2023.05.29 04:57 plainlyaverage When to fire someone (AITA but for accounting)

I currently manage two grads in industry. One grad is amazing but the other not so much. I’ve read that it is pretty shitty to fire a grad in their first year of the job. The grad is currently on a PIP, and we took them on as they showed enthusiasm in the interview (we knew we were getting someone who had little to almost no technical knowledge) This particular grad had worked at Deloitte for 10 months but was let go due to exam failure.
Points - this grad does what you ask for, but lots of mistakes everywhere. Does not seem to sense check his work, I often have to rework the task from scratch as I had no idea what he’s done and easier to just do it myself. We do not have the luxury of time
The problem is it’s not a straight certain fire, the grad does work but it is exhausting, they seem disinterested
What are your experiences with firing grads? What should I do, bear with it and let them stay or fire?

I recently lost interest and stopped playing my previously favourite FPS game... So today I found this absolutely 🔥 game called Infinity Ops... I played it for like 5 hours in total... And before logging off, I just randomly decided to check the leaderboards... And voila! I'm 35th in the world or in my country, in terms of matches won... Not sure if I'm 35th in the world or in my country, but in my opinion, either way it's a great achievement...

2023.05.29 04:56 Slight_Wolf_1500 What to look for when picking a med school - advice from a rising M3

Hey guys! I've been seeing a lot of "how do I pick a school" related posts and thought I'd drop some advice, as someone who didn't know any of this stuff when picking a med school (first gen in med woohoo)
  1. Prestige - yeah it matters, it's not a nice thing to hear but thats the truth. The days of "pick whatever school you like and get a high Step 1 score" are gone. Names matter. Connections matter. This is not fun to hear but its way less fun to find that out the hard way when you're applying to residency.
  2. "But I want to do IM/Neuro/Path" - A LOT of people change their mind in med school, to the point where doing what you decided to do in Undergrad has become the exception not the rule. Do not close doors for yourself based on something that is so subject to change. And keep in mind that if you decided to do a competitive IM field (cardiology or something) down the line, name/prestige will definitely matter. Hell I would say even if you would like to land in a certain location for residency, being competitive matters - people with more competitive apps get more options.
  3. Research opportunities - goes along with name. The bigger names institutions usually have more and better developed research opportunities and more connections, better mentorship etc.
  4. NBME exams in preclinical - If you have no clue what this means - NBME is the company that makes Step 1 (and the other steps). This means that the curriculum and exams in M1 and M2 would teach you based on Step 1 material and your block exams will be Step 1 style questions. The alternative is called "in-house" curriculum and its not NBME. This is significantly worse for quality of life IMO because your schools curriculum may or may not overlap with Step 1, so you're left to prepare for that somewhat on your own while having to waste time memorizing whatever random molecule and antibody your teachers think is cool for the in house exam. Not fun.
  5. P/F - exams in preclinical are pass/fail, usually have to hit some predetermined score like 65 or 70 and you're good. I think it definitely makes the environment less competitive and helpful. Some say it reduces the pressure to prepare for Step 1, but I think the type of people getting into med school already have enough internal panic about the repercussions of failing step 1 that they will have the drive to prepare for it.
  6. Curriculum - this doesnt matter that much because the vast majority of med students sit at home and study from the same 4-5 resources on their own in preclinical. The only thing that could matter is preclinical length which many schools are cutting from 2 years to 1.5 years to increase clinical time which could be a bonus. Other than that, the best thing you can do is pick a med school with minimal mandatory bullshit. PBL/TBL/whatever sounds great in paper but usually ends up being a colossal waste of time in practice. They will take 3 hours to teach something that can be covered in a 30 minute video at 2x speed. Less intrusive curriculums allow for more flexibility in studying methods and in personal life in general.
  7. On site rotations - This means clinical years will mostly happen at the med schools hospital or on the med schools campus. This means you don't have to drive far away in clinical years which saves you time. Schools that don't have this will send you to farther away places to do rotations and that takes your time up in commuting. I've seen some bad cases where clinical sites are like over an hour away and students need to spend money on temp accommodations because the commute is undoable. Not fun to deal with I'll bet.
  8. Location - My advice is that unless it's SUPER inflictive on your quality of life (eg: you get depressed if not in the sun, area is extremely racist) this isn't super important (see exception below). Maybe I am biased but I think the factors above in relation to free time are more important than location itself.
  9. Family/Spouse/SO - exception to the above. If you have your own spouse/kids you want to remain near that will have to be prioritized over the other things in this list. Same with if you want to remain near your parents. That one's up to the individual person. I'd be wary basing school choice off a boyfriend/girlfriend, med school is hard and SO many relationships ended in the first year at my school. IMO if you're not at the point of stating relationship permanency is guaranteed, it's not worth it. Or try doing long distance. But maybe I'm biased since my marriage is long distance.
  10. Tuition/COL - Obviously this is very much up to the individual how much they want to prioritize this. I'd say up to a point its not worth penny pinching but seeing some schools with a 6-figure tuition...looking at you Illinois OOS. Also very much dependent on how much outside financial support you have coming in and all that.
  11. Vibes/get along with class - This seems to be emphasized heavily but I think its not as important as the things at the top of this list. Every class is different from the previous one, so its tough to predict this. Med school changes people anyway, nice people can turn not nice under the pressure. Unless you make a concerted effort not to, you can probably find 2-3 good friends at any school. There will be gunners and toxic people at every school, just avoid them if you don't like them.
How do I find all this information out? IMO unless you know someone personally who goes to that school, internet/reddit/SDN is your best bet. Current students are hesitant to say negative things about their school in front of the admins during those meet and greet things.

2023.05.29 04:56 judethedude2106 Going into year 2 of foundation Degree of Software Development, any advice on how I should view my options?I’ve tried to include as much info as possible

Looking for some pointers as I go into year 2 of software dev. Foundation degree. Any advice is appreciated
So I’m currently going into my second and final year of my foundation degree in software development, the units I have completed so far are:
-Programming 1: Practical Java basics in Eclipse.
-Programming 2: Learning OOP through Java, also using Eclipse.
-System Analysis and Design: Creating analysis reports on potential systems and designing software systems on paper with UML diagrams and data flow diagrams etc.
-Database Systems: Creating and manipulating SQL databases and understanding ERDs.
-Software Testing: Learning types of testing, how to test a program and record with a test log, how to use tools such as Selenium and CassiniDev with Java.
-Maths for Programming: Calculus, number systems etc.
My second year begins in September and the following points are the units I will be completing and what I know about them so far:
-Programming 3: Will be using Visual Studio to create a working program with C# with a SQL database connected to it (my teacher is saying it is technically full stack development which is good for interviews)
-Computer and Network Architecture: Not sure on the specifics of this unit.
-Web Technologies: I know this involves creating a website and I’m somewhat familiar with HTML and CSS, but yet to familiarise myself with JavaScript.
-Data Science: not sure on the specifics of this unit either.
-Work Based Learning: 5 month long placements in a local IT company. In placement 4 days a week (I don’t know what company it is yet.)
As you might be able to tell I’m still relatively new to this industry, but I’m still very passionate about it. I’ve always been into computers and regret not getting into things like programming earlier in life, but i am sure I have found the area of work I want to spend my life doing.
I’m posting to ask for advice on my options so I have a solid year in order to decide what I want I want to do. I don’t know many people in the industry so I think here would be a good place to get some pointers. To add some content I’m 19 and live in Northern Ireland, there is an abundance of reputable IT companies meaning I am likely to get placed in a good company. I particularly like what I’ve been doing in Java and SQL, expecting to enjoy C# too. I haven’t been achieving top grades, but I am getting high enough to get accepted into the best Uni in NI. My current options as I see things:
-University in NI: Unsure of which degree specifically but am leaning towards Computer Science, university here is significantly cheaper than mainland UK but my foundation degree will only allow me to pass into second year. Also unsure of whether to pursue a Masters Degree, but I’m leaning against it.
University in Great Britain: More expensive than NI but will be more likely to pass directly into third year.
Job After Placement: I am told that most students are offered full time jobs at the end of their placement at £30k, and sometimes offer apprenticeships where they will pay for me to complete my degree while I work for them. I will be locked down in this company for a few years though and I’ve been wanting to leave my city ASAP, but by no means does this mean I’m ruling this option out due to my desire to leave.
Find an Apprenticeship Elsewhere in UK: I’m not sure how plausible this is and feel it may be risky, but if possible I think I would pick this one, I would either move to the capital Belfast or go to the mainland. Potentially I could go international but I feel this would be extremely unrealistic.
Open University: I need to further look into this option, but it also sounds good, it is meant to be a 2 year, more affordable degree completed from home, but I lack complete understanding at the moment.
Wild Card, Find Work/Apprenticeship in Australia: I have family in Australia eager for me to visit them for awhile, they are very well of and this would give me time to get on my feet while out there. I would need to learn a lot more about the IT landscape out there before even considering this. I also would have to work out if it would even be possible immigration wise. This one is more of a dream but would do it if it was possible.
Thanks for reading this far, correct me if I’m incorrect about anything, any advice helps!

When taxpayers must check "Yes" The list below covers the most common transactions in virtual currency that require checking the "Yes" box:
The receipt of virtual currency as payment for goods or services provided; The receipt or transfer of virtual currency for free (without providing any consideration) that does not qualify as a bona fide gift; The receipt of new virtual currency as a result of mining and staking activities; The receipt of virtual currency as a result of a hard fork; An exchange of virtual currency for property, goods, or services; An exchange/trade of virtual currency for another virtual currency; A sale of virtual currency; and Any other disposition of a financial interest in virtual currency. If a taxpayer disposed of any virtual currency that was held as a capital asset through a sale, exchange or transfer, they must check "Yes" and use Form 8949 to figure their capital gain or loss and report it on Schedule D (Form 1040). 1. Voyager we didn't sale our crypto but the coins that weren't transferable are given as cash is that considered a sale? Do we check Yes? Lost 15,000 2. My wallet was hacked do I have to report this and check Yes? Lost 9,000 3. What the 😨 Do I do crypto has been a nightmare 4. Improvement? Added second bath. They’re tiny though. Not concerned with garage not fitting two cars, it’s not for cars to live in anyway, but I was able to squeeze out a little more room by rotating the bedroom. Added windows for you light freaks. 2023.05.29 04:55 GoodGetGorilla 5 common mistakes for beginner pickleball players to avoid

Here are five common mistakes that beginner pickleball players should try to avoid:
  1. Holding the Paddle Too Tightly: One common mistake is gripping the paddle too tightly. This can hinder wrist mobility and result in less control over shots. Beginners should focus on maintaining a relaxed grip to allow for more fluid and accurate strokes.
  2. Standing Too Far Back: Beginners often stand too far back from the non-volley zone (kitchen) line, which makes it challenging to react quickly and efficiently. It's important to move closer to the net to have better control and be ready for volleys and dinks.
  3. Overhitting the Ball: Many beginners have a tendency to hit the ball too hard, sacrificing accuracy and control. It's crucial to learn how to generate power with proper technique rather than relying solely on brute force. Focus on controlled shots that keep the ball in play.
  4. Neglecting Footwork: Proper footwork is essential in pickleball. Beginners may make the mistake of not moving their feet enough, leading to poor positioning and difficulty reaching shots. Practice footwork drills and focus on staying light on your feet to improve your court coverage.
  5. Not Communicating with Doubles Partner: Communication is key in doubles play. Beginners often forget to communicate with their partner, resulting in confusion, missed shots, and overlaps. Develop clear communication signals and establish a system for effectively communicating on the court.

2023.05.29 04:55 Edward2704 Don Jr. 2024 Montana Senate Race running against Don Jr. full mod writing (keep in mind that Don Jr. owns a ranch in Montana)

Italics = advisor feedback
  1. Congratulations Don Jr., after a contentious primary with Matt Rosendale and Greg Gianforte, you have emerged victorious in the Republican primary. What will be your opening statement as you pivot towards the general Montana senate election with Jon Tester?
  1. Due to the rural nature of Montana, the average Montanan spends more on gas than almost any other state in the country, and as gas prices continue to rise, what would you do to lower them?
  1. RNG. Your father, who is running for president from within a prison cell, has asked if you could attend one of his rallies that are being held from just outside his prison cell where he will be visible to the large crowd through the window of his prison cell in New York. Would you like to attend this rally outside the prison?
  1. Inflation continues to ravage the nation. How will you put an end to it?
  1. The destructive conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to go on. How will you put an end to it if at all?
  1. China has repeatedly made threats against Taiwan, and there have been fears that China might invade Taiwan. How will you prevent this from happening?
  1. There continue to be migrants and drugs that are flowing across the southern border. What would you do to stop this from happening?
8. Jon Tester, despite being a senator from Montana, one of the most pro-gun states in America, strongly came out in favor of gun control after the Uvalde shooting. What is your opinion on gun control?
  1. Abortion has become an increasingly important issue throughout America, how will you deal with this issue
  1. Now onto more state-centered issues. The state of Montana has an enormous amount of agriculture, farms, and ranches, and the amount they make has been decreasing. How will you plan to deal with this
  1. RNG Will you agree to debate Jon Tester?
  1. RNG You are meeting with Libertarian candidate Rick Breckenridge, to see if you can convince him to drop out and endorse you.
  1. There's no way around it. Although you own a ranch in Montana, Montana is not your state of permanent residence and many view you as a carpet bagger. How do you plan to respond?
  1. Which Montana Republican would you like to go on tour with today?
  1. News has broken out about how your girlfriend, Kimberly Gilfoyle, has been fired from Fox News for sexual harassment. How do you want to do damage control?
  1. How would you like to attack Jon Tester if at all?
  1. One interesting idea that has been proposed by many Democrats is to put abortion clinics on Native American reservations, as their lands aren’t governed by the US. Montana has some of the most native reservations in the country. What are your thoughts on this?
  1. Not to talk too much about abortion, but a new bill has been proposed in the Montana State House that would criminalize pregnant Montanans for traveling out of state or out of the country to receive an abortion elsewhere. What are your thoughts on this bill?
  1. RNG. The Montana state legislature has just passed new laws banning Tribal ID cards and requiring you to present your address to vote, which Native Americans on reservations don’t have as a way to stop Native Americans, who disproportionately vote Democrat, from voting. What are your thoughts on this?
  1. You have talked about reducing the amount of money that we spend to reduce inflation. Where would you like to make cuts in spending
  1. Jon Tester has attacked you with an attack ad of you speaking with your father and Rudi Giuliani at the Save America rally on January 6th where you tell the crowd to stand up and fight as they proceed to walk towards the capital and invade it. How will you react
  1. Montana has one of the slowest internet speeds in the country due to its rural location. Would you be willing to spend government money to increase the internet speed in Montana?
  1. Do you plan to pass more laws to engage in culture wars and ban drag story hour, and critical race theory
  1. What will be your ending message as this campaign draws to a close?
  1. Where in Montana will you spend your last days campaigning
