2023.03.28 12:30 Ghostblade_e Potential meanings of the Legend of Icarus and Daedelus

There are a lot of tales in Greek mythology, but one is more misunderstood than the others: the legend of Icarus. Throughout time, the legend has stayed mostly the same; there are very few variants, but the meaning isn’t what people have been thinking it is.
The tale is already short, but here is a brief summary: back in ancient Crete, there was a man by the name of Daedelus and his son, Icarus. King Minos had Daedelus build him a labyrinth, but to keep the secrets of the dungeon, he kept Daedelus and Icarus in a tower, so Daedelus devised a plan.
Daedalus created wings out of wax and feathers for himself and Icarus, though he was nervous. Icarus’ age isn't known for certain, but he was young; in the tales, he’s described as a boy, as though he didn’t have the time to grow up. Icarus was young, but he decided to try and flee with Daedelus anyway, though he gave Icarus a small warning: don’t fly over the sea or too close to the sun.
When fleeing to Sicily, Daedalus decided on taking a route over the sea, and Icarus flew too high. The wax melted against the sun, and Icarus fell into the sea, thus drowning. Daedalus didn't realize what had happened until after Icarus died.
The typical interpretation of the story is that you should listen to your elders because they know better than you do since they have more experience on Earth than you do, but in reality, how could that be the meaning of the story? Daedalus never specifies what is ‘too close to the sun’ and he’s the one who was choosing the route, there are other ways to get to Sicily from Crete other than over the water. There are three other meanings that this story could have, and none of them are aimed at the child, but rather at the adult, with life experience.
The tale could be telling parents to pay better attention to their children and to show they are their children’s most important influence. Since Daedelus wasn’t paying attention to Icarus, he fell into the sea and drowned, but he wouldn’t even have had the chance to drown if Daedelus hadn’t picked the route over the sea, despite knowing that flying over it was a horrible idea.
The second way the tale could be thought of is to take your time. Daedalus knew Icarus was young, but he was impatient. He wanted to go back to his home in Sicily, but he couldn’t just walk out of the tower. He should have waited until he thought Icarus was old enough to fly responsibly. Icarus didn't get to leave the tower every day; in fact, he never did, and few people ever get to fly. He was obviously going to be irresponsible and test his limits because he was only a boy; it's normal for anyone, especially children, to do this to see how far they can go and how skilled they are at certain things, though that wasn't even the true meaning of the story.
Before the events of Icarus’ death, Perdix, Daedelus’ sister, asked her brother to teach her son, Talos, and Daedelus agreed. But over time, Talos got more intelligent and was beginning to surpass Daedelus, so Daedelus attempted to kill him, though Talos was turned into a bird called a Perdix, named after his mother, by Athena. Once he became a Perdix, Talos flew away and was never seen by Daedelus again.
The tale of Icarus’ demise happened years later, but karma knows no timeline. Icarus died from falling while using the power of the bird, flight. The same thing Perdix used to get away and be free after Daedalus tried to murder him. The tragedy that was bestowed upon Icarus was punishment against his father. Daedelus took away his sister’s son, and now he had to pay with his own son’s life when flying in the same domain that Talos was now a master of thanks to Athena.
When one person was told this, she said it was a "messed up mindset to believe that," but it also wouldn’t have been the first time that Greek mythology had a darker, more sinister side to it. Many ancient tales are twisted and horrifying if one looks into them, so it wouldn't be a stretch to say that Icarus' death was karma and justice being bestowed upon Daedelus for attempting to murder his nephew out of spite and wanting to be the best architect and inventor to exist. Athena has already intervened in the matter before, so she may have had the help of the other gods and goddesses to devise a plan that would essentially be payback for his wrongdoings upon Daedelus’ sister and her son.
Alas, all of these are only theories compiled over the years, and this Pandora’s box of mythological mysteries may never be opened; one thing is for certain, though. While the patterns of the box may be bright and vivid, they don’t always show what is truly within, and the same is with the legend of Icarus and his infamous father, Daedalus.

2023.03.28 11:51 astromattwoods Get Ready For the Ningaloo Total Solar Eclipse

Hi Guys,
In just under a month on Thursday the 20th of April, 2023, the people of Western Australia, Timor-Leste, and parts of Indonesia will be able to witness a rare astronomical event - a Total Solar Eclipse. During this event, the Moon will block out the entire disc of the Sun for 62 seconds. This is an incredibly rare occurrence and the first time that it will happen in Western Australia since the 20th of June 1974. The schedule for the eclipse in Exmouth is:
Phase Time
Partial begins 10:04:31 am
Full begins 11:29:48 am
Maximum 11:30:17 am
Full ends 11:30:46 am
Partial ends 1:02:34 pm
The Total Solar Eclipse will allow astronomers to study the Sun's Corona and Chromosphere. The Corona is the outermost layer of the Sun's atmosphere, made up of hot, ionized gas that extends far beyond the visible surface of the star. The temperature in this region can reach millions of degrees Celsius, making it one of the hottest places in space. Studying the Sun's Corona is essential for understanding how stars interact with their environment and how they evolve over time. It also provides astronomers with an excellent opportunity to study the magnetic fields and how they shape the Corona as well.
There are four types of Solar Eclipses: Total, Annular, Partial, and Hybrid. The Ningaloo 2023 Solar Eclipse is special because it is a rare "Hybrid Eclipse." A hybrid eclipse is a type of solar eclipse that looks like an annular solar eclipse or a total solar eclipse, depending on the observer's location along the central eclipse path. Observers in Exmouth will witness a Total Solar Eclipse during the 62 seconds of darkness as the Moon casts a 41km wide path over Western Australia's Northwest Cape into darkness.
Total Solar Eclipses occur somewhere on Earth about every 18 months. However, experiencing the Sun's corona appearing around the black shadow of the Moon is the highlight of a Total Solar Eclipse event. During totality, the day will become almost night so the stars and planets become visible, the air temperature drops and animals may change their behaviour. In ordinary daylight, the corona of the Sun isn't visible, but it can be seen during a Total Solar Eclipse, it looks like a white halo.
For those who are lucky enough to witness this extraordinary event, it will be an unforgettable experience. However, there are some important tips that people should keep in mind while preparing to witness this rare event. Firstly, never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye as it can cause permanent eye damage, it's worth reading the American Astronomical Society's web page on eye safety and solar eclipses. Secondly, make sure to have reputable solar eclipse glasses. The Perth Observatory ($2.50 each), and Binocentral in Joondalup are recommended for purchasing these glasses.
There is still some accommodation up in Exmouth. The Ningaloo Eclipse website and the Exmouth Solar Eclipse Facebook group page, are excellent for planning your stay up they. Additionally, Time and Date has a great page for details about the eclipse itself. They are expecting between 10,000 to 50,000 people, so it's best to come prepared with food, water, spare tyres, oil, and fuel for the car, as towns may run out of these items. Visitors should also ensure that their car is serviced before the trip and you should avoid parking on long grass when you’re up there to avoid starting fires.
It is important to note that there are many mobile blackspots up north, and visitors should bring first aid kits and an Emergency Personal Locator Beacon just in case they get into trouble. It's best to have a Telstra prepaid sim card if you normally have an Optus or Vodafone sim in your phone. SpaceX's Starlink (Superfast satellite broadband internet) is also now available for the road ( and you can use it now in the Exmouth region. It's also 50% off the hardware currently. it is recommended to space out the trip as it is a long drive to the area.
Perth Observatory will also have a team going up to Exmouth for the Eclipse to live stream the eclipse with our friends at Time and Date, but we will be leaving early to do astronomy nights along the way with Astrotourism WA.

For more info on these events and more, visit the Ningaloo Eclipse website's event page
If you can't get into Exmouth, Onslow and Carnarvon are also going to be very good places to see the eclipse and If you can't leave Perth, don't worry, you'll get a partial eclipse where the Moon will cover 70% of the Sun. If you do miss out completely, don't worry, Western Australia will get 5 Total Eclipses in the next 50 years:
If you're experiencing your first total solar eclipse, it's best to fully immerse yourself in the moment with your loved ones during totality. Consider disconnecting from technology such as mobile phones and tablets to fully appreciate the breathtaking event unfolding in the night sky. The experience is truly awe-inspiring, and it's likely to leave a lasting impression on you. After totality, you may find yourself eagerly anticipating the next opportunity to witness such a stunning celestial display. So, be present, embrace the magic of the eclipse, and let it move you.
I hope this info helps you all.

2023.03.28 10:03 Sorin61 Therapeutic Role of Green Tea on Human Body Function, Some Diseases and Weight loss: A Review [03 - 2023]

After water, tea is the most consumed nutrient on the planet. However, black tea accounts for 78% of global tea consumption, while green tea accounts for only 20%. Except for flavored tea, all types of tea are made from the dried leaves of the tea bush.
The type of tea is determined by the degree of oxidation of the leaves. Unoxidized tea leaves are used to make tea leaf, which is one of the less processed varieties of tea. It therefore, contains the most powerful antioxidants and beneficial polyphenols.
Green tea polyphenols include epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate, epicatechins, and flavanols, all of which are being studied in the lab for their potential in vivo effects. Kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin are three types of flavonoids found in various parts. Although the caffeine in green tea can improve mental alertness, there is only weak, inconclusive evidence that it reduces the risk of most cancers or cardiovascular diseases, and there is no evidence that it aids weight loss.
Catechins are the main antioxidant dealers among the biologically active compounds found in Camellia sinesis. According to recent medical studies, the presence of function structural agencies and the range of hydroxyl agencies have a major impact on catechins' antioxidant activity. Unfermented inexperienced tea is the best source of those compounds.

2023.03.28 09:17 Azn_Btrfly Person behind me in a long line kept bumping me. What's the best way to handle it?

I (40f) was at Universal Studios Hollywood waiting in line for the Studio Tour. Line was about a 30 minute wait. The lady behind me kept bumping me from behind every few minutes. At 4'9" and under 100lbs, I am totally non confrontational so I kept my eyes forward and tried to ignore it. Halfway through the line, my kid (13m) got thirsty. He had a small backpack on with a water bottle in the outer side pocket. I helped him pull it out of the pocket so he didn't have to remove the backpack to get it. After he took a swig, he handed the bottle back to me. The line quickly moved up about 15 feet while he stood there so I could put the water bottle back into the pocket. The lady then went, "EXCUSE ME!". I ignored that too. Not like we are going to get to the front of the line any faster. A few more bumps later, I told my kid to let me carry the backpack. Now there was at least a buffer between us. As we got close to the front, I started to become passive aggressive by keeping my feet planted, but turning from side to side here and there to bump her back whenever she bumped into me. What do you think is the best way to deal with that type of situation?

2023.03.28 09:10 Grey_wolf_whenever Something about the idea of never speaking to my family again has shifted in me

I want to post this here because I don't know where else to share it and I want to know if anyone relates. I apologize, it is massive. It is my first time posting on this board and I am under some emotional duress.
My family unit is basically five people, myself 30m, my older sister 35f, our biological father, our younger step sister 19f and our step mother.
I have issues with my older sister. Every time we're together there's inevitably a conversation that leaves me feeling horrible. I honestly feel insane typing this, like some part of me is convinced that I'm imagining it, or over reacting. But the most recent situation went like this, at a family gathering the day after a wedding, the five of us and my amazing partner, my plus one for the nuptials. Older Sister talked to me about my relationship with a semi estranged biological mother that I have worked to repair a lot of damage from over a decade and a half from a divorce. Her tone was accusatory,
she starts with a "mom thinks you hate her", I reply "I don't think mom thinks I hate her, I know I don't visit enough but-"
"then why don't you visit more, she thinks you hate her"
"I know I should, it's just a really, really, long bus ride and-"
"why don't you rent a car? You're an adult"
I am an adult, we had just spoken earlier, as a family several hours ago, about my difficulty finding a job after being laid off in January.
"It's still a long drive. I honestly wish Mom would visit sometimes" "It's only 2 hours, that's not a long drive and you're making excuses" "2 hours is a long drive for m-" "No it isn't"
My expression changes. I am now having a bad time. After a shockingly, inappropriately short amount of time, sooner than I could say a word, my sister immediately says "what? What are you glaring at me for?" And offers a vaguely remembered taunt about me being angry.
Mom visits me about once a year, I visit her once or twice a year, usually overnight. This is more contact than we've had in the past. I talk to Mom, she doesn't think I hate her. We have less issues than ever. It's still a sore spot, for who wouldn't it be? I can't functionally imagine a situation in which my sister doesn't know this will make me emotional. In fact, I think it transcends a personal emotional effect: this is rude. It's purpose is to inflict pain. If this is the story of a repeating cycle, one that always starts the same way is it foolish to think this?
I went into an incredibly blank state, all I could do was walk around. I felt like I couldn't speak, and sitting outside the gathering I see my step mom. She asks what's wrong, I reply, she says "I see" and goes back into the party. Later on, it torments me that I tried to share this with her and neither her, nor her daughter who I used to consider very close could simply knock on my door. Accused of "closing them off" I maintain: I was just down the hall.
I felt like I could see the future. What always happens, happening again. Eventually I'll talk to my father. I just can't help it, it's very hard to contain, her words can cut me so deep. And every time he just acts like I'm a rude jerk for being upset. I don't need him to intervene, I've told him this when I apologize for being upset, i would be so helped by even condolence. I've been begging at this altar of paternal affection, I'm here to tell you: there is no God.
During a family dinner a year or more ago, the five of us, my sister complained about anxiety symptoms and I offered a suggestion: a combination therapy and anti anxiety prescription. I'm not a doctor but that's not the point: I was sharing it along with the information that it had worked for me, the first time I had told my parents I had even done therapy, frowned upon by our them, I thought this offering of information would help ease her fears about seeking treatment.
She responds, loudly and in tears "I don't need therapy, I don't have anxiety like you, I'm autistic you fucking asshole"
I feel the need to share this: she has used "autism" as a get out jail free card many times.
She cries and goes upstairs, the dinner continues silently. I ask my father if he thinks that reaction was warranted and he has no response.
"I don't know, you're being dramatic. Besides, I don't know what you want me to do"
I don't know what you want me to do. Ive heard that sentence a hundred times. The solution can not come from me, because then he can do it sarcastically. It's happened before. Words of comfort. I have told him this, how a simple "I'm sorry about that and I don't think you deserved it" would be an entire world.
This most recent time, after the conversation about our mother, I found myself in such a depression, I didn't speak for the rest of the day and just kept my head down in my room.
The next morning when she was out I said something, I could feel my blood pressure rise and my body tense as it almost unwillingly slipped out of my mouth.
"[Sister] lectured me about mom"
The eye roll I received made me want to die. Complete rejection, disappointment in a look. "You do this every time" he says. " why do you have to be all moody?" He sneers. But I've told him why, we had this conversation today, 8 weeks ago, 4 months ago, a year ago, 2 years ago. We have this same conversation, me andy father, and when he responds he always says "I don't know what you want me to do", the tone completely dismissive. This time I say it together with him, in unison, to make a point. I've heard it so many times, and all I want is for him to show the level of interest to offer me any condolence. He knows this, and it would be easy to just put an arm on my shoulder and say "I'm sorry that happened to you" but it never happens, the point is clear: I am being disruptive, and that itself is the problem.
My father is an Olympic champion of dismissal. On one family trip I was having a hard day, my older sister making many repeated small comments, criticizing looks, intelligence, morality etc. My parents, father and step mother, pull me aside to tell me that it's because in the conversation over breakfast I had referred to myself as the "athletic child" and that she had taken offense to that, as it means I called her fat. In context, my comment earlier in the day was a joke about my own athleticism: "I got all the athletics genetics" I jested, after all I had a couple semesters high school tennis and I enjoy jogging. We were a trio of very nerdy kids, unathletic kids. Im skinnier than my sister, we do not have the exact same build, but I didn't think she's overweight and I have never, ever, in my remembered life made a comment about it, disparaging or not. My sister shouts at me, red faced, as I am in line at an outdoor restroom "Owen! Move! You are always in the way!" My crime? There were people behind and I was taking a too long to figure out the coin operated bathroom door (you have to put the coin in the slot. Still, rare to see). Privately I become upset by the days events and let slip a phrase in anger "shes been yelling at me since high school", a strategic blunder as my father now pretends I'm actually angry about something that happened in high school, and he can successfully play it off as A, a ridiculous long time grudge that I'm being horrible and holding onto and B, denying knowledge of the situation. He tells me I should "save it for my therapist"
My sister gets back to and the conversation is dropped completely. The rest of family talks to my older sister as if nothing has happened and I follow like a silent wounded dog on the days activities.
I am not addressed by any member of the rest of the group trip, besides my always loving partner, who my family talks past me to speak to about anything. My dad waits a few hours to ask me a casual question, about some boat he saw, I respond in quiet, defeated, embarrassed, impotent anger "that's what you want to talk to me about?" And he resumes his previous eye roll. He takes the same dismissive voice "oh, you're still upset."
I simply have lost the spirit of it. My stomach and back feel tremendous pain from the stress, I go nearly comatose. I cant eat, I can't hold onto water, and I spend the rest of the day, luckily that same day, shivering in the bedroom of an air bnb, being held by my supportive partner, waiting for our flight. I am in emotional ruin, I've explained it so many times I've lost count but: every time this happens I feel the effects worse, like it kills a larger part of me.
My partner and I avoid talking to them. I have nothing to say. I look at my father like a stranger, so indifferent to anything, so willing to plead ignorance "how was I supposed to know you were being upset" He'll say.
We call and Uber and move to sneak away. I make a weak goodbye. "That's sad" my father says, barely looking up."
"You're a selfish, spoiled child who doesn't deserve any of this" my step mother responds. More context: I have crossed the state in a blizzard to take care of this womans pets after her original sitter, my younger step sisters boyfriend, had to suddenly leave them adrift mid vacation, with no one to feed the dog and cat. She later bought her daughters boyfriend a car. They put a down payment on my sister's house. But I'm spoiled, because they have done the pitiable charity of including me. I tell her I never want to hear from her again. You won't, she responds. I offer a final Fuck You, she returns it. I leave.
I imagine their reaction to reading this. Poking full of holes "it says recently, but that vacation was technically a year ago" they'd immediately, bluntly state.
I do not offer this sentence, full dissolution, lightly, it is not common. I understand the pain of being disconnected from family all too well: my father's father has disowned him, and, in a letter addressed to "resident". It is an early, defining memory of mine. I was too young to understand the reasons, if there were any, I still don't know. The only times I've brought it up came after equally miserable conversations. It came from me as an offer, a plea that I have to, in any way I can, claw away from this miserable maelstrom of rejection that eats me alive.
I've never felt I had the strength to follow through on it, I am so needy. I despise my weakness immensely, that I crave their approval, the comfort of something I'm so held at arms length away.
But now, writing this, here, it feels like a light. A chance for both parties to forgive, and heal, and not keep opening wounds and I think maybe I understand my grandfather a little. Maybe it's not unimaginable this would be for the best.

How to Choose the Best Ink for Custom T-Shirt Printing?
Choosing the right ink is a crucial step in custom t shirt printing. The type of ink you use can affect the quality, durability, and overall appearance of your printed design. Here are some tips to help you choose the best ink for your custom t-shirt printing needs:
  1. Consider the Fabric Type: Different fabrics require different types of ink. For example, if you are printing on a cotton t-shirt, water-based ink is a great choice because it bonds well with the fabric and provides a soft feel. However, if you are printing on a polyester or nylon shirt, you may need to use a special type of ink like dye sublimation or plastisol ink.
  2. Look for Durability: If you want your custom t-shirt design to last a long time, you need to choose an ink that is durable and can withstand multiple items of washing. Plastisol ink is known for its durability and is a popular choice for custom t-shirt printing.
  3. Check for Environmental Impact: If you are concerned about the environmental impact of your custom t-shirt printing, you can choose an eco-friendly ink like water-based or discharge ink. These inks are biodegradable and less harmful to the environment.
  4. Consult with a Professional: If you are unsure about which ink to use, you can consult with a professional printer like ApparelnBags. They can provide you with expert advice and help you choose the best ink for your custom t-shirt printing needs.
In summary, choosing the best ink for custom t-shirt printing involves considering the fabric type, durability, and environmental impact, and consulting with a professional if needed. ApparelnBags is a great resource for custom t-shirt printing and can help you choose the best ink for your project.

2023.03.28 08:37 damodardmi Difference Between, Rayon, Viscose, Modal, and Cotton Suppliers

Before you connect with fabric manufacturers in India to create your new summer collection, you must know the difference between rayon, cotton, viscose, and modal fabrics and pick the best one for your end product. In this article, you will learn the key differences between the four most popular fabrics for summer outfits and where to find the top fabric companies in India for your brand.

Differences Between Cotton, Rayon, Viscose, and Modal

Natural vs. Synthetic

Rayon, Viscose, Modal, and Cotton are all plant-based fabrics. However, while cotton is all natural and can be farmed organically, Rayon is categorized as semi-synthetic because the cellulose obtained from the wood pulp goes through a long chemical process to create the final product. While all four fabrics share similarities, there are key differences between them. Meanwhile, if you are looking for trading options for rayon and cotton fabric companies in India, contact our expert here. We have 60+ years of experience in buying and selling all types of fabrics worldwide. We are associated with top textile companies in India, Egypt, Vietnam, China, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Central, and South Asia, and other regions.

Cotton Fabric

Cotton is the most popular naturally grown fiber, extensively used to manufacture comfortable summer dresses and outfits. It is also called the King of fibers. Cotton fiber is derived from the woolly hairs that grow in protective layers around the cotton seeds, called bolls. They go through several non-chemical treatments before being spun into yarns. Cotton fiber can hold water 25 times more than its body weight. World’s largest cotton fabric manufacturers are India, China, and the USA. Four types of cotton commonly found today are Egyptian cotton, Upland cotton, Organic cotton, Supima cotton, Pima cotton, and Sea Island cotton. Upland cotton is the most widely grown cotton in the world, holding 90% of global cotton production. India is one of the largest cotton suppliers, and it primarily produces Shankar-6 cotton (used for high-quality textiles and apparel) and Suvin cotton (known for fineness and luster). Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka are the most prominent cotton fabric manufacturers in India.

Rayon Fabric

Rayon was first introduced to the world as the silk substitute. knitted fabric manufacturers in India Though farmed from the wood pulp of different trees, it is categorized as a semi-synthetic or biosynthetic fabric and not a natural fabric. This is because the production process starts from a natural material and it undergoes extensive chemical processing, essentially altering its original state. The wood pulp is taken from trees like beech, bamboo, pine, etc. The pulp is dissolved in chemicals to alter its core and turn into something called alkali cellulose. This further goes through different chemical treatments to change its final structure. For this reason, rayon fabric feels considerably different from cotton in appearance and feel. For instance, rayon fabric looks and feels silky, soft, and lustrous. It easily stretches, holds shape in pleats and ruffles, retains dye better, and can be printed in a thousand different qualities, weights, textures, types, designs, and patterns. In fact, it is one of the lightest fabrics in the world. You can stitch up an entire dress in less than 100 gms. You can also create heavier and more durable products with Rayon fabric. Rayon blends with other materials like polyester and cotton to create different finishes.

Modal and Viscose

Modal and Viscose are two main types of Rayon with slightly altered texture and appearance. They are two rapidly growing fabrics in the garment and apparel industry, known for producing affordable, fast fashion products. Viscose was the first rayon invented in 1880. It looks expensive and radiant and has a beautiful sheen. It has excellent drapability and absorbs moisture better but shrinks and stretches easily when wet. And therefore, unlike other rayon types, viscose fabrics require dry cleaning. Viscose is used in making shirts, skirts, gowns, and kurtas. Modal is a rapidly growing Rayon fabric in the fashion world. It is the softest and most comfortable form of rayon. Modal is specially farmed from the beech-tree pulp and is often mixed with other materials like elastane and spandex to create a stretchy and soft material. This is why modal is often used in making undergarments and activewear.

The main difference between cotton and rayon is the manufacturing process. Cotton comes from the cotton tree, a natural renewable resource. Rayon comes from chemically regenerated wood pulp. Both are excellent fabrics for making lightweight and soft clothing like t-shirts, dresses, skirts, and gowns. Rayon will be a better choice if you need fabric, particularly for sultry summer garments, such as maxis, midis, kaftans, and yoga pants. But if you are in the production of garments for soft and sensitive skin, like for infants, then contact pure c polyester yarn manufacturers in india via DMI. 2023.03.28 08:18 strawberryclefairy I finally finished Scarlet and need to talk about it

So, yeah okay I'm slow lol. I'm an adult, what can I say. Amazingly, I got very few spoilers before/as I was playing, so none of these opinions are because I was spoiled for anything and developed an opinion before I saw it in context in the game. Speaking of, there will be spoilers in here.
The New Pokemon: Boy, I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! We're starting on the highest high note because, geez I love these new 'mons. They're cute, they're clever, they're weird, they're everything Pokemon should be imo. Shoutouts especially to the Smoliv, Fidough, and Tinkatink lines. And Palafin? *chef's kiss* All in all, new Pokemon this gen are 10/10 wanna catch 'em all.
The Open World: Where to start? The complete lack of direction despite the absence of level scaling leading to you being incredibly underleveled half the time (though I did find being underleveled fun and exciting, at least) and incredibly OVERleveled the rest of the time (which is horribly boring)? The fact that most of the world seems to be a nigh-featureless green plain dotted with Pokestops and sprinkled liberally with random Pokemon spawns? The fact that a refusal to chop the world up into a handful of separate load zones resulted in a barely-functional game that was not worth the one cool view of the whole region from on top of the mountain?
It's honestly perplexing. With all the excellent open world games out there, somehow Pokemon ends up like this. It's even more confusing because of Legends Arceus - literally, that's the way to do it! Open world doesn't need to mean "absolutely no load zones", it just means "go wherever, do your thing".
Unfortunately, despite "choose your path" being the advertising scheme for this game, there isn't much choice about it. Either you do everything in the correct (completely unstated and unhinted) order, or you suffer. I went up the left side of the map first, before heading to the right side of the map. The left side was exciting, and taking down Great Tusk with my early-to-mid-20s team was a strategic challenge that recalled when I played the Golden Sun games for the first time back in high school. Unfortunately, there was only going to be one more moment like that in the game. The entire right half of Paldea was a slog, in comparison - because no one, from wild Pokemon to Gym Leaders, could stand up to even one hit from any of my 'mons (at least without Sturdy). I was bored - genuinely BORED - playing through most of the game after Great Tusk. The only true challenge that I'd face was fighting Arven with a mid-40s team (he was much easier to defeat than Great Tusk, but at least it got my heart racing).
Speaking of "choose your path", the fact that you are forced to complete all three storylines before going to Area Zero had me frankly infuriated by the end. I literally bought this game for Anxiety Budew and ancient Pokemon, and one of the main draws was held over my head until I'd done everything?! To draw a comparison, imagine if Skyrim had advertised itself as a go-anywhere-do-anything game and also with the mystery of all the cool stuff you'd get to find and do in Sovngarde, but then when you actually got the game and played through ~50 hours of it, only then were you finally informed that you'd have to do the entire main storyline as well as the Companions and the College of Winterhold before being allowed to actually go to Sovngarde. I don't mind endgame areas being locked away, but then like, maybe don't hype those endgame areas so hard?
Honestly, as far as the open world aspect of this game goes, I could go on. I was shocked at the state of affairs after reaching the little town between the player's home and Mesagoza. A game guide tells me it's called Los Palatos. Did you even remember it's there? I wouldn't blame you if you didn't - there's literally nothing to do there. That's where you discover that you can't go into houses and that you can't interact in any way with most NPCs. I actually thought my game was broken at first when I couldn't enter buildings, and the lack of NPC dialogue makes the vast majority of towns in the game even more disappointingly flat than the wilderness. It was so bleak that around halfway through the game I described it to my fiance as reminding me of Daggerfall, and quite frankly I'd stick to that assertion (for the southern half of Paldea, at least), but in retrospect I might be doing a disservice to Daggerfall.
Luckily, the northern half of Paldea is at least a little more polished than the southern half. You still can't talk to almost anyone or enter almost any buildings, but at least the locations have a little more colour to them. The town with the normal and ghost gyms were actually interesting and memorable, I enjoyed that the ice gym was just out on the slopes all alone, and the snowy mountain, dragon lake, and bamboo forest biomes were unique and interesting.
All in all, I'd give the open world aspect of SV 2/10 for very poor planning and execution, as well as misleading advertisement.
Generational Gimmicks: As a huge magical girl fan, I'm not going to say that the sparkleriffic crystal Pokemon don't entertain me, they definitely do. I can't say I remembered they existed most of the time, but as I'm just entering the postgame now perhaps I'll finally be doing higher-level raids and enjoying a bit more of this aspect of the game. The idea of changing a Pokemon's type with terastallization is also still intriguing to me, and I really enjoyed the bit of personality the use of this imbued into the Gym Leaders. I still haven't successfully made use of it yet, but I'd like to try. It's also made me want to tune in to the world championships for the first time in... ever, so that must count for something. I won't say that I don't miss the spectacle of Dynamaxing my Pokemon, but at least raids are back in some form - I really liked them in SwSh.
Picnics are cute. I like the idea of chilling with my Pokemon out... wherever. I miss playing with my Pokemon from the SwSh campsites, as well as the more detailed interactions between Pokemon that happened there, but the way they'll play with each other cooperatively with the ball is heartwarming and adorable. I wish that they didn't rush you so hard through washing your Pokemon. I definitely appreciate being able to heal my whole team with sandwiches. I like messing with the myriad of sandwich ingredients, too - one of the only things about making curry in SwSh that disappointed me was that I couldn't mix ingredients - and am just starting to try to figure out recipes to make specific effects happen. I must admit, though, a shadow when placing ingredients would be extremely helpful; this isn't the 3DS and a lot of the time I can't tell what I'm doing.
The school was... cute, I guess? Kind of disappointing, to be honest. I imagined roaming the halls, talking to other students, but you have to fast travel between rooms. I'd hoped the classes would give an insight into history, science, and culture in the Pokemon world, but thus far what I've received is trick questions in maths, a self-advertisement in biology, and a terastallization tutorial in art. I haven't done all the classes, though, so maybe when I power through the rest they'll be better. I can't say I'm counting on it, though. It is kind of cute how you get to know the teachers as you advance in school, at least.
Finally, and this may seem weird, but I miss Pokejobs from SwSh. It was so nice to be able to free my poor boxed Pokemon from time to time to let them do something useful, and they'd bring home some pretty nice items occasionally. Never before SwSh had I felt emotionally close to 200+ Pokemon per game file, and honestly I miss it here. It was cute, probably low-memory, and would have fit in here just fine - maybe the Pokemon could have been working around the school this time, doing various odd jobs. Alas.
Ultimately, I'd give the generational gimmicks 6.5/10, mostly for the sparkles and sandwiches.
Dressing Up: This gets its own section because... I'm the kind of person that spends an hour choosing what to wear every time I turn on Animal Crossing, because most of my nearly-maxed storage is filled with clothes. And yeah... it's pretty lacking in SV.
Now, don't get me wrong. I know that before generation 6 the only character customization available was choosing between a boy or a girl - and in gens 1 and most of 2, not even that - but the last two generations have been so great in that aspect, and I'm just so underwhelmed this time around. Like I get that we're in school, sure. But being bound to one and only one colour scheme the entire game is painful. Why did they even bother making clothes that clash with the school uniform colours??
I don't even like most of the options that are there, with so much focus being put on this "motorcyclist" kind of look. Like I get that Koraidon/Miraidon are a Big Thing in these games, but... ugh lol. And I truly must ask, where are my skirts? Why have I been bound to pants this entire playthrough? Honestly, I'm so frustrated. At least there were two cool rainbow clothing items - the tights and the beanie. I did enjoy those.
The one thing I do want to say is improved here is literally making your character themselves. The facial options were much more varied than I expected and allowed me to make a character that's cute and unique. And the hair colours! FINALLY, a red hair option that isn't maroon!! I was so delighted to see it, I haven't changed the colour the entire game! The option to customize your character at the very beginning of the game was also really nice, it let me get into my character's skin from the beginning rather than changing her hair and eye colour in the third town and feeling weird about it.
Character customization and dress-up get a collective 6/10 from me - not overall good and not overall bad. However, if I was breaking it down, the customization alone I'd rank an easy 9. Very nice in that aspect.
The Quests: Before jumping into the three main quests, I need to say one other thing about quests in this game, and that is: there aren't sidequests. It took a long time for me to figure out why this game was claiming to be open world and literally was open world, but didn't feel like an open world game, and this is it. It's literally the only open world game I've ever encountered that has absolutely no sidequests. There's no walking into a new town and finding out that this person needs a bunch of this item, and that person needs that Pokemon. It's just empty. This is once again perplexing because of the myriad lovely sidequests in Legends Arceus, but then in the main game they drop the ball?
One could argue that Pokedex completion is a sidequest, but... it's literally only the one. You're also never given the quest unless you go talk to Mr Jacq, and literally no one else, anywhere gives you quests, so why would you think to talk to him?? After trying to talk to everyone in Los Palatos and Mesagoza and being disappointed, it didn't even cross my mind that the teachers would be interesting. Not to mention that they're hidden behind a weird fast travel system. I had to be told to go talk to him by my fiance. Very disappointing, but I suppose there's at least that one.
On to the main quests, and we're going to go through them in the order that I did, meaning that first of all is Arven, Mabosstiff, and the Titans. This quest was my raison d'etre for at least half the game. I needed to help that dog, and quite frankly I got the most emotional satisfaction out of this storyline, both because of Mabosstiff and because I enjoyed going from thinking Arven was kind of a jerk to sharing this great bond with him. The Dragon Titan in particular was clever, and I really enjoyed it.
Becoming the new Champion was fun (except when I was heinously overleveled)! It wasn't impressive, but it didn't really need to be. I was always curious who I'd run into in the next gym, and the slow revelation of the Elite Four members was pretty neat. I think these might be the most well-developed Elite Four members outside of Alola maybe, actually? Unsure on that front, but it certainly felt like a nice change of pace. The Gym Leaders were kind of neat, too - some (Larry, Grusha, Iono) more than others (sorry, bug gym girl whose name I don't even remember), but all in all, it was fun enough to meet them all. This is the basic Pokemon experience I'm here for, in the end - I have no complaints other than the lack of level scaling.
And then there's Starfall Street. I know this is the storyline everyone loved. I know this is the one where people say they cried at the end. But for me, personally, it was... just awful.
The basic concept of Starfall Street was solid, to begin with - there's a group of bullies, and you need to stop them. Cool! I'm into stopping bullies. But with each successive base we raided, it was made more and more apparent that these kids weren't the bullies, they were the bullied kids. It's made even worse by the game actively working to make you feel bad about what you're doing while also making your character all smiles through the whole thing. The character I lovingly made became a monster. There's an option to say to "Clive" that Cassiopeia is untrustworthy, but never any option to say no, this isn't right and I won't do it. The fact that they keep literally every scrap of justification for your actions to be part of the big reveal at the end of the storyline does not help this one bit.
Furthermore, not only are you tricked and manipulated into bullying the bullied kids in-game, you're also tricked into it in a metagame sense. I reiterate that I bought this game basically for the ancient Pokemon. 50ish hours in, I'm told that I have to keep beating up bullied kids and breaking up their anti-bully-bridage friend group in order to access the thing I bought the game for, in an open-world game. I genuinely considered returning the game and deleting my file.
This is the part where I could talk at length about how I myself was bullied severely in school for my entire childhood, how most adults just gaslit kids who were being bullied when I was a kid, how that bullying itself turned into even more gaslighting when I was a teenager, how I was the weird theater kid, how if I was actually attending Naranja Academy I'd probably have joined Team Star, how being forced to be the bully and relive my childhood from the other side of the aisle made me feel physically sick, how forcing myself through this storyline forced me to confront deep trauma while everyone told me that was ridiculous and this story was great, and ultimately messed me up so bad I was having days-long depressive spells punctuated by wild angry mood swings. However, I'll leave it at that quick skim through the muck. Suffice to say, I found Starfall Street to be perhaps the worst plot Pokemon has ever had. Those of you familiar with fanfiction terminology might know the phrase "untagged trigger", and that's the best summary I have of Starfall Street: it was one big untagged trigger for bully victims... even, apparently, at age 35.
Then there's the end. I appreciate all the main characters gathering for this part (even if I was still spitting mad at Penny), and I enjoyed leading everyone around through Area Zero. It made the game feel... less empty, to have friends with you, especially since they were chatting along the way. I loved the progression of this part, because the way the information was doled out reminded me of going through Pokemon Mansion back in Pokemon Red, reading about Mew and Mewtwo. And oh no, the plot reveals. Oh no, Professor Sada! Oh no. Honestly, I came out of it heartbroken but loving it. The battles were excellent and kept me guessing, and the whole thing was a rollercoaster that didn't drag out the precipice of doom too long. I can even put up with Penny if she helps make Arven feel better.
It's hard to put this number together, since I felt such disparate ways about the different parts of the plot. I suppose I'd rate the sidequests at 1 and the Titans at 9, becoming a Champion at 7, Starfall at a flat 0 and Area Zero at 8, which averages to... exactly 5/10. What a basic number. It somehow expresses it all, and doesn't express any of it. Interestingly, looking back, I see now that Arven basically carried this game. Go figure.
Inevitable Comparisons and Conclusion: For more than half of my playthrough of Pokemon Scarlet, I'd turn off the game for the night and, a few minutes later, realise I wished I'd just been playing Pokemon Shield instead. If this was a big article being posted on a gaming website, that's a sentence that would be in large print and bolded beneath a vaguely-related Shutterstock image: For more than half of my playthrough of Pokemon Scarlet, I'd turn off the game for the night and, a few minutes later, realise I wished I'd just been playing Pokemon Shield instead. It would probably be the final image of the article, too.
Don't get me wrong, there are things I'll miss if and when I do go back to Shield - the new Pokemon, the sandwiches, Koraidon, ancient Pokemon, the ability to view IVs (once I get it). But honestly, I kind of wish I could just go play Shield, except with all the new Pokemon and moves. Maybe Nemona and Arven, and maybe even some of the teachers, Elite Four, Gym Leaders, and Team Star Bosses popping in from time to time. The rest of the game, I'm not likely to miss. I find that sad, really. As someone who has played Pokemon games through the good and the bad in the series, and the good and the bad parts of my life since I was a preteen huddled under the living room lamp playing Pokemon Red, I find that sad.
My final score, averaging all my other scores equally, is apparently a 5.9/10, just barely above the midpoint. I feel like that score is too generous in some ways, but I gave my honest feelings for all of them, so it must be correct. It's a disappointing number, just like this was ultimately a disappointing game.
I'll keep on playing Pokemon Scarlet - there's the gyms to re-challenge and Pokemon I missed the first time around to catch, now that I'm all loaded up with Quick Balls. I really like that there's an actual Champion's duty to fulfill at the end of the game this time, should you want to. I suppose 5.9/10 is just good enough for me to continue playing. But I won't pretend that whenever I hear about updates to the game I don't always hope there will be a new interior added, or a couple lines of NPC dialogue slipped in. Maybe someday. Maybe with the DLCs. We'll just have to wait and see. Until then, thank you for reading.
If you've made it this far, I apologise. I've been ready to boil over with all of this for the last 90-odd hours of gameplay and I suppose it finally happened. If you read this all, you're the real champion here! Thank you for letting me get this all off my chest.
