2023.03.20 15:49 BettaScaper Help! Sick Betta!

I’ve had my female beta, Gretta, for 6 months now, and she is the most robust, energetic, strong beta I have ever kept. She lives in a 16 gallon fully planted/aquascape tank with a couple of danios and snails and another female beta. Unfortunately I fell stupidly for the popular internet delusion that two females can share a tank peacefully. Just putting it out there that that is garbage nonsense in my experience now.
I woke up one morning and Gretta’s tail had been torn in a fight with the other female beta. I removed Gretta from the 16-gallon and put her into my 3-gallon tank that I use to propagate plant clippings (filtered and cycled). After a week there she was starting to heal and all of a sudden her fin got a red dot on it. After 12 hours the dot got bigger and I knew it was spreading.
Immediately I removed her and put her into my 1 gallon emergency hospital vase with a tiny heater. I gave her an acute treatment of 1 tablespoon salt into 1 gallon for a few hours with heater, then diluted the mixture 1:1 with fresh water, and put her into the vase heated hospital tank.
Her tail turned bright red, further tore in half, then completely fell off. It’s been 3 days now and I don’t know what to do, I change the water daily and add new salt solution to try to contain the infection. I’m hand feeding her frozen brine shrimp and she still had a huge appetite. She still swims around (unbelievably) but not as active because her tail is gone.
Anyone know what else I can do? Im really upset and I don’t want to lose her. I already bought a 6 gallon tank for her to live solo, heavily planted. Any ideas to help heal her would be great :(

2023.03.20 15:49 gamer_osh How do I emulate mouse movement with a head tracker like OpenTrack on Linux?

I'm looking for info on how to emulate mouse pointer movements with a head tracking app like OpenTrack so that I can use head tracking in games that don't officially support head tracking. For example, Squad does not support head tracking, but has an option to control the player's head with the mouse. If I can find a way to control my mouse pointer through OpenTrack, then I can effectively get head tracking in Squad. This would enable me to fly helis with HOTAS without giving up the ability to look around without taking my hand off the joystick.
Searches for mouse emulation on Linux yield many posts about emulating mice inputs through the command line, but that's not what I want.
I've already set up head tracking on Pop OS 22.04 LTS with OpenTrack v2022.3.2-51-ge9c0b30f and AITrack v0.7.1-alpha, but I cannot figure out how to control my mouse with the head tracking. The screenshots in the online guides for OpenTrack (in Windows) show mouse tracking as an option in the OpenTrack output drop down, but no such option is present in Linux.
Screenshots:
I've reviewed the following forum posts and documentation:
I posted this question over on linux_gaming and didn't get any traction. Can anyone point me in the right direction how to emulate mouse movement with head tracking? I'm not married to Pop OS if a solution exists on a Fedora or Arch based distro. Thank you!

2023.03.20 15:48 freeasaweed First scan today..

I’m having a very hard day today. I deal with recurrent loss. And, I have my first ultrasound of this pregnancy this afternoon.
I’ve been coping way better than I usually do this pregnancy - I really felt okay leading up to today. I felt very at peace with any outcome and it’s been the best mental space I’ve been in for any of my pregnancies. But, last night my anxiety really kicked in and I am having a hard time coping today.
Still have a solid 6 more hours till my scan & I just know it’s gonna feel like 6 years.
I’m 8+3 & all my losses have been on or before 8+0 (with 4 being missed miscarriages that I didn’t know had passed until 9+ weeks) so we should get a pretty clear answer. The waiting is just killing me today

2023.03.20 15:48 jumpair Advice for a new gaming PC [UK]

Hello,
I am looking for your advice please on the components I am planning for a new gaming PC build, to be ready by the end of April at the latest, but want to start finalising the items now.
I will be playing on a 27'' 1440p monitor, potentially 4K in the future, so don't mind if it's an overkill.
I am not planning to OC, but want to make sure the GPU is not bottle-necked by the CPU.
The build is below with my comments:
1) CPU - fine with 13900K, need it to keep up with RTX 4090.
2) CPU cooler - like the Noctua one, would prefer to avoid liquid ones if it's realistic to keep the temps safe.
3) Motherboard - leaning towards a Z790 one, this is where the advice would be welcome. Going for 2x16GB DDR5 RAM below, so hope it would have no compatibility/BSOD issues with the board RAM slots.
It should at least include Wifi6, 2.5GBit LAN port, the rest is a bonus.
I'm not bothered about M.2 Gen5, unless included as a bonus.
4) RAM - 2x 16 GB DDR5 as above
5) Storage - M.2 SSD 2TB, deciding between Western Digital Black SN850X and Samsung 990 Pro, whichever is faster for gaming performance, even if slightly. Unless I missed a better Gen4 contender.
I don't want to wait for M.2 Gen5 ones, unless they are around the corner (and coming to the UK)
6) GPU - RTX 4090, leaning towards Gigabyte Gaming OC, unless a better one can be recommended
7) Case - Full ATX, not decided, your recommendations are apprecaited, I understand that with the CPU and GPU, they will need excellent cooling, so whichever will work best (if can avoid water cooling).
8) Power supply - Corsair HX1200 Platinum 1200 W 80+ Fully Modular, should leave enough room even for these components.
9) Monitor - already owned, 2x 27'' 1440p with Gsync
10) OS - Windows 10 Pro
11) Fans - no idea how to plan for case fans/extra fans and fan controllers, have not done it before properly.
12) Cooling paste for CPU - any decent one

2023.03.20 15:46 littleepatina I've never had to do this before?

applied for a part time position. phone interview within a few days of submitting my application, invited for an interview. interview went well and ended with the manager saying they think I'd be a great fit & that they want someone to start within 2 weeks.
a week passes (waiting for 2nd interview to be scheduled), the manager offers me the job without their boss' consent. a few days later, get an email that I actually do need a second interview. schedule it, do the interview, that manager says they want to clone 20 of me. background check gets completed within 4 days, I receive onboarding emails 6 days post interview but don't receive a response to my email asking for an update until 9 days post interview.
the manager sends some days for onboarding paperwork, I send back my availability. the first day within our availability is today, and I still haven't heard from them after 3 attempts to reach out. do I just walk in?
Tldr; accepted a position and am questioning it now due to lack of communication.

2023.03.20 15:42 3odxnextoi Falling behind.. advice?

I am an architect in UK/Ireland. I did my Part I 2005-2008, part II 2009-2011, and Part III 2016-2017.
I am now 12 years post-Part II, but I have rarely worked on anything beyond the grant of planning permission.
I have talent and ability, but I have struggled with focus and motivation throughout my career. As an undergrad, I really coasted 1st and 2nd year, then knuckled down in 3rd year and got a good grade. As a postgrad, I coasted 4th year, but knuckled down in 5th year and again got a good grade.
I graduated in 2011 and struggled to find a permanent mortgagable job due to the GFC. I took contract work in a number of practices for the first 3 years, a couple of those I worked really well at, others I got too distracted with the social side of office life and neglected my work.
I moved towards large scale resi-led architecture / urban design / masterplanning and as a result tended to work a lot on early design stages up to and sometimes including planning application. I did work construction stages on an apartment building and got as far as the structural topping out ceremony, but then I moved from London to Ireland with my new wife and child.
In Ireland there is far less of the work I am used to doing and emphasis seems to be much more oriented to detail design and construction stages. I landed a job with a good practice here and kept it for 6 years, but in that time I got completely pigeon holed as 'the urbanism guy' and 'the InDesign/Photoshop guy'. I worked a couple of jobs up as far as securing planning permission, but have not built anything, nor have I run a job independently with a subordinate team. Pretty much all my work during this time was in early stage brief development, 'quick feasibility studies', graphic support work, etc.
I have now quit that job as I could see I was going nowhere fast. I was not growing or progressing my skills. I was not well supported and was just treading water while I was focussed on my personal life - young family, speculative investments, family home renovations, then later divorce, and covid.
I am now self employed as I have invested in a zoned development site and am designing a scheme of duplexes to go on it. I hope to significantly raise the value of the site by securing planning permission for the scheme, after which time I will either sell the site for profit, or see about securing construction finance.
I feel like I have this huge gap in my competency having never actually run a project through detail design, tendering, and construction. Especially not one as large and complex as this one. I always figured I will return to the more traditional practice workforce once I have done this duplexes scheme, but my fear is that i am growing older and still lacking in some core experience and skills, am I becoming undesirable as an employee? And also undesirable as a solo practicing architect, as I cant deliver on what I design.
What should I do?

2023.03.20 15:41 panzeeforharambe Do not rent from this group, horrible rental experience

WARNING DO NOT RENT FROM THIS PERSON
i have a story to tell about a horrible experience with a property manager. This home has been up for rent in waverly bedford area, 6 redbud drive.
This woman is an absolute nutcase. Extremely rude over the phone and argumentative, she had a set date for us to see the basement apartment for sale. Beforehand she asked for two months of paystubs from our employers to bring with us. Upon arriving she was immediately blunt about their screening process and selectiveness. Which is fine. But the fact that she kept interrupting and spouting bs at us. She went on a very long racist tangent about not allowing certain racial groups to rent out their properties, going to the point of blocking any messages from that minority group simply because of their race. She also put us an a situation where she berated millennials right in front of us for 20 minutes. Her ego was massive, constantly spewing nonsense about her “amazing” works of art and how much they sell for etc etc. the showing ended after all of this and we were unsure. Because despite her saying they dropped 80k on renos, the basement apartment didn’t look so nice whatsoever. But times are tough in this market and 1400$/mo is very cheap and affordable.
She had asked for our employers information as well to act as references because she had planned to make a final decision by monday the 20th.
Cut to today (may 20th), she contacted my girlfriend’s employer and constantly talked over her, acted very rudely. At the first sign of miscommunication the shower had hung up the phone abruptly.
Next she contacted my employer, same deal. The shower asked about my wages and my employer said that she provided me with the paystubs, (which i gave the woman that Saturday). After hearing this the shower hung up the phone on my employer saying “that was a massive red flag.” Okie dokie. You have my paystubs, but okay.
Just when you thought it was done, we thought didn’t have the place. This woman calls my girlfriends work number and offers her a deal, not without insulting our intelligence first.
She wanted 1: 700$ damage deposit 2: 1st months rent 3: 12th months rent All of that, now. 3500$. Just because my girlfriends yearly income meant she couldn’t “qualify.” Even though our income is combined.
It was a no before all that.definitely. My girlfriend told her no over the phone. Not even 20 minutes later she calls me. I decline her offer because its insane, but i let her know that we would be reporting her. Shes blown up my phone, my girlfriends phone, and called her work several times.
In summary: This woman has a massive ego and loves the sound of her own voice. Her opinions are skewed and nothing but truth comes out of her skull in her eyes. She is racist. Ignorant and rude. Extremely UNPROFESSIONAL.

2023.03.20 15:40 thisisfun661 Humidity Issue

I’m working on dialing in humidity for my first grow in my 2x4 tent, but I can’t seem to get it right. I’m trying to get settings on all my equipment dialed in so it doesn’t need constant adjustment and stays in the right range of VPD.
My equipment: INKBIRD IHC-200-Wifi connected to 4” dial controlled exhaust 3 Govee H5179 temp humidistats Levoit LV600S smart humidifier AC Infinity 6” clip fan constant on (osc.low) 4” AC Infinity duct booster active venting cool air into the tent info diffuser pointing up (this has a dial speed setting - tried this on and off)
Basically, all the hygrometers on the 3 different devices read different. The 3 Govees are usually pretty close to one another but the INKBIRD is way off of that and the LV600S might as well not have a sensor because it’s way off.
I got the Levoit humidifier because I can set up schedules and do cool and warm mist, depending on lights. Temps get down to 60 with lights off and up to mid 80’s with lights on, so I figured warm mist lights off, cool mist lights on. Outside air is super dry at 30% humidity. Too much humidity and the exhaust kicks on and knocks it down pretty hard. Then it has to build back up. Of course, the Levoit is not sensitive enough to catch this for a few mins.
I just can’t get everything to agree and not be constantly battling peaks and valleys that are either too humid or too dry. Planning to run in coco, so dry is my concern.
I figure it’s a game of averages(?) but not sure if that’s right? As long as the VPD averages in the veg range for the time, should be good? But I don’t want to do that during flower because the spikes could bring mildew/rot?
Any advice would be appreciated.
TLDR: got 3 different “smart” devices to help measure and manage humidity and they all disagree I’m not “smart” enough to figure it out. Lol

2023.03.20 15:40 belangem $ENVX: Electric Feel

$ENVX: Electric Feel
I’m back! And for the first time ever, I have a LONG DD (well not in the sense of length, this one is pretty short in fact)! Let’s get this out of the way first: No, I didn’t "invent" this play. I’m not trying to claim paternity of anything. In fact, pretty much all my DDs come from other people’s ideas that I dig deeper and when my own research come to the conclusion that it’s a high potential play, I go on with a DD. Is this another Marc Cohodes idea like CVNA? Well, yes, my original "tip" for this play came from Cohodes but my passion for CVNA came way before he jumped on the bandwagon, thanks to my bae u/LordBrosephYoloson. Oh and I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT interested in the loss porn you might incur with this stock, so put on your big girls pants! Ok, now that we got this out of the way, let’s get to it.
What they do Enovix design, develop and manufacture advanced silicon-anode lithium-ion batteries for a variety of usages. Their unique patent allows for higher-density, faster charging and their BrakeFlow technology that prevents overheating and thermal runaway that you see in lithium-ion incidents where batteries catch fire. Enovix is also developing its 3D cell technology and production process for the electric vehicle and energy storage markets.
Management Enovix current CEO, Raj Talluri, joined the company in January 2023. He previously was senior vice president and general manager of the Mobile Business Unit at Micron and before that, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Qualcomm’s IoT business unit. Recently hired, Raj has already made some major moves since his arrival: received approval of their Gen2 Line and made multiple investors presentations.
There's a new sherriff in town
You may also hear a lot about their chairman, legendary T.J. Rodgers who was CEO of Cypress Semiconductor for 34 years. He currently owns more that 20,000,000 shares of ENVX and regularly adds significant positions over time.
The Stock Enovix was established in 2007 and became public in 2021 through a SPAC (I know, I know). They currently have a market cap of about $1.6B. The stock has been trading between $6.50 and $39.48, the former being early in 2023 when the previous CEO held a pretty bleak investors’ presentation and the later at the peak of the market in late 2021. Let’s get back to the recent moves: in January, the previous CEO held an investor’s presentation where he pretty much laid all the potential risks on the table: challenges of scaling production, challenges in having reliable production, potential need for additional capital, delays in the Gen2 production line. Some might argue they kitchensinked it to be able to restart from a clean slate (with a new CEO). Then in February, ENVX reported earnings and the message delivered by the new management was a lot more positive: they have enough cash to cover operations for a bit and are working on partnerships to fund production, they would get approval for Gen2 Line by March 15th and provided production forecast of doubling production every quarter for the rest of the year. Before going any further, note that this stock is VERY volatile. Swings of 5%-10% are relatively common.

Big drop on that investors' presentation, followed by slow recovery
A DD is impossible without mentioning short interest: Short interest for ENVX is 18% and S3 Shirt Interest is 15%. It’s still somewhat elevated for this type of stock with about 3 days to cover on current volume. Not great, not terrible.

Not great, not terrible
Valuation No, this is NOT a value play. Market cap of $1.6B, revenue of $6M (you read that right), EBITDA negative at -120M and negative FCF at -82M. All that adds up to an EPS of $-0.91. Gah!! Good news is that they don’t have debt. So you can see that this is a very speculative play entirely based on their growth but even more on their ability to scale their production while maintaining output reliability. The other asset that they have as a high tech company is their patents. There are currently no competitors that have a similar combination of technologies allowing for high-density, fast changing and overheating/fire safety.
Potential Alright, this is where the juice is. I don’t know for you, but when I watch those Apple events about new iPhone, all I’m thinking is "I don’t need one more camera on my phone, I don’t care if it’s 1 micron thinner, I just want the battery to last a full day of usage without having to charge it". Whether you do long flights, spend the day in an hospital waiting room or whatever else. I’m a big Apple fan but I don’t have an Apple Watch because no way I’m taking off and charging my watch every day. And it’s also why I’m shopping a new ICE engine car instead of an electric one. Needless to say, if they are able to pull off production, we’re talking of about 30% more battery capacity AND much faster charging in a use case for phones. One place they also excel is in wearables: even smaller batteries, that does not get too hot. They also have a technology that allows for multiple form factors that could be used in applications like VR glasses or smartwatches. There is also the security component: while traditional lithium-ion batteries are subject to overheating and sometimes catching fire, you can literally drill through an Enovix battery while it’s being used with almost no noticeable impact. A side benefit of batteries not catching fire is that it would be possible for ENVX batteries to be shipped through cargo planes. The other aspect of Enovix potential is EV batteries. While they are not planning on any production before 2025-2026, they are working on the development and samples of EV batteries. Of course, Enovix as a car battery would represent a significant leap both in terms of capacity and security (remember those Teslas catching fire). Still, even if EVs have been on their roadmap even before they went public, Enovix is first and foremost a mobile battery play.

Drill baby, drill!
Clients So, who are the clients? Well, believe it or not, it a complicated question. We do know of some current clients: Garmin, Dell, Department of Defense,.. However, up until recently, ENVX were very flexible with prospective clients, signing NDAs even preventing of identifying the clients. All that investors would get is generic sector these prospects are in and a ballpark of their market cap. Names that were rumoured are Apple, Meta and Samsung among others. It is likely that Samsung is expecting samples from Gen1 Line to potentially submit firm orders from Gen2 Line.
Catalysts For the stock to really climb up, the catalyst that the market is waiting for is news/development about their new production line in Malaysia. Subsidies/tax breaks from the Malaysian government, partnership with a client for the first productions, news on timelines, inauguration, etc. After that, any client announcement would be a big deal but it’s impossible to predict the timing on this. For smaller catalysts, there are of course analysts price targets/ratings and insider purchase (their chairman of the board buys A LOT of shares). Earnings are absolutely not a catalyst unless they happen to announce new clients at that moment.
Risks / Bear case Since this is a very speculative and high risk play, you can of course expect a lot of bear cases. I think there are two main risks above all the smaller one inherent to non-profit generating companies. First, ENVX could run out of cash. In fact, if they decide to scale up using their current model, they WILL run out of cash and will need to raise capital. The new CEO however has been clear: he wants to develop partnerships with potential clients to help inject liquidity in the company and thus offer clients a product fully customized for their needs. But what if no potential client bites? Well, in that instance, the only way for Enovix to get out of the situation would be to raise capital, likely through a share offering. The second one is less likely but has much bigger impact: what if they go through all of this, set up their Gen2 line, get a partnership or two, start production and then realize that they can’t reach their scalability goals, either due to supply chain issue or just insufficient yield? If that happens, I think the stock is toast. There is also just one thing that hurt me a bit when the new CEO joined the company: the decision to manufacture in South East Asia (Malaysia) instead of in the US. This type of manufacturing is pretty sophisticated but if TSMC can manufacture in the US and get all the benefits of it, why not Enovix? I guess the rational answer is in the level of maturity of Enovix and that they will eventually get to a point where it will make sense to manufacture in the US. It’s hard to find other obvious bear cases. Maybe if a competitor comes up with a battery that also higher-density? It’s not impossible and would likely not come with all the benefits of ENVX technology but maybe no one would care and would just go with that "other" new technology. Finally, their previous CEO still has 1.3M shares and since the split with the company was maybe a bit tense, I can see him sell his position over time.
Price Target I personally don’t do price targets. I give very little value to analysts targets but in case you’re curious, PTs for ENVX vary between $19 and $100. All ratings are either "Buy" or "Overweight"
That's A LOT of Copium here...
Positions Shares, a small truck of it for now. Wouldn’t play options on it, but if I would have to, I would go with something like ATM leaps I guess. After a big run recently, I would expect a pullback in the $10-ish. And before you SirJack all-in. please, please read the Risk section of their latest 10-K, I'm sure it will change your mind!

2023.03.20 15:39 Wind-Face-Blink School speed limit

Coming from a different state, I noticed no one really obeys the school speed limit when the lights are flashing.
In PA, people obey that law religiously to the point where they even drive under the speed limit, and the school speed limit is even slower at 15mph (I've seen cars drive 8-10mph). But here in NOVA, I noticed cars continue to drive 45+ even when the school speed limit lights are flashing. In the past 6 months I've seen maybe 2‐3 cars slow down, and even when they did, it was only to about 30‐35, when the limit is 25.
I also hardly see any police cars to enforce this. Just something I noticed that was very strange to me.

I'm in canny valley right now so how is this build?

2023.03.20 15:37 CatnipNQueso Losing voice, not sure if worth visiting a clinic

Background: 25F, 5'6" 145lbs, USA (Washington State). History of anxiety and depression, high cholesterol (improving with weight loss).
Medications: Wegovy 2.4mg/mL
I found out last week that my partner betrayed me and I decided to terminate the relationship. In this time, I have noticed a severe lack of appetite as well as nausea and diarrhea (nausea and diarrhea worse at night/morning). Over this week, I've lost about 10lbs just because my appetite is so diminished. I even skipped my weekly dose of Wegovy to try and encourage an appetite.
3 days ago, I quickly started losing my voice and developed a scratchy throat and dry cough, with a sense of phlegm in the throat but inability to clear it. Yesterday, symptoms seemed slightly better but began to worsen slightly at night. This morning, my nausea has lessened, but my throat feels more sore and my voice sounds worse. I also found that when I lay on my side and cough, the coughing is wet (though no phlegm actually comes up). There is no fever, though I have been feeling more tired throughout these days.
It sounds like laryngitis on paper, but my fear is that I have covid or something. I took an at-home rapid test (nasal swab) for covid and it came back negative-- but I am also aware that these tests are less sensitive to some of the newer variants.
I am unsure if going to a walk-in clinic would be useful, or if I'm better off just staying at home and trying to treat this alone. I'm not really sure what medications would be most effective here.

2023.03.20 15:36 ilovefood755 Sick kid…to send or not to send

My daughter came into our room this morning at 4:15 saying she couldn’t sleep because she was coughing so much. She was coughing but no fever. Fast forward to 6:30 and she wasn’t coughing at all and was happy and playing and acting like her normal self.
A couple months ago she had a very similar illness with a cough that was only at night. I kept her home the first day and she seemed completely normal and a little stir crazy from being cooped up. It wasn’t until day 3-4 that she got a fever and became lethargic and wanted to rest. She ended up missing almost an entire week of school, and at that point I regretted not sending her on that first day.
I decided to send her to school today despite the night time coughing. I just don’t want to have a repeat of last time this happened , but I can’t help but feel a little guilty because she did not sleep well last night and I’m sure she will be tired at the end of the day.
I guess I’m just wondering what other people would do in my same situation. To send or not to send?

2023.03.20 15:36 TheMoneyCog (Guide) How to Retire Early in 6 Simple Steps

Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to retire early by creating a retirement budget, reducing spending, and investing prudently.
Read the Full Article on The Money Cog
A financial goal dreamed of by many individuals is to retire early. After all, who doesn’t love the idea of having as much free time as possible to pursue hobbies, holidays, passion projects, or entrepreneurial ideas?
The average retirement age in the United Kingdom is still 65. However, since the 2020 pandemic, many people are choosing to retire earlier. In fact, the Financial Independence/Retire Early (FIRE) movement has even enabled some individuals as young as 30 to retire from work through an aggressive savings rate.
However, stepping away from work isn’t a straightforward process. And it requires substantial financial planning to ensure savings don’t run out. This is especially true for those who wish to retire before the age of 60. Why? Because most private and state pension investment vehicles (such as a pension fund) don’t allow withdrawals before the state pension age.
With that in mind, here are six critical steps investors need to consider when aiming for early retirement.

1. Estimate living expenses

Throughout retirement, there will always be a combination of staple and discretionary spending. And it’s essential to plan for both. Individuals should try to estimate how much they’re likely to spend on a monthly or annual basis to maintain their desired lifestyle.
Some of the most common staple expenses include:
Some of the most common discretionary expenses include:
According to the British Department for Work & Pensions, the average annual retirement income in the United Kingdom is £18,772 — or £1,564 a month.

2. Calculate the required pension pot size

With an estimate of annual spending in place, individuals can now approximate the savings they’ll need. Most financial advisers recommend using the 4% rule. This principle is simple and states that a retiree should only withdraw a maximum of 4% of their pension portfolio per year to meet annual expenses.
Therefore, a retiree with £18,772 of annual expenses would need a pension pot of approximately £469,300. Needless to say, that’s not exactly pocket change. But through prudent pension saving and investing, reaching this milestone may not be as impossible as it seems.
For example, investing £500 each month into an S&P 500 index fund that has historically yielded a 10% annualised return would build a half-million portfolio within roughly 22 years. For a 23-year-old who just graduated from university, this could be sufficient to retire early at the age of 45. And by embracing the principles of FIRE, reaching this investment goal could be even faster.

3. Prioritise saving money

To fuel an early retirement investment portfolio, investors need capital. And the more that can be spared, the faster a pension pot can become established. The general rule of thumb for retirement planning is to set aside 10% to 15% of gross annual income for pension savings. However, if following the principles of FIRE, these proportions can vary anywhere up to 75%.
So how can individuals raise the necessary capital for their pension pot? There are generally three most effective methods.

4. Use a tax-efficient retirement account

A commonly forgotten expense that investors need to take into consideration is tax. Interest, capital gains, and dividends received from savings and investments are taxable. And this can have a profound impact on the amount of time required to reach desired retirement goals.
Fortunately, tax expenses can be mitigated using tax-efficient savings and investment vehicles. In the United Kingdom, investors have several options, each with advantages and disadvantages.

5. Prioritise growth investments

Younger investors seeking to retire early may find greater success by focusing on growthier investments such as stocks. While this approach comes with additional risk, it also opens the door to higher returns that can accelerate the compounding process. After all, early retirement means a short time horizon to establish a required pension pot.
Does this mean all investors should focus on aggressive growth? Of course not. Regardless of the investment objectives, investors must stay within their risk tolerance limits. But suppose it’s impossible to meet required retirement goals by doing this? In that case, investors need to either extend their time horizon by retiring later or find additional capital to fuel their retirement savings.

6. Speak to a financial adviser

Retirement planning can be a complicated process and is highly personalised. Speaking to a professional independent financial adviser can help quickly establish a plan and strategy that meets specified retirement goals while keeping risk in check.
They can also help with the initial preparations, spending calculations, monthly investment targets, and figuring out an appropriate retirement age. The relationship also doesn’t necessarily end once retirement is at hand. Financial advisers can also help to manage income streams, keep track of spending to ensure individuals don’t go beyond budget, and generally help ensure that retirement savings last.
While financial advisers can be expensive, the cost of not having one may be higher in the long run.

What is a good monthly retirement income?

As previously stated, a “good” retirement income ultimately depends on the individual and their desired retirement lifestyle. Factors such as outstanding debts, the number of dependent children, and the state of health can also have a significant impact.
A commonly used target is to generate sufficient income from a pension pot that covers 80% of pre-tax income while still employed. This proportion can be lower for investors embracing FIRE, provided they are willing to live more frugally during retirement.
For uncertain individuals who need help, reaching out to a financial planner or retirement adviser is likely a wise decision.

The bottom line

It’s not difficult to understand why many people want to retire early, ahead of the normal pension age. However, it’s far easier said than done. Individuals need to take a planned, disciplined approach and may need to be willing to make sacrifices for current and future lifestyles.

2023.03.20 15:36 BlackPearlFreya Ignatius Boulton event only 3 hours?

I'm new to Merge Mansion and unlocked the Ignatius Boulton event yesterday. Everything I've seen about it says that it's meant to last 72 hours. However, when I start the event it only gives me 3 hours on the timer. After the 3 hours are up, it deletes the board and I have to start another 3 hour session from scratch. Is this correct?
I'm finding it impossible to get any event exp in the 3 hours, even with clock boosts etc. The furthest I've got is the sign garden furniture.
Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong? Or if this is a bug? Thanks!
