2023.04.02 12:00 AutoModerator Daily r/LawnCare No Stupid Questions Thread
Please use this thread to ask any lawn care questions that you may have. There are no stupid questions. This includes weed, fungus, insect, and grass identification. For help on asking a question, please refer to the "How to Get the Most out of Your Post" section at the top of the sidebar.
Check out the sidebar if you're interested in more information on plant hardiness zones, identifying problems, weed control, fertilizer, establishing grass, and organic methods. Also, you may contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for local info.
How to Get the Most out of Your Post: Include a photo of the problem. You can upload to imgur.com for free and it's easy to do. One photo should contain enough information for people to understand the immediate area around the problem (dense shade, extremely sloped, etc.). Other photos should include close-ups of the grass or weed in question: such as this, this, or this. The more photos or context to the situation will help us identify the problem and propose some solutions.

2023.04.02 11:07 RazorStoJ Steel Battalion Online needs your help to crack a rar file password for game preservation!
Hey guys so we have a project currently running and we're looking for experienced tech wizards to help our mission to preserve a debug build of the game our community is based around Steel Battalion Line of Contact for Original Xbox. steelbattaliononline This is the story so far: -What we know about the Debug file/why we want it: The debug version of the game is the oldest known obtainable version of the game (and the oldest known playable version of the game). The absolute oldest known build would be the E3 build, however it is currently doubtful that could ever be obtained nor is it likely that it still exists. The oldest obtained build right now is the Pilot Test, however it is unplayable since it was built to run on the xbox live beta campaign servers. This debug version (October 4, 2003) is almost 2 months older than the Pilot test (November 24th. 2003), making it not only the oldest obtainable version, but also (likely) the oldest playable version of the game, too. The debug version of the game also holds a TON of debug info on how the game works and what the stats are for many things (stats obv not applicable to the release version, but gives us a good idea of how things work). See: https://imgur.com/a/9dJjC. The rar file is 222.1mb in size. From the screenshots the file size is supposed to be 552.61mb, however this is it in its uncompressed state. To compare, compressing the final game (594 MB) gives us a file at a similar size (in my testing I got 222mb using 7z), so it’s highly likely that the file size is correct and that this file is in fact the debug version of the game. What we currently know about the password: The rar would have been encoded in 2015 using winrar. hash of the password is: $RAR3$01d9d55bd0a09db32*d9f904178162b29dd3f1cf66650a3ed3 U/Tenfresh grilled his friend who created the password on his habits and memories; determining that these parameters are more likely (though definitely not guaranteed!): 1st character is likely a capital letter 2nd to 4th are likely lowercase 5+ are likely lower case, number or special. 7-10 characters estimated Unlikely to have another capital in the middle Special characters likely to be at the end Not randomly generated THE STORY SO FAR & FAQ In ~2015, PERSON A saved a dev xbox from capcom offices where he worked. PERSON A asked his friend PERSON B to serve as an intermediary to find a buyer for it on assemblergames (where his username was ‘coolmod’); because PERSON B had a much longer history there and b/c PERSON A was nervous to be associated w/ the item online. PERSON B screwed around with it and recorded this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxYaf2ikJFU PERSON B sold the xbox to PERSON C, and as a courtesy dumped the hard drive for him. PERSON B password protected the .rar for two reasons It’s standard practice and expected among collectors when exchanging prototype software out of concern for the slightly sensitive position of his capcom employee friend. PERSON B relayed the password to PERSON C via a PM on assemblergames. PERSON B threw out the files b/c they were not of interest to him anymore and he considered the matter closed. About a decade passes… PERSON B finds he accidentally kept a copy of the .rar on a backup drive and rethinks its value, but has no records available, nor memory of the password. (see dead “ends” below) In 2023, PERSON B mentions to his friend, u/Tenfresh, that he has a password protected .rar of the LoC beta. WHAT?!?! Dead Ends (AKA what’s already been tried): PERSON B is slightly amazed he still had the .rar file on a hard drive at all. He is moved by how much we care, and has looked high and low and does not have an uncompressed version, nor can he find the password. Assemblergames has since gone defunct so the PM containing the password there is lost. Inquiries have been made to those involved w/ the site and we’ve been told that there is almost no chance that a backup/archive of the site exists. PERSON B reached out to PERSON C a few years ago, but he said he no longer could find the password either, and had since sold the xbox to PERSON D (whose identity is currently unknown [Le Fishy: I’m pretty confident I know who this is, however it’s a hard dead end]). PERSON C’s name and 2015 address are known, and another outreach is in progress; but we’re not giving that info out publicly. The hard drive that the uncompressed file was on when the .rar was created no longer exists; so data recovery is not an option. Rockyou.txt dictionary has been tried. https://discord.com/channels/162274083432693770/1090035161237823488/1090627492970234007 https://pastebin.com/ivYgmXFK ixitomixi Has tried the kanoshi word list https://www.reddit.com/originalxbox/comments/125f1w6/comment/je6z5y9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3 https://github.com/kaonashi-passwords/Kaonashi https://pastebin.com/raw/gDHKFZ4W MagnumKale has tried the darkc0de, 10 million password list top 10000000 and openwall.net wordlists with no hits. As a sanity test, all ?a[1] to ?a?a?a?a[4] using the following command have been tested. hashcat -m 12500 -a 3 -w 3 rar.hash ?a?a?a?a?a --status --status-timer=1 5 char is running now and will be done in a few days https://imgur.com/a/j93fDvu rainbow tables don’t work on rar3 hashes If anyone here is interested in our project please feel free to join our discord server: https://discord.gg/steelbattalion We have a channel set up called #Brainbox and this is where all the people involved are pooling together to help crack the password. I'm currently doing a give away to 1 lucky winner a green button Steel Battalion controller to whoever is the first one to get the password. Thanks for getting this far through and I hope to hear contact from you soon for our mission 🫡 submitted by RazorStoJ to codes [link] [comments]

2023.04.02 08:43 pecan_sandles Christian & Pagan themes from S1 & S2
Sorry if this post is a lil long or reiterating older discussions. I’m new here and I’ve been holding some of these observations from S1 :) Re-watching the first season I noticed A LOT of Christian (specifically Catholic) references, especially in the pilot. When we first meet Shauna, she’s watching Jeopardy while ironing and instantly guesses Milton’s Paradise Lost as one of the answers. This is all about the Garden of Eden and how Satan tricks Adam & Eve into getting expelled. This could be tied to the girls’ situation in the woods and the loss of innocence, but I also thought it was funny Shauna commits adultery w someone named Adam lol. Jumping further in the pilot, Jackie comments on Shauna having gone through a Catholic phase. This moment made me pause because why would Jackie feel so strongly about Shauna trying to get into faith/religion when she’s so proud to be a virgin w a good girl image (queue the lesbian tension theories lol). BUT that’s when I noticed the prayer card Jackie plucks from Shauna’s mirror is the Virgin Mary as Our Lady, Undoer of Knots. People who pray to Mary as the Undoer in knots are usually to mend troubles related to “families, misunderstanding between children and parents, violence, anger, drug addiction, fear, and lack of peace”. All things that plague the present day survivors, especially Shauna. Noticing all these references I started cross referencing other reoccurring themes from S1 with the Bible. With all the wolf imagery,I figured I should look into any possible connections. The most interesting being of Zephaniah 3, where it describes the state of Jerusalem and her Roman leadership at the end of days. Very interesting S2 seems to be delving more into the Roman/Paganism mythology after the strongest Christian of the group has died. submitted by pecan_sandles to Yellowjackets [link] [comments]
2023.04.02 07:11 Electric-Renegade Finance Firms Wary of Being Swept Up in Creeping SEC Dealer Rule
The SEC is quietly expanding its definition of “securities dealers” subject to tighter agency oversight, triggering a pushback from some private funds and investment advisers that are leery of more regulations. The Securities and Exchange Commission is finalizing a rule that, as proposed, would clarify and expand the definition to include some financial firms—such as high-frequency traders—that have traditionally not been considered a dealer. Industry advocates say the agency also is using recent lawsuits against penny-stock flippers to go further than it’s likely to do in its rulemaking—to stake out the position that a “dealer” is any company whose business model is based on buying and selling securities. The agency’s statements in court filings represent a sweeping interpretation of federal securities law, critics say. The expansive definition of “dealer” has the potential to capture numerous businesses, including hedge funds and venture capital funds, that are already subject to regulations, they said. “The type of language that is coming out of the Commission in its briefing in these various cases is so expansive that it would be one of the largest nets one might cast with respect to this industry,” said Marc Indeglia, a partner at Glaser Weil LLP and president of the Small Public Company Coalition. Dealers generally have to register with the SEC and join an organization like Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). They’re subject to various rules, like trading reporting obligations and net capital requirements. Funds facing registration could change their investment strategies to avoid being labeled a dealer, industry reps say. Critics of the SEC’s approach have zeroed in on a case the agency won against a Florida man, Ibrahim Almagarby, and his company, Microcap Equity Group, who are accused of acting as unregistered dealers. The US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit is expected to rule on it this year. The SEC in court filings denies there’s anything radical about its interpretation of “dealer” and said critics are ascribing to the agency a position that it hasn’t taken. The agency declined to comment beyond its filings. “Almagarby engaged in classic dealer activity by acquiring discounted securities from issuers and selling them as quickly as possible,” SEC lawyers said in court filings. Flipping Stocks Almagarby was a 29-year-old student at Palm Beach State College in South Florida when he started MEG out of his home, according to court documents. MEG would buy aged debt from penny stock issuers. After converting the debt into equity for discounted prices, MEG sold the new shares for a profit, the SEC alleged in a 2017 complaint. Almagarby and MEG were alleged to have made over $1.4 million. Finding MEG was a dealer, the district court said the company’s business model was predicated on quickly unloading shares. MEG also had a network of deal finders, including a boiler room of telemarketers who cold called dozens of companies per day, the court said. MEG appealed to the Eleventh Circuit. “He was doing all the things that dealers do,” said Cheryl Nichols, a Howard University law professor and former SEC attorney. But financial trade groups—like the Alternative Investment Management Association and Small Public Company Coalition—have balked at what they argue are sweeping statements from the SEC that suggest a dealer is any business that buys and sells securities for profit. “The approach that they’ve taken here, it encompasses anyone who invests in companies as part of a business, without regard to any other considerations,” Indeglia said. “Our view is that is radically different than what the world thinks it is.” In a brief against Almagarby, the SEC indicated that the fact that his business model was based entirely on buying and selling securities could be “conclusive proof” that MEG is a dealer. That type of statement is a trend in recent cases, industry trade groups say. In a lawsuit against Carebourn Capital, LP, the SEC said the only “definitional requirement is that a dealer engages in the business of buying and selling securities.” In another case, against LG Capital Funding LLC, the SEC emphasized that “LG Capital is a business: it has offices, employees, keeps accounting records, and carries on for profit. And its business model is to buy and sell securities.” That kind of theory could have vast implications for financial markets, AIMA, SPCC, and the National Association of Private Fund Managers said in an amicus brief supporting Almagarby. “If a dealer is any company whose ‘business model’ is based on the ‘purchase and sale of securities,’ the only thing standing between nearly every financial firm and an enforcement action is the ‘benevolence’ of government lawyers,’” the groups said. Daniel Austin, AIMA’s director of US policy and regulation, said the SEC’s interpretation is “simply inconsistent with the statutory text and the general understanding from the commission and market participants for the past almost 90 years.” Rulemaking Impact The Eleventh Circuit is considering Almagarby’s case as the SEC is working to finalize a rule that, as proposed in March 2022, would require more companies to register as dealers. The proposal outlines certain standards that can trigger dealer status. That includes regularly making comparable purchases and sales of the same securities in a day. The standards the SEC outlined ‘build upon and are consistent with past Commission regulations and case law for defining a dealer” under the Exchange Act, the non-profit group Better Markets said in a letter supporting the proposal. But Republican lawmakers and other industry organizations are pushing back. Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.) and Rep. French Hill (R-Ark.), have asked the SEC to justify including private funds in the proposal. Private funds have signaled they’ll change or abandon some investment strategies if forced to register as dealers, they said. The Eleventh Circuit’s decision in Almagarby’s case could impact the rulemaking, lawyers said. “When the court says what the Exchange Act means, and what the word ‘dealer’ means, that could constrain or have an effect on the commission’s authority to interpret that in its rulemaking,” Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP attorney Brian Richman said recently on AIMA’s podcast. The case is SEC v. Almagarby, 11th Cir., No. 21-13755. link to SEC v Almagarby submitted by Electric-Renegade to Superstonk [link] [comments]

2023.04.02 04:06 AtlasGlobe Got Accepted As Transfer For Fall 2023
Hey guys!
This is my first time posting here, but essentially I got accepted as a transfer to the University of Michigan College of Engineering as a Computer Engineering major (might change to Computer Science). I heard applying to the College of Engineering as a transfer is much harder to get into, so I was kind of surprised.
Regardless, I just wanted to speak on a few things in terms of financial aid. Those who transferred or came here as a freshman, how generous are they?
Some Information: I'm coming from out of state. My EFC is 0000000 (basically I get full grant money). I've been in Community College for 3-4 years with 2 associates: Computer Science & General Engineering with a 3.98 GPA in CS and 4.0 in Engineering.
I'm a Jack Kent Cooke Semifinalist, won multiple scholarships and awards like coca cola, have been a president in multiple organizations, College SG, and campus clubs, and have been in leadership positions within Phi Theta Kappa.
I'm currently 21 turning 22, have interned at Nexon KR, SAMSUNG Scholar something (forgot the rest of the name), an online NASA Scholar project, and am currently an intern as an IT and software engineer at a hotel in collaboration with Amazon.
I'm probably missing a few more I don't remember off the top of my head, but that's about it. I'm applying to Columbia as well, but I heard they're notorious for transfer financial aid.
Basically, going back to the title: How generous are they?
Any Merit Aids, or amazing need-based aid? Cause I'm thinking of taking a gap year if I don't win Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship or any aid for that matter. 55k+ tuition is crazy.

AP Capstone Diploma
Extracurriculars:
Student Council President, other former leadership roles. Leading/representing the school. Conducting community outreach and planning events. Started a Public Initiative Committee to address student issues.
Summer Internship with local councilman. Led in-depth statistical analysis of City Budget. Researched city/state law to craft voting policy. Helped communities resolve constituent concerns.
Campaign Intern in close 2022 congressional race - we won! Called thousands of voters to recruit volunteers and get out the vote. Knocked hundreds of doors to campaign, working directly for field organizers.
Pianist/Piano Soloist, played/performed for 11 years. Doing recitals and played for a local restaurant.
Varsity Tennis Captain and Coach of 4-11yos. Runner-up county champs, 2nd-Team All County.

Grouped rest of misc. community service together: Volunteer at local food pantry, National Honor Society, President of SAT Prep Club.
National Chinese Honor Society Secretary. Spread Chinese culture throughout the school, organized events and fundraisers + took notes at meetings.
President of school's Political Action Club.
Essays/LORs/Other:
Personal Statement + Supps: Probably above average? Nothing extremely stellar. Highlighted my motivation to go into politics (the Hong Kong 2019 Protests) and what I've done to reach my goal of going into public service. Discussed my journey getting elected to my city's Board of Education, where I represent ~35,000 students and my plans for the future in this role.
Really tried to craft a narrative here around civic engagement and public service.
Teacher LORs should be 7-9/10. Can't really tell. Got outside recs from my councilman and a mentor that I think really stand out, but I have to be vague about this.
My interviews were above average to excellent. Duke interviewer said I was the best person she interviewed this cycle and would do everything to get me in. Harvard interviewer said I was an excellent choice, etc. etc.
RESULTS:
Accepted - Georgetown, UMich, WashU, NYU, Boston University ($25K Merit Scholarship), GWU ($20K Merit scholarship), Rutgers ($15K Merit scholarship), Alabama (NMF Full Ride Package, most likely attending)
Waitlisted - Harvard, Columbia, Vanderbilt, Northeastern, American (Yield Prot?)
Rejected - Princeton, Yale, Duke, Penn, Cornell, Northwestern
Reflections:
I'm incredibly thankful to have gotten into the schools I've gotten into, but with my income, I won't be getting any aid at the school I really want to go to: Georgetown.
Since the end goal is law school, spending 320K on Undergrad and then 300K on Law School would be too unfair to my parents. I'll probably have to end up going to Bama or Rutgers. Halfheartedly, Roll Tide.
There is a part of me that knows I have great opportunities ahead, but at the same time, Ivy Day was the worst, seeing 4 years of work going down the drain. I'll be trying my best to make it into Harvard & Columbia off their waitlists (PLEASE HARVARD), but Bama might still be the right financial choice.
Currently working on a payment plan with my parents on Georgetown, maybe I can make it work there? We'll see.
C'est la vie...

2023.04.02 00:00 DoNotBanMeEver HELP! How to qualify for Washington residency to avoid OOS Tuition? I was born & raised in Washington.
Background:
I'm currently nineteen years old. I was born and raised in Tacoma, WA. My parents were born & raised in Tacoma, too. For as long as I can remember, I've imagined myself attending the University of Washington. My mom graduated from Tacoma's UW campus herself.
Problem:
My dad still lives in WA, but my mom and I moved to California a few years ago... My mother recently graduated with her PhD in Psychology. Unfortunately, she couldn't get accepted into a graduate program in Washington, so we had to move to California. I've since began my education at a local Community College in California. She is moving back to Washington after I get my Associate's Degree, and I have no family down in California to stay here on my own! I can't afford out-of-state tuition at UW.
Question:
Considering my dad still lives in Washington, coupled alongside the fact I am forced to move back with my mom after earning my Associate's, is there any way I could qualify as a resident of Washington State to avoid OOS tuition?

2023.04.01 20:19 heatherkan 2022 Financial Roundup Post
I'm a biz nerd, so I love doing an end-of-year "financial roundup" post! I've found transparency to be super helpful as we all grow and learn. I'm happy to answer any questions; and always open to suggestions.
If you want to, please feel free to comment with any of your info! (don't fret about being as detailed as this, even just an income/expenses total can be useful- even if you're only at $10 for the whole year or something)
Brief background: I started shooting portraits and weddings in 2005, but didn't have a solid business until 2012. Went full-time in 2015. I'm near Lansing, Michigan, USA, in what I consider to be a rural area, about an hour from larger cities such as Grand Rapids. For context, my personal rent for our apartment is $900. I have no student loans, car loans, CC debt, mortgage, or children. I'm married and I'm the primary breadwinner.
TOTALS:
$115,818.81 - Gross income (not including trades of services)
$13,165 - Trade "income" (services I received in trade)

OTHER INFO:
Biggest purchases: Gif Photobooth, AD1200 light
Weirdest purchases: Horse-head mask (for photobooth), $20 fake wedding rings (for workshop)
Most regretted purchase: Contractor to do FB ads (not a single sale, over $3k spent)
Most surprisingly good purchase: Lemon Tree Editorial copywriting knocked it out of the park and wrote a post that got me subsequent bookings at a favorite venue... whoohoo!
Changes for 2023: - Weddings I'm booking now are averaging $4600k
- Moving to white-glove IPS for portraits and aiming for a $3k average by the end of the year
Biggest lesson learned: ImagenAI editing has changed my LIFE and reduced my editing a TON. Can't wait to use it in 2023 too. 📷
-One more note, huge shoutout to
YNAB for being the accounting/budgeting accountability tool I desperately needed to stop doing the "check the bank account literally in line at the grocery store and pray that there's money in there" song & dance, and actually KEEP more of my money. Game changer.

2023.04.01 20:09 MikeJesus I work in a nursing home. I fear the first Friday of every month.
It caught my eye the moment I got behind the desk. The pamphlet was lightly wedged between a potted plant and a filing cabinet, no doubt having slipped someone’s hand and mind as papers were being shuffled around the nursing home. The pamphlet must’ve been casually dropped recently, yet it looked ancient. Its paper was yellowing and worn and the pages were ever so gently sticking together. Even its font, regal and as far from modern as one might go, seemed to come from a different time.
FLY WITH MORANA AIR TO PLACES YOU HAVE SEEN BUT FORGOTTEN! Most of the adverts that would make their way through the nursing home would have large lettering to complement our clientele’s eyesight. The titles of the Morana Air flier were just as big as any other, yet the actual text of the ad was so miniscule even my healthy eyes couldn’t read it.
FLOAT! — the first page commanded. Beneath the title there was a scrawl of ant-sized literature and beneath the text there was a picture of an old bearded man. He was inside of a dark empty airplane and had a look of utter shock stamped on his face. He was floating.
GO FAR AWAY! — the next page ordered, accompanied with a photograph of a massive black airplane flying over a majestic cover of clouds. The photograph was composed like any other airline advert, but there was something wrong with that plane. Its wings were far too short to accommodate its long, raised hull. The plane didn’t look like it should be capable of flight.
TOUCH LOVED ONES! — the third page read. Beneath the title sat an image I could not decipher. I do not know whether it was a photograph or a drawing or some sort of collage. The image was dark, and within that darkness there were hands and wild faces caught in the midst of some religious rapture.
There were no images on the back of the flier. The space had been completely taken up by Morana Air’s supposed motto:
NEVER WEEP ALONE — FLY MORANA AIR! I was new in the nursing home. It was my first shift without supervision. The flier seemed odd, sure, but there were plenty of other odd things in the Wolf Pines Assisted Living Facility for me to contend with. When I found the flier I simply tucked it away into one of the filing cabinets and pushed its queer offers far from my mind.
The holiday season was busy. Families would come to visit their relatives and the residents themselves would travel out of the facility to celebrate their Christmases. The paperwork associated with the visits, along with the occasional lonely resident who tried sneaking out with the crowds kept me occupied, yet a couple days after the new year I found myself thinking about Morana Air once more.
It was a stormy January night. I had done a couple night shifts before and learned to enjoy the calmness that they provided. By the time I clocked in, visitation hours were long over and no one ever called the nursing home past sundown. I grabbed myself a book and prepared to enjoy an evening of rainy solitude.
It didn’t occur to me for a while, and it certainly didn’t occur to me then, but that night was the first Friday of the month.
A couple minutes before midnight an orderly came in with a resident. Apparently, Mr. so-and-so had a taxi picking him up to take him to the airport. When I asked the resident where he was flying to, he stared back on in silence. When I asked the orderly, he simply shrugged.
No matter how hard I tried, the old man was impenetrable to my attempts at conversation. He would occasionally grunt to show that he had heard my questions, but he wouldn’t return a single word or look me directly in the eye. When I finally gave up and returned to my book, I found myself rereading the same paragraph over and over, unable to concentrate on the text.
That’s when the thought hit me — Morana Air.
I reached into the cabinet and found the flier exactly where I had left it a couple weeks prior. I grabbed it and took it to the resident, close enough that he could read the massive lettering on the front. The moment I showed the old man the flier, his cloudy eyes grew wide with shock. With a quickness I did not think he was capable of; he snatched the flier from my hands and shoved it in his coat.
The old man’s sudden burst of shock produced even more questions from me. Among other things, I wanted to know why he had snatched the flier away from me. With the first barrage of questions the old man still wouldn’t meet my eyes, yet when it became clear I wasn’t going to leave without answers he finally looked up.
“They don’t like it when you ask questions,” he said, in a voice balancing between a whisper and a wheeze. Then, he shifted his eyes to the floor from which they did not rise.
The old man’s words troubled me. After a couple more futile attempts at talking to him, I made my way back to the desk and called to make sure he was, indeed, meant to get on some midnight taxi. The orderly who had brought him picked up the phone and assured me that Mr. so-and-so’s paperwork was all in order and that his caretakers and family had signed off on the trip. If I wanted more information, the orderly said, I should get it out of the old man myself.
The phone call couldn’t have taken more than a minute or two but it was, to put it lightly, frustrating. The orderly had zero interest in the resident’s mental state and wasn’t the least bit concerned with the old man’s strange behavior. Seeing that sort of attitude from someone who is meant to take care of vulnerable people made me angry and through that anger I lost focus. Again, it couldn’t have been more than a minute or two, and I doubt I was distracted enough to not notice the squeaky sliding door open or close — but when the orderly finally hung up on me, I found the old man gone.
The storm outside had picked up to a tropical degree, but in my panic I ran out into the frigid rain. Off by the gates of the nursing home I could see taillights turning off onto the main road.
The man had caught his taxi. His destination was a complete mystery to me and the idea of dropping off a senile man at the airport filled me with disgust, but both his caretakers and his family had signed off on the trip. I tried to content myself with the idea that I was simply doing my job and returned to my book. I tried hard to focus, but I kept reading the same three pages over and over again.
The Wolf Pines Assisted Living Facility had a staff room, but it was sparsely populated. People were always working and, when they had breaks, they would either smoke in front of the gates or, if they had a car, ride back home for lunch. From the few colleagues that I did find a moment to chat with, none were interested in my questions about Morana Air or the strange midnight taxi ride. Apparently, Morana was a charity that offered free senior trips to residents. That’s all my colleagues knew and cared to know.
The food served at the Wolf Pines cafeteria is better suited for the pallet of people half a century older than me, but the tables face a beautiful garden. Whenever I was working day shifts I’d pack a lunch and eat in the cafeteria. My breaks were pretty late, so the tables were mostly empty. Every once in a while though, some of the residents would join me and chat. They were considerably nicer than the employees and I really started to look forward to my lunch breaks.
When I asked the residents about Morana Air, however, they had no answers. A lady of about 90 said that one of her friends went on a Morana Air trip a couple weeks back. When I tried to find out where the trip went or whether her friend had talked about it, her memory was far too faded. She didn’t recall if her friend ever spoke of the trip. She couldn’t recall whether her friend had returned at all.
I had so many questions about Morana Air, yet as the weeks dragged on they lost their urgency. I had worked plenty of night-shifts since that January storm, yet nothing of interest happened. No one entered the building, no one left and the phone only rang once and that was purely because someone misdialed the last digit of a pizza parlor.
It was only three months later, at the start of April that the specter of Morana Air entered my life again. Just at around midnight a familiar orderly entered the lobby. He was accompanying a frail old man with a thinning beard. Rolling next to the resident was an oxygen tank. When I told the orderly that the airport might have an issue with the oxygen tank he simply shrugged.
Mr. so-and-so had a taxi coming for him to take him to the airport. His caretakers and his family had approved of the trip. It wasn’t the orderly’s job, or my job for that matter, to poke around the details.
I tried to talk to the old man but it was of no use. No matter how sweet or curious or direct I was, the man wouldn’t answer my questions or meet my eye. When I had finally given up and sat back down at my desk I could hear the faintest whisper from him.
“They don’t like it when you ask questions,” the old man said, and then took a drag from his oxygen mask.
There wasn’t a thunderstorm outside this time, so, when the taxi arrived; I could see it from my desk. Immediately, I got up and offered to help the resident to the car, but the old man shooed me off and then said something about “Them not liking it when anyone helps.”
The man shambled his way to the taxi, pulled his oxygen tank in and then the car drove off into the darkness. The return of the strange airport fare was a reminder of the Morana Air mystery, but it made me no wiser on the subject. I sat behind that desk all night long trying to make sense of what I had seen. By the time the sun rose I was no wiser on where Morana Air was taking the residents of Wolf Pines, but I had noticed a pattern.
Twice, they had come on the first Friday of the month.
I wasn’t scheduled for the May 5th night shift, but I made some uneven trades with the smokers outside the gates. When the first Friday of the month came again I was back behind that desk. My book stayed shut the whole night.
The orderly wasn’t of much help, but I didn’t expect him to be. The woman, likewise, wasn’t helpful in illuminating the mystery of Morana Air. When I started asking questions about where the taxi was going she averted her eyes and focused on fidgeting with her ring. I had some hope for getting information out of the traveling resident, but that was not the crux of my plan.
I was going to talk to the taxi driver. I was going to find out what happened with our residents when they reached the airport.
Outside, the night was calm and still. As if the driver knew I was waiting, the taxi didn’t come for a long time. When I registered the faintest bit of light in the driveway, however, I was on my feet and ready to ask questions.
When I approached the door the old lady blocked my path. She, much like the other midnight-riders, said that
they did not like folks asking questions or going with company. When I demanded the old lady explain who
they were she did not provide any answers. Instead, she slipped off her ring and offered it to me as payment.
I wasn’t someone to be bribed. I was looking out for her. All I wanted to do was talk to the taxi driver to make sure the old woman would be safe.
She offered the ring to me in scared whispers, yet when I declined her bribe the old woman’s demeanor completely changed. She turned aggressive. With shouts and swipes of her nails she demanded I let her through the front door to her taxi. The woman was frail and she posed no danger to me, yet her shouts had alerted a trio of orderlies who entered the lobby to investigate.
Her family and caretakers had signed off on the trip, they said. I was in no position to stop her or interview the taxi driver, they said.
By the time I got home I received a mass e-mail from Wolf Pines management. The e-mail did not name me directly, but it concerned the practice of exchanging shifts without notifying management. Exchanging shifts, according to the e-mail, was strictly forbidden and bordered on fraud. Anyone found partaking in this swindling of the company would be punished.
By the time I woke up I had a second e-mail waiting for me in my inbox. The e-mail, once again, came from Wolf Pines management but this time I was its only recipient. I was not just chastised for ‘manipulating one of my coworkers into exchanging shifts’ but also for ‘getting into a yelling match with one of the residents’ and ‘disparaging a charity that worked with the nursing home.’
Apparently, Morana Air graciously offered residents of Wolf Pines free trips to exotic destinations. That was all I needed to know. Any further questions weren’t welcome.
When I made my way to the afternoon shift my spirits were low. Getting chewed out in the two e-mails didn’t feel good, but more importantly I didn’t manage to confront the taxi driver and my chances at being able to do so again seemed nil.
Not long after I settled at my desk though, a familiar cab pulled into the driveway.
The taxi driver was a big burly guy but he spoke in a near whisper. Nervously, he asked me if I knew anything about the residents that leave the nursing home every first Friday of the month. I was beyond relieved to be talking to the man, but my response seemed to have scared him. When I asked where the customers went and whether they spoke about their journey in the car, he simply shook his head.
He said he just dropped them off at the airport, as he was instructed to do by dispatch. That was all he knew. Nothing weird happened on the rides.
I tried asking more questions, but the driver had suddenly become uninterested in talking to me. By the time I even said the words Morana Air he was already out the door.
For a brief moment I thought I could find answers, but then I was plunged back into darkness. The taxi driver’s reaction made me certain that there was something off about the midnight trips. The moment he saw that I also had questions about all the strange airport rides, he backed out. He had questions too, but he knew a lot more than he was letting on.
Halfway through my shift I got another visit. My boss dropped by my desk to repeat the fine points of the two e-mails I had received from management. Her tone was a lot nicer than the text, but within her friendly attitude and empathetic voice there was a clear message:
I wasn’t meant to ask more questions about Morana Air. They were a trusted partner of Wolf Pines and implying that their trips were somehow unsafe was not appropriate under any circumstances. If I was to keep my job, I was to stop asking questions.
Without much of a choice, I told my boss that my curiosity about Morana Air had been satisfied. I knew that I could no longer ask any of my coworkers, but for a couple of days I kept some hope alive for the taxi driver coming back. From the look on his face, I could tell that he knew that something was wrong with the midnight trips.
From the look on his face, I could tell that he felt guilty.
Yet the taxi driver never came back. As the weeks went on Morana Air went from being a mystery that consumed every waking moment of my internal monologue to an eerie curiosity that I would occasionally think about shortly before I fell asleep. I still didn’t know where the elderly residents of Wolf Pines were taken every first Friday of the month, but what I did know was that I couldn’t lose my job.
After the initial mystery of the midnight trips, my life in Wolf Pines attained a calming regularity. There was the occasional escape attempt for me to calmly prevent and every other week I’d get at least one mind-boggling phone call from an overbearing relative, but aside from that work was just as tranquil as it could be. I managed to make a big dent in my reading list with the night shifts and, on the busier day shifts, I always had my lunch breaks to look forward to.
Many of the friendships I had made in the cafeteria were tragically short, but such is the nature of friendships in nursing homes. Throughout the months I said goodbye to a lot of the old folks who would sit with me during lunch, but one stayed a constant — Gabriella.
Gabriella was a stout woman in her early 90s. Aside from the wrinkles on her face and the difficulty she had sitting down or getting up from her chair, you couldn’t tell though. Gabriella’s mind was sharper than most healthy adults I know and her sense of humor had the cut of a professional. She had spent most of her life teaching and had an endless supply of stories from all the corners of the country where she had taught. Whenever I went for lunch she’d be sitting by my usual spot, waiting for me. My chats with Gabriella quickly became the highlight of my work day.
I had mentioned Morana Air to her, once. The cafeteria workers seemed completely uninterested in anything past the lunch queue and there were no other members of staff in the room, yet I still found myself speaking about Morana in a whisper.
I was actually relieved when Gabriella said she had never heard of them. By then, the questions of the midnight rides were starting to slip from my mind. Gabriella not being familiar with Morana Air calmed me. I presumed there still was a taxi arriving at Wolf Pines every first Friday of the month to pick up our residents, yet without being involved myself the concept was abstract enough to forget about.
I had accepted that some mysteries were better left unexplored. I almost forgot about Morana Air all together, but last week I was given a horrid reminder.
It was a day like any other. I got off for my lunch break around three and Gabriella was already sitting at our usual table waiting for me with her tray of easily chewable food. Something about her was different though. That usual sharpness of mind that reflected in her eyes had dulled, or, more accurately, was flickering away. When I sat down she spoke no differently than she usually did, but every couple of sentences her eyes would glaze over and her articulation descended into the realm of a child.
At first, I simply thought that something was wrong with her in a medical sense. It was tragic, yes, but the woman was not too far from being a century old. I thought I was simply watching someone’s years catch up with them, but then, about halfway through my sandwich, Gabriella took out a familiar piece of paper.
FLY WITH MORANA AIR TO PLACES YOU HAVE SEEN BUT FORGOTTEN! She said a handsome young man in a suit had come to her room last night and told her all about Morana Air. She would go on a trip far, far away and meet everyone she had missed for so long. She would fly high up in the sky and float and laugh and feel young once more. She would fly with Morana Air and, best of all, the trip was completely free.
When she spoke about the trip her voice lost all trace of the Gabriela I knew. Even though she was 90, when Gabriela spoke about Morana Air she took on the voice and look of a barely cognizant child.
I tried asking questions. I tried asking about who the handsome young man was or where she was flying to or why she would trust a mysterious travel company that she had never heard about before. To my questions, Gabriella simply shook her head:
“They don’t like it when you ask questions,” she said.
I had heard those words enough to not have any faith in getting past them. Instead of asking more questions, I asked Gabriella if I could borrow the pamphlet and give it back to her the following day. For a moment her eyes attained that same sharpness I was accustomed to. She gave me the pamphlet and then, with complete lucidity, asked me how my day was going.
I told her I had a meeting with the boss coming up and had to cut our lunch short.
Gabriella said she was looking forward to seeing me the next day.
I never saw her again.
I didn’t lie about the meeting. My boss wasn’t expecting me, but I did meet her. Pamphlet in hand and with fifteen minutes left on my lunch break, I went to her office and repeated my qualms about Morana Air. She was surprised to see me unearth the forbidden topic months after I was told to drop it, but when I showed her the pamphlet, when I told her about the “
handsome young man” that came into the rooms of one of the residents last night — my superior’s demeanor changed. Holding the pamphlet by the tips of her fingers as if it was covered with filth, she started to ask questions.
For the first time since I started working at Wolf Pines, I saw my boss become visibly concerned. She spoke slowly, calculating each word. She wanted me to tell her, in detail, about all of the midnight shifts I had worked where residents left for Morana Air flights. She asked about the taxi driver and the woman who tried to give me the ring and then, when I had answered all of her questions and posed some of my own — she fired me.
My termination had nothing to do with Morana Air. I had left the reception desk unattended for over ten minutes. That was unacceptable. When I tried to argue the decision she summoned a familiar orderly that showed me the door.
I’ve checked before — I’ve checked many, many times before — but there’s still no trace of Morana Air online. They have no website, they have no way to book flights and there isn’t a trace of evidence of them ever having any charity programs for senior citizens.
I’ve been warned that if I tried to go to Wolf Pines Assisted Living Facility under any circumstances, the authorities would be contacted and charges would be pressed. The last thing I want to do is end up in cuffs, but as I watch the days count down to the start of the month I can’t help but to wonder what will happen to Gabriella.
I can’t help but wonder where the midnight taxi will take
her.

2023.04.01 19:22 rokarmedforces "What does a 10 tons weight difference mean in a tank?" An article from Norwegian scientific journal that compares K2 Black Panther and Leopard 2's design philosophies
Source Article A Norwegian scientific journal that's been closely covering the latest Norwegian tank acquisition (54x Leopard 2A7 to be acquired) published an article recently. A former Norwegian Army Chief closely mirrors
my previous post that sheds light into K2's design philosophy.
TLDR: lighter weight =/= less armor
I thought the timing was perfect as this article was published just few days after that post. This article further supports the evaluation by the Norwegian army that K2 Black Panther and Leopard 2A7 are basically equal to one another in performance, and why it twice recommended the K2. But from the strategic perspective of the Norwegian government, it also makes sense to acquire the Leopard 2A7 for logistics & allied interoperability reasons.
Google Translation: What does ten tons on a tank mean? It depends on which general you ask.
On Friday 3 February, the government announced that it is acquiring 54 new Leopard 2A7 tanks from Krauss-Maffei Wegmann.
This happened after a competition with two invited participants in which the German supplier was preferred over Korean Hyundai Rotem and their K2 Black Panther tank.
As Teknisk Ukeblad has mentioned , the decision was taken despite the fact that Defense Materials recommended the Korean candidate, which, among other things, should have been considerably less expensive.
Teknisk Ukeblad has only been given access to redacted copies of Defense Material's recommendations to the Defense Staff. It is still possible to reason that, in addition to price, the question of weight is something that is weighted relatively heavily. The passage on this topic forms a significant part of the graded discussions.
Both tanks have diesel engines producing 1,500 horsepower, while the weight difference is around ten tonnes. Then the question is what the difference in the weight/power ratio has to say practically and operationally.
Teknisk Ukeblad has spoken to former defense chief Harald Sunde, who believes this has marginal significance, while former army chief Lars J. Sølvberg, on the other hand, believes it has obvious consequences.
Equaly good
First, it must be emphasized that Forsvarsmaterel's review concluded that both tanks met the requirements and that the overall assessment of performance indicates that they are roughly equally good.
In the FMA documents, it appears that the Leopard 2A7 weighs just under 70 tonnes, while the K2 Black Panther weighs just under 60 tonnes.
"I think the weight issue is interesting, as I understood that it was a requirement from Defense Material to stay below 60 tonnes and I know that Hyundai Rotem made many moves to succeed in this, despite the fact that they switched on APS (active protection) . From experience, this weight difference will have major consequences for both logistics and mobility," says Sølvberg.
He is a retired major general and former commander of the Army and has been associated with the Korean campaign based on what he says is a genuine interest in the Armed Forces getting a good solution to something that has been hanging in the air for many years. In other words, modern tanks to replace the around 40-year-old Leopard 2A4s that were bought used over 20 years ago.
When it comes to the logistics part, he says that the Norwegian Armed Forces are already in borderland on a number of roads and bridges when the Leo 2A4 is transported around, and that the problem could become greater with new tanks in combination with new cargo vehicles from RMMV, which increase the total weight .
It is also a strategic point. He believes it is important not to put the Army in an unfavorable position where they are only referred to isolated training fields. Being able to practice throughout the country and be visible in your training maneuvers also has a deterrent effect.

Less need for steel
Sølvberg further points out that weight is a very important component in the mobility dimension.
"This was also a theme in the days of the Leopard 1. I remember the Americans visiting Norway with considerably heavier M60 tanks, and there was a dramatic difference in the ability to navigate the terrain. There is a lot of bog in Norway. And anyone who has been stuck there with a tank knows that then it is quickly done to stay put for good," says Sølvberg.
Sølvberg rejects that lower weight means less protection and refers to information TU has also received from Hyundai Rotem:
They say that the main reason why K2 weighs less is less need for steel. Many tons are saved in a tower that is smaller because the charger is replaced by an auto charger and the crew consists of three instead of four. The modern "power pack" (engine and transmission) is more compact and lighter, while the wheel suspension also saves weight.
"The height profile, being able to lower down and reduce one's own silhouette, can also be of great importance for survivability," points out Sølvberg.
The K2 is equipped with a hydropneumatic suspension solution that can be somewhat reminiscent of what you find on passenger cars from Citroën. This means that the ground clearance can be regulated from 0.55 to 0.15 meters (0.45 is standard).
Raising the front slightly in relation to the rear helps to increase passability on snow. The adaptive chassis also makes it possible to raise the cannon from minus 10 to plus 24 degrees by kneeling or sitting on the hind legs.
Sølvberg compares the tanks as a 2000s digital construction, in contrast to analogue steel from the 1970s.
"It's future versus past, a Hyundai Ioniq versus an Opel Rekord. The development potential is vastly greater for K2 than Leo, as well as the fact that K2, for example, has a built-in simulator and digital maintenance management for better and cheaper support services. But by all means, I have a lot of good things to say about Leo. After many years of service with two generations of Leopard, I know that they were excellent systems - for their time. But I had hoped that the Army would now take a solid place going forward," says the former army commander.
Somewhat exaggerated
Someone who also has a lot of good things to say about Leo, both its past and future, is retired general Harald Sunde. Just a few weeks after Russia invaded Ukraine, the former defense chief told Teknisk Ukeblad that he considered it a matter of course that Norway acquired new tanks from Germany .
He primarily argued the importance of continuing to use the same material as our close allies and ensuring that we can also fight together in one group in the future and have systems with interoperability.
He does the same today, and emphasizes that the advantages of large households must be exploited to the utmost and that shared logistics solutions must be further developed.
Leopard 2 is used today in various versions by all the Nordic countries, as well as Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Canada - as well as Ukraine.
"I think a good choice has been made here, albeit in overtime. The Norwegian army, like other NATO countries, has chosen the maneuver concept as a form of combat, and it requires storm armored vehicles and tanks that fight as one unit. We have modern armored personnel carriers in upgraded CV90s, but we have lacked modern tanks," says Sunde.
"I think that the weight issue is somewhat exaggerated. We have a lot of hills, mountains and solid ground, so that the carrying capacity of heavy vehicles in this country is not an obstacle. Restrictions on roads and such, I would call a peace problem. We have a lot of hilly terrain, but in return it gives large fields of fire and the opportunity to utilize the tanks' great strength - flat-track fire at 3-4,000 metres," says Sunde.
Not eitheor
54 Leopard 2A7s are to be acquired from KMW. This means that the Army is continuing a 53-year-long tradition in which they have used the Leopard 1A5 and now, most recently, the Leopard 2A4.
The main delivery from the Munich-based company is scheduled to take place in the period 2026–2028. The contract includes an option for a further 18 tanks.
Sunde has no doubt that this option should be used and says he is looking forward to the Chief of Defense's new professional military council. As is known, the acquisition of tanks on the eve of the process was surprisingly postponed when it became known that the chief of defense recommended dropping tank purchases.
"I want to defend Kristoffersen a little, because I know what it's like to be underfunded. Then such powerful remarks are needed. But I would say that the discussion about maneuverability and long-range fire cannot be eitheor. Long-range fire is a casualty, and it is the effect that matters most, not whether it is delivered by rockets, artillery shells or air-to-ground operations. But to conquer and hold ground, maneuver is needed," says Sunde, who was chief of defense in the period 2009–2013.
German configuration
Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) informed Teknisk Ukeblad at the end of January last year, when the winter tests at Rena were about to start, that their Leopard 2A7 weighed 64 tons.
In Forsvarsmateriel's mapping, it appears that the tank weighs close to 70 tonnes.
Teknisk Ukeblad has asked KMW what is the reason for this difference, and has received the answer that it was the Leopard 2A7 in German configuration that was used in the winter tests, and that information about the current Norwegian configuration belongs to FMA.
Among the things that increase the emphasis is active protection (APS), something that, by the way, both candidates offered.
Hyundai Rotem still does not want to comment on the Norwegian tank competition. Their representative Mogens Rasmus Mogensen in Military Equipment Denmark (MED) has stated to TU that they were very satisfied with the way FMA conducted the competition and with the whole process, until the matter ended up at a political level and someone high up in the system thought it was most important that Norway buys material from Germany.
As for the difference in weight between Leo 2A7 and K2, Sunde says that this is of marginal importance, especially now that we are talking about the defense of Norway and the soil we have here.

2023.04.01 18:04 mikeramp72 Endgame #21
21st: Courtney Marit (Panama - 6th)
this was funny lol rovivus:
As evidenced by my cut of her just inside the Top 100, I don’t think Courtney is anywhere near an endgame character. The show is always laughing at Courtney rather than with her, which is why I don’t buy her as a comedic character, and she comes across as way too insufferable for me to see her as a tragic character. The fact that she’s the victim of Cirie’s 3-2-1 boot is delicious, but that vote is much more about Cirie’s growth arc than Courtney’s downfall. Just a meh character for me, with some memorable moments.
DramaticGasp:
Courtney is a very fun character! She contributes greatly to the chaos and entertainment that is Casaya. Every moment she's on the screen is a great moment. Only problem is, the show doesn't give her enough screentime. Had she gotten more of a focus I think she'd be more of a lock for endgame overall.
Schroeswald:
If my lowest character in endgame is Courtney Marit I did a really good job of this. She’s hilarious and has some solid relationships and her boot is one of the greatest in post Palau survivor. It’s fun that she got here and there are certainly worse people who y’all have top 21.
supercubbiefan:
The main source of conflict on the glorious trainwreck Casaya tribe, which is in my top three for best tribe of all time. Every argument with her tribemates, from taking offense at Bobby’s selfish drinking of the wine to defending her shitty apartment, is pure gold. Oh, and Courtney being picked as the correct answers in the Touchy Subject challenge for “Who never shuts up”, “Who is the most annoying person out here” and “Who is the biggest poser” is a perfect way to describe her incredibly chaotic energy that was perfect for Casaya.
TinkerKnightForSmash:
Pretty funny, but, even coming from the world's biggest Keith fan, I don't think that's enough to elevate her this high, as she's not really the most memorable member of the Casaya trainwreck; she's no Shane, Cirie or Aras.
Theseanyg22:
I’m loving the Exile Island representation in this endgame. I’m so glad Courtney and Shane were able to make it together. Courtney is one of the best if not the best of her archetype
~
Franky494:
Courtney Marit (6th Place, Panama) *”Forgot my guns. They’ve been dropped in a sea of forgiveness.”*
Similarly to Courtney, I will begin this writeup with forgiveness - because I will forgive my fellow rankers for (I’m assuming) placing Courtney far too low. I could stay mad - but chips on your shoulder of regret and anger weigh you down…and I’m a bird, so I gotta fly.
Really though - I think an excellent introduction to a Courtney writeup is her jury speech. It introduces everything about her and perfectly explains the type of person and player that Courtney is. Her quirks and her oddities and her eccentricities are all on full display, and she makes no attempt to hide them.
Is she the most complex character on Earth? Nah. I don’t think her arc is some masterclass in storytelling, or she’s the secret main character of Panama. That isn’t why I got her to endgame. I got her to endgame because she’s fucking hilarious, and I don’t think enough people acknowledge that to the level that she deserves. She isn’t some exaggerated personality or some OTT comedic legend - and yet she manages to quite handily be my favourite character in terms of the enjoyment I get.
Maybe that’s going to be a weak argument and leave people dissatisfied with her endgame placement - but hopefully I can provide enough examples of the insane comedic relief that Courtney brings to the season and just how her mere presence improves everything around her. Even her first confessional is jokingly remarking about how the younger women were unable to choose a spot for a shelter - with the stereotype of women being indecisive.
But her true premiere shining moment is also something that’s just…really Courtney. Courtney is a uniquely spiritual person. As her tribe stumbles across an unfortunately deceased turtle and looks confused, Courtney wants to honour the turtle as in some cultures it represents the idea of mother and goddess - and so decides to draw a heart and make a rock pattern around it, feeling like the turtle was significant. Even this initial introduction to her quirks causes some disdain from her tribemates as it was fairly over dramatic compared to the priorities that they should hold when in the game.
I think introductions are some of the most important aspects of a character. While people rarely have golden premieres - they can set up everything and when done successfully, should introduce us to the players and the type of people they are. This is especially important for a comedy character because it can easily determine whether or not they’re a facade or if they’re just an entertaining person. And Courtney never has a wavering moment after this. I never get the idea that she’s playing a character, she’s simply just a unique personality. She’s not the most likeable, and I understand that criticism, but I’ll be damned if someone tries to argue that she isn’t herself for better or for worse.
Now I don’t want to simply go episode-by-episode for this cut - however I’d be remiss to not mention Episode 2; and the irony of how Casaya forms. It’s not a random draw like most tribe swaps - but instead, we have a schoolyard pick. Casaya’s chaotic nature was formed by their own destiny’s being bonded together. In fact, Shane himself chooses Courtney which always makes me laugh. Of course he had no way to know what he was strapping himself in for - but Shane being the one to put him and Courtney together is golden. And we end up with a tribe of Aras, Bobby, Cirie, Courtneyand Shane - and later, Bruce. And also Melinda and Danielle but honestly they’re not really relevant to Courtney. Danielle didn’t really get to drag Courtney in the same way as everyone else because they were friends of sorts, while Melinda is just not that relevant. Hope she’s thriving though!
I suppose now is an appropriate time to talk about her relationships, as they’re truly what makes Courtney what she is. The reason why all these relationships become so important is because Courtney is just a miraculous person. She’s able to inspire such a level of controversy just by her existence - even in the most calm, cool and collected individuals. On Casaya, only one person probably meets this description, and while she’s not as involved in the shitting on Courtney, she’s able to get a few digs in; mainly through her reactions to how Courtney just exists in the world. And with a Cirie mention, I’d also be a fool to avoid the elephant in the room, the 3-2-1 vote. While it’s far more fitting for a Cirie writeup, I think it’s poetic that Courtney became so annoying that Cirie became the only person to take her down and prevent her seemingly inevitable FTC performance. It’s such a simple but effective story for how Courtney leaves the game that I can’t help but enjoy it.
From the goddess of Survivor to the Cod of Panama - let’s next go over Bobby, who’s shining episode is For Cod’s Sake as a whole. Easily one of the most entertaining compilations of a boot episode ever, BobDawg (and Bruce) decide that after their tribe floods and they thought they had no room in the shelter, they should drink the wine that was won on a reward. Our heroine, Courtney, confronts him about it because naturally people aren’t going to be happy, just for Bobby to state he has no bad feelings about taking Courtney’s wine, just that he took everyone else’s, which for one of the few times in the game, leaves Courtney speechless. It’s such a fun episodic rivalry that comes out of the blue and really sells the chaos of Casaya. From wild actions to petty confrontations, what other way is there to define it.
With a smaller rivalry - Aras also shines a lot.in his scenes with Courtney, as it feels like for a lot of the season, Courtney is the only person who Aras is allowed to be negative about (until his eventual Terry dislike). From Aras complaining about laziness overlayed with a confessional of Courtney doing yoga, to Courtney’s dislike of how Aras approaches vote outs - such as him telling Cirie & Melinda that they were leaving, or his attempt to get out Sally in favour of a “boys club” - it’s a surprisingly consistent part of the Panama story.
You may notice two of these people have been left out. That is because we are now approaching the final two episodes of Miss Marit’s stay in Panama, where I think going through one of the episodes makes sense for the climax of both of her favourite relationships. I’ll start with what may end up being the unintentional funniest episode in all of Survivor - Medical Emergency. Now this may be a touchy subject for some, but the best part of Courtney’s stay for me is easily that entire episode. She’s a goldmine of entertainment the entire time, and where else to begin but Touchy Subjects.
I can’t quite explain what makes it work for me - it’s definitely not *fun* to see Courtney get raked over the coals by being the answer to virtually everything negative, but I feel like it’s also not as serious as some people make it out to be. She might be hurt, but she’s laughing along and I actually think Panama’s entire challenge is fairly negative, so someone had to get it. And while Courtney might not mean harm, I definitely see why people would find her annoying to be around. I also get why someone might not enjoy watching it, but I personally found it funny to watch the trainwreck of that challenge - from Shane’s emotional reactions to others, to Aras trying to play the peacemaker.
And to make it better, Courtney shows exactly why she got those answers. As Bruce is crouched over in pain, he declines Courtney’s offer to sing a song for him. Courtney makes the charitable decision to sing regardless through his suffering as a form of comfort. This entire scene is genuinely scene, as the seriousness of Bruce’s medevac is countered by Courtney’s singing and Shane carrying the stretcher naked. Not to mention how Bruce being medevaced left Courtney & Shane together at camp, with no one else.
With Bruce’s departure, let’s talk about Courtney & Bruce, as their one-sided dislike is probably where Courtney’s lack of self awareness is most prevalent. From Courtney disagreeing with Bruce’s water filtering system immediately, to Bruce claiming that exile is better than spending time with Courtney, to everything about the rock garden, their entire relationship is so special. One of the best recurring moments is how no matter what, Courtney just can’t stay away from Bruce’s rock garden. Early on, she does yoga there even as Bruce gets openly annoyed - and to honour Bruce, the infamous “LUV” gets written in the rocks. It’s such a sweet, sentimental way to memorialise his legacy, and nothing could be more Courtney than that.
The next time we see Gitanos pot-medevac though, we see the infamous “shitty little apartment” fight. I don’t care what anyone says - this fight is GOLD. Even if you disagree with Shane and find it uncomfortable (which is very valid, just to clarify) I still think Courtney was a gem in this, as she instigates it as she laughs at Shane’s reactions when she denies her apartment's shittiness. For as little self awareness as people find Courtney to have, she’s a great instigator when she wants to be and I think she brings such a relaxed level of craziness.
And thus, that brings us to Shane. Shane and Courtney have a genuinely insane combination of relationships. From start to finish, they are on a rocky rollercoaster of a friendship. From their immediate alliance and Courtney being a big factor in trying to convince Shane to stay - to the very next episode where Shane fights Courtney and Danielle about wanting to be released from the promise of his son’s name. From initiating fights as Courtney laughs about the thinking seat, to unintentional fights about how Shane is condescending, there is always something with these two and it’s what makes Panama such a fun season.
My personal favourite scene of the dynamic duo though is a throwaway one that’s very easily missed - where Courtney and Shane are in the shelter at night, and fighting as they’re meant to be cuddling at night for warmth. It’s such a funny contrast that shows the survival element of the show, and it comes out of nowhere and that’s part of the value of it.
For a few miscellaneous moments that didn’t really fit inside the writeup, a lot of them concern her spirituality. For the firecracker of a tribe to be a spiritual person, it comes as a shock, but it provides Courtney with a lot of unique commentary. The aforementioned turtle scene is a great introduction to this, but even her general demeanor and way of talking feels quite spiritual - such as how she attempts to talk Shane out of quitting in Episode 2. Another fun moment for me is when she calls the other tribe pure evil after they exiled Bruce a second time. And the FIRE DANCING is absolutely incredible. One of the best luxury items ever, for sure. It was such a unique talent and honestly I could watch the scene of her using the fire sticks for hours. Maybe it’s a small part of Courtney in the big picture, but it’s always been a really memorable item for me. It links to her spirituality as she talks about how blessed she is with “our” fire and “our” journey together, and it just shows that Courtney really is exactly the person we saw on our TVs.
To finish this off though, let’s go back to where I began this writeup, and re-introduce her FTC, because I really think that speech is a top tier one of all time. Of course, the dropping her guns quote is legendary - but even the answers are amazing. I adore how Courtney just goads Aras and Danielle into telling her what she wants to hear, and while it might not be as iconic or groundbreaking as a speech like Snakes & Rats - I think it’s an amazing one nonetheless.
I’d also just like to quickly address the criticism that we laugh *at* Courtney, and never *with* her - and I do think that’s fair, but while Courtney wasn’t the best socially, I don’t think her edit was necessarily malicious. I think it’s easy to brush off the insight we get into who she is because she’s such a quirky personality, but we really get to know a lot about her. Of course, the comfort levels are entirely personal, but the fact that we don’t *just* get told Courtney is a joke (even if a lot of her content isn’t really told to us in a matter-of-fact way) makes me be able to view her as an entertaining character rather than one that causes discomfort.
So…yeah. That’s a wrap on my thoughts about Courtney. Maybe endgame is generous in the eyes of some people, and I fully respect that take. However, I absolutely find her to be a great TV character and pound-for-pound, I would wager money that Courtney brings the most pure entertainment. Sure, she’d probably be a nightmare to live with, but as a TV character, she was gold. She was authentic and we got to know her personality, and we got shown this through how she interacts with other people and the world around her. We don’t get *told* that Courtney is a bit obnoxious and a bit unaware of how she comes off - because the show makes it clear that’s her personality in how she interacts with people.
