2023.06.09 16:11 idontwannabepicked Is there any hope for a high paying job for a woman who doesn’t want to work in healthcare or code?

24 F, TX. I started going to college when I was 16 because my high school paid for it. By the time I graduated my basics were done. I picked my major after the 2016 election, poltical science with a minor in history and I will say this is what I’m passionate about. I mean, I know it’s what all young people are passionate about. But I absolutely eat this shit up. Unfortunately I realized pretty quickly that I fucked myself. I do not want to be a lawyer. I don’t have the money or the GPA (I think I’m riding at a 2.5 and I blame that on not taking it seriously as a teenager) I just turned 24. I still don’t have a degree. I changed my major to computer science at one point, did a semester, then to social work for a semester. I fucking hate computer science. I’m great with computers and the go to IT girl at my job. I’ve had a computer and internet access since I was like 5 so it all comes second nature to me but computer science. I’ve tried to take the coding boot camps, I HATE them. I’m not good at following along at home or WFH. I fail miserably at both. I need someone to report to and to be afraid of lmao. I also have even less interest in healthcare, ANYTHING related to it. It’s literally what every woman down here does and they make stupid good money but it’s just..not for me. I don’t want to. I have a weak stomach on top of not having great customer service skills. I’ve been doing admin/office work for most of my twenties and I do enjoy it. I currently work at a nonprofit and it’s been a great place for me. My title is receptionist but I also do write their grants/all social media post and I think that’s my issue. None of my skills are high paying ones. I’m not interested in sales. Not to sound like a typical gen z’er, but it sounds stressful. I don’t want to have to meet certain quotas and be stressed over that. I would like something simple just 40-50 hours a week and the same paycheck every time. I have loved the non profit world and my personality type fits in perfect for it but I also know they pay caps out around $50,000 and that’s the high end unless you’re an ED or an actual grant writer. Money isn’t everything to me which is why I don’t want to leave my current job right now. I make $35,000 in a LCOL area and I have no student loans. I’m also just not an expensive person so I manage pretty well. I manage to read about a book a week at work, got a grant writing certificate while working, and when I was still taking classes, I could do all my HW/readings at work. My boss is an amazing person and I feel valued/cared for at my job. I started at $10 hr in October but have gotten 2 small raises since then on top of a $2k christmas bonus. I have no intention of leaving right now but i know the time will eventually come and I want to be prepared. I don’t want to just be a receptionist for the rest of my life (even though this is the job that keeps every buisness together and is highly important)

2023.06.09 16:03 Thisvthat Anime On Amazon: The Collapse of Anime Strike

Here's a link to the video [6:17]

Transcript:

On January 12, 2017, Amazon launched Anime Strike–an anime focused subscription service– in the United States. It was launched on Amazon Channels, a program that allowed Amazon Prime customers to subscribe to various channels like HBO, Starz, and Showtime through their platform. If you decided to subscribe to Anime Strike, you wouldn’t have to see any ads but it would cost you $4.99 a month. In addition to video-on-demand, the service would also be simulcasting various shows from Japan, like Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga. In order to pull more fans to the service, Amazon had acquired the exclusive U.S. streaming rights for several anime, including Scum’s Wish and The Great Passage.
Anime Strike was Amazon’s first attempt at creating an original channel. As for why they decided to target anime fans, they thought that they could fill a gap left open by traditional media. According to Michael Paull, Amazon’s Vice President of Digital Video and the lead of Amazon Channels, “With anime in particular, there’s a strong, passionate audience that is underserved by traditional pay TV.”
The service faced criticism immediately upon release, with its price at the center of attention. As mentioned previously, Amazon Channels were only available to Amazon Prime customers, and each channel required its own, separate, subscription. Meaning that you’d have to pay $99 a year, or $12.99 a month, for Amazon Prime and then an additional $4.99 a month if you wanted to watch Anime Strike. This would make it significantly more expensive than other anime streaming services like Crunchyroll and Funimation, and still more expensive than less anime-focused services like Hulu and Netflix. And, unlike Funimation and Crunchyroll, there wasn’t a cheaper, ad-supported, option for viewers. If all you wanted to do was watch the anime on Amazon’s new service, it wouldn’t be cheap.
When Anime News Network asked about why they decided to charge an additional fee on top of a Prime subscription, here was Michael Paull’s response, “Well, the definition of TV has changed a lot over the last couple years. At the highest level, there's increased customer choice with the growth of on-demand programming and the proliferation of channels and ways to get those channels. It's become all about bringing customers what they want to watch, when and where they want to watch it. That's what we've done with Anime Strike. There's a passionate group of fans who would love to have anime content all in one place, and to do that made sense – to create a separate, dedicated channel. There's much more anime content available as part of the subscription than what can be found in Prime Video, which is similar to other channels like HBO, or PBS Kids for example.”
While it would feature more than 1000 episodes and movies, Anime Strike’s catalog wasn’t very impressive when compared to Crunchyroll and Funimation. But, with the Spring anime season just around the corner, they didn’t waste time. In March, they signed deals with both Sentai Filmworks and Aniplex. And, on April 5, 2017, Anime Strike announced their Spring line-up, which featured 12 shows, with 10 of them being Anime Strike exclusives. And these exclusive agreements highlighted another problem that fans had with the service: further fragmentation.
After Funimation and Crunchyroll’s partnership agreement was signed in 2016, it looked like anime fans would finally have an “all-in-one” streaming service. If you wanted to watch simulcasted anime, a Crunchyroll subscription would get you most of the way there. If you wanted dubs, the same was true for Funimation. But with Anime Strike in the mix, and gobbling up several popular exclusives, this was no longer true. And it seems as if Amazon’s strategy was paying off. In a statement to Forbes, Amazon announced that Anime Strike was performing better than they expected. “Anime Strike is performing great… Signups are higher than initial projections as we add more content and more features. Besides new episodes every week and new shows every season, we’ve been able to introduce new things that anime fans weren’t able to get before like the ability to download and watch thousands of episodes or movies on Anime Strike to their smartphone and tablet (which is awesome for anyone who’ll be traveling a lot this summer) or a free manga every month from ComiXology.”
And all of those signups were from the United States. From the very beginning, Amazon hadn’t been willing to say anything about releasing Anime Strike in other markets.
[Mother’s Basement]: “Amazon Prime Video only just became available to Canada this winter, when it was also rolled out to the rest of the world. But, even now, it feels like the ‘rest of the world’ is an afterthought for Amazon. The Prime Video app still isn’t available on any Canadian app store for any of the devices that are currently plugged into my TV. And the actual Anime Strike service isn’t available here at all. Which means that what few shows that we do have are one, or more, episodes behind and we have no way to access their premium simulcast service.”
When asked about this on launch day, they didn’t have anything to say. And when asked a similar question by Forbes in May, their response was a little longer, but still didn’t say anything.
News slowed down until June 30, when Anime Strike announced their summer line-up. However, there was a significant drop off in the number of exclusives. Out of the 11 new shows in the line-up, only three of them were exclusives. And, while no one knew it at the time, this was the beginning of the end. News would dry up over the course of the summer season, and the channel’s social media accounts went silent. Anime Strike would release its Fall line-up on October 3, and it would only include two exclusive shows. News would dry up again and the winter season would pass without Anime Strike releasing a new exclusive line-up. Then, on January 5, 2018, less than a year after the service was launched, Anime Strike was shut down. All of the content that was originally exclusive to Anime Strike would be available through Prime Video, and all existing subscriptions to the channel would be automatically canceled.
Despite its problems, it was surprising to see the service shuttered so quickly. Amazon was, at least initially, willing to dump lots of money into the service in order to secure exclusive streaming rights and pull in customers. But it looks like, at some point in the middle of 2017, things changed. According to Justin Saviks, The Answerman, “Anime Strike's demise wasn't solely because it disappointed the market it was trying to serve, though. The service was one part of a much bigger picture: the fact that Amazon's streaming service just isn't doing well, in general. The last quarter of 2017 was a tumultuous one for Amazon Studios. After a promising early start … the network spent an ungodly sum of money on shows that ultimately failed… Anime Strike and its sister service Heera (which specialized in Bollywood movies) were part of the vision of that old regime. When the new management took over, they no doubt saw how the two secondary services were performing and decided not to continue throwing money at them. We can only guess as to their logic, but they no doubt have bigger fish to fry. Rather than continuing to throw money at a small audience that's turned hostile towards them, I'm sure they think it a better idea to concentrate on making a new mainstream hit [Edited for clarity].”
Anime Strike is an interesting note in the history of anime streaming. Despite lasting for less than a year, it managed to become, probably, the most hated anime streaming service ever.

2023.06.09 16:02 Edward_Stivenson How to Write a Discursive Essay: Awesome Guide and Template

How to Write a Discursive Essay: Awesome Guide and Template
Generally, if you are studying for an academic degree, you most definitely will have to write an essay. This type of academic paper comes in various types, including a discursive essay. What is a discursive essay? In a nutshell, it is a formal paper that has to express an author’s neutral position regarding a topic. If you wonder how to write a discursive essay, there are several common options:
  • Expressing your impartial view on the topic
  • Providing arguments for or against the matter
  • Presenting a few problem solutions
Remember, a top-tier discursive essay usually has a calm tone, unlike a persuasive essay. Besides, it’s best to avoid slang and other types of informal language in a paper like this. If you need the best results you can either buy an essay paper or spend the time to learn the main rules on how to write a discursive essay yourself.
What Makes a Good Argumentative Essay?
According to the discursive essay definition, this kind of work represents a strong position with reliable backup. Hence, creating a good argumentative paper requires meticulous preparation. Some might believe that writing relies on pure talent, but it’s just one of the components of success. Let’s unpack the secrets of an A+ essay!
Opt for a controversial topic
You might be wondering: “How do I stay original?”. People often choose to play safe and pick common essay themes. But if you want to be unique, it’s best to choose something unusual. Fortunately, there are numerous unconventional discussion topics today. Ideally, the theme should be both unusual and familiar to you to make it easier to provide interesting cases and back them up with arguments. It's quite another matter if you have the task of "do math homework". Mathematics is an exact science, and accordingly you need to have the necessary knowledge.
Strong thesis
After you've selected an unconventional topic, the goal is to come up with a strong thesis statement. To clarify, an essay must contain a statement that narrows down the view on a broad problem. Avoiding statements that are obvious and hardly debatable is key. Instead, stick to the controversial subjects that are easy to support with facts.
Thorough research
Another top priority before starting an essay is digging through different sources of information beforehand. To rely on word of mouth exclusively is ineffective. Take your time to find supporting evidence, especially if the theme is new to you. A lack of technical knowledge often leads to errors in an academic paper. Any discursive essay example must have relevant sources.
Discursive Essay Outline
Indeed, learning a discursive essay definition is hardly enough to create a great paper. The second essential step is to memorize the structure of such a paper. Normally, the discursive essay outline includes:
  • Introduction
  • Main body
  • Summary
A key rule is to express one thought in one paragraph. This way, the text becomes easier to perceive. Overall, the secret to creating a top-notch academic piece is in making it logical, coherent, and engaging. An author’s goal is to make the narration seamless, so each part should naturally flow into the next one. To find out what is a discursive essay, memorize the outline and its contents.
Uses of punctuation marks is very important in proper essay writing. But many students often find it difficult to use it or some other details., and that's quite normal. Our team of experienced writers will help you to overcome these difficulties. If you need help with an essay, try our custom essay writing and make sure it's easy to use!

Introduction: How do you start a discursive essay?
Even though a discursive essay introduction takes up a small part of the whole paper, it is of immense importance. In short, the introduction helps a reader get acquainted with the work. Write an intro to cater both to you and your audience.
Compressing the general idea and its topicality into a couple of sentences requires talent. Brevity is the soul of wit! A discursive essay introduction is essential as it delivers the relevance of the problem to the public. What is more, a good introduction can spark an interest in the most indifferent people.
Main body: Arguments
Once you are done with the discursive essay introduction, it's time for the main body paragraphs. Analyzing numerous discursive essay examples helps in defining the main body principles. First, build the opening paragraph, since it contains an author’s opinion on the matter.
Secondly, take time to lay out the arguments and counterarguments. Dedicate separate paragraphs to every point. It is essential to start each paragraph with topic sentences. According to the discursive essay definition, your top priority is gathering information on the matter. Therefore, all the statements should have a reliable source like specific literature, statistics, personal examples, and other supporting evidence.
Besides, you can see a skilled writer from afar by the way they list their arguments. A high-quality layout tells a full-fledged story through main body paragraphs.
Conclusion: Summing up your thoughts
For the final part of every discursive essay, it's necessary to write a conclusion. Just like the discursive essay introduction, it assists in framing the main part. Here, a writer summarizes all the previous points and even states their personal opinion if needed. A crucial requirement is to reference only the mentioned arguments and avoid introducing new information.
Additionally, the purpose of a conclusion is to encourage future discussions among the readers. There is no better compliment than their desire to do further research. Some authors prefer to include their predictions on the essay topic. Again, all the assumptions should be based on relevant data.
Discursive essay topics: Best ideas
By all means, a beneficial discursive essay sample is a life-saver for a student. Luckily, there are tons of intriguing and entertaining discursive essay topics. Picking the subject that amazes you is the key to success! Here are a few discursive essay examples for creative writing.

  • Can traveling ever be sustainable?
  • Tote bags and metal straws: a drop in the sea or sufficient good for the planet?
Sport topics
  • The dark side of overexercising
  • How can we fight verbal and physical abuse from coaches?
  • Can you put E-sports in the same line as regular sports?
Culture topics

  • Do most companies use diversity just for profits and reputation points?
  • The importance of racial representation through skins in the metaverse

Conclusion
To sum up, a discursive essay helps people express their opinions on controversial topics and back up their statements. This type of work requires meticulous preparation and sticking to a set of particular rules. However, an author can get creative with the essay topic that sparks their interest. The Internet most likely contains a suitable discursive essay example.

Helping a Friend out with Ammonia/Cloudy Water, But They Aren't Available to Test/Treat Constantly (Help)
Here's a photo of the pool this morning!
I have a friend with a rectangular in-ground pool, running on a chlorinator, VS Pump and sand filter system with an auto-cover measuring 22,000 gallons. I used to take care of their pool as part of a service team, but now I'm off doing other fun career things. That said, I can't be there to take care of the pool as often as I would when I did it for a job. They are also at a 9-5 so they can't be there constantly to maintain the pool. Chemicals are currently reading as follows:
FCL: <1 ppm TCL: 3 ppm pH: 7.2 Alk: 150 CYA: 50 Phos: 5200
I suggested that they keep their pump running constantly, follow their normal routine maintenance, and make sure they're scrubbing down their pool before they treat this issue with calcium hypochlorite at night at 4x the normal dose. They're on their second treatment attempt with using 8 pounds of the stuff each time they treat the pool and the water isn't clearing up very much if at all. Currently treating on day 1, waiting on day 2 with the cover closed, treat again on day 3, wait again on day 4.
Just looking for some advice concerning whether they should let it keep working on itself, purchase a vacuum for their skimmer and go the Pool Floc route, or if they should continue trying to treat this chemically in the evening (and maybe switch to Liquid Chlorine to save money).

2023.06.09 15:58 justathoughtfromme OOP's former school is using their current picture on the school website without permission.

Reminder, I am not OOP. This is a repost.
TW: Transphobia
Original Post from May 16, 2023 - [US] [TX] My former school is claiming my parent's permission slip allows them fair use of my current work photo.
I went to middle/high school in Texas over a decade ago and don't currently live in that state. For personal reasons I have avoided all contact with anyone from the school, alumni association, former teachers, etc.
Recently, I learned that the school's website, Instagram and Facebook pages had posted my middle and high school photos as a composite with a portrait off my employer's website sort of like a "look where they are now" thing. The composite is part of the alumni landing page on the school website.
My work photo is of me wearing a distinctive uniform and name badge and is not particularly easy to find online, but it is somewhere on my employer's web directory. I do not have the same name and look significantly different now as compared to school photos.
My employer states they were never contacted by the school. My work uses a photography service with their own media release which explicitly requires written permission for any third party use.
I sent a polite e-mail to the school requesting the photos be taken down. The reply I got was to the effect of, "we wish you well but permission has been granted for 'fair use' as per the documents attached". They had sent a scanned PDF of a media release permission slip signed by my parent about 15 years ago, with a highlighted section stating "I irrevocably authorize [school] to use the Photograph or any print or digital alterations thereof for current or future publication". The photo file itself was also attached (all 3 images mashed together as one file) except a white bar had been added on the bottom with "Date: [date of middle school photo]".
Needless to say, this is ridiculous. I haven't yet replied to that e-mail.
Ever since the photo was posted, I have been getting unsolicited FB requests and DMs from people which I all ignore. Worse, my employer has started getting phone calls asking if [former name] works there. I feel very uncomfortable that my current profession and personal details are being promoted for the school without my permission. I really don't want anyone else from my hometown to connect my current and former lives.
I am looking for some guidance on who could help me sort this out and if it might be worth going to civil court for. A lawyer acquaintance told me that I could prove no damages but I'm not sure.
Thanks!!!
First Update - May 24. 2023
This will probably be the only update as I'm considering my next steps but I appreciated all the good advice I got the last time. recommended I ask my employers' photography service to contact my school with a DMCA notice. I did not reach out to the school directly. Someone from the the school's IT department replied to my email and not the photography service the next day. Their email was basically with their claims as below [I am paraphrasing because I don't want to use the exact language].
  • The photograph is the property of the school and they can do what they please with it.
  • The file properties (link to the screen shot is here) [Editor's note: transcription of image - Created: Saturday, July 17, 2004, 11:41:26AM, Modified: Saturday, July 17, 2004, 11:41:26AM, Accessed: Monday, September 13, 2010, 11:06:18AM] prove that the composite photo was taken in 2004 and per my parents release form, I disclaim all rights to it.
  • The school has an interest in promoting diversity and it is sad as a Transgender individual I would not want to stand up to Greg Abbot.
The email was signed with a clear mocking of my current title (like "John Smith, Vice President for Information Security").
The part of this that annoys me the most is that I am not Transgender. I could see why someone might think that, but I changed my name, appearance and so on because of unsavory connections to my family. I certainly do feel bad for Trans people in Texas but this isn't my fight. I don't think it will be useful to try and communicate further with the school. I have read that if a website ignores a DMCA takedown, I could try and have their website domain suspended. Would that be the route to go? I don't trust Texas civil courts but if push comes to shove I will go the formal route.
Thanks again.
Final Update - June 2, 2023
I'm providing an update because I think it's important to highlight all the excellent advice I received and I think honestly this should qualify for a bestoflegaladvice post. I had previously posted here and here (Note - removed links to previous posts) regarding a ridiculous situation in which my old school had used a middle school portrait, mashed together with my current work headshot, in a derogatory way on their website and social media.
Multiple commenters suggested that I engage my employer's photography service as well as my employer's legal department to help. They were very eager to do so. The photographers sent a DMCA complaint via social media forms and the offending posts were removed within 48 hrs! Unfortunately the school website is hosted by Cloudflare and they did not respond to the takedown request. However, my composite photo was moved off the main page and into a new section called "Diversity and Inclusion". This is where my employer's legal department was super helpful. They sent a communication to the school's legal division essentially saying that what I was experiencing is targeted harassments based on perceived sexual orientation or gender identity. Shockingly quickly we heard back with a profuse apology and promise for full investigation and possibly also disciplining the employee who was responsible for the photo, doctored file properties, website and email. On that topic, I found out that this person married into my family (who apparently thinks the reason I don't talk to them is because they think i am Trans) so that seems like their motive.

All in all, I think this is as good of an outcome as I could have hoped for. I don't think I will seek any damages but we'll see. I just want to thank everyone again. I was nervous posting this because it seems so silly, but I really am grateful.
Reminder, I am not OOP. This is a repost.

The Black Friday / Cyber MondayMEGA Issue Part 1

  • My “A-Z” roadmap for creating highly profitable Cyber Week email marketing campaigns.
  • The FIRST email you should send in the month of November, to increase the sales you make from every email you send for the next six weeks (I actually wrote this email for you. You can swipe it verbatim. Just swap in some small details about your business, hit send, and watch the sales start rolling in.)
  • How to map out a three-month promotional calendar in less than 60 minutes. (Plus, how to come up with the topics to send, on which days, to the right subscribers.)
  • What to do (instead of just giving a discount or giving a bonus) that’ll incite a buying frenzy, generate word of mouth buzz, create raving fans, AND could possibly lead to record-breaking sales.
  • A breakdown of a collection of BFCM emails, including some from a sequence that brought in six-figures in one week flat.
Course #4

Make It Rain Monthly Issue #9

The Black Friday / Cyber MondayMEGA Issue Part 2

  • The “Magic Box” Method I used to free up 25 hours of creative time on my calendar, so I could get more work done in less time, with less stress… and more time to myself.
  • The biggest mistake I made as I began growing my team… and how I fixed it so everyone could perform at a higher, more autonomous level.
  • How to finally get clear on what you want in life… and how to go get it.
  • Why trying to be a ‘cool boss’ might hurt your team more than help it.
  • One psychological insight that’ll make selling to ‘people with money’ 10x easier. This works especially well if you’re selling a high-end product/high-ticket service.
  • One software that can cut your weekly call volume down by 70% (or more).
  • The “AC” email promotion that’ll send your Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales through the roof.
  • How to scoop up TONS of sales from people who didn’t buy from your BF/CM campaign.
  • Why giving a discount might actually HURT your sales and turn off a large percentage of your customers.
  • When to use a discount vs other types of offers in your emails (they both work and can both be used strategically… but you’ve gotta do this right.)
  • How to instantly induce an “I’ve gotta spend money with this brand” feeling in your customers… even if they weren’t planning on buying anything five minutes before seeing your email.
  • A breakdown of a six-figure BF/CM email campaign (meaning: we actually ran this for one of my e-commerce clients and generated six-figures in sales with it).
  • A two-word subject line you can use on Black Friday to stick out like a sore thumb and get your subscribers’ attention… even when everyone else is screaming about their sales.
  • The one type of campaign you should run if you feel like offering discounts ‘cheapens’ your brand.
  • How to adapt this campaign for OTHER holidays throughout the year (like Mother’s Day & Father’s Day). I even riffed off a quick email hook you can keep in your back pocket until spring.
Course #5

Make It Rain Monthly Issue #20

The Black Friday / Cyber Monday2021 Gameplan

  • The SMS Sign Up Sequence that helped us grow an SMS list by 1,000+ subscribers while generating $10,000+ in sales.
  • How to make a TON of sales on Thanksgiving… without pissing off everyone on your list. (In fact, people will be giddy with anticipation if you do this promo right.)
  • A psychological trigger you can use in your copy that makes your customers go crazy for your products.
  • Why BFCM21 is going to look very different than years past… and the changes you should make to your strategy to stand out in the inbox (and make a ton of sales).
  • How the smartest marketers and brand owners are adapting to iOS14 and iOS15 (and the big shift you need to make to thrive).
  • Will SMS marketing replace or kill email? My surprising answer on page 3.
  • How to dramatically increase your EHR (effective hourly rate)… so you can increase profits while working less.
  • Insights from an SMS campaign I ran back in 2017 that worked incredibly well… and got people asking us to send them MORE texts (it’s a cool approach you can adapt for your own brand).
  • How to write headlines and subject lines that trigger INSTANT curiosity… that suck your prospects in and DEMAND attention. (Try this with your landing pages and advertorial pages and watch your click-thrus SKYROCKET)
  • The #1 copy mistake I see most copywriters and brand owners make with ALL of their emails, landing pages, ads, video scripts, and more.
  • Fix this one thing and you’ll be amazed at how much better your copy reads and converts.
  • How to get your customers to ‘think past the sale’ and get emotionally attached to your product… so they feel compelled to buy. (Sneaky… but powerful. And yes, totally ethical.)
  • 6 SMS messages that ‘primed the pump’ for our sales pitches… while making our customers feel a rush of positive thoughts and emotions.
  • The secret to writing tighter, pithier copy.
  • 3 copy principles for high converting SMS messages.
  • Two simple examples of an SMS list building campaign that you can whip up in a few minutes to start growing your list.
  • The Ultimate “Trojan Horse” campaign to get your customers primed and ready to buy from you for BFCM.
  • The Triple Threat BFCM campaign calendar you should try this Q4. (Could it triple your sales? Only one way to find out…)
  • What almost EVERYONE gets wrong about Gary Vee’s jab-jab-jab-right hook approach to marketing… and why it might be the smartest tactic to use come this Q4 (and beyond).
  • 5 more SMS list building examples that can get you a TON of new subscribers while making lots of “easy sales” in the process.
  • How to use email to ‘scoop up’ buckets of new buyers… even the people who DON’T buy from you.
  • Are you scared of emailing too often? Check out the tip on page 22 that’ll reduce your complaints and increase your sales.
  • The four core campaigns EVERY brand should be running on a monthly basis… even if you’re not in e-com. (I use this with my own list and it works incredibly well.)
Course #6

Holiday Sale Super Sequence

Want to scoop up even MORE sales during the holidays (without the hassle of figuring out your promo calendar)?
This Holiday Sale Super Sequence is based on campaigns I still run for my agency clients that generate anywhere between $30-$50K — without fail.
Comes with SIX email templates, a quick-start implementation video and super secret bonus.
So if you want to generate massive sales easily every time there’s a holiday… then this training is going to help you make that happen.
This sequence is PERFECT for BFCM… but you can even modify it to run other holiday sales throughout the year.

2023.06.09 15:51 Late_Violinist6815 40yo rookie 6 months in..

40yo rookie 6 months in..
I got into hvac by happenstance over the winter. I had recently left working for tier 1 auto parts manufacturer doing tool inspection and gage repair for nearly 15 years. I have small children and working 6-7 days a week second and third shift just wasn’t working for me anymore. Well my rental house furnace blower was acting up and it had been replaced less than a year ago. I knew the guy who I had do the work before through a friend. So he sends out his apprentice to replace it and while I’m chatting with him he informs me that it was his last day and that he had just got his degree in logistics and was moving on. I called up his boss man and asked to take his spot. Citing some of my skills and capabilities in learning the trade. I started the next Monday and I’ve really enjoyed most of it so far. It’s just the two of us. Boss man is 10 years my junior and I think that dynamic of him having the skill, knowledge and eagerness to help and teach while also working hard as the young guy he is with the life experience and knowledge I bring seems to work really well for us when coming up with solutions to problems and overall just working together. He gets a lot of really good work. He’s in with the lake community so we’re on all the new builds and servicing all these rich people. We do some smaller commercial stuff. A few restaurants and gyms. Set a few roof tops and such. I feel like because it’s just the two of us I do get exposed to alot of different things. I feel like I’ve been wildly lucky most of the time with service calls because often it’s the first time I’m encountering the issue, but somehow I always figure it out. Its a good feeling when that unit fires up after not 100% knowing if your diagnosis was right. I do enjoy when a customer is fully expecting to have to replace their equipment and when you walk out 30 minutes later, everything is running and they are so happy to be paying that $400 they tip you $100. Anyhow got sent out to do 90% of an install on my own the other day. Did everything but braze and charge the system. (Just haven’t learned those yet) House didn’t have ac prior so new circuit and all. Anyhow I’m really liking the work. But unfortunately I’m often not getting 40 hours. I get extra for service calls which is nice and makes up the difference sometimes. But as of now I’m at $20/hr and no sort of benefits. I felt it acceptable when I started as I knew little. Like I said I have kids and a family to support and I’m needing more. I’d really hate to jump ship and go to another company. Has to be a dozen I could count off the top of my head. But I almost feel like by this time next year I could be leading installs with my own helper and potentially work it out to make some good money. I love the area we work in and our clientele are great. I meet some really awesome people on the lake and even had my son with me on a call after picking him up from school last week. The lady took him down to the lake and played with him while I diagnosed and replace a capacitor. It’s those kind of days that keep me here over looking elsewhere. So I’m trying to do my best to make myself valuable enough to ask for more. I really don’t know what the pay is like for my position anywhere else. But I’m feeling like $25 isn’t to much to ask for. Especially once I learn the refrigerant side of things. For reference I’m in Michigan servicing the Fenton/Grand Blanc area primarily. Just south of Flint. I guess just looking for a little advice. I’ve considered doing the hvac bootcamp class and get my epa cert. it’s like $1500 but I know some local companies hire guys and pay for that class for them. What would you guys do? Stick it out with the smaller guy and try to grow with or jump ship for more stability and benefits?

2023.06.09 15:51 I_quite_like_tea Assistance dog has become nervous after being attacked

I live in the UK, so we refer to service dogs as assistance dogs here, just to clarify in advance. For context, I have a 7 year old cocker spaniel who has been working as my assistance dog for the past 5 years after going through two quite lengthy training programs. I have a neurological/developmental disorder as a result of a structural agenesis/defect in my brain and as a result can lose my ability to balance, speak clearly or complete other fine movements for varying periods of time with no notice. My dog has been trained for a few tasks, mostly to help with loss of dexterity but most importantly to alert me by strongly nudging my legs with her snout when she first detects signs of it so that I can sit down to prevent falls and if necessary take medications.
She has always been brilliant in public since starting 5 years ago and was not ever reactive to things like shopping trolleys, other dogs, loud noises etc and handled public transport and crowds very well too. The only criticism that she got (which I can’t say should be criticism) is that her tail was almost always wagging, I think it is very much a cocker thing and they were made to be working dogs, so given tasks, she was in her element.
Recently though, a family member was taking her on a morning walk for me and she was attacked by a large and very fast greyhound. This dog looked as if it would kill her and was biting and shaking her, running too fast for any of the people around to catch. My dog managed to break free and bolted back to my house, across a road but to safety, however was shaking uncontrollably for the rest of the day and whimpered the whole time when she was at the vets. She was luckily mostly uninjured apart from a few shallow puncture marks on her back and presumably bruising, she healed up completely with some antibiotics but unfortunately has become quite nervous in certain situations.
It has been almost a year since, however she now leaps out of the way from large moving objects like pushchairs or bikes, tugging as far on her lead as she can, she is also nervous around some big dogs but seems absolutely terrified of greyhounds and will stop what she’s doing and stand dead still with her tail between her legs and sometimes even barks at them. She is still performing her tasks well but she just no longer looks adequately trained to accompany me in assistance dog only spaces. As a result I haven’t been able to go anywhere like that alone and am hardly going out to the shops etc at all. I have only had her accompany me in dog friendly places or where I have received permission in advance.
I am not sure what to do at this point, the trainers that she was with to start with is not confident that they could re-train her, especially at 7 and everyone’s advice about time is somewhat helping but I still don’t feel comfortable with having her accompanying me everywhere, as she used to and that has severely limited me too.
Sorry for the long post, I just tried to mention everything important and give proper context. I don’t blame my dog’s reaction at all, I know that she must have been massively traumatised, so I need to prioritise her wellbeing and don’t want to try and force exposure for example. Does anyone have any advice they could give me on this or similar experiences? Thank you!

Still early but there’s an uptick in SF drug arrests [OC]
The city of San Francisco has committed to cracking down on drugs and other crimes recently. The sheriff’s office is also assisting but those arrests are not available. They do report daily jail count which may provide directional signal here https://www.sfsheriff.com/services/jail-services/current-and-historical-jail-data/current-jail-data-and-trends.

2023.06.09 15:49 Un-Mistakable I’m switching over to another service because of the Dashers in Tallahassee, Fl. Anyone else have problems in Tally?

I have ordered doordash for years, especially when I’m traveling and don’t have a car. However, I moved to Tallahassee and I have never had more problems. First off, I manager a restaurant and the dashers we get are so incredibly rude. It’s gotten to the point that we are advocating with our Corporate Office to shut the service down at least in our area because the people are abusive toward the staff and the other customers (had one tell an old lady to “get the fuck out” of her way because she was walking too slow as the dasher was trying to leave. On a more personal note, I also order from doordash and the dashers I have gotten are lazy, rude, or just won’t pay attention to what they’re doing and I’m sick of doordash penalizing me for it. For instance, this dasher marked my order as delivered so I went outside for it and it wasn’t there. I looked around and it definitely wasn’t, so I tried to call her multiple times to no answer. I marked the order as stolen and was going to order again when this car comes down the street with like 5 people in it and a girl hops out saying they couldn’t find my apartment. I went to doordash customer service to let them know I got my order and had to sign for the next few even though I didn’t do anything wrong, the only other time I asked for a refund was I waited an hour for food and they couldn’t even find a driver to assign to it because of how early in the morning it was. That girl was definitely trying to steal my food, my apartment sits right up by the road and isn’t obscured by anything, and the way it’s set up there is a staircase visible from my street that goes right up to my door and no one else’s. If you dash in Tally, what is going on? Why is it like this? Any other people in this area have these issues? I don’t think I’ll ever use doordash again, but I still want to know what is going on.

2023.06.09 15:49 baka-tari My first box of doorknobs

I started my military career in June of on Sand Hill at Fort Benning. I can still tell you the unit I was in for Infantry OSUT (One Station Unit Training), and the names of my Drill Sergeants . . . this knowledge is embedded in my DNA, it's like a cheap tattoo etched inside my eyelids. I will know I'm senile when I can't pop out those details at the drop of a hat.
It was in my 13 weeks of Basic Training and Infantry AIT where I first got acquainted with the wide range of colorful people I'd encounter in the Army. In my platoon we had delinquents who could barely get moral waivers that were battle-buddied with college boys who'd lived charmed lives; we had "old men" of 30 wanting to do their patriotic duty that were battle-buddied with kids so young and green they shaved twice a week whether they needed to or not. We had Active Duty, National Guard, Reserves and even a couple of MOS reclasses.
On top of all that, we had Waters.
Private Waters was born with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). His mom simply could not turn off the tap while she was pregnant with him - he carried that burden throughout his life. Folks with severe FAS have a look about them. Just as you can unfailingly recognize a person with Down Syndrome, you can look at a person with severe FAS and know it immediately.
Go ahead, take a minute to do a google image search on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome - you'll see what I mean.
♫ . . . . . the girl from Ipanema goes walking . . . . . . . ♫ . . .
Welcome back. See any features you recognize on someone you know? Explains a lot, doesn't it?
Severe FAS can result in problems with learning, memory, attention span, communication, vision, or hearing, among other things. Waters definitely had issues with the first four on that list.
Here's the thing, though: Waters wanted to be there at Infantry school. He volunteered to join the Army. He mustered enough concentration to take - and at least minimally pass - the ASVAB. I don't know what his score was, but it was enough.
Whenever someone gives me shit about soldiers being brainless, I have a canned response that's based in bitter personal experience: Yep, soldiers can be stupid, but you have to pass a test to get into the military. Any dumbass motherfucker can be a civilian.
We all knew that Waters needed some extra guardrails, and all of us in that basic training platoon stepped up to help him through. This could be a problem sometimes. For example, Private Tentpeg would walk past Waters in the morning and remind him to make his bunk before heading to formation. So Waters would start making his bunk. Then Private Snuffy would walk past, see Waters was making his bunk (and think to himself "Yay! Waters remembered to make his bunk today!") - then he'd remind Waters to square away his wall locker before heading down to formation.
Do you see where this is going?
Hearing Snuffy, Waters would go start to square away his wall locker. If you asked him in that moment if his bunk was good to go, he'd tell you it was, because he remembered that he had started to make it. He just couldn't remember if he had remembered to finish it. If he was then distracted by something else while working on his wall locker, he'd also insist that his wall locker was squared away, and for the same reason. If he looked at any of those items again, he might realize he needed to finish them, but he didn't operate well without either a really obvious visual cue or someone directing him. The latter usually produced better results.
He wasn't much better physically. To see Waters run, do pushup or situps, try jumping ja- . . . er, "side straddle hop" - or even march, tbh - the only phrase that came to mind was "like a monkey fucking a football." So. Much. Uncoordination. The final PT test almost sank his timely graduation.
In one instance, Waters came to me complaining that he was missing a button from his BDU blouse (BDU's? Fuck, I'm old). It wouldn't button up correctly, and could I give him a hand? I looked at it for a couple seconds and could see that he'd started with the wrong button in the bottom button hole. I calmly explained this to him and helped him correct his mistake. I'd learned early on it didn't do any good to get upset at Waters - he couldn't help it and yelling didn't fix the problem. He got a sheepish look on his face as I adjusted his buttons, was a little embarrassed, and said simply "I'm sorry, I get like that sometimes."
Me: I know, Waters. It's okay, we've got your back.
And that's just the thing - he knew. All his life, Waters knew he was a little short upstairs. But that didn't stop him from trying. He asked for help, he accepted the help, and he worked hard to overcome his limitations. On top of that he was a team player and he didn't shirk hard work. It was because of his attitude and commitment that the rest of us helped him along. We pushed, and pulled, and coached, and looked after him all the way through 13 weeks of Infantry training. In the end Waters met the standards - on his own and just barely - but goddamnit he graduated with the rest of us and didn't get recycled.
We weren't thinking about it at the time, just being fresh in the Army ourselves, but looking back I'm pretty sure there was a Squad Leader, a Platoon Sergeant, and a First Sergeant who were cursing us and our Drill Sergeants when Waters showed up at his first assignment. I never knew if, or how long, he lasted on active duty.
Sure, he was about as sharp as a box of doorknobs, and definitely frustrating sometimes, but he was our teammate and as long as he kept trying we weren't going to let him fail. That lesson of teamwork and cohesion stuck with me through 27 years of service, and I carry it still. I've known a lot smarter people who can't be bothered to put in half the effort that Waters did. I don't have time for them, but I will always help someone who is working hard to help themselves.

It's time to dive under the sea once again. Over the last few years, Disney has recreated their top animated musical films into live-action movies. The Little Mermaid is no different, and viewers can't wait to swim into theaters to catch a glimpse of how the movie will stand up against the original version.
The latest of Disney's hugely successful line of live-action remakes, Ariel (Halle Bailey) is set to return to theaters for the first time in almost thirty-five years with The Little Mermaid (2023). The Walt Disney Company once again invites audiences to travel under the sea to see Princess Ariel's story unfold like never before. Featuring direction from veteran musical filmmaker Rob Marshall and other roles inhabited by major Hollywood stars like Melissa McCarthy as Ursula the Sea Witch and Javier Bardem as King Triton, the film is bound to be a bona fide hit at the box office.

Though the upcoming and highly anticipated film will have stiff competition against two stand-up comedians on the weekend it releases, The Little Mermaid is destined to show that life is better down where it's wetter under the sea this Summer movie season. The 2023 live-action movie will only be available in theaters starting May 26. That means if you want to watch it ASAP.
However, it will be available to stream on the Disney+ platform soon. Disney+ typically follows a 90-day period before its theatrical releases come to the streaming platform. That means we may see the live-action version of "The Little Mermaid" come to Disney+ as early as August 2023.
Before we ask if you're interested in seeing this, we know you are. But like us, you're probably wondering how to watch and stream The Little Mermaid online. Luckily, we have some clues and it's likely to land on a major streaming site very soon. So climb aboard, because here's where to watch and stream The Little Mermaid online.
Ariel's quest to go from a mermaid into a human begins anew when The Little Mermaid premieres this Memorial Day Weekend on Friday, May 26th, 2023. The film will be going up against not one, but two stand-up comedians and their films that weekend, with Sebastian Maniscalco's About My Father and Bert Kreischer's The Machine premiering on the same day. That said, The Little Mermaid will almost certainly be the choice for younger audiences and families.
While some Disney films are heading straight to Disney+, The Little Mermaid will first be shown exclusively in theaters.
As of now, the only way to watch The Little Mermaid is to head out to a movie theater when it premieres on May 26, 2023. You can find a local showing on Fandango.

Otherwise, you’ll just have to wait for it to become available to rent or purchase on digital platforms like Amazon, Vudu, YouTube or Apple, or become available to stream on Disney+.
At the moment, you can watch The Little Mermaid at your local theater. But like most movies these days, it should hit a streaming website in the near future.
Like its predecessor, The Little Mermaid is a flick produced by multimedia conglomerate Disney. What's more, the production studio owns a number of other famous franchises, like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars. Titles made under these umbrellas have both hit Disney+ sometime after arriving at the box office. Fans may also know the original Little Mermaid is currently available to stream on the site as well. So, if the 2023 version follows the same pattern, folks will likely get to see The Little Mermaid on Disney+ later this year too.
As for an exact release date for The Little Mermaid, that's more complicated. Most movies produced by Disney often go to its streamer site within three months after debuting in theaters, like the most recent Marvel film Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. If this is the case for The Little Mermaid, it will probably drop in late August 2023 or sometime near Labor Day in early September.
When the time comes for The Little Mermaid to splash onto Disney+ though, make sure you're all prepared to watch it. If you don't have access yet, you can opt into a 30-day free trial before choosing a plan that start at $7.99 per month or $79.99 per year. After your account is all set, click on the title page on Disney+'s official website or the Disney+ app.
As you wait for The Little Mermaid to hit the streamer, why don't you watch the animated version and its sequel The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea? Or if you want to immerse yourself in another live-action version, click on the 2019 ABC TV special The Little Mermaid Live!. Enjoy!
Unlike several of Disney's other live-action remakes such as Pinocchio and Peter Pan & Wendy, The Little Mermaid will be exclusively in movie theaters first with tickets available for pre-sale now.
After The Little Mermaid has completed its exclusive theatrical run, the film will be released on the Disney+ streaming service. Based on Disney's past release models, the film won't be made available to stream before 45 to 90 days after its theatrical release.
Now that movie theaters seem to be back, The Little Mermaid live-action film will be an in-theater release first before being released to at-home video. That means that your only chance to watch it right now is by going to your local theater.
However, don't lose all hope. Since it's a Disney movie, it will eventually make its way over to Disney+ after a few months on the big screen. It will also be available on other streamers like Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, Google Play, and more to rent and own at your leisure.
If you're hoping to get your mermaid kick in now, then you can tune into the original The Little Mermaid which is available on Disney+ and other streaming services including Amazon Prime Video, iTunes, and the Google Play store.
The 2023 version of The Little Mermaid will only be in theaters initially. After The Little Mermaid has completed its exclusive theatrical run, it is likely to stream on Disney Plus. You can also watch the animated version of Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale of Ariel on Disney Plus now.
While you will only be able to catch the new "The Little Mermaid" in theaters starting next Friday, you can still sign up for Disney+ now to refresh yourself on the characters, song, plot and magical fun from the highly anticipated film. The 1989 version of the movie was a catalyst for Disney's animation renaissance throughout the '90s and it still holds up today.
An ad-supported Disney+ subscription starts at $8 per month, but you can get an ad-free access to the service for $11 monthly or bundle the Disney streaming service with Hulu and ESPN+ starting at $13 per month. Disney+ boasts a huge collection of movies and television series, including Marvel and Star Wars content. If you add in Hulu and ESPN, you have nearly unlimited entertainment at your fingertips.
When will The Little Mermaid be streaming on Disney+?
The Little Mermaid Disney+ premiere date is tentatively estimated to be Aug. 30, 2023.
While no official Little Mermaid streaming date has been confirmed by Disney, most of its major movie releases drop on Disney+ following a minimum 90-day period, and typically premiere on the platform on Wednesdays, making Wednesday, Aug. 30 the most likely date for Disney’s The Little Mermaid live-action streaming release.
Is The Little Mermaid streaming on Netflix?
No, The Little Mermaid will not be on Netflix — at least not any time soon. In the meantime, you’ll just have to head out to a movie theater or wait for it to become available to stream on Disney+.
Will The Little Mermaid Be On HBO Max?
No, The Little Mermaid will not be on HBO Max since it’s not a Universal Pictures movie. Last year, the company released its films in theaters and on the streamer on the same day. However, they now allow a 45-day window between the theatrical release and the streaming release.
Is The Little Mermaid Available On Hulu?
Viewers are saying that they want to view the new animation movie The Little Mermaid on Hulu. Unfortunately, this is not possible since Hulu currently does not offer any of the free episodes of this series streaming at this time. It will be exclusive to the MTV channel, which you get by subscribing to cable or satellite TV services. You will not be able to watch it on Hulu or any other free streaming service.

There are a few ways to watch The Little Mermaid online in the U.S. You can use a streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. You can also rent or buy the movie on iTunes or Google Play. You can also watch it on-demand or on a streaming app available on your TV or streaming device if you have cable.
The Little Mermaid Cast and Characters
The Little Mermaid was written by David Magee and directed by Rob Marshall. It stars the following actors:
Halle Bailey as Ariel
Melissa McCarthy as Ursula
Javier Bardem as King Triton
Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina
Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric
Daveed Diggs as Sebastian
Awkwafina as Scuttle
Jacob Tremblay as Flounder
Art Malik as Sir Grimsby
What is The Little Mermaid About?
The official synopsis for The Little Mermaid by Walt Disney Studios read:
“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
There is not much mystery in The Little Mermaid's plot. As seen in Disney's many other live-action remakes, it is anticipated that the film's plot will largely stick to the original. With the well-known song "Part of Your World," in which Ariel sings about her wish to be a part of the world beyond the water, i.e., the human realm, the teaser already alluded to Ariel's fascination with the human world. Fans will get to see Ariel and Prince Eric's romance as they deal with the challenges posed by their differences.

2023.06.09 15:43 purepwnage85 Got called out doing 480kts in my A380

Got called out doing 480kts in my A380
Now before anyone says anything, I'm a First Officer with Emirates, so obviously I can afford the gen, but my wife won't let the AD take her out on a date so I'd be waiting until retirement to get a gen hulk.
So, last Friday I was doing my usual EK215 service from DXB to KLAX, we were flying over northern California and I was dreaming about spending a few days at Venice beach over the weekend oogling women with fake tits and trying to impress them with my hulk sub and the fact the I'm a pilot.
Short while into my daydream the Captain tells me to wake the fuck up and get on to tower for the landing clearance and vectors. This startled me and I somehow hit my knee off the yoke which cancels the autopilot put the plane into a dive. The captain starts shouting at me but before he had finished I managed to get the wings level and everything was fine. The whole ordeal lasted about 20 seconds.
The next thing I hear on the coms is someone on the guard frequency saying "Speedbird 1604 heavy PAN-PAN PAN-PAN PAN-PAN".
For people not familiar with flying, guard frequency is for emergencies but 99% of the time it's a bunch of losers in cesnas making meow sounds and saying en-guard.
Anyway, I'm like, shit this is fucking serious so I respond, "Speedbird 1604 this is EK215 heavy we receive you loud and clear please tell us the nature of your distress and we will relay to the tower"
Few seconds pass and I'm shitting myself thinking some English gentleman flying a 777 or A380 might be swimming in the Pacific.
We soon get another coms. "Speedbird 1604 heavy this is KLAX tower please state the nature of your emergency"
Then the English gentleman comes on again "This is Speedbird 1604 heavy I repeat PAN-PAN PAN-PAN PAN-PAN, our first officer is disoriented, it seems he was blinded by the reflection off of a fake rolex worn by someone flying an Emirates A380, requesting immediate vectors back to KLAX and emergency vehicles on standby"
The communication continued while my face turned a beetroot red.
"Speedbird 1604 heavy this is KLAX tower please proceed to heading one eight zero left to intercept the localazier, and when able please tell us the souls on board and fuel remaining. Emirates 215 heavy, when able please take down this phone number and make contact when on ground on LAX"
At this point I was shitting myself and didn't fking know what to say so I kept my mouth shut. Again, for people unfamiliar with flying, when tower gives you a number to take down, this means you're in deep, DEEP, DEEP SHIT. I kept hiking I should have done a gen or deep xtal swap while the captain was giving me the Bert stare from Bert and earnie.
My captain picks up the coms and on the guard frequency announces "Speedbird 1604 heavy this is EK215 heavy, I apologise for the incompetence of my first officer and this should be a lesson to everyone, we should be buying gen rolexes." At the moment he same time all I can hear on the guard frequency is a bunch of losers flying cesnas making meow sounds and bragging about how even they can afford a gen Rolex. The captain then proceeds to tell me it's my job to contact the number tower gave me and he won't be backing me up in any way shape or form.
Once we land, I found out that the English gentleman announced to the whole flight the reason for the delay was my fake rolex and how they wouldn't be getting home until the next day. I was prepared to be stoned and lashed when I landed at LAX, all for wearing a VSF Sub.
After we land, I called the number tower gave me, the guy on the other end asked me if I was the first officer who forced the BA pilot to make an emergency landing because of the reflection off my fake rolex. I swallow a giant lump down my throat. He announces he's the manager of the beverly hills rolex dealership and has an appointment for me to come in the next day. Apparently he has some OP's in stock and I can have my pick.

2023.06.09 15:36 MyopicChihuahua86 "They knew love. What you taught them was an education in unrelenting cruelty."

https://youtu.be/qFbvLYFZbxM
I said goodbye to the church for good when I learned about residential schools -- really, truly learned about them from talking to survivors.
My grandfather, who I never got to know, was Cree. But even if I had no Indigenous blood, just by being a decent human, and especially by being a mother (I cannot fathom the despair I would sink to if my children were forcibly taken from me) I can never forgive the church for residential schools.
I do not accept the church's apology, which mentioned all kinds of abuse but totally ignored any mention of sexual abuse (I'm a journalist and I covered that old decrepit man's apology in depth). They are still not holding themselves accountable to this day.
A lot of people in Canada like to complain about Indigenous people -- about their addictions, about their other issues -- and its so sickeningly entitled I can't stand it. The church ripped families apart, took part in genocide and performed horrific abuse on these children. When they were sent back to their families, they had lost everything -- their language, their sense of belonging, their culture, their spirituality, their way of relating to their families and communities. No trauma services were offered. No healing programs were ready to help. Is it any wonder, to deal with the pain, the unimaginable pain, people turned to alcohol and drugs -- things which were introduced to them by colonizers often to their detriment? Is it any wonder this trauma is passed down generation to generation?
Indigenous people in Canada have far more grim health outlooks and life expectancies, are over represented in prisons, and are far more effected by violent crime. The blame lies at the feet of the government and the Catholic church, as well as the other churches that took part, such as the United, Presbyterian and Anglican churches. But only the Catholic church refuses to admit full culpability.
I wish that the racists who are alive and well in Canada -- don't let our friendly reputation fool you -- would think of that before passing judgement on "another drunk Indian." The strongest of them would crumble to dust when faced with what they were faced with.

2023.06.09 15:35 Elorie Reddit Protest - r/DatingOverThirty is participating

Cheers DOT folks.
The mod team has been discussing the upcoming Reddit protest all week, and as several of you have requested updates via ModMail, we thought we'd share our decision with the community. We wanted to discuss these matters internally ourselves first, to make sure we were on the same page before we made any sort of announcement.
TL/DR: DOT goes private from June 12th through 14th. Mods on vacation. Mayhem ensues.
By now I suspect most have heard about the open letter and API pricing. Even if it doesn't affect you directly, it will impact many of the ways Reddit currently functions. If you are not sure what this even is, I direct you to some folks who explain it far better than I could. In an easy way to understand, this is what API is and why this is change is a problem. AskHistorians explains in detail why so many Mods are upset, disillusioned and/or angry, in the wake of the Admin announcement.
To a lot of people, the API changes are not a big deal and might not be noticed. If you use the official app and it works for you, that’s great. You may not have known that third party apps existed, or why people prefer them. Some of our Mod team do use third party apps, both for casual browsing and for moderation. Others don’t. For us, this is not just about our personal preferences; it is about standing in opposition to ableism and making sure others have a voice.
Latest updates
If you’re thinking "These apps make a profit, so they should share some with Reddit," we absolutely agree! The issue many users have is the prices. It's near 10-20x more than similar services which means these apps will have to shut down. Apollo has been the scapegoat in some ways, but Narwhal, Relay, RIF, BaconReader, Boost and Slide have all issued statements that they are shutting down.
Before you ask “why can’t they just run ads to cover costs”, Reddit has decided this will not be an option. Even if a third party app manages to survive July 1st through a subscription based model alone, those apps will not have all the same content as the Official App. Namely, despite paying for the privilege of having a choice, NSFW content will be unavailable and invisible to those users.
WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU
Most mods use third party apps because the tools are light years better, and we're not swamped with ads. Despite the hate mail we get, us mods generally don't live in your mom's basement but have full time jobs, families and mod on our lunch breaks, after hours or other free time. We do this work because we care about the community. The switch forcing moderators to use the official app would slow down moderation and force more of the work to happen on desktop. That means your posts and comments will sit in queue unseen longer, it will take longer to get back to modmails, and harmful/illegal content or users may remain visible and unbanned for longer. In discussions with other mods, these changes will probably cripple most NSFW content on the website. On a third party app, we can accomplish in two clicks what would take the Official App five. Though Reddit has made strides in improving them, there is a long way to go. Even with uBlockOrigin and my mobile browser it's tough to mod. Plus you should be aware that Reddit has already been testing functions which eliminate mobile web browsing, and there is no guarantee that your preferred method of using Reddit won’t be next. (Where my Old Reddit fans at?)
FURTHER ISSUES
Some people cannot use the official apps. Blind users especially (but others who need accessibility features) may not be able to access Reddit have challenges. For blind moderators, it can be difficult to impossible to find the moderation functions necessary, as well any layouts customizations necessary. This is the gap third party apps have happily stepped in to fill, and lived in harmony for years this way. These changes will also significantly impact volunteer run transcription subreddits, which allow visually impaired Redditors to read text images, and receive descriptions of visual content such as videos and images. These volunteers are indispensable to the blind community, because Reddit is the only social media website with no support for alternative text (though they may be working on that). Remember, NSFW content will be unavailable to regular users on third party apps, and yes, disabled people like porn too!
(NB: as of publishing this post - there is an article out on Verge from yesterday the that says Reddit will be making exceptions in the API policy for accessibility users, but no details yet. )
For many of us third party apps are just an option, but for some they are a necessity. We are of the opinion that pricing these apps out of existence before Reddit has a solution is passive discrimination. While there is much speculation why Reddit wants to take away the voices of those who are blind, or otherwise need accessibility or transcription accommodations, the plain fact is, that flies in the face of the tolerance and anti-discrimination the mod team here has always tried to stand up against. Limiting user choice, charging exorbitant and predatory fees, and refusing to communicate, are all significant problems that the mod team here takes issue with. We quietly have worked to make the sub more accessible (and would welcome additional feedback via modmail if you have suggestions), so this is deeply disappointing to us.
SUMMARY
We are prepared to remain blacked out for a minimum of 48 hours. This means that no one will be able to access any DOT content until the blackout is over. In standing up for the voices of others, however, we don’t want to strip away the voices of our community. So now we want to hear from you. If you support us in this decision, please share and upvote this post, and comment with your support.

2023.06.09 15:33 NightBard Reminder: Peacock Premium $20/yr deal ends 6/12

This is for new accounts. The code is: SUMMEROFPEACOCK
https://www.peacocktv.com/
I figure since cordcutters is going dark 6/12 today is probably a good day to remind people and all other threads about this have fallen a few pages down.
On a related note, xfinity internet customers that are not on the 1000Mbit speed service are losing access on 6/26. So this is likely the best replacement for when the Premier League pops back up in a few months unless they do a $0.99/mo deal around Thanksgiving (though I don't mind just rolling the dice now knowing there's no reoccuring charge every month).
While I enjoy the soccer coverage which has no commercials during each 45 min half, the new release movies are a solid value since they only have about 2 min of commercials before the movie and then are commercial free. Today Renfield was posted. That movie was great if you have any interest in the vampire genre and like a bit of comedy mixed in. Everything else on there is a bonus to me. Like "The Resort" was a really great show for it's season and was remarkably fresh for the mystery genre.
