2023.06.11 00:14 krill_ep My laptop doesn't like Linux?

Been trying to install other distros on my laptop. Had Manjaro XFCE on for a while with no issues, but I didn't get to use it that much, so it's a low test amount lol. But after format, not a single distro works properly of the ones I've tried.. Windows works perfectly fine it seems.
Distros I've tried so far -
Manjaro XFCE & Plasma - shop/package manager won't open at all PopOs - works on initial install and first boot, then gets stuck on some grey screen after that Linux Mint - same as above. flawless installation, then refuses to get past the green LM post image Debian - flawless install. Shop/Package Manager is pretty borked, all installs hang or outright fail. Fixed momentarily by reinstalling packages or something like that via terminal, but happens again after installing an app or two - also says something about flatpak distribution server or so not being able to be reached (internet and browser seems to work fine beyond that)
Right now I've gone back to Windows 11 on it, which works with zero issues, so I don't think anything is wrong with the computer itself. I have no idea personally what on earth could be wrong, which is why I'm here. Also tried installing with different USB sticks
Laptop model is a Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05H AMD Ryzen 5 4600H 16 GB DDR4 (2 x 8 GB) 512 GB SSD - NVMe 6 GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 / AMD Radeon Graphics

2023.06.11 00:13 AngstyReptilian Suggestions? Neighbors kid is lonely and knocking on our door

Background: I'm an adult living in a single story apartment complex. One of our neighboring tenants has a 4-5 year old girl that has started to knock on our door everyday to have small talk as I am generally very approachable to kids for some reason. She has brothers and used to play with the other boy tenants from the other families but it seems this Summer they aren't doing things with her anymore from what I gathered and now she's pretty much being left on her own. I've tried to limit conversations to about 5 minutes the past few days since this started but then she seems to leave and then come back and knock again a few minutes after we finish our conversation to which I tell I'm busy and eventually start to ignore the door. This same process begins again the next day.
Advice?: I know I'm probably going to have to tell her parents to stop this which I know I can do; however, I don't like the idea that I'm just pushing away a child whose doing this because she's lonely. She's too young for me to suggest to her parents that they drop her off at the nearby Boys & Girls club so I'm just looking for win-win suggestions that I can have a good conscious with.

2023.06.11 00:12 SimplyHobbit Is there anything my mom could possibly use for a desktop pc setup? (other than what I have listed)

I'm trying to make her setup as perfect as humanly possible. Tryna make her a really dope perfect mac desktop battlestation. She's already got a top of the line beautiful white desk that she loves. And I'm giving her my 2015 macbook pro when I go up to visit her next month to use as a desktop mac until I can afford to buy her a mac mini later this year. And before anyone mentions anything about getting her a mac mini...she's a boomer who barely knows how to use technology or the internet. So a mac for her is much much more simpler and easy to use. If it were someone who actually knew how to use technology and/or the internet I would probably recommend a windows machine every time for a desktop pc setup. But not someone who doesn't know how to use the internet and technology. Anyway, this is what I have gotten for her so far (or plan to get her for sure in the future) for her mac desktop setup: 1. She already has the perfect keyboard for what she needs

A white headphones holder that will stick on somewhere on her desk to go with her white desk (And eventually I'm going to buy her really nice headphones) question though...do you guys think some kind of other headphones holding arrangement would look better? Her headphones are big over eard wired headphones and always will be cuz that's what she prefers (Don't have this yet)
Eventually when I can afford it I will be getting her the best 1080p monitor that is as color accurate and nice as possible, and as big as possible that will fit on her desk (Then later upgrade her to a very color accurate 4K one, don't have either monitors yet though)
A nice computer chair (Don't have this yet)
High speed HDMI cable (already got her this)
Top of the line monitor headphones (already got her this)
An audio interface for maximum sound quality for her headphones (already got her this)
4 Port USB Hub (So in case in the future she ever needs to plug extra stuff into her computer she can, already got her this)
An apple cloth & a spray bottle filled distilled water (Because these are the best possible things to clean electronics with, already got her this)
The best standard sized wireless mouse that I could find (The MX Anywhere 3S in Black, already got her this. It's great because the specs say it lasts around 60 to 70 days on a single charge which is perfect for her)
A top of the line really big deskpad (already got her this)
A new nicer looking surge protector (And for safety cuz I think hers is extremely old, already got her this)
Might want to look into her wearing some kind of blue light or computer protection glasses to prevent eye strain for her eye health cuz her eyes are bad (I need to research this more though)

My son's 11 and is fairly mature and responsible for his age. He uses the oven and stove safely and knows not to go to the door if we're not expecting company. When he's in school he gets off the bus about an hour and a half before I get off of work and we check in with each other while he's home alone.
But this is our first summer with me having sole custody so without school, he's alone for 8-10 hours while I work. One of our neighbors knows and promises he keeps an eye on the house (meaning every now and then he looks out his window to make sure it's not like on fire or anything) but I don't like my kid being by himself for so long. Even if he's safe and capable of taking care of himself, it seems like I'm setting him up to just sit around and play on his phone or video games all day. I give him little chores and he usually does them but I just don't feel good about this. Right now there isn't anyone in our life I trust to stay with him so until I find someone, am I a terrible parent for leaving him like this?

My Starter Pokemon = 💧🐢
Just started playing "PokeMMO" , I dreamed of a game like this growing up, imagining what if trainers in the game zones could be other players who were also playing in real time from around the world? And now it is a reality.... this game has been around for a few years so I imagine it's only become more polished over time. There's a few other online Pokemon games but this is the best of them all for sure , it runs off the files of 4 different titles so the graphics & gameplay are just like the official games and it combines travel between different regions. Pretty amazing, you can Trade and Battle with other real players, there's an economy for collecting different Pokemon types, there's tournaments...
You can find it on the App Stores as literally "PokeMMO". The only slightly difficult part to getting the game going is a small bit of downloading the needed ROM files that PokeMMO asks you to connect to the app during setting up the game before playing. There are other videos on YouTube (search PokeMMO + ROMS for example) or on Google, Reddit etc. if you have any trouble or questions on how get the game working for you.
PokeMMO should work on Windows, Android, iOS, Linux and Mac. I thought most people would enjoy playing on their phones Gameboy style (especially with a controller shell like GameSir or Razer Kishi, Xbox One controllers, etc.) but getting it working for the first time may be easier to acomplish on a desktop machine before your phone if you haven't tinkered around with getting games working on your phone. It really isn't that difficult though.

Just started playing "PokeMMO" , I dreamed of a game like this growing up, imagining what if trainers in the game zones could be other players who were also playing in real time from around the world? And now it is a reality.... this game has been around for a few years so I imagine it's only become more polished over time. There's a few other online Pokemon games but this is the best of them all for sure , it runs off the files of 4 different titles so the graphics & gameplay are just like the official games and it combines travel between different regions. Pretty amazing, you can Trade and Battle with other real players, there's an economy for collecting different Pokemon types, there's tournaments...
You can find it on the App Stores as literally "PokeMMO". The only slightly difficult part to getting the game going is a small bit of downloading the needed ROM files that PokeMMO asks you to connect to the app during setting up the game before playing. There are other videos on YouTube (search PokeMMO + ROMS for example) or on Google, Reddit etc. if you have any trouble or questions on how get the game working for you.
PokeMMO should work on Windows, Android, iOS, Linux and Mac. I thought most people would enjoy playing on their phones Gameboy style (especially with a controller shell like GameSir or Razer Kishi, Xbox One controllers, etc.) but getting it working for the first time may be easier to acomplish on a desktop machine before your phone if you haven't tinkered around with getting games working on your phone. It really isn't that difficult though.

I have a cat (4 to F, have had her for 3 years)
For the ~2 year I had her, we lived in a house of 23 (only saw 7 ppl consistently) and she stayed in my bedroom and the hallway mainly. Was content
The third year I moved to an apartment in a city. Couldn’t open the windows bc no screens and high up, no trees. Had a roommate who never played or hung out with her and kept her bedroom shut. She did fine
Now we moved again, a year later ish. I’ve been in the new place for ~5 weeks. I live alone now but it’s same area size as old place barring the roommates room she didn’t get to go into.
She can see me thru the window when i leave bc i have to walk by it outside. She’s meowing and crying and whining at the door whenever I’m here even after play. She’s now scratching the rug. I got kicker toys, the robot w the feather for when i’m gone. I have a 7ft cat tree and a 4 ft tall cat tree. 3 windows that overlook an area w a little more foliage and people walking by. She has unlimited dry food and wet can in the AM.
I can’t get her to stop meowing at the door or to not act like… a cat brat? I have no idea what to do. After first two weeks had the yearly vet appt and she said it’s normal and offered the mist with the cat smelling calm hormone.
1 week ago my long distance partner was here and she still did it but considerably less. he worked remotely.
I can’t be home more than I am given a student in the medical field. I have no idea what to do
The vet said theoretically another cat could just be worse and less social.
Any ideas?
I have a cat harness and leash and she gets frozen whenever i take her out. and she’s afraidddd of big dogs and my area is full of them

I originally thought getting curtains to cover our balcony windows and doors would be a quick solution. I have quickly (and slowly) learned that doing curtains instead of blinds requires a lot of more thought than picking fabrics. I now come to HomeDecorating, a humble home owner, a person who cannot hammer their way out of this project, with some plans and many questions. I am happy that I learned what I have, but I want to make sure I make the correct decisions, because the quotes I've gotten for a company doing all of this for us are steep. I could afford getting someone to take on this project, but fiscal priorities fall to a newborn, so I hope with some guidance I can still do this on my own.
The area in question can be seen here. The width, outside trim to outside trim, is 113" and the height, exterior trim to floor is 100". I plan on having the curtain rod affixed outside the trim and there are four inches between the balcony trim and the ceiling molding to accommodate mounting hardware. Ideally, I want double layered curtains that split in the middle.
Curtain rod (120 - 170") in 1" diameter. Explanation: The minimum distance to cover is the 113" width, but the rules I've read state to go three to six inches beyond your width to make your open space look bigger. So with this option, I have this telescoping rod at its minimum. I need to make sure the rod comes with a center support, but not worried about the curtains having to cross it since I am looking to pull the layers to their respective sides to open up.
Sheer curtains for the first layer (4 panels, 50" width x 99" height). Explanation: this is a custom build from pottery barn for which I'd select 50" width at about 99" length which is about the sum of the height (trim to stoop) plus the height to the hardware. I'll check the numbers for height once again when I finalize my pick on the hardware. The max width of these curtains is 50" and based on rules we want about 2x the opening so I would get four of these.
Curtains for the second layer (2 panels, 84" width x 101" height). Explanation: for the height, we're looking to have them longer than the sheer layer, but not touching the floor so looking at length of 101" or so. For the width, the rule again is to have 2x the width of the opening in panels, so I would order the 114" panels, but I don't want a lot of excess on the sides, hiding the trim and windows. I think 1.5x width would be okay, so I would rather get the 84" width.
I am really new to this world and still learning (gladly before making any purchases). I tried my best to pick out a good installation for the materials given the space I have to work with. My questions about these picks are are there any considerations I missed when choosing lengths/heights of the individual parts? Are there any recommendations folks would make from their own experiences? This approach would save me about a fifth of the cost of going with a service so I would really like to make it work.

I'm a diehard survival horror fan, but I never play many horror games. I've been watching the entire Alien franchise recently and Alien (1979) has stayed with me ever since. After finishing the films, I wanted more, and I remembered that I had bought this game a long time ago, when it was on sale for peanuts.
I have memories of when the game was first released, and people were sharing gameplay footage of the Xenomorph, and generally showing off the stealth mechanics. But this was all I knew about it. I knew SEGA published it, but I was very surprised to see that the developers at Creative Assembly created a completely different franchise, the Total War franchise. It appeared that this game was a one-off in this genre, and the team responsible left the company in future years.
My first impression was that I was stunned by the design of the Torrens. I also loved the film noise filter, although I did have to dial it down to about 60-70% for clarity in darker areas. The FOV at its default was extremely claustrophobic, and I learnt to leave it at 47 as while higher and wider FOV settings looked 'cool' and cinematic, I preferred limiting my vision in a game such as this. My general rule for survival horror games is for them to be as hard as possible. For this reason I chose the hardest difficulty, 'Hard'. It turns out that due to an oddly specific bug when connected to a PlayStation controller via DS3/DS4 Windows, 'Novice' and 'Nightmare' mode do not appear. I thought it was a mode I had to unlock by beating the game first.
Every level in the game is stunning. From the lighting, to the doors, to the vents, to the array of technology plastering the walls. This game felt like Alien, but not only that, it felt more 'Ridley Scott' than 'James Cameron'. The sound design is exceptional, and the music was delightful with it's reprisal of Jerry Goldsmith's original motifs.
My favorite visual aspect from the get-go, was the cumbersome technology used, such as the Motion Tracker, and the low-resolution analog displays. I later read an interview in which the developers describe how they played their CGI graphics through a VCR and BetaMax, and then filmed the CRT television screen - including all tape-warbles, and other such analog artifacts. Incredible. The hacking 'mini-games', if you will, were always delightful.
I don't wish to get too into detail with the combat and the characters, as these two aspects for me are never at the heart of a survival horror game - where as for other genres, they most certainly are. I found most of the voice cast to be exceptional, particularly Ripley, and the various characters in the Seegson computer terminals. I am not sure if I can judge the shooting and the general combat, as I barely utilized it. In fact, I ended up with maxed out utilities for the entire game.
This gets me on to the difficulty. I suppose I have the patience for survival horror, as I found that 'Hard' mode was simply too kind on item pick-ups. I wished I had fewer of everything, including health, so there was more tension in the game. I will absolutely be playing the game again in 'Nightmare' mode. Nevertheless, there are still moments in the game that royally nailed me. Particular areas in which there are four orange jumpsuit mega-synthetics, who I did not know how to kill successfully until it was far too late. There are also many routes towards the end of the game, in which multiple Xenomorphs are hunting you. As for the AI and the Xenomorph, I couldn't possible say more than what has presumably already been said.
The story was fairly light, as there is really no room for grand or complex, multi-weaving narrative in a game like this. Take the first four Resident Evil games, they all have roughly the same narrative arc in relation to gameplay story beats, or stages if you will. I wish I could have kept on-track of the stories developing in the Seegson computer terminals, but the game was so tense it was very difficult to relax, read, and digest a terminal log. The game took me 28 hours to play, which, might seem like a lot. But I crouch walked through almost the entirety of the game. Why? Because I thought the Xenomorph would hear me if I walked, as it is fairly brisk walking. Turns out I was wrong. Alas. But what it meant was that it brought up tension to an absolute 11, and I also had a lot of time to just soak in the environments of each area. Also tension. Always more stress and tension. I again later read criticisms that the game was "too long", and simply "unforgiving". But honestly, the fact that it kept going on and on is what I enjoy so much about these games. It is certainly my cup of tea, and I am glad it took 28 hours, spread out over several weeks. Grueling, but utterly intoxicating. To push back on criticisms of the length, I appreciate the way in which the game transitioned you from stage to stage, and feel that there were plenty of exhilarating 'set-pieces' that maintained my engagement with gameplay that may on the surface appear repetitive or monotonous.
Several other details stuck with me, and that is every lever you pull, and every plane you remove with an ion torch. As the game, and others like it, is skeletal by nature, details like this help excite the player in doing what are otherwise ordinary tasks. Within the context of the gameplay, they can be nail-bitingly tense. The animations and sound design are also always exceptional across the board.
I'm not going to ask if there are "other games like this" because I already know the answer. I've been there before with Disco Elysium, with Darkwood, with Pathologic 2, and now Alien Isolation.

2023.06.10 23:40 LH_Suzuki VR Settings Help (Quest 2)

I have an i7-7700k and an RX6600, 32 GB of RAM - I know I should be getting good enough performance in iRacing VR, and the sim runs smoothly at 90 Hz with 1.7x on the quest software (I've tried to keep a lot of settings low for now to get it how I want before I bump anything up).
I've used the iRacing VR guides extensively, countless youtube videos etc. but the one thing I CANNOT get rid of is the "heat haze" effect that seems to exist on the fences/grass banks/horizon/the upcoming corner at the end of the straight.
I'm using openXR and most guides I see seem to emphasize sharpness so I've got that at 100% with the resolution in openXR to 50%. I also saw a guide say that the sharpening clamp being too far can make the horizon jagged so I reduced that but no difference. I'm really not sure what is causing it. I'd be grateful if anyone can help - I can provide more info. as required but have also put in my .ini settings and my oculus debugger settings. I am also unsure on my AMD software settings but I can't really post those.

I know I’m probably in the minority here, but I’ve always preferred mac to windows for a variety of reasons. And now that apple has released a game porting toolkit for devs and has powerful enough computers to game, I’d love to be able to simplify my setup to just one system, and it’d open the door for more people to get the game. Any chance the devs could consider a macos port?
Edit: any doubters should watch this video. If a macbook pro can run cyberpunk at max settings at 40fps through a translation layer, then I’m sure hunt will be fine with a proper port.

So sometime last year I was at home with my family the day went by with nothing out of the ordinary but when night came things started to get weird. It all started with one of my sisters hearing strange sounds coming from outside (she heard it through her open window) so she recorded it and showed my other sister and later me and my mother.
So understandably we were a little spooked out but then my mom decided to open the back door and call out we’re she and my sisters heard something respond back now i hadn’t heard it so I was a bit skeptical so my mom called again and this time heard it to. Eventually we called the police but they couldn’t find anything but even so this is not something I’ll forget soon.

Description of Original Problem: Half-second interval stuttering started occurring a few weeks ago whenever playing a graphics-intensive game (any FPS, 3D game, etc.) and would occur no matter what settings I configured for (low/med/high/ultra). Recently started noticing this began to persist outside of any game I witnessed it happening in and closed afterwards.

Troubleshooting: I've tried updating drivers (which appears to mitigate the issue until a system restart), I've tried a full reinstall of my drivers with DDU, a full scan/update with Driver Easy, multiple configurations in Adrenalin (toggling different settings mentioned in other threads about this), tried reseating my power cables in the GPU, reseating the GPU itself all to no avail.

I'm really at my wit's end about this and would greatly appreciate any/all assistance to help with this issue.

2023.06.10 23:07 Natchthund The day after Halloween a pumpkin we didn’t buy appeared in our house.

This happened 9 years ago and talking about it today still fills me with fear. My boyfriend and I were renting a property and we were the only people to have a key. We love Halloween and normally buy a pumpkin at least but this year we was both working and didn’t have time for it so we didn’t buy any pumpkins or decorations at all.
The day after Halloween I was getting ready to leave for work and headed down the stairs for the first time, my boyfriend was still in the bedroom when this happened. I got to the top of the stairs and at the bottom of the stairs was a carved pumpkin (with your typical pumpkin smiley face) with a lit candle inside. The worst part is it was positioned so that it was facing the stairs. I screamed and my boyfriend came to see what happened and when he saw it he freaked. We checked all the doors and windows and they were all locked. Nobody else has keys to our house and we didn’t buy any pumpkins. We to this day have no idea how this pumpkin appeared in our house. I recently heard about this glitch in the matrix and I’m starting to think this could have been that.
