2023.05.15 11:00 Moisty-3000 I want to receive HF bands with limited back yard space. Do I have any decent antenna setup options?

As the title says, I want to receive HF bands, but I don't have an ideal space to set up an antenna. (I only have a receiver and may get a transceiver if this works out)
I've arbitrarily chosen the 20m band to start with, and I have the materials to construct a half-wave dipole and an air choke 1:1 balun. I am also interested in hearing ideas on how one would set up an antenna for longer wavelengths like 30, 40, 80m etc.

My situation:

I live in a small city suburb. My back yard is to the north, and the street is south of me. The north edge of my back yard has powetelecom lines running east/west over it, and is also at the base of a steep hill with another house 50-60ft up the hill. My back yard measures roughly 55x20 ft (about 17x6 m) and is widest E/W.
My front yard is about 35x30 ft (about 11x9m), also widest E/W. It has two trees in it about 80 ft tall, one close to the house and the other to the street.
The house is about 55 ft N/S, single story. Entire property is flat.
The next houses over (E/W) are only about 10 ft from mine on each side.
I suspect the best/easiest way to set up an antenna is to string it up in one of the trees in the front yard, but I'm not sure how to get one end of the antenna up there.
Throwing a rock through the branches with a string tied to it might be possible, but with the way the trees are situated I'd risk hitting my neighbor's cars or my roof. Don't want to take that chance.
I do have a small drone that I could probably use to run light fishing line up and over the trees, but I'm admittedly a bit worried about something going wrong (loop catching a branch, etc) and getting my drone stuck in the tree. Might be willing to try it if it's my only option.

My question(s):

Do I necessarily need a half-wave dipole to receive well on 20m? Should I make a half-wave end-fed instead, or something else?
If not in the trees, where? Do I have any other options? Attic might work but I'm worried about RFI. Would attic RFI would be less of a concern than RFI from the power lines?
Are compromise antennas worth considering in my case? If so, any suggestions on one to buy/build would be appreciated.

2023.03.25 18:16 ChefQuillard Starting my offroad modifications

I got permission from the wife to mod our old daily driver, a 2007 Honda CRV, but I need help. My car knowledge is limited to changing out spark plugs and starter motors.
My stock rims measure at 17x6.5 with a bolt pattern of 5x114.3. Tires measure in at 225/65R17.
First step is to get new shoes on her. I was thinking about adding a 3" lift but I'm having issues finding a local mechanic that'll take that on, so that idea's tabled for the moment. So from here I was thinking about adding wheel spacers, wider rims, and wider tires. Tell me if this will work out.
I was thinking about adding 1.5" wheel spacers. From there I'd find four rims that measure 17x8 and find some tires (was thinking about 245/65R17) and calling it a day. Would that work?
Also, I'm confused about "offset." The internet tells me that my stock rims have a positive offset of 40 - 50 (it varies from source to source). Many new rims that I've been looking at have an offset of 35. Would they work on my vehicle? Please, educate me on this. While I've looked at diagrams of the difference between negative/zero/positive offset I'm not entirely clear on it's overall impact to my project and desired outcome.

2023.02.26 03:01 SilkKheldar Wheels! (17x7 or 17x6.5?)

Hi all!
I just bought a 2021 Subaru Crosstrek, and I'm picking up winter tires/steel rims. Tires will be 225/60/R17. I'm mostly seeing rims at 17x6.5in (and 5x100 pattern). The car's info sticker specifically says 17x7, though, and I've also read that if you don't match the rims to the tires specifically, you'll wear the tires faster because the edges will rub? I don't know about all that. But I also found a chart noting that the maximum tire width for 17x6.5 rims is the 215s, not the 225s.
Any risks going with 17x6.5in rims for my 225s?

2022.12.04 05:06 020149 Winter tire rims

I’m buying winter tires for my ‘21 Hybrid Limited. Stock tires are 225/60/18 but Costco said I can get 235/65/17 with new 17in rims but advised I find rims myself. I looked around and found used 2010 RAV4 17inch rims with similar centre bore (60.1); 5x114.3 and rim 17x6.5
Is anyone able to advise if I could use these rims with the new Costco tires? Or am I missing any measurements?

2022.12.01 19:07 Intelligent-Ad1259 Will Used Winter Wheels/Tires Work on My New Vehicle

I recently sold my 2018 Hyundai Sonata and upgraded to a 2022 Ford Maverick 2.0 AWD. I had winter tires for the Sonata and the buyer didn't want to pay extra for them so I decided to keep them to either sell separate or potentially use on the Maverick or my wife's 2018 Subaru Outback. Before I go ahead and install them though, I wanted to see if anyone has a recommendation on if it'll work out.

The wheels I have are steelies 17X6.5 5-114 ET50 CB 67 and the tires are 215/55R17 Blizzak.

I believe the Maverick comes with 17x7 and the lug pattern is 5-108.
The Outback also comes with the 17x7 and the has the same 5-114.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

2022.11.29 19:39 Big_Boston_ Winter wheel + tire advice

Looking to get a winter setup for 2022 hyundai tucson hybrid
Stock wheels are 19x7.5 with 5x114.3 bolt, offset 45 and bore 67.1 base models are 17x7 I believe
Stock tires are 235/55/r19 on my model and 235/65/r17 on base model
I was thinking of 225/65/17 michelin x ice snows or continental viking contact 7's on either 17x6.5 or 17x7.5 steels (only two sizes available at the shop near me would prefer 17x7)
Does this setup sound good? Everyone in forums seems to be going with 235/65/r17 on 17x7 or 17x7.5
Tire size/ratio comparison sites put the 225/65/r17 greater than 1% difference in overall diameter. Would this be a problem?
Is it safe to go smaller and narrower for winter even though the diameter is smaller Or should I just stick with the base model size with winters on to keep diameter closer and not worry about the narrow tire gains in messy weather?
Probably over thinking this but new to buying winter setups
Thanks

2022.11.20 12:46 ultimatey90 Overheating Laptop / Thermald is not working

Hi! I'm trying to play games in my laptop but unfortunately it's heating up so bad (reaches 90C). I installed thermald as it was suggested by others and it doesn't have an effect to my laptop. It still reaches up to 90C as shown in mangohud.
What I'm expecting is that whenever it heats up so bad, it should throttle down my CPU and GPU but the freqs stay the same even at 90-92C. Also, when playing the same game in Windows, it doesn't heat up that bad it's like 5-10C lower. I've already cleaned out the fans and it's still the same.
Does anyone have an idea on minimizing this overheating in my laptop? Thanks! :DD

2022.10.27 17:52 txtrader Cheap full-size steel wheel for EUV spare?

I popped an Energy Saver 1000 miles into ownership (can’t help but feel that the car sitting for a year contributed to this) and had OnStar tow the car to the dealer for an expensive replacement that took 3 days due to limited supply of Energy Saver tires currently.
I would like to purchase a full-size steel wheel with a full-size spare to keep in my garage for future flats (I would have to get a ride to get it or have someone bring it to me, but that’s better than a $200 tow). Problem is I can’t find the actual size of the stock EUV rim.
Anyone know if it is 17x6.5 or 17x7? I see plenty of options with the same 105x5 bolt pattern on ebay. I’ll be getting an S10 jack, etc as well. Thanks!

2022.10.26 14:55 De_wasbeer Manjaro downgrade kernel

Hello there!
I have a HP chromebook x360 c14. I've happily installed manjaro in it using mrchromebox script.
I have had some severe issues getting my soundcard to work. Finally i got it working by switching to linux kernel 6.
I have however had some weird crashes so I'm looking to downgrade kernel version. However the guides on internet do not work. Ive read that I have to change the kernel version in the GRUB menu, however i have the mrchromebox boot menu (with the rabbit icon).
Does anyone know how I can downgrade my kernel ?
Thanx in advance!
