2023.06.10 19:09 asd8dhd The Secrets of Interstellar and Interplanetary Travel
DISCLAIMER I almost didn’t post this. Not because I think it’s too wild or doesn’t make any sense. In fact, quite the opposite. The information I present here, which is the result of countless hours spent re-watching videos, listening to audio, and cross-referencing official information, is something that now seems to me to be far too viable not to be correct. I have actually tried to prove this theory wrong and… well basically I can’t. So, please bear this in mind as you read. This could end up being one of those rare occasions when we’re actually onto something. Either way, I hope you enjoy the post. First point; this is going to be a
long post. Given the subject matter, it needs to be. Second point; I have not added any images or videos directly
into the post but have instead included a great many links embedded within the text itself. This should ensure that the post is no longer than it needs to be but should still allow you sufficient opportunity to fully scrutinize every part of my theory, so that you can determine for
yourself whether or not you think it holds weight.
I have organised all of the information under specific headings designed to make everything more accessible. Each section focuses on a particular aspect of the main theory. Even if you think that some of what you are reading may not be relevant, I can assure you that everything written here has been included as an important part of a much larger puzzle, and so I would advise that you patiently make your way through the entirety of the post. In an effort to ensure that your time invested here is appropriately rewarded, and in the spirit of preserving the scientific method, I have tried to keep flavor text and blind speculation down to an absolute minimum.
Note that I will be listing various aspects of this post as being confirmed correct or incorrect as and when we have official information to verify such facts. So here we are, after five long years of waiting, the inevitable release of
Starfield, like the event horizon of some nearby black hole, is almost upon us. With the Showcase now a mere 24 hours away, it is time for us to take a look at what makes this particular game so special, as well as discovering just how we will be given the means to fly among the stars.
And so, without further ado, let us begin.
Hitchhiker's Guide From watching gameplay footage, and also listening to various devs talk about Starfield, we know that at some along the early part of the story, we will find ourselves on board a
Constellation Starship, which is appropriately named
Frontier. With us on the ship is
VASCO, an adorable robot assistant who will eventually become one of our possible companions. But how did we even end up on this ship? Well firstly, I do not believe that Frontier is
our ship, or at least not at first. And so, we’re probably here in the capacity of a ‘guest’ of some kind, or more likely, a hitchhiker.
If we take a look at
this scene, we first hear a male shouting
“that’s the Crimson Fleet!” and then a female saying
“Everybody get ready!” After this, we can see that the group we are with is attacked. We already know that we uncover some kind of
unknown artifact whilst
mining for ore near the beginning of the Main Quest, and that the aforementioned Crimson Fleet is essentially an organised collective of space pirates. But what we don’t know is
why they attacked us. This is not something I will be diving into in this particular post, although I do have some theories about this. But the relevance of the series of events here described cannot be understated, as they seem to be the launching point for our entry into Constellation and the adventures that follow.
Next, if we look a little further, we can see that
this seemingly-important member of Constellation is not with us when we arrive at their
Headquarters on
Jemison, which suggests that he may have been killed during the above mentioned attack. Also note that, in-spite of not having a voiced protagonist this time round, we can clearly hear
somebody talking over Frontier’s comms system, which means that there must be a designated pilot. Given the fact that we don’t see anyone who is
confirmed as being the pilot (although it may actually be
this person), it is safe to assume that this designated individual was with us during the flight but was first injured in the attack on the planet’s surface and was then taken to Medical Bay after we successfully land on Jemison.
It is my belief that, after perhaps being exposed to some kind of energy pulse from a grenade or something similar, the first member of Constellation we see was outright killed (hence why we are then asked to join up ourselves, perhaps to take over his role). The pilot, however, clearly survived as we can hear him talking to Control over the comms system during what is actually an extended two-way conversation, but I think that his
vision was somehow compromised so that, even though he is able to speak, he is temporarily unable to see. The good news about this most unfortunate situation is that it opens the door for us to quickly step into the hot seat and, with the pilot acting as our guide, we will experience our very first
Starfield flight tutorial.
Radio Chatter If you listen to the beginning of both the
Official Teaser Trailer and
Official Gameplay Reveal for Starfield, you will hear both halves of the radio conversation I have referenced above, or at least the parts of it that Bethesda have given us so far. The first of these is spoken by somebody being referred to as
Control, and the second by Frontier’s pilot. I previously
posted a link to an audio I made and put up on
Soundcloud, which gives us all of the confirmed parts of this conversation carefully spliced together and enhanced for clarity. Note that some of the audio, despite these enhancements, is a little hard to make out.
The final, in-game conversation is going to be a fair bit longer than what we have here and will be based on the specific processes that are required before attempting a
Grav Jump. I don’t think we will hear this conversation every time we perform a Jump (especially given that our protagonist does not speak), but the first time we experience this early step-out moment, a detailed and appropriate pre-launch conversation will only serve to enhance what I’m sure will be an awe-inspiring experience.
Note that, at the end of this post, I have provided a link to a written transcript detailing what I think is being said in the full version of the above conversation. In the meantime, here is a breakdown of the confirmed parts of this audio. This is slightly different from the version I previously posted, due to new evidence clarifying exactly what is being said here. I have left line-spaces to help show where the missing parts of the audio will eventually go:
PILOT: "Control this is Constellation Starship Frontier." CONTROL: "Constellation Starship Frontier, we have you on scanners." PILOT: "We're ready to start on your signal." CONTROL: "Performing Road Systems check. Helium-3 tanks, check. Seals are intact." PILOT: "Maintaining Exit Vector course, Steady 'till Ready." CONTROL: "We are still go." PILOT: "Coordinates input, plotting Jump course." CONTROL: "We read you Constellation." PILOT: "Sky-Bus is converged, we're looking good." CONTROL: "Jemison route looks good." PILOT: "Allocating Auxiliary Reactor Power." CONTROL: "Prepare for departure. Graviton Loop Array Spool, check." PILOT: "System checks are green across the board." CONTROL: "Your space Lane is clear." PILOT: "Grav Jump commencing in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1." Road-Trip At first, this seems like a typical, albeit futuristic version of an Air Traffic Control conversation. After all, much of what is being said does sound very familiar, and the rest seems appropriate to Starfield’s apparent Hard Science Fiction theme. But it’s only when you start digging a little deeper that you realize that something else is going on here as well.
Note the following terms taken from the above transcript:
Road,
Exit,
Course,
Coordinates,
Bus,
Route,
Departure and
Lane. All these words share a very noticeable common theme. They are all in some way related to
Road Networks. Note also the phrase “
green across the board," which sounds like it could also be a reference to
Traffic Lights.
Zooming Along Next, let’s look at
this map, which features the home of a certain
Software Development Company you may have heard of. If you zoom out a fair bit, you will see two large Cities, namely
Washington and
Baltimore. Zoom out a little more, and you can now see the cities of
Richmond to the South and
Pittsburgh to the North-West. Zoom back in over any of these four major cities, and you will see that there are many more smaller locations within each of the city limits.
Now scroll the map over to any of the areas outside of these cities, and you will find a multitude of other important locations. These include
residential areas,
airports,
medical facilities,
sports and leisure facilities,
research facilities,
manufacturing facilities, tech companies,
supermarkets),
hotels,
places of worship, and many others. All the above locations are important in one way of another to the continued functioning of our society, and all can be placed within two distinct categories. These are
Population Centers and
Infrastructure.
You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat Now imagine that there has been some kind of
catastrophic flood in this area, and all these locations, although somehow miraculously intact, are now separated from each other as a series of individual islands in the middle of a newly formed ‘ocean’. Suddenly, the existing Road Network, along with any cars, busses, and other road vehicles, would become useless. You would need to use a completely different system, one designed to properly accommodate these changes, which would of course have to incorporate such elements as
harbors,
shipping routes, and
vehicles capable of travelling along a waterway.
Now let’s zoom out again, this time further. Much,
much, further. Each location has now been transformed into either a
planet or a
moon, spread across various star systems covering a vast region of space. Each one of these planets and moons will have its own individual features, resources, possible inhabitants, and infrastructure requirements. With such a quantum leap in terms of scale, if we
now wanted to travel between these locations, which could in many cases end up being several light years apart, we are going to need something far bigger in terms of scale, complexity, and technology.
Shown In 60 Seconds During the
first ever 60 seconds of Starfield footage we all saw, shown in the form of the
Official Announcement Teaser at the end of
BE3 on June 11th 2018 (which redditor
InToddWeTrust2023 has very nicely referenced
here), we were given some surprisingly important clues which now form the cornerstone of this theory. Not only have these clues stacked up with every consecutive trailer released, as well as many of the other official videos and various other snippets of information, but their sheer level of consistency places them well outside the realm of possible coincidence.
Some of these additional clues were given to us in the two videos referenced above which contain the comms audio. The second of these two videos, namely the
Official Gameplay Reveal, dropped, as would be expected, at the end of
last year’s Showcase on June 12th 2022. Some of the most crucial information we have been given to date regarding my theory is actually contained in the 70 seconds shown
before Todd even begins to speak. We will discuss the relevance of all of this a little further on in the post.
Lo-go/no go First, some Space related terminology. In Mission Control speak, a
Launch Status Check, also known as a
go/no go poll, is part of a very carefully designed system implemented by US Space Agencies to ensure maximum safety and the best possible survival chance of both the ship and its crew prior to launch. This, or something similar, will undoubtedly form an integral part of the pre-launch, or rather, pre-
Jump procedures incorporated into Starfield, especially given what we know in relation to its specific
influences, attention to detail, and focus on realism.
But let's look for a moment at a different type of launch. Let's look at the process of carefully managing the flow of information when you are launching a long-awaited, multi-million-dollar triple-A video game and you happen to be a major player. With the combined might of
Bethesda,
Zenimax, and now
Microsoft, there is clearly a great deal of scope in terms of how they were able to execute all of the steps involved in this process. One critically important factor, and one that has been masterfully implemented in the promotion of Starfield, is the use of familiar iconography.
If we look at the iconography seen during the promotion of Starfield, we can see that there are two main elements. These are the circular
Starfield logo, first unveiled in 2018, and of course the recently updated
Bethesda Games Studios logo, which has existed in various iterations since around 2006. Both of these share a common, simplistic yet effective design, and the BGS logo in particular is now light years ahead of its
original design as seen on box art and in promotional materials for
The Elder Scrolls VI Oblivion. At the time of Oblivion’s release, the long-term use of this particular logo, which incorporates the now familiar
Fallout Vault Door, was a little uncertain due to restrictions with the associated licence (more on this below). But once this matter had been resolved, it would make a lot of sense that they would then develop this logo into the much sharper, more modern version we see today.
Licenced to Fly Way back in April of 2007, Bethesda realized one of their biggest long-term business goals by finally securing the
full rights to the highly acclaimed Fallout series. Prior to this, in 2004, they had been granted limited rights which would allow them to develop
Fallout 3 and then two additional games, but they clearly wanted
full and unrestricted access to the franchise and all of its assets. Since this time, in addition to Fallout 3, we have seen the release of
Fallout New Vegas,
Fallout 4, and
Fallout 76, as well as a number of smaller projects, including
Fallout Shelter. This is all the proof you need to confirm the fact that, in-spite of some initial setbacks, Bethesda’s insistence on going the extra mile with regards to securing the full franchise, was most definitely worth it, and was seen by many as a landmark achievement.
Looking at the most recent entry to this ever-expanding series, namely Fallout 76, I would like to draw your attention to two of this particular game’s trailers. First, we have the
Fallout 76 Official Trailer from 2018, and then
The Pitt Story Trailer from 2022. In the first of these two trailers, at around the
35 second mark, we see the new BGS logo once again, and then near the end of the video we see a smaller version, neatly tucked away over on the left-hand side of the usual copyright notice. If we then look at the second trailer, at around… Hold on a second, let me rewind that a bit… wait, what?
This is where things start to get really interesting.
One Small Step Okay, going back to the Fallout 76 trailers, although the smaller version of the BGS logo can be seen at or near the end of each of these, only the first incorporates the larger, ‘splash-screen’ version. “
But why is this even important?” you may ask. “
They may have simply forgotten to include this detail in the second trailer.” I can assure you that this is most certainly
not the case. In fact, I am one-hundred-percent confident that this was quite intentional. I would even go as far as saying that this one, seemingly insignificant detail, actually brings us a step closer to unlocking the secrets of Starfield. Essentially, Bethesda have taken full advantage of how we all
think we remember certain details, and as such, this is an example of truly expert-level hidden marketing on their part. I also believe it will form the basis of at least one of the big reveals during the showcase.
One Giant Leap Let’s go back one more time to the
Announcement Teaser and the
Gameplay Reveal for Starfield. Look at how drastically different the BGS logo is in
both of these videos compared to any of those used in promoting Fallout 76. What will really blow your mind here is the fact that all four of the trailers mentioned above were first shown to us during the
same two Showcases we have just been discussing! In other words, the first of these videos for both Fallout 76 and Starfield were both unveiled at the 2018 Showcase, and the second of each at the 2022 Showcase. And yet each respective pair make use of drastically different versions of what we all thought was the exact same logo. This means that Starfield has been designed, from the ground up, to be viewed and experienced in a totally different way than, and completely separate from, any of Bethesda’s previous titles.
To clarify this point, after extensive research, I can confirm that this new, animated BGS logo, with the vault door rolling off to the left and then ‘opening up’ just before the text appears,
has never been featured anywhere in an official capacity that is not directly related to Starfield. It is completely unique to this specific IP. This fact ties together everything we have looked at in the post so far. It also lets us see things from a completely different ‘orbital’ perspective. For example, I believe that this information gives us the
real reason why Bethesda worked so hard to secure the full rights to the Fallout franchise in the way that they did. Not only did they wish to create awesome games set within the Fallout universe, but they also needed total freedom to make use of a specific part of this franchise that so that they could then incorporate it into their next, very
very big, space related IP.
For Mankind Okay. This is the part you’ve all been waiting so patiently for. This is the big reveal. For months now, perhaps even years, we have all been drip-fed the idea that Starfield is essentially “
Skyrim in Space.” The reason I think that we have been told this is to misdirect us away from an intrinsic, interwoven connection between Starfield and Bethesda’s other major franchise, which is of course Fallout. But just to put your mind at rest, I do not for a nanosecond believe that the reveal will be, “
We fooled you all, it’s actually Fallout in space!” no matter how cool that might at first sound.
What I do believe is that Starfield will be
so different and
so unique when viewed alongside anything else that Bethesda have published, that it will quite literally take your breath away.
This game,
the spark of which was first ignited 25 years ago, is Todd Howard’s true passion project. Everything else was simply the path he took to finally get here. This is the story he has always wanted to tell, the story of Mankind’s true legacy. And it all starts, just as it did when Interplay released the original
Fallout) game back in 1997, with a familiar, but staggeringly different Vault Door.
The Vault There is a very special and completely unique
hidden Vault in Starfield. Not only is this particular Vault unlike anything you have previously seen anywhere within the
Fallout universe, but it is also unlike anything you have seen in
any game. Period.
This hidden Vault is actually the key to both interstellar and interplanetary travel. And it also happens to be the
single biggest construction project in human history, extending across a span of almost one-hundred light years. And it is not even close to being completed, even after more than two-hundred years of construction.
This Vault is, by its very nature,
completely invisible and shielded away from view. It is quite literally hidden in plain sight, and it can only be accessed through one of its specially crafted Vault Doors. But what does all of this mean for gameplay, and how does something like this even work? I’m glad you asked! Let’s strap in and prepare for launch, because we’re all in for an incredible ride.
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen... to The Starfield
Entering The Starfield The following is my own interpretation, based on scientific reasoning and a huge amount of detailed analysis, of exactly how I think this system works. It is, as ever, backed up with several links throughout, as well as additional evidence for which I shall provide a separate link at end of the post. I am expecting perhaps some differences in terms of specific details once we get hold of the final release of Starfield, but I am confident that I am at the very least well within the ballpark with all of this. Okay, here goes.
The Science Behind the Magic Starfield is the name given to a vast network of interconnecting tunnels, spanning the entirety of the Settled Systems, providing us with a very fast and highly practical means of travelling between different planets, and even different star systems. These tunnels exist within a localized, folded state, known as
Tunnel-Space. The construction of the Starfield is made possible thanks to a technological breakthrough which allows gravitational waves (or
Gravitons) to be woven together to form something known as a
Gravity-Tunnel, which is then stretched out and connected between any two existing stellar objects, such as two planets in a given system, of even two stars from different systems.
In order to maintain the integrity of each tunnel, it is wrapped in a special type of
Exotic Matter known as
Superfluid Helium. This has a number of highly unusual properties, including
negative energy density and
negative energy pressure. This essentially makes it the physical-space equivalent of time going in reverse, meaning that it is capable of counteracting the effects of any conventional physical force, including
the gravitational pull of a black hole. As such, it will hold the structure of the Gravity-Tunnel together for an indefinite period of time over a potentially infinite distance through space.
Within the Starfield are a large number of
Nodes and Junction Points. Nodes are used to connect together all of the planets in any one Star System, and Junction Points then connect different Star Systems together, making use of much larger Gravity-Tunnels that are the equivalent of
Interstate Highways. Note that all flight between any given planet and any or all of its moons is handled locally, outside of the Starfield.
Because all of the stars, planets, and moons in the Settled Systems are in a constant state of flux, by which I mean their relative
distance and
positions) are constantly changing in respect to each other, the tunnels within the Starfield have been designed to be able to expand and contract almost infinitely so that they can accommodate any changes in these two factors depending on when, where, and how you travel.
Although the main tunnels are designed to transport people, resources, waste, and other items directly relating to either Population Centers or Infrastructure, I believe there is also a
sub-system) that will allow much smaller objects, such as probes, to carry
data-packets that can be upload at one location and then downloaded at another, effectively solving the problem of inoperable delays in communication between remote locations.
Inside of each Gravity-Tunnel is a bi-directional
singularity, which can be switched between two opposite
polarities whenever required with the help of the surrounding Exotic Matter, allowing for two-way traffic inside what is essentially a one-way system. This means that, as long as you are able to ensure the correct polarity of all connecting Nodes and Junction Points along your route (as in “
Sky-Bus is converged” and “
Jemison route looks good”), you will be able to travel, in theory at least, from any point A to any point B, as long as all of the required interconnections exist within the system.
When travelling through the Starfield, you will set a specific route, known as a
Sky-Bus, which is a specified pathway that runs from your staring location to your destination. You will then, with the help of
Starfield Control, access the tunnels using a
Gating System which I will explain below. Incidentally, I believe that the accepted in-universe name for the actual transit network that we are making use of within the Starfield is the
Sky-Bus Tunnel System.
Each tunnel in this system actually has two separate ‘Lanes’, one on the left for outbound traffic, and one on the right for incoming traffic. As I have explained above, each of these tunnels can only accommodate a single direction of traffic flow at any given time. And so, a safety measure had to be incorporated to prevent any accidental attempts to travel the wrong way down a tunnel and destroying yourself and your ship.
At each end of any given Node or Junction Point is a
Gate. These are the ‘Vault Doors’ I have been referring to. The Gate comprises of a gigantic metal outer-ring connecting to an inner Vault Door. This Vault Door will either be at the center (closed position), or the left (open position) of the outer ring. The open/left position will allow outbound traffic to leave the orbit of the current planet they are in proximity to. To allow inbound traffic, the entire outer ring, with the Vault Door locked in place, will rotate clockwise through 180 degrees to the open/right position to allow access to the inbound Lane. When the outbound Lane is then once again required, the structure then continues to rotate in a clockwise motion until it reaches the open/left position once again. When required, the Vault Door will return to the neutral position at the center of the ring, and the tunnel will be locked.
Regarding Grav Jumps: Whenever you wish to perform a Grav-Jump, you must first request permission from Starfield Control, who will guide you through the process. Once the route is set and your Exit Gate is locked in place, by activating your ship’s Grav-Drive, along with it’s incorporated spooling system, you will first lock on to the front of the tunnel entrance.
Next, using a system similar to an
Aircraft Catapult, you will be pulled into the tunnel at great speed, where the Graviton Loop Array will hold your ship in-place inside the tunnel, and will also ensure you don’t accidentally go down the wrong path. At the other end, the spooling system described above then acts as an
Arresting Cable, slowing you down over a very short distance.
If all of the above is actually correct, especially the last part, then I think I will be having
this on repeat in the background before Grav-Jumps!
Finally, here is the
link to my additional supporting evidence and other materials, including some stuff I haven’t had a chance to really go into yet. Feel free to throw any questions at me, and I’ll do my best to answer them. In the meantime, Showcase will commence in 24 Hours…

2023.06.10 19:09 Reasonable-Pay-3895 Which equipment technology has improved the most in last 10-20yrs?
The majority of clubs in my bag are incredibly dated and I want to build a priority list for a big upgrade (without spending hours and hours getting fitted for every club in the bag right away). Where should I start?
As title says, which clubs have benefited the most from new technology?
Some context - I was a pretty good junior player but stopped playing regularly after leaving college ~15yrs ago. This year I’m dedicated to playing more and currently handicap is low single digits (using TheGrint app so it doesn’t give me an official GHIN, says I’m a “2-4”).
Here’s what I’m gaming - I don’t hit any of them “bad” per se, so there’s no obvious place to start, but what upgrade would I benefit most from exploring first to spread the expense out??
Driver: Taylor Made Burner circa ‘09
3 wood: Titleist 975F 13.5º circa 1999 (I know people don’t like this club, but I rip it)
Hybrid: Callaway Razr 3, 21º circa 2013
Irons: Titleist 695 CB 4-PW circa 2005
Wedges: Titleist Vokey 52º, 56º, 60º (all from ~2021, so these are still good)
Putter: Scotty Cameron Santa Fe Tei3 circa 2007: you’ll have to pry this from my cold dead hands

2023.06.10 19:01 RazzmatazzRough8168 How should I plan financially?
I am 23 and my wife is also 23. I currently work in insurance and have an A.A degree. My wife is planning to become an RN and currently works as a CNA. I make $26/hour and my wife makes $20/hour. We have alittle over 17k in our joint HYSA. I have been putting in $188 weekly. Around 3k in our joint checkings and 2 personal checking accounts for eachother. I have around $800 in mine and she has around $200.(this is our own money to spend on whatever, no arguments) We put $200 per paycheck into these accounts. But I'm rethinking this amount for her because she doesn't make as much.
We do not have any loans or credit card debt only my wife's student debt around $10k. We are getting married in September (already married legally) a cheap wedding. I plan to put all expenses on a 0% apr credit card that I just got this month 06/2023 for 18 months no interest. Wedding will cost between $5-7k. We will pay this off before apr kicks in. I have a 401k with a 6% match. So I put 6% of my paycheck into it. I started my job 1 year ago and have $4,107.91 in a Vanguard Target RET 2065. I also have a fidelity account with an Individual Investmant account and Roth IRA. In Roth IRA total is $522.28 in DAL, FZROX, QQQ, SPAXX, and VOO. Not evenly. Idk what any of this is or means. In individual account I have 1 share of Ratheon at $103.81.
Our rent is 945 ATM in September its going up to $965. In the summer electic can go upto $70. Internet = $50, I have mint mobile $240 a year. And my wife is on her parents phone. if I had to guess our credits card total around $3-500 every month? Including streaming and groceries and eating out. She came off of spring classes was working mabey 20 hours a week but started back up doing 40 hours. I do plan on going back to school this fall part time. I want to get her setup with 401k as well.but we need advice on this as I blindly put money in stocks I don't fully understand. How can we improve finances?

2023.06.10 18:59 ThatGuySpee Foot Placement for Different Irons
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to get some tips on my set up for different irons. My irons run from a 3 Iron to a 52 Degree, and this how I usually set up each club:
3 & 4 Iron - Closer to my front foot instep, kinda how I would set up for a driver but back a little further.
5 & 6 Iron - about half way between the middle of my stance and my front foot.
7 Iron - Dead Centre.
8 & 9 Iron - just past dead centre and closer to my back foot.
PW/SW/52 - about half way between my back foot and dead centre.
I find I’m okay usually with my placements of my 3-6 Irons but anything after that it varies a lot. I tend to either top the shit out of balls or get way to much lift and not enough distance on my 8 and 9 irons; and I’m just not getting good contact with my Wedges.
Any tips on how I can rectify this? Anything helps! Thanks.

2023.06.10 18:23 North_South_Side Suggestions please: Portable speaker for a car. Details inside.
For reasons I'm not super thrilled about, I am in a car a lot these days. For reasons, my car's radio and sound system is garbage. (It's a nice car, though!)
I have an old UE Roll (disc-shaped kind) that's probably 8 years old. It works fine, but to hear the bass, it needs clear space behind it. It even has a built in hanging cord. It's meant to hang with room behind it for the bass to echo/come out of the back side. Works nicely in many places, but not in my car. I obviously have no good place to hang it in my car without it swinging and spinning around or just getting in the way.
Looking for a compact bluetooth speaker that can sit in the crevice behind the transmission shift... it's roughly a 90 degree angle space where there's a small dish for loose coins and where I put my garage opener. When I tuck the UE Roll in this space, it holds nicely and faces towards me, but almost all of the bass sound is obliterated because it's wedged into a small corner.
So I'm looking for a rod-shaped unit, smallish, where the bass maybe comes out the sides? It does not have to be massive, booming bass-heavy. I just want something that will fit in this spot and will allow me to hear the bass. Needs to be smallish as it has to fit, and I need to take it in with me because I park at work in a semi-sorta petty-crime ridden area. Don't want my windows smashed for a $150 speaker. I don't ever leave anything in my car except a box of kleenex.
Any recommendations? I'll be streaming from an iPhone 14 if that makes any difference. I'd rather not spend more than $250, but if there's a really excellent option that's more expensive, I'd like to hear those, too. Thanks!

Should I quit being an RCCW for this company?
Hi I just got dismissed from my work day today ahead of a meeting that will be held next week regarding my performance and wanted to vent. I am an RCCW which means a Residential Child Care Worker essentially I am a professional parent and exist to look out for the kids who are put in our care home. They have care plans that suit their particular background and behavioural problems and we endeavour to give them an environment that brings the best out of them so they can either hopefully return to their families or at the very least live independent, fulfilling lives as upstanding members of society when they become adults. I chose this job because I wanted to make a difference in the world, to do a job that did good rather than use my degree to go corporate and just make money for rich men. I wanted to learn about members of society that are neglected and stereotyped by the public. But recently my mental health has been plummeting due to my experience working in this home for the first time. I was not given a warm welcome by staff, and since my initial ignoring I have been treated like I am less. I try every day to make the environment a positive place with my presence. Kind to everyone and in a happy mood. I love the children despite how they make behave sometimes and put in a lot of effort to make their days fun and informative and encourage the best in them. However, there feels like 50 rules for me and none for other staff members. For example, there technically should be no vaping in the house. The kids are allowed as we cannot take their vapes for some reason, and all the staff do it but when I do it in the same room as others who do I am shouted at. Or when staff lie down or put their feet up on the sofas that is not disputed but when I do it in the same room it’s being done I’m shouted at. Or I wear modest professional clothing 99% of the time while Team Leaders will wear gym shorts but I am still called in for the one time my belly flashed above my bottoms. There are other ethnic minority workers but I am the only ethnic woman (I am mixed race/black). I travel more than an hour early in the morning to get to work on time and have never missed a bus, some shifts end at 10pm and due to the danger of me travelling alone at night by train my parents come and pick me up each time. I also regularly bake on my free time for the house just to bring some more warmth into the house for staff and children. I do just as much work as everyone else and have lost out on extra work activities such as volunteering for the homeless and Muay Thai because I have no control of the rota. So I have sacrificed a lot for this job. And all this I got sent home today to be told next week they would have a meeting about the future of me as an RCCW. My mental health and my self esteem has been suffering greatly as I am told by one of the children that I am ugly, uninteresting and stupid and I have heard certain staff members talk about me behind my back and tell me to my face that they were surprised anyone would want to be my friend. I was awake last night before work because of stress and cried myself to sleep because my faith in myself, my altruistic goals and people were crashing down. I was so exhausted when I got to work that I fell asleep to which I was yelled at by my deputy manager who I have caught napping myself!
Should I leave? I’m just worried that I won’t be able to find another job like this that suits my future goals while jeopardising my desperate goal to leave the North of England that is full of cruel people like this.

2023.06.10 18:12 Visible_Life14 Discrepant math performance
I have taken almost every math ability test, my scores have been extremely poor on "quantitative knowledge" tests, old sat M, old GRE quant and GMAT quant (bottom 25th percentile GMAT Q). For some background, I have taken some non verbal numerical reasoning tests and my scores fall within the 128-141 range. From where I'm, the emphasis on maths is entirely on the non verbal part, I don't recall solving a word problem or getting to know the intuition behind fractions. It was rote, CPI related mathematics that I did until grade 4, after which I took a year off from school, went back and never understood math again. In 10th finals I barely passed the math test, cramming a week before the exam. When I started college I came across IQ, and tried to prove myself that I can do maths, and took maths. At that point, I didn't know how inequalities work or what <> means, what basic algebra is, I barely remembered division. The math curriculum for two years included linear algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and bunch of other stuff. I crammed the entire thing since everything comes from the book, and got myself a B+. Even after getting done with college, I didn't know what an "Average" or "arithmetic mean" is, neither did I know that a triangle has 180 degrees in total, I learned that through taking old sat math forms. I learned what a distance formula is, and that there are 180 degrees in a line. Although I have a strong base in algebra, and can solve most of the non verbal equations in a whim, I still struggle with alot of more conceptual maths. I have been grinding maths since a month now and I have taken 50+ sat math forms and 28 GRE Q forms, it just doesn't improve.
The only thing college maths helped me with was with my computational ability.
https://www.reddit.com/cognitiveTesting/comments/jpnn77/mental_arithmetic_test/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button I took one of these forms before joining college and got a score between 14-18 iirc, I tried my best. I took both of them today after almost 3 years and got 28/30 on form B and 29/30 on form A.
I have 19ss CAIT DS, 19ss LNS posted by ikokus, 19ss LNS WAIS proctored about 2 years ago, yet a 110 on Arithmetic from WAIS which was recently posted on the sub.
Is my poor maths performance because of the fact that I lack maths ability? Or is it because of my poor educational background? I'm confused, maybe I just don't want to face the truth.

2023.06.10 17:40 FinanceCreditCards Career Change? Coding? Accounting?
Hi everybody- I’m not sure if this is the correct community to be posting this in, but I would love to hear thoughts, advice, etc.
Currently, I make roughly $60k a year doing billing work for a company. I basically am getting paid to do Financial Accounting 100 class all over again (lol).
I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Risk Management, and Insurance. Prior experience in retail management managing 3 leaders and 50+ base-level employees for about a year.
I wanted to hear if anybody has any advice or suggestions on if I should get into coding, accounting, or any other similar field. I did well in my accounting classes in undergrad and would definitely consider getting my MBA and/or becoming a CPA.
I am in my young 20s and am ultimately interested in making more money. I would prefer to work 45 hours or less a week, Monday-Friday, and am open to remote/in-person work.
Any suggestions or guidance on these fields or anything related?
Thank you!

A DEFECT IN NEUROLOGY, NOT A DEFECT OF HUMANITY ADHD: A National Crisis
2023
To Larrakia Country I write to you from the lands and home of Larrakia, in the Northern Territory, which I am grateful to call my home too. Their elders, leaders and children are the owners and protectors of this land and its stories and songs. I am grateful for their hospitality and grace, considering the intolerance and violence that they continue to endure. I dedicate my work and myself to support their stewardship, in whatever role I am asked.
To my sons You are incredible people already. This is one of the biggest things I think I will ever do to make the world you are growing up in a better place than the one I was born into. We have already endured so much together, yet you go from strength to strength. The Blue Witch’s days are numbered.
To E, A, J, M, Ki, N, P, B, Ke, and all the Spirited Children Some might think I paint a bleak picture in this document. You all know this isn’t even the half of it. You deserve the life you want to lead, anything less is a failure, and should be unacceptable to all.
To Dad, Star, Cat, Moh. It is a comfort to know you are somewhere better, when we are left here.
A DEFECT IN NEUROLOGY, NOT A DEFECT IN HUMANITY ADHD: A National Crisis
Abstract ADHD is the biggest and easiest dealt with human challenge of our time. It is a debilitating impairment, that is lifelong and brings no inherent benefits or superpowers. It has likely been a part of hominid neurology for 300,000 years, and in that time it has been systematically rejected by genetic evolution as an enormous set of risks to the survival of the human race. It brings earlier death, more disease, isolation, hopelessness. Making the people who live with it even more remarkable. I have seen neglect, abuse, cruelty and ignorance that would make Dickens blanch. ADHD is routinely rejected, shunned and left in-addressed by Psychiatrists, Paediatricians, Nurses, Teachers, Judges, Police, leaving families in ruins, good and vibrant people be turned to husks, and children as young as 7 turn to suicide.
Not understanding it, not treating it costs our economy $20.5baud a year, if not more.
The need for a national effort to tackle the challenges is paramount to the future success of all Australians.
Self and Evidenced Truths.
- People with ADHD deserve recognition as living beings with rights, dignity, and aspirations despite our impairments.
- Fundamental to those rights, dignity and aspirations being observed we deserve guaranteed access to our medications, support, workplace arrangements and other accommodations across our lifespan.
- ADHD is a current and emerging Australian national crisis that demands immediate response in kind.
- ADHD is a chronic neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorder that impairs many aspects of living, at all points of the lifespan (Faraone et al., 2015).
- People diagnosed with ADHD face higher risks of other neurodevelopmental disorders, of suffering child abuse, experience school exclusions and engagement, discrimination, financial predation, other mental health problems, physical disorders, substance use, accidental injuries, chronic health problems and premature death, including suicide attempts and completions. Children are twice as likely to die by age 10, adults are 5 times more likely to be dead by age 25 (Barkley et al., 2022).
- Stimulant medications should be used as soon as possible and practicable following a diagnosis. Several Stimulant medications are safe and effective for treating ADHD and for preventing many adverse outcomes. Non-Stimulant and Non-medication treatments are less effective. (Storebø et al., 2015).
- ADHD costs Australia $20.4 billion per year in lost productivity, wellbeing, and public services (Deloitte Access Economics, 2019).
- There is a need for more awareness, education, and training explaining what ADHD is, as many people with ADHD remain undiagnosed and untreated due to ignorance, bias, or incompetence (Faraone et al., 2019).
- Australia’s attitude towards ADHD costly, uncoordinated, and unfair. This harms people with ADHD in multiple ways, such as limiting their ability to manage their symptoms, increasing their financial burden, and reducing their social support (Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines for ADHD Working Group, 2022).
As a Matter of Urgency
- The Commonwealth Government must fund a co-designed national awareness campaign for ADHD, highlighting its medical nature, the importance of early and persistent intervention and its impacts across the lifespan, and all aspects of modern life as a matter of priority. a. With particular focus on key peak bodies; Australian Health Practitioners Registration Agency and its members, the Australian Council of Unions and its Members, Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority Curriculum, Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Australian Finance Industry Association, Law Council of Australia, Police Federation of Australia, Universities Australia, and Australian Council for Private Education and Training.
- The Commonwealth Government must expand the professions that can screen, assess and diagnose ADHD to include Teachers, General Practitioners, Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, Midwives and Remote Area Nurses, as well as expand telehealth options for remote areas.
- The Commonwealth Government must establish a national framework for ADHD assessment and support that clarifies roles and responsibilities of different agencies and ensures seamless transitions across life stages and reduce costs for government.
- The Commonwealth Government should mandate that bachelors, postgraduate degrees, and Community Service certificates and diplomas in health sciences, enrolled and registered nursing, education, community health, criminal and industrial law and allied health fields include compulsory modules in ADHD, co-designed with people with ADHD.
- The Commonwealth Government must delist methylphenidate, amphetamines, and their various formulations as Schedule 8 drugs and relist them as Schedule 4, they must also expand Medicare and PBS coverage for ADHD medication to include all people with a diagnosis of ADHD. This would reduce the stigma and discrimination associated with ADHD medication use as well as simplify the prescription and dispensing process for people with ADHD and their prescribers.
- The Commonwealth Government must fund presentation sensitive research on ADHD and its comorbidities, as well as presentation responsive training for anyone who cares for, educates, works with, or employs people with ADHD.
- The Commonwealth Government must direct new training and mentoring programs for practitioners, staff and community and health service delivery areas, focusing on Peri-Natal Services, Daycare and Primary School staff. Rationales Personal Experience My personal experience is as a father of a child with ADHD and as a sufferer of undiagnosed ADHD myself. My professional experience with government, hospitals, mental health, drug and alcohol case management, and the elderly, has led me to being an Advocate.
I suffered countless unnecessary medical, emotional, economic hardships and injustices throughout my life because of my undiagnosed ADHD. As a child I experienced routine ridicule, shame, and punishments. I was regularly abused and excluded by teachers, both immediate and extended family, peers, and random members of the public, verbally and physically. For symptoms, colloquially and incorrectly referred to as behaviours, of my Combined Presentation of ADHD. Combined Presentation of ADHD means that I have both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. Symptoms are the observable signs of ADHD, such as difficulty paying attention, being easily distracted, fidgeting, talking excessively, not saying much, daydreaming, working memory issues, etc. Symptoms that informed my personality and identity, that I was targeted for, abused for.
As I grew up, contrary to popular belief that ADHD symptoms get better as people age, the effects of my undiagnosed ADHD quickly got worse. The lack of access to university due to needing to work to support myself and look after my ailing father put me in unskilled retail positions, which became administrative positions before accidentally falling into Community Services. Through those careers, the constant workplace bullying and harassment prior to my diagnosis, needing to leave positions that were constantly either short contract or put up for recruitment where my skills, knowledge and wisdom meant nothing has left me with a colourful and varied career. The experience is nice but puts me at a significant disadvantage as I get older. My undiagnosed ADHD made it possible for me to perform well in different jobs. But as I juggled time management, organisation, communication, and self-regulation I would be burnt out as I self-medicated with work, and I would become expendable. Less time in positions, less experience, less expertise, less money, less able to provide for my family, less able to take part in society.
Despite my experience with health systems and supporting disabilities, my son who is 5, is facing similar barriers already and he is aware of himself. Being unable to access practical support for his disability, medication has been rationed as though we should be grateful to be receiving any assistance at all. We are 6 months post the last review, and the practitioner we saw last, hopefully mistakenly, provided us with incorrect information. Both his school and education department in the Northern Territory refused to allow therapists into the school to do observations without onerous and impractical limitations, not least of which was opposing observations in classes which effectively means no inclusive practices. It has come to the point where, to conserve his and my own mental well-being we will have to close his plan out. This shows how the education system continues to fail to accommodate the needs of children with ADHD and violates their right to inclusive education, and not much has changed in 30 years.
The emotional and physical toll of everyday life with ADHD and past traumas makes life an ongoing struggle. My Combined Presentation ADHD, physically, is managed, but even that is tenuous. My health is up in the air, as getting regular reviews with a psychiatrist is impossible, despite the medication I am on being perfectly safe and the prognosis of my condition is unremarkable while on medication. Regular reviews with a psychiatrist are essential for monitoring my medication dosage, side effects, and effectiveness, as well as for addressing any other mental health issues that I endure. You’ll need to start another Inquiry before I talk about those though.
ADHD has meant more serious consequences, and harder to rectify situations: homelessness joblessness, discrimination, isolation. I am still standing but am never safe from them. These are some of the ways that ADHD, diagnosed and undiagnosed, has impacted my life. Due to the lack of recognition, respect, dignity that I deserve as a person, disability or not. I received my Diagnosis less than 3 years ago and already I have experienced the best stability and success I have ever had. In this 3 years I have been homeless, unemployed, suffering severe trauma and depression. All dealt with alone.
My NDIS application is now 18 months into its appeal. I wonder if it will survive longer than the AAT?
ADHD assessments and diagnosis: Children and adults with ADHD often face various gaps and barriers in accessing appropriate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment services for their condition. These include lack of awareness and recognition of ADHD among health professionals and the public; stigma and discrimination associated with ADHD; variability in diagnostic practices and criteria; limited availability and accessibility of specialist services; high out-of-pocket costs for diagnosis and treatment; lack of coordination and integration of care across different sectors; insufficient monitoring and evaluation of treatment outcomes; and lack of evidence-based guidelines and quality standards for ADHD care. These gaps and barriers contribute to the underdiagnoses and under treatment of ADHD in Australia and limit the potential benefits of early intervention and quality care.
ADHD management: Qualified and experienced practitioners who can assess and diagnose ADHD in children and adults are in short supply, especially in rural and remote areas. This leads to long waiting times, inflated costs, and inconsistent quality of assessments, and cascading health outcomes. People with the Inattentive presentation of ADHD, which is predominantly girls and women, face significant gender bias in ADHD assessments, support services and research. This leads to under recognition, misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment and supports of both inattentive presentation ADHD and female-specific issues related to ADHD. Different sectors and levels of government fail to coordinate and integrate their support services for people with ADHD. This creates gaps, overlaps and confusion in accessing education, health, disability, and social services. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) staff, and feeder service staff incorrectly prevent and discourage people with ADHD as a primary disability from making access requests. This flows to review mechanisms, including the Australian Administrative Tribunal. This excludes and isolates many people with ADHD from accessing not just NDIS support, but any support at all. Many people with ADHD cannot afford or access ADHD medication, especially those who are not eligible for Medicare or PBS subsidies. This limits their treatment options and affects their quality of life.
The impact of ADHD on individuals, families, and society: Children and adults with ADHD have a significantly reduced life expectancy and are more likely to die prematurely from various causes, such as accidents, suicide, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and substance abuse. The reduction in life expectancy ranges from 9 to 13 years for people with ADHD compared to those without ADHD. The risk of premature death is higher for those with more severe ADHD symptoms, comorbid disorders, and untreated ADHD. In Australia, this means that (statistically) about 1,900 deaths per year would be attributable to ADHD, but further study would be necessary to investigate. Children and adults with ADHD are more likely to suffer from various chronic physical and mental health conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, allergies, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, substance use disorders, and antisocial behavior. These conditions can impair the quality of life and functioning of people with ADHD and increase their health care costs and utilization. In Australia, the annual health system cost of ADHD is estimated to be $546 million. Children and adults with ADHD face various economic challenges and disadvantages, such as lower educational attainment, lower income, higher unemployment, higher poverty, lower productivity, higher criminality, higher health care expenses, and higher social service costs. The annual cost of ADHD to the Australian society is estimated to be $20.4 billion, which comprises $12.8 billion in financial costs and $7.6 billion in wellbeing costs.
Awareness of ADHD: ADHD is not a result of poor parenting, low intelligence, or moral weakness. ADHD is a lifelong condition that can persist from childhood to adulthood and affect various aspects of life. The importance of recognising ADHD as a genetic, neurological medical condition, requiring medication as a first line of successful management, and not a behavioural issue, cannot be overstated. Health professionals, educators, employers and the public lack awareness and understanding of ADHD, which causes stigma, discrimination and underdiagnoses of ADHD. Research funding for ADHD in Australia is inadequate, which hampers the development of evidence-based practice guidelines, interventions, and policies for people with ADHD. This also limits the opportunities for innovation and collaboration in addressing the challenges posed by ADHD. Children with ADHD typically receive a disproportionate percentage of school based harassment, both from peers, and education staff. Routinely EAPs are formulated in opposition to recommendations made by specialist practitioners, and children are severely punished for not meeting the often odious or impossible goals. Detentions, responsibilities, suspensions, supervision and expulsions are common place. In the classroom, ignorant and unqualified teachers harass students and parents to stop behaviours they, from no basis, deem developmentally inappropriate. Time off to be with the excluded children is often supported by employers, higher education facilities, until they decide that enough is enough. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has a strong genetic basis. ADHD is associated with structural and functional differences in the brain, especially in the regions involved in attention, executive function, emotion regulation and reward processing. ADHD is also influenced by environmental factors that can affect gene expression and brain development. The name ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is inadequate and misleading for several reasons. First, it implies that the core symptoms of the disorder are only attention deficit and hyperactivity, while ignoring the causal and key features such as impulsivity, emotional dysregulation, and executive dysfunction. Second, it suggests that attention deficit and hyperactivity are always present and equally severe in all cases of ADHD, while ignoring the heterogeneity and variability of the disorder across individuals, subtypes, and contexts. Third, it conveys a negative and stigmatising view of the disorder as a deficit or a problem, while ignoring the strengths and potential of people with ADHD.
Conclusion The writing is on the wall, whether you read it or not is irrelevant to its truth; improve the outcomes for people with ADHD and the entire nation will benefit, go on ignoring its magnitude and we will continue the cycle again, until the next generation finally addresses it. Addressing it represents net savings for the Commonwealth Government, and the states and territories. I think we could find other ways to spend $7 billion dollars than on badly managing ADHD in Australia.
I am happy to answer more questions or speak to any of the points raised herein.

2023.06.10 16:49 LGBTQIA_Over50 Can I transition to a legal secretary after working in the business world, at middle age, be honest...USA
I reached out on LinkedIn to a senior paralegal who said, "Its never to late to make a change."
I have a multi-industry background in finance, insurance and human resources. I have a degree in finance and a masters. I want to work as a legal secretary to start and support paralegals and attorneys and then work into a paralegal role.
I know how to do research, use Pacer, and take directions.
What could be the reason why I am being automatically rejected?
I'm over 50. My resume is simple, not overly done, not past 10 years, and very specific to legal secretarial work. I highlighted the skills: efficiency, office administration, technology, and customer service.
Do attorneys prefer to hire someone in their 20s to 30s as opposed to someone 55? I understand if they do.
I'm overqualified for service jobs. They turn me down. I need office work in an environment that demands client servicing, research, documentation management and being very supportive of an attorney's needs.
Middle aged people may appear to be less nimble, but that isn't true for me. I still like to learn.

2023.06.10 16:23 _wanderwoman Job/Company Red Flags
Posting this in case anyone needs it, as it has helped me. :)
TLDR; If you're looking for a job and see "family-like" and/or "fast-paced" in the job or company description, do not apply. Also, pay-rate is important, but it isn't worth your health and happiness.
Long story short, I am not in a position where I can afford life without a job, like most of us. Damn. With that said, I am fortunate to have gotten a job where I am actually very happy. I was reflecting on my old job and realized two red flags were right there in the job posting, yet still I applied. So, to anyone who is looking for a job or thinking about leaving their job for something else, please BOLO for:
"family-like" and "fast-paced" environment.
Family-like: You ever hear people being treated poorly - even abused - by family, and they finish their story with "but yanno, that's my mom so." Or, "but it's family." Yes, that is the exact gaslighting that will occur at these types of companies. They want you to feel like you're family, because we do anything for our families, right? Family is the most important thing. Family cares for you, wants what's best for you, so you return the favor.
Fast-paced: Do you enjoy shifting policies and procedures? How about being uncertain as to whether or not you're going to lunch on time, or at all? In fact, you will be worked so much, you won't even realize you missed lunch. It's a good thing you're a multitasker, because your workload will involve doing multiple things at once at any given moment.
After I quit that job and began looking for something else, I avoided any job that had those catchphrases in their description. It wasn't easy, in fact it was discouraging. Have a laugh: I saw a job listing that required a bachelor's degree for $12/hr. The market is shit, I know, but don't settle. Finally, my friend got me in with his job. I took a massive paycut - $6.50/hr to be exact but LET ME TELL YOU, It's worth it. Nothing "family like" or "fast paced" here. I am not being micromanaged, I am not expected to do more than my job title, I am not asked to stay late/work extra. Also, no forced company outings or events. It's exactly what work should be - no more than the 40 hrs I signed on for, no more than my job title states.
I hope some one reads this and can avoid being trapped into a soul-crushing gig at the expense of their mental/physical wellbeing. You deserve a job that allows you to live.

2023.06.10 15:27 shawnwarnerwrites Going back to school and need an outside perspective of which path to take
Sorry for the wall of text, tl;dr at bottom. After 35 years of fucking around and finding out, I got myself on my feet. I work for USPS as a tractor trailer driver (sometimes clerk, when I'm lucky enough to get a detail) for 32/hr and I *hate* it. I realize that this is highly subjective and people will have different opinions on the subject, I'm looking for those opinions so I can use them to inform my own. I got an associates degree in 2016 in an engineering transfer program, and did decently in the program with a 3.3 GPA. I recently saw that the University of North Dakota had an online asynchronous civil engineering program and said what the hell and applied. Having been rejected from a number of civil engineering programs I did not expect much. To my surprise, I was accepted, and then I learned that its hard to get rejected from that school. Oh well, ups and downs. I start this fall. I can, right now in my current job, easily afford part time tuition² out of pocket. Regardless, I will probably take out loans as I already have an active PSLF dingus going on and its free¹ money. I have a ton of downtime at work and my bosses are amenable to me doing schoolwork during downtime. Steady as she goes is sustainable. But it is not really helpful for my career goals. I would very much like to stay with the federal government for the rest of my career, and pathways internships seem like a good way to transition. But pathways internships are GS-4 which is like 16/hr. I have multiple offers from multiple agencies for GS-4 engineering internships that would allow me to work full time and go to school part time, something I discussed up-front in each of my interviews. I could probably afford living expenses if I scrimp but if I went this route my income would drop by 50% and there is no guarantee that the financial aid office would allow an income adjustment so that I could get enough financial aid to pay tuition. BUT, when I finish the degree, I will probably¹ be converted to a career position on the GS-13 ladder, which is over 100k/yr. This option would be ideal *if* I can get an income adjustment, which the financial aid office says I have actually do it before they can give me an answer. Infuriating bureaucracy at its worst. Another option is to move to North Dakota. I am enough of a veteran to qualify for in-state tuition but not enough to qualify for the GI bill¹, and the in-person tuition is 60% of the online tuition. The cost of living in North Dakota is also *much* cheaper than Rhode Island. I have an offer from the municipal bus service to drive a city bus for $21/hr, and they said they would work around my school schedule. After adjusting for rent, tuition, differences in the cost of insurance, etc, I would have about 3/4 the amount I do now left over every month. But North Dakota is cold and far away from my friends, as well as being hostile to LGBT¹. But I have no doubt that academically I will do better in person vs. online. I'm also 35 and worried I will be socially isolated in a college town. ¹I am fully aware this is a complicated and loaded statement, it is also not at all what I'm concerned about right at the moment. ²USPS does not have a tuition assistance program for union employees.
tl;dr: I have three options, one best for my near-term finances, one best for my career goals, and one best for my academic goals. I'm having trouble choosing and would appreciate an outside perspective.

2023.06.10 14:52 Blaze_mu4e Advice / Opinions welcome
Been with other half for over 7 years, both divorced and in our early 50’s. Just over two years ago he decided he would sell his house and we talked about buying a place together. We looked at houses, went to see his mortgage advisor, got my place valued and went through finances. Suddenly he backed out and said he was buying a small property for his daughter to live in as she wanted to go up country to complete her masters degree. I was so devastated, hurt and felt like I’d been taken for a mug! The house meant she had somewhere to store her stuff and come back to if she wanted. The day she went to uni she came back home within 12 hours deciding it wasn’t for her. She got a good job locally and is earning really good money and my partner pays all the bills and charges her £200 a month rent! Meanwhile he pays me rent to live with me, so technically it feels like he’s a lodger in my house, but we still share our lives.
Fast forward to today. My mortgage is going up and up, three times more than it was 18 months ago. His daughter is nearly 27 and still living in partners house. Been talking recently about selling both houses, pooling equity to buy a place together, mortgage free. When I pushed for an answer to this, because I want to start planning and for us to be more financially stable and build on our future, the reply I got from my partner was, “I need to talk to daughter to ask her permission. I’m afraid if she doesn’t like it she will disown me as a father!” It’s worth noting he has a slightly older son who he treats so very differently. Daughter has not once come to the home we share since living together, partner always goes to her, especially when I’m away working. I’m now at breaking point thinking he’s controlled the pace of our whole relationship, but it feels as if his daughter is in charge of him and in a sense my life too. I have four adult daughters who I’m incredibly close to and all stand on there own two feet, but know I’m there for support and love. I’ve told my partner that I think we’ve come to the end of the road. I just don’t think I can trust him and honestly I think he should be putting us first. It seems to me that he is enabling her to be a spoilt adult princess, who will never learn the value of things or life and will have no coping mechanisms when things get tough.

2023.06.10 14:30 LanesGrandma Antique Evil
(Content warning: Horror)
The curator loved old things, not old evil. The two converged at Clayburn Offshore Treasury. Museum jobs are hard to get, even with all the right degrees. Getting hired to run the Clayburn Offshore Treasury? That’s winning the museum employment lottery. It’s the Clayburn family’s very elite, very private museum. Anyone serious about preserving our past would be honored to be hired there.
I was over the moon. According to Clayburn – Mr Clayburn Jr, my new boss – I was the first new hire since he took over from his late father in 2006. Judging by his appearance, I guessed Clayburn was no more than 18 when his dad died. The previous curator died less than two weeks before I was hired. I’m ashamed to admit this but at the time, I blamed him for neglecting the building since Clayburn probably hadn’t learned much from his dad.
Clayburn had a few rules for me, not many. The big rule was, I had to summarize intentions and get his permission before going beyond the stuff on the list of daily routines left by the last curator.
My first priority was to modernize security. To me, that was more important than any daily routine. I felt it was critical, given the number of priceless artifacts and how simple it would have been for anyone to walk in and out with whatever they could carry. Plus, the Treasury is attached to what Clayburn calls “the main building”, a large brick house for him and the current museum curator.
The only other man-made objects on the small island were the boathouse and the massive shed for cut wood and three months of food and supplies for two, in case winter weather prevented the monthly deliveries by boat. There was nothing else on the island, I was sure of it. I’d walked every sandy inch of it to make sure I hadn’t missed a fence that needed mending or a sign or window that needed replacing. Once I got my thoughts in order, I texted my ‘outline of intent’ for security, stressing how this would help all buildings on the island. Clayburn approved it all. Cameras and locks took a couple of weeks to arrive, but installations all went smoothly.
The bigger challenge was environmental modification, to better preserve exhibits and the items held in storage. That upgrade was only for the Treasury proper. Of course, to provide proper environmental upgrades for the items, I needed a full list of everything in the Treasury’s care. Clayburn was quick to provide that to me after security was beefed up.
The list detailed the name of each item, current location, how and when it was obtained by the Treasury, and any special instructions. Several magnificent items stood out, a couple of which the outside world considered “lost to history”.
One of those caused me to gasp with joy: Aeyotin the Constant. The entry for him read:
On June 2, 1931, one Mr. Graviston Davis III entrusted Clayburn’s father, Jed Senior, with the legendary automaton Aeyotin the Constant. Mr. Clayburn Sr or his descendents or next of kin must be present before Aeyotin’s secure holding box is opened, and the box must never leave the Treasury property under any circumstances. Abandon rather than relocate.
Automatons aren’t widely known and that’s a shame. They’re like early androids, machines designed to look and act like humans. There are some like animals, of course, but the human ones interest me the most. The best are programmed to perform activities that appear to be random or in response to external stimuli rather than on a regular cycle.
I’d assisted with several vintage automatons before this job, and even got behind the scenes at the Smithsonian to see the Praying Monk up close. The Monk was wonderful, automatons in general are wonderful and I love them
I desperately wanted to examine Aeyotin. He’d been in the building for more than 90 years. Who knew what sort of deterioration had occurred since his arrival? I had to document his condition and take all necessary measures to restore him as far as possible.
I texted Clayburn to get permission to view Aeyotin.
Clayburn’s reply text was quick and unexpected. He told me to stand still until he was present and that he would be with me in less than 10 minutes.
Aeyotin was an automaton, not a mass murderer, and I was well trained in handling antiquities. Being asked to remain motionless seemed excessive, even insulting. Still, I’d just landed a great job and didn’t want to get fired so I stood there, motionless..
On arrival, Clayburn asked me to keep my phone handy and to stand at the doorway until he opened Aeyotin’s box.
“If anything goes wrong, call Ron Lundholm. If it goes really wrong, get the motorboat. Call Ron once you’re a mile out.”
Clayburn was clearly concerned. Fair enough, I thought, he hadn’t known me long enough to trust me thoroughly and he might not have a lot of faith in himself. I accepted I would have to prove my worth to Clayburn so I stood and watched him carefully open what looked like a metal broom closet.
He then backed up, bringing with him a smaller wooden container large enough to hold a child. He stopped arms length from me and laid the container gently on the floor. Without taking his eyes off it, he handed me a small ring of keys. “Never lose these.”“No sir, I won’t.”
“This container must never leave this property.” He unlatched the container as gently as I would expect when dealing with locks almost 100 years old. And with that, he pried open the top to reveal Aeyotin the Constant. Maybe it’s scientifically possible for air from an old wooden container to smell differently than the air around the container. I’m not sure how that small amount of air could instantly change the smell of the air in a three story building, but it did. Then again, if the air had smelled like wood and old oil, I doubt I’d have given it a second thought.Clayburn opened the container and I was overcome by the smell of old books, seaweed and formaldehyde, most unpleasant. Along with the odor came an odd feeling, oppressive, almost dread. A sense of something, for lack of a better term, unholy. It was so strong, I wanted to ask Clayburn about it. But before I could speak, he started reciting facts like he was a robot reading from a too-fast teleprompter.
“He’s three feet tall, made of delicately carved and painted wood with metal inner workings. He would walk, pause, close his eyes and raise his prayer beads. He prayed in a melodious voice. He raised his eyes to Heaven and resumed walking. For hours.”
He paused for a breath. “He was created no later than 1529.”I took a half step forward, thinking he was having a medical issue. If I got him to put the lid back, maybe I could convince him to go to the main building where our living quarters were. He could get a glass of water, and lie down. Again, before I could speak, he motioned me back by sweeping his arm towards me. “No closer!”
He resumed his too-fast recitation. “Some say he was created by the genius who later created the Praying Monk for Charles the Fifth.“
He paused again and I couldn’t stop myself from speaking. “Thank you, yes, there’s talk that Aeyotin became conscious, and–”
Clayburn looked at me, barely breathing. The hairs on my arms rose and my stomach tightened. Something was beyond not right.
“Sir, if you’d like, I can take over from here. I’ll be most careful.”Clayburn’s demeanor softened. “Yes! Yes, that pleases him. I’m going for lunch now.”
When I heard a door close, I figured it was Clayburn returning to the main part of the building. Only then did I feel safe enough to approach Aeyotin.
“Hello there,” I said, hoping to make the silence less creepy. By speaking to a creepy, child-sized, 500 year old wooden doll. No wonder my stomach tightened further. It was smarter than me that day.
It’s good practice and part of my work routine to wear gloves before touching artifacts. Out of habit I carry a few pairs with me all day, every day. As I put on a pair to examine Aeyotin, I noticed how badly my hands were shaking. That changed my course of action. I wouldn’t risk damaging Aeyotin by trying to pick him up. It would be enough to do a quick check of his physical condition then make sure the door was locked when I left. Everything else could wait until the next day.
Starting at his head, I pressed gently into the surrounding material to ensure there weren’t any wood or paint chips or any other signs of deterioration. Given the estimated age, I wasn’t surprised to feel something pliable behind him. It didn’t take long to see the object was paper, which I was able to remove by raising Aeyotin’s head ever so slightly.
I followed standard museum measures to retrieve and open the papers folded behind Aeyotin’s body. There was what looks like ancient paper, stuff that I would only open in a fully controlled environment. I felt it was safe to open the newer parchment and yes, the parchment seemed newer than the paper even though it was delicate and appeared to be over 50 years old.
The parchment started with a message written by Mr. Jed Clayburn Sr and his then attorney, Wilson Hughes Baine III. It was dated July 2, 1931 and it made me work some math before I could go any further.
I, Jed Clayburn, being of sound mind and body at age 57, do hereby make this declaration on July 2, 1931 in the presence of my attorney, Wilson Hughes Baine III, both of us from Flagmaker Country, (state name isn’t legible).
Hereunder is true to the paper as humanly possible. That means Mr. Clayburn Sr was born in 1874. He was 132 years old when he died in 2006. That’s significantly older than the oldest verified person, ever.
Under any other circumstances, I would have written this off as unreliable, verging on a hoax. Problem was, there was a birth certificate and a baptismal certificate included in the paperwork. Both of them were in very good condition, having been protected by several layers of cloth.
No death certificate, though. And no birth or baptismal certificate for Mr. Clayburn Jr. It could have been a well orchestrated hoax and I didn’t see how it could affect me at all so I moved on.
Then I read the rest of the document and wished I hadn’t.
This is Aeyotin the Constant who on Friday, November 4, 1530 was at the site of the St Felix Flood. Aeyotin the Constant instructed the adults therein to pray to the Lord who created this planet lest they die and leave their souls in peril. The Flood on the day of Saturday, November 5, 1530, sent 100,000 souls to their well-deserved location be that Heaven, Hell or Neither.
Curators benefit from a strong artistic nature. My imagination has always been helpful. I’d never have described it as vivid prior to reading that paragraph. As I read it, I felt my blood grow colder as humidity increased and breezes unsettled my footing. There was no explanation for the wind but it got stronger and stronger until I had to grip the sides of the display table close to Aeyotin’s container to stay upright. The winds were fierce yet neither the parchment in my hand nor Aeyotin’s container moved. I took a deep breath to clear my head and choked, unable to breathe Seawater forced its way into my nose, throat and ears. Without thinking I released the parchment and staggered backwards, away from Aeyotin who remained desert dry.
Another wave hit me. Water pressed down on my head and into my eyes. Seaweed wrapped around my nose and throat. I scrabbled at it, pulled at it and it broke in my hand. I couldn’t breathe air anymore. My lungs felt heavy, filled with water.
I knew I was drowning.
My body bent backwards.
I couldn’t scream.
I exhaled.
Falling.
Dark.
I grabbed the sides of the display table and gasped. A piece of seaweed clung to my left hand.
But there was no water. There was no flood.
I wasn’t close to drowning but my mind thought I was.
That flood is recorded history. Aeyotin’s appearance is not part of the history as I learned it, and it’s rather creepy that he would be reported there shortly after he was allegedly built. To think people actually mistook the automaton’s programmed behavior for preaching was more than creepy. It was horrifying.
The parchment was lying on the table as if I’d only just set it there.
My heart rate slowed a bit as I tried to calm down. My muscles, however, remained tense and I couldn’t stop staring at the seaweed. Logically, I wanted to run. Yet I felt compelled to read the next event listed.
“I refuse to feel what they felt.” I stared at Aeyotin feeling both foolish and scared to bits. “I, I don’t need to. I understand the words.“
Aeyotin winked. Obviously that couldn’t have happened. I wrote it off as a trick of the mind, something I imagined to reassure myself about continuing my work.
This is Aeyotin the Constant who was at the village in England that aided Alexander Leighton in 1630. Aeyotin the Constant instructed the adults therein to pray to the Lord who created this planet lest they die and leave their souls in peril. When the prayers were completed he instructed the adults therein to drown all of the children in the Cavernous Bog. I took a short break to remember I was not going to feel what any of the victims felt. Other than terror, of course, something I was going to feel no matter what I did or didn’t read.
Back to the parchment.
He then instructed the adults therein to enter the Cavernous Bog praising the Lord lest their children’s souls remain in peril. This sent 103 souls to their well-deserved location be that Heaven, Hell or Neither.
A list of 103 victims, allegedly authorized by Charles II the King, was included.
Alexander Leighton, a Scottish Presbyterian who upset English royalty and was made to suffer for it. How could 103 people, many of whom were adults, confuse the automaton’s activities with a call to murder children before commiting mass suicide in a very terrible way? Who was traveling around with Aeyotin 100 years after his creation, and why? That gave me a new rush of cold fear down my spine.
This is Aeyotin the Constant who was at the village on the east coast of Acadia that failed to act on behalf of King George II, prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire, in 1730. Aeyotin the Constant instructed the false priest and the adults therein to pray to the Lord who created this planet lest they die and leave their souls in peril. When the prayers were completed he instructed the adults therein to tie all of the children in the false cathedral. Time to prepare for another horrible event. No good can come of adults tying children in a church, false cathedral or otherwise. After a few deep breaths, I went back to the parchment.
He then instructed the adults therein to remain in the false cathedral, praising the Lord lest their children’s souls remain in peril. Lastly he instructed the false priest to set fire to the cathedral from the inside while praising the Lord, lest any soul remain in peril. This action, sent 47 souls to their well-deserved location be that Heaven, Hell or Neither.
A list of 47 victims, including their ages showing most were children, was included. It, too, was allegedly authorized.
While this is the lowest number of murders on the page, it was the one that cut me to the core.
Who brought Aeyotin to North America in 1730 and allowed adults to burn children to death? How could the adults do it?
The ice in my spine put pressure on my heart. I felt emotionally broken and deeply afraid and it all related to Aeyotin. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake the feeling I was in the presence of evil.
Further to the words from the parchment, I assert and affirm, Mr. Graviston Davis III of Flagmaker Country entrusted me with Aeyotin the Constant one month ago. Prior to that date, Aeyotin the Constant had been held captive in the Davis family mausoleum since being discovered at the edge of the village limits in 1732 when new colonizers arrived, expecting to find a pre-existing village. They instead found the burnt-out remains and no survivors save the automaton who told Mr. Davis’ ancestor each of the three events outlined here. I or my descendents or next of kin must be present before Aeyotin’s secure holding box is opened, and the box must never leave the Treasury property under any circumstances. Do not activate him. Do not engage in dialog. Block your ears if he should speak. Shield your eyes if he should beckon. Above all, abandon rather than relocate. That was enough Aeyotin for one day. I took photos of the parchment and the other forms before folding the documents together and replacing them under Aeyotin’s head. As I laid his head back, one eye winked. It definitely winked this time, eyelid raised and lowered.
I have no memory of screaming. But someone in that room screamed.
The scream was loud enough to rouse Clayburn who rushed back from the main building. I was still bent over Aeyotin in his wooden container when Clayburn arrived.“Back up two steps,” he said. “Don’t stand up until then.” His tone was calm, too calm, as if he’d been through this before.
I did as directed.
Clayburn moved closer to the wooden container and stared at Aeyotin for a few seconds before speaking again. “What did he say?”
I shook my head slightly. “Nothing. But thanks for confirming Aeyotin can talk.”
Clayburn put the lid over Aeyotin but didn’t latch it. He turned, his face still flushed from running. His gaze went from me to Aeyotin and back to me. “Mostly gives orders.”
“Yeah,” I said, taking a half step back, “I read that.”
Clayburn took a step towards me. I should have taken another step back, or possibly left the room. Instead, every muscle in my body tensed as I stared at his face.
Until the time he left me alone with Aeyotin, Clayburn had looked every inch a man in his mid-thirties.
He looked twice that age.
“It’s been the experience of a lifetime working here, sir.” I extended my hand. Clayburn stared at it without moving a muscle. He was still for so long, I looked at my hand to see what was wrong.
It wasn’t just my hand. All of my visible skin looked like well aged wood. I tried to scream but my jaw creaked open very slightly then snapped shut. My right hand grabbed and squeezed my throat, not enough to choke me but enough to prove I was not in control.
With my hand still on my throat, I said, “This is mine, anytime I want it.” It wasn’t my voice. Then my hand released my throat and smacked the lid off Aeyotin’s container.
I wanted to cry, to scream, to go back a few weeks in time and not apply for this job but it was too late. Unsure how to proceed, I looked at Clayburn. His expression was one of sympathy and sadness, like he was at a friend’s funeral.
My heart froze.
This is what evil feels like, and I am it.
“We shall meet again,” Clayburn said, turning to bend again towards the wooden container. “Take the motorboat and call Ron when you reach shore. He’ll tow it back for me.”
