Hello, kpopthoughts! Originally this was posted in twice but one of my friends said I should crosspost it here — so here this album review is.

Intro

To preface the review, I just need to say that this is going to be a very long read. Going through it myself for the fun of it takes around 30 minutes — it's almost 7k words, including lyrical references. So for the best experience, listen to the album beforehand to understand what the hell I was thinking when I wrote this, play the album while reading, and set a good amount of time aside.
And yes, this is 9 months late 😭 I'm not sorry — when I find an album review online it's always around a paragraph per song or even shorter. It makes sense from a journalistic perspective, but I want to do this album justice, hence taking 7 months to write out all my thoughts.
This shit is comprehensive and definitely overanalyzed, especially in Talk that Talk and Trouble. Each song review will compose of my commentary, noting the details I noticed through months of listening, then a conclusion. Also, mild swearing warning, I like implementing a touch of "French" when I'm very emotional about something. Anyway, onto the review!

TELL ME WHAT YOU WANT
TELL ME WHAT YOU NEED

Talk that Talk 🎙

Producers by collapsedone and MRCH

One of the most perfect TWICE songs.
I think this is one of TWICE’s best-sounding title tracks. Warm modulated synths, a thrumming bass line, distant bells, shimmering synths — the purpose of this song is to be fun and my god is it excellent at it, like, Sana and Chaeyoung are saying knock-knock-knock and beep-beep-beep as if they’re some kind of car. So much fun.
Further along in the verse, Dahyun’s voice sounds so full and smooth with that layered harmony. Tzuyu coming with the Yes or Yes, Push & Pull, and 1 to 10 references — these are 5 years of song references. And Jeongyeon closes the pre-chorus accompanied by a rising synth to drop into chorus one. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
The drums accelerate, the synths start blasting, and Jihyo opens to that party of a chorus with her godly vocals,

Tell me what you want
Tell me what you need
A to Z da malhaebwa
But shijageun ireoke have
Talk that Talk ttak han madi
Talk that Talk L-O-V-E
deullyeojweo ooh
Now now now now now yeah~

During Sana's Talk that Talk~ lines there’s this gentle ascending synth bell that rings with the descending melody and it sounds absolutely gorgeous. And the choreography during that part of the chorus is so so so so fun: the talking hands bit, spelling L-O-V-E, concluding with the deullyeojweo ooh! Oh my Jihyo the deullyeojweo ooh
Have I mentioned this song is fun?
Speeding through verse 2; Chaeyoung’s part with the cat ears popping in the music video is adorable; Momo her stretching her arms out looks so damn cool; and Dahyun with her replay part sounds so lovely — although I think it sonically sounds a touch random, it makes sense thematically.
And now for this pre-chorus. Mina and Jihyo leading into it sound great BUT JEONGYEON… Now, she is my ult bias, and this pre-chorus sounds almost identical to the first one, but the way she holds that final note, inflecting and holding that now~ for one more beat before the chorus drops sounds so perfect — the song teeters on a cliff edge. Jeongyeon slays pre-choruses.
Dropping into the second chorus and man the way Nayeon delivers it just hits different. She has this indescribable “pop” voice (I promise this wasn't on purpose) that shouts out loud that this is THE chorus. This is especially apparent in how both lead their choruses where Jihyo starts at 120% power while Nayeon waits until [Tell me] WHAT YOU WANT to full-send it. The production also helps with this effect, cutting out during what you to emphasize Nayeon's voice before crashing back down, double the pause at Jihyo's intro.
Another deullyeojweo ooh! Nayeon travels to Narnia, and Mina the engineer strikes again in this heavenly, underwater-esque bridge,

The simple words “I love you”
That’s all I wanna hear
Without hesitation, I’ll go up to you
I’ll make it simple
And just tell you I love you

The word “love” is said for the first time in the song. There’s a funky keyboard instrument behind Chaeyoung’s part. Jihyo, Chaeyoung, and Nayeon take the initiative in their lyrics, professing their love before closing the bridge.
And now for the pièce-de-résistance: this final double chorus is exceptional — 40 seconds of crack-laced euphoria; Jihyo switches up the chorus and the choreo, Dahyun chimes in with her fluttery Talk that Talk, Momo comes out of nowhere with oh yeah it sounds so good! — you’re damn right it does, and this is where the song SOARS.

han beon deo~ haejweo
geurae banggeum geu mal~

Nayeon outright shouts Tell me what you need and then Jeongyeon sings the above lines in such an ethereal, warm way where the first line ascends while the second descends, causing a lull in the song before the finale with Tzuyu and Nayeon, finishing off the song with the final deullyeojweo ooh!
What a party. What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

Lyrics and theme-wise, if this were to have been TWICE’s last comeback, they’ve once again built upon the theme they've been doing since debut: a Bildungsroman, a coming-of-age story.
This song’s chorus is honest yet simple; it asks the listener, in this case, the other half of the relationship, to be more upfront and open with their love (never be scared of love), that before the relationship can continue and flourish, there has to be a foundation and commitment of love between each other.
TWICE debuted with a song about making your crush go ooh ahh. Years later, they started pondering What is Love? and imagining their crush responding with Yes when asking them out — and now concluding with the phrase Talk that Talk, [Talk that] L-O-V-E, being upfront with the relationship, wishing their partner to also be happy, to commit to them, to feel the love that they want to impart on them. From gawking like ooh-ahh to talking out your shared love like adults — to having a true relationship between (one and) two.
And can I just say before finishing off Talk that Talk's review that this is such a fun and repeatable song with many little intricacies hidden in the nonet’s vocals and the song's production. This is the third draft I’m writing about Talk that Talk and its original word count pretty much quadrupled.
Harkening back to TWICE’s roots by combining mature thinking with youthful character, an incredible ending to look forward to, and just simply being a club-banger that’s easy to listen to, TTT is an easy 10/10.

WATCH ME GO WATCH ME GO
RULE THE WORLD

Queen of Hearts 👑

Produced by LDN Noise

If there was one B-side to promote in a live clip, this was a solid choice.
Helmed by LDN Noise going headlong into the Western boy-group rock-band aesthetic, Queen of Hearts is a boom-boom-clap song through and through. The drums are very prominent throughout the song, only giving room to riffs of electric guitar in the chorus to drive and continue the momentum of the music.
And speaking of the chorus, vocal line each got a chorus to flex and they did not fuck around,

You ain’t ready for it
Watch me go~ watch me go~
Rule the world
Know you never doubted baby
I’mma go run the whole universe~

Cymbals crashing, drums booming, and 3MIX belting all just so sound so good.

Baby I was born to rule~~
Yeah I’m the Queen, I’m the Queen
And it’s all because of you~~
That I’m the Queen of Hearts

These long, held-out notes performed by Jihyo and Nayeon are simply exquisite. Along with the shredding guitar, the drum set coming in full, and the interludes by Dahyun, Momo, and Chaeyoung, this is the part of the song that always, always, gives me goosebumps — it sounds so visceral, so energetic, so fun, so triumphant. Boom-boom-clap songs can be hit or miss with people, but there's no denying the payoff from the first part of the chorus to the second part is worth the wait.
The theme of the song so far has been kind of spread around the song. The chorus alludes to it with the line And it’s all because of you. But Mina shows more sides of it in the second verse, especially with the phrase,

And now that I’m surrounded by all my girls
We be shining bright like diamonds and pearls

It sounds really lovely — in a very cheesy and affectionate kind of way, as it rightfully should — the song is about the girls and their fans. But the bridge is where the song indeed shows its colours

Screaming out my name
See it in the stage lights
Feel so lucky just to have ya
Cause I know deep down I was meant for something bigger! Greater!
I know you’re seeing what I see
Yeah I’ll be everything you need
I know I’m gonna walk the walk
And talk the talk to be~ [the Queen of Hearts]

This is a song CONCEIVED TO BE PERFORMED FOR THE FANS. It’s meant to be loud. It’s meant to be unapologetic. It’s meant to be sappy. And it’s all the more wonderful for it.
This is the TWICEiest shit ever.
Like Talk that Talk, Queen of Hearts also has a killer closer. The production already started to grow from the bridge, but now the guitarist finally went Super Saiyan and instead of supporting the drums, they both take the centre stage in tandem.
Then finally, the closing moments of the song even manage to squeeze in some more sappiness.

So thank you for the memories
You’re all the ones who made me~
So thank you for the memories
That I’m the Queen of Hearts

I still can’t believe that this banger is a FAN SONG out of all things. Truly, the TWICEiest shit ever.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

I love these types of rock songs with how grunge and head-bang-able they are, there is just a certain nostalgic and cheesy quality to them that feels so cozy. I don’t love putting them on repeat, because in this case, I do believe there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Perhaps more shredding, maybe a guitar solo to rock out to, or an accompaniment(!) of ad-libs from 3MIX to support Jihyo’s final chorus? A ONCE can dream of a truly bombastic rock song from TWICE. But then again that distracts from the core of what this song is: a fan song disguised as a rock song.
Queen of Hearts has so much sweetness in its lyrics and message that it's overflowing. The drums, guitar, and vocals can be as loud and intricate as they can, but the theme of this song is what makes it special from TWICE’s other rock songs — it’s a 9/10 for me.

I WANNA WANNA WANNA
TAKE YOU TO THE BASICS

Basics 🌈

Lyrics by Chaeyoung

Quite possibly the jammiest (pun intended) song of the album.
A song written by the Strawberry Princess herself — an event similar in frequency to other artists' releases with her last song being 2020’s silky Handle ItBasics first starts with an understated and dreamy delivery. After the first stanza, however, a bouncy Miami bass line emerges, revealing the true nature of the song: this is a classic summer bop! Especially in the first rap,

dareun aedeulgwaneun dalla
Ain’t beggin’ for love
nappeun geon anijana ige naraseo
eodiro twilji molla
Like rainbow bubble gum
geureoni nal kkwak butjabadweo

Syllables are pronounced in a relaxed nature, bars often starting with an "ah" sound, flirty lines in English — this rap features a production full of pop with R&B flourishes and, in my opinion, this is Chaeyoung’s bag. Also, the line rainbow bubblegum is so adorable and so Chaeyoung.

I wanna wanna wanna take it to the Basics
da weonhae weonhae weonhae? seodureuji ma Baby
ppeonhae ppeonhae malhae mweohae da al tende
Ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah ah yeah

That chorus is pure pop with a Miami bass backing; you better be bopping your head to the melody, if not booty poppin' to the bassline. Chaeyoung loves rhyming in the first half of the chorus to enhance its catchiness and it's damn incredible: wanna, weonhae, and ppeonhae all create these imperfect rhymes that continue momentum without feeling repetitive.
After the very Boy With Luv-sounding ah yeah ah yeah, ah yeah ah yeah comes an 8-bar split half and half between Chaeyoung and Momo. Coming from the chorus, the production completely cuts out for the first 2 bars. This adds tension; the song yearns to have that bass beat thumping again and all we have in the audio space in those 2 bars is Chaeyoung spittin' and she delivered.

taneun deut tteugeoun samak wie
yeppeuge pieonan jangmi gata
joshimseure naege dagaol ttae
nado moreuge jjilleobeoril tende

Translating to:

Above the hot, burning desert
It’s like a rose that bloomed beautifully
When you come to me slowly
I will prick you unconsciously

The rap feels slick, effortless, and confident. Her diction remains sharp when enunciating each syllable but she doesn’t let the flow of her rap waver or build as her 4 bars go by, it’s just smooth consistency throughout. Even the lyrics possess an aura of laid-back collectedness that is just so her. The things Chaeyoung can do when given her pen.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

This song is summer bliss distilled into 2:56. It’s dreamy, the raps are satisfying, and the ending is charming. I will say that although the second half of the song adds the stunning spaceship post-choruses and a floaty bridge with an incredible drumbeat drop into the final chorus, the raps of the song make it feel a bit front-loaded. And in an album stacked with awesome finishers, it feels more apparent.
With that said, it’s an 8/10 bop for me. This song is so easy to put on and it feels exactly what Chaeyoung would make if given the reins to produce a pop song all on her own. The lyrics are nonchalant but full of conviction, the wordplay is intricate, and the production playful but not too bombastic — it's just a nice vibe. Songs like Basics are the standard for good, simple, repeatable pop music and I’m happy that Chaeyoung got to test her pen in this genre.

BABY WE’RE IN
TROUBLE TROUBLE

Trouble 💃

Lyrics, vocal direction, and background vocals by Jihyo
Produced by Jihyo and earattack

One of the most enjoyable songs I’ve heard in a while.
There is an underlying tension within the first 4 bars of the song, Jihyo and Nayeon confidently open it to a nondescript array of synths and then the stanza ends, Momo announces Let’s go, the beat drops and it hits you: this is a club song.
Dahyun's relaxed delivery contrasting with Jeongyeon's staccato flow, the wobbly synth beat mixed with a sprinkle of house piano, Sana dramatically slowing down the song only for Tzuyu to build it back up until the chorus drops,

This chorus is perfect. Toronto’s residential market needs this song injected into its veins because god damn this song has SO much house in it. And then, ANOTHER KILLING PART: this rap fucking slaps.

gamchweo bwatja geugeon Fake
ppajin hamjeongeun Sweet cake

During the first 2 bars, Chaeyoung is keeping it calm because that trip of a chorus just ended and the song needs a breather, but I don't think anyone expected her to SNAP this hard afterwards:

You cannot resist this
Cannot miss this, such a bliss
Ima put it down down
Oh yeah, better kiss kiss

Below is the structure of her this portion of the rap, I’m not that well versed in this technical aspect of music theory but I digress, this is all in the span of around 5 seconds where it’s:

Triplet-triplet
Quadruplet-triplet
Quadruplet-doublet
Doublet-quadruplet

Now, 25/5 = 5 syllables per second isn’t groundbreaking, but goddamn it these 2 bars sound so nice — if there is one part in this album that I always repeat, it’s this. The addition of that first quadruplet for cannot miss this in the midst of the triplets sticks out and accelerates the flow of the rap while the following doublets and quadruplets destabilize and slow the rap down as the verse closes. And can I just point out:
THE MAIN VOCALIST WROTE, DIRECTED, AND COMPOSED THIS SONG ‼
Chaeyoung of course delivered the fuck out of her verse but THIS is what you get when you have a member not only write the words they’re saying but also the melody and flow with which they sing it, when that member knows the others so well that when they write a song they know how to make the group exceed. This is what you get when the artists you stan love doing artist shit.
And. AND. That's not all — with how much I mentioned I love a good outro to close a song, this outro slaps as well:

Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble be-be
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble bay-be
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trouble bay-beh
Woo wee woo wee woo
I like this Trou-ble

Like, come on, Nayeon’s imitating a police siren for crying out loud. And this is all after her ad-libs in the final post-chorus; after the pianist going full tilt and playing that piano as if it was their last chance to ever play; after that final T W I C E chant by all the members come these blissful 20 seconds at the very end. What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

Need I say more, easy 9/10. The only reason I place Talk that Talk above Trouble is because of what that song represents but besides that, this is one of the best “international” sounds they’ve put out. Actually, I haven’t listened to Eyes wide open in a while but this song is up there with one of the most sonically pleasing pieces of work they’ve done.
Clubbing TWICE has always been a thing since TT was birthed in 2016, and has been a staple of their discography since 2019’s Fancy You and Feel Special mini albums, but Trouble unapologetically dives into and fits the house genre so well you’d think that this is TWICE’s bread and butter sound.
Trouble is Jihyo’s magnum opus. What a song.

BRAVE BRAVE BRAVE
FOR YOU

Brave 💖

Produced by Slow Rabbit

I first thought this was just a good song, then I read the lyrics.
Gentle guitar plucks, shimmering synths, a distant keyboard in the right ear, in the left a glockenspiel, the melodic oohs from the members — this song is PRETTY.

The night that was unusually dark
Above this terrifying world, felt so lonely
The world has grown in the time of wandering
So hard to breathe

Mina and Chaeyoung open the song with how they feel lonely, that it's hard to breathe and now suddenly the song feels bittersweet — I was not expecting the song to become this emotional. Brave describes a situation where the singer is in a darker place in life and it isn't until another person gives them hope by calling them Brave that they find the drive to keep going.
Once the chorus hits, the melodies pick up, more guitars get added — there’s even an electric guitar hidden in the mix somewhere, and the song drops the emotional front to reveal a mid-tempo pop song to dance to while crying in the club. The song as a whole still carries this melancholy feeling, but now with the added support of the chorus, acting as a light amongst the gloom.
Continuing on in the second verse there's this gorgeous, well-placed break in the song that just lets it settle after that chorus. Only a seasoned producer would risk this much empty space in a song and Slow Rabbit went to fill those shoes.
Back to the chorus, I'll take this moment to once again commend Slow Rabbit with the mixing of the song, because 4MIX undoubtedly sounds good in the chorus, and the interludes from Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Mina also sound really good, but the clear highlight of the choruses are these lines:

Oh na na na neon nal naige hae
On and on and on
Brave Brave Brave for ya
Oh na na na neon nal sum shwige hae
On and on and on oh trust me babe

Momo, Sana, and Tzuyu form this beautiful, surprisingly catchy, second half of the chorus accompanied by a guitar drop. It should not turn out this well with how conflicting the "na"s are with the guitar melody but it creates this gentle bopping ebb and flow that feels so lush and mellow.
Diving into the bridge reveals that the listener of the song is revealed not only capable of supporting the singer through direct words but also through their thoughts and dreams. As can be discerned, this can be a song interpreted to be about ONCEs, about how they push TWICE to be their best selves despite the breathless hardships they face. It's a very sweet and touching song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

I’m actually spoiled with the TWICE members’ easy-to-understand songwriting that when a song like this pops up where it's not written by a member and the thematic bits are mostly in Korean, I tend to put it aside in favour of the other songs on the album. And, especially for a song focusing on a theme like this where the English phrases don’t do the Korean lyrics enough justice, it does place a bit of a barrier on the listening experience, dropping it down to a 7/10 from an 8/10.
With that anecdote out of the way, this song is just such a vibe, man. I know that sounds super hippy to say but Brave is so mellow and smooth that I can’t help but sway a little when that chorus hits. And then I remember what the lyrics say and I tear up a bit on the inside. This song is so pure, raw, and full of heart — we need more songs like these where they just reminisce about life while putting up an upbeat front. Don't mind me just crying while dancing the night away.
With that said, this isn't the first time this theme has been sung by TWICE either, they've long trodden this path of supportive, confiding, up-lifting songs with Young & Wild, Rainbow, Queen, Go Hard, Depend on You, even this album's Queen of Hearts, and, of course, Feel Special. Brave just adds another on top of an already stacked lineup, unique with its mellow somberness.
Also now feels like a good time to get into my rating system:

I SEE THE LIES
ON THE TIP OF YOUR TONGUE

Gone 💨

Lyrics by Dahyun

Who the fuck pissed off Dubu this time??
It’s getting quite rare to see TWICE pull off brand new sounds because, with now 190 original songs under their belt as of this review, they’ve done so many genres and sub-genres varying from hyper pop, to bossa nova, to whatever 2020’s Go Hard is. So it’s surprising to see they’ve still got tricks up their sleeves and Gone is one of them.
The song starts with strings swinging back and forth and vocal chops dancing from ear to ear, teasing what’s yet to come. Jihyo enters the song with a whisper and the song sets its pace. A stagnant drum pad moves the song along and typical song progression would have Mina continue the build, but — it doesn’t. The song simmers, adding a hint of high hat to the pot. And then Sana and Tzuyu come on and surely the buildup must boil over right?
Silence, until…

I see the LIES on the top of your tongue

The strings emerge again on full blast, the simmer rolls to a boil, and the anger of the song is revealed,

All the fate I had towards you
Fades like a fog, Gone, Gone
Your flipping mind of doing this and that
I’m tired of it, it’s meaningless
In the beginning, it was hard to believe
With that, hatred increases

The singer is so scorned and burned from this relationship that they reminisce about all the effort they’ve put in since the beginning, but their “partner” is so unconcerned that they’ve just about had enough of the relationship altogether.
This has been Dahyun’s thing since 2020’s Bring It Back, 2021’s Cruel, 2022’s That’s all I’m saying, and even 2023's Don't Blame It On Me — emotionally charged breakup songs that make you feel as if she’s survived through a dozen bad relationships. Dispatch, do try to do your job better.
Another highlight of the song is the post-chorus going into the bridge. This segment reiterates the structure from the first post-chorus — a barrage of drums supported by the rhythmic strumming of a bass guitar along with a consistent synth filling out the soundscape. But this time, it’s Dahyun and Chaeyoung on the rap:

I can’t stand it anymore
My patience, invisible
I can’t find it, it’s all Gone
Even if I try to turn back, it’s too late
There’s no use anymore
It has left, it’s long Gone
You, with flipping mind, you are out
I know that you know what I’m talking about
Nothing you could say that could turn this around
I’m Gone

Building upon the disrespected theme of the song, Dahyun notes that she’s finally had enough with Chaeyoung adding that there’s no point salvaging what love was once there. Momo and Dahyun round it off by telling the listener that there’s no point trying to reason with them or playing naive, they fucked up and there’s no coming back.
Can I just say, it's a bit of a shame that Chaeyoung’s rapping popped off in this album while Dahyun only has this one verse that she shares with Chaeyoung, but it just sounds so good how Dahyun eases in after the chorus with her light rapping tone transitioning into her singing. She even holds the Gone in a little crescendo for some added pizzazz.
And, there’s no way I’m not going to talk about Momo’s vocals in this bridge. Damned if she only got 1 line to use it in, her lower register is incredible. She sounds so smooth singing in this tone. All of TWICE do in particular and there is nary a weak vocal performance in this album.
To close the song off, a wash of synths gets to have their shine in the spotlight, showered with Nayeon’s belting, signifying the dramatic and drawn-out conclusion of this partnership.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

Going back to that point about the first post-chorus as a whole; songs that have the production continue unchanged into the post-chorus/2nd verse are very hit or miss for me — see TWICE's Don't Call Me Again for an overbearing example. The post-chorus going into the bridge contrasts Dahyun’s light tone nicely with the hard-hitting production, continuing the energy until it slowly fades into silence at the end of the bridge.
Back to the song as a whole, as much as TWICE has been experimenting with their sound for the past 4 years now, I’m happy they’re still finding new ways to explore what they’re capable of. And for that alone, even though I’m not a big fan of songs like these where they rely on sounding “big”, Dahyun’s lyricism and the thrill I receive every time I indulge myself in this song elevates it to an 8/10. Keep on breaking hearts, Dubu.

INVINCIBLE
SUPERHEROES

When We Were Kids 🧸

Lyrics by Dahyun

Press play to reminisce, pull up lyrics to cry.
This song is so beautiful. I’m totally not writing this song review, crying on the bus reminiscing about my childhood, while just having turned 21. I don’t know if these are happy or sad tears but this song is so beautiful either way.
Warm synths, muted piano, a gentle high hat, the younger members starting off the song — this has to be up there for one of the softest TWICE songs ever. And as it should, it’s one of the TWICEiest songs ever. And then Nayeon comes in:

Invincible superheroes, we wanted to be adults
To the higher, clearer world

The chords start swelling, the high hat keeps pace, and the harmonies pour in.

Remember When We Were Kids
When We Were Kids, we didn’t know
If we could go back
I will love it even more
Remember When We Were Kids

Jihyo takes up the second half of the chorus as it drops, trading the strings for an almost R&B synth production — if choir R&B takes off, this song started it. The song relishes in this cacophony of warm sounds until returning to its sparse and peaceful verses.
This time, the hints of piano are louder, little twinkling synths begin to shimmer, the drum buildup comes and Jeongyeon drives the song straight into the chorus. No time for the strings to build like in Nayeon’s — this song loves its chorus so much.
And I'll just take this time to appreciate the amount and range of Jeongyeon vocals in this album. Her voice is so textured, stable, and projected — but also more tender and soft compared to the more pronounced tones of Nayeon and Jihyo.
The bridge comes in, repeating the phrase:

I wish that I could meet
Could meet the younger me

Giving the song time to rest, before building back up to the last chorus — this time led by Jihyo, completing the 3MIX trifecta. And interestingly enough, Chaeyoung follows up in the second half of the chorus, rather than another member of the vocal line. She really did pop off in this album.
As the last chorus begins to close, the percussion at its strongest, the harmonies on blast, the background vocals cranked up to their Sunday best, is the song going to end? Of course not! This is an album full of banger endings as if the songs don’t want to end, and When We Were Kids being the album closer very much indulges in that feeling.
After a brief refrain, accented by Nayeon’s high note with a touch of vibrato, the song almost dives back into a fourth chorus. Nayeon and Jeongyeon harmonize — a rare and heavenly moment. And the song repeats the bridge, reiterating that they want to meet their younger selves, this time with the lush chorus production before closing with silence, a few piano notes, and Tzuyu singing the last line of the song:

Oh, we were kids

Reflection, acceptance, hope. What a song.

THE GOOD
Needs Work
Core Memory

I wrote the first part of this review in November 2022. Then university, life, and other things got in the way of my headspace for me to feel confident about wrapping all of this up. In a way, I felt like I just didn’t want this review to end because of the joy that writing gives me — I didn’t want the happiness to end. And then it hit me, after watching a YouTuber rank animated movies and them placing Spirited Away at the top and explaining 'why' reminded me of just how important growing up is, and by extension this song.
This theme is important for both the rookie TWICE members in 2015 and the teenagers who would follow their journey and grow up with them, facing life’s obstacles along the way. Hardships that used to only involve family, crushes, and social media, evolve into work, commitments and all the struggles that adult life brings. Being a kid and enjoying the simple things in life is one of the most sought-after moments we want to relive because we took growing up for granted. The only thing we can do now is look back on ourselves with fondness and rose-tinted lenses.
TWICE’s original meaning was to resonate with people through their senses and their hearts. That was during their debut, and I think it still holds up today. In my opinion, touching people through their emotions is what TWICE does best and makes them one of K-pop’s all-time greats. It was never about having the best numbers — it was about being the best idols. And to think that this journey of maturation and growth would occur from 2015 all the way to this song, being a fitting nod to TWICE’s 7th anniversary, I don’t think anyone at the company nor the group would ever imagine that they would get this far. It’s these nine women or none — 9/10.
This song honestly deserves a 10/10 with how much I noticed other people reminiscing their childhoods after I heard this song, it is such a widely-relatable message, but I am determined to limit myself to one 10/10 song per album and if I were to pick between TTT and WWWK, I'd give it to the one's that's more repeatable — Talk that Talk just has this electric energy about it.

Epilogue

And finally here is the end. If you made it in one sitting then I commend you, because I could not write this mess in one sitting. As alluded to, I started writing this album review sometime in October, after a series of edits the first draft was finished in March, and now here's the final draft in June.
I love this album. It got me through some important parts of my life, both good and bad, and it's just a wonderful listen throughout. Reliving this album again before finally completing the review has been an exciting journey. Brave hit me harder this time, after being overshadowed by the other gems of this album, and WWWK finally got me to tear up and not just be emotionally satisfied.
I feel like there's something for everyone on this album. From the exhilarating thrills of TTT to the anthemic euphoria of QoH, the clubbing dichotomy of Trouble and Brave to the blissful glee of Basics, and the sweet reminiscence of WWWK to the thundering anger that is Gone. Like Eyes wide open, I liken Between 1&2 to a pop music taste platter — there's such an eclectic mix of pop music in this album that there's bound to be a song that someone will love, like, and dislike.
Is this album perfect? I don't think so, but it's close — it was certainly my 2022 AOTY. Was this review biased? Absolutely. I've been a fan since 2019 and with the themes in this album, I also feel like it was biased towards me as a ONCE. And how would I rank the album in TWICE's catalogue? It's honestly at the top, at least with EPs — I also felt that way towards Feel Special but then this album was birthed so I'm excited for TWICE's future.
Ready To Be was also a stunning album and Eyes wide open frankly also deserved the spotlight that Formula of Love received so I might hit those next but no promises; this album took long enough to bake.
As for the performances, I've only seen Twitter clips (no fancams to not spoil myself) and I am SO EXCITED to finally see them in July. QoH was as glorious as expected, Brave was a delightful surprise, and WWWK, while not being the concert closer everyone expected it to be, paired up nicely with Crazy Stupid Love. And of course the bombastic addition of the dance break to TTT. But, this is not a concert review, and here is where this album review ends.
Feel free to comment with any thoughts regarding the album, other TWICE albums, and any suggestions for my writing in general. Congrats again on making it this far!
God, I love this album.

2023.06.05 03:16 Diamond4Hands4Ever 2023 Post-Deadline Mock Draft with Explanations

1 Spurs: Victor Wembanyama
2 Hornets: Brandon Miller
3 Blazers (or another team): Scoot Henderson: If Scoot is still available at #3, the Blazers should trade this pick on draft night for a more established player. However, if they cannot do that, they have to still take Scoot. The fit would be weird, but as the clear BPA, he can be traded later on for an All-Star (similar to Tyrese Haliburton and Kevin Johnson).
4 Rockets: Amen Thompson
5 Pistons: Jarace Walker: Most mock drafts have Cam Whitmore here. However, I think Walker fits better with Cade/Ivey since he is a better defender, passer, and more versatile than Whitmore.
6 Magic: Ausar Thompson
7 Pacers: Taylor Hendricks: I’ve had him in the top 10 for a long time, so I’m glad the consensus is trending there too.
8 Wizards: Anthony Black: The Wizards need a low-usage PG, and Black is the best PG available at this point.
9 Jazz: Cam Whitmore
10 Mavs (or another team): Gradey Dick: If the first 9 goes in the way I have them, the Mavs should actually trade this pick for a more ready NBA player. They can also trade down and grab Kris Murray with a later pick. However, if they have no choice, I think they have to choose the best floor spacer left (regardless of athleticism) for Luka/Kyrie, and that’s Dick.
11 Magic: Jordan Hawkins: If Dick is still available, he could go here. However, if he’s gone, I think the Magic choose Hawkins, who can help space the floor for Paolo/Wagner and act as the opposite player to Jalen Suggs (offense/defense) at the 2.
12 Thunder: Leonard Miller: This is rumored to be Bilal Coulibaly, but I like Leonard Miller more here for the Thunder.
13 Raptors: Cason Wallace
14 Pelicans: Dereck Lively II: I’m not a big fan of Lively, but the Pelicans are pretty deep at the wing already. This would be a developmental project at the backup C.
15 Hawks: Kobe Bufkin
16 Jazz: Keyonte George
17 Lakers: Kris Murray: Lakers want to win now, and Murray is the best NBA ready player left at this pick.
18 Heat: Jett Howard
19 Warriors (could be traded back): Trayce Jackson-Davis: The Warriors could trade this pick back (for the Pacers’ picks) if they think TJD is available later. If they don’t want to take that chance, I think they should go for an NBA ready backup C who can give them 10-15 mins. They don’t need young players anymore, but they need players who can play to help Steph/Klay/Draymond get 1 more ring.
20 Rockets: Bilal Coulibaly
21 Nets: Dariq Whitehead
22 Nets: Brandin Podziemski: It’s hard to guess what the Nets exactly want to do. They seem like they still want to contend for a playoff spot and rebuild at the same time. So in this case, they get a more raw player in Whitehead with a player analytics love in Podziemski.
23 Blazers: Colby Jones
24 Kings: Noah Clowney
25 Grizzlies: Julian Strawther: The Grizzlies like picking older prospects who can contribute quicker with their late first round picks. Dillon Brooks is probably gone, and they want to replace him with someone who’s a better shooter. Strawther might not start immediately, but he can come in and be a backup floor spacing wing right away.
26 Pacers (could be used in a package for a higher pick): Brice Sensabaugh
27 Hornets: Jalen Hood-Schifino: I’m not a fan of JHS, and if this was a big board, he wouldn’t be in my top 30. However, since this is a mock draft, I have him here since it’s hard for me to see him completely falling out of the first. He’s one of my candidates for someone who’ll get picked higher than what a re-draft will have him in 10 years.
28 Jazz: Julian Phillips: No one has him in the first, but he’s a better prospect than Peyton Watson. They have very similar measurables and defensive potential, but Phillips was better on offense. The Jazz want to rebuild, so they don’t mind taking a shot on an upside project.
29 Pacers (could be used in a package for a higher pick): Amari Bailey: He’s gone completely under the radar this past season. Besides a lack of consistent outside shooting, Bailey has done well in other facets for a freshman, compared to some of the other higher ranked freshman. He even showed advanced playmaking at the NBA combine scrimmages, something he had no chance of showing at UCLA.
30 Clippers: Andre Jackson Jr
Best Available (Next 15) for the Second Round: GG Jackson, Tristan Vukcevic, Rayan Rupert, Ben Sheppard, Marcus Sasser, Nick Smith Jr, Sidy Cissoko, Jaime Jacquez Jr, Isaiah Wong, James Nnaji, Oscar Tshiebwe, Maxwell Lewis, Jordan Miller, Jalen Wilson, and Emoni Bates

How can I win the title in Saudi?
I'm 47 points ahead of Verstappen at 349. There is Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi left. What are the requirements In order to win the title in Saudi?

2023.06.04 23:58 KingPenguinPhoenix Just finished Dragons Rising. I figured I'd give my first impressions of it.

The pros:
The animation. This is a Wildbrain constant. They keep one-upping themselves every season and I cannot express how much I love it here. Sure, there's one or two errors you notice here and there but DAMN, this thing is movie quality. The camera angles alone are stunning. Definitely a MAJOR highlight. I could gush about it for ages. Hope they keep pushing what they can do going forward.
I am so HAPPY the 22 minute format is back. I mean, I appreciated it before but man, do you not realise what you had until it's gone.
The intro is also pretty cool. Of course, the Weekend Whip trumps it but I'm just glad we got a song with an ACTUAL title sequence.
Kai finally got something to do after all this time. It's still not my favourite version of the character but man is this a HUGE improvement. This alone bumps the season up a couple ranks.
The new characters are all great. I could go into more detail but basically, the villains are all entertaining and the good guys all bring something new to the table.
The flashbacks (especially in the second half) are actually really emotional and fit into the themes of the episodes really well.
Favourite episodes are definitely 5, 6, 9 and 10.
On the lore side of things; I love the attention to detail this go around. Unlike some previous seasons cough season 11 cough, this new show very clearly wants to utilise the concept of the merged realms to its fullest potential while also bringing their audience in for the ride and I for one am very appreciative of the worldbuilding they're doing. I am digging the mysteries and new plot lines they're introducing and can't wait to see them get solved.
However, when it comes to addressing lore from the previous series, it's very hit or miss. Basically, episode 5 does the lore thing well while 4, 7, 9 and 10 kinda miss the mark (maybe they'll be addressed in part 2)
But this leads me to talk about the
Cons:
The pacing. Another Wildbrain constant. I've had issues with their pacing for a while but chalked it up to the 11 minute episodes. So you can imagine that it's a bit weird when they're making the same mistakes with the 22 minute ones. It's mostly a problem with the first half but man did this season start off ROUGH. It's like they couldn't really find their footing till episode 5/6.
The exposition/ passing of information is also hella clunky and kind of inconsistent at times.
*This is a nitpick but why is Kai's Spinjitsu yellow? Ain't that gonna be hella confusing going forward especially when Arin unlocks his own or if they bring Wu back?
The lore (yes I know I mentioned it as a positive but it goes both ways here). I'm not a big fan of how they're ALMOST retconning things like the Dragons (Firstbourne) and what not. It's like this season wants to pretend the Oni and Dragon trilogy didn't exist (like seriously Lloyd, mention you're part dragon to some of these guys to help things go smoother; what are you doing?) As said, it's good in some episodes, terrible in others.
The new powers. As much as I love Sora and Wyldfire, and I while I do appreciate that we kind of have an answer as to where they came from, I still can't help but think their powers are so creatively BANKRUPT. Was it really too hard to come up with new ones?
No mailman. -10/10 season (Just Kidding)
The split season. I don't know about you but I miss when we would get 2 seasons a year instead of one storyline chopped up into 2 for the sake of marketing or whatever. They better not pull a Crystalized with the release schedule again.
Overall, a good start and I'm definitely hooked to see where things go. I don't normally judge shows until the full season's out but for this first half, I think it's deserving of a solid 8/10

2023.06.04 23:41 Danthedude1 Ultimate ERB Poll results

Hey again, it's me, the guy who did that big poll 2 weeks back. I finally stopped procrastinating and compiled the results here (I meant to post this like a week ago, when the responses slowed down).
Anyway, thanks for the support on this! I got 90 responses, and the poll did much better than I thought it would. Here's the results:
(Below, the text in bold are the results, and the normal text are my comments. All percentages are calculated without the "Haven't watched" responses included, while the haven't watched percentages themselves are calculated with all votes counted. Remember that every question was required, so all questions had 90-91 votes). Hopefully my explanation isn't too terrible. If a percentage has a tilde (~) in front of it, the percent was rounded up to the nearest tenth.

John Lennon vs. Bill O'Reilly
Darth Vader vs. Adolf Hitler
Only one person said they didn't watch it. I checked the responses and the person who said that responded HW for 50% of the battles, so that's why. Not calling them out or anything, just thought you might be wondering
Abe Lincoln vs. Chuck Norris
Sarah Palin vs. Lady Gaga
Hulk Hogan and Macho Man vs. Kim Jong-Il
Justin Bieber vs. Beethoven:
With a percentage of 97.6%, Beethoven has the biggest slam dunk out of every battle on this list.
Albert Einstein vs. Stephen Hawking
Genghis Khan vs. Easter Bunny
Napoleon vs. Napoleon
Okay so at this point someone decided to submit a vote, so the results above are off by one vote. I'm not wasting my time changing it.
Billy Mays vs. Ben Franklin
Gandalf vs. Dumbledore
I believe this is the least watched battle. Apparently, more than 1/4 of this subreddit has not watched this battle
Dr. Seuss vs. Shakespeare
I'm assuming that Thing 1 and 2 drag down the team a lot.
Mr. T vs. Mr. Rogers
Christopher Columbus vs. Captain Kirk
NicePeter vs. EpicLLOYD
Hitler vs. Vader 2
Master Chief vs. Leonidas
Mario Bros vs. Wright Bros
Michael Jackson vs. Elvis Presley
Cleopatra vs. Marilyn Monroe
Steve Jobs vs. Bill Gates
This is the most balanced 1v1+1 battle. Kind of surprised that HAL got so many votes, I initially believed that people didn't like that part of the battle.
Frank Sinatra vs. Freddie Mercury
Barack Obama vs. Mitt Romney
This is the only battle in which everyone stated they had watched it. Makes sense, it is ERB's most viewed video
Doc Brown vs. Doctor Who
Bruce Lee vs. Clint Eastwood
Batman vs. Sherlock Holmes
I bet Robin would've done better if he were a standalone option.
Moses vs. Santa Claus
Adam vs. Eve
Gandhi vs. Martin Luther King Jr
Nikola Tesla vs. Thomas Edison
Babe Ruth vs. Lance Armstrong
Mozart vs. Skrillex
Rasputin vs. Stalin
This one. Actually suprised to see Lenin so high, I've never really seen anyone talk about his verse.
Hitler vs. Vader 3
With the trilogy complete, Darth Vader wins best of three 2-1.
Blackbeard vs. Al Capone
Miley Cyrus vs. Joan of Arc
Bob Ross vs. Pablo Picasso
Michael Jordan vs. Muhammed Ali
Donald Trump vs. Ebeneezer Scrooge
This one is weird. Meta-battles cause problems for polls because, well, do you need a winner for a story? I considered leaving this one out, and I also considered all the ghosts being put on one team, but I really just see these results as "Who had the best verse?", over who won the battle.
Rick Grimes vs. Walter White
Goku vs. Superman
Stephen King vs. Edgar Allen Poe
Sir Isaac Newton vs. Bill Nye
George Washington vs. William Wallace
Artists vs. TMNT
Ghostbusters vs. Mythbusters
Romeo and Juliet vs. Bonnie and Clyde
Zeus vs. Thor
Jack the Ripper vs. Hannibal Lecter
Oprah Winfrey vs. Ellen DeGeneres
Steven Spielberg vs. Alfred Hitchcock
Lewis and Clark vs. Bill and Ted
David Copperfield vs. Harry Houdini
I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure this is the most balanced battle. Nvm, there's a closer one.
Terminator vs. Robocop
Alright, we're moving onto East vs. West Philosophers. In the poll, I split it into two categories: teams and individual.
Eastern Philosophers vs. Western Philosophers (Team)
Eastern Philosophers vs. Western Philosophers (Solo)
So yeah, the Western Philosophers barely scrape the win both times. Also, an attentive reader will notice that the first part has 4 "Haven't watched" votes, while the other one has 5. Someone did the poll wrong.
Shaka Zulu vs. Julius Caesar
Jim Henson vs. Stan Lee
You might have noticed the weird haven't watched thing. It turns out, I accidentally left that question unrequired, so someone skipped the question, leaving it with only 90 responses. Due to the fact someone skipped, I assume they haven't watched.
Deadpool vs. Boba Fett
J. R. R. Tolkien vs. George R. R. Martin
Gordon Ramsey vs. Julia Child
Frederick Douglass vs. Thomas Jefferson
James Bond vs. Austin Powers
Bruce Banner vs. Bruce Jenner
Alexander the Great vs. Ivan the Terrible
Well, let's talk about Pompey. At the start, Pompey was leading the poll, however people seemed to vote normally after that. I have my reasons for including him (aka it was funny), though you might disagree and that's totally fine. I would probably upset more people if I excluded him in any case.
Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton
Ash Ketchum vs. Charles Darwin
Wonder Woman vs. Stevie Wonder
Tony Hawk vs. Wayne Gretsky
Theodore Roosevelt vs. Winston Churchill
Nice Peter vs. EpicLLOYD 2
This means that EpicLLOYD has won both times.
Elon Musk vs. Mark Zuckerberg
Freddy Krueger vs. Wolverine
Guy Fawkes vs. Che Guevara
Ronald McDonald vs. The Burger King
- Haven't watched: 6 votes (6.6%)
George Carlin vs. Richard Pryor
Once again, I included Bill Cosby for the same reason as Pompey. Cosby did better than 2 people, but none of them did very well anyway. This battle was mostly in contention between Rivers and Williams
Jacques Cousteau vs. Steve Irwin
Mother Teresa vs. Sigmund Freud
Vlad the Impaler vs. Count Dracula
The Joker vs. Pennywise
Thanos vs. J. Robert Oppenheimer
Donald Trump vs. Joe Biden
With that, all 3 election battles had the "winner" be the actual winner of the election. Curious.
Harry Potter vs. Luke Skywalker
Ragnar Lodbrok vs. Richard the Lionheart
Jeff Bezos vs. Mansa Musa
John Wick vs. John Rambo vs. John McClane
Lara Croft vs. Indiana Jones
And that's it. If you made it down here, congrats, you just absorbed a bunch of useless info. Thank you for taking the time to read. I might do something like this again in the future, with opinions on things other than the winners of the battles (things like best battle, season, rapper). But not for a while, considering how long it took to compile this data. Anyways, that's my time, gotta set myself free.

2023.06.04 22:21 collegegremlin MyNBA eras saved 2k for me

I’m in my 3rd year leading a Bird/Magic era Knicks team. I did a fantasy draft and ended up with Ralph Sampson and Larry Nance as my franchise pieces. It was the best I could do with the 13th pick. I traded picks with the suns and it turns out to be a shrewd move as they missed the playoffs and it turned into the 5th. So last year I added John Stockton as my point guard with the 5th pick somehow. This year I managed to pick up Detlef Schrempf and Charles Oakley in the draft after picking up some more draft picks through trades. My team is now a defensive powerhouse finishing 2nd in the east this past regular season. Larry Nance missed 4 months through injury too. I did make the playoffs first couple of years but not the finals so far. This feels like the year given the pieces on the team. Some other players I have are Cedric maxwell, Kyle Macy, and Darrell Griffith.
Just finished up a 4-1 first round win over the MJordan and Kareem led Bullets. I put my controller on CPU and watched the game 5 game just now on 5 min quarters.
Next up in the 2nd round I have the 96 overall Magic Johnson led Hawks. A good SF named Marques Johnson is on the team too but I think we beat ‘em.
I am kinda worried about the 1 seed 76ers next round with Bernard King and rookie Patrick Ewing. It’s a well rounded roster.
In the west, the big 2nd round match up is a 1 seed spurs with Julius Erving and James Worthy. Their playing a 4 seed Sonics that managed to draft Hakeem Olajuwon to go along with Kelly Tripucka and Rolando Blackman.

2023.06.04 21:51 Seadragon1983 A Timeline of Terror - A Shitpost about the Albany Empire and Antonio 'The Clown' Brown

With this week being Nuke Week (AKA Wild Card Week), I want to do something special here... and oh, boy. Do I have something special cooking here. This post might be a little esoteric since it does talk about the National Arena League, which is the third tier among the indoor football leagues out there (The IFL is top tier and CIF - Champions Indoor Football - is slightly ahead of them). But, this post about the Albany Empire - back-to-back NAL Champions and the final champion of the Arena League 2.0, and their new owner, Antonio Brown. His father, Arena League Hall of Fame legend 'Touchdown' Eddie Brown, is also here as the GM of the Empire. How this season has gone so far is the stuff of nightmares... and (hopefully) shitposting legends.
Let's begin on this timeline...
March 3rd - An announcement is made that Antonio Brown would join the Albany Empire as part owner and his father, 'Touchdown' Eddie Brown, would become the VP of Football Operations. Eddie is a Arena League legend, named to the list of the Top 20 players in Arena Football history in 2006. His name is synonymous with the Albany area - he helped lead the Firebirds (remember them?) to an Arenabowl victory. Local legends helping run the biggest powerhouse in the NAL? Oh, this is too good to be real...
April 6th - AB says he wants to move the team to Saratoga... must want to bet on the ponies or something. No big deal, I guess... except that the coach, Tom Menas, was ran out of town for some unknown reason. The offensive coordinator, Damon Ware, takes over. This will not be the last time you hear of Menas, trust me.
April 16th - Right before the regular season begins, the controversy begins. AB says he's the sole owner of the Empire, but one of the other owners, Mike Kwarta, said otherwise. He and AB each own 47.5% of the team while a minority owner owns the remaining 5%. AB says he paid $1.5 million in workers' comp insurance while Kwarta said "Wait a second... your math is way off, man. I've paid about half that for workers' comp insurance." While all of this going on, the Empire opened their regular season (they had a bye week in Week 1) with a dominating victory over the Orlando Predators (remember them??).
April 19th - Things are going to get complicated pretty quickly, so hang on tight and keep your arms and legs inside the roller coaster at all times. Let's begin... deep breath ...AB is now the sole majority owner of the Empire, buying the 47.5% share that Mike Kwarta owned for a $1 (Cue the guy from the original Robocop who would buy that for a dollar). This sounds all great and dandy... but, there's more to this then meets the eye.
May 1st - A day after a tough loss to the Carolina Cobras, shit hits the fan: The players haven't been paid since April 21st and the coach, who verified that, was also sent packing. Among the players not getting paid were WR Darius Prince, last season's league MVP and (at that time) league leader in TD catches at 10; QB Sam Castronova, who (at that time) lead the league with 241 passing yards per game; and defensive captains Brandon Sesay, Dwayne Hollis and Nick Haag. All of them (along with another player) were suspended due to an incident after the Carolina game - aggravated harassment. As for the payment issue? Well, that came from issues stemming from the processor after Kwarta and most of the front office left after that $1 deal to give AB majority ownership.
May 2nd - Guess who's back? Back again? Guess who's back? Back again?? Yep, it's Tom Menas - the coach who was given the boot before the season began - makes his return to try and turn around the 1-2 Empire in their quest for a three-peat.
May 3rd - Remember when I said there was more then meets the eye with the AB deal? Oh, this is where things get fun. Turns out he has nothing to do with the team - the team is under the control of the Antonio El-Allah Express Trust Enterprise, which is the domestic arm of the Antonio El-Allah Express Trust. Antonio El-Allah, a foreign national, is the trustee of this organization. A letter was sent to the Times-Union that reads:
“I Brown, Antonio Tavaris a foreign national but not a citizen of the United States at birth, am writing to you regarding recent reports that have been circulating in the media regarding my supposed ownership of the Albany Empire team," the letter begins. "I want to make it very clear that I am not the owner of this team, and any claims to the contrary are completely false."
Antonio Tavaris Brown is the full name of AB, but the whole foreign national thing? Yeah, that's false. Pro Football Resource mentions he was born in Miami to American parents and the rule they cited only applies under certain circumstances, all of which involve American Samoa and some place called Swains Island, which I've never heard of until now. And that trust? It's connected to another company, Big Boomin Investment Co. LLC, out of freaking DUBAI! This is something you see with real estate investments, not ownership of a professional football team. There must be some big ass skeletons in this closet.
While the ownership issues are going on, the team preps for their game with the West Texas Warbirds, one of two new members in the NAL this season. They're doing this without Damon Ware, who left the team to go to Orlando, and their QB Sam Castronova. He was one of the eight suspended players from that bus incident and left the team for Jacksonville (Keep an eye on this end, it'll be a big part of what's coming). Despite all this, Albany came close to winning but lost 41-38.
May 10th - Oh, there were minority owners as well. Let's meet the von Schillers, Charlotte and Steve. This couple were season ticket owners before they met up with Mike Kwarta and bought 5% of the team as a way to help grow the franchise's presence in the Capital Region. Since AB bought out Kwarta's share, it's been hell for the couple. They've been very negative to them and the von Schiller's do have a reason to question AB's motives: They wanted to make the best of having AB being part owner, and were hoping he would be a decent person (Oh, you poor naive souls...) and go from there. Well, it's gone downhill from here.
May 17th - In a move that even Narcissus would think was too much, AB plans to get on the field for their next home against the other newbie of the NAL, the Fayetteville (North Carolina) Mustangs. The rules states that there's nothing against a owner who wants to play... so, yeah. Go for it.
May 20th - Karma came in swiftly as Sam Castronova carved up his former team mates as he scored 6 touchdowns to lead Jacksonville to a 79-34 routing of Albany. This ass kicking was so bad that Menas was shit canned a 2nd time in a season. He's replaced by a high school coach in Pete Porcelli, who played in Albany back in the days of the original Arena League.
May 23rd - Jonathan Bane, a recent addition to the team who was over-matched against Jacksonville the week before, leaves the team thanks in large part to the lack of structure, communication and professionalism on the team (No... the hell you say)
May 27th - AB does suit up... in the Barney Stinson style of suiting up. Yes, he doesn't play at all as the Empire fall to the expansion Mustangs 49-27. The Empire, back-to-back NAL Champions, are now 1-5 on the season. Things cannot get any worst, can they? Oh, yes they can!
May 29th - The debut for Porcelli was also his last game as an associate of AB basically told him that he was demoted to line coach. Porcelli told him to eat a bag of dicks and left the team. AB caught wind of this and let that associate know in simple terms that he's not supposed to do that.
June 1st - Man #4, come on down! You've been selected to play 'Who wants to coach this shit show?' with your host, AB! Man #4 is Terry Foster, the defensive coordinator for the Iowa Barnstomers (remember them???) in the IFL. If his defensive coordinator skills are anything (dead last in scoring defense, dead last in rushing defense, dead last in passing efficiency defense and dead last in overall defense), then Albany is bound to be in a world of pure hurt.
Friday (Yes, this recent Friday) - AB just can't stop doing stupid shit. He gets tossed from the Holiday Inn the team is staying at over loud music and the sweet, sweet stink of weed. He sent a video to the Times-Union saying that he got kicked out of the Holiday Inn Marriott (surefire sign of being high on that wacky tobaccy, if you ask me) and saying that he was trespassing, even though he's been there for 60 days. He then sent a longer text talking about how he was friendly with the owner of said Holiday Inn and thanks to a “mutual love for the city and growing business.” (read: I'm rich, please give me free shit), the owner allowed AB and the Empire to stay at the hotel. Well, things have gotten sour with the hotel as he claims that he was "bombarded" by the hotel staff and the police without any warning, conversation or professionalism (Ha... this clown complaining about a lack of professionalism... Ha). To add more into this brewing putrid pot of shit, one of AB's associates sent a text to the Times-Union saying that "our attorneys will be reaching out soon to … the Times Union for misleading and false advertisement. Just FYI.” Oh, by the way... this is all going on during their bye week.

2023.06.04 21:23 Binx_Thackery What I want to see in the final season

With the next season of Cobra Kai being the final one, I wanted to share some things that I hope happen.
  1. Miguel gets a big win. Since the show started with Johnny and Miguel, it needs to end with them. Miguel hasn't had a big win for several seasons. This doesn't necessarily need to be him winning the Sekai Taikai, but it does need to be one with a strong emotional impact.
  2. Kreese redemption. Silver going to prison makes sense for his character, but I have more empathy for Kreese. I feel he deserves a shot at a redemption arc. Throughout the show, we see why the way he is. He does seem to make small amounts of growth, but I think he needs more. A redemption also fits with the show's themes, and I think redeeming the main villain would hammer these themes home.
  3. Less focus on side characters. The side characters are great in this show, but I want to see more focus on a smaller number of characters. The ones I think deserve the most focus are Miguel, Johnny and Robby.
These are my big three points. Does anyone else have things they want to see?

2023.06.04 20:52 proteinstyle_ Opinion for Soft Summer?

Opinion for Soft Summer?
I really like these sweaters, and would typically go for 4, 5, 7, 9. However, I'm trying to move away from my usual basic colors, and lean more into my season. I believe that I am a Soft Summer, dirty blonde/light brown hair with green eyes. Very light skin with neutral - cool undertones. My skin does tend to get pink in sun/stress situations. I'm curious if anyone could give an opinion on which colors would work best given this info? Thanks!

2023.06.04 18:56 Antique_Area_2377 I love season one

I know seasons 3 and 4 are very popular. But there’s something so nostalgic and raw and good about the first season.
It’s the one I always go back to.
It’s so bizarre to watch it now, in my thirties.
Some takeaways:
I miss Haley’s OG quirky, sarcastic, rambling personality.
Peyton’s season one hair is my favorite.
Sophia Bush is so pretty. Even though I’m not a huge fan of early Brooke, or Sophia in general, she’s really talented.
Nathan was the absolute worst. Like the absolute worst. It’s so easy to forget how terrible he was when NALEY becomes a thing, but the hit and run and the other stuff, is just awful.
Dan should get over himself. It’s almost comical how pathologically obsessive and creepy he is. It’s pathetic.
Brooke was so manipulative at first. Like that whole thing in Life in a Glass House, where she’s trying to put Nathan and Peyton together, and says stupid things like: “You know you two are meant to be together.”
Peyton’s brooding can be a little over the top. Sometimes I get the vibe from her that she’s the only one who has any reason to be upset about anything.
Brooke and Peyton’s friendship doesn’t make sense. Not because they’re opposites, but because they don’t communicate, especially about their feelings for Lucas.
Deb was a badass at first.
I wonder what it would be like if Keith had taken an interest in protecting Nathan like he did Lucas. Like I know he was in love with Karen, but I’d be more worried about the son being raised by Dan than the one who was abandoned. And clearly Nathan demonstrates that.
Every Night is Another Story is an underrated episode.

2023.06.04 18:48 sandman730 CBA Basics

This is based on the CBA, MOU, and various CapFriendly FAQs.
If you have any questions, feel free to comment, or message me.
Note: Various games played thresholds for may be pro-rated due to the shortened 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons. Consult CapFriendly or message me if you have any questions.
All dates below are tentative. Check the schedule for more up-to-date information.

Salary Cap

The upper limit is $83.5M (projected), and the lower limit is $61.0M (projected). Though you are allowed to exceed the upper limit by 10% in the offseason, we will require you to have a plan for how to get back under the cap by the end of the sim.
Resources:

Contracts

For the sake of simplifying contracts, all contract negotiations and signings will be done using average annual value (AAV). Salary structure and signing bonuses will not be considered, with the exceptions of complying with minimum salaries ($775k for the 2023-24 season and beyond) and maximum salaries (an AAV equal to 20% of the current salary cap upper limit).

Basic Definitions

Contract & Roster Limits

During the regular season (before the day of the Trade Deadline) each team may have a maximum of 23 players on their Active Roster, and a minimum of 18 skaters and 2 goalies.
Each club may have a maximum of 50 SPCs, and must have a minimum of 24 players and 3 goalkeepers. In this sim, we will also require each team to have at least 40 SPCs by the end. Players who meet the following conditions do not count towards this contract limit:
  1. Are 18 or 19 years old
  2. Are in a junior league
  3. Have not played 11 NHL games in one season
Note: the roster sheets currently assume every player eligible for this exemption is assigned to Juniors. If you wish to have that player(s) on your opening day roster, please ask me to correct this (as it will affect the number of contract slots you have available).
A club's reserve list (signed players, unsigned draft picks, and defected players) may not exceed 90 players.
Resources:

Buried Contracts

For one-way NHL contracts of players reassigned to the AHL, the players' salary cap hit, minus the sum of the minimum NHL salary (for the respective season) and $375k, still counts towards the team’s salary cap total. This implies up to $1.15M can be buried this season per contract.
If a player signs a multi-year contract at 35 years or older (as of June 30 prior to the effective contract), the player's individual cap hit counts against the teams cap hit regardless of whether, or where, the player is active. However, a team will receive a $100k relief off of the team's salary cap hit, if a 35+ contract player is playing in the minor leagues after the first year of their contract.

Entry-Level Contracts

Players younger than 25 as of September 15 of the year of their first NHL contract must sign an ELC, all of which are two-way contracts with a maximum AAV of $950k (players drafted in 2022) or $925k (players drafted prior to 2022). The length of an ELC depends on the player's age:
European players (players drafted from a team outside North America or undrafted players) ages 25-27 must sign a one-year ELC.
If a player signed to an ELC is 18 or 19 years old, and does not play in a minimum of 10 NHL games (including both regular season and playoffs), their contract is considered to "slide", or extend, by one year. Signing bonuses do not slide, which can change the AAV of the player's contract.
Resources:

Contract Length

Clubs may sign a player to an SPC with a term of up to 8 years only if that player was on such club's Reserve List as of and since the most recent Trade Deadline. For UFAs, this right expires when the player hits free agency (i.e., on Sun. June 25th, 11:59pm ET). Otherwise, the term limit for SPCs is 7 years.

No-Trade Clauses

A No-Move Clause (NMC), No-Trade Clause (NTC), or Modified No-Trade Clause (M-NTC) can be added to a player's contract in the years after they are eligible as a Group 3 player (7 accrued seasons or 27 years old). These clauses restrict the player from being traded without his consent. An NMC also restricts a player from being placed on waivers and being assigned to minors without his consent. These clauses do not exempt a player from a buyout or contract termination.

Performance Bonuses

Clubs may pay players that meet one of the following criteria a performance bonus:
  1. The player is on an ELC.
  2. The player has signed a one-year contract and is over 35 years old.
  3. The player has signed a one-year contract after returning from a long-term injury (has played 400 or more games, and spent 100 or more days on the Injured Reserve in the last year of their most recent contract).
Performance bonuses count against the cap, however a team can only exceed the upper limit by a maximum of 7.5% (the overage of which counts towards the next season's cap hit).
Resources:

Group 6 Unrestricted Free Agents

A player whose contract is expiring and meets all of the following conditions shall become a Group 6 UFA:
  1. The player is 25 years or older (as of June 30th).
  2. The player has completed 3 or more professional seasons - qualified by 11 or more professional games (for an 18/19 year old player), or 1 or more professional games (for a player 20 or older) while under an SPC.
  3. The player has played fewer than 80 NHL games for a skater, or 28 NHL games of 30 minutes or greater for a goaltender.

Restricted Free Agents

Qualifying Offers

A qualifying offer (QO) is an official one-year SPC offer. Clubs have until Sun. June 25th, 5pm ET to submit their QOs. Submitting a QO gives the club the right of first refusal to match any offer sheet submitted, or receive draft pick compensation. If the player rejects the qualifying offer, they remain a RFA and their rights are retained by the club. If a player does not receive a qualifying offer, he becomes a UFA.
A minimum QO is calculated from the player's base salary (excluding all bonuses) as follows:
The QO must be a one-way offer if the following three requirements are met (a goaltender is considered to have played a game if they are on the bench as a backup):
  1. The player played in 180 NHL games in the previous three seasons.
  2. The player played in 60 NHL games in the previous season.
  3. The player did not clear waivers in the previous season.
Qualifying offers expire on Wed. July 12th, 5pm ET.
Note: If an RFA has signed a contract in another league, the NHL club may extend a QO to retain that player's rights. These players are marked on the roster sheets as signed in another league.
Resources:

Offer Sheet Compensation

Only Group 2 and 4 RFAs may be signed to an offer sheet. However, clubs only receive draft pick compensation for Group 2 RFAs.
Compensation must be entirely in the next draft (for this sim: 2024), unless multiple of the same round of pick are required (e.g. two first rounders). In that case, you may skip one year (e.g. two 1sts could be 2023 and 2024 OR 2023 and 2025 OR 2024 and 2025).
Compensation is determined by the AAV outlined in the offer made by submitting club. The AAV for an offer sheet, which determines the compensation required, is derived by dividing the total contract value amount by the lesser of: number of years offered, or 5 years. The AAV thresholds are readjusted each season, and is based on the average league salary for that season.
Compensation for the 2022 offseason is as follows:
AAV (1-5 years) AAV (6 years) AAV (7 years) Compensation
$1,386,490 or less $1,155,408 or less $990,350 or less No compensation
$1,386,491 - $2,100,742 $1,155,409 - $1,750,618 $990,351 - $1,500,530 One 3rd Round Pick
$2,100,743 - $4,201,488 $1,750,619 - $3,501,240 $1,500,531 - $3,001,063 One 2nd Round Pick
$4,201,489 - $6,302,230 $3,501,241 - $5,251,858 $3,001,064 - $4,501,593 One 1st Round Pick, One 3rd Round Pick
$6,302,231 - $8,402,975 $5,251,859 - $7,002,479 $4,501,594 - $6,002,125 One 1st Round Pick, One 2nd Round Pick, One 3rd Round Pick
$8,402,976 - $10,503,720 $7,002,480 - $8,753,100 $6,002,126 - $7,502,657 Two 1st Round Picks, One 2nd Round Pick, One 3rd Round Pick
$10,503,721 or more $8,753,101 or more $7,502,658 or more Four 1st Round Picks
The club that receives an Offer Sheet has 7 days to match the offer or accept the draft pick compensation. If the receiving club matches the Offer Sheet, they are bound to the contract details outlined in the offer, must respect all aspects of the contract (such as any NTCs), and cannot trade that player for 1 year from the date of the contract signing.
Resources:

Buyouts

Teams are permitted to buyout a player's contract to obtain a reduced salary cap hit over a period of twice the remaining length of the contract. The buyout amount is a function of the players age at the time of the buyout, and are as follows:
The team still takes a cap hit, and the cap hit by year is calculated as follows:
  1. Multiply the remaining salary (excluding signing bonuses) by the buyout amount (as determined by age) to obtain the total buyout cost
  2. Spread the total buyout cost evenly over twice the remaining contract years
  3. Determine the savings by subtracting the annual buyout cost from Step 2. by the player's salary (excluding signing bonuses)
  4. Determine the remaining cap hit by subtracting the savings from Step 3. by the player's AAV (including signing bonuses)
A player can only be bought out after clearing unconditional waivers. A waiver-claim by another team pre-empts the buyout process. If a player has a no-movement clause, the player can reject the option of waivers and proceed directly to the buyout process.
A 35+ contract that is bought out receives no salary cap relief. An injured player (who was injured as a result of his job) is entitled his remaining salary, so long as such injury continues, and therefore cannot be bought out.

When a player is reassigned from the NHL to another league, they must pass through waivers (unless they are exempt).
Waivers requests are processed each day at 2pm ET, and are subject to a 24 hour claim period, expiring at 2pm ET the following day.
The sim will have two waivers windows: unconditional waivers (for a buyouts) runs from Mon. June 19th until Sun. June 25th and the normal waiver window will run from Thu. August 3rd until Sat. August 12th.
Waivers priority is determined by the lowest percentage of possible standings points at the time of the waivers request (or when outside the regular season or through October 31st by the standings of the previous season). Tie breakers: lowest ROW percentage, fewest number of points in head-to-head games (excluding "odd games"), lowest goal differential per game. Therefore, waivers priority throughout the sim is as follows:
Order Team Order Team Order Team
1 ANA 12 OTT 22 MIN
2 CBJ 13 BUF 23 LAK
3 CHI 14 PIT 24 NYR
4 SJS 15 NSH 25 DAL
5 MTL 16 FLA 26 COL
6 ARI 17 CGY 27 EDM
7 PHI 18 NYI 28 VGK
8 WSH 19 WPG 29 TOR
9 DET 20 TBL 30 NJD
10 STL 21 SEA 31 CAR
11 VAN 32 BOS

Waiver Exemptions

Age is defined as follows:
For players 20 years or older, the year in which they play their first professional game under NHL contract is their first year towards the waiver exemption.
Whichever comes first in this table indicates when a player is no longer exempt:
Age Years from Signing (Skaters) NHL Games Played (Skaters) Years from Signing (Goalies) NHL Games Played (Goalies)
18 5 160 6 80
19 4 160 5 80
20 3 160 4 80
21 3 80 4 60
22 3 70 4 60
23 3 60 3 60
24 2 60 2 60
25+ 1 1
There is an exception (to the above) for 18 and 19 year olds: if a skater plays 11 NHL games or more, the year exemption will reduce to 3, and the following two season will count against this regardless of games played. For goalies, the year exemption will reduce to 4, and the following three season will count against this regardless of games played.
Otherwise:
  1. A player does not need to pass through waivers if he has not been on the NHL active roster for a cumulative 30 days since last clearing waivers, and has not played in 10 or more NHL games.
  2. Any player who has consented to a Conditioning Loan can be loaned to a minor league club for a maximum of 14 days without passing through waivers.
  3. A player who was previously on long-term injured reserve (LTIR), may be loaned to a minor league club for a maximum of 6 days or 3 games for the purpose of determining if the player is fit to play. This player does not need to pass through waivers
Examples of players that do or do not require waivers.
Resources:

Long Term Injured Reserve

There are two approaches to use LTIR for cap relief:
  1. Put the player on LTIR before the season starts. You can be over at the start of the season, but only get relief for how much the contract is over at the time he is placed on LTIR. Note: offseason cap accounting applies.
  2. Put the player on LTIR after the start of the season. You need to be under the cap at the beginning of the season, but get full relief.
The LTIR salary relief cannot be used to pay bonuses. Any excess relief does not accumulate.
At this point, the following players are eligible for LTIR: Ryan Ellis (PHI), Gabriel Landeskog (COL), Bryan Little (ARI), Carey Price (MTL), Brent Seabrook (TBL), and Shea Weber (ARI). GMs can petition the commissioners to add players to this list, including relevant information such as the player, injury, and timeline for return.
Resources:

Retained Salary Transactions

When a team trades a player, they have the option to retain a part of his salary (and cap hit). The team who retains the salary pays the retained percentage of the salary, and retains the percentage of the cap hit (until the contract expires). The following requirements must be met:
  1. The percentage retained cannot exceed 50% of the player’s salary (including all bonuses) and cap hit.
  2. The same percentage must be retained for both the player’s salary and cap hit, and cannot be modified year-to-year. As a result, the same amount must be retained through the remainder of the contract.
  3. All teams are limited to a maximum of 3 retained salary contracts per season.
  4. Teams cannot retain an aggregate amount of more than 15% of the Salary Cap Upper Limit.
  5. Players’ contracts are limited to 2 retained salary transactions per contract.
Once a retained salary transaction occurs, there are various limitations:
Such transactions will require a compelling explanation.

Salary Arbitration

We are not doing salary arbitration as part of this sim. If you feel that a GM and/or agent is negotiating for an RFA in bad faith, contact a commissioner.

Miscellaneous

Performance bonuses count against the cap, however a team can only exceed the upper limit by a maximum of 7.5% (the overage of which counts towards the next season's cap hit).
Teams may not commit more salary to next season than 110% the current salary cap (i.e. exceed their tagging space).
Players claimed off waivers cannot be traded to another club (until the termination of Playoffs of the season in which he was acquired) unless he is first offered on the same terms to the club(s) that previously issued a claim (and the offer has been refused).
If you have any questions, feel free to comment below or DM sandman730. If we need to clarify some things, we will do so.
