2023.06.05 03:55 PowerToTheOhana A Pickle Pete Critique, and A Big Thank You - Love the Game

Good day!
(I started this ramble as a feedback e-mail, but before finishing it found this sub-reddit where I heard the devs are active? Current game version as of writing: 1.5.4.)
A big thank you to everyone involved in developing and delivering Pickle Pete! It is easily in my top 10 most fun mobile games and I very nearly consider it a masterpiece of the genre. I've put in dozens of hours of playtime at the least.
I'll lead with critical bullet points, follow them up with elaboration and my experience, then end with praise bullet points for those that care to read it.

Opportunities for Improvement:
  1. There is no in-game method to replay the intro sequence.
  2. Each playable character should have their own, even if very short, intro animation.
  3. Intro animations / bestiary for enemies.
  4. Add more bang for more bucks.
  5. Honor those that spent gems on chests before additional rewards for cumulative openings was added.
  6. No in game text tips.
  7. Narrow preferable choices for mutations and equip-able active skill.
  8. Weapon attachments
  9. Farming the last available boss could be more rewarding.
  10. "Blessings" is an awesome system, but isn't congruent with the game thematically.
  11. Long animation delay on skill selection cards. Not an issue for new players.
  12. Add weapon trade-in vendor.
  13. Possible bug: when swapping apps and returning to Pickle Pete while playing Endless game play will continue, but pickles will refrain from dropping making points no longer acquirable until the run is terminated. Possibly intentional to reduce cheating.

I've been playing Pickle Pete over the last few weeks and it's clearly a step above most mobile games on the market now. I had completed all main campaign levels and additional game modes just before the level twelve update. This was of course followed closely by multiple other updates which kept resetting my endless rank. ::MadNotMad:: After 3 committed attempts I've broken into the top one-hundred twice and top ten once. I did all of this without purchasing anything...yet, nearly acquiring all of the bonus blessing stats, and working up to a purple SMG for a starter weapon. I still have no legendary gear...yet.
I've loved video games since my grandparents let me load up games I can't completely recall on their MS-DOS computer. I don't always have as much time as I'd like to game, but I have been mashing buttons for nearly three decades. I believe there is some overlap between what makes a game fun and what makes a game well designed. What people find fun will vary, but I see good design as a more objective truth. Even though I'm no professional it's clear to me that Pickle Pete had/has at least a rock star or two infusing good design principles.

1. First things first. The intro animation may have been added after I started playing for a bit. I can't recollect. In any event I skipped some of it. Sure I can and have viewed it on youtube, but it's still taking up space on my phone right? Can we get an in-game button to replay it?

2. Speaking of intro animations.. each character should get one! Even if just a short one that plays when acquiring one. (And maybe also a replay button.) It could highlight or hint at the different bonuses that apply at the end of their roll moves.
**Mr. Peely** \- Running, slips into a back flip, beginning of slip flip face is surprised/worried, midway through flip face is determined/smug, animation becomes a blur, lands while doing a split and swinging upward with an axe cleaving an enemy in two.
**Corny McCob** \- A yellow cylinder is rapidly spinning on two squares of butter, butter drops are being flung away at various directions, the cylinder launches away, three point hero landing, camera panning up from feet reveals a maniacal cob of corn holding a pipe bomb, glancing left and right, I don't like that look in his eyes or that blinking red light.
**Willy the Wiener** \- Is that a rapidly disassembled picnic table riddled with bullet holes flying through the air? Camera pans down to a beach front while cinders and charcoal pieces are jettisoned from a barbecue grill. Willy is tanning hides with a quickness holding dual uzis. Arms and uzis are a blur until they snap into clarity between each volley.

3. It's only fair that the enemies of the game get a little love. They're getting slaughtered out there! Something has to raise morale. Why not a little intro sequence highlighting their attack? And/or a bestiary somewhere in the menus. Descriptions with similar tone to what is found in the game Plants vs. Zombies would be fitting.

4. I find the current monetization models most prevalent, specifically in the mobile market, shameful. If I could go back in time and kill baby Hitler - I wouldn't. I'd smoke the mofo that thought it was a good idea to make Candy Crush monstrously profitable. Just kidding. Ninety-Nine dollars is a big chunk towards the latest gen console or a kick ass graphics card. Or... a pile of in game currency that shaves off some time and possibly puts you ahead of fellow gamers... I know it's just the way of things currently, but the cliche gem crates for various prices including one for ninety-nine dollars is personally a huge annoyance. It is one of the first things I look for in a game and determines along with the obvious passion that was put into the games creation that determines whether I will spend any money within it.
Money is part of what makes life unfun for many, and now more than ever it's detracting from a core reason gaming is fun. In my opinion games should be as level as a playing field as they can be outside of 'real life'. Paying to win robs fledgling gamers of skill ceiling, feelings of accomplishment, and the bragging rights that come with leveling up without swiping a credit card.
So dump the uninspired gem boxes for money or at least throw in some extra cosmetics, alternate soundtracks, or the option for players to add their own content. Something to move the needle in the other direction and show appreciation to those who help fund access and development for those that can't. The move would ideally garner more appreciation and wind up netting more money anyway. Or I might need to see an optimismoptomitrist about adjusting the shade of my glasses.

5. I haven't yet, but I will be spending some money on this game. It's too good not to. I'd like to at least craft a legendary starter weapon beforehand though. Just so I can say I did. It makes me wince a little inside knowing that if I had saved my marshmallows I would have spent enough gems on large chests by now to acquire a guaranteed legendary item. I opened three before the update was released that added the cumulative reward. Any chance a catch-up / credit can be implemented for all in the same boat?

6. I must have missed the message that explains the way the uncollected pickles and the pickle jar interacts. It took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out what the jar was all about. Could we get this and other such game tips added? Maybe incoming update teaser message as well. They could be auto-cycling fade in/out text messages in the empty space underneath the boss picture on the stage selection screen.

7. I've read some google reviews of the game suggesting that melee weapons need adjusting. I think they're just fine. They receive strong bonuses from the viking four-set. They're best used to supplement range damage as the timing of damage between melee and low fire rate range is staggered. If you want to up the difficulty of the game, try going for full melee builds. It's like a hidden difficulty slider. An active skill equip could be added to enable the player to throw their melee weapons for a duration, turning such builds into a challenging wave clearer, but a monstrous boss killer. If nothing else throw in some Lightsab...I mean... Laser Swords.
What I find simultaneously the most easily fixed and largest flaw of the game is the narrow preferable choice in mutations and equip-able active skills. Similar to my perspective concerning melee weapons this system could be viewed as a difficulty slider. I think it would instead be more fun to modify them to make them more compelling. The damage bonus to enemies on fire would be more viable if the active skill that set the enemies on screen on fire was on a shorter cooldown. Now that I'm thinking about it though this combo may be just fine if you want to build up larger health enemies first or do more damage to bosses. The cooldown and fire duration still seem kind of dissatisfying. Maybe add hidden bonuses that increase the draw rate of things like the fire mace while either or both are equipped.
The knock back skill is more underwhelming than the fire. The most viable use I can think of for this one is securing supply crates. The cd could be shortened on the skill or turn the skill into a time warping bubble that begins with a knock back. While the bubble is active increase player attack speed and damage taken, but any enemies or projectiles entering the bubble will have drastically reduced movement speed.
Maybe more diverse enemies could then be added so that occasionally what once was an optional item is near mandatory for a time. Urging players to try out new builds for success while making more items feel like they've earned their place in the game.

8. One last item modification idea. Weapon attachments! Scopes, Stocks, Barrels, Carbon Fiber Axe Handles, stuff like that to modify 'Own' weapon stats. Maybe you have to collect pieces for them from specific bosses. Late game players would have a reason to return to earlier levels and in turn see the progress they've made as they rack up way more pickles than their first time through. This would also give a bit of a push/pull mechanic to the energy system. The energy system I suspect is just there to prevent supply crate farming abuse. I've rarely run out of energy while still wanting to play which I like. All attachments could be lost upon upgrading or resetting the weapon to keep the hamster wheel spinning, make the efforts toward building them more meaningful, and delay the realization of weapons full capabilities.

9. The above change would make farming the last available boss more rewarding as well. The latest boss being the most difficult to kill and dropping the latest released weapons attachments would give successive runs more meaning.

10. Another change that I feel should be done quickly is 86ing the blessing system. Not entirely. It is a win-win addition that makes watching nearly pointless ads more satisfying. But it just doesn't mesh with the Pickle Pete theme. Idea: 'Condiments' may not make sense for all of the characters, but thinking 'Hot Sauce' for the +25% damage boost. Visual effects for each can be added to the character to cement the system in the player's mind. "Aww crap my character isn't throwing off glitter sparks. I forgot to grab the the gold gain bonus."

11. This change suggestion is more for experienced players that have earned their stripes. When doing long endless runs especially the animation delay after picking skill cards is slightly annoying. It's not major, but I wanna go fast! Make this delay toggleable after the player has cleared all the extra game mode levels or killed the final available boss or meeting both requirements. Let's gooooo!

12. A change that would be good for players of all experience levels would be a weapon trader. Maybe you can set up a trade-in shop preference before level select. Should you find the merc vendor in a level you can trade one of your currently equipped weapons for an equal grade preferred weapon. Even if at an additional cost...gotta make pickles somehow.

13. Possible bug: when swapping apps and returning to Pickle Pete while playing Endless game play will continue, but pickles will refrain from dropping making points no longer acquirable until the run is terminated. Possibly intentional to reduce cheating.

Things that make you go 'Awesome!':

2023.06.05 03:35 Super6One Clean-installing Windows on G14 2023 led to improved performance, thermals and battery life. Here's what I did.

I recently purchased the G14 2023 with the 4080. Right out of the box, before even turning it on, I increased the RAM capacity to 32gb (added a 16 GB stick in the empty slot). Since then, I replaced the old 1TB NVME SSD with a 2TB SK Hynix Platinum P41 NVME SSD.
  1. Save all your files or back them up (documents, save files, etc.)
  2. Download and save the MediaTek Wifi driver. Go To Device Manager to see the specific model that you have. This you should download and save to a USB flash drive.
  3. I read in previous posts that you should back up the folder containing the color calibration for your monitor. I didn't do any of this. I don't think I need them. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong). Since I'm replacing the old NVME drive, I will still have access to this via an external mount in case I need to access any of the files.
  4. Use the Media Creation Tool creator to make a bootable USB drive
  5. Once all the pre-work up as been done, go ahead and open up the laptop. Just remember when you're unscrewing the bottom panel, one of the corner screws in the 2023 is not going to come out all the way as it is a captive screw. There are plenty of videos on how to upgrade this so I'm not going to delve into this.
  6. Once the SSD has been changed, plug your bootable drive into your laptop and start it up. Hit ESC to boot into it and install Windows 11. Keep in mind that you may need to reconnect the barrel connector for power when booting it for the first time like this.
  7. The only thing to keep in mind is that Windows 11 does require you to have an internet connection. I had a USB to ethernet jack lying around in my house, so I just used that to complete the installation process. However, if you don't, there are workarounds you can find on youtube. This is one I used in the past, I think this is still working
  8. Go ahead and complete the installation process.
Drivers and updates
  1. Once everything was installed, the first thing I did was run Windows update a few times. I let it grab whatever updates it asked for. After each restart, I ran windows update again until I got the sign saying "System Up-to-date"
  2. I headed over to AMD's website to install their utility to auto-detect and install the remaining drivers and updates. I saw there were a few AMD updates listed under the Windows update, but I wanted to run this as well to make sure I got everything. I don't know if this is 100% necessary or not, but I wanted to do it anyways.
  3. Next, I installed the GPU drivers from nVidia directly from their website
  4. Next, I went to Asus's support page to install some of the drivers listed there(namely the card reader and the touchpad driver). This is when I also installed the WiFI driver
  5. Lastly, I installed G-Helper.
I didn't install Armory Crate because I'm able to get full functionality with g helper, which is minimal and easy to use than the over-complicated Armory C te. I have full access to the backlight as well as the AniMe Matrix.
Performance
Since doing the clean install, I was surprised to see there were performance improvements that you can see on the chart below:
All tests were run in Ultimate/Turb mode
Test 2023 G14 Pre-Clean Install 2023 G14 Clean Installed
Cinebench 16,661 17 349
TSE Total 7,321 7,440
GPU Score 7,670 7,784
CPU Score 5,823 5,951
Battery I feel like I'll still need to use it for longer and go through all the optimization guides from this sub. But so far, looking at my use today, I think 1 charge will last about 6 hours on Silent/Optimized mode.
Notes
-Although the G14 can accommodate PCIe gen 4 NVME drives, I would have opted for a Gen 3 drive if I didn't hav a spare Sk hynix platinum. Unless you have a specific use case scenario that would benefit from gen 4 NVME such as vid o editing or you professional crystal disk mark runner, you are unlikely to notice any difference in load times for games, programs, or Windows startup with it. Gen 3 NVME drives can be cheaper by $30-$40 compared to their gen 4 counterparts of the same brand. So just something to keep in mind when looking for a new drive. You're better off either saving that money or spending that savings towards a drive with higher capacity/reliability.
-Most guides will say to unplug the battery from the motherboard before making any internal changes. That is the smart thing to do but for some reason I couldn't get it to disconnect even some using a flat head screw driver to push it off. So I did my whole drive upgrade with the battery plugged in (with the laptop off and chargers disconnected, of course). So far, everything has been okay.
Message me if you have any questions. If there's anything I'm missing or anything you suggest I should do for myself, please let me know I'll update it here.

2023.06.05 03:27 Bloopblop497 Help with lag?

My call of duty game inconsistently lags very badly (and when it is “good” it is still not great). It also happened when I played Elden ring, though not to the same degree. I have been trying to figure out why it is lagging, and have no idea. The benchmark is showing my cpu is creating a bottleneck, and i don’t know why. I believe my cpu is good, so idk why it is causing problems. I have tried a bunch of different settings in game and have not found any that really help. You can see my computer specs in the image on the right. Any ideas y’all?
Btw I close any non-essential programs I know of (chrome, Spotify, etc) when I play via to task manager, so it shouldn’t (in theory) be that my computer is running intensive files in the background. I also connect to internet via Ethernet.

2023.06.05 01:27 BogeysNBrews 2020 Ram 1500 Lone Star (Big Horn) Budget Stock 6 Speaker Upgrade

I did this upgrade in two stages. The first was a complete swap of the existing 6 speakers. I went with Infinity Reference all-around based on recommendations online. I got the required speaker harnesses to use the existing factory connection rather than splicing wires. Here are the speakers installed:
Front Dash: Infinity Reference REF-3032CFX 3-1/2 2-way - $45/pair renewed on Amazon
Front and Rear Doors: Infinity Reference 9633IX - 6" x 9" Three-way - $100/pair on Amazon
A couple of notes about these speakers. They’re extremely bright even when you run them on the 0db mode rather than +3db. There is a switch on the tweeter to change the mode. I first installed the dash and ran it for a couple days waiting for the door speakers to arrive. Just the dash swap made the sound so much better. However, once I installed the front doors I knew instantly it was tweeter overkill. I’ll probably end up swapping the front doors for a 6x9 component driver and let the dash handle the highs. I’ll leave the 3-ways in the rear so passengers get the full range back there.
Second note is that while they sound great and you can hear them hitting some low notes, they’re not loud below the mid-range. Now that my highs were shining I needed to fill in the lows. I settled on a Skar Audio setup to keep my budget in check. I’m not looking to win car audio competitions, just fill out the low end. Here is what I ended up with:
Skar 2019-2022 Ram 1500 (5th Gen) Crew Cab Compatible Single 12" Ported Subwoofer Enclosure - $140
Skar Audio VD-12 D4 12" 800W Max Power Dual 4 Ohm Shallow Mount Car Subwoofer - $100
Skar Audio RP-800.1D Monoblock Class D MOSFET Amplifier 800W - $130
Skar Audio 4 Gauge CCA Complete Amplifier Installation Wiring Kit, SKAR4ANL-CCA - $30
So I’m $645 into this upgrade for a complete speaker overhaul and added 12” subwoofer. I think that’s pretty good for the incredible difference in sound. The box is a perfect fit under the passenger rear seat. My only gripe is the ugly white stitching of the Skar logo on the box. I used a black Sharpie to fill it in the best I could. It’s still visible if you look, but it doesn’t draw attention to itself anymore.
I’ll probably get the bug to add a 4 channel amp for the Infinitys, but it will be really easy since I installed the ANC bypass module under the driver’s seat. The module bypasses the truck’s active noise cancellation while also providing a tap point for the input and output of all of the speakers.
A few tips:
  1. Get a LOC (Line Out Converter) that also generates a remote wire signal. I first bought the PAC LOC 3.2 and I would have had to tap into the fuse box for an accessory remote wire. I returned it for 7.2.
  2. The firewall has a rubber grommet with an extra port for a wire. I had to cut the nipple off the port on the engine side and still had a hell of a time pulling 4 gauge wire through with a coat hanger. Running the power wire was the hardest part of the entire install.
  3. The fuse box lid in the engine next to the battery is a great place to screw down the amp fuse. I also used split loom for the power wire in the engine bay and it looks clean and professional.
  4. I used Posi-tap connectors for the speaker connections between the LOC and the ANC bypass harness. I got everything connected and didn’t hear any sound so double-checked these and sure enough, had to redo them. I may have used too large a size because the pin that punctures the wire kept going to the side of the wire. I had to manually puncture the wire with the pin before screwing the Posi-tap down.
Hope all of this helps somebody else. The system absolutely slams now!

2023.06.04 22:35 msahoe New laptop, low usage and high temps...pc dies

So, last october i purchased a thinkpad e15 gen 4 amd ryzen 7 5825 u i believe, i added more ram after.
Most usage i do is plugged in, having the charging capped at 70. Once in a while i let it do a full cycle.
I also have a second monitor connected to it via HDMi.
It's been 7-8 months of everyday use. Well, now it's been a week were maybe everyday my screen goes black, second monitor included and i have to force the restart pressing the power button. Sometimes happened more than once in a day, even less than an hour apart. Some of these cases i had some video playing too, but not mandatory.
With task manager i can see that cpu, ram and gpu usage it's not that high, and gpu temps stay below 70 degrees celsius on steady basis. But even on this low usage, i've been monitoring these last days the CPU temps and even tho now i'm currently running a vm, the temps are 62. But fans are at full blast, and if i start playing a video it skyrockets to 75-76 degrees celsius and ends up gettint to 80-81.
I guess the pc is shutting down from these cpu temps. I haven't repasted it yet and since it has daily usage...maybe repasting will do and it's the main cause.
But, should it be like this? I don't know, it's been 7-8 months and that this is happening already like this, while not doing intensive usage of the resources of the cpu, ram or gpu...
Drivers are updated, bios and firmware too etc. I'm running windows 10 as main OS. Also hardware seems ok after some tests...
Is it normal something like this and has anyone been in a similar situation? Because this did not even happen on cheapeoldeworse laptops from other brands... kinda mindblowing and disheartning.

2023.06.04 21:11 _xwtk Dyson AirPods Max - V1.1 Airoha 1561M

Dyson AirPods Max - V1.1 Airoha 1561M
A very long waited review is finally here!
I have been daily driving the new Max for 4 days now, and I have a lot to say about this device. I will also compare the specs, look and feel to my Kasen AirPods Max - V1.0 Bluetrum, keep in mind that I have gotten that unit around a year ago.
Packaging
So let's start with the packaging. Dyson has sent me a non-Apple branded box, this generally helps during customs considering the price of retail Max is over 500USD, which falls under taxes (we have a no-tax until 400EUR).
The quality of the box isn't the best, in fact, my old Bluetrum Max is better, although it is the apple branded one so keep that in mind. A USB-C to Lighting cable, as well as a short instruction guide comes in the box.
Materials
Same ones as used in my old Max. The Noise Control button is less clicky on the V1.1, however pretty much else material-wise is the same.
Sound
The drivers are very nice, MILES better than V1.0 Bluetrum. However the stock EQ is just too bassy, but there is a trick! You will need an Android device, xwtk.Pods and FlyCC, both downloadable from <#1082603187845988433> , ensure to update FlyCC to the latest version. Afterwards, open xwtk.Pods and connect to the device, goto Equalizer, in the presets tab, click +EQ101, and click both Save buttons. Then goto FlyCC, connect to the device and open the Equalizer menu, a hidden preset that goes under the name Classic will show up, for those wondering, it is the factory preset EQ4 in xwtk.Pods.
If you are using an iPhone as your main device, it is recommended to turn off Headphone Accomodations, as well as turn on Spatial Audio to Fixed. This will provide you an immersive and a very good sound experience.
Noise Control
Active Noise Cancellation is better than Bluetrum Max, as well as the Transparency is much much cleaner, however it feels like the mics were not properly calibrated.
Battery
The battery on all Max reps is very good, I have charged my old Max 4 times during the year of use, although I used them only up to 2 times a week and for about 30min-1hours.
Overall
Very nice unit, a few software polishes are needed, but considering how effective TigwrBuilder is in releasing bug fixes and quality updates, I am sure that within 1-2 months, these will become much better.

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?

2023.06.04 20:17 benevida How to Troubleshoot ESXi KVM Passthrough Preventing VM Boot?

I passed through a USB 3.2 Controller. No problems. But, when I have my KVM plugged into one of the ports on the USB Controller, the VM boot does not get past the VMWare splashscreen.
Processor: AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 5955WX Motherboard: Gigabyte MC62-G40 USB Controller: Allegro Pro USB-C 8-Port PCIe Card (USB3C-8PM-E) KVM: Rextron 4 Ports 8K DisplayPort 1.4 KVM Switch With USB 3.2 Gen 1 (PAAG-E3114B) Host OS: VMWare vSphere ESXi 8.0 Update 1 Guest OS: Windows 10 Enterprise 22H2 x64 (also tried with Win11 and Linux)
The USB PCIe card I added has 4 separate controllers. I have 1 assigned to passthrough to each of 4 VMs. Other than the VM with my KVM plugged into the external USB port of the USB Controller that's passedthrough, there have been no problems. I've tried having the KVM plugged into different VMs with different OS's, (i.e. Windows 11 Enterprise, Linux) and the VM boot will not progress past the VMWare splash screen in this KVM is plugged into it, (a screenshot of the splash screen can be found here for reference).
If I unplug the KVM, then boot the VM, and then re-attach the KVM, it works fine. I get full functionality out of the KVM (keyboard, mouse, and any other USB peripherals plugged into the KVM's built in USB hubs). I've tried unplugging all of the USB peripherals from the KVM while booting, but the problem remains. This leads me to believe that the problem is specific to the hubs built internally into the KVM.
I also passthrough other PCIe devices, (video card, network card) and I passthrough USB devices explicitly (Corsair PSU, Corsair Fan Controller, USB SSD stick). I have tried not passing them through as a troubleshooting step, but it didn't help.
Windows Device Manager doesn't show any yellow bings or other obvious signs of distress, (a screenshot can be found here for reference). The chipset used on the USB controller is ASMedia, so I did some research and found out that there might be a better driver. I performed the driver update successfully, but the problem remains.
I looked through the vmware.log file of an unsuccessful boot for errors and I couldn't see anything that looks germane to this issue. If anyone wants to see the log file, you can find it here. With any luck, someone else can find something helpful. I tried comparing the file to one from a successful boot and didn't see any differences that stood out.
At this point I do not know where else to look, or what else to try.
Any suggestions?

2023.06.04 19:31 Zeta_Erathos Severe performance drop after update (6.3.4 -> 6.3.5)

Hola!
I'm hoping someone might have ideas for me, as I'm frustrated beyond belief. I run EndeavourOS with Hyprland (Wayland) on a Nvidia RTX 3070 (My system stats say it's a Ti, but I'm pretty sure that's wrong). I had previous problems with performance in certain games (notably Satisfactory and DOOM, but also a builder called Fabledom and Timberborn) which were solved by installing the lib32 mesa and vulkan drivers detailed in the solution to this post; suddenly I was hitting 144 FPS on ultra settings at 1080p -- which is all I really need to play at right now. Every game I had worked wonderfully.
Then, yesterday, I upgraded my system. Kernel went from 6.3.4 to 6.3.5, with the relevant libraries and etc updated as well. And like magic, I'm back to unable to produce even 30 FPS consistently. Satisfactory is lucky to get 27 FPS on Ultra 1080p, while DOOM runs the medium settings at ~45-55 FPS. Killing prefixes does nothing, changing Proton versions doesn't work, and moving to different rendering engines in Satisfactory makes no difference. (I've tried Vulkan, DX12 and DX11, no differences in practice. Boot screen goes to 450 FPS in DX12, but once it gets into the main menu it drops to 22 FPS and stays about there.) Fabledom can't get more than 19 FPS, while Tiomberborn stutters like mad and gets ~ 45fps.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate it. Or even if anyone else is seeing it, just so I don't feel so alone, lol. I saw that another person was having FPS hits when they moved to 6.3.4, but they had an AMD card, so I'm not sure it's related.

2023.06.04 17:08 Apoc_ellipsis Getting back into the hobby (10+ years)

So, I've been thinking about my DDR days, where I was playing somewhat seriously and I'm curious the best way to get back into the swing of things.
I've had a Red Octane Afterburner (3.0?) back from 2007 (I actually found the old receipt in gmail RIP RedOctane), which has been sitting in my garage collecting dust for the last 5 years :( , while it's 'control box' (DB9 to PS2 adapter) has sat in another box and I never seem to have had both at the same time, but I know I've got both at least
I remember setting up Stepmania way back in 2008 or so as an avenue to explore and remember using an old USB to PS2 controller adapter and playing some songs on there on my old laptop.
I've got a spare computer, some room in my office, and I'm honestly trying to figure out the best way to take what I've got and make a little homemade "Stepmania/DDR" machine from it. I want to get back into a healthy hobby.
I've looked online and I found a site DDRPad.com and they seem to have a specialized USB control box which I think might be better than a PS2 controller to usb adapter, I'd assume this would probably be a good choice to be able to keep/use my current dance pad, but I also have no clue who to trust, and DDRFreak seems to be dead lol.
So I guess my questions break down as the following.
  1. Is my dance pad still going to be usable? Do any of the sensors degrade over time of non-use and should I buy a Stepmania USB control box and just 'have it work'?
  2. When setting up a computer (A small little micro computer with a 6th gen I7 & 8 gb of ram) would it be best to go Windows for driver support? Linux? Or what would you recommend? I have an AtGames mini arcade cabinet thing that has HDMI input, so I was debating using that as a screen, and MAY want to consider loading other types of games onto it, but really it's mostly a question of 'what OS works best for Stepmania"
  3. Have songs migrated away from more casual players? I was at the awkward point in DDR where Standard songs were too easy and I was full combo'ing them, but Heavy Songs were a bit much of a challenge. (vanilla 6-8 footers?). I'm out of shape, and would definitely need to ease back into things, and I'm a little worried that the scene has gone into the advanced options (GDQ showcase level)
  4. Any sites that I should buy stuff from or avoid?
  5. Any general advice as I look to configure all this stuff? I see it looks like there's 2 major versions Stepmania 3.9 & 5.0. If I just want a generic 'DDR Machine" style that has a bunch of songs for me to get back is there anything to worry about?
Fun Fact: Here's super old video from 2009 when I had it playing Extreme 2 on ps2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSEsdk8rV_4 including said dance pad, and original control box.

Affordable planar magnetic era: LETSHUOER S12 PRO Review

Introduction

https://preview.redd.it/bntusc7rsz3b1.jpg?width=8160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ae46d32545687541fd9f2c5e8ae15155f689a8a9
The current market for "budget" IEMs (under $200 USD) is saturated with single dynamic driver earphones, where some models don't present significant differences from others. However, the implementation of affordable IEMs with planar magnetic drivers has been on the rise lately. Today, I will analyze the LETSHUOER S12 PRO, a pair of planar magnetic earphones with a modular cable and exceptional construction, available for $135 USD.
Video Review here

Reviews in spanish here

Ranking (* = star): * * * * & 1/2

Pros Cons
Premium build and accessories at a decent price Bass leaves a bit to be desired (subjective)
Top notch imaging (virtue of the planar magnetic driver) Not a master of detail
Signature between neutral and fun Heavier than average cable with uncomfortable earguides (affects comfort)
Versatile
Easy to amplify for a planar magnetic driver

Unboxing, Build & Comfort

The box is of considerable size and weight, but once opened, it is understood why its dimensions are that large. Inside, the first thing we find is a catalog of their products. Just below that, we can see the bright blue IEMs, along with 3 pairs of foam tips. Finally, at the bottom, there is a faux leather case that contains a modular* cable of very high quality for the price, 3 pairs of wide-bore silicone tips, 3 pairs of narrow-bore tips, and some paperwork such as the manual and product certification.
\modular: allows for interchangeable terminations between 2.5/3.5/4.4mm.*

If I were to see these earphones for the first time without knowing the price, I would easily say they could be worth more than $200 USD. The housing is designed with an aluminum alloy which feels very solid to the touch and has well-hidden vents that relieve pressure build up in the ear canal. The driver used in the S12 PRO is a 14.8mm single sided planar magnetic driver.
https://preview.redd.it/n99w2wlysz3b1.jpg?width=8160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=740ad5cea213acdd7aa8c787740e1bfeb774d7e3

Summary of how the driver works: This type of driver works through a thin metal diaphragm with an array of embedded "wires." On each side of the diaphragm are magnets with opposite polarities. When connected, the current passing through the wires generates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnetic fields of both magnets, creating undulating movement in the diaphragm thus producing sound.
The included modular cable is of very good quality. It is built with silver-plated monocrystalline copper and has 4 cores, each consisting of 98 strands. Its connector type is 0.78mm 2-pin with interchangeable terminations for 2.5, 3.5, and 4.4mm. One criticism I have in this regard is that the cable is heavier than average (by quite a bit, in my opinion), and it can be uncomfortable during long sessions. Also, the plastic cable earguides that go over the ears are uncomfortable, and I would have preferred if they were not included.
https://preview.redd.it/qfdscug7tz3b1.jpg?width=6120&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ff4db9244f1a1f45aea8672e816321689e2c1b3
The number of silicone and foam tips is a very positive aspect (9 pairs in total!). I mostly used my favorite ones, which are the wide-bore tips, but the foam tips feel of good quality for those who need isolation.
https://preview.redd.it/eaqxkkb8tz3b1.jpg?width=6302&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb13c4ce9f2cf0227aad153d78f164f3dfd92321
The comfort of the S12 PRO was just okay for me: as I mentioned before, the plastic guides are not of my preference and the heavy cable doesn't help that much either. However, when they are properly positioned in the outer ear, they seal decently (it's not the best seal, but it provides enough isolation), and I had to readjust them only a few times. It's worth noting that they protrude a bit, so I wouldn't recommend using them while lying down.
One small aspect I'm going to add in this case is the driving power needed for the S12 PRO. It's known that planar magnetic drivers can be difficult to amplify, but that's not the case with this LETSHUOER set. When I used them with my smartphone (directly into 3.5mm input), I only needed to increase the volume up to 50% to reach a comfortable level when listening to music.

Frequency response description

Credits: https://aftersound.squig.link/
  • Slight V-shaped signature
  • Subbass and bass above neutral
  • Mid frequencies with a more subdued character but without losing prominence
  • Treble somewhat lively but peaky and with good extension

Subjective sound description

https://preview.redd.it/psupa3ehtz3b1.jpg?width=8160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c1a0fc947d37f3f5de7be8865c2fcd8a8bf337b4
Bass
Despite what the measurements indicate, I found the a sub-bass and bass near neutral. The bass have good definition but lack impact for basshead users.
In songs like "Paris" by MOON (Hotline Miami soundtrack), the sub-bass has a strong presence, and you can feel it “deep within you” throughout the entire song as it takes the spotlight. The same happens in "Xanny" by Billie Eilish, where during the chorus, those sub-bass frequencies can be felt “down to the bones”.
On the other hand, in "Back Around" by Tiesto, I experienced what I mentioned earlier: the impact of the bass during the drop leaves me wanting 1-2dB more for EDM songs. However, this reference tuning is particularly good for other genres as we'll see next.

Mids
As someone who listens to various Heavy Metal/Rock artists and different orchestras, I consider myself familiar with the sound of string instruments. In the case of "Meet Your Maker" by In Flames, the electric guitars have a good sense of texture in each note and avoid being piercing to the ear.
Switching genres, in "Yellow" from Coldplay's concert in Buenos Aires 2017, from minute 2 to 2:56, the electric guitar accompanies the song very gently, only to reappear seconds later. In this chaotic harmony, where instruments and the lead singer's voice come together, you can clearly distinguish each individual sound. Chris Martin's voice has a natural timbre to my ears, and both female and male voices have good weight in the region.
Lastly, in "Nessun dorma!" performed by Pavarotti, the Italian's voice is out of this world. There is particularly good articulation between him and the orchestra (choristers, violins, horns, trumpets, piano, etc.).

Treble
Again, the graph shows quite pronounced peaks in the 2.5 kHz and 8 kHz regions, yet the previous song by In Flames with continuous cymbal splashes did not come across as piercing at all.
Furthermore, in classical music such as Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Mozart's "Divertimento in F Major, K. 138" performed by the Quatuor Van Kuijk, I noticed that these IEMs are not super analytical or bright. In fact, for those seeking to gather every tiny detail in their music, they may find themselves wanting a bit more from the S12 PRO.

Soundstage & Imaging
In the previously described Coldplay song "Yellow," I could perceive a sense of distance between the audience and the band. However, to my ears, the soundstage is wider than it is tall and deep. There is good distinction of distance between the sides, but not as much towards the front and back.
But here's where it gets exciting: the imaging capability is spectacular. In Avicii's "Waiting for Love," the single-sided planar magnetic driver manages to separate the different layers of the song's introduction. If I were to describe them from "top to bottom" what I hear is: first, Avicii's vocals above everything else, in the middle the rhythmic sound of the piano keys, and then below or in the background, the drums with their kicks and cymbals accompanying the song. Both instruments and vocals disappear during the build-up to the drop and are replaced by synthetic sounds. When the drop hits, these instruments reappear in the same "layers". The drums only play their cymbals while the song’s bass is carried by a synthesizer that is introduced at this moment.
This description showcases the capabilities of this type of driver, providing a precise image that allows the listener to clearly differentiate which instruments are being reproduced and effortlessly separate them from one another.

Conclusion

https://preview.redd.it/mhylyocitz3b1.jpg?width=8160&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0ef9b14755e3a1b2078208a047b16ba747954c5
Unfortunately, I cannot speak about the improvements LETSHUOER made to this IEM compared to the first S12 as I did not have the opportunity to try that model. However, based on my experience and comparing the presentations of the S12 and S12 PRO, it is evident that it was not a simple change of tuning. Adding a modular cable of even better quality than its predecessor (128 strands vs. 392 strands) and maintaining the same solid construction makes those extra $15 USD worth it. In terms of sound and some cable aspects, I had my few criticisms but there are more positive characteristics that I can highlight about these IEMs, and I must say they are a great way to enter the world of planar magnetic IEMs.

Well, last quiz was slightly embarrassing since I got one of my own questions wrong. I have already edited the quiz to fix that, I won't spoil what I did wrong since I know people like to go back and catch up on these quizzes. I don't know how I missed that error, but the good news is that none of this matters at all. Also, I should've said North America instead of America on one of the challenge questions. If you're taking the quiz from this point on (after the grades are in) take that in to account.
Since I screwed up, I'm giving everyone a +1 to their report scores. I don't know if you have a notebook filled with stickers of your previous scores, but if you do, please see that notebook updated. With the extra point, here is the average scores from the previous quizzes.
Quiz #1 Average (7.86/20)
Quiz #2 Average (8.18/20)
Quiz #3 Average (9.22/20)
I know I sort of artificially added a point due to my own stupidity, but that sort of thing happens in real classrooms. With that said, we are getting closer to the magical 50% average I wanted to achieve.
Today's categories are Discs, Central Coast Disc Golf, Flight Numbers, and of course...
The Challenge Questions, which can be about anything and are intentionally brutal and mean. Because I'm evil :)
