2023.06.05 01:12 Hughes_Motorized OK. I'm wanting a challenge. Welding on some 16ga steel T Joints using 6013

OK. I'm quite the noob and love a challenge. I know that MIG or TIG is a lot better process but I figure if I'm going to learn stick I might as well make it interesting. I'm welding up some 16ga steel T Joints (1-1/2" x 4" coupons) using 6013 for learning/practice. I'm finding 3/32" rods set at 90 amps DCEN seems to work best so far. I'm dabbing the stick on and off fast and getting the best results so far. I tried 1/16 6013 but did not seem to do anything but burn up some rods and steel. I know with something this thin it's a balance between getting penetration or burning holes. I'm waiting on some 7018 1/16" rods for some testing.
Right now I'm just holding the flat piece in a vise and holding the upright piece with a magnet to tack, Next, I'll lay the flat piece on a steel plate and use a backer on the upright and see if I can do better. Just hoping to learn some new, useless skills here burning some rods and kill some time
Any wisdom?

I’m relatively new to the welding world. I’ve been doing it at college since September last year and I’ve been doing my apprenticeship since March this year. I’m somewhat good at welding but I don’t really know all the theory behind it but I’m wanting to get a welder for home use. I want to be able to do MIG and TIG. I’m not too bothered about MMA but I know most TIG sets are able to do it. I don’t want something really cheap and unreliable but I don’t want to spend outrageous amounts on a first set. My priorities are stainless and aluminium as those are the things I’d be doing most. Any good sets that won’t put a huge dent in the bank but are also have a good duty cycle and whatnot? Thanks in advance

I’ll start of by saying I have never been taught how to weld. I have just always had a passion for cars and naturally ended up playing around with a cheap mig welder, that being said I do think I’m improving. I have attached a repair I did recently as I would love to know some tips from those that are more experienced than myself on how I can improve and what I’m doing well / wrong. Hi y'all!
I've been working at a metal fabrication shop for almost a year now, I enjoy it a lot and can produce some pretty sexy looking flux and mig welds, but I have no idea what I'm doing with Tig welding.
My boss decided I needed to do a stainless Tig welding project, but really just set me infront of a Tig welder and said do it. I have no guidance and only know what I'm doing based on the hand movements I've seen coworkers do when they Tig weld

Dentro de la misma lo primero que nos encontramos es un catálogo con sus productos. Recién debajo de este podemos ver los auriculares con su color azul brillante junto a 3 pares de puntas de goma espuma. Por último, debajo del todo hay un estuche de simil cuero que trae dentro: un cable modular* de muy alta calidad por el precio, 3 pares de puntas de silicona de orificio amplio y 3 pares de orificio estrecho junto con un poco de papeles como el manual y la certificación del producto

Si estos auriculares los viese por primera vez sin saber el precio, diría que tranquilamente pueden valer más de $200 USD. El housing está diseñado en una aleación de aluminio que se siente muy sólida al tacto y que posee orificios bien escondidos que alivian la presión que se puede generar en el canal auditivo. El driver que poseen los S12 PRO es un driver de tipo magnético planar de 14.8mm.

Resumen simplificado del funcionamiento: Este tipo de drivers funciona mediante una fina lámina metálica con un arreglo de “alambres” embebido en esta. A cada lado de esta se encuentran imanes con polaridades opuestas. Al conectar los auriculares, la corriente que pasará a través de los alambres genera un campo magnético que reacciona con los campos permanentes de ambos imanes creando así un movimiento ondulante en el diafragma que produce los sonidos.
El cable modular incluido es de muy buena calidad. Construido en cobre monocristalino chapado en plata y de cuatro núcleos de 98 hilos cada uno. Su tipo de conexión es de 2 pines de 0.78mm con terminaciones intercambiables entre 2.5, 3.5 y 4.4mm. Un par de críticas que tengo en este apartado es que el cable es más pesado que el promedio (por bastante a mi parecer) y puede resultar incómodo durante largas sesiones. También, las guías plásticas del cable que van sobre las orejas son incómodas y hubiese preferido que no las hubiesen incluido.

La cantidad de puntas de silicona y de goma espuma es algo muy positivo (9 pares en total!). Utilicé la mayor parte del tiempo mis preferidas que son las de orificio ancho pero las puntas de goma espuma se sienten de buena calidad para quien necesite la aislación.

El confort de los auriculares se me hizo tan solo correcto: como mencioné antes, las guías plásticas no son de mi preferencia y el cable pesado no ayuda mucho. Sin embargo, cuando logran colocarse de manera correcta en el oído externo, sellan de manera decente (no es el mejor sello pero aísla lo suficiente) y tuve que reacomodarlos pocas veces. Algo a tener en cuenta es que protruyen un poco por lo que no los recomendaría para usar acostado.
Un pequeño apartado que voy a agregar en este caso es la capacidad de amplificación que requieren los S12 PRO. Es sabido que los drivers magnético planares pueden ser difíciles de amplificar y esto no es así con este set de LETSHUOER. Al usarlos con mi celular (directamente con la entrada Jack 3.5mm) me bastó con subir el volumen al 50% para llegar a un nivel confortable a la hora de escuchar música.

Graves
A pesar de lo que dicen las mediciones, me encontré con unos subgraves y graves neutrales y de referencia. Tienen buena definición, pero carecen de impacto para usuarios basshead.
En canciones como “Paris” de MOON (soundtrack de Hotline Miami), los subgraves tienen buena presencia sintiéndolos “dentro nuestro” durante toda la canción ya que son la estrella de esta. Lo mismo sucede en “Xanny” de Billie Eilish, durante el estribillo esos subgraves pueden sentirse “hasta los huesos”.
Por otro lado, en “Back Around” de Tiesto sentí lo que mencioné: el impacto de los graves durante el drop me deja deseando 1-2dB más para canciones de EDM. No obstante, este tuning de referencia es particularmente bueno para otros géneros como veremos a continuación

Medios
Al ser una persona que escucha varios artistas de Heavy Metal/Rock y diferentes orquestas, considero que los instrumentos de cuerda son un ámbito que conozco bien. En el caso de “Meet Your Maker” de In Flames, las guitarras eléctricas tienen una buena sensación de textura en cada nota y evitan ser punzantes para el oído.
Cambiando de género, en “Yellow” del concierto de Coldplay en Buenos Aires 2017, del minuto 2 a 2:56 la guitarra eléctrica acompaña la canción de manera muy tranquila para luego reaparecer, y segundos después, donde tanto los instrumentos como la voz del cantante principal suenan al unísono se crea una caótica armonía donde se pueden diferenciar con claridad a cada uno de los sonidos. La voz de Chris Martin tiene un timbre natural a mis oídos y tanto voces femeninas como masculinas tienen buen peso en la región.
Por último, en "Nessun dorma!" interpretada por Pavarotti, la voz del italiano es de otro mundo. Hay una concordancia particularmente buena entre él y la orquesta (coristas, violines, trompas, trompetas, piano, etc).

Agudos
Otra vez, el gráfico muestra unos picos bastante acentuados en la región 2.5 y 8 kHz y, sin embargo, la canción anterior de In Flames que tiene “splashes” continuos de los platillos de batería no me resultaron punzantes para nada.
Es más, en música clásica como “El Lago de los Cisnes” de Tchaikovsky interpretada por la Orquestra Sinfónica de Boston y “Divertimento en F Major, K. 138” de Mozart interpretada por Quatuor Van Kuijk, noté que no son unos IEMs super analíticos ni brillantes. De hecho, para aquellas personas que busquen encontrar cada mínimo detalle en su música se va a quedar deseando un poco más en los S12 PRO.

Soundstage e imagen
En la canción de Coldplay “Yellow” descripta anteriormente, pude notar la sensación de distancia entre el público y la banda. De todas maneras, a mis oídos el soundstage es más ancho que alto y profundo. Buena distinción de distancia entre los lados pero no tanto hacia adelante y atrás.
Pero acá si viene lo bueno, la capacidad de la imagen es espectacular. En “Waiting for Love” de Avicii el driver magnético planar logra separar el comienzo de esta canción en tres capas. Si tuviese que describirlas de “arriba hacia abajo” lo que escucho es: primero Avicii cantando por sobre todo, en el medio el sonido de las teclas de piano que lleva el ritmo, y luego por debajo o atrás la batería con sus bombos y platillos acompañado el mismo. Ambos instrumentos y la voz desaparecen en la creación del climax hacia el drop y son reemplazados por sonidos sintéticos. Cuando cae el drop, estos instrumentos reaparecen en las mismas “capas”. La batería solo ejecuta sus platillos y la base la lleva un sintetizador que se incorpora en este momento.
Esta descripción es de lo que son capaces este tipo de drivers, una imagen precisa que permite al oyente diferenciar con claridad que instrumentos están siendo reproducidos y separar sin esfuerzo alguno a unos de los otros.

Conclusión

Lamentablemente, no puedo hablar sobre la mejora que hizo LETSHUOER en este IEM con respecto al primer S12 ya que no tuve la suerte de probar este modelo. Fuera de esto, en mi experiencia, viendo y comparando las presentaciones del S12 y S12 PRO se nota que no fue un simple cambio de tuning. Agregar un cable modular de una calidad incluso mejor al de su predecesor (128 hilos vs 392 hilos), y continuar con la misma solidez en su construcción hace que esos $15 USD extra valgan la pena. En el apartado de sonido tuve ciertas críticas, pero son más los puntos positivos que puedo sacar a relucir de estos IEMs y debo decir que son una gran forma de introducirse al mundo de los auriculares magnético planares.

Si tuviese que describirlas de “arriba hacia abajo” lo que escucho es: primero Avicii cantando por sobre todo, en el medio el sonido de las teclas de piano que lleva el ritmo, y luego por debajo o atrás la batería con sus bombos y platillos acompañado el mismo. Ambos instrumentos y la voz desaparecen en la creación del climax hacia el drop y son reemplazados por sonidos sintéticos. Cuando cae el drop, estos instrumentos reaparecen en las mismas “capas”. La batería solo ejecuta sus platillos y la base la lleva un sintetizador que se incorpora en este momento.
Esta descripción es de lo que son capaces este tipo de drivers, una imagen precisa que permite al oyente diferenciar con claridad que instrumentos están siendo reproducidos y separar sin esfuerzo alguno a unos de los otros.

Lamentablemente, no puedo hablar sobre la mejora que hizo LETSHUOER en este IEM con respecto al primer S12 ya que no tuve la suerte de probar este modelo. Fuera de esto, en mi experiencia, viendo y comparando las presentaciones del S12 y S12 PRO se nota que no fue un simple cambio de tuning. Agregar un cable modular de una calidad incluso mejor al de su predecesor (128 hilos vs 392 hilos), y continuar con la misma solidez en su construcción hace que esos $15 USD extra valgan la pena. En el apartado de sonido tuve ciertas críticas, pero son más los puntos positivos que puedo sacar a relucir de estos IEMs y debo decir que son una gran forma de introducirse al mundo de los auriculares magnético planares.

The current market for "budget" IEMs (under $200 USD) is saturated with single dynamic driver earphones, where some models don't present significant differences from others. However, the implementation of affordable IEMs with planar magnetic drivers has been on the rise lately. Today, I will analyze the LETSHUOER S12 PRO, a pair of planar magnetic earphones with a modular cable and exceptional construction, available for $135 USD.

Unboxing, Build & Comfort

The box is of considerable size and weight, but once opened, it is understood why its dimensions are that large. Inside, the first thing we find is a catalog of their products. Just below that, we can see the bright blue IEMs, along with 3 pairs of foam tips. Finally, at the bottom, there is a faux leather case that contains a modular* cable of very high quality for the price, 3 pairs of wide-bore silicone tips, 3 pairs of narrow-bore tips, and some paperwork such as the manual and product certification.

If I were to see these earphones for the first time without knowing the price, I would easily say they could be worth more than $200 USD. The housing is designed with an aluminum alloy which feels very solid to the touch and has well-hidden vents that relieve pressure build up in the ear canal. The driver used in the S12 PRO is a 14.8mm single sided planar magnetic driver.

Summary of how the driver works: This type of driver works through a thin metal diaphragm with an array of embedded "wires." On each side of the diaphragm are magnets with opposite polarities. When connected, the current passing through the wires generates a magnetic field that interacts with the permanent magnetic fields of both magnets, creating undulating movement in the diaphragm thus producing sound.
The included modular cable is of very good quality. It is built with silver-plated monocrystalline copper and has 4 cores, each consisting of 98 strands. Its connector type is 0.78mm 2-pin with interchangeable terminations for 2.5, 3.5, and 4.4mm. One criticism I have in this regard is that the cable is heavier than average (by quite a bit, in my opinion), and it can be uncomfortable during long sessions. Also, the plastic cable earguides that go over the ears are uncomfortable, and I would have preferred if they were not included.

The number of silicone and foam tips is a very positive aspect (9 pairs in total!). I mostly used my favorite ones, which are the wide-bore tips, but the foam tips feel of good quality for those who need isolation.

The comfort of the S12 PRO was just okay for me: as I mentioned before, the plastic guides are not of my preference and the heavy cable doesn't help that much either. However, when they are properly positioned in the outer ear, they seal decently (it's not the best seal, but it provides enough isolation), and I had to readjust them only a few times. It's worth noting that they protrude a bit, so I wouldn't recommend using them while lying down.
One small aspect I'm going to add in this case is the driving power needed for the S12 PRO. It's known that planar magnetic drivers can be difficult to amplify, but that's not the case with this LETSHUOER set. When I used them with my smartphone (directly into 3.5mm input), I only needed to increase the volume up to 50% to reach a comfortable level when listening to music.

Bass
Despite what the measurements indicate, I found the a sub-bass and bass near neutral. The bass have good definition but lack impact for basshead users.
In songs like "Paris" by MOON (Hotline Miami soundtrack), the sub-bass has a strong presence, and you can feel it “deep within you” throughout the entire song as it takes the spotlight. The same happens in "Xanny" by Billie Eilish, where during the chorus, those sub-bass frequencies can be felt “down to the bones”.
On the other hand, in "Back Around" by Tiesto, I experienced what I mentioned earlier: the impact of the bass during the drop leaves me wanting 1-2dB more for EDM songs. However, this reference tuning is particularly good for other genres as we'll see next.

Mids
As someone who listens to various Heavy Metal/Rock artists and different orchestras, I consider myself familiar with the sound of string instruments. In the case of "Meet Your Maker" by In Flames, the electric guitars have a good sense of texture in each note and avoid being piercing to the ear.
Switching genres, in "Yellow" from Coldplay's concert in Buenos Aires 2017, from minute 2 to 2:56, the electric guitar accompanies the song very gently, only to reappear seconds later. In this chaotic harmony, where instruments and the lead singer's voice come together, you can clearly distinguish each individual sound. Chris Martin's voice has a natural timbre to my ears, and both female and male voices have good weight in the region.
Lastly, in "Nessun dorma!" performed by Pavarotti, the Italian's voice is out of this world. There is particularly good articulation between him and the orchestra (choristers, violins, horns, trumpets, piano, etc.).

Treble
Again, the graph shows quite pronounced peaks in the 2.5 kHz and 8 kHz regions, yet the previous song by In Flames with continuous cymbal splashes did not come across as piercing at all.
Furthermore, in classical music such as Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake" performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Mozart's "Divertimento in F Major, K. 138" performed by the Quatuor Van Kuijk, I noticed that these IEMs are not super analytical or bright. In fact, for those seeking to gather every tiny detail in their music, they may find themselves wanting a bit more from the S12 PRO.

Soundstage & Imaging
In the previously described Coldplay song "Yellow," I could perceive a sense of distance between the audience and the band. However, to my ears, the soundstage is wider than it is tall and deep. There is good distinction of distance between the sides, but not as much towards the front and back.
But here's where it gets exciting: the imaging capability is spectacular. In Avicii's "Waiting for Love," the single-sided planar magnetic driver manages to separate the different layers of the song's introduction. If I were to describe them from "top to bottom" what I hear is: first, Avicii's vocals above everything else, in the middle the rhythmic sound of the piano keys, and then below or in the background, the drums with their kicks and cymbals accompanying the song. Both instruments and vocals disappear during the build-up to the drop and are replaced by synthetic sounds. When the drop hits, these instruments reappear in the same "layers". The drums only play their cymbals while the song’s bass is carried by a synthesizer that is introduced at this moment.
This description showcases the capabilities of this type of driver, providing a precise image that allows the listener to clearly differentiate which instruments are being reproduced and effortlessly separate them from one another.

Unfortunately, I cannot speak about the improvements LETSHUOER made to this IEM compared to the first S12 as I did not have the opportunity to try that model. However, based on my experience and comparing the presentations of the S12 and S12 PRO, it is evident that it was not a simple change of tuning. Adding a modular cable of even better quality than its predecessor (128 strands vs. 392 strands) and maintaining the same solid construction makes those extra $15 USD worth it. In terms of sound and some cable aspects, I had my few criticisms but there are more positive characteristics that I can highlight about these IEMs, and I must say they are a great way to enter the world of planar magnetic IEMs.

Hi all, I'm a hobbyist welder that has taken 4 part time night courses in welding. I'm pretty proficient at MIG and started learning TIG on steel prior to needing to stop courses temporarily. I initially wanted to tig aluminum and stainless, but it's just not worth the effort to learn. It's so much more difficult!
This summer I'm looking to make a custom computer desk and coffee table out of steel pipes, a steel shade tent, and metal art.
I own a Lincoln square wave tig I spent too much on in excitement (and expecting I'd learn aluminum welding easily). I'm curious if I'm better off selling it as lightly used and picking up a cheap MIG machine.
The biggest struggle I have with steel TIG fabrication is rigging (i know, even MIG I should be doing this), and not being able to use my off hand for metal art.
What do you think? Am I better of getting some money back after Selling the TIG and buying a MIG? Or should I really be focusing on TIG skills for the kind of welding I'm looking to do?

I have a miller MIG welder with argon that I weld steel with as I need to for various projects. Can I just toss in an aluminum spool of the same size 0.030 as the steel and start welding?
I've been welding steel since high school but have very little practice on aluminum so I figured the easiest way to get this small project done would be as like this. Obviously I'd run several practice beads before my actual project to get the feel for it.
Basically is there anything I need to do to MIG aluminum or is it just as easy as swapping a spool and finding the right power and speed?

Do they make adapters for this style plug?
So i have a Everlast 185 amp PowerTIG 185DV AC/DC TIG Stick Welder that has a three prong power cord. I'm looking for an adapter to make it a four prong so i can run it off of a generator that i have. I've gone to multiple place around my area trying to find an adapter but with no success. I've check the internet as well and only get 110 adapters. Does anyone know if they make an adapter like this?

welding help me sanity check my prep and TIG setup for this base plate
I am still a welding noob and plan on welding a 10mm (0.4in) thick base plate to an 80 by 80 mm box section that is 5mm (0.2 in) with thick. It will be the main column for a small work top mill.
In the pic I also have a practice section of the same box tube and a 8mm (0.3 in) plate. All parts I cleaned up with a flap disk that struggled with the coating(I guess cold rolled steel) and then with some sand paper by hand as the box section was a little concave.
TIG setup would be 1/16in grey tungsten, Nr 6 standard cup and a 3.1mm (1/8 in) rod. Pure argon at 10 liters per minute.
I still struggle with inside corner welds, from what I learned so far I should focus my arc on the thickecolder piece. I plan on taking it slow and steady and doing 1 inch long welds alternating around the part to keep warping down.
  1. What amperage would you use for tacking and the welding?
  2. Am I missing anything?
  3. Would you change anything from the above set up?
Note I don’t have thicker tungsten and my TIG welder maxes out at 200 amps.

Hello fellow welders. I just started at a new place as a welder. 🙏🏿 The work requires travel within the country (U.S) and a lot of responsibility I didn't consider before the salary conversation with the hiring manager.
As a result, I'm pretty sure I lowballed myself by asking for a low starting wage. The hiring manager's haste to offer me what I asked for was a sign - I don't have much experience in negotiating pay. 😅 With 6 years of work experience as a welder doing stick, flux core, mig, and on course to learn tig, how do I go about renegotiating pay? Also for context, this is a big company, which I'm sure matters in this situation.
I have some ideas on how to go about this, though curious what other welders think. The company is based in MA/RI, U.S.A.
