2008.03.26 12:33 Geopolitics: Getting the Big Picture
Geopolitics is focused on the relationship between politics and territory. Through geopolitics we attempt to analyze and predict the actions and decisions of nations, or other forms of political power, by means of their geographical characteristics and location in the world. In a broader sense, geopolitics studies the general relations between countries on a global scale. Here we analyze local events in terms of the bigger, global picture.

2023.06.08 20:32 fidessa16 meaning of a callback interview (big law pre-OCI)
I submitted an application to a big law SA program and received an email inviting me for a 2 hour long “callback interview.” I didn’t have a screener or anything, or is the callback interview the screener? - First gen KJD student that does not understand any job app terminology lol, especially when it comes to big law and pre-OCI.

2023.06.08 20:32 bennetjustin96 What games have a world map or country flag in their character/stage select screen?
I love fighting games that show where a fighter is from or show where a stage is located by a visual on a world map or just a picture of a flag from the area its from. I loved this idea ever since I saw it in street fighter 2. Besides street fighter, do any other fighting games show a world map or at least a flag of the country that the fighter is from? thx.

Daddy type looking for a local creative and kinky young woman. I enjoy gentle & rough play, spanking, roleplay, trying new things and dirty talk. I tend to prefer trim petite types. Height isn't an issue so don't be shy long and tall ladies
I have a variety of creative pursuits and enjoy music, games, movies... I'm 420 friendly, drink a little, and the pool at my place is open for the summer. I'm 5'8", thick, hung, and have long dark hair and eyes. I have a few pics on my profile and will add more;)

2023.06.08 20:32 randomnate LTR is reminding me of how much fun it is when most Magic cards have evocative flavor text that isn't just a joke
The increase in mechanical complexity and sheer wordcount of rules text on Magic cards over time has naturally crowded out the number of cards that have room for flavor text. I haven't run the numbers, but my sense following the game over time is that the further back you go, the more cards have flavor text.
But its not just that flavor text is rarer than ever, the flavor text we do get is often given over to jokes. It seems like in most sets there are Story Spotlight cards, which are small in number and focused on getting across the key events in the set, and then a high percentage of the rest of the flavor text will be pretty humorous in tone (and often sort of modern-sounding in vocabulary and cadence). There just aren't a lot of cards in modern Magic sets that make room for flavor text that isn't trying to be funny or summarize a key event in the story, but instead is just a cool and evocative quote.
LTR feels like a huge throwback on that front, and personally I love it. So many cards have flavor text, and because its all lifted straight from Tolkien, its all well-written and almost none of it is jokey or modern-sounding. Of course there's still some room for humor in there, mainly with the Hobbits but also fun in-jokes via mechanics like Shadowfax literally "showing the meaning of haste", but this isn't basically treating the lore as an excuse for a bunch of Marvel-esque bathos the way some other recent sets have.
Nor is it one big "story spotlight" all about recapping what happened.
Instead, it's just banger quote after banger quote that are earnest, evocative and compelling, that get across the feel of the world and the nature of the characters. It takes me back to being a kid when reading the flavor text on Magic cards was a real part of the fun and appeal and helped immerse me in the fiction and lore.
Obviously having Tolkien to effectively write all your flavor text is an advantage no other Magic set can ever have, but I hope going forward they look at this set as a bit of a model for how you can make a modern day MtG set that makes room for flavor text that goes beyond jokes and story spotlights.

2023.06.08 20:32 Emptysoulshithead I want to leave
That s it. I feel like a burden on everyone around me. I feel like a burden since my childhood. Everything about me is a hustle. And with all that, i ended up being a big piece of failure. The problem is i cant see myself improving. I feel life is too hard for me and that i literally literally cant continue. Amd this makes me even more guilty. I feel i cant strive, i cant be a support to anyone, and i cant be the person they invested in me to be. I m scared of life, i also cant see a point in anything, and i m feeling EXHAUSTION, that has not left me for the past 4 years. Getting groceries is tiring for me i cant . I really really want to leave this game. I know there are people out there made for this challenge, good for them, i see no point in it, and i dont see myself able to play.

2023.06.08 20:32 Quavers809 I'm getting bits as followers and it's pissing me off
Every single social media site has bots and advertisements and whatever awful PREVENTABLE thing these companies have going in background.
Whatever the hell is going on with Reddit and lot of these social media sites needs to stop!! I'm tired of having to watch these changes go on with shit I didn't ask for. Instagram changes their algorithms focusing on tiktoks than pictures and their rampant bots; Twitter being ran by Elon; discord doing whatever tf with our usernames; and the rest of them
None of this is fun anymore, none of this wants to make me stay. All it affects me as a artist immensely. I'm disgusted by all this.
Edit: *BOTS AS FOLLOWERS AUTOCORRECT IS THE WORST OMG

2023.06.08 20:32 Healthy-Swimmer-129 People who have travelled with a baby and had a great time - where did you go?
It's early days but I'm due late Jan 2024, and my husband and I are both going to take 6 months maternity leave, overlapping for 3/4 months together. We would love to do a trip together as a family (travel is a big part of our life) for about a month when the baby is past a few months old (and if all goes well health wise, sleeping etc - we're not masochists) but still a baby, so can't crawl/run away from us, and easy enough to carry around and feed. Ideally we'd like to do a trip that feels a bit more adventurous and has a discovery element to it (so not the UK, US, or Europe), and also someplace where babies/kids are welcome in most spaces. I love a bit of positive (and sometimes negative!) culture shock and would love to experience motherhood/parenthood outside my own context and assumptions.
I've looked up some people's blogs on 'postpartum travel' and have seen that people have recommended Bali and Sri Lanka, which both sound pretty magic, but I'd love to also be inspired by other recommendations. We have no delusions of travelling at the pace of our pre-baby lives, and are instead thinking we'd pick three locations and stay at each for about about a week/10 days and just get to know our surrounds in a chill way so as to not wear ourselves or our little one out.
Thanks for any stories!

She can’t remember what year it was. I’m including the picture with hopes someone can tell me what year it is so I can find better pics online of the same car. 2023.06.08 20:32 eliseeium Is it okay to get the steri strips wet?
I just showered after waiting 24 hours (and taking the bandage off), and I was wondering if it was okay to get the steri strips wet? They got pretty soaked, but I patted them dry after my shower. I also put a big, waterproof bandage on it afterwards.
Thanks! 🖤

2023.06.08 20:32 mrs-fox I have to fix my taxes and I'm so not feeling it
What the title says. I messed up my taxes this year and the IRS sent me letters asking for additional information to fix the issue. I have been telling myself for a week and a half "tomorrow I'm going to call and get the paperwork together".
All I've been able to do for the past week has been tracking my weight loss, looking in the mirror, trying on old clothes that fit again or need to get donated. Literally obsessed with one thing and if I'm not doing that stuff I'm doom scrolling.
How do you get yourself to accomplish the one super big thing that'll have consequences if you don't do it???

2023.06.08 20:32 Nasha210 Are we chasing windmills? Do the hedges short positions even exist anymore?
Before you downvote me to oblivion, hear me out. This post got deleted from the other sub in minutes. Do we have any proof that the hedge funds have been paying fees and sitting on their shorts for the last 2 years? Or have they gotten out while we are sitting around waiting for this stock to go parabolic and for them to go to jail?
Maybe, just maybe, RC and Cede and Co and Pulte are all just fucking with us. I know GameStop is a solid company with strong fundamentals. But we all know stock prices aren’t based on fundamentals, just on sentiments and movement by the big hedge funds.
My ass is still sore from following RC into Bed Bath and Beyond. Then without so much as a cryptic tweet he bailed on us. Left us holding the bag. That is how they keep getting richer and richer. I wonder if he is giving us a hint this time… not for long.
Half my savings are in GME, I guess if I was a billionaire like them I’d be pumping and ready to be dumping like them too.

2023.06.08 20:31 iriskitt I became the president of a really messed up, small, employee-run grocers union by chance. Contract bargaining is approaching. I have no experience. Need help!
PLEASE HELP- I know the following is long, but if you have the time and any experience that can help, SOLIDARITY NEEDED!
I am a minimum wage deli employee and a struggling parent living paycheck to paycheck in rural California, where I moved after covid wrecked my life as I knew it. In April, I became the president of our union.
Our union board consists of 3 positions: President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. Myself and the Sec-Treas ran unopposed at the same time as a result of the past President quitting the company and resigning, and the Sec-Treas stepping down in turn. When we ran, it was with idealistic hopes, and zero knowledge of the can of worms we were opening.
"The Union" serves only the chain of small grocery stores that I work for- which I'll call "The Company".
The Company has made their business model on grocery stores in small, rural areas where job options are limited. Employees end up accepting extremely low wages and poor working conditions in exchange for a job close to their homes.
In the 70s and 80s, more store chains were a part of the union, but they went out of business, leaving only The Company included in the union. My understanding was during those prior decades before unions were gutted by federal legislation, it was a pretty good union.
Over time, The Company has found ways to largely control the union.
Unhappy employees with terrible work conditions and pay have formed a terrible impression of the union- the general belief is the union is "fake" or a joke and just something to take money from their checks. So, participation is low and they struggle to fill Union Rep and Board positions.
As a result The Company is actively involved in recruiting reps/board members, and recruiting these loyal employees willing to go the extra mile has seemingly worked out in their favor. It seems like the past board members have not held ground, and have ceded valuable rights to company pressure.
Past bargain negotiations have only handed things away to The Company. Benefits that I know have been taken away in recent contract negotiations include PTO for part-timers, and bonuses for non-management employees (store and department managers still receive profit-based bonuses). We have no record and no idea of what these things may have been ceded in exchange for.
At this point, all that union due are being spent on are Christmas parties, 3 $100 "Employee-appreciation lunches", and monthly "birthday parties" of $35/store with cookies or cakes for all employees. This is IF the union rep has been able to make these things happen. We strongly feel these are all things the company should be paying for, but the union has done it historically and the parties are apparently super popular in the stores that actually have them.
When we took on this huge responsibility, it was in hopes we could make some noticeable change that will benefit our deeply struggling coworkers.
However, since taking over I have found myself in a bureaucratic nightmare- issues with the bank, unpaid invoices, messy accounting, an unreconciled bank account, and the like. I do have a history as a bookkeeper, so it's doable, but nightmarishly time consuming and not at all in line with the main goal of negotiating a more favorable contract.
Updated Contract is due 7/31/23, rapidly approaching. Our meeting with The Company (the owners) is June 15.
Per the 1975 union constitution, the President holds the sole bargaining power with the employer.
We have held a meeting with the union reps, and gathered their feedback on things they'd like to see change.
Unilateral feedback is that NONE of the 14 stores has a sufficient breakroom (all have been jerry-rigged from closets, rafter storage, warehouse, or safe room, lacking AC, privacy, on-camera, in customer area, no filtered water-dispenser, etc. etc). Not sure if this is an issue for contract negotiation, or some other route?
The contact items we are looking to improve are,
(1) Safety- currently all that's in this section is that safety rules be posted and the store have ONE first-aid kit always accessible. Mind you, these are big grocery stores with many departments- not always reasonable to run across the store to a first aid kit when an employee is bleeding. At our store alone there have been repeated, repeated injuries from many of the same hazards that have gone unaddressed. Currently there is a company policy that store managers must complete a monthly safety check and keep these noted in a binder (I've been told this is also state law, but have been unable to find this info). We want to add this process to our contract, including requirements to address these hazards, so we have some leverage when the manager fails to do so.
(2) 15 minute breaks. We are currently only allotted 10 minute breaks, and this is way too short for cashiers to go to the bathroom and also rest. Many California grocery stores have 15 minute breaks so we think this should be reasonable.
(3) Clock-in/Out grace periods. This has been an issue for our employees, and there have been incidents where the company has chosen to terminate employments for being <5min late- only in certain incidences where they wanted to fire the employee anyway and needed a reason. Other employees consistently get away with it.
(4) Bonuses for non-management- this is something we lost, and it would be amazing to get back but feels like such a huge item that was given away, and it seems almost impossible they'll ever give back. Any advice for trying for this one would be extremely welcome.
Wage negotiation is a separate event which will happen in August.
We have ideas for what we want, but have been told the owners we will be meeting with will come prepared with the lawyer-prepared contract they want, try to take everything they can, intimidate, and cede nothing.
I have zero experience with bargaining, and am not sure even what format my proposed changes should be in.
I was willing to spend emergency funds on contract advise, so I reached out to three law firms for advice, but received no response.
I am massively in need of help, any info or advice would be deeply appreciated.

2023.06.08 20:31 Korvar R/StrictlyComeDancing will go dark on the 12 of June for 48 hours.
As you may be aware, Reddit is going to be changing the way its API - Application Programming Interface, a.k.a the method third party apps communicate with Reddit - works, meaning that a lot of apps, especially mobile apps, will either have to pay enormous amounts of money or shut down. This includes things like Apollo, RIF Is Fun, Narwhal, BaconReader, Reddit for the Blid, and more.
I posted all this information in the
recent poll, and with over 83% of votes in favour, this subreddit will be going dark on the 12th of June for 48 hours. That means it will be going Private, nobody will be able to post or read the sub.
Thanks to everyone who voted.
I'll repeat the information for anyone who's interested below.
* [IGN: New Reddit API Pricing Strategy Could Mean Big Trouble for Popular Third-Party Apps](
https://www.ign.com/articles/new-reddit-api-pricing-strategy-could-mean-big-trouble-for-popular-third-party-apps)
* [CNBC: Reddit will charge hefty fees to the many third-party apps that access its data](

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/06/reddits-plan-to-kill-third-party-apps-sparks-widespread-protests/),
The counterpoint from reddit to these concerns can be found in a few other articles, with [this being one of them](
https://www.androidauthority.com/third-party-reddit-apps-statement-3332238/).
This is obviously bad for anyone who uses those apps. Some people rely on those third-party applications to use Reddit at all, as a lot of accessibility features are lacking in the offiical Reddit mobile app. People are also worried that this is just the start of getting rid of alternative methods of reading Reddit in general, including
old.reddit.com (my own preferred way), the Reddit Enhancement Suite, and so on.
