 I’ll try to keep this explanation pretty short, but basically I (18F) caught feelings for my coworker (17M), and although I’m pretty sure he felt the same way, I never knew it for a fact. We went out once, but it was never actually defined as a “date.” We didn’t end up going out again after that, because he had some personal complications that kept him out of work for a few months. Although we texted briefly during that time, it was clear that he wanted space, so it didn’t happen very often. Anyway, he eventually came back to work and things sort of went back to normal, but there was an awkwardness between us that just didn’t exist before. I wanted to address that awkwardness and figure out where we stood, but the rest of his life still seemed extremely complicated and I didn’t want to pile on. As time went on, he grew more and more distant, and one day he just stopped talking to me (and pretty much everyone else at work) entirely. I don’t want to reveal too many details because it’s entirely possible that he might find this, but we had a conversation that day which basically ended in him saying that we were just coworkers and that I shouldn’t worry about him or try to get involved in his personal life. This upset me, because at the very least, I thought he saw us as friends. I was embarrassed that I cared so much for so long about someone who claimed to want nothing to do with me, so I left work early and avoided him the next time we worked together. He ended up leaving two hours into his shift that day. In the next few days, he quit his job, removed me on Snapchat, and blocked me on Instagram. I was hurt, but more than that, I was embarrassed that I had misjudged our relationship so immensely. I tried to distract myself from the way I was feeling with extracurriculars, classes, college decisions, and the other typical senior year stuff. It worked a little, but not for long. Now I’m out of school, my friends are all either working or out of town, and I spend most of my time at work. I’m going to college halfway across the country in a few months, where I’m hoping I can forget he ever existed, but it still seems so far away. I have no distractions left, and I can’t get him out of my head. It doesn’t help that he still views my Instagram stories on his second account sometimes, which leads me to wonder if he still thinks about me too. (I know that it seems like I have no basis to believe that he ever thought about me in the first place, but I don’t want to include the details that could prove otherwise, since like I said before, I wouldn’t be surprised if he found this.) Wow, this post is getting a lot longer than I anticipated. Anyway, I don’t know why this situation affects me so much. I haven’t had that much experience with relationships, which probably doesn’t help. This is the closest I’ve ever been, and I’ve never felt so strongly about another person. How do I get over it?
