2023.04.01 05:10 an-asian-man Tongzhi Living, Chapter 1, "A Cultural History of Same-Sex Desire in China" (2015)
Access: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ip2RFRpNo90bFuNplMbDy9F1A1P69M6V/view?usp=sharing Chapter Highlights: Introduction to Homoerotic Relationship in Imperial China - Homoerotic relationships were considered natural, were common, and were widely accepted in Chinese society during the imperial period.
- Classical Chinese medicine did not view the human body in binary terms as either male or female; every individual contained elements of both female and male gender, as represented by the symbols of yin and yang. Hence representations of sex and gender were unfixed and indefinite.
- There was no category of “perversion” in Chinese medicine and medical literature, and the Chinese tradition viewed homoerotic relationships in a positive light. The Western concepts of “unnatural” sexual acts, perversion, and psychologically deviant personality were not associated with same-sex acts.
- Homoerotic romance was by no means construed as antithetical to Confucian family ethics. Rather, it was considered to adhere to Confucian family ethics, because it did not conflict with heterosexual marriage and child-rearing responsibilities.
- Classical Chinese language had no term to denote a person who engaged in same-sex acts. Nor was there any identification of a particular sexual identity, sexual essence, or sexual orientation. The language distinguished same-sex behavior from same-sex identity, using poetic metaphors based on ancient same-sex love stories to refer to same-sex actions, tendencies, and preferences rather than to an innate sexual essence (e..g, yu tao and duan xiu). Another category describing same-sex love invoked specific social roles such as “favorites,” rather than sexual essence.
Records of Homoerotic Relationship in Imperial China - The earliest recorded homoerotic relationships between emperors and their male favorites are from the Zhou Dynasty (1122–256 b.c.). Men were free to admire other men and engage in homoerotic relationships. Extramarital heterosexual relationships for men were also accepted. In the Western Han (187–180 b.c.), ten of the eleven emperors either had at least one male favorite or had homoerotic relationships with palace eunuchs (Ruan 1991).
- Folk songs, poetry, tales, and art recounted stories of homoerotic relationships in the imperial court and among scholars and officials in the Han and later dynasties. Spring-Autumn Annals reveals the jealousy of rival male beauties, stories of homoerotic love in the royal court, favorites’ fears of being replaced, and the successful use of homoerotic seduction as a political and military weapon (Ruan 1991). These latter two books were both required readings by Confucius.
- The late Ming (1368–1644) “libertinism” gave rise to more widespread and less bounded sexual expression that included homoerotic sentiments, which epitomized the newfound sexual pleasure among men of every social class. A literature on homoerotic themes and pornographic materials emerged and flourished. Many literati were so swept away by the romantic images of homoerotic love that a vogue developed in which elite men patronized boy actors as male prostitutes (catamites) and household entertainers. As young men served elite males as entertainers, servants, and male prostitutes, long-term romantic relationships often formed that consolidated the elite men’s status, power, and cultural taste; their presence was emblematic of the hosts’ wealth, prestige, status, and aesthetic taste. Scholars bragged about their enjoyment of catamites in their writings
- In the Qing Dynasty (1368–1911), homoerotic sentiments developed into a cultural, aesthetic taste, a status symbol, and “an extreme form of romantic idealism,” especially in Beijing. The intensely patriarchal quality of the Qing Dynasty reinforced the flourishing same-sex sentiment. Homoerotic practices received even more widespread acceptance and enjoyed “a more central and stable role in cultural life” because the larger social environment held men who had relationships with other men in high esteem. Men interacted with each other in their social circles, exchanging ideas and appreciation of art and cultural tastes. Such social relationships among men were a fundamental part of the social and cultural life in the Qing Dynasty.
- Homoerotic romance between men who shared equal status and similar age was a marginal form of same-sex relationship, although it was present across class in late imperial China (C. Wu 2004). For instance, in Fujian, male-to-male marriages, called “contract brothers” (qi xiongdi), were endorsed by their parents, relatives, and friends. The marriages traditionally lasted until the age of thirty, when the men left their male partners and married female brides. During the Qing Dynasty, although same-sex relationships were culturally acceptable, there was legal bias toward homoerotic romance between equals, but rarely toward same-sex relationships between men of different classes (C. Wu 2004). More particularly, legal statutes targeted relationships between lower-class men. Legal documents reflected the belief that an equal-status same-sex relationship was impossible because a power hierarchy was at the core of the relationship between the penetrator and the penetrated (Sommer 2002; C. Wu 2004).
Republican Era (1912–49) - The onslaught of Western ideas at the turn of the twentieth century overturned the fluid and indeterminate representation of sex and gender in classical Chinese medicine.
- The national crisis and the determination to modernize China prompted intellectuals to translate and introduce Western knowledge into China, including Western concepts of homosexuality. The direct translation of the term “homosexuality”—tongxinglian—emerged in the Chinese language in the 1930s. The Western pathologized view of homosexuality came into China along with the translation and spawned a reconfigured interpretation of homoerotic relationships as immoral, deviant, decadent, and, ultimately, the cause of a weak nation.
- ...What was once an emblem of aesthetic culture and social status was transformed into a reprehensible and disgraceful practice that came to be seen as one of many causes of a weak nation. Following the Western intrusion into China and the colonizing countries’ treatment of the Chinese as second-class citizens, the national crisis brought forth several popular movements that offered a scathing cultural critique on which to build a modern, strong nation. This cultural critique attacked male homoeroticism as the epitome of the many fundamental flaws in Chinese culture.
- In the early twentieth century, gender differences, for the first time in Chinese history, were defined in biological terms. The biological and unitary category of women—nuxing (female sex)—was created during the May Fourth Movement in 1919. For the first time in Chinese history, there was a word meaning biological woman (Barlow 1994).
- Aspiring to emulate what was conceived as the Western modern concept of gender identity, Chinese intellectuals asserted heterosexual masculinity as a means to empower and strengthen the nation. According to them, men should represent the strength, domination, and civilization of a nation. They relegated men in homoerotic relationships to the status of women, weak and feeble. To build a strong nation, intellectuals needed to turn the female-role actors from emasculated victims to heterosexual men so they could reclaim their masculinity.
- As part of this reconstruction of gender and sexuality to build a strong nation, sexual desires were strictly regulated (Dikotter 1995). Individuals were called upon to discipline their sexual desires. Prostitution and pornography were denounced and attacked, along with sexual practices such as premarital and extramarital sex, masturbation, and same-sex practices.
- That same-sex practices and sexual meanings took on different political and cultural meanings at this time—changing from a symbol of status and taste for elite men to a symbol of a weak nation—once again reveals that they are shaped and produced by the cultural and political context instead of by biology.
Maoist Period (1949–77) - The Maoist era enforced a heterosexual, marital, and reproductive sex model wherein sex was only legitimate for reproductive purposes within marriage. Family was emphasized as the basic cell of society, and marriage was highlighted as a social cause and the fulfillment of a social responsibility to produce children for the Communist state. Those who did not marry, did not have children, or divorced were condemned as socially irresponsible and harmful to the socialist state.
- In the absence of laws against consensual same-sex acts, same-sex acts were subject to a wide array of administrative and disciplinary sanctions under the charge of “hooliganism” (Y. Li 2006). Hooliganism was a general term that encompassed myriad forms of offenses and was often invoked to punish same-sex-attracted individuals. It was reported that many men were charged with the crime of hooliganism during the Maoist era. However, at times, a hospital certificate of a diagnosis of same-sex love illness could potentially lift the criminal charge.
- During the Cultural Revolution (1966–76), same-sex-attracted people were classified as “bad elements” under the “five black categories,” along with landlords, rich peasants, counterrevolutionaries, and rightists (Geyer 2002). On discovery of their same-sex acts, individuals received harsh criticisms, interrogation, and penalties. Some were beaten to death, and others were driven to commit suicide. Administrative punishments included harassing, detaining, persecuting, and reforming individuals through education or labor, whereas disciplinary sanctions often meant withholding wages and suspending Party membership (Y. Li 2006).
Pots-Socialist Period (1978–Present) - One of the unintended consequences of the one-child policy implemented in 1980 was to acknowledge sexual pleasure between married couples after the birth of one child. The postsocialist era recognizes the importance of sexual pleasure within marriage because it maintains marital harmony and thwarts extramarital affairs; harmonious conjugal families are critical to secure social stability and state control.
- The reconfigured sexual meanings, sexual revolution, and the state’s loosening control led to growth in the number of self-identified gay men who gathered at parks, street corners, bathhouses, bars, and toilets. It was reported that such gatherings started as early as 1978 and 1979 at certain places such as Xidan Park in Beijing (Geyer 2002).
- Bowing to the pressure to marry and produce progeny, more than 90 percent of same-sex-attracted people in China are estimated to choose to marry opposite-sex partners and form heterosexual families with children (Liu and Lu 2005; X. Xuan 2010). Young people were usually able to engage in same-sex relationships because the market economy provided them with an opportunity to delay marriages until their late twenties and mid-thirties. However, these relationships were difficult to sustain because both parties were aware that they would eventually forsake the other to marry an opposite-sex partner and bear a child.
- Despite the market reform and rule of law, the Chinese police continued to apprehend, interrogate, and detain people for engaging in same-sex acts (Y. Li 2006). Crackdown campaigns targeted same-sex behaviors and centered on places where same-sex-attracted people tended to congregate, such as public parks and toilets. Stories circulated among same-sex-attracted people about police brutality, including vicious beatings, humiliations, threats of public exposure, and deliberate intimidation. The 1996 film East Palace, West Palace (Yuan Zhang 1996) vividly captured police harassment and brutality toward same-sex-attracted men who congregated in public toilets.
- Scholarly works about homosexuality started emerging during the 1980s and 1990s, but the major concern of many books was to cure and treat homosexuality. On the one hand, these works broke the taboo on discussing this topic and made the public aware that same-sex attraction existed in Chinese society. On the other hand, they were harmful in ascribing attributes of illness and deviance to same-sex-attracted people.

Chevy Malibu or Cobalt for first car?
I'm getting my first car, and I have the choice between a 2008 Chevy Malibu and a 2005 Chevy Cobalt. I like the extra space and features of the malibu more (heated seats, sunroof, etc), but I've heard the cobalt is more reliable overall. So what do you think would be the better car?
The 2008 Chevy Malibu has a 4 Door Sedan base, 228,376 km or 141,906 miles, door actuators need to be replaced, brand new battery and alternator. The 2005 Chevy Cobalt has a 4 Door Sedan base as well, 178,074 km or 110,650 miles, actuators need to be replaced, washer fluid doesn't work, and engine light is always on (unknown cause). Cost isn't an issue, for the sake of the question let's say they cost the same.

2023.04.01 02:31 ntn005 Do salesmen make money off trades?
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am really curious. My 2020 BMW 330 lease is up in May so I took it to the dealership today for a “pre-inspection” to see what I should get repaired before turning it in. Even though it has a small chip on the windshield, the dealer offered to pay off the remaining balance of my lease (residual + April monthly payment) since they need inventory. I know the dealer would not offer this unless there were profit in it (I am assuming they will sell the car for more than they pay for it). My question is does the salesman get a cut of the profit for convincing me to sell the dealership my vehicle as opposed to selling it elsewhere like Carmax?
For more detail, the remaining balance of my lease is 30700. Carmax is offering me 31500 so I guess I could pay it off and sell to Carmax and make 800 but I dont think it is worth my time. Plus if the BMW salesman gets a cut I would like to help him out since he was an awesome dude. I will probably go back to him when I am ready to buy another vehicle but for now I am not looking for a replacement.

2023.04.01 00:02 benjaminbuttars 2002 2500HD wiper cowl
I had a windshield replaced and just noticed that they broke my center wiper cowl. I looked online and can find the two side “cap” portions made by dorman, but wanted to see if anyone had any aftermarket groups other than the standard pick and pull junkyard.
Also trying to find part numbers for the 5 or so flat clips that secure the cowl to the truck sheet metal.

2023.03.31 23:33 Flamewalker_hs My story
Groceries
It was a dark morning. The moon shone a thick veil of shadow over the tall grass of the town that John called his home; the rain, in its heavy pours, gave the grass its daily bread. He had a list, and he had friends to help him. He’d been thinking about this all day, dreading the moment up to the car ride there. The windshield wiper of his 1998 crown victoria was working overtime, in fact, the entire car was in over its head.
One of the friends pipes up “come on Johnny, it's just the convenience store. How bad could it possibly be?”. The sound of The Encyclopedia's voice was soothing; his words gave John a sense of serenity. That’s why he was riding shotgun
“That sounded like a challenge to me!”. The Derelict’s laughter pierced throughout the car, immediately undoing all the hope The Encyclopedia gave John just seconds earlier.
“I HATE going to the STORE, I just want to THROW EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE.” Yelled the rage. John chuckled a bit thinking about the idea of knocking a shelf over and having all the items on the floor. He then realized that it could be a reality and stopped smiling.
The Empath, wanting to help John, said “it’ll be ok John, I'm here for you.”. The empath smiled at John and he saw this through the rearview mirror. John smiled back for a second but returned to his monotone expression, attempting to see through the heavy rain.
“Quit your talking, we’ll be there soon. Sit there and be quiet for just 2 minutes”. Shouted The Authority. Everyone in the car started staring straight forward except The Derelict, who crossed his arms and mumbled under his breath. As the rain got heavier, the store grew near. Before they knew it, John slammed the gearbox. The car has stopped.
When John came closer to the automatic doors, he stuttered. He clutched the list as though it would save his life. The Derelict pushed John, causing him to stumble into the building. Without missing a beat the doors glided back to their starting point, marking a point of no return. He walked in, swept his gaze around the store, then made his way to an aisle.
As he approached the first item on his list, milk, he started looking around. “What is the difference between the percentages of milk anyway?” John exclaimed. The Encyclopedia snapped back “The number is how much milk fat is in a jug of milk, for example-”
“I HATE MILK!” Screamed The Rage. John sighed. He then reached for a jug of whole milk. “Oh whole milk, real fattening; I like it.” said The Derelict rubbing his hands together. The Authority quickly replied, “ No, we get the whole, it tastes better”. The gang moved on.
John gazed at the list once more and approached the next item. He approached the eggs. As he grabbed a dozen his mind started to wander. He looked around at everyone in the store and questioned “How come everyone looks so composed?”. “You should kill them” whispered the rage. This action sent shivers down John's spine as he realized he said that out loud and he rushed to the next item, fruit.
Growing closer to the fruit he saw all of the colors and looked deep inside himself and the walls of the aisle slowly turned into the complex wooden walls of a courtroom. The juxtaposition of the two made John jump but it all felt unusually familiar.
“Court is officially in session. Mr. Derelict, how do you plea to the accusations of high treason?” Belted out The Authority.
“Listen, I don't know what you think I’ve done but without me, no fun would be had. You can't get rid of me!” Shouted The Derelict. “
“Guilty or not guilty, say one before I charge you with contempt of court too”.
“Fine, not guilty”
“You know I’m really worried for him. I don't think he’s this bad.” said The Empath. John thought deeply about whether or not this was warranted and what The Derelict meant to him. If he had yesmen all around him, would he have even entered the grocery store? He stared longingly at one knot in the wooden wall; fixing his gaze on it while allowing all thoughts and memories to flow freely throughout his mind.
“John, are you good?” said The Empath shaking him. “Come on, you can do this!” The Empath said with the biggest grin on his face. Half of the items on his list were checked off. This puzzled John but the same strange familiarity washed over him. He approached the protein and was forced to make a selection. “Reach for that chicken johnny, it’ll get you real big and strong” exclaimed The Encyclopedia. John heeded the recommendation and went with a large chicken breast.
“Exhibit A: while in a confrontation with an officer of the law, this man made a snarky remark making the officer angry. This shows he wants to get hurt”
“First of all, it was funny. Second, you’re making a mountain out of a molehill. That officer hated us anyway”
In the courtroom, John’s mind wandered again. Why is The Derelict with me where ever I go, why don't I ever leave him behind? These thoughts of why and how went through John's mind but were interrupted by The Derelict looking at him, staring for far too long. Seconds, even minutes.
“You got a staring problem, John? Come on what kind of chips are we getting?” said The Derelict. “Right right, just get the normal ones.” The derelict threw his arms in the air before saying “Oh come on, you’re so boring, here try these”. The derelict put a bag of spicy Cheetos into John’s hands “These will change your world, they’ll blow your mind, trust me.” The Derelict ripped the bag out of his hands and threw them into the cart. John hates spicy foods
As John ventured onwards he couldn't help but notice that there were more items in his cart than he remembered. He thought to himself, do I always have gaps in my memory? How do I know if a memory is complete? How do I know if a memory is…
“Real. This happened as we know it. Last but not least. Exhibit D: February 13, 1998.
John shuttered. He tried to think about what happened to him that night. It was something big but he just couldn't graspit. “Think about it hard because you are our main witness.” The Authority said. John thought to himself, although it hurt to remember, he needed to. Was it me? No, no, was it? Maybe. No! God, I-
“I can't remember!” Screamed John. “Sir, are you ok?” said a worker from the store. “Sorry, I was being a bit dramatic. I forgot what was on my list!” said John in a shaken voice. The man responded, “Ok, if you need any help finding anything, just ask me”. “That poor guy, he just walked into that, I feel so bad for him.” said The Empath. ”But hey, we’re at the end of the list! That’s cool”. John sighed.
John walked across the whole store, one foot after the other, afraid of what came next. He needed to checkout. He scanned the store up and down for anything else to do but no luck. He could only do one thing. He needed to checkout. “Let’s go back to the courtroom,” he said in desperation. “You need to pay before leaving,” said The Encyclopedia. “What are you doing, just check out man.” said The Derelict. The Authority stare burned a hole through John’s soul. The fright alone made him start walking
As he proceeded down the aisles, his vision became blurry. The halls became infinite. He started stumbling around, almost falling, but not. The counter was found eventually and he got in line. Visions of the courtroom flashed through his eyes. He kept trying to remember what had happened, and who did it.
The cashier spoke up with small talk that John did not care for. “We have NO TIME for small talk. GO!” shouted the rage. The cashier started stuffing items into bags. Their hand was moving sporadically and they stared at John the entire time. The lights in the building were all turned off except the one above them. The spotlight cast a shadow, exaggerating the cashier’s features. Their nose was lengthened, their eyes, invisible. Their cheekbones were sharp as a razor. John couldn't take his eyes off them.
“Mr. Derelict, how do you plead to the charge of. Attempted. Murder.”
John sat up straight. His pupils dilated. He finally remembered what had happened. “It was him. He tried to kill me!” thought John. He found a certain sense of relief as though his life story was complete.
“Guilty”
“Would that be cash or card sir?” said the cashier. “No that will be it for me,” said John. “what are we going to do” The Authority whispered to John, “you’re the judge here”. “I never want to talk to this man ever again,” said John. “Say no more,” The Authority said while throwing a gavel over his shoulder and replacing it with a revolver. He pulled back the hammer and pointed the barrel at The Dereict’s head. “Woah, let’s slow it down, you-” Bang! The Authority squeezed the trigger and The Derelict fell to the floor. “Jesus Christ!” screamed John. “Sir, are you ok?” the cashier asked. “No, I'm not”. John said not before looking around. Everyone was arguing and The Authority seemed very proud. John ran out of the store without grabbing his stuff and got in his car, and sped away. Leaving his ‘friends’ behind.

2023.03.31 23:16 Queasy_Sky_9837 Stress Crack on my brand new Telly windshield
I've had my new Telluride for a month now and got what seems to be a stress crack. There are no dings and the crack starts on far edge of the windshield and now stretches half way across the windshield on driver side. Grrrrr! We paid extra for full bumper to bumper but the max coverage for windshield is $2k and guess how much it costs to replace '23 Kia Telluride windshield! $2 freakin K! Guess it's staying cracked for 2 years, until inspection due. I feel like a stress crack on brand new car should be fully covered without me having to use my added paid coverage.

2023.03.31 22:48 arman737 Fender fuse Software
I have a Fender Mustang III V.2 and I had used the fender fuse software for a little while but now the Fender Fuse software is no longer available. Are there any alternatives to this software that is compatible with this amp or other options to further modify the presets or create new presets? any reasoning for the software delete besides "the takedown of thousands of Fender Fuse Mustang V2 patches and their Fender Fuse software. The takedown is because Fender is pushing their Mustang GT and Mustang GTX series of amplifiers and is, in a way, forcing people to buy something new". Really don't want to replace the amp as its not in my budget . any suggestions would help.

2023.03.31 22:00 Equivalent_Alps_8321 Safelite windshield question
Hey guys I need a new windshield for my 13 Chevy Impala LT. Small crack but it won't pass inspection I assume. On the far far left side about 3-4 inches. Safelite sealed/repaired it last summer.
Their website is saying $245 for Economy Service (doesn't include new wiper blades). $304 for Standard which includes wiper blades.
"New wiper blades are not included with Economy service. Failure to replace worn wipers may damage your new glass."
Do I really need to get new wiper blades with the new windshield?

2023.03.31 21:32 Falco-Rusticolus What would the NFL look like if teams had gone with their second choice for the team name?
Inspired by a post from awhile back asking about rebranding current NFL teams (and arguments in comments if Houston Apollos should have been the team name), I asked myself, what would the NFL look like if teams had gone with the second choice for their team name?
Below are my results, including some commentary on how the team name came to be. Feel free to disagree, or provide more info if you can, but overall this has been a pretty fun dive into NFL history.
Please Note: For teams in which I couldn't find a clear #2 option, I have listed a group of "finalists" they considered, or I went with the team's name before they changed to their current name. I also looked only at the current iteration of the franchises, meaning current ownership/team name/franchise flowing into the present team, not past professional football teams that the current franchise replaced. For example, cities like Buffalo and Boston had past professional football teams, but those organizations became defunct, and the current franchises sprouted up.
AFC NORTH
Pittsburgh Pirates - was the name before Steelers. Steelers came from a name the team contest, but I could not find any other considered options.
Baltimore Marauders - in the name the team contest, this name edged out Baltimore Americans by 15 votes for second place , though well behind the Ravens
Cleveland Panthers - Paul Brown was a popular coach for Ohio State, and many wanted to name the team after him. He refused, and they did a name the team contest in which the Panthers won. The Cleveland Panthers was the name of an old, failed football team, and Brown did not want to be associated with it, to the point that he caved and allowed the team to take on his name.
Cincinnati Tigers, Cincinnati Romans, Cincinnati Celtics, or Cincinnati Krauts - Tigers appears to have been the front-runner, which makes sense because they went with Bengals, but the others options listed were ones that the ownership group brought to the table as finalists
AFC SOUTH
Houston Stallions - I know people in previous posts loved the possibility of the Houston Apollos, but apparently Bob McNair was about to name the team the Stallions until he decided that he wanted to avoid horse imagery, as the Broncos, Colts, and to a lesser extent, the Chargers and Bills all had horse/buffalo mascots.
Tennessee Pioneers - John McClane, Houston sportswriter who covered the Houston Oilers, reported that the new name was the Pioneers, but it was leaked far before they were set to announce it, leading to Bud Adams changing the team name to the Titans.
Jacksonville Sharks or Jacksonville Stingrays - all that I could really find is that a name the team contest was held, and that these were the two other most popular options
Indianapolis Colts - Unfortunately, I could not find any evidence of any other possible options. The "Colts" name, originally the Baltimore Colts, came from a "name the team contest." They also didn't appear to consider changing the team name when they moved to Indianapolis. Interestingly however, there is a report that in the late 90's the Baltimore Franchise,, before becoming the Ravens, tried to buy the rights back for the name "Colts," offering $5mm.
AFC EAST
Miami Mariners, Marauders, Mustangs, Missiles, Moons, Sharks, or Suns - in a name the team contest, these were reported to be the top other choices
New York Dodgers, New York Borros, or New York Gothams - Reportedly these are the other choices they narrowed it down to before choosing "Jets." I did find out though that before they decided to change the name, they were known as the "Titans of New York"
Buffalo Bullets, Buffalo Nickels, or Buffalo Blue Devils - these are the reported choices that "Bills" were chosen over after a fan nickname contest
New England Minutemen or New England Bulls - in a naming contest, these were the two other finalists
AFC WEST
Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Stars, or Kansas City Mules - Lamar Hunt originally wanted to keep team name as "Kansas City Texans," but was persuaded out of it. These were the other names that he considered.
Los Angeles Chargers - There was a name the team contest, but I could not find other finalists. The "rumor" is that when ownership opened the fan-letter suggesting "Chargers" as the name entry, they liked it so much they didn't bother to open another letter.
Denver Broncos - I couldn't find other potential options, but "Broncos" was the name of a baseball team in the area and already popular, and won a name the team contest.
Oakland Señors - owner Chet Soda wanted to name the team the Oakland Mavericks, but allowed a name the team contest. In what appears to be an early historical troll job, the Señors won. Soda apparently would constantly refer to people as Señor during conversations, so many jokingly suggested that it should be the team's name. Ownership went with it, but everyone hated the name so much they changed it within two weeks to the Raiders, which was third in the name the team contest behind the Oakland Lakers
NFC NORTH
Green Bay Indians - Curly Lambeau worked for Indian Packing Company, and they originally sponsored the team, so he wanted to name it after them. Apparently due to Curly's girlfriend's suggestion, they smartly opted for Packers over Indians.
Minnesota Miners, Minnesota Chippewas, Minnesota Voyageurs, or the Twin City Skippers - These were the reported options that were being considered for the name. However, founder Max Winter was part of the ownership group for a bowling team that already had trademark rights to Minnesota Vikings and Twin City Skippers, so they decided to opt for Vikings.
Detroit Spartans - Originally this team was the Portsmouth Spartans, but new ownership renamed it the Lions to be "king of the league" and to work well with the Detroit Tigers baseball team
Chicago Cubs - baseball's Chicago Cub's helped out the football team greatly in their move to Chicago, and as thanks they wanted to name it after them. They eventually reasoned that they should have a different name, and football players are bigger than baseball players, so bears makes sense as opposed to Cubs.
NFC SOUTH
Tampa Bay Sailors, Tampa Bay Buzzards, or Tampa Bay Coastal Tides - these were the other popular choices in a name the team contest.
New Orleans Saints - I could not find other options. Reports are that ownership liked the name "Saints", and a local paper held a name the team contest, in which the Saints won as well.
Carolina Rhinos - ownership chose Panthers, and there is no real evidence of other options being considered. However, in a now defunct Panthers publication for season-ticker holders, Roar, there was a report that the Richardson's said the NFL was pushing them hard to choose Rhinos over black panthers
Atlanta Knights, Bombers, Rebels, Crackers, Confederates, Thrashers, Lancers, Firebirds, Fireballs, or Thunderbirds - these were part of a long list of finalists in a name the team contest. I obviously was curious how Atlanta Crackers was even an option, and found that there was an Atlanta Crackers baseball team that was popular in the early 1900's.
NFC EAST
Philadelphia Eagles - from what I saw, there were no other options, and ownership chose this name after the symbol of FDR's New Deal. It could be argued that I should have used Philadelphia Yellow Jackets, which was the Philadelphia franchise that the Eagles replaced/bought rights from. However, the current franchise does not claim their history and sees them as a separate Philly football team.
Dallas Rangers or Dallas Steers - Cowboys apparently was the third choice, but the Rangers got confused with the then minor league baseball team, and the GM didn't like Steers because steers get castrated
New York Football Giants - there were no other team name options that I am aware of, as they named themselves after the baseball team
Washington Admirals, Brigade, Armada, Presidents, Monuments or Redhogs - they initially included Redwolves as finalists, before sadly removing it as an option
NFC WEST
Los Angeles Rams - there were no other possible name options that I could find. The GM of the original team was a fan of the Fordham Rams and he liked that name.
San Francisco 49ers - there is no evidence that other names were in consideration, and they chose this one as a nod to history in the region
Seattle Sockeyes, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Olympics, or Seattle Evergreens - Along with the Seahawks, the franchise submitted these names to the League, and Seahawks got the most positive reactions
Arizona Normals - named after Normal Park in Chicago, it was the name the organization had before the Cardinals, back in 1900. Despite moving cities many times, there isn't any evidence that they considered changing names from the Cardinals

2023.03.31 20:25 bodobeers DRZ400 used to convert to supermoto (living the dream again)
Question is: Should I buy a used 2005 (omg so old) at 4K or a used 2016 for 5K?
The 2005 has 22k miles or so, while the 2016 has 7k miles or so.
Either way I would plan to do a bunch of stripping/replacing, just basically concerned the older one might need more motor work that I'm not that savvy or wanting to deal with.
Anyone have any advice?
Backstory: I had a DRZ400S back in 2005 (funny, I think that's the year I bought it. Or it might have been a 2003, I forget. But I liked it, and want to have one again to solve my horrible commute problems. And want it to be fun, so figured why not go back in time a bit. :-)
