The Amazing Culture and Lifestyle of the UAE A Student’s Perspective

The Amazing Culture and Lifestyle of the UAE A Student’s Perspective
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a country that offers a rich and diverse culture and lifestyle for its residents and visitors. As a student who has been living and studying in the UAE at the Britts Imperial University College for the past year, I have been amazed by the beauty, hospitality, and tolerance of this nation.

https://preview.redd.it/zdsm01mgnt4b1.jpg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a8476e2c3e3200c8e384c77176fd8c499ed60c7a
Culture
The UAE has a culture that reflects traditional Arab and Islamic values, as well as influences from Persian, Indian, and Western cultures. The UAE is home to people from over 200 nationalities, who live and work together in harmony and respect. The UAE also celebrates its heritage and history through various festivals, museums, and monuments.
Some of the cultural aspects that I have enjoyed learning about are:
Social life:
The Emiratis are very friendly and hospitable people, who value family, friendship, and community. They often invite guests to their homes for coffee or tea, and serve dates, nuts, and sweets. They also greet each other with a handshake or a kiss on the cheek, depending on the gender and relationship. They dress modestly and conservatively, especially in public places. Women wear a long dress called an abaya and a headscarf called a shayla, while men wear a long white robe called a kandura and a headscarf called a ghutra.
Art:
The UAE has a vibrant art scene, with many talented artists, galleries, and museums. The UAE also hosts international art events such as Art Dubai and Sharjah Biennial. Some of the traditional art forms that I have admired are pottery, weaving, metalworking, calligraphy, and henna. These art forms showcase the craftsmanship, creativity, and aesthetics of the Emirati culture.
Food:
The UAE cuisine is a fusion of Arabian, Persian, Indian, and Western cuisines. It is rich in spices, herbs, rice, meat, fish, and vegetables. Some of the dishes that I have tried and loved are hummus (chickpea dip), falafel (fried chickpea balls), shawarma (meat wrap), makbous (rice with meat or fish), biryani (rice with meat or vegetables), luqaimat (fried dough balls with date syrup), and kunafa (cheese pastry with sugar syrup). The UAE also has a coffee culture, where coffee is served hot, strong, and sweet in small cups.
Lifestyle
The UAE has a lifestyle that is modern, cosmopolitan, and dynamic. The UAE offers a high standard of living, with excellent infrastructure, education, health care, entertainment, and security. The UAE also has a diverse natural environment, with deserts, mountains, beaches, islands, and oases.
Some of the lifestyle aspects that I have enjoyed experiencing are:
Architecture:
The UAE has some of the most stunning and innovative architecture in the world. The UAE boasts of iconic landmarks such as Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world), Burj Al Arab (the most luxurious hotel in the world), Palm Jumeirah (the largest artificial island in the world), Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque (the largest mosque in the country), Louvre Abu Dhabi (the first universal museum in the Arab world), and Dubai Frame (the largest picture frame in the world).
Sports:
The UAE has a passion for sports, both traditional and modern. The UAE hosts international sporting events such as Formula One Grand Prix, Dubai World Cup (horse racing), Abu Dhabi Golf Championship, Dubai Tennis Championship, Dubai Rugby Sevens, and Abu Dhabi Triathlon. Some of the traditional sports that I have watched and participated in are camel racing, falconry, dhow sailing (wooden boat sailing), horse riding, archery, and desert safari.
Recreation:
The UAE has a lot of options for recreation and entertainment for all ages and interests. The UAE has world-class malls, cinemas, theaters, parks, museums, beaches, and resorts.
The UAE also has some of the best theme parks in the world such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi (the fastest roller coaster in the world), Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi (the largest indoor theme park in the world), Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi (the largest water park in the Middle East), IMG Worlds of Adventure Dubai (the largest indoor theme park in the world), and Dubai Parks and Resorts (the largest integrated theme park destination in the Middle East).

Incorporating Patterned Backdrops in Product Photography
Welcome to our comprehensive guide on incorporating patterned backdrops in product photography. At Best Ever Backdrops, we understand the importance of creating captivating visual content to enhance your online presence and drive more traffic to your website. In this article, we will explore the various benefits of using patterned backdrops, such as white marble, black, custom, personalized, vinyl, and wooden backdrops, and specifically focus on their application in food photography. With our expert tips and insights, you'll be able to create stunning product images that stand out from the competition.

Photography Backdrops
The Power of White Marble Backdrops:
White marble backdrops exude elegance and sophistication, making them an excellent choice for product photography. The clean and minimalist aesthetic of white marble complements a wide range of products, from jewelry and fashion accessories to home decor and cosmetics. The subtle veining patterns on white marble create visual interest without overshadowing the main subject, allowing your product to take center stage. By using a white marble backdrop, you can achieve a timeless and luxurious look that appeals to your target audience.
Photography Backdrops for Versatility:
When it comes to product photography, versatility is key. Investing in a range of backdrops, such as white and black, opens up endless possibilities for showcasing your products. While white backdrops provide a classic and clean look, black backdrops add depth and drama to your images. By utilizing both options strategically, you can create a diverse portfolio of product photos that cater to different moods, themes, and branding styles. Experimenting with these contrasting backdrops will help you find the perfect balance for your product photography needs.

Custom Photo Backdrops for Brand Consistency:
To establish a strong and recognizable brand identity, it's crucial to have consistent visuals across all your marketing channels. Custom photo backdrops offer a fantastic opportunity to incorporate your brand colors, logos, or unique patterns into your product photography. By designing personalized backdrops, you can infuse your brand's personality into every image, creating a cohesive and memorable visual experience for your audience. Whether you opt for a custom pattern, a repeating logo, or a specific color scheme, these personalized backdrops will help your products stand out while reinforcing your brand's message.
The Practicality of Vinyl Backdrops:
When it comes to product photography, durability and ease of use are paramount. Vinyl backdrops provide an excellent solution for photographers seeking practicality without compromising on aesthetics. These backdrops are lightweight, water-resistant, and easy to clean, making them ideal for shooting food products. Whether you're capturing vibrant fruits, delectable desserts, or savory dishes, vinyl backdrops offer a convenient and reliable option that can withstand spills, stains, and frequent use. With a wide variety of patterns and textures available, vinyl backdrops allow you to create captivating compositions that make your culinary creations truly irresistible.
Enhancing Food Photography with Wooden Backdrops:
Food photography requires a careful balance of aesthetics and ambiance. Wooden backdrops offer a rustic and natural appeal that beautifully complements various culinary creations. Whether you're showcasing artisanal bread, farm-fresh produce, or gourmet dishes, wooden backdrops provide a warm and inviting setting that transports viewers to a cozy kitchen or a charming countryside. The unique grain patterns and textures of wooden backdrops add depth and character to your food photography, making it more visually engaging and enticing to your audience.
Incorporating patterned backdrops in product photography can elevate the visual appeal of your images, captivate your audience, and help you stand out from your competitors. Whether you choose the timeless elegance of white marble, the versatility of black and white backdrops, the customization of personalized options, the practicality of vinyl, or the rustic charm of wooden backdrops, selecting the right backdrop for your product photography is essential. By carefully considering the aesthetics and themes that align with your brand, you can create visually stunning product images that leave a lasting impression on your target audience.

2023.06.08 14:40 tryingrfa I'm going to buy paper plates

My depression is so bad and has been for a long time. I guess I just thought I'd wake up one day and feel better, like when you get a warm sunny day after a long and harsh winter.
But it hasn't come. I don't cook anymore because I don't want to do the dishes. I WON'T do them. They will sit and collect mold.
And I hate creating waste so I've always tried to say no to single use products. Honestly have shamed myself and others for using them.
Now I still agree they aren't the best, but I understand. They definitely have their place. I'm going to buy paper plates and disposable cutlery, and focus on one-pot meals. I still deserve to eat and have a clean home, and if this helps me / other people, then I'm glad they were invented and I shouldn't think less of people who use them.

2023.06.08 14:31 tayostation28 Fun-Packed and Entertaining Activities Your Kids Can Enjoy in Indoor Party Rooms

The cake is an integral part of a kid's birthday party celebrations. But, if you have invited your kid's friends to the party, you need more than the cake to entertain them. Organizing a party for tiny guests and finding the best games to amuse them could frustrate parents. Therefore, instead of hosting your little monster's birthday party at home, booking an indoor Party Room Singapore for a memorable celebration is always an amazing and cost-effective idea.
Here’s why celebrating kids’ birthdays at Singapore’s indoor party rooms is relaxing and preferable for parents.
● Indoor party rooms always have ample space for guests. Besides, kids can enjoy fun activities without fearing injury and strangers. If your birthday boy/girl wants an active and entertaining party, they can get enough space to spread their wings.
● Choosing a party room makes parents' lives easier. Parents don't need to worry about the thematic decoration because the staff manages everything proficiently. Whether your kid wants Superman theme décor or any other cartoon character, discuss the theme with the management and let them manage everything accordingly.
● Undeniably, preparing your kids favorite food on their special day requires effort and considerable time. But it's not a problem when you celebrate your birthday in the party room. If you have chosen a party package that offers food, then nothing better than attending a party where you can enjoy a variety of dishes.
The perks mentioned above have made it evident that celebrating kids birthday parties is an ideal choice for parents.
Now if you have decided to celebrate your kid's birthday in a party room, you should also know about games and activities for your kids and their friends to keep them happy and satisfied.
Fun Activities to Keep Kids Happy in a Party Room
Here’s the list of games and activities we have compiled for you.
● Donut on a String
Eating contests are everyone's favorite, including little monsters. Surely, it's a messy activity but organize it well to avoid it. Also, being a little grubby is okay if your kids enjoy it. Contestants need to finish the donut before it falls off the string. The one who finishes the doughnut first wins the competition. Hilarious for the parents and tasty for the kids.
● Oreo Balance
Food activities are always delightful for the kids as they can eat the food soon after the activity ends and sometimes during the activity. This challenging game keeps kids alert and focused on balancing cookies on their faces. One wrong move and the 'oooppsss' cookie is gone.
● Face Painting
Face painting is kids' favorite and desired activity. Depending on the age of the guests, you can paint their faces with beautiful stars, butterflies, or any other appealing thing. Older kids can paint others' faces, or you can take help from a professional face painter.
Final Words
From egg and spoon race to balloon burst and hula hoop pass, there are endless fun activities to keep your kids entertained in indoor party rooms. So, celebrate your little monster’s birthday in a party room and make their day special.

2023.06.08 11:33 Nokidsinthisburrow AITA for having an attitude with someone who took me in?

A few years ago my life partner convinced me to move in with a relative and her husband. I agreed even though I didn't really wanna move, but thought it would be best for my partners mental health.
The relative, Morgan, for the sake of privacy. She's with someone who lives in a family home on private property, and they said it wouldn't be a big problem for us to move in. We did so under the agreement that I would learn how to drive from Morgan's husband (Mike) ( I didn't before because the city we lived in didn't require it) and they said I could either pay Mike's father rent because he owns the house or I could help them with bills. Well Mike's dad butted in and said he just wanted a couple hundred for rent.
So, they came and picked us up to move in, Mike even helped me get a job. My partner doesn't work because they can't drive and we live in the middle of nowhere, so I work for the two of us.
Well anyways, not to long after moving in, I got guilted into buying Morgan a bunch of stuff because she was sad for one reason or another, or they were short on money. I didn't mind to much. Aside from that, the last few years, Mike and Morgan constantly get into screaming matches, they have several pets they barely care for that pee poo and puke all over the house. They don't clean up after themselves and the house is so dirty we have to wear sandals to walk around and not step in something gross, they leave dirty dishes on the counters and tables for months and let their pets mess in them as well.
They decided to do several renovations on their home that they've never finished as well, including ripping up their bathroom tiling. We've had to shower with plastic up every time to not get the wall wet for years now. Aside from my initial rent agreement, I've gotten guilted into paying other bills for them as well. I have resting dick face and a mean voice, but it's unintentional and they know that.
Recently, they accused me of not paying a bill on time, and I was pretty sure I was ahead on this bill. Well this turned into me getting screamed at because I got an attitude, and basically got told I'm an asshole all the time.
I'm wondering if I am the asshole though, because I'm living in their house for cheap rent and I still have to be driven most places ( every time I have the money for a car I've had to give it to them or someone else for one reason or another). I know I can sound like I'm trying to be mean sometimes to because of my tone too, but most of the time I'm not or I'm just generally frustrated and trying to make a joke about it to calm down. I admit, I got a bit passive agressive when I found hardened pee in one of my casserole dishes I'd only gotten to use once.
I'm really really worried I'm the asshole because I know they're struggling with money, and that I'm just over reacting, but I've been in a lot of abusive situations and my point of view can kinda be skewed sometimes so I wonder if it's just that or what. Please judge me.

2023.06.08 09:02 WyrmInk Rosemary the Lore Bard, the Chef

I just want to talk about my little chef Rosemary, and my experience playing and roleplaying a bard.
I'll go over build and spells by memory then my playstyle with her.
Love Grows where Rosemary Goes. Tabaxi (MPMM) 10 Lore Bard. 8 STR / 14 DEX / 15 CON / 10 INT / 12 WIS / 18 CHA
Background: Custom (Brewers Supplies, another Toolkit), and 2 Skills Level 4 Chef Feat Level 8 Telekinetic Feat
Spells 1: Healing Word, Hideous Laughter, Dissonant Whispers 2: Mirror Image, Shatter, Web, Invisibility 3: Hypnotic Pattern, Dispell, Create Food, Counterspell* 4: Polymorph, Freedom of Movement 5: Animate Objects, Cure Mass Wounds, Holy Weapon*
Do firstly playing a bard feels somewhat difficult, because I'm always in the back, out of danger. I rarely feel like I'm contributing to the fight, my turns are spent harrasing enemies with my words, psychically pushing them, or restricting movement of enemies.
In the morning I give people snacks. That give very minor benefits of temp HP. I do my best to keep allies alive by using Cutting Words to make enemies miss, and transform myself or allies into T Rex, Crabs, or Gorillas to keep them alive. I keep a low profile, appear small, fragile, not a target as my teammates take hefty beatings. I rely on them to carry me. I pick them up if they go down, and end any charms on them. So combat wise, there isn't much glory in being a bard. This bard does not do big damage, but she sustains her allies. She's been a lot of fun to play though. I've been enjoying being the chef, describing what we're cooking. My game doesn't get a lot of short rest, but Song of Rest + Chef Feat + Cooks Utensils makes an amazing short rest bard who inspires others with her food, and uses food ingredients to cast spells, such as throwing salt on someone to wake them up (Healing Word).
The most effective thing in combat I can do is turn into a Trex. Starting now though, I'll be enchanting someone else's weapon, and hiding to maintain concentration.
Character Bio Name: Rosemary — Love Grows Wherever Rosemary (Goes) Race: Tabaxi Class: Lore Bard Chef Background: Celebrity Adventurer's Scion (Customized) Chef Goals: I want to learn how to cook every dish to create the ultimate Heroes' Feast! and create a touring restaurant. To accomplish this goal, I will travel the world, hunt exotic animals, and collect rare ingredients.
Personality: I love to learn about food and ingredients from different cultures. I cannot rest until my cuisine is perfected. Nothing is ever perfect. Ideals: Culinary arts takes me to wonderful new places. Bonds: I never won an important cooking competition, but I will one day Flaws: I am jealous of anyone who can cook better than me.
Bio: Love Grows Wherever Rosemary Goes occasionally has trouble finding stable employment as a chef and is legally required to wear a specialized top half fishnets to greatly reduce the chance of her hairs from getting into the customer’s food. Born one of septuplets and being born poor, the Love Grows family had to make due with their limited resources. Rosemary had a natural love and joy for cooking, combining different ingredients, adding filler to feed her entire family. She was given a cookbook that contained recipes and advice to spice up her cooking. She served sometime working at a military kitchen to gain enough money to put herself through culinary school. Along the way she picked up a few other skills to aid her in her cooking such as Mage Hand to help multitask, prestidigitation to rapidly warm and cool food, shape water to put on a spectacle while mixing drinks. Cooking is an art and a performance.
Appearance: TBD, currently half orange, half black

2023.06.08 08:33 preytell717 Husband M36 wand divorce wife F35 after discovering he fathered a child 18 years ago

DH (36) and I (35) have been together for 20 years, and this year will mark 10 yrs of marriage. A month ago, he found out he had fathered a child with a stranger whilst we were in a break. The girl had been looking for him since 2005 to do a DNA test. I spoke to him then about the woman wanting to do a test, but he denied that she was telling the truth since she had a boyfriend. We later parted ways. However, when he returned, I asked him about potentially fathering the child, and he denied it again, and she went silent. During this time, I believe she was in a relationship, and her partner was helping raise the child, so she made no further contact. We moved on. However, in 2008, she asked again for a DNA test, this time saying he partner took DNA without her knowledge and was not the father. From what DH said, she did not provide him with the necessary details, so he dismissed the idea because it seemed as though she would only want a test if she was not in a relationship. She went radio silent again. We moved on, we travelled, got married, and bought a house, but now, in 2023, she made a Facebook post displaying a MSN photo from 2004. She didn't know his surname or address and had just a picture from his profile. We have been struggling in recent months with the new house and new job and prospect of children as I feel he is not emotionally intelligent and struggles to make the right decisions for our future without my supervision. I wanted us to seek counselling before children. However he found the post, made contact with the woman and arranged to do a DNA test in the following days and decided to come home and emotionally abused me for 6 hours stating he wanted a divorce and how bad I have been to him. Only after 6 hours did he tell me the truth and then told me that he wanted a divorce so I would not find out about the child but he didn't mean it as he loves me. I was shocked but glad it was conceived outside marriage and that the child was an 18 year old adult but angry that he lied about the girl and also turned our marriage upside down without speaking to me first. The next day I left for work he asked me if I wanted him to stay in the house and said yes however when I got to work he texted to say he was booking a hotel and and would take the test the following day and then return home. I raced back home to find him with a new shape up haircut and a freshly ironed shirt being placed in his car boot. We briefly disagreed, but he was not going to stay as he was determined to go. He came back the following day to reveal that he took the test. I felt he knew the child was his, he got a brief entail on the child's background and seemed very excited by fantasies in his head as he mentioned possibly becoming a grandparent in the next 2 years time, going to her house to celebrate milestones with her family, buying her jewellery, her coming into the home we share together for the upcoming Christmas and meeting her friends. At this point, he hadn't even heard her voice or discussed her expectations. He was very insentive, but whilst speaking on these things, he made no future plans our marriage going forward or discuss how we were going to get through this together itmif it was confirmed to be his child. At this point, I felt he had decided that I wouldn' t be part of his life going forward as he mentioned it would be to hard for me to watch him bond with his not yet confirmed daughter. He offered no comfort or reassurance that he would preserve our relationship. I cried a lot but he was not concerned. He did, however, inform his sister of the news of a potential niece however I have to mention this was not yet confirmed. 4 days later , it was confirmed, and all his worries disappeared. He returned to normal life and says we should focus on starting a family of our own - he mentioned he will not have a father and daughter relationship with the new daughter as too much time has passed, he will get to know her in very small steps if that is what she wanted. I mentioned marriage counselling however he did not seem to want to invest in this, instead he booked us a hotel in Brighton for the BH monday however I did not go as he did not want to discuss us but rather forget about the last 3 weeks. He said he wanted us to have a child together so he could be a proper father and watch the child grow, a child that resembled us and raised in our new home together. He agreed with the mother to meet the daughter 2 weeks down the line. They met, he came home and said she wanted him his life and she came across quite 'keen'. He assured me we should focus on conceiving. However, I felt he was offering a booby prize, but I could tell mentally that he was uncomfortable with something. We argued as he continued to dismiss my feelings about the way things were handled from the start - how could he reach out without speaking to me first? Out of frustration, I kicked him out because it was draining, and all this new information was too fresh for me to process. He said he felt no connection and did not love the daughter. He texted to say he was sorry and would always love me when he left, but I did not respond. We stopped communicating for 3 days. However, I was shocked that he wasn't attempting to reach out to salvage us. He texted to say he was collecting his stuff on the weekend and contacting a solicitor in the week. He kept using the fact that I kicked him out as a 'get out of jail' card. He said if it was the best for both of us to divorce, as it would not be fair on me, and he was sorry. He later left me a voice note screaming down after I asked to talk, stating that I had kicked him out and I was messing with his mental health. He said he has felt better in the days we had been apart. I don't know why I have become the villain in his movie as I have done nothing wrong. At this point, I am not sure whether the fantasies of a smooth run with his new daughter are clouding his judgement of the reality of the situation. He wants to throw his and marriage away to parent a 18 year old woman but refuse to commit as a husband. Please can someone make sense of this? Do I work on things or move on as he is coming across erratic about his feelings towards me and the situation. It seems as though because it is convenient for him now as we don't have children together after 2 misscarriages and we were arguing, he mentally removed himself from the marriage and made the decision to reach out but is now confirmed he has fathered the child he is being forced to step up which is why he is so angry at me. Almost like, if we were on good terms, he wouldn't have stepped forward. He actually blamed me for not forcing him to take the test sooner but I feel he didn't realise how much of an impact it would have on him mentally. Please share your thoughts!!!

The artists, Dr. Anthony Fleg, Mallery Quetawki (Zuni), Blythe Mariano (Diné), and Chilán Mustain, worked together to create an installation in motion, and the vision they bring to this space is from a contemporary perspective on how Native art is presented. This is an innovative view for visitors to see that Native art is changing and adjusting to the times. 2023.06.08 05:51 Determination7 An Outcast In Another World (Subtitle: Is 'Insanity' A Racial Trait?) [Fantasy, LitRPG] - Chapter 200 (Book 5 Chapter 26)

Quick Author's Note:
For better clarity of intent, the 'worthwhile opponent' stipulation in Lifedrinker is being changed to 'non-negligible opponent' moving forward.

--

"The Gellin Empress was the catalyst for our breakthrough," a mage explained. "Tracing Lord Rob's lingering mana signature through the space between dimensions proved effective at first, yet it came with an insurmountable problem: he only attained mana after initially leaving Earth. At a certain point, there was no more of a signature for us to trace. We had found his home dimension, but finding his home world within the infinite expanses of that dimension could have taken years of aimless searching, like blind men stumbling in the dark."
He leaned forward, clearly enjoying having a captive audience. "The key, then, lay within Lord Rob's memories. Even without mana, memories have a power all their own. The Empress looked within his mind and found locations of personal importance to him. Ones that he remembers with pristine clarity. By scrying for areas within Lord Rob's dimension that matched those specific locations, we were able to narrow down the scope of our search considerably."
The mage spread his palms wide, and his voice dropped a full octave, as if he was imparting a great revelation. "The result will soon be made self-evident. You shall bear witness to the foremost magical achievement of our era: a one-way viewing window into Lord Rob's world. The first of many to come."
In respect for the man's showmanship, Rob started up a clap. Granted, he would've clapped even if the explanation was done via a mindnumbing PowerPoint presentation, because nothing in the universe could stunt his enthusiasm right now. Riardin's Ranger, the Elders, Diplomacy, and the Soul Surgeon clapped as well, although Rob was pretty sure they were just following his cues. This moment couldn't possibly hold the same gravitas for them as it did for him. They mostly were here to provide moral support and satisfy their curiosity.
While for him, this meant everything.
"Do we need the Gellin Empress here to create the window?" Rob asked. "I'd also like to thank her for the help she's given."
The mage shook his head. "I'll spare you the details, but to be succinct; she taught us how to save a mana-based copy of the necessary memories, which will allow us to attune to a subset of Earth locations. Her presence is not required. In fact, she insisted that we proceed without her, as the Gellin have gone to rest for the night."
Must be nice. I'd trade ten Levels for a consistent sleep schedule. Rob internally frowned at himself, punting the envious thoughts away. No sour grapes. If the Empress helped me see Earth again, then I hope she sleeps like a baby for the rest of her life.
"One question," Keira interjected. "In your explanation, you stated that, without the Empress' assistance, it may have taken years to discover Earth. That is hardly the weeks or months you claimed in the past."
The group of dimension mages froze, embarrassment blooming on their features. They looked to the head mage for guidance, whose veneer of showmanship was deflating like a leaky balloon. "We were perhaps...optimistic."
"By years?"
"The previous estimate I put forth was one that assumed we would develop breakthroughs as we went along." His mouth widened into a sheepish grin. "As you can see, we, um, succeeded."
Keira raised an eyebrow. "Only with the timely assistance of a Leader." Her tone was calm, yet unyielding. "Rob is too grateful to point out this contradiction, so I suppose the task falls to me. You have also told us that you should be able to 'open' the window and let Rob send a letter home within the next week – is that more unfounded optimism?"
"No." The mage straightened his posture. "Now that we have located Earth, the rest is simply a matter of refining our spells and collecting reserves of mana. We are no longer blind, nor are we fumbling in the dark, and thus our progress moving forward shall be predictable and steady. This, I swear."
After a few seconds, Keira nodded. "Then I thank you for the wonderful boon you've granted to the man I love."
From behind, Malika giggled under her breath. Rob squeezed Keira's hand, gave her a warm smile, and faced the mages. "I'm ready whenever you are."
The tent thrummed with mana as the dimension mages formed a Mage Circle with Malika. It was no different from any other time they'd done so, yet the knowledge of what they were about to accomplish heightened the tension in the air to a fever pitch. Rob's pulse quickened, his throat tightening. He'd been disemboweled by monsters, decapitated by eldritch abominations, and none of those events made him a fraction as nervous as watching the dimension mages at work.
Minutes passed. Rob forced himself to be patient. Reaching across the boundaries of space and dimensions wasn't like heading to the store to pick up a carton of milk. It involved a level of spellcasting prowess that would take Rob decades of committed study to have even the slightest chance at grasping. Frankly, the fact that it was possible at all still beggared belief.
Maybe...maybe the mages were wrong. Not lying; just wrong. They could be overeager, sharing before they were actually ready, and they'd end the circle looking contrite and ashamed.
That was okay. No biggie. Rome wasn't built in a day, or...something. He could wait–
Creak.
It was the sound of a rusted hinge, of crumpling paper, of breaking bones, and more. A combination of all the noises things made when subjected to an external force. Like reality itself was groaning under the pressure.
Creeeak.
A thin, imperceptible line appeared at eye-level, dark as the endless void. Slowly, inch-by-inch, it widened.
CREEEAK.
It had become a rectangle. Two feet wide, three feet high. With a final CREAK, reality threw in the towel. The void dissipated, as if smoke blown away by a gust of wind, revealing...
Home.
Everything was as he remembered it. The same furniture with scuffed marks of wear-and-tear. The same living room where they'd watched movies each Friday. The same kitchen with a sink perpetually filled with dirty dishes. The same tacky wallpaper that his mom refused to change, and that he secretly enjoyed.
Identical. Like a portrait had been painted straight from his memories.
A tsunami of aching nostalgia surged through him. Rob didn't realize he was extending his hand until his fingertips were already brushing against the viewing window. Its surface felt solid, and for an instant he was terrified that this really was just a painting. Something invented to give him false hope.
Then he noticed that a window had been cracked open. Not the mages' window; the window inside his house. A small breeze blew inside, jostling a curtain ever so lightly. Just enough to make it move.
"It's real." Rob's voice was hoarse. "It's my home."
No one said anything. They allowed him his silence, a gesture which he greatly appreciated. Eventually, Rob took a deep breath, clenched his hands so that they wouldn't tremble, and looked at the dimension mages. "Thank you. I owe you...so much. Even if observing from afar ended up being the limit of what you could do, just seeing my house again like this is..."
He trailed off, unable to find words that were sufficient. Thankfully, the dimension mages seemed to understand. "You are most welcome, Lord Rob." The head mage smiled. "This is far from the limit of what we can do, however. Give us time, and this window shall open."
Rob nodded, choosing not to believe them. They were probably right, but on the off chance they weren't, he didn't want to look back on this moment with bitterness. Best to assume the worst and be grateful for what he already had.
As if drawn by a gravitational pull, his eyes drifted back towards the window. It was displaying a fixed point in the center of his home. "Can you switch perspectives? I want to check other rooms." His parents were likely asleep in their bedroom at this hour. Assuming they didn't sell the house out of grief and move, that is.
"I am afraid that isn't possible. We can transpose the viewing window to other specific locations that the Empress provided, but having it 'walk around', so to speak, requires finer control than we are yet capable of."
Yet, he says. Which means that with practice, they'll be able to. Rob placated himself with that notion. This was a minor setback, and he wouldn't let it get him down.
He especially wouldn't listen to that tiny voice in the back of his head, whispering that the reason he couldn't see his parents right now was because they were–
"Got it," Rob stated, in a wooden voice. "What other locations did the Empress pick out?"
The window's perspective blurred and shifted. Rob swallowed a gasp as an extremely familiar place was displayed before him. He'd seen it many, many times, even after coming to Elatra. It used to be at the top of his nightmare rotation, only ousted from its throne when Blights started coming into play.
In front of them was a small grassy lawn, surrounded by lecture halls in the near-distance. The place that had forever altered the course of his life.
"This is where it all started." Rob pointed to an empty spot in the middle of the field. "Portal opened up. Right there. Saturated with darkness. Chains shot out, tried to grab at Jason. I pushed him out of the way, and...the rest is history."
Silence reigned once more. After a few seconds, Orn'tol stirred. The young Ranger opened his mouth, preparing to say what would undoubtedly be some platitude reassuring Rob over his noble sacrifice.
"The grass truly is green."
Rob burst out laughing. He kept going until he was short of breath, wheezing as the others looked at him with eyes full of concern. "I'm okay," he managed to cough, once the laughter had died down to snickers. "Thanks, Orn'tol. I needed that."
"You're very welcome?" Orn'tol exchanged confused glances with the rest of Riardin's Rangers. "I am unsure of what I did to assist you, yet it's good to see you in high spirits nonetheless."
"Sometimes a little silliness is just what the doctor ordered." Rob offered him a high-five, which the boy accepted with zeal. They returned their gazes to the viewing window, Rob tilting his head as he peered closer. "Hmm. That's weird."
"What do you mean?"
"There's no people. It's early evening, but college students have the worst sleeping patterns on the face of the planet. Trust me; I'm speaking from experience. Usually you'd see a dozen partygoers strung out on energy drinks racing around now."
"Perhaps this location is known as a place of danger," Keira posited. "I would certainly be hesitant to tread where a portal of darkness sprang from the aether and kidnapped a civilian."
Rob watched the viewing window for signs of life, finding none. "Could be. Parents probably pulled their kids out after what happened to me. Then either the government condemns the area, or enough money is lost that the college goes bankrupt." He snorted. "Would be the least of what it deserves, considering the tuition fees. Bloodsucking vampires."
"People on Earth drink blood?"
Normally, Rob would have played along with their confusion, but there were more important things to focus on. "Can you change this to the next location from my memories?" he asked the dimension mages. "How many are there, anyway?"
"Five in total. One moment, please."
The window's perspective blurred, shifted, and reformed. Now it was displaying a city sidewalk, its view positioned right outside the best god damn burger joint in existence. Rob didn't care what anyone else said; two greasy slabs of beef squeezed between two sesame-seed buns was the absolute pinnacle of culinary delight. So what if his palette was 'like a five-year old's?' Wasn't his fault that delicious things were delicious.
Belatedly, he realized that his memory of this restaurant had been strong enough for the Gellin Empress to choose it as a point of reference for interdimensional portal magic. That...yeah, that tracked. Aside from the burgers, he had fond memories of sitting at the outside patio with Jason and his folks, drinking Minty Fresh Phantasma and inhaling cheesy fries as they mocked his dietary preferences. Good times.
He was about to explain what this place meant to him when a human casually walked past the viewing window.
She was a normal working woman like any other. Tired eyes, a purse slung over her shoulder, and dressed for lukewarm weather. A cell phone was held in her right hand, her eyes glued to some form of social media. She strode past the window without a care in the world, visible for merely a second before disappearing from view.
To the Elatrans, it was like a horror movie jumpscare. All of them froze. Several gasped. Elder Alessia grimaced. Faelynn muttered "a world of Humans" in a hushed tone. The only exceptions were Elder Duran and the Soul Surgeon, who crept closer to get a better look, their eyes shimmering with curiosity.
In contrast, Rob let out a sigh of overwhelming relief. That bored, everyday woman was exactly what he'd needed to set him at ease. Earth hasn't completely gone to shit behind my back. People are still living their lives.
As he watched, a few more humans walked in front of the window. A middle-aged man, a young boy with his mother, and an old woman with a walking cane. The old woman pivoted straight into the burger joint, Rob internally praising her good taste.
"W-well," the head mage stuttered. He paused, cleared his throat, then started anew. "As you can see, the viewing window is imperceptible to those with low Levels of Sense Mana. Naturally, this will not be the case for a portal that can be interacted with from both sides."
"Dangerous," Meyneth commented. "I would advise that you conceal this type of spell for as long as you are able. The viewing window especially."
"Why is that?"
"If this window cannot be sensed by those with low Levels of Sense Mana, then that makes it an ideal tool for spying on non-Mages. In your haste to glimpse into the world of another dimension, you have inadvertently developed a field of magic that puts every nation in Elatra at risk of subterfuge. People have been assassinated for much less."
The mages blanched. "We are nothing more than simple researchers," the head mage protested, in a faltering voice. "Who besides a madwoman like the Dragon Queen would stoop so low as to threaten noncombatants?"
Keira averted her eyes, pointedly examining the floor.
"We can discuss matters of life and death at a later time," Duran interjected. He gestured to the viewing window with the demeanor of a child in a toy story. "There's a world of discoveries to explore! Take a look at those structures the Earth Humans have built – they resemble the buildings within Human territory, yet small differences set them apart."
Duran ooooh'd as another person walked past the viewing window. "So many humans are ambling about despite the late hour. Is this area a well-traveled location in your home city, Rob?"
"This is around the level of street traffic you should expect for early evening. If it were daytime, you'd see a hundred people per minute."
Duran aaaah'd. Before he could launch into a series of questions, Zamira beat him to it. "Pardon me if this comes across as an insult," she began, hesitantly. "But Earth Humans appear marginally...uncoordinated. It is hard for me to describe the notion, yet when I watch them move, they appear as if they're liable to fall over at any moment."
They look normal to me, Rob almost said, before remembering that Earth's normal wasn't Elatra's normal. "That's called being permanently Level 1." He shrugged. "They've all got crap stats. Except athletes, I guess."
Zamira stared at the human passerby with obvious sympathy. "My condolences."
Does Earth seem like a world of cripples to her? Rob wondered. Even Utility Class users have the option to put a couple points into Dexterity and Perception. That's not counting the natural stat boosts they gain as they grow up, either. And when combined with Vitality and healing magic, it means that people in Elatra tend to age gracefully.
Rob tried to think of the last time he'd seen an Elatran with the same frailty as that old human woman with her walking cane. The oldest person he'd met so far was the Fiend High Soulseer, and in spite of being positively ancient – and blind – the dude could get around fine. Elder Duran was having health problems, but that was only after suffering from severe Corruption poisoning for weeks on end. An incident like that would've landed an Earth human in long-term hospice care.
Actually, no, that was wrong. It would've just killed them.
"We should switch to the next location," Rob said, preempting any further questions. "There's still two more left." Maybe I can see...no. Keep your expectations in check.
He was right to do so. Rob's heart sank as the viewing window solidified once again, revealing battered, empty streets. Half the buildings had collapsed to rubble, as if visited by a wrecking crew with an axe to grind. He recognized this spot as the street leading up to his favorite movie theater on the other side of the city. There'd been good times here, as well.
Although not anymore. The theater's roof had caved in, and half the letters in its ostentatious PRIME CINEMA logo were missing. It would take years to rebuild – assuming someone was willing to invest millions of dollars into what was essentially a ghost town.
"This..." He ran his hand down his face, aware of everyone gazing at him with pity. "As you can probably infer, this isn't normal. In the past–"
Bang.
Rob practically jumped out of his skin at the abrupt sound of gunfire. At first he thought the shot had come from outside, but no, it was both too distant and too close for that. The noise also sounded different from the rifles that the Dwarven Thunder Rod wielders employed.
A series of repeated bangs swept his thoughts away. Everyone watched in astonishment as a crew of Earth military soldiers ran into view from a side street, desperately fleeing the eight-legged Blightspawn that was hot on their tails. The abomination was more of an amalgamation of flesh and limbs than anything resembling a living creature, and the way it skittered made Rob reconsider if spiders were really that bad in comparison.
"Keep firing!" one of the men commanded, his voice sounding like it was coming from the bottom of a lake. The soldiers blasted their assault rifles in a retreating offensive, peppering the abomination with a hailstorm of bullets. Their response was swift, their aim was true, and it did not matter. The Blightspawn bulldozed through the rain of bullets as if it was a light drizzle, the creature's five cavernous mouths wailing for blood and sustenance.
It was nearly upon them when an explosive rocketed in from the opposite side street, knocking the Blightspawn off its many feet. The reprieve was temporary, but it was just long enough for the soldiers to escape unharmed. Unfortunately, the creature was also mostly unharmed, sporting minor injuries despite a direct missile strike to the torso. With a chorus of screams that prickled Rob's ears, the abomination continued its chase, batting away a second missile as it resumed the chase with renewed fervor.
Then it was gone, having left the window's range of sight. Distant sounds of battle grew quieter, the gunshots and explosions becoming more faint as predator and prey ran deeper into the ruined city.
Rob closed his eyes. He said nothing for half a minute, allowing himself time to process what he'd seen.
"Okay." He opened his eyes, nodding. "This is fine."
Keira laid a hand on his shoulder, struggling with what to say. "Rob...you don't need to–"
"Hold it in? Bottle up my emotions?" A wry chuckle escaped his throat. "Honestly, I'm not as affected as I thought I'd be. The Blight dropped one too many cryptic hints for me to be surprised, anyway. At this point I'm just glad that Earth hasn't been completely overrun. Some parts of the city might be fucked up, but not all of it is."
He narrowed his eyes. "The biggest thing I'm worried about is the Blightspawn itself. You saw those weapons the humans were using, right? Think of them as substantially upgraded versions of the Thunder Rods. They should've put a real dent in a fully-grown Blight, let alone one of its spawn."
"Perhaps the creatures have gained a defensive Skill?" Duran theorized. "What we witnessed appears consistent with other damage reduction Skills such as Tough Skin or Heat Resistance. I would surmise that the Blight has learned something akin to – for example – Thunder Rod Resistance."
Rob paused. Elatra didn't have a specified 'Bullet Resistance' Skill, but that was because conventional firearms had been removed from the system for balancing purposes. The Blight wouldn't give two shits about balance. They'd cheerfully grant themselves Bullet Resistance, Missile Resistance, and whatever else tickled their fancy.
And the more Earth fought back, the more resistant they'd become.
"...This doesn't change anything," Rob eventually concluded. "Earth is a big boy planet. It'll figure something out. In the meantime, we'll clean up our problems here and be ready to help if the Blight's still around by then."
"You're sure?" Keira asked. Two words that held so much intent. 'Are you sure you'll be alright? Are you sure Elatra should remain your primary concern? Are you sure you don't want to head home the instant the dimension mages create a working portal?'
Rob gave her a thumbs-up. "I'm sure. And I know you'll worry about me regardless, but I promise I'm feeling fine."
Or maybe he was just numb, and an avalanche of emotions would bury him when he least expected it. The good news was that was a problem for future-Rob to deal with. Present-Rob had one last area to investigate.
I'd be satisfied with seeing my old bedroom intact, he thought, as the dimension mages altered the viewing window for the last time. I have strong memories there, right? It should be a candidate. Those late night Netflix binges were uh...riveting. Yeah.
The window finalized.
Rob felt the strength leave his body.
Some parts of what he was seeing were incongruous. Strange details that he'd need to figure out soon. All of it took a hard backseat to the one sight in the room that truly mattered.
Jason was alive.
He was at his house that Rob had visited so often. Alive. Surrounded by people. Alive. Chatting away. Alive. Gesturing in that exaggerated manner he often used. Alive.
Smiling.
Alive.
A dam broke. Silent tears began streaming down Rob's face. Thoughts cut out, leaving only the realization that his best friend since childhood, the sole person he'd have trusted with his life before meeting Riardin's Rangers, the man whose place he'd taken when the gods picked a new chew toy...
Was alive.
"Hey, man." Rob's smile was the most genuine it had been in a long time. "Been a while."
At that moment, almost as if he could hear him, Jason grinned.

--

Author's Note:
When I was writing Chapter 199, I was mildly annoyed that Rob didn't reach 200 Vitality on Chapter 200. That would've been hilariously coincidental. But if I had to choose between that chapter or this one for a big milestone...I think I like this better.
Happy Chapter 200, everyone. Thanks for reading and staying on this journey with me.

50 Most Expensive Cars In The World
From Aston Martin to Zenvo, these are the most expensive supercars and hypercars ever made.

When it comes to high-end hypercars and super-fast supercars, a few companies should come to mind first: Bugatti, Ferrari, Koenigsegg, Rimac, and Pagani, among others. These manufacturers have cemented themselves as the top dogs in the supercar and hypercar space, extending to their wealthiest clientele the fastest, rarest, prettiest – and in this case – most expensive cars on the planet.

But in order to find out which of these unattainable-to-most vehicles is the priciest, we've scoured the invoice sheets and uncovered 50 cars all worth $1 million or more. The group includes hybrid Ferrari convertibles, an American speed king, a few electric Hypercars, and two a one-of-a-kind Rolls-Royce cars built for royalty.

We should note, though: The prices listed here are the price of the vehicles when new. So we’re not counting auction cars like the Ferrari 250 GTO, or overpriced secondhand sales. But don’t worry, there’s still hundreds of millions worth of cars here to whet your appetite.

De Tomaso P72
Price: $1.3 Million

https://preview.redd.it/mjblep6rhp4b1.png?width=792&format=png&auto=webp&s=149247570ee682082950e1787e40083e24f57051
The De Tomaso P72 is basically the definition of beautiful. The shapely supercar debuted at the 2019 Goodwood Festival Of Speed with a supercharged Ford V8 boasting 700 horsepower. The P72 marked the return of the DeTomaso brand after nearly 30 years on hiatus, and if you want one, it will cost you at least $1.3 million.

Ferrari LaFerrari
Price: $1.4 Million

https://preview.redd.it/t4kl320thp4b1.png?width=757&format=png&auto=webp&s=9d2282fd95775dc58d6118391242ed90517c6034
At $1.4 million new, the Ferrari LaFerrari is actually one of the most affordable supercars on this list. It’s a bargain compared to the most expensive vehicle here. Debuting in 2013 with 950 hybrid horses (708 kilowatts) and a top speed of around 220 miles per hour (354 kilometers per hour), this is still Ferrari’s fastest and most powerful production model to date. The company built just 499 examples of the coupe between 2013 and 2016.

Pagani Huayra
Price: $1.4 Million

https://preview.redd.it/xf170icwhp4b1.png?width=767&format=png&auto=webp&s=28006f844a123d2cc340c1a2bb3a9386e620156d
Inarguably one of the prettiest cars on this list, the Pagani Huayra cost a cool $1.4 million when new. Like the LaFerrari, Pagani built the Huayra in extremely limited numbers. The company hand-constructed just 100 units of the coupe between 2012 and 2018, with another 20 versions of the BC model (which makes our list further down) between 2017 and 2019. Powering each and every example was a Mercedes-AMG V12 capable of 720 horsepower (537 kilowatts).

McLaren Elva
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/u1pszk9zhp4b1.png?width=752&format=png&auto=webp&s=2deeae7d004708695939b260d6154cc765ac75fc
The McLaren Elva is one of the latest additions to the British supercar maker’s storied legacy. Even without a proper windshield (though, no option) or roof to rely on, the Elva produces 804 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. Originally McLaren announced just 399 units, but later the company dropped that to an even more scarce 249 examples. Either way, most of you will never get your hands on one – the Elva costs $1.7 million.

Czinger 21C
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/nfw8pcp0ip4b1.png?width=725&format=png&auto=webp&s=4153021794d8da48eb2f4f72ef891bf4abd043d9
You might not know the name Czinger yet, but this California-based boutique automaker is responsible for the $1.7 million 21C supercar. With 1,250 horsepower on tap thanks to a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8, the 21C can rocket to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of around 281 miles per hour.

Ferrari Monza
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/94veko45ip4b1.png?width=751&format=png&auto=webp&s=ee2d70f541a084d60b4b7f5911ac7c40ba75f392
Much like the roof-less McLaren Elva, the Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 are all about al fresco motoring. As the name implies, the SP1 is the single-seater option while the SP2 has just enough room for you to bring along a friend. Both cars come powered by the same naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine capable of 809 horsepower and 530 pound-feet. Unfortunately for US buyers, neither of these models are street legal in the States. But f you have the funds to afford the car’s $1.75 million price tag, getting onto a track probably won’t be an issue anyway.

Gordon Murray T.33
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/eqnwdeyaip4b1.png?width=750&format=png&auto=webp&s=6c1264bd773b87e84aaa1ab5a47bb3948cdab877
The second and slightly more affordable supercar in the new Gordon Murray lineup is the T.33. With 607 horsepower courtesy of a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V12, the T.33 revs to a ridiculous 10,500 RPM. With a price tag of around $1.7 million at current conversion rates, Gordon Murray automotive promises to sell this car globally, in both right- and left-hand-drive configurations. Too bad it's already sold out.

Koenigsegg Gemera
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/t8kr9umcip4b1.png?width=716&format=png&auto=webp&s=b08f32b152e3ada414fdbe0bb2548a9202d710f1
One of two Koenigsegg models on this list, the Gemera is actually the Swedish supercar maker’s first four-seater. But that doesn’t mean it’s some family car. With a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter engine under the hood and three electric motors, the Gemera has 1,700 horsepower and will hit 60 in just 1.9 seconds. The company only plans to build 300 of them, each one costing at least $1.7 million.

Zenvo TSR-S
Price: $1.7 Million

https://preview.redd.it/zibamv9fip4b1.png?width=719&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0a61769b3592745b135a63d75e3cae2091fdb9e
Hailing from Denmark, the Zenvo TSR-S debuted in 2018 at the Geneva Motor Show as the most extreme option in the supercar startup’s repertoire. Boasting a twin-charged 5.8-liter V8 engine, the TSR-S produces 1,177 horsepower and will hit 62 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds. Expect to pay at least $1.7 million to get your hands on this powerful and limited supercar.

Hennessey Venom F5
Price: $1.8 Million

https://preview.redd.it/z4t9h6rgip4b1.png?width=729&format=png&auto=webp&s=045e4293fbebbce15713f030ddc7337121df771b
The Hennessey Venom GT was a record-breaker, topping out at 265.7 miles per hour in a world record run. But the new F5 plans to beat its predecessor with an estimated top speed of 311 mph, and with that comes a higher price, too. The Venom F5 starts at $1.8 million, according to the company, which makes it just a bit pricier than its $1.2-million predecessor.

Bentley Bacalar
Price: $1.9 Million

https://preview.redd.it/eg198abjip4b1.png?width=741&format=png&auto=webp&s=4e74bd713fab000673d741fe8b72b20b6b80a91f
With just 12 total units produced, the Bentley Bacalar makes some of the "limited" cars on this list look plentiful by comparison. Although the car’s opulent design may be the first thing to grab your attention, the Bacalar is no slouch in terms of performance either. With Bentley’s signature turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 turbocharged engine, this car delivers 650 horsepower and 664 pound-feet. If you have a spare $1.9 million lying around and are considering buying one, you’re already too late – Bentley says that every example is now in customer hands.

Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne
Price: $1.9 Million

https://preview.redd.it/29pz2mukip4b1.png?width=733&format=png&auto=webp&s=32d49b6722dc434b125827bf432cc8b1c4f98e9b
To call the Hispano Suiza Carmen Boulogne beautiful would be... a stretch. But this interesting-looking supercar made its US debut at this year's Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance boasting a 1,114-horsepower electric powertrain and a 0-60 time of 2.6 seconds. The Boulogne version pictured here – the lighter and more powerful of the two – costs close to $1.9 million.

Bentley Mulliner Batur
Price: $2.0 Million

https://preview.redd.it/ejs2msmnip4b1.png?width=741&format=png&auto=webp&s=6fb981efa05ddb8d6c659b5f92e3f456491bd587
The electric onslaught is coming. Bentley says it will be a fully electric automaker by 2030. But before the luxury brand transitions to battery power fully, the Mulliner Batur helps send the iconic W12 engine off in style. With 710 horsepower from that twin-turbocharged engine, the Batur is the most powerful Bentley ever. And since it's limited to just 18 examples globally, the Batur costs a whopping $2.0 million.

Deus Vayanne
Price: $2.0 Million

https://preview.redd.it/fyi22i5pip4b1.png?width=701&format=png&auto=webp&s=82912cd2d17db05bd95226b0c7c7ebbf9e18779a
The Deus Vayanne may not be a household name (yet), but the all-electric hypercar debuted earlier this year with 2,200 horsepower, a 0-60 time of just under 2.0 seconds, and an estimated top speed of 248 miles per hour. Deus plans to build 99 examples of the Vayanne, with the first few examples scheduled to go on sale in 2025.

SSC Tuatara
Price: $2.0 Million*

https://preview.redd.it/7zgzhptrip4b1.png?width=691&format=png&auto=webp&s=3e9120a40cdc3b632d111a9a5f2e319fe8cb80a9
Although initially cloaked in controversy, SSC did manage to hit 282.9 miles per hour with its Tuatara hypercar, breaking a world record. But not only is the Tuatara one of the fastest vehicles on the planet, it’s also one of the priciest. The cost for all that speed is estimated to be around $2.0 million for the base Tuatara, limited to just 100 units worldwide.

Lotus Evija
Price: $2.1 Million

https://preview.redd.it/u7dfyfktip4b1.png?width=747&format=png&auto=webp&s=7776ac62b93857b837349a32d4ad53f8ee039f03
With a new Emira sports car and an Eletre electric SUV, Lotus is on the brink of a comeback. The automaker plans to roll out a number of new products within the next few years, with part of that strategy including the range-topping Evija. This supercar comes in at a cool $2.1 million and produces nearly 2,000 horsepower via four electric motors. Lotus plans to build just 130 road-going examples of the Evija.

Aston Martin Vulcan
Price: $2.3 Million

https://preview.redd.it/72pt3tuwip4b1.png?width=722&format=png&auto=webp&s=d072fdedce7c750383bb869098d8a084c63b78a8
As with a few other cars on this list, the Aston Martin Vulcan was a track-only special. The British supercar made its world debut in 2015, powered by a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V12 that produced 820 horsepower, and limited to just 24 examples worldwide. An even more track-focused AMR Pro model followed, but even the base Vulcan was a pricey commodity, costing about $2.4-million from the factory.

Delage D12
Price: $2.3 Million

https://preview.redd.it/hund9f6zip4b1.png?width=735&format=png&auto=webp&s=ea7d67259c6737bc321ca5d947870da4a46d5db4
You may have heard of Delage before. In the early 1900s, this French automaker was competing on the track with Bugatti and Ferrari. Now Delage is back and with a beautiful new hypercar dubbed the D12. Powered by a 7.6-liter V12 engine, the new D12 produces upwards of 1,010 horsepower and costs a cool $2.3 million.

McLaren Speedtail
Price: $2.3 Million

What would you pay for the fastest production McLaren ever? Well, at least $2.3 million. With 1,035 horsepower courtesy of a gasoline-electric hybrid V8 powertrain, the Speedtail tops out at 250 miles per hour and is able to reach 186 mph in just 12.8 seconds – 2.7 seconds faster than the P1. Unfortunately, if you didn't get your hands on one new in 2020, you'll have to shell out serious cash on the used market. McLaren only built 106 examples.

Rimac Nevera
Price: $2.4 Million

The Rimac Nevera takes the title of most expensive EV with its $2.4 million price tag – but only by a few hundred thousand dollars over the next priciest electric supercar. Packing 1,914 horsepower and 1,740 pound-feet of torque, the Nevera can hit 60 in under 2.0 seconds and will continue on to a top speed of 258 miles per hour. Those lucky enough to order one should see it in their driveway before the end of 2022.

Pagani Utopia
Price: $2.5 Million

First came the Zonda, then the Huayra, and now the Pagani Utopia. With 852 horsepower and an available seven-speed manual gearbox, the Utopia is the most powerful road-going Pagani ever produced and it’s limited to just 99 examples worldwide. The cost for one is a cool $2.5 million.

Pininfarina Battista
Price: $2.5 Million

Aptly named after the company’s founder, Battista Farina, the Pininfarina Battista delivers the kind of performance (and price!) to make its namesake proud. Revealed at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, the Battista is completely electric, putting out 1,827 horsepower. If a normal supercar’s 0 to 60 time sounds too leisurely for you, the company says that the Battista will take you there in under 2.0 seconds. Pininfarina plans on building 150 examples of the Battista, costing $2.5 million each.

Ferrari FXX K Evo
Price: $2.6 Million

Sure, you could buy a normal LaFerrari (which also makes the list further down), but why settle for a supercar so mundane when you can take home this track-only version instead? Granted, the Ferrari FXX K Evo came out in 2017, and it's well past the point of being sold out. But when it was new, this 1,036-horsepower Ferrari tore up the track with its naturally aspirated V12 and aggressive aerodynamics.

Gordon Murray T.50
Price: $2.6 Million

If the name Gordon Murray sounds familiar, it’s because he's the man behind the design of the iconic McLaren F1. These days, Mr. Murray has his own supercar venture, and the handsome T.50 is the crown jewel of the lineup. At $2.6 million, the T.50 packs a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter V12 that makes 654 horsepower. The car itself weighs a mere 2,174 pounds, and at 392 pounds, the T.50 has the lightest V12 on the road today.

Lamborghini Countach
Price: $2.6 Million

The name Countach may be iconic, but is it worth $2.6 million? That's what Lamborghini hopes you will spend on its new Aventador-based model. Debuting in August of 2021, the Countach LPI 800-4 has a 6.5-liter V12 with a light hybrid assist that gives it a whopping 803 horsepower, allowing for a 60 time of 2.8 seconds and a top speed of more than 220 miles per hour.

Mercedes-AMG Project One
Price: $2.7 Million

Mercedes has promised a production version of the Project One hypercar for quite a while now. The first official announcement was in March of 2017 before the first concept debuted later that same year. But after nearly five years of teasing, it appears as if the Project One will finally hit public roads. And when it does, the hybrid hypercar will have over 1,200 horsepower (895 kilowatts) and a price tag of $2.7 million.

Aston Martin Victor
Price: $3.0 Million

The folks at Aston Martin know a thing or two about exclusive vehicles, and the Victor might be the most exclusive project for the British brand to date. Based on the One-77 platform, the Victor uses parts from several donor Astons including the track project Vulcan and the upcoming Valkyrie. And talking about limited production – the Victor is one-of-one and rumored to cost nearly $3 million.

Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster
$3.0 Million

The same Hennessey Venom F5 hypercar we all know and love, but with less roof. The F5 Roadster has the same twin-turbocharged 6.6-liter V8 as the coupe, producing the same 1,817 horsepower and 1,193 pound-feet of torque. Hennessey estimates a top speed of over 300 miles per hour, but if you want one, it will cost you at least $3.0 million.

Koenigsegg Jesko
Price: $3.0 Million

The Koenigsegg Jesko, apart from being the fastest car the company has made to date, is also the most expensive. At $3.0 million out of the box, the handsome hypercar has 1,600-horsepower courtesy of the brand's ubiquitous twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 engine. Opt for the Absolut model, and the Jesko, in theory, will be able to hit 300 miles per hour.

Aston Martin Valkyrie
Price: $3.2 Million

The upcoming Aston Martin hybrid hypercar hasn’t even hit the market yet, but already the $3.2 million Valkyrie has sold out. For what it’s worth, Aston Martin hasn’t officially released pricing. Estimates suggest the hypercar could go for anywhere between $2.6 and $3.9 million – but $3.2 million seems to be the magic number. Whatever the case, this machine is impressive. Its Cosworth-sourced 6.5-liter V12 produces 1,160 horsepower (865 kilowatts) and 664 pound-feet (900 Newton-meters) of torque, meaning its top speed should be well over 200 miles per hour (321 kilometers per hour). The company will build just 150 examples of the standard Valkyrie, with a limited 25-run AMR model arriving later.

W Motors Lykan Hypersport
Price: $3.4 Million

Dubai-based W Motors shocked the world with its edgy Lykan Hypersport supercar in 2013. With titanium LED headlights housing 420 15-carat diamonds and a holographic display in the center console, it's no surprise it was the third most expensive car ever when new. It falls to number six on our list here, but it's still a wild hypercar with a powerful heart; the twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine underhood produces 780 horsepower (581 kilowatts) and 708 (960 Newton-meters) of torque.

McLaren Solus
$3.5 Million

One seat, 829 horsepower, and a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. The new McLaren Solus is about as close as you can get to a Formula 1 car from the factory, powered by a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine with a 0-62 mile-per-hour time of just 2.5 seconds. Estimates suggest a McLaren Solus will set you back about $3.5 million.

Pagani Huayra Roadster BC
Price: $3.5 Million

Following Pagani’s past playbook, a roadster version of the ferocious Huayra BC was inevitable. Last year, the company made it official by showing off the Huayra Roadster BC, a topless monster with 800 horsepower (597 kilowatts) and 774 lb-ft of torque (1049 Newton-meters). Somewhat surprisingly, Pagani gave the roadster 50 more horsepower than its coupe sibling, by cranking up its AMG-sourced twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12. In addition to the joy of hearing the glorious engine note without a roof in the way, owners should take comfort in knowing that their car is ultra-rare. Pagani is limiting production to just 40 units, each with a sticker price of $3.5 million.

Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport
Price: $3.6 Million

Another showstopper from the Geneva Motor Show that never was, the Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport is a special edition Chiron with a focus on aerodynamics, weight reduction, and power distribution. It’s the same 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine underneath the skin but it’s now mated to a recalibrated automatic gearbox. While the peak output remains unchanged at 1,500 horsepower (1,103 kilowatts), the rpm redline has been set 200 rpm higher, up to 6,900 rpm. The Pur Sport also features slightly revised bodywork, with a bigger rear wing and more aerodynamic front fascia. Beginning production in late 2020, the Bugatti starts at $3.6 million.

Lamborghini Sian
Price: $3.6 million

In several ways, the Sian represents a bridge to Lamborghini’s future. Though it’s based on the Aventador SVJ, this wild-looking Lambo is the brand’s first production electrified offering. In addition to the SVJ-sourced 6.5-liter V12, the Sian uses a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Total system output is 819 horsepower (611 kilowatts), which also makes it the most powerful Lamborghini ever. As confirmed by the 63 stuck on either side of the Sian’s wing, Lamborghini will produce just 63 units. And each will cost far more than the Aventador SVJ, carrying a price of $3.6 million.

Koenigsegg CC850
Price: $3.7 Million

The Koenigsegg CC850 was a surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one. Borrowing the twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V8 from the Jesko, it notches that output up to 1,385 horsepower and 1,022 pound-feet of torque, with a so-called “TWMPAFMPC” transmission that shifts (pun intended) between manual and automatic functions. Of course, all that performance technology will cost you; the CC850 starts at $3.7 million.

Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+
Price: $3.9 Million

Earlier this year, Bugatti captured the collective attention of the automotive world by announcing that it broke the 300 miles per hour barrier with a modified version of the Chiron. The Super Sport 300 + is a road-going version of that car, meant to celebrate the occasion. Limited to just 30 units, the Super Sport 300+ is a beautiful version of the Chiron, with flowing, slippery bodywork and a sweet stripe motif. Despite having hit 304.8 mph on the track with a production vehicle, Bugatti does limit its Chiron 300+ to 273 mph in top speed mode.

Lamborghini Veneno
Price: $4.5 Million

Lamborghini built just 14 examples of the Aventador-based Veneno between 2014 and 2015. Each one cost around $4.5 million, depending on how it was spec'd, and was available in both convertible and coupe configurations. Underhood Lamborghini fitted a more-powerful iteration of the Aventador's 6.5-liter V12, now producing 740 horsepower (552 kilowatts) and 509 pound-feet (609 Newton-meters) of torque, which gave it the ability to sprint to 60 miles per hour (96 kilometers per hour) in a blistering 2.9 seconds. To date, it’s the most expensive new Lamborghini ever.

Bugatti Bolide
Price: $4.7 Million

Produced in extremely limited numbers atop the body of a Chiron, it's no wonder Bugatti's one-of-40 Bolide track car is this pricey. At $4.7 million, the 1,824-horsepower hypercar has more power than the Chiron Super Sport 300+, and more extreme bodywork that allow it to lap tracks like the Nurburgring in record time (in theory). Bugatti says the Bolide would be able to conquer the ‘Ring in record time.

Bugatti Mistral
Price: $5.0 Million

The Bugatti Mistral sends the iconic W16 engine off in style. With 1,577 horsepower and no roof, the Mistral takes the best bits of the Chiron and borrows elements from the Bolide and Divo to create a truly unique roadster. Of course, Bugatti plans to build just 99 examples of the Mistral at the cost of around $5.0 million in the US – and all of them are already accounted for.

Pagani Huayra Imola
Price: $5.4 Million

Even though the new Utopia marks the next big step for Pagani, the Huayra Imola packs nearly as much power with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 827 horsepower and 811 pound-feet of torque. The Huayra Imola is estimated to cost around $5.4 million new, which would make it the second most expensive Pagani of all time.

Bugatti Divo
Price: $5.8 Million

Among Bugatti’s recently debuted vehicles, the Divo is a staff favorite. Though it shares much in common with its cheaper (!) sibling the Chiron, the Divo has a lot going for it to justify the extra money. By adding lighter wheels, a carbon fiber intercooler and removing some sound deadening, Bugatti made the Divo 77 pounds lighter than the Chiron. Though power is unchanged from the Chiron’s 1,500 ponies (1,119 kilowatts), The Divo features a different aerodynamic setup, which makes it 8 seconds quicker around the Nardo test track. Finally, the moment you’ve been waiting for: Bugatti is making 40 examples of the car, each costing $5.8 million.

SP Automotive Chaos
Price: $6.4 Million

SP Automotive (short for Spyros Panopoulos) is a new name in the world of hypercars, but the brand's 2,000-horsepower, $6.4-million, aptly named Chaos has already made an impact. With a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V10, the base SP Automotive Chaos is one of the most expensive cars on this list – beating out many Lambos and Bugattis – but there's an even pricier version of this car that costs an eye-watering $14.4 million. That version reportedly packs 3,000 hp.

Pagani Codalunga
Price: $7.4 Million

The long list of pricey (new) Paganis ends with the Codualunga. Inspired by 1960s Italian coachbuilding, the stunning exterior and steampunk-esque interior – while equally stunning – are only part of what makes this Pagani so pricey. Under the hood is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 producing 829 horsepower and 809 pound-feet of torque, paired to a seven-speed sequential transmission for a real race-car–like feel. The cost for this one-of-five Pagani is $7.4 million.

Mercedes-Maybach Exelero
Price: $8.0 Million

Like many others before it, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach Exelero is a one-off. Commissioned by Fulda, a German subsidiary of Goodyear, to test its new tires, the Exlero debuted in 2004. Mercedes built the Exelero on the bones of a Maybach, and gave it the same twin-turbo V12 engine producing 690 horsepower (510 kilowatts) and 752 pound-feet (1,020 Newton-meters) of torque. Top speed is listed at 218 miles per hour (350 kilometers per hour) and adjusted for inflation, the Exelero would cost more than $10 million in today's money.

Bugatti Centodieci
Price: $9.0 Million

Bugatti debuted the Centodieci at last year’s Pebble Beach car week, showing off yet another ultra-rare, super-expensive model to the world. Limited to just 10 – dieci – units, the car is a modern throwback to the Bugatti EB110. At the same time, it’s meant to celebrate Bugatti’s momentous 110-year anniversary. Its unique styling cues won’t make everyone fall in love, but at least you won’t have to worry about seeing another one on the road. Carrying a price just shy of $9 million, the Centodiece is one of the most exclusive cars ever made.

Bugatti Chiron Profilée
Price: $10.8 Million

While it may not look that different from a normal Chiron, the Profilée is quite literally one-of-a-kind. Bugatti built it initially as a test for a limited run of Profilée models, but this Chiron ended up being the only example. Boasting the same 1,476-horsepower quad-turbocharged W16 engine ubiquitous throughout the Chiron range, the Profilée has unique bodywork and a custom spoiler that helps separate it from the rest of the range.

Rolls-Royce Sweptail
Price: $12.8 Million

Rolls-Royce, expectedly, takes two of the top three spots on this list, with the stunning Sweptail one-off from 2017 coming in at number three. With a monumental price tag of $13.0 million, it was, at the time of its debut, the most expensive new car ever. It's been outpriced since then, but the 453-horsepower luxury car is still a jaw-dropper.

Bugatti La Voiture Noire
Price: $13.4 Million

With a price tag of $13.4 million, the one-off Bugatti La Voiture Noire is officially the most expensive new Bugatti ever made. And understandably so. A modern interpretation of Jean Bugatti's personal Type 57 SC Atlantic, the La Voiture Noire uses the same quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine as the Chiron, producing 1,479 horsepower. It has six – that's right, six exhaust tips, radical new wheels, an aggressive, bespoke fascia, and a gigantic light-up badge in the rear that spells out the name of the brand. Of course, this one-of-one Bugatti already has a home.

Rolls-Royce Boat Tail*
Price: $28.0 Million (est.)

Rolls-Royce is back in the business of coachbuilding with the gorgeous new Boat Tail. A successor to the stunning Sweptail from 2017 – which itself cost a reported $12.8 million – the Boat Tail has a unique two-tone exterior, custom high-end finishes inside, and even a "hosting suite" complete with a champagne fridge and built-in sun umbrella. Although Rolls-Royce doesn’t officially announce pricing for one-off builds such as this, rumor has it that the Boat Tail cost a whopping $28.0 million new.

2023.06.08 02:41 lechatheureux The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 3 (The Kingdoms of Tsaparang, Taishigang and Khotesh)

Please check part 1 and 2 for context.
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 1 (Overview and The Gods) : worldbuilding (reddit.com)
The Tonpa Kingdoms Part 2 (The Kingdoms of Jangshun and Monyul) : worldbuilding (reddit.com)
Tsaparang
Tsaparang is a Kingdom to the east of the other Tonpa Kingdoms, it is marked by thick jungles and winding rivers, a small number of mountains dot the landscape to the west, on the border with Jangshun and Monyul.
The jungles of Tsaparang are known for their dense vegetation and towering trees, with rivers that cut through the landscape and create a network of waterways. The jungle clearings are dotted with small villages, where the people of Tsaparang live and work in harmony with nature.
The people of Tsaparang have learned to live with the challenges of the jungle environment, including the risk of flooding during the rainy season and the dangers posed by wild animals. Despite these challenges, the jungle provides a wealth of resources for the people, including medicinal plants, exotic fruits, and valuable timber. The villagers have developed their own unique way of life, with a deep respect for the natural world and a strong sense of community. They work together to maintain their homes and farms, and to protect the jungle from outsiders who might seek to exploit its resources.
The kingdom of Tsaparang was founded by a legendary warrior king named Raja Dhananj, who converted to Tonpa and united several smaller kingdoms in the area left over from the Indraprastha Empire under his rule, he named it after a fortress city on the border of Monyul that was essential to his victory, he eventually built a grand capital city on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, which he named after himself – Dhananjpur.
The city is a bustling center of trade and commerce, and soon became known throughout the region for its wealth and prosperity. Over time, Dhananjpur grew into a magnificent city, with grand palaces, beautiful temples, and bustling markets, the most famous of which is the floating markets called Jalbazaar.
Jalbazaar is situated on the banks of the Brahmaputra River, which flows through the heart of the district. The district is famous for its bustling waterways, where vendors sell their wares from boats and barges that are moored along the riverbank. The floating markets of Jalbazaar are a riot of color and activity, with vendors hawking their wares to eager customers. The markets sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to handicrafts and textiles. The markets are busiest in the early morning, when fishermen bring in their catch from the river and vendors begin setting up their stalls. The air is filled with the smells of spices, cooking food, and fresh flowers, creating a heady atmosphere that is unique to Jalbazaar. Visitors to the floating markets can sample a wide variety of local delicacies, including steaming bowls of spicy fish curry, crispy fritters made from lentils and vegetables, and sweet desserts made from coconut and mango.
To the west of Dannajpur lies the village of Pashupati, the village sits on the edge of a dense jungle, its thatched-roof houses built on stilts to protect them from flooding during the monsoon season. At the center of the village is an ancient temple dedicated to the Dharmist God Pashupati, said to have been built by a powerful Thakur long ago. However, the temple has fallen into disrepair over the centuries, and now it is overrun with large cats, both tame and wild. The villagers believe that the cats are the guardians of the temple, and they feed and care for them as best they can. Some of the cats are even considered sacred, and are allowed to roam freely throughout the village. Despite the presence of the cats and the fact that the villagers abandoned Dharmism for Tonpa over a hundred years ago, the temple is still an important place of for the villagers, the temple's crumbling walls are adorned with faded murals depicting scenes from ancient legends and there is a sense of mystery and magic that pervades the place. Outsiders aren't rare in the village as it sits along an important road between two cities, but the villagers are wary of strangers who do not respect the cats, the temple or their ancient ways. However, they are hospitable and generous to those who show the cats respect and kindness.
The second most populous city in Tsaparang is called Serindia, it is nestled in the heart of a lush green valley, surrounded by towering cliffs on all sides, this small community has long been known for its bustling markets and vibrant culture. At the center of town, stands a magnificent castle, home to the ruling family of Serindia. Built from the finest stone and marble, the castle boasts towering walls and a grand hall where the noble lords and ladies of the land convene to discuss matters of great importance. But it's not just the castle that makes Serindia special. Just outside of town lies a sprawling grove of wild mango trees, known throughout the region for their delicious, juicy fruit. Every year, travelers from far and wide come to Serindia to sample the famous mangoes and to attend the lively festivals that celebrate the town's bountiful harvest.
The Company of the Wind have a large office in Serendia as every year people request them to deliver these magnificent mangoes so often.
As you wander the winding streets of Serindia, you'll encounter a diverse array of merchants and craftsmen, each offering unique wares and trades. You might stop by the blacksmith's shop to watch as he expertly hammers out a new sword, or perhaps you'll visit the town's resident healer, who is renowned for her ability to cure all manner of ailments.
The kingdom of Tsaparang is renowned for its skilled craftsmen and artisans, who create beautiful textiles, intricate jewelry, and exquisite pottery. The kingdom is also famous for its fine cuisine, which blends the flavors of local spices with influences from neighboring regions. Tsaparang has been ruled by a succession of wise and just kings and queens, who are respected and loved by their subjects. The royal palace is a grand structure, with beautiful gardens and courtyards, and is home to a vast library that contained works of literature and philosophy from throughout the world. The kingdom of Tsaparang is also known for its military might, and its armies are feared by neighboring kingdoms. However, the rulers of Tsaparang prefer diplomacy and trade over war, and are respected for their ability to negotiate peaceful solutions to disputes, the most famous army regiment of the Kingdom is called The Jungle Snakes.
The Jungle Snakes is a feared and respected regiment of soldiers who are known for their unique and deadly combination of a large tower shield and a short spear, this is meant to emulate a snake striking from the foliage of the jungle while the large shield allows the user to strike from safety. The soldiers of the Jungle Snakes are expert fighters, they train in their own unique martial art which requires them to train in the use of whip-swords, a sword made with a flexible whip like blade, although relatively useless in a large scale battle these swords are deadly in one-on-one fights and it is believed training with them develops agility and hand eye coordination. The Jungle Snakes is made up of elite soldiers who are chosen for their physical strength, agility, and quick reflexes, they are fiercely loyal to their kingdom and their commanders, and are known for their bravery and determination in battle. The Jungle Snakes are key component of the Tsaparang army, and are often called upon to guard royalty in battle. Their unique weapon and fighting style make them a formidable opponent, and they are feared and respected by enemies and allies alike.
Tashigang
Nestled deep within a treacherous and barely hospitable mountain range lies the kingdom of Taishigang, protected by rugged terrain and guarded by fiercely loyal soldiers. The people of this kingdom are rugged and tough, accustomed to the harsh conditions of their environment and deeply connected to the land that sustains them.
The tallest mountain in the known world is nestled within its borders, it is a revered holy site believed to be the last place on Earth the physical forms of the Three Gods were seen.
Taishigang is named after the two main ethnic groups that reside in the area, the Taishi and the Gangparan, occupying the north-west and the south-east respectively, the Taishi are said to be early cousins of the Jangshun people who migrated into the area hundreds of years before and the Gangparan are a group of people who escaped from the fall of the Indraprastha empire by migrating to the mountains. The kingdom is ruled by a council of clan leaders, with one among them being High Chief and first among equals, these leaders are chosen by their clans for their strength, cunning, and wisdom and in turn these leaders choose one among them to be High Chief, these leaders make decisions that affect the entire kingdom, and they are known for their fierce loyalty to the land and the people. The economy of the kingdom is based on mining and lumber, with the rugged landscape yielding valuable minerals and timber. The inhabitants of the kingdom work as miners and lumberjacks, extracting these resources from the earth and using them to build their homes and defenses.
Taishigang is home to a religious order of healers called “The Order of Spring” who are a a highly respected group of monks, the members of this order are known for their extensive knowledge of herbal medicine and natural remedies, as well as their spiritual practices that are believed to aid in the healing process. The Order of Spring has a long-standing tradition of passing down their healing techniques and knowledge from generation to generation, ensuring that their skills and expertise are not lost over time they are highly revered by the people of Taishigang, who often seek their help when they are sick or injured. Due to the harsh climate and rugged terrain of Taishigang, the Order of Spring has developed unique healing methods that are tailored to the specific challenges of the environment. They are experts in treating frostbite, hypothermia, altitude sickness, and other ailments that are common in cold, mountainous regions.
The members of the Order of Spring are dedicated to their craft and often travel far and wide in search of rare and unique ingredients to use in their remedies. They are known to journey deep into the mountain ranges and even venture into neighboring kingdoms to track down plants and herbs that are believed to hold powerful healing properties. Despite their extensive knowledge and skills, the healers of the Order of Spring are humble and compassionate. They offer their services to anyone in need, regardless of their social status or wealth. It is said that their selfless dedication to healing has helped to foster a strong sense of community and trust within the kingdom of Taishigang. The capital city of Taishigang is called Dzonggar, which means "fortress on the mountain" in the ancient language of the region. It is situated on a massive mountain peak that is over 4,000 meters high, with steep cliffs and a treacherous climb to reach the top. The city is built on multiple levels that follow the contours of the mountain, with each level connected by steep staircases and winding paths. The uppermost level of Dzonggar is the highest point in the city and is home to the Dragar Dzong, which serves as the administrative center for the region.
The Dzong is an imposing fortress with thick walls, ornate carvings, and intricate murals depicting scenes from Tonpa mythology. The upper level is also home to several important temples and monasteries that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains. As one descends the mountain, the levels become more densely populated with homes and businesses. The middle levels of the city are home to bustling marketplaces, where merchants sell everything from spices to textiles to pottery. The lower levels of the city are home to workshops and industry, where artisans create beautiful handicrafts using traditional techniques. The city's buildings are made of stone and wood, with sloping roofs to withstand heavy snowfall. The streets are narrow and winding, with small shops and homes perched on the edge of the mountain. Each level of the city is connected by steep staircases and winding paths, making navigation through the city a challenging but rewarding experience. Despite its rugged location and challenging terrain, Dzonggar is a bustling city with a vibrant culture.
The people of Dzonggar are known for their colorful textiles, intricate woodcarvings, and exquisite metalwork. The city is also famous for its festivals, which are held throughout the year to celebrate the changing seasons, important religious holidays, and the city's rich cultural heritage. The military of the kingdom is composed of skilled rangers and guerilla warriors, trained to navigate the treacherous mountain terrain and to use it to their advantage. The rangers are experts in archery and hunting, the most famous regiment from Taishigang is called The Mountain Demons.
The Mountain Demons are an elite fighting force said to be established by the Lhakpa dynasty, the Mountain Demons only take the tallest of warriors some are said to reach up to 2 meters high, when one is chosen they go on a diet of carbs and protein to gain body mass, their training regiment consists of lifting heavy things and running long distances carrying heavy boulders, in battle they carry massive heavy weapons like hammers, clubs and sometimes even heavy metal gloves. Taishigang is home to the famous Druk-Lha Tsham, the Dragon-Tooth Forest, an expansive woodland that stretches across the western part of the Kingdom. The forest is named after the imposing mountain range that rises up from the trees like the teeth of a dragon.
The forest is home to a diverse array of flora and fauna, including towering pine trees, colorful wildflowers, and a variety of wildlife such as deer, foxes, and even the occasional black bear, streams and rivers flow through the forest in the summer, providing water for the plants and animals that call it home. Despite its natural beauty, the Dragon-Tooth Forest is also home to danger. Bandits and outlaws are known to hide within its depths, preying on travelers who venture too far from the safety of the nearby villages.
The forest is home to the village of Kulik a unique place where the houses are built high among the trees, the villagers live in beautiful treehouses connected by a network of wooden bridges that wind their way through the forest. The houses are made from local wood and are decorated with carvings of animals and intricate patterns. Some houses have balconies where the villagers can sit and enjoy the beautiful views of the forest.
The village has a central meeting place where the villagers gather to socialize and discuss village matters, the meeting place is just outside the only stone building in the village, the Lalimamandir, said to be a stone temple dedicated to the Dharmist God Lalima but repurposed into the home of the ruling Gurung Clan, the Gurung, saw similarities between Lalima and Caihong, who after a lengthy purification process instead dedicated the building to The Mother but kept the original name to honour the builders. The villagers are self-sufficient and grow their own food in small gardens and farms scattered throughout the forest. They also hunt and fish in the nearby rivers and streams. The villagers are known for their hospitality and welcome visitors with open arms, inviting them to stay in their beautiful treehouses and share in their way of life.
The people of the kingdom of Taishigang hold a special reverence for Caihong for it is her practical ways that help them survive the rugged terrain. The people of the kingdom have a rich artistic and musical tradition, heavily influenced by their connection to the land and the animals. They are known for their intricate carvings, woven textiles, and colorful paintings, as well as their haunting music and dance.
Khotesh
Khotesh is a kingdom to the west, most of it is located in a vast and arid desert, with small portion of the Kingdom located on grassy planes and snow-capped mountains. The kingdom is known for its rugged terrain, with towering sand dunes, rocky outcroppings, and deep canyons. Most of its people are former nomads who converted to the religion of Tonpa and settled in one place, but there are still some nomadic people who travel with their herds across the desert. The people of Khotesh practice religion fervently, with Tonpa's teachings serving as the foundation for their daily lives. Their art and architecture reflect the influence of the Three Gods, with intricate carvings and paintings of Tonpa and his disciples adorning the walls of many buildings in the kingdom. The kingdom is ruled by a powerful monarch who resides in a grand palace in the capital city of Khanbalik. The palace is a majestic structure with domed roofs and intricate carvings, surrounded by lush gardens and fountains. Despite the harshness of the environment, the people of Khotesh have a rich cultural heritage. They are proud of their nomadic roots, and many still wear traditional clothing and practice traditional customs. The former nomads who settled in one place have formed close-knit communities, and their hospitality to travelers is legendary. Its capital city; Khanbalik is a built upon the grassy plains of the hills to the east of the Kingdom. The city is situated at the junction of several trade routes, which has made it a hub of commerce and culture. Its walls are made of wood and earth, with watchtowers at regular intervals to provide defense against raiders and invaders. The city is known for its harsh and unpredictable climate, with hot winds blowing in from the desert and cold winds descending from the mountains. These winds collide over Khanbalik, creating powerful storms that batter the city every autumn and spring. The storms bring heavy rains, lightning, and hail, making travel and trade difficult during these seasons, it is said that the sun-showers that regularly bathe the city in this time are a meeting of the Three Gods as the Sun, Wind and Rain are all aspects of Caihong, Druk-Ta and Daiden respectively, people often dance in the streets when a sun-shower happens. Despite the challenges posed by the climate, Khanbalik remains a vibrant and bustling city. The streets are crowded with people from all walks of life, from wealthy merchants to wandering nomads. The city is divided into districts based on trade and social status, with the grandest buildings located near the center of the city. The palace of the ruling Khan is one of the most impressive structures in Khanbalik, with ornate wooden carvings and sweeping roofs that curve upward like the wings of a bird. The temple district is also a popular destination for visitors to the city, with a variety of religions represented in the many shrines and sanctuaries.
Khanbalik is not only a bustling hub of commerce and culture, but it is also a melting pot of different ethnic groups and cultures. One of the unique features of Khanbalik is the seasonal influx of nomads who come to the city a few times a year during the changing of the seasons. As the seasons shift from summer to autumn and from winter to spring, nomadic herders from the surrounding grasslands and mountains make their way to Khanbalik to trade goods, socialize, and partake in the city's offerings. The changing of the seasons is a time of celebration and renewal, and the nomads play an important role in this cycle. During the autumn season, nomads bring with them fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, and grains. They also bring livestock such as sheep, goats, and horses to sell in the city's markets. In turn, they purchase items such as tools, clothing, and other necessities that they cannot produce on their own. In the spring, nomads return to Khanbalik with wool, meat, and dairy products from their herds. They also bring with them handmade crafts such as felt blankets, rugs, and clothing, which they trade for goods that will sustain them throughout the summer months. The seasonal exchange between the nomads and the city-dwellers is an important part of the culture and economy of Khanbalik. It fosters a sense of community and interdependence between the different groups, and it has been a tradition for generations.
One of the most interesting places in Khotesh is the town of Rokhala, a town carved into a towering sandstone cliff that rises high above the surrounding plains, the town's location is strategic, as it is nestled in a valley along a popular trade route, making it a profitable place for a settlement, the entrance to the town is a narrow, winding path that cuts into the cliff face, providing a natural defense against invaders. The town is built in a series of caves and carved out of sandstone, with buildings made from the same material, the structures are connected by narrow walkways, staircases, and bridges that cross over the canyon below. The town has a unique charm with its rustic stone architecture and winding passageways that twist and turn, creating an intriguing labyrinth of alleys and streets. The town has a diverse population, including traders, craftsmen, and mushroom farmers who make use of shallow caves to grow them in.
The town is home to a massive sandstone mining operation that exports sandstone all over the known world, sandstone from Rokhala is seen in the Confucian Kingdoms to the East, the Dharmist Kingdoms to the South and even the Caliphist and Mazdan Kingdoms to the West. Another interesting sight in the deserts of Khotesh is Altan Gazar, a bustling caravan that travels in harmony with the seasonal migration of a massive herd of Ibex, tents and yurts, woven from the finest camel and goat hair, are packed up and loaded onto sturdy pack animals as the city prepares to move to its next destination, the inhabitants are skilled in the art of packing and unpacking, swiftly transforming their temporary dwellings into a well-organized mobile settlement. As the herd of Ibex moves across the arid landscape, guided by the keen eyes of the city's inhabitants, the nomadic city follows in its wake, the city's layout is flexible and adaptable, with a central encampment for the tribal leader and their entourage, surrounded by the dwellings of other important individuals and their families. Water is a precious commodity in the desert, and the city relies on natural springs and wells discovered along the migration route, the inhabitants are experts in locating and utilizing these hidden water sources, carefully managing their usage to sustain their community and animals throughout their journey, rainwater is also collected during rare showers and stored in large containers for times when water is scarce.
The Ibex is an integral part of life to Altan Gazar, most adults carry a drinking horn made of Ibex horn, Ibex meat is regularly consumed in the spring with various spices found in the semi-arid grassy plains of their spring migration pattern, Ibex blood is sometimes drunk when water is scarce, fermented Ibex milk is a regular drink among the adults and Ibex skins are worn during cold winter nights. The city's architecture is designed to be lightweight and portable, with structures made of woven mats, reeds, and mud bricks. The city's inhabitants are skilled in constructing and deconstructing their homes as they move, utilizing locally available materials. Life in the nomadic city is intertwined with the rhythm of the desert and the migratory patterns of the Ibex. The inhabitants have a deep bond with their animals, particularly camels, which are used for transportation, milk, and meat. The city is a hub of trade and commerce, with merchants and traders from nearby towns and villages joining the city's journey, bartering for goods and services along the way.
The army of Khotesh is renowned for its hardiness and combat prowess in desert conditions. The kingdom has a long history of fending off invasions and raids from neighboring regions, and its army is specifically trained to operate effectively in desert terrain. The soldiers of Khotesh are known for their ruggedness and resilience, with many of them hailing from nomadic backgrounds. They are skilled in mounted combat, with cavalry units comprising a significant portion of the army. These cavalry units are particularly adept at hit-and-run tactics, using their speed and mobility to strike quickly and then retreat before the enemy can respond.
In addition to cavalry, the army of Khotesh also includes infantry units that specialize in desert warfare. These soldiers are trained to navigate harsh terrain and extreme temperatures, and they are equipped with light armor and weapons that are well-suited for the desert environment. They are skilled in using terrain to their advantage, and are adept at setting ambushes and launching surprise attacks. One of the unique features of the Khotesh army is their use of desert animals in combat. The kingdom is home to a variety of animals that have been domesticated and trained for military purposes, including camels and falcons. Camels are particularly useful in desert warfare due to their ability to traverse long distances with little water, and they are often used to transport soldiers and supplies across the harsh desert terrain. Falcons, on the other hand, are used for scouting and reconnaissance, and are trained to locate and track enemy troops.
The most famous army regiment of Khotesh is called The Scorpions, they are renowned desert survivalists and lone assassins, but in times of battle they are called upon to form a vanguard for the ruling Khan or Khanum, alone they are formidable but as a unit they are immensely dangerous, they are expert hand to hand combatants and excel at short, light weapons like shortswords and javelins. Another famed regiment of Khotesh is called The Hailstones, they are a Camel cavalry unit who use shock cavalry tactics, their camels have two riders, a spearman on the front and an archer on the back, the camels are bred to be massive to carry out such a feat, the spearman on the front charges into infantry lines with the spear and then turns away from the enemy to line up another charge while the archer on the back fires into their ranks, it is a very effective tactic that has won many battles.

2023.06.07 23:29 97cweb Moon's Third Eye - Of Fears and Food

Inspiration finally came back. Starting to get to the main story soon. Please leave feedback. I write more as a play outline, but I am hoping to be able to write normally

"Well, that went about as well as I could hope," Thomas mutters to himself as he crosses the marsh back to his broken building. Storming up the stairs, he does not bother taking off his muddy shoes. Seeing the pile of leaves and discarded skins he uses as a makeshift bed, he flops down face first.
"If I did the right thing, why do I feel like I am about to break down and throw up?!"
Mind racing, he plays back over what he said and did.
"Now that I am here, I have some saved dried food, I can gather water at the stream that feeds the marsh, I have many containers to carry water with so I won't have to go everyday. I should be able to hide here for a few days."
"What to do after that? I have burned the last bridge that I had, I am not important enough to hunt so I have that going for me, but now what?"
Looking up to the sky, he sees the stars, and with tears streaming down his face, begs the stars, "Why? ...Why?"
-----
"I never thought the runt had it in him to run away," the chief bellows.
"Don't talk about him like that!"
"Why son, it's true. Today was a day to celebrate you and the work you put into making that thing work. Sure it took a few weeks to build, but you managed to organize everyone to work on it. Calling out any specific person would make it seem like you are favouring them over any other."
"But without him, th-"
"No buts! You also managed to have him flee, and with the duel he lost, he can never return. In one day, you managed to do something I have been trying to do for years. That is worth celebrating!"
Ned stands up and storms out of the dome, rustling the plastic liner within the door on the way. He immediately runs into Katrina who is standing out there, seemingly waiting for him, and possibly eavesdropping.
"So am I to go after him and return with his ears? Or tongue?"
"Katrina! What are you saying?! Yes, he is as good as dead, but we don't need to kill him."
"This is why you will make a poor chief. No guts to follow through on promises"
"There was no promise. I did not even get to choose the combat!"
"Good thing, you probably would have allowed himself to defend what he said. Claiming all your work in setting up the pump and organizing the village"
"You really think I had the idea? I can barely sort people's problems and what the craftsworkers do might as well be magic! I know that I shouldn't touch the sharp bit or the hot thing, but that's it!"
"You don't have to know those things, you know how to delegate. So what if it was not your idea. It was still you who did the work to actually get it to happen"
Suddenly, one of the villagers runs in. "Master Ned, the pump's broke"
"What do you mean, 'the pump's broke'? It has only been a few hours since we started it, and it was tested for days before!"
"The handle turns, but no water comes up"
Ned storms off to the pump, followed by the villager and Katrina. He arrives at the pump, slips through the gathering crowd, and tries the handle. It is very loose, but the screw seems to spin.
"That does not make sense, it's loose, but I was here before the festival and it worked perfectly. I would even say it was stiff"
Katrina stands, and in a huff, exclaims "It must have been Thomas! I should have ended him when I had the chance!"
"No! Katrina! Come back here right now!"
"You're not the boss, and you're not my dad!!" Katrina shouts as she runs off into the forest, bow in hand and spear on back.
"Should we fix it?" "Can we fix it?" "I don't know", the crowd mumbles
Ned, thinking about what Katrina said before arriving at the pump, stands straight and shouts:
"All of you! We are going to fix this pump, not because it is easy, but because it is unknown. One of you snuck the plans to me, so one of you knows how it works. I want this info to be spread across all craftspeople and this pump deconstructed and repaired. Do I make myself clear?!"
"Yes!" Most of the crowd exclaims. Many of the younger craftsmen immediately start yanking the pump out of the creek bank to bring it back into the shop.
Ned, ready to head back, feels a hand on his shoulder, and sees that it is Nathaniel. The tall and lanky many with a wild eye stares at him. The rest of the crowd has eagerly wandered away. Nathaniel speaks, "Good for you to start looking to the past and future. I feel that my time is near, but may the sky guide you through the challenges ahead with the winds of change"
Ned, carefully brushing off the old man's hand, replies "...ok, sure... You've got a few more years left though."
-----
Early the next morning, Thomas awakes, confused and hungry. He quickly remembers what occured the day before. He quickly eats some of his stored pemmican and water he gathered. Now finding himself with a lot of spare time, and still needing to be incognito, he stays in the building and explores a few more of the rooms. Coming into one of the smaller rooms, he comes across another long rotted out pile of springs arranged in a rectangle, and another bookshelf. Seeing these books, his eyes light up and he quickly walks over to them, testing the floor on the way. Gently lifting one our of the case, he sees that they are damp, but in pretty good shape for being in an enclosed room with a rotted metal thing.
Leafing through, he sees that it is without pictures. Placing it gently on the floor, he opens another one, and in it,sees strange yet familar shapes of a spoon, archer and W. Studying them, he realizes this is a book of star pictures, 'constellations' as the book calls them. And is surprised to find that these stars are actually each a far away sun.
Hours pass, engrossed in the knowledge of space and distances of billions, he dozes off, surrounded by books, and sleeps calmly for the first time in years.
Several days later, he forces himself to eat some pemmican and now sick of it, decides to venture out into the marsh. Sneaking through the bushes on its edge to ensure no one sees him or hears him, he spies a small pile of food, and recognizes it as a standard lunch for the kids collecting nails. He checks his surroundings, and takes the bun, and some of the dried strawberries and hightails it back to the building.
Sitting down to enjoy his meal, he realizes that he stole from one of the kids he probably helped pull nails from the ground. Taking some of his pemmican, he brings it back to where the lunch is, and places it where he found the bun.
Seeing the amount of disturbed ground around the small pile of food, he quickly snaps a pine bough off and brushes over the footprints to hide his presence.
He returns to his house, nay his home, and reads, happy if a little guilty at the food gained, and more importantly, the knowledge of the stars that this book provides.

2023.06.07 22:20 XcalaforceBruh Notes on the study material for the next Bundesnachdan history quiz

The history test will be done in four segments each of which going over a specific period or event that takes place in Bundesnachda.
Segment 1: The Kokatiel Family Massacre
Duncan Kokatiel was a man praised for his aid in the war for Shibuya. He was initially a humble Bundesnachdan goat breeder but upon the request of General Noah he began to breed the goats as 'Bundesnachdan War Goats' to help bring the south side victory. The goats bred in Bundesnachda were ideal for war as they had an unbelievable amount of natural aggression, so much so that they are not allowed around children under the age of sixteen to this very day due to their insatiable hunger for human flesh. These goats were used to stop the southern Bundesnachdan residents from fleeing to hide in the north side before the dome was placed, leading to the events of 'The Great Bundesnachdan Feast'. Duncan Kokatiel however was driven to madness raising these war goats as it was not the same as raising a regular goat, to raise a war goat they had to be raised on human meat rather than the normal kibble. This festered their aggression and made them far more violent, but the madness Duncan developed did not come from their aggression it came from the souls as Bundesnachdan goats can be possessed temporarily by the souls of the flesh they consume. Day by day raising these goats for the war consumed his sanity they whispered the words of the dammed in his hear. Soon after the war his insanity consumed him and he went on a wild rampage killing his wife, daughter, brother and two sons obtaining a pentakill. He did the murders using his prized possession, a shotgun he called 'The Collector'. This event caused his exile and he has not been seen since.
Segment 2: The National Celebration of John Bundas second marriage
A modern historic event that occurred is John Bundas forty seventh marriage to the Hamburger Helper Hand. Only a few years ago John got a divorce from his then 46th wife Beyoncé Bunda. Therefore as is tradition and Law in Bundesnachda he ate her. As many of you will know when a man divorces a woman in Bundesnachda it is customary that he air fryes her and eats her with is children (In bundesnacha the air fryer was invented before the flintlock pistol).
When John Bunda married soon to be Hamburger Helper Hand Bunda it is believed to be the biggest party in Bundesnachdan history, it lasted 5 days and 5 nights many people died during but when they did the party go-ers would just collect and cook up the corpse and eat it, John Bunda labled this strategy as 'Getting Party Fuel'. The 5 days were mesmerising people of all ages, drinking, smoking and finding joy it was truly blissful, you would look out your window and all you would see is a sea of perky nipples and smiles.
After the end of the 5 days John Bunda gave a wedding gift to his people, he stuffed a bunch of at the time mysterious purple objects into a giant cannon. Then BOOM a flurry of thousands of Rabbadon's Death Caps flew into the crowd as his people cheered. "THIS IS MY GIFT TO YOU, THAT YOU FOR COMING!" John Bunda screamed and that concluded not only the biggest party ever thrown but also the best marriage in Bundesnachdan History.
Segment 3: The Tunnels Below Bundesnachda
A lesser spoken of part of Bundesnachdan history is John Bundas colonisation of the land. In 5 BBC, soon after arriving to the island and forging a family with the chimps John Bunda encountered the original inhabitants of the land... The Gnomes. They were incredibly aggressive toward Mr Bunda and the chmips and despite their best effort would not agree to join forces with them to create the wonderful nation we live in today. After their many disputes with the new self-proclaimed leader of what he was now calling 'Bundesnachda' the Gnomes would scurry back to their tunnels. The Gnomes lived in what was discovered to be a tunnel system filled with many colonies of Gnomes. They sustained themselves using strange liquids and fruits they found and grew in their tunnels, some say these strange now extinct 'Bundesnachdan Delicacies' are the key to what made John Bunda immortal and why he is still alive and healthy to this day. Although things changed for the Gnomes when the glorious John Bunda and his chimps grew sick of the vile gnomes refusal to join them when suddenly one of Bundesnachdas first miracles occurred, one of the chimps spoke to John and he said... "John our glorious and kind hearted leader, we cannot grow to be the greatest nation to ever exist if these evil gnomes do not follow us I know what we must do..." John then asked the chimp what we had to do, the chimp then spoke of the first great war strategies in Bundesnachda 'The great Gnome Flush' the chimps plan was as follows: "John, first we must erect.. hehehe I said erect. Anyway we must erect a giant forge the size of witch the world has never seen and within that forge we must melt millions of gallons of metal and pour it into the gnomes tunnels capturing all of them and their homes in an eternity of a metal prison." A tear flew down John Bundas cheek when he heard the idea, it was a stroke of pure genius, he was in disbelief not only because of his tremendous respect for the idea but also at the fact that mere moments ago this chimpanzee could only make chimp sounds and now it can speak fluent English. They got to work, in only 3 hours John Bunda and 3 other chimps built what we now know as the 'Great Tower of Bunda Apartment Building' but at the time was a forge to melt metal, this forge was twice the size of the current empire state building in New York. They quickly melted all the required material that the other chimps mined before pouring it into the Gnomes tunnels using a comedically large funnel. What's great is you can view the entire frozen in metal Gnome tunnel system today as it's on display at the Ambassing Museum in Shibuya.

2023.06.07 21:07 endersgame69 Adopted By Humans VII C20

There is a human expression, the candle that shines twice as bright burns for half as long. Perhaps the short lifespans of humans has something to do with this, but in the days following the Walker decision to abide by the wishes of both governments, the reality of the danger seemed to settle in over them all.
Not just because of the trip itself, and space travel was still not without its risks, pirates, accidents, natural disasters, many things could happen that would leave someone dying in the void to drift forever between the stars.
But also because the very success of our collective task might well be the axel on which the future peace of the galaxy. Everybody wanted to land on the Rogue World.
Everybody wanted the technological secrets that the scans from so long ago hinted might be there, nobody wanted anyone else to have it, and everybody was willing to kill everybody else to keep that from happening.
And with this rising danger came not a deep, dark depression, but a kind of strange celebration.
We had some months before the station could be completed, after which William would no longer need to do more than survey the final work and be briefed by the foreman of each section, a few days of tests and diagnostics at most.
And even when that was done, Bonny Red was six months away. True, Rebecca still had her role in the Methuselah Initiative, but she worked from home for the most part and then not every hour of every day.
So as a kind of send off, before the world itself was alerted to any dangers, William arranged for a family reunion. Rebecca, unfortunately, had no surviving family members on her side, which is unfortunate, but also perhaps explains her particular care for the one she shares a household with.
William Walker’s family tree however, is vast. Not just in his sisters, but also in his father’s brothers and sisters who in turn had wives, husbands, and children, and the same went for his father’s father, who had brothers and sisters who… well let it simply be said that a ‘family reunion’ for the Walker clan is an extensive one. On the unexpected upside, that did make it easy for Professor Sxlith to ensure every one of his chosen students had a Walker family branch to host them.
As a matter of necessity our collaboration was minimal and our professor, while available, kept himself distant unless we expressly sought out his advice, and I seldom had occasion to do so.
So it had been quite some time, actually years, now that I thought about it, since we’d been in the same room together and months since I had written anything other than progress notes to my professor and a request for his opinion on how the University would respond to my fighting league.
Arranging for the reunion took the better part of a month, and it had to be scheduled three months out and certain calls had to be made to ask certain people to call various supervisors, bosses, and so on, and ensure that they understood it was important that nothing interfere with their brief absences.
I think, for the sake of the historical record, that it’s important to say that William did not ask the government to do this for him. However modern Earth society puts a great deal of emphasis on general ‘wellness’ and having high morale in their work.
To put this in analogous terms, on Dlamias, if you recall my previous writings about my homeworld, we have a veritable army of surveyors who are always checking social trends in order to control for any potential issues. That process kept us stable for millenia, as we could identify shortfalls and dangerous elements, possible corruption, and more. I daresay our statisticians are some of the hardest working in the galaxy and we are the best documented people…anywhere.
By contrast, the humans of Earth kept experts on mental wellness, something my world never had, and their role was to ensure that demographics were not experiencing uncertainty, doubt, or struggle. The occasion of the Silent Civil War showed that, if anything, they were significantly underfunded and so their numbers rose. More than that, they were now tied to other social service and survey work, keeping closely tied to their own census offices to look for social trends that might pose a danger or identify a growing weakness.
Somebody involved in that office likely suggested that the Walkers would perform best if they gained a profoundly positive experience beforehand, and a large reunion seemed to fit the bill.
Or rather… fit the will.
William’s puns are rubbing off on me. I know it. It is a sickness and I cannot stop. May my readers forgive me.
Moving on… in the aftermath of that decision and having made arrangements for the family reunion, Fauve took the unusual step of buying tickets to Waterland Park.
I was at the table when the notification came in on my datapad.
Fauve was at the table munching on a crispy piece of bacon. I did not know there was a smug way to chew. But apparently I was wrong.
She sat there tinkering away on her datapad while eating her breakfast, steam rose from the eggs and while she waited for the biscuits to arrive, and a moment later Byron and Boatswain came into view as they passed through the library of the house.
The bullet holes in the wall were all patched and the blood was long since cleaned up, the whole place looked like new. I could still smell the faint odor of blood even years later, but on reflection I considered that more likely to be mental than real.
“Waterland Park? Isn’t that where…?” Byron didn’t finish the sentence. He may have been a brute of a soldier, but as a man, as someone who was virtually part of the family, he was very sensitive about anything to do with the Walker children. Even if that ‘child’ was now an adult in her own right.
I think if he had been there that day, he might have killed the one responsible. I won’t pretend I don’t sometimes wish I had. Now the park was under new management and it had a much better reputation.
But even so, I was surprised to see the purchase.
Rebecca set the tray of biscuits down and Fauve immediately snatched one up and began to make a bacon and egg biscuit out of the three components.
“Yes. It was. But the old bastard is who knows and who cares where now, and his trash son is rotting in a prison somewhere. Besides, it’s summer, we should go somewhere fun.” Fauve pointed out as her father entered the room after having dressed.
“But there? Is that really wise?” He asked.
“Yes.” Fauve said, considering it was now summer, her voice was cold as ice.
“We need something fun to do for the reunion, I mean, dad, I know how the rest of your side of the family gets.” She gave him a phony death stare and William, to his credit, sheepishly rubbed the back of his head.
“They are a… funny lot.” He acknowledged.
“Uh huh.” Fauve agreed, “But we can’t just have them hanging out here all day, the house has only so much space, and they’ve got a bunch of kids Michael’s age and younger. We should get everybody good and tired so they can really relax for the rest of the day.”
“But there?” Boatswain pointed out, “We could just as easily go to the local park and set up a barbecue and some games.”
Boatswain’s response was practical, it was true, but unironically we’d all still end up getting wet, I’d wager.
“True, but…” Fauve stopped and reached for the pot of coffee her mother set on the table, as she filled her cup she said, “Who knows if I’ll ever get to go there again, that’s the last thing, the last place where I ever felt weak. I want to go back and conquer it, before I go out into space…again, to go do something else. I can’t…” She breathed out a weighty sigh and began dumping spoonfuls of sugar into her coffee cup, the faint noise of the metal spoon ‘tinking’ against the mug before the scraping of it as she stirred was like a timer counting down the moments until she explained herself.
“I can’t just leave for months, or a year, or whatever, without going back there first, it’ll feel like running away again. It’s nobody else’s problem, everybody else will have fun, but I want to know that I can. I want to face that place and laugh and splash and get wet and go down slides like we were supposed to. You know? Besides, everybody will have fun and if I do struggle, I’m ten minutes from home.”
The table was quiet, Michael was yawning as he came down the stairs with his face buried in his datapad. “Are these… tickets?” He asked.
“Besides, I already bought them so now you have to go or your Fauve’s heart will just be utterly shattered.” She made a gasping noise, leaned back, and clutched melodramatically at her heart before winking at the rest of us.
“Well we don’t want that… so fine. It’s not like nobody can get a swimsuit.” William agreed.
Rebecca looked toward Michael and answered, “Yes, your big sister bought us all tickets to the waterpark for the reunion.”
“Hey, thanks Fauve!” He said and gave her a big hug, squeezing her around the upper arms when he leaned forward behind her.
“You’re welcome.” Fauve said, though I think not just to Michael, and took a big bite out of her bacon and egg biscuit, which she proceeded to chew quite slowly.
That, settled that.
And yes… she was definitely looking smug about it.

2023.06.07 20:14 Definition_Novel Some facts about Lithuanians who fought for the USSR (re-post, better format.)

Some facts about Lithuanians who fought for the USSR (re-post, better format.)
-Lithuania had the most Soviet partisans out of all 3 Baltic states, with an estimated 7- 10,000 operating in Lithuania during the Nazi occupation. (From Wikipedia.)
-About 5,000 people, many being Lithuanian citizens, gave their lives defending Lithuania during the early moments of the German invasion (from Wikipedia.) Most of the following info is from an interview with Lithuanian Soviet veteran Julius Deksnys from the Russian language newspaper Obzhor, translated:
-The 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division is often considered the most diverse division of the USSR. In it, ethnic Lithuanians, Lithuanian Jews, Russians, Poles, and other ethnicities in Lithuania and from other Soviet republics were represented.
-There was also the 29th Lithuanian Rifle Corps, which unlike the 16th Division, the 29th was filled with deserters who fled to the enemy. However, most of the soldiers of the 29th Corps who chose to stay with the USSR who didn’t desert were eventually sent to the much larger 16th Division. Among those who stayed with Soviet forces was heroic Lithuanian Soviet lieutenant general Vincas Vitkauskas, the only Lithuanian to receive such rank. The 16th Rifle Division did not generally have a desertion problem, and most of its members were committed to defeating both the German and Baltic fascist enemies. (From Wikipedia.)
-in Vilnius in 1944 sometime before liberation, 1,417 soldiers were recruited to the Red Army. Of the Lithuanian citizens recruited to the Red Army from the city that year, 898 were from the Polish minority of Lithuania, some of whom served in the Polish Armed Forces of the USSR.
5,000 Lithuanians participated in the East Prussian offensive.
8,000 Lithuanians participated in the Soviet liberation of Berlin.
The 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division is well known for its defending of the Russian city of Oryol, where a memorial exists, as well as its amazing feats in the Battle of Kursk, the Klaipeda, Vilnius, and Siauliai offensives, and the battles against Latvian SS in the Courland Pocket in neighboring Latvia. Of the 16th Lithuanian Division, 9,255 soldiers of all ethnicities died in battle. When measured strictly for ethnic Lithuanian casualties, the number is 5,040.
In all units of the Red Army total, 40,000 Lithuanians went missing, never to return home. 80,000 were confirmed dead.
253 memorial monuments were built to the veterans of Lithuania throughout Lithuania, many of which unfortunately are decreasing in number due to the right wing government as well as ultranationalist sentiments of much of the ethnic Lithuanian population, whom have replaced many Soviet veterans monuments with ones to fascist collaborators.
Regardless of troubling circumstances in present day Lithuania, some Soviet veterans are determined to protect their history, among them ethnic Lithuanian veteran Julius Deksnys, who leads a support group for Soviet veterans. Not mentioned in the following article, Deksnys has been fighting fascism since the very beginning of the war in the Baltic states. He willingly enlisted in the Red Army to avenge the death of his father after his father was killed by Lithuanian nationalists for being a communist. Towards the end of the war, when Deksnys was captured on the battlefield, nationalist Nazi collaborators took Deksnys prisoner and he was sent to a Nazi labor camp, where he survived to Soviet liberation.
He had much to say about the mistreatment of Soviet veterans in modern Lithuania in an interview a few years ago, which I will post much of his lengthy statement below, where I have fixed certain translations typing errors:
“After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the restoration of the statehood of the Republic of Lithuania, veterans of the Great Patriotic War had to solve the problems that arose with the change in the socio-economic, political and ideological system of the country. The most offensive for veterans was the statements of politicians, then enshrined in law, that Lithuania did not participate in World War II, and on May 9, 1945, the day of the Great Victory over fascism, seemed to be the day of the second occupation of our country.
Attempts by some Lithuanian politicians and historians to rewrite the history of World War II, distort it, to show the period of fascist occupation of 1941-1944 as a noble mission of Nazi Germany to liberate Lithuania from Bolshevism, to justify the crimes of accomplices of the occupiers against humanity are a monstrous lie. In fact, during the Second World War, the issue of the life and death of the entire Lithuanian people was resolved in the most brutal way. After all, according to the plans of the Nazi leaders, Lithuania should have disappeared in the future like a drop of water on a hot stone.
We are urged not to forget the lessons of the war to remember the huge human losses during the years of fascist occupation, including the victims of the Holocaust, the soldiers of the Red Army and Soviet partisans who died for the liberation of Lithuania. The Soviet-era veteran organization and its Republican Committee of Veterans ceased to exist in 1990. Many participants of the Great Patriotic War, citizens of a once great and powerful country, faced the need to decide on citizenship in the newly created independent states of the former Soviet Union. This is how citizens of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and other countries appeared in Lithuania.
But they were all united by one thing - the fighting past, the fighting brotherhood and the memory of the Victory over fascism. the combat history of the Lithuanian national unit, the combat service of the intelligence officer of the 18th separate reconnaissance company Paulius Širvys, later an outstanding poet of Lithuania, who was often compared to Sergei Yesenin, is especially noted. But few people know what a brave intelligence officer he was. P. Širvys distinguished himself in many battles and was awarded the Order of Glory of the 3rd degree and two medals “For Courage”. His romantic poems and poems dedicated to the soldier are read and recited by both young and old. Composers compose music based on his words, to organize concerts.
When communicating with young people, you are convinced that many young people did not know that their favorite poet during the war was a combat scout, my combat friend. My platoon commander of the same reconnaissance company, Hero of the Soviet Union Boleslovas Gegzhnas and many other soldiers and officers of the division, deserve good memory. People died in those hard battles. During the entire existence of the division, 9,255 fighters have died, including 5,040 Lithuanian soldiers.
But how do young generations know about it? In the programs for studying the history of secondary schools, only the fact that such a division was during the war is mentioned, but nothing is said about its heroic combat path, combat exploits. Almost 40,000 Lithuanian residents mobilized to the Red Army did not return from the war. The memory of them is sacred. It will not be possible to emasculate from public consciousness, forget the heroic and decisive role of the Red Army in defeating fascism, denigrate the feat of Soviet soldiers, forget about the victims of the Holocaust, about 80,000 soldiers who gave their lives for the liberation of our Motherland.
From 1946 to 1948, military memorials were created in cities and districts, in settlements where major battles took place, where the remains of Soviet soldiers were transferred from solitary graves and mass graves. In total, there are currently 253 military memorials and graves in Lithuania, many have monuments, there are memorial plates with the names of the fallen soldiers. Since 2000, with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Lithuania, repair and restoration work has been carried out on military graves. But recently, extremely negative trends in the fight against monuments of the Soviet past have been increasingly manifested in Lithuania. Monuments of special artistic and historical value created by Lithuanian classic sculptors are being demolished. I mean sculptural compositions on the Green Bridge in Vilnius, as well as monuments to Hero of Soviet Union Marytė Melnikaitė in Zarasai and twice Hero of Soviet Union pilot Yakov Smushkevich in Rokiskis.
The most important attributes of the life of veterans, the object of their well-deserved pride are combat awards for feats on the battlefields. Orders and medals have Soviet symbols: red star, sickle and hammer, the image of Supreme Commander-in-Chief Joseph V. Stalin. For this reason, wearing them in everyday life is prohibited at the legislative level. This is not only a moral insult to veterans, but also a direct violation of human rights. Such laws have contributed to the activation of ultranationalist sentiments and neo-Nazi manifestations.
Cases of vandalism actually encouraged by the authorities at the graves of Soviet soldiers, the demolition of Soviet symbols from monuments have become more frequent, even though they are included in the register of cultural heritage. What will remain of this kind of intervention? Naked memorial steles and plates... The most interesting thing is that the main argument for such actions is the statement that Soviet symbols offend the feelings of a large social group of people affected by Soviet power. But it is permissible to ask: are veterans who did not spare their lives, health in the fight against the Nazis deprived of feelings and the right to memory of their dead comrades? At the origins of our veteran organization were front-line soldiers Juozas Adamonis, Algimantas Stankevičius, Petras Eidukas. With Algimantas Stankevicius, I happened to serve in the first platoon of the first company of the first battalion of the 156th Rifle Regiment of the 16th Lithuanian Rifle Division.
On January 27, 1945, we walked together in a chain of attacking warriors, freeing Klaipeda from the Nazi invaders. Stapas Shimonis, becoming chairman of the organization in 1993, did a lot to unite its members, her admission to the World Federation of War Veterans. At the General Assembly of the Federation in Seoul, he was elected a member of the executive committee. After him, since 1999, the organization was headed by Petras Eidukas, who was awarded the title of Honorary Chairman in 2015. Unfortunately, he passed away this year.
Despite his 92 years, Nikolai Mikhailovich Riskov, chairman of the veteran organization of the Šalcinunkai district, works actively. On his initiative, a museum of participants of the Great Patriotic War was opened in the district center of Šalcininkai. This is the first museum of its kind in Lithuania, which was opened on July 16, 2014, to the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Šalcininkai and Vilnius. The museum contains a collection of photos of front-line soldiers and Soviet partisans who participated in the liberation of the district or lived after the war, as well as various copies of documents of the war years, military memoirs, books about the war. Relatives bring combat awards, various documents of deceased veterans to the museum. Schoolchildren come to the museum, solemn events dedicated to Victory Day, the Day of Liberation of the district are held here. During the celebrations dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Victory Day, N. Riskov decided to post photos of deceased veterans, residents of the Šalcininkai district, at the city grave of Soviet soldiers, next to the graves of the deceased liberators of the district. This action attracted residents and was continued.
People began to bring photos of deceased relatives. This is how the idea of the “Immortal Regiment” was born in Lithuania.
Today it is bitter to admit that Lithuania has enough of those who are trying to forget the lessons of the Nuremberg Tribunal, which condemned not only fascism in all its manifestations, but also Nazi accomplices. The names of the latter are now called streets and squares, they are honored as national heroes. And war veterans, the winners defeating fascism, have become outcasts of society, the authorities do not pay any attention to them, even in the days of the celebration of the end of the war in Europe, there is not a single kind word for them, let alone gratitude. Nationalist youth call our awards trifs, we are forbidden to wear our combat awards only on the grounds that the orders and medals depict Soviet symbols.” -Julius Deksnys, from an interview with Obzhor newspaper issue # 1041, Dec. 24,2016.
Much thanks to the Russian-Lithuanian language publication Obzhor.lt, whom conducted the interview with Julius Deksnys that I had to translate with a webpage translator as I cannot read Russian. Most importantly, thank you to Julius Deksnys for protecting the Soviet veteran memory, as he is one of my personal heroes whom inspired me to archive photos of Baltic Soviet veterans.
