2023.06.08 18:14 sidianmsjones I'm sickened and disappointed in r/Portland's take on the homeless. I don't care how unpopular my opinion is.

These measures keep coming up for taking action against the homeless and unanimously this sub is cheering, talking about how it's about time, and "but will they really enforce it?", and just generally not giving a shit what happens to homeless people.
Yes, I understand they are drug addicts, mentally screwed up, and sometimes straight up dangerous. Yes I understand they hurt business, aesthetics, and even other people. But do you think for a second they didn't want a better life for themselves? That when they were younger they didn't have a better idea of what their future would hold? They don't want to be there either and it is our civilization that has failed to care for them.
Yet here are three hundred thousand of you cheering for the removal. I ask you where the fuck are they supposed to go? And you answer
The prison industrial complex would be a decent start
Back to the cities they came from
They could pick up their tent and garbage, try going to a shelter, stop doing drugs, and get a job. Literally near record low unemployment and open jobs
Without so much as a shred of understanding the situation. Pick up their tent? You mean the only home they have? Even the garbage is understandable considering the situation. Also just stop doing drugs; you know the substance that your body craves so badly you feel like you are dying without it, or might actually die without it? Just get a job despite looking and smelling like shit, being an addict, having mental health issues, no address or bank account...why do I even have to list these things for you to stop and think for a moment?
Here's the bottom line I'm getting at - the homeless didn't grow up thinking and wanting to be where they are right now. Bad choices, life circumstance, and a sick money addicted society did that. But instead of turning your ire toward the system and your empathy toward our collective failure as a people, you turn it to the people who have less than nothing.
The next time some measure comes up regarding how to fuck over the least loved and least fortunate people in the entire city, why don't you stop for a moment and ask yourself why we ever allowed such a tragedy to persist in the first place. It could be YOU or someone YOU know and love who ends up on the street next. All it could take is smoking a laced joint or taking a pill someone told you was something else. Or just coming down with a mental illness. Or becoming financially broke.
I don't care if this is seen as some eye-rolling moral soapbox. What we are philosophically supporting as a people is wrong. Fix it.

Hello! I am one of those “one trick ponies” except I have slightly more variety and it’s not as bad but still bad idk how to explain it.
I’d like some recommendations on who to play besides Chang’e, Nana, Angela and recently Harith! (I’d add Ruby, Lolita and Joy to the list but while I play them I kind of suck at playing them. I’m only in Epic and my user is VelvetThePoptartFox (really old acc but I didn’t play a lot until recently, and any tips on improving my gameplay are appreciated
I feel like I’m the problem in some ranked matches and I don’t wanna be the problem so yeah...
I’ll take any critiques

2023.06.08 18:13 Kartoonpanda Help with video stuttering (possible bottleneck?)

I've been having some issues with stuttering on my computer and I was looking for help. It stutters every ~10 seconds when playing a game, but pretty much anything that uses video (like YouTube) has the stuttering too.
Specs:
What I've tried:
My best guess would be that I have a GPU bottleneck, because when I had my 1050 TI in my old PC (that had an intel i5 3330) there was no stuttering. I also thought it could be my power supply, since it's a very old one? I'd really like to fix this without having to buy a new graphics card, because I don't play that intense of games. I don't really mind making my GPU perform at a lower level to fix this.

2023.06.08 18:13 Tough-Result6269 (GA) Bar Exam Advice on Passing While Staying Sane Part Three: How to Use Adaptibar Lectures Effectively for the MBE

Please note the disclaimer on Part One: (GA) Bar Exam Advice on Passing While Staying Sane Part One : barexam (reddit.com)
And here’s Part Two: (GA) Bar Exam Advice on Passing While Staying Sane Part Two MBE BAR PREP MATERIALS : barexam (reddit.com)
Apologies for the delay in Part Three as I went on vacation to celebrate NOT HAVING TO STUDY FOR THE BAR EXAM AGAIN THIS SUMMER. Whew. It feels soooo good and I wish that feeling for anyone out there getting ready for the J23 exam, and I hope my book-length posts can help spare even just one person from ever retaking it.
I’ve seen many questions regarding on to effectively use AdaptibaJonathan Grossman lectures. This is what *I* did. Of course, you do you and whatever feels comfortable. The biggest part of this is that you *need* to not just listen to Grossman lectures but learn/memorize the concepts he is mentioning because they are the most frequently tested ones. Does he cover everything? No. But if you can master this, you probably have roughly 70% of what will most likely be tested on the MBE and that is good enough to pass. Supplement it with other short outlines/cheat sheets and you will be plenty ready.

  1. TAKE NOTES AND CREATE AN OUTLINE FROM THE LECTURES
While I listened to Jonathan Grossman lectures, I took notes and created an outline of everything he said. There is a transcript available, but taking notes was part of the learning process for me.
  1. CREATE YOUR OWN FLASHCARDS
I used those notes/outlines to pick out definitions, rules, elements and created my own flashcards from there. I tried using pre-made flashcards before but nothing was sticking because I was just reading off of someone else’s work and skipping the part where I have to understand/retain the information. Making my own flashcards really helped with this part. Each MBE topic had about 70-80 flashcards based on Grossman’s lectures
  1. MAKE A LIST OF FLASHCARD TERMS AND SEE HOW MANY YOU CAN ANSWER COLD
After I studied the flashcards, I would then make a list of all the flashcard terms on the computer screen and just see how many I could recognize/type out the flashcard answers to, cold from memory. I also did a version of this with handwriting in a notebook, but since I was typing for the exam, the typing helps with muscle memory so that when I saw those same terms on the Bar exam essay portion, my fingers just automatically went straight to work typing out everything I could remember from the flashcards onto Examsoft.
  1. SHORTEN THE LIST TO JUST FLASHCARDS YOU BLANK ON
I then made note of any flashcard terms that I went blank on or kept forgetting, and spent more time working on those and figuring out why they were more difficult for me to recall
  1. DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO HELP YOU ABSORB THE INFO
I made up my own pneumonics for lists that I had trouble with, but I knew I HAD to know. For example, you have to know what the powers of Congress are. It will help you on multiple choice questions to know what is being asked. Grossman lists out the main powers. For some reason, when I looked at the first letter of each power, I found a pattern that helped me – CND CST WAFF. What the hell is that, you ask? To me, it looked like abbreviations for Canada, Central Standard Time, Waffles. And that stuck with me easily and forever. Four months later, I can tell you the main powers of Congress are:
a. Coin Money
b. Necessary and Proper Clause
c. Delegating Power
d. Commerce Clause
e. Spending Power
f. Taxing Power
g. War Power
h. Aliens/Non-Citizens
i. Foreign Affairs
j. Federal Land
Even just knowing that, without the subrules for each power, I could eliminate anything having to do with Executive Branch/President/Judges on a multiple choice question involving any of these matters because I knew it was focusing on what Congress can and cannot do. And if there ever was an essay on Con Law Separation of Powers – this was gold that I could already list every power out and use it as a guideline. It was easier for me to make up ways that I personally could remember things, rather than using premade pneumonics. But as mentioned, roll with what makes YOUR life easier when it comes to packing in all of that information into your brain.
  1. REPLAY PARTS OF THE LECTURES YOU STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND
After I got comfortable with most of the flashcards, I would replay only parts of the lectures that were still giving me trouble. I found it really beneficial that Grossman lectures were divided up into 15-20 minute short audio clips. So I would go back to just the one on easements if I still could not get those practice questions/terms down cold. When I replayed the lectures, I got to the point where I found myself speaking in sync with Grossman. That was how I knew the memorization was finally kicking in. At that stage, I felt ready to move on from that specific topic and did not have to listen to those lectures again.
  1. SUPPLEMENT WITH CHEAT-SHEET TYPE OF OUTLINES
After “mastering” the memorization of all the Adaptibar lectures, I then used the shorter outlines (Themis Final Review Outlines and Bar Exam Lean Sheets) to supplement anything not covered by Adaptibar.
  1. SUPPLEMENT WITH ONLY PORTIONS OF FULL-LENGTH OUTLINES
And then finally, I added in any information from the longer full-length outlines that covered material I came across when doing multiple choice practice questions that I still did not know (I used Celebration Bar Review, but you can use Barbri, Kaplan, Themis – any big names out there). When working with full-length outlines, it would do you good to skip any cases mentioned or long-winded historical information that explained where the black letter law came from. *In law school, the final exams tend to expect you to know this – but on the Bar Exam, you DO NOT need to regurgitate any of this extraneous information and it will actually kill your time if you try to do so\*. Cross all of that information out and you will find that the 100-page outline is muchhhh shorter and digestible.
If you’re wondering, I did about 2000 multiple choice questions on Adaptibar and was scoring about 72% before exam day. I also switched over to Bar Prep Hero to make sure that the information could be applied to any multiple choice practice, not just the ones on Adaptibar (the NCBE questions were repeated over both platforms, but Bar Prep Hero also has their own company-written set).
Keep going, you're doing great!! You still have plenty of time to study so if you're feeling distraught right now - hit the reset button and power through.
Feel free to message me if you need advice or motivation, and if you're in the Atlanta area, I'm happy to give you all my study materials and tips in person.

2023.06.08 18:13 TangerineMaximum AI art generation system in the $1k range

What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Stable Diffusion, possibly light-moderate gaming like PSO2 and Skyrim with a hundred mods.
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$1000 preferably for tower. I do not trust rebates and will not consider them in pricing.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
2 weeks for something pre-assembled or with assembly assistance, 2 months if I have to get to a Microcenter and assemble myself.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower is the only mandatory part. I will handle peripherals myself, although a good monitor suggestion under $500 would be welcomed too. Keyboard/mouse optional.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
USA. Microcenter is a push, but I could get to one if it's an absolute world changer on price/performance.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
Presume no reuse, any reused peripherals would be temporary. I intend on getting a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Red switches and a wired mouse.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
No overclocking. I'm too likely to break stuff and performance boosts usually aren't worth the shorter system life to me.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
1TB SSD storage minimum, 2 preferable. If a monitor is suggested, size is the top concern.
What type of network connectivity do you need? (Wired and/or WiFi) If WiFi is needed and you would like to find the fastest match for your wireless router, please list any specifics.
Either way is fine.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
I like pretty things, but I'm bad at cable management and assembly. If pre-assembled or assembly on site is an option, I'll adjust on budget.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
I'll be getting Windows 11, not my ideal but the most practical. That's budgeted separately already.
Extra info or particulars:
I prefer something pre assembled due to some personal limitations. Self assembly is possible, just that it takes longer, anything that can go wrong will go wrong, I can't work with a cramped case, and cabling will be a nasty mess.

Build Help/Ready:

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.
Gaming PC for kids to play Minecraft, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and similar games.
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)
Looking for 1080p/60hz medium to high.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?
< $500, as low budget as possible.
In what country are you purchasing your parts?
US
PCPartPicker Build List
Provide any additional details you wish below.
I already have the RX 480, and obviously it would be the part holding back some performance. Some of the parts in the list above I've modified the price for MicroCenter prices.

Game: D&D 5e
Group type: Online
Experience: No experience necessary! New players welcome and encouraged!
Location/Time zone: GMT+1
Roles sought: Player (5 slots left as of posting)
Game style: Nice balance between roleplay, combat, exploration and puzzles. This helps new players get the full D&D experience in just 4 hours
Date/Time: 12 Noon and 7 pm every Wednesday! Seats are filling up quickly though so more dates may be made available
One-Shot Description
Are you new to D&D? Maybe just the 5e system? Well, this is the perfect place to start!
Deep within the forests of Oxrem rests a small and, until now, uneventful mining village named Eldoria. They provide a large amount of silver and copper for the realm. However, recently, they have found something much more. Perhaps something much worse. An underground temple from a time long ago, dedicated to a god that is even older. Historians and areologists have revelled at the chance to unearth the mysteries of this temple and have come in their dozens to study such a find. The locals are less than pleased. They say they are having nightmares, even when they are awake. The shadows have started to grow far too long. Maybe more than the temple was discovered. Something that was meant to be to be forgotten... That's where you come in. Tasked with being the first contact with this temple, to see what's really going on, the people of Eldoria are willing to pay a pretty penny.
Whether you are here for the adventure, the history or even just the coin, the people don't care so long as the job is done. This is a one-shot which over the course of 2-4 hours will showcase the main elements of D&D 5e. From roleplay to combat and everything in between this game is designed as a crash course for the system, while still providing the textbook fun D&D experience! With a DM who has taught over 20 people how to play the system and lots of patience and passion for teaching, this game is the perfect place for newbies to start! So grab a group or just join yourself! I can't wait to teach you this amazing game
About Me
Hey!
I adore Dungeons and Dragons 5e and have run games for over 7 years now. I have a passion for acting, writing and just in general creating. Over my many years playing the game I have only been a player a handful of times (I just love DMing that much) and thus have become somewhat of a veteran DM. Specifically, I have taught and helped over 20 new players how Dnd 5e works and have helped them find their way into and their place in the game. I feel everyone has a story to tell and I want to help them tell it! My aim as a DM is to guarantee a memorable and engaging adventure no matter the setting or events, while still letting my players take the reigns and make their own story. I invest hours into each session to make it just right for my players, because when I get to hear their laughter and excitement I know it was all worth it! I want to spread that excitement to as many people as possible (While still being able to pay rent) and watch them grow and evolve as players and maybe even people!
So why Paid Games?
I would love all my games to be free but I also need to keep my lights on! That being said there are some excellent benefits to hiring a professional DM:
The key word is professional!
As a Paid DM I will always show up, on time, and prepared
No last-minute cancellations (unless emergencies of course but there will be a reschedule)
I will be available to answer any questions at any time, just send me a message
If you join with a group, you and your friends don't have to worry about choosing a DM or being put on the spot as one. Just turn up and have fun!
If you are joining as an individual, the small fee will encourage people to turn up or give advanced notice for absences. That means no more no-shows!
You will have access to all my d&d beyond sourcebooks and extras (of which there are many) for no extra charge. I welcome experimentation so go nuts!
Balancing of games is guaranteed. This even includes any homebrew you think would be fun
Guarantee of detailed battle maps, dungeon maps, and world maps, made with professional software and available on Owlbear Rodeo VTT for no extra charge
A tailored experience just for you and your party!
A detailed custom homebrew world made (and still being made) for over 7 years, filled with lore, mysteries and deep, rich history
My standard price is $20 USD per player but the first 2 to sign up usually get 50% off. A trip to the cinema usually costs as much or more. A night out at the pub or the club with friends is definitely more. Instead, why not spend a little bit and get an unforgettable experience? My games usually run for 2-4 hours (But I tend to get excited and let them run on a bit if we're all having fun) so please consider grabbing your friends and checking this out!
So, You want in?
Check out the adventure at the link below

2023.06.08 18:12 hkesteloo RESPONSE TO PROPOSED DJI BAN, HOUSE BILL 2864, AND THE COUNTERING CCP DRONES ACT

RESPONSE TO PROPOSED DJI BAN, HOUSE BILL 2864, AND THE COUNTERING CCP DRONES ACT
You may already be aware of the ongoing attempts to restrict the use of DJI drones in the United States. Last year, we faced House Bill H6572, which has re-emerged this year as House Bill H2864. This legislation, proposed under the banner of the Countering CCP Drones Act by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY) and Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI), seeks to revise the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019. Specifically, it targets certain equipment and services manufactured by DJI Technologies for inclusion in the list of scrutinized communication devices.
https://preview.redd.it/nrwc86zejt4b1.jpg?width=1986&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e623b729441a76753615fc9e4f2e8760952c97af
The possible ban of DJI drones sparked considerable concern among drone enthusiasts, leading to a number of articles and videos on the subject. The heightened interest has prompted some people to seek assistance in articulating their concerns to their elected officials. DroneXL has compiled the following text for anyone wishing to voice their opinion to their Congressional representatives, to ensure that this proposed legislation does not result in an outright ban of DJI drones in the United States.
However, it's important to clarify that the possibility of a DJI drone ban isn't as imminent as some might believe. This sentiment is echoed by Ryan Latourette, the Director of Regulatory Affairs at Great Lakes Drone Company LLC, who explains:
Take note that H.R. 6572, a bill introduced in February 2022, did not progress beyond committee consideration. The current version, H.R. 2864, followed the same trajectory when it was introduced in April, immediately dispatched to committee where it is likely to stagnate. The original H.R. 6572 was supported by three sponsors, all from the GOP's periphery. Interestingly, one of these sponsors opted not to endorse the new bill.
Hence, this proposal lacks bipartisan support, is promoted by a niche group, and faces a divided House and Senate. It's doubtful it will reach the House floor unless endorsed by McCarthy.
Even if it passed the House, Senate Majority Leader Schumer would likely ignore it due to the lack of enthusiasm for bolstering fringe GOP initiatives. Moreover, it would still face the hurdle of a Democratic president. This scenario underscores the partisanship pervading politics. The landscape would be drastically different with bipartisan sponsorship.
Should you prefer to err on the side of caution and wish to reach out to your representatives, you're welcome to use the following text as a basis for your message.
Thanks to both Vic Moss from the DSPA and Ryan Latourette for providing input for this article.
Response template to the DJI Ban
Subject: Urgent Concerns Regarding Proposal to Amend the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019
Dear [Congressman/Congresswoman] [Last Name],
I hope this message finds you well. As a member of your district, I'm writing to express significant concerns about the proposed amendment to the Secure and Trusted Communications Networks Act of 2019.
The amendment in question, presented under the Countering CCP Drones Act by Congresswoman Elise Stefanik and Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-WI), aims to add certain equipment and services produced by DJI Technologies to the list of covered communications equipment.
While I understand the importance of safeguarding our communication networks, I believe the proposal has significant potential for unintended adverse impacts. I'd like to present the following critical arguments to underscore my concerns.
DJI drones benefit our society
DJI drones are renowned for their affordability, exceptional capabilities, wide availability, superior safety features, and user-friendly operation, making them a market leader in the industry and the obvious choice for many drone operators in various societal benefitting scenarios, including the following:
Safety and Emergency Response: DJI drones play a critical role in disaster management, such as fire outbreaks or floods, where they provide real-time data, aiding in quicker response times and preventing further harm. They're also used in Search and Rescue missions due to their ability to reach inaccessible areas.
Environmental Monitoring and Conservation: DJI drones are used in environmental monitoring, Wildlife conservation, and agricultural management. They can capture detailed images of a region's flora and fauna, monitor biodiversity, and even help detect illegal activities such as poaching.
Infrastructure Inspection and Maintenance: DJI drones make the inspection of critical infrastructure like bridges, power lines, and wind turbines safer and more efficient. They can access difficult areas, reducing the risk to human inspectors.
Delivery and Logistics: DJI drones can speed up deliveries and reduce traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. This can be particularly beneficial for delivering critical items, such as medicines in remote or difficult-to-reach locations.
Data Collection and Mapping: DJI drones provide accurate data for mapping and surveying purposes, benefiting sectors like construction, real estate, Archaeology, and forestry. They can create high-resolution 3D maps, track changes over time, and access remote locations.
Journalism and Filmmaking: DJI drones have revolutionized the media industry, offering new perspectives for News reporting, filmmaking, and sports broadcasting. They provide unique aerial views and can capture scenes that would be otherwise challenging or risky to film.
Jobs and Economy: The Drone Industry is predicted to create numerous jobs across various sectors, driving economic growth. According to the FAA, it could generate over $82 billion for the U.S. economy and create 100,000 new jobs by 2025.
Restricting DJI Technologies' contributions to our society could hinder technological progress and innovation, destabilize a vibrant economic sector, and cause severe disruptions to life-saving operations.
DJI drones pose no threat to national security
An extensive security audit, led by the acclaimed cybersecurity team at Booz Allen Hamilton, reaffirmed the absence of any data transmission from DJI drones to DJI, China, or any unexpected entities. Conducted under the auspices of PrecisionHawk's Unmanned Aerial Intelligence Technology Center of Excellence (UAS COE), the examination delved into three distinct DJI commercial drones. The conclusion of the audit, emphasizing the user's control over data collected via DJI drones, debunked claims of undisclosed data redirection from these devices. This audit stands as yet another independent confirmation of DJI products' security.
It's worth noting that DJI products have also undergone scrutiny by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, U.S. cybersecurity firm Kivu Consulting, U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, among others, and emerged with their security intact. To date, no definitive evidence of a Data Security threat tied to DJI drones has surfaced, demonstrating their reliability in safeguarding user data.
Concluding
In light of these concerns and considerations, I urge you to reconsider the proposed amendment. It is essential that we strike a balanced approach to national security without inhibiting technological innovation or economic growth.
I request that you reflect on my concerns during your deliberations over this amendment. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this issue and observing your actions in upcoming discussions and votes.
Thank you for your dedication to serving our community and preserving our shared values.
Sincerely,

2023.06.08 18:12 Firstonetolive Legolas! Do everything! - $80 budget Legolas, Master Archer brew.

How goes it people? Bringing you today a budget brew of Legolas, Master Archer! Now I loved Orlando Bloom's Legolas in the LotR trilogy (Less so in the Hobbit Prequels) and wanted to make a deck to venerate the Elf that could seemingly handle hundred of enemies.... yet still have a kill count less then a much younger dwarf.
Anyway Legolas starts out as a meager 1/4 for 3 with reach. However every-time he is targeted with a spell by you he gets a +1/+1 counter and everytime you target an opponents creature you get a free "Bite" effect. This makes him wonderful spot removal as "Fight" and "Bite" spells often pump him and kill 2 of your opponents creatures. This makes the build a mix of voltron, control, and spellslinger.
Down side is this deck is completely reliant on the Commander so protecting it is very key as losing it makes building it back up very much a pain.
So deck list is here and I will go over some highlights.
Very light on Creatures with only 5 besides our commander. Guardian Augment and Slippery Bogbonder both grant our commander hexproof. Kami of whispered hopes is a manadork and backup hardened scales effect. Forgotten ancient lets us pump up Legolas. But the real hidden gem for the deck is Greatbow Doyen. This turns all Legolas Bites and Fights into direct damage to opponents. Can easily let him rack up some huge damage and unexpected one shots.
Planeswalkers is just Garruk, Primal hunter mainly for the Draw.
Mana Rocks/Ramp are the fairly generic Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Though Vessel, Wild growth and Utopia Sprawl. You could obviously add more here but with as low to the ground as this deck runs I didn't find it that necessary.
Equipment is usual budget goodstuff. Basilisk Collar, Swiftfoot boots, Loxodon Warhammer. Sword of Vengenance and Belt of Giant Strength are flex slots that probably can be replaced with better equipment as budget allows. Shadowspear in particular would be a great boost to the deck but its price point is beyond what I'm doing for the deck.
Auras we have are mostly to help us draw, with another big boost in Hydra Growth. We also have Concord with the Kami and Season of Growth as enchantments to help keep the cards flowing and Hardened scales to scale up Legolas faster.
Then we get into instants and sorceries unusually for a mono green deck is over 40% of the deck with 33 instants and 8 sorceries. Most of these fall into 3 slots our Fight/bites, Protects, and Draws. For most of these its pick your poison on them as there is a wide selection of them that you should pick based more around what you expect to face. I tend to go for more instant speed Fights/Bites over the cheaper sorcery speed brethren. Protection is a mix of Indestructible and Hexproof or both. And draw is whatever we can find in green.
In lands we have Mostly forest only of note are Detection tower, Tyrite Sanctum, and War Room for obvious reasons.
Welp that wraps it up. I think there might be a few other cards from the LotR set that can fit. I think the is another really good fight/bite spell called Windsomthing slice that looked goods but I can't find anymore. Best of luck to you all and have fun with this. In testing the deck has done quite well.

2023.06.08 18:11 Fuggggggggggn Anyone know anything about the graphene space?

Hey pals!! I’ve been super bullish on the graphene sector recently so I’ve been doing my best to look for a company I deem to have some potential. While looking through the sector I came across Black Swan Graphene. I really liked them as I seen that they had just posted an update on a project they were working on. The project was an industrial park and it’s concrete pour, which seemed pretty solid after I gave it a read through. I feel pretty decent about these guys but would love to get some more insight on them before I do anything. From what I gathered I made a list of positives and negatives so that hopefully I can get some quick feedback.
Take backs/uncertainties:
The graphene sector is still in its early stages and I’m unsure how well other industries will take it. Will they adapt to it? Or just stick with what they know and use normally?
I’m worried that the price of using an alternative material may deter other companies from using their material (I’m not 100% sure if it costs more but I feel like alternative materials usually cost more)
I feel like I’m unsure or uncertain about how well they’ll be able to market their products to companies that may be interested in. How will they attract customers? Is there other companies doing something similar? What makes Black Swan different?
Things I like:
Graphene has tremendous potential in various industries, such as electronics, energy storage, healthcare, and construction. Their focus on advanced materials positions them well to capitalize on this growing demand.
The company's recent partnerships and projects give me a feeling that they will be successful going forward in the space. They just need to find a way to be more appealing to the customer which they can easily fix.
Everyone and their mothers are looking to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable so I feel like they’re positioned very well in that sense. Going forward I think we’ll start to see more and more organizations use graphene.
These are just my early thoughts on Black Swan and the graphene space so I would love to hear some more insight on what everyone else is thinking. I think graphene has some serious potential but I’m not sure how long it will take for other organizations and companies to adapt to it.

2023.06.08 18:11 i_like_edibles How is Hexaorb Aquamarine Tier 1???

I'm REALLY frustrated with this deck. I've been playtesting this deck COUNTLESSLY, getting and learning every advice that I got from here and other places, tried countless of different topping builds, added Spiral Cutie and other expensive and apparently "good" cards in hexaorb's deck, and I STILL, more often than not, LOSE to every deck imaginable with this deck. I even feel like I gaslit myself into thinking that I'm simply too stupid, even though I followed all the advice pretty well. What the hell is wrong with the deck? Really. I'm really frustrated to the deck because I'm mainly a Keter player, and I already invested in hexaorb expecting for it to top against at least half of the fights I do. What hurts is the fact that I lose to a matchup where, initially, hexaorb has an advantage, or a deck that is known to be tier 2. Early turns are poor (even with Quadracast and Effulgent), Persona ride turn doesn't hurt much (either because the the opp's damage is still low enough where they can take most of the high powered ones, or the opp has 3-4 pgs on hand), and the deck can't last as long as my dead grandma because the opp's field is a multi attack, high power field and/or my hand is small (even with using Spiral Cutie and Octaray). I'm already at rock bottom here with hexaorb and I'm thinking to sell all the cards that I originally bought to build it, and head back to lowly Gramgrace. Seriously, to hell with this deck. To help with understanding my losses, here's a list of all the decks that my Hexaorb lost to in CFA that I can remember: (all of these are with the new support)
With my experience with the deck established, is it really worth it to go all in to invest in a Hexaorb "Aquamarine" deck? Because rn, I'm leaning towards no.

Sincerely, me

2023.06.08 18:11 Thertch Return of the Obra Dinn Makes a Short and Mediocre Story One of the Most Engaging Narrative Experiences of All Time (Spoilers)

It only took about half an hour or so, and Return of the Obra Dinn had its anchor hooked into me so deep there was no escape. This is the type of game which doesn’t just pull, but rips you in with a harmonious approach centred around two main ideas:
One – its structure, and two – how progression is gated.
On the second point, it is a rare type of game whose very progression is untethered from any higher-level mechanical input, but instead occurs entirely within your own mind. This is a concept which is so rarely pulled off well, that the notable success stories in this domain (namely Return of the Obra Dinn itself, and the Outer Wilds) have become modern cult classics.
Conventional is the last thing Return of the Obra Dinn can be called. What I find absolutely fascinating about this game is how it uses all the unique elements in its toolset to tell a grossly engaging story with a book-like quality, and has done so with minimal dialogue and practically zero text. I want to dissect what makes this game ‘special’ so to speak. How the solo developer, Lucas Pope, has done the impossible and made a more than worthy game in the wake of Papers Please.
Against all odds, the game manages to make what is honestly a fairly mediocre story by contemporary standards, one of the most engaging, satisfying and enjoyable narrative experiences of all time which is far stronger than the sum of its parts.

A quick preface so I don’t ruin anyone’s life:

This is one of those games you can only play once. I’m spoiling the hell out of the game here. For anyone who hasn’t played the game, and you think there’s even a 0.1% chance you’ll play this one day, go away. I don’t want you here. In fact, look at yourself in the mirror until you can change that to 100%. I’d love to write something that would convince people who haven’t played to actually play, but by the one-and-done nature of the game, that would not be easy. Instead, you have to take it on blind faith and just play it. No game is for everyone of course, but I think at least tyring this game is for everyone.

So now that it’s just the cool kids, let’s do it.

Come on, mediocre is a bit harsh right?:

Maybe it is. However, I don’t think the strength of the game is the narrative itself. The writing is tight, the most common characters on the ship, the Obra Dinn, are generally believable and fleshed out, but I don’t think there much being said in the narrative proper. Essentially, a ship is delivering for the East India company. It turns out that a group of Formosans (a republic within current day Taiwan which existed very briefly during when the game is set, an insanely niche yet accurate addition I have to add) were transporting a supernatural seashell. Someone else tries to steal this, which incites various sea monster attacks of the Obra Dinn. Most of everyone gradually dies. The sea monsters eventually stop attacking, and the remaining survivors turn on each other for various reasons. Then finally, the captain of the ship kills his fellow shipmen in self-defence, and finally himself in the wake of the loss and destruction. There’s not really much in the way of character development, not really much meat to make a layered story. But hey, that’s actually totally ok, because that’s not the point of the game. This is a simple enough story, and the structure of the game around this story elevates it to heights that shouldn’t be possible, but Lucas Pope pulls it off.

Structuring a detective story – not so elementary my dear Wattson:

The story told in this game is structured as a non-linear story. The non-linear concept is key to Return of the Obra Dinn. We’ll get back to why, but at the surface, its not overly interesting. This is pretty much the standard format for how the minor narratives of detective stories (that is, the story of the mysteries themselves) are structured. Think about your classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, or even a standard L.A. Noire crime (if you let me be a bit reductive for a moment):
  1. Introduction to the conclusion of the event (someone was robbed and murdered in an alley!).
  2. Looking for clues to figure out what happened (the person was shot).
  3. Investigation of characters peripheral to the event (interviewing the suspects, one of the suspects has the victim’s watch).
  4. In a minor twist mid-narrative recontextualises the story thus far (the watch guy was framed, and it was his twin brother the whole time).
  5. The wise, pretentious detective recounts the story in chronological order, and everything clicks into place finally.
Essentially, the basic structure is a story told in reverse chronological order. This is what allows the mystery to remain tense and exciting the whole way through. For many, the satisfaction of a good mystery is in trying to solve the mystery alongside the detective protagonist, and the catharsis of the final reveal. Especially if you’ve been particularly observant and picked up the clues earlier than the overarching story delivers them.
A weakness with this mode of mystery structure in a standard story is that the audience doesn’t always share the ‘ah ha!’ moment of the protagonist. Sometimes this is by design to subvert expectations, but in the cases where it’s not, it can lead to a disappointing mystery. In the medium of video games, this can become a particular issue where a disconnect is much more dangerous. I mentioned L.A. Noire before. This bridges the gap somewhat as the win state of the game hinges on correctly solving cases. So, you’re incentivised to go beyond just passively consuming the mystery, but to actual solve the mystery. Ultimately though, these stories can just be played without any conviction if the player is getting bored or confused, and the detective roleplay element is lost.
Return of the Obra Dinn is almost a direct solution to this problem, and works as a much better detective game, at least, than something like L.A. Noire or a Sherlock Holmes game. (For reference I love L.A. Noire, I would never say it’s a bad game, pls forgive me for my transgressions Team Bondi, I miss you). Return of the Obra Dinn has almost the same structure in its overall narrative as the 5 points I mentioned above. But in this case, the main narrative is focused on the mystery of the ship, the Obra Dinn. The linearly paced present-day story has little of the game’s focus. It is thus fundamentally non-linear, and this is what gives it the detective mystery feel. This non-linearity is felt throughout every fibre of the game though, as its not just a reverse recount of a mystery story, but instead, the game mechanics for exploration itself has you travelling through time non-chronologically. So you’re there piecing together the mystery, travelling from the conclusion to the beginning through time itself, like a true detective, but in a meta way.
This is combined with the physical progression the player (i.e., the insurance auditor) makes through the game. You have to go deeper into the ship, downwards, to progress through the mystery. So, you travel from recent events to events further in the past as you simultaneously travel deeper into the ship, the whole while travelling deeper into the mystery itself. It is an excellent way to sell the feeling of solving a mystery with pacing alone.
And about that pacing. The bulk of the story could be told upfront in a linear way, with all the details present in a full playthrough, in probably about 10 minutes. But you solve the mystery of everyone’s death one by one and are drip-fed exposition for the story of the Obra Dinn over about 10 hours instead. You feel like you know all 60 people who served on the ship personally by the time you’re done, and you walk away with an investment in the narrative few other games in the mystery genre could even fathom achieving.
Ultimately the reverse-order solution gives sense of constant discovery. Exposition is rarely direct, and instead is embedded in the discovery process itself.

Gate my progression Daddy:

So, the pacing and structure of the game is fantastic, and tuned just right to sell the detective mystery narrative and feel. That is only half of the story though as the progression system of the game is so unique in the wider landscape of video games.
Mechanically, the game is dead simple. You walk around and watch scenes of the deaths of people on the Obra Dinn. You then have to deduce, by clicking some boxes, what each person’s name was, what their fate was (usually death), and who was responsible for their fate. Sounds simple, but the game makes a lot of this very obscure for most of the fates. You therefore figure out the fates only through your own deduction. You are the one who must investigate the scene. You are the one who interprets the evidence. You are the one who must recontextualise new evidence to understand the mystery. No one is there to do this for you. Most importantly, to ‘progress’ you must fill in the fates yourself. All of these processes occur in the mind, it’s a logic puzzle at its core, but one which mimics the process of roleplaying a detective. The exposition is the gameplay here, where understanding the mystery of the Obra Dinn is what progresses the narrative, and thus the game. The “guess 3 to reveal whether you’re correct” system (mostly) prevents cheese as well, leaving everything up to deduction.
This is all unlike L.A. Noire, which is less logic, and more about trying to quantify how scrunched up someone’s face is. L.A. Noire is also more mechanically demanding with combat and gunplay as well, decoupling progression even further from pure deduction. In Return of the Obra Dinn, one’s brain is constantly firing to process the logic – with very little stimulus. So much of the game takes place in the mind, not on the screen.
A lot of people say this game makes them feel like a genius. The deep connection between game progression and narrative is exactly why. You discover the story through your own logic, and in order to finish the game, you necessarily need to have successfully completed the logic puzzles of the game (the fates). So, you feel like a genius for simply pursuing the core gameplay loop. Additionally, player agency over the experience of the story (specifically over the non-linearity of time) creates a sense of immersion and fuels the desire to uncover the mystery and thus the narrative.
So, the structure of the game makes puts the events of the game in such a way that you fill in the detective roleplay. This so powerfully synergises with the gameplay systems themselves that you have this narrative experience so encapsulating, very few games come even close to competing. There is one last thing which sells the experience.

Muh’ immersions:

The game could have perfect pacing, a perfect narrative structure, a satisfying logic progression system, but that doesn’t mean you’ll want to keep playing the game. You have to be invested in the moment-to-moment presence, since a lot of what you’re doing is walking around and looking. That’s why the meticulous attention to immersion, and to the details within the worldbuilding are a crucial part of the game. Return of the Obra Dinn is a wonderfully immersive game, whose immersive qualities blend together with the non-linear structure to not just pull, but rip you into the games narrative and world.
I mentioned before that the game has a book-like quality. What I mean by this is that the mind does so much ‘fill in the blanks’ throughout the game. This is in large part due to the 1-bit art style. It cements a wonderfully unique identity to the game which makes it instantly recognisable, but more importantly it allows the game to play out as if every frame were an intentionally designed piece of 1-bit artwork. The simplicity of the low resolution and the binary colour presentation means your mind fills in a lot of the gaps. It kinda feels halfway between reading a setting in a book, and seeing a setting realised on film or in a photorealistic render. Because your mind is doing a lot of the heavy lifting, your enveloped in the world. This extends so brilliantly to the sound design, especially when you’re below deck. The creaking of the ship as it bobs in the water. The sound of waves crashing out in the infinitely encompassing ocean. The the moments of silence which briefly fill in the in-betweens as you process the mystery around you. It ground the player in such a strong sense of presence.
Before each ‘scene’ in the game where you experience someone’s death, the screen is blank except for captions of the words spoken by the people in the scene. Your mind ignites with imagination as the soundscape tells its own story alongside. Then, the scene arrives, and it’s static. No animations. A picture might tell a thousand words, but they tell 1000 different permutations of 1000 words, and no two interpretations of events in Return of the Obra Dinn’s death scenes will every be perfectly identical. It a balanced dichotomy of explicit visual and auditory presentation with enough missing information to execute the book-like quality of its presentation.
At the same time, everything in and on the ship is believable, and this is in no small part to the immense research Lucas Pope did to have accurate attention to detail. The ship design, the crew structure, the geography of the ship’s voyage. When you go to check after the fact, it is all impressively accurate (with the exception of the number of people on the ship, Pope has mentioned he had to cut the realistic number down to 60 so he could actually finish making the game). It might not quite fit here, but I absolutely have to shout out the soundtrack as well. It sounds like someone was told “this organ is on fire, you have 3 minutes to play its final piece, go”. It gives a sense of grandeur to the wider narrative and world. I’m astounded that a generalist like Lucas Pope has such refined skills across his disciplines that everything from the gameplay to the art design, to even the soundtrack, which he did so himself, are all of such high quality. It clearly helps in executing such a precise creative vision like that in Return of the Obra Dinn.

Conclusion (lucky I didn’t make my critique non-linear):

What a follow up to Papers Please. I think Papers Please was a more popular game in general, and in interviews, Lucas Pope has said he actually prefers Papers Please himself. However, Return of the Obra Dinn shows this is not a one-hit-wonder situation. I think both games work well for different reasons. Having single name authorship on games is very rare, and Pope has earned his title here as a video game auteur in my opinion.
Despite the simple narrative in the game, every single aspect of game design comes together to pull of the ‘more than the sum of its parts’ effect. In particular, the game is trying to sell a detective roleplaying experience. It is not the plot or story itself, but the non-linear narrative structure in harmony with the mental meta progression, and sharp immersive qualities of the game which hook you in. You always want to figure out the next three fates. You always want to understand the mystery with an insatiable curiosity. You want to pin everything on the captain.
Executing a game like this clearly isn’t an easy task. While simple on the surface, a lot of creative design has to come together from different disciplines of video game development. It might not be an overly popular subgenre (exploration-focused logic games), but I think there’s a reason so few exist beyond the explanation of demand. It’s hard to weave together an intricate world which is paced in such a way that the player is engaged from beginning to end. It doesn’t take much to shatter a link in such a long chain.
I don’t really know of many other games which exist in this category. I mentioned The Outer Wilds, which has a similar mental- and logic-gated progression grounded in in-game discovery. I know The Case of the Golden Idol operates similarly to Return of the Obra Dinn, but I haven’t played this myself so I can give any input here. What I can say is that for me, Return of the Obra Dinn stands tall and proud in a small list of exceptional games of detective progression systems by virtue of a breadth of expert design.

2023.06.08 18:11 ghawthorne35 The Best Sustainable Eyewear Brands

It would be an understatement to say that our world has seen better days given the blazing wildfires in California, a string of tropical storms, and some of the highest recorded temperatures in history this summer. The good news is that there are practical ways that we can contribute to its preservation, and sustainable shopping is one of them.
A nice pair of sunglasses in Sri Lanka can make all the difference in the world! You can buy a pair of sunglasses online in Sri Lanka this summer that will shield your eyes from the sun, showcase your sense of style, and benefit Mother Earth. Uncertain about where to start? Then, have a look at this list of the top eco-friendly sunglasses companies that sell shades and contact lenses online.
See2see.
17.6 billion tonnes of plastic are thrown into the ocean every year. By 2050, all of the fish in the ocean will be outweighed by ocean plastic, according to Conservation International. Alarming figures like these served as the impetus for Sea2see, an Italian startup that creates "a statement of change" rather than just spectacles.
Sea2See collects waste materials like ropes and fishnets and uses them to make sustainable optical frames and sunglasses. They do this by working closely with fishermen's communities in 27 different regions of Spain and 10 coastal regions of Ghana. The company uses an upcycling approach to convert waste plastic into reusable raw materials, making waste a crucial component of its supply chain. When you wear a pair of their sunglasses, you are also doing your part to maintain the health of the oceans and the creatures who inhabit them.
Genusee.
Genusee, a company with its headquarters in Flint, Michigan, makes glasses out of recycled plastic water bottles from the ongoing water crisis. This programme not only saves waste but also helps the neighbourhood's economy by giving displaced workers jobs. Sunglasses from Genusee are completely UVA/UVB protected and oh-so-chic!
Dresden.
Dresden's sleek, plastic eyeglasses are heavily influenced by German design while having an Australian heritage. According to their website, "The paradox of German design is also the essence of Dresden's approach." "Both natural and technical, both enjoyable and useful.
"Dresden's most exciting point of difference is in the 'one shape fits all' modular design," claims Bonnie Hudson, head of communications. "The one timeless frame form is available in four different sizes and many colour combinations to complement virtually any face. To suit their mood or the situation, the wearer can switch out the interchangeable arms, front, and lenses.
Sunski.
Everyone may find a pair of sunglasses from Sunski, from fashionistas to outdoor enthusiasts! The varieties include aviator, clubmaster, round, and wayfarer. These comfortable sunglasses with recycled materials will keep your eyes protected.
MITA.
Miami-based company MITA creates eyewear that is inspired by the city's brilliant and colourful features, such as the murals on Wynwood Walls and the nearby street art. MITA, an organisation committed to "redefining the relationship between fashion and sustainability," upcycles five water bottles to make one pair of chic eco-glasses. With the aim of addressing the low recycling rates in both the US and Europe, they have recycled 81,000 water bottles as of this writing. Their entire line of eyeglasses is created from recycled materials, even the cases and cleaning rags.
Pala.
Pala is an eyewear brand that supports the community. For every pair purchased, eye treatment is provided to a person in need in Africa, which is home to 73% of the world's visually impaired people. This care is offered in the form of funding given to vision clinics, pharmacies, and screening programmes in collaboration with the worldwide non profit organisation Vision Aid Oversea. Every pair of sunglasses is cruelty-free and vegan. According to the Pala website, starting this year, all new models will be created with Italian bio-acetate, making the eyewear completely plant-based and 100% biodegradable.
The firm adds that as they continue on their path towards sustainable fashion, they will make all of their upcoming designs as eco-friendly as they can, including "both recycled acetate and bio-based designs housed in eco-friendly recyclable packaging and with carbon offset shipping."
Ballo.
Ballo started creating unisex sunglasses by hand in 2013 using recycled and reused materials, and since then, they have been in the sustainability industry. Every time a pair of sunglasses is sold, a tree is planted in Cape Town, South Africa, where all items are created and made. Ballo creates fashionable sunglasses from materials like cork and hemp, in addition to UV420 blue light-blocking lenses, which reduce eye strain from prolonged screen use.
Proof.
For Proof, which was established in 2020 by three brothers from Idaho (who acquired "sawdust in their veins" from working in the family sawmill), their goal of leaving the world in a better state than they found it entails handcrafting eyewear using eco-friendly materials like wood, recycled aluminium, recycled skateboard decks, and cotton-based acetate. In addition to eyewear, Proof also offers a variety of other items manufactured from these natural resources, including wallets, water bottles, reusable straws, and other accessories. The business, which started off with "one laptop and a rack of sunglasses" in a garage, has since expanded to build its own flagship location in Boise.
Waterhaul.
Another eyewear company attempting to clean up dangerous plastic trash from the ocean is Waterhaul. Using mechanical recycling and a "specialised injection moulding process," high-performing eyewear built entirely from recycled fishing nets is the end product. Fishing nets are made of sturdy materials, which is how they can withstand years of exposure to the ocean, but this also means that Waterhaul frames will have an equivalently long lifespan. The company, which has its headquarters in Newquay, Cornwall, claims to be working with Iberian fishermen to offer incentive programmes so they won't need to rely on landfills to get rid of their nets (and pay expensive disposal fees).
These ethical brands all care about their consumers' and the environment's wellbeing. Finding ways to sustain our world is essential given the growing human population. The decisions we make every day are where this shift begins for us.
