Soft Hands to Foreman in 4 years: a framework for high school students to develop the skills sets for operating a trade business
2023.03.22 22:47 CPI-Guy Soft Hands to Foreman in 4 years: a framework for high school students to develop the skills sets for operating a trade business
This spawned out of another discussion on how High school students can develop an entrepreneurial skill stack. The intent of this is to provide a framework of resources for 18 years old who want to operate a trade business in 4 years. I know I have some blind spots and I would love your feedback on how to improve this.
I’ve spent over a decade in the trades; most of my experience is from working up the enlisted ranks in the Air Force. When I left active duty I was looking at buying different shops in my industry, so I could operate them as a business owner. I went from not knowing anything about a trade to running sections of 13 tradesmen. I read 30 to 50 books per year. So a lot of this is me condensing that into the things that gave me the most value on my journey. I am obviously limited by my perspective, that’s why I need your help to make this resource more valuable.
Yes, “just in time learning” is incredibly powerful. However, there are different personality types that need a top down framework.
To the 18 year old who wants to run a plumbing company in 4 years,
So there are two paths, which are very similar to the military’s officer vs enlisted dichotomy. There is the professional managebusiness operator which mirrors the officer path. Then there is the subject matter expert(SME) or trades men role, which mirrors the enlisted path. There are advantageous and disadvantageous to both of them.
What are some of the biggest problems that a trade business will run into?
- Issues with personnel
- Training new people
- Keeping required licenses/certifications
- Sales
- Operations
- Logistics
- Finances
So what are the advantageous/disadvantageous of each role, and how do they prepare you to tackle these issues?
- Tradesmen (enlisted)
- Pros
- Deep subject matter expert in that field
- This will allow you to know BS when you smell it
- Your future employees will know BS, when they smell it. Being a SME keeps you grounded.
- There is a steep learning curve for your first trade, but its way less for your second, third, etc.
- You will be able to understand how tradesmen work/think
- You can treat your time as an apprentice as a “paid internship.”
- You can get the licenses the business needs under your name. i.e. some jurisdictions require a master plumber for a plumbing company. If that’s you, you don’t need to worry about losing a key employee which shuts down the business.
- Cons
- If you don’t have a plan it can be “pigeon holing”
- Its hard on the body long term, 10 – 12 hrs. of hard labor 5-6 days a week. It's easy when your 20, much harder when you 45.
- Professional manager (officer)
- Pros
- Manage operations across industries
- Mange logistics across different business
- More in-depth understanding of how to raise capital and manage finances.
- Better business strategic management
- Cons
- Usually, more debt for higher education
- It can become too far removed from the “field” to know what matters on a tactical level
There is a way to maximize the benefits of both while negating the cons. This third path is were an enlisted (tradesmen) will cross over to officer (professional manager). However this has a long time horizon or a higher workload, depending on how you chunk things.
So what can that look like?
If you’re going for a four-year degree, make sure its business focused or aligned to the trades. Some examples; construction management, architecture, project management, business analyses, etc. While you’re going to school work in as many trades as possible. Think 3-6 months as an HVAC installer, 3 months as a “sparky” over summer break, work weekends as a landscaper during the spring, etc.
This will give you:
- A wide range of trade experience
- The ability to see how multiple business operate
- Away to reduce the amount of debt for higher education
Or
If you know what trade you want to go into, spend four years working as an apprentice to become a licensed journeymen. While you’re doing this create your own business school. You’ll have a lot of time going back and forth to job sites that you can redeem with audiobooks. Help out with the business operations side and learn sales.
This will give you:
- A journeymen level trade
- A debt free education
- A sizeable nest egg, depending on how much you save
- Enough experience to either open your own shop or buy one
If you want to create your own personalized business school, do the following:
Learn to lead different types of teams through a multitude of environments. If you don’t have a way to do this professionally, volunteer with your student organizations, local church, or other organization you’re passionate about.
Master your personnel finances. If you can’t control a $500 paycheck, how can you expect to control a $50,000 paycheck?
Here is tier list of books to replace a traditional BA in business. The average CEO of a fortunate 500 company reads 50 books per year. You can do at least 25 books. This frame work can get you that education within 25 books, 18 core books with 7 for electives. So 25 weeks or 1 year will save you 4 years fulltime. Also supplement this with free training from SBA.

2023.03.22 22:07 chonduu Goings on in Ball Ground March 22nd
Hello Ball Ground –
This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, we will have a team from the Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia in town, and they will be painting two murals for us. Hopefully, the weather cooperates. One of the buildings receiving a mural will be the dentist's office downtown at the corner of Groover Street and Gilmer Ferry Road. On this building, the team will need to use a lift which will require us to close the segment of Old Dawsonville Road between Groover St and Gilmer Ferry Road for most of the day on Friday, and all day Saturday and Sunday. The road will be open each evening after painting ends.
The second mural will be installed on the building that houses Perched and Barrel House Coffee, on the Mound Street side. The Mound Street “on street” parking spaces will be blocked off for the entire weekend to make for a safer staging area for our students as they work.
In other exciting news, our joint grant application with Cherokee County for development of the Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area was approved and is now in full design. This property is located near the bridge over the Etowah River on SR 372 heading towards Free Home from Ball Ground. This recreation area will include camp sites, archery ranges, preservation of historic sites, as well as fishing areas and kayak/canoe launch areas.
We have a young Eagle Scout Candidate that is prepared to begin work on another section of Roberts Lake Trail that will help us get the trail extended to downtown. We anticipate opening this segment of trail by mid-August.
Work will begin soon on renovations to the city park downtown – commonly referred to as the “Food Court” located between the Burger Bus and United Realty. We will be installing shade sails, new picnic tables, bistro tables, slate chips and other beautification measures to make the park a more attractive and inviting downtown space. Unfortunately we will need to take the park out of service for an estimated 12 days while certain work takes place, but it will remain open for the majority of the renovations.
Upcoming Important Dates:
April 8th – BBQ & Brews Festival Downtown Event time: Noon – 8:00 PM
April 26th – Touch a Truck – Join us in the community building parking lot – free snacks – and let the kiddos explore everything from excavators to police cars, Firetrucks to Bulldozers. 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM
April 29th – We will have 3 teams from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in the City from 12:00 – 3:00 PM at Calvin Farmer Park putting on a Stick Ball demonstration. In earlier days this “game” was played by the Cherokee in and around our City, and is how we became known as “Ball Ground”. This will be a great opportunity for residents and visitors alike to learn more about this sport and our history. The Georgia Swarm (Professional Lacrosse Team) is sponsoring the event and will be hosting “Indigenous Peoples Night” at Gas South Arena later that evening, and thanks to Universal Alloy Corporation free tickets will be available to residents who would like to attend the game that night. There will be a tent set up at the stick ball demonstration where residents can claim their free tickets to the Lacrosse match.

2023.03.22 21:49 Dismal-Jellyfish Why I am super bullish on the Cyber Crew Clone in Fortnite: sets the stage for a potential partnership? “Proceeds from sale of digital assets” go brrr in the future?
| Reposting as called out correctly the title was 'off' in the first post. A partnership has not been announced. I apologize for the original misleading headline and am still bullish on this concept. Good afternoon Superstonk, jellyfish here and wow there is a ton going on right now! GameStop tuned a profit with earnings yesterday, Dave Lauer shared the most important comment letter he's ever written, Credit Suisse is writing down 'gold standard' collateral, the SEC is looking to go digital, and Cyber Crew dropped this bomb: https://twitter.com/CYBERCREWNFT/status/1638603495879372800 Wow, own your own assets in Fortnite?!?!!?! That's a money printing press! How do we know? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Games_v._Apple Epic Games v. Apple is a lawsuit brought by Epic Games against Apple in August 2020 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, related to Apple's practices in the iOS App Store). Epic Games specifically had challenged Apple's restrictions on apps from having other in-app purchasing methods outside of the one offered by the App Store. Epic Games' founder Tim Sweeney) had previously challenged the 30% revenue cut that Apple takes on each purchase made in the App Store, and with their game Fortnite, wanted to either bypass Apple or have Apple take less of a cut. Epic implemented changes in Fortnite intentionally on August 13, 2020, to bypass the App Store payment system, prompting Apple to block the game from the App Store and leading to Epic filing its lawsuit. Apple filed a countersuit, asserting Epic purposely breached its terms of contract with Apple to goad it into action, and defended itself from Epic's suit. The trial ran from May 3 to May 24, 2021. In a September 2021 ruling in the first part of the case, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers decided in favor of Apple on nine of ten counts, but found against Apple on its anti-steering policies under the California Unfair Competition Law. Rogers prohibited Apple from stopping developers from informing users of other payment systems within apps. Epic has appealed the ruling. Epic also filed another lawsuit, Epic Games v. Google, the same day, which challenges Google's similar practices on the Google Play app store for Android), after Google pulled Fortnite following the update for similar reasons as Apple. However, Google has stressed that the legal situation around their case is not the same as around Apple's. From this kerfuffle we get: https://s3.documentcloud.org/documents/20696836/epic-apple-trial-epic-games-exhibit.pdf - Fortnite generated $5.1 billion revenue in 2020 for Epic Games
- Before it was banned, Fortnite made $1.1 billion in lifetime mobile revenue
- Fortnite has approximately 400 million registered players, 83 million play once a month
Fortnite annual revenue: Year | Revenue ($bln) | 2018 | $5.4 | 2019 | $3.7 | 2020 | $5.1 | Fortnite lifetime mobile revenue Year | Revenue ($mm) | 2018 | $100 | 2019 | $450 | 2020 | $1100 | Fortnite surpassed $1 billion in lifetime mobile revenue before being kicked off both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Fortnite registered users Year | Users (mm) | 2018 | 125 | 2019 | 250 | 2020 | 350 | Fortnite reached 350 million registered users in 2020. Fortnite monthly active players Year | Users (mm) | 2018 | 78.3 | 2019 | 75.5 | 2020 | 80.4 | Wow, 80.4 million users per month spending over a billion dollars per year on in game content they do not yet own... It would be great to tap into that, if only there was a market place for this, oh: In Europe, the Digital Markets Act will force Apple to allow third-party app marketplaces to exist on iPhone and iPad. If uncontested by Apple, the law could result in Apple enabling that functionality in the fall of 2023, though resistance from Apple could push a change into 2024. However, on December 13, reports surfaced claiming Apple is already working on changes to its software and services to comply with the rules, including enabling third-party app storefronts without going through the App Store itself. Such activity from Apple is likely to be a preparatory move rather than something that will actually be introduced. Given Apple's continued resistance to side-loading and alternative app marketplaces from security and privacy standpoints, it's also the option that Apple will resist from implementing as much as possible. Also this from the law suit: Apple won the antitrust suit, but was ordered to allow developers to add in-app links to outside websites where payments could be accepted. Could the in-app link to outside website be the GameStop NFT Marketplace? Why would Epic want to do this? First, it would save them from apple and google fees. Download the game in the store, then click a link to the marketplace to complete the transaction at an overall lower cost for everyone? Epic won’t ban NFT games in response to Minecraft’s stance, Tim Sweeney says: https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/epic-wont-ban-nft-games-in-response-to-minecrafts-stance-tim-sweeney-says/ It could help prevent regulatory burden: The Federal Trade Commission is ordering the makers of the popular video game "Fortnite" to pay a $245 million fine for tricking players and letting children make unauthorized purchases without their parent's consent. Fortnite’s counterintuitive, inconsistent, and confusing button configuration led players to incur unwanted charges based on the press of a single button," the FTC says. "The company also made it easy for children to make purchases while playing Fortnite without requiring any parental consent." "According to the FTC’s complaint, Epic also locked the accounts of customers who disputed unauthorized charges with their credit card companies," The NFT marketplace and GameStop wallet (in a multisig setup) can fix this or disputes from hopefully needing to occur. However, crypto payments also removes the interaction with the credit card companies. TLDRS: $81.9M in “Proceeds from sale of digital assets” All these assets potentially sold via the GameStop NFT Marketplace? Bullish on Proceeds from sale of digital assets! https://preview.redd.it/ry9dzlstycpa1.png?width=610&format=png&auto=webp&s=f24f5ff62aa11c9a22d494d5a4b34ee384bee91a submitted by Dismal-Jellyfish to Superstonk [link] [comments] |

2023.03.22 19:33 Doman-Ryler Alright y'all, how can I bring this home for a WC, OF?
2023.03.22 17:24 RetroHollz Interesting find with dialed numbers
This point of view and very interesting search result I would like to present to you below and I ask you for your opinion.
I have found the following phone number: national 04 234 40 17 (international +32 4 234 40 17)
It should be noted that the third digit was changed from "1" to "2" due to the restructuring of the telecommunications network in September 1996. With the exception of the fifth digit, the phone number matches the number dialed by JF. It is the best result found so far. If my assumption is correct that the location code 235 was extended by 234 as part of the restructuring, it should be exactly the number chosen by JF.
Another discovery: in Liège, Seraing, there is a second street called "Rue de la Station". It is located in the district "4420 Saint-Nicolas" - very close to Jemeppe.
The search query for this phone number at
https://www.whitepages.be produces the following result: Lucania F. 40 Rue de la Cité, 4420 Saint-Nicolas
This number is located on the corner of "Rue de la Station". Can that be a random thing?
https://www.google.de/maps/place/Rue+en+la+Cit%C3%A9+40,+4420+Saint-Nicolas,+Belgien/@50.6198989,5.5318551,70m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47c0f99cc2eeaf03:0x6df6824876096539!8m2!3d50.6197411!4d5.5321871?hl=en A search for the family name at sudinfo.be returned four results, three of them in Saint-Nicolas:
http://enmemoire.sudinfo.be/search/node/Lucania The "F." Lucania could be here according to the last entry for "Francesco". The family ad says (translation):
Mrs. Grazia PAVONE Widow of Francesco LUCANIA Died in Saint-Nicolas on 09 November 2015 at the age of 90 years Born on September 18, 1925 Published in the Liège edition of La Meuse Funeral home Dumont-Giltay
It's pure speculation, but did JF possibly live with her grandparents or make good contact with them? What do you think? I think we need to follow this trail and build a family tree.

Recent special elections have resulted in Democrats overperforming expectations by a ton! Between Dems getting things done while in power, and the GOP going in an increasingly scary direction, voters can tell which party is looking out for them. Now our job is to get every voter to show up, every election.
Besides our well-known
volunteer from home spreadsheet and weekly volunteer posts, we have some new initiatives to help you support Democrats across the country! Read on and sign up:
Introducing Campaign Central: a VoteDem VAN alternative project to help local campaigns organize! Running for office is a major undertaking, and like any great journey, the first step is often the hardest. Our goal at VoteDem is to lower that barrier by developing a campaigning tool we can
freely offer as a service to Democrats across the country. Campaign Central is a web-based platform that can load voter registration data, organize phone banking, text banking, canvassing, and much more! But to run this project, we need your help. We need volunteers to collect and upload voter registration data once per month (instructions provided), and a Python developer (preferably with experience using Odoo) to help build these tools.

Interested in helping us develop the program?
Send us a modmail describing relevant Python experience.
Adopt A Candidate is Returning! Yup - we are continuing our Adopt a Candidate operations. For the moment, we’re largely focusing on upcoming special elections until the primaries for the November elections are finished.
When you adopt a candidate, you commit to volunteering for them at least once a week - in person or from home. Your efforts now could make the difference as these races will likely be very close and have generally lower turnout!
If you’d like to adopt one of these candidates, reply in this thread or
send us a modmail. You can adopt a candidate not on this list if you wish, too. Just let us know!

We’re looking for graphic artists and folks that understand how to run social media! While we all like to jest that the mod team is able to do anything and everything, we have limitations. We are currently looking for individuals with knowledge and skill in creating Graphic Art as a way to further the community's image. Our main priority would be aiding in creating graphics
akin to the following design that we’ve used for AMA guests.
We are also looking for someone that is more knowledgeable in how to properly create a social media following/interact in the social media spaces to effectively operate them. The mod team is not particularly knowledgeable, nor do we have the time to properly utilize those tools.
If you are interested in volunteering forhelping with either position,
please send us a modmail and we will continue the conversation from that point. Note: neither of these positions are paid and would be done on a purely volunteer role.
Let’s make sure that the GOP knows the true power of grassroots action!

Chapter 13: Bohemian ———————————————————————————————————————
Memory transcription subject: Vekna, Venlil Investigative Journalist Date [standardized human time]: December 7th, 07:24, 2136 It’s a longer drive to the hangars than it was to the museum, mainly because of the “airfield’s” elevated position. From what I understood, this was to make it easier for show pilots to gain speed for their stunts. For us, however, it serves only as a hindrance for our Jeep to overcome.
Jeep, Jeep. Such a funny word. That’s what Chase calls his car. Well, technically, it’s the company that made his car. He explained that the name was derived from that of an ancient car that was used at the same time as those Tiger tanks. It even had a gas motor! Well, to be fair, most vehicles at that time did, but after growing up surrounded by fusion-electric engines and plasma thrusters, it was still breaking new ground for my engineering side.
I’m still brimming with excitement as we finally make it up to the airfield. I look out the window as it enters my line of vision. I’m sorely let down. Standing opposed to the grand spaceports of Venlil Prime, this place consists of a row of metal, semi-circular structures lining the side of a long, wide strip of concrete.
How plain… The data dump had said that most terran vehicles before 2047 didn’t have VTOL capabilities, so a long run of space to build sideways speed was necessary for their flight.
Function before form, I guess. Can’t complain about that. As we drive by the structures, I spot letters and numbers above the wide doors on each one. I assume they correspond to the planes inside, as I recognize a few of them. PBY-5, BF-109, YAK-15, and a few more that I didn’t care to read pass us by as we make our way down the strip of tarmac. Translators always did struggle with such naming conventions, but I’ve gotten used to it by now. Still, too many can give you a
terrible headache
. The one we come to a stop in front of, though, has a simple designation upon it; F-14. I tilt my head slightly. I don’t recall ever seeing an “F-14” on display, and if Chase had a model of it, it wasn’t one that I was allowed to touch. As we disembark from our trusty land vehicle, I have no idea what to expect.
That’s the most exciting part! As we approach a side door, Chase gives me a bit of history regarding this F-14. “This bad boy was pulled from active service after an air confrontation in the 1970s.” Chase began commenting, taking the familiar tone of museum guides the galaxy over. “The Pilot lived, his copilot didn’t, and it was inactive for the rest of the Cold War. Eventually, it got abandoned in a scrapyard for a century or so as part of the usual retirement of such craft. When the previous staff found her, she was apparently in pretty bad shape, but they managed to fix her up and get her airworthy again. She flew shows for the museum for about 20 years until the F-22s and F-45s were up and ready to go. Then it was back to the scrap heap for her. Or at least, that's what was
supposed to happen.” Chase winks at me, a human gesture meant to convey slyness or deception. Any other Venlil would have been horrified by that, but it goes without saying I’m not any other Venlil.
“I came across her a month or so after they sold her off and got pennies on the dollar!” My translator didn’t even attempt to make the currency conversion. “I’ve been keeping it here ever since. It’s in much better condition than at the scrapyard, and I intend to keep that way. I’ve made it my personal pet project to keep her ready to fly at a moment’s notice, but I haven’t had the chance to for a while. But we have time now! You wanna see?”
I don’t even need to talk to answer, my tail doing all the work for me.
I’m going to get a personal air show, of course I want to see! I can barely contain my excitement as we approach the access door. We soon reach it, Chase opening it slowly so as not to break the frostbitten hinges. It’s pitch black inside, with only the silhouette of a landing gear visible thanks to the limited morning light. It’s only when Chase flicks on the lights that I’m truly floored. In front of me stands a massive aircraft, sleek in design and wide in stature. The wings of the vehicle stretched for what must be tens of meters, with two massive jet turbine engines in the rear of the plane. Even its very aesthetic is almost predatory in nature, its elongated nose and thin physique almost reminding me of a Krakotl.
It's primitive but… brahk it, it’s beautiful! From what I can see, there are two seats in the cockpit, a thought forming in the back of my mind at that sight. Reason tells me otherwise, but…
what if I got to fly in this thing? I’m brought out of my mind by the loud thunk and the sound of liquid flowing. I look over to see Chase connecting the plane to a large metal tank.
Ah, that must be the fuel. “Fueling it up, Chase?”
“Yeah, what else? We can’t fly on an empty tank, after all!”
…We?! I nearly pass out as I realize my wildest hopes Are coming true.
I was going to get to fly in this thing!! It’s honestly hard to remember what happened between then and now as I’m being helped into the rearmost seat by Chase.
Something about safety checks, I think? Who cares?! I’M GOING TO FLY!! As I’m being strapped in, I notice something.
There are a sphekload of gauges, switches and buttons back here! I assumed they all had a purpose, but I remember Chase telling me that I wouldn’t need to press them at some point.
Thank the Herd, my translator is killing itself trying to translate all this! One thing I would have to just deal with is the seat not being built for someone with a tail, but that’s not too big a deal. If I’m remembering my physics correctly, most of the g-forces would be directed downwards, and given Venlilian skeletal structure, I should be a-okay.
Our only weak points are our knees! Eventually, Chase disconnects the fueling line once we have enough and he climbs into the cockpit, a special helmet on his head. I’m also wearing a similar helmet with a small microphone extended close to my snout. I have to keep my ears pressed against my head for it to fit, but an ear piece allows us to communicate freely. Chase opens the humongous hangar door with a remote, the entire front section of the massive building parting to admit us into the cool, Canadian air. Chase toggles something up front, as I soon hear the combustion-powered jet engines whine to life. It sounds almost like a malfunctioning fusion engine, but Chase assures me that sound is normal.
Did we say that? I can’t tell over the whining! Suddenly, I see something I didn’t even know this plane could do. The wings of the aircraft pull back like a bird before we start to taxi out to the start of the runway. The automated air traffic control system verbally informs us that we’re clear to go, with a set flight range for him to fly about within.
He extends the wings back out as he looks back at me. “Ready to have some fun, Vekna?”
OH BRAHK YES!!! I can’t help but give an excited bleat as my heart races in my chest. I’m glad that it’s from excitement this time, though Chase has given me my own inhaler in case a shortlung attack happens during the flight. I give a thumbs-up, another human gesture, as Chase grabs the throttle and pushes it all the way forward. I’m quickly pressed into the back of my seat as we quickly accelerate up to flight speed.
Okay, forgot about forward momentum! Readjusting tail! I can hear the usually whiny engines roaring through my headset, making it clear as to why I was given it in the first place despite my head shape. It only takes a few seconds before I feel the vehicle lifting up, the ground receding from view below us as I feel the landing gear pull in. This is incredible!
I’m flying! I’M FLYING!!! I can see the peaks of snowy mountains all around us as we fly higher and higher. I can’t help but giddily giggle at the thrill of this flight.
Hearing my excited chittering, it seems Chase gets an idea. “You like that, eh? Try this on for size!”
The entire planet then rolls along our plane’s central axis, and before I know it, the ground is above me. It’s a surreal sight, but before I can process it fully, I feel myself getting pushed down into my seat once again as we pitch down into a canyon.
Flying! In the air! Look at the ground speed past! I scream in joy a little as Chase masterfully maneuvers the aircraft so low to the ground I can practically
lick the snow! I was flying myself above the chasm! How can I even describe these feelings? These wonderful feelings that I would like to feel forever! They’re too great for words to possibly do justice!
Listen to yourself ramble! You’re flying!!! We continue doing tricks for an incredible while longer until we hear an alert in the cockpit. Chase looks over to the blinking red light, presses a button, and after a moment both sound and sight stop. He then says words that I never want to hear again. “Alright, looks like we’re low on fuel. I only filled her up enough for a short flight, anyways. Let’s get down and give this old bird a rest, eh?”
I don’t want to. I want to stay up here and keep flying where the realities of my existence can’t touch me! Where I am free from the bounds of the world! But, tragically, I’m not in control. I can only watch as we slow our airspeed, adjust our heading, and come in for a gentle landing. The gears screech in protest underneath us as they decelerate the plane to a stop, bringing an end to the best moment of my life.
It felt like the best kind of forever, but was …already over. We taxi back into the hangar, coming to a stop as Chase powers down the plane. It takes a while to go through the shutdown process, and I remain in the cockpit for most of it. Anything to allow me to replay the flight in my mind as many times as I can. Eventually, though, that too came to an end as Chase moved the ladder to retrieve me. I hold out my arms as he unbuckles me and lifts me out of the seat, removing my helmet lastly.
“So, how did you like all that, Vekna?”
I don’t have the words to express my enjoyment. I was in the air, away from all my problems and with one of the few people to have treated me like an actual person. I’m unfortunately reminded of my strife by this happy thought, and I come down from my flying high enough to respond.
“Y-Yeah, it was great! Can we do that again soon??”
He laughs as we sit on a bench in the hangar. I lean against him as he wipes the sweat from his brow from having cleaned and prepared the F-14 for another stint of inactivity.
“Sure, but how about we try another plane next time, yeah?”
Next time! I’m about to affirm when a loud alert sounds from Chase’s pad. He mutters something under his breath and checks what it is. Curiously, I look too. There’s a small, top-down silhouette of the airstrip in the middle with rings coming off of it. A ways away, a red dot is shown approaching. Unlike some of the other aircraft, each with their own designations above them, this one is unmarked. It isn’t heading towards us, but it is going in the direction of Vancouver. I don’t see anything particularly wrong with that, but Chase is a different story altogether. He says something about poop under his breath as he hastily stands and starts donning his winter gear once again. I’m left confused on the bench at Chase’s concern.
“Chase? What’s wrong? Why did that alert sound?”
He looks over at me as he’s getting dressed. His eyes are dilated far past their usual. Whatever he knows must be really scaring him.
What does that mean for me? “No transponder. I know what that means all too well. Black Ops”
Oh, that’s what that means for me.
Speh. ———————————————————————————————————————
Memory transcription subject: Elijah Morrisson, UN Pilot Ace Date [standardized human time]: December 7th, 05:00, 2136 I stand outside on the pad as I wait for the two bucketheads General Meiers assigned to this mission to arrive. I had already gotten the shuttle prepped for flight an hour ago, its Venlil-tech fusion engines purring like a contented cat. Though how a fusion engine can purr, I can’t begin to speculate. They didn’t have the most thrust, and were very civilian oriented, but I had to admit their lack of sound was useful for practical concealment, far outperforming the quietest craft we had that weren’t helicopters. It was a far departure from the F-55 I flew in the Satelite Wars, but that’s by design.
I kind of missed that old bird. I bet I could probably kick a rookie pilot’s ass in one if I were given the chance.
They think they’re all hotshots in their F/A-72s, pah! What was I going to do again? Oh, yeah, bitch about those good-for-nothing NCOs. I look at my watch, seeing that it’s already 05:02.
Where are they? As soon as I think that, I see the door to the pad’s gantryway open, flashing me with the blinding white fluorescent light from the airlock.
There they are! About damn time! I wave the pair down as they approach at a steady pace, careful not to slip on the ice coating the catwalk.
“Glad y’all could finally join me. Any longer and the general’d have us court-martialed!”
I receive a couple of groans from the two as they lug their bug-out bags into the cargo storage area. “Yeah, you try packing up all your shit without anyone noticing you’re going! We couldn’t even say we’re transferring even if we were asked! That secrecy takes a while.”
“I did. That ain’t no excuse for tardiness, Anderson. And what about you, Xhen? What took you so long?”
He stands quiet for a moment, looking between me and the backside of Anderson as he struggles to get his oversized bag to fit in the cramped personal cargo compartments. He soon succeeds, patting the compressed luggage pridefully before turning back to me.
“Waiting for Lieutenant Anderson, sir!”
I can’t help but laugh at that, earning me a scornful look from the now-standing lieutenant.
“
Ah hah. Ah hah hah. Let’s just get going before we’re caught and tried for treason or some other trumped-up charge.”
Xhen and I both salute our current commanding officer as we load into the shuttle. Thankfully, there are four seats up front. Anderson taking the co-pilot position and Xhen taking the co-pilot-passenger position behind him. We strap in, and I ready the shuttle for flight. Unlike the fighters I was used to flying pre-contact, this shuttle did almost everything for me including flying the damn thing, and I could still make it do that, too! Once we were firmly in the air, I could set autopilot and comfortably do whatever while in route.
Those Venlil pilots must be some spoiled sons-of-bitches. After making sure everybody is strapped in, I activate the VTOL functionality as we quickly rise above the treeline.
The two boots gripped their seats in fear.
Heh, I forgot that they didn’t have their sky-legs yet! Well, who was I to deny them their first proper Morrisson flight experience? I shove the throttle forward and switch to frontal propulsion. The shuttle lurches forward, quickly surpassing the sound barrier with a passing boom. Once we’re supercruising, I slip the shuttle into autopilot and lean back, the other two still scared stiff from our departure.
Calm down you babies, I hope that once we arrive, we won’t have to stay for long. I wanna be home in time for Christmas, dammit! But…I can’t cover up my grievances with jokes forever. Besides, I might Jinx it if I say it aloud.
“Some warning next time would be nice, Morrison!” I hear Anderson sputter next to me.
I just chuckle a little and turn my flight seat towards him. “I thought you had flight experience too, Lieutenant! What, can’t handle a little jolt?”
“That was more than a little jolt, Morrisson! If you’re going to keep flying like a crackhead, I’m going to take those controls from you and fly us all there myself!”
I chuckle at that as I prepare one of my signature Air Force quips. “Good luck with that! You can barely find your own flight stick!” At that, he gives me a side eye that could level mountains.
Mountains, maybe, but not me. “You’re lucky we’re stuck in this suicide squad together, or I’d have you dishonorably discharged for that.” Xhen snickers behind him. “I’m not- you know what? Screw you guys. I’m going to go to the back and finish my night’s rest.” He then unbuckles himself from his seat and makes his way to the back of the shuttle. I watch to see if Xhen will follow suit, and sure enough, he also yawns.
I sigh, deciding that he needs his rest too. “You sleepy, private?”
He snaps to attention, though there’s a noticeable lag to his actions. “No sir! Just recovering from the unexpected awa-”
“Just go. Only two people are required in the cockpit at all times. With how advanced this computer is, I’d count it as one. You’re dismissed.”
Xhen blinks at me in confusion. “So…I can go to sleep?”
Oh for God’s sake, these privates. “I said dismissed!”
I turn back around to face forward, hearing Xen hurriedly march into the back of the shuttle behind me.
Which leaves me alone. Again... With nothing to do but wait, my mind turns to Vekna. I don’t know why she ran, and I don’t know where she went. If Beech has her, I’m going to do what I should’ve done years ago. I’m going to complete my mission, I’m going to get some answers, and I’m going to find that damn Venlil, whether she wants me to or not.
I’m coming, Vekna, and hell nor high water's gona fuckin’ stop me. … Oh Lord, when did I get so dramatic? ———————————————————————————————————————

It's been a while since one of these footers, hasn't it? Well, that's because there's some news to share! If you followed this story in the MCP, you'd know that this is where it previously ended. But no more! In the works are two extra chapters for you all on Reddit, along with an exciting announcement or two under the last chapter! I won't spoil anything now, but I'd just like to say that I'm incredibly excited for the future of the Rouge Chronicles and the NOPCU as a whole! Thank you all for reading, and I look forward to sharing the next chapter as soon as it's complete!

Welcome new readers. Please start with chapter one
https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/11ai7iv/last_of_the_defenders_ch_01/ Previously
https://www.reddit.com/HFY/comments/11xe5m5/last_of_the_defenders_ch_27/ “I‘ve always been better able to swallow bad news with a good meal,” Li said as she walked around a counter and began rifling through a tall metal closet. She pulled out two wrapped bags. "Sadly, we’ll have to settle for this excrement."
Allah took the bags when offered, and a pair of bowls. Li grabbed another tiny spade, this one with a jagged edge. She opened her mouth, blowing on the
spork and rubbed it on her forearm. She stepped to a cupboard and set a cup inside. “Dispense 2.5 liters of water at 343 Kelvin, Demeter.”
Steaming hot water filled the tall glass. Li placed a second under inside the cupboard, “Repeat command, Demeter,” and the second glass filled.
She walked to the bench opposite Allah and set the glasses down. “It's hot so be careful,” Li cautioned, tearing open the smaller pouch. She poured its contents inside Allah’s bowl, “Veggie broth number one for the sick kitty,” and Allah poured the glass of hot water in as well. It looked, as the powder started to disperse into the water, like settling silt, “And soy chicken chunks with almond cheese spread for me--yum yum!” she grimaced, as she pulled out three packets. She held the smallest of the three aloft. “But I do get a cookie.”
Allah sniffed the broth, remembering to bless the meal with “Xièxiè nǐ de zhōngwén shíwù” before sipping slowly. It was weak, bland, but it was warm. She had contented herself with a few sips of water during the quorum and her belly now demanded more.
Li stabbed her spade into Allah’s glass, stirring vigorously, “Sorry,” the human said, “but look on the bright side. This time tomorrow,” she ripped off the top of the largest pouch and Allah’s nose was assaulted with a smell that could only be described as “artificial”, “you should be well enough to sample
this culinary delight.”
“I think I would prefer the broth,” and she took another sip. It did taste better when the silt was mixed. Li chuckled, pouring half her water into the large bag and ripped open another. That smelled even worse as a brown powder puffed free when water was applied. Li stirred the contents of both vigorously before pouring the orangey brown “cheese” into the freeze dried soy chicken substitute, and spooning both into her own bowl.
The human took a bite as Allah hid a wince behind another sip. Li chewed woodenly, swallowed and said “Not bad for a fifty year shelf life,” and dug back into the packets, searching. “If I know those pesky anglos--Ah ha!” She pulled out the tiniest pouch yet, ripped off the top and a smell Allah could only describe as tamed fire struck her nostrils as the human squeezed red liquid into her meal. “Hot sauce!” Li grinned and took another bite, nodding, “but I should’ve saved it for the cookie.”
Allah nodded acceptance of the tip and finished her broth.
“Want some more?” Li asked as she chewed.
“I would be honored by such a gift,” Allah nodded her head up and down, imitating the human response. Though, truth told fully, she was not so certain she would feel as honored by a second bowl.
Li did not get up, but instead pointed at the packet the broth had been contained in. “See those symbols?” Allah nodded, committing the human glyphs to memory. “Go find a matching pouch.”
Allah stood, sniffing and walked cautiously behind the counter. She used her claws to pop the metal closets open, gasping at the rush of cold air. Frozen air; cold as a warm winter day. She looked over her shoulder at Li, then carefully riffled through the icey box.
Several had similar glyphs as her pouch, but they were too big, the glyphs in the wrong order.
She opened another box, finding small packets of the right size but…wrong glyphs. Was the trough before the broken box with a line in its center or after. The two tails with a dash in the center had sat next to each other, she was certain…
“Need help?” Li called from the table.
“I will find it,” Allah called, “thank you for the offer.” There! Two curved tails with a dash in their middle. The trough
was before the broken box. She pulled the packet out, returning to the table with tight lips.
Li, nodded. “Good. Now,” she lifted Allah’s glass to her. “Do you remember the temperature I gave Demeter?”
“Too poin’tah f’eye’vah Li’tours,” Allah fumbled with the words.
“That's the volume,” Li corrected. “But you need both. The temperature was three hundred forty three degrees Kelvin. You try.”
T-ta-ta’ree hun der red f’or--bach! Ta’ree hun’red f’ord’ee ta’ree da’ggg’ree Kah’el vine,” then grumbled "It feels like I am speaking with a rock in my throat!"
Li shrugged, “Welcome to English 101. Pop quiz,” she pointed to the hole in the wall. “Is to get our dim host over there to supply you with some fresh, hot water.”
Li continued eating as Allah took her glass to the square hole. She inspected the hole, saw a metal nipple sticking from its top. She placed the glass directly under and began to practice.
“Dimetar! Too poin’tah f’eye’vah Li’tours va’tour. Ta’ree hun’red f’ord’ee ta’ree da’ggg’ree Kah’el vine”
“Command not recognised,” the cheerful voice replied, translated by her metal implant. “Please restate.”
Allah sighed, bit her lip and tried again. And again. Each time, Li offered hints, coaching and encouragement. Try breaking each command down, see where he misunderstood. Enunciate, don’t growl the ‘guh’ sound.
“Dimetar?
“Yes, User Allah?”
“Too poin’tah f’eye’veh Li’tours wah tour.”
“Please specify desired temperature.”
“Ta’ree hund’red fort ee ta’ree da’gah’reez Kah’el vine.”
And water poured into the glass.
Allah took her prize in her paws and returned to the table. She set it down and beamed at Li. Then clapped her paws together so sharply that the human jerked back. Allah rushed back behind the counter, grabbed her own spork and returned to sit, panting onto the tiny jagged spade before rubbing it on her forearm.
“Proud of yourself?”
“Yes,” Allah puffed out her chest and twitched her tail as she sliced the packet open with a claw. For the first time in two days, she fed herself.
“Good,” Li spooned the last of her fake chicken and cheese into her mouth, opening the cookie. “I plan to teach you some basic commands to use if you need Demeter to help you when I’m not around. How’s that sound?"
Allah lowered her bowl and licked her lips with a small bow. “I will strive to be a worthy student.”
Li clapped her hands together, rubbing them furiously. “Then let's start with some ABCs,” but no sooner had the enthusiasm leapt to her face, it vanished.
Allah lowered her bowl in mild alarm.
Li held up a hand, her human face squishing in confusion. “Jung’s hailing me. Priority transmission. One sec,” and her eyes glassed over.
And just as quickly the human’s eyes widened in alarm “What!?!” Li stood up from the bench, jostling the table. “No, n-no. Hold it.” She looked at Allah, glowering. “Jung, repeat that last aloud.”
The AI’s voice spoke from the wall speaker “Li, these are confidential orders. I don’t like keeping secrets any more than you do--”
“It directly concerns her, Jung,” Li growled.
“Very well,” and the AI’s voice sounded resigned as he said “Stardancer and her assigned personnel are hereby ordered to leave OGLE-3219-BLG-2624L with all available haste and set course for the supply depot above Basker III. Shipboard AI is required to reconfirm receipt of message once personnel have digitally signed the read receipt.”
“And I’ll mate a
monkey before I sign
excrement! And neither are you, buckethead!”
“Li,” Jung soothed, “you must understand, this is a fleet command order. I am incapable of refusing such an order. If you fail to acknowledge receipt, they will ask me if it was delivered. I would be incapable of dissemination.”
“Tell them the transmission was garbled,” she countered.
“What does this mean?” Allah asked, growing alarm blossoming into new panic.
“That will not work as I have already sent my own read receipt,” Jung replied.
“Why the mate did you do that?”
“I was ordered to via direct transmission.”
“What does this mean?” Allah forced the distressed purring to stop. She would not shake herself to uselessness. "Li, Jung, what has happened?”
“They’re calling us home!” Li rounded and slammed her fists on the counter. “Without any notice of a reinforcement team.”
The human turned, a wild savagery in her dark eyes as she turned to look at Allah. The U’knock stood slowly but refused to back away in fear.
When Li spoke, spittle flew from her clenched teeth.
“We are not just leaving these people to die.”
“I empathize, Li,” Jung’s tone was soft, comforting. All Allah knew was that her world was about to die. No tone could comfort that grief. “But our orders are clear,” he continued. “If you disobey, they may begin sending instructions to Demeter to forcibly remove you.”
“Alright, alright.” Li took several calming breaths, in through her tiny nose and out through her mouth. “Alright,” and her voice retained a false calm. “Jung? Request reconfirmation on my authority. Ask them why they’re ignoring a Case Alamo.”
“I can send it immediately,” the AI replied
“You’ll send in a second,” she took another calming breath before saying “And Jung? Send it in the clear.”
“
That,” Jung’s voice was flat to the point of refusal, “is a violation of Secure Communication Protocol 23.9, section A, and a court-martial offense, Corporal Zhōu.”
“On my authority as acting ground forces commander of,” she paused and looked at Allah, “did your people ever name this planet?”
Allah nodded “U’dam,” she answered.
“Ground forces commander of U’dam. Note your protest, Jung, and confirm when you send the message.
“Noted,” but the AI sounded reluctant. “Sent.”
“Now,” she rubbed her face with her hands, “cut yourself out of the local circuit; I’ll call you back.”
“Li,” Jung protested.
“
Now Jung.”
There was a pause of heartbeats before the AI softly said “Complying.”
Li strode to a black panel on the mess hall wall. “Demeter, PDF override. Create a new partition in primary through tertiary data cores.”
“Building partitions. What file size do you require?”
“How large is your current Operating System size?”
“Demeter-907OS is currently utilizing 8.87693 yottabytes.”
“Make the partitions 9 yottabytes each.”
“Stand by,” the wooden voice replied. “Processing.
“Partitions complete.”
“Clone core OS to new partitions and label them as BACKUP ONE.”
“Cloning,” Li was bouncing back and forth on the balls of her feet; in excitement, renewed anger or impatience Allah was uncertain. “Files copied.”
“Run a scan against current OS and repair any anomalous files.”
“File check complete,” Demeter replied as Li growled a hushed “Comeon!” at the black panel. “Three thousand, one hundred and eight errors repaired across all copies.”
“Seal partitions labeled BACKUP ONE under Administrator Zhōu, Li, Corporal. Serial Service Number 218-08-986-42.”
“Files sealed. Private login access required for BACKUP ONE on primary core, secondary core and tertiary core. Would you like to open these files?”
"Now,” Li growled, shaking her arms like pieces of rope, “time to mate some excrement up. Demeter, access all thermopylae command files.”
“Accessing,” the wooden voice replied.
“Open program labeled ‘Naughty Boy’,” she ordered.
“Ope--Warning! Virus detected! Administrati--
“Authorization Zhōu, Li, Corporal! Serial Service Number 218-08-986-42,” Li shouted as a shrill alarm sounded. She slapped her palm against the black panel on the wall “Open ‘Naughty Boy’. PDF override authority!"
“Opeeeeeeee--” Demeter began, but the wooden voice hung. The speaker chirped, hiccuped and was silent. The mess hall lights flickered.
Li sighed, sitting back down on the nearest bench. “Thank you Sven,” she whispered.
“What has happened?” Allah asked. “What have you done to Demeter?”
“Hopefully,” Li forced a grin and patted the bench beside her. Allah came to sit next to her friend, “I’ve removed his ability to accept command instructions from offworld. Which sucks because that means Jung can’t interface directly via the comms until we establish a hard line connection.
“Demeter?” she called to the open air.
“Y-y-yes Administrator Li?”
“Contact Star Dancer.”
“N-n-no user found b-b-by that name.”
Li closed her eyes in thought. “Try AI Jung, or TSN-1337."
“User founnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd. Establishing c-c-connection.”
“What is wrong with him?” the lights flickered again. Li rose from the bench, pausing to pat Allah’s thigh, and walked to a white box opposite the counter. She opened it, pulling a thin package out. Ripping one end loose, she pulled a pair of green sticks out, tossing one to the U’knock.
Li bent her stick, shaking vigorously. It began to glow a soft green.
“Naughty Boy,” the human explained, “was based off of swarmer code the Star Dancer’s tech wizard acquired. It was originally written to strip local computer cores of higher thinking capability,” she gestured to the dark hallway. ”We should get moving.”
“Sven,” Allah asked, holding her own glowing stick above her head, “He was a friend of yours and Jung?”
Li’s head bobbed in agreement. “Our boy Sven retooled it to block external intrusion attempts--hostile or friendly. Never got it to work perfectly though. He always called it his ‘kitchen sink’ program; a last ditch effort to control an OS.”
“Is that why you told Jung to go away?” Li nodded again. “What would it do to him if he had not?” and silently Allah worried
What could it do if he returned? “Hopefully nothing,” Li answered, "Jung’s too smart to catch a cold,” and she smiled as she looked over her shoulder, “but there was no point in taking a chance.”
“Li?” an anxious voice called “Are you receiving?” the AI’s voice sounded strained, distant. Allah had played with other cubs near a culvert many times, calling to each other from different ends of the tube. Jung sounded like that now.
“I hear you Jung,” Li replied. “I was starting to worry.”
"Demeter has been spamming my firewall with unhealthy requests,” Jung explained. “I had to find a clean port.” His tone grew stern as he said “I have also lost communications with the fleet network. With Demeter’s behavior, I suspect I know why.”
“That information is ‘compartmentalized’,” Li grinned.
“I appreciate your attempts to protect me,” though Jung’s voice was anything but appreciative, “but you must understand this is a stop gap measure, at best. If you intend to continue requesting fleet assistance we will have to restore long range communication and they will, in turn, repeat their order.”
“Let tomorrow's worries worry tomorrow,” Li entered the room they had sent the mayday from. “What's your ETA?”
“Ram scoops at optimal angles, reactor mass at 60% of recommended capacity,” Jung sounded more distant still, as if talking next to a runoff stream, “I’ve begun suctioning the planet’s atmosphere and should be at safe slingtravel capacity in six hours, four minutes and twenty one seconds. I should be planetside in seven hours, fifty three minutes and nine seconds.”
Li took her seat at the monitor, tapping the screen on. “How long will it take to top off the tanks? I mean cutting out all safeties and max out pressure in your tanks.”
Jung hesitated.
“Seventeen hours, one minute and fourteen seconds, approximately,” he said so quietly that the noise of the connection almost drowned him out. “That assumes I would take such a risk.”
“Jung,” Li set her hands in her lap, looking up, “I know its a big ask--”
“Overriding safety protocols, Corporal Zhōu,” Jung interrupted angrily. The tone startled Allah. Jung didn’t
get angry. Even when they had fought in the CNC and later in the Star Dancer’s mess, he had remained calm. “Rescheduling for high vector mass transport. Please be aware, traveling with such volatile materials
will affect my time to return.
Li’s tone was soft now. “Revised ETA RTB?”
“Approximately two days dependant on U’dam weather patterns and celestial body avoidance routes,” he said resignedly.
Li winced. “That's cutting it close.”
“I would not complain if I were in your shoes,” Jung’s tone was acidic.
“If only you/I had any feet,” Li and Jung said together. The human smiled. Jung continued “You won't have remote access to Demeter until I’m on the surface,” he cautioned.
“I'll try to behave,” she patted the black screen affectionately. “Get back here as quick as you can, old man.”
“Stay safe down there, meatbag.”
And the speaker clicked dead.

2023.03.21 22:10 starfomder A Summary of President Benjamin Franklin's Term (1784-1788) u/starfomder's Alternate Elections
| Benjamin Franklin, 1st President of the United States Administration: Vice President: John Adams Secretary of State: Thomas Jefferson (resigned in 1787 after forming the Democratic-Republican Party) Timothy Pickering (appointed to replace Jefferson in 1787) Secretary of the Treasury: Alexander Hamilton Secretary of War: Henry Knox Secretary of the Navy: John Paul Jones (Appointed in 1787 after the department was created) Attorney General: Edmund Randolph President Franklin would create the 1st Presidential cabinet. He made the cabinet bi-partisan, including Thomas Jefferson, an opponent of the Federalists as Secretary of State. For the position of Secretary of the Treasury he chose Alexander Hamilton, a Federalist leader. For Secretary of War he chose Henry Knox, a veteran of the American Revolution. For Attorney General he chose Edmund Randolph. In 1787, the department of Navy was formed, and John Paul Jones would be appointed as secretary. Jones had planned to join the Russian navy until he was offered the position of Secretary of Navy. He decided to accept and oversee the US Navy. Jones has not aligned with anyone or any parties. Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury Domestic Policy: -Congress would decide tariffs will be used to generate revenue. However, there would be disagreement because each region wished for favorable terms. Congress was eventually able to pass the Tariff of 1784, with Franklin signing it. -In order to repay debts states had incurred in the Revolutionary War, Secretary Alexander Hamilton created a proposal for the government to assume state debt. -Meanwhile, the new capital for the United States has been debated on. James Madison and Alexander Hamilton met to make a compromise, with Madison to support Hamilton’s state debt proposal and for the capital to be built on the Potomac. -Secretary Hamilton would start making a plan after congress directed him to. He prepared an economic plan after his debt proposal passed, in which he would call for such things as the establishment of the National Bank and excise taxes. -Hamilton’s National Bank proposal was quickly pushed through Congress, as the Bank Bill of 1786. Anti-Administration leader James Madison and Attorney General Edmund Randolph would be among those opposing the bill, decrying it as an unconstitutional extension of the Federal Government's power and lobbied President Franklin to veto it. However, Hamilton successfully argued for the bill and got President Franklin, who has already begun going closer to Hamilton and his ideas, to sign the bill. -Hamilton would start promoting excise taxes on Alcohol, and the Whiskey Act of 1786 would be passed. This also had some support from some people, called social reformers. The tax would cause unrest among western farmers, who have begun resisting. -The next year, Congress passed the Coinage Act of 1787 establishing the United States Mint and the United States dollar. -Early in Franklin’s term, the Bill of Rights was ratified by the states, adding 10 amendments to the constitution. -President Franklin, working with Pennsylvanian abolitionists, would attempt to push the abolition of slavery throughout his Presidency. Congress would debate heavily, with abolitionists in Congress supporting abolishment. Ultimately however, Congress decided not to vote on any of these proposals in fear of too much division. -In 1787, Kentucky was admitted into the Union as a state. Foreign Policy: -While America had defeated the British and had gained independence, there would be unresolved matters such as the problems of sailor impressment. President Franklin would appoint Thomas Pinckney, the former Governor of South Carolina, as Minister to Great Britain in 1785. In a victory for America, Pinckney and the British made a deal, known as the 1786 Pinckney-Britain Deal, to end impressment and release American sailors. However, Pinckney was unable to get Britain to relinquish the forts in the Northwest Territory. Pinckney has garnered popularity despite that. -In relation, a war over control of the Northwest Territory has been occurring since before Benjamin Franklin’s election. Known as the Northwest Indian War, American forces and the Northwestern Confederacy, made up of Native nations, have fought for control beginning in 1780. The US had been granted the territory in the 1777 Treaty of Paris, yet the British have continued their military presence. American settlers would after the acquisition begin migrating west to settle the lands, which would be met with resistance from the Native Americans. They organized into the Northwestern Confederacy, and the British would continue to support their Native allies. With Franklin becoming President, Secretary of War Henry Knox has been helping to fight for American control. After several defeats, Franklin has tasked Revolutionary War veteran Anthony Wayne to train the troops. -Meanwhile, relations with Spain has also been less than good. Spain had gained the British territories of West Florida and East Florida after the end of the American Revolution. The Floridas had remained loyal to Britain, and would come to be safe havens for tories/loyalists during the Revolution. After Spain invaded West Florida, Britain which was defeated in the revolution would cede the territories to Spain. Disagreements between the US and Spain have arisen, about the border between the US and Spain with Spain claiming parts of Georgia. Thomas Pinckney, who had made a treaty with Britain, has been appointed as a diplomat to Spain, near the end of Franklin’s term in office. -Also near the end of Franklin’s term, he would decide to form a navy department in the cabinet and start building a stronger standing navy. Thomas Pinckney, noted for his diplomatic work Supreme Court appointments: President Franklin would be tasked with creating the Supreme Court. He chose John Jay, who is noted for being a diplomat as well as one of the 3 authors of the Federalist Papers, as the Chief Justice. After the Chief Justice, Franklin appointed the rest of the Supreme Court Justices. The appointed Justices are as follows: John Rutledge, William Cushing, James Wilson, John Blair Jr., and Robert Harrison. All Federalists. -Over a year later, Justice John Rutledge resigned to become chief justice of the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas and Sessions. James Iredell was then nominated to replace Rutledge and was confirmed. Rise of Political Parties and the upcoming election: With the 1787 election approaching, Benjamin Franklin would have to decide to run for re-election or not. After careful consideration, taking into account his age of 81, he decided to step down. After the midterms in 1785-1786, Jefferson, in increasing hostility to Hamilton, would officially form the Democratic-Republican Party and will run as its nominee for the Presidency in the 1787 Election. The Federalist Party, which has also officially formed, has created a plan for a National Convention, where Federalist delegates will meet to cast votes on the Presidential and Vice Presidential nominees. 2023.03.21 22:01 BamaLover4life Executive Positions at a potential combined WBD-NBCU company
So here’s the deal: I think that Frances Berwick who is currently the chairman of entertainment networks at NBCU (which includes NBC, Bravo, USA, SYFY, E!, Oxygen and Universal Kids) would add oversight of all of Warner Bros Discovery’s cable networks (including Discovery Channel, TLC, HGTV, Food Network, Science Channel, Travel Channel, Magnolia Network, Motor Trend, Investigation Discovery, OWN, TBS, TNT, TruTV, TCM, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang) with the exception of HBO and TCM which would be put under the purview of HBO head Casey Bloys who would become Chairman, CEO and Chief Content Officer for HBO, with Bloys reporting directly to CEO Jeff Shell. Sarah Aubrey who is HBO Max’s head of original content, would become co-Chief content officer of HBO, sharing the position with Bloys, whom she will report to. Aubrey would also serve as head of scripted content for peacock, reporting to Susan Rovner. This means she would become Chairman of US Networks for Discovery NBCU. Casey Bloys would stay on as head of HBO but would report to Mark Lazarus instead of Berwick. Cartoon Network President Michael Oulween would also add programming oversight of Universal Kids Temporarily until the channel shuts down. Oulween would also oversee kids and family content for peacock. Jason Sarlanis who oversees the T-Nets as well as HLN and Investigation Discovery and Howard Lee who oversees the D-Nets and TLC would leave the combined Company as their roles would be redundant. Sarlanis and Lee’s roles would be assumed by Berwick. Pola Changon, who oversees TCM, would report directly to Casey Bloys as the Channel would be put under the HBO group. WBD US Networks Chairman and CCO Kathleen Finch would also leave the company.
Susan Rovner who is the chairman of entertainment content for NBCU television and streaming would also add oversight for creative strategy for original entertainment for all of WBD’s cable networks (with the exception of HBO, which will be continued to be run by Casey Bloys and Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult swim, which will be continued to be led by Michael Ouwleen, as well as TCM, which will be continued to be led by Pola Changnon). She would also lead content for the combined HBO Max-Discovery+-Peacock streaming service (which would continue to have the peacock name). All of them would report to Mark Lazarus will be Chairman of Discovery NBCU television and streaming as would NBC News head Cesar conde. Rashida Jones is president of MSNBC would continue to report to Conde as would CNBC president KC Sullivan and Telemundo Chairman Beau Ferrari. Now here’s an interesting one. Corie Henson who is currently executive vp of entertainment unscripted content for NBCU Tv and streaming where she oversees reality programming for all NBCU’s of cable networks and streaming service Peacock, would also now oversee all unscripted content for the now former WBD Networks. In addition, Henson would also become President for the D-Nets, TLC, HGTV and Food Network with Henson overseeing all aspects of Discovery Channel, Travel Channel, Science Channel, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery, HGTV, TLC and Food Network including programming and development alongside Susan Rovner in addition to her new role as EVP, unscripted content, Discovery NBCU taking some pressure off Berwick. Henson would also absorb Rod Aissa’s role of oversight for unscripted lifestyle and documentary programming in addition to her current role overseeing reality and talent completion and game show programming, meaning she would oversee all types of unscripted programming for the company. Aissa would leave the company as a result. So, Henson’s position would be, EVP, unscripted content, Discovery NBCU television and streaming, and president, D-Nets, TLC, HGTV, and Food Network, reporting to both Berwick and Rovner. Betsy Ayala and Loren Ruch, who oversee Food Network and HGTV respectively would stay on and report to Henson. For streaming JB Perrette, who serves as CEO of Global streaming and Games, would leave the company, and be replaced by NBCU direct to consumer and international chairman Matt Strauss who would also replace Gerhard Zeiler as international chief. Strauss’ new position would Chairman and CEO of streaming and international networks, Discovery NBCU, where he would oversee the non-Sky international networks reporting to both Mark Lazarus and Sky Group CEO Dana Strong. Kelly Campbell would stay on President of Streaming and Direct to Consumer for Discovery NBCU. Lisa Katz, who oversees scripted content for all NBCU’s broadcast and tv networks and the peacock streaming service, would also now oversee all scripted programming across all WBD cable networks (with the exception of HBO of course). Katie Hockmeyer, who oversees late night programming for NBC as EVP of Late night would now add oversight of all late-night programming across of the cable network portfolio as well as peacock, including Bravo and HBO, which include shows like Watch what happens live, Real time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. Hockmeyer would report to both Frances Berwick and Casey Bloys. Jen Neal, EVP, Live Events, NBCUniversal Television & Streaming, would now oversee live events for all former WBD Networks (except HBO). Alex Wellen, Global President, and General Manager for Motor Trend Group would report to Casey Bloys as the entire Motor Trend group would also be put under the HBO Umbrella. So, Casey Bloys’ HBO unit would consist of HBO and its sister networks, TCM, Magnolia Network and Motor Trend. NBC Sports and WBD Sports would be merged into one company keeping the NBC Sports name with NBC Sports Chairman Pete Bevacqua becoming Chairman and CEO of Discovery NBCU Sports. All would report to Mark Lazarus who would be Chairman Networks and streaming at Discovery NBCU.
Warner Universal Pictures would be led by Donna Langley as Chairwoman, with Peter Cramer becoming chairman of Universal Studios, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy becoming Co-CEOs of Warner Bros Entertainment, James Gunn and Peter Safran remaining as Co-CEOs of DC Studios, and Peter Kujawski continuing as chairman of focus features. Margie Cohn would stay on as president of DreamWorks Animation which will merge with Warner animation group and Chris Meledandri will stay on as CEO of Illumination. All would report to Langley.
Discovery NBCU content studios would be the television unit for the combined company. The division would keep the Warner Bros Television and Universal Television and Universal Content Productions names like how Disney keeps ABC Signature and 20th television names. The combined group would be led by Universal studio group chairman Pearlena Igbokwe with Universal Television president Erin Underhill, Warner Bros Television Group Chairwoman Channing Dungy and President Brett Paul and Universal Content production president Beatrice Springborn all reporting to Igbokwe. Warner Bros Domestic Television Distribution and NBCUniversal Syndication Studios would be merged to create Discovery NBCU syndication studios, which would serve as the broadcast and cable syndication and television distribution unit of Discovery NBCU studios. Tracie Wilson, who currently serves as Executive Vice President, NBCUniversal Syndication Studios & E! News, would become president of discovery NBCU syndication studios and E! News. The combined arm would have a variety of first run syndicated shows including Maury, Jerry Springer, Extra, Access Hollywood, the Steve Wilkos Show, Judge Mathis, the Ellen degeneres show, the Jennifer Hudson show, the people’s court, the Kelly Clarkson Show and more. 2023.03.21 20:55 SeeTheSeaInUDP Choose a number - get introduced to 80s - 90s Kpop!
DRAFT
Here I am again LOL. Some of y'all might remember that I had done a game almost a year ago for first gen Kpop acts, but because I have expanded some of my horizons to a time that predates first gen, and which is super unique and cool in it's own right, I've decide to come back to do a similar game, but for the late 80s - mid 90s era! That era was marked by a young democratic Korea and a society basically re-inventing and rediscovering itself. I'll be basically looking from 1985 (and maybe a little before that, so maybe maximum 1981) to music in 1995.
I will actually not just be talking about music, but also a little bit of pop culture - actors, models, events, fashion trends,... but I promise, it's going to be majority music LOL.
Game goes as simple as follows :
- 1.Take the number of members your favourite group has (if you can't decide on a fave, choose the groups whose song you listened last). Will be referred to as "your group".
- 2. Go down and choose the number in the list. Then go to the letter the number takes you to. Choose one from a few choices. Might be a song, an artist, a show, a scenario, or just simply a fun fact.
- 3. Because I'm curious, comment down below what you got!
Here we Go! Have fun time-travelling!
---
(3).
You're walking around Hongdae, and you hear a real killer rock riff played by one of the street bands. The rock scene is flourishing, y'know. Which song is it? Go to (H) (4.)
You have 5000 won, and picked up a "Best Of" Album at a music store , but the artist's name is not written on the cover. Whose "Best Of" Album is it? Go to (F) (5).
It's 1981. You notice a music store owner putting out trash bags full of albums on the street. You ask him why, and he answers that these albums are by artists who are on the "ban list" of the current military dictatorship. But since you asked, you can pick one from them. Which one are you picking? Go to (C) (6).
You come across a little shop selling tickets to various music events. You have some money left, so you decide to buy one. Which one are you buying? Go to D (7). Go to (E)
(8).
You find a gift coupon for the Seoul Department Store (서울백화점) on the road! What are you going to buy with it? Go to (G) (9).
You have 2000 won, and bought a random album at the music store with it. It's a "Gayo Compilation Album". What songs are on there? Go to (B) (10). Go to (A)
(11).
You are walking around Seoul, when you notice film cameras and lights on the streets, with some staff members clearing anything in front of them. You deduce you are about to be part of a TV drama! Where are you, and which one is it? Go to (J) (12). Go to (B)
(13).
You want to attend a music show, KBS's Gayo Top Ten. Too bad that it's not in KBS's Studio this week! Where is it? Go to (I) ________________________________________

You go to the store and show the reception desk your coupon. The lady at the desk asks you if you want a "twin cake". Well, what is a "twin cake"? Is it... - A sweet condiment : Wrong! With your coupon,
- A makeup product : Correct! The twin cake is a pressed powder that acts as foundation. It got it's unique name in Korea, from the build of the case. The upper flap/lid contains the puff that helps with the application, and the lower lid contained the actual powder, with an inbuilt mirror on the top of the second lid.

2023.03.21 20:31 Yunotheninetales Ex trying to sabatoge daycare
Hi again, My ex is up to playing games once more. I received a text stating he was going to take our daughter to a physical to put her into the school district he is in next year.
This would remove her from her daycare that already has a upk program inside the building and force me to travel out to a different town 4 different times a day and cause her not to have a daycare during work hours for me.
Her current childcare arrangement was approved by the court already as well as paid for by childcare assistance due to my income, is he able to just on a whim change this? What can I do if he does? How can I prevent him from doing this? She is 3 years old so it wouldn't be an actual grade school level change such as going into kindergarten, and it wouldn't be providing her with anything she isn't already receiving at her childcare center as they are also approved as a UPK by the school district I am in.
We live in neighboring districts, however her older brother (10) who is in grade school does attend the school district where ex lives as he still resides in the marital home and we didn't want to completely turn the child's world upside down with a school change on top of home life changes. I am listed as the custodial parent although our arrangement is 50/50. We are in NYS.

2023.03.21 20:24 thrower_wei Urban planning and new developments in China
Urban planning is an interest of mine, and perhaps the number one area where I think China could do better. The dominant design philosophy of Chinese cities seems to run counter to what are considered best practices by most urban planners, both Chinese and foreign. For those unaware, new developments in Chinese cities often follow a "super block" layout, with large, sometimes gated communities of slender high-rise buildings and greenspace, plazas, and courtyards, separated by large arterial roads. It seems to be a fusion of traditional Chinese design philosophies and Le Corbusier's radiant city and towers-in-the-park. If you ignore the liberal slant,
this is a pretty good overview.
There are benefits of the layout, for sure. The main benefit is the sheer speed at which they can be built. The city simply hands large parcels of land to developers, who plop down some copy-paste towers while a grid of roads is built around. They are also usually closed to car traffic, which allows for easy walking and reduces noise, and often (but not always) there are shops and restaurants in the complexes which means you don't have to travel far for daily needs.
But there are major drawbacks as well. The self-contained nature means that non-residents do not get to enjoy the amenities within or walk through the complexes, and creates a less vibrant street life. The arterial roads surrounding the complexes are extremely wide, unpleasant to cross, and are often congested. Cities, especially near the peripheries, feel more like disjointed villages than a cohesive whole.
From what I understand, the central government recognizes the issues, and released some guidlines recommending more open, integrated, and walkable designs, but they received pushback from local governments, private citizens, and developers, who are largely set in their ways. In particular, citizens value privacy over openness, and natural sunlight and space for cars over density. As such, the guidelines are basically unenforced.
I think China could learn a lot from other countries in this regard. Chinese cities are way better than anything in countries like the US, Canada, and Australia, but that's an extremely low bar. Cities like
Istanbul,
Tokyo,
Amsterdam, and
Helsinki are routinely praised by urban planners for their high modal share of walking, cycling, and transit, vibrant street life, and high yet manageable density. In contrast, some typical Chinese streets might look more like
this or
this. Do Chinese people really strongly prefer the latter? Imagine the design philosophies of the former combined with China's prowess in construction, public transit, and technology - they would probably be the best cities in the world.
And it's not like China
doesn't have amazing neighborhoods, either, like these areas in
Shenzhen,
Beijing,
Shanghai, and
Xi'an. But these tend to be specific shopping, commercial, and/or tourism districts, not where most people actually live and work, or they're old areas that are due for redevelopment. In contrast, in a city like Tokyo, unless you're way out in the outskirts, you can expect to step outside your door and be greeted by shops, restaurants, vibrant street life, feel connected to the city as a whole, and be only a short walk to the nearest metro station. Again, not that China doesn't have those things either, but you can expect more of a trek, especially in more spread out cities like Beijing.
Is there any hope of things changing? I've seen some new developments that look really good, such as
this area in Shanghai, but it seems like for every development like that, there are 50 that looks more like
this. If you ask me, China should redevelop and expand areas like
this with modern building materials, wider sidewalks, street cars, underground parking, greenery, etc. rather than build places like
this I'd love to read some sources on what's happening on the ground, particularly with the Xiong'an new area and the megacity drive. I have no trouble finding academic articles from Chinese urban planners, but it seems like there's a large disconnect between what they recommend and what's actually implemented, which is disappointing for a society that's as meritocratic and technocratic as China. I'd also love to hear your thoughts, especially from people who live in China.

2023.03.21 18:52 nostone3241 The connection between Freemasonry, Indian residential schools, the Indian wars, the Indian removal act, the Indian act and the Indians-as-Israelites theory.
My name is Thomas Saul, I am a member of the
Skatin Nations tribe in British Columbia, Canada. I am of
Salish, and European descent. I began this project around May 2021 when news broke about the
Kamloops residential school where the remains of 215 children were allegedly found. As a teenager I briefly Attended Norkam secondary in Kamloops, and have friends and family who still live in Kamloops, so this hit close to home. Upon my research into The origin of this residential school I found that
Israel wood Powell, a Freemason, was the Indian Superintendent at the time it was built. Four generations of my family attended residential schools, some in
Port Alberni and some
Mission City, so naturally I wanted to know more. I have come to the conclusion that Colonisation,
Freemasonry, and residential schools go hand in hand. Its a Fact, both the United States and Canada would not exist without Freemasonry, Therefore many Freemasons played a leading role in the genocide of Indigenous Americans. “Freemasonry, as it exists in various forms all over the world, has a membership estimated at around 6 million worldwide.”
Genocide: The UN definition, which is used in international law, states that genocide is: "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group," as such:(a) "Killing members of the group;"(b) "Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;"(c) "Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;"(d) "Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;"(e) "Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group."
The supreme governor of the Church of England is the head of the Church of England, a position which is vested in the British monarch. The father of the
Royal Proclamation of 1763 King George III was not a Freemason, George III had announced that the colonies would
no longer seize Native lands or purchase them without treaties. Starting in 1763, no English settlers could legally travel through or acquire land west of the Appalachian Mountains. The proclamation specifically stated that Native Americans had been subject to “great Frauds and Abuses” and that their sovereignty should be protected. Freemason Thomas Jefferson in his list of 27 grievances accused the king saying “He has excited domestic Insurrections among us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes, and Conditions.’’ Thomas Jefferson did this to build support for the revolutionary act that the Declaration of Independence would represent. It was suspected that the Freemasons were behind the
Boston Tea Party, the
American War of Independence, the french
revolution, and
Napoleonic France triggering British prime minister William Pitt’s
, the Unlawful Societies Act of 1799 where he aimed to see Freemasonry abolished. Some Freemasons addressed Pitt explaining how vast their membership is and its connection to Royalty and As a result, Freemasons were excluded from the Act, but lodges were obliged to return a list of members to the local Clerk of the Peace every year, which are recorded in the Quarter Sessions.1. King George IV reigned from the death of George III until 1830, he was the first of many British Freemason kings and was the head of the Anglican church.
William IV,
Edward VII,
Edward VIII,
George VI were also masons. In the 209 years since the Union of the Premier and Ancient Grand Lodges to form the United Grand Lodge of England, a member of the Royal Family has been its Grand Master for more than 150.
A Freemason warrant of constitution is the Document which authorizes or gives a Warrant to certain persons therein named to organize and constitute a Lodge, Chapter, or other Masonic Body. The first Warrant for a military Lodge was issued by the Grand Lodge of Ireland in 1732 to the First British Foot Regiment. Within a few years the Grand Lodge of Scotland and both the Grand Lodge of England, Modern and Ancient were issuing Warrants to military Lodges. In 1733, 18 men gathered at the Bunch of Grapes Tavern on King Street in Boston and organized the first Masonic Lodge in North America. The first record of a military Lodge Warrant being issued in the new world happened during the French and Indian Wars. It was issued by the then Provincial Grand Master at Boston to the 28th British Foot in an expedition against the French at Crown Point. Edward Cornwallis became founder in December 1748, of a military Lodge in his regiment, the 20th. Foot, No. 63, on the registry of the Grand Lodge of Ireland. The warrant was issued to Lord George Sackville, Lieut. Col. The Hon. Edward Cornwallis and Captain Milburne. When in 1759 this famous regiment gained new honors at the battle of Minden, that name was immediately adopted as the name of the lodge. Cornwallis’ second lodge was founded in Halifax early in 1750 or possibly earlier, under a “deputation” or dispensation from Major Erasmus James Philipps of the 40th. Regiment at Annapolis Royal, Provincial Grand Master for Nova Scotia under Henry Price of Boston. Of this lodge, known as the First Lodge, Cornwallis was the first Master. Cornwallis In October 1749, issued an order that came to be known as the Scalping Proclamation. His government would pay a bounty to anyone who killed a Mi’kmaq adult or child in a bid to drive them off mainland Nova Scotia.
Sir William Johnson, an agent for the British Indian Department met
Joseph Brant, a 9-year-old Mohawk boy while doing a land deal with Joseph's father King Hendrick. Sir William eventually started a common-law relationship with Joseph's sister
Molly giving him incredible power over her tribe. Johnson groomed young Joseph Brant to become a loyal warrior and eventually leader of
the six nations tribe. At 13 years old Joseph accompanied Johnson on his first tour with the military. Missionary
Samuel Occham, a student of
Eleazar Wheelock (father of
The Great Awakening) procured a 19-year-old Joseph Brant to attend
Moore's Indian charity school in Lebanon Connecticut with the blessings and charity of William Johnson. Freemasons Benjamin Franklin and Benedict Arnold had also donated money to Wheelock’s cause. William was the British Crown's first superintendent of Indian Affairs for the colony in 1756 and Joseph Brant was appointed as a captain in the Indian Department. Many Freemason colonists were high-ranking military who waged many wars on the Indigenous American population, scientists say so many Indigenous people were killed as a result of colonization it caused a
mini ice age. After the North American wars, many Freemasons took positions as Indian agents helping to remove and segregate the native population. Anyone who wanted access to the six nations had to go through Indian agent Sir William Johnson and his family which includes the Brant family and the Kerr family through various marriages.
At one point Johnson proposed that the moor's Indian Charity School move from Lebanon, Connecticut, to Johnstown but it never happened. Eventually, Johnson withdrew the support for Wheelock. In a letter Wheelock had suggested to Lord Dartmouth "The Nations will not make war with us while their Children, and especially the Children of their chiefs are with us”
Dartmouth college claims that In 1766, Johnson was invited to join the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (SPG), the largest and most influential Anglican missionary society in the 18th-century British-Atlantic world. He began working to place Anglican missionaries like Freemason and
bishop Charles Inglis, rather than Congregationalist and Presbyterian ones, among the Six Nations. I believe Moore's dubbed “the great design” was the original model for the Mohawk Institute and the Canadian residential school system.
On April 10, 1766
Sir William Johnson was raised to the position of Master Mason of St Patrick's Lodge No. 4 where many Freemason Indian agents like
John Butler,
Guy Johnson,
Sir John Johnson,
William Johnson Kerr,
Christian Daniel Claus, Gilbert Tice, George Croghan and A protégé of Reverend
Eleazar Wheelock,
Rev. Samuel Kirkland attended. In 1770 Johnson's fellow St Patrick's lodge Freemason Rev. Samuel Kirkland coincidentally parted ways with Wheelock and Moors charity school. Eventually Kirkland founded the
Hamilton-Oneida Academy as a boys' school in central New York. In 1776 Joseph Brant was initiated into the Freemason fraternity in London England where it is rumoured a benefactor of Moors charity school
king George III gave Brant his masonic apron. When Brant returned to Canada he became affiliated with Lodge No. 11 at the Mohawk village on the Grand River, of which he was the first
Worshipful Master, and later affiliated with Barton Lodge No. 10. Joseph Brant invited fellow Freemason and grandson of Eleazar Wheelock to be a minister to the Mohawk. To Joseph It was imperative that Freemason
Rev. Davenport Phelps was made minister of the Mohawks, so
he reminded the Bishop, through Sir John, of the pledge which the Archbishop of Canterbury had made to him in the presence of the King, that whenever the Indians, by the erection of a church, should be ready for religious instruction, he would do all in his power to supply their wants. A Freemason named
Rev. Robert Addison helped make this happen. Mr Addison, a relative of William Johnson, had been minister to the Six Nations and Joseph Brant and Freemason
John Norton were his translators. Freemason Reverend Davenport Phelps and Jarvis Wheelock, the brother of Eleazar, were invited to Canada and granted land by Freemason and founder of the family compact
John Graves Simcoe, the man behind the
Simcoe patent. Mrs Simcoe in her Diary says, “In April of the following year
Mary Brant (sister of Freemason Joseph Brant and common-law wife of Freemason Indian agent Sir William Johnson) successfully prescribed a favourite Indian remedy, the root of sweet flag (acorus calamus), for Governor Simcoe, who had been extremely ill with a persistent cough. The medicine relieved his malady “in a very short time. This brought the Brant family and Simcoe family close together. Davenport Phelps became the Worshipful Master of The Barton Lodge under Freemason
William Jarvis and he was the first chaplain at the Mohawk Chapel. Davenport was the leader of many Indian agents who were members of The Barton Lodge. I suspect Davenport's mission was to help with the so-called Indian problem.
Chief Joseph Brant has been accused on many occasions of selling off land for his own enrichment and in a lot of cases he sold land to Freemasons. He granted 999-year leases to many families, the Nelles, the Young’s, the families of Adam Young UE, his three sons, Lieutenant John Young (Indian department) UE, Sergeant Daniel Young UE, and Private Henry Young UE, along with Captain Henry William Nelles UE and his families (Rev. Abraham Nelles). Many of these Indian agents were members of The Barton Lodge. Both Captain Henry William Nelles UE and Adam Young UE, fourth great-grandfather of Robert Collins McBride UE, were also the first Freemasons to settle in Haldimand County. Freemasons
Robert Kerr and Rev. Robert Addison, William Kennedy Smith, also had land there. "There were very few outright legal sales of our land; 90 per cent of the leased land has never been paid for or paid to Six Nations," according to a
research document prepared by Six Nations. Many Freemasons were involved with the Simcoe patent and the
Haldimand Proclamation. Lieutenant Governor
John Graves Simcoe stated that the Indians could not lease their land since British subjects could lease land only from British subjects. Freemason
William Jarvis signed the Haldimand proclamation,
Freemason Thomas Ridout surveyor-general was behind the Ridout survey, Freemason
Sir Peregrine Maitland lieutenant governor informed them that they had no title to the northern part of the grant, Freemason John Butler acted as an agent of purchase on behalf of the government, F
reemason chief John Brant) and
Freemason Robert Johnson Kerr finally went to England to lobby on behalf of the Six Nations.
Freemasons King George IV, and King William IV, reigned from January 29 1820 to June 20 1837. The idea of residential school was brought forward by the Freemason Governor of Upper Canada, Sir Peregrine Maitland, within the context of a proposal he made in 1820 to the Colonial Office "for ameliorating the condition of the Indians in the neighbourhood of our settlements." Maitland's proposal contained most of the civilising concepts and techniques that would be adopted in the next three decades. The American Freemason, President Andrew Jackson succeeded in pushing the
Indian Removal Act through the United States Congress in 1828 leading to the trail of tears. John Brant solicited help from the New England company to build the Mohawk institute, the first residential school in Canada. The mohawk institute operated from 1831 to June 27, 1970. John Brant appointed Rev. Abraham Nelles son of Freemason Robert Nelles as principal of the Mohawk Institute. Abraham after over 30 years was succeeded by Freemason Robert Ashton
. Oronhyatekha aka Peter Martin was also a Freemason and played an important role in the development of the Mohawk Institute. The Arthur of the
Historical sketch of the Barton Lodge, No. 6, G.R.C., A.F. and A.M., says “the name of Brother John Brant is connected with important events in the history of Canadian Masonry.” John Brant is responsible for the formation of at
least 12 residential schools in Ontario, while Freemason Israel Powell the superintendent of Indian affairs in British Columbia Powell
“was able to boast that the government had established seventeen Indian schools, one for each year in office.”. Powell sought to establish several boarding schools across the province and particularly pushed for creating a school in Kamloops to address communities in the province’s interior. The school opened in Kamloops in 1890 and became one of the largest residential schools operated by Indian Affairs. The Freemason Organisation is
vicariously liable for all abuses in those residential schools.
In 1837 a Rebellion in Upper Canada was led by William Lyon Mackenzie, who was a fierce critic of Simcoe’s
Family Compact, an elite clique of businessmen and many Freemasons. Mackenzie opposed a system of land grants that favored settlers from Britain. Many Freemasons such as William Botsford Jarvis and
Sir Allen Napier Macnab who was Joint premier of the Province of Canada helped stop this rebellion. Sir Allen Macnab was succeeded by Freemason
Sir John A. Macdonald as Joint Premier. This Rebellion of 1837, this triggered the 6th generation Freemason Lord Durham to write
The Durham Report, he was appointed governor in chief of British North America. In his 1839 Report on the Affairs of British North America, he recommended that Upper and Lower Canada be united under a single Parliament, with responsible government. In 1863 a steamboat named
the Brother Johnathan) carried
smallpox from San Francisco to British Columbia killing 1/3rd of the Native population. Many Freemasons like
Thomas Harris the first mayor of Victoria,
Israel Wood Powell who served in the Victoria Rifle Volunteer Corps which was established to protect the colony from the indigenous population,
Amor De Cosmos who was the extremely racist editor of
The Daily British Colonist, and Ronald J. NcDonell clerk for
magistrate Pemberton who forced The Nuu-chah-nulth to leave their camp, escorted by two gunboats. There are many many more who may have purposefully mishandled the smallpox epidemic of 1863. British freemason
Edward Jenner created the life-saving smallpox vaccine but on the other hand Freemasons Jeffrey Amherst and Col Henry Bouquet have been accused of distributing
smallpox contaminated blankets to their enemies.
As early as 1866 Israel W. Powell, with his colleague Amor De Cosmos, had proposed confederation with the Canadian colonies.
Israel Wood Powell, Superintendent of Indian affairs also outlawed potlatching an indigenous ceremony In British Columbia. Following the Lord Durham’s report, Freemason Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon proposed
The British North America Act, 1867 Under section 91(24) of the Constitution Act, 1867, the federal government has exclusive legislative authority for "Indians, and Lands reserved for the Indians." Of the 36 Fathers of the Canadian confederation, 11 were Freemasons. One being Freemason Sir John A. Macdonald,
He was named by the United Grand Lodge of England as their Grand Representative near to the Grand Lodge of Canada. Sir John A. Macdonald took a page from American Freemason
Andrew Jackson's book by removing the Indigenous people from their land. He was proud that he was able to subdue the Indigenous people with less blood shed than his American brethren. One Of Macdonald's Legacies is the
Canadian Pacific Railway which displaced many tribes across Canada. Sir John A. Macdonald's campaign promise in the 1870s was that he would have a railway built that would link the country from coast to coast. Freemasons
Richard Marpole,
Sir Sandford Fleming,
Sir George J.A. Bury And the Chinese Freemasons of Vancouver and Alberta made Macdonald’s promise come true. As quickly as the railroad was laid Freemason lodges were erected.
Louis Riel a Métis hero, led two resistance movements against the Government of Canada and its Freemason Prime Minister, John A. Macdonald. Riel sought to defend Métis rights and identity. The Wolseley expedition was a military force authorized by Sir John A. Macdonald to confront Louis Riel and had been dispatched to Red River under Freemason
Colonel Garnet Joseph Wolseley. Another of Mcdonald's legacies is the
North West Mounted Police. Macdonald established the N.W.M.P in 1873 which boasted 750 Freemason members in its time. He claimed that “it was intended to have a body of mounted rifles to protect the people from the chance of an Indian war.’’ Meanwhile, The Pacific Scandal, the first major post-
Confederation political scandal in Canada,
Sir John Macdonald and senior members of his Conservative Cabinet were accused of accepting election funds for the contract to build the C.P rail.
The near completion of the railway allowed troops from eastern Canada to quickly arrive in the territory causing Riel to surrender to Canadian forces. The NWMP barracks was where Louis Riel was detained after his arrest in 1885 for leading the North-West Rebellion. Many Freemasons were involved in the defeat of Louis Riel. The RCMP museum had a display of the noose which hung Riel. Macdonald said this about Riel "He shall die though every dog in Quebec barks in his favor." John A. Macdonald is also one of the fathers of the Canadian
Indian act First passed in 1876. In 1879 Freemason Nicholas Flood Davin wrote the Report on Industrial Schools for Indians and Half-Breeds, otherwise known as The Davin Report. An amendment to the Indian Act in 1894 under Freemason Prime Minister Sir
Mackenzie Bowell, made attendance at
day schools,
industrial schools, or residential schools compulsory for First Nations children, resulting in over 100000 Indigenous children being forcefully removed from their families by Indian agents and the RCMP. From 1740 to 1896 The Mexican government's response to the various uprisings of the
Yaqui tribe have been likened to
genocide particularly under Freemason
Porfirio Diaz. Due to slavery and massacre, the population of the
Yaqui tribe in
Mexico was reduced from 30,000 to 7,000 under Diaz's rule. One source estimates at least 20,000 out of these Yaquis were victims of state murders in
Sonora. It was during this period of the conflict that the United States Army fought the last
battle of the
American Indian Wars, the final battle being the Wounded Knee Massacre December 29, 1890, and in the subsequent Drexel Mission Fight the next day. In recent history the statues of Freemason John A. Macdonald, Freemason Edward Cornwallis, Freemason George Washington, Freemason Lawrence Sullivan Ross, Freemason Robert E. Lee and Andrew Jackson have all been vandalized but no mention of their affiliation to the Freemasons in the news. We can't point fingers at the church or government without first confirming whether or not the accused are Freemasons.
The Order of the Eastern Star,
Job's Daughters, and
Rainbow Girls are masonic fraternities for women such as the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a Master Mason. All masons will cry out that Freemasonry has nothing to do with what an individual member has done, yet they all praise these men and prop them up as heroes. Freemasons claim to have superior morality compared to the average person, that they are the most honorable men on the planet, yet they refuse to acknowledge their members role in the genocide of the Indigenous Americans.
You may believe Freemasons are irrelevant nowadays but that is far from true. Winston Churchill is regarded as one of the greatest wartime leaders of the 20th century. Churchill was initiated into Studholme Lodge No. 1591 on 24 May 1901. He said of the Pashtun people “all who resist will be killed without quarter,” Pashtun territory was occupied by the British in 1848 and divided into two areas. Winston Churchill's policies caused a famine that claimed more than 3 million Indian lives during the The Bengal famine of 1943. President Harry Truman, known as one of the most dedicated men to have joined Masonry on the morning of August 6, 1945, ordered an American B-29 bomber to drop two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The two bombings killed between 129,000 and 226,000 people, most of whom were civilians. John Edgar Hoover, more commonly referred to as J. Edgar Hoover, was an American attorney and director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Hoover was raised on November 9th 1920 in Federal Lodge No. 1 in Washington D.C. In 1919 Hoover became the head of the Bureau of Investigation's (predecessor of the FBI) new General Intelligence Division. The division was also called the Radical Division because it was the task of the division to find radical elements in American society to monitor and disrupt their activities. The Duke of Kent was initiated as a Freemason in Royal Alpha Lodge No. 16 in London on 16 December 1963.
The Duke of Kent, is now UGLE’s longest-serving Grand Master. The Duke’s brother, Prince Michael of Kent, is also a Freemason and is Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, and Provincial Grand Master of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Middlesex. On 6 March 1953, HRH Prince Philip progressed to the Second Degree of Freemasonry, before advancing to the Third Degree on 4 May 1953.
I encourage those who have been affected by the actions of Freemasons to begin a class action lawsuit against this organization in what ever country, state or province you live in and hold Freemasonry accountable for genocide. The first thing a Freemason will say when presented with this evidence is you don't know how masonry operates, that the lodge is not responsible for individual members actions. That is exactly what the Catholic church said before the Canadian Court of Appeal on July 28, 2020 had found the Archdiocese vicariously liable for abuses committed by a civilian employee. I witnessed countless people stand up against the Catholic Church for what they have done and the Pope came to Canada and apologized. Now it's time to turn your sight toward Freemasonry. You must understand that all Freemasons on the American contenent have greatly benefited from the genocide of Indigenous Americans.
“ Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's acceptance of an inquiry's finding that Canada committed genocide against Indigenous people could have tremendous legal impact if a court ever weighs Ottawa's responsibility for crimes against humanity, experts say.”

2023.03.21 16:58 Rare_Improvement_241 Decolonization in Design and Governing
| This argumentative piece discusses the ideologies, constraints, positives, and negatives of decolonization. Decolonization refers to the movement of previously oppressed groups that go back to their original mannerisms, practices, and cultures; most groups that showed decolonization were often those from colonies that became independent of their colonizers. Fig.1: Ironic English Protest The most famous cases of decolonization appear hidden in plain sight, with some of the world's biggest countries showing scars of freedom fighting. The United States of America was not always united and free. In 1607, 104 Englishmen stepped onto the shores of middle North America. The British aimed to start a new settlement and further extend their roots to the furthest edges of the map. The British believed that their firepower and brute strength would overtake and overpower any existing post set up by other European countries and further be able to colonize any remaining native tribes who had maintained their independence thus far. The Native Indians are estimated to have arrived in America around 10,000 bc (Simonsen, 2006). These British people who settled in America became the new "Americans". They oppressed the Native Americans and fought them for their land leading to the First Native Indian War in 1609. The Native Americans were never defeated but suffered multiple casualties at the hands of the Americans. The Native Americans were close to losing the war towards the end of the 16th century but held off the Americans with their bows and arrows, stone clubs, spears, blow guns, and hatches. In the early 1700s, they were revolutionized and traded guns for goods with French, Italian, Belgian, and other significant European forces. Although Native Americans were not colonized, their ethics, practices, and arms were updated. They used the designs of oppressors to gain equality on the battlefield, fought the war for over 300 years, and were never fully controlled. When the war on Native Americans ended in 1924, they reverted from their colonial ways but kept using guns; what remained was their tribal and heritage-based home-building techniques, homemade, culture-filled weapons, notably the blowdart and bow and arrow, and their traditional Aztec prints (different to their camouflaged 300-year-old war attire) (Washburn, 2012). In the areas of design in decolonization, the Native Americas proved that returning to their original roots was fulfilling and fruitful; they did not lose their culture and adapted to modern times to protect and stand their ground. Fig. 2: Native Americans Europeans (the Dutch) first inhabited Southern Africa in 1652. It was evident that their reasons for being there were not to colonize or to live in unison with the natives but rather to build a servicing port for ships and to farm on the rich African soils. Almost a decade later, the British arrived in 1661. The Europeans asserted dominance over the existing African tribes, forcing Africans to give up some of their heritage lands and be outcasts in new areas that were not their homes. For the next 300-odd years, countless wars broke out between the British, Dutch, and Southern African tribes. In the 1800s, Zulus adapted to the modern styles of fighting (similar to the previously-mentioned Native Americans) and put down their sticks, wooden weapons, and other fighting techniques and found guns to be more efficient. They also adapted to makeshift tent designs and sleeping solutions similar to the Europeans. Despite narrowly losing the war to the British during the Anglo-Zulu War, they used European designs to gain respect from the Europeans. Although oppressed, they had more peace than they had while coexisting in the same space as the Europeans. In 1948, the apartheid regime began, and all people of colour were equally oppressed. The oppressed conformed to European ways of living but with fewer rights. They had no freedom to express their cultures and heritage through design, and European Gothic and Renaissance styles of Architecture were imminent throughout South Africa. Commercial buildings in CBDs and other areas of high business are plain and have very simplistic European facades. 1994 marked the end of the apartheid regime, and people of colour finally had equal rights. With that, their cultures began to thrive once again. Through fashion with cultural items such as animal prints, beaded goods, fancy feathered headwear, and other goods, African culture has imprinted on every race in South Africa; another race that embraced their fashion and culture was the Indians, who have pushed for fashion design and just like African (used as a vague, broad expression), has every race wearing it (Rovine, 2015). In architecture and the built environment, African culture can be represented by bright modern colours and unique patterns; their designs are slowly but surely making their way onto buildings as facades, decorative tiles, and finishes. Fig. 3: South Africans Protesting against Inequality While separating the art from the artist to some degree, the oppressed governing practices have quickly sent South Africa into poverty struck corrupted land; when looking at decolonization in terms of governing and control, although equal and free, it can be argued that since Africans have been reinstated back in control, the decolonizing of South Africa was detrimental (Hirsch, 2005). In design, Africa is thriving as a tourist hotspot as Africans have pushed their culture back out and into the world; by doing this, they have added depth to the South African culture and removed the dark monotone cloud that hung over South Africa's heritage. Fig. 4: Constitutional Court of South Africa - Facade Design In the mid-1600s, the British came across the remaining unexplored southern tip of Africa. It was once again a fight for them to reign power and authority over the native Venda people (Zimbabwe's leading and most prominent tribe). The British people fought for 300 years until a whole war broke out in then Rhodesia. The Rhodesian Bush War began between the Africans and Zulu in 1964 when the Africans opposed Rhodesian rule and oppression. The war became realistically winnable to the natives due to Zambia and Malawi gaining independence and the British Federation losing power in those countries. They used all the same tactics that they had learned as victims of their colonizers for the past 300 years; both sides used guns, knives, and bombs, and the fight was so equal that the war went on until 1979. The war ended in December, and by the first day of January 1980, the African people had already replaced the name Rhodesia with a new name that would fully represent their country, one that would go back to practicing Venda traditions of law and rule, viz. Zimbabwe (Gordon, 1981). Decolonization has previously shown that it is a positive idea with many advantages, but Zimbabwe was one of the significant cases of backlash. Fig. 5: Zimbabweans with Arms Protesting White Governing When Zimbabwe was restored to its original roots, Robert Mugabe became the prime minister in 1980 while Zimbabwe would still serve under partial British rule. Zimbabwe thrived for two years before Mugabe fired Joshua Nkomo (a member of the Zapu party) for accusing him of trying to overthrow the government; Mugabe enlisted North Korean trained soldiers to kill Nkomo's party off. In 1987, Mugabe merged forces with Nkomo and gained votes to become the president of Zimbabwe. Under Mugabe's decolonized rule, Africans gained more power in Zimbabwe than white people. Using pre-colonized rules, white people became a trophy-hunted commodity for the Africans. In 2000, Zimbabwe witnessed further bloodshed as white farm owners were slaughtered for their farms by squatters- the government supported these killings and abuse of power. In 2001, Zimbabwe opened up to the world about its financial problems as badly-run farms, poorly-maintained factories, and bank crashes caused the Zimbabwean dollar to drop quickly. Under decolonized governing, Zimbabwe was suspended by the Commonwealth and struggled with mass poverty and hunger. In 2005, an estimated 700,000 people were left homeless as the government orchestrated operation "clean-up" by destroying all street stalls and shacks. In 2008, the European Union and the United States declared full sanctions against Zimbabwe. In 2018, after 40 years of "independence", Zimbabwe changed the laws to give presidents a limited time of two terms in which they are allowed to serve a country. The designs and systems established by Commonwealth law or any generic democratic ruling often allow countries to flourish or crash with equal fairness between government and citizens. Zimbabwe's recent history has shown that as good as decolonization may be; it may also cause years of bloodshed, a crashing economy, poverty, and famine. Fig. 6: Zimbabweans Peacefully Protesting in 2020 In the early 1600s, the British landed on the warm sandy coast of Surat, India, solely intending to trade. Not long after, the British decided to dismiss their trade ideas with the Indians and instead do the trading of Indians and Indian goods. Despite not being under British Crown rule, India was oppressed and sapped of its people and goods. In 1858, the British officially declared that India's governing and control would come under British Crown rule whilst slowly easing off using Indians as enslaved people worldwide; they continued to trade cotton, tea, spices, indigo, silk, ivory, and marble deeply rooted in India's culture. Nearly 100 years after India served under British Crown rule, India broke free of the British and became independent, mainly through non-violent resistance promoted and endorsed by Mahatma Gandhi (Kale, 1998). India is still part of the Commonwealth, and the British heavily influenced their architecture (Cohen, 2001). However, after gaining independence, India went on a spree of building temples, shrines, and religious monuments. Since then, their unique culture can be seen in facades, tiles, gilded buildings, religious figures carved from stone, and other significant Indian designs (Scriver & Srivastava, 2016). To inject more culture into the country, India is moving away from British glass box designs used as the blueprint for commercial buildings; they felt the buildings lacked depth. India identified decolonization as more than just using designs and input from pre-colonizing days. Instead, that design is a sense of unity and self-acceptance and has a much more robust and positive psychological effect on individuals. The past may have been better for India. However, by decolonizing design, they rediscovered their foundations and still give tourists and locals a feeling of rich heritage and culture from centuries ago, now in modern times. Fig. 7: Indian Post-Oppression Bus Station Design In Britain's reign for power worldwide, its biggest threat was China. Without slavery, stealing from oppressed countries, and other human rights violations, China thrived as an economic, cultural, and design hub. Britain sought to gain control of China's economic zones and initiated the First Opium war in 1839. Britain could only partially sabotage China because its population and brute armed forces ensured greater defense against colonization. Britain took control of an island off the coast of China and asserted British Crown rule over what would become Hong Kong. The British ruled Hong Kong for over a century and a half. The Hong Kong citizens did not resist oppression. They waited until Britain traded them back to China with the agreement that Hong Kong would not be decolonized and practice capitalist ideas and systems for 50 years after the handover (Wong, 2013). Fig. 8: Hong Kong Citizens Demanding and Fighting for Democracy While British architecture and design can be seen throughout Hong Kong, China explicitly tries to inject Chinese culture into the previously oppressed independent state. With Mandarin banners, bright red and yellow facades, and other Chinese symbols like dragons, China is singlehandedly decolonizing Hong Kong. The problem that arose with Hong Kong being handed over to another state was that Hong Kong never had its independence and always belonged to another country, never fully being able to practice its decolonization (Lim & Lim, 2007). While China is positively reinstating culture and heritage in Hong Kong, protestors continuously fight to make Hong Kong its own country. Fig. 9: Proposed Building Facade Design from Mainland China Throughout this argumentative essay, we discussed decolonization in governance, design, heritage, and culture. Decolonization in the world's history is proven to be primarily positive. However, care must be taken to avoid extreme decolonization, especially in areas of design, as we risk losing the richly-woven tapestries of design constructs that have metamorphosized through the centuries. submitted by Rare_Improvement_241 to u/Rare_Improvement_241 [link] [comments] |

Texas Just Seized One of The Largest School Districts in The Country
https://www.vice.com/en/article/dy3zpy/texas-just-seized-one-of-the-largest-school-districts-in-the-country The takeover will replace elected officials with a state-appointed "board of managers" as Gov. Greg Abbott tightens government control over schools.
One of the largest school districts in the country has been taken over by the government.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed Wednesday that at the end of the school year, Houston Independent School District’s superintendent and school board members will be replaced by “a board of managers” chosen by the state’s government.
The decision is being justified based on the academic performance of one of the district's 276 campuses, and will impact nearly 200,000 students. It’s by far the largest school district in Texas, made larger by a failed TEA takeover of North Forest ISD in 2008.
In November 2019, the TEA put Houston ISD on notice that a state takeover was imminent after giving the district a succession of “D” and “F” marks in its evaluations. This was made possible in 2015 when the state legislature enacted a law that gave the TEA the authority to either close a failing campus that had received five years’ worth of failing marks, or take over the entire district by appointing a Board of Managers. In Houston ISD’s case, the TEA opted for the latter.
Houston ISD sued. But in January 2023, the Texas Supreme Court ruled that TEA could proceed.
The takeover comes at a time when Republican-controlled state governments have sought to tighten their grip on schools—from eliminating courses teaching Black history and other so-called “woke” topics to policies that remove books from classrooms unless they are on a state-approved list.
Texas educators argue the state agency set their district up to fail with its ever-changing standards. Jackie Anderson, president of the Houston Federation of Teachers, says the TEA is notorious for moving the goal post on districts, especially when it comes to student attendance rates, standardized test scores, and a program called “College, Career, and Military Readiness.”
“Students have to either attend college or graduate high school with some type of career or go into the military,” Anderson told Motherboard. “If the students don’t do that, the school district loses points.”
Wednesday’s letter to Houston ISD officials cites years of “chaotic board meetings marred by infighting” from school board members—only one of whom has been a sitting member since 2018—of routinely exceeding their authority by directing staff to violate Texas school laws.
“Even with a delay of three full years caused by legal proceedings, systemic problems in Houston ISD continue to impact students most in need of our collective support,” TEA Commissioner Mike Morath writes in the letter.
The Texas Tribune reported that last year, Phillis Wheatley High School earned a “C” and Houston ISD received an overall “B” from the TEA. In the last 19 months, the number of Houston ISD campuses that received failing marks have been reduced from 50 to 10. In a statement, outgoing Houston ISD superintendent Miller House II says this week’s announcement doesn’t discount the districts’ gains.
“I am proud to say, in the last 19 months, we have already seen vast improvements,” House II said in a statement to Motherboard. “Because of the hard work of our students, teachers, and staff, we have lifted 40 of 50 schools off the ‘D’ or ‘F’ TEA accountability ratings list. Together, with our parents, community members and leaders, we developed the district's first comprehensive five-year strategic plan to build a better HISD.”
The takeover of Houston ISD, the 8th largest school district in the country, raises alarm bells for many education advocates because of how far the state’s reach seems to go. As Motherboard previously reported, conservative policies enacted in Florida have threatened teachers and librarians with felony charges if they fail to remove books which the state considers “prurient” or “offensive.” What’s happening in Texas appears to demonstrate how two conservative governors and potential 2024 presidential contenders, Texas’ Greg Abbott and Florida’s Ron DeSantis, are caught up in an state-education arms race to control U.S. education. But Abbott’s approach is different in that it’s focused on privatization: The Texas Tribune has reported that Abbott supports a “school choice policy” via an educational savings account program.
“So you've given out these vouchers,” Anderson said. “The voucher has gone to these private schools. Then you don't have the money as a parent to pay for the next semester, and your child has to come back because you don't have the money to pay for the second semester. Now [Abbott’s] marketing this as ‘parents' choice.’ But parents already have a choice, without vouchers, where they want to send their kids to school. Houston ISD is a district of choice.”
Researchers who follow school district takeovers say there’s a lot of evidence that they don’t actually improve academic performance..They note that state takeovers disproportionately impact districts made up of a majority of students of color and elected boards comprised of trustees of color, and that they have other negative impacts on districts, including fractured parent and community relations with the schools.
“In the case of Houston, I’m concerned about what approach the board of managers might take to increase the number of charter schools in the area, as we saw in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina,” Chloe Sikes, deputy director of policy at the educational nonprofit Intercultural Development Research Association, told Motherboard. “The takeover concerns the academic performance of a single campus, Wheatley High School, which has actually improved in the latest accountability ratings to a C rating. If charter schools are expanded in the district, this could lead to other negative impacts to Houston ISD’s per student funding, teacher workforce, and community input and accountability.”
TEA’s Morath will determine how long the state’s board will control Houston ISD, which is the largest district TEA has taken over since 2000. More announcements from TEA are expected to be released in the coming weeks, but documents obtained by the Tribune before they were taken offline include an unpaid job application for Board of Managers seats that describe the core purpose of the Board of Managers as “to improve student outcomes” as they relate to preparing students for “college, career, or the military.”
Meanwhile, teachers unions like Houston Federation of Teachers are now bracing themselves for cost-cutting measures. When TEA took over North Forest ISD, Anderson says many teachers were laid off.
“Anytime an unelected individual that's appointed by the governor comes in and removes the entire democratically elected board [it] virtually silences our voices,” said Anderson. “You've taken away our democratic right to vote. And you have done a thing to us that says what we want does not matter.”
Law Prof To File Bar Complaint Against Stanford Students Who Heckled, Harassed Federal Judge

The bar handles two types of complaints: attorney misconduct, or unauthorized practice of law.
Law students are not attorneys and they are not practicing law by “heckling” a guest speaker at their college.
