2023.03.22 21:36 iLikeGreenTea Looking for a budget-friendly chill beach town similar to Isla Mujeres and Hotbox. How do parts of DR, PR, other Mexican beaches compare?

I turn to this community for great suggestions and advice.
I have a favorite place in the Mexican Riviera and have been 4 times. It is small - some might argue too small - and now I'm thinking I could go elsewhere. For Dominican Republic: I have only been to Santo Domingo & Playa Boca Chica. For Puerto Rico: I have been to Vieques which is amazing but somewhat obnoxious to get to (another internal puddle jumper plane). Belize: I've been to Caye Caulker twice - it's good. Costa Rica: Puerto Viejo on Caribe side - also quite nice and chill, however a 6 hour bus ride from San Jose airport. Panama: San Blas Islands. Very beautiful. I had a great experience on an overnight on a catamaran. Potential option to go back but it's more of an adventure.
Looking for another suggestion.
Criteria:

budget friendly. Some Caribbean islands are too pricey. Hostels are fine, or accommodation up to $50 / night. I am traveling solo.
easy flight from NY/DC/Miami.
no crazy loud party scene like parts of Tulum (or think Ibiza)
possible activities like reef snorkeling or other nature-based excursions, but not essential. Chilling and reading on the beach or wading in the water is fine for this trip. Love cenotes, that's why I keep going back to Mexico.
a good beach. This means not a crummy dirty strip of sand, or the beach has riptides (a lot of the Caribe side of Costa Rica when I visited). Prefer soft sand and calm turquoise water Also not fun: the entire beach is occupied by large hotels or resorts and no public access unless you're a paying guest... ugh.
Any part of Florida I am overlooking? That might save on flight but perhaps not on accommodation and gas...

Maybe you've had a few relationships before but you never clicked very deeply with any of them (and/or they were just too immature), and you're looking for a relationship that's much deeper and more meaningful than that. Or maybe you've never had anyone that you've connected well enough to to feel that they really understand you. ...while I can't promise that we'll click well enough for that to happen, I'd like that to be the goal, and there's certainly a non-zero chance of it happening haha.
Perhaps you're REALLY wanting to be able to fully dive into a relationship as soon as you graduate, and are looking forward to, not necessarily Prom [although possibly that too], but also/mostly just would love to be able to take a long romantic vacation / visit once you're done with school and have some freedom. Before I get too far ahead of myself, let you tell you a little about me. I'm 39 (but I look a bit younger), white, 5'11" and relatively slim at 165 lbs. I enjoy walking and jogging in the park, as well as exploring new parks / seeing new places and new scenery. As far as games go, I'm primarily (almost entirely) a PC gamer, but I occasionally play some console games (primarily older consoles). My favorite thing to do is to cuddle up and watch something fun or interesting, such as movies, YouTube (I watch a lot of YouTube), Anime, Netflix, or Kdramas (occasionally). So you need to at minimum be someone whom would enjoy cuddling up and watching things together with me haha ... but then, almost everyone enjoys doing that. As for requirements for you, I'm pretty open minded on most things, so I'll try to keep the requirements pretty minimal. Ideally I'm looking for someone that's white or Asian, or some mix thereof (i.e. if you're 50/50, or 50/50 white or Asian and something else, that's fine). I'd consider making exceptions to this for the right person, if we really clicked otherwise. ;) Age wise, while it would be nice to find someone about to graduate HS (and is excited to use their newfound freedom to explore so many new things in life and the world), I'm willing to consider someone a bit older, up to early to mid 20s, as long as we share a number of interests and you feel like you're looking for something similar to what I've described. It's more that I'm looking for someone with a certain mindset and/or at a certain point in their life, not necessarily that they're SUPER young. My main requirement is, as someone that's slim (and sometimes athletic, when I have time to get more exercise), I need you to also BE [as opposed "working on it"] average weight or below, and plan to stay there (but also to expect me to as well - I don't expect anything from a partner that I don't have at LEAST as high expectations of myself about). I find petite girls super cute, but average size girls are fun and cute as well! Both sizes have their fun and interesting points haha, so I'm fine if you're either one.
Anyways, I think I've talked long enough for now haha, but that gives you a decent idea what I'm looking for plus some basics about me. As the title says, while ideally I'd love to find someone within 3 hours of Harrisonburg, VA, I'm willing to consider someone anywhere in the US (probably just the lower 48 states). Drives longer than 3 hours are definitely still very plausible, possibly even 8 or 10 hours perhaps, and flying is an option if you live significantly further away (plus points if you live anywhere remotely near a major airport, but that's not a requirement). Anyways, my point is, if you're further away than a few hours drive, I'd need you to be willing to travel / work with the distance when the time comes - particularly with the drastically increased costs of gas/travel these days. For example, if you're pretty far away, then after the first visit or two, we'd probably need to be planning longer visits when one of us travels to the other. Anyways, I'm not looking to rush into meeting, but I'm also NOT INTERESTED in an online only relationship. We need to start meeting in person in the relatively near future (i.e. a few weeks or so (possibly several weeks if you're far), assuming we talk a good bit during those few weeks). Also, I'm willing to come to you the first visit (or perhaps more) if you're far, but after the first visit or two you'd need to be willing to visit me (I might be willing to pay for your flight if you can't, we'll see), as that's going to be a LOT cheaper than me flying out somewhere, getting a hotel, and renting a car. On the other hand, if you're much closer, within a reasonably driving range, if needed I could pick you up in my car once you're ready to visit (and I can just drive to you for the first few visits). And if you're within 3 hours or so drive, I'm happy to drive to you for several visits at first, until you're ready to visit me. Regardless of the timing, I'm not going to pressure you do visit me before you're comfortable doing so, and it's something we can play by ear. For example, if you're someone that's super shy I understand if it takes a few extra times of me visiting you before you're ready to visit me, or perhaps we need to chat some extra time first, etc.

My life has been going well for the most part lately and I feel horrible for even thinking of wanting to die to escape the pain. I have 2 kids that need me and a family that loves me, but love doesn't buy new teeth.
I did it to myself back in highschool by throwing up after each meal. I don't smile often and when I actually do I have to cover my mouth because I don't want others to be grossed out by my teeth. Most of the time I just grin to the right side. My kids don't like me going to their school, meeting their friends and teachers because they are embarrassed of my mouth. I try not to show it, but that hurts more than the physical pain I endure from the infection that is spreading.
Anyways, thanks for taking time to read this and I hope that you (the reader) live in a country that would help with dental problems.

Hello everyone, I know a lot of people requested pics of once I got my teeth done and I have photos here - description from OP: a photo of OOP. So before the turn of the year I made a confession about my oral pain caused by my teeth. I didn't think I would receive much attention if any at all. Well, I was surprised after so many people shared their stories and offered to help. I got a lot in donations and had a couple of offers to do the procedure for free. The story blew up after the offers (most notably sushiandwow and danhook) and picked up by many websites. I am nothing but grateful to each and every person that made this all possible.
After checking to make sure danhook is who he said he was I took him up on his offer to go see him and let him help me. On Feb 1st (Super Bowl Sunday) I went down to Florida to get a hotel room before I met him on Monday. He is cool as sh*+. Totally chill guy that knows what he's talking about and very professional. Anyways, we discussed about what he was going to do and about the timeline for everything since I was only down there until Friday. Wednesday he took out all my top teeth and I got a denture for it. He told me that he wants to save the bottom teeth and after discussing it with another Doctor there they decided it was best. Which I am excited about because a bottom denture would suck.
So as of right now I have a denture on top and nothing was done on my bottom. Sometime in Mid-May to early June I will be going back down to get my permanent top denture, maybe some implants, and get all my bottom teeth fixed. I learned a lot while down there about how to take care and restore my gums and what I need to do so all of this isn't for nothing.
I had an amazing time from the time I left until the time I was home. I did so many new things and it was all thanks to the reddit community. Without you guys, gals and others I would still be in pain.
If anyone has any questions I will try to answer them and I'm sure the dentist danhook will chime in a time or two.
Edit 2/22/2015: Got my kids for the first time since the operation and they love the new teeth. Everybody at work seems to like them as well. I still get people that are jealous, but that's natural. I've been preaching to my kids about the importance of oral care and to not end up like me. Their mom and I don't have good genes when it comes to teeth, so they need to brush, floss and use mouthwash when after breakfast and before going to sleep.

This question is: which would you choose.... A pashmina or a Turkish towel?
I'm not the scarf-as-an-accessory type, but I am often chilly. I'm also not a little wisp of a thing. I'm 5'10" and a size 14 tall/long.
I travel to: - the office, one week at a time, a few times a year - the beach approx. once/year, so having protection against the sun and chilly evening breezes would be nice (I'm looking at you San Diego!) - a variety of destinations (my husband and I take a trip every spring - one year, the American Southwest; this year, Switzerland)
Once we arrive by plane, we're often on trains or in a car. We sleep in airbnbs or hotels, we aren't camping or staying in hostels. We're sight-seers, not backpackers. (if any of that makes a difference)
I'd love something versatile enough to use for my daily yoga practice, but I understand if neither option is good for this.
I'm also open to other ideas as long as they're lightweight and packable!
So.... What say you, my trusty bunch of travelers? Thanks!

2023.03.22 19:04 peasant_mouse Help with killing time in Korinthos and Athens

It's my first time travelling, and budget solo-female travelling at that, so I think I made a mistake in planning too much time in Greece. I planned 15 days total. I arrived on the 20th and booked 6 nights in Korinthos.
However, I'm quickly finding that I'm struggling to fill the time. I had planned day-trips from Korinthos, but it turns out there are not as many routes via KTEL out of the city as suggested online on Rome2Rio. Many of the cities only have one or two routes a day, which would defeat the day-trip plans. I can't find any reputable bus route information online, all I have is a photo of the routes from the station, and tomorrow I will visit the station in Isthmia to see what other options I have.
I had also planned a trip up to Thessaloniki, then Florina, with day trips from those cities to take up 8 more days, but now the trains are down, and I dislike multi-hour-long bus rides. But that leaves me with a grand total of 9 days in Athens (I have to catch an inflexible flight out on the 4th). Already in Korinthos I'm feeling so stagnant and alone. I planned the entire day today for exploring Ancient Corinth and walking around the city, but I ended up finishing in Corinth after 2 hours and then sitting on the beach for 4 hours talking on the phone with a friend. I feel like I'm wasting my trip. Sure, I could cancel my booking here, bus to another random location and get a hotel, but I'm not so spontaneous, I get anxious that I'll get stranded somewhere and I'm on a very tight budget for accommodation.
For Korinthos I'm thinking:
-check if there is a day-trip-feasible route to Nafplion from Isthmia
-day-trip to xylokastro or derveni? Those are the only frequent enough routes that wouldn't make me anxious about getting stranded.
Still one day empty.
For Athens I'm thinking:
-2 or 3 days for exploring athens maybe?
-a couple of island day trips, maybe Egina and Salamina
-Day-trip to Sounion
That still leaves me with 3 empty days.
tdlr; need cheap things to fill up time near Korinthos and Athens

All I knew is I had 1100 grafts done in 2016 in US at a cost of 7700$ and they obviously didn't take that well. I got an appt at a hair mill called Hermest. They were $1800 . What could go wrong.... I spent no time in advance drawing hairline or really even thinking about it. They got me in at 6am, shaved my head, drew a hairline better than my 18 year old self had, and started poking and plugging. They said it was 3100 grafts but I didn't count and they don't charge by the graft so who gives a fuck. Yes I have some doubles in the hair line but at least I got a hair line! 😊
$1800 got you transfer and a hotel for 2 nights. I stayed in the hotel for another 3 nights to recooperate at a cost of $50 a night. Then I doned my bucket hat and rented a car (cheap as fuck $200 for a new car) and drove around Turkieye for 2 more weeks. Saw all the beautiful beaches I couldn't get in and Cappadocia. What a beautiful country and it's hard to even spend money everything is so cheap.
I am on vitamins and shampoo they sold me when I was completely out of it. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. I have been on fin for years and started min a month or so post transplant.

I'm hoping to plan a big family trip next year for my family of four and both sets of grandparents. The biggest issue for us is food. The resort needs to be vegan or at least very vegan friendly/ accommodable. I've read many somewhat recent trip advisor reports about certain hotels being very happy to meet dietary demands. However, I'm looking for real up-to-date experiences from people. The acquisition of vegan meals often becomes quite tiresome and problematic and energy draining. I want it to be smooth and seamless. Hoping for an all-inclusive that is a nice one, Mid to upper level that can suit a vegan diet, is nice and is kid friendly. My kids are fairly young so a couple pools and the beach is probably enough to keep them entertained for the time we're there. Dominican, Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica Turks I don't care, I just want to find one that will actually be a good one.

2023.03.22 16:11 Professional_Mix8631 How to decline an all expenses paid trip to Barcelona.

I work for a UK based company and I’m one of a handful of employees in North America. This is my second month in the role so I’m fairly new. The company does an annual trip to do some team bonding/brainstorming ect and this year they’ve chosen Spain. Sounds amazing right? Here’s the problem. I’m extremely introverted and very much a homebody and the thought of going on this trip is giving me severe anxiety for a few reasons.

Flights. The company wants to be as cost effective as possible so instead of flying straight to Spain, we (the North American team) are flying to the UK a few days before and staying at a coworkers parents house for 2 nights before flying to Spain with the rest of the team.
Hotel rooms. I’d be sharing a hotel room with someone (obviously) but it would be essentially a total stranger as I haven’t really met any of the other woman on the team because the rest of the North American team are men.
The whole company is talking about how the trip is gonna be one big party and everyone’s going to be drinking and staying out late maybe going to clubs (we are all fairly young and work in tech). I don’t drink nor do I like going out to bars etc. I’d love a relax beach holiday but it sounds like it’s going to be work and team building during the day and partying all night.

There’s a few other reason I don’t want to go but those are the major ones. I don’t know if any introverts out there understand how much this trip sounds like a nightmare but I’m really trying to figure out a way I can politely decline or come up with a believable excuse to not go without seeming like an ungrateful new hire. Worth mentioning also flights are not booked yet but will be soon so I need to say something before they book them.

2023.03.22 15:40 bunnieho my honest takes on abby and ellie

I know nobody really asked but I just feel like typing this out somewhere. Im trying to make this as simple as possible with everything going on in the plot and this will obviously contain alot of spoilers for both parts of the game and the series as well!

Abby is a great character written in a way where a lot of conflicting emotions take control of the player. You feel angry at her for killing Joel and I think the writers did a great job at hiding who Abby was until it was time for the player to know her position. Its made obvious she suffered alot and got very heavy trauma when Joel killed her father but we can also see her recovering from that throughout the game (her nightmares take a more positive turn). However I do find it weird how people justify the whole golf-incident. Her father died but she must have connected the dots: Ellie must have been very important to Joel for him to do what he did at the hospital. She went after Joel for 4 years and realized golfing wasnt as satisfying as she thought it would be and didnt give her the closure she was hoping for (which is an immediate paralell to Ellie at the beach when she let Abby leave with Lev ) Im just wondering how killing Joel was somehow right or justified. Joel killed to save a life, Abby killed to get revenge (Im also wondering how Abbys revenge was somehow more valid than Ellies) I love the relationship between Lev and Abby and I do feel like it made Abby understand Joels choices a bit more.
Ellie is a very strong minded character. I love how we see her growing up. She has a good sense of humour and I really like seeing her with Joel. The museum flashback is one of my favourites and it always makes me shed a few tears. During the game we see her get more independent and this is also made clear in the scene with Tommy, Joel and Ellie when Tommy takes Ellie to shoot some of the infected and urges her to (maybe go to the hotel? I cant really remember) with Joel. Ellie cannot do anything without the help of Joel in this scene and you start feeling a bit frustrated when Joel has to do everything for you. I believe this is a clear sign of the fact she is growing up and is getting more independent and how Joel is slowing it down in a sense. She didnt overreact in the scene where Joel confessed to what had happened at the hospital. Ellie was feeling a lot of survivors guilt over the deaths of Riley, Tess, Sam and Henry and though she could have made them count for something by sacrificing herself . She felt like Joel took that away from her. Joel had also been lying about this for like 2 years at this point so she had little to no trust in him. After the golfing incident when Ellie decides to go after Tommy with Dina she goes through a really tough journey. She kills alot of ppl and even though this is mostly concidered her "revenge" I also feel like on top of that its her trying to forgive herself for wasting all that time being angry at Joel instead of enjoying the limited time with him. Ellie leaving Dina was not only Tommys fault. I think she was planning on leaving as soon as she figured out where Abby was. Obviously Tommy aided her, but Ellie was going to do it anyway. As I mentioned earlier, Ellie didnt find the kind of satisfaction or closure she had hoped for at the beach. I feel like she partially healed on her way back as she also had Dinas bracelet on even though she took it off for Santa Barbara

What I dont understand is how people say Abby is better than Ellie in the sense that she didnt kill as many people as Ellie did. We dont see enough of Abbys backstory, and she was hunting Joel down for 4 years so I bet she went through a few people. She also mentioned how she was ready to torture patrol guards at Jackson so I bet if Joel hadnt stumbled into her it would have taken many people at Jackson to pay the price.
I also have to throw this out there: how come people say "Oh you missed the point of the game" when you prefer one over the other. Its clear how both Joel and Ellie are parallels to Abby, Owen and Lev are basically Dina and Jesse and so on. I can have preferences without missing the point.

2023.03.22 14:24 abolishpineapple MS Heat Flashes HELPPPPP!!!

Hi guys, some background younger sister(20) has MS and does tysabri infusions monthly. After her diagnosis, she's become very sensitive to heat, we went for a walk along the beach one day (i live on the beach for college) and it was sunny 70's and she started overheating. She tried to hide it for as long as she could, but I could tell she was starting to get uncomfortable. She doesn't like getting babied so i let her take the lead in these situations, but i take over when needed. We ended up calling my roommate to come to pick us up because I didn't want her to walk back while she wasn't feeling well. While we waited in the shade, she ended up throwing up and just overall not feeling well. I've done a lot of research on MS after she got her diagnosis and I understand that the overheating has to do with brain and nerve damage.
Well we're going on vacation to Mexico this upcoming week and the weather is 75-80's, I want her to have a really fun time because she deserves to just be young and enjoy life, but I understand that MS symptoms aren't something you can just put on hold. I'm just looking for advice and recommendations on what works for others when they're overheating and what they wish others around them did when they're having a moment like that. I typically just try not to make it big deal so she doesn't feel bad. I've already ordered a little electric hand fan to keep in my bag for her and will keep the hotel room cold. Any advice would be appreciated!! Thank you in advance

Want to experience Thailand to the max, what is the best way to do this? Which cities/islands/places to visit?
We like: *Beaches (preferably a pool-side resort with plenty of activities like climbing, scuba diving, etc) *Hiking/boat trips/swimming/any couples activity *FOOD (obviously, also getting drinks by the beach with good music)
Not looking to party, just a nice vacation with lots of activities. We are not an active couple, and have always done city trips, but we do like hiking and want to go out of our comfort zone to try to experience Thailand in the best way possible.
I think it is such a waste to spend 2 weeks in a hotel by the pool.
We would not like to visit more than 2 places, so ideally a week in 2 different locations.

Tinanong ko lang kung me pharmacy ba malapit para makabili ng gamot ko. Tas ang sabi niya sa akin, “wala ka namang sakit ah. Yang anxiety na yan, wag mo kasing isipin para di sumpungin.” Or something like that. Tas yon medyo sumama loob ko, I decided to go to my room para mapag isa. Tas after two days, pumasok siya sa room ko, kung ano ano sinasabi and umiiyak. Ako raw may kasalanan kung bat inaatake ng sakit bf niya. Sa tuwing nag-aaway kami, yan panlaban niya sa akin, ako may kasalanan kung bat di maayos lagay ng jowa niya. May point na namisikal na siya sa akin. Take note na 18 years old ako non (now 19 turning 20 this year). On and off away namin ni mama.
Hanggang sa kahapon lang, sinisante ako ng jowa niya dahil nakilagpalit ako ng shift sa katrabaho namin dahil di ko kaya magmorning shift at hirap ako sa umaga and may hangover ako (dito sa part na may hangover ako, for sure dito ako mali). Pumayag naman yung katrabaho ko kasi pinag iisipan din niyang magmorning shift para masundo niya anak niya. Di naman naapektuhan yung takbo ng hotel dahil nagswap lang naman kami. Lumabas ng room nila jowa niya, galit na galit tas yun sinisante ako. Sabi rin ni mama sa kaniya na nagswap kami para nga masundo nung katrabaho ko anak niya. Then few hours later, sinabi ni mama na kaya ako nakipagswap dahil may hangover ako. Tas yun kung ano ano sinasabi sa akin. Addict daw ako sa Marijuana, which is di naman. I tried pero di ako addict don.
Ngayon I’m looking for another job. Toxic rin environment dito. Also, nagbabalak na ako magmove out if makahanap ako ng trabaho dahil wala namang nangyayari sa aming maganda pag magkakasama kami. Kaso, ayaw ni mama na mawala ako sa paningin niya. Napakacontrolling sa akin yung magagalit pag naglalock ako ng pinto dahil nagbibihis ako and all the other small things. Idk if I should really move out or not. I can’t decide for myself. I just don’t want to surround myself with toxic and negative energies dahil nakakadrain. Alam ko ring mahirap mag move out pero I will for independency and feel ko di ako naggogrow sa flat dahil they’re still treating me like a kid
