‘It’s embarrassing to the kids’_ Students who owe lunch money will get only a jelly sandwich, district says

When students in Warwick, Rhode Island, line up in the cafeteria next week, they’ll have no shortage of lunch options. Do they want a chicken Parmesan melt? Hummus and fresh vegetables with tortilla crisps? Pizza? Sweet potato tater tots? A burger? Something from the deli bar? Or, in the popular all-day-breakfast category, pancakes with a cheese omelet and a side of bacon?
But for some, making a decision won’t be necessary. Starting on Monday, any student with unpaid lunch debt will be automatically given a sunflower seed butter and jelly sandwich instead of hot food, the city’s school district announced on Sunday. Officials told the Providence Journal that the policy is necessary because the district is owed tens of thousands of dollars in lunch money, on top of contending with a budget deficit in the millions.
But critics argue that since children have no control over their parents’ finances, they shouldn’t be penalized or potentially subjected to public humiliation because of their inability to pay.
“I just don’t think it’s fair to hold the kids responsible, ” Heather Vale, who has two children attending a middle school in the district, told WLNE. “I think it’s embarrassing to the kids because now everyone’s going to know why these children are receiving the lunch that they are.”
While one local restaurant owner offered $4,000 to wipe out students’ debts, her donation was rejected by school administrators. “Every idea I had got shut down, ” Angelica Penta told WJAR on Tuesday, barely concealing her frustration.
The controversy is the latest episode to draw attention to what critics have labeled “lunch shaming.” In schools nationwide, students have been branded with stamps, given unappealing cheese sandwiches, or even had their lunches thrown away after employees discovered that they were in arrears. In 2015, a Colorado cafeteria worker said that she had been red for giving free food to hungry elementary school students, one of whom had broken down in tears. Similarly, in 2016, a lunch worker in Pennsylvania quit in protest after she was forced to refuse a hot meal to a student because he couldn’t pay for it.
“As a Christian, I have an issue with this, ” Stacy Koltiska, the Pennsylvania cafeteria worker who resigned in disgust, told The Washington Post at the time. “It’s sinful and shameful is what it is.”
In Warwick, a suburb of Providence, close to 40 percent of students in pre-K through 12th grade qualified for free or reduced-price lunches in previous years. While such programs are intended to make sure that no children go hungry, students nationwide often end up incurring debt because their parents make just slightly too much to qualify for subsidized meals, experts told The Washington Post’s Heather Long last year.
In other cases, families fail to complete the necessary annual paperwork, which requires disclosing a considerable amount of personal information. Under the Trump administration, Long reported, some immigrant families have become fearful that asking for assistance could make it harder for them to achieve permanent residency status in the future.
Harried parents may also simply forget to check on their kids’ account balances. “Life gets in the way sometimes, and to penalize kids for, you know, one, two dollars to me is crazy, ” Julie Roberts, a Warwick parent, told WLNE.
States including Virginia, California and New Mexico have banned “lunch shaming” in recent years, saying it unfairly stigmatizes students growing up in poverty. In Rhode Island, legislation requiring all students to receive the same hot lunch regardless of their financial circumstances is currently pending, according to the Journal. Other communities in the state have faced similar controversies. In December, officials in Cranston, which neighbors Warwick, were widely criticized for hiring a collection agency to track down families with outstanding school lunch debt.
School administrators have said that such extreme measures are necessary due to budget shortfalls. Karen Bachus, the Warwick School Committee’s chairwoman, told the Journal that the district is owed more than $40,000 in lunch money. Other officials told WJAR and the Warwick Post that the total was actually closer to $77,000. Due to a $4 million deficit, the district has already cut back on janitorial services and is looking at eliminating a popular mentoring program that now lacks funding, the Journal also reported.
Nationwide, concerned parents and community members have taken matters into their own hands, fearing that students will be bullied when their classmates discover that they can’t afford lunch or struggle to concentrate in class because they’re hungry. In 2016, writer Ashley C. Ford inspired her Twitter followers to wipe out over $100,000 of outstanding lunch debt in Minneapolis schools. Even if a parent had the ability to pay off their balance but had neglected to do so, she told NBC’s “Today” that was no reason their child should suffer.
Earlier this month, the mother of Philando Castile, who was fatally shot by a police officer in 2016, gave a Minnesota high school $8,000 to settle roughly 100 students’ lunch debts in honor of her son. Castile was a cafeteria worker who had been known for paying for students’ lunches out of his own pocket if they were short on cash, and a crowdfunding campaign last year raised more than $178,000 to continue that legacy.
Penta, the Rhode Island restaurant owner, tried to do the same thing.
In March 2018, reports began circulating that a student in the neighboring town of West Warwick had his lunch thrown away by a cafeteria worker because he didn’t have enough money in his account. Incensed, Penta started a fundraising drive and placed donation jars by the cash registers at the restaurants that she and her husband co-own in both Warwick and West Warwick.
Administrators in West Warwick were happy to accept her donation of $4,000 and apply it to students’ accounts, Penta told WPRI. That district, which is separate from Warwick Public Schools, also announced that students would no longer be denied a hot meal based on their ability to pay.
In Warwick, things went very differently. On Sunday, Penta wrote on Facebook that she had met with district officials about paying off students’ lunch debt on two separate occasions, and tried to offer them an additional $4,000. The second time, she said, she had left in tears after they refused to accept the check. As a result, the recent news that students who couldn’t afford lunch would be getting a cold sandwich came as a blow to her.
“To me, a sunbutter and jelly sandwich is lunch shaming, because you’re basically telling all the other kids that you can’t afford lunch and you don’t have any lunch money, ” she told WPRI.
In a statement to local media, Warwick officials said that they had to turn down the money because otherwise they would have had to decide which students it should benefit.
“Each time these offers were made, Warwick Public Schools stated that the school department was not in the position to single out or identify specific students that should be selected for a reduction in their lunch debt while excluding others, ” the statement said.
Administrators also noted they had suggested that Penta should create a program to decide which students would have their lunch debt erased, and review the applications herself. For now, that’s more or less what she’s doing.
“If you need help reach out to me, ” she wrote on Facebook on Sunday, encouraging any Warwick parent who couldn’t afford school meals to contact her. “There is no need for any child to be denied a hot lunch. We never know a child’s or their family’s situation, everyone struggles at some point. ”
In the meantime, Penta’s neighbor has set up a GoFundMe page, hoping to wipe out all the debt held by students across the district and overcome administrators’ objections.
“If we can raise all the money, then they’re not choosing kids, ” Penta told the Warwick Post.

7-Year-Old Boy Killed While Being Punished For Failing To Memorize Bible Verses _ Michael Stone

Christian love: A 7-year-old boy in Wisconsin was tortured and killed while being punished for failing to memorize 13 Bible verses.
Ethan Hauschultz, a 7-year-old boy living in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, was killed aer being hit, kicked, poked, and repeatedly shoved to the ground while being forced to carry around a 44-pound log in the snow as punishment for failing to memorize Bible verses.

A 15-year-old boy and two adults have been charged in connection with the murder of 7-year-old Ethan Hauschultz in Manitowoc County. Manitowoc County Sheri Dan Hartwig said in a news release, the boy was beaten, forced to carry a 44-pound log, and was buried in the snow — all before he died…
Fox 11 News reports:
Damian Hauschultz, 15, is charged with first-degree reckless homicide and six other charges. Although age 15, in Wisconsin, juveniles charged with certain homicide counts are handled in adult court.
Damian’s father, Timothy Hauschultz, 48, is charged with felony murder and five other charges.
Tina McKeever-Hauschultz, 35, is charged with failing to prevent bodily harm, and intentionally contributing to the delinquency of a child.
Ethan was killed on April 20, 2018. However, criminal charges were not led until late last week.
In a press release Manitowoc County Sheriff Office said:
Ethan had been performing punishment ordered by Timothy which required Ethan to carry a heavy wooden log, weighing approximately two-thirds his body weight, while being monitored by Timothy’s 15-year-old son. Over the course of 1-1.5 hours, the 15-year-old hit, kicked, struck and poked Ethan numerous times. He repeatedly shoved Ethan to the ground and rolled the heavy log across Ethan’s chest. He stood on his body and head while Ethan was face-down in a puddle. He ultimately buried Ethan completely in snow. Timothy and Tina eventually transported Ethan to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
According to reports, Damian, Timothy’s 15-year-old son, explained to authorities that 7-year-old Ethan was being punished “ for not knowing 13 Bible verses to Timothy’s satisfaction.” The report notes:
The punishment was one week of carrying wood for two hours per day. Timothy picked out the logs, but Damian had to supervise the punishment for the younger children.
Action 2 News reports:
According to the criminal complaints obtained by Action 2 News, Ethan and his siblings were put in the Hauschultzes’ care in 2017. The siblings told investigators Timothy Hauschultz frequently punishes them by making them walk laps around the yard carrying heavy logs, which he picks out. The children are allowed to put down the log and take a 5-second rest after each lap. The siblings said that week they were required to carry wood every day for two hours a day for not knowing their Bible verses.
According to the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Officer, Ethan’s cause of death was “hypothermia and other blunt force injuries to the head, chest and abdomen.”
The Hauschultzes are due in Manitowoc County court for a bail hearing Monday morning.

9-year-old black girl hangs herself after classmates bullied her over friendship with white family - TheBlaze

McKenzie Adams, 9, loved playing with dolls, riding her bike, and making funny videos with her cousins, the Tuscaloosa News reported.
e outgoing Alabama fourth-grader also loved math and wanted to be a scientist, the paper added.
But a group of classmates apparently didn't like McKenzie and bullied her. McKenzie's mother, Jasmine Adams, told WIAT-TV that a white family friend drove McKenzie to school every day and that race played a factor in the bullying.
"Some of the student bullies would say to her, 'Why you riding with white people? You're black, you're ugly. You should just die," Adams told the station.
McKenzie hanged herself at home last week, the News said, adding that her grandmother found her.
"It's an emotional roller-coaster," her aunt, Atlanta TV host Eddwina Harris, noted to the paper.
McKenzie attended U.S. Jones Elementary School in Demopolis, transferring there after her mother and grandmother complained to the state Board of Education that she was being bullied at her elementary school in Linden, Harris added to the News.
Adams told WIAT that McKenzie informed her teachers and her assistant principal a number of times that she was being bullied.
"She told me that this one particular child was writing her nasty notes in class. It was just things you wouldn't think a 9-year-old should know," the tearful mother recounted to the station. "And my baby to tell me some of the things they had said to her, I was like,
'Where are they learning this from?'"
Adams added to WIAT that the school system let her daughter and her family down.
"I just felt that our trust was in them that they would do the right thing," she said. "And it feels like to me it wasn't it wasn't done."
Alex Brasswell, the City Schools attorney, told the station the case is under investigation.
"We are working fully with the Demopolis and Linden police department," Brasswell said. "they are doing a joint investigation of these allegations. We are cooperating fully and I can't comment on any of the aspects of the investigation until they conclude it."
McKenzie's funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at her elementary school in Demopolis, WIAT said.
Harris noted to the News that she wants to use her platform to spread an anti-bullying message to prevent other families from experiencing the same tragedy.
"God has blessed me to help others with my platform, and now it's time to help," Harris told the News. "ere are so many voiceless kids. God is opening great doors for justice for my niece."

11-Year-Old Commits Suicide After Being Bullied Over His Weight _ News One

Phillip Spruill Jr. was only 11 years old when he committed suicide a week ago today. After being bullied for months at Benjamin B. Comegys Elementary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the fifth grader took his own life.
Spruill’s grandmother, Linda Lash-Smith spoke on Sirius XM’s “The Clay Cane Show” about how her grandson was treated, “He was a very sensitive little boy. He loved to laugh. He loved to play. He wanted to make friends with everybody he saw. He was a very kind little boy.”
She continued, “Because he was overweight, children made fun of him… he was very sensitive on the inside. Those comments would really hurt him. He would try and not show the kids he was bothered but he would come to his mom, dad and to me and cry…. They were also making fun of his next youngest brother who was six, in 2 weeks he’ll be 7, calling him gay because he likes to dance and twirl around. They would make hurtful comments on the school bus and school saying, ‘Here comes fatty and faggot.'”
Lash-Smith added, “Those comments cut him deep” and “I wish he wouldn’t have been failed by the system.” Listen to the clip below:
Lash-Smith also explained she and her family tried to stop the bullying but the school did not do enough. Between September and March he was suspended 15 times for interacting in fights. “That should have been alarms, red flags,” the grandmother said. “Everything going o that this little boy needs help. … it shouldn’t have been put o.” The 11-year-old also struggled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and was labeled a “troublemaker” because of the fights, which his grandmother said was to defend himself.
Lash-Smith also said on Friday, April 5, Phillip was trying to get the attention of the support staff at the school, however, the staff member was dealing with someone else. He was told he had to wait but he was afraid of missing the school bus because his little brother would have been on the bus alone. Phillip went home and took his life. Lash-Smith said the little brother is heartbroken and told his father, “My protector is gone.”
State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta said the chair of the Black Caucus in the Pennsylvania House has introduced legislation to get anti-bullying into the curriculum. Kenyatta also said if you or someone you know is being bullied “get connected with an antibullying organization as soon as possible… and reach out to your school districts and ask, ‘What is your policy around bullying? Is it included in your curriculum?'”
Kenyatta also discussed the needed for a “cultural shift” about weight and gender expression, “The fact that someone sees dancing as a negative thing, that speaks to the culture and the messages that they are hearing with loved ones. So we also have to talk a look at the message we are sending to our kids.”
