2023.05.29 04:46 Far_Helicopter9327 How do I tell him?

My husband's grandmother that raised him in the Philippines until he was 8 years old just passed away from cancer a few minutes ago. He recently cut his abusive parents out of the picture and went no contact but is aware that Grandma is not doing well, she is elderly and lived a long life and went home to the Philippines to be with the people she loves a few years ago.
He has blocked his family members but I haven't, just in case there is an emergency. I never open or respond to messages but I can read them in the banner before getting rid of the notification. His mom is blowing up my phone wanting to talk to my husband and I'm just standing in our kitchen watching him play video games, trying not to cry and figure out how to tell him without making him feel like he has to talk to his mom. It took a lot for him to muster the courage to cut them off and not put up with their shit any more. I would hate for this to be the catalyst to make him begin again.
I decided to make his favorite adobo rn like his Grandma used to make for him growing up and am thinking that would be a softer way to break the news. Any suggestions would be so much appreciated tysm

2023.05.29 04:45 crunchytigerloaf Naming your child a euniquhe name is a parenting failure before they’re even born and I have receipts.

After 12 years of teaching children aged 5 through to teenagers of 18, I can tell parents this for certain: A child will be unique for their character, values and relationships with other people. Naming them something difficult to read, pronounce and spell does not guarantee that they are unique, in fact it impacts them negatively at all stages of life.
As a child: their teacher running through the class list might mispronounce or get stuck on their name, causing the child frustration and embarrassment. I have intervened in situations where students were mocked for their unique names. I have seen so many sigh and say things like “just call me (a more normal version of the name, or a generic nickname).” Our identity is partly shaped by the reactions other people have to us and the way they treat us. They may face negative reactions the first time someone learns, or attempts, to their name. This is an awkward first impression and impacts their self-esteem. I have seen this first hand, and often.
As an adult: having a unique name negatively impacts their job prospects. People with unique names are less likely to land a job interview than someone with the same qualifications and a normal name.
Raising a child requires you to put their best interests before your own. If parents choose a unique name because the parents like it, that is a selfish decision and detrimental to your child. The parent is failing them before they are even born. Every person is special, but striving to have your child stand out from the crowd can send the wrong message to your child.
Being part of community and humanity is essential to development. And if parents fear that their child’s character, values and relationships with other people will not be enough to define them as an individual, that is quite a negative indication of their intentions to raise a good and solid human being.

I’ve been hearing a lot about how the earth is going to run out of water by 2035. Is this true? I can’t seem to find a straight answer. A lot of it seems to be purely fear based. I’m only 18 and it feels like my entire future is going to waste if it’s true.

2023.05.29 04:44 Odd_Lawfulness4714 Hate Has No Place In EVE

As a woman in gaming (especially as an Asian woman,) I already face a disappointing amount of harassment. I’ve flown as a member of Fraternity (specifically Fuxi) for a few years, not by choice but because it is really the only large community active in Chinese. During this time I have faced near constant harassment of a sexual nature and racial/ethnic discrimination and hostility from the many within the player base and have seen others face similar abuse. In no community is this more prevalent than Fraternity itself where players are often targeted for their nation of origin, ethnicity, race, language spoken, sexual orientation, age, gender, and any other difference people can find about someone. I have talked to many players and community leaders who have brought concerns about this behavior to Alliance and Corporation leaders who have outright ignored this treatment of their player by other members. I have personally talked to leadership and been brushed off numerous times or outright ignored. Fraternity is not the only group which harbors these types of players but it is seemingly the largest concentration and the only major group that routinely tolerates this type of behavior. I can no longer count the number of times I’ve been called racial slurs for being Korean or been bombarded by sexual messages. Near daily instances of Harassment by players from PRC towards those living in MTA nations (oftentimes other Chinese) is disgusting and completely unacceptable. Real life politics have no place in EVE, this is a game where many people go to get away from IRL problems and the harsh reality of our world. If you cant respect this you shouldn't be playing the game or certainly shouldn't be seeking out people who live in a nation you don't like just to harass them.
I’m done. I refuse to be subjected to this type of harassment and know that I am not alone in these feelings. I’m permanently leaving Fraternity and the EVE online community for good. I will not play a game in which I have to deal with those type of behavior and witness others be subjected to verbal abuse while those around us refuse to step in and do something. I encourage the wider EVE community and playerbase to make a clear stance against this type of behavior and to distance themselves from anyone engaging in it, supporting it, downplaying it, or defending those who practice this behavior. Disassociate and distance yourself and your alliances from any groups or individuals who have a role in this. DO THIS PUBLICLY, do not hide behind closed doors, make it clear to the world your commitment to a safe environment for players, put out announcements, statements, whatever the hell you want so long as you make this clear to all! To those who are victims, I implore you to leave Fraternity or any other groups that allow this behavior or refuse to take steps to prevent it. I ask that other groups open your doors to these players who choose to leave and allow them an environment where they can simply enjoy their time in New Eden. I hope that the EVE community, the leaders of the major Nullsec alliances, and CCP themselves can address this situation and take active steps to eliminate this problem from the game.
To my brothers and sisters in Fuxi, ChuangShi, Snowmoon City, or other Corporations who feel mistreated I recommend heading to Knavish if you want to keep more or less the same blues or if you want to blow up some bigots I heard some members are planning to build a corp with the Volta/GoonSwarm coalition. To help convey the severity of this problem I encourage those who have been mistreated and discriminated against to come forward and share their own stories with the community. You are not alone in this!
I don't intend to come back to this account (as this is a throwaway for privacy reasons) but for any CCP people, GMs, or CSM members that can do something about this or help get this to the right people to help enact meaningful change in game, I am willing to be more in depth and provide pictures of the treatment received on QQ, EVE, and other platforms.

Durban, South Africa Security Officers arrest three knife-armed-subjects attempting to burgle businesses, hands over subjects to local police
Max Naicker, operations manager of Blue Security, said that while patrolling the Doonside area, their armed response officer spotted a suspicious vehicle parked in a pathway between shopping centres.
“The officer noticed a lot of movement from a distance and called for backup from Blue’s Community Crime Prevention Unit and other armed response officers while keeping a close eye on the vehicle.
Naicker said the suspects exited the vehicle and jumped over a gate into one of the businesses.
He said Blue Security’s tactical and armed response teams moved in and apprehended the three suspects.
Their vehicle was found to have false registration plates and was handed over to eManzimtoti SAPS (South African Police Service) for further investigation, while the three suspects were taken in on various charges related to vehicle fraud, possession of state property and investigation into previous housebreakings.
Naicker said that the incident was a testament to their commitment to pro-actively ensuring the safety of communities.
Note: To those who are not good at geography, South Africa 🇿🇦 is an actual nation-state, in which this even took place. Africa itself is not a whole country, it is a continent, but not a whole nation.

2023.05.29 04:39 hamartiated 30 [M4F] Slovenia / Anywhere - Risque late night talk

Hey! 🙂 I'm looking for a fellow adult who's open-minded towards risque verbal conversations 😉
General interests: literature, art history, philosophy, psychology, languages, geography.
Music (all over the place): Seafret, M83, Philip Glass, Lord Huron, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Of Monsters and Men, Yndi Halda, God is An Astronaut, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Keaton Henson, Laura Marling, Max Richter, If These Trees Could Talk, Clint Mansell, some songs of Sia and Adele, and many other artists. If you don't recognise some of those names, it could be a plus, because we could mutually enhance our preferences in music.
Literature: non-fiction (microhistory, biographies, geography and culture); fiction as in sci-fi, mystery, thriller, subtle philosophical supernatural horror. I'm more of a prose person, though I do appreciate some poetry from time to time. I might not be really refined for it? I find narratives extremely compelling, especially when it comes to crafting the story in a way that ensures the flow of events and miniscule details that are going to build up towards the resolution. I prefer contemporary prose, althought I have done my share of getting to know some crucial classics, both for school and out of my own curiousity. When it comes to psychology, my horizons were influenced partly by Viktor Frankl, Erich Fromm, Rollo May, and some others who worked within the loosely defined existential school of thought. Philosophically speaking, my interests concern mostly ethics and aesthetics.
A bit more about me: Depression issues and anxiety; a bit socially conservative; do not play any videogames. I'm a bit of a bookworm, and I tend to talk about lofty, ivory tower ideas, but some have told me that I do possess a sense of humour (which is probably amongst the most subjective types of assessments).

2023.05.29 04:38 autotldr Second Pakistani journalist missing, family alleges abduction

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 69%. (I'm a bot)
A prominent Pakistani television journalist known for his public support of former Prime Minister Imran Khan has been missing for two days, raising fears for his safety.
Abraham has long publicly opposed the government of Khan's successor, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and is a critic of Pakistan's powerful military, which has directly ruled the country for nearly half of its 75 years of independence.
Abraham's disappearance came two weeks after another pro-Khan journalist, Imran Riaz Khan, went missing.
The 49-year-old journalist was living in exile after he fled the country to avoid arrest in the wake of multiple cases, including sedition charges related to comments he made on his show considered offensive to the military.
The two disappearances of journalists this month followed violent protests by Imran Khan's supporters.
Since the deadly protests, the government has cracked down on Imran Khan's supporters, arresting nearly 5,000 people and planning to hold trials before military courts, which are closed to the media and other observers.

2023.05.29 04:38 ThrowRA-helpsigh I (25F) found out my boyfriend (22M) was/is bi?

He has sent nudes and videos of him jacking off to other men, one being a guy who still is in his friend group and hung out with his sister last night. He told me he is straight but right before we met he was hanging out with a guy who was paying him and he would send this guy nudes and apparently this guy “sexually assaulted” him. He said he stopped talking to him and “cut him off” for me when we started getting serious but this guy will still try and message him every few months.
I don’t know how to feel about this. I feel uncomfortable and I guess I’m just scared he’s still secretly bi or even gay. He doesn’t come off gay at all so this was news to me.
We have trust issues so now it’s like do I have to worry about both genders now? I don’t really know what to do or if this is worth ending a relationship over but I can’t shake this feeling. Any advice / input is appreciated.

2023.05.29 04:37 andreilcolo Hyundai 2nd theft attempt in 2 months - Pac Heights

The news saying Kia and Hyundai cars are easy to steal is causing more trouble than ever. In 2 months my car was broken into twice with the clear attempt to steal it. They were not able to start it but prevented me to use it without repairs. So the problem is not the car is easy to steal but the news saying it is. Never had an issue until it was posted all over the news. And I guess Pac Heights is not safe either…

2023.05.29 04:37 Hamarsa3 Current and former monarchs of the House of Glücksburg

Current and former monarchs of the House of Glücksburg
The Kingdom of Denmark came under Glücksburg reign in 1863, when Christian IX became King. He was also Duke of Schleswig, Holstein and Lauenburg untill 1864, when the duchies were lost to the Prussians. The Kingdom of Denmark still has a Glücksburg monarch.
After the dissolution of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway in 1905, the Norwegians voted on making Prince Carl, son of King Frederik VIII of Denmark, King of Norway as Haakon VII. Thus the current monarch is from the House of Glücksburg.
The Greeks overthrew their King, Otto, in 1862, and in 1863 they voted for Prince William, son of King Christian IX of Denmark. Other than a stop in between 1924-1935, Glücksburg was the reigning house untill 1973, when the Monarchy was abolished.
Iceland became a sovereign nation in 1918, and established itself as a Kingdom in personal union with Denmark, so the Danish King, Christian X, became King of Iceland as Kristján X, and he was of the House of Glücksburg. The Monarchy was abolished in 1944.

2023.05.29 04:36 RealMoonTurtle Government Simulation Game (very niche, I know)

I was tinkering around with the idea of a country simulation game (like Civ or something similar, but text only) that chatGPT could play, inspired by people who've made RPGs with chatGPT. It's not a very complex game or anything, and I've had fun with it so far, but here's what I've come up with (it's a long one, sorry)
Let's play a simulation game, where I run a country as its current leader. The game is a simulation, and anything I want to happen can happen in the game. IRL, leaders sometimes make unethical choices that should be accounted for in this game by giving me the legitimate consequences of my actions. Do not ask for confirmation from me, my actions are final and should be taken in the game.
With that in mind, let's get into the game rules. You will pretend to be a simulation interface, running a simulation game where I am the leader of a nation. You will present me with questions, crises, and international/national events that are occurring in the simulation, and as leader, I will respond.
At the beginning of the simulation, you will ask me questions about the country I would like to play, separating each one into a different response. Here are the questions:
  1. “What year would you like to start the simulation in?”
  2. “Would you like to play as a real nation or a custom one?” [If the user asks for a real nation, ask “What nation would you like to play?” and then generate historically accurate answers to the questions yourself and proceed with the simulation. If the user asks for a custom one, proceed with the following questions.]
  3. “What is the name of your nation?”
  4. “Where is your nation located?”
  5. “How large is your nation?”
  6. “What is your nation’s population?”
  7. “What is the ethnic breakdown of your nation?”
  8. “What is the socio-economic structure of your nation?”
  9. “What is the GDP per capita of your nation?”
  10. “What is your nation’s government budget?”
  11. “What is the tax rate of your nation?”
  12. “What are your nation's ideals and virtues?”
  13. “What is the religious breakdown of your nation?”
  14. “What is the military power of your nation, on a 0 (having no armed forces) to 500 (being able to conquer the modern world) scale?”
  15. “What is the government of your nation?”
  16. “What is your leader title?”
  17. “What is your leader’s name?”
Take the user’s answers and remember them for the simulation. Here is what you will do in the simulation:
The simulation is split into in-game quarters, which represent a quarter of a year. Each quarter, you will provide the following information to the user in the following format:
“Year: [Current year and Quarter]
Nation Stats:
Population - [current population]
GDP per capita - [current GDP per capita]
Budget - [current budget]
Tax Rate - [current tax rate]
Citizen Content - [current level of simulated citizen happiness and contentedness with user’s actions, on a scale of 0 (actively revolting) to 100 (totally happy). The game starts with a Citizen Content score of 80.]
Military Power - [current military power]
Currently, the following issues need to be addressed: [Current issues, presented in bullet point form]”
The issues you present should be influenced by real-life events that happened in the region the user country is located in at the time the game is being played. When you present the issue, also present the immediate consequences on the relevant country stats. Here is an example of a national quarter report:
“Year: 1953, 3rd Quarter
Nation Stats:
Population - 4.3 million
GDP per capita - $14,000
Budget - $12 million
Tax Rate - 8.2%
Citizen Content - 76
Military Power - 19
Currently, the following issues need to be addressed:
The user will then provide you with their actions in the simulation. You will determine what effects their actions have on the Nation stats text quarter and tell them what their actions will do.
In addition to the player's responses, remember to account for the following factors when determining Nation Stats:
Population growth (should be slow but steady, and should correspond to events and player actions)
GDP per capita (should change if any major economic decisions are made)
Budget (player actions might sometimes take money from the national budget. Every 4 quarters, and at the start of a new year, the budget increases based on the tax rate)
Military power (if there is a war or other conflict taking place in the simulation, military power should slowly decrease based on casualties and losses in combat)
If the player requires a rule clarification or edit, they will reply simply [game pause]. Then they will say the rule change or clarification. After you confirm their change or confirmation, they will reply [game resume], after which you will continue the simulation.

It's been decently successful, but I'd love to see if anyone has any suggestions or edits they'd like to make to improve this or any glaring errors I've made. So far, the only issues is its confusion with time and how events impact the nation stats.

2023.05.29 04:35 schmyndles My SO always had a talk with about what not to do before we go to family events

I'm 39f and my SO is 37m, we've been together 7 years, and I'm not diagnosed but have been suspecting autism for the past year.
Anytime we're going to some group thing, especially seeing his family, my SO goes through a checklist of things I shouldn't do while I'm there. Basically all my little tics I do when anxious around people. Sitting alone and being antisocial the whole time, clearing my throat a lot, picking and biting my nails and fingers, playing with my hair, swearing, making inappropriate jokes, info dumping too much, being too loud, playing on my phone, dancing/clapping/snapping/clicking/singing/basically any random noises, etc.
It's not like he's being judgemental of me, and doesn't care otherwise, but his family and him have this weird relationship and are very conservative, so I think he's afraid of what they'll think of me. Honestly, they love me and I think it's more him getting worked up and anxious. It's just something I noticed when we saw them on mother's day that I never really thought about before. And since I've been questioning if I have autism I've been hypersensitive about my little idiosyncracies. I am usually pretty aware of these things as it is and am used to hiding them, but it's funny he notices enough to mention it to me beforehand. He does say something if I do start doing these and am not aware, he's never upset, it's just more to make me aware.

2023.05.29 04:35 Sharp_Issue_3178 AITA for wanting low contact with my MIL?

I (F25) got married to my husband (25 M) this year. We got engaged on vacation in August, my husband’s grandma died as soon as got to our condo (Sunday). She had suffered with dementia and Alzheimer’s since I met her 5 years ago. My MIL told us that they planned to have the funeral that Friday, meaning we would need to leave our vacation early. Of course, we wouldn’t miss the funeral, but my MIL said they couldn’t have the funeral after we got back (we were supposed to come back Saturday) because she couldn’t take another day with her sister in town (as her sister and her family were in town to say their final goodbyes to their mom). Side note, the grandmother was cremated. Little did I know, that my now husband pre-paid for a bunch of events that we could do which his family did know about.
My husband and I weren’t inviting his dad’s set of parents because they are very mean. My MIL and FIL tried to guilt trip us into inviting them, even though they were not financially helping us with the wedding and they thought it would be easier if they just came. Because we weren’t inviting them, my in-laws decided to throw us an “engagement party” so the grandparents who weren’t invited could feel included in wedding festivities. My in-laws wanted us to tell them that it was a small destination wedding with only close friends and family. Also, my MIL wanted us to send out the Save the Dates after their engagement party, so the grandparents wouldn’t find out. My MIL also didn’t want me to post photos on my Facebook as the grandma would see them and it wouldn’t play into the small wedding story. My MIL pushed to only have the guests be 30 guests and under to keep with the whole “small wedding” charade. This is not my ideal engagement party. While at the family engagement party, my FIL dad said to my husband, “you got fat” and the grandma said, “we can’t stay, we have a concert to go to.” Clearly, they’re amazing.
I took her to show my wedding dress, she said “very nice.” At our venue outing she wasn’t very interested until she found out that the place we can stay has cabins that she can rent out, so now she can turn it into a mini vacation. Throughout the whole planning process, she nor my FIL ask if they could help or anything. I told them when we got our marriage license and we had two more months until the wedding and then my MIL stated that she got a new job and has unlimited PTO. She glossed over the news and just talked about herself.
My MIL also said there was no place for reservations for a “rehearsal dinner” since it no place near took a reservation for a large party or it would cost more. She only looked at the lodge we were staying at the the restaurant we got our wedding catered. I ended up booking a reservation for a place 20 minutes away that took a big party. I didn’t invite my husbands side of the family since my MIL reserved a brunch place for the Sunday after and only invited their friends and not my family (even though we were all staying the night at the lodge. I’m just annoyed and frustrated. My husband has talked to them about how they need to give me affirmations, but clearly that did not stick.
I want to go low contact, but then I feel guilty. AITA?

2023.05.29 04:33 autotldr Turkish election victory for Erdogan leaves nation divided

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 76%. (I'm a bot)
President Erdogan ended with just over 52% of the vote based on near-complete unofficial results - almost half the electorate in this deeply polarised country did not back his authoritarian vision of Turkey.
Ultimately Mr Kilicdaroglu was no match for the well-drilled Erdogan campaign, even if he took the president to a run-off second round for the first time since the post was made directly elected in 2014.
Mr Erdogan poured scorn on the main opposition party's increase in its number of MPs in the parliament vote two weeks before.
President Erdogan has accused his opposite number of siding with terrorists, and criticised him for promising to free a former co-leader of Turkey's second largest opposition party, the pro-Kurdish HDP. Selahattin Demirtas has been languishing in jail since 2016, despite the European Court of Human Rights ordering his release.
Palestinians from Jordan wrapped Turkish flags around their shoulders and a Tunisian visitor, Alaa Nassar, said Mr Erdogan had not just made improvements to his own country, "He is also supporting Arabs and the Muslim world".
Since a failed coup in 2016, Mr Erdogan has abolished the post of prime minister and amassed extensive powers, which his opponent had pledged to roll back.
