just an idea that popped into my head as I drove today
Michael was slowly stretching his neck when a flash of brown-tan caught his eye. He froze, laying on his blanket under a bush, as the animal moved into sight.
Whitetail buck, medium size. Counting…6 points. Not bad.
Most importantly, a decent amount of weight. Perfect—his freezer was empty.
Michael slowly scooted on his blanket, moving himself up to his rifle. It was an old rifle, made back on Earth in a nation that no longer exists, chambered in a round that Michael had to re-design in the home auto-fab himself.
A Sako Hunter 85 chambered in .270 Winchester. The blued barrel and wood stock were scratched and dinged on the outside, but the combined old-fashioned meticulous maintenance and somewhat-modern stasis storage meant it was just as smooth and pretty much just as accurate as it was when his forbearers first shot it hundreds of years ago.
The auto-fab made the bullet and casing but didn’t put them together. Michael, like his father before him, hand-inspected and measured the components, weighed out the powder, and assembled the rounds himself. A tradition passed down from his father, and his father before him, and his father before him, and so on and so forth.
Modern arms existed, were far easier to use, and just as deadly to the planet’s wildlife.
But the taking of a wild animal’s life called for a certain tradition and respect, Michael felt. Either that, or it was just fun to be a different kind of hunter from his neighbors.
As Michael lined up the shot, he looked at the markers he’d put out for himself. About 200 yards. Michael closed his eyes, bringing up the mental image of his ballistic chart. Needed to aim 2 inches high. Boiler room shot, quick, efficient, room for error.
He settled the ancient scope’s crosshairs on his aim point. His finger tightened on the trigger, but the scope bounced. Heartrate was too high.
Slow breath in. Pause. Slow breath out. Pause.
In, pause, out, pause.
The scope settled.
There.
The ancient trigger broke at a clean 2.25 lbs.
Xin Trath watched from orbital observation as the human shot a quadruped. He’d been observing PONT—he didn’t know what that meant, but it was what human documents called the world—for two full cycles around its star.
The planet was decently populated, with around 5 billion sapient inhabitants, almost entirely humans. It wasn’t rich in any particularly rare resources, but it had an abundance of space, life, and basic materials—all sorely needed by the stagnating Xrinix Empire. It was also, at least nominally, independent of the rest of the Human Consortium, and thus not protected by their fleets. Its limited orbital defenses would prove no match to Xrinix fleets. It was, to borrow a metaphor from the humans, low hanging fruit.
Not the prettiest fruit by any means, but not ugly either, and incredibly easy to reach.
A perfect, easy conquest to herald in a new age of expansion for his holy majesty.
Xin had been sent to observe and gather information in advance of the invasion forces. PONT’s military was small, its police forces were of average size. No problem for the full weight of the 1st Glorious Fleet. The only thing that truly concerned Xin was an incredibly high rate—well over 75%—of civilian weapon ownership.
However, as Xin watched the unarmored quadruped bleed out in a short 23 seconds, he figured that the human’s ancient weapons, no matter how numerous, wouldn’t be that much of an issue. The rate of civilian firearm ownership became footnote IIIc on page 43-B of his final report.
Michael lay on a hill overlooking a Xrinix orbital-continental hub. The aliens had come screaming in two weeks ago and swept aside the orbital defenses. The military had put up a good fight, but outnumbered and outgunned, all they could do was buy time for civilians to evacuate the cities and flee to the countryside.
But this was home.
Laying on the hill, Michael ranged in with his monocular. 457 yards. Minimal wind. The weird looking aliens—imagine a biped lizard with fur—were milling about, relaxed and unalert. Selecting his aimpoint, Michael steadied his breath.
In, pause, out, pause.
The ancient rifle barked.
It was time to hit back.
The humans had hit back—hard. Attacked from all sides, the invasion forces initially crumbled. Just as they were getting their feet back under them, the Xrinix were pushed off of the captured human weapons depots.
Suddenly, the humans didn’t have anemic, ancient weapons anymore. Now, they had modern weapons and armor. Their military must have had millions of extra firearms laying around. Perhaps that footnote should have been a chapter.
Michael had used way too much paracord. It was time to assault the last of the alien outposts, and despite having a modern sidearm, something felt right about cracking out an old family heirloom. So, he spent a few hours and way too much paracord to rig up the holster.
A few hours later, when he led the rebel strike team into the military governor’s chamber, the old general’s guard put up a fight.
It was bloody, but they were pushed aside.
Finally, Michael stood before the alien’s desk.
“How did you manage this?”
Michael drew his sidearm. “Y’all motherfuckers picked the wrong planet, asshole.”
“What do you mean?” the alien’s translator indicated intense confusion.
Michael’s thumb pulled the hammer back. “Didn’t you know? PONT stands for ‘Planet of New Texas.’”
“Shit.”
The ancient revolver thundered.
The alien threat was no more.

A tearful reunion
You can't miss Amos Parker. He is well over six feet tall. Some say closer to seven. Many say he was the tallest soldier in the American army during the Revolutionary War.
This week, the now 63-year-old Parker enters Shepard's Hotel on Bagg's Square in Utica (really the Bagg's Hotel, but the name was changed while Abraham Shepard owned it from 1825 to 1828). Parker is determined to meet the hotel's distinguished guest, the Marquis de Lafayette.
In 1777, while the Revolutionary War was raging, the then 19-year-old, tall, red-haired Lafayette left his home in France and joined the American army in its fight to win for the American colonies their independence from Great Britain. He fought in many battles and, in 1781, commanded troops in Yorktown, Virginia, when British Gen. Charles Cornwallis surrendered his army to Gen. George Washington, just about ensuring an end to the war and an American victory.
On the night of January 30, 1948, Utica firefighters fought one of the most spectacular fires in the city’s history. Flames roared through “The Long Block” on the west side of Lower Genesee Street, between Oriskany and Whitesboro streets. The 3-alarm blaze was fought in temperatures 30 below zero. Seventeen firefighters were injured and 11 businesses damaged. Losses were estimated at $400,000.
Now, 44 years later, the 68-year-old Lafayette is back in America, touring the country as a guest of its grateful citizens. This week, after visits in Rome, Oriskany and Whitesboro, he enters Utica triumphantly via the Rome Road (today Lafayette Street). After a big celebration, he is in his hotel room, resting before continuing his journey east.
Suddenly, there is a knock on the door and in walks the very tall Amos Parker. At first, Lafayette is puzzled, but then Parker begins to relate an incident that occurred at the Battle of Yorktown.
As the fighting there raged, Lafayette ordered 25 of his men — including Parker — to remove a fence so that Lafayette could lead his soldiers through the breach. "Once you remove the fence," Lafayette shouted, "allow me and my men to ride through the opening. Do not fire your weapons!"

More:Later known for illustrations, Saturday Globe began without: Mohawk Valley history
The fence was removed and Lafayette and his men began to ride through. Suddenly, Parker spotted a British sniper aiming his rifle at Lafayette. Before the sniper could fire, though, Parker raised his musket and shot him.
Unbelievingly, an aide to Lafayette had Parker court-martialed for disobeying Lafayette's "don't fire your weapon" order. He, of course, was acquitted when it was learned that by disobeying the order, he had saved Lafayette's life.
Now, in a hotel room 44 years later, Parker and Lafayette relive the incident. They embrace and (a historian later wrote) enjoy "a heart-tugging event and weep" in each other's arms. (After the war, Parker settled in the town of Augusta in southwestern Oneida County and died there in 1842 at age 80. He was buried at the Parker (Augusta) Cemetery at the intersection of Augusta-Solsville Road and Anderson Road. A blue and yellow state marker there reads: AMOS PARKER, TALLEST MAN IN AMERICAN ARMY. SAVED GEN. LAFAYETTE'S LIFE. PRESENT AT THE SURRENDER OF CORNWALLIS. BURIED HERE.

Pro hockey returns
Utica, after many years without a professional hockey team, has one again. The Utica Comets are in the American Hockey League, a minor league affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League. They will play in the Utica Memorial Auditorium. Robert Esche, a former goalie in the National Hockey League and president of the Mohawk Valley Garden, will operate the team. Mayor Robert Palmieri says the move fits in with his vision for a revitalized Bagg's Square and Harbor Point development. "What a great day for the city!" he says. "The emotion is overwhelming."
The Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame inducts Stan "Buddy" Evans, longtime baseball coach at Rome Free Academy and college football official; Bill Holowaty, originally from Mohawk, longtime baseball coach at Eastern Connecticut State University; Ed Wadas, a "super" supporter of local athletics and called the "candy man" for giving out candy at local games, especially in Whitesboro, Oriskany and New York Mills; and Tom Wells, multi-sport coach at New Hartford schools, especially known for his highly successful swim teams.
Bobbi Jo Kahl is approved by the town board in Remsen as as the town justice.
In American Legion baseball, Roberts Post defeats Whitestown, 3 to 1. Nate Palmer, a senior at Holland Patent High, strikes out 18 and gets the win. He is supported by the hitting of Kinsey Williams, Nico Ramos and Austin Mann. Whitestown's Jared Muraca pitches well, allowing only five hits.

2023.06.08 19:47 _METALEX In 1972, 14 years before the Chernobyl accident, an underground nuclear explosion was staged in the densely populated Kharkiv region of Ukraine.
Posting it here since nobody either interested in this info (
history) or don't allow it in their sub rules.
51 years ago, an underground nuclear explosion was planned in the densely populated Kharkiv region to extinguish a burning gas borehole.
Today, only a few people know that in 1972, a nuclear explosion was arranged near Kharkov. Its explosive power was only three times less than that of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. Fortunately, none of the people then died. And Soviet scientists used a nuclear charge to put out a huge "torch" of gas. The attempt ended in failure. The fiery gas geyser burned for another year, and the radioactive cloud spread over half of Ukraine. All this was swept under the rug and kept a strict secret. In order to lift the veil over this mystery, we went to the village of Pervomaiskoye, Krasnograd district, Kharkov region, a kilometer away from where, back in 1972, a nuclear explosion occurred.
ACCIDENT
In 1970, geologists found the largest gas field in these places. According to early estimates alone, its reserves were 300 billion cubic meters of gas. A year later, there were already 17 boreholes. And suddenly an emergency happened - on one of the drilling rigs, at a depth of 20 meters, gas condensate caught fire. In a moment, the column of fire was already rising several tens of meters. The torch hummed louder than a jet plane or space rocket during launch. The gas spread throughout the neighborhood and began to poison the inhabitants of nearby villages. "We were forbidden to use matches, turn on the light, or turn on all electrical appliances. They said there was a gas accident. And if we light a match, everything will explode. My family and I were very scared, we cried. And something was making a terrible, loud noise. It’s impossible to describe," recalls a resident of the village of Pervomaiskoye, Ekaterina Yatsenko. According to her, on the outskirts of the village at night, it was as bright as during the day.
SOLUTION
They tried to put out the burning fountain with everything that science was then capable of. For example, they threw multi-ton concrete slabs from cranes, but they were blown away like fluff hundreds of meters away. "They tried to inject concrete there under high pressure. But it didn’t help either," recalls Leonid Chernogor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of Kharkov National University, a native of those places. Finally, Moscow decided to use an underground nuclear charge to create a local earthquake. The explosion was supposed to move the soil and create an artificial seal that would close the gas flow. Back in 1963, at the Urta-Bulak gas field in Uzbekistan, in exactly the same way, exactly the same burning fountain was put out. But… that accident happened in the desert, the area was uninhabited for hundreds of kilometers. And here is the densely populated Kharkiv region. Near the city of Krasnograd, with a population of about 50,000 inhabitants.
By all calculations, the probability of failure was only 1%
This was to be the 28th nuclear explosion for peaceful purposes in the Soviet Union and the first in Ukraine. Not a drop of radiation should have escaped to the surface - Soviet scientists did everything for the safety of the population. All radiation, according to their calculations, was supposed to remain underground.
"There was no other way to put it out and inflict less damage to the state. The likelihood that this torch would extinguish is 99%. The probability that it could not have been possible is only 1%. Was it worth the risk? Definitely, "says Leonid Cherogor, who was an eyewitness to these events. "I remember when the torch was burning, it was very beautiful and scary at the same time. Such an unprecedented, natural rocket. My parents lived 12 kilometers from the well. I saw and heard it all, "the scientist recalls. According to him, the gas torch produced acoustic fluctuations, in particular an inaudible infrasound for a person, which affects the nervous system and human psyche. "Some become aggressive, others lose their minds. And most importantly - the infrasound from this fire spread hundreds and thousands of kilometers without weakening! This is one of the astonishing factors of this fire," says Leonid Cherogor, who immediately adds that no one studied this problem seriously, and if any studies were conducted, then everything was "completely secret."
The second time a nuclear charge was used for peaceful purposes in Ukraine was in 1979. On September 16, in the city of Yenakiyevo, Donetsk region, at the mine "Yuniy Communar," the secret operation "Clivazh" was successfully implemented. Rocks were shaken with a nuclear charge so that methane came out of the mines, which often exploded and led to the deaths of people. The second explosion was successful.
Explosion: "The authorities began to flee in their cars"
A nuclear charge was delivered from Moscow to the village of Pervomaiskskoye. The highest leadership of the Soviet Union arrived. The fiery torch was encircled: the first row was police officers - they were on duty only a kilometer away from the accident, the second was the military. And the third were the KGB officers. "We stood in an encinrclement one row every 20 meters. We were not given weapons, but they told us to stand to death and not let anyone approach," recalls the local resident Nikolai Taran, who worked in those years as a policeman. " Near the torch was the T-34 tank, but instead of a gun, it has a huge fan, with which the gas stream was directed in the right direction. Two helicopters were parked nearby: a white Mi-8 and a green Mi-2. There were still many black cars called "Volga". Rumors had already spread that they would use a nuclear charge. We knew nothing more," he adds. The inhabitants of Pervomaisky—about 450 people—were evacuated five kilometers into the neighboring village of Krestische. " They were taken out in an organized manner by buses, and buses were evacuating up to five families each. We went by car ourselves," says Nadezhda Diabur, chairman of the village council of Krest, who was then only 15 years old. People only took documents with them. "All pets were left at home. Only food cans were brought to the gardens so that the glass would not break. We were told that they would extinguish the explosion, and we did not know anything else," recalls the paramedic of the village of Natalya Taran. The locals remember that day perfectly. "It was Sunday. It was warm and good on the street after the rain. A sunny day. A light breeze blew. Just your good summer day. I remember when they left Pervomaisky village, the soldiers cleaned the territory- they checked every house for people," says Nadezhda Diabur.
At 10 a.m. on July 9, 1972, the charge was detonated. "The authorities ordered us to stand on tiptoes so that our spines would not break from the shockwave. I felt an underground impetus, and then an unnatural silence came, as if suddenly I became deaf. I don’t know how long it lasted—a minute or two—but suddenly an explosion sounded: stones, dirt, and water flew up. A heavy brown-black, mushroom-like figure was formed. Leadership immediately fled away on their helicopters and cars," recalls Nikolai Taran.
The torch went out.. for a while, and everyone applauded. But then a fiery geyser appeared again. According to Leonid Chernogora, a radioactive trace stretched through the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. "Of course, the first secretaries in Kyiv sniffed about this, and they have already begun to import food from Moscow instead of the Kiev regions. They fed the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine with food that was imported from uninfected regions. "The top officials were very frightened, but they did not know the numbers and facts," says Leonid Chernogor. According to the scientist, the products of this nuclear explosion would break up in a maximum of two months. " In Ukraine, radiation was more or less distributed, and its level was relatively low," says Leonid Chernogor. " It’s also impossible to tell what exactly killed locals (either after months or ten years later)."
Pervomaiskoye: returned, as if after the war
Residents of the tiny Pervomaiskoye village, which was only a kilometer from the epicenter of the explosion, naturally weren't told that their territory was infected. They learned the truth only after the collapse of the USSR. The only bad sign was the sudden death of all bees within a radius of several kilometers. But five hours later, the locals had already calmly dined at home and drank water from the wells. Because of the explosion, the doors and windows in some houses were scattered, and the walls cracked. " This is a normal phenomenon - the consequences of the shock wave, albeit an underground explosion. All the specialists foresaw this, "explains Leonid Chernogor. The old buildings even completely collapsed. " The barn collapsed, one of the walls in it disappeared. It was scary to enter. I had a feeling as if the war had broken out," recalls Ekaterina Yatsenko, a resident of the village of Pervomaisky, with tears in her eyes. There were some devastations in every house. In our barn, the roof collapsed and the walls cracked. And those who lived closer to the explosion were shaken up by the shockwave," says the chairman of the village council, Nadezhda Diabur. Building materials were brought only to those whose homes had serious damage, the inhabitants of Pervomaisky said.
"My dad wanted to go home immediately after the explosion because the farm was abandoned. We went in a roundabout way - but were not allowed into the village, which was encircled before the explosion. After 2 p.m. in the afternoon, they brought us back by buses. Only after 30 years did we learn that it was a nuclear explosion. But there were rumors before, too. On the radio, someone heard, according to the American station, that it was a nuclear explosion. At that time, nobody paid much attention to this," continues Nadezhda Diabur. According to the former paramedic of the village of Natalia Taran, a quarter of the population will die from cancer in the next 30 years. " Now about 250 people live in Pervomaisky. These are mostly old people. The rural school was closed when we were still under the Soviet regime," says the paramedic.
People recall the first months after the explosion with a shudder. When a gas torch still burned. The height of the flame reached 150 meters. "White nights came to our village. My friends then lived on the outskirts. When I came to visit them, we could not hear each other even from one meter away. I had to scream," recalls local resident Lidia Pisareva. Someone abandoned their homes a few days after the gas fountain was set on fire, and someone did not want to leave even after months. People recall that chickens did not want to carry eggs in the evening because it was so bright, like it was daytime. The cows did not want to give milk because it was very loud. "People could not live in their homes for a prolonged time - they would go mad. They could not fall asleep for the first few weeks - it was like a nightmare. I once came to visit them in the evening. It was very bright in the room, and an unusual look opened from the window - a burning fountain in the sky. I will never forget this sight. A month later, they had to leave their house. They took the most valuable things, their animals, and moved to the neighboring village of Krestische to live with their relatives," says Lidia Pisareva.
They managed to put out the fiery torch only in the summer of 1973. They had to dig out this well and close it with liquid concrete under high pressure. For 21 months of gas burning, as much energy has been produced as the whole of humanity consumes per day. Ukraine would have had enough of it for 10 years. And the smoke from the burning fountain was thrown into the atmosphere as much as Ukraine is out as a result of its industrial activity in two years.
Now scientists say that the terrain has suffered more from the fire than from the discarded radiation. Acid rains fell around this well within a radius of several hundred kilometers." In the summer, trees were without leaves. And in winter, there was no snow. Green grass grew around the well within a radius of 200 meters," recalls Nadezhda Diabur.

| This article, but more specifically the comment section where the public and city councilors are sort of going at it debating on what the appropriate responses are (more police funding, less, social services etc.). I just want to get a sense of whether people feel crime has gotten worse, stayed the same, or has safety improved significantly. I walk through central every morning/afternoon to drop/pick up my kid at daycare and it can get uncomfortable at worst but I’ve never felt like I was in immediate danger but maybe I’m being foolish. 2023.06.08 19:38 justthrowitawaycount Fired after 2 months
TLDR: Terminated at will after two months when I mentionted abusive behavior, illegal water dumping, city permit bs, not using my own credit card and wouldn't stay until 11pm and theft occurred on my car ‐-----------------------------------------------------------------
Long story: I worked for a GC and was at will terminated. The VP stated it was due poor performance and some miscommunication about my work hours. Please note I cut out a lot to not make this a novel
I had expressed concerns both face to face and via email about illegal activities and several other concerns listed below
1) They(super and PM) illegally dumpedbwater into the sewer during rain events to hide it.
I applied for a discharge permit with the city and the city helped me fill it out. 3 weeks later they say it was wrong and I need to resubmit with water district approval and a discharge plan. I was not told this when i originally submitted
I go to the water district and fill out the permit with them. Only thing from the application missing was the sewer number. It's not on the plans and the civil eng asks the city in a meeting about it. They say schedule appointment with public works.
During the appointment pw says no storm water can go into the sewer and refuse to give me a number. I submit the imcompete water district permit to the water district. The water district gets back to me and days I submitted the wrong form. I fill out the correct form and resubmit it. We need water testing and after calling aroind find a lab drown the street that isn't listed in their site. Due to an adjacent lot having a leaking underwater well we had to test for additional contaminants. I submitted the testing results to the water district and they went me an approval via mail. I had an appointment scheduled for this upcoming week but I was fired Friday.
2)RFIs. My super bombard me with RFIs. Like 5 a day that were for work we wernt preforming. I asked him to email me the rfis and he said he preferred telling me in person. He wouldn't give a proposed solution as he didn't want to be liable. Would Hand draw things that I would need to mark up in bluebeam. I would go over what we talked about and show my super and he would say it was okay. when I sent him the final version he would be like that's not right change this and that. We would repeat this cycle at least twice. I would sent the final version to my super and PM and once approved by them I would submit it.
I asked if we should be involving the responsible sub and he said he was the super and they would build it the way he told them to. I told him they were the subject matter experts. When I brought it up to my PM he said he didn't want to tell the super how to run his job. But he had Ran into this on different jobs with the super
I went back to my job description and highlighted where it says all rfis should have a proposed solution and I should be reviewing RFIs submitted by subs and my PM emailed back that basically oh well we're gonna do it this way.
There were a several times me PM would say to put in an RFI and i would say wait this was addressed in a previous RFI or the upcoming bulletin and he would say no its not put it in. The design team would get annoyed and say this was already addressed and when I would show my PM he would be like okay well just void it
There were other times when the design team would come back with an answer my super didn't like so I would have to create a follow up. I would tell my super this is why we need to give a proposed solution ans he would yell he didn't want to be liable.
3) forms of payments . The company used checks for payments it would take up to a day to get them. If they're hot maybe a few hours. The company card was only to be used for emergencies and could not have the available credit left to use. My super expected me to use my credit card for expenses that came up last minute and he Was annoyed I wouldn't use my cc. I asked both my super,PM and project executive if they would use their cc and only the project executive told me he would as an last resort . My super would tell me at 2pm telling me he needed a payment for an inspection when the office for inspections closed at 230 and my options were pay In person or online. My PM ans super did not want me to use an echeck they wanted me to go to the main office get a check them go to the city and pay. That couldn't be done in 30 mins or even an hour.
4) My super was rude. He would yell and tell me he couldn't believe I didn't know something. I Walked into a convo where he was talking shit about me and my PM just said i know. When I addressed this with my super,PM and project executive they said well he's old school and you need to grow a thick skin and not take things personally. I talked to the super directly every time it happened. I emailed and talked to HR about this. He would tell our capenters he didn't care how they got shit done just do it and talk down to them. He was rude to subs
5) Internet was non existent the first month I was there. The company only had bluebeam on a vm program. I need that every day using the program was painfully slow due to the internet. To the point it would take 5 mins to load a page. After discussing with my PM I reached out to IT. I followed up after no reply and my PM let me know it would be expensive to upgrade the Internet and they were annoyed I was making a big deal of it. I asked if I could come into the office until it was fixed and was told I needed to be on-site. During this time I was hot spotting my work phone for a better connection but it was still slow. Finally it was I was told I could come in two days a week and they would get me a desk. However I never got a desk and was only allowed to come in one day. If u wanted to come in two days my PM would say no or say he wasn't above the super and needed to ask him.
6) submittals I replaced another PE that got moved off the project to replace another PE that quit. For 3 months the PM did nothing with submittals and waited until my second day during orientation to send me 10 submittals he wanted submitted by EOD. My PM didn't know the system we used to submit Submittals and had the previous PE give me a quick training. I used Google and figured it out on my own. I found some issues with some submittals and marked them up. My PM disregarded my comments and instructed me to submit them as they were minor and the design team rejected them and was annoyed with me. I was having trouble getting in contact with the subs. They wouldn't answer my calls but they would for my super and PM. My project executive said well My expectation is that you work until the work is done. He stayed he stayed until 8 or 11pm some nights. I informed him I was doing 10 hour days but under no circumstance would I be working until 8
7)Note taking my super would not follow the agenda and would skip around. When asked if we could follow the agenda he would start yelling and storm off. I asked if he would like the agenda moved around he would say no.
He gave me an agenda for our sub meetings and then he didn't follow it. It just made it so hard to take accurate notes. Both myself and my PM brought it up to him but he did not care.
8) during all of this my catalytic converter and O2 sensor were stolen at work. I drove the car back on the highway but man was it loud and the fumes were terrible. I called my boss on the way to a shop and he was sympathetic but the next day he was like well why don't you buy a new car? And my super was like can you rent one. I informed them I was too young to rent a car and I would was handling it via insurance. I also reminded them new cars have catalytic converters and this wasnt a like oh my transmission blew, my car was vandlized. I informed them Until I got my car back I would be taking public transportation so I couldn't stay too late as I didn't wanna walk by myself as I didn't feel safe. I could however work on public transportation so I would continue 10 hour days. I was able to use a family members car on some days but they would make me late so I stuck to Public transportation. my PM said I could park the car in the project gates when i got it back. The super lost his shit bcg car would be infront of his blocking him as he left before me. My super kept asking when I would get my car back. I was telling him I needed a police report to make a claim and then I needed the shop to send their estimate and parts were delayed due to supply chain issues.
I feel defeated and am unsure what to do next. I have applied for unemployment and am applying for jobs, working with recruiters and am reaching out to my network. I am trying to not let this sour me about construction but idk if I wamma work in this industry anymore

2023.06.08 19:38 snarkthrowaway1111 Donavons job and what to do next
Last night a group of some of the OG bedazzled snarkers messaged Scott Lasseter of Hub City Upholstery in Hattiesburg Mississippi where Donavon works. We made it clear that Donavon needed to stop his disgusting racist online tirade because people in the sub were wanting to come for Scott’s business. Scott assured us that he would have a talk with Donavon the following morning. We can all assume that happened because after Donavon got home from work, he went on twitter and started liking posts of people being killed or killing themselves, those videos include: a black man getting ran over, two blurred out vehicles running over a black man’s entire body, a video of a black man getting shot in the face, a black man getting shot in the head (gore visible), south asian man getting shot with an ak-47 (very graphic, head basically exploded), isis video containing multiple tortures, shootings, and executions (very gory), black girl accidentally shooting cousin and then killing herself (no gore but still very disturbing), and a (possibly biracial or light skin) man getting stabbed graphically with a screwdriver. this behavior is dangerous. he had a chance to stop, and he decided to be worse. he is not a safe person in society and he is not a safe person to raise a child.
i am also strongly emphasizing that Scott has nothing to do with what Donavon has done, as he is not on social media. he shouldn’t be harassed except to put pressure on firing Donavon.

2023.06.08 19:35 intriguedmaverick Living in Brazil from a gringo's perspective
A small caveat: I am new to this sub, and these have been my personal experiences and impressions while living in Brazil; but they may not be indicative of others who live or have lived here.
This month marks the two-year point that I’ve been living in the country with my Brazilian wife. Currently, I’m living in the interior of the state of São Paulo and I LOVE it here. The interior of São Paulo has very little crime, the people are incredible, and the infrastructure is very good. We get invited to churrascos and pizza night every week. I could write a book about all the good experiences that we had in São Paulo.
However, I used to live in the south of Brazil in the state of Santa Catarina in a city called Joinville.
Vou falar sem rodeios: It was a literal hell on earth for my wife and I. During my first month in Joinville, I was by myself, got lost and I asked a local for directions and he said something along the lines of “
vai se ferrar!” (translated as “go screw yourself!”) I asked a second guy and he completely ignored me. People from Joinville are notorious for being rude and cold, but I also met a handful of joinvilenses who were nice and friendly. When I walked in the street, I always said
oi,
opa, or
bom dia to everyone, but you will get ignored most of the time. It is also incredibly difficult to make friends there; my wife and I had the goal of inviting people to our house every week to play games and to eat, but only the Venezuelans, Haitians, Americans and Brazilians (outside of the south of Brazil) accepted. My wife is from Macapá and she faced A TON of racism even as a native Brazilian, and a few times natives of Joinville told me to go back to Argentina even though I’m not from there LOL. My wife and I had the same reception in Porto Alegre and in Curitiba. However, the north, northeastern, and rural areas of Brazil blew me away with their warm hospitality. I taught at a local high school in Santa Catarina, and the kids from Joinville bullied the Haitians and Venezuelan students. I don’t recommend the south of Brazil if you’re learning Portuguese; the people aren’t generally too patient. São Paulo was such a stark contrast; the people aren't xenophobic, they were helpful and friendly, and they were happy with anyone that tried to learn their language. For me, this just goes to show that one cannot judge a country by just one city or region. There are friendly and rude enclaves in every country.
Here are the amazing benefits of living in Brazil: Health: Brazilian healthcare is actually REALLY good. Calling an ambulance is free, you can go to any PA (pronto atendimento) for free, and their private hospitals have incredible doctors.
Nature: Brazil is one of the most beautiful countries in this world, and there is such a huge array of places to travel and places to see.
People: Generally, Brazilians are eager to help, friendly, and will go out of their way to make sure that you have a good experience.
Food: Brazil has such a vast a delicious variety of exotic fruits, foods, and barbecue. This deserves an extensive post in itself.
Infrastructure: The country is very modernized, the public transportation works very well, and I’ve had very few internet issues. The public transportation is way better in Brazil compared to the US.
Affordable: Living in Brazil is very affordable. My wife and I pay about $10 per month for our electricity bill and $300 for rent in São Paulo (although we rented for $120 per month in Joinville). Overall, we spend about $700 (≈3500 reais) per month for all of our expenses combined. Just be warned that technology (cell phones, computers, TVs) is CRAZY expensive in Brazil.
Here are the downsides to living in Brazil: Safety: I’m not going to sugar-coat it; Brazil is a dangerous country. I’ve stared down the barrel of an assault rifle, and my wife and I have been followed at night on a couple of occasions. This isn’t to say that every city in Brazil is dangerous, but you have to keep your eyes peeled when you’re going out. Although many say that the south of Brazil is safe, it’s not exactly true. Porto Alegre has a murder rate of 34 per 100,000 inhabitants, Curitiba has a murder rate of 41 whereas Rio de Janeiro has a murder rate of 13 (1). The safest cities in Brazil are usually found in the interior of the state of São Paulo and parts of Santa Catarina (2). Lastly, if you’re concerned about safety, it’s better to live in a large apartment complex because the security is much better than renting a house.
Police: I’m sure there’s some good cops trying to keep law in order, but overall, the Brazilian police suck. We knew some neighbors that got burglarized in Joinville. It took three hours for the police to arrive, and the thieves left clear fingerprints on all the windows. My friends asked the police, “Aren’t you going to take samples of the fingerprints?” The police said “who do you think we are? CSI Miami?” Lastly, the police didn’t do anything when my wife was sexually assaulted in a beauty parlor. So.... yeah, they are a waste of space and tax dollars in my opinion.
Corruption: If you live in Brazil, corruption is going to affect you in some way. Don’t worry about getting mugged in Brazil; be more worried about the big Brazilian corporations like the internet companies, the Brazilian banks, the electricity companies, etc. I’ve been robbed on the street just two times from Uber drivers, but I’ve been robbed by big Brazilian businesses on COUNTLESS occasions. Whatever you do, DO NOT GET VIVO INTERNET SERVICES. Lastly, save yourself dozens of headaches, and get yourself a good, local Brazilian lawyer.
Noise: If you’re someone that loves peace and quiet but hates a lot of noise, Brazil is not the country for you, my friend. You’ll hear dogs barking all night, fireworks, the neighbors arguing, soccer matches, the couple next door making passionate love, the churros truck, the gas truck, the Atacadão deals truck, the egg car, late-night parties, and motorcycle fanatics so loud that cause even the deaf to hear. If you don’t like noise, be sure to bring a few pairs of ear plugs or shotgun earmuffs (or both).
Overall, I love living in Brazil, and I will be so sad when I leave at the end of this year. I hope that someone finds this post useful.

2023.06.08 19:32 zhyatt Missing Delta This Week
I fly weekly for work. 90% of my flights are Delta, but every once in a while, I get stuck with a city that's just too expensive or too inconvenient from LAX. This week was Des Moines.
Originally, my flights were fine. Connect in Phoenix, reasonable layover, window seats. Then I wake up at 630AM to find my 930AM flight has been delayed over 3 hours due to mechanical issues and all my new options to make it to Des Moines are 1 or 2 stops through other cities with barely any seats left.
Ended up on a flight to Charlotte with a 3 hour layover and then a flight from Charlotte to DSM landing just before midnight. Middle seats both ways.
I'm just grateful I had JUST enough AA miles to snag a one-day Admiral's Club pass so my layover won't be quite as miserable. Just a fun 13 hour door-to-door travel day if nothing else goes wrong. Yay?
The kicker is there WERE options to Des Moines, they were just way too expensive for my work to cover... up to $1500 when I checked this morning to see if I could convince my travel department to make the switch for me.

2023.06.08 19:15 scarier_duckling I don't wan't to visit my Dad anymore but I feel like it might drive him to suicide
My(16m) parents have been divorced for going on three years now and have shared custory of me an my brothers. My eldest brother doesn't visit my dad on the weekends or during holidays anymore because they don't have the space for him to sleep in their flat. Me and my other brother still do visit him, but I have been going less and less because he lives in another city where I can't see my friends as often and I don't have my own personal space (Me and my brother sleep in my fathers work room, me on a couch and him on an inflatable mattress, there is not much space left in the room with both beds and a table).
Soon the Summer holidays will start and half of it I will probably be spending at my dads, even though I don't want to, the lack of my own space, I can't see my friends or boyfriend, I don't like his new wife and their shower is the worst which makes me not want to shower for the whole 3 Weeks.
However, my dad has had depression for more than a decade now and had had multipe suicide attempts or theats since then, one of which was last year, if I remember correctly, his wife called me and told me we couldn't come over for the week end because he was going to spend some time in a psychiatry. He didn't want to do that and fled, during that time he texted me, how he was sorry and he didn't see a point in living and how me and my one brother(the one who still visits him are the reason he was still hanging on, at first I was scared that he might kill himself right there. After that he said he was comming to pick me and my brother up that evening and that scared me for all of our safetys, luckily I was able to convince him to wait for the police who were looking for him because of his suicide threat. Since then I have felt bad for not going to his place anymore, I haven't been there in 2 months (we usually go there every second weekend). And I don't want to during the holidays, but I am scared of what he might do I I sop comming.
I know it's unlikely but the thought of it scares me.

2023.06.08 19:11 Hot-Wallaby-6402 TN- Human remains (ashes in urns ⚱️) left in storage unit after auction, what do I do with them?
So I've got several properties I manage in TN and recently with the last auction we had several units that buyers left some legal paperwork and urns full of ashes in.
Now neither me nor the company have dealt with this before but we do a clause in our auction agreement that if legal paperwork, human remains, guns, and a few other things listed are found by the buyer they are required to turn that over to us for proper disposal/handling. Anyways, I've spoken to a few local funeral homes and they've told me that I can't trash the ashes because if for whatever reason years down the road someone comes looking for them I or the company could be liable for disposing of it. And on the other hand I've spoken to 2 different police departments about this and was told that I could just trash them if I've documented that I've made a reasonable effort to contact surviving relatives. Now here's the pickle, I don't know who to listen to on this and I'd really hope to not have to hire a lawyer on this.

Are used to be heavily into the auction scene, one of my favorites was the Richmond city police confiscated items, Auction. It has been several years and since I attended one, and do not remember the site to get the information on said auctions. If anyone knows this information, please pass it along.
