, while The Jetsons represent a higher caste enjoying the benefits of futuristic advancements. This parallel suggests that both shows explore the concept of caste systems, albeit in a less explicitly dystopian manner than in Brave New World.
  1. Fred Flintstone - John (The Savage): Both Fred Flintstone and John are portrayed as individuals who question and challenge the norms of their respective societies. They exhibit a sense of individuality and struggle to conform to the rigid expectations placed upon them.
  2. Wilma Flintstone - Lenina Crowne: Wilma Flintstone, like Lenina Crowne, can be seen as a character who represents the ideals of her society. They both adhere to the societal norms and expectations placed upon them, although they might experience occasional moments of questioning or rebellion.
  3. Barney Rubble - Bernard Marx: Barney Rubble and Bernard Marx share similarities in their experiences of feeling like outsiders in their respective societies. They both struggle with their self-perception and seek validation or a sense of belonging.
  4. Betty Rubble - Fanny Crowne: Betty Rubble and Fanny Crowne can be linked in the sense that they embody the conventional values and expectations of their societies. They are portrayed as adhering to social norms and being content with their assigned roles.
  5. George Jetson - Mustapha Mond: George Jetson, as the patriarch of the Jetson family, can be compared to Mustapha Mond, the World Controller in Brave New World. Both characters hold positions of authority within their respective societies and are responsible for upholding the established order.
  6. Jane Jetson - Linda Lysenko: Jane Jetson and Linda Lysenko share similarities as wives and mothers who navigate their roles within their respective societies. They are depicted as conforming to societal expectations while also experiencing occasional moments of dissatisfaction or longing for something different.
  7. Elroy Jetson - Reuben Rabinovitch: Elroy Jetson and Reuben Rabinovitch can be seen as young characters who are curious and have a potential for challenging the status quo. Although their roles and circumstances are different, both characters exhibit a certain level of intellectual curiosity.
    --- Main Story.
In a distant future, Earth is divided into two distinct societies: the advanced and technologically superior world of the Jetsons and the primitive reservation-like society of the Flintstones. However, these societies are not separate entities but rather different levels within the same global structure.
The Jetsons, residing high above in their futuristic utopia, are part of an elite caste that enjoys all the comforts and conveniences of advanced technology. Their lives are carefully controlled, with social roles predetermined and individuality suppressed. Soma, a potent substance, keeps the Jetsons docile and content.
Unbeknownst to the Jetsons, their society is intricately linked to the existence of the Flintstones. The Flintstones, representing a lower caste, live in a secluded area called Bedrock, akin to a reservation. They are intentionally kept in a primitive state by the ruling class, who view them as a source of nostalgia and a reminder of the past.
The protagonist, Fred Flintstone, becomes disillusioned with his confined existence and yearns for something more. Through a series of events, Fred discovers a hidden passage that connects Bedrock to the Jetsons' world. Intrigued, he ventures into the futuristic society, where he encounters George Jetson, who secretly questions the monotony of his life.
Fred and George form an unlikely alliance, determined to uncover the truth about their shared world. They navigate the complexities of their respective societies, exposing the dark underbelly of control, manipulation, and inequality. Along the way, they encounter other characters from both worlds who struggle with their roles and seek freedom.
As their journey progresses, Fred and George learn about the origin of their society, discovering that it was intentionally engineered by a powerful ruling class to maintain control and prevent societal upheaval. They face moral dilemmas, make alliances, and confront the harsh realities of their world.
Together, Fred and George rally the disillusioned members of both societies, initiating a revolution that challenges the oppressive systems in place. Their goal is to bridge the gap between the castes, dismantle the control mechanisms, and allow for individuality, choice, and genuine human connections.
The story culminates in a climactic confrontation between the ruling class and the united forces of the Jetsons and the Flintstones. Themes of rebellion, sacrifice, and the search for true freedom resonate throughout the narrative, as characters from both worlds join forces to shape a new society where individuality and humanity can thrive.
As the revolution gains momentum, resistance spreads throughout both the Jetsons and Flintstones societies. The characters from both worlds start to question the predefined roles assigned to them and challenge the oppressive systems that have kept them divided.
Wilma Flintstone and Jane Jetson form a powerful alliance, embodying the strength and determination of women in their fight for freedom and equality. Together, they inspire others to break free from their prescribed roles and contribute to the movement.
Meanwhile, Elroy Jetson and Pebbles Flintstone, two young and curious individuals, uncover a hidden truth about the origins of their world. They stumble upon ancient documents that reveal a forgotten history, exposing the manipulative tactics used by the ruling class to create and maintain the caste-based society.
As the revolution gains traction, the ruling class retaliates, using their technological prowess to suppress the uprising. They deploy their advanced gadgets and employ psychological tactics to suppress the rebellion and maintain their grip on power.
However, Fred and George, driven by their determination and the hope for a better future, rally their comrades and develop ingenious strategies to counter the ruling class. They leverage the primitive yet resourceful skills of the Flintstones and the innovative technology of the Jetsons to outwit their oppressors.
The battle reaches its climax as the revolutionaries breach the fortified barriers between the two worlds. The Flintstones and Jetsons unite, demonstrating that their shared humanity and resilience are more powerful than any technological advantage the ruling class possesses.
In a final showdown, the revolutionaries expose the truth to the masses, revealing the manipulations and lies that have perpetuated their divided existence. The people, awakened to the possibilities of genuine freedom and self-determination, rise up as a collective force.
Together, they dismantle the oppressive structures and establish a new society that embraces the values of individuality, compassion, and cooperation. The remnants of the ruling class are held accountable for their actions, and measures are put in place to prevent the reemergence of a caste-based system.
The story concludes with the Flintstones and Jetsons, once separated by a vast divide, now living together in a harmonious society that integrates the best aspects of both worlds. The triumph of the revolution signals a new era where the potential of humanity is unlocked, free from the shackles of an oppressive past.
In the aftermath of the revolution, the integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons faces the daunting task of rebuilding and redefining their world. They embark on a collective effort to establish a fair and just governance system that safeguards individual freedoms while promoting equality and mutual respect.
Drawing upon the wisdom and experiences of both the Flintstones and the Jetsons, the new society embraces a balanced approach to progress and technology. They recognize the importance of preserving the simplicity and connection to nature from the Flintstones' world, while also harnessing the transformative power of advanced technology from the Jetsons' world to enhance their quality of life.
Education becomes a cornerstone of the new society, fostering critical thinking, creativity, and empathy. The people strive to learn from the mistakes of their past and actively work to cultivate an inclusive and compassionate culture that values diversity and encourages open dialogue.
Fred and George, as respected figures who played pivotal roles in the revolution, assume leadership positions to guide the transitional period. With their shared experiences and understanding of both worlds, they become advocates for unity, collaboration, and the continuous pursuit of a better future for all.
The new society also recognizes the importance of honoring and preserving their history. They establish museums and cultural centers that celebrate the unique heritage of both the Flintstones and the Jetsons, fostering a sense of identity and connection to their collective past.
Over time, the integrated society flourishes, with advancements in technology and social progress benefiting all its inhabitants. Collaboration and cooperation become the norm, as individuals from diverse backgrounds work together to address the challenges that arise.
However, the memory of the oppressive past remains a reminder of the fragility of freedom. The society remains vigilant, nurturing a culture that values individual rights, personal growth, and community well-being. They understand that maintaining a balance between technological advancement and human connection is crucial for the longevity and sustainability of their newfound harmony.
The story concludes with a sense of hope and optimism for the future, as the integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons embraces their shared humanity and collective potential. They stand as a testament to the resilience and transformative power of individuals coming together to challenge the status quo and shape a brighter world for generations to come.
As time passes, the integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons thrives, embracing the principles of equality, freedom, and harmony. Their collective journey becomes an inspiration for neighboring societies still grappling with similar issues of oppression and social stratification.
The integrated society reaches out to these neighboring communities, sharing their experiences and offering support and guidance in dismantling oppressive systems. Through peaceful exchange and dialogue, they foster a network of interconnected societies committed to building a more equitable and inclusive world.
As the integrated society continues to evolve, they recognize the importance of sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. They invest in clean energy technologies, conservation efforts, and the restoration of natural habitats, working hand in hand with the land and embracing a more balanced relationship with their environment.
Culture and the arts flourish in this integrated society, as creativity and expression are celebrated and valued. Artists from various backgrounds collaborate to weave together the rich tapestry of their shared heritage, creating works that reflect their journey and inspire future generations.
Education remains a cornerstone of their society, evolving to meet the changing needs and challenges of the world. They prioritize comprehensive education that nurtures critical thinking, empathy, and global citizenship. By empowering individuals with knowledge and fostering a lifelong love of learning, they ensure the continuous growth and progress of their society.
Throughout the integrated society, there is a deep sense of community and interconnectedness. Social support systems are strengthened, and individuals actively participate in civic life, contributing their unique skills and perspectives to the betterment of society as a whole. Collaboration and cooperation are not just buzzwords but integral values that guide their interactions and decision-making processes.
Fred and George, who played pivotal roles in the revolution, gradually transition from positions of formal leadership to become respected elders and mentors. They pass on their wisdom and experiences, helping to shape future generations and ensuring the continuity of the society's principles and values.
As the story comes to a close, it is evident that the integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons has created a lasting legacy. Their journey from oppression to liberation serves as a beacon of hope for other societies, inspiring them to challenge existing systems and envision a future where all individuals can thrive.
The story ultimately highlights the transformative power of unity, empathy, and the shared pursuit of a more just and compassionate world. It reminds us that the strength of humanity lies not in our divisions but in our ability to overcome them, forging new paths towards a future defined by cooperation, respect, and the celebration of our shared humanity.
With the integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons serving as a shining example of progress and unity, their influence begins to spread far and wide. The neighboring societies that once struggled with oppression and inequality are inspired by their success and embark on their own journeys of transformation.
Leaders from these neighboring societies seek guidance and collaboration with the integrated society, recognizing the wisdom and experience they possess. Through partnerships and exchange programs, knowledge is shared, and cooperative efforts are established to address systemic issues and foster sustainable development.
Together, these societies form an alliance, known as the United World Coalition, committed to creating a global community that upholds the principles of equality, justice, and environmental stewardship. They work collaboratively on a range of initiatives, including eradicating poverty, ensuring universal access to quality education and healthcare, and promoting cultural diversity and inclusivity.
The United World Coalition becomes a powerful force for positive change, advocating for the rights of marginalized communities and challenging oppressive systems wherever they exist. By leveraging their collective resources and expertise, they actively work towards creating a world free from discrimination, prejudice, and social inequality.
As the Coalition expands its influence, it faces resistance from those who seek to maintain the status quo and perpetuate division. However, their shared vision and unwavering determination allow them to overcome these obstacles, forging a path towards a more equitable and sustainable future.
In this global movement, Fred and George, revered as visionary leaders, assume vital roles in guiding the United World Coalition. Their experiences and wisdom earned from the revolution serve as a guiding light for this unprecedented endeavor, inspiring unity and collective action on a global scale.
Through ongoing collaboration and the exchange of ideas, the member societies of the United World Coalition continue to learn from one another, adapting their policies and practices to foster greater harmony and prosperity. They prioritize the well-being of all people and the preservation of the planet, recognizing the interconnectedness of social, economic, and environmental issues.
As the Coalition progresses, they leverage advancements in technology and innovation to tackle complex challenges. Sustainable energy solutions, responsible resource management, and breakthroughs in healthcare and agriculture become key focal points, ensuring the well-being of present and future generations.
Education remains at the heart of the Coalition's mission, with a renewed emphasis on fostering critical thinking, empathy, and global citizenship. By equipping individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate an ever-changing world, they empower them to actively participate in shaping their communities and contribute to the greater good.
As the story concludes, the United World Coalition stands as a testament to the transformative power of unity and collaboration. Their collective efforts have created a world where societal divisions have been replaced by a shared sense of humanity, where differences are celebrated, and where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.
The integrated society of former Flintstones and Jetsons, once confined to their own worlds, played a crucial role in igniting a global movement towards a more just and sustainable future. Their journey from oppressive systems to a harmonious and inclusive society became the catalyst for change, inspiring countless individuals and communities to join the collective effort.
The story leaves us with a profound sense of hope, reminding us that by transcending divisions and embracing our shared humanity, we have the power to shape a world where equality, freedom, and compassion prevail. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity and the boundless potential that lies within us all.

2023.06.10 23:07 Prestigious-Day-345 The map doesn not slides properly when zoom

Hi, I'm learning flutter and I don't know it happens.

I have a flutter map widget. The functionality is simple. When I tap on any side of the map I retrieve the coordinates and then I convert them into address and show it in a text field.

When I don't zoom the map all works fine, but when I try to zoom and then tap on the map, the market is not on the place I tap. Why it happens?
Thanks!!

2023.06.10 23:05 cloverduck22 My two cents on Shiny Happy People

As somebody who is not American nor had any exposure to Christian fundamentalism, but sort of discovered the Duggars on TV reruns around 2015ish (wasn't aware of Josh's crimes then) and watched a few episodes out of curiosity, mainly in regards to the sheer size of the family and their culture, I wanted to add my two cents lol. I've read a lot of posts on here and found other people's thoughts super interesting and wanted to join in.
I think one of the biggest points of clarity the doc series provides, especially for non-Americans, is regarding the influence of the weird, regressive, bible-driven fanaticism that has infiltrated US politics. It did well to highlight the scale of IBLP and adjacent + similar institutions. It suddenly makes sense why there was such a push against Roe v Wade and the success of the overturning. It explains why so many young conservative politicians get to where they are despite sounding like lunatics.
I always thought the older Duggar kids were inarticulate or a bit clunky with their words. The parentification of the older girls and being roped into that system without a choice now makes it obvious they missed out on an education, including exposure to (non-biblical) literature. Which is so vital. Makes me sad. And now it's filtering down to their kids (not the parentification, the sparse homeschooling).
I can't decide if Michelle is worse than Jim-Bob. Jim-Bob is all about the finances and using money as leverage. He lied shamelessly during Josh's trial and prioritised him over his daughters. I think in the beginning he probably was sincerely looking for a good moral structure. I don't think for a second though that Michelle has ever been under his thumb, she only wants that unquestioning obedience for her daughters in their marriages. She performs the role, including that voice, and I think she enjoys that it gave her a sense of identity. Honestly it is frightening that she kept popping kids out, and it seems that because she could keep offloading her work onto the older girls without a shred of empathy she saw the "beauty" in their lifestyle. Also, her denseness, glee and lack of concern about the potential consequences of blanket training makes me wonder if she's detached from reality.
The Gotthard abuse makes me wonder about the patterns of abuse in other fundie institutes.
I have still not heard Derek utter a single word of value on screen lol.
I was left in awe of the ex-IBLP members who escaped their horrifying circumstances and then have to do all that work to deprogram and heal and rebuild. Years of work. I related to them a little in that sense because I have quite severe longstanding family based trauma all the way from early childhood and am having to unlearn detrimental conditioning and learn self-worth and how to validate myself and my own voice. That stuff is really, really rough to do.
I think another season expanding on similar institutes + with more of the duggars altogether would be a good development.

2023.06.10 22:46 jamesbronson123 How do I come out to my best friend, as a middle-aged man? Need some support/love.

There are a lot of coming out stories, both on reddit and in media, but they're all about younger people, like teenagers or people in their 20s, like "Love, Simon". I'm so lost and confused, and I could use some support/love.
I'm a 40 year-old man. A few years ago, I concluded and accepted I was gay. My family doesn't know yet (conservative Christian family), but people at work know, etc. Oh, by the way, I am single.
My best friend, who is also 40M, doesn't know I'm gay. I want to tell him, but I don't know how. Let's call him Brian. We've been friends for 25+ years. We've been through a divorce (his, to a woman, not mine) and deaths in our families (both sides), and so we've been there for each other through thick and thin. And, we really don't have other friends. He's dating a woman right now, and he has a son, but aside from that, his only other friend is me. Same for me. He's my only friend.
Now when I say "only" friend, I don't want to give the impression that we're both antisocial or loners. Just that, we consider each other especially important compared to acquaintances and so on.
Now, he knows I have never been in a relationship or dated. He never really asked me if I am dating or not, but he always knew that I am a career-focused guy, and I was also moving around for work every so few years, so I never really got a chance to date or settle down.
A few months ago, he suggested that I go online dating to meet women, as all his dates post-divorce were met online, so he's had success meeting women online. He only brought it up casually, and never pushed it. And pretty much aside from this, as I said above, he's never asked me about my dating life. He's never asked about my sex life too, lol.
Do I think he's homophobic? When we were in college together, so like 20 years ago, he kinda was as he always avoided the gay areas of town, even when it would be convenient to drive through to get from A to B. Is that homophobic? Maybe, but he has never been explicitly so. We never make "gay" jokes even as "bros", if that matters. He never uses derogatory terms even as a joke.
Recently, we were watching the news together and the issue of teaching LGBTQ issues in Florida schools came up. It was just a casual chat in response to the news. I didn't really mention my stance. He did say, though, that "I don't mind whether people are gay or straight, but keep it to yourself, teaching this to kids in 3rd grade is just too young". Is that homophobic? His "I don't mind whether people are gay or straight" seems to suggest he's not entirely homophobic.
Anyways, yeah, why am I afraid to tell him I'm gay? He's my single best friend for 25+ years. It is downright terrifying to think that I could lose the one person in my life (besides my family, who I also haven't told yet, but that's a different matter). Younger kids these days have such large social circles and can make friends easily if their best friend rejects them. But at 40 years old, the stakes are higher. On the one hand, I think he would accept me especially since he probably won't want to lose me as a friend either. But, the uncertainty, the risk, just too damn high, it seems. There are times when it seems hiding my sexual orientation from him for the rest of our lives would be worth it, to preserve the friendship. I know, if I tell him and he accepts, our friendship can get stronger. But...
I guess I don't have a specific question. But, how should I tell him? Should I even? Any one who is middle-aged and came out to their best friends? I know you guys don't know Brian, but based on what I wrote, does it seem like he is homophobic? Any support or love, I really need right now.
Edit: Should clarify, I am not attracted to Brian in any way. If that matters. He's the closest thing I have to a brother, and that is all.

2023.06.10 22:36 Tervia Should /r/evnova join the blackout in protest of Reddit's API changes?

tl;dr Reddit's shutting down third party apps at the expense of usability and in the name of profit, and is acting like the Bureau in the process. Should we join the sitewide blackout starting on June 12th, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely, to pressure reddit to rescind these changes so that third party apps may continue?
Hiya,
As you're probably aware, many subreddits will be shutting down on June 12th through the 14th in protest of recent API changes announced by Reddit. These will charge relatively high rates above a certain threshold, similar to Twitter, and would have the effect of killing major third party Reddit apps. Reddit is not obligated to run features at cost, of course. And if the API is a financial burden, then it seems appropriate to have larger users share the burden. But charging rates that would be likely be several times in excess of what the average user brings Reddit in ad revenue, while forbidding third party apps from running ads of their own, makes it clear that they do not want to share the financial load. They want to kill competition to their official app. People who use third party mobile apps trust their app of choice over the official one for better user experience, mod tools, or accessibility features, and the official one demands much more of your personal data. The official reddit app does not play nice with screen readers on iOS, so those who are visually impaired have to rely on third party reddit apps instead. Even if you don't use a third party app, there's a good chance that a poster or commenter you liked does. One of the third party apps, Apollo, even got a name drop and other shoutouts by Apple in their latest Worldwide Developer Conference keynote, To lose these apps would be a loss to the community.

Reddit's "PR" Campaign

In the process to rolling this out, Reddit has not enkindled much, if any, goodwill, I'd argue. They've gone to blame the developer of iOS third party app Apollo of "excessive" API overuse despite staying within currently sanctioned limits. They have accused the same app developer of "threatening" reddit:
Steve (Steve Huffman, i.e. spez, Reddit CEO) : "Apollo threatened us, said they’ll “make it easy” if Reddit gave them $10 million."
Steve: "This guy behind the scenes is coercing us. He's threatening us."
Even after Reddit admitted on a recorded phone call that said perception was a misunderstanding:
Christian Selig (i.e. iamthatis, Apollo app developer): "I said 'If you want Apollo to go quiet'. Like in terms of- I would say it's quite loud in terms of its API usage."
Reddit: "Oh. Go quiet as in that. Okay, got it. Got it. Sorry."
Reddit: "That's a complete misinterpretation on my end. I apologize. I apologize immediately."
And then accused the same developer of gaslighting the community... with no evidence presented:
Steve: His “joke” is the least of our issues. His behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.
Christian: Please feel free to give examples where I said something differently in public versus what I said to you. I give you full permission.
It would have honestly felt better if they were just announcing that they were killing third party app access outright. But instead, we've been presented with a pricing structure that looks like it was meant specifically to kill third party apps, them acting like that isn't, and accusing third party app devs of being incompetent instead of asking themselves why others would want to use apps that aren't theirs in the first place. spez's latest AMA yesterday is only more salt in the wound, offering only token concessions so that a few accessibility-focused third party apps can continue unharmed, while other third party apps have announced their shutdowns because of these changes:
Apollo (iOS app): Apollo will close down on June 30th. Reddit’s recent decisions and actions have unfortunately made it impossible for Apollo to continue. Thank you so, so much for all the support over the years. ❤️
Reddit is Fun (Android app): RIF will shut down on June 30, 2023, in response to Reddit's API changes
Sync for Reddit (Android app): Sync will shut down on June 30, 2023
Relay for Reddit (Android app): The pricing is prohibitively expensive and it cannot be ad supported. And, even if you paid a subscription fee of several dollars a month to continue to use Relay, you still wouldn't have access to any NSFW content in it. My opinion is that they want third party apps gone despite saying otherwise.

The Bigger Picture

And these changes are not being done in a vacuum. Reddit has made other changes to take features away from this site and what people have built on top of it. Namely:
Spez said in the latest AMA that old.reddit, the original desktop website for reddit, isn't going away. Then again, Spez also said years ago that "The API isn't going anywhere", and while it isn't going away, it is going towards places that will be worse for us all. That, combined with a list of broken promises, as compiled by the mods of /AskHistorians, makes Reddit's word as solid as Drop Bear Repellent is effective, in my eyes (though Reddit has been making improvements, in fairness).

Should we do something in response to this?

Now, that brings things to this sub.
/evnova is a very niche subreddit. While new reddit is happy to claim we are within the top 20% of subreddits in size, we are ultimately about a 20+ year old series of abandonware single player games. Modders and wiki editors like SharkyNebula and developers like Peter Cartwright with Cosmic Frontier: Override keep this series alive, but things are generally quiet for the most part.
Over 4,000 subreddits have announced some form of shutdown in protest of Reddit's API changes. Most people on this website probably don't know this subreddit even exists, but together with several default subs, I am open to joining as a means to show that we are willing to sacrifice our place here in the hopes that the collective pressure with other subs will compel reddit to revise or rescind these changes, so that major third party apps may continue to exist and that their users - members of all the communities around us - may continue to enjoy them. As a site dependent on user content and volunteer moderation, Reddit is nothing without its userbase, and with a show of protest and maybe some bad press, perhaps Reddit will change their mind. If it doesn't work, then, well, it'll beat doing nothing and having it happen anyways, and I guess that'll shows how much reddit values you, the user. And with comments from the CEO like:
We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive. Unlike some of the 3P apps, we are not profitable.
If this goes through unabated, what feature will reddit put on the chopping block next?
Now, with all this wall of text said, I have said many times that I am an absentee mod here. I do not believe that I have the authority to unilaterally shut down the subreddit. So I come here to ask you, the memberbase: Should we join the subreddit blackout, be it for 48 hours or indefinitely until Reddit backtracks on their changes and allows major 3rd party apps to continue?
Please leave your feedback here. A decision will be made in no more than 24 hours based on what you think and say.
Thank you,
Tervia

2023.06.10 22:36 a_Hufflepuff_Girl Husband says I'm a Deist, but I don't agree

My base belief is that God created the universe and tends to let it run its course with occasional intervention affected by prayer & great need. There is a "great plan" set in motion since the beginning, but God can bend the path from time to time which won't cause too much of a ripple to his endgame. While I believe in the basic morals of Christianity, I do not believe the bible to be the word of God because it was written and also translated by biased people. I also don't believe in original sin.
Husband says I am a Deist, subscribing to "The Clock/Watch Maker" ideology, but Deists believe that God does not intervene after the creation of the universe. So, this is not an accurate name, IMO, since I do believe God intervenes at times.
Thoughts? Anyone else have a name for it?

2023.06.10 22:21 Tp889449 how do i go about generating triangles for mesh destruction/creation

so heres my current thoughts, i make a plane of points, use perlin noise to offset them vertically for simple procedural terrain, and whenever the player uses a tool on the ground i create 4 points in a diamond shape around where they hit, and destroy any points inside that diamond, along with creating a point in the center that is pushed in based off the normal of the surface hit, to make the appearance of a diamond-shaped simple dent
but then i realized, how do i go about generating the triangles that fill all these points? how do i tell which order of verticies (assuming im taking a vertex, taking the 2 closest verticies, and filling them with a triangle) is clockwise? (using mesh components it seems i need to make triangles in a clockwise order to prevent incorrect normals) and how do i go about telling if a vertex is "inside" the diamond of verticies, or really any group of verts?

2023.06.10 22:14 v4mpeira [F4A] Looking for long-term RP partners for all sorts of fandoms!

Hello!
I am (19, female) and am looking for some new roleplay partners & RP centered around some fandom universes below. At the minute, I am looking to write as canon female characters in either FxM or FxF pairings.
In our roleplay, I'd love for us to take on the roles of canon/already-established characters. We can select our favorite protagonists, antagonists, or even side characters to portray. The possibilities are endless, and I believe it's through these characters that we can breathe life into the fandom universe.
I am also willing to make exceptions in some cases for Canon/OC depending on the fandom.
About Me / What I Am Looking For
I write in the third-person, past tense, and consider myself literate. I have done both quick-fire and novella- length stories but prefer something somewhere in the middle. Medium-length replies that keep the story moving forward, while providing the other with opportunities to react. My sweet spot is somewhere between two and five paragraphs, per reply. But I am happy to do less or more; depending on your preference and what the scene requires.
I like to leave plot-based stuff all up for discussion. Things can get dark, as dark as we would like. Or we can have stuff on the lighter side. I thrive crafting vivid descriptions that transport us to the heart of action. From heart-stopping chase scenes to spine-tingling encounters in dark and mysterious settings. I value collaborative storytelling where we can shape the story together, playing supporting characters, and delve into the depths of our plot.
I’m looking for someone who is willing to dive deep into the world we create. It would be fantastic to explore the everyday lives, relationships, and personal struggles of our characters, while also delving into epic battles, world-saving missions, and everything in between.
I adore tropes. They are popular for a reason, right? Some of my favorite tropes include: * Enemies to lovers (anything along the lines of initial distrust is great); unlikely allies. * Hurt/Comfort, Angst. * Polar Opposites * Redemption/Corruption * Aftermath of war: Punishment, Rehabilitation, Rebuilding. * Trauma Bonds/Unfortunate Circumstances * Betrayal/Revenge * SlowBurns/Friends to Lovers
Here is a list of fandoms along with the characters I can write as in them:
Video Games
The Last of Us (Ellie Williams).
Silent Hill: Maria, Angela Orosco, Heather Mason.
Resident Evil: (Jill Valentine, Rebecca Chambers, Claire Redfield, Ada Wong, Ashley Graham).
Final Fantasy: Aerith Gainsborough, Tifa Lockhart.
RDR2: Sadie Adler
Detroit: Become Human (Kara, Chloe, North).
Movies/Shows/Books
Marvel (Gwen Stacy, Natasha Romanoff, Felicia Hardy, Wanda Maximoff, Mary Jane Watson, Jean Grey, Emma Frost).
DC (Harley Quinn, Kara Danvers, Dinah Drake, Selina Kyle, Diana Prince, Zatanna Zatara).
Harry Potter (Hermione Granger).
Star Wars (Ahsoka Tano, Leia Organa, Bo-Katan Kryze, Padme Amidala).
I am pretty much fine with any pairings for these characters! Please know that I am more than willing to welcome any idea you might have.
If any of this sounds interesting to you, or you think we might get along, please, do not hesitate to message me! If you’ve messaged me before and I haven’t responded, please feel free to try again, as my Reddit messages can be very glitchy!

2023.06.10 22:13 terevos2 Save 3rd Party Reddit Apps

TLDR

Reformed is going into restricted mode (read-only) on June 12 for 48 hours to join the protest against API change.
But really, read this.

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy, including Reformed (read below for details). Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it much more difficult to keep doing what we love.

Why is reformed joining this black out?

First, we want to make it very clear that we do NOT view this blackout as a Gospel issue. As a decent-size subreddit that is centered around Christianity, to do something like this could communicate that it is a gospel issue or that this action is representative of what Christ would want us to do, but that is not true. This is not a spiritual issue, but one where we have Christian liberty to participate or not.
There are a number of reasons the mod team thinks we should join the blackout. Some items are higher priority than others and various mods have differing primary reasons and maybe even don’t care that much about the other reasons. So in no particular order here are a few (but not all) the reasons we’ve decided to join this blackout:
  1. To register our dissent with this decision and the direction this decision represents. Reddit had always been friendly towards open source, 3rd party apps, and browser extensions (RES and Mod Toolbox) until more recently. This trend might be inevitable, but it's worth an attempt to fight against it instead of simply accepting defeat immediately.
  2. The official app does not support accessibility on iOS and so the seeing impaired will be adversely affected by not having 3rd party apps. blind (and other seeing impaired subreddits) may not actually be able to function without the 3rd party apps that they use.
  3. Most of the mods and many of the members of Reformed rely on 3rd party apps for browsing. Making modding harder and making participation harder by taking away the tools that we use to participate (and mod) will result in a lower quality subreddit.

Some other notes

  1. We (the mods of reformed) are taking part in this blackout for the above reasons (and more). And thus you (the members of this subreddit) are affected, too, but that doesn’t mean you need to support this blackout or that we’re forcing you into a particular viewpoint here. But we are using the tools at our disposal to bring attention to an issue.
  2. As stated above, we do not want this to communicate something about the gospel that is not true. Use Reddit or don't, but this is primarily a business issue, not a spiritual one. If you don’t like a business or what a business is doing, you take your business elsewhere. Or if you really like that business, but there’s an issue, you might raise a complaint about it. That’s what we’re attempting to do: raise a complaint that reddit admins and execs will hear in a way consistent with the broader complaint from all of Reddit. We know we’re small, but joining in a larger complaint in the same way both aids the effort and allows us to make an impact as a smaller subreddit.
  3. What does “going dark” mean for reformed? Some subs are going private. However, what we’re going to do is go into restricted mode on June 12th for 48 hours. This means that you will be able to view all of reformed, but no one will be able to post or comment. (We will make an exception for the Unreached People Group of the Week - and maybe we’ll all actually read it this time! :-)

2023.06.10 22:13 v4mpeira [F4A] Looking for long-term RP partners for all sorts of fandoms!

*In the depths there are 34 yiga schematics you can collect with yiga designed machines!! Also with each yiga schematic, there is a treasure chest with 20 crystallized charges, that's a total of 680 crystallized charges, almost enough for 7 battery upgrades!!
*If you shoot an arrow with a Muddlebud attached at a Battle Talus, it will aggravate the Talus and throw off ALL enemies that were on board!!
*When fighting a Flux Construct, if you take out a weapon and fuse it with one of the Flux Construct squares, it will cause it to fall apart!! Alternatively using Ultrahand on the head, you can wiggle it until it detaches, also causing it to fall apart!!
*Turn Luminous Stone into gems by feeding them to Dondons, located in the Bronas Forest by Lake Floria and collecting their "poop" (this is one of the best ways of farming rupees in TOTK!!!
*Fuse a Lizalfos Tail to a weapon to make a whip (and use the elemental ones for a magical whip)!!
*Put a beehive on a stick to create a bee wand, which sends bees after enemies and briefly distracts them when you wave it. Alternatively attaching a beehive to an arrow and firing from a Lynel bow with x3 or x5, it will then create 3 or 5 hives respectively that will attack enemies!!

2023.06.10 21:58 Dear_Relative1055 Play sound periodically

Hi everyone.
I started fiddling with Manim a few days ago. I wanted to mess around with polyrhythms and Manim looked promissing.
I currently have 20 dots rotating around a circle at different speeds based on the "radians" parameter of the Rotating animation.
I have one thing left to do... Play a sound each time a dot passes angle PI/2 on the circle.
I'm not quite sur how to accomplish this with the Rotating animation.
I have a few things in mind I could explorer, but they don't seem like great options.
  1. Use the parameter time_offset in the self.add_sound method, but that would mean I would need to calculate upfront all the times at wich different sounds will play and add them with offsets. I'm pretty sure there exists a more elegant way with updaters.
  2. Perhaps not use the Rotating animation and use dt in an updater to position the dot on the circle and check the angle to play a sound in the updater?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
See the following code I have so far.

class Test(Scene): def construct(self): # settings total_time = 1 * 60 colors = [ "#0289FE", "#FC5105", "#FBBD04", "#B232D1", "#78D109", "#1FDEFF", "#FF1042", "#009DFF", "#FF4F04", "#FFB904", "#B530D1", "#74CE03", "#29E0FF", "#FF0C41", "#019DFF", "#FF5007", "#FFBA03", "#B630D3", "#75CF05", "#1EDFFE", "#FF0E43" ] dots = VGroup() circle = Circle(radius=3, color=WHITE, stroke_width=1, stroke_opacity=1) initialPosition = circle.point_at_angle(PI/2) def create_dots(colors): dots = VGroup() for i in range(len(colors)): dot = Dot(color=colors[i], radius=0.05).move_to(initialPosition) dots.add(dot) return dots def create_lines(colors, dots): lines = VGroup() for i in range(len(dots)): if (i == len(dots)): break for j in range(i, len(dots)): if (j == len(dots) - 1): break line = always_redraw(lambda i=i, j=j: Line(start=dots[i].get_center(), end=dots[j+1].get_center(), color=colors[i], stroke_width=0.5)) lines.add(line) return lines def createDotAnimations(dots): animations = [] for index, dot in enumerate(dots): animations.append(Rotating(dot, radians=index * TAU, about_point=ORIGIN, run_time=total_time)) return animations dots = create_dots(colors) lines = create_lines(colors, dots) self.add(circle, dots, lines) self.play(*createDotAnimations(dots))

2023.06.10 21:58 teruteru-fan-sam 27 club+ ratio

Informative, but however I can't believe that he didn't talk about how The 27 Club is an informal list consisting mostly of popular musicians, artists, actors, and other celebrities who died at age 27. Although the claim of a "statistical spike" for the death of musicians at that age has been refuted by scientific research, it remains a cultural phenomenon, with many celebrities who die at 27 noted for their high-risk lifestyles. Beginning with the deaths of several 27-year-old popular musicians between 1969 and 1971, dying at the age of 27 came to be, and remains, a perennial subject of popular culture, celebrity journalism, and entertainment industry lore. This cultural phenomenon, which came to be known as the "27 Club," attributes special significance to popular musicians, artists, actors, and other celebrities who died at age 27, often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse or violent means such as homicide, suicide, or transportation-related accidents. Several exhibitions have been devoted to the idea, as well as novels, films and stage plays. The cultural phenomenon also gave rise to an urban myth that celebrity deaths are more common at 27, a claim that has been refuted by statistical research. Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. Blues musician Robert Johnson, who died in 1938, is one of the earliest popular musicians to be included in lists of 27 Club members.
According to Hendrix and Kurt Cobain's biographer Charles R. Cross, the growing importance of the media—Internet, magazines, and television—and the response to an interview of Cobain's mother were jointly responsible for such theories. An excerpt from a statement that Cobain's mother, Wendy Fradenburg Cobain O'Connor, made in the Aberdeen, Washington, newspaper The Daily World—"Now he's gone and joined that stupid club. I told him not to join that stupid club."—referred to Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison dying at the same age, according to Cross. Other authors share his view. On the other hand, Eric Segalstad, writer of The 27s: The Greatest Myth of Rock & Roll, assumed that Cobain's mother referred to the death of his two uncles and his great-uncle, all of whom had also committed suicide. According to Cross, the events have led a "set of conspiracy theorists [to suggest] the absurd notion that Kurt Cobain intentionally timed his death so he could join the 27 Club".
In 2011, seventeen years after Cobain's death, Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27, prompting a renewed swell of media attention devoted to the club once again. Three years earlier, she had expressed a fear of dying at that age.
An individual does not necessarily have to be a musician to qualify as a "member" of the 27 Club. Rolling Stone included television actor Jonathan Brandis, who committed suicide in 2003, in a list of 27 Club members. Anton Yelchin, who had played in a punk rock band but was primarily known as a film actor, was also described as a member of the club upon his death in 2016. Likewise, Jean-Michel Basquiat has been included in 27 Club lists, despite the relative brevity of his music career, and his prominence as a painter.
According to music biographer Charles R. Cross, "The number of musicians who passed away at 27 is truly remarkable by any standard. Though humans die regularly at all ages, there is a statistical spike for musicians who die at 27." Despite the cultural significance given to musician and celebrity deaths at age 27, the claim that they are statistically more common at this age is an urban myth, refuted by scientific research. A study by university academics published in the British Medical Journal in December 2011 concluded that there was no increase in the risk of death for musicians at the age of 27, stating that there were equally small increases at ages 25 and 32. The study noted that young adult musicians have a higher death rate than the general young adult population, surmising that "fame may increase the risk of death among musicians, but this risk is not limited to age 27". The selection criteria for the musicians included in the study, based on having scored a UK No. 1 album between 1956 and 2007, excluded several notable members of the 27 Club, including Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison, Pete Ham, and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. A 2014 article at The Conversation suggested that statistical evidence shows popular musicians are most likely to die at the age of 56 (2.2% compared to 1.3% at 27).
Because the 27 Club is entirely notional, there is no official membership. The following table lists people described as "members" of the club in reliable published sources, in the opinion of their respective authors.
Joseph Merrick August 5, 1862-April 11, 1890 Man who suffered from Proteus syndrome who gained fame by joining the circus and appearing in freak shows. 2023.06.10 21:48 ThoughtCenter87 News outlets are starting to cover the dumpster fire that was the AMA, painting Reddit in a worse light than when coverage of the blackouts first began. I hope investors see the articles so that Reddit can't spin the AMA to them as "engaging with the community".

A lot of the news articles covering this are smaller for the moment, however there are a few notable exceptions. I'll link to various news articles I believe are notable (notable as in popularity, not individual credibility) as well as quotes/snippets from each one to give an idea of how this coverage is going for Reddit (these quotes do not contain the full articles, but I have given links to the ones I discuss). In short, it isn't good. To find more articles about this, search "Reddit AMA" and filter by news.

The Verge:
In his AMA, Huffman seemed to shut the door on making amends with the apps that are closing their doors. “Some apps such as Apollo, Reddit is Fun, and Sync have decided this pricing doesn’t work for their businesses and will close before pricing goes into effect,” Huffman said. “For the other apps, we will continue talking. We acknowledge that the timeline we gave was tight; we are happy to engage with folks who want to work with us.”
Based on what I’ve heard, that last sentence doesn’t ring entirely true. Tony Lupeski, the developer of ReddPlanet, tells The Verge that he has tried to contact Reddit three times since the initial announcement of changes but has been “ignored every time.” (Lupeski said something similar in a public reply to Huffman.) Selig says that the last time Reddit communicated with him “in any capacity” was a week ago and that Huffman had declined a request for a call (which he noted in his post about Apollo’s shutdown on Thursday).
Reddit has given some small concessions: the Blind subreddit protested the changes because they could mean that accessibility-focused apps necessary to browse the site would have to shut down, and on June 7th, Reddit said those apps would be exempt from the pricing updates. During the AMA, Huffman also committed to making the official Reddit apps “more accessible.”
But in a message to The Verge, Blind moderator MostlyBlindGamer wrote, “We are still concerned about the selection and limitations imposed on exempt third-party apps and about the financial pressure on the developers who must — to our best knowledge — effectively maintain them for free.” MostlyBlindGamer added, “I’m very disappointed that [Huffman] did not add any information to what we read on The Verge regarding accessibility, despite Reddit receiving multiple public and private requests for clarification.
The developer of RedReader, one of the apps granted an exemption, said in a post, “I think it’s very reasonable to be concerned about Reddit’s current trajectory, and nobody can know for sure how long the exemption will last.”
The AMA is now over. Huffman ended up posting 14 comments, all of which received hundreds of downvotes. (The one asking about Selig’s claim has more than 2,000 downvotes.) Other Reddit admins posted seven comments of their own that were also heavily downvoted. A stickied comment has links to all of the posts. As of this writing, the AMA has more than 17,000 comments.
During the AMA, a Redditor asked how Huffman would address concerns that Reddit has become increasingly profit-driven. “We’ll continue to be profit-driven until profits arrive,” Huffman wrote. “Unlike some of the 3P [third-party] apps, we are not profitable.”

The Verge article explains both Spez's side and the users' sides, links to the AMA and direct quotes of Spez's AMA responses. Overall, it does not paint a pretty picture of Reddit admin. At the time of me writing this it is also the 3rd most popular article on The Verge, and is clickable on The Verge's front page.

Engadget:
In a series of mostly 1-2 sentence responses to detailed, multi-part questions, Huffman acknowledged some missteps in the company’s API rollout, but largely declined to tackle thornier questions about the company’s handling of its relationship with third-party developers. In one response, he conceded that the 30-day window given to developers for the new API was a “tight timeline” and said the company was “continuing to chat with many of the developers who still want to work with us.”
But other developers soon weighed in, noting that they had never heard back from the company, despite reaching out through the channels promoted by Reddit. “I have been trying to contact Reddit over the last 3 months and have been completely ignored,” one developer wrote. “I feel completely powerless to do anything right now and I want to try and save the app I've been working on for the last 10 years.” Huffman apologized and said the company would respond.
When asked about why the company accused Christian Selig, the developer of Apollo, of threatening the company — a claim Selig denied and promptly debunked with an audio clip of a phone call with a Reddit rep — Huffman doubled down on the criticism. “His ‘joke’ is the least of our issues,” he said. “His behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different. I don’t know how we could do business with him.” (Huffman didn’t respond to a followup question from Selig asking for examples of such behavior.)
Notably, there were a number of topics Huffman didn't address, including why the company priced its API at a rate that developers say is prohibitively expensive. Huffman also didn’t address the upcoming blackout from thousands of subreddits protesting the API changes. More than 3,000 subreddits have pledged to “go dark” for two days beginning June 12th to protest the changes.
By the end of the AMA, Huffman had responded to 14 questions, while a few other executives answered a handful of their own. In perhaps the most telling sign that their answers were not well-received, every answer from the reddit team was downvoted so heavily they were almost impossible to view within the AMA thread itself. A moderator later linked all of their answers at the top of the thread. “We know answers are tough to find,” they said.

The article is short, but in my opinion, scathing and effective for our cause. It is also currently on their front page but is unfortunately buried somewhat.

TechCruch:
Reddit’s unpopular decision to revise its API pricing in a move that’s forcing third-party apps out of business has taken a weird turn. In an AMA hosted today by Reddit co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman, aka u/spez on the internet forum site, the exec doubled down on accusations against the developer behind the well-liked third-party app Apollo, which the company had previously accused of operating inefficiently and not being a good “API” user.
Selig had been among the first to highlight that Reddit’s new API pricing would effectively make it impossible to continue to operate the Apollo app. He explained that, under the new terms, it would cost him $20 million per year to do so — money the app doesn’t make. This week, Selig announced the app’s last day would be June 30, ahead of the July 1 implementation of the new API pricing.
Huffman seemingly has an ax to grind with Selig in particular, first accusing the developer of extortion, per Selig’s extensive post on the situation between himself and Reddit.
According to Selig’s interpretation of the situation, he raised the question as to why Reddit was choosing to change its API terms to put third-party apps out of business rather than just buying them out, as the company did with Alien Blue (an older Reddit client that it acquired in 2014). He said that if Apollo was costing Reddit $20 million per year, Reddit should cut him a check to put an end to the app. The remark doesn’t sound like a serious ask from his telling. In fact, he clarified on the call, “…this is mostly a joke.”
A Reddit representative on a call with Selig, however, first seemingly interpreted his comment as a “threat,” Selig said. But on the call, they cleared up the misunderstanding and the contact apologized. Selig came with receipts — he recorded the call (which is legal where he’s based in Canada).
But in a subsequent call with moderators, Huffman referred to this conversation as Selig “threatening” Reddit.
That stance hasn’t softened on Reddit’s side, Huffman made clear today.
In the AMA, one user asked Huffman to clarify, “what were you thinking with your attempt to discredit Apollo by claiming that Christian threatened and blackmailed you?”
The response was surprising. Unlike most companies, which try to soften their blows behind corporate PR speak, Huffman answered rather plainly.
“His ‘joke’ is the least of our issues,” the CEO wrote. “His behavior and communications with us has been all over the place—saying one thing to us while saying something completely different externally; recording and leaking a private phone call—to the point where I don’t know how we could do business with him.”
It’s an odd turn of events for Apollo, whose iOS-first and user-friendly design just this week saw it featured during Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference, ahead of Reddit’s API policy change that will now put it out of business.

The article mostly covers the situation with Apollo and the AMA is not the focus (although it is mentioned and linked), but it does a good job of explaining the situation with Apollo and providing context to people out of the loop on that. The article is easily findable on the front page of TechCrunch.
Those are the largest news outlets covering the situation at the moment (although like I said many smaller ones are covering this as well), I'll edit my post if I see more in the future. But overall I think this popular news coverage paints reddit admins in a pretty damn bad light and won't be good for reddit if investors see the behavior these articles mention of Spez and the feelings of users towards the site as a whole.
I know I already made a post about news articles covering the blackouts, but I decided to make this a separate post as I wanted to include quotes and felt this was important to mention, as the coverage here is far more brutal compared to the more neutral coverage of the blackouts. If more popular news outlets cover the AMA I think we might have a fighting chance of Reddit feeling media pressure to compromise, lest they lose their investors before going public.

2023.06.10 21:44 MatthewEM203 "How Do I Learn" Response - EM203

I am writing this post to share my thoughts on connectivism, a learning theory that I believe greatly aligns with the pedagogical methods displayed in EM203 “Learn 280 Characters of Less”. I ask anyone who has the opportunity to read this post, to reflect on their own learning experiences and how they have potentially changed over time. If you may wish to do so, please leave a comment with any thoughts, critiques, or just general information you have pertaining to learning theory as I always welcome active discussion and new ideas.
What is connectivism?
Connectivism is a theory first introduced to the world in 2005 by George Siemens and Stephen Downes, two theorists who believed that technology and the digital landscape are integral to the learning process. Connectivism is based on the key idea that new forms of knowledge are a result of a collection of relationships or “links” between “nodes” that make up a network. A “node” in this network refers to any object such as a book, webpage or person that can be connected to another node. Learning, therefore, consists of the student’s ability to develop and navigate these networks of information to achieve the desired results.
According to Siemens, there are 8 principles of connectivism:
  1. Learning and knowledge rests in the diversity of opinions.
  2. Learning is a process of connecting.
  3. Learning may reside in non-human appliances.
  4. Learning is more critical than knowing.
  5. Nurturing and maintaining connections are needed for continual learning.
  6. The ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill.
  7. Accurate, up-to-date knowledge is the aim of all connectivist learning.
  8. Decision-making is a learning process. What we know today might change tomorrow. While there’s a right answer now, it might be wrong tomorrow due to the constantly changing information climate.
How does connectivism differ from constructivism?
The biggest difference between the two learning styles is the significance a connectivist viewpoint places on how the internet has altered the nature of knowledge. Under a constructivist stance, knowledge is constructed by relating new information to past experiences and is an active process that humans undertake to learn. Connectivists on the other hand believe that knowledge is neither created nor controlled but is instead constantly shifting and adapting to changes in the information network. As nodes come and go, links form and disappear knowledge is changing in real-time. The internet provides a way for this knowledge to flow, adapt and be traversed.
How can online courses demonstrate a connectivist approach?
There are many methods an online course can adopt to align with the connectivism learning theory. Here are a few examples:
· Social Media
· Gamification
· Simulations
The adoption of technology that has been present in online classrooms provides a great foundation for continuing to utilize a connectivism standpoint to learning. This allows the online class to reap the benefits of connectivism such as encouraging collaboration through the sharing of differing opinions, empowering teachers, and students by allowing teachers to tailor and shape the learning environments and embracing diversity by creating a space where kids can communicate their individual opinions.
Connectivism and EM203:
Since the beginning of this course, technology has been a major focal point and has been used effectively to facilitate and aid the learning experience. The first example of this is the creation of our Twitter accounts which has allowed me to connect easily with our classmates and hear their opinions on course content. The second example is our utilization of the MyLearningSpace platform to not only encourage online discussion but, is an effective way to deliver course material in text, image, and video format. Before I began working on this assignment, I had the opportunity to sit down and have an online synchronous chat with a few classmates. It was great to hear everyone’s opinions on how technology has greatly altered the course of learning theories in the classroom and provided a great foundation for gathering information about connectivism.
What is Reddit?
Reddit is an online social news site that allows users to create accounts, join communities, post content, comment on others’ posts and vote through upvotes and downvotes. Created in 2005, the site is now host to 57 million+ unique daily visitors, 100 thousand+ active communities and over 13 billion posts and comments on pretty much any topic you can think of. Reddit can be easily accessed from any laptop, desktop, or smartphone all that is needed is an internet connection.
Why I choose Reddit to demonstrate connectivism:
Reddit, like Twitter and other social news platforms, connects users from around the world with each other in real time. New posts and comments are being made every second of every day. This means that users are connected to a network of information that is constantly updating and adapting so that the most accurate and updated information is available. I believe a quick comparison of Reddit’s features with Siemens’s 8 principles of connectivism will highlight part of why I choose Reddit as my medium of communication.
8 Principles of Connectivism Reddit
Learning and knowledge rests in the diversity of opinions. Redditors/ users are from all around the world meaning there is an excess of diverse viewpoints.
Learning is a process of connecting. Reddit facilitates online discussion allowing users to make connections about any topic.
Learning may reside in non-human appliances. Reddit’s abundance of communities forms an information network that can be easily accessed.
Learning is more critical than knowing. Reddit makes it incredibly easy to find what is unknown and make it known through its search feature.
Nurturing and maintaining connections are needed for continual learning. Reddit’s community feature allows you to stay connected to others even if they live thousands of kilometres away.
The ability to see connections between fields, ideas, and concepts is a core skill. Through the active discussion that takes place in comment sections, connections can be better understood and identified.
Accurate, up-to-date knowledge is the aim of all connectivist learning. Reddit is constantly being updated with new posts every second and can be sorted by hot topics, new posts or most upvoted.
Decision-making is a learning process. What we know today might change tomorrow. While there’s a right answer now, it might be wrong tomorrow due to the constantly changing information climate. Reddit helps facilitate this ever-changing landscape of knowledge as people are constantly sharing new ideas, critiquing old beliefs, and working together to learn and make decisions that align with current information.

I have used Reddit for everything from in-class learning assistance to helping in my day-to-day life. I, like many others, find that I can much more easily grasp more complex subjects by having a conversation and connecting with those more knowledgeable about a subject than myself. Reddit creates an environment where this is incredibly easy to do so, and I believe it does it significantly better than many alternatives. Online classes such as this one, provide an immense amount of freedom to students and puts the onus of learning on ourselves instead of the teacher. Teachers are here to provide the initial learning environment. In the case of EM203, it comes in the form of weekly lessons that become available along with discussion topics. It then requires the student to connect to networks in hopes that learning will occur automatically. Reddit, to me, is a great network in which I can use this freedom I’ve been granted to really dive deep into the topics that interest me and align with the course goals. In lesson 3 of module 1, we were asked to learn a new skill. The first place I went on my quest to learn this skill was Reddit. There I found a plethora of videos, links, and personal opinions on the topic. In my case, I choose to learn how to complete sudoku puzzles. The most helpful was a post from an avid sudoku fan who gave a rundown on the best strategies when you first begin the puzzle. Things like what you should look for and what are some examples of common patterns.
Reddit has been an incredibly valuable resource that aligns with my learning style and is consistent with what I believe the direction learning theory is taking classrooms in. Thank you for reading, if you have enjoyed this post please upvote so that it may reach a wider audience who may also wish to contribute to this discussion.

The Role of Leadership in School Transformation

Effective leadership plays a critical role in transforming schools. A leader's vision and guidance can help create a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement, ensuring that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in life. Seeley Okie is an excellent example of an education leader who has successfully transformed schools through his visionary and collaborative leadership style.
One of the primary ways that effective leadership can transform schools is through the development of a positive and collaborative school culture. A leader who is committed to building a culture of respect, trust, and inclusion can create an environment where students feel valued and supported, enabling them to thrive and achieve their full potential. Through empowering teachers, building strong relationships with parents and the broader community, and fostering a sense of shared purpose and mission, effective leaders can ensure that schools are truly transformative places.
Under Seeley Okie's leadership, many schools have enjoyed remarkable transformations. At the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School, where Okie served as principal, he led a turnaround effort that saw student achievement levels rise sharply. Through his leadership, he created a culture of high expectations for students and faculty, emphasizing the need to provide individualized support to each student. Okie's emphasis on personalized learning and instructional coherence was instrumental in raising student achievement levels and helping to close the achievement gap.
Another example of Okie's transformative leadership can be seen at the Alexander Hamilton School in Morristown, New Jersey. Here, he served as the principal and led a major renovation project that transformed the learning environment. Through his visionary leadership and community-building efforts, Okie helped create an environment that was conducive to student learning and development, resulting in significant improvements in academic achievement. By leveraging technology, providing targeted professional development, and creating a culture of innovation, Okie was able to bring positive change to the school and set it on a path of sustainable success.
In conclusion, effective leadership is essential for transforming schools and enabling students to reach their full potential. Seeley Okie is an outstanding example of an education leader who has successfully transformed schools through his visionary, collaborative, and innovative leadership style. Seeley Okie's Leadership Style and Philosophy in Education

Seeley Okie's leadership style and philosophy are built on the foundation of building strong relationships and partnerships, grounded in mutual trust and respect. He recognizes the critical role of effective leadership in transforming schools and creating a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Okie emphasizes the development of a positive and collaborative school culture, where students feel valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. He acknowledges that a leader's vision and guidance can help create such an environment, ensuring that students receive a high-quality education that prepares them for success in life.
One of Okie's primary leadership philosophies centers on the idea of personalized learning and instructional coherence. He recognizes that every student has unique needs, and a one-size-fits-all approach to education is ineffective. Therefore, he emphasizes providing individualized support to each student through empowering teachers and building strong relationships with parents and the broader community.
Okie's leadership style focuses on creating a supportive, inclusive, and focused working environment that inspires and motivates all stakeholders to contribute positively and bring meaningful transformations. Collaboration and teamwork are critical components of his leadership style, promoting proactive involvement from all teachers and staff, parents, and the students themselves.
Okie's leadership philosophies have resulted in significant transformations in many schools. For example, at the Boston Renaissance Charter Public School, student achievement levels rose sharply under Okie's leadership, as he emphasized high expectations for students and faculty. The Alexander Hamilton School in Morristown, New Jersey, a school under his leadership underwent a major renovation that improved the learning environment and resulted in significant improvements in academic achievements.

The Challenges of Implementing Schoolwide Improvements

Implementing schoolwide improvements can be a daunting task for education leaders, with various roadblocks to overcome. One of the most common roadblocks is resistance to change from teachers and staff. Implementing significant changes can lead to anxiety and uncertainty, causing some staff members to push back against these initiatives.
Another challenge is managing limited resources effectively. Many schools face financial constraints, and implementing schoolwide improvements can require significant investment in resources, such as professional development programs, new technology, and infrastructure upgrades.
Additionally, a lack of clarity in communication and planning can create confusion and increase resistance to change. Education leaders must have a clear vision of the desired outcomes of their initiatives and effectively communicate this vision to all stakeholders.
To overcome these challenges, Seeley Okie has developed various strategies for the successful implementation of schoolwide improvements. One of the most effective strategies is involving all stakeholders, including teachers, students, parents, and the broader community, in the planning process. Involving all stakeholders in the planning process creates buy-in and ownership of the initiatives, reducing resistance to change.
Okie also recognizes the importance of professional development for teachers and staff in implementing significant changes. Providing targeted professional development programs that align with the school's initiatives can help build capacity and confidence among teachers, reducing anxiety and uncertainty.
Furthermore, effective communication is essential in overcoming barriers to implementation. Okie emphasizes the need for clear and concise communication with all stakeholders, ensuring that everyone understands the vision and desired outcomes of the initiatives. He also recognizes the importance of celebrating successes, recognizing the contribution of all stakeholders in driving schoolwide improvements and building morale.

Seeley Okie's Legacy in Education

Seeley Okie has left a significant legacy in the education field, as a visionary leader who transformed schools through his innovative and collaborative leadership style. His impact on education is evidenced by the remarkable transformations in the schools under his leadership, where he emphasized building positive school cultures, empowering teachers, and fostering student-centered learning environments.
Okie's impact on education began early in his career as an elementary teacher, where he quickly distinguished himself as a dedicated, passionate, and student-centered educator. His appetite for innovation and passion for excellence earned him several leadership positions, including that of school principal and administrator.
As a principal, Okie led several schools to significant growth by building positive school cultures around high expectations, personalized learning, and instructional coherence. He recognized that every student has unique needs and emphasized providing individualized support to each student. Through his leadership, he created a culture of respect, trust, and inclusion, ensuring that students felt valued and supported.

His collaborative leadership style emphasized the need for teamwork and proactive involvement from all stakeholders, including teachers, staff, parents, and the broader community. His approach has helped build strong relationships between schools and communities, resulting in greater community involvement in education and successful school turnarounds.
Additionally, Okie's emphasis on personalized learning and instructional coherence has influenced the evolution of education. His approach recognizes that every student has unique needs and learning styles, and effective instructional delivery must cater to these needs and styles. His approach has prompted the development of innovative teaching methodologies, including blended learning, project-based learning, and personalized learning, which have improved student engagement and academic achievement.
Seeley Okie's legacy in education is significant and enduring. In conclusion, the importance of effective education leadership cannot be overstated. As demonstrated by Seeley Okie's extensive experience in schools and his success as a leader, a visionary and collaborative leadership style can transform schools, creating a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Okie's emphasis on building positive school cultures, empowering teachers, and fostering student-centered learning environments has resulted in remarkable student achievement gains and has positioned his schools for sustainable success.
Future education leaders would do well to take note of Okie's examples and adopt his leadership philosophy and style. They should focus on building strong relationships and partnerships, creating a supportive, inclusive, and focused working environment that inspires and motivates all stakeholders to contribute positively and bring meaningful transformations. They should involve all stakeholders, provide targeted professional development programs, and emphasize effective communication. They should recognize the unique needs and learning styles of every student, embrace personalized learning, and promote instructional coherence.
By emulating Okie's examples, education leaders can ensure that every student receives a high-quality education that prepares them for success in life. They can create schools that are truly transformative places, where students feel valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential. As education continues to evolve, effective leadership will remain critical to the success of schools and the future success of students.
