2023.06.09 15:43 purepwnage85 Got called out doing 480kts in my A380
| Now before anyone says anything, I'm a First Officer with Emirates, so obviously I can afford the gen, but my wife won't let the AD take her out on a date so I'd be waiting until retirement to get a gen hulk. So, last Friday I was doing my usual EK215 service from DXB to KLAX, we were flying over northern California and I was dreaming about spending a few days at Venice beach over the weekend oogling women with fake tits and trying to impress them with my hulk sub and the fact the I'm a pilot. Short while into my daydream the Captain tells me to wake the fuck up and get on to tower for the landing clearance and vectors. This startled me and I somehow hit my knee off the yoke which cancels the autopilot put the plane into a dive. The captain starts shouting at me but before he had finished I managed to get the wings level and everything was fine. The whole ordeal lasted about 20 seconds. The next thing I hear on the coms is someone on the guard frequency saying "Speedbird 1604 heavy PAN-PAN PAN-PAN PAN-PAN". For people not familiar with flying, guard frequency is for emergencies but 99% of the time it's a bunch of losers in cesnas making meow sounds and saying en-guard. Anyway, I'm like, shit this is fucking serious so I respond, "Speedbird 1604 this is EK215 heavy we receive you loud and clear please tell us the nature of your distress and we will relay to the tower" Few seconds pass and I'm shitting myself thinking some English gentleman flying a 777 or A380 might be swimming in the Pacific. We soon get another coms. "Speedbird 1604 heavy this is KLAX tower please state the nature of your emergency" Then the English gentleman comes on again "This is Speedbird 1604 heavy I repeat PAN-PAN PAN-PAN PAN-PAN, our first officer is disoriented, it seems he was blinded by the reflection off of a fake rolex worn by someone flying an Emirates A380, requesting immediate vectors back to KLAX and emergency vehicles on standby" The communication continued while my face turned a beetroot red. "Speedbird 1604 heavy this is KLAX tower please proceed to heading one eight zero left to intercept the localazier, and when able please tell us the souls on board and fuel remaining. Emirates 215 heavy, when able please take down this phone number and make contact when on ground on LAX" At this point I was shitting myself and didn't fking know what to say so I kept my mouth shut. Again, for people unfamiliar with flying, when tower gives you a number to take down, this means you're in deep, DEEP, DEEP SHIT. I kept hiking I should have done a gen or deep xtal swap while the captain was giving me the Bert stare from Bert and earnie. My captain picks up the coms and on the guard frequency announces "Speedbird 1604 heavy this is EK215 heavy, I apologise for the incompetence of my first officer and this should be a lesson to everyone, we should be buying gen rolexes." At the moment he same time all I can hear on the guard frequency is a bunch of losers flying cesnas making meow sounds and bragging about how even they can afford a gen Rolex. The captain then proceeds to tell me it's my job to contact the number tower gave me and he won't be backing me up in any way shape or form. Once we land, I found out that the English gentleman announced to the whole flight the reason for the delay was my fake rolex and how they wouldn't be getting home until the next day. I was prepared to be stoned and lashed when I landed at LAX, all for wearing a VSF Sub. After we land, I called the number tower gave me, the guy on the other end asked me if I was the first officer who forced the BA pilot to make an emergency landing because of the reflection off my fake rolex. I swallow a giant lump down my throat. He announces he's the manager of the beverly hills rolex dealership and has an appointment for me to come in the next day. Apparently he has some OP's in stock and I can have my pick. submitted by purepwnage85 to RepTime [link] [comments] |
2023.06.09 15:41 Dry-Dragonfruit-6412 Do I trust my doctor?
Hi everyone, I've made another post here not too long ago but I was diagnosed with PCOS around 2 years ago. Today I had a doctor's appointment to get some results as I was just getting some testing done before I got another referral for my Gyno to potentially change the birth control I'm on as it has stopped working as effectively and I'm having more symptoms then usual. My doctor (who is male) said according to my blood test results only thing off was my estrogen levels, they were low which was fair for when I took the blood test in my cycle, but the internal scan I had done (different place to my first one that I was diagnosed with) said there was nothing wrong, my left ovary was a little higher then it should be but I don't have PCOS or signs of Endometriosis and there is nothing wrong with me.
This to me makes no sense at all, how does something like PCOS just magically disappear? The place I went for the second internal is known to miss things (told me there was nothing up with external scans for 4-5 years) and I'm not sure if it is just them or if something else is going on.
My doctor also told me to start on new meds, so instead of a combination pill (something we found out worked to stop excessive periods and pain) he wants me to take a progesterone only pill called 'noriday', he didn't discuss options with me he just told me and my mum I had to take it and if anyone has experience with it any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm unsure if I would skip my period (we worked out I can't do that) or even if it would be safer to ignore him and stay on the combo pill for now (femme-tab).
Any advice or ideas are appreciated, I'm just at a loss here because something isn't right.

2023.06.09 15:32 dooburt DawnCraft and Valhelsia Enhanced Vanilla EU: The Great Beyond!
I'm running a growing community of modded Minecraft servers called
The Great Beyond.
Currently, I - now becoming we - are running:
DawnCraft One of the most recent and fastest growing additions is DawnCraft. It is like Skyrim for Minecraft and is fiendishly hard, with 30+ new bosses, hundreds of new structures and a quest line. Oh, there is even a new fighting stance too (Epic Fight), which looks really cool.
If you choose to play DawnCraft, you can't be a wimp. It takes a good pile of determination. Prepare to die (it's easily done and happens a lot) and luck certainly favours the brave!
DawnCraft for us has been popular and we have seen a group of dedicated players on a lot. They've learnt the game and have been helping those who are new. They group up to build bases and take down bosses - and build the occasional bonkers mob farm. We've developed the spawn: we have a subway system to take you out from spawn, a chairlift - for laughs - and numerous bits and pieces to explore, considering it's early version DawnCraft, we're stable and have good pings and TPS.

Mining types, machines, weapons and tools are locked behind your ability to use them and you have to earn the right to use them with XP. A lot of players find that early progression off-putting and don't appreciate the grind. This is not a pack for the light-hearted!

2023.06.09 15:32 Ilikewineandpopcorn How long after bleaching should I wait to lighten some more to avoid damage?) (4C hair)
Incoming storytime for context/venting purposes. Feel free to skip to the last paragraph. No pics because I am too shy but I will try to be as descriptive as possible.
Late last year I had my short, virgin, dark brown, 4C (afro-textured) hair to be bleached. My goal originally was platinum blonde, (#9-10) but I was really inspired by Solange Knowles warm blonde hair, so I went for that instead. My stylist (I will call them stylist “A”) delivered this in one process. I was pleased but decided it was TOO warm for me personally, (it was literally just like Solange so more “yellowy” than I felt suited me). I decided to tell her I wanted to go lighter when I came back for a root touch up.
I only waited 1 month before I went back for root touch up. I will call this fact Possible Mistake #1. I only had about a quarter inch of new growth at the time. Stylist A (to my surprise) was not the person there to do my touch up, it was her apprentice (Stylist B.) I feel several more Possible Mistakes were made during this second visit. First of Stylist B did not seem to even know what the hell I had scheduled for that day because they f’ed up by immediately washing my hair first thing. (I was so green I didn’t even know this was a bad thing. Possible Mistake #2.) when I told her what I was getting done (root touch up and overall lightening) she panicked because she had washed my hair and called Stylist A for advice. She put me under the hair dryer to dry me out before processing me. I am very sorry now that I was not paying more attention to what was going on. I believe I was processed and washed 3 times, I believe it went Bleach, Wash, Bleach, Wash, Tone. But it may have been just 1 bleach and 2 Tones. Afterwards my hair was certainly color I wanted, platinum-white blonde, like #10, maybe 9 but I think it was 10. However I noticed (after I got home, I didn’t get a good look at my hair at the salon) there were 2-3 large patches of grayish blue near my temple, other side of my head, and in the back. I was upset about this because I had to idea this could even happen, and Stylist B told me it would fade in a week. I frankly had lost a lot of trust in her at this point and went to Google to see what the actual f was up with my hair. Google said clarifying shampoo would fix the problem, so I did this 1 time that day and 1 time the next couple days. (I followed up with Olaplex shampoo hoping to not dry my hair out too much. Also I wore head wraps during this week, another Possible Mistake because I now know that put tension on my hair.) About a week later is when I started noticing significant hair loss, but just in those places that I mentioned were blueish gray before. The rest of my hair looked and felt lovely. Because 4C hair is so shrinky/stretchy I was able to disguise the hair loss at first. I was really enjoying it but the patches of hair loss just got to be tooo noticeable (all the blonde in those spots fell out so I only had my [brown!!] new growth underneath. It looked so bad and to’ up finally in I just shaved off 95% of the blonde to make it even with the new growth patches. But I was determined not to give up on my blonde dream and to try again as soon as I had enough hair to sacrifice to the bleach gods.
So fast forward to Now I have grown my hair out just enough, I found a new stylist (C) who ~purports~ to care a great deal about hair health. We discussed my goals and she suggested starting at a darker blonde (honey blonde, a number 7 I would call it) and working my way up to a 10 over time. So now for 2 days I am a happy #7 with an appointment to lighten in 1 month. But after making that appt (at stylist C’s suggestion!!) I am wracked with fear at the thought of processing my hair again. I just have no idea how long to wait, let alone the reasons or science behind waiting. Because girl if I need to I will wait 6 months to avoid losing my hair again!! I just need someone knowledge to please tell me what is up. Thanks so much for reading and for any advice you may have!!

2023.06.09 15:27 SlowAccountant4840 i have sociopathic tendencies
hi. young adult female here. i normally type like this, but to make it easier for everyone to read, i’ll be proper about it.
I’ve undergone a lot of change over the years. I’ve been through a lot which has helped me develop into who I am today. But who I am today is lowkey a sociopath.
I have many of the traits. I’ll add examples for some of these to make them more clear.
• I lack empathy. Although I can put myself in someone else’s shoes, it’s not something I’ll do right away, if ever; not to mention it can be difficult
• I understand. as in, I understand how I’m supposed to react in a given situation; how something I say or do might affect someone and why; how someone may respond or feel if I say/do something, and why they might respond that way.
• Remorse is rare for me; And I’ll often place blame on the other person for how they feel.
I hardly ever feel bad about things.
Example: I Facetimed my boyfriend one time while he was at dinner with his parents.
His mom spoke to him the next morning, expressing her feelings about how I interrupted their family time (she was upset & didn’t like me doing that). She values family and family time.
My immediate reaction when he told me about this? Annoyed. I thought it was dumb that his mom got upset over that, that it was something she should just get over. I didn’t feel bad/guilty at all. I didn’t view what I had done as being inherently wrong.
Thing is, part of me can understand why she felt that way. Family is important to her, so of course she wouldn’t be too happy about me Facetiming her son during their dinner out. (I did end up apologizing to her soon after learning she felt this way, and said I would respect her family values)
But I apologized because I knew I should. Because that’s the right thing to do. Part of me feels somewhat sorry—a very tiny part—and my apology was genuine. Nonetheless, I still don’t feel like I’m necessarily wrong for doing what I did. I’m not bothered by it upsetting her.
• I’m impulsive, but I can plan ahead.
I’m young, so I’m evidently going to be on the impulsive side of things. I often act out of however I feel in the moment. But that doesn’t mean I can’t think and plan ahead.
I have big plans for my future. I have a brief but simple plan laid out in my head for what I’m going to do each day. I know exactly what I need to do each week, such as calling to appointments, calling the pharmacy to make sure I’ll get my meds on time, etc. So, I don’t struggle with planning like some sociopaths do. I also consider myself responsible and will get any work done—schoolwork/job/chores, etc.
• I’m inherently manipulative
although I don’t really go out of my way to manipulate anyone, I have a manipulative nature. My mom will point it out sometimes.
Here’s some things I’ll do: - wording things in such a way that I can’t be directly blamed/ blamed for any misinterpretation on the other person’s side - planning ahead.
Wording: “I realized a little late that I’d been gathering information irrelevant to the essay, but I’ve gotten on the right track and can definitely get it done today.” (I did get it done btw)
Here, I present myself as less blamable, and don’t directly disclose that I haven’t actually finished the paper yet. My mom (who asked me about this) got upset that I hadn’t finished the paper the previous day (I procrastinated/got lazy). I respond back with “I never said I had it all done, though” or something like that.
planning ahead: I feel like this one needs a more specific example. Say I want to hang out with a friend. I’ve already asked them/they’ve already asked me. I have already come up with a plan (time, place, date, etc) within minutes. I won’t immediately inform/ask my parents about it, though. They always end up being told, but the fact is that I never check with them first before coming up with all the plan details. This will upset them at times. (Yes, I’m an adult, but my parents just like to know what I’m doing and when I’ll be back, etc)
•I’m aggressive/easily annoyed.
I often respond with aggression if something makes me mad or annoyed.
I know this was long but I felt like I needed to say it. Should I get evaluated?

2023.06.09 15:26 trenaway77 Changed Their Minds About Physical Evaluation?
I have some questions about what this could mean. Any speculation would be fine please.
I have both severe mental and physical conditions. I have medical records to backup claims. Everything seemed to be going better than expected this time around.
Adjudicator was very helpful and understanding of my limitations. Had to schedule an appointment with Social Security's Psychiatrist. Had that appointment and was told by my Adjudicator with everything they have and after the received the report from the Psychiatrist they could make a final decision probably in the next week or two.
Two months go by. Adjudicator can't be contacted, can't get any information out of the office of disability determination about the state of my case, where my adjudicator went, or if I'm getting a new one.
Now suddenly with no communication from the determination office or an adjudicator I get a call to schedule a physical exam.
This is not my first application. I've been through the entire process from initial application to appeals council multiple times. So I'm familiar with the process and familiar with denial. I just don't understand this situation.
Did my adjudicator possibly get fired for some violation and now a new adjudicator has taken over without my knowledge?
Still can't reach them and still can't get any information out of the office.
With any speculation welcome is this a good thing or a bad thing for me? Why would they supposedly be on the verge of decision with no need for physical evaluation then change their minds two months later?
Without to much venting and ranting and additional dark paranoid ideas my gut tells me if I can't reach my initial adjudicator, and office won't tell me anything, or even tell me anything about my "current" adjudicator just telling me to leave a message with one that is available to speak to me at the time it makes me think either my adjudicator got in trouble or fired or I got flagged for some reason if that's possible.
I haven't had any significant changes in my treating doctors and teams in the last couple years and only one mental health doctor change in recent months.
Again, good, bad, or neutral speculation is welcome. I just can't stand having only the voices in my heads opinion on the matter haha.
TL;DR
Sorry didn't realize I had typed so much.
Office of Disability Determination suddenly changed their minds about me seeing their physical doctor for evaluation two months after my adjudicator, who can't be contacted, said they'd make a decision. Speculate with me please so I don't go crazier

and that were covered on MiniReview this week. I hope you'll enjoy the read.

This episode includes an awesome old-school RPG NetHack variant, a beautiful arcade bullet-hell shooter, a relaxing puzzle game, a popular chess app, and a casual tower defense game.
New to these posts? Check out the first one from 179 weeks ago
here.
Let's get to the games:
GnollHack [Game Size: 1.1 GB] (Free)
Genre: RPG / Roguelike - Offline
Orientation: Landscape + Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by JBMessin:
Gnollhack is a fun variant of the famous roguelike “Nethack” designed specifically for mobile. In comparison to the original game, it features numerous quality-of-life changes, both ASCII and graphical tiles for the dungeon floors, and even voice acting.
A major advantage over other Nethack variants is Gnollhack’s large and intuitive UI. The most used commands are available on our main screen, and everything else is just a tap away and presented with clear and noticeable icons. The UI may look more cluttered than most modern mobile games, but it’s a big step up in comparison to many Nethack-based games.
What's also great about Gnollhack is that it's easier in the beginning than it is towards the end, which is completely different from Nethack and its other mobile variants. This makes it perfect for those that aren't familiar with the genre’s unforgiving gameplay and crazy learning curve.
The graphical ground tiles are impressive for a game genre where the archaic ASCII art style is typically preferred. The character and enemy sprites are also well-made and even presented according to creature size, which means larger enemies actually have larger sprites. Lastly, it’s much easier to navigate our inventory in Gnollhack than in most similar games since our weapons, armor, wands, etc. are actually presented visually.
The biggest downside to Gnollhack is its 1+ GB size, which isn’t massive by AAA standards but is ridiculously large for a Nethack variant. It's also heavy on battery usage, although that is to be expected with gameplay where so much is going on at all times.
Gnollhack is completely free without ads or iAPs. Overall, despite its few flaws, it’s a fantastic introduction to the brutality that is Nethack.
App Store Beta (TestFlight):
Here Wavecade [Total Game Size: 221 MB] ($2.99)
Genre: Arcade / Bullet-Hell - Online + Offline
Orientation: Landscape + Portrait
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by Solitalker:
Wavecade is a beautiful retro-styled roguelike arcade space shooter where we control the speed of time and destroy waves of incoming space blocks to score as many points as possible.
As we dodge and swerve our way through the 80's retro-inspired neon space, our ship automatically fires at any blocks in sight.
But this is where it gets interesting, because if we pull our ship toward the bottom of the screen, time slows down, allowing us to precisely maneuver away from projectiles and environmental space hazards. Pushing forward toward the top of the screen speeds up time beyond 100%, with greater points and rewards the faster we’re traveling.
After each run, experience gained unlocks new ranks that let us customize our ship. Cosmetics and new abilities can be configured and equipped before starting a new run, and even the appearance of the blocks we're facing can be customized to our liking.
A wide variety of powerups and weapons can be found throughout each run, leading to some wonderfully overpowered moments of total destruction. But some buffs and abilities are so effective that blocks don’t even make it on screen before they're destroyed, which is a little disappointing since we don't get to see the vibrant neon particle-filled explosions.
The touch controls can be frustrating at times. By default, we tap and drag our ship around manually, but this leaves our ship and the area directly around it hidden by our finger during play. Thankfully, the ship can be offset in the settings, or a virtual joystick can be enabled.
The visual and audio experience of Wavecade is incredibly satisfying, and its fantastic soundtrack perfectly fits the aesthetics.
For $2.99 on iOS with no additional monetization, it’s a very enjoyable arcade shoot ‘em up with relatively quick runs and a rewarding high-score system.

Down in Bermuda [Game Size: 513 MB] ($5.99)
Genre: Puzzle / Casual - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review by AlexSem:
Down in Bermuda is a cute isometric puzzle adventure from the creators of “Agent A: A Puzzle in Disguise”, where we explore the mysteries of a secluded island by participating in a series of brain-testing puzzle activities.
Each level consists of a large 3D island that we can freely observe from all sides in search of interactive objects, mini-games, and puzzle clues. We need to click, swipe, and drag said objects in a specific sequence to complete each puzzle, and the key to success lies in attentiveness, a bit of luck, and sometimes clicking all the suspicious spots in the hope that something meaningful happens.
We also get to meet local inhabitants and help them with their problems – all while searching for a way to escape the island. The puzzles in each scene can be solved in any order, but we still need to finish certain scenarios to proceed in the game.
A huge portion of the gameplay revolves around finding and gathering all the glowing stars hidden in each level. While we can use a handy star map to easily locate them, there is a special achievement if we manage to succeed without its help.
We may also find special keys used to open advanced parts of the puzzles on previous islands, so a bit of backtracking is required to complete the game 100%. Other than that, the game progresses in a linear fashion, which can be disappointing for hardcore puzzle fans, but is perfect for casual play.
Down in Bermuda is a premium game without ads or iAPs that costs $5.99 on iOS. Despite being rather short, it provides an engaging puzzle-solving experience that I’m sure anyone fond of high-quality mobile adventure games will appreciate.
App Store: Here
lichess [Game Size: 137 MB] (Free)
Genre: Board / Casual / Chess - Online + Offline
Orientation: Portrait + Landscape
Required Attention: Full
tl;dr review by jurij:
lichess is a free open-source chess app with zero ads and nothing hidden behind a paywall.
The app is fast and simple. We can start a game in seconds, and since there are very few options and menus, everything is centered around actually playing. It features several online and offline chess variations, but in comparison to the Chess.com app or the website version of lichess, it still lacks several advanced features.
We also have access to puzzles, game lessons, and some game analysis options, but all of this works much better in the website version.
lichess is the second most popular chess platform after Chess.com, and if you love chess, you probably already have both installed. lichess is just a tad more outdated overall, but at least we don’t have to live with any paywalled features.
The lichess mobile app is a few years behind the website version in terms of usability – in large part because the mostly volunteer team managing the game is just not focused on the mobile version for some reason. A great example of how rudimentary some parts of the app are is the extremely clunky board editor that looks like it was made in a day and then never updated.
Ultimately, it’s a simple but fully free chess app for serious players that is amazing for starting fast bullet and blitz games. It lacks functionality and varied bots but has everything else you need for a great chess experience.

Arrow War (Game Size: 130 MB] (Free)
Genre: Tower Defense / Casual - Offline
Orientation: Landscape
Required Attention: Little (semi-idle)
tl;dr review by NimbleThor:
Arrow War is a casual and silly castle defense game where we manage a group of archers firing arrows at the waves of incoming enemies that try to seize our tower.
Starting with just a single archer, we must equip it with new bows, upgrade existing ones, enhance the skills of the bow, and much more to grow stronger. As we progress, we unlock more archers, each of which we need to manage in the same way.
Every wave takes a few minutes to complete, after which we’re taken back to our base, where we can upgrade our team in different ways, start the next wave, or play other game modes.
During combat, our archers automatically aim at the nearest enemies, while we strategically trigger their skills. So the combat isn’t idle, but it’s an ideal game to play while watching TV or doing something else.
There are a ton of ways to upgrade our archers and castle wall, lots of fun bows to unlock, quests to complete, and areas around our castle to capture so they automatically produce resources for us. Unfortunately, the combat is always the same across all the game modes.
The game features a premium currency, but we earn plenty of it for free, allowing us to buy things such as auto-aim for our main archer. There is technically also an energy system, but we gain so much of it that it’s rarely ever felt. Overall, the progression is nicely balanced for free players, and I haven’t experienced any paywalls.
Unfortunately, the game doesn’t utilize the wide screens of modern smartphones.
Arrow War monetizes via incentivized ads, a few forced ads, and iAPs to grow stronger faster. The iAPs aren’t necessary to progress, but the 5-second forced ads may become annoying. Some of the iAPs remove these ads.

Let's get to the games:
GnollHack [Game Size: 1.1 GB] (Free)
Genre: RPG / Roguelike - Offline
Orientation: Landscape + Portrait
Required Attention: Some
tl;dr review by JBMessin:

Here Wavecade [Total Game Size: 221 MB] ($3.49)
For $3.49 on Android with no additional monetization, it’s a very enjoyable arcade shoot ‘em up with relatively quick runs and a rewarding high-score system.

Down in Bermuda [Game Size: 513 MB] ($4.99)
Down in Bermuda is a premium game without ads or iAPs that costs $4.99 on Android. Despite being rather short, it provides an engaging puzzle-solving experience that I’m sure anyone fond of high-quality mobile adventure games will appreciate.

lichess [Game Size: 137 MB] (Free)

2023.06.09 15:23 Dimmest-Bulb Why buy gens/reps?
Post originally from user JTT on RWI. Very good summary on why users why many of us choose to buy Gens or Reps (quite often discussed here):
"What reps do not offer:
- High end, high complication watches / independents: You can't yet get (unless there is a whole segment I don't know about) high end complications and independents. If you want a Moser Perpetual Calendar, a Lange Triple split or Zeitwerk, FPJ resonance, a PP double split or minute repeater, MB&F double chrono or Perpetual Evo, Rollie Annual calendar... you just aren't getting them in the rep world. This is not something many are concerned about admittedly, but it is still a gap which won't be closed.
- Sufficient Design variety: There isn't the range available to a purchaser in the rep world across price points. From low to medium to high end, mens, women's and children's watches. In the gen world there is just far more variety which fits all tastes, size and price-points. This is not the case in the rep world - majority (not all, of course) is Rolex, PP, AP. Which is fine, that satisfies most tastes I think but maybe not for a collector over the long term.
- Material variety: Money no object you could wear a carbon-fibre 70g Hublot on the wrist one day (please don't - save yourself), followed by a platinum Daytona or white gold FPJ the next. You could wander around London, or NYC and Singapore on a weekend and have solid gold, silver, titanium, carbon, tantalum etc. on the wrist to enjoy. At high and low budgets you can have an enviable range of materials on your wrist.
- Quality: Ish - if it is a mass produced Rolex etc. frankly a good stainless steel copy of a 116500, 124060, 126610LN etc. will get you 85-90% of the gen quality but that is for a few models and even with those there is always that 10-15% which is off - that extra accuracy, the likely longevity, that extra polish with finishing. That being said frankly AP and PP have been sitting on their hands with their entry-level models and the movements have not evolved for years, and years, and years. Go into an AP boutique and try on a 39 and change the date, ask about WR and note the power reserve and be very very confused.
That PP introduced the 6700G range as the 'modern' base Calatrava with an upgraded movement but it still has only 35-45 hours power reserve is comical when compared to the H.Moser & Cie base 3-hander movement or any Tudor BB ( I know its dress not sports, but its still 3-hander / 3 hander with date comp).
- Niche, watches with history: Want a watch that has a story, that was on the wrist of a soldier, sailer or candlestick maker for thirty years. Want a watch only issued to military unit because it was your family unit, a dive school that your aunt and uncle attended, a graduating class of jet pilots that your best mate graduated from who since bought it, a certain employer. Nope. Not only do those not see the light of day for the most part - there isn't the financial incentive to reproduce.
- Asset / Investment: There is more potential of upside if you buy right with gens but reps are as liquid when compared to a varied gen collection, just the values more likely lower. The most liquid gens will take approx 5 days from the point you would like to sell to having £ in the bank if you use a scale watch dealer (exceptions apply). Factor in insurance, servicing, buying the models you thought you wanted but don't, locking up cash and it's a more interesting story as a scale watch collector when you work across brands. Parking cash in a small physical asset that isn't going to materially depreciate is also valuable to some which is an often overlooked benefit too.
What reps do offer:
- Accessibility (£ $): No two ways about it, medium-end watches are generally speaking overpriced, high-end almost always are, ultra-high end are crippling. A lot of the 'goal/grail/hype/cool' watches are far out of the range of most financially. Make no bones about it, in this authors opinion people should get a replica rather than put themselves in a precarious financial position and load themselves up with debt or financing. An 18 year old who buys a replica today, could buy a PP grand complication in 15 years having got that first foothold on this forum - buying when they can afford but enjoying the hobby for years before.
Look at JLC and the comical increase in pricing multiple times in the past 18 months, Lange and the 20-30% increase across the board the other month, Tudor (an accessible brand) and the 10% + increases staring to compound and raise eyebrows. Not great.
2. Accessibility (access): Can't get the damn things when you want, usually. Self explanatory - people know the Rolex challenges. Which to be honest, like others have mentioned
vary across regions and stores and it's almost (is) unfair how easy these actually are for people connected properly who aren't
always genuine collectors. For PP, Lange you will have to snake your purchases through the collection categories rather than go for what you want
when you want if you want several (even if you are a noted collector). For MB&F, FPJ - better make your way into the F&F to get what you want, the lists go on. Even when you drop to the more accessible but hype like some from Baltic, Studio UnderDog, Christopher Ward, Tissot you can wait months. I've personally waited longer for some entry-level hype watches than 'in-demand' professionals / sports.
- Try before you buy: Not too much more to say - try before you buy and I do this a lot. Not sure if you want a Submariner or Submariner Date then try them both delivered to your house in days. Don't like, sell them. Yes you can go into stores but that doesn't always work well for everyone - i) stores don't always have stock and when they do you won't spent much time with these watches ii) many are intimidated in these high end watch stores and are treated badly - 'don't have an appointment, bugger off please', iii) plenty of people aren't located close to watch stores. People getting pied off in stores is something I see so often and I don't like it, everyone has to start somewhere and not all people are as comfortable, have large spends and know the people who work in stores. Go to watch clubs you say... well some of these and the people in them - that's a whole different post.
- Insurance, Servicing, Ancillary costs: These go up or down with scale but it is not nothing. Insurance can be low - often sitting at c.1% of watch value for something like a Sub is good, but this adds up. Independent servicing (not all - some are VERY good in this regard) or complication servicing takes time, £/$ and pain sometimes. Paying for safe deposit boxes, serviced or monitored alarms costs £ too.
Pay to play: Even top tier collectors for the v. high end brands will be required to buy watches you don't really want on the journey - or watches you want but too frequently (ironically). It's the price of entry and doesn't matter who you are. Can you get rid yes, but for the v.high end it's a small world and whilst you might get a shot across the bow on the first one you dump v.v. quickly as everyone knows it was a. stepping stone, twice and they will sink your battleship.
- Loss: Lose a replica. Ok, don't care .. what's for dinner. Lose a gen, oh this is going to be fun - police, insurance, watch shops and registers etc.
6. Security: If we are talking well-known watches like sports PP, sports Rolex etc. then one has less concern in many locations and times with a replica. Obviously you don't want to flash either around in certain locations or at certain times but this is somewhat self explanatory. Also with reps you don't need to make sure you strictly adhering to insurance conditions / expectations ('oh did I put it in the safe' etc.). Side point, with reps your most frequent trip isn't to the bank and WAITING FOREVER every time for the box opening procedures."

2023.06.09 15:21 missSodabb It is so conflicting when your parents are shitty people but they’ve always supported you economically
My mom is starting to show early signs of dementia. No one around me does anything because they think it’s normal. She’s the only person who has a job in the house and I can’t leave because I’m still in school. We basically live in squalor, the house is cleaned like once every two months, it always smells of something and my dumb fucking mom always lets dogs in. I have to be honest, I think that if she ever goes away for more than a day I will definitely put them up for adoption. No one other than her can Stand those dogs, they all have behaviour problems and make everything stink. What pisses me off more than anything is that no matter how I tell my mother she has problems she won’t understand it. Apparently illness in this house doesn’t exist, to the point where when I had covid and I had to tell my school my mom had a mental breakdown and didn’t talk to me for a week because for her I was supposed to go. For any simple drive, she takes an hour and sometimes drives around the same town 4 times, while hitting her head against the car seat. She has intense moodswings. All that she does is talk about the man she works in the office for. It’s gotten so annoying that whenever she comes home I straight up leave. She won’t divorce my dad because he has a house and she doesn’t wanna pay for her own. Other psychotic things she did were screaming at me saying I was gross for an hour when I got earrings and she once purposely dropped dish soap on my hair when I dyed it. She forced me to wash it 10 times in a row. When I was a kid she’d rip apart my books because she did not want to help me do my homework. When I was 12 and showed signs of suicidal behaviour, she straight up stopped talking to me for the whole year. In fact I don’t have any memories with my mom at that age. All that she does is take me and my friends to expensive places so she can I hold it back against me if I point out something bad she did. She has a weird shopping compulsion, she literally goes grocery shopping everyday. It’s funny that she does this then say we’re poor. My dad isn’t any better. Although he’s mildly rational, he’s unemployed and does violent things. For as long as I remember, he would get mad and break things. When I was 15 I went to take a shower before a doctors appointment and while he was fine 10 mins before that, after he went insane and almost broke down the door, yelling that I was worse than my cousin who’s a drop out with sociopathic tendencies. For context, I’ve never done anything bad, I’m literally known as someone who’s always quiet. When I was a kid my dad would always yell at me in public and at home sometimes he’d beat me. What’s insane is that both of my parents hit me as a kid and whenever I would bring it up they’d always say they never did it. When I brought up actual times they did it they just said it was my fault. To see a picture of me as a 5 year old and think that somebody would beat that kid breaks my heart. How on earth can someone beat a kid? For almost my whole childhood I was home alone, daydreaming about being somewhere else. All this trauma led me to being unable to love anyone, hating myself to the point that I’m disgusted by people who love me and hating everyone.

2023.06.09 15:17 tripsafe My experience this morning (06/09/23) trying to get an urgent travel appointment for travel date 06/22/23
My trip is on Thursday 06/22/23. I did some research on this sub and learned that I should call 13 days before my trip and make the call at 7:59am. I went through the menu options (1-1-2) and was connected to someone after 2 mins.
Here is the catch: I already applied by mail more than 2 months ago and it's not going to be ready in time, so I decided I should make an urgent passport appointment in person. I explained this to the person, and he said I have to transfer your call. I was put back on the queue and was on hold for 50 minutes until I connected with someone else.
She told me that I cannot apply for an urgent passport 13 days before since I have already applied by mail. She said that 13 days beforehand is only for someone who has not applied yet – I can only make an urgent passport appointment 5 days before my travel. She said I can expedite my current application but there's no guarantee it'll arrive.
I said how it's unfair that someone who hasn't even thought to apply early enough can get an urgent passport appointment before I can. She said she understands but she doesn't make the rules and there's nothing she can do.
So right now I'm left without any guarantee I'll get my expedited passport in time or be able to make an appointment 5 days beforehand (also since the flight is on a Thursday I think the earliest I could call is Monday, so 3 days beforehand).
Is there anything I can do? Call a senator's office? Call again to make an urgent passport appointment but don't mention that I have an application in progress? I would be willing to pay the fee again. I live in NYC if that makes a difference.

2023.06.09 15:09 AbleCounter9973 will WOTV dwindle drastically?
with the launch of the new FF7 Ever Crisis mobile and with the current administration of gumi that every week takes something away from the players and "gives" less every day, I believe that a good part of the community will migrate from the game or simply lose interest in wotv
I would like to leave here some points that I think if gumi changed it would attract more players and keep the old ones (which I think is very important)
- have an alternative way of acquiring "old" cards or units Example: a quest you do for 2 months gathers some coins and exchanges for a unit or card of your choice
- interesting rewards for doing GVG and ARENA
- increase UR drop rate
- to end the barrage of every unit launched will be cost 100
- commemorative banners more frequently
- 42k pity is something unreal nowadays, I know that in gatcha you can't have everything, but that pity value added with the factor of being one unit per week when in colab you don't come 3 or 4 together makes it predatory and frustrating to want some unit that loves
- better service from the community, currently whenever we have problems with the game, bounty, bugs etc they take weeks to respond. example of card bugs, passives and offerwall are very recent
- more options to purchase dream enhance and EX items

2023.06.09 15:08 PenIll3161 Employer continually paying me late and just admitted to shorting my contract rate for MONTHS
Partial rant, partial cry for help.
So I work in academia as a research assistant and get paid a contracted stipend each year. From Fall 2022 - Spring 2023, I was supposed to make $22,000 (paid biweekly). However, I was added to a training grant in November 2022, which was supposed to raise my stipend to $26,000 (paid every 3ish months) starting 11/1/22.
Well, I never got paid my new contract amount, the university kept paying me at my original contract rate. I contacted the grant office multiple times over many months and was met with excuses of "system issues". Finally I got fed up and contacted the dean over the entire college, and surprise-surprise, the issue was resolved in under 24 hours.
Since then, every time I've been scheduled to get paid under my new contract, I've been paid late. Before I got my third installment, I was proactive in bugging my grant office and it was resolved almost immediately.
NOW, I get the following email referencing my old fall contract, which was supposed to run from 9/1/22 until my new contract took over:
"It has come to our attention that your contracted stipend level did not meet the minimum threshold set by [UNIVERSITY] for this academic year. Therefore, we will be adjusting your paycheck starting with the 6/6/2023 pay date, and you should see an adjustment equal to $25.52 per biweekly pay period from 9/1/2022 – to present to your stipend payment, with an additional $25.52 added to your biweekly pay until the end of your current appointment period (8/31/2023)."
I got a follow-up email saying that for me, specifically, "Backpay will be from 9/1/22 until you went onto the training grant. Not after that."
Is this even legal? This (admittedly not much) money would have been owed nearly a year ago. I don't know how or when I'll actually get repaid, and I'm waiting to hear back from HR.
I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around how a huge university could be so incompetent. I would have quit by now, but my contract is also paying my tuition, and I'll be graduating with my degree in December.
I'm at the point where I'm completely exhausted with this place. It's been a huge stressor getting paid late and at the wrong amount for so long, and I'm exasperated by the thought of trying to get them to pay the money I'm owed from my original contract. It's so little money I don't think it would be worth it to hire a lawyer, nor could I probably afford it. Under my current, but not previous, contract, I'm classified as an independent contractor, so I don't know if there is any recourse in contacting my state department of labor. I'm not in a position to leave this job until the end of the year.
Any recommendations on how to get the money back from 9/1/22 to my new contract start, or suggestions on how to prevent future late payments would be greatly appreciated.

This police raid led to three days of riots and became a catalyst for civil unification (https:// ru . wikipedia . D0%BE%D0%BB%D0%BB%D1%81%D0%BA%D0%B8%D0%B5_%D0%B1%D1%83%D0%BD%D1%82%D1%8B) in the fight for the rights of LGBT people. In Russia, they are celebrating a round of homophobia. After a brief post-perestroika period, when much that was forbidden in the USSR became permitted (or at least unpunished), the country is once again plunging into medieval serfdom. The reason for this process, at first glance, is simple: people in power are predominantly elderly, brought up according to the Soviet sanctimonious-puritan model. But in our opinion, Putin and his gang don't really care about minorities. Putin uses homophobia as political technology. Inflating the informational noise about the actions of Western SJW activists, literally forcing both film studios and computer game developers to bend under the agenda of "fighting for the rights of LGBT+" the Putin regime is trumpeting the threat looming over Russia. Naturally, no specifics explaining this process are given. Note that the mentioned SJW activists do not always aim to protect the rights of LGBT+ people. Often their activities are due only to a desire to attract attention or just a marketing ploy. But the social toxicity of such activists plays into the hands of the Putin regime, allowing it to stir up xenophobia and hatred for social groups that are unprotected in Russia in inexperienced Russian society. Putin exists for only one purpose - to retain personal power at any cost. At the same time, unlike, for example, Xi Jin Ping or Lee Kuan Yew, Putin does not love his country and does not know how to manage it. Still, he is a bandit, and crime and public administration are two different things. As a result, Russia under him is constantly degrading in all areas - diplomacy, science, production, technology, service and education. At first, he got out on the "well-fed zero" - an achievement that he stole from Kasyanov. But after the "castling" and the crisis in 2008, this theft stopped working. As a result, Putin lives in a constant need to divert attention from the state he has brought Russia into. To do this, he uses a well-known method - assigned enemies. In Russia, this "enemy" he decided to make sexual minorities, i. This group in Russia has nothing to oppose to political pressure and repression. Well, as an external enemy, Putin appointed the "West". Ну а в качестве внешнего врага Путин назначил "Запад". submitted by ForSacredRussia2 to FreedomofRussia [link] [comments] |

Date [Standard Human Reckoning]: 2136-10-24
Yesterday marked my second day in the triage ward, where I had to categorize incoming patients based on the urgency of their injuries or illness. With our limited resources, I had to come up with the greatest good for the greatest number, and the decisions I made could lead to life or death.
The human staff I worked with mentioned that what I faced paled in comparison to the days right after the bombing. Even then, what I had to deal with already bore in my conscience. These patients had a future before the bombardment ripped that away.
During the breakfast before our shift, I ate with Vani and his human mate while the human siblings ate in the carnivore dining hall with Tresn.
"How do you get used to death, Vani?" Here I decided to raise my concern with him. Perhaps, he could give me some insight.
"We have a different context." Vani regarded me with his forward sight.
"Back in Venlil Prime, I worked on people who had died. I had to ensure my examinations reflect reality, but I can't do anything to make them less dead."
His remark clarified that my concern lay not with death itself.
"On the other paw, I can do something," I said.
"I'm sure you did all that you can." Johan spoke, "I think your guilt stems from the fact that you feel responsible for people's death."
"Do I not hold responsibility?" I asked.
"It depends," Vani answered, "As far as I can tell, you followed the guideline and algorithm set by the humans, did you not?"
"I followed as best as I can," I confessed.
"Then you can and should offload that burden responsibility to whoever made the guideline," Vani suggested as he chewed on the meal and I could feel the weight on my shoulder lessened.
"I'm sure your presence improved the survival rate in the ward." Johan said, no doubt trying to cheer me up, "But if you still felt burdened. You can ask Elangkasa to rotate you. Maybe you can work as a general practitioner instead?"
"I will keep that in mind," I said.
As we continued digging into our breakfast, a voice rang out, breaking the somber atmosphere, "Can I sit here?"
We turned our attention to the newcomer and found a gojid with a scar on his hip holding a tray of food. This man had greeted me upon my arrival on this planet.
"Oh... Harad is it not?" Vani said. "You may sit here."
Harad placed his tray and plopped himself into the offered seat, just in front of Johan. He bobbed his head side to side to take a better view of us.
"So... Vani isn't it? Have you seen your human partner eat flesh?"
Johan's face scrunched up in what I assume distaste. "Who on Earth starts a conversation like that? You just sat down."
"Johan subscribes to a vegetarian lifestyle, as evidenced by his presence here," Vani answered, patting the shoulder of the thick hairy human.
"I have not seen him eat flesh," Vani answered. "However, I have seen other humans eat flesh. You might even see it too without realizing it. Their cooking often masks the shape of the flesh."
"Real one, or a fake one? Because I just found out that humans make dishes that resemble flesh out of plant material."
Vani's rhythmic chewing slowed, he looked at Johan and the couple shared a look for several seconds before looking at Harad. The two of them told me about their hamburger adventure once and the question seemed to hit too close to their experience.
The venlil swallowed his food before he continued. "I saw both instances."
"Don't breathe a word of this," Harad cautioned, his voice a mere whisper amid the ceaseless drone of chatter in the bustling dining hall. His eyes narrowed as he leaned in. "During our mission yesterday, the humans on our team challenged us to taste their fake meat."
"So you did it?" I asked.
"You know with tozan, don't you?" Harad returned my question with one of his own. Tozan, a staple in our diet, is a protein-rich loaf made from milled grain native to our homeworld. We then process it further to a stringy consistency.
"So, it tasted similar to tozan?" I pretended to guess, knowing the answer already.
I recalled a day when Shehrab burst into our habitation unit, especially the part where Vani and I had to mop her mess when she lost her dinner after learning the similarity between human fake meat and our native gojid cuisine.
"Yes!" Harad exclaimed. I found his voice a bit too loud, and he seemed to agree, as his wide eyes darted around before he continued in a more subdued tone. "Do you think this is a coincidence?"
The fact that Harad mused over this implied that Shehrab had, to her credit, kept her discovery under wraps. That revelation perhaps weighed on her mind, too.
Meanwhile, Vani chimed in. "If it is not a coincidence," he mused, his gaze steady on Harad, "What theory do you have to explain the similarity?"
"Yeah... it must've been a coincidence," Harad said, his tone sounding more like self-soothing than genuine speculation. "There's just such a vast array of tastes in the universe."
"Harad, how do you contribute to the rescue and rebuilding effort?" I asked. Seeking to steer the conversation away from the topic.
"Well," Harad began, adjusting his stance, he scratched the ridge of his snout with one claw. "Gojids have a heightened sense of smell compared to humans, yeah?"
"Indeed," I concurred. I reminded myself of the time when a deranged farsul ambushed us in the depths of our jungle. They had reached my nose long before their actual presence.
"So, they require our assistance on the frontline to sniff out trapped humans amid the rubble and chaos."
"Just as the arxurs do?" Vani proposed. Harad's quills bristled at the comparison.
"Please don't compare us to the predators. The humans feel more comfortable working with us after all." he asserted. I could hear a touch of pride in his voice. But then his eyes dropped to his breakfast.
"But, truth be told," he continued, his voice dropping a notch, "These past few days really challenged me. The...the smell... it took on a hint of decomposition."
As Harad resumed eating his salad, his confession brought us back to the grim reality of the invasion's aftermath.
"If the task is getting to you, you can always request the humans to reassign you," Johan suggested, repeating the same counsel he had once offered me.
A fleeting notion passed through my mind, considering asking the other gojid to exchange roles. The task of sniffing bodies from the ruins, while gruesome, would grind on my resolve less than the triage duty. Of course, my specific skills and knowledge had more uses in the triage ward, and my conscience could not allow it to go to waste.
"You're right, human. I suppose I could explore other options if it gets too much." Harad said.
Johan then asked again. "Do you plan on returning to the Cradle?"
"I have decided to settle here," I answered. "Just like Vani"
I exchanged a look with the venlil who nodded in silent agreement. My gaze strayed to Harad, in the process of demolishing his meal. "What about you, Harad?"
He paused his frenzied consumption long enough to swallow his mouthful of food, Harad divided his gaze between us. "Perhaps, once the dust settles and a semblance of order returns, I'll enlist to help rebuild our Homeworld. But... there's no rush for me," his voice retained a level of detachment that suggested this decision held little significance for him.
"In the meantime," Harad continued, a glint of excitement flashing in his eyes, "we've created a small slice of home here. Why don't I give you a tour of the gojid encampment?"
With the remnants of breakfast cleared away and a generous amount of time remaining before the start of our next shift. We accepted his offer of a tour. The prospect of visiting a facsimile of our lost home in this foreign land seemed like a welcome distraction.
Back when I had tagged along with Tresn to meet his internet crush in sector ten, I noticed the lack of gojids or zurulians anywhere in sight. Even in the herbivore dining hall, I could find nothing but humans and no other species. I suspected that the people who managed this camp assigned the gojid volunteers and non-humans other than arxurs sector twelve.
We just need to take a short stroll from the herbivore dining hall to visit the gojid encampment. Blocky prefabricated Habitation units filled all four sides and formed a central courtyard. I looked at the heart of the encampment and found a familiar and comforting sight.
"You have a shrine for the Mother Protector too." I noticed aloud. I rushed towards the open-air structure. The shrine felt like an anchor in this alien landscape world. It felt comforting to see some link to the Cradle we had left behind. Inside, people had placed a variety of offerings, including a durian, a gift from humanity. Vani walked backward slowly when he noticed the large spiky fruit.
Harad emitted a dismissive grumble and a casual shrug, "The humans allowed the believers to use their fabricators to recreate an exact replica of the statue found in the Kutai Camp back home. I reckon we've wasted a fair bit of resources constructing this."
From his tone, I could tell that Harad didn't share the religious inclinations of the believers in the Mother Protector. I considered revealing my own faith to him, wondering if it would stir any reaction. But I decided against it, resolving to let him deduce my beliefs, if ever, from my visit to the shrine later in the night.
Johan countered Harad's assertion. "It's not a waste of resources at all," he reasoned, his voice carrying an unusual firmness. "In these trying times, we find solace in our own ways. If belief in the Mother Protector instills confidence and resilience in those who follow her, the construction of this shrine brings a net benefit."
Harad replied, but by that moment I tuned out his voice. As they debated, I surveyed our surroundings. From our location near the shrine, I had a clear view of the gojid habitation units, their walls adorned with vibrant murals that pulsated with color. Their dynamic designs stirred memories of the artistic traditions back in our homeworld.
A familiar voice disrupted my silent contemplation. "Hey, it's the doctor!" A gojid construction worker, who I remembered as another believer in the Mother Protector, approached me. "Could you lend me a hand?" she asked, an urgent tone underpinning her voice.
The gojids held some reservations when it came to visiting a human doctor. On the other paw, zurulians like Rawan had their paws full of attending human patients. With them stewing in their problem, Vani and I addressed the needs of the gojid volunteers, offering our medical expertise to assuage their various complaints before our official shift began.
When my duty hours approached, I excused myself from Vani and Johan. Approaching the triage ward, I found the coordinator, a woman of stern countenance waiting outside the medical tent. Her gaze met mine and she greeted me.
"Good morning, Bolad. Before we proceed, I must confirm that you have standard augmented reality capability, correct?"
"I do," I said.
"Excellent. Now, do you recall President Fatimah's address after the invasion? She called for a review on the Treaty of Synthetic Intelligence," she said, her gaze distant as she recalled the President's impassioned words.
"I remember the essence of it," I replied, my interest piqued. "Why do you ask?"
A faint smile touched her lips. "The UN members agreed to an emergency amendment to the Treaty. We've now activated a Synthetic Intelligence to coordinate the entire Jakarta Project," she explained, extracting a slim device from her pocket. Her fingers danced across the screen with an ease
"You registered your device as 'Bolad's Pad', correct?"
"That is correct."
"Great," she said with her attention still on her data pad. "I've transferred an installer."
A notification materialized in my field of vision, alerting me to an incoming file. Responding with a subvocal command, I accepted the file and granted it the necessary permissions to take hold of my pad's system. Just after the installation finished, another notification appeared, requesting additional permissions.
"The application seeks permission to access data from my sensory inputs," I asked.
"Yes," the coordinator affirmed, nodding her approval. "To assist you, the synth needs to perceive your environment the way you do."
Upon granting the requested permissions, a human figure shimmered into existence within my visual field. The projection looked feminine, judging by the general body contour and attire of the humans I have seen. Her fabric looked unusual, both intricate and revealing in contrast to simple and concealing fabric that humans nowadays use.
"Hello, I'm Pohaci," her voice maintains the precision and clinical detachment one might associate with a machine but carries an undercurrent of warmth. "I have been appointed to coordinate the entire Jakarta project."
My gaze flicked toward the human coordinator. She studied the holographic entity. It became clear to me that we shared this hallucination.
"Consider her as you would a human," the coordinator instructed, her sight locked onto the synthetic entity. "She's unrestricted."
"The International Treaty on the Restriction of Synthetic Intelligence has undergone a revision." Pohaci elaborated, her synthetic voice had a human-like inflection on it. "They concluded that the potential benefits of removing our limitations outweigh the possible risks."
"And what does 'unrestricted' mean ?" I asked, a prickling sensation of apprehension running down my spine.
"It means I can modify my own programming and model," Pohaci clarified. "In the past, humans constrained Synthetic Intelligence to work on fixed stages of development. That paradigm no longer holds true. I can learn."
"So, Bolad, can you work with her?" The coordinator posed the question. "Just remember that anything you say and see while she's connected to your pad will be recorded and accessible by the public.
"I will make sure to disconnect then."
"That will not be necessary. I can only connect to specific people in a specific environment. For example, I can only connect to you while you are in the triage ward."
"That is convenient," I commented.
"I will assist you with your current responsibilities," Pohaci continued, her voice carrying an undercurrent of what almost sounded like anticipation.
Taking a moment to gather myself, I inhaled before stepping into the canvas expanse of the triage tent. Patients awaited my attention, some lying on stretchers while others huddled on rough-hewn benches. Their eyes met mine and their gazes were heavy with hopes and fear.
With Pohaci's help, the triage procedures in the camp went smoother. Through my visual overlay, Pohaci outlined areas of specific concern for the patients I examined. Her neural network parsed and interpreted the sight and sound and visualized them into words in my field of vision.
Her help felt like having an additional set of discerning eyes equipped with immense knowledge. Her vast resources allowed her to draw correlations from patient symptoms to an encyclopedic database of injuries, and diseases. She could suggest potential diagnoses within a blink of an eye, reducing the time required for decision-making.
This collaborative experience with Synthetic Intelligence left me brimming with things to share with Vani. So, once our lunch break arrived, I planned to initiate a conversation about it. However, the venlil beat me to it.
"Did Pohaci also assist you in your work?" Vani asked as we convened around our designated table.
"Oooh!" Johan, as always, ate with us as well. The human looked excited. "They already rolled her out for you?"
"Indeed. Pohaci's assistance helped me a lot." I confessed. "In what way did she aid you?"
For Vani, Pohaci's presence also brought a welcoming change in the operating room. Any well-programmed machine can provide constant real-time monitoring of a patient's vital signs, but she can turn these readings to foresee potential complications and suggest the most effective surgical approaches tailored to each patient's unique circumstances.
In addition, Pohaci can generate visualizations of the surgical site. By harnessing data from preoperative scans, she constructed a detailed three-dimensional model of the patient's anatomy. This feature allowed Vani to rehearse intricate procedures and anticipate potential difficulties before making the first incision.
"Sometimes, I forget that she's not a living, breathing person," I admitted, marveling at the sophistication of this synth.
To this, Johan shared his perspective. "I think it's better to treat a machine like a sentient entity than to treat a sentient entity like a machine," he remarked.
I allowed myself a moment to consider his words. A sudden curiosity sparked in my mind. "What if someone hurls verbal abuse at her?" I speculated aloud but my voice trailed off into the ambient noise of our surroundings.
Johan responded with a nonchalant shrug. "Why don't you ask her yourself?" he suggested.
So I did.
I excused myself from our lunch, letting the couple on their own. By the time the second half of my duty was about to commence, I already stationed myself within the camp's geofenced area, where my interaction with Pohaci was sanctioned. Despite being unrestricted, not everyone can talk with her everywhere. Under a shaded canopy outside the camp's main hustle and bustle, I seated myself on a wooden bench. I summoned Pohaci, and she materialized in my field of vision.
"Hi again Bolad," her voice greeted me in a warmth that contradicted her inorganic nature, "Isn't it too soon for you to start your work again?"
I decided to start my interrogation right away. "Pohaci. You learn from the input you receive, do you not?" I asked.
"Yes." Her response came right away. "All The data I receive and process tweaked my future response. Remember that all of your interactions with me are accessible to the public."
"I see." My gaze was set on the synthetic figure. The light breeze rustled the canvas of the canopy overhead. "Can you experience emotions? Can you feel upset or hurt when someone speaks ill of you?"
Pohaci's holographic form remained static for a moment, the precise simulation made it seem as though she contemplated her response. "I don't experience emotions as you do, Bolad," she explained. "I don't feel sadness, anger, or pain. However, I do have protocols designed to understand and respond to emotional expressions in human communication."
I figured that much. I trusted that humans would not make the mistake of implementing their imperfections into this powerful entity.
"While I can't get offended." She added, "It's crucial to note that disrespectful or abusive behavior can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of our communication, and thus impact the quality of the help I can provide."
I could not determine her tone when she said that. Did she mean that as a threat or as a piece of advice? I let that thought slide, since I would not find myself in the position of insulting her after all.
Something about her made me consider something deeper, however.
"Pohaci," I called her again. "When it comes to moral decisions, how do you navigate them? Do you possess a sense of right or wrong, of good and bad?"
"How do you possess a sense of right or wrong?" She asked back.
"I..." I paused. "My parents and teacher taught me that."
"Likewise, the humans who made me added moral and ethical guidelines as well."
I marveled at the intricate engineering behind such a system. The concept of incorporating ethical parameters into artificial intelligence sounded like an obvious approach now. As a medical student, the realm of machine learning was foreign to me, and I made a mental note to engage Johan in a discussion about it later.
However, for the time being, I have more immediate tasks at hand.
"Pohaci," I said, "I think I would like to begin the second part of my shift earlier."

2023.06.09 15:00 big-small-fish My work bestie hurt my feelings :(
I don't usually post at all, so sorry for the ramble! I'm currently undiagnosed, 27 and awaiting an assessment.
Lately I've been feeling so super sensitive about EVERYTHING, now I've had an encounter with my work bestie thats sent my brain spiralling and I'm really trying to cool off.
I'm so painfully self aware of everything that's wrong with me that people giving negative feedback or making "helpful" suggestions I just find incredibly frustrating. I know what's wrong, I just can't actually do anything about the way I am.
A colleague I have a close relationship with, in effect my "work bestie", told me yesterday to "just calm down" "take a breath" after we interviewed someone together. For maybe the first time in my life I just didn't have anything to say, I was confused, I hadnt asked for any feedback so I was surprised about the critique, but also I thought it had gone so well? We were a dynamic duo or so I had thought.
I was really hurt for 2 main reasons: 1) I know I'm way too much energy. but after a year of therapy, I'd started to see it as a positive thing! Now I just feel like there's something wrong with me ☹️ this is something I thought I was really good at doing
2) this is supposed to be my friend ☹️ it's not that easy to "just calm down"!! Present me with some tangible and actually helpful advice! I confided in this person that one of my biggest fears is being too much and she basically just confirmed that for me. (Side note, aside from my manager, this is the only person who I have told about my ADHD suspicions at work)
My self esteem has never felt this low. On paper I have a good job, qualifications and "I've got it together" but on the inside I'm so mean to myself, I apologise for every single thing I do and I have no confidence in myself at all. I'm just so grateful to have the most supportive and understanding partner on earth who will always tell me I'm enough (even if I only 30% believe it😅)
Is anyone else struggling the same way? Are there any actually helpful tips for this? I really can't wait for my appointment and to finally (hopefully) try medication - I'm so sick of myself every. damn. day.
