2023.06.08 20:44 Think1stAsk2nd Does Aspect of the Wildrage affect Raven/Poison Creeper?

Questions is in the title. I was wondering if the passive from Raven/Poison Creeper are affected by Wildrage/Bestial Rampage. Does the attack speed make the creepers and ravens appear faster than their respective 5 and 7-second timers?

2023.06.08 20:44 siyans Unpopular opinion, this game is pretty meh

Well, yes, I feel like I may be of the few that this game is not that great or lack a lot with a lot of flaws
  1. The skill tree is boring, there no real choice to do, the few choice are all side upgrade, either you get an extra 5-10% dmg on a skill or some pretty boring +5% resist or +5% to vulnerable and such
  2. this is an ARPG where 80% of your fight is only using 2 skill, by having most skill of your hot-bar on a 15-20 seconds cooldown, fight are extremely dull and uninteresting, all you do is main skill, some core skill and once in a while activate the other stuff and just wait.. where is the fun here? I want to be chaining attack, no just boringly just do my main attack and use the core skill when I have enough resources
  3. Like in D3 the type of weapon you use has no real impact, same for most elemental damage, using earth magic or storm magic has NO actual difference other than their side upgrade counterpart in the skill tree. (like having a +% to something while using a specific type)
  4. antiquated need to repair your equipment mechanic, its serve really NO purpose and its a dumb mechanic.
  5. gem power are so boring too and they take too much space
  6. walking form A to B when there is no waypoint is so slow, even with the mount.
  7. from level 30 to 60 or so, the game slow down to a slug, since you already chosen all your 5 skill and the ultimate passive, the levelling there is just nothing fun before you start getting maybe the interesting node of the paragon.
Its sad, the game look great but there is so many many flaws and I would grant this game a big 6/10 from what I experienced so far, with one level 40 druid and just another level 10 necro.
I feel like there is nothing Blizzard actually did to make the game "interesting" or worth doing anything, all the aspect are pretty meh and doesnt give any kind of "wow" moment, getting an extra 5 or 10% to something all the time is not interesting really

2023.06.08 20:38 Sandpaper--Tongue Our 7 month old rescue!

Our 7 month old rescue!
The basics: Nico Robin (bonus points if you know her namesake!) is almost seven months old! She weighs about 40 lbs (18 kg). She was born in Texas, USA, and was transported to a rescue in Massachusetts, USA. She has some whispies on her butt, and the tip of her tail reminds me of a paint brush (see first and second photos for reference).
Her characteristics: Nico LOVES to dig and playing fetch. She picks up our commands very quickly, and is overall a very fast learner! When we have her off leash, she never wanders far away from us. We have a 15 lb (7 kg) long-haired cat who gets along with; sometimes they’ll lick each other and cuddle and it’s very, very sweet. She loves to cuddle with us, too, and will always stick close to us. She will sometimes fixate on birds and rabbits, and is getting better with training (though if it was up to her, she’d chase them).
Potentially (?) other helpful info: She came from a litter of five other pups, and they all looked very similar to her (last photo was on the rescue site that made us fall in love).
I think she has some larger hound or lab (she was described as a lab mix by the shelter but aren’t they all?), but then a smaller terrier breed (see sixth photo) given she doesn’t have that big of paws and is pretty lean.
I think that’s everything! Looking forward to hearing everyone’s theories.

2023.06.08 20:33 yinyanghapa My former bank is suing me, what can they really do to me?

My primary income source has been from stock photography (passive income) with an agency and it plunged during COVID and never really went back up. I've been doing some gig work but its really hard to make decent money when you have to be renting a car to work, and the main one I've been doing (food delivery) just isn't viable during the summer because of all the competition from other drivers. I defaulted a year ago and have been planning on bankruptcy, but both types of bankruptcies are painful, and my bank has now sued me for the debt (over $20k.). I'm wondering the viability of the third option, just to let them get a judgement on me. I live in a van and have a second car that I share with my mom. Both of them are over 15 years old. The only thing that I have that MAY have value is my stock photography collection, but from what I've seen there is no market for selling the full rights to stock photographs. I read that wage garnishments only apply if your an employee. So what can the bank do to me if they get a judgement? I live in California if that's relevant.

2023.06.08 20:31 iriskitt I became the president of a really messed up, small, employee-run grocers union by chance. Contract bargaining is approaching. I have no experience. Need help!

PLEASE HELP- I know the following is long, but if you have the time and any experience that can help, SOLIDARITY NEEDED!
I am a minimum wage deli employee and a struggling parent living paycheck to paycheck in rural California, where I moved after covid wrecked my life as I knew it. In April, I became the president of our union.
Our union board consists of 3 positions: President, Vice President, and Secretary-Treasurer. Myself and the Sec-Treas ran unopposed at the same time as a result of the past President quitting the company and resigning, and the Sec-Treas stepping down in turn. When we ran, it was with idealistic hopes, and zero knowledge of the can of worms we were opening.
"The Union" serves only the chain of small grocery stores that I work for- which I'll call "The Company".
The Company has made their business model on grocery stores in small, rural areas where job options are limited. Employees end up accepting extremely low wages and poor working conditions in exchange for a job close to their homes.
In the 70s and 80s, more store chains were a part of the union, but they went out of business, leaving only The Company included in the union. My understanding was during those prior decades before unions were gutted by federal legislation, it was a pretty good union.
Over time, The Company has found ways to largely control the union.
Unhappy employees with terrible work conditions and pay have formed a terrible impression of the union- the general belief is the union is "fake" or a joke and just something to take money from their checks. So, participation is low and they struggle to fill Union Rep and Board positions.
As a result The Company is actively involved in recruiting reps/board members, and recruiting these loyal employees willing to go the extra mile has seemingly worked out in their favor. It seems like the past board members have not held ground, and have ceded valuable rights to company pressure.
Past bargain negotiations have only handed things away to The Company. Benefits that I know have been taken away in recent contract negotiations include PTO for part-timers, and bonuses for non-management employees (store and department managers still receive profit-based bonuses). We have no record and no idea of what these things may have been ceded in exchange for.
At this point, all that union due are being spent on are Christmas parties, 3 $100 "Employee-appreciation lunches", and monthly "birthday parties" of $35/store with cookies or cakes for all employees. This is IF the union rep has been able to make these things happen. We strongly feel these are all things the company should be paying for, but the union has done it historically and the parties are apparently super popular in the stores that actually have them.
When we took on this huge responsibility, it was in hopes we could make some noticeable change that will benefit our deeply struggling coworkers.
However, since taking over I have found myself in a bureaucratic nightmare- issues with the bank, unpaid invoices, messy accounting, an unreconciled bank account, and the like. I do have a history as a bookkeeper, so it's doable, but nightmarishly time consuming and not at all in line with the main goal of negotiating a more favorable contract.
Updated Contract is due 7/31/23, rapidly approaching. Our meeting with The Company (the owners) is June 15.
Per the 1975 union constitution, the President holds the sole bargaining power with the employer.
We have held a meeting with the union reps, and gathered their feedback on things they'd like to see change.
Unilateral feedback is that NONE of the 14 stores has a sufficient breakroom (all have been jerry-rigged from closets, rafter storage, warehouse, or safe room, lacking AC, privacy, on-camera, in customer area, no filtered water-dispenser, etc. etc). Not sure if this is an issue for contract negotiation, or some other route?
The contact items we are looking to improve are,
(1) Safety- currently all that's in this section is that safety rules be posted and the store have ONE first-aid kit always accessible. Mind you, these are big grocery stores with many departments- not always reasonable to run across the store to a first aid kit when an employee is bleeding. At our store alone there have been repeated, repeated injuries from many of the same hazards that have gone unaddressed. Currently there is a company policy that store managers must complete a monthly safety check and keep these noted in a binder (I've been told this is also state law, but have been unable to find this info). We want to add this process to our contract, including requirements to address these hazards, so we have some leverage when the manager fails to do so.
(2) 15 minute breaks. We are currently only allotted 10 minute breaks, and this is way too short for cashiers to go to the bathroom and also rest. Many California grocery stores have 15 minute breaks so we think this should be reasonable.
(3) Clock-in/Out grace periods. This has been an issue for our employees, and there have been incidents where the company has chosen to terminate employments for being <5min late- only in certain incidences where they wanted to fire the employee anyway and needed a reason. Other employees consistently get away with it.
(4) Bonuses for non-management- this is something we lost, and it would be amazing to get back but feels like such a huge item that was given away, and it seems almost impossible they'll ever give back. Any advice for trying for this one would be extremely welcome.
Wage negotiation is a separate event which will happen in August.
We have ideas for what we want, but have been told the owners we will be meeting with will come prepared with the lawyer-prepared contract they want, try to take everything they can, intimidate, and cede nothing.
I have zero experience with bargaining, and am not sure even what format my proposed changes should be in.
I was willing to spend emergency funds on contract advise, so I reached out to three law firms for advice, but received no response.
I am massively in need of help, any info or advice would be deeply appreciated.

2023.06.08 20:29 DontEatThatTaco Print head moving (badly) after cancel print

Hi all
Having some trouble with canceling a print.
Macros involved:
[gcode_macro START_PRINT] gcode: {% set BED = params.BEDdefault(60)float %} {% set EXTRUDER = params.EXTRUDERdefault(205)float %} # ; gcode parameters for area bed mesh variable_parameter_AREA_START : 0,0 variable_parameter_AREA_END : 0,0 # {% set AREA_START = params.AREA_STARTdefault(0,0)float %} # {% set AREA_END = params.AREA_ENDdefault(0,0)float %} # M104 S{EXTRUDER} # M140 S{BED} M109 S{EXTRUDER} M190 S{BED} G28 # M109 S{EXTRUDER} # M190 S{BED} # BED_MESH_PROFILE LOAD=default BED_MESH_CLEAR BED_MESH_CALIBRATE AREA_START={params.AREA_STARTdefault("0,0")} AREA_END={params.AREA_ENDdefault("0,0")} G28 Z G90 M83 G1 X1 Y35 F5000 G1 Z0.3 F2000 G92 E0 G1 Y135 E10 F1000 G1 Y150 F15000 G1 Z5 F2000 M82 [gcode_macro END_PRINT] gcode: M140 S0 M104 S0 G92 E1 G1 E-1 F300 M106 S0 G28 X Y; Home X Y G90 SAVE_IF_SET
[gcode_macro SAVE_AT_END] variable_save: 0 gcode: SET_GCODE_VARIABLE MACRO=SAVE_AT_END VARIABLE=save VALUE=1 [gcode_macro SAVE_IF_SET] gcode: {% if printer["gcode_macro SAVE_AT_END"].save == 1 %} {printer.gcode.action_respond_info("saving and restarting now")} SAVE_CONFIG {% endif %}
[gcode_macro CANCEL_PRINT] rename_existing: BASE_CANCEL_PRINT gcode: END_PRINT
This - if I'm understanding correctly - should just be backing off the filament a bit, then moving my print head to the back-right corner (Ender 5 Pro).
However, after moving to that position, lately the printer has been going a bit crazy:
Yesterday, it lifted the Z, then moved the print head to the center and attempted to home. Unlike a normal homing, though, it waited around 15 second and then it *lifted* the bed, rather than dropping it by 15 like my normal homing process does, so it does not appear to have used the normal G28 process, because if it was it would have dropped the bed. It dragged across the print surface (PEI) and I now have a nice scrape there.
Just now I canceled another print, and again it went to the rear right corner as expected, but then after the same 15 seconds or so, it lifted the bed again and moved along the Y axis all the way to the front of the printer. Once again, it dragged the nozzle/heatblock along the bed, but it did not move at all on the X axis.
Anyone have any idea why the printer would start moving *after* it finishes the 'end_print' macro? There are no moves in any of the macros that deal with the 'save_if_set' macro, so I am at a loss - and now both sides of my PEI are scraped and I don't trust the printer, since I'm concerned if the printer finishes and does the G28 X Y, then starts moving again, it's going to slam into a finished print.

2023.06.08 20:22 Serg_Busel Breaking News from the Clan Wars, 06/08/2023!

Breaking News from the Clan Wars, 06/08/2023!
👨‍🚀 Commanders!
Here's the Breaking News from the latest Clan Wars. Let's dive in.
▪ The current leaders of the clan leaderboard, TheFinalFrontier, took aim at the ships of Pain&Gain-DE. It was an impressive display, at least for TFF. The ships of Pain&Gain-DE were left in shambles. The final score was 24:12 in favor of TFF.
▪ Representatives of Хаос launched an attack on HYDE, and it was quite successful. They secured 24 stars compared to HYDE's 19. An interesting fact: Хаос conducted exactly one more attack than their opponents.
ShipFaced fleet faced off against PiratesBay fleet. The winner is clear... It's ShipFaced! They claimed 24 stars against 6. An excellent outcome!
▪ Representatives of Blackhole replicated Хаос success. Conducting one more attack than ShadowReavers, they emerged victorious with a score of 24:15.
Dominus also performed admirably. They destroyed the defensive ships of the Epicureans and achieved victory with a score of 24:5.
▪ An interesting encounter took place! The ships of КосмоФлот clashed with the ships of Angels of Apocalypse. Surely, representatives of both clans are friends outside of the battles. But at the Arena, there's no room for friendship! Thus, the victory goes to КосмоФлот. They emerged triumphant with a score of 24:16.
▪ Someone, donate some resources to Koreans for new ships! They were annihilated by representatives of BurnToDeft in the last war.
YourFace has certainly earned the nickname "Season Killers." At least, that's certainly the case this time. They completely wiped out the MARAUDER fleet and emerged victorious with a score of 24:0.
As usual, here are the winners among the top 20 clans that were not mentioned by the HQ. We will highlight the interesting achievements of some of these clans separately.
💡 The "Complete Destruction" Achievement is awarded to the clan KCCO. They achieved victory with a score of 24:0.
💡 The "Not very quick, but consistent" Achievement is awarded to representatives of the GROM clan. They completed their attacks in 20 minutes and 18 seconds.
💡 The "Just to Be Sure!" Achievement is awarded to representatives of the TwoFace clan. They conducted 38 attacks and earned 24 stars.
💡 The "Speedy Fleet" and "Coordination is Our Specialty" Achievements are awarded to the Domination clan. They achieved victory in just 11 minutes and 19 seconds, conducting 20 attacks and earning 24 stars.
The remaining winners among the top 20 clans are:
  • Impact
  • Ganjanaughts
  • Nova_Empire
  • Clan_of_Hope

Quarterback Roger Staubach, known as “Captain America”, was the winner of the 1963 Heisman and is an NFL Hall of Famer, the only QB in history to achieve both feats.

No conference titles? Navy’s bad! Kidding of course, they didn’t have a chance to win any as an independent until 2015 when they joined the AAC. As you can see on the list above, Navy’s clearly had some bad years, with a whopping 14 seasons of 3 or less wins. To make up for it, they’ve achieved some remarkable highs for a service academy, with 11 finishes inside my top 50. A 10-2 season in 2004 narrowly misses out on Navy’s top 5 seasons because of their 107th ranked strength of schedule that year. Despite some remarkable QB play in recent years from Keenan Reynolds and Malcolm Perry, the 2 consensus All-Americans are both from RB Napoleon McCallum in 1983 and 1985, who finished 6th and 7th in Heisman voting in those years, respectively. Speaking of Keenan Reynolds, he set the NCAA career record for rushing TDs in 2015, accumulating 88 in his 4 year career.

Top 5 Seasons

Worst Season: 2001 (0-10 overall, Independent)
Navy gets a pass for 2001. 2 weeks into the season, the September 15th game against Northwestern was cancelled shortly after the 9/11 attacks. The Army-Navy game was more than a game this year, with President George W. Bush taking part in the on-field coin toss. Army prevailed 26-17 on the day. Navy LB Brian Stann ribbed that Navy only got pregame visits from President Bush and Senator John McCain, while Army received an impassioned speech from General Norman Schwarzkopf. The game finished off a stressful year for Navy, who fired head coach Charlie Weatherbie after an 0-7 start. On-field lows were a 7-70 loss to Georgia Tech, a loss to 3-9 Tulane, and of course the Army-Navy Game. Navy hired Paul Johnson for 2002, who’d turn around the program for good. If you’re an MMA fan, you probably recognize Brian Stann who I quoted above. Stann went on to become a successful UFC fighter and commentator, joining Fox Sports after his retirement from MMA in 2013.
5. 2013 (9-4 overall, Independent)
A season with many highs. A 3-1 start included a 41-35 win over Indiana and 28-10 over Air Force. After losing 2 straight to strong Duke and Toledo teams, Navy went 5-1 the rest of the regular season, only losing 34-38 to a Notre Dame team that finished in the top 25. Wins included 24-21 over Pitt, 58-52 in 3OT over a San Jose State team coming off an 11-2 year, and 34-7 in the Army-Navy Game. A perfect ground game of 366 rushing yards against Middle Tennessee in the bowl led to a 24-6 win to finish 9-4 in Navy’s second to last season as an Independent. QB Keenan Reynolds (more on him later) threw for 1000+ yards with 8 TD 2 INT, but most importantly ran for 1346 yards and 31 TD, setting an NCAA record for rushing TDs in a season by a QB. Reynolds also ran for 7 TD against San Jose State, an NCAA record. Outside of Reynolds, longtime New England Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona was also on this team, and didn’t have a bad snap all season long.
4. 1996 (9-3 overall, Independent)
Even for as bad as 2001 was, Charlie Weatherbie’s teams had their moments. A 5-1 start featured 3 wins over Power 6 teams: 10-6 over Rutgers, 64-27 over Duke, and 47-18 over Wake Forest. That set up a Shamrock Classic game in Ireland between Navy and Notre Dame. A 54-27 win for Notre Dame set a record for the longest winning streak over an annual opponent at 33 games. Unfazed, Navy won 3 more straight including a nice 36-26 win over Georgia Tech in Atlanta. But even so, Weatherbie’s teams…left a lot to be desired. Navy watched their 21-3 lead over Army evaporate by the end of the game, stopped at the goal line twice for a 28-24 Army victory. To be fair, this was one of Army’s best teams of the past few decades, and they finished ranked #25. Navy rebounded to beat Steve Mariucci’s Cal team in the Aloha Bowl 42-38 to finish 9-3. Navy OC Paul Johnson left to become Georgia Southern’s head coach, and would go on to perfect the triple option at Navy from 2002-07 and institute it at Georgia Tech from 2008-18. WR LeBron Butts (no relation to the basketball player) had 14 catches for 179 yards and 2 TD.
3. 2009 (10-4 overall, Independent)
Oh look, one of my all time favorite players, QB Ricky Dobbs. Dobbs was a steady work horse all season. He only averaged 3.6 yards per carry, but had the 3rd most carries in the nation with 315 and ran for 1203 yards with an NCAA QB record 27 TD. The record wouldn’t be broken until 2013 by Navy’s own Keenan Reynolds. Dobbs led a steady offense combined with a great defense (19.4 PPG allowed), leading to Navy’s 2nd double digit win season since 1905. Navy had a chance to tie #6 Ohio State with 2 minutes left, but their 2 point conversion attempt was returned by OSU for 2 pts themselves, making the final score 27-31. A 14-27 loss two weeks later to Pitt turned out to be another quality loss, with Pitt going on to finish 10-3 and #15. A 10-4 final record included wins such as 16-13 over 8-5 Air Force, 38-35 over 8-5 SMU, 13-10 over Wake Forest, 17-3 over Army, 35-13 in the bowl over 8-5 Missouri, and the pièce de résistance, 23-21 over #19 Notre Dame in South Bend. Previously on a 43-year losing streak to the Irish heading into 2007, this was now the 2nd time in 3 years Navy had beaten Notre Dame, previously unthinkable.
2. 2019 (11-2 overall, 7-1 American)
After Keenan Reynolds left for the NFL, the QB position had big shoes to fill. Following a stopgap 9-5 record in 2016, 2017 arrived. Zach Abey took the majority of snaps, but Malcolm Perry was too talented to keep off the field, far and away the best athlete on the team. Perry had a monstrous year with 9 starts at slot back and 3 at QB, rushing for 1182 yards and 11 TD on 8.6(!) YPC, and was the team’s 2nd leading receiver with 13 catches for 303 yards and 2 TD. Perry started 5 games at QB in 2018, but dealt with injuries en route to a 3-10 season. That led to a mysterious 2019, with Navy picked 5th in the 6-team AAC West Division.
A 2-1 start showed potential, with a 42-10 win over East Carolina and close 23-35 loss to one of the conference favorites in Memphis. A 34-25 win over an Air Force team that would finish 11-2 showed Navy was back to their winning ways, with a real chance at a bowl as long as Perry stayed healthy. Navy reeled off blowout win after blowout win, eventually getting up to #23 before losing to #16 Notre Dame 20-52. Now at 7-2, Navy still had a shot at making the AAC title game. Perry showed up big against #25 SMU, rushing for 195 yards and throwing for 162 in a 35-28 win. After beating Houston 56-41, Navy just needed Memphis to drop one game, but the Tigers won out to make the AAC title game at 11-1. Navy played Army in the last game as usual, and Perry WENT NUCLEAR. He didn’t throw a single pass, rushing for 304 yards on 29 carries with 2 TD in a 31-7 win. In the bowl against 8-4 Kansas State, Perry again went for 200+ on the ground, winning 20-17 on a last second FG. Navy finished the year #20 in the country.
Perry went off all year long, winning AAC Offensive POTY with 1084 passing yards 7 TD 3 INT with 2017 rushing yards and 21 TD on 6.8 YPC. Perry legitimately was one of the quickest athletes in the country, if you watch his highlights he looks like a quicker but slower Kyler Murray. Because of this he was drafted in the 7th round by the Miami Dolphins as a WR, and has caught 9 passes for 92 yards and 1 TD in the NFL.
1. 2015 (11-2 overall, 7-1 American)
2015 was a magical year not just for Navy fans, but for college football fans following Navy. QB Keenan Reynolds was the darling of football, and went down as arguably the greatest option QB in college football history. Reynolds became one of football’s biggest stories as Navy kept winning throughout the year, starting 9-1 with wins such as 33-11 over 8-6 Air Force, 29-17 over 8-5 USF, and 45-20 over #13 Memphis. Navy got as high as #15 in the nation and was one of the favorites to earn the Group of 5’s spot in a New Years 6 bowl. After a loss to Houston the dream ended, but they still had the Army-Navy game to tend to. The game earned its biggest rating this century with a 5.1 overnight, mostly due to Reynolds’ star power. Reynolds finished 5th in Heisman voting, and when he wasn’t invited to the ceremony, people protested and lobbied for changing the invitation rules. A 44-28 win in the bowl over 8-4 Pitt capped Navy’s first ever 11 win season, and their highest finish in over 50 years at #18.
Navy announced the retirement of Reynolds’ #19 jersey after the season, joining a short list of Roger Staubach (12), Joe Bellino (27), and Napoleon McCallum (30). Navy’s 36 wins in Reynolds’ 4 years tied the class of 1909 for the most ever by a 4-year Navy squad. Reynolds finished as the NCAA’s all-time leading rushing TD leader with 88. In 2015 he threw for 1203 yards 8 TD 1 INT with 1373 rushing yards and 24 TD. This was the 3rd straight season he finished top 5 in rushing TDs in the country. He earned 3rd Team All-American status, won the AAC Offensive POTY, and won the James E. Sullivan Award given to the most outstanding collegiate or Olympic athlete in the United States. After the season, he was drafted in the 6th round by the Baltimore Ravens, the first Navy QB drafted since Roger Staubach in 1964.

5th Quarter

What do you remember about Keenan Reynolds and that 2015 season? How about Malcolm Perry? Who was the better passer, runner, and overall player between the two? Is Reynolds the greatest option QB of all time, even over Tommie Frazier? What other Navy moments/games/plays/players do you remember? How does Navy look to fare in the upcoming seasons? Does Ken Niumatalolo get enough credit in the college football media for what he’s done at Navy? What else is on your mind about Navy?

2023.06.08 20:19 banned-from-rbooks I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - LGS Edition

Hey there, I’m a longtime player that recently returned to the game after about a 10-year hiatus.
After being traumatized by the experience that is the online discord Roll20 community, I decided to try my luck at some good ol’ fashioned in-person D&D.
My latest online campaign hadn’t been going well for a few sessions after the DM took control of a dragon we were supposed to fight and started using it to awkwardly flirt with the only female player while the rest of us spent literal hours perpetually failing our saves against a fear aura with a seemingly unbeatable DC. The female player’s druid was okay though with her 28 Wisdom, and wearing enough artifact-tier magic items to probably qualify as an actual construct.
Anyway, there were probably some red flags I should have picked up on earlier… But by this point my standards were so low that as long as the DM could demonstrate some frontal lobe development and an absolutely basic understanding of the rules, that was good enough for me.
Regardless, all of this is irrelevant to my current predicament.
A bit of background on me. Most of my experience comes from playing 3.5 in college. The culture was a bit different back then, with less focus on player power fantasy and more on brutal campaigns with tactically difficult encounters (at least that’s how we played)... This will be somewhat relevant later.
Anyway, on with the story.
Our tale begins at the local game store with an experienced, older DM. He’s been playing D&D for much longer than me, and I get excited as we start talking about 3.5. The current campaign is 5e, which I don’t like as much, but everyone plays it and it’s fine.
We start in a default Forgotten Realms setting at level 3. The other players are: Gnoll Rogue, Orc Fighter, Halfling Cleric, Human Bard and me (Human Sorcerer).
We roll for stats, which is a red flag, and of course almost everyone cheats, but whatever… That’s just a given. I put a 16 in CHA and garbage for almost everything else, while everyone except the Bard has like, at least 2 17+’s and everything else above 13. Strangely, the DM doesn’t seem to even notice or care.
Regardless, the first session actually goes well. We introduce ourselves and meet up to guard an outpost on the edge of town from bandit raids, and fight some easy combats.
Anyway, session two comes along and the problems start.
We are wandering through the woods and suddenly get ambushed and put in an impossible combat. They have at least 5 mounted fighters, a cleric, a handful of archers and an arcane caster that nukes half the group with a fireball on round two, downing two players. They also have a ton of cover because we accidentally stumbled upon their secret camp or something, while we have none.
I’m ready for the TPK when the bandits surround us and demand our surrender, which of course we do. They say they’ll let us live if we give them all our gold, so… That happens.
We tend to our wounds and stumble back to the outpost, report our failure and everyone generally feels like shit… But the outpost commander pays us each about half of what we lost for ‘finding the location of their camp’, which feels lame, but okay.
And then the game continues… And pretty much every combat from then on starts to turn into a repeat of this scenario.
I quickly notice that monsters have widely inconsistent stat blocks. One encounter we’ll fight 5 goblins that go down without a fight - and the next they’ll have multiple attacks, magic weapons and armor, absurd saves, advantage on pretty much everything, 30+ hit points each, etc.
We actually had a combat where I upcasted my Sleep to second level and affected literally 0 goblins. The DM said they worked for a powerful wizard who gave them focuses to make them immune. I then wasted a turn casting Web in an advantageous spot, and all 8 goblins passed their save without fail (except for one) over three rounds… Which is pretty much statistically impossible even for creatures with moderately high reflex saves.
To make things worse, the encounters seemed to be specifically tailored to counter our party. Whenever we found a strategy that worked, the monsters magically either spontaneously happened to have a solution, or the next fight was even worse.
One time the entire party was routed fighting a bunch of dumb melee skeletons, and so I made myself levitate 15-feet into the air and blasted them with cantrips until they were all dead. The next fight, the skeletons were flying.
Another time, the Fighter ate an attack of opportunity from a large Owlbear so the Bard could get out of melee, only to find out that this Owlbear had multiple reactions for some reason.
Our summons would also be turned against us by ‘powerful wizards’ in the area, and on more than one occasion, when we were winning, a group of enemies were straight up teleported into the middle of our group from outside of combat and got a full round of attacks against us.
I think some of us were suspicious that the DM was just straight up cheating on rolls as well, but a few players were unfamiliar with the rules so they kinda just trusted everything. I started writing down how much HP each monster required to take down, the number of passed and failed saves, etc., and yeah - it became obvious pretty quickly, I think, that the DM was just fudging everything on his end.
And look, I’m no stranger to impossibly difficult combat or campaigns - but at least in those cases the DM was playing by the rules, so even losing could still be fun… But when my actions have no actual impact on the outcome of the battle because nothing is real, I might as well do nothing at all.
But the DM never actually killed anyone, although sometimes I kind of wished he would kill me.
The typical combat would usually go something like this: some weak monsters show up, we start fighting, are suddenly ambushed by much stronger enemies out of nowhere, which then either let us escape or just leave once we are dying and trying to escape.
And the constantly making us feel like shit extended to the story as well. There was no overarching plot. We weren’t the heroes, or even important at all, but just a ragtag band of irrelevant drifters barely scraping together enough gold to not starve.
Not only were we complete losers that could only succeed at quests by getting our asses handed to us and returning with ‘information’, but every decision we made came back to bite us in the ass.
One time we helped a poor villager woman find her son who was lost in the woods, only to be hunted down in a completely different province by a band of extremely powerful cultists who had marked the kid as a sacrifice.
Also, the Gnoll had been eating the corpses of our enemies and generally acting like a murder hobo… And originally our party had a problem with it, but the player got very defensive OOC whenever our characters (IC) tried to stop him and claimed we were ‘ruining his RP’. So I think we all kinda gave up and just ignored him.
So yeah, it turns out he ate the son of some influential noble and we were hunted down by extremely powerful bounty hunters (we were level 4 and they had a wizard who could cast 6th level spells). We frantically escaped and managed to find a body part of said noble. The DM graciously let us resurrect the kid at a church, but we had to fork over literally all of our money and almost every magic item we had earned by that point.
So on top of everything, the party was starting to fall apart. The Gnoll wanted to kill and eat just about everyone, which the Orc thought was funny… But it also made doing any sort of quest just about impossible.
By level 5, we started breaking out into PVP about once a session (usually everyone vs. the Gnoll/Orc)… In response, the Gnoll and Orc (who were newer players) started asking the DM for extremely powerful abilities (that were either incredibly vague or straight up didn’t make sense within the context of the rules) or insane equipment that they ‘should’ have because of their race/background/heritage or whatever just to get an edge - which, to his credit, the DM denied (although the Orc randomly found a +1 Flametongue Greatsword in a cave somewhere).
I do not know why I am still in this game. The DM is nice, friendly and has a very passive demeanor. He also clearly has a very deep understanding of the game across multiple editions, so I’m honestly mystified as to what he is getting out of this - as he doesn’t appear to take any kind of pleasure in just torturing us. He keeps telling us that the early game is ‘hard’ because we are just starting out and making a name for ourselves, but it never gets any easier.
I still have fun hanging out with some of the players and interacting with NPCs, but any time it comes to combat, I keep hoping in vain that this time will be different only to be slapped in the face again.
Anyway, I feel like now I know how the humans in that Ellison novel who were eternally tormented by AM must have felt.
Admittedly though, it’s still a better experience than anything I’ve found in the online Roll20 community.
Please help me.

2023.06.08 20:13 Kahzgul [Near As I Can Tell...] Priorities, People! (A Youngling's Illustrated Primer)

Hello.
My name is Kahzgul. You may know me from my shockingly above average conquest guide, the incredible seething hatred I hold for the Inquisitorus faction, or that one time I opened up photoshop just to shit on CG's art team underpaid and overworked intern.
But I'm not here to talk to you about that today.
No, I'm here to speak to all of the young men, women, and bith of the SWGoH community, and to help you help yourself when it comes to determining what to farm, when to farm it, and whether blue or green milk tastes better (it's green; I'll explain why later).
You see, every day, a little boy or girl posts something that asks the question, "should I farm this (endgame content)?" And I have been moved by their plight. There is no greater good than that of a good soldier following orders, and second to that, love of the empire, but third - a distant third - is raising the younglings to become powerful sand people, in their prime, ready to take on the OH GOD IT'S ANAKIN AND WHAT IS HE DOI---
I'm sorry about that. The previous writer has been sacked. Or, rather, diced into tiny barbecue squares by a bloodthirsty jedi master, who - despite his great acumen - was not granted a seat on the council. Quite unfair. If something like that were to happen to me, well, I'm quite sure I'd team up with the wrinkliest old fart I could find and straight murder everyone in one of those school lightsaberings you read about in the news. Can you believe we're up to nearly 2 lightsaberings per day? It's absurd. This entire republic is rotten to the core and you can just feel the need for a strong leader to step in, impose a military dictatorship, and start blowing up entire planets. Did you know my sister lives on Alderaan? I think that's where we should st---
Sorry about that. That writer has also been sacked. And the person responsible for the first sacking was also sacked. What we were trying to do was to answer the question: Should i farm this very expensive shiny new endgame content with my brand new account that doesn't even have CLS unlocked yet?
The answer to this question is, as you probably expect, a long winded parable about some nonsense or other that has nothing to do with anything and serves no purpose at all excepting to remind you that the author has recently been watching an awful lot of Monty Python and that this is, in fact, and ex-parrot.
Actually, the answer is another question:
Should you, who earns only $36,000 per year, buy your 15 year old with their learner's permit a ferrari as their first car?
Of course you should! N't. You shouldn't.
That joke works better if you say it out loud. Like that joke where the guy goes to the doctor and says he's got a penis stuck in his throat and the doctor says how do you know and the guy says well look and then you rub through adam's apple a bunch and spit on your friend to whom you're telling the joke. Text just doesn't do it justice.
So, and now we've finally arrived at the helpful guide portion of this ramble, how is one to determine for themselves whether or not they should farm something? The self-determination part is really important. I like to live by this age-old adage: If you give a man a fire, he's warm for a night, but if you set him on fire he's warm for the rest of his life.
The answer is that, much like an elderly politician of your choosing's undergarments, it depends.
CG has, over the years, released three type of shiny and new things:
- One is what I'll call the "Jedi Knight Revan" style of new thing. 5 brand new characters come out who are required to get a 6th brand new and powerful character. Darth Revan, Starkiller, Dr. Aphra, and the soon-to-be-arriving Jedi Cal Kestis are all good examples of this sort of release. You can go after these right away if you like. There's no real barrier to entry and you can get something shiny and new out of the investment.
- The second is the "The Solo Movie" style of thing. Sometimes CG just adds some shit and it sucks ass for a really long time. Rogue One (okay now thanks to AdRad but that was several years later), Young Han Solo and friends (nest was cool), the Inks when they first came out and really even still if you're not at the point where you can get GI or Reva... stuff like that.
- And the third is the "Jedi Master Luke" style of thing. MOST of the shiny and new things CG adds build off of other things that were, at one time, shiny and new all on their own. These things are pretty easy for older players to go after because they already have all of the earlier requirements completed, but new players are going to find that earning this sort of thing is nigh impossible. I mean you need JKL which means you need the Wampa... Sometimes the chains of requirements are quite long.
For example, Leviathan needs you to have the Fury-Class Interceptor, which needs Malgus to pilot it, both of which need you to have been near max-crating conquest for a long time, which means you're well over 4M GP and don't need this guide anyway (but if you read this far, please know that I appreciate you more than padme appreciated Keira Knightley).
So what I'm saying is, the journey guide isn't particularly good at telling you whether a farm is reasonable or not. Some farms require r8 and r9 characters, and those are hard to get for people who are in 300M GP guilds, let alone people who aren't sure if a 20M GP guild will take them (sorry, egnards; we're really looking for someone with a 7 star lobot for DS Hoth platoons).
This game is a game about patience, first and foremost. It's also a game about space lasers and butchering amazing music by changing the song every time a button is pressed (which de facto makes it a game about turning off the sound of the game entirely). And it's a game about investment.
Where do you get the best return on investment for your limited resources?
Almost never farm new and shiny things. I don't care how candy-like the red button looks, Ren and Stimpy absolutely will not - oh. He pressed it. Well, if you have the impulse control of an anthropomorphic cartoon cat drawn by an army of lunatics balls deep in LSD, you should call 1-800-GAMBLER and seek help. I've heard 1 in 10 people who calls that number wins a prize! Also I can sing the entire "Log™" song from memory, which probably tells you a lot about the sort of person I am.
Your best return is going to be going for things that were new and shiny about a year ago, and it will remain your best return right up until you start running out of things to farm that fit that description (several years from now). Now, even that description leaves a w i d e array of things you could be going after. So which to choose? Well, with an eye towards the distant future, I recommend going after characters and ships first, and gear second. A roster with every character at 7 stars and G1 is better in my mind than one with five characters at r9 and no one else unlocked (although if you had everyone at G1 and 7 stars you're certainly cheating so... grain of salt). Characters who unlock other characters should be prioritized over ones who just sit there looking stupid (or, in CUP's case, being a badass meme guy).
If you're slightly farther along, I'd say it's time to start thinking about how you catch up to the power curve of the game. Think of the curve as a wave you're trying to surf. You gotta paddle a bit to catch it, but once you do... you're golden. So you have to know where the wave is going to form, right? You can't just start surfing when you're still on the beach. That's lame. So you're going to want to get characters who get you more characters so you can hopefully get even more characters in the future.
There are two places to do that more than any other: Fleet Arena, where you earn daily crystals, which let you do more energy refreshes so you can earn more characters, and Conquest, where you earn new and shiny characters loooong before they're available to people who aren't maxing conquest every time. And the good news is that there's some overlap there - the fleet arena for newer players can be well handled by Executor, which needs Piett to pilot, and Piett is a key part of the Imp Trooper conquest team (Veers / Piett / Starck / Gideon / Range) which is all supports and runs a nasty turn meter train (and also can be used to complete not one but two Assault Battle events that reward relic mats and shards and stuff).
You'll need to buy one set of relic 8 materials with crystals, probably. So save up a few!
If you've got executor, then I recommend going after JML and Wat next. That combo (along with the reqs for JML) enables a LOT of cheese strategies in conquest. All of this will also help your GAC success.
If you've hit these benchmarks, then you've probably done enough that you have a sense of where your roster could benefit more. Remember to keep in mind "how does this help me get more characters" and you'll find you're doing very well.
TL;DR: Plan on being a year or more behind the release schedule of new characters, and you'll be able to stay astride of your fleet shard while climbing GAC ranks and prepping to dominate conquest when you get to 4M GP. Don't buy CG's marketing hype; take a "wait and see" approach to new characters and let the whales figure out who is good and who isn't before you spend time and energy on them.

2023.06.08 20:11 Lost_Grounds Player gets timed out every 15-30 seconds? Any advice?

I can't for the life of me figure this out. I run a small server with my friends, around 10 active players. One of them has an issue where he gets timed out every single time he tries to log on.
For the first couple months he didn't have this issue, but it randomly started happening and now he gets timed out every time he logs in.
According to the console, he logs on, then times out. No other error or anything going on. I asked him what it shows HIM, and he gave me this: ```Internal Exception: java.net.SocketException: Connection reset```.
I use Bloom for h0sting, Fabric for server software, and he is on a Mac. I had him ping the server IP from terminal and it came back at 30ms so it's not like he can't connect or he's traditionally lagging out. Everyone else has perfect connection and he used to as well, so I'm not sure what's causing this issue for him now. Server is hosted in northern Virginia and he's located in Connecticut.

2023.06.08 20:08 4yelhsa From a Traumatic Teaching Experience to Engineering

Warning, this is a pretty long read. TL;DR: I spent 18 months working at the worst schools with the worst students experiencing terrible working conditions most people only hear about on T.V. before deciding to transition out of teaching and into engineering.

I graduated in December 2016 with a degree in Physics concentrating in secondary education. My degree program was essentially a double major, they removed the requirements for a couple of courses from physics major and added in an entire course load of education courses. I graduated with more than 160 credit hours and still I was terribly under prepared for handling a classroom on my own.

My practicum assignment was at a "good school". The teacher I worked under my last semester had nearly flawless classroom control; mostly due to the student population generally being well behaved, but I didn't understand that at the time. The classroom management during my teaching periods was also pretty good. She taught me her methods for classroom management and I thought I had it down. Plus when I left she sent me away with a large binder of her lessons, so I didn't really need worry about lesson planning. I thought I was ready. I was incredibly thankful to her and confident when I accepted my mid-year posting at a Title IX school.

And what a mistake that was. That school and that district was insane. I accepted a posting to teach Physics to 11 and 12th graders and physical science to the 9th and 10th graders. This school ran on a block schedule so I had 8 periods of approximately 30 students that where I saw half of my students every other day with 2 hour long classes. When I arrived I found that my senior students had been with a sub the entire first semester learning physical science, that their math teacher did not exist, and that their ability to handle the rigor of physics was at absolute 0. Almost immediately after I began all of my senior students were failing. Big problem.

I was quickly pulled into a meeting with the principal and leadership where I was essentially told that if these students did not pass my class I would need to look for other employment come next year. Crank up the stress. Administration did not care that these kids did not deserve to pass physics due to their lacking foundations in math. I still don't understand how they expect students to pass physics which is based on algebra II/trig/geometry when these kids are barely studying algebra 1 under a constant string of revolving incompetent substitutes. But I was scared, so I essentially removed all maths from my class and just taught conceptual things. Basically instead of I throw the ball do the math to determine it's trajectory based on these initial numbers, the tasks became I throw the ball explain draw it's flight path and explain why it looks like that. It felt like I was doing these kids a huge disservice, but at the end of the year most of my students had passed physics and were onto the next course.

Aside from the curriculum requirements, the classroom management that entire year was a crap shoot. I found it impossible to manage these students who could not understand the concepts and did not want to learn them. I had boys flashing me their genitals, there were fights, there were students tossing things everywhere, they just could not shut up for even a moment, they stood on tables, they took my things, they stood in my space, and it was impossible to get anything done. I even had one student try to bribe me with her car and "sexual favors" for a passing grade on the final (holy fuck that was terrible).

Notably I remember that sometime during my 3rd or 4th month there, a student I'd never seen before was escorted into my classroom by police in handcuffs. They sat him down without a word, uncuffed him, and pulled me into the hallway where I was informed that this kid was on some type of reformation program. That he'd be attending my class from that day forward and that if he misbehaved to call them (the police!?) because he was "active" and "serious". lol wtf? That student unsurprisingly was fighting in my classroom almost immediately.

And those were just problems in my classroom, in that school during my first (and only) semester there were numerous fights in the halls between students, and even some between students and their teachers, students were caught having sex during school hours, there was a sex scandal between a teacher and her student and then she disappeared shortly after. There was a gun incident at a basketball game. After that they started making teachers come to school an hour earlier so that we could search every student as they came onto campus. I pulled plenty of weapons off kids during this time. And they made a locked door policy so that if students were late and missed the morning check they'd have to come through the front office to get it done by the staff there. It was dreadfully ineffective. I watched students jump the fences and be let in by others daily.

Around this time we got word that were was a shooting at our feeder school (a middle school that sends their kids to our high school). A student was murdered right outside of campus (literally in front of the neighboring building).

I worked at that school for only a single semester, and that wasn't by choice. After scaring me about the security of my job I worked really hard to keep it. I kept up with the crazy shenanigans happening on and around our campus, more than 90% of my students passed my class (even tho in my opinion they did not deserve to) and I spent many late nights rewriting my lesson plans and grading the work of my 240 students. I arrived at school at 6am I didn't get to leave until 4pm and I spent all night until 12 or 1am preparing for the next day on a $32k per year salary. And none of it mattered. After doing everything they asked of me that semester, they pink slipped me anyway. Asking around, I found out that a large majority of the first year teachers receive pink slips regardless of their performance and as a big fuck you I guess. They expected me to apply for my job a second time where I would definitely get it again and start off the year with a reset tenure timeline.

So I decided "fuck that" and moved home onto my mom's couch in California after summer school ended. Remember that school where the murder happened? I taught summer school for high school and middle school students there. And unexpectedly it was the best time I ever had teaching. I taught 3 periods of high school students (chemistry cuz whatever I guess the administration didn't care or something) and I taught 1 period of 7th grade earth science. In summer school classes were about 45 minutes each and the max class size I had was 20 kids per period. I only taught 2 kids at the middle school level.

Don't get me wrong, the conditions were still terrible. There were actively constructing within the school building that summer. The AC was turned off. The available classrooms not under renovation were incredibly tiny such that even though I didn't have more than 20 kids, they all had to practically sit on top of each other with less than 2 feet between them at any time. Every morning I had to seat kids in a certain order just to make sure everyone could actually reach their seats they were so close together. If a student came late there was always this huge shuffle where like 10 kids had to move around to make space so the late person could reach their desk. My desk was shoved into a tiny tiny little space as well and it was a tiny little desk so small that they should've just given me another kids desk and taken the one I had away. I would've preferred the extra space. Chemistry was one of the courses I didn't have to take in college and I was super not qualified to teach it to high school students. (Really wtf were they thinking? Lol I'm sure there were a ton of kids who needed remedial physics). But it didn't really matter that I was under educated in chemistry, since my teaching hours ended at noon and I had so few papers to grade, I had plenty of time to learn the curriculum and develop a lesson plan for the next day with assignments after grading papers. That summer I could easily get into bed before 8pm. It was amazing honestly.

Because I had so few students compared to the regular term, I was able to interact with each of them. Instead of being a number or a statistic in my grade book each student that summer was a real person I knew. I knew what they liked and didn't like, I spent time learning their hobbies and what they wanted to do. For kids who wanted to pursue STEM I had time to give them more attention/ feed their passion and for students who wanted to do something else I had time to get to know them as a person and understand what made them passionate about wrestling, or hair styling, or being a mechanic or whatever it was. It felt like a vacation even tho I was still working more than 8 hours a day.

A vacation I really needed because at the beginning of the new school year I moved back home to my mom's house and began teaching at my old high school which I knew was going to be rough based on my own experience as a student. I was hired as a "long term substitute" which I understand to be a way to circumvent my lack of credentials in the state of California. It allowed me to essentially operate as the teacher without having a license to teach. I (ironically) taught mathematics (algebra I and geometry). My teaching conditions were much better than my old school in some ways and much worse in others.

At my first school the kids were unruly but there wasn't anything that was specifically targeted towards me. They would mostly act out towards each other and leave me out of it and my new school it was the opposite. The kids were incredibly close with each other, so I still had problems with talking and general misbehavior, but when they acted out it was much more likely to be directed towards me specifically. I received a ton of threats of violence towards me personally that year. "I'll beat your ass Ms. 4Yelhsa" or "My mom/sistecousin/etc will beat your ass Ms. 4yelhsa" and there were plenty of comments on my appearance, voice, level of income, etc. Instead of bullying each other the kids essentially bullied me and there wasn't much I could do about it.

This school used a method of conflict resolution called "Restorative Justice". This essentially meant that regular forms of punishment such as in school suspensions, or detentions, etc were reserved to especially bad behavior. When a kid threatened to hit me they would be removed from my class for a few days but for the comments it was expected that I would handle that on my own through these "restorative sessions". Basically if a student acted out in my classroom, I was supposed to schedule what amounts to a counseling meeting with them where we would both discuss what happened and come to some sort of accord. I would ask that student why they felt like acting out, I was supposed to inquire to them about how my methods of teaching or classroom management caused them to act out, then I was supposed to explain to them why acting out like that was wrong and get them to agree to a deal to stop acting out if I fixed the things they brought up during our discussion. A conversation would basically go.
Student: Ms. Yelhsa I talked over you because so and so was helping me with x.
Me: Ok well why don't you raise your hand and I can help you with that and that way anyone who has the same question can also get my help
Student: No. I didn't want to do that because I didn't want to talk in front of everyone
Me: Ok why don't you just hold it until after the lesson is done then?
Student: But then I'll forget.
Me: Well you can't talk while I'm talking because it disrupts the class and distracts me from teaching everyone
Student: It's not even that big of a deal. I was just talking with them real quick.
It never worked as kids just talked in circles and were always unwilling to compromise (obviously because they're kids). It was nonsense, it didn't work, and it made it impossible for me to remove distractions from my classroom. It also took time away from other students because I would need to spend minutes having 1 on 1 debates essentially with children about how they should be behaving in my class and trying to bribe them into good behavior. I'll give you guys an extra 5 minutes of free time if we can be quiet during the next 20 minutes kind of energy.

Fights at the second school didn't happen on campus as much as at my first school, but the violence off campus was immense. I feel like several children from this school died every month. We held memorials for them during lunch and spoke about them during rallies. Over the intercom they'd make announcements about it. I'd often come across groups of students weeping during passing periods or lunch.

There was one time where a student was absent from my class for over a month, let's call him Brian. As like what I always did I marked his assignments as 0's, I mentioned it to leadership, I sent home some nominal communication about his attendance/grades to the guardian on file, etc. I followed the procedure. Then one day he was just back randomly and I let him have it. I gave him this huge lecture about how he needs to be concerned for his future, that school is important, that a good education could get him out of this neighborhood with these gangs and drugs, etc. And he stood there and took it then after I was done he very calmly told me that he'd been shot and that he nearly died and that's why he was gone all that time. And I really didn't believe him (even tho I should have considering the frequent deaths of our students to gun violence). I told him he shouldn't tell jokes like that and then he showed me his wound.

Imagining myself marking his assignments as 0's not really giving to much thought on it, emailing his parents about his attendance, going about like normal. What if he had really died? And I marked his grades as 0's? He went from a C to a solidly failing my class between the shooting and his death? Then when they put him in the dirt , he's got an F in Ms. 4yelhsa's class because Ms. 4yelhsa was following the procedure. That thought really fucked me up for while.

Surprisingly, the only student I've personally taught in my class / knew on a personal level that was murdered was at that the "good school" where I had my practicum. His name was Jason. It happened after I had left, but I knew Jason. I knew what he wanted to be when he grew up. I knew he was upset with the lack of attention he was getting at home. I knew him. When he was gunned down at a fast food restaurant less than a mile from campus on a school day over a drug deal gone intentionally wrong. My mentor from the practicum personally reached out to me about it. When Jason died it was a big event at that "good school". It was unordinary, the school mobilized a lot of capital to take care of its students in the aftermath, hiring special grief counselors. I imagine it was spoken about for many months in the hallways, that they held many special events for the remaining students, and it's still probably brought up occasionally amongst the staff even though that cohort of kids is long gone.

But Brian. If Brian died, I knew it'd be just a little blip on the radar and then it's over and gone forever. They'll make a little announcement, they'll say his name next to the others during the next rally and then it's business as usual. The different experience between a child that attends a "good school" and grows up in a "good neighborhood" and the child who attends these Title IX schools in these deadly neighborhoods is just so incredibly different it's wild.

After that incident with Brian, there were three other major events that I experienced. One was a threat of a possible active school shooter. I really don't know what happened, there was a lot of confusion. Just a normal day, then an alarm, I remember thinking how I didn't remember there being a drill planned for that day. Then an announcement, then a lot of panic. Then I remember ushering kids from the hallway into my room, then locking the door, then shushing my kids (thankfully they were all very quiet for once), then turning the lights off, then encouraging the students to hide along the wall by the door, then taping paper over the doors window, then sitting in silence for a long while with crying and scared kids, and then it was over. I still honestly have no real certain information of what happened. From the grapevine I gathered that there was a man on campus who may or may not have been looking for someone and who may or may not have had a gun and who left pretty quickly. The majority of the time I spent locked in that classroom with those kids wondering wtf was going on, the situation was already over and no one knew.

The second event was very similar. I was monitoring lunch when a fight broke out (a pretty rare event surprisingly). When these fights break out there's always a ton of kids who crowd around the fighting students and make it extremely difficult to break it up. Earlier in the school year a teacher broke her wrist trying to break up and fight and we'd been given training to leave it up to the security on campus. So when the fight happened I didn't even try to get involved. I just watched from a little ways away. Then suddenly a student yelled that one of the people fighting had a gun. Instant mayhem. Kids running in every direction. Tripping, falling, jumping over each other, me doing my best to direct traffic. No one listening. The area starts clearing out quickly, but there was never a gun. That kid who yelled it out was just trying to be funny. It wasn't funny, but it was a relief.

Then the third event was the shooting of Stephon Clark. Stephon Clark had attended the school at one point. Random Fact: Stephon Clark and I actually went to that school during the same time period, but I didn't know him. He was one year younger than me. I have a lot of friends who are his friends it wouldn't be strange if I've met him a number of times and just can't remember considering how close our circle of friends were. The community around that high school is not very big it's often that the alumni still have sisters or brothers or cousins or just a little homie from across the way attending after they leave. Also everyone sort of has ties to each other in some way because it's a very insular community. So the shooting of Stephon Clark was a big deal on campus. But it happened very close to the end of the school year, and I ended up never returning to work at that school. I know there were a bunch of protests and walk outs on campus but I wasn't around to see it.

When that year ended, I thought I would be kept on for the next year. Idk what happened but I was never contacted about a contract renewal. I was a long term sub and not a teacher there and I later learned that the lack of contact happened in error but at the time it felt like I had been silently fired. As a sub I did not have an option to convert my 9 month contract to a 12 month pay out plan so that summer I lived off my savings believing that I did not have a job waiting on me at the beginning of the next school year and I had a decision to make. So far teaching had not been what I was expecting at all. I went from making 32k in Alabama to making 30k in California. I was beyond destitute. My quality of life that year was in the dumps. I lived on my mothers couch for the entire 9 months and my mom is low key a hoarder and her faux leather couch was peeling and flaking, so it wasn't really fun. I was making $15/hr and that's not a lot so I thought I'd try looking for something different. And it sucked. I sent a ton of applications in to laboratories with no bites. for 2 months I was unemployed, not eligible for unemployment, and I burned through almost all of my savings. Right after the school year started it was clear that I'd have to go back to school in order to get away from teaching. So I called my old academic advisor and holy hell that saint she accepted me on the spot. I remember she said "Don't worry just come back to school right now".

and I went "right now? The semester has already started and I haven't even applied yet"

and she told me not to worry about that. That she would handle it and she did. Shout out to her she changed my life. I guess this is a perk of going to a small school. She knew me very well because at my college there are less than 30 physics students across all levels at any one time. If the department drops much lower than that it's always at risk of being shut down. She needed a student and I needed a school. It all just came together.

I had to submit an application as a formality and then a week later I drove my crappy car that broke down everywhere from California back to Alabama as a graduate level physics student for the fall 2018 semester. I was homeless for a little bit but an old buddy from college let me sleep on his floor for $300/mo. Shout out to him. The house was trash with roaches and mice but it definitely beat sleeping in my car. I slept in the dining room under a table for about 6 months. I spent my last little money on a 7 dollar air mattress and a pump for it and that thing sprung a leak 3 months later. I was always waking up with my butt on the ground lol. I couldn't pay my rent the second month but during that month, I got an internship at a DoD contracting company starting that summer and my advisor put me in touch with a professor who had grant money for research assistants. I started making $1k per month off that. Plus I got a job as a waitress and I was in business. After that school year ended I started my internship summer of 2019. When it was over, during the end of the internship presentations while leadership was in the room, I threw it all out there and just asked for a job. Straight up I literally ended my presentation with "And that's why you should hire me". And those dudes said yea sure. My 10 week summer internship was directly converted into a co-op (with a pay bump. hell yea). A room opened up in the place I was staying at so I got upgraded from sleeping under a table to sleeping in an empty room. I bought another blow up mattress and quit my job as a waitress. ya girl started doing big things. I graduated on time Spring 2020 and my coop with that company was converted into a full time position and just like that I was an engineer.

One of these days, if I can, I'd like to open up my own school. I think that'd be really cool to come back not as a teacher with my boots on the ground but as a founder one day. And hopefully at that time I can help some of these kids from these Title IX schools change their outcomes and provide them with better opportunities.

2023.06.08 20:07 paulrin Eve Motion Sensor Rules

Ok, I need some help with Eve Motion Sensor Automation / Rules. I purchased a couple of the new Matter Eve Motion Sensors. I got the initial “when detect motion = turn lights on” working no problem. But the lights turn off after 30 seconds, and I can’t quite figure out how to make the lights wait for (I don’t know) 15 minutes before actually turning off. Separate rules? One for on / one for off? Best tips? Anyone write it up on a blog? I’d rather not do delay switch (yes I have Homebridge running). There must be an easy way to make it work.
